DEVIN TOWNSEND – Reveals the Lightwork album release date & cover plus new UK dates for the rescheduled Lightwork Tour for2023

Devin Townsend and InsideOutMusic are very pleased to announce that the new studio album Lightwork, produced by Devin and Gggarth Richardson (Biffy Clyro, Rage Against The Machine), will be released on the 28 th  October 2022. The front cover artwork was designed by long-time friend and designer Travis Smith.

The album will be accompanied by a companion record called Nightwork, available as part of the limited edition versions of the release. More details on the formats will follow in the coming months, along with pre-order details.

Devin is also pleased to announce the addition of no less than seven UK shows as part of the rescheduled European Lightwork Tour 2023:

March 28th – Bexhill-on-Sea, De La Warr Pavilion 

March 29th – Bristol, Academy 

March 31st – Manchester, Academy 

April 1st – Nottingham, Rock City  

April 2nd – Newcastle, University 

April 4th – Wolves, KK’s Steel Mill 

April 5th – Norwich, UEA

The UK shows will go on sale Friday June 24 th , 10am local time.

After a few exceptionally long years full of personal change and near manic levels of creative activity, Canadian musician Devin Townsend releases his follow up to 2019’s well received ‘Empath’ in the form of his new release: ‘Lightwork’.

Assembled from a barrage of material written during the pandemic, ‘Lightwork’ (and its companion album of B-sides and demos; ’Nightwork’) represents Devin at this stage of his life, post pandemic, and his reflections on what he (and many of us) all gone through.

For Lightwork, Devin decided to see what would happen if he included a producer (an experiment he has been excited to attempt for some time) to help guide this selection of material. He chose long-time friend GGGarth (Richardson) to help bring this idea to fruition, and through a difficult (but wonderful) process, the next Devin album have been delivered.

The name ‘Lightwork’ represents the music, as well as the act of creating music, as a kind of ‘light in the dark’ while trying to navigate the seemingly endless challenges that life can often present. When things seem like there’s no way out’ or that a situation becomes seemingly insurmountable, the connection to music, family, and creativity became a light in the dark that ended up in this wonderful album.

Featuring artwork by frequent collaborator Travis Smith, ‘Lightwork’ arrives in several editions including a Limited Deluxe Orange 3LP+2CD+Blu-ray box-set that includes both ‘Lightwork’ & its companion album ‘Nightwork’ on both CD & Vinyl, as well as a Blu-ray including 5.1 surround sound, album commentary & visuals, art-cards & extensive perfect-bound booklet, all contained in a lift-off lid box. There will also be a Limited 2CD+Blu-ray Artbook, Limited 2CD Digipak, Gatefold 180g 2LP+CD, Standard CD Jewelcase and Digital Album.

Devin Townsend’s Lightwork European Tour – I’ll Be There, I Will Be There

I was in the middle of a North American Devin Townsend tour in mid-March 2020 when the earth shifted on its axis and every single touring band on the planet had to go home all of a sudden, with glazed eyes and masks on and, just, liberally covered with sanitizer and thinking “what the hell just happened?.” It’s been three years since that went down and I’ve felt a very specific sense of Townsendus Interruptus ever since, so its with immense gratitude and glee that I’m able to tell you:

I’ll be playing in Devin Townsend’s band on the upcoming Lightwork European Tour, which begins on Feb. 21 on Oslo, ends in Norwich on April 5, and goes just every which way in between.

This will be a tight little quartet consisting of Dev, me, Darby Todd on drums (who plays in Martin Barre’s band and has also played with The Darkness, Alan Price, Gary Moore, Robert Plant, Robben Ford – a truly versatile player) and James Leach on bass (a ferocious player, from the hugely influential band Sikth). I haven’t played with Darby and James yet but in a few days we start rehearsals, and I expect things to just explode . I mean this is going to be seriously great so if you can possibly come to one of these shows, you should fully do it, with all of your might.

Born from material that Devin Townsend wrote during the pandemic, Lightwork finds him in a reflective, optimistic mood. Unusually, the one-man prog powerhouse brought in a co-producer for the album in the form of GGGarth Richardson, whose credits include Rage Against The Machine , Melvins and Biffy Clyro . The result of their collaboration isn’t what might be expected given Richardson’s extensive background in heavy rock. Lightwork builds on the direction Townsend pointed towards on Empath , with less emphasis on mammoth guitar riffs and venturing into the territory of progressive pop. 

Sonically, Townsend maintains his trademark wall of sound, like a proggy version of Phil Spector minus the evil undercurrent. It’s a huge, deep mix, with instruments layered upon each other measured in fathoms, big, punchy drums, and vast swathes of strings and synthesisers. The opening Moonpeople establishes the vibe, with Townsend touching on falsetto with his vocals, a cheerfully catchy chorus hook, and lyrics that introduce the album’s themes about self-discovery and coming out of the darkness, metaphorically addressing all the uncertainties of the pandemic. 

Lightworker has hints of the musical theatre of Why? from Empath , with a monster chorus and production expertly designed to bowl the listener over. It feels guaranteed to be an absolute behemoth live. There are several moments when the album brings to mind the style of Tears For Fears and in tracks like Equinox and Call Of The Void , Townsend even sounds like Curt Smith, although some distorted singing serves to underline his metal roots. If not for the occasional screamed vocals, Equinox could fit on The Seeds Of Love , the songwriting is that strong and the production suitably lavish. Call Of The Void is reassuringly hopeful, Townsend, urging the listener not to freak out: ‘Because when you feel the world’s insane, relax!’ Vacation is a mellow slice of sunshine as Townsend opines about longing to get away from it all. 

Dimensions adds an industrial edge to the album with its NIN-style pulsing synths and machine-like drumbeat and the album closes with the expansive Children Of God , which brings back the prog pop aesthetic. Lightwork may be the closest that Townsend has come to a conventional set of songs, and it’s almost a shock to hear the mind behind Ziltoid The Omniscient offering the world a musical hug, but being unanticipated doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. The final sound on the album is a lighthouse’s lonesome foghorn, calling the listener home, guiding them out of the dark and into the light. Glorious.
