Newbury Park, California natives, The Neighbourhood, or shortened by their fans as The NBHD, are an indie rock band from the United States.

Formed in 2011 by friends Jesse Rutherford, Jeremy Freedman, Zach Abels, Mikey Margott and Bryan Sammis, the band released two EPs, “I’m Sorry…” which contained the explosive “Sweater Weather” in 2012. Later that same year, the band released a second EP entitled “Thank You.”

By early 2013 the band released their first full-length album “I Love You” and the announcement of their performance at the Coachella music festival that year. Because of the success of their EPs, “I Love You” debuted 39th on the Billboard200 albums chart, with “Sweater Weather” reaching number one on the Billboard alternative chart by June 2013. The release of the album meant a tour; a tour that they called “The Love Collection Tour” alongside bands JMSN, Lovelife and The 1975.

Riding the success of all their successful tours and festivals, the band premiered a new song “Silver” on BBC 1 radio in December 2013, and in January released “Honest” for the Spiderman 2 soundtrack. Around the same time, they also announced the “#000000 & #FFFFFF” project (aka Black & White) to be released sometime during 2014. Despite the loss of drummer Bryan Sammis (and the consequent gain of Brandon Fried) they again set out on a world tour, “Le Tour Noir” in 2014.

The band is adamant about maintaining a certain image, having turned down television appearances that wouldn’t film in black and white. The artistic style has maintained a great importance to The Neighbourhood, and when asked about it, frontman Jesse Rutherford responds, “It’s important to stick to something. The black and white image was one defining thing for us where we were like ‘we’re gonna do that, we’re gonna keep it.”

Live reviews

Everything from my shoulders on down to my hips was squished between the different bodies that were packed around me while we waited for The Neighbourhood to take the stage on Tuesday night at the Masquerade Music Park.

The heat from everyone around me was unbearable and made it somewhat difficult to breathe. I was glad that the concert was held outside. I don’t think anyone would have been able to stand for two hours inside the Masquerade nightclub without the occasionally cool summer’s breeze wafting through the wall of bodies, cooling us down as we waited. People lucky enough to be closer to the stage were sprayed with water by the stagehands. Unfortunately, I was just outside of the water’s reach. Not only was the heat an issue, but the overcast sky threatened to rain just like the last time the Neighbourhood played Atlanta. Fortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. For some fans, the anticipation led them to start singing “Sweater Weather,” one of the band's top hits, to pass the time. Although, the singers were cut short when the lights flashed on stage and the haunting intro of “Female Robbery” blasted through the speakers. Jesse Rutherford, the band’s lead vocalist, dressed in all black and a leather jacket, despite the muggy heat, took center stage with plumes of smoke surrounding him and the band, and three LED screens on stage with black and white graphics to accompany the music. From the very beginning, Rutherford was a bouncing ball of energy. He paced the stage, waved at fans, and pined for the crowds’ reaction, which he easily got. I guess he knew that after all the waiting the fans did, he had better up the energy of the tired, hot, and sweaty crowd. Rutherford’s voice sounded deeper with a little rasp to it, giving the songs a sexier sound, except when the group performed “Lurk” and Rutherford’s voice sounded almost exactly like Justin Bieber’s. Then the band took on a more somber tone, staying with the “West Coast vibes” as Rutherford said. They performed the ironically named “West Coast,” “WDYWFM,” and “Wires” to set the mood before moving back to the high energy that the group had in the beginning of the show. Of course when “Sweater Weather” started, the crowd went wild, but the screams and excitement increased ten-fold when the twangy guitar cue for “Afraid” — which was also the last song — ripped through the crowd. Middle fingers flew up in the air as Rutherford got to the chorus and his fans chanted along with him. Later, on the drive home, my mom said that she could hear everyone singing the last song from where she was parked down the street. As the last notes echoed and the band left the stage, the crowd chanted for an encore, but were only lucky enough to get the band’s half finished water bottles and balled up set lists which were tossed out into the audience.

The Neighbourhood are a group of 5 guys from LA who have a black and white styled vision for themselves and even the fans participate in that as well. The band as well as all the fans who know of their black and white theme will dress in those colors for the show. Even the visuals during the show are black and white, they do not use colored lights, and have screens that show black and white video during their songs. Their music for those who don't know could be described as dark pop, alternative, and hip hop based. They have a tendency to have more of a hip hop styled beat with alternative guitar styles as well as a poppy melody that could be sang more in a pop way or fast like hip hop. Its an interesting style combination that works very well and is different than what you hear everyday.

The frontman Jesse Rutherford knows how to work the crowd. He moves to different parts of the stage going to the edge to be close to fans, to dancing when the mood feels right, to getting crowd interaction having everyone chant or move their hands in the air like him. The band plays a mixture of songs from their debut album, their EPs, and mixtapes, so there is a variety to for them to choose from. It's always great to hear old material, current material, and new material all in one night. The shows are high energy even though their songs while listening on CD are usually more relaxed and sort of melancholic, during live shows the fans will sing the lyrics out all together and dance and sway making it so energized and fun. Of course by the show being so great must mean the band does a great job, which is true the music is always on point and the singing is very much like what you'd hear on a recording. These men know how to put on a good show and the more the crowd is into it the more they are too. It was a blast having everyone dance and sing along the whole show, as well as it being the final stop of the US tour for their album it made it special to see them for the last time until they have new music. They are a great band made up of creative, funny, sweet guys who make their fans very happy. This was my fourth time seeing them this year and I will definitely be seeing them again. Black and white will never die.

We’d been looking forward to seeing The Neighbourhood in concert being as they’ve been our favorite band for about 7 years, but last night was hands down the worst concert experience we’ve ever had. The a couple members of staff at the Van Buren made it even more miserable. I fully intend on calling the Van Buren to complain. The fans were so disgustingly rude and selfish with absolutely no regard for decency. We’ve never experienced anything like it and we go to more concert last than anyone else we know personally. We always buy 4 tickets and buy lots of merch. We’re very supportive fans. We were uncomfortably crammed by some truly awful, rude, insensitive people. We have our usual complaints about the Van Buren, when it comes to lighting, sound and design, but our feeling is that the best thing about this venue is that its size has brought in some bands that might not have come to Phoenix otherwise. I hope when The Neighbourhood returns to Phoenix they play Comerica. As far as the band, who we absolutely adore, they were incredible and Jesse Rutherford is even more beautiful in person. That being said, we were disappointed in many of their choices for the set list. We did not enjoy either of the two opening bands either. All in all it was a pretty terrible night and it’ll take us a while to get over our disappointment. We went home and cried...The fans were that bad...Like really, really bad.

How do I even begin to describe The Neighbourhood concert? For starters, The Neighbourhood is by far the best band I've seen live and this was the second time I saw them. Jesse carries so much energy with him while performing on stage. The only thing I wasn't too happy about was the turn out of the crowd. As they said they did book a "hilariou$ly over$ized" venue but come on,who in their right mind wouldn't want to see such a talented and energetic band? I think they're very underrated and they deserve a lot more attention than they receive. Regardless of the turnout, The Neighbourhood made it their best efforts to wow the crowd that they had in front of them and I assure you that's exactly what they did. The crowd, while it was a small one, was so engaged in the concert and clearly no one was dissappointed. The setlist that they put together couldn't have been anymore perfect and it was exciting to hear new songs that haven't been previously released yet. Although the first Neighbourhood concert I attended I was able to meet Jesse and Zach, I liked this one a lot better because I was so much closer and could feel the energy and enjoy the concert more. Their music is so unique that it's hard not to instantly fall in love with them.To anyone who hasn't seen or even heard of The Neighbourhood I highly recommend you check them out. You won't be dissappointed.

The Neighbourhood was the first band I saw perform at Lollapalooza last year. It was super hot, and the crowd was excited with anticipation for the festival to kick off. So I was quite surprised when the band came out in all black. The lead singer had on a black hoodie sporting the band's logo (which he eventually took off). They started off really well, getting the crowd moving to the beat. Looking around, I noticed that there were a lot of younger people who came to watch The Neighbourhood. They sounded really good live, and they looked at ease up on the stage. The vibe of the concert was pretty relaxed and chilled. As the concert continued, more people started joining the crowd. What I like about The Neighbourhood is their eery sound that grabs the listener's attention. They really brought out that sound, and the band sounded just like the audio recordings. One unfortunate thing that could have been planned better is the order of songs on the set list. They played their most famous song, "Sweater Weather" in the middle of the concert. So, thinking that the concert was over after the single, several people left to go to another show. Despite that hiccup, The Neighbourhood really showed us what a talented, young band they are, and I'm glad I got to see them.

My name is Sabrina and you will definitely be hearing from me a lot in the next few months to years (trying to make that sound a lot less stalker-y as it does). I've been listening to your music since 2012 and I instantly felt a connection. The way you write and sing about real feelings that a lot of current "hit" artists sugar coat speaks volumes to me, and a lot of your fans, something I'm sure you already know.

I've never been to a concert before and the fact that the first was on #THEFLOOD2015 tour, I will definitely be cherishing forever. I saw you guys in Pittsburgh and sang along to virtually every song. I will be completely honest and say that I was a little skeptical of how the live performance would be and how it would vary in comparison to the record, but I was incredibly pleased. I was definitely shaken to the core by how the live music made me feel, a feeling that I can definitely say that I'm addicted to. I just want to thank you for that experience as well as telling you that I appreciate every single word you write and that I often find myself analyzing your lyrics during the hardest times. You guys definitely have my support 100% of the way.

The Neighbourhood was absolutely outstanding. Despite being in section C, Jesse made me feel like I was in the first row. Not once were people sitting down throughout the entire setlist. With the neighborhood having a darker image than most indie artists out there, you would expect the band to be a bit more secluded and reserved onstage. However, this ended up being the exact opposite. Jesse can work a crowd extremely well and is very charismatic. He interacted with the crowd throughout the concert. He has such a nice sense of humor. The lighting and graphics were really cool too and really made the entire show. They were more important to the concert than one would think. The overall quality of the show was an A+. The neighborhood was amazing live. In fact, they were much better live than in the studio. I showed up to the concert expecting to have a good time and ended up getting so much more than that. There's a sense of unity one feels after spending hours listening to live music you love with people who have the same taste in music as you. Without a doubt I would see them live again.

There is honestly no better place to see The Neighbourhood than in Los Angeles. The California natives' El tour blanco was one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen in my life. Their energy never dies on stage, not even for the second they were told they had to cut the show a song short due to noise permits. They came back out and finished with the perfect attitude and performance. The music is impeccable if not better than the recordings of each of their songs and the graphics on the screen behind them match the vibe of the whole show as well. They can own an entire Victoria's Secret store with the amount of bras being thrown at them from the insane pit and their laid back attitude was shown when Jesse grabbed someone's phone from the pit and took some selfies making the entire crowd feel comfortable to be in their presence and ambitious to hear the music. Definitely a concert I didn't want to end.

I saw Imagine Dragons last autumn on their Night Visions Tour with NEIGHBOURHOOD and The Envy Corps. Before the concert, I listened to their album, I Love You. and I loved all of the songs. They were meaningful and were unlike any that I had heard previously. I was so intrigued by Jesse Rutherford's voice and I didn't know what to expect when seeing them live. I was not disappointed. They were AMAZING! Sweater Weather had just been debuted on the radio, so it was already a fan favorite. The song was performed better than expected and the performance itself was lively and full of energy. There was never a dull moment or any slip-ups during the entire set. This is one show that you would definitely want to see, especially if you are a fan of The NEIGHBOURHOOD or just an Indie/Alternative music fan. The NEIGHBOURHOOD is one of my favorite bands of all time, and soon may be yours too.

I put the following review on the “Bands in Town” app as well....

I’ve been to multiple concerts covering various genres over the years. So I’m not saying what I’m about to say without past experience. I am a concert junkie. I consider The Neighbourhood to be my favorite band so it hurts me more than I can express to only rate them two stars. Now I understand this was a music festival, not a solo The Neighbourhood concert, but their performance was incredibly underwhelming. Not only did they only perform about 7 songs, Jesse was-he wasn’t present with us! Me and other crowd members started to question if he was on something or just high. And...even if not, his overall performance was very dull. He sang off from the music on more than one occasion and only addressed the crowd once. Just very disappointed...I’m sorry nbhd, I still love you guys.

What do Americans think of their neighborhoods?

Three in four Americans are generally satisfied with their neighborhoods.

Published Tue, August 27, 2024 by the USAFacts Team

Three out of four Americans like where they live.

According to survey data from the Federal Reserve, 76% of American adults were somewhat or very satisfied with their neighborhood in 2023.

What do Americans like and dislike about their neighborhoods?

When asked about specific characteristics of their neighborhoods, Americans were less consistently satisfied. For example, 66% of parents were satisfied with their local schools.

For others, safety was a concern: 65% of respondents were satisfied with the level of risk of natural disaster and severe weather in their area, and 61% were satisfied with the level of crime risk.

It was the cost of housing, though, that was least satisfactory, with 37% of adults reporting being satisfied with the cost of housing in their neighborhoods.

Are homeowners more satisfied than renters?

Homeowners were more satisfied with each surveyed aspect of their neighborhoods than renters.

Homeowners were more likely to be satisfied with their area by nearly 20 percentage points: 83% to 64%. Housing costs were the least satisfying quality for both groups, with 42% of homeowners and 29% of renters feeling satisfied.

New York 5 Neighborhood Tour: a Must in NY

What better way to explore New York City than by looking inside its neighborhoods?

The New York Contrasts tour is a must-tour for your trip. It doesn’t matter how many days you travel to the Big Apple. This tour has to be among your priorities.

Keep reading; I’ll tell you why. Shall we?

  • Check out our guide to visiting New York in 5 days to get an idea of everything you can see in this fascinating city.

Tour the Neighborhoods of New York With a Good Guide

New York Contrasts Tour

The New York contrasts tour is a very nice excursion where you visit the “other” neighborhoods of the city, neighborhoods that you may not visit if you don’t go with a guide.

Also, this tour allows you to visit them on the same day. And with the guide, you learn a lot of exciting things. Also, if your guide is nice like ours, you have a free photographer for a day. ????

neighborhood tour usa

The Neighborhood Tour is the most complete and famous excursion in New York. On this tour, you will visit essential places in the city.

The tour starts early in the morning, and you’re going to visit the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Harlem. This way, you’ll get to know life in the different parts of New York.

For more than 4 hours, you’re going to tour the world’s most culturally diverse areas, which are rarely visitable without taking a guided tour.

Contrasts Tour Prices and Different Options You Have

New York Contrasts Tour

To do the Contrasts Tours, you have different options. First, do it as a group with the tour.

Hire the VIP tour to do so with the people who travel with you and the guide just for you (this was the option we chose), and you also have Contrasts Tours + Harlem Gospel Service, the gospel Mass.

Visit the Neighbors of New York

The contrasts tour is NY’s most famous tour. You’re going to tour the city’s neighborhoods with a guide in a group.

The guide will tell you all that you see; there are different stops. It’s done by bus.

It lasts between four and a half and five hours. There are four starting points in the city. This tour does not include pick-up at your hotel.

  • Group contrasts tour – book online
  • VIP Contrasts Tour (includes pick up from your hotel)

Contrasts Tours New York Private Tour

The Private Tour makes a similar itinerary as the group tour, but this one includes pick-up at your hotel, which is appreciated.

We hired this tour on our second trip to New York, and the truth is that it was awesome. We had a great guide who took us on a super cool minivan, and he knew all the details and anything we asked him.

Besides, he loved to take pictures and made a lot of them.

It must be said; that we were 4 people to share the expense.

New York Contrasts Tour

Tour Contrasts + Gospel Mass

You have to do this visit on a Sunday.

The Gospel Mass Plus Contrasts Tour includes two tours in one. First, the Tour of Harlem and the Gospel Mass, and then the Contrasts tour itinerary.

It can be done in a group or in private, as you like.

Contrasts Tour Itinerary: what are you going to visit?

I’ll leave you the itinerary we made with Civitatis (all enterprises do the same or similar itinerary). This company has some professional guides who will make you enjoy all their guided tours.

They pick you up at the hotel (depending on the tour you hire, I will tell you about our experience), and we go west of Manhattan to reach the West Side Highway, where you visit outside the Trump Building Complex.

You’ll enjoy views of the Hudson River, which separates the states of New York and New Jersey, and you’ll see the Intrepid, the famous museum of the sea, the air, and space, located above an aircraft carrier at Pier 86.

The visit continues north of Manhattan across Harlem, the cradle of jazz and African-American culture.

You’ll see some of the neighborhood’s most famous landmarks, like the Cotton Club and the Apollo Theater. Of course, you will be able to go down and take pictures as well.

New York Contrasts Tour

Then you go to the Bronx, the Salsa District, Jennifer Lopez’s birthplace, and the place where the highest-paid players on the Yankees team live.

In the Bronx, you will stop at Yankee Stadium, Fort Apache (the precinct where the film of Paul Newman was), the famous Grand Concord Avenue, and the South Bronx, where graffiti and memorials of deceased gang members abound due to street fights (the rapper’s graffiti is especially famous Puerto Rican Big Pun).

New York Contrasts tour

Then you’re going to visit Queens, New York’s largest and most multicultural district. Then, crossing the Whitestone Bridge, you will enter the residential area of Malba, famous for its impressive mansions.

The next stop will be Flushing Meadows Corona Park, where films were shot like “Men in Black” and “Come to America.”

In the park, there is also the Mets Stadium (Citi Field), the National Tennis Stadium (home of the U.S. Open), and the Queens Museum, where “The Panorama of the City of New York” is located, an incredible 900-model square meter.

Visit the 5 neighborhoods of New York

You’ll have time to enter to see it (Wednesday to Sunday) or take a short walk through the Park.

It may interest you: Photo Journey : €10 discount with the code TOURISTEAR. Take the best photos of NYC with a professional photographer (tour in English).

Leaving behind Queens, you will arrive in Brooklyn , where you will tour the Jewish quarter of Williamsburg, considered the world’s second-largest Orthodox Jewish community.

There, it will be easy to appreciate the change in culture, language, religion, customs, and lifestyle.

New York Contrasts tour

From Brooklyn, you will enjoy the best views of New York and the famous New York Brooklyn Bridge, the oldest in town and where hundreds of movies and video clips, including one from the Rolling Stones, were filmed.

Crossing one of the world’s most famous bridges (the Manhattan Bridge) will lead you toward China Town, the area where the visit will end, an ideal place to eat and continue the day.

Here, my recommendation is to ask to be left on the Brooklyn side bridge, so you can have a hot chocolate if you go in the winter or have a beer at River Café or walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

For me, the excursion of contrasts is a must. So take a look at the prices and choose the one that interests you the most.

Another recommendation is to book the tour in advance and plan what you want to visit in New York, especially if you buy the New York Pass !

Enjoy your trip to New York, and tell me how you’ve been doing!

Transgender golfer hailey davidson takes one step closer to lpga card as tour continues gender policy review, share this article.

neighborhood tour usa

A total of 100 players advanced out of the LPGA’s Pre-Qualifying Stage (formerly Stage I) and among them was transgender golfer Hailey Davidson.

“Third time’s a charm!” Davidson wrote on Instagram .

Three years ago, Davidson became the second transgender player to compete in LPGA Q-School, where she did not advance past the first stage. She tried again in 2022, missing the 54-hole cut by a single stroke.

This time around, Davidson tied for 42nd at Mission Hills Country Club with rounds of 72-72-69-71 to finish at 4 under. She now advances to the Qualifying Stage (formerly Stage II) October 15-18 in Venice, Florida. Those who complete the 72-hole event (play all four rounds) at Plantation Golf and Country Club will earn Epson Tour status based on their finish. Those who make the cut will advance to Final Qualifying, which will take place in December.

Amateur Ashley Menne won the Pre-Qualifying Stage with a 16-under total.

Days before the Pre-Qualifying event started, LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan sent out a memo to LPGA and Epson Tour players regarding the tour’s Gender Policy. Golfweek confirmed that in the memo, Marcoux Samaan stated that the tour planned to conclude a lengthy review of its current policy by year’s end and would implement any updates to the policy before the 2025 season.

The commissioner stated that the tour’s top priority must be to have a policy that provides for fair competition and considers “first and foremost” competitive advantage.

In 2010, the LPGA voted to eliminate its requirement that players be “female at birth” not long after a transgender woman filed a lawsuit against the tour.

Earlier this year, Davidson came within one spot of qualifying for the 79th U.S. Women’s Open, the biggest championship in women’s golf.

Davidson had primarily competed on NXXT Golf until the Florida-based mini tour announced in March – on International Women’s Day – that competitors must be a biological female at birth to participate.

A three-time winner on the tour, Davidson ranked second on the mini tour’s season standings at the time of the ban. She had played nine times this season on the NXXT.

Midge ure on his latest u.s. tour and joining ultravox 45 years ago: ‘i found my musical home’.

By 1979, the Scottish musician James “Midge” Ure had played in the bands Slik, Rich Kids, Visage and Thin Lizzy. During his time in Visage – a collective that included Rich Kids drummer Rusty Egan and Ultravox multi-instrumentalist Billy Curie – Ure experienced an opportunity that would change his and Ultravox’s career forever. At that time, Ultravox's previous lead singer, John Foxx, had left the group and Island Records dropped the group from its roster after a U.S. tour.

“It was Rusty who said to Billy, ‘[Midge is] the guy that should be in your band,’” recalls Ure decades later. “‘He's what you need.’ And I jumped at the chance of joining this band who were broken but had all these skills, all this knowledge about electronics. They'd been dealing with this stuff a long time. It just felt like coming home. I found my musical home.”

Midge Ure joined Ultravox – which included Currie, bassist Chris Cross and drummer Warren Cann – as their new singer and guitarist in 1979. After that crucial addition, Ultravox revived their fortunes with a string of U.K. hit singles (among them “Vienna,” “Dancing With Tears in My Eyes” and “Reap the Wild Wind”) and albums during the 1980s. Outside of Ultravox, Ure found success as a solo artist (”If I Was,” “Dear God”) and the co-writer with Bob Geldof of the Band Aid charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”

Forty-five years later after hooking up with Ultravox, Ure continues his former group’s legacy with his current North American tour titled Band in a Box . Accompanied by keyboardist Charlie Round-Turner, Ure will be performing Ultravox and solo material via synths and guitar augmented by loops, samples and programmed drums, per an earlier news release announcement.

Ransomware Gang Targets Google Chrome Users In Surprise New Threat Twist

Today’s nyt mini crossword clues and answers for tuesday, august 27th, new details emerge about why ‘the acolyte’ was cancelled.

“The idea of it really went against the grain, especially when you think of Ultravox back in the day,” says Ure of the current tour. “We ended up touring with 25-26 keyboards on stage. [But it was] still only four of us because we refused to use tracks or prerecorded tapes or prerecorded sequencers.

“Of course, that's a whole different ball game now,” he continues. “People see that in a different light. So I did this two years ago when I joined the Howard Jones tour and he wanted to do a kind of electronic package. I ended up doing this band-in-the-box thing there in order to justify coming out to America to do it. And people loved it.”

Of performing in the U.S., a territory that Ultravox never conquered during their existence as opposed to their huge popularity in the U.K., Ure says: “I think American audiences in general tend to be more exuberant. They tend to wear their hearts on the sleeves – not saying that the Brits don't. There'll be some audience members who've followed me all the way through: Rich Kids, Ultravox and solo stuff. You can see the sparkle in their eyes when you start something that they've never heard live. That's a different sensation for me.”

Ure can easily claim a stake as one of the key players in the British synthpop movement that grew out of the New Romantic period in the late 1970s as punk rock was winding down. It goes back to Ure's days in Rich Kids with Egan. “I bought a synthesizer in 1979, brought it into Rich Kids, which killed the band, split the band in two, right down the middle,” he says. “Half the band hated it, half the band loved it. So Rusty and I formed Visage purely to play in the small club that he used to DJ in.”

That club was Billy's in London, which later would set the stage for Blitz, the nightclub Egan and the late Steve Strange co-founded and became the epicenter of the New Romantic movement. “We decided that we wanted to make music that we could play in his club,” Ure recalls of Billy’s. “Nothing bigger than that, but we wanted to do it with our favorite musicians. Some of our favorite musicians were from the Manchester band Magazine, and another favorite musician was Billy Currie from Ultravox.”

Visage, the synthpop collective that consisted of Ure, Egan, Currie, Strange and Magazine's John McGeoch and Barry Adamson, scored a hit with the 1980 song “Fade to Grey.” But by then, Ure became the new guy in Ultravox, which released that same year the highly successful Vienna album and its unforgettable anthemic title song.

““Vienna” went against the grain of what radio would have played at the time,” Ure says. “We weren't interested in commercial success. If we attained enough success to stay alive and make interesting music, that was fine. As I said before, that was my musical home. I came in there and the constraints of writing three-minute pop records were gone. All of a sudden, I could experiment with these guys.

“It was by default, I suppose, that the band was elevated beyond the status when “Vienna” got played on the radio,” Ure continues. “Once people heard “Vienna,” it became the huge commercial success that it did. It changed everything. But we kept on experimenting. We kept on pushing the boundaries and trying different things, which was amazing. So it wasn't about trying to achieve commercial success. It was trying to achieve musical success and musical satisfaction.”

More hit albums and singles followed for Ultravox in the next couple of years—including 1984's Lament , which marked the first time the band members produced an album themselves after previously collaborating with Conny Plank and George Martin; its biggest hit was “Dancing With Tears in My Eyes.” Ure says that the band was ready to take over the production reins.

“When we signed to Chrysalis Records, they kept asking us to do demo tapes, and we said ‘no.’ Not because we were being pedantic about it, but because you do a demo tape and you're relaxed because it's not a proper recording. Sometimes you can capture something in a demo tape that you can't recreate. It's gone. And Chrysalis finally said, ‘Look, here's two days in the studio. Do something. We need to hear something before we can sign you.’ So we recorded “Sleepwalk” [which later appeared on the Vienna album]. We produced that on our own and then gave them one song. And they signed us on the strength of that one song.

“By the time we did the Lament album [after having our records produced by Plank and Martin], circumstances had changed. I had my own studio. It was easier to record in my back garden, a very relaxed scenario in writing and recording all at the same time. And we came up with the Lament album. So it worked at the time. The time was right for doing it.”

Earlier this year, Ure's former Ultravox bandmate Chris Cross died at the age of 71 , nixing any possibility of an Ultravox reunion after the group's 2012 album Brilliant . “Instantly, we hit it off,” Ure remembers of meeting Cross for the first time. “Chris and I had the same sense of humor. We liked the same things. We were interested in photography and graphics. We were just very compatible. We were like the big buddies in the band, designing the stage sets. We directed the videos together. So it was a massive shock when [his death] happened because it came completely out of the blue. It was a real crushing blow. It certainly put an end to any thoughts of that four-man Ultravox [classic lineup] ever reforming.”

After the resumption of his solo career, Ure has been busy touring and releasing music such as 2014's Fragile and 2017's Orchestrated , the latter a collection of Ultravox and Ure’s solo songs re-recorded with an orchestra. Last year, he re-released his 1985 solo debut album The Gift as a deluxe edition. As far as a new record goes, Ure says: “I'm constantly writing. There is no pressure to release anything. You don't have a record label banging on your door saying, "We need this next month or next year or whatever." So you just take your time. I'm kind of 75% there with a new album. And I'll complete it when I finally stop touring. ( chuckles ) It's ready when it's ready.”

Following the Band in a Box tour, Ure will be back performing in the U.K. under the Catalogue: The Hits banner in the U.K. later this year and Germany in 2025. In contrast to Band in a Box , the Catalogue tour will feature Ure with a full band. “I did the Royal Albert Hall last October for my 70th birthday,” he says. “And that was quite something. When we did that, I realized that people still wanted to hear those songs. They still want to relive those moments. They still want to hear that sonic landscape that we can make. So the Catalogue tour was born out of that.”

And given the “catalogue” name for his next tour, Ure says that he may delve into the music from the early part of his career in addition to his solo, Ultravox and Visage material. “I think I might do a Rich Kids tune in there. And I might even throw a Thin Lizzy song in as well because even though I didn't write it, it's part of that journey. So it kind of kind of widens the spectrum that I can actually delve into. That should be a bit of fun.”
