History [ ]

Origins [ ].

Amanda was born on Earth around the turn of the 23rd century . ( TOS : " This Side of Paradise "; TAS : " Yesteryear ") Captain Spock once implied that she was a descendant of Human author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle . ( Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country ) Her family had a genetic predisposition to dyslexia . ( DIS : " Light and Shadows ")

When Amanda was young, her mother was known to say to her daughter , " Isik for your thoughts. " She never explained to her daughter what an isik was. ( DIS : " Will You Take My Hand? ")

Amanda met Sarek , the Vulcan Ambassador to Earth. The two later married , and she returned to Vulcan with Sarek. ( TOS : " Amok Time ") The two were in the city of ShiKahr where Amanda gave birth to her only son, Spock , in 2230 . ( TOS : " Journey to Babel "; TAS : " Yesteryear ")

In the 2240s , Spock got into a fight with another Vulcan child at the Vulcan Learning Center when he referred to Spock's mother as a "Human whore."

Around 2249 , when Spock was considering completing the kolinahr discipline, which would have purged the last vestiges of his emotions, he expressed his wish that Amanda not consider his choice to live a life free from emotion as a reflection upon her. Amanda assured her son that no matter what he chose, she would always be proud of him. Spock ultimately decided to enroll in Starfleet Academy rather than the Vulcan Science Academy after the head minister of the Vulcan Council referred to Spock's mother as a "disadvantage".

In 2258 , Vulcan was attacked by the Romulan mining vessel Narada . Attempting to preserve the knowledge of the Vulcan culture, Sarek, Amanda, and the Vulcan Council went into the katric ark , making evacuation by transporter impossible. Spock beamed down to the surface and evacuated them from the ark so that they could be beamed aboard the USS Enterprise . As the transporter was initiated, the ledge beneath Amanda collapsed, preventing a viable transporter lock, and Amanda was lost.

James T. Kirk later used Amanda's death to encourage an emotional reaction from Spock by questioning whether he ever loved her (as an eyewitness to Spock's reaction to her death, he knew this was his best chance to successfully do so), thus forcing Spock to recognize that he had been emotionally compromised by her death and was thus unsuited to command the current mission against Nero . Spock and Sarek later spoke about Spock's inability to control his anger at Nero for causing Amanda's death, prompting Sarek, knowing that suppressing such strong emotion would've been the last thing she would want Spock to do, to admit to his son that he had genuinely loved his wife, helping Spock achieve a greater control of himself. ( Star Trek )

Following Amanda's death, Spock gifted a Vulcan amulet she had owned, which was made of vokaya , to Nyota Uhura . After Spock ended their relationship in 2263 , Uhura tried to return the amulet but Spock refused. Spock was later able to use the amulet to track Uhura and the captured Enterprise crewmembers on Altamid . ( Star Trek Beyond )

Sarek and Amanda, 2230

Amanda, Sarek and their newborn son (deleted scene)

Amanda Grayson was portrayed by Winona Ryder .

Additional scenes featuring Amanda were shot for the film Star Trek , but cut before the final release. One such scene features Amanda and Sarek (predating Nero's incursion, Ryder and Ben Cross were actually playing Jane Wyatt and Mark Lenard 's "prime" characters), together with the newborn Spock. Another involves Amanda arguing with Sarek about the boyhood Spock and how he should react to bullying, after he has been involved in a fight with another Vulcan boy. Though Amanda at one point admits she wants Spock to embrace being Vulcan, she is of the opinion he should, every now and then, do the "Human" thing by occasionally walking away from conflict. Frustrated with Sarek, she goes on to do precisely that.

The writers expected that, because Spock was to lose his mother later in the film, writing Amanda into a lot of the early scenes of the movie would increase the impact of that loss. According to Producer Damon Lindelof , however, the writing team actually found the opposite turned out to be true. ("Amanda and Sarek Argue After Spock Fights" audio commentary , Star Trek  (Special Edition) DVD / Star Trek  (Three disc Blu-ray) / Star Trek: The Compendium Blu-ray special features)

One reason why the writers decided to have Amanda die in the film Star Trek was that their depiction of the friendship between Kirk and Spock was inspired by that between Paul McCartney and John Lennon , both of whom suffered through the death of a parent in childhood (Kirk loses his father, George Kirk , in the film). [2] In the film's script but not the final version of the movie, Amanda's final words were to tell Spock, "" It's okay. To be scared. " Spock's memory of her, immediately after her death, was referred to in the script as "the ghostly image of her – beautiful, holding, frozen in space – an image he'll be haunted by forever – as it fades away, evanescing like mist." [3]

Concerning Ryder's performance as Amanda Grayson, Spock actor Zachary Quinto once stated, " Winona brought a real tenderness to the role and she really highlights the juxtaposition between her heartfelt way of being and Sarek's logic. " [4] (X)

Apocrypha [ ]

In the first issue of the IDW comic mini-series Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness , Spock would have a recurring nightmare where during the destruction of Vulcan, he was able to successfully transport Amanda safely to the Enterprise , only for a hull breach to occur in the transporter room. Amanda's last words to Spock were that she blames him for dooming everyone as Spock is sucked out into space while the ship soon explodes and kills everyone, including Amanda.

Amanda Grayson Resurrected

Amanda resurrected by Nekron

In the comic crossover mini-series Star Trek - Green Lantern: The Spectrum War , an ancient cosmic being named Nekron , who had crossed over from another universe arrives where Vulcan used to be in 2262 and used his power to resurrect the planet and its inhabitants, including Amanda so that he could begin a new conquest of death in the universe. The Enterprise arrives with several Lanterns from the same universe as Nekron and battle him and his undead army. Though Spock says that his mother is dead, the reanimated Amanda points out that he is hesitant to fire his phaser at her. He is then saved by Green Lantern John Stewart who blasts her with his Power Ring . Stewart offers his condolences to Spock as he knows what it feels like to see people he love be twisted like that, to which Spock offered his gratitude while explaining that the decision was as logical as it was necessary. After that, Kirk has Spock wear all seven Lantern Power Rings, correctly guessing that Spock had the sufficient strength needed to channel the entirety of the Emotional Spectrum and summon the Life Entity to defeat Nekron. It then uses its power to cleanse every trace of Nekron's power, which results in the destruction of Vulcan and its inhabitants once again.

Star Trek

  • The brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father's legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful Romulan from the future creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time.
  • On the day of James T. Kirk's birth, his father dies on his damaged starship in a last stand against a Romulan mining vessel looking for Ambassador Spock, who in this time, has grown on Vulcan disdained by his neighbors for his half-human heritage. 25 years later, James T. Kirk has grown into a young rebellious troublemaker. Challenged by Captain Christopher Pike to realize his potential in Starfleet, he comes to annoy academy instructors like Commander Spock. Suddenly, there is an emergency on Vulcan and the newly-commissioned USS Enterprise is crewed with promising cadets like Nyota Uhura, Hikaru Sulu, Pavel Chekov and even Kirk himself, thanks to Leonard McCoy's medical trickery. Together, this crew will have an adventure in the final frontier where the old legend is altered forever as a new version of the legend begins. — Paramount Pictures
  • When a Romulan mining vessel attacks the USS Kelvin, Lt. George Kirk substitutes his captain, who goes to meet the Romulan captain on his vessel to negotiate a ceasefire. He orders the evacuation of the damaged starship, including his wife who goes into labor giving birth to their son James Kirk, and crashes the Kelvin against the vessel. Aboard the USS Enterprise, the most sophisticated starship ever constructed, a novice crew embarks on its maiden voyage. Their path takes them on a collision course with Nero, the Romulan captain from the future whose mission of vengeance threatens the Federation. Once humanity would survive, rebellious young officer James T. Kirk and coolly logical Vulcan officer Spock must move beyond their rivalry and find a way to stop Nero before he destroys Earth. — Blazer346
  • In 2233, the Federation star ship USS Kelvin is investigating a "lightning storm" in space. A Romulan ship, Narada, emerges from the storm and attacks the Kelvin leaving it defenseless. Narada's first officer, Ayel (Clifton Collins, Jr.), demands that Kelvin's Captain Robau (Faran Tahir) come aboard to negotiate a truce. Robau is questioned about the current star date and an "Ambassador Spock", whom he does not recognize. Narada's commander, Nero (Eric Bana), kills him, and resumes attacking the Kelvin. George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth), Kelvin's first officer, orders the ship's personnel, including his pregnant wife Winona (Jennifer Morrison), to abandon ship while he pilots the Kelvin on a collision course with Narada. Kirk sacrifices his life to ensure Winona's survival as she gives birth to James Tiberius Kirk (Chris Pine). Seventeen years later on the planet Vulcan, a young Spock (Zachary Quinto) is accepted to join the Vulcan Science Academy. He has always been taunted as a half human, half Vulcan by his peers and dislikes references to his human mother in anyway. Realizing that the Academy views his human mother, Amanda (Winona Ryder), as a "disadvantage", he joins Starfleet instead. On Earth, Kirk becomes a reckless but intelligent young adult. Following a bar fight with Starfleet cadets accompanying Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Kirk meets Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), who encourages him to enlist in Starfleet Academy ("Your dad was the captain of a star ship for 12 mins and saved 800 lives. I dare you to do better"), where Kirk meets and befriends Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Karl Urban) (He lost everything in the divorce, except the bones in his body) Three years later, Commander Spock accuses Kirk of cheating during the Kobayashi Maru simulation. The simulation required cadet captains to face death and protect the crew in a no win scenario, but Kirk cheats and inserts a sub routine to change the scenario and beat it. Kirk argues that cheating was acceptable because the simulation was designed to be unbeatable. Spock argues that Kirk not only cheated but failed to get the most important learning of the simulation that a captain cannot cheat death. The disciplinary hearing is interrupted by a distress signal from Vulcan. With the primary fleet out of range, the cadets are mobilized, with McCoy and Kirk boarding Pike's ship (Kirk is grounded on account of his academic suspension, but McCoy argues that Kirk is his patient and he wont leave for the mission unless he is allowed to bring Kirk along), the Enterprise. Spock considers Uhura as his favorite student and assigns her to the Enterprise. The enterprise is a few minutes late in departing as the new helmsman Pavel Chekov (Anton Yelchin) & Hikaru Sulu had not released the external inertial dampener and hence the warp drive did not engage. Realizing that the "lightning storm" observed near Vulcan (shortly after which Vulcan was attacked by a Romulan ship and sent a distress signal to Earth) is similar to the one that occurred when he was born, Kirk breaks protocol to convince Pike that the distress signal is a trap. When the Enterprise arrives, they find the fleet destroyed and Narada drilling into Vulcan's core. Narada attacks Enterprise and Pike surrenders, delegating command of the ship to Spock and promoting Kirk to first officer. Kirk, Hikaru Sulu (John Cho), and Chief Engineer Olson (Greg Ellis) perform a space jump onto the drilling platform. While Olson is killed mid-jump, Kirk and Sulu successfully reach and disable the drill, but are unable to stop Nero launching "red matter" into Vulcan's core, forming an artificial black hole that destroys Vulcan. The Enterprise manages to rescue Spock's father, Sarek (Ben Cross), and the high council before the planet's destruction, but not his mother Amanda, who falls to her death before the transporter can properly lock onto her. Out of 6 Bn Vulcans only 10,000 are saved. As Narada moves toward Earth, Nero tortures Pike to gain access to Earth's defense codes. Nero declares his intention to destroy all federation planets, starting from Earth. Uhura is shown to have romantic feelings towards Spock. Spock deduces that the Narada is from the future and has used the black hole technology to create a passage through space time. Nero's presence, beginning with the attack on USS Kelvin has altered the flow of history and created an alternate reality. While in pursuit, Spock maroons Kirk on Delta Vega after he attempts mutiny (Kirk wanted to go after Nero and the Narada, while Spock wants to hook up with the rest of Starfleet in the Laurentian system, as per orders from Captain Pike). On the planet, Kirk encounters an older Spock (from the original time line) (Leonard Nimoy), who explains that he and Nero are from 2387. In the future, Romulus was threatened by a supernova, which Spock attempted to stop with an artificial black hole made of "red matter". However, his plan failed, resulting in Nero's family perishing along with Romulus, while both the Narada and Spock's vessel were caught in the black hole and sent back in time. Spock quickly found they were sent back 25 years apart, during which time Nero attacked the Kelvin, thus changing history and creating a parallel universe. After Spock's arrival, Nero stranded him on Delta Vega to watch Vulcan's destruction as revenge. Reaching a Starfleet outpost on Delta Vega, Kirk and the elder Spock meet Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (Simon Pegg), who helps them by devising a trans-warp beam system, allowing both him and Kirk to beam onto Enterprise while it is travelling at warp speed. Following the elder Spock's advice, Kirk provokes younger Spock into attacking him, forcing Spock to recognize himself as emotionally compromised and relinquish command to Kirk. After talking with Sarek, Spock decides to help Kirk. While Enterprise hides itself within the gas clouds of Titan, Kirk and Spock beam aboard Narada (Uhura reveals her first name is Nyota to Spock). Kirk fights with Nero and Ayel, killing the latter and rescuing Pike, while Spock uses the elder Spock's ship to destroy the drill. Spock leads Narada away from Earth and sets his ship to collide with Nero's ship. Enterprise beams Kirk, Pike, and Spock aboard. The older Spock's ship and Narada collide, igniting the "red matter". Kirk offers Nero help to escape, but Nero refuses, prompting Kirk to give the order to fire, dooming Narada to be consumed in a black hole that Enterprise is only barely able to escape. Kirk is promoted to captain and given command of Enterprise, while Pike is promoted to rear admiral. Spock encounters his older self, who persuades his younger self to continue serving in Starfleet, encouraging him to do, for once, what feels right instead of what is logical. Spock remains in Starfleet, becoming first officer under Kirk's command. Enterprise goes to warp as the elder Spock speaks the "where no one has gone before" monologue.

Star Trek: 5 Actors Who Almost Played Spock Instead Of Leonard Nimoy

Spock standing with shadow figure

Even to the uninitiated, Leonard Nimoy's Spock has long served as the face of the "Star Trek" franchise. Reflecting on the iconic character while speaking with  Variety  about  "Strange New Worlds," the most recent Spock actor, Ethan Peck , recalled his own experience flashing the Vulcan's signature hand sign on his grade school playground as a kid. "When I thought of 'Star Trek,' I thought of Spock. And now I'm him," the actor mused. "It's crazy."

Like Zachary Quinto before him, Peck landed the gig in part because of his passable resemblance to Nimoy's O.G. Vulcan. Despite creator Gene Roddenberry's conviction that the actor would be perfect for the role, he was one of a handful of aspiring Vulcans in the running. According to William Shatner's account in the memoir "Star Trek Memories,"  NBC required Roddenberry to consider a handful of other actors for the role before landing on Nimoy. And judging by the lineup, Captain Kirk's favorite bromance could have looked a lot different.

Actors who were seriously considered for — or even offered — the role include character actor Rex Holman ("Escape to Witch Mountain"), Victor Lundin (Gene from "The Theory of Everything"), Michael Dunn ("The Wild, Wild West" TV series),  Martin Landau, whose many well-known roles include Bela Lugosi in "Ed Wood,"  and even DeForest Kelley, who ended up playing the ship's doctor, Leonard "Bones" McCoy.

Roddenberry wanted Nimoy, but NBC wanted someone else

As recounted in  Marc Cushman's book, "These Are the Voyages: TOS, Season One," Spock had been on Gene Roddenberry's mind early in the "Star Trek" pilot creation process. For suggestions on casting the ship's first officer, he had turned to Gary Lockwood, who played the lead in Roddenberry's 1963 TV military drama series "The Lieutenant." When the actor recommended Roddenberry cast someone "who was really good, but ... had kind of a strange face," Majel Barrett — Roddenberry's wife and then-future Trek legend — immediately reminded him of Nimoy.

But NBC had their own guy in mind to play the Vulcan — namely, Martin Landau. By the time he was offered the role of Spock, Landau had racked up a number of TV and film roles, including appearances on "The Twilight Zone," "Wagon Train," "Gunsmoke," and "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour." Around the same time the actor was offered the role of Spock, he had been up for a role in the spy series "Mission Impossible" as master of disguise Rollin Hand.

For Landau, turning down the space series was a no-brainer. In 1986, the actor told  Starlog,  "I can't play wooden. It's the antithesis of why I became an actor," adding that "newscasters are more emotional than Spock." Instead, he went for the spy gig — a role that earned him a Golden Globe in 1968.

DeForest Kelley turned down the role

Dishing in Allan Asherman's  "The Star Trek Interview Book,"  Roddenberry said Michael Dunn, a 3' 10" actor whose best-known role was as Dr. Miguelito Loveless on "The Wild, Wild West," was also considered for the part. "I wanted Spock to look different and be different, and yes, to make a statement about being an outsider looking in," Roddenberry explained. Ultimately, the franchise creator felt the role needed someone more conventionally attractive to a weekly TV audience, concluding, "It was the right choice for the time." Dunn did, however, end up making an appearance on "Star Trek" in one of the series' most notorious episodes, "Plato's Stepchildren."

Victor Lundin, who played one of the first Klingons in "Star Trek" in "Errand of Mercy," also auditioned for Spock. In 2001, he told the  Chicago Reader,  "If you look at my ears you can see why. I would've saved them millions in makeup." According to Lundin, he was just too much of a beefcake to play the Vulcan at the time, noting, "I was very buff in those days." Also considered for the role was Rex Holman, who would finally get his turn with the franchise in "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier."

But for many Trekkies, the most surprising Spock revelation is that DeForest Kelley read for the role as the Enterprise's Vulcan science officer. Kelley detailed his near-Spock experience in  "From Sawdust to Stardust: The Biography of DeForest Kelley, Star Trek's Dr. McCoy."  Recalling a lunch meeting with Roddenberry, Kelley recounted, "He described this character, this alien with the ears, and he asked me how I felt about playing it." However , the idea of playing a Vulcan didn't sit well with him. "No, Gene, really, I don't want to do it," he recalled, answering in a tone similar to that of his  sarcastic Enterprise doctor, Bones .

Babysitting isn’t for the faint of heart - literally! The ‘90s are making a comeback with the 2024 reboot of Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead . Staying true to the original film's roots , the modern remake follows a 17-year-old Tanya ( Simone Joy Jones ) whose summer vacay plans are put to a halt when her working mom ( Patricia "Ms. Pat" Williams ) has a nervous breakdown during a meeting. Tanya’s mom decides it’s about time she goes on a vacation, specifically a two-month wellness retreat all the way in Thailand. Although this sounds like heaven for her mom, all of this feels like a nightmare for Tanya. With their mom out of the house, Tanya has no choice but to cancel her Europe trip plans and stay home, all while caring for her younger siblings. If that isn’t annoying enough, the kids are stuck with an elderly babysitter ( June Squibb ).

If it isn’t obvious enough from the title, their babysitter unexpectedly passes away. With no proper adult to supervise the kids and tend to their everyday basic needs (like food), Tanya is forced to find a job, ultimately working in corporate for a woman named Rose ( Nicole Ritchie ). With everything from work, family, and even an emerging romance on her plate, Tanya wonders if she’ll ever get to spend her last summer at all as a teenager before heading to college. I guess this is growing up.

Make sure mom has no idea what you’re doing! Without further delay, here’s everything we know so far about the 2024 remake of Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead .

Tanya Crandell (Jones) has dreams of a perfect summer. However, those dreams take an unexpected turn when her mother (Ms. Pat) has a nervous breakdown during a meeting at work. In desperate need of rest and relaxation, Tanya’s mom decides to book a flight to Thailand for an intensive two-month meditation retreat. Unfortunately for Tanya, that means she has to sacrifice her own plans of spending the last few months before college on a trip to Spain. With her mum being out of the country, Tanya finds herself stuck at home, unreluctantly taking care of her younger siblings.

If you thought Tanya’s summer couldn’t get any worse, just wait until you hear about their babysitter: the elderly, super strict, and let’s just say “problematic” Mrs. Sturak (Squibb). At this point, any hope of a decent summer vanishes. Mrs. Sturak lays down the law, banning everything from video games to even just going outside. But Tanya’s not one to let a summer go to waste. She secretly invites her friends over for a raging party, under the guise of a Bible study group.

But just when things were looking up, reality came crashing down. The morning after their epic bash, tragedy strikes as their babysitter unexpectedly passes away . Suddenly, there’s no responsible adult in sight to handle the basics, like keeping the house clean or stocking up on groceries. With independence thrust upon her, Tanya finds herself shouldering a mountain of responsibilities, including the daunting task of finding a job. And as if that wasn’t enough to handle, she’s also navigating the tricky waters of a budding romance with her crush. It’s a plot straight out of a classic summer flick. It’s Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead but with a modern twist.

Grab your popcorn and sodas! Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead officially premieres in theaters in the United States on April 12, 2024.

Moviegoers can also expect a lineup of exciting theatrical releases this month. Other films set to premiere include the bloodthirsty vampire flick , following a group of killers who kidnap the ballerina daughter of an underworld figure, unbeknownst to the fact that their victim comes from a sinister background. The Guy Ritchie spy action film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare graces the screens with a stacked ensemble , featuring big names like Henry Cavill , Alan Ritchson , and Alex Pettyfer . Topping it all off is the tennis drama Challengers , starring love triangle Zendaya , Josh O'Connor , and Mike Faist . Looks like April’s a pretty busy month for the cinemas.

The modern reboot of Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead stars Jones as Tanya Crandell. The up-and-coming actress made her mark in the 2022 TV series Bel-Air , a reimagined version of the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air . Jones starred as Lisa Wilkes, Will’s potential love interest and Carlton’s ex.

Playing as the iconic babysitter Mrs. Sturak is June Squibb , whose portfolio includes films such as Thelma , Palm Springs , and The Humans . The seasoned actress was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2013 for her work in Nebraska . Other famous faces include Nicole Richie as Rose Lindsey, Tanya’s boss. The American TV personality and fashion designer made a name for herself in the 2000s thanks to the hit pop culture phenomenon The Simple Life , starring alongside fellow socialite Paris Hilton . Another familiar face to look out for is former Olympic freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy , whose role has yet to be disclosed. Stand-up comedian Ms. Pat plays Tanya’s overworked mom.

Other cast members in the ensemble include Donielle Hansley Jr. , Ayaamii Sledge , Carter Young , Miles Fowler , and Tyriq Withers .

Check out the official synopsis for Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead :

“Seventeen-year-old Tanya Crandell (Simone Joy Jones) can’t wait to spend the summer living it up with her friends in Spain before heading to Howard University in the fall. But when her mom (Ms. Pat) decides to head to a much-needed wellness retreat in Thailand, Tanya is forced to stay home with her three siblings instead. Following the unexpected death of their elderly babysitter (June Squibb), Tanya gets a job working for the confident and ambitious Rose (Nicole Richie). Juggling work, family, and a complicated romance, Tanya faces the responsibility of adulthood at the cost of her summer of freedom.”

In the 2024 reboot, Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead takes on a fresh twist. While the core plot remains faithful to its beloved predecessor from three decades ago, this modern adaptation brings diversity to the story . This time, the family centers around a Black family with a hardworking mother at the helm.

Just to jog your memories, the 1991 version of Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead follows five siblings as they find themselves alone for the summer when their mother heads to Australia, leaving them in the clutches of a cruel babysitter (who also passes away). The kids realize their mother’s vacation money is missing, buried with the deceased sitter. Desperate to make ends meet, 17-year-old Sue Ellen "Swell" Crandell ( Christina Applegate ) concocts a bold scheme: she fakes her way into a corporate job, becoming the family’s sole breadwinner. As Swell juggles office politics and teenage hijinks, she must also save the struggling company and unite her squabbling siblings.

While the original Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead may not hold the same cultural weight as other ‘90s kid classics like Home Alone or The Parent Trap , its legacy endures differently . Despite a lukewarm reception upon its release and a humor that some may find too mature for a PG-13 audience , the film found a second life in home entertainment and rentals, thriving in an era before streaming services dominated. For those who appreciate the film’s nostalgic charm and its family hijinks, Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead remains a beloved gem and a testament to simpler times.

The 2024 reboot of Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead is directed by Wade Allain-Marcus , whose previous directing projects include French Dirty and Grown-ish . The film features a script by Chuck Hayward , who previously learned his writing abilities from the Dear White People TV series , WandaVision , and Emmy award-winning Ted Lasso .

The executive producers are Ryan Huffman and the host of America’s Next Top Model herself, Tyra Banks . Banks produced the movie through her company SMIZE Productions, accompanied by senior executive producers Michael Phillips and Tova Laiter. Joining the lineup of producers are Juliet Berman, Oren Segal, Justin Nappi, and Juliana Maio, with Eric Tosstorff and Kim Coleman co-producing.

Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead is brought to audiences by BET Studios, known for their knack for reviving classic tropes with a modern twist. With hits like The Black Hamptons , After Happily Ever After , and Klutch Academy in the repertoire, BET Studios is no stranger to breathing new life into familiar storylines that resonate with today’s audiences.

Star trek: discovery casts mia kirshner as spock’s mother.

Star Trek: Discovery casts Mia Kirshner as Amanda Grayson, mother of Spock and adoptive mother of Sonequa Martin-Green's Michael Burnham.

Star Trek: Discovery is taking things back to Lt. Michael Burnham's past, casting Mia Kirshner as Amanda Grayson, Burnham's adoptive and Spock's biological mother. The series has already shown Michael's Vulcan upbringing in flashbacks and introduced Sarek, played by James Frain. Now it seems that more of her family, as well as major players in the Vulcan corner of the  Star Trek   universe, will be making an appearance.

Amanda Grayson first made her television debut in  Star Trek: The Original Series.  Played by Jane Wyatt, she appeared in the episode 'Journey to Babel' and again in  Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.  Originally a school teacher, she met Sarek, the Vulcan ambassador to Earth and the two married .  She was portrayed by Winona Ryder in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek .

Originally reported by TrekMovie.com , Kirshner will be playing Amanda in Star Trek: Discovery . It's unknown when Kirshner will make her debut and in what context.

Kirshner joins a cast that includes Sonequa Martin-Green as Lt. Michael Burnham, Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou, Jason Isaacs as Captain Gabriel Lorca, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets, and Doug Jones as Lt. Saru. The series is already off to a strong start, with its premiere episodes garnering nearly 10 million viewers  and proving a strong critcial success with fans and newcomers alike.

At its heart, that's why adding Amanda and tying Michael Burnham closer into the  Star Trek  mythology is important. Kirshner's presence on the show will add more backstory to the protagonist; a new addition to Trek continuity, there's never been a story like Burnham's told before, so drawing her further into Sarek's family will be a welcome move. Of course, actually introducing Spock prior to the events of  The Original Series is risky and the writers should be careful that even establishing his parents doesn't distract from making a character strong and powerful enough to stand on her own.

Jean-Luc Picard drinks Earl Grey tea! Coffee is for barbarians!

I dunno, Spock doesn’t strike me as a “flavored coffee” type of person.

I think of him as a tea man, myself.

“I think of [Spock] as a tea man, myself.”

He does have T-negative blood.

A new Star Trek coffee line! Where is “Janeway Juice”?

Captain Janeway should have been called “Captain Coffee”, always holding a mug! Even Hologram Janeway drinks coffee. Kathryn will not be happy, being the number one coffee drinker in Starfleet, if she doesn’t get her own elixir of life!

Yes. Janeway Coffee has to be item #1.

Yes! I just said the same thing haha. I think everyone is thinking it.

BTW I haven’t seen Prodigy yet but does she still drinks coffee on that show?

Actually she drinks more tea now when she was on the Dauntless. I think her doctor advised it. But hologram Janeway did. 🙂

Oh I see thank you dear! I’m actually more of a tea drinker as well but that’s due to my upbringing.

I’m very excited to see Janeway again! 😊

Brings back memories of House of Kharn Dark Roast, and Andorian Ice blend

May I suggest Bones Romulan Ale Birthday Blend

Talk about unforced errors. Janeway should’ve been in the first coffee batch. And yes, Vulcans do not drink flavored coffee. And Rhaktajino (sp?) seems like another no-brainer to me.

That said, I wish them well, and hope they exist long enough to do the other proposed blends.

Only Colombian Coffee. Ortegas Colombian Blend. Will buy it if available! :D

Would not call myself “still a fan of DVDs,” but since that’s the best physical format available for DS9 and VOY I do own those sets. Thanks for reopening that old wound! lol

Wake me up when they get to the breakfast cereal with a big ol box of Cheeri-Ol-mox!

Oo-Mox dang IPhone killed my joke!

It’s OK, we got it!

Does anyone else remember the trek coffees and hot chocolates sold in the late 90s by starbase-1.com?? They were awesome, I’m hoping these will be as good.

I want to try Raktajino. I’ve always wondered what it tastes like.

Oh yes same!!!

Oh wow that coffee sounds fantastic. I would buy them all but it seems like a crime against the Federation not to have a Janeway brew.

Does Worf even drink those? It should be Jadzia or Sisko on that bag.

I drink coffee with my Janeway cup all the time, so this would be a nice addition. 😎👍

Once in awhile I’ll see the Carlo Giannini cups used on TNG-Enterprise (but mostly Voyager). They’re tempting.

Saenger Pottery still sells the wild creations that Picard would serve tea out in later seasons.

A Brief History of the Progenitors in Star Trek

They designed life itself!

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains story details and plot points for Star Trek: Discovery 's "Red Directive ."

Filtered and stylized of a Progenitor from 'The Chase'

StarTrek.com

Captain Burnham's top-secret mission in the final season of Star Trek: Discovery has finally been revealed. But this time, the Discovery crew isn’t stopping a future-destroying A.I., or a lethal, extra-galactic force. Instead, they’re investigating the basic mysteries of why most species in the Star Trek universe look vaguely human.

As revealed in " Red Directive ," the search for technology used by ancient "Progenitors" sets-up a massive treasure hunt for the season. But, who are the Progenitors? What did Jean-Luc Picard know about the secrets of inter-species alien DNA? And how does all of this fit in with Gene Roddenberry’s earliest ideas for Star Trek ?

Here’s a brief history of the Progenitors, from the early 1960s, to the 24th Century, all the way to 2024, and the 31st Century.

The Real World-Origins of the Progenitors

Pike points his phaser towards at the Talosian magistrate while yeoman J.M. Colt, Vina, and Number One stand by his side on Talos IV's surface in 'The Cage'

"The Cage"

When the U.S.S. Enterprise first set out to seek out "new life and new civilizations," a huge swath of those alien lifeforms turned out to look a lot like human beings. And the primary reason for that, at least behind-the-scenes, was two-fold.

First, human actors are more affordable, and second, Gene Roddenberry wanted the classic Star Trek to avoid the sci-fi trope of "Bug-Eyed Monsters." And so, in one of the original 1964 pitch documents for Star Trek , Roddenberry floated the idea of "The Parallel Worlds" concept . The idea was that the format of Star Trek — from a writing and production standpoint — would generally deal with "...plant and animal life, plus people, quite similar to Earth. Social evolution will also have interesting points of similarity with ours."

Unlike a huge swath of science fiction on TV at the time, the promise of strange, new worlds, that were, in fact, populated by people , is something that set Star Trek apart, and was the cornerstone of what gave the series its humanist angle. But, the side effect of course, was an in-universe question — why were so many aliens humanoid?

The Old Ones, Sargon, and The Preservers

Spock and McCoy investigate Preserver technology on the surface of Amerind in 'The Paradise Syndrome"

"The Paradise Syndrome"

The first two seasons of The Original Series are sprinkled with hints that, in the distant past, the galaxy was visited by super-powered aliens with technology far more advanced than anything in the Federation.

In " What Are Little Girls Made Of? ," we meet Ruk, an android built by "The Old Ones," an alien race capable of creating humanoid androids that were basically immortal. In " Return to Tomorrow ," the disembodied soul of Sargon, refers to humanity as "my children." While Dr. Muhuall says this idea flies in the face of evolutionary theory, Spock mentions the idea that aliens seeded life would "explain certain elements of Vulcan pre-history."

Then in Season 3, in " The Paradise Syndrome ," Bones and Spock tackle the question head-on. When they realize an ancient race of "Preservers" helped various humanoid species throughout the galaxy, the idea of an ancient alien race guiding and "seeding" a ton of humanoid species became less of a myth and more of a working theory. "I’ve always wondered why there were so many humanoids scattered through the galaxy," Bones says. To which Spock replies, "So have I. Apparently, the Preservers account for a number of them."

And then, the questions about an ancient humanoid species went answered. At least, until The Next Generation .

On the surface of Vilmor II, a Progenitor disrupts an argument between the Enterprise away team, the Cardassians, Klingon, and Romulans in 'The Chase'

"The Chase"

Directed by Jonathan Frakes and written by Ronald D. Moore and Joe Menosky, " The Chase " was a sixth-season episode of The Next Generation , which, according to The Next Generation Companion , was considered in the writers' room the most "Roddenberryesque" episode of TNG at that time. The story itself took cues from Carl Sagan's novel Contact , and posited that yes, ancient aliens not only seeded most of the humanoid species, but also hid a message in the DNA of all those species.

Captain Picard's interest in archeology comes in handy during the quest to locate all the DNA strands and reveal the message, which was also represented metaphorically by the ancient artifact known as the Kurlan naiskos .

Captain Jean-Luc Picard moved by the gift of an intact Kurlan naiskos artifact by his former mentor in 'The Chase'

At the end of the episode, representatives from the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Empire, the Cardassian Union, and the Federation, all witness the truth — an ancient Progenitor (played by Salome Jens) makes it clear that all the humanoid species in the galaxy don’t exist out of pure hubris, but instead, out of a kind of desire for legacy. "You are a monument, not to our greatness, but to our existence…. Remember us."

Ronald D. Moore pointed out that there's no reason to believe that the Progenitors from "The Chase" and the Preservers from TOS aren't one in the same. Though not explicitly stated in the script, he said, "But this could be them, and be internally consistent."

Discovery Brings It All Home

'Red Directive'

"Red Directive"

While The Next Generation established a canonical fact that TOS only danced around, that only answered the question of why . With Discovery Season 5, a stranger, and more complex question is getting broached — how ?

"The Chase" told us why there are so many humanoid species in the galaxy, but we had no idea how the Progenitors specifically pushed life to evolve on various planets toward the exact form of life we’re all so familiar with. As the crew of Discovery — and other forces — are in pursuit of this ancient tech, Star Trek is boldly speculating on one of the biggest questions of all time.

If there was a supreme intelligence behind the creation of life, what was their method? While these kinds of questions are somewhat mind-boggling in real life, what Discovery is doing now is what Star Trek has done all along: Ask provocative questions that are beyond what we know now, so that maybe, in the future, we’ll be better prepared.

We don’t know that the Progenitors exist in real science, but the "panspermia hypothesis," is a very real scientific concept. A friendly alien may not have consciously sparked life on Earth eons ago, but, in reality, it is possible that some building blocks for life itself may have come from the stars.
