How to complete the Ember of the East Opportunity in Red Dead Online

Image of Otto Kratky

The biggest addition to Red Dead Online with its Dead Money update was the introduction of “Opportunity missions,” which we’ll just call heists since that’s pretty much what they are. These missions, which cost a minimum of 15 Capitale to start, task players with stealing precious jewels. The latest heist, the Ember of the East, has players steal a flawless ruby from the town of Annesburg. Like other Blood Money missions, this one can be started at any Blood Money NPC.

When you first ride into Annesburg, you’ll find that the town is heavily guarded. It’s best to sneak around as much as you can, so use a bow and thrown weapons. There are three locations where the chest could be; the first two are close by while the last is on the other side of town.

red dead online visit each sheriff

The first place you’ll want to check is the foreman’s office. To get there, skirt along the town’s coast, then head up into the large red building. Up there, you’ll find the foreman, who you can kill for keys to his office. If the chest containing the ruby isn’t in his office, you can still loot it for a valuable trinket to sell to a fence. Past the office, you can find an envelope on a table that should clarify where the ruby is being kept.

Next, you’ll want to check the Sheriff’s office. If you’ve managed to be sneaky up to this point, don’t bother anymore, things are going to get loud. To get into the office you’ll either have to kill an officer, who you can find sauntering along the town’s main street, or you can break in. Either way, shots will likely be fired. Like the foreman’s office, if the chest isn’t in here you can still find a small bit of loot.

The final location where the ruby might be is in the Annesburg mines. If your horse is nearby, be sure to get your shotgun out for this part. Head over to the part of the mines pictured below and you’ll find the chest containing the ember of the East.

red dead online visit each sheriff

Once you have the ruby, all that’s left is to deliver it to Martelli. Of course, the law isn’t going to let you go that easily. Along the way, you’ll find a couple of solid groups of enemies. Take them out before going on so you don’t end up with too many enemies on your tail. Deliver the ruby and enjoy your payday.

Red Dead Online Story Missions Walkthrough Guide

Our Red Dead Online Story Missions Walkthrough Guide will help you learn all about completing all the Main Missions in Red Dead Redemption 2 Online.

Red Dead Online Story Missions Walkthrough Guide

Throughout your game time in Red Dead Online, you might have to help a few sheriffs a few times. Our Red Dead Online Story Missions Walkthrough Guide will take you through all of these missions in a step-by-step manner.

Red Dead Online Story Missions Walkthrough

Let us start with all of the missions that you can do when playing Red Dead Online. We will explain all of the important objectives that you need to achieve when going through the missions of the game. We will start with If the Hat Fits.

If the Hat Fits

At the start, you need to go to a camp found in Pike’s Basin. Get to the camp to the southwest and pick off the enemies one by one. After that, take care of the gang that is protecting the outlaw who is your main objective.

Try to fight them from the upper side of the basin and then make your way down.

Once you have the outlaw, tie him up and take him to the Police Chief. There will be many enemies coming from above whom you need to kill and then use your horse to go into the basin.

Keep on shooting the enemies around you. They will come from both sides. When you get to the campsite, you can either help him and get some cash on your way to the Police Chief or do not help him and be honorable.

Love and Honor

Speak with Horley in Blackwater and you can find this mission in the middle of Tumbleweed. Go to the Sheriff’s Office to get this mission. After that, head on over to the Twin Rocks. Then, clear out the gank over there and find Mrs. O’Dowd.

Your objective can be found inside the building and you will be given the choice of either helping the couple (honorable) or taking down Cliff (dishonorable).

If you help them, you will protect them as they make their way to the hideout. Ride in the wagon or follow them and take out enemies as they come about.

If you decide to not help them, the main part is the same and you will need to escort Mrs. O’Dowd to her husband. Simply tie her up and take her to Tumbleweed to complete the mission.

The Right Side of the Tracks

Talk to Horley in Blackwater and choose the mission to the southwest of Caliban’s Seat. After that, you need to go to Bob Crawfish in his hideout.

It is quite close to the beginning of the mission. Take cover because enemies will greet you.

Once you have killed the guards, you will have to chase Crawfish and catch up to them. Eventually, you can hogtie them.

Remember that the enemies will split up and your party will need to chase them individually to get them all. In the end, you need to get the thief to the tracks at Fort Riggs so that they can meet Arnsdale.

Simply follow the quest marker and deliver them to Arnsdale to complete the mission. You can either help or kill the thieves in the end.

Honor Among Horse Thieves

This mission is automatically available to you when you complete the tutorial of the game. You will have to visit Clay Davies on your map to start the mission.

Then, you need to steal horses for Clay by going to the location mentioned on your map. Get outside the Woolen Mill and take out the enemies in there. Kill all the players in there and get the horse from the stable to the east side.

Once you have calmed the horse, steal it, and take the horse to the stable marked on your map. The stable is in Saint Denis and you will have to face many enemies along the way. Once you are there, you will have completed the mission.

Where Your Morals Lead You

You can start this mission by heading to Horley after you have completed the 3 Sheriff Missions. Then, head on over with Marshal Davies to the campsite north of Manzanita.

He will introduce you to a tracker and will take you to find Alfredo Montez. Simply follow Lee and defeat all of the enemies on the way.

That you will be taking part in 5 interactions. After that, you will find Alfredo Montez. Here, kill his gang as well as Montez. You will have to face off enemies depending on how many you killed previously.

Eventually, you will have his head and you need to get to Manzanita post. There are many enemies on the way who you need to kill. Get to the post to complete the mission.

Highly Illegal and Highly Moral

This mission tells you that you killed the wrong guy in the last mission. At the start, you need to go to either Van Horn or the Camp. Go to one of them and look for the Lieutenant.

At Van Horn, you need to take out Montez’s Lieutenant. Simply be stealthy, follow him, and eventually take him out.

After that, you need to clear the camp and return to Marshal. Then, you will ride out to Montez and his convoy and you need to catch him to bring him back to the drop-off area and complete the mission.

Will we make it to our lofty target? Only time will tell.

How to accept a specialist role.

There are currently three Specialist Roles in Red Dead Online - Bounty Hunter , Collector, and Trader. Accepting one of these roles allows players to complete unique tasks and earn a variety of rewards which are exclusive to that role.

Roles.jpg

While accepting a role isn't hard, each one is a little bit different. Players can accept one role or multiple, it's up to you. Below is everything that you need to know about accepting a Specialist Role in Red Dead Online .

How to Accept the Bounty Hunter Role

If you've always dreamed of chasing down the worst people that the wild west has to offer, the new Bounty Hunter role is for you. With special rewards like the Reinforced Lasso or unique skills that allow you to see targets glowing in red when in Eagle Eye, the Bounty Hunter role has a lot to offer.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Bounty Hunter Map.png

The first thing you'll need to do in order to accept the Bounty Hunter role in Red Dead Online is to follow the steps for the "A License for Bounty Hunting," which can be seen on your map.

Bounty Hunter Girl.png

To start, head to Rhodes and visit the Sheriff's Office. Upon arrival, you'll be shown a cutscene of a Bounty Hunter bringing in the members of the Twin Rocks Gang. She will then ask if you want to be a Bounty Hunter and inform you that all you need is a license.

Bounty Hunter Sheriff.png

As she rides off, the Sheriff will ask you if you want a license, but then will give you an out because you're short on money. He will then inform you that if you ever want one, all you need to do is visit a bounty board, where you can purchase a license for 15 Gold Bars . However, if you've linked your Rockstar and Twitch Prime account by September 8, 2019, the fee will be waived.

Bounty boards can be found at the majority of Sheriff Offices, Train Stations, and Post Offices in Red Dead Online . Once you've got your license, you can return to a bounty board and pick up new bounties. Every time you successfully capture a wanted criminal, you'll receive a nice reward.

How to Accept the Collector Role

If you're a horder....I mean collector, then you might want to look into the Red Dead Online Collector role. As a Collector, players will spend their time searching the vast online world for a variety of items to add to their collections. You'll get a few special items , like the Pennington Field Shovel and skills, like the ability to sense when you're near a collectible to help you along the way. As you can probably tell, these will help make your job a lot easier.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Collector Map.png

To become a Collector in Red Dead Online , the first thing that you'll need to do is visit Madam Nazar. You can find her initially by opening your map and looking for the "To Become a Collector" mission. This will lead you east of Annesburg next to O'Creagh's Run . Finding Madam Nazar's location in Red Dead Online won't always be easy, but thankfully the initial meeting won't be too hard.

Madam Nazar OMJ.png

Upon arrival, players will begin a cutscene featuring Madam Nazar and Old Man Jones. After calling her a crook and a charlatan, the Old Man heads out, leaving the two of you alone.

Madam Nazar will then tell you a little bit about herself and read your future. She will tell you about the Collector role and offer you a job. Essentially, you'll need to hunt down what she is looking for and in exchange she will pay your a nice chunk of change.

Madam Nazar.png

To get started, players will have to pay Madam Nazar 15 Gold Bars to get a special Collector's Bad. If you don't want to start as a Collector just yet, you can visit Madam Nazar's location in Red Dead Online to purchase it at any time. If you also play GTA Online, you can find the hidden playing cards locations to waive the 15 Gold Bar fee . If not, you'll have to fork over the Gold to get your Collector's Bag.

How to Accept the Trader Role

If you've always had an entrepreneurial spirit, then the Trader role in Red Dead Online just might be for you. As a Trader, you'll spend your time hunting animals to provide materials for your business. As your business grows, you'll get some useful items and skills to help you along the way, like a Canine Companion and a reduced risk of raids on your camp.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Cripps Letter.png

The first thing that you'll need to do to accept the Trader role in Red Dead Online is visit your local post office to retrieve a letter from Cripps. Upon reading the letter, you'll find that Cripps has a business opportunity for you and want's to talk more.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Trader Map.png

You'll need to meet up with him in Armadillo, so he can pitch is business idea to you. If you open your map and look for "The Birth of a Company" mission, you'll be shown exactly where to go.

Once you arrive, you'll begin a cutscene where Cripps explains his business idea. Essentially, the two of you will be partners. You'll be required to hunt animals to provide inventory as well as deliver all sold items . Cripps on the other hand, will prepare all of the items you'll be selling, set prices, and manage the inventory. Sounds like a dream team, right?

Cripps Collector.png

Cripps will inform you that if you're interested, you'll need to put down a deposit for the business in the form of a Butcher's Table, which will cost 15 Gold Bars . You can purchase the Butcher's Table from the Wilderness Outfitters in your Camp. If you're playing on a PlayStation 4, the 15 Gold Bar fee will be waived, meaning you'll be able to become a Trader for free.

You can find the Wilderness Outfitters location in your camp by looking for the money bags icon within your camp. If you can't find your camp, here is how to set it up . Simply approach the Outfitters and speak to the man to purchase/receive the Butcher's Table.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Butchers Table.png

Once you have the table, you'll have accepted the Trader role in Red Dead Online and can begin creating a thriving business.

Sheriff's Office

Turning in

Marston returns a fugitive to the Armadillo sheriff's office.

Sheriff

Another view of the Sheriff's office.

Sheriff's Offices are small buildings that can be found throughout communities in the American West at the time of the Red Dead series.

Sheriffs, Marshals , and Deputies would organize and conduct their business out of these modest buildings. Common amenities included an office, holding cells and a small weapons armory. Most lawmen that would work there were either federally appointed officers or locally elected municipal officers, varying from one community to the next. Sheriffs would often deputize civilian community members to operate on behalf of the sheriff to assist in enforcing the law.

In-game, the Sheriff's Office can be found in most settlements and offer players bounties . Alternatively, the player may also find themselves occupying a cell if they break the law and are apprehended.

Busted! [ ]

In Red Dead Redemption , When the player is seen committing a crime, local law enforcement will attempt to apprehend the player. If captured alive, Marston will wake up in a holding cell at the nearest Sheriff's Office. However, the time spent there is unknown. When you are caught you are put in the sheriff's office for the crime(s) you committed. A cutscene will play of Marston sitting in a jail cell, with the crime(s) you committed showing up on the screen while day and night go by.

During Red Dead Redemption 2 , this continues whenever playing as Arthur and if captured alive, Arthur will be in a cell for the full day or night. A cutscene will play, with members of the gang coming to bust or bail Arthur out of jail, sometimes the player will have to evade law enforcement if a bust out is caused. When playing as John, the same occurrence takes place but Abigail comes to retrieve him by knocking out the guard and releasing John, or if the main storyline has been completed, John may bribe the guard to let him leave. John might steal the jail cell keys from a sleeping guard.

In Red Dead Redemption , If Marston commits a crime and manages to evade the initial manhunt, the player can opt to approach the Sheriff's Office and resolve their bounty. If the player does not have enough money to pay the bounty, he must assist the lawmen with other criminals. The player can pay the bounty amount or can acquire a letter of pardon by various means throughout the game, but they cannot be purchased in stores.

Bounty Hunting [ ]

In Red Dead Redemption local lawmen will post wanted posters outside of the sheriff's office. Marston can choose to collect a wanted poster and players can start the bounty hunting activity . If the fugitive is captured alive, Marston must drop off the criminal at the sheriff's office to obtain the reward. If the fugitive is killed, you must loot the body and bring back proof that you killed him.

Side Missions [ ]

Occasionally, sheriffs or their deputies may approach Marston as he is going about business in town, and ask for assistance retrieving stolen goods or getting rid of a local gang threat. This is more likely to occur as the player's fame increases. Often rewards for completing these activities will be cash .

Locations [ ]

Sheriff's offices are located in most major settlements in the game, including the town of Armadillo , MacFarlane's Ranch and Chuparosa . Some towns have other forms of law enforcement, for example Escalera has a military barracks and Blackwater has two police stations.

  • In Redemption if you pause the game just as John/Jack is surrendering to the lawmen then the animation will reset. When you un-pause the game John/Jack will be getting shot at for a brief moment before the lawmen realise that he is surrendering again.

9 new specialist roles we'd like to see in Red Dead Online

From small-town sheriff to snake oil salesman, here are some new specialist roles that could spice up Red Dead Online.

Red Dead Online Roles

I haven't been playing a heck of a lot of Red Dead Online lately—as I wrote recently, the various glitches, bugs, and infinite loading screens common with the online experience have been chasing me away. I've also gotten a little burned out on the available specialist roles: trader, bounty-hunter, moonshiner , and collector. These Red Dead Online frontier pursuits can all be fun, but they grow a bit repetitive after a while.

I'm hopeful Red Dead Online's bugs will be squashed eventually, and I'm certain more roles will be added in the future, too. In the meantime, I've been thinking about some other jobs I wouldn't mind doing with my online cowboy. Here are 9 specialist roles I'd love to see come to Red Dead Online someday.

Stagecoach driver

Red Dead Online Roles

There's something weirdly enjoyable about being a taxi driver in Grand Theft Auto. Occasionally in Red Dead Online you'll need to give someone a lift on your horse as part of a radiant mission, but I'd be perfectly happy operating a legitimate stage coach business. It's doubtful other players would be patient enough to take a ride (not when fast-travel is available) but escorting NPCs and their valuables over the countryside through all sorts of bad weather and hold-up attempts would be fun.

Speed is obviously essential, but you also don't want to jostle your passengers too much, and having to stop midway through a coach mission to repair a wagon wheel or replace scattered luggage would hurt your reputation. You could begin with a shabby little stagecoach running passengers out of Tumbleweed and progress to an elegant, upgraded coach comfortable enough for the finest, wealthiest bottoms of St. Denis.

Red Dead Online Roles

We have the bounty hunter role that lets us lasso baddies, but it's not particularly historically accurate—professional bounty hunters were exceedingly rare in the Old West, regardless of what the movies tell you. But it would be fun to become an actual sheriff. Start as a deputy in a small town breaking up saloon fights, locking up drunks, and keeping an eye on unsavory sorts, and work your way up to sheriff of one of the bigger towns—putting together posses to chase down bank robbers and locking up hardened criminals. Maybe you could even become a federal marshal. GTA Online roleplayers really get into playing cops, so I'm sure they'd love being lawmen in Red Dead Online, too.

Snake oil salesman

Red Dead Online Roles

I routinely craft effective tonics and potions in Red Dead Online, but I've got plenty of leftover ingredients. Why can't I make completely useless concoctions and then sell them to gullible townfolk, too? I can't do the sales-patter like Nigel West Dickens in Red Dead Redemption (our characters in RDO are mute) but I could have a fancy little wagon and top hat, and travel from town to town, selling ridiculously named cure-alls and elixirs to the locals, then getting the hell out of there before they discover it's just diluted opium and berry squeezings that won't really do anything to cure their dropsy or chillblains.

If your reputation plunges in a particular town, you could avoid it for a while—or just change the names of your miracle cures. People no longer trust Dr. Quackenfelder's Amazing Teething Tonic? Now it's called Professor Pepperpelt's Remarkable Brain and Blood Elixir!

Photographer

Red Dead Online Roles

There's nothing stopping me from taking pictures in Red Dead Online—I do it often and I even have my own old-timey camera. But it would be great to have it tied into a role that you can progress through by taking pictures of wildlife, landmarks, other players, and AI citizens. You could even take on specific photographic challenges, like snapping a shot of a gator attacking a boar in a swamp, or capturing a lightning bolt striking in a storm, or preserving the moment in a gunfight where someone's hat gets comically shot off. You could sell your photos to the galleries in town and work your way up to better cameras and film-developing equipment. Did you capture a weird lens flare or over-exposure? Nope, that's a ghostly apparition! Proof of the afterlife. Now the photo is even more valuable.

Anything with trains

Red Dead Online Roles

In games, I've ridden everything under the sun, from giant toads in Ark: Survival Evolved to cargo haulers in No Man's Sky. But I'm still somehow completely enchanted by trains. The first time I saw a train steaming through Red Dead Redemption 2 I just stopped my horse and watched, completely transfixed. There's just something about 'em.

So, give me some job having something to do with the train. I'll be the engineer. I'll shovel the coal into the furnace. I'll sell tickets at the station, then climb aboard and ask each passenger to show me the ticket I just sold them. I'll be one of the dudes who guards whatever is in the safe in the back. If there's a job to do on a train, I'll do it.

Red Dead Online Roles

The Red Dead Online postal service clearly doesn't need my help. It's already incredibly efficient—order something from a catalog and it'll show up in your camp or at any post office on the map immediately. But I'd still like to be a part of that magical industry beyond the couple of little radiant mail missions that already exist. I'll deliver mail on horseback or by wagon, by boat or by coach, by train (obviously!) or by attaching notes to pigeon's legs. Hell, let me pilot a hot air balloon and I'll even invent air mail.

Red Dead Online roles

There's a surprising amount of farming in RDR2 and basically none in Red Dead Online. But I enjoyed it in the singleplayer game—keeping stables clean of horse plops, toting sacks of feed here and there, milking cows, chopping wood—and even just hanging around on a farm is pleasant. I'm not quite sure how you could have a proper farm in RDO, considering how often your tiny camp disappears from the map, but I wouldn't mind raising a few chickens and pigs, tending crops, mending fences, having shootouts with the occasional livestock rustler, and hauling goods into town for market.

Gold panning

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

I just spent a couple hours riding along the rivers banks in Red Dead Redemption 2 trying to find one of the randomly appearing, extremely distrustful gold panners so I could take their picture. But I couldn't find one, so above is a picture of Tom Waits from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

I'd like to do some gold panning of my own in RDO, though, setting up my little operation along a river's edge, sifting through the muck and mud just hoping to catch a little glint off a flake of gold. Naturally, finding a nice big nugget would be exciting, not to mention nerve-wracking as you attempted to safely reach a fence or merchant to sell it to.

Red Dead Online Roles

The idea of doggedly chipping away at a tunnel wall with a pickaxe while the entire beautiful, expansive game world is out there seems a bit unpleasant, but I wouldn't mind doing it in small doses. Plus, if you're blowing up a bunch of dynamite underground you know you're going to find something besides just coal—dinosaur bones, rare gems, a mineral vein, or maybe a bigfoot skeleton. Haul the coal and whatever else you dig up down to the tracks and sell it to other towns on the train line.

And don't forget to take some medicine to protect you from black lung. In fact, I think I know the perfect snake oil salesman.

Christopher Livingston

Chris started playing PC games in the 1980s, started writing about them in the early 2000s, and (finally) started getting paid to write about them in the late 2000s. Following a few years as a regular freelancer, PC Gamer hired him in 2014, probably so he'd stop emailing them asking for more work. Chris has a love-hate relationship with survival games and an unhealthy fascination with the inner lives of NPCs. He's also a fan of offbeat simulation games, mods, and ignoring storylines in RPGs so he can make up his own.
