How to fix “Webpage is using significant energy”
The Safari Browser error “This webpage is using significant energy. Closing it may improve the responsiveness of your Mac.” is generally due to overloading the RAM memory with heavy web pages and tabs. This article will help you fix the “webpage is using significant energy” error.
Why Safari is overloaded
The underlying reason for the “This webpage is using significant energy” error is your Mac’s resources being stretched too thin. This might either be the result of too many tabs open or even just a few tabs with websites that are continuously refreshing and loading up new scripts and content.
A few of the easiest ways to fix this error is to force quit the Safari browser, clear browser cache and closed the less useful tabs. If none of that had any result, proceed with a few more steps below.
1. Close less useful tabs
Opening 100 tabs in your Safari browser and expect it to run butter smooth, which is not a good idea.
I advise you should close all the irrelevant tabs when not in use. And in case you want them to visit later, you can always bookmark them or put them into your reading list. If the alert persists, you can force quit the Safari browser and run it again.
2. Empty Safari’s cache and cookies
Browser Cache is a temporary file and storage database in your browser that helps certain websites load faster and provide better usability. But if you don’t clean browser cache time to tie, it can slow down your browser and, in some cases, ruin your browsing experience.
The error message This webpage is using significant energy. Closing it may improve the responsiveness of your Mac can be sometimes fixed by clearing the browser cache manually.
To clean your cache in Safari:
- Go Safari ➙ Preferences in the menu bar (or use ⌘ + ,).
- Navigate to the Advanced tab and check the box “Show Develop menu in menu bar.”
- Now select the Develop menu in menu bar and click to Empty Caches.
- Restart Safari to make sure the cache is clear.
In addition, it could be beneficial to delete your cookies:
- Open Preferences once again.
- Go to the Privacy tab ➙ Manage Website Data…
- Click ⌘ + A to select all fields.
- Remove All.
After clearing the cache/cookies successfully, all your websites will function normally.
3. Turn off all Safari extensions
Extensions can use much of your resources. So disabling them might actually help the problem, especially if you have lots going at the same time.
To turn off Safari extensions:
- Fire up Preferences
- Go to Extensions.
- Uncheck all boxes to disable your extensions.
- Restart Safari to see if the error has disappeared.
4. Disable plug-ins
Internet plug-ins and other add-ons can also be the reasons why Safari is acting weirdly.
Here are the steps to install a content blocker in Safari Mac:
- Launch the Safari browser on the computer.
- Navigate to Preference… and switch to the Advanced settings tab.
- Safari Preferences menu under Apple Logo
- Enable the checkbox for Stop plug-ins to save power.
5. Update Safari and macOS
MacOS developers keep updating the OS for better resource management, security, and performance. If your device is relatively old and you’re using some old mac OS version, then you definitely need to update your system.
Here are the steps to Update macOS System:
- Select System Preferences from the Apple apple logo.
- Open Software Update to automatically check for updates.
- This will check and let you know if any updates are available.
- Click on Upgrade Now for updating OS.
We suggest that you don’t worry about this alert, because Safari, by sending you this error message, is just looking for you and is attempting to warn you of a website that’s drawing on system resources.
But some things are outside of your control. If you get this error message and you don’t notice a significant reduction in performance or battery life, then it may be best to just ignore it. We hope that Apple addresses this warning message in future versions of Safari and macOS.

This Webpage Is Using Significant Memory/Energy on Safari, What to Do?
Many Safari-users found that when using Safari on a Mac, " This webpage is using signific ant memory (or energy). Closing it may improve the responsiveness of your Mac " will suddenly pop up. Some users also reported that this message appeared when they tried to use Safari to open Netflix, Facebook, and websites such as CNN, CBS, MSN and so on. Many a user also encountered the same error when using another browser, Firefox.
Why Does Safari Keep Saying: This webpage is using significant memory (energy)?
Currently, there is no clear reason to explain why this error occurred. But it's related to the update of macOS High Sierra for the problem only came out after users have upgraded the system to macOS High Sierra on their MacBook. The problem hasn't been seen on macOS Sierra, OS X El Capitan or earlier.
In this regard, here are six easy ways for you to figure out how to fix "This webpage is using significant memory(energy)" on Safari.
1. Force Quit Safari
It's a simple way to quit Safari. Open Apple icon, then click Force Quit Application. After that, choose Safari in the app window. At last, click Force Quit button to quit.
2. Turn off Extensions on Safari
If you want to figure out why the error "this webpage is using significant memory/energy" pops up, turning off Safari Extensions is the way to go.
Step 1 . Choose Preference from the Safari menu. Step 2 . Select the Extensions icon, then you'll see many extensions from the list. Choose one extension. Step 3 . To turn off that extension, deselect the Enable checkbox. Step 4 . Now, it's time to see whether if the "significant memory/energy" error comes back after turning off an extension. If the answer is yes, clicking Updates to update the extension or you can delete the extension by clicking the Uninstall button.
3. Delete Internet Plug-ins from Safari
Internet plug-ins and other add-ons can also be the reasons why Safari is acting weirdly. So deleting unused plug-ins may help to fix the report of the webpage with significant memory.
Step 1:Quit Safari and Open Library folders
Open Go > Go to Folder from the menu bar. Then type /Library and click Go to open the Library folder.
Step 2: Remove Files from Library Folders
The following Library folders contain files for Safari add-ons. Move the listed files in these folders to the Trash:
- Internet Plug-Ins (Keep in mind that do not remove these files: Default Browser.plugin, nslQTScriptablePlugin.xpt, Quartz Composer.webplugin, or QuickTime Plugin.plugin.)
- Input Methods
- InputManagers
- ScriptingAdditions
Step 3: Put the Files Back to Library Folders
See whether removing the files from these folders resolves the issue. If it works out, quit Safari again. Then gradually put the files back to Library folders until you find the file that is causing the problem.
4. Clear Safari History, Cookies and Cache
At the very beginning, I would like to explain what are cookies. Cookies are files on your Mac which help to keep the information of what you've done on a website. To remove history and cache of Safari, there is a useful app for you to clear cookies, history on Safari at once: FonePaw MacMaster , which can remove data that you don't need completely. The following steps below are to help clear Safari's history and cache on Safari.
Step 1 . Download and install FonePaw MacMaster on Mac. Step 2 . Select Privacy option. Step 3 . Click Scan. Wait until scanning is done, choose Safari. Tick Cookies, Search History and more, click Clean button so as to clear Safari history.
5. Switch to Google Chrome For Help
If the problem has not been resolved, you can use Google Chrome to replace Safari. The message "this webpage is using significant memory or energy" haven't been found on Google Chrome.
6. Update or Downgrade macOS
The error appears only after upgrading to macOS High Sierra. So you can try upgrading your MacBook or iMac to the latest macOS Mojave version or downgrading High Sierra to an earlier version.
Above is the full guide to figure out how to fix "This webpage is using significant memory(energy)" on Safari.

I am using OS X El Capitan on a 2015 Macbook Pro with Safari 11.1.2 and just received this message while on a webpage. You assertion it is related to the High Sierra update would therefore appear to be incorrect.
Hey! Yeah, I agree! I am using macOSMojave and still I have this message!
I'm also using Mojave and I still keep getting this message. I called apple sometime last year and the tech seemed like she had never heard of the problem. Re-installed Mojave and didn't help one dang bit!! Computer slows to a crawl when typing and when I try to close the window I'm on, I have to click the red close button 30 or 40 times! The colored ball comes up and keeps on spinning and spinning forever. Has anyone found a solution for this???
Are you still having this issue?
I was. I just installed Big Sur and so far, no problem.
This is happening on Mojave so it is defiantly not related to High Sierra at all. Can someone please fix this, it is driving me mad! ????
I upgraded to Mojave and it's still happening. I spoke with a tech sometime last year when I had High Sierra and the tech didn't seem to know anything about this. I re-installed High Sierra but shortly upgraded to Mojave hoping that would fix the problem. No such luck!
So no head fix?
*Smashes phone; stomps skateboard*
"Wonders will never cease" I've heard that statement several times over the years, but have never had the opportunity to use it myself.....until now! I don't have a clue just exactly what I did, but I haven't had that dreaded "webpage is using significant memory/energy" notice appear on my screen in over a week now! I re-installed Mojave - didn't help at all. But then I went thru finder and dumped anything and everything I no-longer needed from documents, downloads, recents, desktop....everything. Then got rid of "Ad Block" and installed another one from the App Store, and lo and behold....NO MORE "Webpage is using...."! One full week of peace and internet bliss. Don't give up folks, because somehow, someway there is a solution to this problem.
@Yorgi1950 - Glad to hear you found a solution! Forgive me if you already answered my question in your post already, it's early, and my coffee has not kicked in yet, lol. Is Truth Finder the extension you are using now? If not, which on did you find that works, and does it block ads in YouTube videos effectively like Adblock Plus? Is it configurable? (i.e. can you whitelist and can you turn it off at will if you need want to view something on a site but don't want to whitelist the site)? I am running Mojave 10.14.6 (just ugraded from High Sierra about a week ago). Thank you, for any help you can provide. Marie
Hi Marie, The only TruthFinder I know of is the website you use to get some personal info on someone. I also have never used YouTube, or Facebook for that matter. (I know, I'm a relic from the past! LOL). I know what whitelisting is, but also have never used it. Do I sound like a broken record? LOL! I am so sorry I can't be of help to you. As I stated, cleaning out Finder of anything I no longer needed seemed to do the trick. I have been thinking of replacing Mojave with the new Catalina that has been released. Wish I could help you, but I think I may have been a dinosaur in my past life, as computers are like learning a new language to me; it just ain't gonna happen!
This only happens to me on Yahoo and it still happens with Mojave. I have tried setting preferences for Yahoo to disable any extensions in Safari and additionally making sure the ad blockers themselves (that are in my toolbar) were also disabled for the site), it still does not change how much memory consumption Yahoo uses. Perhaps I need a different ad blocking program that is just as effective at blocking ads, but also blocks ads in videos on YouTube? I have Adblock and Adblock Plus installed. I only recently upgraded from High Sierra (in the last week). I am not going to downgrade software or remove my plugins, so that answer will not help. Any suggestions for a safe adblocking software that works with both Safari (primarily) and Chrome that will also block ads in YouTube videos on Safari?
Remove Adblock. It is nasty-ware (my opinion). Adguard works much better and much faster.

Safari - Using Significant Energy
Even when only one tab is opened on Safari browser, Safari shows as “Using Significant Energy”. Is this something to be concerned about? Not sure if this is normal?
Using Catalina 10.15.6 on a brand new MacBook Pro 13”.
Any advice would be appreciated.

In truth there is little you can do to fix this as its often the web page you’re viewing is forcing your system to run code which is looping and/or has a memory leak.
You still want to make sure you have a good antivirus, malware and spyware apps to reduce your risk of getting infected. Also make sure you don’t have any Safari plug-ins which is causing issues.

Any particular Malware and Spyware apps you would recommend @danj ? For antivirus, I use Bit Defender. Any thoughts?
When you state that a web page might be forcing the system to run looping code etc. - would just the Google home page also do this for example? I have no extensions and plug-ins installed at the moment. I notice that even if I simply have the google homepage open on a single Safari tab, it "uses significant energy". What could I do to resolve a memory leak, if that is indeed the problem?

MalwareBites is a good tool to have!
What happens if you just open a empty widow or Apples web site?
As far as looking for memory leaks you have Activity Monitor for that.
Aug 31, 2020 by Dan
@danj Thanks will install MalwareBites. I think BitDefender Antivirus for Mac has been slowing down my system a little - or perhaps I am imagining things. Not sure.
Been noticing some strange behaviour with Safari:
Upon a reboot of the MacBook and when opening an empty window - No apps using significant energy.
When opening www.apple.com - Safari using significant energy.
When opening a blank window after a reboot and a minute or two of browsing - Safari using significant energy.
Posting some screenshots of the Activity Monitor.
@sz1809 - Well you have something lurking inside of Safari !!
Did you add any plug-ins? You do need to run MalwareBites to see if there is something in Safari.
You could also try creating a new user account to see if its reacting the same way.

@danj I ran a scan with Malwarebytes, no threats and PUPs detected. On Safari, I when I noticed this issue, no plugins and extensions were installed. The "Using significant Energy" issue started showing up from the time I used the MacBook when it was brand new last week. I recently installed Bitdefender AV so it has now installed three extensions in Safari which I have not enabled, but even when there were no extensions installed, I noticed this behaviour. I will crate a new user account and see if Safari is behaving the same way. Will update.

How to fix "this website is using significant memory" on a mac.
What do you do when Safari tells you a website is hogging more than its fair share?
Quick Links
What the "significant memory" warning really means, things you can try that may help, ditch plugins and extensions to speed up safari.
Your Mac only has a finite amount of memory available, so if a process starts to use more than its fair share, the rest of the system can suffer. Sometimes, Safari will warn you that a website is using a lot of memory, but what can you do about it and how do you stop it from coming back?
Your computer uses physical memory, or RAM (random access memory), to store data that needs to be rapidly accessed by the system. The more memory you have, the longer you can go before running out. To make the most of available memory, the solid-state drive is used as a temporary location to " swap " data in and out as required, which is why a Mac with twice as much memory isn't necessarily twice as capable.
Some websites require more system resources than others. This is often the case with complex websites like social media feeds or web applications like Google Docs which handle a lot of data. There also may be scripts running in the background of a webpage that introduce additional overhead.
The "significant memory" warning is an indicator that a tab is asking for a lot of system resources, which may lead to a performance drop. More memory being used by one process means there is less memory available to the system overall. This can result in slowdowns, crashes, and instability.
This warning will only appear above the tab causing the issue, so you may need to cycle through tabs if you suspect a web page is causing your computer to perform poorly.
The easiest remedy is to refresh the tab in question. This should force Safari to reallocate resources, freeing up any memory that's tied down and removing the warning. Unfortunately, a problematic website is likely to keep asking for more resources and so the warning can come back.
Safari splits tabs up by process in Activity Monitor (accessible via Spotlight or under Applications > Utilities). Access the "Memory" tab then arrange the "Memory" column by descending to see which processes are using the most memory at the top. You can quit any webpage process to force a reload.
You can take the more drastic route of quitting Safari altogether (using Command+Q or simply right-clicking on the dock in the icon). If Safari has become unresponsive you may need to force quit the process to restore performance.
Sometimes warnings such as these can be caused by problems rendering a webpage as a result of an outdated browser. Install any available updates for Safari under System Preferences > Software Update is recommended for both performance and security reasons .
If the website in question has an issue with Safari in particular, installing and using a second browser like Chrome or Firefox could be the answer. Safari is a solid choice for Mac users on account of being highly optimized, but it often doesn't enjoy the same support as more popular cross-platform browsers.
If you're seeing this error a lot, you might want to consider upgrading your Mac . If your machine is relatively new, it's likely a problem with the website and you may want to submit a support ticket or seek an alternative. Accessing the website periodically rather than leaving it open all of the time could work too.
Webpages using more than their fair share of resources is an issue that appears from time to time, but there may be more you can do to improve Safari's performance across all websites.
Consider ditching web plugins and removing unnecessary browser extensions to reduce Safari's overall footprint, freeing up more resources for thirsty webpages and other processes.

Hey folks, I typically have Safari open and running with 3-4 tabs. Nothing crazy. But whenever I'm on battery power - and I check the battery icon in the menu, Safari is always either listed 1st or second as an app that is "using significant energy". Outlook is typically the other one. Outlook makes sense (I guess) because Microsoft. And it's fetching mail, etc. But why/how is Safari using significant energy just sitting there open? And more importantly - is there anything I can do to change that apart from shutting it down? Thanks in advance.

What Mac do you have? If there’s any sort of video content and you’ve got a Mac with a dGPU, it will almost always utilise that and use more power as a result.
I have the new 2018 MacBook Pro 13" with Touch Bar.

chabig said: We can't help you. Obviously, something on one or more of those tabs is running code. It could be trackers, advertisements, anything at all. You don't have to shutdown or quit Safari to stop it. Just close the tabs when you're done with them. Click to expand...
It was a fair question. But it’s just too hard to answer. One other thing...if you have Flash, uninstall it. If you don’t, don’t install it. I also keep Java turned off, which I believe is the default to begin with. Still, sites can use JavaScript, which can lead to energy use. Safari is pretty aggressive about not running stuff that you aren’t interacting with, though.

I think this is normal, and if you check the energy usage in activity monitor you will see it's actually quite minimal and nothing concerning,.

Apple to introduce new Safari browser assistant for iPhones with iOS 18
The upcoming ios 18 is poised to be the most significant advancement in iphone's evolution yet with a new safari browsing assistant being one of the key features..
Listen to Story
Interestingly, the hint at the integration of a browsing assistant in Safari is in line with ongoing speculations about new generative AI features slated for release on the iPhone with iOS 18. If it's true, the AI assistance will be similar to the feature. It's worth noting that AI capabilities are already present in several, such as Microsoft Edge, which includes a Copilot feature powered by GPT-4 and Arc Search.
In addition, lvarez spotted a function named "Encrypted Visual Search" in the code, but its specifics are still unclear.
Apart from the rumoured AI assistant improvements, iOS 18 is expected to bring several significant updates. We can anticipate AI integration across various iOS applications.
For example, Apple Music might curate personalised playlists based on your listening habits, while stock apps like Mail and Notes could gain AI-powered features for improved functionality. Siri, once sluggish, is set for a substantial upgrade with the integration of large language models (LLMs). This will transform it into a comprehensive "ultimate virtual assistant" with improved conversational capabilities and deeper Shortcuts integration.
iPhone users might finally be able to ditch the limitations of iMessage and enjoy features like enhanced video quality and read receipts when messaging Android users through rumoured RCS support. iOS 18 might also grant you more control over the home screen just like an Android phone. Speculations suggest the ability to create blank spaces and customise icon arrangements for a truly personalised experience.
Apple might introduce "Adaptive Voice Shortcuts" and potentially allow adjustable font sizes across more apps with iOS 18. The AirPods Pro could even gain functionality similar to hearing aids. Apple Maps might become more competitive with features like custom route planning and potentially the addition of topographic maps for outdoor enthusiasts.
While Apple hasn't officially confirmed which iPhones will support iOS 18, rumours suggest a wide range of devices, including many models from 2018 and later, could be eligible. This could potentially include the iPhone XS and XR, although that remains uncertain.

Report: people are bailing on safari after dma makes changing defaults easier, indie browsers report significant spikes in users in the past month..
Ashley Belanger - Apr 10, 2024 5:15 pm UTC
Smaller web browsers are gaining traction in the European Union after the Digital Markets Act (DMA) started requiring designated gatekeepers like Google and Apple to make it easier to switch default web browsers on devices.
Previously, tech giants were able to lock users into setting their own browsers as defaults—or at least make it complicated to update the defaults—offering the majority of users their own browsing services for free while collecting data used for ad-targeting. This, the EU feared, kept users from switching to defaults that offered superior or more private web browsing experiences.
Reuters collected data from six companies, confirming that, when presented with a choice screen, many EU users will swap out default browsers like Chrome or Safari for more privacy-focused options. And because iPhones have a larger market share than Google-branded phones in the EU, Apple is emerging as the biggest loser, Reuters reported, noting that under the DMA, "the growth for smaller browsers is currently coming at the cost of Safari."
Some indie browsers are benefiting more than others from users shifting away from Safari. In the month since the DMA took effect on March 7 , the Cyprus-based Aloha Browser told Reuters that its total users in the EU spiked by 250 percent in March. In Belgium, Aloha users increased threefold, Aloha said in a press release .
Aloha attracts about 10 million monthly average users globally by promising "total privacy." The company profits from paid subscriptions to premium features like "advanced VPN and privacy-oriented AI," instead of from tracking users for invasive ad-targeting, the press release said.
Aloha does not and has "never collected, stored or monetized any user data of any kind, making Aloha the only major browser that does not receive any money for user data," Aloha CEO Andrew Frost Moroz said in the press release, adding that "we were not surprised to see this increase."
"By enacting these regulations, the EU has done two things: They've cut down on some of big tech's monopolistic practices, and they've made consumers more aware of their choices in the tools they can use online," Frost Moroz said. "And many of those consumers are clearly saying they want to take back control of their digital privacy and personal data."
At least five other browsers have also benefited, Reuters reported, confirming that Norway's Vivaldi and Opera, Germany's Ecosia, and US-based Brave and DuckDuckGo all reported increased users after the DMA took effect. Jan Standal, Opera's vice president, did not share specific numbers but said that Opera is experiencing "record user numbers in the EU right now."
While these numbers are encouraging for smaller browsers hoping to gain a larger market share in the EU, some browser companies have criticized Apple and Google for "slowing the migration of mobile users to new browser choices" by rolling out "slow and clunky" updates, Reuters reported.
Vivaldi CEO Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner directly criticized Apple's process for swapping default browsers as "just so convoluted that it's easiest for (users) to select Safari or potentially some other known name." The CEO told Reuters that Apple only displayed the required choice screen—currently "curated for each of the 27 countries in the EU" and "showing up to 11 browsers in addition to Safari"—when users clicked on Safari and said Apple failed to provide useful information about alternative choices.

Safari "Using Significant Energy"
Even when only one tab is opened on Safari browser, Safari shows as “Using Significant Energy”. I am not watching any video on the tab and this occurs even when the Google homepage is the only one page/tab open. Is this something to be concerned about? Not sure if this is normal?

U.S. Warns China About Its Exports and Support for Russia
Beijing’s economic policies threaten American workers, Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen told Vice Premier He Lifeng in the southern city of Guangzhou.
By Alan Rappeport
Alan Rappeport is traveling with Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen in China.
Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen confronted her Chinese counterpart about China’s surging exports of inexpensive electric vehicles and other green energy goods, saying that they were a threat to American jobs and urging Beijing to scale back its industrial strategy, the U.S. government has said.
Ms. Yellen also warned her counterpart, Vice Premier He Lifeng, that Chinese companies could face “significant consequences” if they provided material support for Russia’s war on Ukraine, according to a Treasury Department summary released on Saturday of two days of talks in the southern city of Guangzhou.
The meetings on Friday and Saturday were an effort by the world’s two largest economies to address trade and geopolitical disputes as the countries try to steady a relationship that hit a low last year.
The U.S. and China agreed to hold additional talks in the future about curbing international money laundering and fostering “balanced growth.” The latter is aimed partly at addressing concerns that China’s focus on factory production to bolster its sputtering economy has resulted in a glut of exports that is distorting global markets.
The surge of heavily subsidized green technology exports from China has been a focus of Ms. Yellen’s second trip as Treasury secretary to the country. Cheap Chinese electric vehicles, batteries and solar panels are of particular concern to the Biden administration, which has been investing in those sectors at home.
“I think the Chinese realize how concerned we are about the implications of their industrial strategy for the United States, for the potential to flood our markets with exports that make it difficult for American firms to compete,” Ms. Yellen told reporters after the meetings.
Before her talks with the Chinese officials, Ms. Yellen met with American and European executives whose businesses are operating in China. She listened to their concerns about China’s treatment of foreign firms and discussed how the Chinese export push was playing out across the global economy.
Ms. Yellen received a warm welcome in Guangzhou, but China has been pushing back against the idea that its economic strategy poses a threat.
In a social media post on Saturday, Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, argued that Chinese exports were a public good.
“Globally, high-quality industrial capacity and new-quality productive forces are not excessive, but in dire scarcity,” Mr. Liu wrote . “How to ensure the world, especially developing countries, benefits from such capacity is a constant test for human conscience and ingenuity.”
After the conclusion of the talks on Saturday, the Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua reported that Chinese officials had expressed their own frustrations to Ms. Yellen about American economic strategy.
“China has expressed serious concern over the U.S. economic and trade restrictive measures against China, and responded fully on the issue of production capacity,” Xinhua said.
Ms. Yellen acknowledged that the issue was complicated for China. “It’s not going to be solved in an afternoon or a month,” she said.
Beyond economic issues, Ms. Yellen and Mr. He discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine and growing concern in the United States that Chinese companies were helping to support Moscow’s military. The Biden administration has already been imposing trade restrictions on Chinese companies that it has accused of violating U.S. sanctions.
“We have been clear with China that we see Russia as gaining support from goods that Chinese firms are supplying to Russia,” Ms. Yellen said.
She added that Mr. He had told her that China has a policy of not providing Russia with military support. She expressed optimism that the two sides could cooperate on the issue.
Ms. Yellen was traveling on Saturday afternoon from Guangzhou to Beijing, where she was scheduled to meet on Sunday with Premier Li Qiang and Yin Yong, Beijing’s mayor.
Siyi Zhao contributed reporting from Seoul.

Hawaii is "on the verge of catastrophe," locals say, as water crisis continues
By Li Cohen
Updated on: April 11, 2024 / 8:23 AM EDT / CBS News
In Hawaii, one of the most important sayings is ola i ka wai , "water is life" — a phrase that not only sums up what it means to exist on an island, but what it means to live, period. But now, one of the largest of the island chain's land masses is facing a triple threat to its sole freshwater source, and if it isn't addressed soon, one community member says, "we're in deep trouble."
Despite being surrounded by seemingly endless ocean, freshwater on Oahu, the third-largest of Hawaii's six major islands, is not easily accessible. The island relies on an underground aquifer for its water supply. Replenishing that aquifer is a decades-long natural process, as it takes a single drop of water roughly 25 years to make it there from the sky.
And recent years have seen compounding problems: less rain, leading to significant droughts , and repeated jet fuel leaks and PFAS chemical spills contaminating water systems. All of this significantly limits available water use for locals, many of whom say tourism is only worsening the situation. Just months ago, the world's largest surfing wave pool opened up on the island — filled with freshwater.
"They're not using it to drink or to support life, they're using it to make money. They're commodifying it," said Healani Sonoda-Pale, who is Native Hawaiian and a member of advocacy group O'ahu Water Protectors. "… We are on the verge of a greater catastrophe."
"We are in a water crisis , that has to be made very clear," Wayne Tanaka, director of Sierra Club of Hawai'i, told CBS News, saying that if the reasons for this crisis aren't soon addressed, "We may come to a point where we have to decide … who gets water and who doesn't."
Surrounded by water, Oahu runs dry
On an island, rain is essential.
Statewide, rainfall averages range widely, from just 8 inches to around 400 inches a year, Thomas Giambelluca, director of the University of Hawaii at Mānoa Water Resources Research Center, told CBS News. There is a massive difference just minutes apart. Some areas are extremely dry, while others have the wettest climate in the U.S.
At the university campus where CBS News spoke with Giambelluca, the average yearly rainfall is about 60 inches a year, while nearby Waikiki, two miles away, gets 20 inches.
Water supplies depend on that rainfall, with drier areas having a smaller supply. But those drier areas also face higher demand, as they are where tourists flock and many locals reside. And because the drinking water supply is almost entirely from groundwater, shifting weather patterns can pose a major problem.
"We have the problem of getting water to where it's needed from where it can be found," Giambelluca said. "...When the rain doesn't come, we don't have any second chance, we don't have any other way to get our water supply. We can't pipe it from a nearby state."
Currently, the entire island of Oahu is considered " abnormally dry ," according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. "Severe and persistent droughts," prompting water conservation measures, are not uncommon, Giambelluca said. While officials could work to desalinate ocean water, "that's not the preferred way to get drinking water," he added.
"It's very energy-intensive, and so that would be in opposition to our goals of reducing our dependency on fossil fuels in Hawaii, reducing our emissions," he said.
And as global temperatures continue to rise, that will only get worse — not just on Oahu, but across Hawaii.
"Hawaii is getting drier and drier, particularly since the 1980s," state climatologist Pao-Shin Chu said. "...The consecutive dry days become longer and longer. That's very clear."
But drought isn't the only issue. Warmer global temperatures also fuel more extreme precipitation, bringing more rain in a shorter duration. According to Giambelluca, that won't necessarily help maintain the water supply, as steep watersheds will channel that water into flooding, and rising sea levels will prevent rainwater from having a place to go — not even into the aquifer. Rising seas are already causing significant erosion on coastlines.
Giambelluca explained that as sea levels rise, the ocean will infiltrate the underground freshwater system, physically pushing that resource out while also infiltrating wells and other components of the water supply system that will need to be adjusted.
"It's already affecting those water systems," Giambelluca said. "...There's no question that climate change is going to make problems caused by other factors worse."
In fact, some evidence suggests that after 2030, there will be less groundwater to extract from, Chu said, adding, "that's going to be a problem."
"Without water, there is no life"
For Anthony Deluze, it already is a problem. He manages farmland on Oahu, nestled in between Pearl Harbor, a highway and a shopping center. His land is spring-fed, which he uses to primarily grow taro, a root vegetable considered a sacred staple in Native Hawaiian food and culture. But climate change has made growing taro for his family and community much more difficult.
"The biggest challenge is water," he said. "...Without water, there is no life."
Deluze has managed the land he is on for more than a decade, but within the past five years, he said, the water table has significantly dropped, reducing the available freshwater while more seawater seeps in. Between that and the ongoing drought issues, he didn't have even half the amount of water needed to properly maintain his crops.
"A healthy lo'i [water taro] system needs about 250,000 gallons per day per acre for it to be healthy," he said. "... We were probably getting, in the summertime, about 35,000 per day. And if we're lucky, maybe about 40- to 45,000 in the wintertime, per day. And this is three acres, so we're not even hitting a fraction of what we need."
But it's not just a lack of water, it's a lack of clean water.
"Water quality and water quantity are tied together," Giambelluca said. "...Water contamination is always going to impact water quantity, water availability."
Across the highway from Deluze's farm lies Pearl Harbor and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, where in November 2021, there was a jet fuel leak in the Navy's World War II-era underground storage tanks. Nearly 20,000 gallons of jet fuel leaked out of the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility, contaminating the base's water system and sickening thousands of military families and locals, many of whom say they are still reeling from the health impacts.
The Board of Water Supply instantly had to shut down three wells that supply water to the island, as the aquifer sits just below Red Hill . A year later, that same facility saw a major leak of 1,300 gallons of AFFF, a fire suppressant that contains PFAS, otherwise known as " forever chemicals ."
"We can't farm with fuel; we can't live, period," Deluze said.
The military has since cleaned up the bulk of the lost fuel and chemicals, but many officials believe some of both could have ended up in the environment regardless.
"Red Hill…did spark off this crisis," Sierra Club's Wayne Tanaka told CBS News.
"If we lose our water, every aspect of life will be impacted and upended. Not just for the next few years, but for the next few generations."

Record reduction of 2023 ETS emissions due largely to boost in renewable energy
Last year’s emissions under the EU’s Emission Trading System (ETS) show the most significant annual emissions reductions since the ETS was launched in 2005. The main driver is the power sector’s significant progress in decarbonisation.
The data reported by EU Member States as of 2 April 2024 show a 15.5% decrease in emissions in 2023, compared to 2022 levels. With this development, ETS emissions are now around 47% below 2005 levels and well on track to achieve the 2030 target of -62%.
The observed trend confirms the effectiveness and efficiency of the EU’s cap and trade system as the main policy instrument for the decarbonisation of the European economy.
Electricity generation – significant increase in production of renewable energy
The most important driver for the record decrease in EU ETS emissions has been the power sector, with emissions from electricity production having decreased by an impressive 24% compared to 2022. This decrease is due to a substantial increase in renewable electricity production (primarily wind and solar), at the expense of both coal and gas.
The recovery of hydro and nuclear power due to more favourable climate conditions also contributed to the emissions decrease, but to a lesser extent.
Industry – emissions continue to decrease
Regarding energy intensive industry sectors, a reduction of emissions of around 7% compared to 2022 can be observed. The emission reductions in the industry sector are the result of a combination of reduced output and efficiency gains which are mainly visible in cement, iron and steel.
Aviation – further rebound in emissions
Aviation emissions increased compared to 2022, by around 10%. This is a consequence of the aviation industry’s continued rebound from the traffic collapse during the COVID19 pandemic.

BLUETTI brings hassle-free solar power solutions to California, Massachusetts, and North Carolina
BLUETTI, a pioneering provider of renewable energy storage systems, is expanding its Solar+ program to three new states – California, Massachusetts, and North Carolina. This comprehensive one-stop solution aims to simplify the transition to solar power for homeowners, offering a seamless path to energy independence and reduced utility bills.
Why CA, MA, and NC?
The decision to extend BLUETTI’s services to these states is rooted in the persistent challenges of power outages and high electricity costs faced by residents.
California tops the list for the highest number of power disruptions, while Massachusetts and North Carolina rank among the states with the most frequent outages. Simultaneously, these states have some of the nation’s highest average residential electricity rates, further amplifying the demand for alternative energy solutions.
BLUETTI’s Solar+ Program addresses these pain points by providing an all-inclusive solar and battery home power solution. The modular BLUETTI battery system seamlessly integrates with rooftop solar panels, storing and supplying power to ensure uninterrupted energy during outages or nighttime usage. This setup can potentially reduce monthly electricity expenses by up to 50% or more, based on BLUETTI’s customer reports from Texas.
Moreover, homeowners can further enhance their savings by participating in Virtual Power Plant (VPP) programs, enabling them to sell excess solar power back to the grid for additional revenue. What sets BLUETTI’s Solar+ Program apart is its unwavering commitment to simplifying the solar transition process.
From equipment manufacturing to design, financing, installation, and ongoing service, BLUETTI handles every aspect with premium care, saving customers time and money. Homeowners need only deal with one brand and use one app to control their entire solar power system.
“Many of our customers have reported being protected from power outages and experiencing a significant reduction in their electricity bills after joining the Solar+ Program,” says Francisco Brown, BLUETTI’s Texas Branch CEO. “This is made possible by harnessing free solar energy and optimizing energy usage with peak load shifting features in Time of Use areas.”
How to go solar with BLUETTI
The process begins with a free consultation with BLUETTI energy experts, who provide tailored and visualized solar system designs based on the homeowner’s preferences and needs. Once accepted, BLUETTI manages all aspects, including paperwork, permit applications, installation, and inspection, making the process as effortless as ordering pizza online.
BLUETTI’s dedication extends beyond installation, with dedicated project managers providing ongoing support, addressing queries, maintenance needs, and system optimization. Financial options are also available upon request, ensuring that a reliable solar system from BLUETTI remains affordable.
By leveraging decades of expertise in renewable energy, BLUETTI optimizes cost efficiency and ensures a competitive end price without compromising quality. This approach allows customers to secure a comprehensive solar and battery solution while investing only in the cost of a single solar system.
As BLUETTI expands its Solar+ Program to California, Massachusetts, and North Carolina, it continues its mission of providing clean and reliable energy for all, contributing to a more sustainable future.
For more information about Solar+, visit BLUETTI’s Solar+ Program website. 9to5Mac readers can save on Solar+ both online and directly with a Solar+ sales rep. Use code 9t5Solar+ to save $800 when working with a Solar+ sales rep. Discount code 9t5EP800 will net 5% off for online orders .

MPSC approves Indiana Michigan Power Co.'s power supply cost recovery reconciliation, removes $11.6M from customer costs
April 11, 2024
News media contact: Matt Helms 517-284-8300
Customer Assistance: 800-292-9555
The Michigan Public Service Commission today approved Indiana Michigan Power Co.’s (I&M) application for approval of its power supply cost recovery (PSCR) reconciliation for the 12 months ending Dec. 31, 2021 ( Case No. U-20805 ), disallowing the recovery of more than $11.6 million in customer costs.
The Commission set the company’s PSCR reconciliation beginning balance at $4,386,719.
The Commission disallowed $1,025,628 in costs I&M sought to recover for power generated by the Ohio Valley Electric Corp. (OVEC) through an intercompany power agreement, under MPSC Code of Conduct rules governing transactions between affiliated companies. The Commission previously issued a warning under Section 7 of Public Act 304 that it would be unlikely to approve full costs of power supply from uneconomic contracts for electricity generated by the coal-fired OVEC plants.
The Commission also disallowed $10,149,232 in energy-only costs associated with the Rockport plant for generation that I&M receives through a unit power agreement with its affiliate, American Electric Power Generating Company Inc. The Commission found that the costs of energy generated by the Rockport plant were well above other long-term supply benchmarks, and given the affiliate nature of the facility, these costs should also be disallowed.
In addition, the MPSC disallowed $496,716 in costs for the company’s shortfall of nearly 10.4 million kilowatt hours of energy cost savings I&M would have avoided had the utility met its statutory 1% target in its energy waste reduction plan laid out in Case No. U-20867 .
Attorney General Dana Nessel’s Office intervened in the case. MPSC Staff also participated.
COMMISSION SETS NEXT STEPS FOR COLLABORATIVE ON NATURAL GAS UTILITY MUTUAL AID AGREEMENTS AND CONTINGENCY PLANNING
The Commission summarized the most recent report of the MPSC’s Mutual Aid Agreements and Transmission Contingency Planning Workgroup, a collaborative that’s working on the development of mutual aid agreements for Michigan’s natural gas utilities and how to best facilitate development of natural gas transmission contingency planning ( Case No. U-20631 ). The workgroup grew out of recommendations from the MPSC’s Statewide Energy Assessment , the significant effort to make Michigan’s energy systems more secure, reliable and resilient after the 2019 statewide energy emergency in which a fire at a Macomb County compressor station threatened the state’s ability to deliver natural gas during a bitter winter cold snap. Today’s order continues to support the efforts and directs MPSC Staff to file an additional status report on the workgroup’s efforts by Feb. 14, 2025.
MPSC APPROVES UTILITY CONTRACTS SUPPORTING MICHIGAN’S CLEAN ENERGY TRANSITION
The MPSC today approved three projects outlined in Michigan utilities’ long-range integrated resource plans (IRPs) that further the state’s clean energy transition:
- A purchase and sale agreement between Upper Michigan Energy Resources Corp. and Renegade Solar Energy LLC and a planned engineering, procurement and construction agreement between the utility and Invenergy Construction Services LLC ( Case No. U-21081 ). The Renegade Solar Project is a 100-megawatt (MW) solar facility in Delta County selected from three submitted bids, with a lifetime cost of $497.4 million and a levelized cost of energy of $89.67 per megawatt hour (MWh).
- A power purchase agreement (PPA) between Consumers Energy Co. and Tibbits Energy Storage LLC for a 100-MW, 876,000-MWh energy storage facility in Branch County with a lifetime cost of $387 million and a fixed energy payment of $14.54 per MWh ( Case No. U-21090 ).
- PPAs between DTE Electric Co. and Coldwater River Solar LLC and White Pine Grove Solar LLC ( Case No. U-21193 ) for the output, respectively, of the 150-MW Coldwater River Solar Park facility in Branch County, a 30-year contract with a levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of $75 per MWh, and the 100-MW White Pine Grove Solar Park facility in Calhoun County, a 25-year contract with a LCOE of $79 per MWh. The Commission also authorized DTE Electric to earn a financial incentive associated with the PPAs as outlined in the company’s IRP.
COMMISSION GIVES THUMBS UP TO SEMCO ENERGY TARIFF CHANGES
The Commission approved SEMCO Energy Gas Co.’s application to modify its natural gas transportation tariffs to permit pools compromised of a single shipper, and to change its tariff sheets to address a revision to the curtailment Unauthorized Use Charge and a related correction to its Gas Customer Choice Failure Fee ( Case No. U-21469 ). The approval will not increase the cost of service to customers.

What Safari's "Significant Energy" Warning Really Means This warning will appear at the top of a tab, right above the content of a web page. It doesn't mean that the web page has crashed or has become unresponsive, but rather, that the web page is consuming more resources than you might be comfortable with if you're running on battery power. ...
The first thing you can try and do is simply force quit Safari and relaunch it. Occasionally, it'll just be a buggy website that's drawing resources and a force restart could allow the site to reload and behave normally. Click the Apple logo menu in the upper-left corner. Select Force Quit from the dropdown menu.
2. Empty Safari's cache and cookies. Like any other browser, Safari accumulates lots of information about the websites you visit and the information you share. All this is recorded in your cache and cookies, which might become too power-taxing over time. To clean your cache in Safari: Go to Safari > Settings in the menu bar (or use ⌘ + ,).
Tonight, I had closed the Safari app early when I noticed that under the battery icon in the top bar, it still showed Safari "using significant energy" for a few minutes after it had closed. And tested a few minutes later, using only one window open iwht a site that doesn't play videos, and the message was back there.
The message is merely informative. If you prefer not to know that a webpage is using significant energy you can choose to ignore it or use a different browser. A different browser may use even more energy and slow down your Mac leaving you to wonder why, but some people prefer to remain uninformed. The choice is up to you.

Many Safari-users found that when using Safari on a Mac, "This webpage is using significant memory (or energy). Closing it may improve the responsiveness of your Mac" will suddenly pop up. Some users also reported that this message appeared when they tried to use Safari to open Netflix, Facebook, and websites such as CNN, CBS, MSN and so on.
I am currently using a 2017 Mac Pro touch bar that is still on Mojave 10.14.6. My safari is consistently shown using significant energy on my menu. In my activity monitor, I noticed there are many apps running behind my safari despite only opening 4 tabs: mailbox, youtube, google and apple stack exchange.
Just be aware of that - Safari uses least power to render pages and dynamic content. I have plenty of power to spare on my MacPro that I am willing to throw at it to prioritize performance over energy savings. The irony is, that when Safari pops up this message, the webpage actually slows down and becomes laggy.

Sep 10, 2018. #1. Hey folks, I typically have Safari open and running with 3-4 tabs. Nothing crazy.
