The In-Depth Guide to Buying an RTW Ticket

Last Updated: February 7, 2023

A lone commercial airplane flying against the bright blue sky

When it comes to planning an entire trip around the world , travelers have essentially two options: buy flights as you go or plan your route in advance.

Buying as you go gives you flexibility but risks you losing out if a flight is sold out (or overpriced).

Planning in advance requires more work upfront but makes for a more relaxing trip since all your planning is done before you go.

Both options have a place in your travel toolkit, but today, I want to focus on the latter.

Simply put, round-the-world (RTW) tickets are one of the most convenient ways to travel around the world. They make planning your trip simple and straightforward, allowing you to visit the destinations you want to see without having to worry about booking flights along the way.

You just plan your route, book your RTW ticket, and that’s it! They really take the hassle out of planning a complex trip over multiple continents and are a great choice for novice travelers who might not be comfortable improvising a trip on the fly.

And to top it all off, by purchasing your ticket in one bulk RTW package, you can usually save yourself some money too — which is always a plus in my book!

That said, knowing if a RTW ticket is the best way to get around the world really depends on the kind of trip you are taking. Round the world tickets come with many rules and conditions that might not work for you.

In this post, I’ll go over everything you need to know to help you decide if a RTW ticket is the right choice for you and your next globetrotting adventure.

  • Where Can You Book an Around the World Ticket?

Are RTW Tickets Worth Buying?

  • Book Your RTW Ticket

Before we begin, what exactly is an RTW ticket? RTW tickets are actually airline alliance flight passes. An airline alliance is a partnership in which airlines share seats on planes, passengers, and elite status benefits. You buy a ticket from one airline that can be used with them and their partners for one price that lets you travel around the world on that one ticket.

For example, if you book with United Airlines (Star Alliance), your ticket is only good for airlines that United partners within that alliance.

And if you book with American Airlines (which is part of the Oneworld airline alliance), you can only use their partners.

Since American Airlines doesn’t fly everywhere in the world, you’ll need to rely on its partners. Say you need to get from New York City to Nairobi, Kenya (a destination American doesn’t serve). You may technically book your flight with American Airlines for that route, however, you will actually fly one of its airline partners on the sections of the journey that American Airlines doesn’t fly.

It’s important to remember that none of these alliances include the world’s budget airlines such as Ryanair (Europe), Southwest (US), Air Asia (Asia), or Tiger (Asia/Australia). These airlines offer fewer amenities and cheaper fares than the “major” airlines of the world (i.e. large, international carriers that are part of an alliance).

But they also are less comfortable too, which is the trade-off.

RTW tickets can be purchased for seats in economy, business, and first-class. They also come with a number of terms and conditions. Generally speaking, a RTW ticket is valid for one year from the start date and requires you to end in the same country you start in. You don’t need to end in the same city but you need to end in the same country.

Here is a breakdown of the rules for each major airline alliance’s round the world ticket:

The Star Alliance RTW ticket booking homepage

Journeys need to start and end in the same country and go one direction: east or west. You’ll need to cross both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and can only do so once (so no doubling back).

You’ll get up to 16 flights on your ticket and the ability to cover up to 39,000 miles (which is enough to get you to almost every continent). They also provide free rebooking should you need to make any changes once you’re on the road (there are some caveats to that, which you can read int heir terms here .

Using their booking map, you’ll be able to create a 100% unique itinerary based on where you want to go. They also provide several thematic suggestions based on world history, romantic getaways, world wonders, food and wine, and more. Be sure to check them out for ideas and inspiration to get the ball rolling.

You can also have up to 5 “surface” sections in your itinerary. This just means you can travel from one destination to another 5 times outside of your RTW itinerary.

For example, you can fly to London as part of your RTW ticket and then have your onward flight depart from Paris . That will allow you to get to Paris from London via a cheaper flight or train ticket, allowing you to save money.

The distance between “surface” sections is still counted toward your overall 39,000 miles but surface sections can save you money when cheaper budget options are available (or if you’d just prefer to travel overland in certain regions/countries.)

They also have a second RTW ticket option, though it’s not a traditional RTW plan. It’s called Circle Pacific and it lets you travel in a circle around all of the countries that border the Pacific Ocean. So, instead of going around the globe you’ll be looping around the Pacific Ocean, starting and ending in the same destination.

The journey is good for up to 6 months (compared to the 1 year offered by their standard RTW ticket). Some of the most popular countries and regions included in this plan are Australia , New Zealand , Fiji , China , Japan , Southeast Asia , Vanuatu , Hawaii (and the rest of the US), and Canada .

The Oneworld Alliance RTW ticket homepage

Oneworld Explorer is their segment-based pass, which focuses on continents. You can choose plans that offer access to 3, 4, and 6 continents. The more continents you plan to visit, the more expensive your ticket.

The plan also includes up to 16 segments (same as Star Alliance), however, there are no overland penalties. And since it’s continent-based, there’s no maximum mileage limit either. One of the benefits of this option is that every segment is counted the same — whether it’s a two-hour flight or a ten-hour flight — so you can really maximize long-haul flights and cover a lot of ground.

Their Global Explorer plan is the mileage-based pass (similar to the Star Alliance option). It has four options for milage: 26,000, 29,000, 34,000, and 39,000. Those (very roughly) translate to 3, 4, 5, and 6 continents.

The third option is Oneworld’s version of the Circle Pacific, which is effectively the same as the Star Alliance option.

Overall, Oneworld has access to slightly fewer destinations than Star Alliance (1,100 compared to 1,250) but all of the major regions are within reach. Unless you’re looking to get far from the tourist trail and visit obscure destinations, Oneworld will be able to get you to wherever you want to go.

SkyTeam is the third option for RTW tickets. They have a plan similar to Star Alliance’s RTW ticket, however, they offer a rather limited version of it. The carriers and destinations are not nearly as comprehensive as either Star Alliance or Oneworld.

Personally, I wouldn’t even bother looking at their options. Both Star Alliance and Oneworld have much better products.

A map of the world with a camera and passport resting on it

On most RTW tickets, you can change the dates and times your ticket at no extra charge — as long as you don’t change the destinations.

For example, if you have a Tokyo to Los Angeles flight that you want to change, you can change the date and time without a fee. However, if you decide to fly from Tokyo to San Francisco instead then you have to pay a fee (usually around $125 USD).

Where Can You Book a Round the World Ticket?

While you can book RTW tickets directly with the airlines above, you can usually find a better deal by booking through a third party.

Third-party bookers don’t just deal with one alliance — they mix and match from all available airlines (excluding budget airlines) to find the lowest price, which saves you money. Moreover, the overland mileage doesn’t count against your flight because there is no mileage limit.

In short, you’ll want to compare booking direct with booking via a third-party company, though it’s most likely that the third party site will have the better price.

That depends.

RTW tickets are great for people with a set schedule. If you know your travel dates and destinations and don’t plan on changing your trip very much, an RTW ticket will save you a lot of time and a bit of money.

RTW tickets cost a lot, but if you pick one of the popular travel routes, you will find that you will save money in the end. Buying a ticket on a route like this will most likely cost less than if you were to book all your flights separately. You’ll also get more peace of mind since you have a company to help you with any changes you need to make, not to mention the fact that you’ll have everything planned before you leave home so that, once out in the world, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy yourself.

You should buy a RTW ticket if…

  • You’re happy to fly on a set schedule
  • You don’t plan to change your dates a lot
  • You’re buying tickets for a big group like a family
  • You don’t like budget airlines
  • You’re visiting a lot of far-flung destinations and taking lots of long-haul flights
  • You’re already a frequent flier and are looking to gain perks

If you are any of the above, a round the world ticket will probably save you at least 15-25% off the price of point-to-point tickets.

You should NOT buy a RTW ticket if…

  • You want to fly a lot of budget airlines
  • You don’t care about points or miles
  • You have not set plan
  • You’ll be gone longer than a year

If your trip matches any of these points, booking on your own, using budget carriers, and waiting for deals is going to work out a lot cheaper than buying a RTW ticket.

However, there is no definitive answer as to whether or not you should buy one of these tickets. It really depends a lot on your specific trip. A lot of people swear by around-the-world tickets and I believe that for the right trip, these tickets can be PERFECT.

You just have to figure out if your trip is the right trip for this kind of ticket.

To do that, use the interactive booking tools on the booking sites above. They all have websites where you can plan your route and get price estimates. That’s going to be the best way to compare prices and figure out which option is best for you.

Flying Business Class Around The World

Imagine a long-haul flight in an environment more comfortable than your living room.

“After flying a few transcontinental legs in Emirates business class, I understand why many flyers are opting for the luxury route.”

What used to be unapproachable for the majority of flyers is becoming a little more accessible: you can fly business class around the world much easier than you think !

I just got back from a work trip flying all the way around the world: 18 flights in 40 days .

Thanks to David, airfare routing guru at AirTreks, I was able to spring for a few amazing business class stretches on Emirates. I’d flown business and even first class a few times before, usually using frequent flyer upgrades, but this experience was beyond them all. I was on a strict budget for my RTW, so there wasn’t really room for lavish accommodations and needless luxuries. But I stayed at a few really decent places, especially in Cambodia and Bali where prices are low. I took a business class overnight from Barcelona to Dubai, and an overnight from Dubai to Singapore. These flights were literally more luxurious than 95% of the hotels I stayed at for the entire six weeks. There are a few airlines, like Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, and Qantas, which are especially renowned for their service.

My flight from Barcelona to Dubai in business class

business_class_meal

In some airline routes, business class has actually replaced first class. But that doesn’t mean it’s less nice: on the contrary, business class gets nicer and nicer with each new model of airliner being built. The business class seat on my first Emirates flight (on a brand new Airbus A380) was a plush recliner surrounded by things like walnut trim, my personal minibar stocked with juice and water, an iPad, and a huge flat screen monitor.

Seconds after I boarded, my flight attendant came up and said: “Mr. Gildner, I’m Cynthia. Would you like some champagne?” Of course I did, so she offered me a flute of dry champagne on a silver platter. I’ve seen this stuff in movies, but it’s quite nice when the flight attendant literally already knows your surname and offers you champagne. She came back with a selection of drinks (I chose a Johnny Walker Blue, straight up) before we even pushed back from the gate. Dinner was served immediately after we lifted off, but it wasn’t the microwaved tinfoil box with a dry chicken breast inside (a thing about long-haul air cuisine that I’ve come to love). This was a five-course experiment in hedonism, accompanied by silverware and fine china. I had potato leek soup, a lamb steak, grilled vegetables, a chocolate truffle dish for dessert, and maybe a glass of pinot noir. Or two. Who’s counting? It was getting a little late, and at this point Cynthia gave me my personal hygiene bag. Not the tiny ones that hotels give you with a half-toothbrush and an ounce of shampoo: this was a full-sized zip-up hygiene bag with a hairbrush, skin lotion, eyeshade, socks, slippers, earplugs, toothpaste, toothbrush, a tiny thing of cologne, and face wipes. I literally don’t have most of that stuff at home . Before bed, the flight attendant came up to me and said “Mr. Gildner, would you like a mattress?” Of course I said yes, and she proceeded to stretch a padded duvet over my reclined seat and gave me a real pillow (I put the plastic bag the pillow was packaged in on the floor…more on this later). I proceeded to sink into a deep sleep and was more comfortable than I’d been in any beds the previous 3 weeks on the road. I woke up some hours later to find the flight attendant serving me breakfast… a full breakfast. And then: disaster strikes.

See, in my previous destination I’d eaten some bad food, and the symptoms were following me. I thought my bout of traveller’s sickness was over, but it decided to come back with a vengeance about three hours before we landed in Dubai . On one hand, I’m sad that I was so violently ill during the most luxurious flight of my life: on the other hand, can you imagine breaking out in sweat, cramping, and feeling nauseous back in economy, stuck in between two strangers? I’m so glad I was able to suffer in luxury. Everything stayed under control until it was time to disembark. But as soon as I stood up, my body decided it was time. I rushed back to my seat, squeezing past a few Saudi oil millionaires, and grabbed the pillowcase bag just in time. I spent the next fifteen minutes surrounded by flight attendants offering me everything from medicine, water, and hot towels.

How much does business class cost?

Business class is a premium experience, but it doesn’t always have to cost as much as you think. All of the negative associations of long flights are essentially removed: there’s plenty of room in all directions, good food, and nice bathrooms. Although each flight’s cost will depend upon other factors like seasonality, length, and day of the week, a general rule of thumb is that business class tickets will cost three to four times the cost of an economy seat. Many flight experts suggest saving your airline miles for seat upgrades. I’ve used American Airlines 500-mile upgrades several times for this express purpose. In my opinion it’s almost a waste to either pay more or use miles for short regional flights (an hour is an hour, and I don’t really mind where I sit) but for overnight red-eye flights it’s definitely worth it. It’s also worth exploring ways to maximize your trip: like using stopovers in airline hub cities, or adding extra cities for a multi-city trip .

How do I book business class flights?

You can book a business class flight using any of the traditional methods for regular flights: online, directly with the airlines, or by calling your Travel Planner.

Before you book, check your route on TripPlanner to get a quick estimate of what a flight would cost. On average, a business class flight will be 3-4x what a seat back in economy would cost. It’s also worth talking to an airfare agent for an inside track on extending your business class upgrade across your entire round-the-world trip. In some cases, I’ve heard of routes in which business class can actually be cheaper than premium economy seats. This is rare, but it’s worth a call to a travel consultant to check out your options for flying in business class around the world during your next trip.

Top 5 airlines flying to Worldwide

Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.

Service was good for such a short flight. Small plane but smooth flight.

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

public website still broken for years randomly blocking browsers with privacy options active after loading a page maybe once. check-in on laptop was almost impossible but eventually randomly worked. had to print pass at airport since couldn't get back in to load digital pass on mobile firefox or chrome. red eye flight so smooth onboarding, plenty of room to spread out, easy offboarding. onboard wifi instructions mention vpn can cause problems connecting but fails to also mention private dns. no printed or built in menu list, seems weird to require personal device to point at qr code link for menu which does not even allow direct ordering. people with health condition risk related dietary restrictions trying to avoid for example cholesterol and sugar are left guessing what they can order either way without nutritional info highlights (cranberry juice was minute maid cocktail with as much suger as typical can of soda). tap to pay wasn't working and always seems sketchy to manually enter card info. good movie variety, so limited tv was okay.

The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise. Thank you Delta.

Gate crew helping to scan tickets was a little short tempered with customers. Flight crew was very friendly, welcoming , and provided excellent service on board.

Bathroom broke, had to rush to board because of late exit of previous flight

Everything went well with the flight. But one of the flight attendants had on inappropriate pants. She had on an old worn out pair of sweat pants. The back seam was unrivaled and should not have been worn for work. If I had not seen her in the airport with the standard type of luggage, I certainly would not have thought she was working for Delta. Not a good look at all for representation.

Great!! I haven’t had a bad experience with them.

This leg was better than the previous leg mostly because I upgraded my searing and the crew was nicer

I like that we took off on time and arrived a bit early. I like that I could gate check my bag and board early. I don't like how crowded the flight was. I had ok leg room, but could feel every move of the person next to me. And the aisles are very narrow. The gate and flight crews were terrific.

I was not given a seat when I bought the ticket. I know airlines are trying to squeeze every penny out ot the customer, but we are buying a seat on the airplane, right? I find this irritating with all airlines, but especially Alaska because I fly it so often. No sense of customer use and loyalty.

I’m a first time mom and traveled with my 18mo old boy and it was not a great experience with the flight attendants. They were not friendly or helpful at all. It’s hard enough traveling with a toddler and have people be rude and unkind does not help.

The cabin stewart took care of my garment bag and then made sure I did not forget it on my way out. The stewardess gave me water after I missed the earlier service (I was asleep). I received good service overall.

Both flights from NYC to SFO were delayed more than an hour. No wifi, no screens/movies etc. The crew was nice.

only refreshments and biscuits available but it was a short flight from LAX to LAS thus it was fine.

Temperature was very cold. seat was uncomfortable bc headrest did not work properly - the earflaps would not move.

High travel time and the flight was full but the staff handled it all well.

Alaska airlines was good! Friendly staff, good communication and respectful. The alaska airlines help in everyway they can

Some entertainment and food/snack service would have been nice

All the pessengers should be wait in a line útil the creo and piloto are arrived.

Planes seat could be bigger very uncomfortable for tall humans.

1 hour waiting for suitcases to come out traveling in business class and food in business class is a sandwich? Avoid Aeromexico .

Newer plane with large seats. No meal, but snacks were plentiful. Inflight entertainment was good but movies were dated.

No space reserved for anyone who didn’t have underseat in front of them. Made it inconvenient to get the backs secured. No inflight entertainment in the 190. Bring your own! Food was excellent and we were surprised to get a full breakfast.

Terrible. Flight was cancelled due to the weather in the east and sout east(florida). Did not get any compesation of any kind. According to them, it was not under their control so I lost all the money paid for the 2 fairs from Raleigh, NC to Orlando, Fl.

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

Nothing. Jet Blue is a great choice for me And I’m going to miss flying with them Since I travel to Lima Peru very often 😞😞😞

40 minute delay before take off after boarding flight. Bright lights throughout night flight due Issues with light panels. In flight Entertainment nonfunctional

Another horrible Jet Blue experience. This airline has suffered the biggest decline of all from best to worst. TVs didn’t work (again). internet was temperamental. Boarded late and couldn’t get organized to serve snacks.

I hate their constant delays! It’s as if I cannot confidently make plans for timing when I'm traveling with them. I slept through it, so all I can say is it was good.

There was no wheelchair or wheelchair escort at the gate..unacceptable

Did not wait long for wheelchair and attendant to arrive after checking in. Wheeled down to plane Was greeted with a smile when entering the plane Choice of snacks was very limited to 2 items. Seats are uncomfortable. My butt was sore after the 1st hour of flying. Needs better cushioning at seats.

Did not wait long for wheelchair and attendant to arrive after checking in. Wheeled down to plane Was greeted with a smile when entering the plane Choice of snacks was very limited to 2 items.

One hour delayed departure resulted in problems with planned ground transportation at my destination.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Nice flight, nice crew but no cookie or napkin with my seltzer.

I liked everything about the flight. The service was excellent!

The flight was canceled. Got rebooked to Chicago and when we arrived our luggage where to there. They were going to our original destination the day after. They would not deliver them to our house. We had to go pick them up.

Delayed a day due to snow storm. Was upgraded. That kind of made up for significant delays from FLL to COS with no compensation or acknowledgement.

EWR terminal C United Club is great. Flight and everything else mediocre

737 Max was leaking water into the cabin through the windows. Overhead bins opened on landing. Bad bad plane.

Very bad , airplain had problem with engines , had to evacuate, had a delay on my trip for almost 4 hours , lost my rental car in london..

Other than the two hour delay, it was fine. Of course they were very professional and kept us informed throughout the whole delay..

Easy boarding in group 2. Landed 1/2 hr early. Delicious cookie snack.

This Business Class-only Airline Just Debuted a 22-day Trip Around the World

Like an around-the-world cruise, except on a stunning aircraft with lie-flat beds.

business class world tour

Going on an around-the-world cruise is, irrefutably, one of the ultimate luxury travel goals. Discovering far-flung countries, communities, and cultures during a single trip is an exhilarating adventure, albeit one that typically takes months to complete. So, if you've always dreamed of going around the world but don't necessarily have half-a-year's worth of vacation days to spare (or get seasick easily), consider La Compagnie 's new Air Cruise.

The French airline teamed up with Safrans du Monde , a luxury travel agency, to offer an all-inclusive (and ultra-exclusive) world tour with a bespoke itinerary of must-visit destinations, guided tours, and stays in the best hotels around the world.

The Air Cruise launches in Paris where guests will board La Compagnie's A321neo plane, which features only 76 sleeper seats. Ultra-soft mattress toppers, free in-flight Wi-Fi, and gourmet chef-prepared meals paired with the finest wines and Champagne are some of the high-end onboard amenities that will make this trip unforgettable.

The first stop of your world journey will be bustling Mexico City. From there, you'll head further west to Hawaii and then south to Fiji. Up next, you'll sail in the fjords of the Southern Alps in New Zealand and discover the picturesque city of Hobart in Tasmania. Then, your private jet will take you to Perth to experience all that this beautiful Australian city has to offer. Relax in the turquoise waters of the Maldives before you fly to Rwanda for a memorable gorilla trek.

The itinerary is optimized such that, on travel days, you'll spend only a few hours in the air giving you plenty of time to explore each destination. And of course, since you'll fly private, lengthy layovers or overcrowded planes become a thing of the past.

You can choose between two packages — Club Safrans (rates start at $53,000), which includes all of your lodging at five-star hotels, and Premiere Safrans (rates start at 83,000), which also offers exclusive excursions at each destination — and add a three-night stay in Paris to your itinerary for an additional fee. The tour leaves on Nov. 5, 2022 and ends on Nov. 26, and you can book the experience here .

ROUND THE WORLD

A Round the world ticket is the dream of every traveller. How else could you get a taste of every corner of the globe? Thanks to a growing number of airline alliances you can now fly practically anywhere in the luxury of Business Class for even less. Round the world Business Class tickets are the ultimate way to see the world.

But if you’re looking to maintain some brand loyalty or fly in a little more luxury, airlines such as Etihad Airways , Singapore Airlines and Qantas all offer round the world Business Class itineraries from around the 10k mark.

However, with all airlines, the “from" price is only an indicator. Depending on where you are flying into and out of, when you’re flying, whether there any specials available and also if you are planning to move between some of the journey legs by land will all affect the price of your itinerary and it’s worthwhile keeping this in mind when formulating your round the world trip.

It’s a complicated and time-consuming process trying to figure out your own round the-world Business Class itinerary and to get the best deal you need and in-depth knowledge and years of experience to find your perfect ticket.

The Complete Guide to KLM Business Class

Summer Rylander

Summer Rylander

July 30, 2023

As one of just seven airlines to receive an APEX World Class Award for 2022, KLM’s commitment to excellence in safety, service, and sustainability has been rightfully acknowledged by industry professionals. For passengers, though, there’s no better way to experience the scope of KLM performance than to fly business class.

Long-haul flights are where KLM’s business class service really shines. On board, travelers can look forward to lie-flat seats, excellent meals created by top Dutch chefs, a generous drink selection, and a signature Delft Blue house —arguably the best souvenir of the skies.

What to know about KLM business class

KLM has two business class designations: Europe Business Class and World Business Class. As the names suggest, Europe Business is what you’ll find on flights operating within Europe—usually aboard a KLM Cityhopper flight serviced with Embraer aircraft—while World Business is offered on longer-haul, intercontinental flights.

Regardless of your status with KLM/Air France’s Flying Blue loyalty program, a business class ticket includes SkyPriority privileges that grant access to priority lanes at check-in, security, and boarding. You’ll also, of course, enjoy lounge access.

Examples of business class deals we've found on KLM

  • $2,490 roundtrip to Istanbul
  • $2,111 roundtrip to Dubai
  • $1,726 roundtrip to Kenya

The KLM business class experience at the airport

The klm business class lounge.

While no two lounges are identical, you can generally expect comfortable seating, plentiful power outlets, work stations, a selection of hot and cold buffet items, and complimentary alcohol—sometimes self-serve, sometimes poured by bartenders. Some lounges have a selection of top-shelf spirits or custom cocktails that may carry an additional charge.

KLM Crown Lounges are—no surprise—KLM’s own lounges. They are consistently clean, well-staffed, and offer very good food and beverages. I enjoy these lounges so much that I sometimes intentionally book flights with a longer transfer time so that I can hang out in a Crown Lounge before continuing on my way.

Two KLM Crown Lounges can be found at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS): the Schengen Crown Lounge located at concourse D, and the Non-Schengen Crown Lounge located between E and F concourses.

The Schengen lounge has both a hot and cold buffet, self-serve alcohol, and available showers. The non-Schengen lounge—which spans two floors and is accessed via an ascending elevator along a mirrored wall dotted with Delft Blue KLM houses—also has hot and cold buffets, though alcohol is poured behind bars (there is one on each floor). Premium drinks are further available for purchase. In addition to showers, a sleep cabin can be booked with a fee.

Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) and Houston’s George Bush Airport (IAH) also offer KLM Crown Lounges—in Terminal 3 opposite gate C32, and in Terminal D near gate D8, respectively.

In the absence of a Crown Lounge, KLM business class passengers can enjoy access to SkyTeam member lounges, or a designated third-party lounge as is often found in smaller airports.

KLM business class check-in

As with other SkyTeam airlines, KLM’s check-in and boarding process grants first access to SkyPriority passengers. KLM business class passengers can proceed to the priority check-in lane, and then make use of the fast-track lane at security if one is available. Business class and SkyPriority passengers are invited to board the aircraft first, or shortly following those who may need additional assistance.

Baggage allowance

KLM business class passengers may bring two pieces of checked baggage, each weighing up to 70 pounds (32 kilos). Flying Blue members with Silver, Gold, or Platinum status can check one additional bag for a total of three. Business class and SkyPriority checked bags are tagged with a priority label for faster retrieval.

In the cabin, business class passengers are permitted two pieces of hand luggage and one personal item. Regulations state that carry-on baggage cannot exceed a combined weight of 40 pounds (18 kilos), but I’ve never known KLM to weigh these items.

The KLM business class experience in the air

Seats in klm business class.

KLM Europe Business and World Business cabins differ depending on the route and aircraft.

KLM Europe Business Class

Standard perks of Europe Business seating include up to three inches (7.5 centimeters) of additional legroom, and always having a window or aisle seat (the middle seat remains empty in business class, if there is one). These seats do not lie flat. Instead, they are similar to economy seats but with more legroom.

  • Boeing 737-700: It’s Europe Business Class aboard the 737-700, so you’ll find a 3-3 layout with a blocked middle seat and no lie-flats. There are 20 business class seats on this aircraft.
  • ‍ Boeing 737-800: The 737-800 again has a 3-3 layout with a blocked middle seat and no lie-flat seats. The seat pitch in Europe Business aboard this aircraft is the same as that found in Economy Comfort, so the number of seats allocated to business class may vary. ‍
  • Boeing 737-900: The 737-900 Europe Business Class cabin is like that of the 737-800: a 3-3 layout, blocked middle seat, no lie-flats, and a potentially varying number of business class seats. ‍
  • Embraer 175: KLM’s short-haul workhorses known as Cityhoppers, the Embraer 175 maintains a 2-2 layout throughout the entire aircraft, has no lie-flat seats, and business class seat allocation may vary (or not exist at all). ‍
  • Embraer 190: Another Cityhopper aircraft, these models also have a 2-2 layout, no lie-flats, and variable business class seating. ‍
  • Embraer 195-E2: As KLM’s newest addition to their Cityhopper lineup, the Embraer 195-E2 is the most sustainable of the three and, honestly, the cabin is pretty slick. The 2-2 layout remains and business class seating allocation may vary, but every seat has a power supply and a lingering hint of that new-plane smell.

KLM World Business Class

KLM business class.

As mentioned earlier, World Business is really where the concept of “business class” comes to life. World Business cabins feature full-flat seats with an accommodating length of 81 inches (206 centimeters) and a width of 20 inches (51 centimeters), a 16- to 18-inch entertainment system with noise-reducing headphones, in-seat storage space, and certainly a window or aisle seat.

  • Airbus A330-200: World Business Class seating aboard the A330-200 is in a 2-2-2 layout with 18 lie-flat seats.  ‍
  • Airbus A330-300: This aircraft also has a 2-2-2 layout in the World Business Class cabin, though the A330-300 offers 30 lie-flat seats. ‍
  • Boeing 777-200ER: This spacious aircraft’s World Business cabin adheres to KLM’s favored 2-2-2 layout, with 34 lie-flat seats. ‍
  • Boeing 777-300ER: Though this plane is longer than the 777-200ER, business class remains the same: a 2-2-2 layout with 34 lie-flats. ‍
  • Boeing 787-9: More widely known as the Dreamliner, KLM shakes up this World Business cabin layout with a 1-2-1 arrangement, offering 30 lie-flat seats.
  • Boeing 787-10: An extended version of the above, this Dreamliner follows the 1-2-1 business class layout but bumps the lie-flat seat count up to 38.

Benefits of flying KLM business class

Entertainment and wifi.

In KLM World Business Class cabins, every seat has a power supply and a 16- to 18-inch entertainment system. WiFi access is increasingly available on intercontinental flights, but this depends on the route and the particular aircraft. When WiFi is an option, you’ll have a free hour of messaging—think WhatsApp, WeChat, Messenger, and so on—and can choose from either a Surf or Streaming package thereafter. WiFi access throughout the duration of the flight with the Surf packages costs 18 euros; to step up to the Streaming package is 30 euros.

KLM business class amenity kit.

When flying KLM World Business, you’ll find an amenity kit waiting at your seat—and it's a rather nice takeaway. The bags—attractive enough to be repurposed—are thoughtfully designed by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau, and inside you’ll find items like a pair of socks, toothbrush and toothpaste, as well as special edition lip balm and hand cream by Rituals.

Toward the end of the flight, cabin attendants will pass through the World Business cabin with a tray of Delft Blue houses. These miniature houses—which are filled with Dutch gin, by the way—are modeled after actual Dutch buildings and have been part of KLM’s signature experience since the 1950s. There are 102 different houses, and enthusiasts (myself included) keep track of their collection through the KLM Houses app, available through Google Play or the App Store .

Meals in KLM business class

meal in KLM business class.

When flying KLM Europe Business Class under two hours, you’ll receive a light meal—a main course salad or a fresh sandwich, perhaps—and standard choice of refreshments. On longer flights in Europe Business, a three-course meal will usually be served. This includes a starter, a choice of warm main course, and a dessert. Business class passengers are welcome to ask for additional drinks at any time.

Aboard KLM World Business Class, you can expect a welcome glass of Champagne, a variety of snacks throughout the flight, regular drink service, and a proper menu—which is refreshed every three months—for mealtimes. Dinners are designed by renowned Dutch chefs and typically include your choice of starter, main course, and dessert. At the time of this writing, the menu by Jonnie Boer, chef of the three Michelin-starred restaurant De Librije, offers an apple, potato, and asparagus tartelette, chicken thigh in star anise sauce, or a vegetarian stew with braised onion and tomato compote—among other options.

Breakfast is also served on flights with a morning arrival, and there’s usually a choice between savory and sweet. All drinks and meals are served with actual glasses and servingware, using exclusive pieces by Dutch designer Marcel Wanders.

KLM deploys the expertise of a sommelier to create an interesting selection of wines that are available throughout flight service. (I once had a lovely Dutch Rivaner from De Kleine Schorre that I still think about two-and-a-half years later.) Beer—Heineken—is also an option, as well as a variety of spirits and liqueurs.

KLM business class vs first class

KLM does not offer a first class cabin. KLM World Business Class aboard an intercontinental flight is the highest class you’ll find with this airline.

How to book KLM business class

How much does it cost for a business class ticket on klm .

Business class tickets aboard KLM are usually several times the price of economy class tickets. Pricing between $500 and $1500 is not an uncommon range for tickets in KLM Europe Business Class.

For a transatlantic flight in KLM World Business Class, prices may range from $3,000 to over $7,000. However, Going found our Elite members flight for up to $2,000 less.

How to upgrade to business class on KLM for free

Your best chance for a business class upgrade aboard KLM is to be an elite member of their Flying Blue loyalty program—but even then, don’t count on it for World Business. As a Flying Blue Gold member, I have occasionally been bumped to business class, but this has only ever happened on short-haul Cityhopper flights.

A more viable option for a “free” business class upgrade is to collect miles via Flying Blue and later redeem them for an upgrade after you’ve booked an economy class ticket.

How much does it cost to upgrade to business class on KLM?

If you have booked an economy class ticket and wish to pay to upgrade to business class, this is usually an option as long as seats are still available. You’ll pay the fare difference, which varies widely, so do keep an eye on business class fares after booking an economy ticket if this is your game plan.

Alternatively, you can check the price of a last-minute business class upgrade during check-in. If an upgrade is available, you’ll see it as an option when checking in either via the KLM app or website. Again, prices vary, but there’s usually an option to pay with a combination of miles and cash.

How many miles to upgrade to KLM business class?

The amount of miles necessary to upgrade to business class will also vary depending on route and availability. For reference, my one-way upgrade to KLM World Business Class on a flight between Amsterdam and Zanzibar in late December cost me 37,800 miles.

KLM’s business class product is most worth the price—whether paid in cash, miles, or a combination thereof—when it’s aboard an intercontinental flight. KLM World Business Class is a true business class experience with lie-flat seats, upscale dining, attentive service, and priority privileges.

Passengers connecting through Amsterdam will enjoy KLM Crown Lounge access with hot and cold buffet, a full bar, workstations, comfortable seating, and available showers.

I toured Qatar Airways' luxurious Airbus A350 complete with the 'world's best business class' and was impressed by its comfort and attention to detail

  • Insider toured Qatar Airways' Airbus A350 at the Paris Air Show.
  • The huge plane has 46 business class Qsuites, including a unique Quad configuration.
  • And the 281 economy seats are still comfortable too, with plenty of leg room.

At the Paris Air Show in mid-June, Insider got a tour of Qatar Airways' Airbus A350.

business class world tour

Walking up to the plane from the tarmac instead of a usual jet bridge showed just how big the A350 is.

business class world tour

This was my first air show, and it was a great experience to go through the whole plane and learn more about all the effort and details put into it.

business class world tour

Qatar and Airbus nearly fell out over disagreements about the exterior paint peeling, with the airline trying to sue the manufacturer for $600 million ...

business class world tour

Airbus has changed the design of its A350 flagship jet amid its dispute with Qatar Airways over peeling paint

.... but that has been put to rest now, after the two companies reached an undisclosed settlement in February.

business class world tour

Although slightly shorter than Boeing's upcoming 777-9, the huge size of Airbus' wide-body jet was apparent when climbing the stairs and getting a great view of the Paris Air Show.

business class world tour

The tour began in Qatar's business class with its signature purple mood lighting.

business class world tour

The day before my tour, the World Airline Awards named Qatar Airways' business offering as the world's best business class.

business class world tour

Every seat — called a Qsuite — comes with its own closing door, and a neat embossed sign for the number.

business class world tour

And while the A350's tail cam isn't the greatest resolution, it was a fascinating view that I had never seen before.

business class world tour

And there was plenty of room to stretch out and enjoy a luxurious flight.

business class world tour

I spent $14,000 to fly Qatar Airways' Qsuites business class and saw why it's called the 'best in the world'

I was most impressed by the central seats, which can also be turned into a double bed.

business class world tour

Some of these seats can be opened up by the crew to create "The Quad" — a configuration unique to Qatar Airways, and ideal for families.

business class world tour

In between the sections, I caught sight of the galley where flight attendants prepare meals for passengers.

business class world tour

And plenty of storage to keep pre-packaged meals or drinks.

business class world tour

I spent a day learning how to be a flight attendant for British Airways' first-class cabin.

Next up we visited the economy class which was laid out in the standard 9-abreast — although some airlines have managed to fit 10 seats in a row on the A350.

business class world tour

Airbus debuts new A350 cabin that seats 10 people a row to compete with Boeing's new flagship 777X — look inside

There's a total of 281 seats in the economy class, the Airbus spokesman said.

business class world tour

And all the seats were laid out with an extra cushion and a blanket.

business class world tour

Maybe it was just because I needed a rest after walking miles around the air show, but I found the economy seats to be pretty comfortable too.

business class world tour

It obviously isn't going to be quite as elegant as a Qsuite, but I found there was still a good amount of leg room as someone who's 5-foot-9.

business class world tour

And then there's plenty more leg room in the exit row, where the screens are attached to the seats.

business class world tour

There was a much bigger galley and two jump seats in the rear of the plane.

business class world tour

And I got to look inside the hidden compartment where flight attendants can sleep on long-haul flights.

business class world tour

See inside the secret, minuscule aircraft compartment where flight attendants sleep on long-haul flights

Then we saw the cockpit area, where this ornate logo showed more of the attention to detail that Qatar put into the plane.

business class world tour

And there was this display where the crew can check the status of lights, temperature, doors, and smoke detectors.

business class world tour

As the tour was ending, we got a brief moment to glimpse inside the cockpit and say hi to a couple of Qatar Airways pilots.

a row of seats on an airplane

British Airways is now officially in the game…

Boarding an Airbus A350 is unlike any other flying experience. You immediately notice the high ceilings, whisper quiet cabin and the beautiful, extra large windows, but for British Airways business class customers who didn’t quite know what they were booking onto, they’ll also notice yet another stark difference, and rather quickly too – a remarkably modern and refined new business class cabin.

A lovely sight. @British_Airways future and past in one frame. #avgeek #ba100 #A350 pic.twitter.com/gwugTU7ky6 — Gilbert Ott | GSTP ✈️🌴🌏 (@godsavethepoint) August 5, 2019

Gone are the old seats and in are new business class “club suites”, complete with a privacy door to tune out the world, or at least your seat mates choice in entertainment. I was on board the first ever commercial flight, and put the new British Airways Club Suite seat through its paces. My verdict : it’s a sensational way to fly, but like many iconically British things, not without its quirks…

The British Airways A350 Club Suite Cabin

The British Airways A350 splits business class into two cabins, divided by a crew galley and a “club kitchen”, where guests can grab snacks in between meal services. As noted in our “best seats in every BA A350 cabin” look at the aircraft, Seats in rows 1, 11 and 15 would absolutely be my pick for business class, thanks to increased privacy, legroom, space or proximity to the exit door.

a device with a screen and sunglasses in it

Upright: the seat enjoys an absolutely fantastic “upright angle”, with a really comfortable slouch position and excellent lumbar support. As I write this, I’m happily enjoying this seating position without feeling like i’m standing against a brick wall.

a chair with a desk and a laptop on it

But bed mode was a bit of a mystery, albeit a very comfortable one depending on how you sleep.

I’ll start with the bad.

a bed in a plane

As far as the good goes though, there’s plenty.

Laying flat out in coffin mode, my 6’3’’ wide frame had at least a couple inches to spare in length, which is more rare than one might guess in business class, due to the fact that most seats are only 6’0” in length.

a bed and pillows in a plane

For side sleepers who curl their legs up a bit, the seat is very good and offers better padding than say… 20/25 of the best business class seats. If there was more room created where the immovable arm rest is located, it’d be nearer a perfect score.

The BA A350 Privacy Door, And How It Is In Reality

This is not the tallest privacy door on an airplane, but a darn effective one it is. In upright mode, I could see over the seat, but could not see shorter passengers, and could only see the head tops of those in front of me. Once reclined, even slightly – everyone disappeared.

a desk and computer in an airplane

BA A350 Club Suite In Flight Entertainment System

As to the new Club Suite screen, which comes in at 18.5’’ in full HD quality, it’s superb. It’s genuinely fast, very responsive to hand touch and gestures and is easily the most intuitive and easy to use IFE system British Airways has ever offered. It was little touches like instructions on how to login to the wifi that made an actual difference.

As to the actual films, television and docs, I’ve long considered British Airways to have one of the better selections of film and television, with a steady mix of new hits and classic bits, and I’m glad to see that this has not changed at all.

With a window seat featuring the A350’s extra large windows, which happened to be very clean on this maiden flight, it was just a question of which entertainment to pick between the sky and the IFE. They just don’t make movies like they used to, but that’s hardly British Airways fault.

BA A350 Lavatories, Sounds And Other Bits

The best lavatory in British Airways A350 Club World cabin is definitely the one found in the front cabin, in front of row 1, and not just because you feel as if you’re practically in the flight deck. This is an ADA compatible lavatory with enough space to comfortably turn around. All the lavatories are nice, but this one is the best.

Aside from a cabin which propels British Airways to an extremely competitive top tier business class offering,   it’s the plane itself which makes this a sensational way to fly. This plane is so whisper quiet, you just cannot help but love it. Colleagues can chat at a whisper without disturbing other passengers and engines are more of an idea than a constant state of sonic fixture. Thanks to the well documented anti jet-lag measures on the plane, passengers on long haul flights will really feel the difference. I do.

The tray table is also a nice touch. It’s positioned high enough and adjustable enough that you can comfortably slide in and out of your seat during meal service, without pulling the table cloth and thus knocking your entire meal into your perfectly pressed outfit. It’s the little things, and this was done well.

Overall Scoring And Thoughts On British Airways A350 Club Suite

Overall, I am really excited by this new business class experience from British Airways. If I could’ve made the privacy door 6” higher, I would’ve. If I could’ve prioritised more bed width over arm rest and tray space, I might have. But those are entirely first world problems, and I really can’t help but feel grateful at 40,000 feet in the sky, in a flat bed long enough for anyone not playing in the NBA, with a privacy door to shut the world out. I give this a 9/10.

Before you go, here’s a round up of the destinations where you’ll find the new Club Suite.

On balance, how does this compare with ANA’s The Room, besides the seat in bed mode being maybe not as long

The “room” from ANA I’d now rate as the very best. It’s superior to this seat for sure in terms of hard product, but this is in the top 10 conversation, which I’m glad for BA for having achieved. Basically, I’d fly both, but on a direct LHR-HND, I’d be in the room, though I do prefer A350>777.

Thanks for the brilliant review !

Hmm… I am side sleeper and always on the left. I think the immovable armrest means that I could only sleep on one side of the cabin. This is pretty annoying for us non-status passengers who can’t and won’t pay for seat selection.

This breathlessly over-positive review really feels like you’re blinded by the freebies and being extended the invitation to give a proper review.

I have no idea how you can discern 100 different values of review for privacy or storage space giving you’ve given scores out of 100, especially comparing between airlines.

It’s a decent product for a second-tier airline but (all except this privacy screen) barely catching up over what will be a slow roll-out to what other airlines are 3-5 years ahead in. I’d much rather fly American, Singapore, Qatar, Delta or hell even United’s new seat to NYC than BA.

The fact a small piece of plastic to hold your water bottle is worth mentioning by the CEO of a global airline is a reflection on how horrendous the current seat is, not how revolutionary the new seat is.

Business Traveller has a much more balanced review, you’d do well to have a read and make your journalism more well-rounded.

James, have you flown the seat? No. Then decide for yourself. I stand by every word.

And for the record, I spend at least $40,000 on airline ticket every year to avoid “freebies” from any airline, but thanks for going there.

Sorry James not be rude, but what you said here was trash. How you can give Bad feedback on what you haven’t flown is funny. everyone who has flown the seat is says it’s a fantastic product. (GSTP has said yes it’s not the best, but it’s one of the best and his given his honest review, including what he doesn’t like) just shows you have nothing sensible to say here. Sorry though. And you say oh catching up (except the door) what do you mean except the door?! How many airlines have a door? Is it the American or the united? The fact you had to take out the door so you could prove a non existent point is funny. Sorry maybe BA hurt you previously in the past but please, this seat is fantastic. Stop being salty

Thanks Gilbert for your informative review and the best photos of the new club suite I’ve seen so far. They give a really good sense of what to expect, how much space there is and how the suite looks from all angles. Can’t wait to try it now

Thanks for the kind words Stuart, very kind of you. Hope you enjoy!

…and less than 48hrs later, YET AGAIN British Airways inflict misery on tens of thousands of customers, disrupting and cancelling their journeys and unable to offer effective support because of the scale of the issue and the cuts to staff and systems that have happened in the recent past… So passengers are left stranded with no information or help in many cases as a direct result of hollowing out the organization and refusing to genuinely invest in the customer by having working IT. As opposed to the essential fleet renewal which is being spun as for the customer (who does benefit but since BA *have* to replace some of their airframes for economic and safety reasons it’s not a decision). Their estimated IT spend is £170m a year, their profits £2,000,000,000 yes that’s billion. It could be fixed but it’s more profitable to pay out £8m to £10m twice a year when things go wrong so after 4 consecutive years of multiple IT failures they still haven’t fixed it. That is a good indication of the disdain the current board have for the customer and delivering the service they sell.

What a contrast with uncle Alex… Recent trip to Athens with Aegian and they were able to provide a comfortable seat, a decent meal and drink in a clean cabin all for about £10 more than the surcharges on a BA avios redemption flight (or about 65% the cash price BA wanted). THIS is why people #flyabba

My wife and I had a very enjoyable flight to Madrid in the A350 new Club World Suite. It is obviously a great and long overdue improvement. We have been extremely critical of BA’s Yin-Yang seats and previously went out of our way to avoid flying BA Club World; unless we had to for convenience (e.g. non-stop route)!

Minor criticisms/suggestions. 1) On one/both lids covering the small storage bins it would have been useful to have a small dimple to reduce the risk of a glass/cup sliding.

2) A female perspective was that they might prefer just 1 deeper storage bin (instead of 2 small ones) where they could deposit a small handbag (out of sight/out of mind). Maybe not as big as the Emirates trough though.

The cloth seats are comfortable and presumably appeal to people who do not approve of leather but how well they last and stay clean remains to be seen.

We will see what other BA routes get the benefit of the A350 after the initial few because if Virgin fly the same route for a similar price then they will get my business for now.

Am confused about where the main galley is – as it can be noisy when trying to sleep with staff chatting etc. I read there is a staff galley between the two business sections and then in another review that it is a help yourself galley instead, so totally lost!. Trying to work out which seat to go for for quiet overnight trip from Denver to London. Think 3A? – BA don’t seem to know where the galleys are. There are no pics of them on the website seat plans. Seat guru not that much hep either.

A Tour of American Airlines' Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

JT Genter

Since taking delivery of its first Boeing 787 in January 2015, American Airlines has added to its fleet almost one Dreamliner per month. It's scheduled to bring another eight into its fleet in 2018-2019 before starting to take deliveries of a new order of 47 aircraft . In total, American Airlines will have 89 Dreamliners (42 of the smaller 787-8 model and 47 of the larger 787-9)

While the experience in economy is going to be practically the same between the 787-8 and 787-9, there are some noteworthy differences that make that last digit important for premium cabins. If you booked or are looking to book a 787-9, which is often considered better for business class passengers, you might be curious what to expect. So, let's take a look around inside one of those American Airlines Boeing 787-9s.

For reference, the aircraft was stocked for a flight to Seoul, South Korea (ICN).

Flagship Business

While there's a couple of passengers I know that prefer the business class seats on the 787-8, the Zodiac "Concept D" seating is generally disliked for the narrow and unstable seats — landing it #7 on TPG's ranking of the best American Airlines premium seats . However, on the 787-9, there are excellent B/E Aerospace Super Diamond seats installed in the business class cabin (which was #2 in those same rankings). And while you can find these same seats on select 777-200 aircraft, I prefer the window seats on the 787-9 thanks to the large electronically-dimmable Dreamliner windows.

business class world tour

The 787-9 business class consists of one large cabin arranged in eight rows of reverse-herringbone 1-2-1 seating. There are no middle seats in row 8, meaning there are 30 business class seats on the aircraft.

The aisle-side armrest can adjust upward and downward. This bulky-looking armrest can be opened to provide a storage area. In addition to this storage area, there are two compartments on the other side of the seat. The further-back one can be latched and is rated for storage during taxi, takeoff and landing. The forward compartment technically isn't supposed to be used for storage during the critical phases of flight.

business class world tour

Between having all forward-facing seats and strategically designed seat shells, these seats provide a good sense of privacy. However, when walking around the cabin, you can easily see over these seat shells.

business class world tour

There's a couple of downsides to this otherwise excellent hard product. First, American Airlines opted not to install the optional privacy divider between the middle seats. That must have been a very expensive option, as I can't see any reason not to allow passengers to have it. Also, my wife Katie isn't a fan of the storage position of the tray table on these seats, as she bumps into it when sleeping on her side.

business class world tour

For more about the in-flight experience, read the full review of this cabin on a flight from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) to São Paulo, Brazil (GRU).

Premium Economy

The delivery of American Airlines' first 787-9 meant the debut of Premium Economy on the world's largest airline. As of March 11, the airline had 69 aircraft with the new product — including all 15 of its 787-9, all 15 of the Airbus A330-200s, 35 of its 777-200s and now four of its 777-300ER aircraft. The seats on all of those aircraft are virtually the same.

On the 787-9, there are 21 seats installed in a 2-3-2 arrangement.

business class world tour

Some passengers prefer the bulkhead seats, as they have a retractable leg rest and plenty of legroom. The downside is that the in-flight entertainment for these seats is on retractable arms and must be stored for taxi, takeoff and landing.

business class world tour

The non-bulkhead seats have a footrest instead of the legrest. I find the recline on all of the premium economy seats to be just enough to sleep comfortably.

business class world tour

In the seatback, there's a pocket for literature such as the airline magazines and the safety card. There's also a coat/purse hook. Below that, there's a mesh seatback pocket. While you might be able to store a tablet in the seatback, I've found neither storage area is large enough to hold even a small laptop.

business class world tour

While they surely give you more space than in economy, these aren't the most spacious seats. The space between them is 38 inches, and your workspace shrinks noticeably when the passenger in front of your reclines.

business class world tour

The premium economy seats have 11.5-inch in-flight entertainment screens installed. While bright and crisp from the seat, these screens are designed to fade when looking at an angle, providing a bit of privacy and reducing light pollution in the cabin.

business class world tour

While those aren't the best premium economy seats you'll find in the skies, the airline looks to make up for this with solid soft product. On international flights, each seat is stocked with a basic, but stylish amenity kit, Casper-branded pillow and Casper-branded blanket . On flights to Asia, Casper-branded slippers are also provided.

business class world tour

Stay tuned for a full review of American Airlines premium economy on an international flight. Here's my take from the first time flying this product when it launched in October 2016 on domestic routes.

Main Cabin Extra

Main Cabin Extra is American Airlines' designation for extra-legroom seats in the economy cabin . In addition to seats at bulkheads and emergency exit rows, most economy cabins on AA internationally-configured aircraft include a section of extra-legroom seats. These seats are complimentary for American Airlines AAdvantage Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum elites. AA Gold elites get 50% off the standard price until check-in, when they too can select these seats for no charge.

business class world tour

On the 787-9, American Airlines has 36 Main Cabin Extra seats — 12 at bulkheads, 6 at emergency exit rows and 18 standard seats in a 3-3-3 arrangement. The bulkhead seats provide plenty of knee room, but limits your ability to stretch out your legs. The first row of economy (row 12) have bassinet holders at both the window and middle sections.

business class world tour

The emergency exit window seats on some aircraft can have restricted legroom due to the protruding slide. That's not much of an issue on the 787-9. However, there isn't much of a view from these seats either.

business class world tour

At each of the bulkhead and emergency exit row seats, the in-flight entertainment screens are on retractable arms and must be stored for taxi, takeoff and landing.

business class world tour

The standard Main Cabin Extra seats are installed with 35 inches of pitch but are otherwise identical to standard economy seats. There are no additional service elements either. However, American Airlines is planning to add free beer, wine and liquor for these seats on all routes soon.

business class world tour

AA's 787-9 has 200 standard economy "Main Cabin" seats. These seats are installed with 31 inches of pitch. As is now the de facto standard on Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, the economy cabin is arranged with 3-3-3 seating. (Only a few airlines opted for the Boeing-recommended 2-4-2 seating ). This arrangement necessitates a rather narrow 17-inch seat.

business class world tour

Thankfully, there's plenty of overhead space. So, you shouldn't have to worry about having to gate-check your carry-on bag.

business class world tour

Unlike other aircraft that American Airlines flies internationally, AA installs bright in-flight entertainment screens with plenty of content on its 787-9. There's also a universal power plug installed at each seat.

business class world tour

Unlike on some planes which narrow in the back and thus have fewer seats installed, the 787-9 has 3-3-3 seating throughout. If you get stuck in the back, the good news is that even the seats in the last row of economy can recline fully.

And if you're going to recline to sleep, these seats have an under-appreciated feature: adjustable headrests. The headrest has adjustable wings to help support your head in place while you sleep.

business class world tour

Overall Impression

The American Airlines 787-9 is one of the better options in the airline's international fleet. The economy seats are a bit narrow, but it's no worse than the width on AA's retrofit 10-wide 777s . And, having power and in-flight entertainment screen makes the 787 a better option than AA's internationally-operated 757s and 767s.

The premium economy section provides a solid improvement from economy, giving extra legroom, seat width and soft product elements that can justify the ~$200 each way premium for some passengers.

Up front, this is one of my favorite business class cabins in the fleet. The cabin is large — but not massive — and separated from the premium economy by a galley, giving it a more exclusive feel. Combining that with one of the best business class seats in the AA fleet, it's worth seeking out this aircraft when possible.

This article has been updated to reflect American Airlines' order of 47 new Dreamliner aircraft .

2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans Full Field: The PGA Tour's Two-Man Team Game

Irishmen Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy team up for the first time at TPC Louisiana.

  • Author: John Schwarb

Much of the country is finally into the golf season, and for many players that means weekend pairs games. Pick a partner and take on another two-player team, either in a better-ball format or (if you want to see how much you really like your partner) alternate shot.

This week, the PGA Tour does the same thing.

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is a refreshing change from weekly Tour individual stroke play, with 80 teams of two playing the above two formats at TPC Louisiana. The first and third rounds are better ball and the second and fourth are alternate shot, with a cut after 36 holes.

Nick Hardy and Davis Riley walk off the 18th green after winning the 2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Andrew Wevers-USA TODAY Sports

The format always makes for interesting teams, from longtime friends to countrymen to completely random pairings.

Rory McIlroy is making his first appearance at TPC Louisiana, teaming up with fellow Irishman and Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry. They’ll see some familiar faces including their Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, playing with his European assistant captain Francesco Molinari, as well as English brothers Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick.

Brothers and Tour rookies Parker and Pierceson Coody are a team, while at the other end of the age spectrum are Matt Kuchar and PGA Tour Champions regular Steve Stricker. Billy Horschel, who has won the Zurich when it was an individual event as well as a team event, has a new partner in Tyson Alexander, a fellow University of Florida alum.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, close friends and frequent partners on U.S. Cup teams, won the Zurich in 2022 and return. Defending champions Nick Hardy and Davis Riley are also back.

Winners earn FedEx Cup points and two-year Tour exemptions, but do not receive Masters invitations or world ranking points.

Tesco is being monitored by the UK's supermarket regulator after it began imposing an "Amazon-style" fulfilment fee on online suppliers, according to The Times.

The supermarket faced criticism after it imposed the fee, which is linked to processing orders, picking and shipping products, and managing returns.

Brands and suppliers said the fee could put many of them out of business.

Tesco argued it made the decision after its own fulfilment costs grew when it expanded its online operations.

The smallest suppliers with contracts of £250,000 or less are exempt, but bigger suppliers pay from 12p per item for branded goods and 5p for own brands.

Carpetright has been hit by a cyberattack which has prevented it from trading across its 400 UK stores for almost a week, according to a report.

Customers have been unable to place orders in its shops since last Thursday, staff told The Times.

A spokeswoman added that online customers were "largely unaffected" and would be able to make new orders - but the attack will still be a financial blow for the flooring chain.

BP is rolling out a new crime logging platform and body-worn cameras to improve safety for its staff members.

The app-based platform will allow staff to report incidents and get in touch with police, as well as helping BP to identify offenders targeting multiple sites across its business.

The platform will also send an alert when repeat offenders or vehicles of interest are reported on the platform in the local area.

The government has announced a UK-wide ban on wet wipes containing plastic in a bid to reduce pollution.

According to the Marine Conservation Society, 11 billion wet wipes are used in the UK each year. Of these, 90% contain plastic.

Discarded wet wipes frequently litter Britain's beaches and eventually break down into microplastics, which contribute to water pollution and damage ecosystems.

The ban, announced yesterday, should go through parliament this summer.

Rising private school fees are forcing parents to take out loans, move house or turn to taking money from relatives.

More than 71% of 2,000 people surveyed in the Saltus Wealth Index report said the rising cost of private school tuition was impacting choices regarding their children.

Mike Stimpson, a partner at Saltus, said fees had increased by 6% from 2022-23 and were likely to increase another 5% this September.

Out of the respondents, 21% said they would have to move their children out of private school.

Private school costs average around £24,000 a year, according to The Good Schools Guide.

Rising cigarette prices are prompting more people to quit smoking.

While health concerns still remained the top reason for quitting in a survey of nearly 6,000 people, a quarter of respondents said it was down to the cost of cigarettes - up from a fifth before the pandemic.

The average price of a packet of 20 cigarettes is more than £14.

Highlighting the savings that could be made by quitting smoking could help more people to stop, the University College London study said.

The FTSE-100 has hit a second all-time closing high in as many days. The index of the UK's biggest 100 listed companies, having earlier hit a new intra-day high of 8,075.52 at just after 8.24am, finished the session up 20.94 points, around 0.26%, at 8044.81.

It's worth noting, though, the Footsie has been a relative laggard this year. The S&P 500, America's top stock index, is up 6.91% so far in 2024, Japan's Nikkei 225 is up 12.81% and Germany's DAX 40 is up by 8.30%.

The Footsie, by contrast, is up by a mere 4.05% even after the rally of recent sessions. So it can hardly be said to be doing well compared with international peers. On top of those already mentioned, the MIB in Italy is up by 13.24% this year and the CAC 40 in France by 7.46%, for example.

Nonetheless, the Footsie hitting a new record close two days running is notable.

There is no shortage of reasons why.

The most obvious is the recent weakness in sterling. The pound hit a five-month low against an international basket of currencies on Monday following comments from Sir Dave Ramsden, a deputy governor of the Bank of England, on Friday afternoon in which he pointed to the growing likelihood of interest rate cuts in the near future.

That has weakened the pound against the US dollar in particular.

Since three-quarters of earnings of FTSE-100 companies are denominated in other currencies, chiefly the US dollar, a fall in the pound against those currencies makes the future earnings generated by Footsie companies - whose shares are denominated in sterling - cheaper to buy in those currencies.

That was certainly behind the big rally seen on Monday -although today sterling rallied on comments from Huw Pill, the Bank's chief economist, which suggests there is more going on. That something is the relative cheapness of the Footsie in comparison with its peers.

The Footsie currently trades on a price/earnings (P/E) ratio of just 13.22 times - in other words, £1 invested in the index today would be repaid 13.22 years from now.

That is cheap when set against the DAX in Germany, which trades on a P/E of 14.87 times and the CAC in France, which trades on a P/E of 15.91 times or the SMI in Switzerland, which is on 14.52 times.

The main US indices, meanwhile, cavort along on P/E ratios of more than 20 times. Only Spain's leading stock index, the IBEX, looks cheaper than the Footsie by comparison.

The conclusion that should emphatically not be drawn is that the Footsie's recent rally is anything to do with the UK's economic outlook, even though the latter is visibly improving.

The index is chock-full of companies that have little or nothing to do with the UK - such as Fresnillo, a Mexican gold and silver miner; Antofagasta, a Chilean copper and gold miner; and Ashtead Group, a plant and tool hire company which derives £90 in every £100 it earns from the US.

Even companies thought of as British, such as BP, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Shell and Diageo, the world's biggest scotch whisky and tequila producer, derive the vast majority of their earnings outside the UK. In fact, of the 20 biggest companies in the Footsie, only one - the Lloyds Banking Group - can be said to make most of its income in the UK.

For a better gauge of how corporate Britain is doing, investors are better off looking at the FTSE 250, the next biggest 250 listed companies on the London Stock Exchange and home to household names such as Bellway, Games Workshop and ITV.

Some of these also derive a fair chunk of earnings from outside the UK, such as the cruise operator Carnival, the ingredients producer Tate & Lyle and the catalytic converters group Johnson Matthey.

But it is also replete with companies that make most or all of their earnings in the UK, such as the property trio British Land, LondonMetric Property and Derwent London, the housebuilder Bellway and everyone's favourite sausage roll emporium Greggs.

In short, the FTSE 250 is a much better guide to sentiment towards UK companies than the FTSE-100. The bad news is that it is only up by a paltry 0.6% this year so far.

Labour has added an amendment to the government's Renters (Reform) Bill that would prevent landlords from selling a property for two years after a tenancy has begun.

Under the rule, landlords would have to wait two years from the tenancy start date before initiating repossession proceedings.

The bill aims to reform the private rental sector, and also includes plans to scrap "no fault" evictions, make it illegal for landlords to refuse to rent out to those on benefits or with children, and create a national landlord register.

It is being debated tomorrow and is in the report stage, meaning MPs can consider further amendments.

Any amendments will need to be voted through.

Other significant amendments include prevemting tenants from giving notice to quit until they have been in a property for four months.

As tenants have to give two months' notice, this effectively means they will need to stay in a property for six months.

Tory MP Natalie Elphicke has also added an amendment requiring landlords to pay renters and unspecified relocation fee if if they asked them to leave a property within the first two years of a tenancy.

Recent falls in inflation may have spurred talk of interest rate cuts, but the Bank of England's deputy governor has said this is not necessarily enough reason to slash rates.

Speaking at the University of Chicago, Huw Pill said it would be better to cut rates too late rather than too early.

He said little had changed with the inflation and interest rate situation since late March, and that there were "greater risks" associated with going too early.

Despite optimism among some, Mr Pill said there is still a "reasonable way to go" before inflation has stabilised to the level needed for the UK to meet its 2% inflation target in a sustainable way.

"This assessment further supports my relatively cautious approach to starting to reduce Bank rate," he said.

Mr Pill had voted to keep the Bank rate unchanged at 5.25% in the most recent meetings of the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee in March.

Inflation currently stands at 3.2% - the lowest rate since September 2021.

This is still above the Bank's target of 2%.

The next Bank rate decision is next week - but markets don't expect a cut then. June is seen as more likely - though Mr Pill's comments cast some doubt on that.

Petrol prices are exceeding 150p per litre for the first time since last November, according to new data.

Figures from the website Fuel Prices Online shows typical pump prices reached 150.1p per litre on Monday.

The average price of a litre of diesel is also at the highest level since November 2023, at 158.3p.

Experts say rising fuel prices in recent weeks can be attributed to an increase in the cost of oil and a weakening of the pound versus the US dollar.

AA fuel price spokesman Luke Bosdet said while inflation was heading downwards, petrol's rebound to 150p a litre left a "big boulder in the road".

He said: "Five days of falling wholesale costs, with the value of oil coming off the boil, offers hope that pump prices may not get much worse in the short-term.

"However, road fuel priced above 150p a litre grabs the attention of drivers and will lead some to re-tighten their belts on other spending."

The annual 100 fastest growing UK businesses list has been published, with the country's largest electric vehicle fast charging network in top spot.

Environmentally conscious companies dominate the ORESA Growth Index 2024 - with three of the top 10 companies participating in the clean and renewable energy market.

There was also success for the retail sector, with 24 businesses in the list, while the construction and logistics sectors have also seen signs of recovery since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Topping this year's list is Basingstoke-based green energy business InstaVolt, which had an annual growth rate of 362.55%.

The company is the largest owner-operator of rapid public chargers in the UK, with 1,500 charging points.

In 2022-23, the company's third financial year, its revenues hit £18.6m.

Here's the top 10...

Regional success

While London and the South East dominate the list with 59 companies, Northern Ireland has four - up from zero in the past two years.

Companies from Yorkshire and Humber and the North East have increased from six to 10 and from zero to one respectively, while the East Midlands has gone down to six from nine in 2023.

Inheritance tax receipts surged to a record high last year due to the government freezing the threshold at which you start to pay.

Official figures show the government received £7.5bn in inheritance tax (IHT) receipts in the financial year to the end of March - an increase of £400m on the same period the previous year.

(More widely, total tax receipts were £827.7bn - £39.1bn higher than the same period last year - due in part to inflation and other tax threshold freezes.)

Inheritance tax is a tax on the estate of someone who has died - including all property, possessions and money - and is only charged above the tax-free threshold of £325,000.

This threshold has been frozen by the chancellor until 2028.

So, with inflation boosting the value of people's estates, more people are being dragged above the threshold.

The standard inheritance tax rate is 40%.

Jonathan Halberda, specialist financial adviser at Wesleyan Financial Services, says more families "can expect to be caught in its net".

So what can be done to ensure families can keep their wealth?

Use the inheritance tax spouse exemption

Mr Halberda says if you leave your entire estate to your spouse or civil partner, there will be no inheritance tax to pay - even if its value exceeds £325,000.

Make a will

Doing this can mean you can distribute assets to take advantage of tax-free allowances.

"Assets in trusts are no longer in your name and therefore not considered when valuing your estate for inheritance tax," Mr Halberda says.

Gift giving

Gifting money or assets to loved ones before you die can avoid inheritance tax, but there are limits on how much you can give away and who to.

Gifts to charity

Leaving gifts to registered UK charities in your will is exempt from inheritance tax.

By Daniel Binns, business reporter

The FTSE 100 has hit another all-time high this morning following its record performance yesterday.

The index, of the 100 most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange, soared to 8,071 points shortly after the opening. It marks a new "intraday" (during the day) record.

Later in the morning, the FTSE 100 eased back to 8,060 points, but was still up nearly 0.5% on yesterday. The score is based on a calculation of the total value of the shares on the index.

It comes after the index reported a record-high closing figure of 8,023 yesterday following a fall in the value of the pound. A lower pound makes it cheaper for foreign investors to invest in FTSE companies.

One of the reasons the pound is falling against the dollar is interest rates are expected to stay higher for longer in the US - meaning investors will get better returns on their US investments.

The strong performance this morning raises the prospect we could see another record close at the end of today's trading.

Danni Hewson, from investment platform AJ Bell, said the figures were "psychologically important for investors and for London markets as a whole" as the capital has been lagging behind its rivals, particularly the US, in recent years.

Among the firms doing very well this morning is JD Sports. The retailer's shares are up more than 7% in early trading following reports that it is set to buy US rival Hibbett for $1.08bn (£0.87bn).

On the currency markets, £1 will buy you $1.23 US or €1.15, similar to yesterday's five-month lows for the pound.

The price of a barrel of Brent crude oil is up almost 1% at nearly $88 (£71) this morning.

Aldi has recalled one of its products and a police investigation has been launched over fears it "may have been tampered with".

The supermarket has pulled its Village Bakery 8 Tortilla Wraps White, citing safety fears over the "possible presence of metal".

The recall affects items with best before dates up to and including 29 April 2024, and with a pack size of 8x62g.

Anyone who has bought the item is being urged to bring it back to their nearest Aldi.

Notices have been posted at the stores telling customers not to eat the wraps.

Aldi said its products go through "rigorous safety and quality checks" and the item was being recalled as a "precautionary measure".

"As there is an active police investigation we are not able to comment any further on this matter at this time," it said.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) also said Signature Flatbreads UK, which makes the wraps, is "working with the relevant food and police agencies to investigate the cause of the contamination".

No other items from the company are affected, it said.
