What is Trek Project One?

If you’ve never heard of Project One from Trek, you might think it’s secret code for a new product that the bike manufacturer wants to keep under wraps. Something like a Trek electric car or maybe even a battery-powered bike. Sorry to burst your bubble, but Project One isn’t any of those things. And it’s much more than just choosing a unique color scheme for your Trek mountain or road bike.

Project One allows you to fully customize your bike from the frame to the drivetrain and everything in between. And yes, color is still a big part of it, but not just in the obvious places. Imagine selecting different colors not only for the frame and the wheels, but also for the saddle, cable housing and even the stem on your handlebar.

What Does Jans Have to Do with Project One?

Since Jans is a Project One dealer, I asked Karl ‘Jake’ Jacobson, the Manager of our Park Avenue store, to tell me a little about the program. “Project One from Trek started out with road bikes and now they’re doing upper-end mountain bikes,” says Jake. “It’s a cool way to customize your own color choices, components, and wheel sets. The concept is being sold through Jans in partnership with Trek.”

What that means to customers is that not only does our Park Avenue store have Project One paint swatches for you to see up close and personal, but our sales staff is also trained on the program itself and can tell you how to get started. They can also share expert advice on componentry and drivetrain options. Most importantly, Jans has some of the Project One models available in our rental and demo programs, so that potential customers can take them for a test ride to help determine which bike they want to order. For the remainder of 2014, Jans will offer the Domane 4.7 with Ultegra components as a road bike demo and the Trek Fuel EX 8 as a mountain bike rental. In 2015, the Trek Émonda will also be available to ride.

What Kind of Trek Bike Can I Order?

Since Trek has made Project One available on more affordable models of road and mountain bikes, the component, wheel and color combinations are virtually endless. So the first step in the process could potentially be the hardest – choosing the model of bike that’s right for you.

While demoing a bike will give you a feel for the bike itself, what really determines the best model for you is how often you ride. “Regardless of whether you’re buying a mountain or road bike, the more time you spend in the saddle, the lighter you want the bike,” advises Jake. “Someone who rides 4-5 hours a week will want the lightest, strongest, best components. In the case of someone who rides 2 weeks out of the summer, the components, and possibly the weight of the bike, aren’t as critical.” For mountain bikes, the Trek Project One models include the Superfly or Fuel EX while roadies can select a Madone, Domane, Émonda, Silque or Speed Concept. Women’s specific design (WSD) models are also available. For a full list of models visit the Project One website .

How Does Trek Project One Work?

After you’ve chosen the bike that you want to customize, the next step is to go to the Project One website and start designing. You can personalize paint colors, drivetrain, components and accessories.

The first step is selecting your frame paint colors, and these aren’t just the standard black and white. Choose from a custom color inspired by Tour de France rider Fabian Cancellara, or my personal favorite, the Real Fire Signature Series which features blue, green or red flames. Customers who select any Signature Series paint job, not just the flame theme, get the added bonus of designing a personalized signature decal that will be displayed on the top tube of the bike.

The next step is selecting your drivetrain. Choose from road bike gruppos such as Shimano 105, Dura Ace or Ultegra and mountain bike options including Sram XX1 and X01 or Shimano XT and XTR. Just make sure that your gruppo is consistent with the value of your bike and your riding style. “For someone purchasing a $2,000 Project One road bike, it doesn’t make sense to add Dura Ace to the bike,” cautions Jake. “That would be like putting a race binding on a beginner ski.” If you’re uncertain about the benefits of various drivetrain options, just come into Jans. Our bike experts will be happy to educate you.

Before moving on from the drivetrain decision, all customers get the added bonus of selecting a custom cable housing color. Mountain bike customers then determine their suspension preferences while roadies move on to the next big decision point – individual componentry.

Here the options are vast. Think wheelset, tires, stem, headset, handlebar style, bar tape, seat mast cap and saddle. For customers overwhelmed by the myriad of choices, Trek offers pre-configured component combinations to take the guesswork out of the process. Alternatively, riders who want to geek out on componentry can have a blast with endless possibilities that will give them the bike of their dreams.

Why Order a Project One Bike?

First off, it gives you a chance to make your riding buddies jealous with a bike that is completely customized to your riding style. And, quite frankly, the building process itself is a blast. Just ask the Jans’ bike shop mechanics that picked out unisex and women’s Project One bikes that we sold in our store this season.

“Project One is just so personalized,” says Jake. “One customer can select the top-end 7 series Madone, another can choose a 6 series that is still a pretty damn good bike for the money and someone else can choose a 5 series which is still responsive and lightweight without getting to race weight. Customers can switch it up and put anything on the bike component-wise. It’s endless what you can do with Project One.”

How Long Until I Get My Bike?

Now for the good news/bad news. As expected, most people order their Project One bikes in the summer, during biking season. According to Jake, “orders placed during the heat of the summer take about 2 months. But in the winter, you can have your bike in about 2-3 weeks.”

Our advice? Start demoing bikes now and talk with our experts about all of the different drivetrain and component options to determine exactly what type of bike you want to build. Then during mud season, or in the dead of winter, go online to trek.com, click on Custom Project One and have fun designing your personalized bike.

Once your bike has been handmade by the experts at Trek, it will be shipped to Jans (or your closest Trek dealer) where our Expert mechanics will assemble it; making sure your Project One bike works exactly as it should. Then all that’s left for you to do is take it for out for your first ride.

Trek Speed Concept 7 Series Project One – Review

We were excited when Trek rolled out their revised Speed Concept in mid-2013 . They had taken a frame that had been performing at their pro-peloton level and added a list of new features that specifically benefited the triathlon market, yet left the ability to be UCI legal for those who wanted it. To say we were looking forward to getting our hands on one may have been an understatement.

21395_10151894958288296_284259710_n

A few months later, we got our first good look at the Speed Concept . From that point on, we knew we were hooked. When we reached out to Trek for a test model, we were met a better answer than we’d expected. Rather than an off-the-shelf Speed Concept, how about a Project One? If you’re unfamiliar, Project One is Trek’s in-house customization department. We were going to customize the perfect Speed Concept just for AG, and then we’d take a few months to test it.

watermarked-DSC_0002

So here we are nine months later ready to share the AG team’s experience with our Trek Speed Concept 7 Series Project One.

watermarked-DSC_0091

The Speed Concept

The speed concept got a thorough redesign for the 2014 model year. And rather than “revolutionary,” we think a more apt description may be “evolutionary.” Trek completely rethought the accessories that are a necessity for triathletes. Trek claimed their new design represents a 99-second improvement over its old form in Ironman Hawaii, and 148 seconds in Ironman Arizona when ridden at a 20mph average. The new SC also embodies a true “dual personality.” While it can be UCI legal, the SC can also throw the rulebook into the fire and become a triathlete’s new best friend.

watermarked-DSC_0121

To accomplish this, the Speed Concept features two configurations. First is a “standard” fork that is UCI compliant with a 3:1 aspect ratio. For the triathletes out there (and Trek recognizes that the majority of the SC buyers will fall in this camp), there is a UCI-illegal, high-aspect-ratio (6:1) fork specifically designed to achieve every last bit of aerodynamic gain possible. The base bar can likewise be substituted for either a UCI-legal bar or a deeper non-legal version.

watermarked-DSC_0100

Underneath the bottom bracket you will find the newest trick up the SC’s sleeve – the Speed Fin. The Speed Fin is a triathlon-specific rear brake cover that integrates a fairing to both improve aerodynamics as well as stiffen the brake (a UCI-legal cover is available that does not include the fairing but still stiffens the brake). Trek claims that the Speed Fin saves an average of 10 grams of drag between 0 and 12.5 degrees of yaw.

watermarked-DSC_0149

One of the most interesting changes to the Speed Concept was its new mono extensions. Rather than individual bars connected to the base bar, the new SC’s aerobars are one single piece and are available in S-bend, straight, ergo (skitip), and short ergo. The pads are then connected to the mono extension with two bolts. When we built our Speed Concept we were shocked at just how easy it was to build the bike. And when we had to refit the bike from one editor to another, adjusting the bars was extremely straight forward—a welcome change from having to use a level to make sure we had both bars perfectly in line.

watermarked-DSC_0162

The original Speed Concept introduced Trek’s Draft Box to the world, but the redesign takes it to the next level. The Draft Box is a rear storage compartment that can be fitted to the rear of the seat tube. First thing to know is that the Draft Box is draft neutral. Therefore you can carry almost anything you’d need and suffer zero aero penalty. The new Draft box is larger than the original and fits securely. We never ejected it throughout all of our rides. It can also be easily removed for UCI-legal events. Oh, and speaking of carrying anything you need, our Draft Box was filled with a tire, two tubes, two CO2s, an inflator, and a multi-tool. Obviously the Speed Concept quickly became our ultimate Sherpa bike.

watermarked-DSC_0147

Up front is the new Speed Box (bento box) and a BTA cage that mounts to the mono extensions. The BTA cage features an integrated computer mount, which mounts cleanly to the mono extensions via the extensions mounting holes.

Project One

When Trek asked us if we were interested in Project One, we couldn’t say “yes” fast enough. After all, every member of the AG team has spent many an hour spec’ing out their perfect Speed Concept, Madone and Domane since Project One was introduced. This was our chance to do it for real.

watermarked-DSC_0134

The first choice we had to make was do we go with a 7 series or 9 series? With the 2014 update, both now have the integrated front end, so the only major difference is the type of carbon fiber used (500 Series OCLV vs 600 Series OCLV). Additionally, only the 9 series is available in UCI legal Time Trial form. For a few seconds, we briefly considered building a true TT bike. However we quickly realize that our goal should be to create our perfect triathlon weapon. So we ditched the 9 series and went to a 7 series, which (by our math) also saves about $800.

Next up is paint selection. If you know the AG team, you can imagine that this bike had to be lime green. Then we decided to add some blue and black accent colors to finish it off. You also have the option to add a custom signature, but since this is a test bike, we decided against it.

watermarked-DSC_0024

Gruppo selection was a tough decision. Did we go with top-of-the line electronic with a Dura Ace 9070 Di2 with integrated SRM? Or maybe we would stick with mechanical and go SRAM Red 22. On the other end of the spectrum was Shimano 105. But who were we kidding, we knew what we would choose before we even started – Ultegra 6870 . We have been fans of this group set since it was first introduced; the first real attempt by a manufacturer to bring an electronic group set to market at a semi-affordable price point (and considering you can now get a Felt B2 with Di2 for $3,699 , we think they made an impact!)

watermarked-DSC_0020

Component selection is where you choose your aero package, wheelset, tires, handlebar, bar tape, and saddle. Because we had chosen the 7 series, the only aero package option was the Full Aero Package: for triathlon racing. However, if we had gone with a 9 series, we could have chosen the UCI-Legal Aero Package. Wheelset selection runs from simple aluminum Race TLR clinchers to a full Aeolus 9 D3 Tubular race setup. We went back and forth and finally decided to go with a clincher-based race setup. Even though it wasn’t an option on the site, we were able to work with Trek to do an Aeolus 7/9 D3 clincher setup. We went with a 7/9 since it most closely resembled in size the Reynolds Aero 72/90 we tested in 2013, and we thought it would make a great comparison (more on that later). With the carbon wheels, you can choose sticker color (obviously we went blue) and tire selection. Since we are already such fans of the R4 Aero , we went with those.

watermarked-DSC_0095

For the cockpit we got the triathlon (non-UCI legal) basebar with our selection of the triathlon Full Aero Package. We went back and forth on S-Bend mono extension versus ergo. Devon wanted S-Bend, Mike wanted ergo….Devon won. Of course we had three types of bar tape in 15 colors to choose from, but we went black gel. And finally, time for saddle selection. Honestly we expect most people building a custom Speed Concept to cheap out on the saddle since they already have their perfect saddle from a previous bike. But for us, we went with the Hilo RXL. We have previously tested the Hilo RXL Speed Dial and wanted to try out the original.

watermarked-DSC_0140

Finally, the last step – accessories. The draft box is a must. Honestly, it’s one of our favorite features of the bike. The 9 series is equipped with it standard, but for the 7 series, it adds an extra $62.99 to the total price. We’re telling you now, it’s worth it! We also went with the top tube Speed Box. Our one regret is we didn’t choose to go with a DuoTrap sensor. Trek designs their frames to cleanly accommodate the DuoTrap speed\cadence sensor without any zip ties or tape. It was one of those small items we missed. If we did it all over again, we would include it.

watermarked-DSC_0138

Wow. Even after all that, we haven’t even finished. Once the “fun stuff” has been decided on, it’s time for sizing. We had to choose frame size, chain ring size, crank length, cassette range, stem size and seat post size. For those purchasing a Project One, you won’t be doing this on your own. Trek will help you set up a consult with a local Trek dealer to get this right. Our advice is to take your time here and make sure it’s perfect. Hopefully the dealer will have some sort of fit bike where you can test out the configurations. You are building your perfect bike, so above all, make sure the fit is absolutely perfect.

AG SC 2

And then we were done. Now it was just a matter of waiting for our masterpiece to arrive. Because the Project Ones are built and painted to order, it does take longer than an off-the-shelf bike. Some say the waiting is the hardest part, and we would be inclined to agree. But then, finally, a box arrived and our perfect Speed Concept was delivered.

Our Thoughts

Nine months is a long time to have a bike. And truth be told, it was way longer than we originally intended. Let’s just say that 2014 wasn’t exactly kind to the AG team. Two thirds of our editorial staff broke at least one major bone last year, and that had a major impact on how quickly we were finishing reviews (our hopes are high that 2015 is a different story). So for 9 long months, we saw our lime green Speed Concept sitting in the garage at AG HQ. And for 9 months we felt guilty every time we saw it. The Speed Concept is clearly a bike that begs to be ridden, not sit in the garage.  The Speed Concept exudes speed – between the aero tube shapes, ultra clean wiring, and deep wheels, it looked like it was moving fast while it was just sitting still. But we may be getting ahead of ourselves.

watermarked-DSC_0030

The unboxing of the Speed Concept was extremely straight forward. Trek had pre-cabled the bike, so for the most part, it was plug and play. The wiring is clean – honestly some of the cleanest we have ever seen. The only time you see it is where it exits the integrated stem for the junction box. Everything else is self-contained inside the stem, base bar, and mono extensions. We initially fit the bike for Devon. After all, he chose the mono extensions. So first ride was his. The cockpit is extremely adjustable. You can easily move the extensions forward or back, as well as adjust the pads relative to the extensions. For anyone who has ever tried to ensure that their bars are equally level, while having both the pads and bars set at the perfect distance, the mono extensions are a welcome change. Adjustments took half the time of other bikes we have worked with.

The seat post is a simple two-bolt design. There’s no hidden wedge that you can accidentally lose inside the frame (something we hate to admit that we’ve done on more than one occasion). All this adjustability made swapping to a second rider a breeze. When Mike wanted to ride the Trek we loosened a few bolts and were off. Overall, it was probably one of the fastest swaps we’ve done.

watermarked-DSC_0025

The one tricky part of the initial setup was the brakes, specifically the front brakes. Trek has hidden the centerpull front brakes behind a cover on the front fork. And while this makes for an ultra-clean front end, it does create some slight challenges for adjusting the brakes. For anyone who has ever adjusted centerpull brakes, you know that they can be quite challenging. Luckily we never reached the point of wanting to pull our hair out, but let’s just say that the longest part of the setup process was definitely the brakes.

watermarked-DSC_0152

Speaking of brakes, lets jump over to the wheels and braking performance. We had a great experience with the Aeolus 3 D3 clinchers when we tested them previously. So we expected the 7/9 combo on our Speed Concept to be much the same. From a ride perspective they were everything the 3s were, but faster. And in so many ways they reminded us of the Reynolds Aero 72/90 set we had previously reviewed. The D3 is a 27mm wide design with a depth of 70mm for the 7 and 90mm for the 9. They were incredibly fast on the flats, but never felt like a huge burden to get up the hills.

Red Solid Line - Aeolus 9 D3 (90mm) with Bontrager R4 Aero tire Red Dotted Line - Aeolus 9 (90mm) D3 with Bontrager R3 tire Black Solid Line - Brand Z (81 mm) with Bontrager R3 tire

Red Solid Line – Aeolus 9 D3 (90mm) with Bontrager R4 Aero tire Red Dotted Line – Aeolus 9 (90mm) D3 with Bontrager R3 tire Black Solid Line – Brand Z (81 mm) with Bontrager R3 tire

Our only knock on the wheels was braking performance, and honestly this may have had as much to do with the brakes on the Speed Concept as the wheels themselves. When we tested the Aeolus 3s we found “braking performance that, for run-of-the-mill cork pads, was quite good” when used on a road bike with standard Ultegra brakes. With the 7/9 on the Speed Concept, we found the overall braking performance to be behind what we had seen on other tri bikes \ carbon wheel combinations. That’s certainly not to say that the braking performance was bad (we put more than enough miles on the bike and never felt concerned), it’s just that other combinations are better. This just wouldn’t be the wheel\bike setup we would want to take screaming down some steep switchbacks at 80 km\h.

watermarked-DSC_0103

Of course time-trial-type riding (riding hard in a deep aero position) is what this bike was built for and what it excelled at. It was extremely comfortable to hold for long miles. The ease of adjustability of the cockpit allowed us to dial in the perfect position (plus, since this was a Project One, it was truly fit to match us from the moment it popped out of the mold) and just enjoy the miles. The ride was never harsh or jarring either. Devon often said that riding the Speed Concept was the closest to riding on glass he was going to get.

watermarked-DSC_0105

We also found the Speed Concept was quick to accelerate from a stop. With its huge bottom bracket area that really wasn’t a huge surprise. And while the bike was not light (especially when compared to Trek’s own Emonda), it never overtly felt heavy. Sure, we wouldn’t take this bike sprinting, but a rolling course would be no challenge for it.

watermarked-DSC_0109

In many ways we found this to be the ultimate triathlete training bike. You could easily carry enough equipment for a century ride without any concern of needing refuel stops or someone to call for emergency SAG. With a BTA bottle up front, two bottles in the triangle and two on the rear, you were all set for hydration. In the Speed Box (bento box) we fit all the gels we could possibly need. And as we mentioned above, the Draft box was filled with a tire, 2 tubes, 2 CO2s, an inflator, and a multitool – more than plenty to get you through the ride. In fact, the Speed Concept became our go to Sherpa bike. When editors were doing race training and carrying minimal onboard equipment, another lagged behind on the Speed Concept carrying all the extra bottles and spare equipment they both could need.

watermarked-DSC_0153

One thing we did want to note was in regard to the BTA mount and mono extensions. The mono extensions include mounting holes for a BTA cage for use with a standard bottle or Speedfil A2 this was a thing of beauty. We never saw a bottle eject or shift, and the integrated computer mount put our Edge 500 in our immediate line of sight. However, if you are looking to use other BTA solutions out there, your choices may be limited. Because the actual aerobars on the extensions are shorter than most, you are limited on what type of BTA setup you can use. To further clarify, there is less room than what you’d find on a more “standard” setup, which typically provides a fairly large amount of distance between the shifters and the basebar. We weren’t able to fit a Torhans Aero 30 , Profile Design Aero HC or Nathan Sports AP Pro . You could conceivably fit an XLAB Torpedo by mounting the cage straight to the pursuits. But take our advice, if you have a strong preference for a specific BTA option, you may want to try to test fit it before you take the plunge here.

Wrapping Up

Nine months is a long time to get to know a bike, and certainly longer than most reviews we’ve completed up to this point. And of course we fully admit that most of that time was due to the prolonged stint of bad luck the team experienced last year. Despite that, we also cannot deny the fact that we simply didn’t want to give the Speed Concept back. Too often someone on the team would ask “Hey I am doing a 70-miler with race setup this weekend, can someone pace me on the SC?” And the only reason why Mike didn’t chose the SC for his A-race last fall was that he simply prefers a cockpit with ski tips. Otherwise there’s no doubt in our minds that the Speed Concept would have been his weapon of choice. And as we’ve said in the past—if we’d race it, we would certainly buy it.

There’s no TV show or rapping host. But with Trek you get the chance to pimp a different type of ride. For a hefty price, Trek’s Project One program gives riders the chance to fully customize a road bike — down to the cable housing and grip tape.

To start, you pick from one of 13 Trek bikes to pimp, including Madone and Equinox TTX models. You can spend as little as $3,400 or as much as $8,600 for the base bike. From there, you tweak color and graphics, add your own text to the frame, customize wheels and components, change the color of the grip tape, and more.

You can make your bike as plain or elaborate as you want. All customization happens onscreen and in a Web browser. Hit “buy” and your custom steed will be in the works in short order.

You could modify basic options like color for free or upgrade the drivetrain for more than $1,900. You could even change the wheels and subtract more than $2,000.

Trek Project One Road Custom Program 2019 Updates

Trek’s Project One has long been building high-dollar custom bikes to satisfy even the pickiest of customers. The MTB side saw a significant upgrade earlier this year, with the addition of new ICON paint schemes – but now it’s the roadies’ turn.

what does trek project one mean

The road models available to customize include the new Domane SLR (above), Madone SLR/SLR Speed, Emonda SLR, and Speed Concept.

New component choices include R-Series road tires, Pro IsoCore VR-C and VR-S handlebars, Aeolus Pro 3 V wheels, and Aeolus sadles.

There are also two new ICON premium paint jobs in addition to the carryover options. Trek provided the descriptions below…

what does trek project one mean

“NEW – Molten Marble brings the heat. With hypnotizing swirls of pearly red lava and smoky chrome, this paint scheme is a real force of nature. Available with or without Trek-Segafredo race team logos.”

what does trek project one mean

“NEW – Cosmos is a paint scheme of galactic proportions. Take your ride from ordinary to otherworldly with three phases of color that fade from planetary purple to deep dark blue to the metallic black of deep space, all dotted with unique, hand-flecked constellations.”

what does trek project one mean

“No two Brushed Liquid Metal paint schemes are alike. Beneath the glossy finish, the unique hand-scuffed undercoat has an industrial character with a deep, smoky tint.”

what does trek project one mean

“Refliptive is a new twist on a coveted scheme of cycling’s past. Shades of amethyst and bright green flip to purple in changing light like a mood ring (if you’re always in a good mood). This scheme also features reflective logos.”

what does trek project one mean

“Up close, the Black Gold paint scheme is as classy as a tuxedo. From a distance, the metallic flake and the raised dimensional logos give it a golden texture and depth.”

what does trek project one mean

“Is every one of your rides a vision quest? Prismatic Pearl is a psychedelic, mind-bending paint scheme on a different plane of consciousness. It morphs in changing light to show every color and shade in the rainbow.”

The new Project One options are available as of July 25, 2019, with pricing adjusted based on the options you choose.

Antoine

Black Gold Star for you, sir. 😀

Gillis

To boldy go if your wallet can take you…

whatever

Funny how cheap big box bikes so often much more visually appealing over the “Name Brand” bikes that can be $500-$5000 or more. I’m sure someone (likely a bike snob) will be along shortly to tell me “aesthetics shouldn’t matter” crap. To which I say fine, go put Huffy graphics on your $3-5K bike until it visually is a Huffy. Now tell me it shouldn’t matter….. When you make your expensive bike look like a cheap bike and ride it for years, you will have a leg to stand on then.

bike snob

Aesthetics shouldn’t matter.

Eggs Benedict

But they do.

Lets see your Huffy!

Huffagnolo SuperMagna

Gladly! They might also have a 7-11 logo as well and be built by Ben Serrota or John Slatwa or Eddy Merckx : )

Padrote

I can’t tell what you’re on about but aesthetics definitely matter and for the most part people who get paid lots of money to do design have better designs and opinions than people on the internet.

Heffe

They never include CX bikes in this program.

Dinger

Likely that CX don’t sell enough to justify it.

Seraph

Trek: “We added new options to our P1 road lineup!” Us: “Ok but can you add ‘cross, gravel, and more mountain bikes to the P1 system?” Trek: “Look! New colors!” Us: “Yeah but–” Trek: “And components!” Us: “If we could just have some diversity–” Trek: “ROAD BIKES”

Celest Greene

That red reminds me of some early ’00s Ellsworth finishes. So many conflicting emotions.

I love the bass boat sparkles though.

JBikes

is the size of the trek logo in the lead photo a joke?

Richard Lang

Its their team design and it is optional (Available with or without Trek-Segafredo race team logos)

I realize that. But it’s still ridiculous regardless. Nobody was looking at last years bikes and saying “what is that”. The team TREK logo was always prominent. Now its comical. There is such a thing as overdoing it.

Robin

It’s too bad Project One doesn’t offer Campagnolo components.

Befitting Bicycles

1. Unless you have native heritage you shouldn’t be talking about “vision quests”. 2. I’m tired of people pretending that a semi custom paint job on a stock Geometry bike with limited component options is “custom”. For that amount of money you can get an actual custom bike: custom Geometry, any paint you want, any parts group you want. 3. Those trek logo sizes have gotten out of hand.

uomorana71

100% true facts

John

Strange that Project One doesn’t offer Shimano’s GRX components even as an option, given that the GRX groupset was specifically designed for all-road bikes like the Domane.

Then again, it wouldn’t be a Trek if the project team didn’t insist on making at least a couple of boneheaded design decisions.

Raleigh Houston Kelly

Where can I find a trek madone in the Malton marble paint scheme size 52 .bc most tre shops did not have them in their shop

Trek Madone 9 Series Project One

It's hard to explain the system without using the overused phrase 'vertical compliance', but that's what's on offer here: extra vertical compliance.

Here's a video that explains it from when Trek launched the Domane, the bike that first featured the IsoSpeed decoupler.

So, does the IsoSpeed decoupler work?

In short, yes. The longer version is: yeeeees.

Many aero bikes are, let's face it, fairly uncomfortable. It's hard to persuade their deep-profiled tubes to flex at all in pursuit of comfort. Trek's IsoSpeed system is a clever solution.

If you're familiar with riding a full suspension mountain bike, it's nothing at all like that. Not in the same county. But the IsoSpeed system does smooth over the lumps and bumps to a n appreciable degree. The effect is subtle, but it is noticeable. If you get the chance, take a Madone 9 Series on a test ride and you'll feel it for yourself.

As with most other bikes, you can fit headset spacers to fine-tune the height of the stem, although they're a clam shell design specific to the Madone 9 Series. You can fit larger tyres to add more comfort, too; the bike will take a 28mm width.

what does trek project one mean

Aerodynamics

The Madone 9 Series' other major features are aimed at aerodynamic efficiency. Trek says that this is the fastest aero bike out there. We're upfront about the fact that we can't test aerodynamics, but we can explain what Trek has brought to the party here.

what does trek project one mean

Frame tubes, fork legs and the seatmast are made to Kammtail profiles (Trek calls its profiles Kammtail Virtual Foil, or KVF). In other words, Trek has designed them to slip through the air with as little drag as possible, then chopped the back of those profiles off square to retain most of the aero performance while saving weight, avoiding handling issues in crosswinds, and remaining within the UCI's bike design rules.

One of the most eye-catching features is the front end where the direct-mount centre-pull brake is integrated into the fork. The cable is fully internal, routed down the front of the proprietary steerer tube and through the head tube.

what does trek project one mean

The brakes are from Trek's in-house Bontrager brand and they're designed specifically for this bike. The top of the front calliper is hidden within the head tube. There's not enough space in there for the calliper to move when the fork is turned so Trek has developed what it calls 'Vector Wings' – small flaps that flip up to allow the movement.

what does trek project one mean

Those Vector Wings look quite fragile but I didn't manage to catch them on anything during testing, still less damage them. They are replaceable if you do destroy them in a stack.

The idea of all this front end integration is to ensure continuous airflow towards the down tube.

The top section of the Madone XXX integrated bar/stem is KVF-shaped too, and it's surprisingly comfortable. It fills your palm so there's very little pressure when you rest your hands up there, and the rearward edge is blunt enough that it doesn't dig into the space between your thumb and index finger.

what does trek project one mean

Trek reckons that the new bar saves 34g of drag (the average over 0-20 degrees of yaw) compared with the current Bontrager XXX Aero bar (normalised to 30mph).

The water bottles have been sited to minimise drag, with the one on the seat tube positioned as low as possible, and Trek says that even the 3S chain keeper (the little device that stops the chain coming off the inner chainring) has been designed with aerodynamics in mind.

what does trek project one mean

The new Madone also features a neat little design on the down tube that Trek calls the 'Control Center'. This allows you to make gear adjustments. It houses the front derailleur adjustment dial on bikes with mechanical setups, and it's where the Di2 battery and junction box live on bikes, like our test model, with electronic gears (it is not compatible with Campagnolo EPS). You get access to the trim button through a window in the top. A one-tab release exposes the charging port.

what does trek project one mean

It's about time more brands started hiding that Di2 junction box, and Trek has come up with a great solution while keeping it highly accessible. Full marks!

The rear brake is in a traditional position on the seatstays (higher end models of the last Madone design had a chainstay-mounted brake, but Trek has re-sited it for convenience), and like the front brake it's a centre-pull design, the cable passing through the top tube with a stop at the seat tube.

what does trek project one mean

So, that's a whole lot of aero tech! And this is a very condensed version, believe it or not. As I mentioned, Trek says that all this adds up to make the Madone 9 Series the most efficient aero road bike out there. Other brands make similar claims for their own bikes, of course. I'd suggest you read Trek's white paper for the full in-depth explanation before you spend your cash.

I spoke a lot about the Madone 9 Series' comfort up top, but that's by no means its only skill. This bike is freaky in that it manages to combine soft seating with a super-fast feel.

You do pay a slight weight penalty for the IsoSpeed system. Putting one tube within another tube and adding a pivot has to add a little weight – there's no such thing as a free lunch – but Trek still claims that a 56cm Madone in an H1 geometry comes in at 950g. Our complete 58cm bike weighs 7.0kg (15.4lb) on the button. Okay, that's not as superlight as some other high-end race bikes out there – Trek's own Emonda is lighter, for example – but it's still pretty light, and aerodynamic efficiency beats a light weight in most situations.

The Madone feels quick and responsive as soon as you climb aboard and fire your legs into action. Our bike – not a standard model but a similar build to the 9.9 (see below) – shoots up to speed quickly and maintains that speed beautifully.

what does trek project one mean

Climbing feels great on this bike. It's punchy on the short, sharp climbs, zippy when you get out of the saddle, and it feels good when you sit down for a long slog with your hands resting on the top of the Madone XXX integrated bar/stem (see above).

Descending is a real buzz. That's partly because the IsoSpeed system helps skim over any bumps and holes in the road, and partly because the bike as a whole is great for pinning it through the tight stuff and high-speed changes of line.

I wouldn't say that the centre-pull Bontrager brakes are right up there with Shimano Dura-Ace in terms of all-out power, but modulation is good so you're not making much of a compromise here.

what does trek project one mean

When it comes to sprinting, the frame feels taut and efficient but that handlebar isn't the stiffest ever. I've found this before with bars that have ultra-squashed top sections. When you're out of the saddle and your hands are on the drops, you can get a bouncing sensation up front as that slim carbon-fibre profile flexes slightly. It's purely down to the bar rather than anything to do with the frame or fork, and I only had this happen when I was giving it my best Greipel moves. Don't get me wrong, it's not the most flexy bar I've ever encountered, but it's not the stiffest either.

what does trek project one mean

Overall, though, the Madone behaves superbly, the best feature being that its high level of comfort keeps you feeling fresher and up for the fight that much longer.

How easy is it to change a brake cable on a Madone 9 Series bike? It's a more complicated job than on a standard bike because both run almost completely internally from the lever to the calliper.

There are no barrel adjusters for the brakes either – you have to use a diddy Allen key to wind each brake pad closer to the rim, so that's something best done at home rather than out on the road.

Taking the bike apart for travel is a bit more complicated than usual too, although Trek gives you full instructions on how to do it painlessly.

For those reasons, living with a Madone 9 Series bike might be a touch more difficult than usual, but it's nothing you can't handle.

One other potential downside, depending on your point of view, is that many replacement parts you buy will have to come from Bontrager. The brakes are proprietary, for example, and so is the fork, the handlebar and the seatmast. You won't be able to shop around and look for deals from other brands.

what does trek project one mean

Our Madone is built to Trek's low and stretched H1 geometry, although most of the range (see below) come in Trek's H2 fit – slightly less low and stretched but still race-focused.

To put some figures on that, a 56cm Madone 9 Series in an H1 fit has an effective top tube of 56cm and a head tube of 14cm. The same bike in an H2 fit has the same length top tube but a 17cm head tube. The main difference between them is in the stack height (the vertical distance between the bottom bracket and the top of the head tube): 54.9cm versus 57.7cm.

what does trek project one mean

The Bontrager 9 Series bikes are hi-tech and they come with hi-tech price tags.

The most accessible Trek Madone 9 Series bike is the 9.2, equipped with a Shimano Ultegra mechanical groupset and Bontrager's new Paradigm Elite wheels. It's £4,500.

The 9.5 with a Shimano Dura-Ace mechanical groupset and Bontrager Aura wheels is £6,000 and the Madone 9.9 (available in standard and women's versions) with a Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 groupset and Bontrager Aeolus 5 D3 wheels is £9,000.

All of these bikes come with H2 fit frames.

The Madone Race Shop Limited model, with a frame made from a higher grade of carbon fibre and built to an H1 geometry, Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 and Bontrager Aeolus 5 D3 wheels, is £9,750.

An H2 frameset is £3,350 while a Race Shop Limited H1 frameset (with that higher grade of carbon fibre) is £4,100.

The bike we have here is essentially the Madone Race Shop Limited model, but Trek painted it in road.cc colours for our review. If you happened to want this colour (or any other colour/finish), you'd need to go through Trek's Project One programme that allows you to customise both the spec and the finish.

As cyclists we get used to having hyperbole thrown our way by bike brands releasing what are actually pretty ordinary bikes, but the Madone 9 Series backs up Trek's claims with a fabulous performance out on the road. This is a bike that's genuinely very different from the norm – and not just different for the sake of being different. The technology on display here contributes to a bike that's very fast and very comfortable.

what does trek project one mean

If I had a bottomless pot of cash available to buy a high-end race bike (if only!), this is where I'd be spending my money right now. If you do have the money and can live with the fact that maintenance in some areas is more complicated than usual, the Madone 9 Series deserves a place somewhere near the top of your wish list.

Stunningly good bike that offers a fabulous mix of speed and comfort, although, as usual, the top-end tech comes at a price

Tell us what the bike is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about the bike?

It's a full-on race bike. Trek divides its road line into three: Emonda for those wanting light weight, Domane for those wanting comfort, Madone for those wanting aerodynamics.

Trek says: "Madone is the ultimate fusion of power, aerodynamics, ride quality and integration. There are no two ways about it: the first true super-bike is a marvel of road bike engineering.

"Every detail of Madone is engineered for unprecedented futuristic performance, ride quality and efficiency, putting every single watt you earn toward demolishing your competition."

Frame and fork

Tell us about the build quality and finish of the frame and fork?

Excellent quality.

Tell us about the materials used in the frame and fork?

Our frame and fork are made from 700 Series OCLV carbon fibre. In truth, the 600 used for most of the other 9 Series bikes is very similar in terms of properties and weight.

Tell us about the geometry of the frame and fork?

Ours came in Trek's low and stretched H1 fit. 9 Series Madones are also available in a slightly more relaxed H2 fit (see review for details).

How was the bike in terms of height and reach? How did it compare to other bikes of the same stated size?

The H1 fit is fairly low. If your back doesn't like an aggressive position, go for the H2.

Riding the bike

Was the bike comfortable to ride? Tell us how you felt about the ride quality.

Very comfortable. That's one of the bike's key characteristics.

Did the bike feel stiff in the right places? Did any part of the bike feel too stiff or too flexible?

It felt stiff around the bottom bracket and the head tube. The only place I noticed a lack of stiffness was in the handlebar when I was sprinting; there was a small amount of bouncing there when riding hard out of the saddle with my hands on the drops.

How did the bike transfer power? Did it feel efficient?

Yes, it felt efficient around the bottom bracket and through the centre of the bike.

Was there any toe-clip overlap with the front wheel? If so, was it a problem?

A small amount. Not a problem.

How would you describe the steering? Was it lively, neutral or unresponsive? Neutral to lively.

Tell us some more about the handling. How did the bike feel overall? Did it do particular things well or badly?

I enjoyed descending on this bike thanks to the IsoSpeed decoupler and good manoeuvrability.

Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's comfort? would you recommend any changes?

The main feature that leads to the bike's comfort is the frame's IsoSpeed decoupler.

Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's stiffness? would you recommend any changes?

I thought the handlebar could have been stiffer, but it's proprietary. I'd only want to change it if I was a sprinter.

Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's efficiency? would you recommend any changes?

The wheel stiffness is good and the same goes for the chainset.

I thought the handlebar could have done with being stiffer for sprinting.

The drivetrain

Wheels and tyres, your summary.

Did you enjoy riding the bike? Yes

Would you consider buying the bike? If I had the money, no doubt about it.

Would you recommend the bike to a friend? Yes

Use this box to explain your score

This exceptional bike boasts some novel tech that really moves the ride forward. So many bikes are simply variations on a theme, but Trek has brought genuinely new tech first to the Domane and now to the Madone. This bike is a clear 9 for performance.

Unfortunately, all that tech adds to the price and it'll take a while to trickle down to more affordable levels.

Hey, can I ask you the saddle height on this 58 cm frame ? Can't figure out how a 58cm would look like with my 78,8cm saddle height (i hesitate between 56 and 58 on a H1 frame)

This is best porn I've seen in a while.

I just wish it came at a smidgeon of the price.

Any mechanics out there tell me whether they could get Campag EPS to "work" on this frame?

Not keen on the colour.

I think it's a lovely looking bike, and hats off to Trek for trying to do something genuinely interesting. In the flesh it's a striking looking ride. Possibly a tad overengineered, but I look forward to the one they'll release in a couple of years that's going to be simpler and cheaper.

So, is the Domane going to go then? Or will I just be sold to sportivistes??

People keep refering to new tech, but those brakes are essentially a rework of Campag Delta. Not really trying to dis Trek, but there's a whole lot of marketing going on here...

Don't worry! Domane is definitely not going anywhere. The Madone is a very different platform to suit a different rider type. Although it has the IsoSpeed, it's not as compliant as the Domane.

We now have three different bikes to match the needs of different riders. Some want to maximise comfort without sacrificing performance. That's Domane. Some want to be as aero as possible (and still comfortable), that's Madone. And for those who prioritise weight, that's Emonda.

slightly off topic, but are there (imminent) plans to add the Domaine Series 6 disc to the Project One custom builder or release it as a frameset?

I have a domane and can confirm that the Isospeed decoupler really works.

I have only the original 2.0 version with steel frame, but it's the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden - better than my specialized Roubaix Expert which cost well over twice as much.

Not been of fan of trek road bikes for a while - but this is nice!

Lovely colour, horrendous looks.

The iso speed seat post on this is hideously over engineered...3 posts going on there.. Ergo post by LOOK does it better for over a decade....

And no matter what instructions they give you for travel it will be a prick to take apart and reassemble... high end TT bike users have found that and the manufacturers are starting to address it..

and whilst running a new inner cable will be straight forward, replacing the outers will be a shocker... for the home wrench just time consuming, for those using shops bloody expensive...

I'm fine with all of this, top end tech takes more effort and money to run.. but lets not pretend its not the case...

Only two posts. The seat mast is connected to the the same tube that runs down the inside of the aero tube. This inner post is the IsoSpeed.

Travel is not nearly as difficult as with a bike like the Speed Concept. Providing that the bike is assembled properly, there will be enough inner cable and housing to allow the bars to be removed from the stack, and turned sideways.

Experience mechanics can build a complete Madone in around an hour to an hour and a half, once they've followed the manual on the first ones they build, so changing cables isn't as difficult as it might seem.

Ultimately, this bike isn't more or less difficult to build that most others. It's just different, and thus requires mechanics to read the manual and follow it to the letter a few times, and once they've done that it will be pretty seamless to build.

Also, even with the IsoSpeed tube, the complete bike weight of those being used by Trek Factory Racing is 6.9kg.

I really like it, though I think it looks better in the darker shades.

And I don't you can compare any of the major brands top end offerings price-wise with Canyon (or any other direct sales brand).

I think this is a really interesting bike, and particularly like all the integration. They've produced a number of original, distinctive features that do differentiate it. I'm sure some of these features filter down eventually, but I think £3,350 for a frameset is about what we'd all expect. Isn't it?

I've got a 5 series madone and just love the way it rides, particularly going downhill.

I admire the degree of innovation and I am slowly falling in love with the Madone although being a Specialized Venge rider. What could have been the motivation behind going through all the pain and designing such a new brake combo, especially when considering that disc brakes are about to make it to the peloton? Can anybody tell?

It's not even got a back light!

So I just have to comment here to win one, right?

Just sold a Domane (brilliant bike) and started racing this year so looking for a top spec race frame for 2016. I'm Treks target market-sold on the isospeed. Am I buying a Madone.....NOPE!

That price is RIDICULOUS. £4300 for the frame the pro's race.

Canyon Ultimate SLX for me (a frame the pro's race) £1600.

The Aeroad may be a better comparison (more aero) but is only £500 more and that includes the aero bar/stem.

Ginsterdrz wrote: That price is RIDICULOUS. £4300 for the frame the pro's race.

You can get a 9 Series Madone in Project One, with full Ultegra and aero wheels for around £5300. That can go lower still if you use RXL wheels instead of Aura wheels. Project One will go live for the Madone on Thursday, so you can play around with configurations yourself.

Just out of curiousity, what do you think would be a reasonable price for something that has so much new tech on it?

TrekBikesUK wrote: Just out of curiousity, what do you think would be a reasonable price for something that has so much new tech on it?

new tech is surely part and parcel of improving /updating bike models; some years see a bigger change than others, sometimes incremental, sometimes more substantial. While Trek has reduced prices on many 2016 bikes, I'm surprised to see such a price hike on the new top Madone compared to the previous top end 7.9 frameset which is currently listed at £3000 on your website.

Trek Project One Ultimate – Creating the $ 25,000 Dream Bike

what does trek project one mean

What’s the difference between buying a $ 25,000 bike and a $ 2,000 bike? We travelled to the US to visit Trek Bicycles and find out how the billion-dollar company has brought a revolutionary concept of individualism and craftsmanship to the ultra high-end market. With an exclusive insight into the new superlative of luxury: The Trek Project One Ultimate program – the $ 25,000 bike.

what does trek project one mean

Trek’s headquarters in Waterloo, Wisconsin are where our Project One experience begins. Walking around its factory and design facilities the messages that are imprinted on the walls make it all feel a bit Silicon Valley. Signs quoting Steve Jobs’ 10th commandment: “Prototype to the extreme”, are there encouraging employees to step out of everyday thinking and challenge average.

  Raised on rocket science.

The building’s atrium is divided into sections which visually project the company principles. “Born in a barn”, an ode to where the very first Trek bikes were made; “raised on rocket science” which depicts how since Trek’s inception in 1976, co-founders Dick Burke and Bevil Hogg have been constantly looking for ways to innovate and revolutionise their products. An endeavour that’s ranged from the first introduction of carbon into their frames in 1991 with the Trek 2500, to the current Project One programme. A tour through the factory sheds light on Trek’s carbon manufacturing process, along with the painting, assembling, test labs and race shop giving insight into how high Trek’s standards are – especially when building bikes for cycling’s top elite athletes. At this high-tech facility painting robots busily hum away alongside artists that hand paint the finishing touches, a highlight graphic designer Micah Moran made sure wasn’t missed.

Eliminating the Industry Status Quo – Project One

When you’re a company whose revenue hits the $1bn mark, quite quickly you’re stereotyped as being enslaved by economies of scale. This is where Trek Project One goes against the grain. Why is it that in the cycling industry the more you spend on a bike the less choice you seem to have? For most other industries it’s the reverse. So why have we come to accept that if we pay €10,000 we have less options on colour, parts, and wheelsets than with a €2,000 bike? Project One represents Trek’s unwillingness to rest upon its laurels and let others trailblaze the way; it’s the brand’s way of honouring the unique individual. Tell the laws of mediocre this isn’t right – that a multinational company can still do customisation.

what does trek project one mean

The Project One online system allows you to choose from a range of models, not only road but off-road too. Easy to navigate, Trek have made choosing a custom bike as uncomplicated as choosing a suit from your favourite online retailer. With hundreds of different preset paint designs that vary in price depending on complexity, Trek offer a choice that ranges from classic to idiosyncratic. From animal print to green tinged flames curling around top tubes, it’s obvious the designers have fun. So much so they’re willing to sign their names onto your frame just to let you know it was a job done with care.

what does trek project one mean

Not prepared to stop at just giving you free rein on your paint job, Project One lets you decide on componentry such as wheels, groupset, saddle. Darn! They even let you become that awkward customer and dictate which cable housing you want your machine to have. Project One starts at € 500 more than the base price of the model you are customising, with the online calculator providing an easy guide of how much each bit of customisation is going to cost. The biggest surprise for us was that the current lead time is only two weeks. To Trek customisation shouldn’t mean having to wait a lifetime, as is often the case with other makers.

what does trek project one mean

If you can dream it, we can make it reality — even if that means developing a new paint specifically for your frame.

what does trek project one mean

Then after the Trek designers have collaboratively assembled your piece of art, if you really want to get all ceremonial about it, you can travel to the Wisconsin HQ for a grand unveiling and have your debut ride out with them on the Trek team lunchtime ride.

Trek Project One Ultimate – as unique as a fingerprint

If the Project One experience blows your mind we’ll give you some perspective. Say Project One is akin to fine dining at a Michelin starred restaurant, then Ultimate is that Michelin experience with a world-class chef, but joining them in their own kitchen. Starting at $ 25,000 Trek Project One Ultimate is the superlative of luxury.

Here this $ 25,000 dream adventure takes you on a journey of self-discovery. Starting in Wisconsin, you receive a bike fitting that details every conceivable body measurement to ensure your handmade, custom built frame fits you to perfection with the Trek Precision Fit.

Then your allocated personal designer sets out to know your story, what is it that makes you tick. Through a process of listening to everything you say – what you lust for, what you detest, what cycling means to you, a moodboard is created. This is the artist’s bloodline that helps them interpret and create the bike you want…even if they don’t have it. Well, within reason.

You still have to choose one of Trek’s models, but that’s really where the limitations on your creativity stop, as long as it complies with Trek’s safety standards – leopard print rocket boosters probably won’t make the cut.

what does trek project one mean

With most frames taking a minimum of 13 hours for the paint job, Trek’s craftsmanship is market leading. Micah, the head graphic designer explained: “If you can dream it, we can make it reality — even if that means developing a new paint specifically for your frame.” One of the first Project One Ultimate clients, Boeing’s CEO, was set on having the Dreamliner aeroplane colours as a part of the design. This took Trek down a 20 hour colour mixing journey to perfectly match the pantones. It’s one of many stories that back up their self-confession of being obsessed to the point of absurdity.

what does trek project one mean

Dreams Can Come True

A once-in-a-lifetime bike that conveys your story: the team at Trek live by their founder’s motto of ‘Raised on rocket science.’ The limits of possibility are continually being stretched. The descriptions of ‘fast and expensive’ don’t suffice these days when it comes to owning a premium bike. Trek’s Project One and Project One Ultimate approaches are able to instil a desire in the bike industry to shake up the status quo as well as meet – no, exceed – today’s ever increasing demand for custom bikes. Whether you’re in the market for a 2,000 euro or a 25,000 euro bike; your dream bike is about more than just performance, milligrams and rigidity. Your bike has to tell your story and disclose more about you than your passport does. If you’ve got enough money in the bank then Trek can definitely help you here.

Trek Get Super Snazzy with New Custom Options – Project One

Trek’s Project One program is a way to customise a Trek build with options of spec and paint. And they’ve just added a few amazing options into the mix we think they are pretty wild, perhaps too wild, or just the right amount of wild?

The official word from Trek’s press release here:

Trek announced a refresh of its Project One custom bike program today, introducing six new paint schemes and an all-new catalogue of premium spec and drive train options.

what does trek project one mean

This expansion of the programme adds even more depth to Trek’s custom offering, giving riders everywhere more ways to create a custom bike they’ll love.

Three of the new paint schemes (Amplified Alchemy, Sweet Gold Leaf and Holographic Diamond Flake) are additions to the premium Project One ICON Series of bespoke designs filled with texture, depth and mood.

Two of the remaining new paint schemes (Abstract and Palmarès) are part of an all-new Designer Series, a personal collection that comes directly from designers on Trek’s Waterloo-based team.

Trek also added an all-new Splatter Fade paint scheme to the Project One mix, which pairs modern tech and classic throwback style. Splatter Fade is currently only available on Project One mountain bikes.

what does trek project one mean

Additionally, Trek revamped its spec and drive train options to offer new SRAM Force eTap AXS on select road platforms, the all-new Aeolus RSL Bar/Stem on Émonda and Madone, new saddle options, and new Aeolus Elite, Pro and RSL wheels.

For Project One mountain bikes, Trek added all-new SRAM Eagle drive trains and new RockShox and FOX suspension on all platforms, along with new Line carbon wheel, saddle and tyre options.

what does trek project one mean

Project One gives riders complete control over the design of their dream road, mountain or triathlon – and there are more options today than ever before.

The new paint schemes and parts options are available immediately through Trek’s wide network of global retail partners and online at trekbikes.com in select markets.

Trek fuel ex 29 – 9.8 project one, for 2017, the latest version of trek’s long running fuel ex model is stiffer, lighter, and lower slung than the previous model. with 130mm of travel on the 29 inch wheel frame it’s only 10mm short of last year’s remedy 29..

The Fuel EX is Trek’s mid travel 29er and also comes as a ’27 Plus’ option. If you want more travel then the recently launched Slash 29 will give you all you need…

Anyway, one spin and you realise the angles, weight and tightness add up to make this Trek a trail hammering speed machine. It’s lightweight, incredibly well built and so beautifully constructed. With a Fox 34 leading the charge, this Fuel EX is a fine example of a trail bike, which can now be pushed into tough terrain, yet never lacking the urgency or punch of a shorter travel machine. Your average speed has just increased, a bike with verve and on a similar wavelength to the  Intense Primer.

what does trek project one mean

Trek have been working with carbon for many years and a recent trip to their Wiscon HQ highlighted the quality and consistency in their frames. With good dimensions and a wider range of frame sizes than many brands, you should get a great fit, with only the tallest of riders needing a larger size than 21.5”.

what does trek project one mean

This Fuel EX is packed with Trek’s latest features and technology – The integrated bump stop or “knock block” headset adds frame defence and allow a stiffer ‘Straight shot’ down tube. 1x specific stays, carbon armour, Re:aktiv rear shock (a Trek/Fox collaboration on this bike) and the ABP (Active Braking Pivot) all show thorough attention to detail with no area being overlooked or compromised. With Trek’s Mino-link adjustment system now in place on the Fuel EX you are able to adjust between a high and low geometry setting. With a bottom bracket height of 335mm in the low position we left it there as we felt this was perfect and it sits well with the 67 degree head angle.

‘It’s a bike with fire in its belly this one, and it delivers in heaps in terms of quick drive through the crank, a superb poise in corners and a good balance on descents and faster steeper terrain’

Trek’s unique Project One programme lets you custom spec your Fuel Ex 9.8 or 9.9 on their website and purchase it through one of their P1 authorised dealers. Paint and decal colour choice is huge – with thousands of combinations available, you’ll be riding a ‘one off’ version of the bike and built to your spec.

what does trek project one mean

The kit on this 9.8 model features a 2x Shimano transmission for example but you have the option of both SRAM or XT in single ring set-ups or even electronic XT Di2 . Prefer a RockShox Pike or a Fox 34 up front? Your choice, even down to the colour of the graphics… DT Swiss XMC1200 wheels are a good choice – light, fast rolling and stiff enough with Boost hub spacing front and rear. But you may well stay with Trek’s new Bontrager Line option. Bontrager kit finishes the bike by default and although we didn’t take a shine to the shape of the handlebar, we were impressed with both the action and the ergonomics of their new Drop Line dropper seatpost.

A well finished trail bike with incredible attention to detail (and with plenty of custom options if you plump for the Project One option), but how does it ride?

what does trek project one mean

This 2017 incarnation of the Fuel EX has an excellent feel to it, arguably on the stiffer end of the spectrum but it needs it, for it’s a bike that will be (and should be…) ridden at speed. Trek has built a genuinely quick and balanced trail bike here, one that is bang up to date in angles and ride dynamic. This latest take is not just about performance though – as a complete package it’s hard to fault. This carbon Fuel EX is a great example of a trail bike where the quality, design and finish reflect the price tag.

Trek Rail ICON: Build your dream bike with the Trek Project One programme

what does trek project one mean

When Trek approached us with the offer to be the world’s first and only magazine to customise a Trek Rail, there was no doubt in our minds that this was a “hell-yes” opportunity. The good news is that from now on you can buy your very own customised Trek Rail as well. We’ve documented the making of the Project One ICON Rail giving you an insider look at Trek’s stateside production and, of course, we had to throw a party on our home trails with our new baby!

what does trek project one mean

Do you remember the first time? The virgin ride on your brand new bike, and the bashful unveiling in front of your mates? Each year we test around 50 to 100 eMTBs here at the magazine and, quite frankly, when faced with so many shiny, new things, it’s sometimes hard not to get blasé. This wasn’t the case with our customized Rail though – far from it. There’d been no shortage of anticipation building when we worked ourselves through the Project One configurator, so by the time the first ride rolled around, we were chomping at the teeth with excitement. Would it live up to expectations?

One-off: The idea behind Project One

How much patience do you have when it comes to Amazon orders? Are you a Prime subscriber with no time to waste? A product’s emotional value and our relationships to brands are becoming less of a thing due to society’s rampant consumerism and our ever-growing demand for next-day-delivery and free-return-franticness. With so many things that can be replaced or exchanged, how often do we ever end up waiting more than 24 hours between ordering and receiving our goods?

For a bike brand with a turnover somewhere around a billion, it’s not inconceivable to imagine that Trek are all about efficiency and time-saving measures. But that’s exactly where Project One goes against the tide. By giving you the opportunity to spec your own bike and customise it almost exactly as you please, Trek have succeeded in re-strengthening the bonds between bike and rider, rider and brand, anticipation and excitement. It’s very different to clicking “order now” on Amazon.

Trek wondered why the bike industry had turned into a place where the more you paid, the fewer choices you often had. It seemed odd to them; and if the opposite approach worked in virtually every other industry, why couldn’t they shake up the world of cycling? Why didn’t consumers revolt against the norm, in which paying 10,0000 € for a bike instead of 2,000 € meant fewer colour choices and little to no flexibility when it comes to components? Project One is Trek’s answer to the growing cries for custom bikes – and it is no longer limited to carbon road and mountain bikes.

what does trek project one mean

The Trek Rail is the brand’s first eMTB to be made available in Project One. The options for customisation apply to spec and colourways, and there are various tiers: Project One, Project One ICON and Project One Ultimate (bikes in this category may end up costing a whopping € 25,000).

If you got in trouble for coloring on the walls as a kid , then you’ll love our Project One custom bike program. – Trek

While Project One Ultimate is intended to appeal to individuals who truly demand the most niche product in which no ask is too big, we decided to go for the more “moderate” approach. The Project One ICON scheme has Trek’s new ICON frame finish at its core, with illustrious colours like Cosmos, Brushed Liquid Metal, Prismatic Pearl, Refliptive, Black Gold or Molten Marble swirling around our heads. Whichever you pick, #bikeporn is a given. The ICON designs have a distinctive texture, depth and vibe – one which screams “made by hand”.

Producing our custom Trek Rail

All Project One bikes are produced at Trek’s HQ in Waterloo, Wisconsin and those who select to collect their bike in person will get an invite into the hallowed turf, with a VIP tour, a chat with the development team, the Trek Precision Fit experience, and a lunch ride on the company’s private trails ( click here to read our first ride review of the Trek Rail 9.8 ). Geographical restrictions meant that we asked for the bike to be delivered to our HQ in Stuttgart, Germany, but keep reading to see where the Project One production takes place:

what does trek project one mean

Trek’s founding principle is emblazoned in the entrance hall at the HQ: ‘Born in a barn’, a homage to the brand’s earliest days where the five-strong team first began. ‘Raised on rocket science’, another slogan, refers to founders Dick Burke and Bevil Hogg’s continual pursuit of progress since 1976 and their efforts to constantly set new benchmarks. There’s a little exhibition with the company’s highlights, including their first carbon frame in 1991, the Trek 2500, and the introduction of the current Project One.

what does trek project one mean

Where the magic happens – the finishing touches to each frame takes place in the heart of the HQ. It’s impressive to observe and this clearly isn’t mechanised mass production; there’s a surgical precision to the artisanal process of the paint job. But before the bikes land here, the carbon frames need to be prepared and the colours need to be mixed.

what does trek project one mean

As a testament to the hard work invested in each Project One bike, Trek make sure that each ICON and Ultimate frame bears the signature of the staff member who’s skilful touch created it.

Trek Rail – Project One ICON: prices, options and availability

The Trek Rail is only available for Project One ICON and Ultimate customisation, unlike Trek’s road bikes and non-motorized mountain bikes. For an ICON model, you can expect to pay about € 1,000 extra on top of the standard model price. Thanks to the online calculator you can easily keep track of how much each bit of customisation will cost you.

what does trek project one mean

In terms of componentry, the customisation options are currently limited to a few drivetrain options and select components. Time your order well: the lead time could be as short as two weeks, but this fluctuates in the high season. We received our Rail right on time to enjoy the final dwindling rays of autumn.

You can get started straight away at projectone.trekbikes.com and configure your own bike.

Today is time for his local trails to be knighted, and that requires his majesty to be aboard the finest equipment in fitting E-MOUNTAINBIKE style: Wild, disruptive, very diverse, and pretty damn cool. Take a look for yourself.

what does trek project one mean

Who wouldn’t go mad for a bike that stands out as much as this one? Bling bling is one thing, but recognising the craft within a bike is something else entirely. And knowing that you’ve helped determine its course through the customisation takes your relationship to the next level. People say that your first time is unlikely to go without a hitch, but in this case, we’d argue the opposite.

Trek Unveils New Project One Custom Build Program

what does trek project one mean

Trek’s New & Improved Project One Program Is Live If anyone was expecting to see a revolutionary new road bike coming out of Trek for 2009, they would’ve been pretty disappointed. Last year was the year that Trek introduced the all-new road bike (albeit with the same old Madone name) and while Trek seems committed to faster model intro’s than that which preceded the last roll-out (a four year span between new & old models), for 2009 their bigger effort is the launch of their revamped and greatly expanded Project One custom build program. Whereas in the past the P1 program was mostly a paint personalization program, it is now a much more aggressive program that not only lets the consumer pick and choose frame colors, but parts too, and Trek makes the case they mean all the parts (though still within a given component menu). If you have been dreaming about getting a green 6.9 Madone with red cable housing and a lower-end Shimano Ultegra SL cranks, no worries. An Orange TTX with orange color accents on your Bontrager wheels, white cable housing and Sram Red components, no problem. Trek also included a menu of Women’s Specific Design  paint schemes (above) for women riders as well. Best of all, Trek guarantees that from the time you order the bike through your local Trek dealer, it will be built and shipped to you with seven days. It’s a tall order to be sure and while many dealers were really excited about the new program, there was also some skepticism that it could be pulled off. Trek hosted a special launch of their new Project One program with a few days of riding editor spec’d bikes in Europe. Lacking any truly garish combination of colors on the RBA bike, it’s safe to assume that Brad got to make the order! A sweet Madone 6.9 with a red/black/white color combo with Bontrager wheels is what he came up with and as we speak he’s probably up in Santa Barbara right now showing it off on Main Street. While there are plenty cool bikes on the market for you to consider, there is no other program that offers this level of customer influence on a building a production bike. To get the process going, Trek has launched a new Project One web site where you can see your bike built in front of your eyes while tracking the price. This is a unique offering that will hopefully bring a new level of individual personality to the group ride. Click Here to check it out.   Zap

  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Trek Project One to cover mountain bikes

Customization program to include three Superfly and Fuel EX models

James Huang/Future Publishing

what does trek project one mean

After launching more than a decade ago, Trek's Project One customization program has finally added mountain bikes to its range. Just three models are included for now, but it's a move that's long overdue and a sign of more options to come in the future.

Initially, only the Superfly 9.9 SL hardtail, Superfly FS 9.9 SL cross-country full-suspension bike, and Fuel EX 29 9.9 trail bikes will be covered. Either way, the list of options is impressive and costs vary accordingly.

"Customization is what the consumer is getting used," said Trek senior product manager John Riley, "and it's what they're expecting when they're making that kind of purchase."

Project One might not be fully custom in terms of paint colors and graphic schemes (you can only select from nine graphics options and a discrete – though generous – selection of hues) but there's more than enough flexibility to keep most buyers satisfied. This includes nine rather bold new options in addition to the ones already on the palette: Viper Red, Dnister Black, Hot Grape, Liquid Green, Liquid Red, Lucky Green, Nysa Blue, Powder Blue, Fastback Orange, and Flamingo Pink.

How wild do you want to get with the paint?

As on the road and time trial/triathlon side of Project One, the breadth of component options is also impressively generous, including drivetrain, brakes, bottom bracket, rear shock remotes, fork, headset, saddle, wheels, handlebar, grips, tires, seatpost, and stem. Several of those parts have additional sizing options as well.

While Trek's Project One mountain bike options are rather limited for now, we wouldn't be surprised to see other high-end options such as the Remedy 9.9 and Session 9.9 added shortly. Riley suggested that the range of models is certainly poised to grow: "This is just the beginning," he said.

You can send the spec to a local Project One dealer to get the order process rolling

Can’t Find Eclipse Glasses? Here’s What to Do.

You can watch a projection of the eclipse using some common household items.

  • Share full article

Two people kneel near an open cardboard box that they’ve fashioned into a projector for viewing an eclipse.

By Katrina Miller

Follow our live updates on the total solar eclipse .

Reliable paper-framed glasses are by far the most popular option for safely watching the total solar eclipse on Monday. But they’ve gotten more difficult to find in some places ahead of the event.

If you’ve checked everywhere — your local planetarium, public library and even online — fear not: There is still a way to watch the eclipse safely, using items around the house. Here are a few options.

Use your hands

Palms up, position one hand over the other at a 90-degree angle. Open your fingers slightly in a waffle pattern, and allow sunlight to stream through the spaces onto the ground, or another surface. During the eclipse, you will see a projection of the moon obscuring the surface of the sun.

This method works with anything with holes, such as a straw hat, a strainer, a cheese grater or even a perforated spoon. You will also notice this effect when light from the partially eclipsed sun streams through leaves on a tree.

Set up a cardstock screen

For this option, you need a couple of white index cards or two sheets of cardstock paper. First, punch a small hole in the middle of one of the cards using a thumbtack or a pin.

Then, facing away from the sun, allow light to stream through this pinhole. Position the second card underneath to function as a screen. Adjust the spacing between the two cards to make the projection of the sun larger or smaller.

Make a box projector

If you’re up for a bit of crafting, you can make a more sophisticated pinhole projector . Start with a cardboard box — empty cereal boxes are often used, but you can use a larger box, too. You’ll also need scissors, white paper, tape, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack.

Cut the piece of paper to fit the inside bottom of the cardboard box to act as a screen. Use tape to hold it in place.

On the top of the box, cut two rectangular holes on either side. (The middle should be left intact — you can use tape to secure this if needed.)

Tape a piece of aluminum foil over one of the rectangular cutouts. Punch a tiny hole in the middle of the foil with the tack or pin. The other cutout will serve as a view hole.

With your back to the sun, position the foil side of the box over your shoulder, letting light stream through the pinhole. An image of the sun will project onto the screen at the bottom of the box, which you can see through the view hole. A bigger box will create a bigger image.

Enjoy the show through any of these makeshift pinholes. And remember, during totality, you can view the sun directly with your naked eye. But you should stop looking at the sun as soon as it reappears.

What is Eid al-Fitr? 6 questions about the holiday and how Muslims celebrate it, answered

By Ken Chitwood

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 8:03 AM EDT / The Conversation

Ken Chitwood  is a senior research fellow, Muslim Philanthropy Initiative at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis and journalist-fellow at the Dornsife Center for Religion and Civic Culture at the  University of Southern California Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences .

Eid al-Fitr, one of Islam's principal festivals, will be celebrated April 9, 2024, according to the Fiqh Council of North America . At the middle of June, Muslims will celebrate Eid al-Adha. Ken Chitwood, a scholar of global Islam, explains the two Islamic festivals.

1. What is Eid?

Eid literally means a "festival" or "feast" in Arabic. There are two major eids in the Islamic calendar per year – Eid al-Fitr earlier in the year and Eid al-Adha later.

Eid al-Fitr is a three-day-long festival and is known as the "Lesser" or "Smaller Eid" when compared to Eid al-Adha, which is four days long and is known as the "Greater Eid."

2. Why is Eid celebrated twice a year?

The two Eids recognize, celebrate and recall two distinct events that are significant to the story of Islam.

Eid al-Fitr means "the feast of breaking the fast." The fast, in this instance, is Ramadan , which recalls the revealing of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad and requires Muslims to fast from sunrise to sundown for a month.

3. How do Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr features two to three days of celebrations that include special morning prayers. People greet each other with "Eid Mubarak," meaning "Blessed Eid" and with formal embraces. Sweet dishes are prepared at home and gifts are given to children and to those in need. In addition, Muslims are encouraged to forgive and seek forgiveness. Practices vary from country to country.

In many countries with large Muslim populations, Eid al-Fitr is a national holiday. Schools, offices and businesses are closed so family, friends and neighbors can enjoy the celebrations together. In the U.S. and the U.K., Muslims may request to have the day off from school or work to travel or celebrate with family and friends.

In countries like Egypt and Pakistan, Muslims decorate their homes with lanterns, twinkling lights or flowers. Special food is prepared and friends and family are invited over to celebrate.

PAKISTAN-RELIGION-ISLAM-EID

In places like Jordan, with its Muslim majority population, the days before Eid al-Fitr can see a rush at local malls and special "Ramadan markets" as people prepare to exchange gifts on Eid al-Fitr.

In Turkey and in places that were once part of the Ottoman-Turkish empire such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Azerbaijan and the Caucasus, it is also known as the, "Lesser Bayram" or "festival" in Turkish.

4. How do Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha?

The other festival, Eid al-Adha, is the "feast of the sacrifice." It comes at the end of the Hajj , an annual pilgrimage by millions of Muslims to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia that is obligatory once in a lifetime, but only for those with means.

Eid al-Adha recalls the story of how God commanded Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as a test of faith. The story, as narrated in the Quran, describes Satan's attempt to tempt Ibrahim so he would disobey God's command. Ibrahim, however, remains unmoved and informs Ismail, who is willing to be sacrificed.

But, just as Ibrahim attempts to kill his son, God intervenes and a ram is sacrificed in place of Ismail. During Eid al-Adha, Muslims slaughter an animal to remember Ibrahim's sacrifice and remind themselves of the need to submit to the will of God.

5. When are they celebrated?

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of the 10th month in the Islamic calendar.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated on the 10th day of the final month in the Islamic calendar.

The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, and dates are calculated based on lunar phases. Since the Islamic calendar year is shorter than the solar Gregorian calendar year by 10 to 12 days, the dates for Ramadan and Eid on the Gregorian calendar can vary year by year.

6. What is the spiritual meaning of Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr, as it follows the fasting of Ramadan, is also seen as a spiritual celebration of Allah's provision of strength and endurance.

Amid the reflection and rejoicing, Eid al-Fitr is a time for charity, known as Zakat al-Fitr. Eid is meant to be a time of joy and blessing for the entire Muslim community and a time for distributing one's wealth.

Charity to the poor is a highly emphasized value in Islam. The Quran says ,

"Believe in Allah and his messenger, and give charity out of the (substance) that Allah has made you heirs of. For those of you who believe and give charity – for them is a great reward."

Star trek: discovery season 5, episode 1 ending & tng treasure explained.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere dropped a bombshell that ties all the way back to Star Trek: The Next Generation. We break it down.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 1 - "Red Directive"

  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5 reveals a bombshell treasure hunt that ties back to Star Trek: TNG "The Chase."
  • Mysterious villains Moll and L'ak create chaos, leaving behind a trail of destruction on Kumal.
  • Captain Saru to become a Federation Ambassador, leading to the first Kelpien-Vulcan wedding in Star Trek history.

The ending of Star Trek: Discovery 's exhilarating season 5 premiere dropped a jaw-dropping bombshell that the treasure Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is hunting for comes from Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 20, "The Chase." Written by Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Discovery 's season 5 premiere, "Red Directive," introduces three new major characters, the villains Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis), and Starfleet Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), and sets up Discovery season 5 as a sequel to the classic TNG episode about who created humanoid life in the galaxy - and how .

Moll and L'ak escaped the clutches of Captain Burnham, Captain Rayner, and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) on the desert world of Q'Mau. After a synthetic merchant named Fred (J. Adam Brown) opened a Romulan puzzle box Moll and L'ak stole from an 800-year-old Romulan starship , Fred double-crossed Moll and L'ak and was killed by the renegade lovers. L'ak and Moll then detonated an explosive in the mountains, creating an avalanche. The combined shields of the USS Discovery and the USS Antares protected the people of Kumal, but Moll and L'ak escaped with the Romulans' journal. However, Captain Burnham knows more than the rogues do about the treasure thanks to Discovery's crew. And, as Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) said, the answers are wild.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Everything We Know

Star trek: discovery season 5's treasure & progenitors explained, who were the progenitors in star trek: tng's "the chase".

"The greatest treasure in the known galaxy" in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the technology Ancient Humanoids used to create sentient humanoid life. A hologram of an Ancient Humanoid (Salome Jens) was encountered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), members of the USS Enterprise-D crew, as well as a group of Romulans, Klingons, and Cardassians in Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "The Chase". The Ancient Humanoid revealed that her long-dead race seeded the galaxy billions of years ago to create humanoid life forms in their image, and that the humanoid species in Star Trek 's galaxy share a common ancestry.

"The Chase" was Star Trek: The Next Generation 's attempt to explain why so many aliens in Star Trek are essentially humans with bumpy foreheads and physical variations.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere reveals that the United Federation of Planets and Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) dubbed the Ancient Humanoids "The Progenitors". 800 years ago, a Romulan scientist named Dr. Vellek (Michael Copeman) found and hid the Progenitors' technology, which can literally create life and would be catastrophic if it fell into the wrong hands . However, Moll and L'ak (and, logically, whoever hired them) learned about the Progenitors' technology. The ability to create, and possibly destroy, humanoid species is an existential threat to the galaxy, which is why the Federation needs Captain Burnham to find it first.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere, President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) said the Tholian Republic and the Breen Imperium are rising, and they could be looking for the Progenitors' technology.

Moll & L'ak Keep Escaping, But Who Are They?

Star trek: discovery's new villains are a mystery..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's version of Bonnie and Clyde, the villainous Moll and L'ak are mysterious former couriers who have had several past encounters with Captain Rayner of the USS Antares. Moll is human but L'ak is an unknown species with no known information in the Federation database. They are also hired guns, so they must have an employer yet to be revealed.

While little is revealed about Moll and L'ak, what is clear is they are lovers with deep affection for each other. Cleveland Booker doesn't know Moll and L'ak from his years as a courier, but he could tell by the way they escaped from the USS Discovery and USS Antares that L'ak and Moll are in love and are having fun together. In a way, Moll and L'ak are an echo of what Book and Michael Burnham were like when they were couriers traveling the galaxy together in the year before the USS Discovery arrived in the 32nd century.

Saru Will Become A Federation Ambassador & Marry T'Rina

Wedding bells are coming to star trek: discovery..

Captain Saru accepts Federation President Laira Rillak's (Chelah Horsdal) offer to become a Federation Ambassador. Saru has been serving as First Officer of the USS Discovery despite his higher rank since Star Trek: Discovery season 4, but being Captain Burnham's Number One is not really a role that utilizes the Kelpien's skills and potential. Saru also chose to leave Discovery and become an Ambassador to be closer to his love, President T'Rina.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will soon have the first Kelpien-Vulcan wedding and the first wedding between 2 major Star Trek characters in 22 years.

Originally, T'Rina told Saru not to factor her into his decision to take the Ambassador position, but she actually wanted Saru to leave Discovery, which would allow them to spend more time together. And T'rina went a step further and proposed to Saru in a very Vulcan-like fashion, suggesting they "codify our mutual agreement in a more official capacity". Saru seemed to say yes, which means Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will soon have the first Kelpien-Vulcan wedding and the first wedding between 2 major Star Trek characters in 22 years since Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) married Deanna Tro i (Marina Sirtis) in Star Trek: Nemesis.

Burnham & Book Are Still Broken Up

They should have called each other..

Star Trek: Discovery 's top love story, Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker , didn't quite heat up in season 5's premiere. Burnham and Book have been separated (but with no hard feelings) ever since Book commenced his penance for the Federation after breaking multiple laws to destroy the Dark Matter Anomaly in Star Trek: Discovery season 4. Burnham turned to Book for his courier expertise to help her catch Moll and L'ak , and if she's honest, because she wanted to see Book again.

Michael and Book agreed not to restart their relationship.

Book remains penitent and is committed to righting his wrongs with the Federation and with Michael, but there is now an understandable awkwardness between them. Book has a role to play on the USS Discovery as long as Moll and L'ak are at large , but on Kumal, Michael and Book agreed not to restart their relationship. However, this isn't the end of Burnham and Booker's love story, and it's hard to imagine they won't get back together at some point in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Captain Rayner Is No Fan Of Burnham

What is rayner's problem.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 introduced Callum Keith Rennie's Captain Rayner of the USS Antares as a new series regular character, and he brings a new dynamic to the show. Gruff, impatient, and no-nonsense, Rayner evokes previous hardliner Star Trek Captains like Captain Edward Jellico (Ronny Cox) in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Rayner is also resentful of Captain Burnham for some reason , and he finds humor in mocking Michael, asserting his command authority, and countermanding her orders.

Rayner seems jealous of the USS Discovery's spore drive, and he mentions his displeasure that he doesn't have a Pathway Drive on the USS Antares.

Although it wasn't mentioned or factored into Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere, Captain Rayner is a Kellerun , a species first introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2's "Armageddon Game". Rayner's interest in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is fulfilling his Red Directive mission objective, which is retrieving the treasure, as well as capturing Moll and L'ak, whom he has tangled with before. There is plenty more to learn about Captain Rayner in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Star Trek: Discovery Now Has Their Own Data

Fred could be good for commander paul stamets..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere introduced Fred, a Soong-type synthetic who is a merchant and fence on the planet Q'Mau. Fred obviously evokes the most famous Soong android, Data (Brent Spiner), which is another link between Star Trek: Discovery season 5 and Star Trek: The Next Generation , L'ak and Moll killed Fred after he double-crossed them, but after Fred's body was beamed onto the USS Discovery's medical bay, Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) determined from his serial number, AS-7502Y, that Fred was built from the design of Dr. Altan Inigo Soong (Brent Spiner) from Star Trek: Picard .

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere, Stamets lamented the Federation's scuttling the spore drive program in favor of the Pathway Drive . Although Fred was "killed", it's possible Stamets and his husband, Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), can reactivate Fred. The 600-plus-year-old android may contain other secrets and answer many questions about events between Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery 's era. There are intriguing possibilities for Fred in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 , and it would be odd if Fred really is dead after his lone appearance.

The USS Discovery is now "one of a kind" since it has the only working spore drive in existence.

The Next Clue In Discovery's Treasure Hunt

Discovery is going to a planet with twin moons..

The USS Discovery's next stop on the treasure hunt in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 2, "Under the Twin Moons," is Lyrek, a planet in the Vileen system, on the outer sector of the Beta Quadrant, that has 3 moons, 2 of which move in perfect sync. Captain Burnham figured this out after seeing images of Dr. Vellek's Romulan diary pages retrieved from Fred's database. One of the pages had a circular image which could be a literal treasure map, and the clues point to the Vileen system and the planet with twin moons . What Burnham will find on Lyrek remains to be seen in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 2, but the chase is on to answer one of the biggest questions left behind by Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is streaming on Paramount+

Jolanda Neff’s World Championships Supercaliber

Jolanda wanted her bike for World Championships to invoke tranquillity: mountain mist, bamboo, ethereal skies. Senior Trek mountain bike designer, Katy Steudel, took those suggestions from the Olympic champ and let her imagination soar. The result is a stunning Supercaliber that features Japanese woodblock print-inspired bamboo with wispy dark mist at the bottom that transitions to airy and bright cumulus puffs and a sun-catching chroma sky.

Ellen van Dijk’s record-smashing Speed Concept

The Cote d'Azur blue line is iconic in every velodrome. It distinguishes the boundaries of the track where riders are allowed to race – stray from your path and risk disqualification. When Ellen van Dijk took on the challenge of breaking the UCI World Hour Record, she opted for a bike that was not only ultra-fast but also paid homage to this incredible undertaking. Ellen's customised Speed Concept brings forward the legendary Cote d'Azur blue paint and pairs it with graphics on the top tube that read 'Hold the Line', an indicator and reminder for Ellen to hold the bike steady lap after lap. While this Project One Ultimate Speed Concept smashed the Hour Record, you can build your own ultra-fast, customised Speed Concept in Project One Ultimate for $25,000.

Inspired by a love of rally racing, he’s designed a handful of Trek Sessions that give a nod to the car world, and to switch up his themes, his 2022 custom single-crown Session paid tribute to the unsung heroes of mountain biking – trail builders.

Robbie McEwen’s Ultimate Madone

When Robbie started dreaming up his Ultimate Madone, he had one goal – to match the exact shade of green from his Tour de France jerseys. But after partnering with master designer, Micah Moran, Robbie’s bike became so much more. A customised logo was crafted from a 'one brushstroke' concept, bringing both Robbie’s personality and decorated cycling career to life this bold and dramatic paint scheme.

Amity Rockwell’s groovy Checkpoint

Repping the Bay Area, Amity wanted to bring her mother’s late- 50s - early-60s San Francisco vibes to life on her Ultimate Checkpoint. Influenced by Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin, her Summer of Love gravel ride is painted with psychedelic flair and an icon of Sutro Tower – the enormous radio tower that overlooks San Francisco.

Bo Jackson’s Domane+

Bo Jackson has a decorated history in sports, but his professional baseball and football days aren’t what come to life in his Ultimate Domane+. Instead, Bo pays homage to all those who lost their lives in the tornado outbreaks of 2011 and 2019 – a cause he has raised over US $1.5 million for at his annual Bo Bikes Bama charity ride.

Casey Brown’s Wild-West Session

When Casey designed her Session for Red Bull Formation, she wanted it “to look nice in the desert”. Senior mountain bike graphic designer, Katy Steudel, knew just what to do. She gave the bike its wild-west flair with inspiration pulled from vintage ink, with rattle snakes, wild horses and flowers that come together on this absolute ripper.

Shimano’s pursuit of perfection

In celebration of 100 years of excellence, the Project One team partnered with Shimano to craft a spectacular Émonda that honours the company’s journey to greatness. The design is inspired by kintsugi – a form of artistic pottery repair that bonds cracks and breaks together with precious metals for an end product that highlights its imperfections. It reminds us that true beauty lies within the challenges we face and our growth as we overcome them.

United in Gravel with Shimano

Built to live, breathe and ride in unity, the Shimano United in Gravel Checkpoint SLR reflects the terrain that beckons us forward, whether our ride begins at the steps of an urban apartment complex, a distant cabin, on a dusty farm road or in the bone-dry desert. Its colourful shapes represent the diversity of all of us who ride gravel and the mountains we climb, rivers we cross and the vast sky we all ride beneath in our pursuits for peace, release and adventure.
