The Bear Cave:

The beauty of the Bear Cave’s formation has been known as one of the most beautiful in the Great Smoky Mountains . Scientists discovered a new life form in this cave that helps scientists understand how life first began underwater and then adapted to live on land. This creature is a hydra-like anemone that feeds on green algae, but it looks more like the sea with tentacles sprouting from its body instead of resembling typical amphibians or reptiles. Unfortunately, scientists have only scratched the surface when it comes to understanding these creatures, so they are still largely a mystery.

Located in Gatlinburg, Bear Cave is one of the fascinating caves. It’s not just bear droppings that make it so! The cave has been home to several new species, which are still being studied today by scientists who have made astonishing discoveries here.

Behind the scenes of Bear Cave, scientists have found green algae which feed off bat guano. Great Smoky Mountains:

The caves in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are amazing. For example, one cave near Clingmans Dome was formed by water eroding rocks during the Ice Age and closed off naturally with stone when it faced away from where rivers used to flow! Several caves within Cades Cove were formed from water erosion over time. In one corner of the cave, there is a place where many piled up rocks on top of each other, and clay was used as plaster to seal cracks in the wall so no light would enter, suggesting people had lived inside for an extended time. One such cave was initially thought to have been a bear den due to its size, but more recently, it has been discovered that this cave had human activity too!

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to 23 caves found in the Tennessee and North Carolina areas. Some include Arch Cave (opened for visitors), Bull Cave (closed due to endangered species using it as a hibernation site), Collins Maple Caves (no longer accessible because its walls were vandalized). In addition, Fairland Caverns and Frozen Niagara Caverns are operational but not regularly open due to water quality issues.

Forbidden Caverns:

One of the best-known caves in Gatlinburg is Forbidden Caverns. This cavern was accidentally discovered during the 1930s by a man who explored the mountainside to find lumber for rafting downriver.

There are several theories as to why the entrance was quickly closed off. One view is that the landowner wanted a wide-open space to experience it in its natural state without anyone else around. Another one is he received reports from visitors about strange happenings inside (bodies shown floating in water, glowing lights) and didn’t want an audience for those who were brave enough to venture through these caves.

In 1971, the Forbidden Caverns re-opened with a man who had explored it before. Unfortunately, he charged visitors $1 to go in, and he closed down ten years later due to damage from flooding during heavy rainfall. Finally, in 1989, the cavern opened again after being closed for several more years because it was damaged. Still, it was officially re-opened once and for all by another owner ten years later. Today, you can enjoy this place!

Tuckaleechee Caverns: 

Tuckaleechee Caverns is one of the most famous caves in Gatlinburg. The cave tours are available every half hour and last for about 45 minutes, including a live show as well as a three-dimensional movie. Windy stairs lead from the entrance to Great Hall, which has ceilings 25 feet high and spans over 100 feet long, taking visitors through four chambers – once used by Confederate soldiers after being captured during America’s Civil War. 

The cave was discovered in the early 1900s by a man who had been searching for gold. But, instead of finding riches in gold, he saw thousands of formations called stalactites and stalagmites – these are mineral structures formed over thousands of years as water drips down from the ceiling to pool on the floor below it.

The formations formed in caves are unique. The calcium carbonate deposits come from rainfall percolating through limestone on top of which this cave resides and creates such magnificent views within it.

In Tuckaleechee Caverns, the most exciting thing is that visitors can still see the remains of prehistoric people. An archaeologist found animal bones, pottery, and projectile points that prove that it was used as a shelter to hunt during these times.

Hidden on the other side of Tuckaleechee Mountain is another cave called Indian Creek Caverns. This cavern has one mile of surveyed passages and over two miles of untouched passages with four entrances that allow visitors to look out from each entry. Animal bones, such as those found here, include bison, deer, elk, bears, birds, and even sabre tooth tigers.

Alum Cave Trail:

Hikers can enjoy a short hike to Alum Cave Trail, located in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Alum Cave Trail offers a fun walk that takes you into the heart of Alum Cave Bluff. Hikers should be prepared to scale steep stairs along the trail, which will take around one to three hours, depending on their fitness level. The hike is 0.6 miles long and passes through primarily forested areas, although sections may have snow or ice covering them during the winter months.

If you plan this trip, then so make sure you’re taking caution before going. The hike towards Alum Cave Bluff is short but steep in some areas. Also, if you suffer from heart conditions, it may be best to avoid this trial due to high altitude and thin air. You can also visit this caves with your kids .

The Top 4 Caves to Visit in Gatlinburg

Did you know that Tennessee is home to over 10,000 caves, which is the most of any U.S. state? Spelunking, or exploring caves, is a popular hobby in many regions of the state. If you love caves and are visiting Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg or the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, continue reading below to gain an understanding of the caves in the area.

Forbidden Caverns

The first cave on our list is located near the picturesque English Mountain. For hundreds of years, Native Americans (specifically the Eastern Woodland Indians) used the Forbidden Caverns for shelter and constant supply of water. They used flint, which is found in the caves, to make knives, arrowheads, and other supplies.

Later, during the 1920s and 1930s, the caverns were used as a location to manufacture moonshine. Because the cave is secluded and the water supply plentiful, it was the perfect spot for making homemade whiskey.

In 1967, Forbidden Caverns opened to the public for touring.

Getting to the caves is part of the fun. You’ll travel through a picturesque valley with gorgeous mountain views as you approach the caverns.

Once inside the 58-degree caves, you’ll explore spectacular formations, tall natural chimneys, grottos, and a sparkling creek. You’ll enjoy the special lighting effects as you take your fun, educational tour. Handrails are provided on this easy-to-walk trip.

Forbidden Caverns is a short drive of about 45 minutes from Gatlinburg. They are open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., April 1 through November 30 each year; but are closed on Thursdays, Sundays, and Thanksgiving Day.

Tickets are $20 for ages 13+ and $12 for kids ages 5-12. Children under 5 are free!

Tuckaleechee Caverns

In the 1940s, two young boys named Bill Vananda and Harry Myers spent much of their free time playing in and around Tuckaleechee Caverns. Using cola bottles filled with kerosene to provide light, they spent many hours exploring the caves.

In 1953, after a lot of hard work, the two friends opened the caves as a tourist attraction.

In the first year, 2,000 people visited the caves. Now, an average of 50,000 visitors come yearly.

Tuckaleechee Caverns are often known as the “Greatest Site Under the Smokies.” During the tour, you’ll visit the Big Room, which is nearly the size of a football stadium. The caverns also boast a 210 feet waterfall known as Silver Falls, which is the tallest subterranean waterfall in the Eastern United States! During the 1.25-mile-long trip, you’ll admire millions of natural formations as well.

The caverns are open 7 days a week. They are open the following dates and times each year: March 1-March 31 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.), April 1-October 31 (10 a.m.-6 p.m.), and November 1-November 30 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.).

Adult tickets are $20, children ages 5-11 are $9, and kids under 4 are free.

The Lost Sea Adventure

The history of The Lost Sea Adventure is so rich and vast, you’ll be fascinated during your whole tour!

You’ll learn of how the Cherokee Indians used the cave and how white settlers stored their potatoes and vegetables there, using it as a natural refrigerator. In the 1860s, the Confederate Army mined the caves for saltpeter, which was used to manufacture gunpowder.

Later, the cave was also used for cockfights, dancing, and moonshining.

In 1905, a thirteen-year-old boy named Ben Sands crawled underground for about 300 feet, at which time he found a huge room filled with water. For the rest of his life, he retold the story of how he threw mudballs into the darkness as hard as he could, but only heard splashes. He was never able to locate the room’s walls or ceilings, as it was so vast and dark.

To this day, divers with exploration equipment are not able to identify exactly how large and deep The Lost Sea is. The US Department of the Interior has named the Lost Sea, America’s Largest Underground Lake, as a Registered National Landmark.

When visiting the caverns, you’ll enjoy a ¾ mile round-trip guided tour of the caves, enjoying the large rooms and beautiful formations. At the bottom of the cave, you’ll take a boat ride on The Lost Sea!

Visit The Lost Sea Adventure any day of the year, except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

This cave is about 1 hour 45 minutes from Downtown Gatlinburg, but it’s worth the drive! Tickets for adults are $23.95, children ages 4-12 are $13.95, and kids under 3 are admitted free. The last tour leaves at 5pm each day.

In addition to the cave, you’ll also get to see the Old Sweetwater Village which includes a gift shop, blacksmith shop and gem mine.

Get ready for a day of exploration! The 4.6-mile roundtrip hike on Alum Cave Trail is sure to be an adventure.

You’ll cross log bridges and travel through an old-growth hardwood forest. Hiking up the stone stairs through Arch Rock is the highlight of the journey for many hikers.

After about two miles, you’ll reach Inspiration Point, which offers incredible views of a rocky valley surrounded by stunning mountains. Next, you’ll find Alum Cave. Some hikers turn back after viewing the cave; but, if you’re up for the challenge, you can continue to the summit of Mount Le Conte, which offers incredible panoramic views.

This “cave” is more about the journey and mountainous views rather than the cave itself. Alum Cave isn’t really a cave. It is actually a large arch in the side of the mountain, which gives the impression of a cave.

In 1837, three farmers applied for a grant of a 50-acre lot of land that included Alum Cave. They were granted the land; and the Epsom Salts Manufacturing Company began mining magnesium sulfate, alum, magnesia, saltpeter, and copperas.

The “cave” is named Alum Cave because of the deposits of alum found along the cave walls to this day.

This hike is considered strenuous, steep, and difficult; so, it is best reserved for experienced hikers. You can find the Alum Cave Trailhead on Newfound Gap Road, which is only about 20 minutes outside of Gatlinburg. It is best to visit the trail April through November.

Your Gatlinburg adventure won’t be complete without exploring at least one of East Tennessee’s caves. Admire the incredible formations of the Forbidden Caverns or the Tuckaleechee Caverns. Take boat ride on The Lost Sea or hike to see the Alum Cave. The natural wonder of these caverns will be an enjoyable experience that will thrill and excite the whole family!

Why We Love Exploring Caves in Tennessee

Our kids love heading down into caves to see the wonders of nature, and Tennessee is a wonderful place to do it with more than 10,000 known caves. That’s more than 20 percent of all known caves in the country!

In fact, Tennessee has more caves than any other state in the US . Tennessee is made up of a lot of limestone, and underground sources of water erode the minerals.

Most of the caves in the state are found in East Tennessee, with a lot of them just west of the Appalachain Mountains. It appears these caves were known to the Eastern Woodland Indians, where they would rest, take shelter from the elements of the summer heat or harsh winters, and enjoy the clean, clear waters inside these caves.

How Many Caves are Near Gatlinburg?

There are many smaller caves nearby that you are not allowed inside, many of which are in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but two major ones that are within easy driving distance of Gatlinburg.

There is also Alum Cave, a popular hiking destination that’s not quite a “cave” in the true sense of the word, but is a bluff – an overhang of rock over 80 feet high! It’s a resting point on the way to Mount Leconte and is a popular destination itself, with many hikers turning back after seeing this popular attraction. You can reach this bluff by following Alum Cave Trail.

These are the two major caves within a short drive from Gatlinburg that are definitely worth checking out. In these caves, you can see amazing rock formations, natural chimneys, walk past sparkling formations of mineral deposits, and even find a great reminder in the gift shop.

The Best Caves to Explore in Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains

Forbidden caverns.

If you’ve been out to the Smokies, you’ve probably seen signs advertising for Forbidden Caverns. This is a truly spectacular cave system that has guided tours most of the year.

Forbidden Caverns is open April 1-November 30 except for certain days. It is a constant 58 degrees year-round in the cavern, so you might want to bring along a light jacket, even if it is summertime in the South above you.

Here you will find friendly tour guides, interesting caves and underground caverns after your scenic drive to get here. It’s named after an Old Indian legend of an Indian Princess. Definitely worth a couple hours of your vacation.

Be sure to check their website before planning a trip there to ensure they are open on the day you want to go. As of the time of this writing they are not allowing buses or scheduled group tours (which I kind of like because there won’t be any field trips!).

Famous for: Cave onyx, which appears to drape over the stone walls or hang like fans from the ceiling of the cave. There is also an underground stream in this cave.

How long does it take to go through the Forbidden Caverns?

The guided tour is just under an hour at 55 minutes long. The largest group they take is about 30 people, and it is not recommened for those with respiratory or health issues that would make caving dangerous.

As of this writing, adult prices are $20 each and kids 5-12 are $12. If you have any kids younger than 5 they get to go through for free! You can’t get advance or online tickets, so you’ll have to purchase these when you get there.

Tuckaleechee Caverns

Tuckaleechee Caverns in nearby Townsend, TN is another popular cave destination. It’s known as the “Greatest Site Under the Smokies” and has been awarded AAA’s Exclusive “Five Star Attraction” rating for its spectacular caverns, an enormous room big enough to hold a football field, a beautiful underground waterfall and a crystal clear underground river.

This cave is open from March 1-November 30 and offers some super spectacular views. There is the “Big Room” which could hold an entire football stadium (400 feet by 300 feet and 150 feet high!) and the 210-Silver Falls, the tallest subterranean waterfall in the Easter US.

You can also see 24-foot stalagmites and a crystal clear cave river in this one-hour tour. It’s definitely one you don’t want to miss!

1. Forbidden Caverns

One of the best-known caves in the region of Gatlinburg is Forbidden Caverns close to Sevierville on the outer edge of the mountain town.

This cavern is one among many in the region that were discovered by accident. This was only in the 1930s when a man on the lookout for lumber stumbled across them.

The naturally-formed structures were crafted over thousands of years by water dripping from the ceiling to the pool on the floor below it. And the formations here are indeed made uniquely by the rainfall slowly filtering through the limestone that the cave is part of, creating some amazing underground scenarios.

The Tuckaleechee Caverns are also home to remains of prehistoric people and various artifacts related to them.

If you’re interested in exploring them while you’re in Gatlinburg, you’re in luck. There are a few caves close by that you need to see! Here is everything you need to know about the caves near Gatlinburg:

Forbidden Caverns

Tourists won’t have to go any farther than Sevierville to find the best cave attraction in the state! Guides at the Forbidden Caverns take guests on the tours are remarkably well informed and adept at answering almost any question. Access to the cave has been improved with walkways and appropriate handrails without detracting from the natural beauty of the formations. The entertaining and informative tours lead visitors along the path of a sparkling stream and through several breathtaking grottoes. Tuckaleechee Caverns

Tuckaleechee Caverns is another one of the best caves near Gatlinburg. This Townsend attraction boasts onyx formations and a beautiful double waterfall. It’s known as the “Greatest Site Under the Smokies.” The caverns are estimated to be several million years old, and one of their most impressive features is the “BigRoom,” a soaring chamber that never fails to astonish guests. Another great sight to see is the SilverFalls. It falls 210 feet from top to bottom and is the tallest subterranean waterfall in the eastern United States. Tuckaleechee Caverns has become more and more popular over the years, growing from 2,000 visitors its first year to an average of over 50,000 visitors each year.

Alum Cave is one of the most visited “caves” near Gatlinburg. Although it has cave in its name, it’s not technically a cave. It’s actually a concaved bluff. To reach Alum Cave near Gatlinburg, visitors must take the Alum Cave Trail, located off Newfound Gap Road, south of the Sugarlands Visitor Center. This hike is moderately difficult, and ascends 1,125 feet in elevation towards the top of Mount LeConte. It’s a 2.3-mile hike from the trailhead to the bluffs. Along the way, you’ll cross footbridges, climb under Arch Rock, and enjoy gorgeous views. Alum Cave is about 80 feet in height and about 500 feet in length. If you visit during the warmer months of the year, water drips off from the ledges above. In the colder months, the droplets turn into impressive icicles!
