After spending a couple of days exploring Darwin city, we suggest you set aside some time and choose one of these best day trips from Darwin to experience more of the top-end magic.
Darwin isn’t exactly on the radar of most travellers. Yet, people who want to experience the best that Australia has to offer usually end up there. That’s because Darwin is the gateway to the Northern Territory and all the stark, ancient landscapes that the state offers.
So rent a car or check out one of the recommended tours below and see more on your visit.
Kakadu National Park

Kakadu has to be on any list of the best day trips from Darwin. It’s the largest national park in Australia and stretches over nearly 20,000 square kilometres (7,722 square miles) of land. The stark, harsh landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with waterfalls, rainforest, birds and wildlife both shy and deadly, and some of the best Aboriginal rock art in the country.
What to see in Kakadu
Located around 1hour and 40 minutes drive from the city, a trip to Kakadu makes for one of the best day tours from Darwin. Here’s what to see and do while you’re there:
- Visit Nadab Lookout at sunset for the most stunning views possible.
- Follow the Nourlangie Rock Art Walk to experience the history and culture.
- Hike the rocky trail to Jim Jim Falls.
- Go for a swim in the pristine Maguk Gorge.
- Join a day tour from Darwin to pack as much into the experience as possible.
Recommended Kakadu Day Tours
Kakadu, nourlangie and yellow waters tour.
This one day tour from Darwin is exhausting, but if you have limited time, it’s your best option for seeing this amazing UNESCO site. The tour includes visiting Nourlangie Rock, a cruise on the Yellow River to meet the local crocs. After lunch, visit Warradjan Aboriginal Centre and learn the history of the area.
If you can stay longer, do one of these multi-day tours. We did the 3-day tour, and it was brilliant.
Located about 90 minutes from Darwin, Litchfield National Park is one of Darwin’s more manageable day trips. It’s a smaller park with a loop road that passes by all the best attractions and has many places to stop and take in the scenery. You’ll still get the fantastic landscape, varied wildlife, and great outdoor activities in this park. It’s just on a smaller, more manageable scale.
What to see in Litchfield
When you visit Litchfield National Park on one of your Darwin day trips, here’s what to see and do:
- Stop off to admire the Florence and Wangi Falls and their crystal-clear pools.
- Visit the sandstone pillars and termite mounds of the Lost City.
- Go for a swim at Buley Rockhole.
- Test yourself on the Walker Creek Walk, which is part of the 39km Tabletop Track.
- Stay out of the water in the wet season unless you want to get eaten by crocs!
Recommended Litchfield Day Tours
There are dozens of operators who sell tours to Litchfield, but we highly recommend you choose a company that offers small group sizes and are eco-certified. Two we recommend are:
Litchfield National Park Full-Day Safari from Darwin
This tour is run by Wayoutback Safaris , who have offered tours in the Northern Territory since 1999. I first travelled with them back in 2002 and had a brilliant time. Since then, everyone who we have recommended to them has felt the same way. We are due to go again later this year.
This 11.5 hour day tour takes a maximum of 27 travellers and includes a BBQ lunch and hiking and swimming. Visit Florence Falls, Wangi Falls and Buley Rockhole. You will also see the impressive termite mounds that the area is famous for.
Darwin: Premium Litchfield Regional Small Group Day Tour
If you prefer a smaller group, then this premium tour from ethical NT . You visit the same places as the tour above but with the addition of Berry Springs and Batchelor. Each trip includes a maximum of 11 guests and an average of only eight. The included lunch is BBQ barramundi, and there are plenty of healthy treats along the way.
Local tip: If you want to stay overnight in the area, consider Litchfield Safari Camp .
Other Litchfield options
Nitmiluk National Park is around three hours drive from the city, making it one of Darwin’s more isolated day trips. If you’re heading out to this area, you might want to stay the night. The park will reward you for that because there’s so much to do there that a single day could never be enough.
What to see in Nitmiluk National park and Katherine
When this park is one of your Darwin day tours, here’s what to do there:
- Marvel at the beauty of the Nitmiluk Gorge as well as the Aboriginal artwork that decorates its walls.
- Take a sunset or sunrise cruise to see the gorge in its best light.
- Cruise or canoe in Katherine Gorge with its fantastic sandstone walls and rock art.
- Go swimming at Edith Falls, one of the few crocodile free places in the Northern Territory.
- Go camping in the idyllic grasslands around Edith Falls.
- Walk the Jatbula Trail or the 2.6km Leliyn Trail.
Tours to Nitmiluk and Katherine
Many of the tours from Darwin to Nitmiluk are multi-day offerings and include Kakadu over 3-5 days. For a one day option , you are looking at a 14 hour day. You will visit the gorges of the Nitmiluk National Park and take a 2-hour cruise, have a chance to swim in the waterhole at Edith Falls and even make a brief stop at the town of Katherine.
If the idea of 14 hours is a bit much or you prefer to travel in style, and you have a budget to match, a tour includes a scenic flight from Darwin, a chopper ride over the 13 gorges a 2-hour cruise. This tour with Kookaburra air runs for 8 hours.
Fishing in Darwin is almost an extreme sport. Any time you’re near the water, you have to be aware of the danger of crocodiles. And that’s half the fun, isn’t it? If you enjoy fishing and want to include it in your day trips from Darwin, then you’ll have a lot of choices. You can fish for freshwater fish like Barramundi or Saratoga or take a tour offshore and try saltwater fish like Coral Trout, Jewfish, and Golden Snapper.

Incredible day trips from Darwin you need to try

30 January 2024
A holiday to Darwin isn’t complete without venturing into the natural and cultural wonders that lie beyond its city lights. Here, four of the best day trips from Darwin.
Darwin is a colourful city thanks to its vibrant markets , outdoor movies and other urban delights. But the city’s surrounds are equally (if not more) enchanting. Hop in the car – or catch a ferry, bus or charter flight – to one of these gems that sparkle just a short distance away from the Northern Territory capital. Here are the four best day trips from Darwin.
Litchfield National Park
If you fancy waterfalls, emerald-green swimming holes and a tropical and tranquil setting, Litchfield National Park is only a 1.5-hour drive from Darwin. Travel down the Stuart Highway and enter the park via the tiny township of Batchelor, stopping at the magnetic termite mounds before exploring the plunging waterfalls at Florence Falls, or floating inside a network of peaceful waterholes at Buley Rockhole. A walking path links the two popular spots, so take your time ambling along this route, pausing for regular dips in the adjacent waters.
Stop at the magnetic termite mounds before making your way to Florence Falls.
Other stunning sites within Litchfield include Tolmer Falls and Wangi Falls, the best-known attraction in the national park. Within the park, you’ll find a kiosk and barbecue facilities at Wangi Falls, walking trails and a picnic spot that’s ideal for a lazy tropical lunch. Access to the park is free and the best time to visit is during the early morning or late afternoon.
Total travel time, Darwin return : about four hours
What to pack : Sunscreen, lunch, water, beach towel and goggles if you want to explore underwater.
Float inside a network of peaceful waterholes at Buley Rockhole.
Mary River Region
If spotting wildlife in its natural habitat is high on the agenda, and you’re partial to a rainforest walk, travel 70 kilometres to the Mary River wetlands east of Darwin along the Arnhem Highway (leading to Kakadu National Park). Make Fogg Dam Conservation Area your first stop, where you can choose between the wetlands or a walk. Up to 200 species of birdlife gather among the lilies and reeds in the wetlands, including rainbow pitta birds and crimson finches. You might spy the odd croc, too.
Make Fogg Dam Conservation Area your first stop in the Mary River region.
Walking trails will take you through the rainforest, past ancient fig and banyan trees, to a number of lookouts overlooking the wetlands. Take your adrenalin levels up a notch a little further along the highway with a jumping crocodile cruise . Over one (spine-tingling) hour, you’ll coast along the Adelaide River, where crocs lurk just beneath the water’s surface and jump up to snap at buffalo meat hanging from rods just off the boat’s deck.
Total travel distance, Darwin return : two hours
What to pack: a broad-rimmed hat, sunscreen, water, lunch and binoculars.
Take an airboat tour of the wetlands or a croc-jumping cruise.
Crab Claw Island
Just over an hour’s drive from Darwin, Crab Claw Island Resort is a picturesque coastal retreat perched on the water’s edge – providing the perfect balance of family-friendly fun, fishing and relaxation. There are two pools and boats for hire, or simply relax on the deck. If you’re a keen angler, don’t forget to register to catch the Million Dollar Fish .
If you want to leave the car at home, jump on a ferry and head over to Crab Claw for a seafood lunch overlooking the beach. The ferry departs from Cullen Bay in Darwin mid-morning and returns late afternoon. Check departure and arrival times directly with SeaLink.
Total travel distance, Darwin return: two hours driving or a full day tour with SeaLink.
What to pack: a broad-rimmed hat, sunscreen, bathers, beach towel and water.
Berry Springs
If a short-ish day trip from Darwin sounds ideal, you can’t go past a visit to Berry Springs Nature Park – it’s a real-deal tropical paradise. Travel south from the city and turn off at Cox Peninsula Road to get to the park, located just 50 minutes’ drive from Darwin. Pull in at Territory Wildlife Park on the way to explore its vast 404 hectares, home to almost every variety of native bird, reptile and macropod.
You can’t go past a visit to Berry Springs Nature Park.
A shuttle bus takes visitors to the Nocturnal House, which hums with ghost bats, sugar gliders, quolls and other night-time critters, as well as the walk-in aviary, aquarium, stingray lagoon and dingo enclosure. Refresh over a mango chutney-laced lunch and a tropical fruit ice cream at Crazy Acres Mango Farm , then dive into Berry Springs: three sparkling, azure-hued waterholes fringed by pandanas.
Total travel distance, Darwin return : 1.5 hours
What to pack : mask and snorkel, water, towel and sunscreen.
Visit the Nocturnal House, which hums with ghost bats, sugar gliders, quolls and other night-time critters.

1 Day Litchfield National Park Tour from Darwin Itinerary
Discover the beauty and abundance of wildlife in Northern Australia with our Litchfield Day Tour. Throughout the day you’ll get to explore a whole host of different landscapes, from dense bush to low valleys, and incredible swimming spots , all whilst learning about the history and culture of Litchfield National Park . Our itinerary is jam-packed full of outdoor adventures and there’s plenty of wildlife encounters to be had.
We start the day by heading to the Adelaide River , where you’ll have the option to get up close and personal with saltwater crocodiles on a Jumping Crocodile Cruise . Cruise around observing the local crocs in their natural habitat and be amazed at their strength and size when they jump out of the water for a meaty snack. Alternatively, we’ll head to the Fogg Dam Conservation Centre where we can view a range of native wildlife that call the wetlands home. After making the most of this once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity we’ll dive straight into the beautiful scenery of the Litchfield National Park.
On the way, we’ll stop to check out the fascinating Cathedral Termite Mounds . These incredible feats of nature are unique to Northern Australia, and the termites that reside in them are some of the longest living insects on the entire planet. Seeing the 100-year-old structures with your own eyes is a mesmerising experience, and our local guide will impart knowledge and histories of these weird and wonderful creatures. The mighty towers provide a cool home for termites and great photo opportunities for us!
Once we’ve arrived in Litchfield, you’ll have the chance to cool off at one of the area’s famous plunge pools, Buley Rockhole or Wangi Falls , the perfect place to catch your breath and chill out with new-found friends. Enveloped by the lush green canopy of tall trees, you can splash around at the base of the waterfall and soak up the natural scenery.
From there we’ll take a picturesque stroll through the jaw-dropping landscapes of Litchfield, past soaring cliff-faces, alongside green-carpeted valleys, and to the incredible lookout point over Tolmer Falls or Florence Falls . To get there, we’ll take a short bushwalk set against the soundtrack of chirping, colourful birds.
After a jam-packed day filled with lush landscapes and a whole host of Australian Wildlife, we’ll head back to Darwin before the sun sets.
Due to the unpredictable nature of the Top End, the tour itinerary is flexible and may not be exactly as described here. Your guide will take into account a range of factors including weather conditions, water levels and road access to plan a tour that will offer you the best experience in the area. However, some locations may be inaccessible when you travel due to circumstances beyond our control.
