If the Southern California Wine Country destination of Temecula Valley isn’t on your radar for wine regions you need to visit, it should be. Centrally located in Riverside County, about a one-to-two-hour drive from most of Southern California’s major cities and airports, including San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange County, Temecula Valley is an easy getaway from just about anywhere.

With rolling hills reminiscent of the Tuscan countryside, a Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny days, breezy afternoons, and cool nights (perfect for grape-growing and vacationing!), and dozens of different grape varieties and styles of wines produced, this wine region, named by Wine Enthusiast Magazine as one of the top ten wine destinations in the world in 2019, is a must-visit for wine lovers.

While booking an itinerary of individual winery visits is a great way to see this popular Southern California Wine Country, there are actually plenty of companies in the region that specialize in creating memorable wine experiences for you. From guided wine tours to simple limo transportation to offbeat excursions on horseback or motorcycle, Temecula offers plenty of options for tasting your way through Wine Country. All you have to do is show up. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorites to get you started.

Temecula Wine Tasting Guide: Best Wineries, Hotels, & Tours

Learn About the Best Wineries in Temecula to Visit, Along with Recommended Temecula Wine Tours, Restaurants, Hotels & Vineyard Resort Options

Editor’s Note: This is not designed to be an all-encompassing list of Temecula wineries to visit, but rather a number of our favorites based on recent visitation. If you’ve visited a winery not on this list, we’d love to get your perspective and why it may deserve a spot on upcoming coverage!

Temecula wine country is tucked away in Southern California’s Inland Empire, making it perfect for a weekend wine tasting getaway. Temecula’s tasting rooms offer a blend of New World and Old World varieties for wine lovers to try. Home to more than fifty wineries and cultivating approximately thirty grape varieties, Temecula has everything from the familiar California varieties, like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel and Merlot alongside the not-so-typical, like Vermentino, Falanghina and the historically significant Mission Grape. Tempranillo, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc.

Temecula is best known for bold red wines. Tempranillo has complex aromas of plums and black cherries, while its Sangiovese wines have soft tannins and riper fruit flavors compared to their Italian cousins. Syrah has won accolades for being round, fleshy, generous and full-flavored. Cabernet Franc has emerged as the star of the Bordeaux varieties and is fast earning a reputation for producing a full, elegant and aromatic style.

Where to Go Wine Tasting in Temecula

Planning a trip to Temecula couldn’t be simpler. Depending on how much time you have, the best way to taste wine, dine and discover the region is to explore one, two, or all three of its wine trails – and each is worth exploring for a full day.

The Rancho California Trail, The Calle Contento Trail and The De Portola Trail each offer a unique set of vineyards and wineries for tastings, dining, education, and entertainment. The easiest to access is The Rancho California Wine Trail, and it’s divided into western and eastern sections. Here you’ll find a large cluster of wineries and activities, and it is your best bet for maximum impact if you only have time for a day trip.

Day-One: The Rancho California Wine Trail

Visit Callaway Vineyard & Winery , the first commercial winery in Temecula Valley and home of Meritage Restaurant specializing in Farm to Table preparations.

Stop by Thornton Winery , known for their jazz concerts and wine tours in their French-style château.

Hart Winery offers unique wines like Angelica, a sweet, fortified style wine the Franciscan missionaries made during the late 1700s and one of the first wines made in California.

Baily Vineyard & Winery , where visitors are hosted in a medieval-themed tasting room and restaurant.

Monte de Oro has a great patio and is an excellent stop to enjoy a glass of Cabernet Franc with their famed meatball sandwich.

Wilson Creek Winery and Vineyards makes a sparkling almond wine that everybody raves about.

Day-Two: The Calle Contento Wine Trail

If you want to dig a little deeper into the Valley, take a detour along the meandering Calle Contento Wine Trail with its stunning vineyard views and backroad charm. The wineries located along this quiet road have a relaxed wine country vibe.

Falkner Winery , specializing in Super Tuscan and Meritage blends is home to The Pinnacle Restaurant with 360-degree views of its vineyards.

Briar Rose Winery features sit-down tastings in a to-scale reconstruction of Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Cottage.

Longshadow Ranch Winery is a traditional California horse ranch where you can relax with a glass of their Gunslinger’s Reserve Zinfandel, Cabernet blend, or a pint of local craft beer.

Peltzer Farm & Winery highlights an extensive year-round events calendar with a festive atmosphere while serving over 100 years of farming experience in every taste of their wine.

Vindemia Vineyard, Winery, and Bed & Breakfast emphasizes sustainability, and you can taste the efforts in the glass. Plus, you can ride in one of their hot air balloons for a Wine and Sunrise Flight.

Day-Three: The De Portola Wine Trail

The De Portola Wine Trail is a five-mile stretch of rolling hills with wineries, equestrian facilities and some of the best views of the Valley.

Cougar Vineyard & Winery featuring estate grown Italian varietals including Primitivo , Pinot Grigio, and Montepulciano that you can enjoy with Sangio’s Deli hand-tossed pizzas, salads, and appetizers.

Danza del sol Winery is set in an idyllic Spanish style estate with table-side wine tasting service.

Oak Mountain Winery has hilltop views where you can sample their sparkling raspberry and sparkling strawberry wines.

Robert Renzoni Vineyards offers great views and their restaurant, Mama Rosa’s Trattoria, has the only brick wood-burning pizza oven in the Valley.

Somerset Winery specializes in wines made from the Rhône varieties such as Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache, Syrah, and the Spanish Macabeo, Monastrell and Tempranillo.

Winetraveler Tip: Southern California is warm and pleasant most of the year, but be aware that the high desert gets very hot in the summer.

Unlike most wine regions, Temecula Valley has lodging at many of the wineries, which means you can spend the day wine tasting without having to travel. What can be better than enjoying a leisurely breakfast among the vines before exploring some more?

South Coast Winery Resort & Spa is situated on 38 acres of vineyards. Here you’ll experience amenities like spacious suites, fireplaces, pools, spa service and all-day dining.

Carter Estate Winery and Resort offers rooms that overlook the Estate with fireplaces and private balconies or patios and a pool with a neighboring bar.

Ponte Vineyard Inn is a stunning hotel and winery with elegant rooms and a relaxing atmosphere. Guests and visitors can dine surrounded by Italian gardens or have a cocktail at their full-service bar that incidentally is the only place offering spirits in Temecula wine country.

Pechanga Resort & Casino has a full-service hotel where you can enjoy Las Vegas-style gaming, all-night entertainment before unwinding at their state-of-the-art spa.

Fun Fact: Temecula is the only city in California to still retain its original Native American name.

Travel Logistics for Wine Tasting in Temecula

A convenient thirty-minute drive from the Pacific Coast, a one-hour drive from San Diego, and a one-hour drive from Palm Springs, few wine regions are more reachable from major cities, roadways and airports than Temecula. You can check flight deals on flights into any of these cities here .

Temecula Wine Country History

The story of Temecula is rich and varied. The known history starts with the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, who have called the Temecula Valley home for more than 10,000 years. The name ‘Temecula’ loosely translates to “Where the sun breaks through the mist.” After the arrival of Europeans, it became an outpost for Spanish Missionaries who were the first to plant grapes before becoming a Mexican army outpost in the Mexican-American War, and later a railroad town with a Wild West reputation.

Coastal mountain ranges and inland valleys border the Temecula Valley. The sun heats the valleys east of Temecula. The warm air rises, pulling the Pacific Ocean’s cooler air through two mountain ranges, the Rainbow Gap and the Santa Margarita Gap. This cool air creates the pattern of warm days, breezy afternoons, and refreshing nights, resulting in the perfect location for wine grape cultivation and for enjoying the outdoors.

Taste Temecula's decadent wines during a tour of the region.

Situated between Los Angeles and San Diego in the hills of Southern California's wine country, Temecula is home to dozens of wineries. After evaluating both expert input and consumer sentiment, U.S. News determined the following tours to be the best available for wine enthusiasts visiting the area. All of these excursions are conducted by dedicated guides eager to share their knowledge of viticulture, wine-making and regional history.

Grapeline Tours – Vineyard Picnic Tour

Visit four wineries and enjoy tastings or a glass of wine at each one on this half-day excursion. This tour also includes a catered lunch. The tour begins around 10 a.m. when Grapeline will pick you up from your local hotel. You'll spend about five hours tasting your way through the valley before being dropped back off at your lodging between 4 and 5 p.m. Participants frequently praise the guides for their entertaining and informative commentary as well as their overall helpfulness and friendliness. When available, behind-the-scenes tours at one of the wineries are also included, and tour-takers tend to appreciate the insights offered into the wine-making process. Ticket prices, which cover transportation, wine samples and a well-liked lunch with multiple menu options, cost around $130 (with an upcharge on Saturdays and holidays).

[ View & Book Tickets .]

Grapeline Tours – Classic Wine Adventure

This tour takes off from Old Town Temecula and stops at three wineries. You'll get cheese and other snacks to compliment the experience; but some reviewers mention the snacks aren't substantial and suggest eating before you go. Tour-takers consistently describe the guides as enthusiastic, organized, knowledgeable and amiable and the wineries' fare as top-notch. The four-hour excursions are available twice daily starting at 10 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Tickets cost approximately $120 for the morning version and $110 for the afternoon outing; the price includes round-trip transportation and wine samples as well as snacks at one of the wineries. In addition to this tour, and the iteration including lunch, Grapeline offers private winery tours.

Temecula Valley Jeep & Wine Tours

Enjoy the sights of Temecula from an open-air jeep as this small-group tour takes you to three wineries and their tasting rooms (as well as crush pads and barrel rooms when available). While traveling the region's backroads, guides share insights about wine-making and local history, which tour-takers consistently find both informative and amusing. The four-wheel-drive vehicles can carry six passengers and depart daily at 11 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. Tickets start at around $130 for weekday outings and $150 for tours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. (Discounts are available if you book online.) The price includes pickups at Temecula hotels, bottled water and a picnic lunch. Private tours are also an option.

Sunrider Wine & Beer Jeep Tour – Discovery Tour

Combine an off-road vineyard drive with stops for tastings at three wineries on this three-hour expedition. Wine-lovers appreciate the generous samples offered during this tour as well as the guides' knowledge and friendliness. Tickets cost approximately $150, which includes a picnic-style lunch in addition to the wine samples. Jeeps head out daily at 10:50 a.m. and return at 2:50 p.m. Sunrider also offers a tour that includes a look at a wine production facility as well as a tour that features food and wine pairings.

We took the Temecula Wine tour, starting off with lunch a Robert Rinzoni winey, before getting to the winery we drove through old town Temecula and stopped to see some long horn bulls and water buffalo. The Best Coast Tours team made us feel comfortable and showed us a great time. I have been going to Temecula for years, and this was a fun, new side of the area I hadn't seen.

I have been to the Temecula winery's in the past however I have never been in such style. Joseph our tour guide was so informative and really gave us an entire lesson on the Temecula area. All of the stops were plenty of time to taste, shop and explore. We had a lunch stop followed by the third winery stop. At the third stop we enjoyed a meat and cheese board. Overall the entire experience was unbelievable. This is a day trip every Southern California resident or tourist needs to do!!!!!!

Our team went out for a team building event this week and opted for a wine tour in Temecula. It was a perfect day out, as Best Coast took us to four wineries and let us roam at our leisure. Never did we feel rushed, which is key for a pleasant day. Added bonus, we made new friends with the other guests that joined our tour. Whether your plans are corporate or social, this is the way to take in SoCal sites! Joe and Richard were great guides with a wealth of knowledge of the local areas and venues. There is a lot of thought given to each element and it shows from the minute you step into their Sprinter Van, until the moment you are dropped off. A truly hospitable experience! Looking forward to cruising with Best Coast Tours again ... next time on their San Diego and Orange County tours!

An amazing tour in wine country!!!! Thanks to our tour guide....

Whether you’re a seasoned oenophile or a casual wine enthusiast, embark with us on a vinous journey through Temecula’s most celebrated vineyards.

But first, here are some particularities of the wines and wineries of Temecula

Temecula Valley:

  • Climate & Geography: Located in Southern California, Temecula benefits from a unique microclimate due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. This ensures a daily pattern of warm days followed by cooler evenings, which is optimal for grape maturation. The region is also shielded by surrounding mountain ranges, ensuring the vineyards are less affected by coastal fog, a factor more prevalent in Northern California.
  • Soil Composition: Temecula’s soil is diverse and influenced by its geographical placement between the desert and the sea. It’s largely decomposed granite mixed with clay loam, which is excellent for drainage.
  • Varietals: While Temecula wineries produce a wide variety of wines, they’ve had notable success with Mediterranean varietals, such as Syrah, Viognier, and Sangiovese, as well as Spanish grapes like Tempranillo.
  • Size & Atmosphere: Many of Temecula’s wineries are family-owned and possess a boutique charm. The atmosphere tends to be relaxed and welcoming, making it an approachable destination for all wine enthusiasts.
  • Wine Styles: Beyond the traditional still wines, Temecula also boasts several wineries that produce méthode champenoise sparkling wines.

Are Temecula wineries worth visiting?

Absolutely! Temecula wineries offer a unique and intimate wine-tasting experience. With its scenic vineyards, welcoming atmosphere, and a blend of both modern and traditional winemaking practices, it’s a destination that caters to both seasoned wine aficionados and casual wine enthusiasts. The region is particularly known for its boutique charm, making it perfect for those looking for a more relaxed wine country experience.

What kind of wine is Temecula known for?

While Temecula produces a diverse range of wines, the region has gained notable recognition for its Mediterranean and Spanish varietals such as Syrah, Viognier, Sangiovese, and Tempranillo. Additionally, the area’s unique microclimate allows for successful cultivation of both white and red grape varieties.

What is the average cost of wine tasting in Temecula?

As of my last update in September 2021, the average cost of wine tasting in Temecula ranged from $15 to $40 per person, depending on the winery and the specific tasting experience chosen. Some wineries offer more premium or reserve tastings at a higher price. It’s always a good idea to check the individual winery’s website or contact them directly for the most current tasting fees.

How many wineries are in the Temecula area?

Temecula Valley is home to over 40 licensed wineries. This number continues to grow as the region’s wine industry flourishes and attracts new winemakers and entrepreneurs. From family-owned boutique wineries to larger, more established estates, there’s a diverse array to explore.

Best Wineries to Visit in Temecula Valley

Temecula Valley, within an hour's drive of San Diego, Palm Springs or Orange County, bills itself as Southern California's Wine Country. Though it got a later start than its better known northern California counterparts—pioneers like Mount Palomar and Callaway set up shop in the late 1960s—the Temecula Valley today is home to nearly 40 wineries. There is also a thriving "wine country" scene here with resorts, restaurants, tours and activities geared toward wine tourism. The scenery alone is a draw, with rolling hills and seasonal snow-capped peaks. Many Temecula wineries take advantage of the grape-loving warm days and cool nights (many are at altitude and affected by the Pacific Ocean fogs and breezes) to produce extensive portfolios of different wines. There is surely something here for everyone's taste. —Richard Nalley

Baily Vineyard and Winery

The Baily family was among the Temecula's first wave of wine producers, planting their first vineyard in 1982. Founder/winemaker Phil Baily concentrates on Bordeaux-derived grapes, and gives the reds up to 30 months in barrel for added smoothness. There are several ways to taste: The main tasting room is at the Baily Visitor Center, where you can drop in for a $15 tasting of current releases; you can also have lunch at the Baily's restaurant, Carol's, which includes live music on Saturdays and Sundays (and a doggie menu on Sundays). There is also a by-reservation tasting of older wines available at the production facility, for $20-$30. And for those just passing through, the Baily Wine Country Cafe in Old Town Temecula is owned by Phil Baily's son Chris. bailywinery.com

Briar Rose Winery

Here's something you won't find everywhere: A winery whose buildings are replicas of Snow White's cottages in the 1937 Disney cartoon. Briar Rose's founder was a Disney employee who built the cottages a generation ago for his wife. Now under the ownership of the Linkogle family (son Larry is a famous motocross racer), the property began bottling its own wines in 2007. Though it is a self-proclaimed "micro-winery" (topping out at about 3,500 cases), Briar Rose produces a bevy of wines, including its unique Talking Frog bubbly, a blend of Viognier and lager beer. Two important notes on the fairy tale: reservations are required, and no one under 21 is allowed on the property. briarrosewinery.com

Callaway Vineyard and Winery

The foundational winery of Temecula's new age, Callaway opened its doors way back in 1969. The visionary was Ely Callaway, better known for his golf gear empire, but the winery passed through corporate hands before being bought by the Lin family, who own it to this day. Modest-sized by California standards, Callaway's 25,000 cases make it one of the larger operations in Temecula. It bottles a slew of different wines, including Zinfandels and Syrahs. It is also a prime wine tourism destination, with a large, handsome tasting room and gift shop, and a variety of drop-in tasting and tour options, including a $25 cellar tour with barrel and tank samples. The Meritage restaurant offers locavore meals, with many ingredients grown on the property, and an extensive slate of concerts. callawaywinery.com

Churon Winery

Churon bills itself as a bit of France in Temecula, and has a chateau to prove it. The chateau is actually a boutique hotel in the midst of the vines (rooms start at around $180), with a grand lobby and views of the very Californian khaki-colored hills outside. The winery's tasting room, off the lobby, offers five pours for $12 from winemaker Benny Rodriguez's extensive lineup that ranges out to bubblies and dessert wines. Retail prices for non club members are typically in the $25-$35 range, including a world-spanning line-up of reds from Zinfandel to Malbec to a rarely seen Ruby Cabernet. innatchuronwinery.com

Cougar Vineyards & Winery

Rick and Jennifer Buffington put in years as home winemakers before buying their original Temecula vineyard in 2005. They followed their passion, focusing the operation on their own estate grapes to produce Italian wine varieties. Some are familiar—like Sangiovese, the basis of the Chianti blend—others less so, like Arneis, the wonderful white grape of Piemonte. In some cases—like Falanghina and Brachetto—Cougar claims to be the only U.S. winery producing the varietal. Tastings are $12 for six samples. You can also augment your tasting with panini, salads and pizza from the winery's Sangio's Deli. On Friday nights and Sundays there is live music. cougarvineyards.com

That classical music you hear? The Doffo family plays that to soothe the vines. Of course, the Argentine-born family patriarch, Marcelo, also vibes to less tame sounds: He is a vintage motorcycle racer and collector, whose MotoDoffo museum in the barrel room contains over 100 scooters and motor bikes (including a multi-decade anthology of Ducatis). The small-lot reds here, mostly Bordeaux-style blends, plus Syrah and Zinfandel, command stiff, often three-figure prices and some come in novel bottles like the jug-handled Zinfandel Reserve. There are also a number of specialty bottlings, including grappa and muscat brandy. Tastings start at $15, but reserve ahead for various vineyard tours. A visit to the motorcycle collection is free. doffowines.com

Europa Village

A destination spot in Temecula wine country, this ambitious, still-unfolding project includes a luxury, Spanish-style 10-room inn (prices begin at around $190) and a winery helmed by well-regarded veteran George Bursick. Under construction in 2017 will be additional components of the project, which will ultimately create three wineries and attendant resort facilities in the styles of France, Italy and Spain. The current wine lineup already seems to have the geographic bases covered. Over 30 wines are bottled here, ranging from dark reds to sparkling to dessert, with heritages that hearken back to all three countries and a few more. Tastings start at $15 for six samples. europavillage.com

Falkner Winery

The sweeping scenery from Falkner's 1,500-foot hilltop has made it not only popular for tasting visits, but for a brisk wedding business as well. The winery's aptly named Pinnacle Restaurant is a white-cloth place with wrap-around views and a creative touch with Mediterranean-influenced food (a Tamarind Ahi Lettuce Wrap, for instance). There is also a rentable private dining room amid the barrels down below. Like many Temecula wineries, Falkner produces an array of wines, topping out with the flagship Meritage Bordeaux-style red blend and Amante Super-Tuscan style red. The winery offers a menu of tour options, from a $20, 30-minute introduction and tasting to a $75, two-hour VIP tour with lunch at the Pinnacle. falknerwinery.com

One of Temecula Valley's pioneers, founded back in 1980, this is still a modestly sized (4,000 cases) family run operation, with family members pulling hoses in the cellar and pouring in the tasting room. In true Temecula fashion, the Harts' small production encompasses a nearly bewildering array of wines, from its much-awarded Sauvignon Blanc to Sangiovese and southern-Rhône style blends. The retail price entry-point is about $25. There is a $12 tasting fee for six samples, or $10 for a full glass. hartfamilywinery.com

Leoness Cellars

With its brick tower, Leoness is a familiar sight along the DePortola Wine Trail ( deportolawinetrail.com ), which begins not far from Old Town Temecula. Owned by two partners with deep roots in the valley's agriculture, Leoness benefits from the ground-up approach they bring to the wines, including the flagship Cabernet Sauvignons, some produced from the Rolling Hills vineyard just below the winery. The basic tasting here is $16 for six wines ($20 on weekends), but Leoness offers a slate of tours as well, such as a private $90-per person guided tour of the vineyard and cellar, which also includes a guided tasting. The well-regarded restaurant here is ambitious but pricey, with entrees running into the $40s. Book ahead or come early to get patio seating. leonesscellars.com

Longshadow Ranch Vineyards and Winery

Longshadow prides itself on its Old West flavor, but it is an upgraded version of the frontier, to be sure—complete with fine wine, carriage rides pulled by Belgian draft horses, and a very architectural version of a ranch house. The hillside vineyards produce a number of wines, among them Estate Sangiovese, Estate Syrah and a less usual Estate Cinsault. The event schedule here includes the "Legends of the Wild West" dinner theater on many Friday nights throughout the year. A pre-sale ticket is only $20, including dinner. Drop-in tastings are $15 for five wines—the panoramic view is free. longshadowranchwinery.com

Lorenzi Estate

Don Lorenzi's family has a long history of grape growing in southern California, but for him, it started as a hobby: He started as a home-winemaker, but in a matter of years he was making enough for friends to opening a winery. Finally, in 2013, he opened a tasting room. Lorenzi Estate, with the distinctive golden lion on the label, now produces 20+ different wines, though it is probably the rich reds that have garnered the greatest critical attention. Lorenzi's premium and super-premium priced lineup includes some exuberant, unconventional blends like the $95 The Phantom, which incorporates six grapes, including Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Call ahead or go online to make a tasting reservation. lorenziestatewines.com

Lorimar Vineyards & Winery

Brothers-in-law Lawrie Lipton and Mark Mansfield have a big-picture view of wine country life, which includes their lively, fruit-forward wines (nearly 20 bottlings), plus two tasting venues, both of which integrate live music and art into the visitor experience. The Lorimar Loft in Old Town Temecula provides six tastes for $14 and music Friday and Saturday nights. The winery facility itself, out in the vineyards and orange groves, expands the offerings considerably. Drop-in tastings are $14-$18 for your choice of six wines, or the guided Reserve Tasting is $25. There are also several tour options, up to the Soprano ($149), which includes tastings and an hour-long cellar and vineyard tour for two (book at least 48 hours ahead). The winery also has an extensive slate of concerts, plus the Pairings restaurant on weekends (the Pairings food truck has also attracted a following). lorimarwinery.com

Maurice Car'rie Vineyard & Winery

Curiously punctuated Maurice Car'rie lays claim to the oldest vineyard in Temecula, planted back in 1968. The estate vineyard has now expanded to 91 acres, and provides the core of this winery's numerous bottlings under the Van Roekel Estate and Maurice Car'rie labels. The winery has garnered numerous awards, most recently for its whites, including the Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc. The place offers several perks to visitors besides its tastings ($15 for five samples), including its signature sourdough bread filled with brie, which can be consumed under the shade trees out on the lawn. On weekends, the winery hosts a craft fair selling everything from ceramics to designer handbags. mauricecarriewinery.com

Miramonte Winery

This hilltop winery has a laid-back feel during the week, with visitors dawdling on the patios and participating in VineyardFit fitness classes on the lawn. Things generally pick up on weekend days, and Miramonte offers live music Friday and Saturday nights. Miramonte describes itself as a Rhône specialist, with a notable Syrah, but there is an Iberian side to the place as well, with Tempranillo and even Sangria. Walk-in tastings don't require reservations, but the winery offers a slate of tours for those who book ahead. Other reasons to stop by include the healthy menus at the Flower Hill Bistro and the custom-etched wine bottle program for a special gift. miramontewinery.com

Monte de Oro Winery

Set on a picturesque hilltop with seasonal views of snow-capped mountains in several directions, Monte de Oro is one of the area's more heavily visited wineries, and it has a massive tasting room (with a glass floor view of the barrel cellar) to accommodate the traffic. The Rhône- and Bordeaux-influenced wines are available for sampling starting at $13-$15 for six tastes, or at the Monte de Oro Bistro on weekends. Go online to reserve a tour ($35-$60) or to buy tickets for special events. There is live music on Sundays and a summer concert series. montedeoro.com

Mount Palomar Winery

Set in the midst of its own 315 acres of vines, with views of snow-capped mountains, the locale at Mount Palomar is so scenic it advertises itself as a venue for photo shoots. One of Temecula's pioneer wineries, it helped set the paradigm for the Mediterranean-style grapes that have become a staple here. Among the winery's specialties are Italianate wines like the Kyanti blend (say it out loud), and Port and Sherry style wines, which they have produced for decades—Mount Palomar claims the oldest Sherry solera in the United States. Tastings are $16-$20 for a choice of six wines in the handsome tasting room. Also on the premises is the Annata bistro. The patio hosts live music on Saturdays and Sundays. mountpalomarwinery.com

Ponte Family Estate Winery

The Spanish Mission-style building that greets you gives way to a rustic-American, barn-style winery, all of it sleek and new-seeming at this well-funded winery and inn. The motto of the place is, "If you like it, it's good wine," and Ponte seems to being trying to produce at least one wine for everybody—its limited productions stretch over four distinct lines of wines, with the flagship reds priced around $35-$75. The tasting room isn't inexpensive either, at $20 for six tastes, but at least during the week you can count on a lot of personal attention. The Restaurant, with seating in the formal gardens, is open every day for lunch and dinner on weekends. The highly rated Ponte Vineyard Inn (rooms from about $219) makes a very comfortable home base for wine country visits. pontevineyardinn.com

Robert Renzoni Vineyards & Winery

The Renzoni story is both old and new. Old because the family started making wine back in 1886 in Italy. New because Robert Renzoni founded this winery in 2008, making use of the knowledge gained by his predecessors in Temecula viticulture. The winery concentrates on Zinfandel, Bordeaux and Italian varieties from its several sustainably farmed vineyards, including inventive blends like Big Fred's Red (1/2 Zin, 1/2 Sangiovese). Visitors can sample wines in the tasting room, which also offers a variety of prepared sauces and olive oils, or with Italian-inflected food from Mama's Trattoria. To see the place from an especially unique perspective, try booking the Renzoni hot air balloon. robertrenzonivineyards.com

South Coast Winery Resort & Spa/Carter Estate Winery

Real estate developer Jim Carter has merged his wine country dreams at this 38-acre resort property. On the wine side, the property produces a slew of different bottles under several labels, including the affordable South Coast Winery, the Wild Horse Peak, grown at elevation, and the pricey Carter Estate small lot wines. There are two tasting rooms here, including one for club members (non members pay $18-$22—on the weekend—for five tastes). There are also a number of book-ahead tour options. The well-equipped resort offers villas and suites (from around $200), spa treatments and the upscale Rose Restaurant. southcoastwinery.com

Best Time for Wine Tour

Temecula Valley is a year-round destination for wine lovers, but there are certain times of the year that are considered the best for wine tours. The following are some of the factors that can influence the best time to visit Temecula for a wine tour.

Temecula has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit for a wine tour is during the spring (March to May) or fall (September to November) when the weather is mild and pleasant. During these seasons, visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty of the valley and the vineyards without being bothered by the heat or cold.

Harvest Season

The harvest season in Temecula usually starts in late August and continues through October. This is the busiest time of the year for wineries as they work to harvest their grapes and prepare for the upcoming wine-making season. Visitors can experience the excitement of the harvest season by taking a tour during this time. They can witness the grape-picking process, taste fresh grape juice, and learn about the winemaking process.

Temecula hosts several wine-related events throughout the year, which can be a great time to visit for a wine tour. Some of the popular events include the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival, Temecula Valley Crush, and Temecula Valley Restaurant Month. Weekdays vs. Weekends

Wine tours in Temecula can get crowded on weekends, especially during peak season. Visitors who prefer a more relaxed and intimate experience should consider taking a tour on a weekday. They can avoid the crowds and enjoy a more personalized tour of the wineries.

In summary, the best time to visit Temecula for a wine tour is during the spring or fall when the weather is mild, and the valley is at its most beautiful. Visitors can also consider visiting during the harvest season or wine-related events. Taking a tour on a weekday can provide a more intimate and relaxed experience.

Planning Your Wine Tour

How Much Does Wine Tasting Cost?

Wine tasting in California has gotten quite a bit more expensive in the past few years. Gone are the days of free tastings. In fact, many regions are charging $20-40 per tasting. With this fee, you’ll get around 5 wine tasting pours. You can share a tasting at most places, which will cut down on the cost of it, and help you manage your intake.

Something I’m excited to tell you about is the  Priority Wine Pass , which helps me tasting fees a lot easier to swallow. The Pass is simply the easiest way to  save on wine tasting  in California.

Show your card at any of the over  300+ wineries  that accept the pass and start saving money. Many of the wine tasting discounts are 2-for-1. That means you and your tasting partner only pay for one tasting. If the winery usually charges $25 per tasting, you save $25. The pass is valid 365 days from the day you purchase it. It’s pretty awesome. We buy a new one every year. It’s good in California, Washington, and Oregon.

Temecula Tours

If you don’t want to drive yourself around to the wineries, you can choose to go on a wine tour in Temecula instead. This is a great way to have a carefree day with the joy of relaxed wine tastings and wine-paired lunch without worrying about driving.

I find it quite different than other California wine regions . It’s not posh or pretentious. In fact, it’s mostly still family-owned wineries. The wine might not be as refined as other areas either, but what it lacks it makes up for in charm and grandeur.

Leoness Cellars

Leoness Cellars tasting room

Leoness Cellars is a family-owned winery that offers a wide variety of wines, including Rose, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah. Their tasting room features two tasting bars and an exclusive outdoor area for club members. Their Vineyard Taste and Tour and The Perfect Wine Experience both include a tour of the winemaking facilities and a private patio tasting experience. These can be booked online in advance.

Another thing you should consider doing at Leoness is having a leisurely lunch with wine pairings. The restaurant has a nice patio for summer lunches and the farm-to-table menu features lots of local items. We had the Kenter Farms Caeser Salad and Creekstone Ranch Prime Skirt Steak. Both very good.

Bottaia Winery

Bottaia Winery

Bottaia Winery is a new winery built by the Ponte family to showcase the Italian varieties they’ve been farming since 1985. It’s an absolutely stunning property with more amenities than you can imagine. One of the most standout features is the pool that you can buy a pass for, with private cabanas, chaises, and a pool-side bar.

While they reserve the best spots in the house for club members, even if you’re just visiting you can enjoy their wines on the raised covered deck with a fabulous view of the vineyards, in the sophisticated living room lounge, at a seated tasting with charcuterie, in the barrel room where you can taste estate wines and one from the barrel, or in the wine blending lab where you’ll become a winemaker for the day.

Address:  35601 Rancho California Rd, Temecula, CA 92591 Hours: 11am – 6pm, closed Monday and Tuesday

Monte de Oro

Monte de Oro

Spanning over 21,000 square feet, Monte De Oro’s tasting room features cathedral ceilings, 3 tasting bars and a glass floor that looks down onto their barrel cellar, which houses over 900 barrels of wine. Although it wasn’t our favorite tasting experience of the trip, it is a beautiful spot to relax and enjoy a glass of wine.

I would recommend asking for a small taste of something you think you’ll like and enjoying by the glass rather than doing a tasting. We felt rather rushed and weren’t able to enjoy the tasting outside, which would have made it more appealing.

From Wednesday to Sunday, their bistro is serving a variety of casual lunch fare, pizzas and appetizers.

Address:  35820 Rancho California Rd, Temecula, CA 92591 Hours: 12:00pm – 5:00pm Monday & Tuesday; 11:00am – 5:00pm Wednesday – Sunday

Robert Renzoni Vineyards

Robert Renzoni Vineyards

Robert Renzoni Vineyards is a boutique winery that specializes in Italian varietals, like Montepulciano and Sangiovese. Their tasting room features a beautiful Tuscan-inspired architecture that transports you to Italy – they even have the hillside view to back it up. If you’re looking for a spot with a gorgeous view along with top notch wines, this is the winery to visit.

They were Southern California’s first 100% solar-powered winery. If you’re looking for a casual lunch, Mama Rosa’s Trattoria serves Italian comfort food from Thursday to Sunday. They have a brick oven for pizzas! Be aware that this winery is not dog friendly, in case you were hoping to bring your dog along.

Doffo Winery

Doffo Winery

Doffo Winery is a family-owned winery, opened by Marcelo Doffo in 1997, that specializes in small-batch, handcrafted wines. They offer a variety of wines, including Malbec, Zinfandel, and Tempranillo. You can do a counter or seated wine tasting, or order by the glass. Walk-ins are fine most of the time, but it’s wise to make a reservation for busier weekends.

The tasting room is quite unique in that it’s the home of the MotoDoffo Vintage Motorcycle Collection, consisting of more than 200 motorcycles and scooters spanning 8 decades from manufacturers like Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Gilera, Honda, CZ, Vespa, and more.

Address:  36083 Summitville St, Temecula, CA 92592 Hours: Daily 11am-5pm

Akash Winery

Akash Winery

Akash Winery is a family-owned and operated winery with a lovely open-air patio with stunning views of the surrounding vineyards. One thing we really like about Akash is that Saturday is 21+ only.

Akash Winery has an impressive selection of reds and whites, including their signature Parlez-Vous Rosé, which has received numerous awards and accolades. Visitors can indulge in a wine tasting experience that includes a flight of five wines for $30.

In addition to wine tasting, you can get woodfire pizza, salads and sandwiches from Friday to Sunday, or tacos Tuesday to Thursday. Just in case you also like beer, Akash Brewing shares the location. You can taste a few of their beers at the wine counter.

Danza del Sol

Fazeli cellars winery.

Fazeli Cellars

Fazeli Cellars has a very impressive winery, with dual staircases leading up to the tasting room that was designed with a tasteful mix of old-world elegance and contemporary charm, featuring breathtaking panoramic views of rolling vineyards and sun-kissed landscapes. Bizhan “BJ” Fazeli launched the first vintage in 2006 and they now have more than 20 varietals of boutique wines from Cabernet Sauvignon to Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah to Mourvedre, and Viognier to Chardonnay.

We had a wonderful wine tasting here at the bar. While it was very busy with large groups, we were still able to have an in-depth discussion about the wines with our pourer.

Their on-site restaurant, Baba Joon’s Kitchen, features Persian cuisine. The fusion of Persian flavors with modern culinary trends creates an exciting dining experience, making Fazeli Cellars not just a winery, but a gastronomic destination.

Address:  37320 De Portola Rd, Temecula, CA 92592 Hours: Daily 11am – 6pm

Oak Mountain Winery

Oak Mountain Winery

Oak Mountain Winery is an award-winning winery that offers a unique experience, particularly in the Cave that’s 104 feet below ground. It’s the first and only subterranean mined wine cave in Southern California.

One of the highlights of Oak Mountain Winery is its tasting room, which offers a wide variety of reds and other wines to sample. The tasting room is open daily from 11 am to 5 pm and you’ll get to try 6 wines for $20 ($25 on the weekends).

For those who want to enjoy a meal with their wine, you can dine underground at their Cave Café, with one of the most spectacular views in the valley. The Cave Café is open Monday-Sunday from 11am-5pm, reservations are not required but are highly recommended on the weekends. The winery also offers live music every Sunday.

Address:  36522 Vía Verde, Temecula, CA 92592 Hours: Daily 11am – 5pm

Ponte Winery

Ponte Winery is one of the oldest in the Temecula Valley and certainly one of the most prestigious. They offer walk-in tastings as well as reserved tastings. The winery is surrounded by nearly 300 acres of vineyards and rolling hills. It’s a very relaxing and inviting spot that’s perfect for an afternoon wine tasting. The tasting room is 21+.

Their restaurant, The Restaurant at Ponte, is pretty great too. Serving up fresh, locally-sourced dishes that perfectly pair with their wines, it’s one of the best spots for lunch. Trust us, their farm-to-table menu is very good. Be sure to get reservations early.

If you’re staying overnight in Temecula, their boutique hotel, Ponte Vineyard Inn, is the perfect getaway. With rustic charm, cozy rooms, and more of those stunning vineyard views, it’s the cherry on top of your wine-tasting adventure.

Address:  35053 Rancho California Rd, Temecula, CA 92591 Hours: Daily 11am – 5pm

Cougar Vineyard & Winery

Cougar Vineyard & Winery

Of all the wineries in Temecula that have awesome views, Cougar Vineyard & Winery is my favorite. Located up at the top of the hill on De Portola Road, this winery is a great place to enjoy the views and sip on some rare Italian varietals. It’s a family-owned, boutique winery that focuses entirely on Italian varietals – some you’ve probably never heard of.

For a tasting, you can choose 6 wines to try, including whites, reds, dessert wines and sparking wine. Take your glass out to the patio and sit in one of the Adirondack chairs while you sip your wine. It’s truly lovely.

While they won’t have a full-service restaurant, Sangio’s Deli is a great place to grab a cheese platter, a salad, or a hand-tossed pizza. They also have olive trees onsite and press their own olives, so be sure to give that olive oil a try too.

Address:  39870 De Portola Rd, Temecula, CA 92592 Hours: Daily 11am – 6pm

Are Reservations Necessary?

It’s always a good idea to make a reservation before visiting these winery. Many tasting rooms have limited space and can get crowded, especially on weekends. Reservations ensure that you have a spot reserved and can enjoy your wine tasting experience without any hassle.

However, there are many wineries that offer drop-in tasting. We’ve popped in to each one of the wineries we listed above and were accommodated right away, so it’s not necessary to make a reservation for a simple tasting. If you want to do a reserve tasting or special experience, or you want to have lunch, I would highly recommend a reservation.

Tasting Experience

The wine tasting experience in Temecula is unique and enjoyable. Most wineries offer a basic tasting that includes a selection of their most popular wines. Some wineries also offer reserve tastings, which include their premium wines. Reserve tastings are more expensive but provide an opportunity to taste some of the best wines that the winery has to offer.

Many of the wineries in Temecula have stunning views, and they take advantage of that with sprawling estates and beautiful architecture. Unlike many wine regions on California, almost every winery in Temecula has a restaurant and many of them also have hotels or guest rooms.

You’ll also find that many of them have outdoor patios, lounge chairs, live music, and even firepits you can sit around while enjoying your tasting. I personally think that makes Temecula a particularly great place to do wine tasting.

Food and Restaurants

When visiting Temecula wineries, you’ll find that the food and wine scene is just as impressive as the views. With on-site restaurants and trattorias, there are plenty of options to satisfy your hunger while enjoying the local wines.

  • Mama Rosa’s Trattoria – This is a must-visit for Italian food lovers. Their menu features classic Italian dishes, such as pasta, pizza, and antipasti in a casual setting. They also offer a variety of salads and entrees, all made with fresh, seasonal ingredients.
  • Meritage Restaurant – Meritage Restaurant is perfect for those looking for a fine dining experience. Their menu features classic French dishes, such as escargot, coq au vin, and bouillabaisse. They also offer a variety of California-inspired dishes, such as grilled lamb chops and pan-seared salmon. Their wine list includes a variety of Temecula wines, as well as some Spanish and French options.
  • Restaurant at Leoness Cellars – The restaurant is located in a separate building behind the winery. They serve up some seriously mouth-watering dishes made from locally sourced ingredients, with a menu that changes with the seasons. They were voted best winery restaurant by  USA Today ’s Reader’s Choice Awards for two consecutive years. Order the duck fat fries!
  • Baba Joon’s Kitchen – Baba Joon’s Kitchen, offers a culinary journey into Persian cuisine, with each dish masterfully prepared to complement their wines. The fusion of Persian flavors with modern culinary trends creates an exciting dining experience, making Fazeli Cellars not just a winery, but a gastronomic destination.

Europa Village

Accommodations

If you’re planning a visit to Temecula wine country, you’ll want to ensure that you have a comfortable place to stay. Fortunately, there are plenty of options available to suit all budgets and preferences. Below, we’ve highlighted some of the top accommodations to consider during your visit.

A great option is the Pechanga Casino Resort , especially if you like gambling and want to add more activities to your itinerary than just wine tasting. The Cove at Pechanga

Another great option is the Temecula Creek Inn , which offers a golf course, outdoor pool, and comfortable rooms with scenic views.

For a more unique and intimate experience, consider staying at a boutique hotel. One of the best options is the Inn at Europa Village . Hot Air Balloon Rides

One of the most popular activities in Temecula Wine Country is a hot air balloon ride. You can enjoy breathtaking views of the vineyards and the surrounding mountains while floating in the sky. Many wineries offer hot air balloon rides as part of their special events. This is a great way to celebrate a special occasion or to enjoy a romantic getaway.

You can book your hot air balloon ride here . It cost around $189 and each flight ends with a celebration toast of sparkling wine, cider, or mimosas, to mark the outing as an occasion to remember.

Sustainable Practices

One way Temecula wineries are promoting sustainability is through the use of organic and biodynamic farming practices. These methods prioritize soil health and biodiversity, and avoid the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. For example, Carter Estate Winery and Resort is certified sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, and uses cover crops, compost, and natural pest management techniques to maintain healthy vineyards.

Another sustainable practice is water conservation. Many wineries in Temecula use drip irrigation systems that deliver water directly to the roots of the vines, reducing water waste. For example, South Coast Winery Resort and Spa has implemented a water reclamation system that captures and recycles water used in the winemaking process.

In addition to sustainable farming and water conservation, some Temecula wineries are also using renewable energy sources. For example, Wilson Creek Winery has installed solar panels that provide over 70% of their energy needs, reducing their reliance on non-renewable sources.

2017 vintage estate montepulciano, bottaia winery ($65).

Location: 35601 Rancho California Rd, Temecula, CA 92591 951- 365-3388 Website

One of the newest kids on the Temecula Winery block, BOTTAIA is a chic, modern winery and tasting room, inspired by the refinement and luxury of Northern Italy.

BOTTAIA features a myriad of delectable white and red wines. But one of our favorites is definitely their estate Montepulciano— produced from a top central Italy grape varietal.

covered terrace with steep roof and set tables underneath, vineyards in the background

New oak barrels were purchased specifically to age this wine. Medium-bodied with scents of blackberry, toasted coconut and nutmeg, the wine exudes flavors of cedar, black cherry, and white pepper. This red pairs well with rich hearty Italian dishes such as meat-stuffed shells with red sauce.

2016 Riserva Syrah Robert Renzoni Vineyards ($95)

Location: 37350 De Portola Road, Temecula, CA 92592 951- 302-8466 Website

Robert Renzoni carries on a family tradition that began with his great-grandfather who worked in the vineyards of Fano, Italy in the 1880s. The magnificent Tuscan-inspired winery and tasting room features impressive Italian varietals of Temecula Valley wines.

Temecula Red Wine Grapes

Wine Enthusiast writer Matt Kettmann described the Renzoni treasure as “This long-aging style of this Syrah begins with toasty aromas of oak, boysenberry, black plum, and vanilla on the nose. The palate is very rounded with cassis and black-cherry flavors, wrapped in gingerbread and star anise spice: powerful and pleasant all-around.” This Syrah also received a Wine Enthusiast rating of 91.

Not only does the Renzoni estate feature an impressive selection of wines, their gift shop also carries a family recipe-marinara sauce and other homemade products.

2015 CS Cabernet Sauvignon Leoness Cellars ($65)

Location: 38311 De Portola Road, Temecula, CA 92592 951-302-7601 Website

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most widely recognized red wine grape varieties. And Temecula’s Leoness Cellars produces some spectacular reds including its magnificent 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Landscape shot of Temecula Valley with vineyards in front and hilly countryside in the back

Aged for 21 months in French and American oak barrels, this luscious red vino is bursting with blackberry and black currant fruit flavors, layered with subtle notes of vanilla, black licorice, and sweet oak. Elegant and well-balanced with a lovely lingering finish, this Cabernet is the perfect accompaniment for a nice thick juicy steak.

Cabernet Franc 2017 Ponte Vineyard ($56)

Location: 35053 Rancho California Road, Temecula, CA 92521 951-694-8855 Website

One of Ponte Vineyard’s mottos reads “If you like it, it’s good wine.” And Ponte definitely delivers with some impressive wines in a variety of whites and reds.

closeup of a wine glass and bottle top pouring red wine into glass -

Cabernet Franc fans will love Ponte’s 2017 production. It’s full-bodied with a complex structure and notes of blueberry and chipotle pepper and a smooth finish. This wine would make even the French proud as the varietal is primarily grown there, hence the name. It’s a perfect pair with grillables like ribeye, portobello mushroom, or lamb dishes.

Adjacent to the tasting room is the Ponte Vineyard Inn, a 90-room upscale boutique property with elegant accommodations. Imagine stepping out on your private patio or balcony in the morning and seeing hot air balloons gliding over the verdant mist-covered vineyards of Temecula.

2015 WHP Petite Syrah South Coast Winery Resort & Spa ($41)

Location: 34843 Rancho California Road, Temecula, CA 92541 951-587-9463 Website

Situated on 63 lush acres of rolling vineyards, South Coast offers not only a full-service resort and spa but an award-winning winery that includes an impressive selection of red, white, and sparkling wines .

South Coast’s Petite Syrah is a luscious red with the classic characteristic color of dark ink. It’s blueberry jam and leafy tobacco taste accompanied by rich smoky oak and pepper notes pairs well with ribs, roasted pork, and venison.

Mastering the artistry of French Méthode Champenoise, Carter Estate features some of the best sparkling wines we’ve tasted in the Temecula Valley. Our favorite is the Blanc de Blanc characterized by clean and crisp flavors and a nose of green apple with a touch of pear. It literally dances on the palate— a perfect refreshing sparkling beverage for a celebration or special occasion.

Carter Estate wines are 100% estate-grown, bottled and certified sustainable. Award-winning ribbons in their tasting room showcase the excellence of this estate’s wines.

2018 Chardonnay-Temecula Valley, Falkner Winery ($40)

Location: 40620 Calle Contento, Temecula, CA 92591 951- 676-8231 Website

Situated on a picturesque Temecula hill surrounded by rolling vineyards, this winery produces some incredible reds and whites.

One of our very favorite Chardonnays is produced here using about 40%- barrel fermentation. This makes for a well-balanced Chardonnay, less oaky than some sporting green apple, cinnamon, and Meyer Lemon flavors. The finish is clean and tart making this a very easy drinking wine that pairs well with most seafood and chicken dishes.

Falkner is noted for the quality of their whites as their 2015 Chardonnay and 2018 Sauvignon Blanc were both 90-point Wine Enthusiast winners.

When all is said and done, remember that each person has their favorite wineries and varietals. And each person’s palate is different. Even professional wine judges don’t always agree 100%. It’s more important to drink what you love, and make your own decision if a higher-priced wine is worth the splurge.

Some really great choices on this list. I was expecting another list touting that nasty almond “champagne” from Wilson Creek. The montepulciano and cab francs I’ve had our of Temecula have been super for the most part. Can’t wait to try some of the wineries on here I haven’t been to yet
