PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting Review: A PGA Pro’s Experience

I recently took one of my students for a full bag fitting at our local PGA TOUR Superstore in Altamonte Springs, FL. In doing so, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to do a professional PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting review.

Our  PGA TOUR Superstore full bag fitting was an amazing experience for us. Our fitter, Charles Moore, was a master fitter with over 20 years of experience. He used high-end technology like the Trackman Launch Monitor and SAMPuttLab putting analysis tools and software to diagnose any issues.

The three-hour session ran through all of the clubs in Lincoln’s bag. Charles started with irons, followed by Lincoln’s putter, wedges, and finally with his woods and driver. The time flew by, and the insights we learned will surely help Lincoln going forward.

After a 3-hour fitting, a few things we learned were:

  • Change Lincoln’s 7-iron to a more upright degree to tighten his shot distribution.
  • Shorten his driver to gain more control off the tee.
  • Minor tweaks were made to his wedge lofts, gapping, and bounce.
  • The putter was looking good.

I’ve been a golf instructor for 27 years and have been certified by the PGA for 15 years, and this is my first full bag fitting. After this experience, I’m convinced that a proper fitting is something all serious golfers need to do.

The only drawback could be the cost. Individual club fittings start at $40 to $50, while a full bag fitting at PGA Tour Superstore costs $99 to $300 ( check your local PGATSS stores pricing ). The more expensive fittings use more premium technology to analyze your swing.

If you spend hundreds or thousands on golf equipment and hours at the range or course, I think most golfers will consider this a solid investment. But please read on to decide for yourself, and at the end, I dive into the specific costs.

A PGA TOUR Superstore club fitting uses readings from technology such as Trackman  and SAM PuttLab  to recommend the best way to improve issues with your game.

That was exactly what our Studio Fitter, Charles, did as we went through the fitting, starting with Lincoln’s irons and then moving on to his putter, wedges, woods, and driver.

Here is a quick bit about our Studio Fitter:  Charles is originally from Gainesville, Florida. It was clear he had a true passion for golf. In talking with him, we found out he began his golf journey at 7, and today, at age 45, he is still just as passionate. He originally got his start in the golf industry in 1995, where he worked as a caddy, and then moved into the retail space in 1999, working for a store in Myrtle Beach. Charles has been a master fitter for over 20 years  after becoming certified through major golf vendors, including Callaway, Taylormade, PING, and Titleist.

I was thoroughly impressed with the Studio Full Bag Fitting at the PGA TOUR Superstore, and I know that my student Lincoln was also. The following are the positives and negatives we both took from the experience.

  • It can help you get a good understanding of your swing tendencies
  • It can help you see where your equipment is helping you
  • It can help you see where your equipment is hurting you
  • It can instantly help you improve your game with equipment modifications
  • A fitting is not a cure-all for an ailing game, but a compliment to lessons as well as practice
  • It could be considered too expensive for some (I’ll cover the full costs below)

Lincoln and I will remember the Studio Full Bag fitting at the PGA TOUR Superstore in Altamonte Springs, FL, for years. Our fitter, Charles, shared his decades of experience and sincerely wanted to help Lincoln reach his full potential.

Additionally, all the various reports from tools like Trackman and SAMPuttLab provide a great deal of valuable information after the fitting. As a coach , that information is great for me to go through with my students after a fitting session and when we are at our next session together.

I would absolutely recommend it to anyone to go through a fitting, even if it’s not a full-bag fitting.

Lincoln will work with a 7-iron with a more upright degree to help balance his contact on the face. After looking through the SAMPuttLab reports, it was good to see that his putting and putter were right on. His wedges also looked good, with some minor suggestions to change the gapping or the distance between clubs. He could also tweak the widget lofts and bounce.

The driver fitting takes the most time, and Charles had some expert insight to share. He noticed Lincoln’s driver was too long, and this is a common problem for many golfers. He cut down his driver right there, which should immediately save Lincoln some strokes.

I’ll go into more detail as I cover each club and what was looked at and share some pictures.

“It was cool to learn about different aspects of equipment and how it can affect your game. It was very helpful and helped coach and I make  some good decisions about equipment changes I should make to help further the work we are doing together. It’s crazy that only a degree or two of lie angle can make such a big difference. Getting a fitting can help a golfer in many ways, and it might be a good idea to consider getting one done.” ~ Lincoln Nascimento [My student who received the fitting]

In our club fitting , Charles had Lincoln warm up and get loose in the hitting bay. After that, Lincoln hit several 7-irons to get some baseline numbers from Trackman . Key areas that were looked at included:

  • Where on the clubface strikes were made at impact
  • The path Lincoln was swinging as he approached the ball at impact
  • Whether his clubface was square, open, or closed at impact
  • His spin rate on shots
  • His overall shot dispersion

Once these baseline readings were made, Charles measured the lie angle of Lincoln’s 7-iron and its length . These factors often play a key role in the patterns a golfer shows in their shots.

Lincoln’s irons were pretty close to the standards for the club brand he plays.

Result: With all the information gathered, Lincoln hit a second 7-iron that was more upright than the standard . This significantly helped balance out where on the face he was making contact with the ball and tightened up his shot distribution.

Next up was the putter fitting stage of the session. The Science and Motion , or SAM PuttLab, was used in this area. This awesome technology helps take a deep dive into the dynamics of golfers’ putting and how their path and face react at impact.

putter fitting at pga tour superstore during full bag club fitting

Putting is very much an individual thing and is as much a feel and comfort thing as anything else.  If a golfer can consistently deliver the putter face squarely into the ball at impact, then how they accomplish that does not matter. What you are looking for with poor putters is issues with face control   at impact  and things like distance control.

Lincoln’s putting is consistent regarding how his face comes into the ball at impact. While there were some suggestions for putters to try, we were both pleased with how his baseline numbers looked .

Result: No changes were made to his putter.

Charles Moore, master fitter, works with golf student at launch monitor during PGA TOUR Superstore full bag club fitting

Following the putter fitting, Charles worked with Lincoln on his wedges. With a wedge fitting, like with the irons, the fitter looks first to see a player’s tendencies.

Charles had Lincoln hit several full swing, half swing, and open face lob shots with each of his wedges . Things that are being looked at with the wedges include:

  • The bounce on each wedge
  • The grind on each wedge
  • Gapping a player has between wedges
  • Club length, shaft type, and grip

Result:  Based on the findings of Lincoln’s tendencies and performance with his current wedges, some suggestions were made to slightly modify his gapping, lofts, and ever so slight changes to his bounces.

driver fitting at PGA Tour Superstore full bag club fitting using trackman hitting bays and launch monitor

The final stage of Lincoln’s full bag fitting focused on his woods and driver. Most of the time spent in this area was focused on his driver.

Once again, the process is pretty much the same as was the case with the irons and wedges. Lincoln started by getting warmed up and then proceeded to get into capturing data with his current driver.

Again, a baseline is set to see his tendencies, and then the actual fitting or suggesting of changes is made.

Key Takeaway: The biggest insight with this portion of the fitting was the massive difference between the length of a driver on the PGA TOUR vs. what the average amateur carries in their bag. The PGA TOUR average driver length is 44.75”, compared to the average amateur’s driver clocking in at 45.5” to 46.5”.

Charles quickly pointed out that most drivers are simply too long for the average golfer , which is a big reason why control is such an issue.

Result: Lincoln and I agreed, and he chopped his driver down to help gain more control off the tee.

Now, this may sound great, but what is the cost of a PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting? Well, types and pricing may vary depending on the store location. The following is pricing at my local store in Altamonte Springs, FL.

At stores using technology like the Trackman and SAMPuttLab, most individual club fittings range between $49 and $99. The Full Bag Fittings cost $300.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • A 25-minute performance evaluation for any club: $49
  • A fairway, hybrid, or wedge fitting: $59
  • A driver, iron, or putter fitting: $99
  • A Studio Full Bag Fitting (3 hours): $300

At stores that don’t use as expensive technology, you’ll pay around $40 for an individual club fitting. The Full Bag Fittings cost $99.

Club Fittings to Consider:

Our fitter, Charles, walked us through a prioritized list of clubs you should get a fitting for if you couldn’t afford a full bag fitting or just need help with one or two clubs.

Each store has varying options and prices, so check the offerings and prices at your local store . You can book a reservation now if you’re ready.

I always believed that combining regular golf instruction and club fitting could pay big dividends to any golfer. After going through a full-bag three-hour fitting session at the PGA TOUR Superstore, I am now convinced that a proper fitting is something that all serious golfers need to do.

Golf equipment off the shelf or purchased online is not one-size-fits-all.

  • Having clubs that are too long, too heavy, or don’t have the right lie angle can absolutely cost you strokes.
  • Having a toe-hang putter, when you are better off with a face-balanced one, can cost you strokes.
  • Having wedges with improper gapping or an incorrect bounce can also cost you strokes.

Getting a proper fitting done can truly help your game.

“Regardless of your level of play, getting custom-fit golf clubs offers some key advantages. From drivers to putters, it’s important that each club in the bag adds to a player’s skills while compensating for their tendencies. It is far better to improve your game using golf clubs that match your swing characteristics and don’t impede your improvement.” Alyssa Hockenbury, General Manager of PGA TOUR Superstore in Altamonte Springs, FL

PGA TOUR Superstore uses varies types of high-quality launch monitors by Trackman and Foresight GC2s. Both are premium launch monitors professional golfers use to track and improve their swing. Trackman is the leader in the launch monitor sector of the game. The data from the Trackman monitors at the PGA TOUR Superstore are very accurate.

PGA TOUR Superstore is owned and operated by Arthur Blank, the co-founder of Home Depot. Blank is also the owner of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC.

Employees of the PGA TOUR Superstore do not make commissions. Sales associates won’t try to pressure you for a sale to make a commission. Glassdoor.com says they make between $40 and $63K annually regardless. Indeed.com states Retail Sales Associates make around $14 per hour.

You can try out a large selection of irons and other clubs at the PGA TOUR Superstore. The best way to truly see what clubs may be best for you is to get a fitting while there. If you are buying clubs, you can get a basic fitting for free as the associate helps you find the right clubs.

You can get free fittings at PGA TOUR Superstores if you are buying clubs from them. A rep will let you test out the equipment in the hitting bays and help you find the right clubs to fit your swing tendencies. But it won’t be as in-depth as a full-bag club fitting. Pricing varies by location, but you can review the prices at your local PGATSS and book a reservation online.

I hope this PGA TOUR Superstore Club Fitting review has proven helpful for you. It is crazy to me, after 27 years working in the golf business and the last 15 years as a PGA Professional, that I have never watched a full bag fitting in its entirety.

When I left the fitting my student Lincoln went through at the PGA TOUR Superstore, my appreciation for the work club fitters do to help people enjoy the game more grew by leaps and bounds. I sincerely appreciated my experience at the PGATSS and know my student also gained a great deal from it.

If you have been on the fence about getting professionally fit for golf equipment, I will say this… don’t hesitate any longer, as a fitting can be what your game has been looking for.

PGA Superstore Fitting Review: In-Depth Analysis

In the world of golf, nothing is quite as satisfying as the perfect swing. But to achieve that perfect swing, you need the perfect club.

Every golfer, from the seasoned pro to the weekend warrior, deserves equipment that fits their unique swing mechanics.

Enter the PGA Superstore, a fitting institution that promises just that: a tailor-made golfing experience that could transform your game.

This review will take a deep dive into the world of PGA Superstore fittings and break down their process, offerings, and customer experience to provide an all-encompassing perspective of what you can expect.

PGA Superstore Fitting Review

The Fitting Process – A Personalized Approach

Upon entering the PGA Superstore, clients are greeted by knowledgeable and friendly staff, who carefully guide them through the fitting process.

This personalized approach begins with an interview to assess your skill level, goals, and any physical limitations.

The fitter then analyzes your existing equipment, swing mechanics, and launch data, which sets the foundation for the club fitting experience.

Cutting-Edge Technology

The PGA Superstore employs state-of-the-art technology during the fitting process to ensure the most accurate and precise results.

Clients are fitted in dedicated hitting bays equipped with launch monitors, such as TrackMan or Foresight GCQuad, which capture crucial data points like ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, and carry distance.

This advanced technology, combined with the expertise of professional fitters, enables the customization of club specifications to suit each golfer’s unique swing characteristics.

A Comprehensive Club Selection

One of the most significant advantages of the PGA Superstore fitting experience is the extensive selection of clubs from leading manufacturers, such as Callaway, TaylorMade, Ping, Titleist, and more.

This diverse range ensures that the fitting isn’t skewed by limited club or shaft options and allows you to find a club that feels just right.

PGA Superstore also offers a broad range of club customization options, from lie angle adjustments to grip replacements, further enhancing the tailored experience.

Furthermore, the PGA Superstore fitting experience is not exclusive to the elite players. Their services cater to all skill levels, from the eager beginner to the seasoned professional.

This inclusivity, coupled with the relaxed, no-pressure environment, means golfers of all abilities can benefit from their expertise.

However, it’s important to note that while the PGA Superstore fitting service is comprehensive, it comes with a price tag.

Fitting fees, although comparable to those of other major golf retailers, may feel steep to some, particularly those new to the sport.

It’s an investment, certainly, but one that many will argue is worth making for the noticeable improvement it can bring to your game.

Irons, Woods, and Putter Fittings

The PGA Superstore fitting services cover every club in the bag, offering comprehensive fitting solutions for irons, woods, and putters.

Iron fittings focus on factors like shaft material, flex, length, and lie angle, while wood fittings emphasize loft, shaft, and clubhead design.

The putter fitting process, often overlooked, is a critical aspect of the overall experience, as it can significantly impact a golfer’s short game.

Through the use of specialized technology, such as the SAM PuttLab, the fitter analyzes a golfer’s putting stroke and recommends the ideal putter type, length, and lie angle to improve consistency and accuracy on the greens.

Additional Services and Support

The PGA Superstore fitting process does not end once the optimal club specifications are determined.

Clients receive continued support, including club adjustments and fine-tuning, to ensure their equipment remains tailored to their evolving needs.

Furthermore, the PGA Superstore offers extensive follow-up services, such as golf lessons and practice facilities, to help golfers refine their technique and develop a deeper understanding of the game.

This holistic approach to the golfing experience sets the PGA Superstore apart from competitors, as it emphasizes ongoing improvement and fosters a lasting relationship with clients.

The PGA Superstore fitting experience is an invaluable resource for golfers seeking to elevate their game through custom-fit equipment.

The combination of personalized attention, cutting-edge technology, and an extensive club selection ensures a comprehensive and accurate fitting process that caters to each golfer’s unique needs.

While the cost of a professional fitting session may be a concern for some, the long-term benefits, such as improved consistency, increased distance, and overall enhanced performance, make the investment worthwhile.

Furthermore, the PGA Superstore’s commitment to providing ongoing support and additional services, like golf lessons and practice facilities, demonstrates its dedication to helping clients achieve their full potential on the course.

If you’re a golfer looking to take your game to the next level, the PGA Superstore fitting experience is a must-try.

With a team of experts, state-of-the-art technology, and a wide selection of clubs, this fitting process will provide you with the tools and knowledge necessary to unlock your golfing potential.

Where to Get Fit: America's Best Clubfitters

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/7/Best-Clubfitters-23-24.png

Our 2023-24 list of America’s 100 Best Clubfitters, which first debuted in 2011, considers all sorts of facilities that offer clubfitting access to the general public. Those include independent shops, practice ranges and full-service performance centers, large retail stores, resorts, golf courses and national chains. More than 1,000 facilities were reviewed, which included nomination forms that detailed each facility’s resources, tools, expertise and fitting methodolgy. We also conducted a poll of leading equipment-company experts and our nationwide panel of more than 2,000 Golf Digest course-ranking panelists. In addition, for the first time ever, an online poll of Golf Digest subscribers generated nearly 10,000 votes. Those facilities earning the highest marks are highlighted here in two categories: The state-by-state heading lists 100 independent, local operations. Also listed under each state, we include the top rated individual stores for several national brands.

What should you look for in a good clubfitting operation? First, an array of manufacturers to choose from. It’s what is known in the industry as being “brand agnostic.” Second, insist on expertise with modern clubfitting technology. That means launch monitors and other measurement devices that detail what each tweak does to a club’s performance, not just on one hit but for the average of your best and less-than-best strikes.

Third, and maybe most important, find the fitter who is asking and listening more than he or she is selling. The right-fitting clubs don’t always require a purchase, but they do require someone dedicated to your best interests.

There is no question fitting has become one of the most important innovations in golf over the last two decades. A recent study by Golf Datatech found that 94 percent of those who've been fit for their clubs 94 percent of those said they were at least “satisfied” with their most recent fitting. Still not convinced that a fitting is right for you? We had some expert fitters whose facilities have been on our Best Clubfitters list every year since its inception, answer a few common questions.

I’m not a good enough player to be fit, right? How can you tell what’s right for me when I don’t make consistent swings?

I love this question!! My first response is how do you know it’s not the equipment that causing the inconsistency? Secondly, I admit the pros should be the most consistent of any golfer but when you watch tournament coverage you can see any pro on any given day guide a ball into the trees, hit one short to the green or even miss a 4 footer. A fitting is not based on one shot with a clubs it is an average of shots. A good fitter should be able to isolate the extraordinary shots, good or bad to ensure you get the right spec for new stix.— Jim McCleery, McGolf Custom Clubs, Waverly, Ohio

If I got fit for my driver by a 100 Best Clubfitter a year ago, is there any reason to get fit for another new driver this year? What if I was fit three years ago? Five years ago?

I believe you get fit when you feel like you are not getting the most out of your equipment. If that’s a year, then yes get fit, but more likely it’s going to be every 3 or 5 years. Sometimes even though you don’t feel you are getting everything from your clubs you truly are and at least the fitting will confirm that, and you can have the confidence that you are playing the very best. That said, over a three week period last year, we tested every piece of new equipment with 20 golfers varying in handicap most of whom had recently been fit. We found that in each category: driver, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, and putters, there was always one piece of new gear that provided an improvement over a golfer's existing equipment.— Nick Sherburne, Club Champion

Why would I not choose the driver that produced the single longest hit of all the clubs I tried?

Golf is not a home run sport. Example my longest driver A is 280 and my average drive is 250. With driver B my longest drive is 270 but my average is 260 I will give the player Driver B all day. But more importantly what is the dispersion, drives that land in the fairway consistently, roll father and make the game easier. Launch monitors give the same roll to the shots that go straight and the one’s that would have gone out of bounds. — Woody Lashen, Pete’s Golf, Mineola, N.Y.

I know my specs, know what I like. What are you going to tell me that I don’t already know?

A lot!! First of all are you aware that your “specs” may or may not apply to specific clubs you are looking to purchase. “Specs” are not the same from brand to brand and even within the same manufacturer depending upon model the “Specs” may not be the same. As such, I could tell a prospective fitting customer “a lot” that thinks they know their “specs”, but better than tell them I could show any player within a few minutes how their “specs” may not be what they actually want to purchase. Moreover, even if they think they know what they like—have they tried everything to know for certain that what they think they like is actually what is right for them. There are so many different models and aftermarket shafts that it is unlikely a player who thinks they know what they want has actually tried other models and/or shafts that might be even better for them. — Craig Zimmerman, Redtail Golf Center, Beaverton, Ore.

There you have it. The value of a fitting is undeniable. The list below is a great place to take advantage of all that untapped potential waiting for you (and your fitter) to discover.

No questions, but I've worked some with one of their tour van fitters at the location near me and they have a quality setup (GCQuad and ample shaft/club options).  I think if the fitter is decent you will have an enjoyable experience.

Really interested to hear all about it. I'm trying to decide where to get fitted this spring and they're opening up a store this weekend about an hour from me. Sent from my SM-G960U using MyGolfSpy mobile app

I’ll be curious to hear if the only shafts they have are just the stock options sent with the fitting heads, and if there are any +1” options throughout the choices of shafts.

Have fun!!!!

I also noticed that some PGA Superstores offer Van Fitting for $49.99 and others offer Studio Fitting for $99.99.  Both options appear to be 90 minutes, but it seems like any particular store will offer one or the other, but not both.  I have called multiple stores asking for an explanation on the difference, and no one can provide an answer.  Does anyone here know the difference, other than price?

Based on what I’ve seen on their website when looking at different fitting options for other threads the studio fitting is what used to be the tour van fitting. I didn’t see a thing about a van fitting on their page and when i selected different locations that all showed studio fitting.

Finally, my search is over! I can't believe how hard it's been to find someone extremely knowledgeable to fit me in new clubs who doesn't feel the need to mansplain me or push a pink flowered club set...Female golfers out there know what I'm sayin'! Daniel the general manager is the guy! I walked in yesterday to get a putter and lucked out with him helping me find the perfect one. I immediately booked with him for a full set fitting and came back in today. I just walked out with a set of irons that I love and feel great about them. PGA Tour Superstore has a gem. Highly professional, respectful, and genuinely interested that I was walking out with the best set for me. Thank you!

Went to this store to spend $1000 on irons. Was there for 30 minutes, barely anyone in the store, and no one asked if i needed help

Tampa finally gets a PGA Superstore! It's in the former SteinMart space in Carrollwood. Huge store, carrying anything and everything a golfer would need. Plus a tennis and pickle ball department. About half the store is clothing, shoes, etc., and the other half has golf clubs and hitting bays where you can demo clubs. Be sure to sign up for the loyalty program where you get points for your purchases.

I needed to buy some golf balls for my dad. He has pretty unique taste when it comes to balls. However, pleasantly to my surprise, they have so, so much more than just balls. Every golf ball imaginable, massive selection of gloves, bags, clubs, and merchandise! On top of all this, they have simulated ranges to test your clubs before buying, with fine tuning to maximize your performance based on swing speed and other factors. A huge putting range to test putters before choosing the perfect one, and some of the most helpful staff members truly to accommodate all your needs. This place is a must go if you are serious about your golf game. I will be back!

Photo of Jason C.

After reaching out to the management to see about getting Wingman speaker replaced under warranty they really came through clutch. There was an issue locating my receipt in the system after a few phone calls. I decided to stop in and speak with the manager to see what could be done. Without hesitation, he handed me a new one as he was holding the one I purchased at their grand opening and said "hit em straight" Customer service like this is hard to come by and I will be giving all of my business to this location moving forward. Great experience! - Jason C.

Photo of Manuel C.

Super store for all your golf needs. Fitting bays are really cool. An they offer hitting bays also. They carry all the top golf brands. Nike Adidas PGA an much more. The staff is awesome as well they know there stuff when it comes to golf!

Photo of Brett M.

Jim was exceptional. I bought a set of irons in March with the 90-day playability agreement, brought them back with 5 days left to work out some kinks. There ended up being an incorrect sizing issue that was missed the first time. I also wanted to look at a new club head as well. He brought out a very similar head, forged, and I fell in love. All in all, Jim was very personable, friendly, and helpful. He goes the route of finding what is truly best for you, rather than trying to sell the newest and most expensive items; helps that he's from Michigan too. Go Blue.

Best Golf Drivers for 2024

Paul Liberatore is the founder of Golfers Authority , which reviews the world's best golf products and gear. This post contains affiliate links, where we may receive a percentage of any sale made from the links on this page. Prices and availability are accurate as of the time of publication.

If there’s one club in the bag weekend warriors like you and I love to hit, it's the driver.  There’s nothing more satisfying than busting a tee shot down the middle of the fairway 30 yards past your playing partners.

But there’s a problem that plagues most golfers.  It’s that they’re playing with the wrong driver.  If you fall into this category, chances are you’re costing yourself valuable yards off the tee and probably missing too many fairways.

But how are you supposed to know what driver is best for you?  Driver technology is constantly changing, and there are countless options.  Making the right choice can seem overwhelming if you don’t know what to look for.

But don’t worry.  I’ve got some good news.  I’ve spent the better part of 2024 researching and testing all the latest and most significant drivers and have compiled a list of what I consider to be the best of the best.

What Should You Look for In a Driver?

The driver is the most expensive club in your bag.  If you purchase something brand-new, it's probably an investment north of $500.  To that end, it’s vitally important that you consider several different factors before a final decision.

The first thing you need to consider is your budget.  While you might be tempted to buy the most expensive driver on the market because it’s what everyone else is playing, there’s a good chance it’s not the best choice for you.  The bottom line is you need to make sure you can afford the driver you will buy.

Once you’ve established how much money you can spend on a driver, you should schedule a fitting with a PGA Professional.  More than any other club in your bag, it’s imperative that you get properly fitted for your driver.  During a formal fitting, your PGA Pro will identify your best driver head, loft and shaft type.  Even though this process might cost you a little extra money and take some time, it’s more than worth it.  Whatever you do, always try to get fitted before buying a new driver.

After you’ve gone through a fitting and narrowed down your prospective list of drivers to a select few, you must choose the one you’re the most comfortable with.  Like any other club, you should feel confident standing over your driver.  Not only that, but you should like the way it feels and sounds.

Now that we’ve established a few important factors to consider when buying a new driver let’s look at our top drivers for 2024.

Longest Driver – Ping G430 LST Driver

For years, Ping has been known for making some of the most forgiving drivers in golf.  While that trend continues this year, they’ve also produced one of the longest: the G430 LST.

This driver helps golfers with fast swing speeds reduce spin and increase ball speed.  That’s the ticket when it comes to maximizing distance.

The LST features a Carbonfly Wrap crown that covers both the heel and toe.  This ultra-lightweight design allows the CG to be set lower in the clubhead allowing for both increased ball speed and MOI.

The T9S+ forged clubface uses variable thickness to maximize deflection and again, increase ball speed.

Get the best price on the PING G430 LST through our partners at PGA TOUR Superstore

An all-new internal rib structure creates a sound that’s neither tinny or dead.  It’s downright solid.

Variable roll radius lessens loft on the bottom of the clubface to reduce spin and maximize distance on thin drives.

The 22-gram backweight is adjustable and allows you to customize launch conditions as well and neutral, draw, and fade biases.

As we’d expect from Ping, the G430 LST is loaded with advanced tech and design features that all work to produce maximum ball speeds and distance.

Best Looking Driver – TaylorMade Qi10 Driver

It should come as little shock that a TaylorMade driver sits at the top of our list as the best-looking driver in 2024.  For as long as we can remember, they’ve been making some of the most aesthetically pleasing drivers in the game.

But it’s not all about great looks with the Qi10.  It’s also one of the most forgiving on the market thanks to multi-material construction that’s engineered to deliver optimal MOI.

Compared to previous TaylorMade drivers, the CG in the Qi10 has been lowered in the clubhead to help golfers get the ball in the air while increasing forgiveness at the same time.

Like all the drivers in the Qi10 family, this driver features a carbon crown that covers some 97% of the club’s top.  Because the crown is so light, weight has been redistributed elsewhere in the club where it can be better optimized.

Get the best price on the TaylorMade Qi10 driver through our partner at PGA TOUR Superstore

The patented 60X Carbon Twist Face is one of the lightest on the market.  As such, it maximizes energy transfer between the clubhead and ball at impact.  It also increases performance on off-center strikes.

The trademark Thru-Slot Speed Pocket works to preserve ball speed, especially on strikes low on the clubface.

The Qi10 also offers plenty of adjustability options including lofts that can be moved two degrees weaker or stronger from standard.

While the TaylorMade Qi10 is a sexy looking driver, there’s a whole lot more to the story in terms of performance.

Editor’s Choice - PXG O311 Black Ops Driver

Earlier this year, I had the chance to spend some time with the PXG staff at their headquarters at Scottsdale National Golf Club here in Phoenix.  It was an amazing experience, and I had the chance to go through a custom fitting for the PXG O311 Black Ops Driver.

Designed to be a high-launch, low-spin driver, the O311’s AMF Technology is some of the most advanced I’ve ever seen in a driver.  It incorporates a proprietary titanium alloy to ensure consistent and efficient transfer of energy between the clubhead and ball at strategic points across the entire clubface.

Composite crown and sole inserts are made from high-grade carbon fiber that undergoes a highly intricate compression process.  The use of such lightweight material allows mass to be distributed into other areas of the clubhead where it can be used more efficiently to increase MOI and therefore forgiveness.  It also moves the CG lower and further back in the clubhead promoting a higher launch.

The O311 Black Ops also comes with three interchangeable weights that allow you to optimize, spin, fade, and draw bias settings.

Non-Uniform Bulge and Roll Design strategically varies the vertical and horizontal curvatures across the clubface to not only further increase forgiveness, but optimize performance on off-center strikes.

Lastly, Natural Frequency Optimization improves this driver’s feel and sound.

Overall, the PXG O311 Black Ops driver is one of the best I’ve ever hit.  I put it in my bag straight away and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Most Forgiving Driver – Ping G430 Max 10K Driver

For years, Ping has consistently made the most forgiving drivers in golf.  That’s why it’s no surprise that golfers across the board (me included) think the G430 Max 10K is the most forgiving in 2024.

As its name would suggest, the G430 Max 10K exceeds the 10,000 g-cm2 combined MOI threshold making it the most forgiving driver Ping has ever made.

Combined with a fixed back weight, oversize head profile, and a Carbonfly Wrap crown, you’ve got the ultimate recipe for helping both solid shots and mishits soar straight down the middle of the fairway.

The clubface is made from T9S+ titanium which optimizes flex for explosive ball speeds and increased distance.

Get the best price on the Ping G430 Max through our partner at PGA TOUR Superstore

Trajectory Tuning 2.0 utilizes an aerodynamic hosel sleeve that lets you customize the club in eight different positions for optimal launch and ball flight conditions.

Lastly, unlike a lot of Ping drivers that have sounded tinny in the past, the G430 Max 10K produces a more muted, solid sound that’s pleasing to the ear.

If you struggle finding the center of the clubface with your current driver, I highly recommend taking the Ping G430 Max 10K out for a test drive.

Best Sounding Driver – Cobra DarkSpeed X Driver

Out of all the drivers I tested this year, the Cobra DarkSpeed X sounded the best.  There wasn’t anything tinny about it, yet it didn’t sound dull or dead either.  Solid is the best word I can use to describe its sound.

More than that though, this driver performs on all fronts.  It packs a powerful punch of speed, forgiveness, high launch, and stability.

Like the DarkSpeed LS, Cobra’s DarkSpeed X driver was conceived by aerospace engineers using space-grade materials.

You can easily optimize your spin conditions with the DarkSpeed X thanks to adjustable back and forward weights.

Get the best price on the DarkSpeed X driver through our partner at PGA TOUR Superstore

The DarkSpeed X sees Cobra’s patented PWR-BRIDGE moved lower and farther forward in the clubhead than in years past.  This increases ball speeds, minimizes spin, and increases club-to-ball energy transfer at impact.

The PWRSHELL L-Cup face is also 10% larger.  This provides golfers more forgiveness.

The upgraded H.O.T. clubface design also maximizes the efficiency of both spin and speed across the clubface.

Out of the drivers in this year’s Cobra family, the DarkSpeed X not only sounds the best, it performs at an elite level too.

Best Driver for Distance – Callaway Paradym AI Smoke Max Driver

The Callaway Paradym AI Smoke line of drivers just might be the most comprehensive for 2024.

For golfers looking for raw distance above all else, there’s no better driver in 2024 than the Callaway Paradym AI Smoke Max driver.

Like the others in this family the Max driver’s clubface is designed by AI that’s taken into account hundreds of thousands of different swing iterations.  The end result is more than 20 micro deflections that act as sweet spots all over the clubface.  So, no matter where you catch the ball on the face, maximum performance is guaranteed.

The AI Smoke Max also features adjustable perimeter weighting in the back of the clubhead allowing for up to 19 yards of shot shape correction.

Lastly, the 360-degree carbon fiber chassis is 15% lighter than last year’s Paradym model.  This allows weight to be concentrated in more strategic parts of the clubhead.  The result is less drag, more speed, and forgiveness.

If you want to bomb it like the big boys, check out the Callaway Paradym AI Smoke Max driver.

Best Driver for Fast Swing Speeds – TaylorMade Qi10 LS

If you swing the club at a fast rate of speed, chances are a driver that produces minimal spin is going to benefit you most.

The TaylorMade Qi10 LS driver is designed to deliver exactly that.  Low spin conditions are due in large part to the deep face and compact head shape.

Even though this driver is designed for elite players, it still offers plenty of forgiveness thanks to multi-material construction that maximizes MOI.

An infinity carbon fiber crown covers 97% of the top of the clubhead.  This allows for maximum mass distribution and even more forgiveness.

In the back of the club, you’ll find an 18-gram moveable weight that not only allows for shot shape optimization, but decreases spin and reduces turbulence.

The Qi10 LS also features TaylorMade’s third generation of the Twist Face which is made of 60X carbon fiber.  Lighter than traditional titanium and most other alloys on the market, this material reduces weight and maximizes energy transfer at impact.

Played by the likes of Tiger Woods and Tommy Fleetwood, the TaylorMade Qi10 LS driver is sure to be a head-turner for better players with faster than average swing speeds this year.

Best Driver for Most People – Titleist TSR2 Driver

For decades, Titleist has been a stalwart in the golf club industry when it comes to producing quality drivers.  The all-new TSR2 is no different.

Compared to last year’s model, the body of the new TSR2 is slimmed down, but its performance features are ramped up.

The new head shape is one of the most aerodynamic Titleist has ever produced.  Golfers are able to generate more clubhead speed which results in faster ball speeds and more distance.

The Multi-Plateau Variable Thickness clubface optimizes shot performance not only on center strikes, but mishits as well.

The CG has been moved forward and lower in the clubhead eliminating unnecessary spin while increasing ball speed at the same time.

While it might not seem like there’s anything too revolutionary about this year’s TSR2 driver, it performs consistently for golfers of all ability levels.

Best Driver for High Handicappers – Srixon ZX5 Mk II Driver

Out of all the drivers I tested, the Srixon ZX5 Mk II was the most forgiving.  It was also one of the hottest.

This driver’s Rebound Frame has two flex zones, while most drivers only have one.  This feature elevates COR across the face for faster ball speeds.

The Ti51AF titanium alloy face is one of the hardest surfaces on earth and allows the ball to come off like a rocket.

The crown of the ZX5 Mk II consists of a series of ridges and latticework that are both ultra-lightweight and stable.  This allows mass to be placed elsewhere where it can be used to optimize launch and spin conditions.

On the bottom of the club, you’ll find an interchangeable 8-gram sole weight which can be customized to your specific swing.

On the whole, I found the Srixon ZX5 Mk II driver to be plenty forgiving without sacrificing anything in the distance department.

Best Feeling Driver – Mizuno ST-Z 230 Driver

Anybody that’s ever hit a Mizuno golf club knows that they make some of the best feeling clubs in the game.

New for 2024 is the Mizuno ST-Z 230 driver and it more than lives up to that reputation.

The main reason this driver feels so good is because it’s so stable.  This driver’s Coretech Chamber utilizes Sole Flex TPU material that reduces stress on the clubface and emits a muted, dampening sound that both feels and sounds incredibly solid.

Balanced composite weight distribution also limits torque and increases stability.

Deeper CG and shorter CG distance reduce spin while affording better players the workability they demand.

The clubface is made of 6-4 titanium and incorporates multi-thickness design to maximize shot performance across the entire face.

If you’re looking for a low-spin driver that feels more solid than anything else on the market, the Mizuno ST-Z 230 driver is the only way to go in 2024.

Final Thoughts on the Best Drivers for 2024

Equipment changes faster in golf than in any other sport, especially regarding drivers.  The major manufacturers are constantly upgrading their technology and releasing new clubs.

But that doesn’t mean finding the correct driver for your game must be daunting.  If you stay within your budget, go through a proper fitting, and narrow your choices, I’m confident you can turn your driver into a weapon instead of a liability.  You’ll start shooting lower scores and having much more fun when you do.

Hey everyone. Long story short, i'm not in much of a financial position these days where I can justify spending thousands on a fitting and new clubs. my idea was to get fit (affordably) at a place like the PGA superstore, then try to get the clubs used. is this a horrible idea? are those fittings typically done by people who don't know what they're doing? is it not worth doing the fitting process until you can afford to "do it right" at one of these high end fitting spots? i'm in the lower NY area if that helps. any insight or experience sharing would be great!

Atrayn

I did that in Arizona. Had an iron fitting and driver fitting at the Callaway Performance center.

I just wanted to see what shafts I needed to be playing in my irons and shaft head combo in the driver.

I believe it was 75 bucks for each fitting.

I then went on the bay to get the driver stock combo and I bought the iron shafts this way as well.

I have the ability to change out the iron shafts myself, so that saved me even more money.

I don't trust most big box stores in that regard, so you'll have to do a bit of research in your area to find someone/someplace that is good.

Hogan's Secret.......it's in plain sight but not for everyone... https://6sigmagolfrx.com/ 2017 Taylormade M2 9.5 (set at 10.5) w/ Diamana S+ Blueboard 60 S 2010 Tour Edge Exotics XCG3 3W w/Fujikura Motore S 15 deg 2014 Taylormade SLDR S HL 3W 17deg Fujikura Speeder 65 R, shortened 2017 Tour Edge Exotics 3H UST Mamiya 670 S 2009 Callaway Xforged 3i w/ KBS tour S 2012 Cobra Amp Forged 4-GW w/ Fujikura Pro i95 S 2013 Miura forged 54 & 58 wedges - w/ DG Tour issue S Ping Cadence Rustler Traditional putter

In my experience, big box stores will charge you for a fitting if you don't buy clubs through them. While I don't know what PGASS would charge I'm sure its less than a high end fitter.

That said, I did the exact same thing with Club Champion when they did their 50% off promo this past winter and it has worked out great. Now while they're pricier than a big box store I did prefer knowing I was paying for a fitting without any added pressure to purchase clubs from them. Since they charge for fittings they get guys like us all the time so they are much more relaxed about purchasing clubs. Plus, from what I've read, big box fitters are a gamble. You may get an awesome fitting, you may also get an awful one. At least with a higher end place you know you're getting a quality fitting with a mutual understanding that all you're paying for is that fitting.

I am a fitter at a big box store, every one at our stores knows their stuff (and no one works on commission), but some know more than others and have more experience doing fittings. The best fitters are usually there on weekends, that being said weekends are usually the busiest days. The best way to get a good fitter at a big box store is to ask around usually someone will have an opinion on a fitter at the store and that is the best way to find out who at the store is the best. You can also ask to see which fitters are certified for certain clubs, if they are certified then they are typically going to be better than average fitters. That being said I have seen places like club champion completely screw over customers that have no clue what they are doing. For example I had a customer come in with an epic driver with a 45 gram regular Oban shaft, when the customer clearly needed a stiff heavy shaft and would have been fine with a stock shaft. Often times places like club champion work off commission, and thus really try to upsell often not to the benefit of the customer.

Thanks

IMO there's two ways to do a fitting, the cheap but longer way or the expensive but quick (correct) way

1) Self fit via demo days, and/or trolling big chain stores - Go to various demo days and golf stores to troll the employees with no intent to buy. Club and shaft selection is poor to mediocre. Gives you an idea or what you like based purely on feel. Then go to ebay and buy stuff to try and maybe sell. Rinse and repeat. May take months, or even up to a year before it feels and plays perfect.

2) Club champion/golf course - Show up one day, pay maybe $350-400 bucks but try a massive variety of clubs and shafts, full bag fitting all at once. Real numbers based approach along with feels. Get fit for specifics like length, lie, loft, grip type, grip size. Ability to buy clubs on the spot, or order and pick up a week or two later. No questions or doubts about specs, and often times warranty on the service/clubs.

new2g0lf

Depends on the store and person you get to fit you. I prefer smaller stores for fittings over the big box stores.

Driver - Callaway Paradym Woods - Callaway Paradym 3W Hybrids - XXIO 10 3H, 4H, 5H Irons - Callaway Paradym 6-52* Wedge - PXG Forged 56**  Putter - Ping TYNE C Ball - Titleist AVX

Are you gonna get fitted at the Westbury PGASS?

I am also a fitter at a big box store and what Mjos just said is accurate. Ask around about the fitters in the PGATSS in your area before writing them off. And for the record, there are two ways to get fit with the store. There's the Tour Van experience, where you'll have a master fitter who will charge by the type of fitting (more $$$) or a "regular" fit that can be just as informative and FREE. The major difference is that the Tour Van fitter goes through pretty extensive training on the launch monitor and software and they use more in-depth software than the regular fitters. I haven't had a customer yet to tell me that they weren't satisfied with the service I provided them and I get recommended for fittings based on word of mouth.

"goes through pretty extensive training on the launch monitor and software and they use more in-depth software than the regular fitters."

^^This, plus an outdoor grass ball flight analysis after the launch monitor to verify....if at all possible

I've had the tour van fitting. I think with the right fitter, it's a pretty decent experience for indoors only type of situation. However, the guy who I was working with wouldn't listen to me - I told him I hated the shaft he was recommending me, but he just kept saying I "need a low spin" shaft because my numbers were too high. He also told me I needing something "forgiving" so put me in a Big Bertha Fusion cranked down to 8* loft, even though I was constantly cutting everything (did he realize he was opening the club face even more by doing this??). I was so pissed I almost felt like asking for my money back, simply because the guy wasn't listening to me, and my flight wasn't any better after leaving. I assume that if he gave me a 9* head and actually lofted UP to close the face a tad, and gave me something with a little more activity in the tip, I could have squared up easier, took a smoother swing, and got better numbers. But instead I had to try to over power that set up to feel like I could hit the ball straight, and ended up pulling the club face through...

Not saying the tour van experience isn't fine, but it really requires a good fitter and isn't as "idiot proof" like SAM putt lab or something. Especially because they did not use HMT or anything, so the only real data I was shown was my distance, spin, and dynamic loft.

Ultimately he told me to buy the BB fusion 9* head cranked down to 8* with a 65x Hzrdus black. Literally the worst recommendation ever for my swing at that time. I don't think my swing has changed a ton, but I managed to end up in the right set up later on which feels so much more natural.

Yes was considering it, any insight?

Went through a driver fitting at PGASS in NJ i.e. their tour van experience. I wouldn't recommend getting fit at a big box retailer. I had a very disappointing experience. You get what you pay for.

alright i'm kind of leaning towards avoiding this then. I'm just worried these upscale spots will try to force you into buying a set there, but i'll just have to be stern and let it be known early. thanks for the help everyone

The one in Paramus? That's where I went. See my story above.

I've had multiple fittings at Club Champion which is probably just under the level of "upscale" that a private club might offer. They did not try to sell me on anything after any of my fittings, even though they stock stuff like PXG, Miura, Scotty, Betti, etc.

The guys there go through a lot of training before they are certified fitters. I'm assuming it's more than what the guys at PGATSS and Golf Galaxy go through... In fact I know it is because the guy who fit me at Club Champ both times, used to work at GG and said CC is much better. He spent a month or so out in Chicago getting training.

Also at CC, I was put on track man and was given access to probably 3x as many shafts and heads. The tour van stuff is much more limited, so the chances of getting the exact fit you need diminish. I don't want to knock anybody here who may be a tour van fitter, I'm just pointing out my experiences doing both.

Oh that dreaded word that starts with Word not allowed...LOL! I'm not defending the PGATSS but please don't compare it to GG. They are not the same in terms of their approach on the business.

OP, ultimately it's your coin and you have to make the best decision for you. If you decide to avoid a store like the PGATSS based on a few opinions on this thread then do so knowing that a small percentage of guys on here shared their negative experiences. We should know that we (speaking for the US citizens) love to complain about the bad, and often exaggerate the not so bad into a really bad experience. Again, spend your money as you see fit, but my recommendation is to go into the PGATSS and at least see what they tell you. It's free, so what do you have to lose? Go first thing on a Saturday or Sunday morning so you don't have to wait and you catch the fitters bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Whatever you choose to do, please let us know of your experience.

Yup. I was recommended the m1 with hzurdus yellow. That combo was extremely low spinning for my swing. Seems the fitter there likes to put people into low spinning equipment .

Yes Word not allowedumptions are bad I know, but I've had first hand experience in all 3 stores now and the free stuff at various demo days... Golfsmith, etc.

FWIW, this is probably what will happen in a FREE demo at PGATSS:

Walk in... they ask you what you play now and your HC. If you say a high HC, they give you the most forgiving head out at that time and an R flex shaft. If you say a low HC, they give you an Epic SZ/M1 and whatever the lowest spinning shaft is in the little rack. Hit it a bunch... Maybe you toss in another shaft or two. Which set up went further? That's what they tell you to buy. They also have a very limited selection of X flex shafts, so if you're a high SS guy, I wouldn't attempt to base a purchase off the free stuff.

The free "fitting" is not even close to what a real fitting is. The tour van I would say is a pretty much full on fitting, but the selection isn't as much as Club Champ/local golf course, and...well the fitter has a very important role, too. I think the free stuff is great for when you just want to get an idea of the shape, sound and feel of a certain club, but nothing else. If you know what you're doing, you can get a little bit of insight like, hey this head is super fade biased for me... or wow this thing sounds nice, but you just can't optimize things in there.

I'm in Atlanta and can't speak for your experiences in NJ, but based on how things are done where I am, you just made another Word not allowedumption. We go into more detail with the free fittings, but understand, with a free fitting, an associate can't spend an hour or two with the customer because we have more customers that want free fittings. And the selection of heads and shafts are based on what the OEMs provide (minus what's stolen...yes, some golfers steal club heads and shafts). The Tour Van experience has pretty much everything that can be offered for the OEMs that are shared in that pod.

Again, I don't know what experience you had, but based on what I know about people's experiences, somewhere between your perception and what the associate offered is what really happened. :)

Well it's NJ, what can you expect....everybody here is in a hurry ;) we don't have that southern charm.

The free fittings at PGATSS or GG or anywhere... it's 15 mins or less. In fact, they literally set a timer at PGATSS here and when it's up, you get booted out. In my experience the van fitting has a pretty good selection of shafts, but they don't have the "exotic" stuff on hand like Oban, Graphite Design, etc. Not saying one needs those, but... if for just $50 more you can get a chance to try 15 other shafts that could be better fit, plus hit on trackman, I'd take that offer.

I'm glad you all do things better down south, because up here, free fittings are somewhat worthless, especially if you swing >105mph on your driver. Remind me next time I'm in ATL to come swing by, I'd love to pay less money and get more out of a demo.

When I did mine at Club Champion I directly told the guy at the beginning that I wasn't interested in PXG, Miura, etc. Because I knew that 1. I couldn't afford it and 2. I knew I was going to buy slightly used and retrofit which would be difficult to do with more exotic irons.

When I was done he did go over my spec sheet and cost of the clubs like any other salesman waiting to have me take out my credit card. However I just did the old "gotta talk it over with my wife first" which he understood. I knew once I got out the door that I wasn't coming back but I had my spec sheet in hand and just brought it to a local club maker who bent to spec. In the end I saved about $1300 from what CC was going to charge me.

Just remember, you're in control of the fitting. If you only want to try irons with dynamic golds then tell the fitter and that's what they'll do. If you choose not to lay that out then they'll try everything to find out what works best and not concern themselves with price.

really some awesome info here from everyone for me to think over. basically leaning towards maybe paying a bit more for a good fitting then retro fitting with used stuff. will still check out PGASS to ask around a bit. appreciate it!

If you can find a demo day that uses a Trackman, that's great. Nothing beats seeing the real ball flight backed up by Trackman data. Also, it can be free if you decide not to buy that day.

make sure to ask at some of your local courses. You would be surprised at who is willing to help you. Most of the guys know who can do fittings and I have had the pros at a couple different courses give me contact info on specific reps who will come to the course with trackman if I was looking at a certain brand.
