What is Merino Wool Fabric?

Packing for a trip can be such a chore and requires some tough decisions. You have eight of your best travel shirts, but only have room for four. You may not know when and where you’ll be able to do laundry on your journey—and that’s the fun & spontaneity of travel! Do you bring more clothes to last longer between washes or less and just say screw it? If you’re hitting up snowy mountains and balmy beaches in one trip, do you try to pack clothes for all seasons and end up with a huge, overweight bag?

Well, Merino wool can solve a lot of your packing problems. It is one of the best travel fabrics out there, straight up. Packing one Merino wool t shirt is like the equivalent of packing five cotton tees when it comes to freshness. It will keep you cool in the heat, warm in the cold, you don’t have to wash it every time you wear it and we almost guarantee it will become your best travel shirt—so you’ll only need a few. It’s going to cost you a pretty penny for the better brands, but the benefits of the material are worth it… if you take care of it correctly.

History of Merino Wool

Merino wool sheep were first bred in Spain and introduced to Australia in 1797. Fibers of the sheep became even finer when Australian farmers continued to perfect the quality with selective breeding. But wool’s big break in the fashion world didn’t come until the 1920’s when Coco Chanel produced a dress out of fine wool jersey. Today, designers and woolgrowers work together to connect consumers with the natural benefits of this awesome fabric.

Fun fact: The first wool sweaters date back to 230AD according to radiocarbon testing, making it one of the oldest materials still used today!

Benefits of Merino Wool: Some of the Best Travel Clothing Available

Rottnest Island, Perth, Australia

Soft and Comfortable

You’re thinking “wool, ugh that’s itchy.” Wrong! Merino wool is the finest wool fiber there is, making it way better than that sweater your grandma knitted you for your birthday. It’s also hypoallergenic so you likely won’t have any skin reactions at all. AND it’s naturally static resistant.

Natural Antimicrobial Properties

Antimicrobial is a fancy way of saying Merino wool prevents odor-causing bacteria from growing due to its awesome moisture control. Meaning: *drum roll…* you don’t have to wash it as often! But how does this work? Well, keep reading…

Quick Drying and Sweat-Wicking

Merino wool can absorb and retain up to 30% of its weight in moisture and still feel dry to the touch. Since the fabric wicks away moisture, those smelly bacteria don’t have the moist environment they need to thrive. Wear your Merino wool t shirt in the desert, on the slopes, or in the gym and you’ll be sure to remain dry and stink-free. Well, your clothes will anyway…you should still shower.

Warm in Cool Weather and Cool in Hot Weather

Those sheep know what’s good. Scientifically, Merino wool is awesome at temperature regulation because of its fiber construction. There’s an outer layer and an inner layer to the fabric. The outer is hydrophobic (water-repelling), and the inner is hydrophilic (water-absorbing). The inner layer absorbs your sweat, leaving you cool and dry, while the outer layer repels moisture, leaving you warm and toasty in colder climates.

Natural Elasticity

If taken care of properly (which we’ll cover in another section of this guide), your products won’t stretch out or lose their shape! Due to the natural crimp in the fiber, it can be stretched 30,000 times without being damaged, apparently. We haven’t tested this out ourselves, but maybe we can get an intern on it or something.

Natural Sun Protection

Merino wool has a natural UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) of 40+ to protect your skin from those killer cancer-causing rays we all love so much. A UPF of 40 means the product will block ~97% of UV rays from reaching your skin AND you can use less of that chemical-laden sunblock. Believe it or not, polyester has roughly the same UV protection, but a lightweight cotton T-shirt has a UPF 5, blocking around 20% of the rays.

Biodegradable

Nothing lasts forever, but when your clothing is ready to retire, sleep easy knowing that your merino wool products won’t be sitting in a landfill for too long. Because the fiber is made of keratin—which is the same protein our hair and skin is composed of—it will disintegrate back into the earth within 1-5 years. Synthetic fibers, like nylon, take 30-40 years to degrade. Yikes.

Merino Wool vs Regular Wool

The major difference here is that Merino wool is much softer than regular wool. Regular wool is what your mind recalls as itchy, and we’re here to change that stigma. Merino is totally different in the “touchy feely” category because its fibers are much finer than those of regular wool producing sheep. Both varieties share the epically awesome benefits of wicking, quick drying, elasticity and moisture control though.

Fun fact: most Merino sheep live in Australia and New Zealand.

Merino Wool vs Cotton

Besides the obvious that wool comes from an animal and cotton from a plant, there are several differences between these two popular fabric choices. Merino wool has great heat retention, where cotton is more breathable. Cotton might be a great option for the summer, but it will absorb all your sweat leaving you wet and smelly. Merino, on the other hand, will wick away your sweat creating your own wearable A/C system. Due to the antimicrobial properties of the fabric, you can wash it less often than cotton. Unless you’d like to spend your travels at the laundromat waiting for clothing to dry, we’ll call this a benefit.

Merino Wool vs Synthetic Fabric

There are a lot of great arguments over whether Merino wool or synthetic materials are better suited for base layers. One could argue that synthetic fabrics dry faster, which would definitely help if you’re an overly sweaty person. It’s also cheaper than wool and easier to care for, but we don’t think those minor benefits outweigh the massive pros of Merino wool. It is a natural fiber—AKA, when you’re done with it, it will decompose in a landfill pretty quickly. After you toss your synthetics, they’ll sit in that dump for 30-40 years before decomposing. Merino will also keep you warmer than synthetics, it’s usually softer to the touch, and it retains less odor allowing you to wear each piece of clothing more between washes. In the end, it really comes down to your personal preference though (we won’t judge).

Merino Wool Clothing For Travel

You’d be surprised at all of the common products made of Merino wool—we certainly were. Also, the brands you choose to go with do make a difference, as many companies use different grades & weaves of the fabric. The best Merino wool clothing can last for years while the lowest quality will only last a matter of months.

Video Guide Part 2: Merino Products

Merino Wool T-Shirts

Packing Merino wool t shirts can save space in your bag and save you a lot of laundry time. Plus, they’re so soft you’ll want to wear them all the time. Seriously, these are the best travel shirts. We recommend having at least two, but probably no more than four for longer-term travel. If you have two of these shirts, it will give you the option to leave one hanging out to dry at your hotel, hostel, or AirBnB while you’re out exploring and wearing the other one. It is also worth considering getting darker colored tees. We’ve found dark colors make for the best travel shirts because you can wash them less—they won’t pick up dirt or sweat stains as easily. When purchasing, take a look at the fabric thickness, usually indicated by “gsm” or “g/m²” (Grams Per Square Meter). Most companies will have a lighter weight version that’s optimal for warmer climates but if you want more durability or you’re in a colder climate, thicker is better. Most Merino wool t shirts are rated between 150gsm and 190gsm. Remember, Merino wool will regulate your body temperature in both hot and cold situations.

Outlier Ultrafine Merino T-Shirt Review

We’ve tested this tee with over 200 wears during a year and a half of use and still love it. The fit is very modern and it always looks sharp. Its magical properties keep you warm in the cold and cool in the heat, though the price tag is a bit hefty.

Woolly Ultralight V-Neck Review

The durability isn’t quite as high with Woolly products, but the price tag is easier to digest if you’re new to this fabric.

OLIVERS Convoy Tee

The material feels a tad thicker than our other two picks, however, it’s a solid shirt with some good durability.

Merino Wool Buff

What’s a buff? It’s headwear that you need to have! You can wear a buff many different ways, from a hat, a scarf, a headband, a face mask—basically, it can be whatever you need it to be. It’s lightweight and the Merino fibers provide a good warmth to weight ratio. Carrying one Merino wool buff is way more practical than packing a bulky knit scarf that will eventually smell and falls on the floor every time you hang it on the back of your dinner chair. The quick-drying properties come in especially handy with a buff, ensuring that your face and head stay dry and warm.

Using a Merino Wool Buff

BUFF USA Lightweight Merino Wool Buff

With one tube-shaped piece of Merino wool the possibilities are endless! This buff is great for travel packing because of its versatility, it’s quick drying properties, and it doesn’t retain odors. It also blocks 95% of UV rays. Bonus points for this brand because the buff is seamless which eliminates those irritating hems and seams that typically rub against your skin.

Merino Wool Underwear

When you see wool underwear, you probably automatically think, “No way in hell would I intentionally put something itchy down there.” We’re here to tell you that Merino wool underwear is not the least bit itchy. It’s actually super comfortable & soft. The wool is naturally antimicrobial and anti-stink, which means you can wear them multiple times before washing—that is if you can mentally handle the idea of re-wearing your underwear, and not just because you turned it inside out. The quick drying nature will keep you from feeling everyone’s least favorite word, moist. *Shudder* We recommend bringing 2-4 pairs with you: two if you’re feeling adventurous. Four is more the norm if you don’t want to do laundry often, plus since underwear is small it’s easy to pack more.

Woolx The Dailys Boxer Briefs

The Dailys Boxer Brief are super soft. Like really, really soft. They are form fitting and don’t bunch up, which is obviously awesome. The only problem is they get shredded up after 9 months. We got a solid 75 wears out of them, but we’re still searching for the perfect pair!

Merino Wool Socks

Everyone has been in a situation where your feet are super sweaty throughout the day and when you finally take your shoes off your socks are soaked and smelly. Not the case with Merino wool socks because they will regulate your foot temperature with Merino’s natural moisture control. But wait, there’s more! Like all other products in this category, they are antimicrobial and anti-stink so you can wear them a couple times between washes if needed. Merino wool socks can be durable AF, depending on the brand. It’s important to look for a blend of wool and lycra, spandex, or nylon. If there is too much wool, they won’t be durable or form fitting to your feet.

Darn Tough Merino Wool No-Show Socks

A little thicker than other socks, they’re still a good fit on the foot and inside your shoe. Darn Tough offers an amazing warranty as well—yes, a warranty on socks! If these socks aren’t the most comfortable, durable and best fitting socks you’ve owned you can return them with no questions. Though, we assure you they are extremely durable and definitely worth the purchase.

Merino Wool Button-Down Shirts

It’s good to look presentable every now and then while traveling, right? Whether you’re trying to look decent for the customs agent, headed to a nice dinner, or wanting to look sharp on the road while interviewing for a remote gig—a button down can give you a bit more of a polished look than a simple t-shirt. Whoever you’re trying to impress doesn’t need to know you’ve hardly ever washed it either.

Wool & Prince Button-Down Oxford Review

Wool & Prince offers a pretty great selection of Merino wool button-downs. They’re slightly itchy and take a bit to break in at first, but once everything is locked in, their button-downs are a great companion to have on the road.

Merino Wool Workout-Focused Clothing and Gear

Whether its a tank top, t-shirt or runners, this magical fabric is actually perfect for working out because it’s quick drying, sweat-wicking, anti-odor and it regulates your temperature. Plus, you can usually get away with wearing your Merino “gym clothes” as “regular clothes,” unlike a lot of the sporty-looking synthetic garments out there. If you’re in a pinch, you can air dry your gear before putting them back in your bag, which will help prevent the onset of smells even longer. While you can go a few wears between washes with this workout gear, like any other material, the more you sweat the faster the clothes will smell regardless of the antimicrobial properties.

Icebreaker Anatomica Tank

The thin fabric of the Icebreaker Merino Anatomica Tank is ideal for compression in your bag. Be sure to air dry it if you’re in a hurry after a workout to help get any smells out. It’s easy to wash in the sink and it’s quick drying. To add some durability, the tank is a blend of 83% Merino wool, 12% nylon and 5% lycra. The price tag is decently high, but worth it if you’re cramming everything into a small bag. One of the only cons of this tank is that the tag washes out after some time, making it hard to tell which way to put it on.

Merino Wool For Women

There are a decent amount of Merino wool products out there, but it seems the market is mostly geared towards menswear at the moment. Don’t get us wrong, there are definitely garments for women, but the pickings are a little slim. In our research, we’ve found that most Merino womenswear is designed as tight fitting workout clothing or frumpy cardigans. Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you should forgo your personal style, and we just haven’t found anything we love in that department yet. However, there are certainly no rules stopping women from buying the men’s products and reaping those benefits too. We’ll be sure to update this guide as we learn about new products.

UPDATE: Around the time of the initial publishing of this guide, Woolly has launched an entire women-focused line ! We haven’t had a chance to test or review any of their women’s merino wool clothing yet though.

Caring for wool may seem daunting, but we promise it's not.

How To Care For Merino Wool

Disclaimer: This guide will work for most Merino wool garments, but be sure to check with your individual brand’s care instructions first and foremost.

So now you know why this magical fabric is worth the extra bucks. But do you know how to make it last?

The first thing you should know is that because of its antimicrobial properties, you can actually wash Merino wool LESS than all your other clothes. Think about it, what’s the number one reason you do laundry? So your sh*t don’t stink right?

But how often is “not often?” You have to use your personal judgement and what you feel comfortable with based on how much you sweat and how much you enjoy doing laundry when you’re traveling the world. Generally, we suggest washing Merino wool t-shirts every 10-20 wears and, no judgement, underwear every 5-10 wears. Other people say we could go even longer! If that grosses you out, we won’t be offended, so feel free to wash more frequently, but know that the lifecycle of the product just might be cut short the more you submerge it in soap.

Video Guide Part 3: Caring for Merino Wool

How To Wash

Every brand and individual product will have its own care instructions, but we’ve done the research on some of the best practices to use based on your label. But who knows how to actually read those labels? Sometimes it looks like a picture book of how to cook ramen noodles without a stove.

BS Interpretation of Care Labels

In all seriousness, those symbols are important. Mess up the instructions and your shirt might be fit for your niece’s doll or your dog. There goes that $100 investment. Take our advice and try to learn the true meaning of some of the laundry symbols , which will help your wool products—and all your garments—live their best life.

On to the Washing

When you’re traveling, battling a language barrier at the laundromat while trying to explain how you want your washing done can be unnecessarily stressful and potentially costly if you’re not familiar with the native language.

Following these simple steps will usually do the trick for your handwashables and even those labeled machine wash.

Hand-washing Darn Tough Merino Wool Socks

  • Turn your garments inside out—this will help retain that “new look” for as long as possible.
  • Soak and swish in the sink for a minute with tepid water and a neutral soap. A neutral soap is anything with a pH balance of 7, which is the same pH as water. Fabric softeners and bleach are always a no no! The softeners coat the fibers and reduce its ability to naturally regulate temperature and moisture. See our soap suggestions below.
  • Let the garments soak for 15 minutes. Afterwords, you can run the item under some water for a quick rinse, but it’s not entirely necessary due to the crimping of the fabric fibers (the soap doesn’t penetrate all the way through).
  • Lay pieces flat to dry. Hanging will cause your clothes to stretch in weird areas from the weight of the water. You should also store the garments folded up to help maintain the shape.

All About the Suds

Carrying soap with you can take up valuable real estate in your travel backpack or luggage. There are a variety of products from shampoo bars to wool specific cleaners that you can use at home or on the go.

Multipurpose Soaps

These products are awesome because you can bring only one thing and use it for your hair, body, clothes and even the dishes if you’re in a pinch. When traveling, liquids and space are a premium, so we prefer this option when on the road.

Lush Shampoo Bar Review

A tiny bar of soap & shampoo that lasts much longer than typical liquid soaps, the LUSH Shampoo Bar proves to be a great TSA-approved option for travel and it’s natural ingredients make it safe to use on wool.

Dr. Bronner's Tea Tree Pure Castile Bar Soap

This soap is also plant-based, so it’s 100% laundry friendly and doubles as shampoo & soap on the road.

Specialized Soaps for Merino Wool

Dedicated products to prolonging the life of your wool, these might be better left at home if you’re sticking with one bag travel or trying to conserve weight. If you really love keeping your clothing at their freshest, there’s no reason you couldn’t take some in a 3oz GoToob or small liquid container.

Granger's Merino Wash

Granger’s Merino Wash is specifically made for Merino wool and has a nice, natural cedar-like scent.

Kookaburra Original Wash

Kookaburra Original Wash is specifically made for Merino Wool and works for hand washing and machine washing clothes.

Eucalan Natural Unscented Wash

Eucalan fine fabrics wash comes in eucalyptus, grapefruit, jasmine, lavender and natural scents.

Don’t have any soap with you? No problem. Any soap with a more neutral pH level will be great on the fabric. Dish soap, for instance, has a pH level around 7 (which is around the same as drinking water). Bleach is somewhere between 11–13 in pH level, so avoid at all costs!

Prefer a powdered detergent? These are fine to use, but it’s best to pre-dissolve the detergent prior to adding your clothes. This will help prevent concentrated specks of detergent from coming into contact with the wool, potentially causing holes and harm.

Removing Pilling from Merino Wool

If you’ve ever owned an item-of-clothing for more than five minutes (okay—a couple of months), then you probably know that pilling is basically inevitable. And, as magical as merino wool is, it can’t escape this fate either. Luckily, the process of removing pilling from merino is fairly straightforward. Probably the easiest way to do it is with an electric sweater shaver like the House of Wonderful Wonder Lint Sweater Shaver , which removes pilling with superhero-esque speed.

Wool Pilling Removed With Comb

But, if you’re traveling, you’re not going to want to lug around an electric shaver with you (unless you’re way into fabric shaving?), so we suggest picking up a sweater comb designed specifically to keep wool looking sharp. Ours is from the brand Comfy Clothiers, but any will do. All you have to do is lay your garment flat and then “comb” it, using small, precise movements. The metal teeth of the comb, which feel more sandpapery than anything, will pick up the pilling. After a few, focused minutes, your garment will look as good as new.

Protecting Merino Wool from Bugs and Pests

Packing Cubes and Cedar Chips

Place cedar chips or lavender oil in your bags. This will keep the critters away plus keep your entire pack or luggage smelling fresh.

  • When storing your clothes for long periods of time, seal them in a plastic bag or container to keep the bugs out
  • Think you’ve already been invaded? Place your garments in a plastic bag and in the freezer for 24-48 hours. This will kill any moths or larvae living in the fabric.

Merino Wool and Deodorant

In our testing, we’ve found that ordinary deodorants seem to perform just fine with Merino Wool. The main issue comes when you start using a deodorant with antiperspirant in it. Antiperspirant can really make a mess of Merino, and sort of goes against the main benefit of it—wearing many times between washes! Just avoid the antiperspirant and you should be good to go.

That's about all you need to know about this magical fabric. The next step is trying it yourself if you haven't yet!

Merino Wool: Making Your Travels So Much More Enjoyable

If we haven’t convinced you by now that Merino wool is one of the best travel fabrics out there, then there isn’t much left to say other than to go test it for yourself. While the price point is on the high side for these products, the benefits that the material has to offer seriously make the purchase a worthwhile investment.

From t-shirts and sweaters to underwear and socks, Merino wool is soft, naturally breathable and super comfortable. No itching or scratching with this wool! It’s one of the only fabrics that is naturally antimicrobial, resists odors, wicks moisture AND keeps you warm in the cold and cool in the heat.

With careful care of your Merino wool—and selecting the right brands—your products should survive hundreds of wears, retain their shape, and save you time on laundry no matter where you’re adventuring. New products are constantly being introduced to the market and we’ve only shared a few of our favorites with you that have stood the test of time in our bags. We will continue to explore and update you as products change and improve.

The bottom line of whether or not it’s worth the extra dough is completely up to you. But if you’re a serious minimalist traveler that dislikes frequent trips to the laundromat—Merino will help you travel lighter & faster.

The Best Underwear for Travel

Two pairs of blue underwear hang on a clothesline outside.

By Liz Thomas

Whether you’re traveling for business, pleasure, or outdoor adventures, you want undies that will work with you, not against you. That means quick-drying, moisture-wicking skivvies that you can wash quickly in a sink if need be.

Over the past six years, we’ve tested 37 pairs of men’s and women’s underwear while road-tripping, hostel-hopping, and backpacking in backcountry and urban environments.

Throughout these trips, the men’s ExOfficio Give-N-Go 2.0 Sport Mesh 6″ Boxer Brief and the Patagonia Women’s Active Hipster have both proved to be the best underwear for most travelers and active people in general.

Everything we recommend

merino wool travel underwear

ExOfficio Men’s Give-N-Go 2.0 Sport Mesh 6″ Boxer Brief

Best boxer brief.

Durable, quick-drying, and relatively inexpensive, this soft-fabric version of ExOfficio’s time-tested Give-N-Go undies will serve you well for years.

Buying Options

Tommy John Air Mesh Boxer Brief 8"

Softer, better-fitting, but expensive.

Well-tailored and comfortable, these extra-soft, adjustment-free boxer briefs are a treat at a premium price.

merino wool travel underwear

Patagonia Women's Active Hipster

Best panties.

These light, stylish, quick-drying hipsters stay in place, whether you’re walking, flying, or hanging upside down.

Budget pick

merino wool travel underwear

Uniqlo Men Airism Boxer Brief

Affordable boxer briefs.

Comfortable, compact, and fast-drying, these are a great value. But they don’t fit quite as nicely and aren’t as supportive in the crotch as the ExOfficio briefs.

merino wool travel underwear

Uniqlo Women Airism Ultra Seamless HipHugger

Affordable panties.

Made of similar fabric as the Airism Boxer Brief, with a no-ride cut, these undies are the least expensive of any we tested and among the best performing.

The ExOfficio Give-N-Go 2.0 Sport Mesh 6″ Boxer Brief is the best men’s underwear for travel because it combines fit, comfort, odor-proofing, and value better than anything else we’ve tested.

The Sport Mesh fabric excels at breathing and wicking and has better odor-resistance than other fabrics. It feels soft on the inside and smooth on the outside, so it slides against your pants instead of creating friction, reducing potential for chafing.

These briefs also feature a sculpted crotch area that gives wearers some much-appreciated support without feeling stifling. These dry quickly, pack compactly, and weigh less than almost all the other boxer briefs we tried—basically, these briefs are everything you’d want from travel underwear.

If you’re willing to pay more for better fit and fabric, the Tommy John Air Mesh Boxer Brief 8” feels like a fine-tailored garment with the price to match. Offering the best front pouch of any boxer brief we tested, these soft undies also stay in place better than the competition, for a truly wedgie-free, riding-free, rubbing-free experience. They’re a bit long in the legs—not ideal for pairing with short shorts—but other than that, we have no complaints if you can afford the hefty price. (Tommy John does make a version with shorter legs .)

The Patagonia Women’s Active Hipster doesn’t appear special upon first glance. Only after trying everything else and living through their failures to stay put did we remember what “special” really means in a pair of underwear—feeling as if you’re wearing nothing at all. The Patagonias have the best fit, comfort, and style out of all the panties we tested. The nylon material is fast-wicking and better than most synthetics for odor-proofing, making this pair well suited to athletic activities.

The Active Hipster is lightweight and packable, and it is the fastest-drying underwear we tested—perfect for minimalist travelers who go weeks at a time with just one or two pairs. But these same characteristics make these panties great for any traveler looking for something comfortable and packable, regardless of where you’re going or what you’re doing.

If you want great performance at an even more budget-friendly price, Uniqlo’s Airism line is a great choice. The fit isn’t as nice as you’d get with our other picks: The legs on the Boxer Brief are a bit too short, and the Seamless HipHugger had issues with sagging at times. Also, the odor resistance isn’t as effective or durable compared with pricier boxers and panties. But given the line’s more-than-reasonable price, you’re still getting great underwear that wicks, breathes, supports, and dries as well as the best travel underwear available.

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked, how we tested, our pick for boxer briefs: exofficio men’s give-n-go 2.0 sport mesh 6″ boxer brief, runner-up boxer briefs: tommy john air mesh boxer brief, our pick for panties: patagonia women’s active hipster, budget picks for boxer briefs and panties, the competition (men’s underwear), the competition (women’s underwear), what to look forward to.

Liz Thomas is a former Appalachian Trail speed-record holder who has hiked over 15,000 miles in performance underwear. As an ultralight backpacker, she’ll use the same two pair of undies for six months, washing and drying yesterday’s pair for tomorrow’s use. She’s taken travel undies hostel-hopping on five continents, too.

For feedback on the challenges undies may face internationally, we pinned down global nomad and author of The Hidden Europe Francis Tapon during the Sudanese portion of his five-year walk through all 54 African countries. To get a better grasp on design features, fabrics, and the changing men’s underwear market, we checked in with Michael Kleinmann, aka The Underwear Expert , editor-in-chief of The Underwear Blog and founder of the Underwear of the Month Club.

Anyone who wants to travel light or needs more room in their luggage for the fun stuff will appreciate the convenience of ditching cotton underpants. The material used in travel and performance underwear (the two categories overlap considerably) is thinner and takes up less space in your bag. It also reduces chafing and wicks away moisture—ensuring that discomfort from your undies doesn’t hold you back from your adventures—and dries about twice as quickly as the cotton used in typical underwear.

With the convenience of quick-drying, hand-washable underwear, you’ll no longer be at the mercy of the laundromat hours or expensive hotel laundry service. If you can commit to handwashing nightly before bed , you can travel indefinitely with just two pairs of travel undies.

The only major downside is that travel underwear tends to be more expensive per pair than typical cotton undies. For example, Uniqlo makes both cotton and synthetic boxer briefs, and the cotton version is about half as expensive. And though synthetic materials have a slick, silky feel that many people love in underwear, they tend to feel less luxurious than the softer modal-blend skivvies popularized by companies like MeUndies. But these softer materials dry too slowly—about as slowly as cotton in most cases—and aren’t as effective at wicking moisture.

Underwear laid out on top of each other.

The panties and boxer briefs that we decided to test met these standards for travel underwear:

  • Moisture wicking and breathable: Travelers will generate more sweat in their groin than the average office worker. Moisture-wicking and breathable fabrics maximize comfort, reduce odor, and minimize chances of infection—all important features when you may not get a chance to change your underwear for a while.
  • Quick drying: Tapon wrote us, “You want [underwear] that you can wash at night and that [will be] nearly dry in the morning.”
  • Odor-resistant: Odor is caused by moisture and bacteria. Certain materials like wool or treated synthetics are more difficult for bacteria colonies to develop on. We included only undies that advertised terms like “odor-control,” “odor-resistant,” “antimicrobial,” or “anti-odor.”
  • Stretch: When you’re in a remote location filming leaps over chasms and rooftops on your GoPro, the last thing you want is a rip in your drawers. “For active guys, we recommend underwear that contains a performance fabric, or at the very least some amount of stretch,” Kleinmann wrote us. Typically, 6 percent spandex, elastane, or Lycra is the minimum you want to look for in a pair of good travel undies.
  • Style: Travel underwear shouldn’t mean dorky underwear. If your travels bring you to a place where you’ll be showing off your skivvies, what you’re wearing shouldn’t scare away the company.
  • Cut: Whether a particular pair of underwear stays up and doesn’t dig into your body depends a lot on your shape and the cut of the underwear. We opted for undies with generous coverage, but not so much that they hinder mobility: Boxer briefs for men, hip-hugger/bikini-style panties for women. When traveling, modest underwear allows more freedom to change in the open if need be, or for unconventional activities like swimming. We also found that medium-coverage underwear stayed in place, and skimpier underwear gave wedgies over time. Similarly, ill-fitting underwear tended to bunch up from rubbing against our pants.
  • Variety of cuts: We focused on boxer briefs and hip-hugger/bikini styles in this guide, but different bodies have different needs, so it’s nice if a line has multiple styles available.

Hands washing a pair of blue travel underwear in a white bathroom sink.

We ran each pair run through a vigorous set of tests at home, including washing, drying, and sniff tests. Our ultimate goal was to determine how each pair ranked according to:

  • Fit and comfort: You should get wedgies from your siblings, not your clothing. A good-fitting pair of underwear is designed and cut to minimize readjustment. We looked for a pliable elastic waistband that stayed up without feeling restrictive. “If the waistband is digging [into you] or rolls over, chances are it’s a low quality pair or the wrong size or style for your body type,” warned Kleinmann. The fabric should also help your undies stay up with a snug fit and enough stretch to maintain free movement. Though underwear can be designed to be high- or low-rise, the top of the inseam should always go to the bottom of the crotch. When the rise is too short, you’ll feel restricted. Too long, and you’ll have to ride your pants up like Urkel or suffer a sag at the crotch. Many men’s boxer brief designs have a shaped front panel, also called a 3D panel or pouch. A good-fitting 3D front panel should fit closely, without restriction. Some companies, like Saxx put an additional pouch within the pouch—essentially underwear in your underwear—to add even more separation, but our testers preferred the lighter touch of a formed panel.
  • Fabric and seam scratchiness: Is the fabric soft or does it make you itch? Are there any annoying tags that can’t be removed (or if they are removable, is there still some rubbing where the tag was)? Do the seams rub against your skin or are they flush and out of the way?
  • Durability: Performance skivvies aren’t cheap. Look for fabric that will last. A solid waistband should not fold over or lose stretchiness over time. After handwashing, the fabric and seams should not show signs of pilling or loosening of threads. Experts differ on the reasonable life span of a pair of underwear, with estimates as low as six months to as high as four-plus years. What’s unacceptable is a pair that develops holes within a few months.
  • Long-term comfort: Whether you’re on a 23-hour plane ride sandwiched between two 10-hour bus rides or you’re backpacking in the tropics, you should be able to wear these for more than a day or two.
  • Lightweight and packable: Underwear won’t be the straw that breaks the weight limit on your check-in, but pairs that take up less space leave you more room for gear you really need.

We started by trying everything on. Anything that wasn’t comfortable to sit at a desk and work in failed the initial test and was cut from the list. We then wore the top performers for two days in a row, before conducting a sniff test. Testers also noted whether the pair felt grimy or otherwise gross. If so, we asked the tester to run the underwear through another two-day trial. To test durability, in addition to usual washing after wear, we washed each pair of underwear three times straight with a few pairs of jeans (to simulate a rough wash).

Because drying time is an essential component of travel underwear, after running all the underwear through the spin cycle, we line-dried it. We touched each pair every 20 minutes to determine whether it was dry and order of drying time.

We then moved onto real-world testing. The trips included backpacking 215 miles throughout the city of Portland, Oregon; six weeks backpacking the Canadian Rockies, walking from the lowest point in the Continental US to the highest; and road-tripping to the national parks of the West. And of course, wearing them on all the flights to our destinations.

Afterward, we checked for signs of wear. As we continued to test the finalists, we repeatedly checked for durability problems.

A pair of blue Exofficio give-n-go sport mesh boxer briefs hanging from an elastic drying line.

Whether we were sitting on a bus or walking hills, the ExOfficio Give-N-Go 2.0 Sport Mesh 6″ Boxer Brief  nicely balanced fit, comfort, durability, and cost. It’s virtually identical to its predecessor and our previous pick, the Give-N-Go Sport Mesh. The only difference is a slight change in material: from 92% nylon and 8% spandex to 90% nylon and 10% spandex.

Front panels are notoriously difficult to size correctly, but the Sport Mesh’s simple, stretchy pouch should accommodate a wide variety of body types, whereas the more complicated, multi-flap designs found on Saxx briefs can feel superfluous or stifling, depending on your personal situation. The Sport Mesh stretches as you move and retains shape well. It had the quickest-wicking performance of all the underwear we tested and dried fairly quickly, too.

ExOfficio made its name as a travel-underwear company with its long-lasting classic Give-N-Go model, which we also tested and has since been replaced by the 2.0 version (which we haven’t tried out yet). The Sport Mesh version has the features that made the Give-N-Go famous but pairs them with a better, softer, stretchier fabric. It also has a 3D front panel, a major improvement over the flat front panel on the original Give-N-Go. Our tester felt supported and contained, regardless of his movement.

Close up of the stitching and mesh on a blue pair of ExOfficio Give-N-Go Sport Mesh 6” Boxer Briefs.

What set the ExOfficio Give-N-Go Sport Mesh apart from the rest is that it transfers moisture away from the body better than the competitors. It is the ideal pair of undies for sweaty activities and hot locales. This pair also had better odor treatment than most of the others we tried, a feature appreciated by athletes and lazy launderers alike. “I have worn these boxers for years,” said our male tester, “and they have never let me down. They definitely combat odor.”

At 2.65 ounces (among the lightest we tested), the ExOfficio briefs fit compactly in luggage without a lot of bulk. They’re easier to fold than other underwear, with a more articulated front pouch.

Another advantage ExOfficio has over other brands we tested is that it offers a wider variety of cuts, colors, and sizes . Though we tested the green 6-inch boxer brief, if you want good performance in a specific color or leg length, it’s likely ExOfficio offers your combo. They are also among the most widely available performance underwear.

Our personal experience after years of wearing the original ExOfficio Give-N-Go shows that the odor-proofing antibacterial treatment eventually fades, and with it, the ability to wear them for multiple days in a row. But the fabric itself is nearly indestructible. The same can almost be said of the Sport Mesh version. Despite some early signs of pilling—especially in the perineum and the area between the legs—after six months of daily wear of a single pair (yeah, gross—we didn’t ask him to do this), our tester said this pair didn’t manage to develop any holes, despite some initial pilling. So if you can live with the old-sweatshirt look or don’t need to impress anyone with your undies, the Sport Mesh will serve you well for a long time.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The ExOfficios had a good fit, but it wasn’t quite as perfect as that of more-expensive underwear we tested. The waistband can roll over, although it doesn’t dig. During backpacking trips, the six-inch boxer brief caused our tester some slight chafing between the thighs (he attributed this to the size of his thighs, as this is a problem he had with all the underwear). This issue could be mitigated by opting for the longer, nine-inch model, which we did not test. Our tester also attributes chafing to the fact that he wore the same pair for a few days, allowing the accumulation of salt, dirt, and other substances that could contribute to or exacerbate rubbing.

Our tester also noted that although the ExOfficio Give-N-Go Sport Mesh wicks away sweat and dries quicker than the competition, the times when you do manage to get them soaked, they can stick to the skin and be harder to remove than our other picks.

The Give-N-Go Sport Mesh also didn’t top the charts in our drying-time test. They took a bit less than 2½ hours to fully dry on a line compared with two hours for the fastest-drying boxers, but it’s unlikely that the extra 20 to 30 minutes of drying time will make or break any situation.

Amazon reviewers and Snarky Nomad warn that sizes run large, so size down if you can. Those with athletic thighs or butt may find the waistband and thigh holes don’t correspond to your body dimensions. ExOfficio offers a 60-day return program for unused items (with tags still attached) bought their its website, so if you aren’t sure what size to get, you can afford to make a few wrong guesses and the company will cover the return shipping.

A blue pair of Tommy John Air Boxer Briefs hanging from an elastic drying line in a tree.

If you’re willing to pay a premium for something with a better fit and stretchier, softer fabric, the Tommy John Air Mesh Boxer Brief 8” is a great upgrade. Our tester said they “fit like a fine tailored piece of clothing, yet excelled during strenuous exercise.” The fabric moved with the body, requiring no adjustment throughout the day. The undies didn’t dig, sag, or ride up. Tommy John scored higher than any other pair we tested, getting near-perfect marks in all categories. But these briefs cost $6 more than our pick and more than twice the price of our budget pick.

What made the Tommy Johns stand out for our tester was that it had an easily accessible fly and the best front pouch of any boxer brief we tested. The fly allows exit from the top, not the side, which our tester found convenient. He said this design allowed for a great flow of pee while also reducing pressure on the urethra to reduce dribble.

Close up of the fabric on a turquoise pair of Tommy John Air Boxer Briefs.

Snarky Nomad also likes the Tommy John boxer brief, despite some pilling issues. In his review , he notes that “most irritation is caused by the contents of the front pouch coming into contact with the leg...if the contents of the front pouch are properly surrounded, they are also immobilized , and they can’t escape the confines of the front pouch at all, and will never come into contact with the leg.” Snarky Nomad and our tester both agree that a standout feature of the Tommy John is that the front pouch is not flat, instead shaped to safeguard its contents. It also lacks seams that can rub in an area that really should not be chafed.

Another benefit of the Tommy Johns is the wide range of sizes—from small to 4XL. However, color options are more limited compared with ExOfficio.

Tommy John offers among the best return policies we’ve seen on any product: “ The Best Pair You’ll Ever Wear ” allows first-time online purchasers to love the product or keep it with money back if reported within 30 days. The company also offers free return shipping labels within 30 days for unused products.

A blue pair of Patagonia Active Hipster Briefs hanging from an elastic drying line.

The Patagonia Women’s Active Hipster doesn’t sacrifice style for performance. It stays in place better than any other underwear we tested, dries quickly, and is more packable than anything else we tested. And it holds up great to strenuous activity and multiple washes—unlike the women’s version of ExOfficio Give-N-Go Sport Mesh , which sagged a bit on our tester and pilled noticeably after just a few wears.

The Patagonia Active Hipster has soft reinforced openings for the legs that prevent wedgies or riding up. We also enjoyed how the underwear is seamless, reducing areas where chafing or rubbing can occur.

Close up of the stitching on a blue pair of Patagonia Active Hipster Briefs.

Some Amazon and REI reviewers complain that the fabric is thinner than on earlier models, but we found that to not be a problem.

Most of the reviewers who have concerns about the current Active Hipster compare it with previous models, noting that the material isn’t as soft, the waistband isn’t as thick, it doesn’t have as much coverage, or isn’t as durable. Our testers found the material to be soft and were satisfied with the coverage. Compared with the other underwear we tested, which are among the finest in the genre, the current model of Patagonia Active Hipster is still the best.

We noticed no loose seams or pilling issues so far, but will continue to test for durability. Patagonia has among the best return and repair policies in the industry, but the company does charge for a return label.

Since we first tested the Active Hipster briefs, Patagonia has done away with the cutaway tag in its underwear. (Tag info is now printed onto the fabric itself.) Our only remaining complaints are the limited range of color/print options (four at the time of publication), and that the sizing is not particularly inclusive (it goes no larger than XL).

A grey airism boxer brief and blue airism hipster panty hanging from an elastic drying line in a tree.

If you want to spend as little as possible without sacrificing performance, the Uniqlo Airism line lets you replace an entire underwear drawer on a tight budget, as long as you can deal with its slightly odd fit and less-effective odor-control treatment.

The Uniqlo Airism’s fit provides a comfortable amount of coverage in both the Boxer Brief and Seamless HipHugger cuts. The coverage aspect isn’t about modesty: We found that medium-coverage underwear stayed in place, and skimpier underwear gave wedgies over time. Similarly, the merino pairs we tested tended to bunch up from rubbing against our pants. The Airism underwear was also quite durable and held up through several handwashing cycles with no signs of wear. Travel gear reviewer Snarky Nomad loved them .

A close up of the stitching on a grey pair of uniqlo men's airism briefs.

After trying all the options, our male tester noted that the Uniqlo Airism could have been a touch more supportive in the front pouch, but liked them overall, concluding: “I love these boxers and I think they offer the best of both worlds for affordability and comfort.” But the fit wasn’t ideal compared with the more-expensive options we tested. We think this is a result of the shortened inseam (leg length) combined with a taller rise (the distance from the crotch to the waistband), which can cause different fit issues on different body types. And although our tester did not experience this, other user reviewers report that this also leads to the boxers bunching up in the back.

If you find that the normal-fit boxer briefs don’t cut it, Snarky Nomad recommends getting the low-rise version and going a size up. The result is that it doesn’t ride too low. He also finds that the fit is better, especially in the front pouch.

A close up of the stitching on a blue pair of Uniqlo womens airism underwear.

The Seamless HipHugger cut also offers an excellent balance of comfort, affordability, and performance. However, we’re also happy that women’s Airism panties come in three cuts (HipHugger, Bikini, and High-Rise Briefs). Unfortunately, the two cuts that were at one point available in a more extended range of sizes (HipHugger and Bikini) no longer come in XXL.

As would be expected for the price, Uniqlo’s return policy is not particularly generous. It accepts garments that are “new, unused, unwashed, unaltered” with tags still attached and with original receipt. You can’t return in-store purchases via mail, but online purchases do come with a prepaid return label.

The ExOfficio Men’s Classic Give-N-Go Brief wasn’t as soft as the Sport Mesh version. It also didn’t fit as well and physically looks more like travel underwear than the Sport Mesh version.

The quite-affordable Boody Men’s Original Boxers ran small for their sizes and the men’s waistband rolled too easily. The bamboo-based fabric is a viscose rayon derivative, making it among the slowest to dry in drying-time tests. It is quite packable and the least expensive of all the undies we tested except for the Uniqlo.

The Stance Mariner was a tester favorite in terms of comfort, but we discovered after a poor showing during the drying-time test that Stance’s proprietary ButterBlend fabric is a rayon derivative—a fabric similar to cotton. Despite superior fit and comfort that would make them a good choice for everyday wear, the Stance did not wick or dry as effectively as other pairs we tested, which made them difficult to remove after sweaty workouts.

The ExOfficio Give-N-Go Sport Mesh Hi Cut Brief felt soft, dried quickly, and wicked well, but didn’t stay in place as well as our picks. However, we do appreciate that the Sport Mesh is available in more colors and styles than any other brand we tested. (The Hi Cut Brief has, however, been discontinued.)

The Boody Hipster Bikini and Boyleg Briefs ran small for their sizes. As mentioned in the men’s competition, these are made of a viscose rayon derivative, explaining why it was among the slowest to dry in tests. It is quite packable and the least expensive of all the undies we tested except for the Uniqlo.

We also tested and dismissed men’s and women’s briefs and underwear from Arc’teryx, Lululemon, Smartwool, and UnderArmour that have since been discontinued.

Our previous runner-up pick, the Smartwool Women’s Merino Sport Seamless Bikini, has been replaced by the Women’s Intraknit Bikini . The fit is similar, but the wool content has dropped from 72% to 39%, and the fiber blend is now 39% lyocell. We’ll need to test the new version thoroughly to see how it performs before being able to recommend it.

We also plan to test new and updated options for men and women from ExOfficio, Icebreaker, REI Co-op, Ridge Merino, Smartwool, Tommy John, and Under Armour, and keeping an eye out for products that offer inclusive sizing.

The Merino jersey turtleneck is streamlined and elevated, with plush fabric, a boxy fit, and rib trim. Their cropped mock neck sweater has a beautiful texture and looks amazing with high-waisted pants, whether dressed up or down. The merino jersey crew neck top is a winner, too.

Women's Merino Wool Underwear

Some people completely overlook underwear as the foundation of layering. Big mistake. So if you haven't already tried our Women's Merino Wool Underwear, you're well and truly missing out. Rest assured, they're every bit as soft, lightweight, warm and comfortable as the rest of our high-performance thermal layers.

They're all designed for all day, and even multi -day comfort with features like flatlock stitching to eliminate chafe and maximize comfort, and most of them are completely tag-free as well. What more could you ask for from your underwear?

And because they're all made from merino-rich fabrics, they're naturally temperature regulating, breathable and moisture wicking for year round comfort. Perfect for all of your travelling, running, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, climbing, cycling adventures, and whatever else it is you get up to Outside!

Let customers speak for us

Best and most comfortable merino clothing for the UK and Canada winter. A must buy is the base layers. Tops and leggings. Very happy with my purchase. Easy to care. Can't wait to use my gear for next trip to Finland 2025.

Great slogan as well. As used by owners of e72.au

All set for winter!

I wore this tee on the Camino and loved it. I hand washed it every second night and by morning it was always dry. I love the dazzling blue colour, the higher neckline was great for preventing sunburn and the sleeve length was perfect. I only had two tees with me for 42 days and I never tired of wearing this tee. It has kept its shape and has plenty more wear left in it.

Fantastic for hiking and everyday use. I bought two pairs of the bikini briefs for the Camino (40 days of walking) and they were fantastic. They dry really quickly. I would hand wash out a pair at night, roll them in a towel to get the excess moisture out, hang them up and by morning they were always dry. The hot pink colour made them easy to find in my pack too. Love them!

The boxers themselves are excellent. Great material and a great fit. What set ioMerino apart was the proactive customer service. I was very impressed

These are the best socks I have ever had. Cushioned and extremely comfortable, they fit in my shoes like much thinner synthetic socks, they can be worn for days before they need washing and they don’t walk down into my shoes.

This jumper is going to be my new best friend, even in Australian spring/autumn (or Melbourne summer!). In Norway at present - well and truly minus- and it performs wonderfully as a layer, or a quite-dressy top indoors. I'm really pleased with the quality, and it's NOT made in China!

Perfect for when riding my bike. Long sleeves are great for keeping the sun at bay. I find it breathes well and wicks very nicely. Highly recommended.

This is my 2nd pair. I don't see myself as a leggings bloke so wear shorts over them. Perfect for recovery, camping, bush walking and around the house. Woll on the skin works for me.

Excellent, comfotable, dry, long lasting merino socks. I love them for trail running and casual no show in shoes or 3/4 boots.

These Tights are the best - I have six pairs. They keep me warm and dry in the winter, but I also wear them all through summer ( see below 34 degrees and very happy) I mean, how can millions of sheep be wrong? As far as comfort and fit they are true to size and the most comfortable pants I own.

With Io Merino and cold weather it is a pleasure looking forward wearing their gaiters. So soft and has this silk like texture to their high quality Merino and lighness having around neck. Sits great and comfy and make one look forward to just enjoy wearing it. Colours!! Such a great selection and really fab to add colour to whatever wearing with and stylish too. The logo is comfortable too as can wear showing or not and still looks good on show too. I have them in two more colours and gifting one. The colours on this Merino superb with fabric and shades are different to anything I have seen before. Makes for great feel to adventuring outdoors or being extra snug indoors.

I have worn Merino for years with a big brand and trying Io Merino I can't look back, they are that good. Did not know what I was missing! The texture is smooth and beautiful, so comfortable and with durability to the fabric. The team at Io Merino are just fab if need to make contact and online ordering smooth and reliable process. Tip: I always wash Merino in wash bag to keep.as new and avoid snags in machine and handwashing is a great option too. I added two more colours as I live in Merino long sleeve tops in cooler weather bike riding or everyday wear as lightweight and warm and can layer easily without bulk to stay warm. So good having colours! and styles to choose from first time ever with Merino I have seen and to experience high end merino I never had before. Look forward to adding other styles for warmer weather..

I am quite fussy about t shits and am loving my new celcius t. It's comfy and stylish and goes with lot of different outfits. And merino!

Bought the Ultra Zip in Grey and I absolutely love it. This is my first IOMerino product and I’m really impressed by the quality. Feels soft, it’s super warm and fits really well. On the fit, I’m 5,11 (180cm) 75kg athletic build and while the medium fit was perfect across the shoulders, it would ride up if I put my hands up and was just a bit too tight to be comfortable for running and layering when climbing/mountaineering. I sized up to a large and it’s perfect.

Highly recommend this.

I love my new pants and I live that I could buy them locally I needed to exchange them for a larger size, my underestimating my size, snd just popped down to Adelaide to do so, though I have to say they were very prompt in sending them.

I just recently bought this top to replace a similar style synthetic one. The difference is night and day! I was getting hot, sweaty and itchy under the synthetics on long hikes. The merino fabric feels so much nicer on my skin and breathes so well, the comfort levels have improved 10 fold! Also love the zip for chest cooling and the thumb loops to protect the backs of my hands from the sun. Well done IO 👏🏼

15 Best Merino Wool Brands That Will Keep You Warm

With so many merino wool brands out there, it can be difficult to navigate the best quality, comfort, and deal. I’ve shortlisted the industry’s 15 best merino wool brands—so you can spend less time worrying about the quality of a product and more time worrying about which color you’ll rock best.

15 Best Merino Wool Brands That Will Keep You Warm

Merino wool has become very popular as a comfortable alternative to the usual scratchy and uncomfortable wool clothing. It’s also a naturally derived fabric, contributing to sustainability goals.

Another perk of merino wool fabric? It doesn’t wrinkle. The spring-like structure of merino wool fiber allows a great amount of elasticity, meaning your merino clothes will not crease or wrinkle (perfect for stuffing in a suitcase or backpack).

Plus, merino wool has antibacterial properties, which decreases the number of times you have to wash merino wool clothing (another sustainability win)!

As someone who has tried merino wool base layers, t-shirts, intimates, shoes, and more, I have a lot to say about these brands. These are the top 15 merino wool brands on the market today.

  • Best Overall Merino Wool Clothing Brand: Unbound Merino
  • Best Merino Wool Hiking Brand: Ibex
  • Best Merino Wool T-Shirts: Icebreaker

Unbound Merino : Best Overall Merino Wool Clothing Brand

Unbound Merino Wool

Unbound Merino is my top pick for comfortable, high-quality merino wool garments. Their clothing boasts superfine merino wool, which means their clothing is soft—not scratchy—and comfortable for daily wear.

Unbound Merino takes the #1 spot because of its continued performance, innovation, and garnered respect in the outdoor community. It excels in every category of quality, comfort, and durability.

Their garments are made of Woolmark certified Australian Merino, which is regarded as the softest and finest wool on the market today. You simply won’t find anything higher quality.

With the rise of consumerism, Unbound Merino aims to step away from fast fashion and create timeless, durable pieces that are produced with the highest care and quality. Their mission behind every one of their pieces is simplicity, versatility, and performance.

Their men’s and women’s Long Sleeve Merino Crew is one of the most versatile garments on the market. They’re temperature regulating and quick-drying, making them perfect for outdoor activities. They provide warmth, but prevent overheating. Best of all, you can dress them up for a day out, or wear them on your go-to weekend hike!

Another of my newer favorites from Unbound Merino is their Travel Pants for guys. These are a game-changer for traveling because the merino wool makes them ultralight and wrinkle-resistant. They have a more elevated look while maintaining the comfort of sweatpants—perfect for plane rides and road trips (they even have a secret pocket for your passport).

Ibex : Best Merino Wool Hiking Brand

Ibex Wool

Ibex is for the explorer and adventurer looking for good quality outdoor and hiking apparel. Ibex boasts an extensive range of outdoor pieces made of merino wool for all forms of activities, but they particularly excel in the hiking and trekking categories.

They have perfected the balance between packability, breathability, and warmth. Many of their best garments are incredibly lightweight for how durable they are, which is a game changer for hikers.

The brand was born out of the idea of modern migration—taking you on all your outdoor adventures regardless of the season, region, or activity. They’re really excelled in creating hiking garments that emphasize the need for multi-seasonal functionality.

Ibex takes great pride in the care of their merino sheep, ensuring ethical business practices for the health and wellbeing of their animals. They also take their sustainability practices very seriously and track the carbon footprint of their merino wool clothing.

One of the most unique products I’ve seen from Ibex is their Wool Aire Hoodie (also available in women’s sizes ). Most puffy jackets use a down fill, but Ibex has done something entirely new and created a stylish jacket with merino wool fill, which helps to regulate your body temperature more evenly and absorb sweat at the same time. Weighing in at around 10oz, this ultra lightweight midlayer jacket is perfect for those shoulder-season hikes and adventures.

Their Woolies Tech Long Sleeve Crew (also in women’s ) is an incredible base layer designed for high aerobic activities. It packs light, wicks moisture, and prevents itching and chafing. I would definitely recommend packing this staple along on your next backpacking trip!

Icebreaker : Best Merino Wool T-Shirts

Icebreaker Wool

Icebreaker was founded back in 1995 when synthetic materials were exploding in popularity. 24-year-old Jeremy Moon wanted to step away from mass production and instead focus on sustainable, high-quality clothing items. And with that, Icebreaker was born.

The Icebreaker t-shirt was the product that started it all. Jeremy, after not being able to find the perfect shirt for his adventures, created it. He had his friends try it, and everyone was amazed by the quality and performance.

Since that first product, Icebreaker’s innovation has only grown, and they have the widest merino wool t-shirt selection on the market today.

For the past 27 years, Icebreaker has stayed true to its core purpose and ethics. They believe that nature has the solution to creating long-lasting and sustainable clothing.

They have an unbeatable selection of t-shirts, divided into easily navigable categories. From lightest to heaviest, they have Featherweight , Ultralight , and Lightweight . They also have t-shirts that cater to different purposes and are divided into: Tech Lite , Cool Lite , and Artist T-shirts .

Icebreaker’s Tech Lite T-shirt is their flagship product, and it comes in a large variety of designs for both men and women . It provides a classic fit with breathability and odor-resistance. This is one of my personal favorite tees to bring on those longer trips where you’ll need durable, versatile pieces.

Their ZoneKnit line of merino wool products is another great option for merino wool t-shirts, especially for those high-activity days. These merino wool products, both tanks and tees, offer Icebreaker’s most breathable and lightweight merino wool shirts.

Smartwool : Best Merino Base Layers

Smartwool Merino

Smartwool ‘s core message has to do with feeling good. That is why apparel items like merino wool underwear , socks , and base layers take center stage as their main priorities.

Smartwool believes that these ‘foundational’ pieces are central to a person’s comfort and have an effect on both their confidence and performance. They have spent years perfecting their base layers that have become known as the best and warmest in the outdoor industry.

Their unique Base Layer Finder offers customers the convenience of easily finding the perfect garment. Set qualifications such as weight, warmth, style, SPF protection, and more to find the exact product you’ll need for your next adventure.

Their merino wool underwear is some of the best in the game. For guys, the Merino Sport Boxer Brief is a great pick, with a soft interior that prevents odor and chafing. For girls searching for merino underwear, the Merino Sport Seamless Bikini manages sweat and odor causing bacteria while providing mobility and comfort.

For those looking for versatility, their classic all-season merino base layers for both men and women are a great option. The smooth flatlock seams prevent chafing (something I’m sure almost all of us have unfortunately experienced on the trail), and their nylon core provides extra durability while still offering that merino-to-skin exterior.

Smartwool also has a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so if you’re unsatisfied within two years of your purchase, they will provide a replacement product! So, if you are looking for some new base layers that feel like a second skin, Smartwool is definitely a great option.

Darn Tough : Best Merino Wool Socks

Darn Tough Wool

We all have that go-to pair of socks in our drawer. No matter how many holes they might have or how stretched out they are, we still wear them anyway because of how comfortable they are.

Well, Darn Tough has created the perfect merino wool socks that you can wear day in and day out without getting those pesky holes or thinned out areas. These are the highest quality socks in the game.

Years of perfecting their merino wool socks led to their 100% guarantee. If their socks aren’t the longest lasting socks you’ve ever owned, you can return them, no receipt necessary, no questions asked, at any time. It’s difficult to find that anywhere else in the merino wool sock industry.

Their extensive range of socks caters to a wide demographic of people. Darn Tough has eight different categories of socks fit for different activities, ranging from skiing and snowboarding to running , and even work .

Their men’s and women’s Hiker Micro Crew Midweight Hiking Sock is a classic in the outdoor community. You’ve probably seen them while browsing the aisles at REI. They are so durable that they are the top choice for many PCT thru-hikers!

Merino wool is such a great fabric for socks because of its quick-drying and odor resistant qualities. If you’re looking to upgrade your workout socks, check out Darn Tough’s line of athletic socks , including their popular No Show Tab Lightweight Socks .

Allbirds : Best Merino Wool Shoes Brand

Allbirds Merino

It can be difficult to find durable, sustainably made shoes that you wouldn’t be a little embarrassed to walk out of the house wearing unless you’re hitting the trails.

Allbirds takes the #1 spot for merino wool shoes because they’re the most versatile in the industry. Wear them on a hike, a run, or a date, without sacrificing comfort, durability or style.

Allbirds combines the desire for sleek, comfortable shoes with the ever-growing need for sustainable manufacturing and optimal performance. They disclose their supply chain, names, and locations of their suppliers so you know exactly how and where your shoes were made.

Whether you’re in the market for everyday sneakers , running shoes , hiking shoes , or even sandals , Allbirds has a wide selection of merino wool shoes.

Their Wool Runners are one of their most popular shoes, perfect for casual adventures and everyday wear. Super soft and thermoregulating, these carbon neutral sneakers are also machine washable.

For those more intense hikes or runs, Allbirds also offers Trail Runners , which I think are also super sleek. They also provide great traction unlike a lot of other running shoes brands. Merino wool also provides that water-resistance that’s key for days ont the trail.

It is definitely amazing to see a company hold itself to such high standards when it comes to caring for the environment and playing its part in the world of fashion. If you’re looking for some high-quality shoes to pair with your wool socks, I highly recommend Allbirds!

Thermowave : Best Merino Brand For Outdoor Sports

Thermowave Merino

With 92 years of history and craftsmanship, Thermowave is a familiar name to nature lovers. With a mission of ensuring that their customers are well-prepared to experience and explore the outdoors, Thermowave produces top-quality garments for outdoor wear.

They have merino clothing that caters to every sort of outdoor activity possible, from winter sports , running , and even hunting and fishing . They truly rank superior over other brands in terms of their selection of garments for all kinds of outdoor recreation.

Every clothing piece you purchase will offer you the protection and comfort you need to enjoy your time in the great outdoors. If you’re someone like me who has multiple outdoor hobbies and sports throughout the year, then Thermowave is a great one-stop-shop for quality merino wool garments.

Thermowave’s Merino Arctic Long-Sleeve Shirt is an impressive base layer for winter sports. It blends 95% natural merino wool with 5% Elastane for maximum warmth and mobility on the mountain. This is one of the top recommended merino wool shirts for outdoor recreation!

Their Merino Gloves are another great staple product to add to your closet. These lightweight yet insulated gloves are perfect for your morning run, the trail, or other outdoor adventures. They are itch-free, breathable, and machine-washable, making them a top contender in comfort and easy care.

Duckworth : Best Merino Wool Beanies

Duckworth Merino

Duckworth prides itself as the world’s only single-origin merino wool brand. This means their wool is sourced from only one location that is managed and operated by the brand itself. With that amount of autonomy and control over their own materials and merino sheep, it is no wonder that they are able to produce such high-quality and durable merino wool clothes.

Duckworth’s ability to provide incredible warmth while avoiding a thick, bulky fit makes their beanies stand out. They are also superior to other brands in that their hats are truly one-size-fits-all-heads. Their merino wool provides a snug fit with plenty of stretch for a comfortable fit for all.

One of their noteworthy products is their merino wool beanies . They have 3 different styles: The Rigger , Watchman , and Homespun.

The Rigger is their most casual, stylish option, but it still offers a great deal of warmth. For a stretchier fit, try out their Watchman, which is made of elastic, ribbed natural fibers. And when it comes to versatility—being able to brace the more extreme cold weather and also look great while you’re grabbing a drink at the brewery—check out the Homespun hat.

There’s nothing worse than an itchy forehead after a long day of wearing a beanie, but Duckworth eliminates this problem by using only the finest merino wool fibers. Their hats are soft, breathable, and quick-drying, which is perfect for winter hikes.

Western Rise : Most Versatile Men's Merino Clothing Brand

Western Rise Merino

Western Rise offers the versatility to get you from work to play. The founders of Western Rise started the brand with the intent of creating fashion-forward merino wool clothes that were able to keep up with their active lifestyles. The entire brand is built around pieces that can serve multiple functions in your life.

Their clothing and apparel are classic and simple. They focus on three key elements when producing their clothing—premium performance, timeless designs, and sustainable manufacturing—making them extremely versatile.

Their Limitless Merino Button Down Shirt has a fitted, classic look without the stiffness of many other button downs. Moisture wicking and wrinkle resistant, this merino shirt is perfect for a day in the office, or for throwing in your bag for your weekend trip.

For a go-to closet staple, try out their StrongCore Merino Long Sleeve Tee. Offered in black and olive , this basic elevates the look of a classic long sleeve. Best for outdoor travel or everyday wear, this incredibly soft tee will have all your friends asking, “Whoa, where did you get this shirt?”

Outlier : Best Men's Merino Clothing Brand For City Living

Outlier Merino

Outlier ’s well-designed and innovative clothing items are meant to maximize comfort, practicality, and design. Based in NYC, this more luxury merino brand puts an emphasis on style and simplicity.

If there’s anything I know to be true about NYC, it’s that you can get just as sweaty on your walk to Trader Joe’s as you would on a hike up Bull Hill. Wearing merino in the city can often be just as beneficial as in the outdoors.

Outlier understood the need for durable, sweat-resistant clothing made for city dwellers. Their modern design comes out on top of other merino wool brands that tend to focus on a more casual, outdoorsy aesthetic.

The Nylistic Merino Highdarts are a sleek pant that offers what Outlier refers to as “rugged elegance.” The merino wool and nylon blend creates an elevated look with strong durability. Wear these to work, at the bar, or on a date.

One of my favorite city staples for men is button down short sleeve t-shirts. Outlier outperforms so many other men’s clothing brands because of their merino wool based fabric and sleek design. Their S140 Merino Shortsleeve button down is lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, and naturally soft.

For those that have difficulties pairing their clothes or can’t find pieces that match, Outlier has curated sets of pants and t-shirts perfect for easy everyday wear. You no longer have to worry about whether your top and pants go together.

Wool & Prince : Best Men's Merino Dress Shirts

best selling blues

Wool & Prince started off as a small kickstarter project in 2013. Since then, they have gained massive popularity for producing high-quality button downs and merino dress shirts.

They offer a large selection of button downs in a range of styles, colors, and patterns. The finer fibers make these some of the highest quality dress shirts on the market. They are ultrasoft and the elasticity of merino offers flexibility that other fabrics can’t compete with.

Proof that their dress shirts are the best in the game? Their founder wore one for 100 days straight to showcase the shirt’s durability, odor-resistance, and versatility.

Their lightest, most popular product is the 130 Button-Down Shirt . This flagship product is what gained Wool & Prince their popularity, and has been raved about in over 150 publications to date.

These resemble your classic, everyday work shirt, but offer superior breathability for year-round wear. And the best part? They are machine washable. No more going to the dry cleaners every week to wash your dress shirts!

If you’re looking for a more casual fit, 210 Button-Down Shirt is a great option. Wool & Prince created this shirt to offer more durability and versatility, and it is best for those who want to go straight from the office to their everyday activities.

Wool& : Best Women's Merino Brand For Everyday Wear

Wooland Merino

Wool& designs women’s clothing and has an extensive line of well-designed merino wool dresses. Wool& aims to be their customers’ clothing of choice when they open their wardrobes.

Unlike many outdoor clothing brands, Wool& caters to an incredibly wide range of body shapes and sizes. This inclusivity makes them stand out among other women’s brands that often lack inclusive sizing.

They have been creating garments specifically for women for nearly a decade and have perfected the balance between comfort and style that many other brands haven’t.

Wool&’s dresses come in a full range of colors and styles. You will most definitely find something that suits you. Their dresses have received worldwide recognition for being trendy yet high-quality and extremely comfortable to wear.

If you’re more of a t-shirt and jeans kind of gal, their tops are a stand-out in the merino wool clothing industry as well! They have a wide selection of tops, from sleeveless to long sleeve tees, and even cardigans!

The Everett Merino Wool Hoodie Tunic is my personal favorite style! It combines the feel of a dress with the functionality of a hoodie, which makes it perfect for chilly hikes, or even just lounging on the couch. I’ve seen this style coming into trend lately, and I definitely recommend Wool&’s take on this classic tunic style!

Woolly : Best Affordable Sustainable Merino Wool Brand

Woolly Merino

Woolly was created by three outdoor junkies with a mission to create a sustainable brand that stayed away from synthetic fibers and their negative impacts on the environment.

They noticed that there were few brands producing high-quality clothing made from sustainable material at a relatively affordable price. Since then, Wolly’s business has been exploding in popularity.

Wooly stands out for their persistent effort to keep their price marks lower than other sustainable merino wool brands. They make sustainability an attainable goal for those who can’t afford to spend an arm and a leg on one pair of shorts or a t-shirt.

Some of their top sellers include their Men’s Henley Long Sleeve , Women’s Pro-Knit Zip Hoodie , Women’s Cropped Tank , and Men’s Pro-Knit Joggers .

The Women’s Ultralight Cropped Tank is a perfect versatile staple for all of your activities, and can be dressed up or down! With the rise of athleisure, The Men’s Mid Weight Joggers is a perfect addition to any guy’s closet. It’s great of everyday activities, or can also be paired under a shell base layer for your adventures.

Why You Should Trust Us

Final verdict, 1. best overall: meriwool boxer briefs.

Why it’s great: Made from all-natural ultra-fine merino wool, these boxer briefs are silky smooth, breathable, and quick-drying. Thanks to their snug fit, they’ll keep everything in place, while the odor-resistant properties help keep your privates fresh.

They’re perfect for every day but also make an excellent choice for your outdoor escapades—when you’re not wearing them, they can be hung to dry with the subtle yet convenient loop featured on the back of the waistband.

How it feels: Tight without feeling restrictive, they give the perfect amount of support. You’ll notice the softness as soon as you slip them on.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: These are sold as an individual pair, and they’re not exactly cheap. But once you’ve tried them, I’m confident you’ll be ordering another.

Sizes Available: S-XXL | Colors Available: 3 | Material: 100% Merino Wool | Style : Boxer Briefs

2. Best Budget: Merino Protect Boxer Briefs

Why it’s great: Soft and itch-free, Merino Protect’s boxer briefs will soon become your daily go-to. They’re made from wool with a hint of stretch, making them durable, comfy, moisture-wicking, and odor-resistant. They promise not to chafe and the temperature control will ensure you remain happy in any weather.

How it feels: You’ll love these. Think of your favorite pair of underwear and then imagine if it was softer and lighter.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: If you’re looking for 100% merino wool, these come up a little short. They’ve been blended with nylon and spandex, which give them some extra stretch (and make them cheaper).

Sizes Available: S-XXL | Colors Available: 1 | Material: 84% Merino Wool, 12% Nylon, 4% Spandex | Style : Boxer Briefs

3. Best Luxury: Woolly Classic Boxer Shorts

Why it’s great: There’ll be no need for ball powder when you’re wearing these boxers. The full merino construction makes them odor-resistant, moisture-wicking, and beautifully soft—giving you unbeatable comfort (and dryness) all year round. The brand’s one-year promise means your purchase is worry-free; if you’re not happy, they’ll replace them, no questions asked.

How it feels: With flatlock seams, zero tags, and double tough high-wear zones, they’re about as comfortable as you can get.

Flaws not dealbreakers: The boxer-style fit makes them a little looser than briefs or pouch underwear . Great if you like your bits to have more space, but not ideal if you require ultimate support.

Sizes Available: S-XL | Colors Available: 6 | Material: 100% Merino Wool | Style : Boxers

4. Best on Amazon: METARINO Boxer Briefs

Why it’s great: A friend to your skin (more specifically your private parts), these boxer briefs are super lightweight, breathable, and odor-resistant. Excellent for every day and perfect for gym goers, they’ll keep your downstairs dry while keeping everything where it should be.

How it feels: I’m giving METARINO top marks for softness. The full merino wool construction means they’re hard to beat when it comes to comfort.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: As I mentioned, these are ultra-light, which can make them more prone to holes. Sizing also starts at medium, so check the size guide if you usually wear a small.

S izes Available: M-XXXL | Colors Available: 5 | Material: 100% Merino Wool | Style : Boxer Briefs

5. Best Everyday: Smartwool Everyday Exploration Boxer Briefs

Why it’s great: Designed to resist chafing, Smartwool’s temperature-regulating boxer briefs will keep you cool if you’re hot and bothered, but feel nice and warm once cold weather hits. You don’t have to worry about odor or wetness, as the merino construction transports moisture away from your skin before it has a chance to turn to sweat.

How it feels: You know what I’m going to say, right? There’s a bit of a recurring theme for the best merino wool underwear. It’s all soft. And this pair from Smartwool is no different.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: If, like me, you have skinny legs, they can start to feel a bit loose around the upper thigh area.

S izes Available: S-XXL | Colors Available: 2 | Material: 53% Merino Wool, 39% Polyester, 8% Hemp | Style : Boxer Briefs

6. Best Hiking: Merino.tech Boxer Briefs

Why it’s great: Keeping you cool in summer and warm during winter, these merino boxer briefs are the perfect choice for outdoor explorers. Whether you’re climbing mountains or strolling through forests, you’ll be comfortable thanks to the snug fit and gentle support. And just as you’d expect from the best wool underwear, they’ll wick away sweat and keep odors at bay.

How it feels: The super fine and soft handle ensures all-day comfort, while the tag-free design allows you to move freely without itchiness.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Some guys have complained about them coming up a tad small around the backside. So if you’re built like Kim K, be warned.

S izes Available: S-XXL | Colors Available: 10+ | Material: 100% Merino Wool | Style : Boxer Briefs

7. Best For The Gym: First Lite Short Boxer Briefs

Why it’s great: Designed for those that prefer a shorter, tighter fit when working up a sweat, First Lite’s boxer briefs come with a 4″ inseam and mesh vented panels to maximize ventilation. The Active Particle Technology exhausts moisture, while maintaining optimal core body temperature and fighting odors.

How it feels: Soft with ample stretch, I’m giving them 4.5 stars for comfort.

Flaws but not deal breakers: As I’ve already said, these do come up short (and they’re meant to be that way). If you prefer boxers that are longer in the leg, you’ll need to try another pair.

S izes Available: S-XXL | Colors Available: 3 | Material: 65% Merino Wool, 33% Nylon, 2% Spandex | Style : Boxer Briefs

8. Best Travel: Smartwool Sport 150 Brief

Why it’s great: Ideal for guys on their travels, these briefs are ultra lightweight, breathable, odor-resistant, and durable. They also regulate body temperature (keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter) and dry quickly, which comes in particularly handy if you need to wash them in a rush.

How it feels: Thinner and softer than regular wool, these merino briefs are soft on the skin with an added windproof panel for increased protection.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Tighty whities aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, so the fit might feel too tight if you prefer boxers.

S izes Available: M-XXL | Colors Available: 2 | Material: 56% Merino Wool, 44% Polyester | Style : Briefs

Buying Considerations for The Best Merino Wool Underwear

The color of the underwear you choose will largely depend on personal preference. However, for everyday wear and versatility, neutral colors like black, gray, and navy are popular choices as they tend to blend well with most clothing. They’re also less likely to show any stains or accidents (it happens to the best of us).

Ensure your underwear fits well and matches your preferred style, whether that’s boxer briefs, trunks, or another version. A comfortable and properly fitting pair will prevent chafing and discomfort during prolonged wear. Pay attention to features like waistbands and leg openings to ensure they are comfortable and stay in place.

Look for reputable brands known for their quality and craftsmanship. Quality merino wool underwear will last longer and maintain its performance properties over time. Read reviews and consider the brand’s reputation for customer satisfaction and durability when making your selection.

Buying underwear is quite a personal choice, but we all require a helping hand every now and again. To find the best merino wool underwear, I’ve delved deep into the world of boxers, briefs, and trunks, to source the finest undies around. And while I’d love to take all the credit, I did get a little help from hundreds of reviews left by guys who have been wearing them for years.

Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, athlete, or simply someone who appreciates finer quality clothes, investing in the best merino wool underwear may just be your smartest sartorial move yet.

For ultimate comfort, durability, and performance, MERIWOOL’s boxer briefs are a fine choice. Offering a natural solution to moisture management (no ball deodorant required), odor control, and temperature regulation, they’re the ideal option for guys seeking the best in functionality and comfort.

Merino wool underwear is a great choice for your top drawer. It’s loved for its softness, moisture-wicking properties, natural temperature regulation, odor-resistance, and overall comfort—making it particularly popular for outdoor activities and travel.

Yes, merino wool is an excellent option for boxer briefs. Its softness, moisture-wicking abilities, natural temperature regulation, and odor-resistance make it a comfortable and practical choice for underwear.

Our Honest Unbound Merino Review: Why Merino wool Is Perfect For Travel

Odor-resistant, quick-drying, and oh-so-cozy, Unbound Merino is a solid addition to your travel wardrobe.

In our almost 20 years of travel together, we’ve tested all sorts of travel gear, from travel jackets , to the best travel backpacks , to packing cubes , and even the Scrubba portable wash bag .

One thing we’ve never tested, however, is merino wool clothing. Sure, we’ve heard from our backpacking and outdoorsy friends that merino wool is one of the best fabrics out there.

Merino wool is moisture wicking, odor-resistant, and versatile. It keeps your skin dry if you’re sweating in cooler temperatures, and it will keep you cool and dry as well on a hike in the warm sun.

So, we decided it was about time to give merino wool a try. In this article, we review the Unbound Merino hoodie, t-shirt, and polo shirt.

See prices now.

What is special about Merino wool?

Merino wool is a natural fiber made from the fleece of Merino sheep from Australia and New Zealand. Merino wool is known for being softer and thinner than regular wool, making it easier to wear next to the skin, and meaning that you don’t get that itchy, scratchy feeling from merino wool that you might get from less expensive wool.

Because merino wool can be re-worn multiple times due it’s inherent nature, it means that you don’t need to pack as much. If you couple that with smart clothing choices, and using packing cubes to save even more space, you’ll end up with plenty of extra room in your carry-on.

Unlike cotton or poly blends that quickly absorb sweat and odor, Merino wool can be worn multiple times without needing to be washed, making it a fantastic choice for travel. You’ll save on trips to the laundromat, and be able to keep your suitcase lighter at the same time. It’s actually possible to go a few weeks wearing the same merino wool clothing, without washing (though you might get tired of the outfit well before then).

Unbound Merino Review

Unbound Merino was founded by three lifelong friends who became huge fans of merino wool on long road trips across America.

What is Unbound Merino?

Unbound Merino has a wide range of men’s merino wool clothing. The men’s line has t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, hoodies and sweaters, polos, and button down shirts, as well as socks, shorts, pants and underwear. The women’s line is coming soon.

Unbound Merino has free shipping in the USA and Canada on most orders, plus free exchanges and free returns within 90 days.

First impressions

Our Unbound Merino clothes came in a luxurious black package, with simple white lettering on the outside. Inside, the hoodie, t-shirt, and golf shirt were individually wrapped in tissue paper, with a colorful leaflet inside.

When I buy a premium brand like this, I expect luxe packaging, and Unbound Merino delivers here. I’d give them 10/10 for presentation.

Unbound Merino Hoodie Review

We love hoodies in our household. Each of the four of us in the family owns multiple hoodies – some for outside, some for snuggling up on the couch, and some for travel.

The Unbound Merino hoodie is made with superfine (21.5 micron) merino wool, making the fabric softer and more comfortable than a cotton hoodie.

The merino wool hoodie has a matte YKK zipper, with a black oxidized finish.

The Unbound merino hoodie’s fabric is 97% merino wool, with 3% elastane added for stretch and durability. The fabric weight is 250 GSM (grams per square millimeter), for a light feel, without the weight of a typical cotton hoodie. There are seamless pockets that keep the hoodie looking sleek, and not bulky.

Unbound Merino T-Shirts and Polo shirts

Are merino wool shirts worth it? Merino is long-lasting, versatile, and durable, but that does come with a higher price tag than a standard t-shirt.

Merino wool shirts are a great option if you’re looking for a durable, long-lasting shirt that you can wear for multiple days without washing. Merino is great for travelers like us who want to keep their suitcases light, and it’s especially good for hikers and backpackers, as well as outdoor lovers.

Is Unbound Merino good?

We’re really happy with our Unbound Merino experience. The merino clothing is comfortable, cozy, and nice looking.

Getting wrinkles out was a breeze. All I did was mist lightly with a spray bottle, and any wrinkles were gone within 10 minutes.

See prices here.

Is merino only good for cold weather?

It’s true that merino keeps you warm and cozy in cold weather and it’s especially great in cold weather, because it wicks sweat away from your body when you exert yourself, thus keeping moisture away from your skin when it’s cold.

In warmer weather, merino fibers wick away moisture as well, leaving you feeling cool, instead of damp and uncomfortable.

How to care for your merino wool clothes

Taking care of your merino wool clothes doesn’t take a lot of extra effort. Turn your merino clothes inside out, and wash with warm or cold water with regular detergent. Be sure to hang to dry, as merino can shrink in the dryer.

If you do wash a thick merino wool jacket while you’re traveling be aware that it can take a while to dry.

Table of Contents

Merino wool has been called “nature’s performance fabric.” A high-quality piece of merino wool clothing has the same—or even superior—benefits of technical apparel but is made from a natural fiber.

We consider merino wool one of the best fabrics for travel clothes because it works well across a range of temperatures, dries quickly, absorbs odors, and feels comfortable against the skin.

If you prefer natural fibers to synthetics, merino wool is a great choice for your travel wardrobe. Here at Tortuga, we’ve been merino wool fans for years. You’ll often find it on our backs and in our bags . When we polled our Instagram followers, 74% said that they wear merino wool when they travel.

You might be wondering what the merino hype is about and whether it’s worth its (often high) price point. We’ll start this article with more background on wool and why it’s great for travel. Then we’ll highlight the best merino wool brands and clothing items so that you can avoid the downsides of merino and make sure you’re getting good value for your money.

What is Merino Wool?

Where does merino wool come from.

Merino wool comes from Merino sheep. This breed of sheep originated in Spain in the twelfth century before being brought to Australia in 1797 . Today most merino wool comes from sheep in Australia and New Zealand.

Wool is a broad term for any fabric made from the natural fibers that form the fleece of animals. Common types of wool come from a variety of animals, not just sheep. For example, all of the following fabrics are considered wool:

  • Alpaca (from alpacas)
  • Angora (from rabbits)
  • Camel hair (from camels)
  • Cashmere (from goats)
  • Mohair (from goats)
  • Qiviut (from musk oxen)
  • Vicuña (from vicuñas)

Other types of wool—lambswool, melton, and shetland wool—are all made from sheep’s wool.

How is Merino Different from Other Wool?

Since merino wool comes from a specific breed of sheep, it’s different from other wool.

Like other types of wool, merino is moisture-wicking, breathable, and adaptable to different temperatures. Across all varieties, wool tends to be warm and water-resistant .

But not all wool is the same. Melton wool is perfect for a thick, heavy peacoat but would make for a terrible t-shirt.

Merino wool fibers make for great shirts because they are much finer than “regular” wool varieties. The finer fibers are made into yarn which is made into a roll of fabric. That final, merino wool fabric is both lighter and softer than other wool.

The diameter of a merino wool fiber is generally less than 22 microns in diameter. One micron is equal to one millionth of a meter . Merino fibers are 22 millionths of a meter across. Luxury, “ultra fine” merino can be as small as 17.5 microns. A human hair, for comparison, is 50-100 microns, up to 6x the diameter of finer merinos .

Merino Wool for Travel

Merino wool is a great travel fabric because it’s incredibly versatile. Every attribute that you need on the road happens to be a strength of merino wool.

  • Resists odors
  • Wicks moisture
  • Dries (relatively) quickly
  • Stays comfortable in any temperature
  • Feels (relatively) soft to the touch
  • Doesn’t wrinkle (much)
  • Is lightweight and easy to pack

Merino clothing is an investment, but you can easily get your money’s worth on a trip. Your merino wool clothes will work across a range of temperatures and will manage moisture well.

You can wear merino multiple times between washes without it stinking. People never believe merino’s anti-odor properties. They seem too good to be true.

Mac Bishop, the founder of Wool & Prince, wore the same merino wool button down for 100 days straight , without washing it, to prove how great merino’s anti-odor properties are. Now 200+ men and 13 women have completed the same 100 day challenge.

When you do need to wash your wool, just do a quick hand wash in the sink, and let it dry overnight.

When I’m packing for a trip , even trips of a week or more, I never bring more than three pairs of merino wool socks. I know that I’ll re-wear each pair at least two to three times and expect to wash them during the trip. You could travel indefinitely with one or two pairs of merino socks if you’re willing to go really minimal.

Finally, merino is lightweight and easy to pack. Despite its packability, I never pack my merino shirts because I’m always wearing one as my travel day outfit .

Merino wool is called “nature’s performance fabric” because it performs as well as most synthetic fabrics but is natural and sustainable.

Is Merino Wool Quick Dry?

Merino wool is naturally moisture-wicking and dries faster than cotton and other natural fabrics. However, merino won’t dry as quickly as synthetics fabrics like polyester.

When traveling, you’ll be able to wash your merino clothes at night and have a dry t-shirt or pair of socks by morning.

Merino wool’s water-resistance comes from its “scale” structure which gives it a performance advantage over the smoother fibers of cotton, silk, linen, and polyester. The difference in scale between the broad wool and fine wool in the image is the difference between a rough wool sweater and a soft merino wool t-shirt.

merino wool travel underwear

Is Merino Wool Warm?

Yes. Like other wools, merino is naturally temperature regulating.

Merino sheep can withstand temperatures ranging from -20 to +35 °C ( -4 to +95° F).

Clothes made from merino wear well across a wide range of temperatures. Merino can be used as a base layer or outer layer in the winter or a t-shirt in the summer. The fabric comes in a range of weights, expressed in grams, so you can choose a heavier version if you need it for cold weather.

Are Merino Wool Clothes a Good Base Layer?

Yes. You can make almost any piece of clothing out of merino, but the fabric’s strengths are most apparent in base layers like t-shirts, leggings, and socks.

One of wool’s superpowers—merino or otherwise—is that it acts as a cooling, sweat-wicking fabric in hot weather and a warm, heat-retaining fabric in cold weather. Merino is a versatile layer for most climates. Merino, of course, is thinner and less bulky than other wools, making it an excellent option as a base layer for  cold weather adventures .

You’ll commonly find merino in outdoor clothing, but these qualities also make it ideal for travel. Whether you want clothes that can go days without washing or simply the perfect tee to take with you on a  multi-climate trip,  merino wool is up for the challenge.

To maximize versatility, look for a “lightweight” top around 170-200 grams. This weight of fabric will be the most versatile for a variety of climates and will be more durable than a featherweight merino layer.

Merino Wool vs Cotton

Merino can’t compete with cotton on price. So why would you ever choose merino over cotton? Because merino dries faster, smells better (after wear), and is less wrinkly. Merino is an obvious winner over cotton for travel because it looks and smells great even after wearing it multiple times. Plus, it dries faster when you do wash it.

Merino Wool vs Polyester

Polyester, and other synthetics, were engineered to perform like the best natural fibers, including merino. Polyester dries faster, never wrinkles, and wicks moisture even better than merino. But merino is far superior in odor management. Synthetic fabrics hold on to odors even after a single wear. You can even buy special detergents and treatments for synthetics for this reason. You won’t smell bad in merino, but you might stink in synthetics.

Additionally, merino wool is a natural, sustainable material. Merino sheep grow a new coat of wool every year. Polyester and other synthetics are made from petroleum.

Disadvantages of Merino Wool

Now that we’ve covered what’s so great about merino, let’s quickly touch on the downsides of the fabric before discussing our favorite clothing items.

Merino wool isn’t cheap. One of our favorite brands, Outlier, sells a merino t-shirt for $120. Yes, one hundred and twenty dollars . Outlier is at the high end of prices, but even cheaper merino tees are $50 or more.

Making a garment with merino wool can use twice as much material compared to conventional wool. The fine fibers of merino require additional layering. We believe that the cost is justified for a natural, sustainable fabric like merino.

Merino wool is an investment. Don’t try to replace your entire closet all at once. Add one high-value piece at a time. We’ll cover the best quality and value brands below.

Two attributes justify the cost of “good” merino over cheap merino. The first is hand feel. Finer merino is more expensive but feels softer to the touch. The second is durability. We’ve tried cheap merino in the past. If you aren’t extremely delicate with it, your expensive clothes will be full of holes. Depending on the item, I usually prioritize durability over softness because the former is such a risk with the wrong merino.

Like most fabrics, merino comes in  different weights . Clothing made from a lighter weight merino will feel soft and more similar to a slightly coarse cotton jersey t-shirt than a sweater.

Pay for good quality wool or choose a cheaper synthetic. Cheap wool is the worst “value” you can find. You’ll pay more and get less than a cheaper poly blend shirt.

Merino wool blends—discussed below—can offset some of the durability issues.

To prolong the lifespan of your wool, take good care of it. We’ll cover how to wash merino wool clothing at the end of this article.

Is Merino Wool Itchy?

You might associate “wool” with “itchy” especially if you’ve ever owned a big, coarse wool sweater.

Merino wool is surprisingly soft for wool . Depending on the brand, your merino clothes will feel more like a cotton t-shirt than the wool sweater that you might be imagining. However, merino isn’t as smooth as a slick polyester fabric and can still feel a bit scratchier than cotton.

Natural fibers are a better option for most people. If you’re particularly sensitive to merino consider an outer layer for warmth rather than a “next to skin” base layer.

The finer the wool, the softer it will feel. However, finer wool is also less durable. The solution is a midweight wool or a blend.

Merino Wool Blends

Blending fibers can bring out the strengths of each while offsetting the respective weaknesses.

In socks, merino wool is often blended with lycra for elasticity and a snug fit. Clothing companies also blend merino with nylon or polyester for increased durability. A nylon blend is generally more durable but also more expensive than a polyester blend.

Blending in another material can improve merino’s performance. For example, by spinning merino around a core of nylon fibers, you’ll retain the benefits of having merino next to your skin but with improved durability from the nylon. Don’t assume the blended material is just “filler” to cut corners and reduce costs.

Some of the best brands use merino blends to maximize performance. We’ll cover those in the next section.

The Best Merino Wool Clothing

Not all merino is created equal. You’ll find a mix of 100% merino and merino-wool blends on the market at a wide range of prices and quality. I know because I’ve tried a lot of brands. I’ve bought merino socks that lasted me for years. But I’ve also bought shirts that looked like Swiss cheese after just a few wears.

Sometime in the last few years, the number of merino brands and clothing items has exploded. Many aren’t bringing anything new to the market. They’ve just figured out that you can change a lot of money for basics if they have “merino” in the name. Instead, we prefer to rely on the brands that have been around for years and proven themselves as well as the newer generation of brands bringing original ideas and high tech products to the market.

Merino Wool Socks

If you’re new to merino wool, start with socks. That’s how I got started.

Wool socks aren’t cheap, but you will get good value for your money. The best merino wool socks can last for years.

Socks are a good starting point because you’ll quickly see the benefits of merino: warmth and odor resistance. Seriously, smell your socks at the end of the day and see how long you can go before they smell and need washed. Give your socks a quick hand wash in the sink, let them dry overnight, and start the process over again the next day. I always pack socks with the assumption that I’ll rewear them two to three times and wash them (on longer trips).

Darn Tough merino wool socks

Darn Tough Socks

Darn Tough’s Made in the USA, merino blend socks are the best I’ve found in years of testing. You’ll find socks for men and women in a range of heights, underfoot cushioning, and fabric blends.

My preferred socks for fall and winter are the Hiker Micro Crew Midweight Hiking Socks for Men or Women ($24) made of a blend of wool, nylon, and spandex.

People Merino Wool Socks

People Socks

People Socks don’t have all the features or design options of fancier brands. But they perform about as well, last just as long, and are also made in the USA.

A pair of unisex People Socks will run you about $10, less than half what you’ll pay competitors.

Merino Wool Base Layers

You can make just about any clothing item out of merino wool. In addition to socks, wearing wool as a base layer is a great way to see the benefits especially when it comes to temperature regulation. You don’t need to buy something labeled specifically as a base layer. That’s often just a way to get you to spend more money on an ugly shirt.

Instead, buy basics that you can wear alone, in combination, or just as one of multiple layers in cold weather. You should feel just as happy wearing a merino tee on its own as under three layers.

We recommend packing to dress in layers . Wearing merino is a great way to pack less because it can be a warm fabric relative to its weight or thickness.

Merino Wool T-Shirts

After socks, tees should be your next base layer. While I’ve tested a lot of merino wool socks, I’ve tried even more t-shirts. Most have quickly snagged and become riddled with holes. The following are the brands that our team has found to stand up to repeat wears.

Men’s Merino Wool T-Shirts

Unbound Merino Wool Crew Neck T-Shirt

Unbound Merino T-Shirts

Unbound Merino has become my go-to for basics including short ($75) and long sleeve tees ($95). They’ve held up so far without any holes. As a bonus, they offer a nice stretch despite not including any spandex, which can wear out over time.

Western Rise StrongCore Merino Wool T-Shirt

Western Rise StrongCore Merino Tee

Western Rise has some of the best technical fabrics on the market including its StrongCore Merino Jersey which is a “core-spun nylon Merino fiber for increased strength.” The blend is made of 89% merino and 11% nylon for durability.

The StrongCore Merino Tee ($96) is the best showcase for this material.

Outlier Ultrafine Merino Cut One T-Shirt

Outlier Ultrafine Merino T-Shirt

Here’s the $120 t-shirt that we promised. While their prices are steep, Outlier delivers as a brand. Their Ultrafine Merino T-Shirt is made of 17.5 micron fibers for softness but weighs in at 195 gsm for greater durability and a better drape. Outlier’s merino tee is the softest that we’ve found.

Wool and Prince Crew Neck Tee

Wool & Prince 78/22 Crew Neck Tee

Wool & Prince sells a handful of tees in different weights and blends. We recommend their most popular: the 78/22 Crew Neck Tee , a 78% merino, 22% nylon blend that uses 17.5 micron fibers to strike the right balance of durability and softness.

Women’s Merino Wool T-Shirts

Wool and Stella Scoop Neck Tee

Wool& Stella Scoop Neck Tee

Wool& is the new-ish women ‘s brand from the same people behind the menswear brand Wool & Prince. While Wool& started with a dress, which we’ll get to below, they’ve also launched a basic t-shirt called the Stella Scoop Neck Tee ($78).

Woolly Women's Ultralight Tank Top

Woolly Ultralight Tank Top

Seattle-based Woolly makes high-quality merino clothes more accessible to those on a budget with their affordable basics. Everything is under $100 and some are even under $60.

The Women’s Ultralight Tank Top  ($40) is an affordable, easy-to-layer basic and a great addition to any warm weather travel wardrobe.

Merino Wool Leggings

Like a good t-shirt, leggings can be worn alone or as a base layer depending on the weather.

Minus33 Women's Merino Wool Leggings

Minus33 Fanconia Women ‘s Bottom

All of Minus33’s outdoor-ready lines are sturdy, well-made, and fit well. The  Midweight Franconia Women’s Bottom  ($75) are 100% merino wool with a fabric weight of 235 grams, which means they’ll keep you warm on your cold weather travels.

Smartwool Women's Bottoms Merino Wool

Smartwool Women ‘s 250 Bottom

For a heavier weight option, try the Smartwool Women’s Merino 250 Base Layer Bottom ($100).

Smartwool is one of the classic merino wool brands, so you can trust them. Their Merino 250 fabric “offers breathable warmth, moves sweat away from the body, and provides next-to-skin comfort in colder conditions.”

Merino Wool Underwear

Yes, people wear wool underwear. If you’re willing to try it, here are two boxer briefs for men to consider.

Wool and Prince Merino Wool Underwear Boxer Briefs

Wool & Prince Boxer Briefs

Developed with our friend and gear expert Eytan of Snark Nomad , Wool & Prince’s Boxer Briefs ($42) feature nylon for durability and spandex for stretch.

Most notably, they’re designed to stretch with your legs so that they never bunch up.

Western Rise StrongCore Merino Wool Boxer Briefs

Western Rise StrongCore Merino Boxer Briefs

Western Rise also uses their StrongCore fabric in Boxer Briefs ($58). These underwear are a blend of merino wool, nylon, and elastane.

Merino Wool Hoodies

Hoodies are a perfect in-flight layer. They’ll keep you warm and have useful pockets. A stylish hoodie will also double as your outer layer when you’re at your destination. Upgrading to a merino wool hoodie will give a you good reason to finally stop wearing your ratty old college hoodie.

Unbound Merino Compact Travel Hoodie

Unbound Merino Compact Travel Hoodie

The  Unbound Compact Travel Hoodie  ($165) packs down to the size of a t-shirt and can last for weeks without needing a wash.

A great travel hoodie isn’t about tons of pockets and a bunch of gimmicky features (like some crowdfunded hoodies). The ideal travel hoodie packs down small, keeps you warm, and can last for weeks on the road. Superfine merino is even wrinkle-resistant, so you’ll look great even when stepping off an eight-hour flight.

Performance is key for long-haul travelers who go on extended trips across multiple climates.

Merino Wool Shirts

Most merino wool brands focus on basics like socks and tees. But high-quality wool has been used for years in dress clothes too. The best men’s suits are made of wool, of course.

Now there’s a new generation of technical apparel companies making wool button down shirts and dresses for work or casual wear.

Wool and Prince 130 Button Down Shirt

Wool & Prince Button-Down Shirts

Wool & Prince’s Button-Down Shirts ($128-148) are my favorite merino dress shirts. They come in different weights, colors, and patterns depending on your style. The W&P button downs are perfect for work trips or weddings because they look good, smell great, and won’t wrinkle, even if you’re pulling one out of your backpack.

For summer, try their wool, linen blend shirts ($118-128).

Western Rise Limitless Merino Wool Button Down Shirt

Western Rise Limitless Merino Button-Down

For something a bit more technical, Western Rise’s Limitless Merino Button-Down ($129) blends 53% merino wool with 47% polyester for easy care and a four-way stretch.

I’ve found a bit of stretch to be handy in a dress shirt. When your shirt is tucked in, you’ll have the full range of motion without having to worry about your shirt pulling up and either blousing out or becoming untucked.

Merino Wool Dresses

Wool& Rowena Merino Wool Swing Dress

Wool& Rowena Swing Dress

Wool& is the sister brand to Wool & Prince which we already highlighted in the t-shirt section above. But Wool& started with a single product: the wear-it-anywhere Rowena Swing Dress ($138). You can dress it up or down and yes, it has pockets.

For button down shirts, visit the  women’s section of Wool & Prince .

How to Wash Merino Wool

Check the care instructions on your garment first. The brands and products above are a mix of 100% merino wool and merino wool blends that are up to half polyester or nylon.

Treat merino gently. Even high-quality merino can be more delicate than synthetics or cotton. When merino is blended with polyester or nylon, the result is more durable and, therefore, easier to care for. But, in either case, you spent a lot of money on the clothes. Don’t overwash them and, when you do wash them, do so gently.

Wash your merino wool in cold water or use the delicates setting on your machine.

Lay your clothes flat to dry. A short tumble dry, especially on low or no heat, can help work out some wrinkles. But don’t leave your clothes in for long. Better to have to iron them than to have to replace them. On the road, hanging a merino piece near a steaming shower quickly gets out any wrinkles.

Fortunately, this level of care lends itself well to traveling. Hand washing merino will help to preserve it.

Do not send your expensive merino wool clothes to the wash and fold. Be careful laundering it in an industrial washing machine if you can’t control the temperature and time on the machine.

When caring for merino, less is more.

5 Tips for Maintaining Merino Wool Clothing While Traveling

To help you make the most of your merino wool clothing while traveling, we’ve gathered five top tips from founders and owners in the travel industry. From protecting your wool items with sealed bags to opting for lightweight pieces and avoiding wringing, these experts share their best advice on how to buy, clean, and maintain merino wool clothing on the go.

Protect Wool Items with Sealed Bags

Invest in quality and air out garments, spot-clean and use wool-specific detergent, choose ethically sourced wool and follow care instructions.

  • Opt for Lightweight Pieces and Avoid Wringing

When I travel with Merino wool, I keep the items in a sealed plastic bag. This way, it protects them against humidity and potential bugs. Also, if my items get wet, I dry them completely before storing them away. This keeps the Merino wool from smelling and will make it last longer.

Finally, in many countries, you wash your clothes by going to the laundries. Here, I separate woolen items in a bag and explicitly tell the workers to wash the items separately and with delicate soap.

Josephine Remo Finderup , Founder, Josephine Remo’s Travel Site

Yes, I do travel with Merino wool clothing, and my top tip for buying, cleaning, and maintaining it while on the road is to invest in high-quality Merino wool pieces. I look for reputable brands known for their durability and versatility.

With cleaning, Merino wool has a natural resistance to odors, so I try to air out my garments rather than washing them after every wear. When I do need to wash them, I use a gentle detergent and hand-wash in cold water to maintain their softness and shape. I also roll my Merino wool items in a towel to remove excess water and then lay them flat to dry, avoiding stretching or misshaping.

For maintenance, I ensure I have a small repair kit on hand for any minor snags or loose threads. Merino wool clothing can be a fantastic asset for travelers, as it’s comfortable, stylish, and easy to care for, making it a smart choice for a variety of professional settings.

Luis Manzano , Founder, OKLanzarote

Yes, I frequently travel with merino-wool clothing. My top tip for buying, cleaning, and maintaining merino-wool clothing while traveling is to invest in high-quality pieces. Look for reputable brands known for their merino-wool products to ensure durability and performance.

For cleaning, merino wool naturally resists odors and stains, so you don’t need to wash it frequently. Instead, air it out and spot-clean as needed to maintain freshness. When washing is necessary, use a gentle detergent specifically designed for wool, and opt for hand-washing or a delicate cycle in cold water. Always follow care instructions on the garment’s label to prolong its lifespan and performance.

Tim White , Founder, milepro

Traveling with merino wool clothing is a smart choice because of its versatility, odor resistance, and moisture-wicking properties.

One top tip for buying, cleaning, and maintaining merino wool clothing while traveling is to invest in high-quality, ethically sourced merino wool products. Look for reputable brands that prioritize sustainability and ethical production practices. When cleaning, follow the care instructions provided by the manufacturer, which often include hand washing with a gentle wool detergent or using a washing machine on a delicate cycle with cold water. Avoid using fabric softeners or harsh detergents that can damage the fibers.

To dry, gently squeeze out excess water and lay the garment flat on a towel to air dry. Merino wool clothing can last a long time with proper care, making it a valuable addition to your travel wardrobe.

Jim Campbell , Owner, Honeymoons

Is Merino Wool Worth It?

Yes. I consider myself a minimalist and am always on the hunt for the best performing clothes, especially for my travel wardrobe.

I want to pack as little as possible in my backpack while still looking and feeling good. I want to re-wear clothes without looking like I’m re-wearing clothes. I want to carry less than everyone else while still dressing better than everyone else.

Merino wool clothing is one way to do that. Treat your merino as an investment. Save up. Buy the good stuff.

Introducing Merino Wool Clothing: The Best Travel Fabric

A s you guys all know I am obsessed with merino wool clothing. For the past 2 years I have challenged myself to wear some article of merino wool clothing every single day. In this quest, I have ended up becoming quite a fan and aficionado of this natural fiber. In the process of learning more about merino wool clothing, I have tested a ton of products and wanted to share my finds with you here. Also, since the holidays are approaching I thought this would be a great time to convince you of the beauty of wool and why you should also start investing in this amazing clothing.

Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, meaning at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

What is Merino Wool?

I know many of you may be thinking “yeah yeah I have tried wool and hated it!”.  Or maybe it’s along these lines – “I can’t handle those old fashioned itchy wool sweaters!” Or perhaps “I live in Southern California, what use do I have for wool?”

Merino wool is different. It is much finer and softer than the regular wool you may know from your childhood days. It is found on the Merino sheep in Australia and New Zealand. This breed  of sheep has the softest and finest fleece. With modern technology, merino wool makes for amazingly durable fabrics that outperform cotton and synthetics.

Benefits of Merino Wool Clothing

Odor resistant.

Merino wool is unique in that it is antimicrobial. It absorbs odor caused by bacteria —trapping the smell and keeping the bacterial from building up.

Did you know that bacteria is actually what makes your clothes smell?

This means you can wear merino wool clothing for longer without having to worry about smelling. This is one of the reasons it is perfect for travel and for the outdoors. We have worn wool for days on end while backpacking and honestly did not smell even after 5 days without a shower!

Temperature Regulating

Merino wool clothing is also temperature regulating . It keeps your body temperature cool when you are hot and warm when it is cold out.  The breathing qualities of the fabric make it perfect for all-year-round clothing.

Non-Allergenic & UV Protectant

Merino wool is perfect for people sensitive skin. There is research that shows that wearing merino wool T-shirts or sweaters can reduce adult and infant eczema symptoms compared to other fabrics. For kids who struggle with sensory issues, merino fabrics are so soft and gentle they are bound to be happy.

Merino clothes also have a natural UV barrier to keep you safe from damaging UV radiation from the sun.

Sustainable Material

Merino wool garments are much more environmentally friendly than other fabrics and are biodegradable .

Synthetic fabrics and cotton demand a great amount of manipulation and processing using water and other materials. Merino wool, however, is a natural fiber harvested from merino sheep twice a year providing renewability.

Furthermore, merino wool fibers will naturally decompose back to the earth when it is disposed.

Why is Merino Wool Clothing Perfect for Travel?

Merino wool clothing is perfect for travel because you don’t have to wash it often due to the antimicrobial properties, it doesn’t wrinkle too much and like I mentioned above it is temperature regulating which means you will be comfortable no matter the weather.

In addition to not needing to be washed often, merino wool clothing is quick drying. When you get stuck in that unexpected downpour, don’t worry, your clothes will dry quickly and you won’t feel it as much as the fabric is moisture wicking. Need to do a quick wash at night before you head off the next day? No worries, your merino wool clothing will usually dry overnight!

When you do need to wash your merino wool clothing, it can be washed in the washing machine. This makes it super easy to travel with.

Given all of this above, it just made sense for me to give it a go. And you know where that has taken me. Obsession level. I truly love my merino wool clothes and find it to be the perfect travel garment. I now pack much lighter, don’t have to worry about doing laundry often and I know all of my clothes work together. My go to merino wool travel clothing includes a dress, leggings, merino wool underwear, wool socks and wool long sleeve shirts.

The Best Merino Wool Brands

Merino wool clothing has taken off in the past few years with a large number of brands now entering the market. While there are constantly new brands emerging, the brands listed in this post are the ones I have tried personally and know the quality of their clothing. One of my favorite merino brands is Wool& . This brand only has women’s and a few kids options, but they are my go to first resource for all things made of merino fiber. For men, their counterpart Wool&Prince is the go to.

But other great brands to keep an eye out for include: Smartwool, Unbound Merino , Nui Organics , Iksplor (use my code NOBACKHOME for a discount!), Woolx and Branwyn.

Merino Wool Clothing for Her

My entry into the merino wool world began with a 100 day challenge issued by the company Wool& . Their challenge was – can you wear ONE dress for 100 days straight? If you can, and you document it, you will earn yourself a $100 gift credit to buy your next dress. I was intrigued by this and had to try. I ended up wearing my dress for 210 days straight before I got my reward dress and began switching things up. Now a year later I have 6 (eek!) dresses and almost a completely revamped wardrobe of merino clothes.

Merino Wool Dresses

Wool& is my preferred brand for all of my wool products. This is the brand that started it all and the one that I still go back to over and over. I have 6 of their dresses, wool leggings, pants, a cardigan and probably more. In general I am SO happy with this merino wool brand. They are always very quick to respond to inquiries, send your products with free shipping and provide free returns up to 30 days from purchase/delivery.

If you are just jumping into their clothes I would suggest sizing down at least on the things that are not form fitting as they are quite roomy. I typically wear a large in other clothes, but in Wool& I wear a medium.

Merino Wool Shirts

Smartwool also makes a great short sleeve merino wool shirt that I have and adore. I now have two of these. Again, this is something I wore all summer long over my wool dresses while backpacking to help protect my shoulders from the sun and my backpack straps. They are amazing and very versatile.

Merino Wool Leggings

One of the issues you can have with wool clothes is static. This can be exacerbated when you have cotton clothes under the wool. I found this out the hard way in a very dry southern California climate with a lot of static electricity. The best way to combat this is to wear ALL wool! And thus began my voyage into wool leggings.

Woolx is another great brand for all things wool. I have a pair of their leggings which I wore all summer and on our backpacking trips. They are a bit thicker than regular leggings, but not overly hot even during hot temperatures. I also have tried their undies and love them.

There are a ton of brands and I am slowly trying them out. Another brand on my list to check out are SnagTights . They have legging type tights and regular tights that get rave reviews.

Undergarments

I have tried a variety of wool underwear in this past year. Some were a total bust and others were pretty great. The ones I love the most are Branwyn . They are a super small company with a really great return policy. Basically if you buy multiple pairs of something and open 1 and don’t like it, you can return the rest and keep the one for free. That for me is excellent customer service. I did buy the bra from them and didn’t love it so they let me keep it. I ended up buying more underwear just because they are so awesome. These are a little thicker than the synthetic ones I used to wear, but they stay in place, don’t stretch out over the course of the day and are comfortable.

I also have Woolx undies which are thin and more like my regular cotton undies. These are only in bikini size which can be a little small for some.

Lastly, Smartwool has some nice options for underwear. They are thin and feel more like cotton, which makes them great and easy to travel with.

Merino Wool Socks

I know most people love Smartwool socks and while I also like them, the best merino wool socks in my opinion are  actually compression socks from Comrad . First I love that this company is based in LA where I live (which means I get my socks in the mail very quickly!) and I love the actual socks! I can wear the same pair for several days and still not get any smell or funkiness. I exclusively wore their no ankle wool socks (that they currently don’t have. WAH!) while hiking the John Muir Trail .  They help keep my feet from hurting and swelling and all the while they are wool. If you like ankle socks, these are the ones for you. They now also have higher leg compression wool socks as well, so now you have more than one option.

If you want regular socks, I do love the variety of Smartwool and have a few pairs that I wear in the winter. My son LOVES his Darn Tough wool socks .

Yes, I even have managed to move into the world of wool shoes. I know. I am obsessed. Taos are adorable clogs and amazing wool quality. Love these. There are also wool shoes made by Allbird that people rave about. I am sure there are more coming out, but those are the wo that I currently know about.

Kids Wool Clothing

And you can bet that I have also gotten my son into the wool wagon. He was a little resistant at first, but he now pulls out his wool clothes more than anything else in his closet and is on a quest to wear some piece of wool for the entire year. Granted wool clothing is a bit expensive for kids so I can understand why not everyone makes the jump into this arena. However I will say that having a few basics like thermals, a couple of t-shirts and a sweater will go a long way. We also LOVE wool socks which are a must when backpacking. If buying new is too pricey for you, check out Poshmark or online wool groups as people are always selling their outgrown wool.

Thermal Wear/Pajamas

Shirts for kids.

My son wanted to wear more merino wool fabric in his day to day life, so I found Nui Organics which has a line of tencel and superfine merino wool shirts that are glorious. These shirts are seriously so thin, light and soft. He loves them so much it’s about all you see him in these days. He has 3 short sleeves and 3 long sleeves. Sadly, they are discontinuing this line for a bit, so stock up while you can! Again I wish they made more of these and with pictures on them too to mix things up as these really are the best travel clothes.

Another brand that we have recently come into is Chasing Windmills . My son LOVES his long sleeve hoodie shirt and his sweatshirt from them.

Even though we live in SoCal and hardly get the opportunity to wear sweaters, he does have one beautiful sweater from Nui Organics that I am constantly wishing for cool weather so he can wear! Great quality, beautiful colors and again soft and light fabric perfect for kids who might have sensory issues.

My son loves his Smartwool and Darn Tough socks equally. But a new pair we recently tried by Nui Organics has turned into the daily favorite. Again these can be worn for several days without any smell.

For the Men

We haven’t tried any men’s wool clothing (yet!), but my friend Eric has recently been obsessed with his wool from UnboundMerino . It looks very similar to the quality of what I’ve tried and worn, so given his love of it I would recommend it. I actually have their travel hoodie and have worn it constantly for 2 years and LOVE it. It is perfect for all temperatures and honestly I don’t notice a difference with it being for men  not women!

Also Wool& has a men’s line at Wool& Prince . Again I haven’t tried it, but I will be ordering some for the holidays to check out.

So what do you think? Are you sold on why you should buy merino wool fabrics? Apart from reducing our carbon footprint and having a lower environmental impact, I really love the feel of my merino wool clothing and how easy it has been to use as a base for a capsule wardrobe.

Frequently asked questions

How do i clean my merino wool clothing.

When you decide it’s time for a wash, please turn your Unbound Merino clothing inside out to prevent pilling and follow the specific care instruction symbols on your clothing tag. You can also hand wash your clothing, which can be easier and quicker when traveling. When you’re done, squeeze out excess water but do not twist or wring.

It’s always best to lay your clothing flat on a towel or dry rack to air dry. Never tumble dry Merino wool or it will shrink. Should pilling occur, try washing your clothing with a pair of denim jeans (just make sure to close the zippers) and over time, the shorter wool fibers causing the pilling will pull away on their own.

What's the Unbound Merino guarantee?

We stand by all of the clothing we sell. If you are not satisfied with the performance of your Merino wool clothing within 90 days of delivery date, we will happily offer you a full refund. If your clothing does not stand up to the rigors of normal wear and tear, we will replace it.

You can also return clothing that you purchased directly from unboundmerino.com as long as it is unworn, unwashed, and in the original condition in which it was delivered in. We are happy to offer a full refund or exchange for any reason within 90 days from the ship date.

Where does your Merino wool come from?

All of our Merino wool is sourced from independent, mulesing-free farms that are Woolmark certified.

Is your Merino wool mulesing-free?

We share the same concerns you do and care deeply about the welfare of Merino wool sheep. That is why we only work with independent, mulesing-free farms that are Woolmark certified.

How do I exchange or return an item?

Our return and exchange policy is listed in the Unbound Merino Help Center, which you can access by clicking  this link .

Why doesn’t Unbound Merino clothing smell bad, even if I wear it for days or months at a time?

The extraordinary, natural performance of our Merino wool clothing is quite simple — we let Mother Nature do its thing. Since Merino wool has an innate ability to stay breathable, effectively manage moisture, and prevent odor-causing bacteria, the result is clothing that smells fresh no matter what you put it through.

Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

  • Merino wool is light, breathable and temperature-regulating, so you’re less likely to overheat and over perspire.
  • Thanks to its natural moisture-wicking abilities, when you do perspire, there is far less sweat collecting and producing odor.
  • Every fiber or Merino wool is naturally coated in lanolin, an organic antibacterial and safeguard against mildew, mold and odor.

The result is clothing that stays fresh and scent-free for days, weeks, and even months of wear when correctly cared for. Check out our Ultimate Guide to Merino Wool for an in-depth look at the benefits of this miracle fabric.

How can I ensure that my Unbound Merino clothing lasts a long time?

Take good care of your Unbound Merino clothing and it will last you a long time. Avoid using deodorant or antiperspirant that contains aluminum or alcohol. Over time, the build-up of aluminum or alcohol can cause staining.

When not being worn, hang your clothes in a well-ventilated and preferably open space — the more they air out, the longer they will stay fresh without needing a wash. When you decide it’s time for laundering, please wash your clothing inside out to prevent pilling and follow the specific care instruction symbols on your clothing tag.

Is Merino wool itchy?

This wool isn’t like your typical itchy sweater. It’s superfine, incredibly light and much softer than traditional wool, with some impressive performance properties that make for clothing that keeps you super comfortable at all times.

What is lanolin, and is it natural?

Every fiber of a Merino sheep’s coat has an oily, waxy coating called lanolin. It helps repel water, is a natural barrier against harsh climates, and protects the sheep’s skin from infections. It’s a natural safeguard against mildew, mold, and odor-causing bacteria. Traces of lanolin remain on the wool fiber from shearing to spinning, so our Merino wool clothing gets the same benefits. Check out our Ultimate Guide to Merino Wool for an in-depth look at lanolin and its benefits.

How do I prevent my Merino wool clothing from pilling?

Pilling is a normal and natural process that occurs when the shorter fibers in Merino wool work their way to the surface. To prevent this from happening, we recommend that you wash your clothing after the first 3-4 wears. Should pilling occur, try washing your clothing with a pair of denim jeans (just make sure to close the zippers). Over time, the shorter wool fibers causing the pilling will pull away on their own.

The Best Types of Wool for Performance Gear, According to Experts

Merino, alpaca, and yak wools are more sustainable and longer lasting than synthetics alone. We break down all three natural fibers, plus our favorite layers.

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. Why Trust Us?

While shopping for activewear, you’ll undoubtedly see plenty of marketing copy touting the benefits of both natural and synthetic materials. Both have benefits and drawbacks, and many “natural” garments incorporate synthetic fibers to optimize the best properties of both.

If you’re planning on activities that are rough on your gear—anything from squeezing between tight rock walls to wearing a backpack for long periods of time—a natural fabric blended with synthetic fibers is likely your best bet. It’s more sustainable than all-synthetics, it lasts longer, and it does a better job of staving off odors over time.

But determining which natural fiber is best for your activewear—and the percentage of blended synthetics—isn’t as straightforward as you might think. These days, in addition to industry standard merino wool, yak and alpaca wools are also popular choices for their performance properties and sustainability.

Here, we cover the blends that work best for performance wear and recommend a few base layers made of each fiber, and spoke with industry experts to understand what each of these materials can bring to your gear.

What’s the Difference Between Merino, Alpaca, and Yak Wool?

Merino wool: benefits and drawbacks, alpaca wool: benefits and drawbacks, yak wool: benefits and drawbacks, what’s the deal with nuyarn, why mix wool with synthetic fibers.

Synthetics have an edge when it comes to cost effectiveness and durability. These materials—particularly polyester and nylon—have impressive abrasion resistance and are treated for moisture wicking and odor resistance. Yet compared to natural fibers, synthetics are arguably stinkier after extended use. And, synthetics have proven to be harmful for the environment in both the treatment process and manufacturing.

“Synthetics use fossil fuels and have a lot of toxic contaminants, additives, dyes, and finishes,” says Alden Wicker, journalist and founder of EcoCult , an independent outlet dedicated to covering sustainability in the fashion industry. “They’re not biodegradable, and they come from factories that pollute the air, water, and surrounding communities.”

Wool, on the other hand, is more environmentally friendly because it comes from a renewable source. It’s biodegradable, and it doesn’t require the same level of chemical treatments—plus it’s naturally thermoregulating and odor resistant . But wool and other natural fibers are more delicate (and more expensive) than synthetics, so brands incorporate synthetic fibers to increase the activewear’s longevity.

Blends are also typically more comfortable to wear. Sheep’s wool is warm, for instance, but it can feel relatively scratchy and doesn’t have much stretch, so adding nylon or polyester to something like a beanie or a base layer makes the fabric softer against the skin.

Merino is the most common natural animal fiber in the performance wool market, but alpaca and (to a lesser extent) yak wools are increasing in popularity. All three types of wool perform similarly and are naturally porous. This means they absorb moisture, regulate body temperature, and maintain enough breathability to eliminate damp, bacteria-friendly environments, keeping the clothes (and us) fresher longer.

The price difference between merino, alpaca, and yak is related to sourcing, processing, and the percentage of natural fiber in the garments. Sheep farming is more accessible than alpaca and yak sourcing. As such, activewear made with merino spans the widest price point, with more affordable options. Alpaca is right in the middle, and yak—the most difficult to source and spin—is the least common, with the limited items and fewer brands utilizing the fiber.

There’s also Nuyarn, a relatively new processing method where wool fibers are drafted along a solid filament instead of the traditional process of twisting them. Nuyarn is used by dozens of brands across the outdoor gear and fashion industries because it offers loftier insulation with a higher abrasion resistance, bringing natural fibers closer to the abrasion-resistant properties of synthetics.

Thanks to its comfort, versatility, and abundance, merino is the most common natural animal fiber in performance wear.

“Merino has more versatility than other natural animal fibers,” says Emily Walzer, editor-at-large for Textile Insight Magazine . “It has incredible warmth and durability, and can be spun very thin for everything from a base layer to outerwear. If I was going camping, I’d want merino. It’s just sturdier [than other natural animal fibers].”

Like alpaca and yak, merino is thermoregulating, which means it reacts to changes in body temperature and the environment to maintain a comfortable microclimate, insulating in the cold and managing heat and moisture in warm conditions.

“Merino wool is a semi-hollow protein fiber that traps air, water, and odorous compounds inside, releasing them into the air over time,” Wicker says. “Unlike synthetics, which trap water and bacteria, wool allows for the passage of air and dries quickly, making it a healthy choice for socks, underwear, and outdoor activity base layers.”

This is why you’ll notice odor build-up on your synthetic gear after a while that doesn’t go away even when you wash it—that won’t happen with merino.

Merino has an edge over alpaca and yak in terms of durability, thanks to longer strands that don’t break as easily during the spinning process. This also gives it more versatility in yarn weight, resulting in a wider range of garments—think everything from merino-blend sun shirts to heavyweight layers—for a variety of activities and conditions. For us, this makes merino an obvious choice for everything from stink-resistance during hot runs to base layers for winter sports.

And if you have any comfort concerns about natural fibers, the days of itchy wool are behind us. “What people often associate as a wool allergy is actually an unpleasant sensation from thick, short- fibered wool against the skin,” says Sue Jesch, Smartwool’s director of design. “Merino fibers are so long and thin they actually blend into each other against your skin.”

Check the label to see exactly how much merino is in the garment you’re buying—you might be surprised to see it’s often less than 50 percent. Since natural fibers are less durable than synthetics, the wool fibers are often wrapped around long, unbroken synthetic strands for structure, which also helps bring the cost down and can lighten up breezier layers.

The ideal percentage of merino depends on your activity and budget. Less expensive options often have more synthetic, and gear that necessitates betterabrasion-resistance (a.k.a., anything used as an outer layer) will also utilize more synthetic. If you’re trying to get the most out of the natural properties of merino, look for clothes with at least 70 percent merino.

Wicker does note that merino can have similar environmental concerns as leather , including land use, pesticides, biodiversity loss, water consumption, and high emissions. While merino doesn’t use the same chemicals as synthetics, this is something to keep in mind if you’re trying to be as eco-conscious as possible when shopping.

Merino Wool Base Layers

Intraknit Thermal Merino Quarter-Zip

Smartwool Intraknit Thermal Merino Quarter-Zip

Material: 52% merino, 46% polyester, 2% elastane

Smartwool’s Intraknit line is knit in a round, which means it doesn’t have multiple sections to piece together—and the fit is 3D mapped (thinner around the armpits, for example) and articulated (extra room at the elbows, for instance). This makes for a seamless shirt as well as less scrap waste. This is a great mid-weight merino top for cool-weather activities like hiking or fishing.

Lana Merino Wool Hoodie

Arc'teryx Lana Merino Wool Hoodie

Material: 87% merino, 13% nylon

This high-percentage wool shirt feels light and airy thanks to the ultra-fine yarn and breezy fit. It has articulated sleeves and shoulders for a full range of motion, and the hood serves as both sun protection and light insulation. The shirt only weighs six ounces and packs down small, but packs a punch of warmth as a base layer.

Merino 185 Long-Sleeve

REI Co-Op Merino 185 Long-Sleeve

Material: 100% merino

This medium-weight crewneck exclusively uses merino wool, spun finely for an airy feel that still insulates while breathing and wicking sweat. This is a fantastic do-it-all base layer, with an easy-to-layer design and a scoop neck that doesn’t feel constricting when you pile on more layers.

While alpaca is less common than merino, it’s a great alternative wool source with environmentally sound farming and sourcing. Performance-wise, one of the biggest benefits alpaca has over merino is a higher warmth-to-weight ratio.

“The alpaca fibers themselves are completely hollow, trapping air with a higher insulating power,” Walzer says. So, while alpaca and merino are both good insulators, sheep’s wool contains pockets of air compared to alpaca’s hollow fibers, giving alpaca the edge in warmth without losing breathability.

Alpaca is also highly hydrophobic, which helps the clothes stay dryer for longer. While this is the case with all wicking fibers, alpaca does a particularly good job of releasing the vapor and allowing the garment to feel dry to the touch.

“Alpaca’s hydrophobic fibers still wick moisture, but the water vapor isn’t actually going into the fiber,” says Bonie Shupe, vice president of product at Paka Apparel. Instead, alpaca wicks moisture through the openings within the material, allowing it to evaporate instead of being held within the fibers. This makes it a good option for taking on extended treks (like backpacking or bike touring) when conditions are iffy and you need every layer to stay as dry as possible and dry fast when it does get wet.

Alpaca sourcing can be trickier than merino, though—there are fewer alpaca farms than sheep farms—and the fiber itself is less durable than synthetic or merino. Spinning alpaca wool into yarn takes a specific kind of technology, and it can break apart more easily than merino, making it less abrasion-resistant. Keep this in mind when deciding where to wear it. We recommend avoiding alpaca gear for hiking on overgrown trails, climbing, or any adventure where it could get snagged or rub against rough rocks.

Like other natural fibers, alpaca is often blended with other materials. “You often see synthetic blends with socks , especially in areas of high friction,” says Walzer. “It also helps bring the price of apparel down without sacrificing performance too much.”

The two alpaca apparel companies I spoke with—Appalachian Gear Company and Paka—stressed the importance of their wool sourcing, using traceable materials, and working closely with the alpaca farmers. Wicker has also spoken highly of the environmental conscientiousness of alpaca wool.

Alpaca Wool Base Layers

8020 Alpaca Long Sleeve

Appalachian Gear Company 8020 Alpaca Long Sleeve

Material: 80% alpaca, 20% Tencel

My first introduction to alpaca was through the Appalachian Gear Company All-Paca Hoodie , a popular mid-layer for thru-hikers. I wore it nearly every day of my 500-mile Colorado Trail hike, and it dried fast, wicked moisture, and was quite warm for the weight. This base layer is like a lightened version of the hoodie, blending alpaca with Tencel, a fiber made from wood pulp that helps keep this base lighter and more streamlined for layering. Because this top is made from all natural fibers, I recommend wearing it in places where you don’t have to worry about abrasion.

The Ultralight Crew

Paka Apparel The Ultralight Crew

Material: 65% alpaca, 35% nylon

This brushed-feeling base layer is one of the softest natural-fiber shirts I own. The recycled nylon helps with structure and durability, and the alpaca fibers are extremely fine. It also has a longer hemline, which I appreciate when I’m wearing a pack, though it’s not as close a fit as other base-layer type shirts.

160 Ultralight Alpaca Wool Long-Sleeve Base Layer Shirt

Arms of the Andes 160 Ultralight Alpaca Wool Long-Sleeve Base Layer Shirt

Material: 100% alpaca

This full alpaca half-zip is super stretchy, built for layering, and feels nice next to skin. Made from very thin yarn, this has excellent durability and shape-holding, and is a great all-around layer when you don’t want something bulky but need more insulation than a lightweight base. This layer isn’t as soft as finer knits, but it does soften up after a few washes.

Like merino and alpaca, yak wool is thermoregulating, adapting to your body’s temperature and providing similar benefits for humans as it does for the animals it comes from. Each spring, yaks shed their fine layer of underwool, and those fibers are used by apparel companies for a similar performance wool knit as alpaca or merino, albeit with a higher warmth-to-weight ratio, per noted independent tests.

The wool is incredibly warm, with a hollow, fine construction that allows more air to become trapped within the fibers—the same function that allows yaks to thrive in extreme conditions at altitudes up to 20,000 feet. For this reason, yak wool is a great option for insulating mid-layers that stay warm without bulk, but unless it’s blended with a high percentage of additional fibers, it doesn’t have the same variation in layer weight as merino, making it less versatile for warm-weather layers.

There are fewer options and material weights available for yak wool, but it’s a solid choice if you’re looking for a high warmth-to-weight ratio for cold-weather outings. It’s important to note that most yak wool performance apparel is a blend of fibers, combining yak with merino, bamboo, polyester, or hemp for cost effectiveness and durability. This allows a wider range of material weights, but the wool percentage is often lower.

While there are several lifestyle brands incorporating yak fibers, this type of wool is the least common, and even more unusual in the activewear space. In our research, Kora was the only prominent brand using it for performance apparel. This is partially due to the challenges of sourcing it from yaks on the Tibetan plateau, which drives the price up and makes it less appealing as an ingredient fiber compared to merino or alpaca.

“Yak wool is expensive and harder to spin,” says Walzer, adding that because it’s a short-staple fiber, it’s harder to process. “Long filament fiber is softer and more pliable, and short-staple is rougher and breaks apart more. You need expert spinners, which drives the cost up.”

Yak wool is a great option for the sustainably minded , though. The sourcing comes from collecting shed fibers, so the animals can live naturally in their habitat. It also encourages brands to employ locals to collect the fiber. This leaves less of a mark on the landscape compared to large-scale farming, but since yak wool is harder to source and spin, most garments are a blend of other natural fibers or synthetics.

Yak Wool Base Layers

Yushu Base Layer

Kora Yushu Base Layer

Material: 60% yak wool, 40% merino

This winter-ready, fully natural base layer was my second introduction to yak, after wearing a full yak-wool base layer that felt itchy. This updated top has all of the performance of the original layer, but is easier to wear and has been a terrific addition to my downhill ski setup. It fits well enough to not bunch under my other layers and offers plenty of warmth on cold runs. This top does have reinforced paneling on high-abrasion areas, which is helpful for clothes without any synthetic blends.

Women’s Yardang Yak Wool Hoodie

Kora Women’s Yardang Yak Wool Hoodie

This hooded base layer actually has more merino than yak wool, combining the fibers for a versatile top that can be worn on its own or as part of a system. It feels somewhat softer than the Yushu layer, and dries quickly if you manage to sweat it out. I also love the details like a helmet-ready hood and thumb loops, as well as the longer length that keeps it from riding up under a pack.

Nuyarn is a relatively new method of processing natural fibers, resulting in a loftier feel that can increase durability and moisture management.

Nuyarn was founded in 2000, but didn’t make its way into the mainstream outdoor apparel market until 2013 when The Merino Company purchased the brand and processing technology. While standard methods (ringspun and corespun) twist the wool into a rope-like structure, Nuyarn processes the wool along a solid filament that allows it to be utilized in a loftier state. Essentially, twisted fibers have more compression, which results in a less lofty, heavier fabric that can strain the fiber. Nuyarn uses a special spinning technology to produce an ultra-fine, twist-free yarn that they say increases moisture management, stretch, softness, and durability.

This process also emphasizes sustainability efforts during manufacturing, using about 30 percent less raw materials thanks to higher thermal retention of the loftier yarn. The company’s 2022 Martindale abrasion testing also showed higher durability, with 150 grams of Nuyarn breaking down at 123,333 rubs, compared to a standard ringspun wool breaking down at 14,000 rubs. This higher durability could conceivably help reduce material waste and garment replacement.

While Nuyarn is primarily used for merino, it can also be made with yak and alpaca wool, and it’s been adapted to work with the often-discarded strong wool (the coarsest wool fibers) that have historically been thrown away or only used for interior textiles like rugs and upholstery.

“This [discarded wool] is so durable it even outlasted some of the industry’s leading synthetic textiles in abrasion tests,” says Andy Wynne, CEO of The Merino Company, the company that owns Nuyarn. Wynne tells me the company is currently looking to integrate this coarse wool into high-abrasion areas of performance garments and packs.

Nuyarn Base Layers

Woolies Pro Tech Crew

Ibex Woolies Pro Tech Crew

Material : 85% merino, 15% nylon

This super stretchy top is my go-to for everything from wearing under overalls to going for a run. I love the standard fit which doesn’t feel too tight or too baggy, and the flatlock seams don’t rub under a pack or feel twisted under layers. I’ve found it to be quite abrasion resistant, and it has thumb holes. What more could you ask for?

Flatiron 185 Base Layer Crew Top

Artilect Flatiron 185 Base Layer Crew Top

Material: 91% merino, 9% nylon

This packable top packs a punch in warmth, with double-cuffed sleeves that don’t get pulled up under other layers, mesh venting under the arms, and a long hemline that layers well as part of a winter system. The Nuyarn processing keeps it light but warm, though I have found it to fit a little tighter than other base layers. If you’re between sizes, consider sizing up.

Tern Ultralight Merino Hoodie

Outdoor Vitals Tern Ultralight Merino Hoodie

Material: 58% merino, 42% nylon

Made with very fine merino fiber, this lightweight hoodie works as both a sun hoodie and a cool-weather layer. It’s super simple—you won’t find zippers, thumb holes, or pockets, but it’s sleek and streamlined with a lofty feeling from the Nuyarn. Be aware this can get caught and pulled pretty easily, so I try to wear it in places where it’s not in danger of getting snagged on rough surfaces.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

Nothing detracts from a good travel outfit quite like a tangle of wrinkles running across your shirt, but when you’re shoving clothing into packing cubes and aiming to squeeze as much into your suitcase as possible, it can be difficult to sidestep that reality while traveling. Well, unless you know what materials to look for, that is.

This spring, we’re making sure that you can do away with wrinkles permanently while you’re on the go — and no, we don’t mean by turning to the questionable iron tucked into your hotel room closet. After scouring the internet for sleek styles made of materials that resist wrinkles like silk, polyester, lyocell, and wool, we’ve rounded up the 10 best wrinkle-free tops to pack while traveling, from brands like Madewell , Everlane , Vuori , and more. And with prices capping at $96, you can bid wrinkles adieu at any budget.

J.Ver Women’s Wrinkle-Free Dress Shirt

Sometimes, a simple button-down is all you need to feel sophisticated and well-dressed in a pinch, so this $25 top from Amazon is an excellent selection for work trips and even a nice dinner while remaining wrinkle-free. The blend of cotton, polyester, and spandex is the key for maintaining its uniform shape even after folding this shirt and tucking it away into your suitcase, and with 35 colors and patterns to choose from, don’t be surprised if you end up circling back to grab another shade later this season.

Shewin Women’s Casual Floral Print Blouse

Nothing says spring quite like a bold floral top, so it makes sense that this flowing bohemian-style blouse quickly became a best-seller at Amazon . The relaxed, comfortable fit is endlessly flattering, while loose sleeves won’t ever feel restrictive during sightseeing days and beyond. Plus, this shirt is so lightweight that it will hardly take up any space in your suitcase, and with a wrinkle-free finish, you don’t have to worry about looking disheveled or messy — even when you are getting dressed in a rush.

Everlane The Mini Jacquard Stripe Top

Earthy tones are forever a classic regardless of the season, so if it’s a flattering tee that you’re on the hunt for, this brown striped top from Everlane will fit the bill. Featuring a boxy, slightly oversized silhouette, this relaxed-fitting top will look great paired with anything from a maxi skirt to a simple pair of slouchy jeans. Versatile and wrinkle-free? You won’t find many shirts better than that.

Madewell Long-Sleeve Popover Top

Anyone who thinks that a simple white blouse is boring clearly hasn’t laid their eyes on this ethereal top from Madewell that’s easily dressed up or down for any occasion that might arise during your travels. Currently double discounted to just $56 the code FORYOU , this top is practically begging to be added to your closet for spring, so you never have to worry about packing a portable steamer or using the hotel iron again.

And if you’re feeling in the mood to splurge on a lookalike style, the Aday Slim Something Borrowed Shirt is designed with a similar feel, but it features a stretchy and breathable material that was specifically created not to wrinkle.

Babaton Utility Shirt

Multi-purpose layers are a cornerstone of spring travel style, and this casual utility shirt from Aritzia is a top pick for this role. Not only can this shirt be buttoned up and tucked into a pair of trousers, but it can also be worn loose and unbuttoned over a plain white tee for a day of sightseeing in fluctuating temperatures. The army green shade is perfect for transitioning from winter to spring weather, but if your wardrobe is calling for something different, don’t worry — there are 20 other colors to choose from.

The Group by Babaton Destination Longsleeve

It’s always a good idea to invest in elevated basics, and this well-made long sleeved top from Aritzia is the perfect base layer for any outfit you put together this spring. The slim-fitting crew neck cut captures a classic style that’s universally flattering, while lyocell fabric resists wrinkles for a refined look every time you slip it on. Best of all, it’s ultra-soft and cozy, so if you’re looking to level-up your travel day style, this top is a great place to start.

Abercrombie The A&F Mara Denim Vest

Abercrombie & Fitch

t’s no secret that denim doesn’t wrinkle, so if you’re hoping to add fun flair to your spring outfit lineup, why not start with this sleek and fun twist on the menswear trend ? This button-down top is currently available in three shades (traditional denim, black, and cream), but all are versatile and endlessly cool when paired with a matching bottom, flowy skirt, or trousers. In short, the outfit possibilities are endless with this wrinkle-proof vest.

Abercrombie Merino Wool-Blend Slash Top

Wool is a reliable material to look out for if you’re aiming to reduce your collection of wrinkly clothing, and there’s no better top to shop for brisk spring days than this effortless merino wool-blend piece from Abercrombie that’s currently on sale for just $49. The delicate, lace-like pattern adorning the entirety of the sweater adds a touch of femininity to any outfit, while the fuzzy texture will feel gentle against the skin — even after a full day of wearing it. Not to mention that the neutral shade will pair easily with even your boldest bottoms, making this a more stylish neutral piece than a simple plain tee.

Madewell Silk Muscle Tee

Short-sleeve weather is right around the corner, and this silk muscle tee from Madewell is a great pick for showing off your arms without needing to wear anything too tight while you’re on the go. Right now, the three available shades are on sale for just $75, and the relaxed fit of this top is practically made for long travel days when you want to look put-together without sacrificing comfort. The fact that it doesn’t wrinkle is just icing on the cake.

Vuori Long Sleeve Halo Crew

We can’t blame you if your go-to travel outfit is an oversized sweatshirt and leggings, but may we suggest a slight elevation to this look in the form of this stylish crew neck from Vuori? The ultra-stretchy and breathable material is ideal regardless of the temperature that you’re traveling in, while a cropped fit is slightly more flattering than your typical sweatshirt. It’s safe to say that this top brings all the comfort of a hoodie but with the style of a typical shirt, landing in the perfect spot between loungewear and your new go-to sightseeing outfit.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

long gray escalator in moscow russia

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

group of people walking in moscow red square at night with christmas lights everywhere

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Travel to Moscow with Kids

Cruise on the Moskvar River when you travel to Moscow with kids

By Helen Fletcher – HolidaysFromHels

Looking for a bit of an adventure, we decided to travel to Moscow with our kids, in the middle of the winter . And, it turned out to be the snowiest winter in the past 20 years. It took some preparation, but seeing the onion domed cathedrals dolloped with snow was magical. Traveling to Moscow with kids, and doing so in winter was challenging but rewarding. And, going at this time of year provided us the bonus opportunity of trying out snow tubing and ice skating in the once infamous Gorky Park . All the details from our family adventure are below, so let’s get going! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave us a comment below .

Table of Contents

The Main Questions We Had About Our Travel to Moscow With Kids

In the winter time, would it be too cold to travel to moscow with kids.

The answer is no, not if you bring the proper gear . February is the best time to travel to Moscow with kids, as the temperatures are no longer at their coldest. It can get to -40 degrees in January, but in February it is not yet warm enough for the snowy streets to turn to rivers of slush, as they do in March.

Is is safe to travel to Moscow with kids?

We felt no sense of danger, even at night. The soldiers and medal wearing military men wandering around the Kremlin simply add an element of interest rather than fear.

7 Ways to Plan Ahead for Some Travel to Moscow with Kids

1. start the visa application asap.

Make the visa application no more than 90 days before travel, but plan to use the full 90 days . Part of the process requires you to travel to the application office for digital fingerprinting for everyone 12 or over .

Fill in the visa application form .  For UK citizens apply here . Be warned, it is a pretty intrusive and time consuming process to do a whole family application. You will need your last 3 passports and details of all countries you have visited in the last 10 years. You will also need to disclose your monthly salary, and you will also need to note your social media accounts.

I’m not going to lie, the visa application process is no walk in the park. You can pay companies to do the legwork for you, but I was up for saving money, and finding the information needed to complete the form is the hardest part anyway. No one else can do that for you.

NOTE: There are also lots of travel agency sites masquerading as official application centers, so go directly through the Embassy or Consulate nearest you to avoid extra costs.

2. Pay for Flexibility

Book flexible flights – in case the visa does not come through. Also, make sure to book a hotel room that can be canceled/rescheduled with no extra charge. When you book a hotel, obtain a hotel voucher to be submitted with your visa application. Ensure the names and dates on the voucher exactly match your passports and flight dates. Also look at how cool your name looks in Russian writing!

3. Packing Appropriately for a Winter Trip to Moscow

Travel to Moscow with kids and play in the snow

Visa applications complete and accommodations booked, you must now turn your mind to packing for the extreme cold. However, as you will also be visiting restaurants or ballets when you travel to Moscow with your kids, your normal hiking gear may not cut the mustard. It is the indoor/outdoor transition that makes city packing harder.

When we traveled to Moscow in February, the forecast was for lows of -20 C. No matter when you travel to Moscow, first check the Moscow weather averages . Although our children are pretty skinny, they were still able to roll in the snow to their heart’s content with the following gear:

Here is What We Brought

  • Waterproof socks – These were a recent discovery for me but an invaluable one. Bring them for all the family. Go for mid-shin rather than ankle length.
  • Waterproof Gore-Tex boots – Ankle boots were sufficient for the city snow when combined with waterproof socks, and they looked more acceptable than full on snow boots when indoors.
  • One pair of smart indoor shoes.
  • Thermal layer (top and bottoms) and a fleece layer – Thin layers are more versatile and fit into your bag.
  • Everyone should bring their own daypack for all the clothes you will be taking on and off.
  • Fleece-lined waterproof soft shell trousers – These look almost like normal trousers but keep your legs warm and dry. Full snow trousers would be impractical for walking around shops.
  • Everyday trousers to wear under the waterproof layer – Use these for eating out. The fancier restaurants have extensive subterranean cloakrooms, and you can de-robe and transform into your classy under layer self.
  • Thin merino wool scarf and hat.
  • Gloves – 2 pairs each for after dark when the temperatures plummet and your fingers freeze. At least one waterproof pair for snow-balling.
  • Winter coat – I went for sheepskin, but the rest of the family sported thin–ish ski jackets. The lighter and thinner without sacrificing warmth the better.
  • Photocopies of your passport and visa – There are rumors that police sometimes demand to see your papers, and then they refuse to return them unless you pay them money. The advice we followed was to leave the originals in the hotel, and only carry the copy-documents with you when you are out and about.

4. Learn a Bit of Russian

Use Duo lingo to learn the Russian alphabet, so you can read words like “pizza” on a menu.

5. Practice your Skating for Moscow

We had a couple of goes at home, as we were a bit scared there would be no sides in Gorky Park to hang on to.

6. Plan and Print your Moscow Metro Route

travel to Moscow with kids and use the metro

Make sure you use the Moscow Metro . The stations are works of art in their own right, filled with golden frescoes, fancy lighting and communist era sculptures .

If, like us, you neither speak nor read Russian, take the precaution of using Google Maps to plan all Metro journeys in the comfort of your own house, and print these off to take with you. Wifi is not always available when you are underground, so be prepared.

When you travel to Moscow with kids, let alone anyone, reading station names as they whip by is virtually impossible. By counting their number and with a quick scan of the first few characters, you can check them off against your map, and you stand a fighting chance of getting off at the right stop.

7. Plan Your Food

With a family, the need to eat is never more than a couple of hours away, so planning your food is quite important. While you’re in Moscow check out some of the local food to try in Russia . Also, book hotels that include breakfast, and stay in a hotel near a shopping centre. Then, at least it is only lunch you have to worry about. We went for the Novotel Moscow City Hotel , which is right next to a mall, a snowy park and a Metro stop. They allow four in a family room, and breakfast is free for under 15’s.

TIP : Food courts are good for picture menus and pointing based ordering.

Our Moscow Itinerary

TIP : Do not start your travel to Moscow with kids trip on a Monday – most of Moscow is closed.

Day 1 –   Lenin’s Tomb / GUM / Kitai Gorod / Kremlin at Night

All of these activities are accessible from Red Square, as this is the epicentre of Moscow. Arriving from a hotel in the monochrome world of the suburbs, you will be blown away by the riot of colour in the square.

Morning – Lenin’s Tomb

merino wool travel underwear

Cost : Free!

Location : Red Square

Opening Hours : 10 -1pm Tue-Thur and Sat (not public holidays)

Timing : Allow up to an hour (including queuing)

The queue for the security check for Lenin’s Tomb takes about 30 minutes. You then make your way past the tombs of the former Russian Presidents, lined up along the outside wall of the Kremlin. As you enter the mausoleum, warn your children not to speak, or they will be severely shushed by one of the armed guards. Do not laugh.

Shuffle your way past the embalmed body (not taking any photographs) and out the other side straight on to Red Square. The children can then impress their friends by telling them they have seen a dead body.

Lunch – Red Square (outside) or GUM (inside)

A family enjoying Russian blinis in Red Square in Moscow

For lunch, if you are giving up vitamins for your holidays, eat a traditional Russian blini (chocolate pancake) at one of the stalls in Red Square , or head inside to a café in GUM , the largest department store in Russia, next door. The name “GUM” comes from Glavny Universalny Magazin (“Main Department Store”), formerly Gosudarstvenny Universalny Magazin (“State Department Store”).

Afternoon – GUM

Russian Dolls tumbling from the ceiling in GUM

A good place to be indoors and warm up, this historic state shopping centre runs the length of Red Square, and it contains 200 (centrally heated) shops. Built in the 1890’s, it was nationalized after the revolution, and now it appears to be flirting with capitalism. It has a particularly impressive glass roof, and many high-end boutiques and cafes. Spend an hour or so exploring and having a coffee overlooking Red Square, and then head back outside.

Kitai Gorod

Travel to Moscow with Kids and view the Colorful toppings on the buildings of Kitai Gorod

As the sun lowers in the sky, explore the back streets behind Red Square, an area known as Kitai Gorod , where fondant fancy pink and white buildings glow in the evening light.

Kremlin at Night

Travel to Moscow with kids and see St Basil’s Cathedral by night - like a fairytale sultan’s hat

Then, head back into Red Square to see the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral magically illuminated at night.

Day 2 – Crown Jewels – Kremlin Armory / St Basil’s cathedral

The Golden cathedrals inside the Kremlin in Moscow

Cost : R1000 (under 16’s are free) for the Kremlin and the Armory

Location :  By the Kremlin walls, next to The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Opening Hours : [Museum opening hours 10:00 to 17:00] [Ticket office 9:30 to 16:30] [Closed – Thursdays]

Timing : Allow 2 hours for the armory and up to an hour for the cathedrals

Buying tickets is complicated. You can buy adult tickets up to 17 days in advance, but they do not guarantee entry for free ticket holders. Childrens’ free tickets are only available 45 minutes before each “session”, and tickets for the following session are only available after the current one has ended. All the rules are here .

In essence, to ensure you all get in together, arrive 45 minutes before opening time, and book all of your paid and free tickets at the same time.

Join the security queue for a bag search at the entrance, and then walk through into a world of golden topped white cathedrals. You enter the armory by way of a small door just on your left as you go in.

Here you will find the main event – the amazing Russian Crown Jewels. No photos are allowed inside but you will see Fabergé eggs, a fleet of royal carriages, thrones and gowns, 4 foot high jewel encrusted tomes, huge silver goblets and tigers – all brought to life through a free English audio guide.

If the crown jewels were not impressive enough for you, consider checking out some of these best Instagram sites in Moscow .

Afterwards, wander around the beautiful mosaiced edifices, and check out the tomb of Ivan the Terrible in the Archangel Cathedral.  (Under 14s are not allowed in The Great Bell tower.)

No food is available in the Kremlin, so head 5 minutes round the corner to a stall in Red Square or into GUM – depending on your budget and the weather.

Afternoon – St Basil’s Cathedral

Stripy, swirly, snow topped St Basil’s Cathedral while traveling to Moscow with kids

Cost : R500 (free for under 16’s)

Opening Hours : Check them out here .

Timing : 1 to 2 hours

Circumnavigate the incredible outside, looking up at the impossibly stripy and colorful domes, before exploring the golden interior of St. Basil’s Cathedral . Again, there is an English audio guide available.

Day 3 – Moscow Zoo / Gorky Park

An Arctic Wolf in the Moscow Zoo – right at home

Cost : R600 (children up to 17 free)

Location : 30 minutes from Red Square by Metro

Opening Hours : Open daily 9AM-5PM

Timing : Allow about 2 hours

In the winter you pretty much get the zoo to yourself. It was also a real bonus so see it knee deep in the snow. Extremely fluffy snow cats, mountain goats and arctic wolves looked right at home. The monkeys looked a long way from it, and the bears appeared to be hibernating. I did feel sorry for the creatures in the antipodean section.

There are plenty of indoor enclosures to escape the cold and lots of big animals to entertain the kids – giraffes, wolverines, musk oxen and elephants.

Most of the food stalls are closed in winter, but there is an indoor café serving hot drinks, cake and snacks inside the zoo.

Afternoon – Gorky Park

Tubing in Gorky Park when you travel to Moscow with kids

Cost : Tubing – ~R200, Skating – R100-R500 depending on the time

Location : 25 minutes by Metro from Red Square

Opening Hours : 10AM-3PM & 5PM-11PM Tue-Sun

Timing : As long as you’d like!

Gorky Park fronts the frozen Moscow river. Walk along its banks, and then fly on a rubber ring at speed in the tubing zone.

After dark, hire some skates, and take your place amongst pirouetting Russian experts on the largest, neon lit, disco ice rink in Europe. We were pleased to find that most of the pathways did have sides for clinging on to whilst finding our ice feet.

Family ice skating session in Gorky Park

A maze of park paths are transformed into an icy track that leads past towering illuminated cubes, walk-in-with-your-skates-on cafes and hot chocolate booths.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “disco lights” while traveling to Moscow with kids

Optional Moscow Extras When You Travel to Moscow With Kids

  • If you have more time, tickets to the Bolshoi Ballet are much cheaper than at home (note that under 16’s are not allowed to all performances).
  • For a spot of decadence, try the lunch menu at Café Pushkin , a former nobleman’s house, and dine amongst people in ball gowns in one of their themed rooms – a wooden panel pharmacy or antique filled library.
  • Consider catching the train to the equally beautiful St Petersburg, as covering more in one trip will save you the bother of another visa application for a return journey.

Kids playing out in a Russian park (Krasnaya)

Any travel to Moscow with kids is an off the beaten path adventure and certainly so in winter time. And although English is not widely spoken, the medium of mime does get you a long way. So, pack your bags, make sure you plan ahead, and craft your own Moscow family adventure!

If on the off chance this doesn’t all sound good to you, and if you’re looking for something that is the polar opposite of traveling to Moscow with kids in the winter time (pun intended), consider checking out this family friendly Bali off the beaten path itinerary . But no matter what you do, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below.

Thanks for the comments. I had always wanted to go to Russia, and had even considered a winter wonderland wedding there. It surpassed expectations, being less terrifying but more beautiful than I had imagined. Helen
