Isn't it such a good feeling to be back at gigs? That feeling of warm substance being thrown across the air at a venue and bass so loud your ears still ring the next day.
Leeds welcomed Kasabian for their first tour in three years with it also being guitarist Serge Pizzorno's first as frontman - he didn't let the band or Leeds' O2 Academy down.
Last July, Tom Meighan left as Kasabian’s singer, the day before his conviction for assault against his partner. The Leicester electronic-rock band have shown no sign of reconciliation with their former frontman of 23 years.
On Sunday night, 2,300 people packed into the O2 and saw Kasabian’s co-vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and producer, Sergio 'Serge' Pizzorno step up as frontman looking like he had always belonged in that role.

Admittedly, there was some apprehension as to whether Serge would live up to the standards of the band's former lead, but honestly I don't know why Kasabian had been hiding him as their deputy for all these years. It was as if he had practiced in front of the mirror his whole life, as he performed to the crowd with the same yobby energy, and was completely on fire.
The crowd certainly agreed as they chanted 'Sergio, Sergio' lifting the roof off the sold out venue last night, after the band opened with Club Foot.
"When this kicks in we bounce together," encouraged Serge and Leeds, of course, delivered.
There was nothing about Kasabian's performance that wasn't confident to the core, the mass hype that Kasabian inspire goes far beyond the lyrics, as the cocky performer encouraged the mosh pit at the front of the stage saying: "This is what I like to see, no one stands still at this gig."
He ordered the crowd to get on each others shoulders during Acid House and many duly followed the instruction.
Twice the band stood back to let the audience bellow the wordless refrain of LSF.
Serge said: "This has been insane, its been a mad one," it truly was.
"Thank you for your support, thank you for your love."
Before the encore, Serge said: "I want you to think about that time you were locked away, sat in your front room thinking let me go out, let me go see a gig, let me go and see my favourite rock band."
"You know what were stood here right now, and now's the moment for fire."
As riotous as ever, every single word of Fire was howled back at the band, right down to the guitar melodies.
I had the pleasure of seeing Kasabian back in December 2017, at Leeds First Direct Arena , at a time when Meighan was centre stage, but I 100 per cent I enjoyed Sunday's performance more.
It was one of the best atmospheres I've had the privilege of witnessing in a long time, and hats off to Serge as he completely stole the show.
Enter your postcode to see what's happening where you live
Serge signed off with praise and thanked the fans with not a word to the past as Kasabian look to the future.
The buzz continued into the streets of Leeds.
My only criticism of the whole night was £18 for two rum and Cokes!

Kasabian announce huge UK and Ireland shows for summer 2023
Including a massive outdoor show in Leeds
Kasabian have announced a headline outdoor show at Leeds Millennium Square set to take place next summer, as well as a selection of new and rescheduled shows in Ireland.
- READ MORE: Kasabian: “The band wanted to carry on. What else were we gonna do?”
The band claimed their sixth chart-topping album back in August with ‘The Alchemist’s Euphoria’ , and wrapped up their recent UK arena tour last month.
Serge Pizzorno, Chris Edwards, Ian Matthews and Tim Carter are already set to perform a handful of Irish dates in June, as well as Glasgow’s TRNSMT festival the following month.
The newly announced date at Leeds’ Millennium Square – which has featured some huge recent performances, including Richard Ashcroft back in July this year – will take place on July 7 2023, and promises some “very special guests”.
Kasabian have also shared details of their rescheduled Dublin date, a show at Limerick’s King John Castle, and an appearance at Sea Sessions in Bundoran, all taking place in June.
Tickets go on sale this Thursday (December 8) at 9.30am GMT, and will be available to buy here – see details of the new dates via the band’s recent tweets below.

In a four-star review of ‘The Alchemist’s Euphoria’ , NME wrote: “Kasabian have always been about having a good fucking time, and although this is understandably their most introspective record yet, it does point to euphoria ahead.”
“Back in May, the frontman told NME : ‘This album was just us saying, ‘Let’s see what we can do – let’s see where we can take this’.’ On the evidence of this surprising, eclectic and intimate record – which still finds time for the anthems of old – the answer is: as far as they want to.”

Hailing from Leicestershire, UK, Kasabian are one of the most recent bands to ascend to stadium playing levels of success this millennium. They’ve released five albums since forming in 1997, and are a quartet based around the creative duo of frontman Tom Meighan and Lead Guitarist Sergio Pizzorno.
They’re probably one of the most misunderstood, contrary bands in British rock right now, so of course they would also be one of the biggest. In 2014 alone they had a Pyramid Stage headliner slot at Glastonbury Festival , played a sold out show in their hometown of Leicester’s 60’000 capacity Victoria Park, released another number one album and capped it off with a sold out tour taking in five nights at Brixton Academy in London.
Yet that doesn’t mean that everyone, or indeed anyone, truly gets them. Many people peg them as heirs to Oasis’ lad rock crown but the band are far more interesting and uncompromising than that. They’ve always sounded more like a more techno-infused Stone Roses or a more guitar based Prodigy than any other bands who would never have even thought of taking up instruments if it wasn’t for “Definitely Maybe”.
For a band with such a populist touch (a Brit Award, millions of albums sold, headline slots at every major British festival there is) they have never lost their thrillingly weird side that has led to collaborations with everyone from Noel Fielding to Richard Ayoade, through to Gorillaz cohort Dan The Automator.
Truth is though, in lead guitarist, head songwriter and all around main man Sergio Pizzorno, they have a band leader who’s more adept at combining terrace anthem choruses with underground strangeness than any collaborator could possibly be. In Tom Meighan, they have one of the most charismatic, electric frontmen of their age. Their reign at the top will go on and on and on for a very good reason, there’s no one else around quite like them, in the U.K or anywhere else.
Live reviews
This is the second time I have since Kasabian in the last twelve months. A year ago I watched them in a smallish venue in Amsterdam (Paradiso) and managed to stand right at the front. That was a great gig. The Summer Solstice gig in Leicester was on a whole different level - it was awesome. The band absolutely killed it. The countdown on the back screen added to the anticipation, then as Shiva started up it intensified even more. As soon as Bumblebeee started the crowd went mad. We stood in front of the first barrier so pretty close to the stage but out of the moshpit. It was absolutely rammed in this area but all very good natured. Every song was full-on energy. Everyone was bouncing (some dancing but not much room to do it). The playlist was a brilliant mix of old and new tracks - everyone a killer (and there are other fantastic tracks which could have been included). The white backdrop to the stage ensured that you could easily see the group. The lighting and lasers added to the effect without overkill. The pink and white effect a total contrast to the (unfounded) view that they are just a lad's band. The crowd was a mix of young and old, male/female, and many family groups. At the end it was clear how much it meant to all of the band who constantly thanked the crowd. It was the best gig I have ever attended and I was still buzzing the following day. I highly recommend Kasabian gigs to anyone. It is difficult to pick out a highlight as the whole setlist was brilliantly put together.

What can you say about a Kasabian show? Glorious? Yes. Exuberant? Certainly. Defiant? Of course. But more than anything else simply ...Rocking.
From the first thumping chords of opener "Ill Ray" Kasabian announced their intent to deliver. Storming through a set list loaded with heady anthems, occasionally bringing the mood lower with numbers like the terrific "Goodbye Kiss", Kasabian had the whole arena eating out of their hands.
There's something special that happens when this band start to play in front of an audience. It's united - from those who just love the killer hooks to those who love that Kasabian really dont give a crap about the estaishment and really capture the spirit of rebellion. They're a band that capture the mood of the common person with lyrics at times partying and at other times sobering and thoughtful. But always hopeful - and with a joyous shout. A proper "fuck you" band exhorting the people to stand together and rise as one.
And rise the crowd did. Every single person in Leeds arena on their feet, jumping, dancing, singing - all together as one from those in the sweaty heaving mosh of the floor to those right at the very top of the top tier.
A marvellous night. Kasabian are the band that Oasis wished they were or xould have been.
Kasabian are one of those bands that you mention in America and no one knows. This is a double-edged sword. On the one hand you wish people would take notice and they would become successful do you can talk about them. On the other hand, they can remain a niche band and tour America in small, general admission venues for lower ticket prices. I prefer the latter option. The people that show up to those shows are the TRUE fans. And Kasabian delivers in spades.
Kasabian have the spark that a lot of big bands sorely lack, or have lost because they've gotten too famous. I have seen them twice, front row both times, both at the 9:30 Club in DC. They incorporate the crowd when they can, they dance, they move and they get the crowd off. It's hard to describe. I go to almost a dozen shows per year but Kasabian has both times been the best show I have ever seen. Then again, they are one of my favorite bands.
Not many bands can deliver the energy and presence required to rock a 100,000 person arena or stadium and translate that to a 2,000 person hall for an intimate show. Not many singers can make their voice ring clearly over the thunder of distorted guitars and hammering drums. Luckily for me and anyone else who caught the show last night at the Metro, Kasabian has both presence and a capable singer who did not disappoint even the most demanding of critics. I have loved this band for years now but I did not anticipate that they would still put on such a great live performance and play a healthy mix of classics and new material. I would heartily recommend this band as a great performance and I will be coming back for more if they ever come back to Chicago.
As a major fan of British/European music, I must say it is always a pleasure to see these bands in the US since a lot of them play in smaller places.
I've seen Kasabian 3 times and my wife has 9 times now. They NEVER disappoint and this show was the same.
The energy they bring is amazing time after time and their music is always fun. They also look like they are having a legit great time up there doing what they love to do.
I was up front and again (which I should have learned)I should have brought ear plugs! But, the sound is muffled when one does uses those, so if you can stand a few days of ringing, then don't worry about it.
Overall if you thinking of seeing them live please, please GO. You will leave a fan.
2009: I am 14, everybody is going crazy about Fire which was the first song I heard, and then Kasabian took my life by storm.
2011: Velociraptor! is out, adventurous and leaving behind all the bands which prefer to stay conservative and stand by classic sounding.
2014: I am 19, and 48:13 strikes with its sonic experimentation. It is colourful, wild, tentative and boundary-pushing.
2017: For crying out loud, so much awaited and so easy-to-love, prolongs the party which was carried to the concert. And it was a true madness fueled by our crazy love and the band’s response. Kasabian can be whatever band they want to be - they have our full support
Kasabian! They are not as famous as they should be in the U.S.! They know how to perform to make you want more and more! Almost a 2 hour show was amazing, perfectly created; song after song feels perfectly fited in time and atmosphere! They love their fans and they make sure you feel it! Definitely, one of the best shows I've ever been to! Don't believe me then try yourself and you won't be disappointed!
I have been attending Rock Werchter for over a decade but in the last edition, Kasabian really stood out on the main stage. They totally got me hooked with their energy, sound quality, musical diversity and excellent mix of guitars and electronics. Now, I have all their albums and love 'm all. I hope to see them a couple of times more.
To put it quite simply, it was one of the greatest nights of my life. I have been so excited to see Kasabian live since I first heard processed beats in 2005. The night was unparalleled, Tommy and serge were fantastic and the set was absolutely brilliant! I could never have imagined being at a better gig than that!
Saw these folk earlier in the year at Glasto, and had seen them on a further two occasions prior. Each time it gets successively better!
The energy, light/stage set and overall performances were all top-notch. The set was also just shy of a full two hours. Top effort and a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Kasabian announces new line-up and gig dates after Tom Meighan’s departure
Share this with
Kasabian has announced its new line-up following the departure of Tom Meighan.
Meighan, 40, left the rock band last July, with his departure announced the day before he pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend.
The band has now announced their first string of concert dates, and confirmed that touring guitarist Tim Carter is now part of the group.
It is believed that Serge Pizzorno will now assume full frontman duties.
Pizzorno, Ian Matthews and Chris Edwards said: ‘We’re incredibly excited to announce these intimate shows. We love our band, our music and our fans too much to ever stop!
‘We’ll be playing all the classic tunes plus something new for the mosh pit to bounce too. So come join us for the biggest party of 2021! See you there.’
The announcement of the gig also confirmed: ‘Kasabian are: Serge Pizzorno, bassist Chris Edwards, drummer Ian Matthews and guitarist Tim Carter.’
Carter has been touring with Kasabian since 2013, playing with the group at Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds, and he engineered their fifth album, 2014’s 48:13.
Kasabian will tour across the UK, playing in Glasgow, Liverpool, Cardiff, Leeds, Lincoln, Nottingham, Sheffield, Manchester, Norwich, Newcastle, Leicester, Bournemouth, Southampton, Bristol and London in October and November this year.
While many fans were excited about the announcement, others weren’t so keen on Kasabian continuing without Meighan, who helped found the band in 1997.
On July 6 2020, a statement from Kasabian read: ‘Tom Meighan is stepping down from Kasabian by mutual consent. Tom has struggled with personal issues that have affected his behaviour for quite some time and now wants to concentrate all his energies on getting his life back on track.’

The following day, Meighan appeared in court to plead guilty to a charge of assault.
The court heard that Meighan threatened his partner Vikki Ager with a wooden pallet, hit her in the face and pushed her into a hamster cage, with Ms Ager suffering bruising to her knees, left elbow, outer ankle and big toe as well as a reddening around the neck.
Meighan was sentenced to 200 hours unpaid work.
Speaking about the assault in an interview in December, he told Cornwall Live: ‘We had too much to drink. I regret everything that happened that night – what I can remember of it. I don’t condone it – it’s horrific. I love my partner to pieces.
‘I was at a boiling point in my life – I didn’t know where things were heading. I was drowning myself with drink because of my problems and things going on around me.
‘We had a fight and I took the brunt for it. I was fully responsible for what happened but we love each other and we’re getting over it.’
Ager has stood by the singer and insisted that he ‘isn’t a violent person’.
Meighan has since announced that he is working on solo projects, and isn’t sure if he’ll ever reunite with his bandmates.
After his conviction, Kasabian said they were ‘completely heartbroken’, and said they were ‘left with no choice’ but to ask Meighan to leave the band.
Kasabian’s tickets are on sale from June 4.
