National Tourism Careers Expo 2023 Inspires Youth in Tourism Industry '> National Tourism Careers Expo 2023 Inspires Youth in Tourism Industry

From September 29th to October 1st, 2023, the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA) played an active role in the esteemed National Tourism Careers Expo (NTCE) held at the NASREC exhibition center. The 2023 NTCE was a collaborative effort between the Department of Tourism, CATHSSETA, and the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, represented by the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA).

Under the theme “Tourism Investments for People, Planet, and Prosperity,” the 2023 NTCE aimed to inspire and encourage young individuals to think innovatively and pursue sustainable livelihoods within the tourism industry through entrepreneurship and government-led programs.

The expo featured a diverse range of activities and events that engaged and educated attendees, making it a resounding success. Some of the notable highlights included motivational talks by prominent local figures in the tourism industry. These figures shared their experiences and insights with the audience, providing inspiration to the next generation of tourism professionals.

In addition to these motivational talks, NTCE 2023 hosted seminars aimed at educators specialising in tourism, ensuring that the knowledge and expertise are effectively passed down to future generations. This educational component contributed to the overarching goal of the expo – nurturing talent and providing learners with a clearer understanding of the potential career paths in tourism.

Exhibitions showcasing local tourism products and related services were another key feature of the event. This allowed attendees to explore and connect with various facets of the industry, further expanding their knowledge and potential career prospects.

Live sessions brought the expo to life, with specialised corners catering to different interests. The “Chef’s Corner” featured a cook-off by graduates of the National Youth Chefs Training Program, offering a glimpse into the world of culinary arts. The “Mixology Corner” demonstrated the art of delightful crafting beverages and cocktails, while the “Hospitality Corner” provided insights into diverse careers within the realm of hotel and event management.

The “Conservation Corner” highlighted the critical importance of nature conservation for the sustainability of tourism. Young individuals with a passion for nature and tourism gained valuable insights on how to join this industry and make a positive impact.

For job seekers and potential employers, the “Virtual Classroom & Recruitment Arena” provided a space to interact, exchange ideas, and discuss various aspects related to job hunting, crafting effective resumes (CVs), and preparing for interviews.

Moreover, the Educators’ Seminar served as a pivotal platform for educators to interact with speakers from a variety of institutions, industry bodies, and organisations.

The commitment demonstrated by the host province in bringing in experts from the tourism and hospitality sectors elevated the NTCE 2023 to a new level of excellence. The event not only inspired the youth but also reinforced the importance of a sustainable and innovative approach to the tourism industry, ultimately benefiting both people and the planet.

The NTCE 2023 successfully ignited a passion for tourism careers and provided a platform for young people to explore the industry’s diverse opportunities, promoting the growth and sustainability of the tourism sector in South Africa.

National Tourism Careers Expo welcomes 10 000 attendees

national tourism career expo 2023

This past weekend’s National Tourism Careers Expo in Gauteng has been hailed a great success, with as many as 97 exhibitors and registrations topping 10 000.

Marks Thibela , CEO of the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sports Education Training Authority (CATHSSETA) said the primary objective of the Expo was to provide comprehensive career guidance to students from grades 9 to 12, as well as to those in Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions and universities, alongside unemployed graduates.

“ Career guidance is one of the eight outcomes that are encapsulated in the National Skills Development Plan 2023, which replaced the National Skills Development Strategy. Hence CATHSSETA has, over the years, disbursed discretionary grant funding to various stakeholders in support of skills development initiatives that are aimed at addressing the skills shortage in the country.”

Fish Mahlalela , Deputy Minister of Tourism, told expo attendees that the optimal rejuvenation of tourism following the COVID-19 pandemic would require an inclusive and transformative approach that ensured that all, in particular the youth and women, enjoyed the benefits of the success of the sector.

“As government, our approach to a skills revolution is to assist people to upskill and future-proof themselves in the light of this fast-changing work environment to mitigate the impact of triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality.”

Mahlalela made reference to a 2021 UNICEF report which found that young people were unable to access skills needed for today’s job market.

“Governments and businesses are urged to address the global skills gap and decrease youth unemployment. [The report] notes that there is a disconnect between requirements and education and training systems,” he said.

He also called on youth to seriously take up all available opportunities being provided by government, as quick fixes and short-cuts to economic empowerment had not provided a sustainable solution to the socio-economic challenges facing the country.

Gauteng tourism to receive economic boost

Gauteng’s tourism industry is set to receive a major economic boost from the Provincial Government, according to MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture, and Rural Development, Tasneem Motara .

Addressing guests at the NTCE, Motara said the Gauteng Provincial Government had identified 10 high-growth sectors for economic inclusion and expansion and tourism was one of these.

“Tourism sits up there with sectors such as ICT, manufacturing, finance, and mining and contributes greatly to Gauteng’s GDP and GDP of South Africa. We are going to focus on economic support for these sectors through additional policy imperatives and guidance, additional funding support, infrastructure support and establishing partnerships.”

THE national department of Tourism and the Gauteng department of Economic Development announced the upcoming National Tourism Careers Expo 2023 to be held at Nasrec, and expected to draw as many as 10 000 learners and teachers from across the country.

The Department of Tourism, Culture Arts, Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education Training Authority (CATHSSETA), in conjunction with the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, and its provincial marketing agency, the Gauteng Tourism Authority, will be launching the collaborative effort, under the theme “Tourism Investments for People, Planet and Prosperity” from 29 September to 1 October.

Launching the NTCE 2023, the Deputy Minister of Tourism Fish Mahlalela said South Africa was rebuilding its tourism sector to ensure its sustainability for future generations.

“A robust recovery plan needs to be firmly anchored in a bold strategy that will position the economy on an upward trajectory and growth path. But to drive the growth and recovery of the tourism sector, we need to boost the talent pool, and therefore a demand-led skills supply is therefore pivotal,” said Mahlalela.

The ministry said that entrance to the NTCE 2023 will be free and include motivational talks by leading local tourism entrepreneurs and personalities, tourism educator seminars, exhibitions by local tourism products and related services.

This follows on the impact of Covid-19 and the slow but steady recovery of the tourism industry, as well as government’s attempts at mitigating the notoriously high youth unemployment rate.

However, the tourism sector in South Africa faces several impediments to growth and development, which obstruct job creation. Some of these challenges include crime, a lack of funding and skills, and immigration problems.

Tourism South Africa, the tourism marketing arm of the South African government, has previously come under serious criticism in parliament for receiving a qualified audit opinion from the Auditor General for the 2020/2021 financial year. The first time in 17 years that this had happened.

In addition, this follows on the recent compromise reached between Cabinet, the Tourism department, and organisations such as Afriforum, in effectively adjusting the Tourism Equity Fund (TEF) from 51% to 30% in the requirements for Black ownership in the R1.2 billion fund.

The TEF is an equity acquisition fund managed by the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (Sefa) on behalf of the Department of Tourism, with the purpose to promote the participation of Black enterprises within the tourism industry and provide a combination of debt finance and grant to facilitate equity acquisition and new project development in the tourism sector by black entrepreneurs.

The department said that it will capitalise the fund with an amount of R540 million, which will be matched by a contribution of R120m from the Small Enterprise Finance Agency, and R594m from commercial banks that will be participating in the programme.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said last week that the target was to have the TEF fully disbursed by March next year and to develop and implement mechanisms to unlock the implementation of the TEF to ensure black ownership within the confines of the law and support small to medium enterprises in the tourism sector.

GAUTENG – On-line registration for South Africa’s flagship careers event, the National Tourism Careers Expo 2023 (NTCE) is open. As many as 10 000 learners and teachers are expected to participate in this year’s three-day event at the Johannesburg Expo Centre - NASREC - from 29 September to 01 October 2023.

In its 13th year the Tourism Careers Expo is a collaborative effort between the Department of Tourism, Culture Arts, Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education Training Authority (CATHSSETA), the Gauteng Department of Economic Development and its provincial marketing agency the Gauteng Tourism Authority.

Since its inception in 2008, the NTCE is held annually and it bridges the information gap between the tourism industry and learners, and offered unemployed youth an opportunity to directly interact with potential employers.

The Gauteng Province has successfully hosted the youth expo since 2021, introducing more than 5283 learners,1335 university and FET college students, 263 unemployed youth and 688 educators to potential career paths and vocation in the tourism sector. Over the past two years, the NTCE created temporary employment and business opportunities for the community of Soweto, Nasrec, Riverlea and surrounding areas.

The 2023 leg of the NTCE will highlight the significance of government and private sector investment in growing tourism. Themed “Tourism Investments for People, Planet and Prosperity,” the expo will showcase how investments create opportunities that empower communities, in a manner that conserves and sustains the environment, and drives innovation and prosperity for all.

“Tourism is a conduit for people to learn new things and discover the world through its diverse cultures. The NTCE 2023 will reassure young people that tourism is a viable career or business of choice. Career opportunities in tourism are limitless, and we invite the youth to find their niche in the tourism value chain,” concluded the Mahlalela.

Entrance to the 2023 NTCE is free and will include motivational talks by leading local tourism entrepreneurs and personalities, tourism educator seminars, exhibitions by local tourism products and related services. It will also feature the following live engagements which are set to captivate learners:

• The Chef’s Corner is a cook-off by graduates of the National Youth Chefs Training Programme facilitated by the South African Chefs Association. This is a firm favourite for youth interested in a culinary career.

• The Mixology Corner will bring the art of creating fun, enjoyable beverages to life. Mixology is a special craft and an age-old tradition of skillfully mixing various drinks and ingredients to create cocktails with or without alcohol. While mixology and bartending are related, it is generally accepted that a mixologist creates innovative cocktails often using unique or uncommon ingredients and researches and reimagines classic cocktails.

• Hospitality Corner: The Hospitality Corner will offer insight into the diverse range of careers from hotel and event management to casino directors.

• Conservation Corner: Nature conservation has a direct impact on the future sustainability of tourism. Youth interested in nature and tourism will gain insight into how to join this industry.

• The Virtual Classroom and Recruitment Arena is the place where job seekers can engage with potential employers and get the low-down on job hunting, what employers are looking for, how to craft a CV and how to prepare for interviews.

• Educators’ Seminar provides an opportunity for educators to interact with speakers from various institutions, industry bodies and organisations.

Tourism hosts National Tourism Careers Expo, 25 to 27 Mar

Tourism is an ideal industry to promote youth employment.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism Mr. Fish Mahlalela today launched the 2021 National Tourism Careers Expo (NTCE) which will take place at the Joburg Expo Centre at Nasrec from Friday, March 25, to Sunday, March 27.

“The NTCE will assist in driving the goal of the National Tourism Sector Strategy to create an additional 300 000 tourism job opportunities by 2026,” he said.

The NTCE aims to help create and build jobs in the tourism industry and takes place this month with the theme Rebuilding A Resilient And Inclusive Tourism Sector For The Future. This is the 12th hosting of the expo which was postponed last year to March because of the COVID-19 pandemic and is the first time it has taken place in Gauteng.

As well as the not-to-be-missed three-day live in-person event there is also an exciting virtual component, which will allow visitors from other provinces to attend online.

The NTCE will showcase careers, skills development initiatives and business opportunities that exist within the tourism sphere. Since its inception in 2008, it has successfully bridged the information gap between the industry and learners and offered the youth an opportunity to interact directly with potential employers in the sector.

It also shares valuable and up-to-date insights into South Africa’s tourism and hospitality industries as they return to a new normal following the pandemic. The event is free-of-charge upon pre-registration.

It is aimed at Grade 8 to 12 learners; university, FET (further education and training), TVET (technical and vocational education and training) college students and unemployed graduates to see what the tourism and hospitality industries have to offer in terms of career, entrepreneurial and job opportunities.

The event also provides an opportunity for tourism curricula experts to share information with tourism educators and learners and for stakeholders within the sector to share information on diverse careers available in the sector. It is designed to bridge the information gap between the industry, government, learners and educators.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism Mr. Fish Mahlalela spoke about the impact the pandemic had upon the sector and what government was doing to assist in its rebuilding.

“Tourism was all but decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This sector was the first to close when travel ground to a halt globally and the last to partially re-open. It was a catastrophe of note, decimating both lives and livelihoods,” he said.

“The tourism sector is one of the critical intervention areas that has been identified in the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan as it is a key driver of economic recovery in South Africa. Tourism is the world’s fastest growing employment sector that continues to adapt to new trends.

“To drive growth and recovery of the tourism sector, we need to boost the talent pool. A demand-led skills supply in the sector is therefore pivotal. While tourism is a significant economic lever, it is so much more than generating revenue. Tourism is a people-centric sector with people at the heart of its brand,” he continued.

“Young people are a prominent and significant demographic that must be involved in the economic emancipation of our nation; this they can only do through arming themselves with education. As government, we want to expose young people to the opportunities to better their lives, hence the National Tourism Careers Expo,” he concluded.

His views were echoed by the CEO of the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) Mr. Sthembiso Dlamini who was also at the launch: “The NTCE’s theme Rebuilding A Resilient And Inclusive Tourism Sector For The Future reinforces the fact that tourism continues to be the most vulnerable to disasters and other disruptions. COVID-19 is a classic example of how the sector and its entire value chain collapsed.”

The NTCE aims to facilitate interaction between tourism stakeholders and educators as well as learners so that information and knowledge can be shared on available education and training opportunities as well as to show case available tourism professional opportunities and their worth in the South African and global economy.

Highlights include:

  • Motivational talks by leading South African tourism entrepreneurs and personalities
  • Exhibitions of South African tourism products and related services
  • Specific platforms highlighting tourism career opportunities
  • Platforms assisting youths to prepare for entrepreneurial development and job opportunities
  • Interesting interactive platforms
  • Learner competitions and debates
  • Tourism educator seminars
  • Digital and social media platforms designed to profile tourism career opportunities

The event is hosted by the Department of Tourism in collaboration with the Culture Arts, Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education Training Authority (CATHSSETA), the Gauteng Department of Economic Development represented by its provincial marketing agency, the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA).

Career expo leaves learners excited for the future

The learners were in high spirits and excited to learn about their prospects after school..

national tourism career expo 2023

Carnival City held their annual career expo for matriculants from selected schools last Wednesday in the Rio Rooms.

Three-hundred-and-sixty Grade 12 learners received motivational talks and found out from exhibitors about options after school.

Learners from the schools that attended were Brakpan High, Dalpark Secondary, Nigel Secondary, Tlakula Secondary, Geluksdal and NN Ndebele Secondary.

Carnival City’s general manager Bryan O’Connor addressed them, as well as Goodwill Ndou, a spokesperson for the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA); the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation; and Lerato Masite, an attorney.

“Events like this mean a lot. It is important to learn about our career prospects,” said Sandile Mthimunye from Tlakula Secondary School.

The event, sponsored by Carnival City, Sci-Com, and the Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB), helped learners explore different career choices.

“Sun International has a huge focus on job creation, with Carnival City alone providing over 800 jobs,” O’Connor explained to the learners.

O’Connor said because he didn’t know what to do after school, he started working as a cashier, where he realised he loved working with people.

“I went to hotel school, then started with Sun International in 2003, where I grew, studied, developed myself and used opportunities provided by the company to progress. I opened four casinos for Sun International before making my way to Carnival City,” he explained.

national tourism career expo 2023

NYDA provided information about the entrepreneurial grants it provides for youth who want to start a business.

After a message about responsible gambling, the learners played a quick game of 30 seconds, where learner representatives from each school received a name and had to describe the person for their school to guess.

After this, Masite addressed the learners. She first had the learners recite positive affirmations, telling them to say these to themselves each morning before school to build confidence.

She then shared her five guidelines to success, which are to believe in yourself; have the right friends; grab every opportunity that comes your way; be prepared for hardships; and be authentic.

“Show up daily with a smile, even when struggling, and be yourself. Remember, an original is worth more than a copy,” she explained.

“To the ladies, you are high value and more precious than rubies. No is a full sentence. You have the capability for change to say no to the things that do not serve you.

“To the gentlemen, society places a lot of pressure on you. ‘Boys don’t cry’ is toxic. If you feel the need to cry or show emotions, do so. Don’t compare yourself to other men.

“Good habits you formed in youth make all the difference, and you are the difference,” she concluded.

After the guest speakers addressed the learners, they moved to the next hall to view the exhibits by various organisations, tertiary education institutions, and government agencies.

“It is important to us to give back to the community, and encourage the youth to take care of themselves and learn about the opportunities out there for them,“ he explained.

“The GGB issues bursaries and internships to help the youth secure employment, and in the last financial year, we employed 50 graduate interns to give them work experience.

“We also wanted to use this opportunity to discourage the youth from gambling, which they often regard as making a quick buck,” he concluded.

Other exhibitors included Gauteng departments of economic development, tourism, consumer affairs, the liquor board; NYDA, International Hotel School, Ekurhuleni East and West Colleges, SAPS, various private universities and colleges, and group exhibitors for the fields of animation, psychology and entertainment.
