National Tourism Career Expo 2023 Lifts Off

12 SEPTEMBER, 2023 GAUTENG – On-line registration for South Africa’s flagship careers event, the National Tourism Careers Expo 2023 (NTCE) is open. As many as 10 000 learners and teachers are expected to participate in this year’s three-day event at the Johannesburg Expo Centre – NASREC – from 29 September to 01 October 2023.

In its 13th year the Tourism Careers Expo is a collaborative effort between the Department of Tourism, Culture Arts, Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education Training Authority (CATHSSETA), the Gauteng Department of Economic Development and its provincial marketing agency the Gauteng Tourism Authority.

Launching the NTCE 2023, the Deputy Minister of Tourism Fish Mahlalela said South Africa was rebuilding its tourism sector to ensure its sustainability for future generations. “A robust recovery plan needs to be firmly anchored in a bold strategy that will position the economy on an upward trajectory and growth path. But to drive the growth and recovery of the tourism sector, we need to boost the talent pool, and therefore a demand-led skills supply is therefore pivotal,” said Mahlalela.

Since its inception in 2008, the NTCE is held annually and it bridges the information gap between the tourism industry and learners, and offered unemployed youth an opportunity to directly interact with potential employers.

The Gauteng Province has successfully hosted the youth expo since 2021, introducing more than 5283 learners,1335 university and FET college students, 263 unemployed youth and 688 educators to potential career paths and vocation in the tourism sector. Over the past two years, the NTCE created temporary employment and business opportunities for the community of Soweto, Nasrec, Riverlea and surrounding areas.

The 2023 leg of the NTCE will highlight the significance of government and private sector investment in growing tourism. Themed “Tourism Investments for People, Planet and Prosperity,” the expo will showcase how investments create opportunities that empower communities, in a manner that conserves and sustains the environment, and drives innovation and prosperity for all. “Tourism is a conduit for people to learn new things and discover the world through its diverse cultures. The NTCE 2023 will reassure young people that tourism is a viable career or business of choice. Career opportunities in tourism are limitless, and we invite the youth to find their niche in the tourism value chain,” concluded the Mahlalela.

THE national department of Tourism and the Gauteng department of Economic Development announced the upcoming National Tourism Careers Expo 2023 to be held at Nasrec, and expected to draw as many as 10 000 learners and teachers from across the country.

The Department of Tourism, Culture Arts, Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education Training Authority (CATHSSETA), in conjunction with the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, and its provincial marketing agency, the Gauteng Tourism Authority, will be launching the collaborative effort, under the theme “Tourism Investments for People, Planet and Prosperity” from 29 September to 1 October.

The ministry said that entrance to the NTCE 2023 will be free and include motivational talks by leading local tourism entrepreneurs and personalities, tourism educator seminars, exhibitions by local tourism products and related services.

This follows on the impact of Covid-19 and the slow but steady recovery of the tourism industry, as well as government’s attempts at mitigating the notoriously high youth unemployment rate.

However, the tourism sector in South Africa faces several impediments to growth and development, which obstruct job creation. Some of these challenges include crime, a lack of funding and skills, and immigration problems.

Tourism South Africa, the tourism marketing arm of the South African government, has previously come under serious criticism in parliament for receiving a qualified audit opinion from the Auditor General for the 2020/2021 financial year. The first time in 17 years that this had happened.

In addition, this follows on the recent compromise reached between Cabinet, the Tourism department, and organisations such as Afriforum, in effectively adjusting the Tourism Equity Fund (TEF) from 51% to 30% in the requirements for Black ownership in the R1.2 billion fund.

The TEF is an equity acquisition fund managed by the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (Sefa) on behalf of the Department of Tourism, with the purpose to promote the participation of Black enterprises within the tourism industry and provide a combination of debt finance and grant to facilitate equity acquisition and new project development in the tourism sector by black entrepreneurs.

The department said that it will capitalise the fund with an amount of R540 million, which will be matched by a contribution of R120m from the Small Enterprise Finance Agency, and R594m from commercial banks that will be participating in the programme.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said last week that the target was to have the TEF fully disbursed by March next year and to develop and implement mechanisms to unlock the implementation of the TEF to ensure black ownership within the confines of the law and support small to medium enterprises in the tourism sector.

The theme of this year’s Expo is Tourism Investments for People, Planet and Prosperity .

Collaborative Effort

The 2023 Expo is a collaborative initiative between various government departments including the Department of Tourism, Culture Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and tourism and Sport Education Training Authority (CATHSSETA), the Gauteng Department of Economic Development and its provincial marketing agency, the Gauteng Tourism Authority . Scheduled to take place from 29 September to 01 October 2023 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre (NASREC), the event is expected to attract as many as 10 000 learners and teachers.

Since its inception in 2008, the NTCE has aimed to bridge the information gap between the tourism industry and learners. Furthermore, it creates temporary employment and business opportunities for the surrounding communities of Soweto, Riverlea and Nasrec.

Expo as Job Creator in Tourism Careers in South Africa

In his address, Mahlalela said his department wants to use the Expo to drive the goal of the National Tourism Sector Strategy to create an additional 300 000 tourism jobs opportunities by 2026. South Africa faces an alarming youth unemployment crisis which has been described by various experts as “a social ticking time bomb” if nothing drastic and urgent is done to address it. Mahlalela said the theme was chosen to highlight how the government, sector stakeholders and private sector have invested in tourism to drive initiatives that create opportunities.

“The theme also gives expression to our vision of being a leading platform for communicating career paths, jobs and entrepreneurial prospects and further education opportunities in the tourism sector. Our mission is to inspire the present and prospective tourism learners and unemployed youth to rise to new heights in tourism careers and other professional opportunities,” said Mahlalela.

Tourism Critical for Driving Economic Growth

According to Mahlalela, the tourism sector is a critical intervention area at the heart of government’s Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan and is vital in driving the country’s economic recovery. In addition, said the minister, his department and other role-players have developed a tourism sector recovery plan anchored on three interlinked pillars or strategic themes; protecting and rejuvenating supply, reigniting demand and strengthening enabling capability for long term sustainability.

Many Career Opportunities in Hospitality and Tourism

Mahlalela further said that tourism is a people-centred interactive service industry striving to create memorable travel experiences. “The travel and tourism industry is highly competitive, innovative and always adapting to new trends and technologies, offering a plethora of career opportunities ranging from food and beverage, cruise ships, transport, adventure tourism, travel trade, events and conferences, tour operators, tourism entrepreneurs and travel bloggers.

Tourism hosts National Tourism Careers Expo, 25 to 27 Mar

Tourism is an ideal industry to promote youth employment.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism Mr. Fish Mahlalela today launched the 2021 National Tourism Careers Expo (NTCE) which will take place at the Joburg Expo Centre at Nasrec from Friday, March 25, to Sunday, March 27.

“The NTCE will assist in driving the goal of the National Tourism Sector Strategy to create an additional 300 000 tourism job opportunities by 2026,” he said.

The NTCE aims to help create and build jobs in the tourism industry and takes place this month with the theme Rebuilding A Resilient And Inclusive Tourism Sector For The Future. This is the 12th hosting of the expo which was postponed last year to March because of the COVID-19 pandemic and is the first time it has taken place in Gauteng.

As well as the not-to-be-missed three-day live in-person event there is also an exciting virtual component, which will allow visitors from other provinces to attend online.

The NTCE will showcase careers, skills development initiatives and business opportunities that exist within the tourism sphere. Since its inception in 2008, it has successfully bridged the information gap between the industry and learners and offered the youth an opportunity to interact directly with potential employers in the sector.

It also shares valuable and up-to-date insights into South Africa’s tourism and hospitality industries as they return to a new normal following the pandemic. The event is free-of-charge upon pre-registration.

It is aimed at Grade 8 to 12 learners; university, FET (further education and training), TVET (technical and vocational education and training) college students and unemployed graduates to see what the tourism and hospitality industries have to offer in terms of career, entrepreneurial and job opportunities.

The event also provides an opportunity for tourism curricula experts to share information with tourism educators and learners and for stakeholders within the sector to share information on diverse careers available in the sector. It is designed to bridge the information gap between the industry, government, learners and educators.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism Mr. Fish Mahlalela spoke about the impact the pandemic had upon the sector and what government was doing to assist in its rebuilding.

“Tourism was all but decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This sector was the first to close when travel ground to a halt globally and the last to partially re-open. It was a catastrophe of note, decimating both lives and livelihoods,” he said.

“The tourism sector is one of the critical intervention areas that has been identified in the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan as it is a key driver of economic recovery in South Africa. Tourism is the world’s fastest growing employment sector that continues to adapt to new trends.

“To drive growth and recovery of the tourism sector, we need to boost the talent pool. A demand-led skills supply in the sector is therefore pivotal. While tourism is a significant economic lever, it is so much more than generating revenue. Tourism is a people-centric sector with people at the heart of its brand,” he continued.

“Young people are a prominent and significant demographic that must be involved in the economic emancipation of our nation; this they can only do through arming themselves with education. As government, we want to expose young people to the opportunities to better their lives, hence the National Tourism Careers Expo,” he concluded.

His views were echoed by the CEO of the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) Mr. Sthembiso Dlamini who was also at the launch: “The NTCE’s theme Rebuilding A Resilient And Inclusive Tourism Sector For The Future reinforces the fact that tourism continues to be the most vulnerable to disasters and other disruptions. COVID-19 is a classic example of how the sector and its entire value chain collapsed.”

The NTCE aims to facilitate interaction between tourism stakeholders and educators as well as learners so that information and knowledge can be shared on available education and training opportunities as well as to show case available tourism professional opportunities and their worth in the South African and global economy.

Highlights include:

  • Motivational talks by leading South African tourism entrepreneurs and personalities
  • Exhibitions of South African tourism products and related services
  • Specific platforms highlighting tourism career opportunities
  • Platforms assisting youths to prepare for entrepreneurial development and job opportunities
  • Interesting interactive platforms
  • Learner competitions and debates
  • Tourism educator seminars
  • Digital and social media platforms designed to profile tourism career opportunities

The event is hosted by the Department of Tourism in collaboration with the Culture Arts, Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education Training Authority (CATHSSETA), the Gauteng Department of Economic Development represented by its provincial marketing agency, the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA).

More than 8,000 Attend the Department’s Largest Hiring Event

On June 27 and 28, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) successfully hosted its largest-ever hiring event, the DHS Career Expo . During the two-day event, more than 8,000 potential candidates visited the Dulles Expo Center for the opportunity to interview for one of the Department’s hundreds of mission critical positions. DHS interviewed more than 1,200 candidates and extended over 540 tentative job offers (TJOs) with more TJOs anticipated in the coming weeks.

DHS Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Secretary Canegallo visits the DHS Women in Law Enforcement booth.

"With the threats facing the Nation constantly evolving, keeping our communities safe requires a skilled and diverse workforce that brings new ideas, experiences, and perspectives to the table,” said the Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Secretary Kristie Canegallo. “The DHS Career Expo provided potential new team members a unique platform to learn what the DHS workforce does to protect the American people and become part of this amazing team.”

Candidates traveled from across the country to attend the Department’s annual hiring event. Inside the expo center, candidates had the opportunity to visit over two dozen booths where DHS hiring managers, recruiters, and representatives shared information and answered questions about the Department’s various missions, job openings, and employee programs.

The main goal of this annual hiring event was to accelerate the hiring process “The DHS Career Expo was a one-stop-shop,” said Sharon Wong, the DHS Chief Employee Experience Officer. “Attendees were able to come in with their resume, talk to a recruiter or a hiring manager, be interviewed on-site, and if they met qualifications, be offered a tentative job offer.
