Azadi Tower

The capital’s most conspicuous architectural landmark is the large marble Azadi Tower, constructed in 1971asagatewaytothecity. The monument, which is the symbol of Tehran, was designed by a young Iranian architect Hosain Amanat in an area of 400 m. The main feature is an imposing archway, 21 meters high, reminiscent of the ancient royal palace at Ctesiphon, the seat of the pre-Islamic Sassanian dynasty.

Above the arch is a tower with tiled turrets inspired by the architecture of the Seljuqs and Safavids.

From the top, 45 meters above the ground, a magnificent view of Tehran and the surrounding countryside may be enjoyed. The monument houses a small archaeological museum in the basement.

Azadi Tower

History of Azadi Tower

The architect, Hossein Amanat, started constructing the tower in 1972 after he won a competition to design a monument. The last Shah of Iran commissioned the monument. Mohammad Reza Pahlavi wanted the tower to commemorate the 2500th year of the Persian Empire. Azadi Tower represents Iran’s great history and heritage in tandem with contemporary achievements and development.

The architect of the monument, Hossein Amanat, won the nationwide competition. They first referred to the tower as Darvaze ye Kurosh – The Gate of Cyrus. They decided to name it officially to Shahyad Aryamehr (Shahyad tower)– Shah’s Memorial Tower. For the next seven years, the name remained the same, resembling the 2500th anniversary of the Persian empire until the Islamic revolution. In 1979 (after the 1979 Islamic revolution), the tower got the name we know today – (Borj-e Āzādi), which literally means freedom; Freedom Tower.

Mehrabad International Airport and Western Bus Terminal are also located within walking distance from the square. That’s why Azadi Tower is also referred to as “ Tehran gate”. From here you can take a BRT bus or metro to the city center to continue your tour. Azadi Tower is located between Meydan-e Azadi and Ostad Moen stations of the yellow line of Tehran metro. You can choose any of them and reach Azadi tower with 5 minutes of walking.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line #1 goes from the East of the city to the West, passing Ferdowsi square, Teatr-e Shahr metro station, and Enghelab square. You can take a bus from there to Azadi stop to reach the tower.

Azadi Tower (Borj-e Azadi)

Top choice in Tehran

The inverted-Y-shaped Azadi Tower, built in 1971 to commemorate the 2500th anniversary of the first Persian empire, is one of Tehran's visual icons. Designed by Hossein Amanat, it ingeniously combines modern architecture with traditional Iranian influences, most notably the iwan -style of the arch, which is clad in 8000 pieces of white marble. It's worth going inside to see the complex structural engineering that forms the bones of the design and for the view from the gallery at the top.

You can reach the top by stairs or lift. At the base are galleries with changing exhibitions and a cafe.

To reach the tower, which sits in a large oval park, you'll need to tentatively negotiate the maelstrom of traffic that is an almost constant feature of the square.

Azadi Sq was the scene of much protest during the 1979 revolution and remains a focal point for demonstrations today, including some huge demonstrations during the post-election crisis in 2009.

Azadi Tower

Azadi Tower (Persian: برج آزادی‎, Borj-e Azadi) is one of the tourist attractions in Tehran, Iran. Due to the proximity of this majestic monument to Mehrabad International Airport, many tourists will be getting acquainted with this place as photography upon their arrival. This tower with its stunning architecture is located in the middle of Azadi Square, the main entrance and exit of the city. Every day, many In-city and out-of-city trips are made through it, so it is marked as the western gate of the city. Azadi Tower was designed around 1971 by Hossein Amanat, a young Iranian architect, and was built by Mohammad Pourfathi.

In 1967, a competition was held among the Iranian architecture to design a symbol for the country. The engineer  (Hossein Amanat) who graduated from the Tehran University won and was selected for the construction. In 1972, the Azadi tower was put into operation under the name of Shahyad Tower. It was registered in the list of national monuments of Iran on March 16, 1972.

Tower architecture is a combination of Sassanid, Achaemenid, and Islamic architecture. The main arch inside the tower is a symbol of the Sassanid era, the parallel bases are reminiscent of the Achaemenid style of architecture, and its upper arch is inspired by Islamic architecture.

Hossein Amanat used the features of Iranian architecture such as a Windcatcher, Chahartaq, Persian garden, Iranian bazaar, and spectacular tiles to double the beauty of this monument and to help tourists to understand the Iranian culture and civilization.

The area of the square is 78,000 square meters. This tower is built as a gate with a height of about 45 meters from the ground and has eight separate sections. The width of this building is 64 meters. Around the tower is planted with beautiful flowers. Iron and Isfahan-marble have been used in the construction of the tower. Muqarnas and beautiful decorations added to this architectural masterpiece.

In this tower, 4 facades are considered which are symmetrical with each other; of course, the main views of the west and east are the ones that attract more attention. It consists of four floors with two staircases and four elevators. Hamedan granite stone has been used in the construction of the main doors, and the stones of the floors are from the stones of Kurdistan Pearl Mine. In the basement of the tower, there are several theaters, galleries, libraries, and museums.

This monument was built in 1971 in commemoration of the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire, commissioned by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last king of Iran.

The architect, Hossein Amanat, won the competition to design the Azadi Tower architecture, combining elements of Sassanid & Islamic architecture.

The tower is 45 meters height and has four floors with the Azadi museum underground. There are two stairways with 682 stairs and four elevators, which are symmetrical on both sides of the tower.

How to get to Azadi Tower?

To reach Azadi Tower, take line 4 (color-coded light blue) of the Tehran Metro to Meydan-e-Azadi .  Be careful; don’t get confused by other Azadi stations.

Other public transport choices are to take the Bus Rapid Transit Network in Iran (BRT) buses to Azadi station or take normal buses to Azadi terminals.

A Brief Summary of the Azadi Tower Complex

Almost everywhere the world knows Tehran city by its iconic landmark, Azadi Tower. The building’s ground, which forms the Freedom Square, is an oval-shaped area of 68,000 square meters. The tower’s surroundings include multiple fountains, which give the area beautiful scenes.

Azadi Tower

The construction of Tehran ‘s Azadi Tower began in 1969 with the aim of becoming a symbol of modern Iran. The opening of this tower in 1971 was part of the 2,500-year celebrations of the Iranian kingdom, and for this reason, this tower was initially named Shahyad, meaning the memorial monument of the Shah. The main arch in the middle of the tower and the lower arches are reminiscent of the Sassanid palaces and Zoroastrian fire temples .The upper broken arch of the tower can be considered inspired by the architectural style of the post-Islamic period. Even in the style of the early days of Islam, the two arches of the tower are modeled after the domes of mosques. The vertical openings on the top of the Azadi Tower that do the work of air conditioning are very similar to the wind towers of Yazd old town. The exterior of the tower is made of a combination of two arches, the main arch in the middle of the tower is inspired by the Ctesiphon arch of Sasanian Empire and the upper arch is influenced by Iranian Islamic architecture from the Safavid Empire era. The turquoise blue color of the grooves and the arches between the two arches are reminiscent of the architecture of this period.

This effect can also be seen in the design of the oval area of Azadi Square; For example, the motifs and gardens of the square and the shape of their juxtaposition evoke the interior of the dome of Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in Isfahan , and the water features and fountains are similar to the gardens of Shiraz. A Gateway to Modernity

The construction of Azadi Tower started in 1969 and lasted for 28 months. Finally, it was inaugurated in 1971, with the presence of more than 3,000 domestic and foreign guests. At the beginning of the opening ceremony, the 2,500 year old charter of Cyrus the Great was unveiled. By doing this, they intended to show that day as a turning point and a link between ancient Iran and future developments in the country.

This tower was originally called Shahyad Tower , meaning the memorial monument of the Shah. After the revolution of 1979, because of the important role this square had in protest gatherings, it was called Azadi tower – meaning freedom.

The inverted-Y-shaped Azadi Tower , built-in 1971 to commemorate the 2500th anniversary of the first Persian empire, is one of Tehran’s top monuments.

Designed by Hossein Amanat a 24-year-old architecture student, who won a competition to design this eye-catching structure. The monument, formerly known as the Shahyad Tower, Combine elements of both pre-and post-Islamic architecture.

Tower architecture is a combination of the Achaemenid, Sassanid, and post-Islamic architecture symbols in Iran. According to the tower’s architect, Hussein Amanat, the motifs in the square that forms flower beds were inspired by the design inside the dome of Sheikh Lotfollah Isfahan .

The tower consists of three floors with four elevators, two staircases, and 286 stairs. In the basement of the tower, there are several theaters, galleries, libraries, museums, and more. The building is 63 meters long, and 45 meters high from the ground.

Forty-six thousand pieces of cut and polished rock are said to have been used in the construction of the Azadi Tower. Azadi Sq was the scene of many protests during the 1979 revolution and remains a focal point for demonstrations today, including some huge demonstrations during the post-election crisis in 2009.

Visitors who fly domestically will catch a bird’s-eye view of this gatekeeper before landing at Tehran Mehrabad International Airport and being swept up by the maelstrom of traffic around the massive square.

By taking the stairs or elevator to the top, you can behold buzzing, modern-day Tehran. The crypt museum, on the other hand, displays various ancient cuneiform tablets, ceramics, and pottery, as well as a replica of the Cyrus Cylinder (the original of which is housed in the British Museum).

Standing guard like a sentry at the gates of Tehran, Iran, is the impressive Azadi Tower (Freedom Tower), built in 1971 and comprised of eight thousand white marble blocks. A combination of both Islamic and Sassanid architectural styles, the fifty-foot high tower commemorates the formation of the Persian Empire and is an interesting combination of both modern and ancient cultures. The tower is part of the Azadi cultural complex, located in Tehran’s 50,000-square-meter Azadi square, which is made up of a museum and several fountains. The arch rises from Azadi Square mirroring the Elburz (Alborz) mountain range just north of the city. Though not as wondrous as the snowy peaks of Mount Damavand, it is a 148 foot tall masterpiece of cut marble that marks the entrance to this historic city. The audio – video hall of the complex which has been designed based on Iran`s geographical map displays the regional characteristics of Iran in so far as cultural, life style, religious and historical monuments are concerned. A mechanical conveyer allows the visitors to visit the hall in total comfort. Some art galleries and halls have been allocated to temporary fairs and exhibitions.

Azadi Tower

One of the most significant structures of Iran, the Azadi Cultural Complex, is a perfect example of architectural artistry in Iran. Considering this structure as merely a tower would be inaccurate; It is a peculiar combination of an arch, gate, obelisk, museum, and a tower placed in a large city square. This masterpiece is one of the few contemporary examples of Iranian architecture that achieves its cultural status through the artistic representation of Iranian civilization. Moreover, it maintains symbolic significance in a diverse and rapidly evolving population. Most notably, Azadi Tower embodies the historical transition of Iran from the pre-Islamic period to the modern age.

Comparable to monuments such as the Eifel Tower or Statue of Liberty, it exhibits the national inspiration of a nation for social transcendence. Above all, it manifests the sincere aspiration of Iranians for freedom and unity, their resolve for the future along with their pride in the past.

History of Azadi Tower

After the abdication and exile of Reza Shah in 1941, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi replaced his father as Shah of Iran. He inherited a country devastated through years of colonialism and forceful occupation of allied powers during the second world war. Such a desperate condition made him a controversial ruler tasked with rebuilding a nation; An autocrat who dreamt of restoring the glory of ancient Iranian civilization in the modern era. According to historians, Azadi Tower was commissioned to represent such transformation in the capital city of Tehran.

The Extent of Symbolic Politics

Before its design, it had to act as Tehran’s western gate. Furthermore, it was to symbolize the kingdom’s aspiration for the ancient power of pre-Islamic Iran. Names such as “Gate of Cyrus” and “Imperial Gate” were proposed but abandoned in favor of Šahyād Āryāmehr (Shah Ariamehr’s Memorial). In September 1966 a competition was announced for the monument’s design.  A 24-year-old architect, Hossein Amanat, won the open competition. In 1971 Mohammad Reza Shah inaugurated the complex as an important part of a national celebration commemorating the 2,500th year of the foundation of the Imperial State of Iran.

The efforts to enrich the symbolic importance of the building went to such an extent that an inscribed golden plate weighing a kilogram was buried in the foundation of the tower. In addition, as if to saturate the inauguration ceremony with symbolic significance, Cyrus Cylinder, was also exhibited in the Shahyad Tower museum for the first time. The result was beyond satisfactory. The nation widely accepted and embraced the tower as a monument of its modern identity. At the inauguration, Mohammad Reza Shah proudly introduced the young architect to his international guest saying “This young man has designed this building”!

Islamic Revolution and Redefinition of Symbols

Despite their hatred for Shah, revolutionaries of the time could not resist the enchantment of Shahyad. Ironically, it played a major role in toppling the Pahlavi regime by providing millions of people a stage to gather in revolutionary rallies. As people saw it, Shahyad was not merely a monument to Shah; They perceived it as a monument to their heritage and their collective power. Undeniable Islamic elements of architecture along with its transformative theme went too well with the concept of the Islamic revolution.

As the revolutionary leaders saw it, a simple rebranding was enough to convert the whole complex into a revolutionary monument. Renaming the Shahyad to Azadi (Freedom) Tower, somewhat completed the evolutionary message of the original architecture. Consequently, it could now demonstrate a glorious transformation of the national power into the Islamic Republic. In other words, Azadi Tower could now symbolize a transcendence from despotism to democratic freedom.

Design and Architecture

Azadi cultural complex consists of a large square (Azadi Square), Azadi Tower, underground galleries, exhibition halls, a cinema, a library, and a museum. A proper study of the Azadi Cultural Complex, or even the Azadi Tower alone, deserves an extensive article if not a book. However, we can provide a brief introductory text to its prominent features.

With an area of 50,000 m 2 , Azadi Square is the second largest square in Iran. The largest square of Iran, Naqsh-e Jahan Square , was an inspirational model for the architect. Hossein Amanat describes his design as “… inspired by the interior design of the dome of the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in Isfahan; However, the geometry of the dome has become oval”. Similarly, The gardens and water fountains also elucidate historic Iranian gardens. The slopes of Azadi Square were designed in a way to facilitate irrigation. In addition, it helps augment the importance and height of Azadi Tower located at the epicenter.

Azadi Tower is mainly constructed of reinforced concrete over a stainless steel structure segregated into four floors. Even though proximity to the airport limited the height of the building to 46 meters, it prompts ascension through the careful use of arcs in its design. The marble ornamentation of the facade also contributes to this quality. Moreover, it gives the tower a robust and archaic impression. The interior design enjoys the same historic association through subtle imitation of the Vakil Mosque . Nevertheless,  the futuristic approach of the architect is comparable to interior scenes of a science fiction movie.

The basement of Azadi Tower consists of several interconnected galleries and other facilities. The main gallery dubbed Azadi Museum currently exhibits artifacts from Sassanids, Achaemenids, and Arcasid periods along with a wealth of Qajar jewelry transferred from Saadabad Museum. Part of the original content was displaced due to several reasons, most notably the association of the contents with the previous regime. Perhaps for the best, such replacement of objects added another controversy to the already controversial status of the building. In other words, keeping its dynamic symbolism alive.

A Brief History of Azadi Tower in Tehran

During Mehrabad’s status as Tehran’s international airport, it was Azadi Tower, the sentry to the capital city, that welcomed all visitors. A silent witness to Iran’s major historical events, this tower remains Tehran’s most iconic landmark. Read on to learn a brief history of the Azadi Tower. In 1966, 24-year-old architecture student Hossein Amanat won a competition to design a building paying tribute to the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire. The monument, formerly known as the Shahyad Tower, was completed in 1971. Combining elements of both pre- and post-Islamic architecture, the 165ft (50-meter) tall skeleton is clad in 8,000 blocks of white marble from Esfahan that are cut into various geometric patterns. It marks the west entrance to the capital city and stands on a 540,000sq ft (50,000sq meter) cultural complex known as Azadi Square , which integrates principles of the traditional Persian Garden through its immaculately landscaped lawn, pristine flowerbeds, and streaming fountains. All of these elements make Azadi Tower, or Freedom Tower as it’s also known, a favorite spot for foreign tourists eager to Instagram their arrival in Tehran .

Historically, political demonstrations have taken place against the backdrop of Azadi Tower, a solemn onlooker. These days, however, one of the only politically inspired events to take place at this site is the annual celebration of the 22nd of Bahman (February 10th), which commemorates the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. On this day, Iranians march from all parts of Tehran, eventually convening at this square.

Visitors who fly domestically will catch a bird’s-eye view of this gatekeeper before landing at Tehran Mehrabad International Airport and being swept up by the maelstrom of traffic around the massive square. By taking the stairs or elevator to the top, you can behold buzzing, modern-day Tehran. The crypt museum, on the other hand, displays various ancient cuneiform tablets, ceramics, and pottery, as well as a replica of the Cyrus Cylinder (the original of which is housed in the British Museum ). It is also a concert venue during the Fajr International Music Festival, held every year. In 2015, Tehranis flocked to see German artist Philipp Geist’s Gate of Words, in which Azadi Tower was used as the canvas for a light installation , with words of peace, love, and freedom poetically shone in Persian, English, and German to live music. This has the tower playing less of a political role nowadays and acting more like a cultural ambassador.

Day 1: Tehran

Ashura art festival to be held in Tehran’s Azadi Tower

TEHRAN- An art festival dedicated to Ashura-themed works will be inaugurated in Azadi Tower Cultural and Artistic Complex in Tehran on Thursday. 

The exhibition, featuring 56 posters and organized by the Visual Arts Department of Iran's Art Bureau of the Islamic Ideology Dissemination Organization, will showcase artistic works related to Ashura in Café Gallery, Mirror Hall, and Nations' Hall, IRNA reported on Tuesday. 

In addition, an Ashura photography exhibition, jointly organized by the Artistic Department of Tehran Municipality, will display 80 frames of Iranian mourning rituals and customs, the report added. 

The painting exhibition will feature ten masterpieces from Azadi Tower's visual arts collection, while an infographic exhibition will introduce the Martyrs of Karbala in a conceptual manner.

The opening ceremony will include theatrical performances, outdoor plays, traditional music, Ashura recitation, art workshops, mourning procession, and more.

The event aims to spread and develop Ashura culture and emphasizes artistic expression. It is one of the most important features of this event to focus on the significance and philosophy of the Ashura event.

The Ashura event is one of the most dramatic historical occurrences. It marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Imam and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), along with his 72 loyal companions.

Far right projected to finish third in French elections

A coalition of left-wing parties known as the New Popular Front was projected to come in first in legislative elections in France, capturing more seats in the National Assembly than the far-right National Rally party or the centrist Renaissance party of President Emmanuel Macron.

Projections based on preliminary results upended expectations of a clear victory for Marine Le Pen’s right-wing, anti-immigrant National Rally, which dominated the first round of voting a week ago.

Candidates across France dropped out of three-way races and called for unity against the National Rally. Now, it appears that the scramble by centrists and the left to form a “Republican front” to stymie the National Rally in the second round of voting worked.

The election was still a major blow to Macron, who lost more than a third of the seats held by his party and its allies. He is left with a deeply divided lower house of Parliament, no governing coalition immediately likely and the Paris Olympics set to open in less than three weeks. Sustained political deadlock is a distinct possibility.

The New Popular Front campaigned on raising the monthly minimum wage, lowering the legal retirement age, reintroducing a wealth tax and freezing the price of energy and gas. Instead of cutting immigration, as the National Rally vowed, the alliance said it would make the asylum process more generous and smooth.

A reformist candidate won Iran’s presidential election

In an election upset in Iran, a candidate who advocated moderate domestic policies and improved relations with the West won the presidential runoff against a hard-line rival on Saturday. The special election was called after President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash in May.

Masoud Pezeshkian, a 69-year-old cardiac surgeon, secured 16.3 million votes, about 3 million more than those received by his conservative opponent, Saeed Jalili. It was a major victory for the country’s relatively moderate reformist camp, which has been sidelined in the past few years.

The first round of voting had a record low turnout as many Iranians boycotted it in protest. But the prospect of a hard-line administration, which could have reinforced strict social rules and exacerbated economic troubles by failing to negotiate to lift international sanctions, apparently pushed voters to turn out.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, wields the most power in government. But analysts said the incoming president would set domestic policy and influence the shape of foreign policies. Here are four takeaways .

What’s next: With Pezeshkian as president, Iran may see a softening of its absolutist foreign policy and even an opportunity for a new diplomatic opening .

Brutal abductions rattled Kenya

At least 32 people have been abducted or arbitrarily detained in Kenya over the past two weeks, according to interviews with human rights monitors and dozens of activists, including five who recounted being seized. A few are still missing, lawyers said.

Several people said they were snatched by government security forces, beaten and interrogated after they spoke out against a contentious bill to raise taxes in the East African nation.
