The Overland Track

6 days – moderate to hard grade – $2750.

The classic camping based walk along Tasmania’s most iconic walking trail. With 19 years of experience, food drops to lower pack weights, glowing food and guide reviews, frequent departures and comprehensive inclusions – do it right, trek the Overland Track with us.

Walking from north to south over six days we cover the highest area of Tasmania, from the epic craggy spires of Cradle Mountain to the rainforest-clad shores of the deepest natural lake in the Southern Hemisphere, Lake St Clair. The World Heritage listed landscape is truly breathtaking and will leave you enchanted, inspired and feeling completely connected. With each day and every step, the scenery on the trail varies dramatically taking you through ancient Myrtle forest, glaciated dolerite landscapes, past plateaus covered in sparkling tarns and lakes and to Tasmania’s highest peak Mt Ossa. You will have up-close encounters with the unique and endemic animals that call this wonderful area home.

This full pack trek is suitable for first-time bushwalkers that have a good level of fitness and have done regular training. The inclusion of food drops and modern equipment will keep your pack as light as possible. Your professional guides will ensure your adventure is immensely memorable and enjoyable, providing support and care, creating delicious meals, and bringing the track to life with their local knowledge and enthusiasm for the Tasmanian wilderness.

Our January, February and March 2025 departures are our ‘Summit Series’ of hikes. On these hikes we offer the summits of Cradle Mountain, Barn Bluff, Mt Ossa and/or Mt Pelion East. All summit side trips are subject to having favourable weather conditions. If you don’t wish to do any summits and stick to the main track, or only do a few summits, you can also book on these departures. The cost for these tours are $3050.00

We also have backpacks, sleeping bags, mats and coats available to hire. All are subject to availability.

Grade: Medium - Hard

Our Itinerary

Day 1 –  ronny creek to waterfall valley – 10km – 4 to 5 hours.

After a picturesque drive from Launceston, your walk starts at Ronny Creek in Cradle Valley, then crosses a small button grass plain before rising up to the expansive views from Marion’s Lookout. From Marion’s Lookout you’ll get commanding views of the iconic Cradle Mountain (1545m) and Dove Lake. The track passes Kitchen Hut then traverses around the shoulder of Cradle Mountain through magnificent stands of Tasmanian Snow Gums. The rocky ground that you are walking on, over 700 million years ago was shaped by glaciation. The vegetation that you will see here are alpine communities of herb fields, shrubs, scoparia and Deciduous Beech trees. Now, you are walking along what’s known as the Cradle Cirque. You’ll pass the turnoff to Barn Bluff (1559m) 7km to your south before you steadily descend into Waterfall Valley and our 1st nights camp.

Day 2 –  Waterfall Valley to Lake Windermnere – 8km – 3 to 4 hours

Waterfall Valley sits below the dominant Barn Bluff. The mountains in this area are of fluted dolerite (columns formed by the rock cooling, hardening and shrinking) over millions of years. From Waterfall Valley and its amazing waterfalls the track today gently undulates across moorlands. You’ll see stands of Pencil Pines, Myrtles and Snow Gums. The moorlands are also home to many species of mammals namely wombats (whose cube shaped scats) you will commonly see on the track. You may also sometimes get a glimpse of a wombat, Tasmanian Devils and Echidnas. From the top of the Moorland, Lake Windermere can be viewed. The lakes dark colour, is caused by, oils and nutrients leaching from the button grass as tannin, and staining the water. We soon sidle around Lake Windermere to our camp, which is nestled in a light timbered forest of deciduous beech and tangle foot.

Day 3 –  Lake Windermere to Pelion Hut – 17km – 7 hours

In distance, this day is the longest of your walk. Firstly, you’ll walk through some lightly timbered forest then across some buttongrass moorlands to the Forth Gorge Lookout. At the lookout you’ll get views of mounts Oakleigh, Ossa, Pelion East and West and the Du Cane range in the distance.Small ascents and descents then lead you into the forest glade of Frog Flats. Frog Flats is a damp section of forest, home to beautifully coloured mosses and fungi. Climbing up through forest to Pelion Plains there is a short sidetrack to Old Pelion Hut (built in 1895 following the discovery of copper in the area). Cattle drovers and trappers followed the miners until the area was proclaimed a scenic reserve in 1922. From this point New Pelion Hut is soon reached. New Pelion Hut is the largest of the huts and it sits on the junction of the Overland and the Arm River Tracks.

Day 4 –  Pelion Hut to Kia Ora Hut – 9km – 4 hours

The day starts with a gradual climb up to Pelion Gap (1126m). To the east of the gap rises Mt Pelion East and to our west rises Tasmania’s highest peak, Mt Ossa (1617m). If the weather is kind you’ll have the option of climbing Mt Ossa or Mount Pelion East. Both summits have commanding views of the National Park and beyond and it is well worth the effort. [Allow 3 – 4 extra hours for these side trips]From Pelion Gap the track passes through the glaciated Pinestone Valley then onto Kia Ora Hut (New Zealand Maori word for welcome) nestled below the Du Cane Range and the dominant Cathedral Mountain.

Day 5 –  Kia Ora to Windy Ridge – 10km – 4 hours

Myrtle – beech rainforest dominates this section as you pass by Du Cane Hut (Windsor Castle). This hut was built by trapper Paddy Hartnett around 1910 as a base for his trapping. The hut is constructed out of King Billy Pine, which you’ll see commonly growing in the area. Not far from Du Cane hut we will take a side trip to D’Alton, Fergusson and Hartnett Falls on the Mersey River. The falls are quite spectacular especially after recent rainfall. From the falls junction the track climbs steadily to Du Cane Gap (1070m). Mount Geryon and The Acropolis (1471m) on the Du Cane Range are the dominant Peaks that can be viewed from here. The track then descends through Eucalypt forest to Windy Ridge Hut (the newest hut) on the Overland Track.

Day 6 –  Windy Ridge to Narcissus Hut and return to Launceston – 10km – 4 hours

The track descends down the valley to the Narcissus River through Eucalypt forest and stands of temperate rainforest. You will pass by the junction to Pine Valley, which leads walkers up to the base of the Du Cane Range and access to the Acropolis and the Labyrinth. Once you cross the suspension bridge over the Narcissus River you will shortly reach Lake St Clair and the end of your Overland Track walk, congratulations! Ferry transport then takes you across Lake St Clair to Cynthia Bay and our transport back to Launceston.

Day 1: Red Feather Inn

Day 2: launceston to mt william national park, day 3: exploring the bay of fires coastline, day 4: kayaking and enjoying the area, day 5: return to launceston, bay of fires signature walk.

These walks are overall easy in grade, but contain more moderate parts/aspects (e.g. a hill climb or long days). Suitable for basic fitness levels.

Walk rating out of five from 9,133 guest reviews.

Read what our guests have to say about Bay of Fires / East Coast .

If squeaky white-sand beaches and wild coastline appeal to you, the Bay of Fires is a spectacular reason to lace up.  Your walk begins in the small township of Hadspen, where you can get to know your fellow walkers over dinner, spending the first night of your trip in the quaint surrounds of Red Feather Inn.

The next day we begin our journey to the Mt William National Park. Starting our walk at Boulder Point, we venture four hours to Forester Camp. Nestled into the dunes, there is no roughing it, take an ocean dip and return for pinots poured and your meal underway.

Day three is all about secluded coves, hearing tales of early inhabitants and making our way to the Bay of Fires Lodge.  This is home for the next two nights – where foot spas and library time come standard and signature experiences in the outdoor bath tempt. Day four, grab a kayak paddle and glide down the Ansons River or relax into a ‘lodge day.’

We take it easy on the final day, serving up a hearty brekkie followed by a one hour walk to our forest lunch location. It’s then onward to the walker base to celebrate our shared five days.

Prices from $2,995 pp

ENQUIRE NOW

Preparing for a big walk is crucial, that is why we start our Bay of Fires Signature Walk the night before at our walker base at the quaint Red Feather Inn.

Spend the afternoon exploring the grounds, taking in the historic sandstone architecture or simply relaxing in your room with a long bath. Later on, you will meet your guides as they take you through what to expect from the next four days and conduct a gear check. After our short briefing, the night of celebration begins – Your Bay of Fires adventure is finally here! Get to know your fellow walkers over a dinner of local fare, cooked for you in-house, served in the formal dining room and paired with local wines.

We ask that guests arrive no later than 5:30pm, giving you enough time to relax and enjoy the inn before our walker briefing at 6pm.

Approximately 4 hours walking

It’s time to get your walking boots sandy. Our beach stroll this morning begins at Boulder Point in Mt William National Park. In clear conditions, the Bass Strait islands of Flinders and Cape Barren are visible to the north.

We’ll nestle into a protected beach along the coastline for lunch, enjoying the company of native birds, rare shells and marine artefacts. From day one your guides will begin unravelling the Bay of Fires tales; its early inhabitants, visiting explorers and how it came to bear its fiery name.

After about four hours walking, we’ll arrive at the Forester Beach Camp, tucked away in secluded dunes. These semi-permanent tents are our home for the night. Relax on the deck with a local wine, take a dip or explore the dune swale location while your guides prepare delicious Tasmanian fare.

Gallery image 1

Approximately 7 hours walking

Following a relaxed breakfast at the camp we walk south, absorbing the coastline’s bold colours and solitude. Along the ridgelines of sand dunes, views extend across heathlands and out to the ocean. We’ll visit marsupial lawns, often encountering quiet native animals and the tracks they leave at nightfall.

We will be crossing a tidal creek this morning so be prepared! The creek can vary from very shallow to waist deep.  Our guides will find the best route across and assist with carrying backpacks.

Our lunch spot today is a beach sheltered behind the dunes near Eddystone Point Lighthouse. We’ll have time to explore the lighthouse and its long-standing story before we trek far-stretching beaches that lead to the celebrated Bay of Fires Lodge.

Afternoon tea will be waiting, along with spa treatments for those who want to indulge. Pre-bookings are best if you’re keen to sink into the outdoor tub or settle in for a luxurious few hours at the spa.

Come evening, venture into the library, cast a line off the beach or have your hosts deliver a cold drop while you dip toes into a foot spa on the back deck. Dinner is a Tasmanian long-table affair, featuring produce from the island matched with fine local beer and wine.

Gallery image 1

Approximately 6 hours kayaking/walking

Rise early to the native birds accompanying the dawn, waking to the aroma of a hot-cooked breakfast and freshly brewed coffee. If it's a sunny morning, breakfast on the deck can reward you with whale spotting and dolphins surfing the waves. Later in the morning, kayak down Ansons River and experience the riparian ecology of this winding waterway. Cross the bird-rich waters of Ansons Bay and conclude with a stroll over the dunes of Abbotsbury Peninsula back to the lodge. After dinner is when the native wildlife wander out – keep an eye out for wombats, wallabies, Forester kangaroos, possums or even a Tasmanian devil. Don’t forget to look up! The night sky from this pristine coastline is an awesome spectacle.

Gallery image 1

Approximately 1 hour walking

Following a leisurely breakfast at the lodge, there’s plenty of time for a morning swim or final spa treatment before we depart the lodge. Unlike our other walking, today we venture through eucalypt forests and coastal heathland. We’ll enjoy a forest lunch to the sound of native birds, including the endemic green rosella.

Upon our return to Red Feather Inn there will be time to raise a glass to the four wonderful days spent together.

Getting to Tasmania is fairly simple with only two options depending on where in Australia or in the rest of the world you're coming from. Tasmania has two major airports, Hobart International Airport and Launceston airport, that facilitate services to each of Australia's states. Hobart International Airport also welcomes services from international airlines such as Etihad Airways, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, and American Airlines (among others). If you don't want to fly, you can catch the Spirit of Tasmania from Victoria (Port Melbourne) which will take you to the coastal town of Devonport (about an hour's drive from Launceston).

When is the best time to walk in Tasmania?

Tasmania enjoys fairly nice weather all year round with mild summers and cold to freezing winters that result in snow-dusted landscapes in some areas. This means that the best time to go on a walking tour in Tasmania can differ depending on what type of weather you want to experience. If you want the days to feature sparkling blue skies and warming sunshine then travelling during the months of September through to February is the way to go. If you want crisper weather and wonderland-like scenery then head to the island state from the months of March to August.

What to pack for a trip to Tasmania?

Determining what to pack for a trip to Tasmania largely depends on what time of year you're planning on going with the state experiencing mild summers and cold to freezing winters. Regardless of when you're travelling, it's wise to pack some comfortable walking shoes, a hat/beanie, sunscreen, a camera, a reusable drink bottle, and a backpack/day bag. You should also pack weather-appropriate clothing such as coats and rainproof jackets, socks, and thermal tops and pants for winter, as well as dresses, shorts, and t-shirts for summer.

What are the best walks to do in Tasmania?

Tasmania is filled to the brim with breathtaking landscapes and there is a myriad of walks to ensure you can see as much natural beauty as possible. Here are our a few of favourite trails:

Tahune Airwalk

Lake St Clair Circuit, Cradle Mountain

Dove Lake Circuit, Cradle Mountain

Wineglass Bay Lookout, Freycinet

Hartz Peak, Hartz Mountains National Park

Overland Track, Cradle Mountain

Three Capes Track

Why book our 4 Day Wild Tasmania Tour?

Flashpacker accommodation – we get it, hostels aren’t for everyone, and so the accommodation selected for our 4 Day Wild Tasmania Tour is a mix of private and shared accommodation outside of the hostel world – think bush cabins, capsule hotels and so forth. Booking options include private rooms with private or shared facilities or multi-share rooms (two to four people per room) with shared facilities.

Small group tour – when we say small group tour, we mean it! With a maximum of 13 people, you get to experience the full benefits of each destination – less crowded hiking trails, shorter wait times and more time spent enjoying what Tasmania has to offer.

Hiking based tour – we aim to do the bigger and most famous hiking trails while visiting Tasmania’s icons. Rest assured there are often easier walks available depending on your fitness level or if that’s what you prefer. We offer a range of guided and self-guided walks depending on group dynamics.

Hobart to Hobart – no need to worry about organising your own return transport.

Walking on the Overland Track | Linda Murden

Explore some of our finest wilderness destinations at your own pace as you embark on a self guided trek. It’s flexibility at its finest; you get to decide how many rest breaks you want to have, how fast you want to walk, when you want to eat, and what side trips you want to take, unlike guided tours which follow a specific itinerary where these details are often planned for you. With detailed route descriptions, transfers, logistics, fees, permits, meals and equipment organised for you, your cares and worries will be limited to how often you want to stop to take photos.

On our self guided trips you’ll find you’ll have a heightened connection to your destination, immersing your senses in the sights and sounds, all at a relaxed pace with groups that require only two people to operate. With complete freedom you’ll explore fascinating landscapes rich in history, culture and beauty.

Each of our self guided trips begin with an orientation session: your chance to ask our expert staff as many questions as you want about the route, destination, logistics and more. Once you’re off and away on your journey, you can take comfort in that the detailed maps and route notes will get you from A to B in ease. Feeling stuck? Our support staff are only a call away.

The majority of our trips are rated Introductory to Moderate. These trips involve a combination of introductory and moderate walking conditions in remote areas. Some days may see you walking a slow and steady pace for up to 6 hours in the day. Other days may be more difficult, involving early morning departures and ascents to lookouts. Guide to Visiting The MONA Museum in Hobart, Tasmania

MONA Museum, or the Museum of Old and New Art, has been billed as the place that revitalized Hobart and put it high up on the must-see destination list of Tasmania in Australia.

It is the largest privately funded museum in Australia and I’ve been keen for years to see what all the fuss is about. It’s not only a place for art lovers, but it’s a space for entertainment.

The founder David Walsh has described the museum as a “subversive adult Disneyland.” This might be why it’s considered one of the best things to do in Hobart .

I was more interested in the winery and off site brewery attached and the photos of people lazing around on bean bags with beautiful river views that I always see of MONA.

If you’re thinking of visiting MONA but not sure what it’s all about, here is an overview of our experience…

About Mona Museum

  • Cost: $35 per adult. Under 18 tourists and concessions $10. Under 12s enter for free.
  • Getting There: The MR-1 Fast Ferry takes 30 minutes from Hobart and costs from $20. For other options click here.
  • Opening Hours: Open 5 days a week from 10am–5pm. Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They are closed Wednesday and Tuesdays. For holiday periods click here .
  • Website: For full details on your visit to MONA visit the MONA website.

The Mona Museum is not just a public art museum. MONA frequently showcases large-scale art and performance events.

It was founded by art collector David Walsh, who built the museum on the banks of the River Derwent, on the Berriedale Peninsula in Hobart.

The museum is accessible via ferry which is just as arty as David Walsh’s collection inside. You can sail in the “Posh Pit” which is a private deck with a wine bar and canapes.

The MONA site also sits on the Moorilla Estate, a huge winery that you can also visit as part of your trip to MONA.

There are also two restaurants and bars, a gift shop, and cafes, as well as luxury accommodation pavilions where guests can stay.

The architecture is impressive. It contrasts against the landscape with its hard, angular, and industrial-looking facade. It has a podium, a grassy lawn area, and a garden with native plants. There’s also a tennis court.

In the summer, they host two festivals; the summer festival in January, Mona Foma, which has a mix of music and art. In June, there is the Dark Mofo winter festival, which showcases centuries-old winter solstice rituals. It celebrates darkness through art, music, food, and film.

You can get a guided tour of MONA from Hobart which includes your entrance ticket, ferry ride and a knowledgable guide.

Our Experience Visiting MONA

Our trip to MONA started on the ferry, which is an experience in itself. You can reach MONA by road, but we felt a trip up the Derwent River would make the experience all that more special.

The weather wasn’t helping out so much, but the sheep seats did. Kalyra and Savannah were instantly put into the right joyful mood to enter an art gallery with.

We pulled up to the dock and got an inkling of the architectural grandeur of the building carved into the cliff face.

Inside the museum entrance is a spiral staircase that leads down to three larger levels of display spaces built into the side of the cliffs.

It made the experience inside the gallery that more special, walking down into the cavernous depths to be confronted by graphic images, ones that caused you to dig a little deeper into your thought recesses, and those that were a little more playful.

The MONA museum is not just about standing there and staring at a painting on the wall, hoping to get a chance to read what it’s about or figure it out yourself. You’re a part of the experience as you move through.

I’m not one for art galleries or museums so wasn’t sure that it would wow me.

You’re given an O – which is an iPod device. It helps you discover what each of the artworks is with some thoughts from the founder David Walsh and sometimes the artist’s voices themselves.

There were exhibitions such as the pulse, which gives you the chance to have a light bulb measure your pulse.

Or a trampoline you can jump on to create music with the bells hanging below.

These were the first exhibits we saw and the girls were hooked. So was I.

It’s by far the best, most interesting, and fun art gallery I’ve ever been to.

It was made even more special that the girls enjoyed doing it as well. The only complaint that was heard was when we had finished. Kalyra whined that she wanted to go back in and see more.

Even though the art and the concepts were above her head, I loved the exposure the trip to MONA gave her to art and the idea that the world can be interpreted in many different and fun ways, and from that perspective, you can create pieces of work that people from around the world flock to in their thousands to see.

My favourite exhibits were the weather instrument – a machine that was powered by the wind, which moved a pencil that created a drawing – an artwork by the wind. I LOVED it!

I also loved the concept of the fat car – an obese Porsche showing the effects of consumerism.

There was also a mummy room called the Pharos Wing, which featured underground galleries and some large-scale artworks by James Turrell which has a light show at sunrise and sunset.

In 2017, a tunnel called Siloam, was built connecting to the Pharos Wing and cost $18 million to make. Here you can see the work of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who was famously convicted and jailed for the art he made.

It also has The Divine Comedy by Alfredo Jaar, which takes visitors on a journey through the three chambers of the afterlife (paradise, purgatory, and heaven).

But the artwork is not restricted to the inside, there’s some outdoor art too. There’s the Charles Ross’ magical Spectrum Chamber where the children can jump on the trampoline and see rainbow colors.

The most fun one was the white cubed room. Inside were 30 TV screens, with Madonna’s biggest fans singing the entire Immaculate Conception album in acapella. It was fun to watch and I almost jumped up and belted out the words to Borderline with them.

The only one I did not like was the human excrement machine, Cloaca Professional by Wim Delvoye. I think we arrived when it was pooping time and the smell drove me out before I could take a good look.

MONA sure is designed to open your mind – it’s a good place to learn about “It’s not better or worse, just different.”

You can do cellar tours of Moorilla Winery, but we opted for a Moo Brew Beer and a glass of wine from the Bogan Bar.

Which was very fitting for me, as I did wear my UGG boots to MONA. True bogan form, at 15 degrees and high winds, I was freezing. And I’m more about comfort than fashion.

If you like wine and art, you will love this tour you can book through Get Your Guide. The Moorilla’s Wine Meets Mona Art Day Tour includes wine tasting at Moorilla Estate, lunch at the Source Restaurant and explore Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art. See rates and availability here or below

Final Thoughts on Visiting MONA in Hobart

MONA gets the big thumbs up from us, despite our apathetic art appreciation. Put it on your Australia list for sure.

BUT, when you do come down here to visit Mona, make sure you tack on a couple of extra weeks to see some other things to do in Tasmania.

This country is SOOOOO great and has so much to offer.

There is so much to take in at Mona, you need at least half a day. We enjoyed lunch in the cafe with views out to the river, before walking to the winery area out the back.

In the summer, there is usually some live music happening outside. There was a big gospel choir event on.

While that is not my thing, it was great to sit on the grass and do some lawn-lounging, while the girls played and danced to some upbeat music.

I can only imagine how great a venue it would be when the MOFO festival takes place in January.

Where to stay in Hobart

  • YHA Hostel  – smack bang in the centre of Hobart with an easy walk to everything in the city and waterfront, the YHA is your  best   budget  option. Clean, comfortable and with a variety of room options. We stayed there in a family room with private ensuite and were very comfortable.
  • Salamanca Inn  – excellent mid-level accommodation in a perfect location. Stumble 50m to Salamanca Place and enjoy the markets and everything on offer and walk to the best Hobart has to offer. This all-suite hotel with self-contained apartments was great for us as a family. You can read our review here
  • Crowne Plaza Hobart, a 4-Star IHG Hotel. Guests love it for room, the location with a short stroll to the Pier and Salamanca Restaurants and markets, fantastic views from the floor to ceiling windows, and great breakfast.

Tasmania is offering a range of “odd” jobs to visitors this winter in a bid to boost their winter tourism.

The jobs on offer include ten unique vacancies, including an oyster organiser, paranormal investigator, a stargazer, and a wombat walker.

The Australian island is promising visitors an escape from their mundane life for unforgettable experiences and all-expenses-paid trips.

“Whether you’re craving creative stimulation or outdoor exhilaration – the company of animals, artisans, or absolutely no one – there’s an Odd Job for that,” Tourism Tasmania said.

While the positions are unpaid, successful applicants will have all their travel, food and hotels covered by the Tasmanian tourist board.

“As temperatures drop during winter, we know Australians are seeking a well-being boost and a break from the daily grind,” Lindene Cleary, the authority’s chief marketing officer told local media.

The jobs, only open to Australian citizens, offer one day of experience but there’s an eligibility criterion to be met and duties one would have to complete.

The job description for wombat walker says you will “help maintain the physical and mental wellbeing of our wombats ” by taking them on daily morning walks. The employees will “coax them out of bed to get them moving” and “keep them motivated with encouragement and snacks”.

To be eligible, the tourist would have to be an “animal and nature lover, a keen walker and a patient soul”.

A paranormal investigator will get to use the “latest ghost-hunting equipment” to pick up on paranormal activity at Willow Court, Australia ’s oldest continually run asylum.

“You’ll enter the maximum security ward for the criminally insane and tune into the signs of paranormal activity,” the description says.

For this, the tourism board wants someone with a “magnetic personality” and a “sixth sense”.

Someone with a “flexibility to wiggle yourself in and out of our waterproof waders” can become an oyster organiser and gather, sort, and clean shellfish.

For tourists worried about the cold, Tourism Tasmania says there’s a vacancy for a “sauna stoker” that involves tending to the wood-fired sauna at a glamping site overlooking the Tasman Sea.

There are also jobs for truffle hunters and “wine whisperers”. Tourism Tasmania is looking to boost its tourism numbers with these jobs, as they aim to bring it back to pre-pandemic levels.

Some 1.25 million people visited the island last year, versus the 1.35 million visitors in 2019, before the pandemic.
