Fortunately, without having to board a plane, you can experience a safari much closer to home by visiting one of the fantastic safari parks that exist right here in the UK.

We’ve often been asked, Knowsley Safari Park or West Midland Safari Park , which is better? We decided to compare them for you in an article.

Firstly, let’s take a look at Knowsley Safari Park . Located in Merseyside, this safari park is home to over 700 animals. They have a 5-mile safari drive through, the longest in the UK, and home to everything from cheeky baboons to a magnificent lion pride. The drive takes about an hour to complete, and the best bit is you can go around as many times as you want! Knowsley also has a Foot Safari where you can explore walking trails through the Amur Tiger Trail, woodlands, animal habitats, play areas and animal displays to keep your little ones entertained all day. It’s all included in one admission price, so there’s no need for a separate ticket!

On the other hand, West Midland Safari Park is situated in Worcestershire and is home to over 165 species of exotic animals. It also boasts a drive-through safari, where visitors can see giraffes, elephants, and cheetahs. Included in the entry price, you can explore their Reptile World, Penguin Cove, Aquarium, Red Panda Retreat, Twilight Cave, take advantage of the Sea Lion Show, and so much more! For a blast from the past, wander through the Land of the Living Dinosaurs. And remember to stop by the African Village to see the incredible hippos. For the little ones, Boj’s Giggly Park is a playground of fun and excitement. Both parks also feature amusement rides for an extra cost.

How do the prices for each safari park compare?

Knowsley Safari Park is considerably cheaper than West Midland Safari Park, with a weekday entry of £12.50 and £15 for a weekend entry. On the day, West Midland Safari Park prices start from £29; however, you can pre-book online for prices starting from £19.

Which safari park offers better food and drink options?

Both parks offer various dining options for visitors. West Midland Safari Park has multiple eateries, including the Dino Diner, where you can enjoy many food options, such as pizza, pasta and traditional fish and chips. Vegan, Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. There is also Burger Co. for those who love a delicious burger. The Lost City Food Court and The Adventure Food Court offer a variety of meals and some great deals. Positioned across the park are some refreshments kiosks providing hot and cold drinks, ice creams, iced slush drinks and other fun hot food offers.

Knowsley Safari Park also offers a range of dining options. The Oasis Restaurant has a menu full of wholesome dishes such as chilli con carne, pasta bolognese with rosemary focaccia, jacket potatoes with an array of fillings and much more. Vegan and gluten-free options are available. For something lighter, the outdoor food court on the foot safari serves up lovely pizzas and loaded fries. There is also a cafe for a hot drink and a slice of cake.

West Midland Safari Park, location and parking

To get to West Midland Safari Park, head to the area between Kidderminster and Bewdley. From Birmingham, take the main Hagley Road to the Quinton Expressway and follow signs for Safari Park through Hagley and Blakedown, then on to Kidderminster and Bewdley via A456. 

If you’re travelling from the South, take the M5 North, leave at exit 6, follow A449 to Kidderminster and take A456 to Bewdley.

There is a large car park, and parking is free.

Knowsley Safari Park, location and parking

Located in Prescot, Merseyside. The safari park is just off the M57, less than 30 minutes from Liverpool, and 45 minutes from Manchester. There is a large car park with free parking.

Regarding location, both parks have good transport links and ample parking facilities. However, Knowsley Safari Park is closer to major cities such as Liverpool and Manchester.

Do I need a car to visit Knowsley Safari Park or West Midland Safari Park?

Although most people visit by car to enjoy the Safari at Knowsley Safari Park, it’s not necessary, as there are excellent transport links nearby. You can even walk to the safari park from Prescot town centre. During weekends and most days throughout school holidays and half terms, you can book the baboon bus to take you through the safari drive-through. At West Midland Safari Park, if you don’t have your own car, you can book a Guided Minibus Tour. 

Conservation at the two safari parks

West Midland Safari and Knowsley Safari Park have initiatives to protect and preserve wildlife; West Midland Safari is known for its conservation breeding programs. These programs focus on breeding endangered species to release them back into the wild. Knowsley Safari Park strongly emphasises education and raising awareness about conservation issues. With a chance to get closer to the animals than a lot of zoos, a drive-through safari park can be fun with younger kids who get tired at bigger sites, while many of the top UK safari parks have walking safaris as well, to give you chance to go at your own pace near anything from meerkats and lemurs to red pandsas.

West Midlands Safari Park

Located close to Birmingham, there’s a fun mix of drive-through safari encounters, walk-through exhibits, and fun family experiences at West Midlands Safari Park  

The safari park has over 600 animals, including 170 species from all over the world, with the likes of big cats, elephants, zebras, cheetahs, and many exotic birds, as well as white rhino in the African Plains area and African elephants in Elephant Valley.

If you’ve got your own vehicle, you can drive around the park at your own pace, but there’s also the chance to jump on a guided minibus safari, where the knowledgeable staff will entertain you with stories and facts about the park’s many animals. 

The park also has several foot safari sections offering more up-close encounters. Discover giraffes and rhinos on the African Walking Trail or adorable Red Pandas and Humboldt penguins on the all-weather Discovery Trail.

Try to time your visits to line up with the park’s many animal talks and shows so little ones can learn more about their favourite species too.

But what really makes West Midland safari park one of the UK’s best safari parks for families is its wealth of other fun exhibits and experiences for kids of all ages. 

You can step back in time and walk among woolly mammoths in the Ice Age exhibit, or encounter prehistoric creatures at the Land of the Living Dinosaurs. Older children and teens will also love the park’s Adventure Theme Park, with many thrilling animal-themed rides and rollercoasters. 

You can even turn your visit into a once-in-a-lifetime family holiday with an overnight stay at one of the luxury Safari Lodges – a lovely option if you’re planning a short break rather than a day out.

Knowsley Safari Park

You’ll find the UK’s longest safari drive at Knowsley Safari Park in Merseyside, spanning five miles across its 550 acre reserve. Along the drive, you can see many of the park’s 750 animals, including the likes of lions, zebras, and baboons, plus one of the largest ‘crashes’ of white rhinos in the country.

The expansive park means there’s plenty of space for the animals to roam freely too. One of the highlights is the baboon jungle, where these mischievous creatures often entertain visitors with their playful antics.

If you’re worried about damage to your car, drop it in the car park and jump on the Baboon Bus instead. The buses have ropes and ladders for the baboons to play on, so you’re guaranteed an exciting up-close encounter without worrying about your windscreen wipers as you visit the baboon enclosure.

Once you’ve experienced the safari drive, you can also explore Knowsley’s foot safari trails. Take a walk through the Amur Tiger Trail and come nose to nose with big cats. Or take the pathways through the enclosures and meet mischievous meerkats, giant giraffes, and amazing birds of prey.

The park also has daily animal talks and displays, several kids’ play areas, face painting, and amusement rides for younger children, making for a fantastic family day out.

Blair Drummond Safari Park & Adventure Park

It’s not just England which has one of the UK’s best safari parks. In central Scotland near the city of Stirling, Blair Drummond Safari Park is home to over 350 exotic animals from across the world.

Journey through the park’s small animal reserve in your car to see many of the usual safari park favourites, including lions, elephants, rhinos, antelope, and camels.

But it’s the foot safari that’s the real highlight of Blair Drummond. Here you’ll find many fascinating and unusual animals, including bison, wallabies, llamas, alpacas, free-roaming lemurs, and cheeky chimps – who even have their own private chimp island. 

Plus, don’t miss the adorable shaggy-coated Highland Cattle and the friendly Highland Ponies, both of which are native to the Scottish Highlands.

The Pet Farm lets kids get up close and personal with the likes of pygmy goats, sheep, and deer, while the Sea Lion displays and Bird of Prey shows are sure to keep the whole family entertained.

Beyond the wildlife, the family-friendly safari park also has free pedal boats on the central lake, an adventure play area with a giant play fort and pirate ship, amusement arcades, and a mini-funfair with dodgems and teacups. 

Port Lympne Safari Park 

Port Lympne safari park in Kent is the closest you’ll come to a real African game reserve experience in the UK, with over 900 animals across its 600 acres, Land Rover safaris led by expert rangers, amazing close-up animal encounters, and safari-lodge-style accommodation.

Unlike most other safari parks in the UK, Port Lympne doesn’t allow you to drive your own car within the animal zones. 

Instead, you can hop on the African & Asian Experience safari ride or there’s the option to pay for a small-group safari experience truck tour to see free-roaming animals in the African, Asian, and South American reserves. Some safaris even include the opportunity to hand-feed the friendly giraffes. 

The rest of the park can be explored on foot. Large enclosures house a variety of rare and endangered species, including western lowland gorillas, tigers, black rhinos, and spectacled bears, not forgetting a prehistoric treat in the Dinosaur Forest as well.

Conservation projects are at the heart of everything they do at Port Lympne. Working alongside the Aspinall Foundation, the reserve is a breeding sanctuary for many endangered species. The aim is to reintroduce the animals into their natural habitat when possible.

Port Lympne also has a range of interactive animal experiences for an additional fee, including animal encounters, keeper experiences, and feeding sessions. Some have a minimum age of 5, although you’ll need to be 7 years old or more for the majority though.

You can even opt for a full safari break by staying in one of the park’s many accommodation options. From spacious lodges with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the enclosures (Lion Lodge is hard to beat) and treehouses tucked into the canopy to cosy shepherd huts and family glamping pods, there are plenty of unique stays to choose from if you’re planning short breaks as well as day trips.

Longleat Safari Park

Set in the beautiful grounds of Longleat Estate in Wiltshire, Longleat Safari Park is one of the UK’s largest safari parks and most famous animal attractions – and the first Safari Park to open outside of Africa, back in 1966.

The 900 acre park offers a fascinating drive-through safari with many exciting animals, including lions, rhinos, elephants, giraffes, and wolves, all with special commentary to play – you’ll want to download the app in advance , with the narration by Kate Humble triggered as you get to different points.

From the first stop in the African village through to Tiger Territory, Cheetah Kingdom and Lion Country, you’ll see a whole string of different species in the different zones. Monkey Mayhem is one of the most popular zones, with its troupe of rhesus macaques renowned for their mischievous behaviour – as I know from experience, be careful of your car trim and windscreen wipers here!

Other than the drive-through safari, which you normally need around two hours for, you can also explore the large safari park by foot, train, bus, and boat. 

The narrow gauge miniature railway runs through the park’s scenic woodlands and past many of the enclosures, while the Jungle Cruise boat ride takes you out onto the large lake to see Californian sea lions and possibly even spot the resident hippos.

There are plenty of exciting animals to discover in the foot safari zones, including England’s only koalas and giant Cuban crocodiles. The Family Farmyard allows kids to meet many friendly farmyard animals, from fluffy bunnies to playful goats.  

Besides the animals, you can enjoy a tour of Longleat House, the UK’s most impressive stately home, or get lost in the country’s largest hedge maze.

There’s lots going on to keep younger visitors entertained too. Kids can let off some steam in the huge Adventure Castle play area, hang out in the Little Explorers Garden, and take a ride on the Rockin’ Rhinos. Not forgetting some special events during school holidays – it genuinely is tough to fit everything into a one-day visit!

Woburn Safari Park

One of my own personal favourites, as I got married a stone’s throw from Woburn Safari Park, we’ve visited more than once over the years with a mix of self-drive safari, a walking safari and other animal experiences to try.

Start with the road safari, heading past Bactrian camels on the Northern Plains before heading into the Savannah grasslands, with Southern White rhinos, antelopes and buffalo grazing as you go.

Then you arrive in the Kingdom of Carnivores; the eight-acre enclosure is home to Amur Tigers, North American black bears, Canadian timber wolves and African lions. Keep your car window very firmly closed in this part!

Moving through Giraffe Junction to the African Forest, there’s a chance to brave monkeys once again here too – the whole thing takes around 60-90 minutes depending how busy the safari park is, but you can repeat the circuit as often as you like.

The road safari route finishes at the Foot Safari, with red pandas and lemurs among the furry occupants, as well as Asian elephants in their meadow enclosure, plus penguins and sea lions too. There are also keeper talks throughout the day – with something every 15 minutes or so, you’ll struggle to fit it all in, so it’s worth checking out your must-sees in advance and planning your day around it.

You’ve also got various play areas here, including one for the youngest visitors, outdoor and indoor options including the Mammoth Play Ark, plus the Giraffe Trail high ropes, dragon and swan boats on the lake and the Great Woburn Railway, which takes you past the alpacas. Not forgetting the VIP animal experiences , with some options suitable for age 5+.

Go and see how its done at Knowsley!!

Went on a corporate day out here and had high expectations having been to Knowsley about 18 months ago - we decided to do the safari first. Must say was the worst 2 hours I've ever spent at the weekend! We were queuing for ages no idea who invented the stupid gate system but it was driving everyone mad and created huge queues - when you have 2 young children in the car it's not the best use of your time. Not only that bug the staff appear to have little control of the area - cars were allowed to block 2 lanes of traffic for 10 minutes and god forbid there be animals on the road. On one occasion some deer were in the road and the queue it caused was quite frankly unbelievable. We were just saying that staff should patrol the area when we saw them sitting in their 4x4 doing naff all! At the end everyone was dying to get out and in a bad mood. The rides were ok but I agree with the comments made about the staff and health and safety gone mad - also it might be an idea if the staff at the entrance smile instead of looking down right miserable! Hats off to the river rapid attendant though - he was lovely! All I cab say is go and see how it's properly done at Knowsley far more organised day out!

what a great day out me and my girlfriend had at the west midlands safari park today . So much to see and do. Where do I start weather was great . Such a great wide range,of animals lions tigers elephants giraffes and so much more we went round twice in case we missed anything . well worth buying the food at the shop to feed the deer they get so close up to the car u can even stroke them . The sealion show is also worth a visit . Really impressed with the new,lemur walkthrough brillent design .we spent a good six hours going round today .i cant wait to use,my return ticket well done wmsp for making it a great day out .

I took two of my three children here , we had an enjoyable day but i did find the price of the safari park expensive although it does include a free return visit if you wanted, me personally would prefer if they dropped the price and didnt include the free return visit ! the safari itself was great, took us about 1 hr 25 mins, does depend i suppose how quickly or slowly you drive round ! The park itself seemed well kept and clean, the wristbands were reasonably priced and the kids got to go on lots of rides as despite it being half term the queues were not too bad, i do advise to get to the safari park for opening time i.e. 10 am as then you are at the actual park with the rides by about 11.30 am so it was quiet then and got alot busier by 1 pm.

We really enjoyed the safari and seemed to be up close to most of the animals more so than longleat. There are no monkeys so the straws we drew as to whose car we were going to take and risk being vandalised was unnecessary! Had a v close encounter with a rhino! Shame that by the time we'd finished the safari the weather turned cold and wet which meant the rides were a no go. Plus they didn't seem to be as big or as many as we thought from the website. Half the food outlets were closed and the place was quite quiet but we still had fun and will be making the most of the free return.

We arrived just after 11 and went straight to the safari, it was VERY busy, the whole safari took around 2 hours, which is a very long time with two small children in the car! By the end they were bored/hungry/thirsty/needing the loo. The safari was OK, a fair amount to see, some was a bit same-ie, who knew there were so may species of deer? You can buy food for the deer and a guide book at the ticket office. The food is expensive at £3 per box, and the guide book was also £3/£4. The animals in the guide book were not in the same order as the safari. Longlete, with its CD's is probably one up here. Not 100% if the food is worth having to feed the deer : / Animal wise, after the safari, the best bits were the bats (free flying around your head) there seemed to be a lot of bats & they were very active. And the goats in the Africa part (you have to walk passed the fun fair bit to get here) Again, you can buy food @ £3 per box here, it is well worth doing. As soon as the goats see you have food, you're surrounded. The children really enjoyed this bit, I nearly lost my 5 y/o who was holding the food! The rest of the animals, sea lions, didn't look too happy, really small tank and a lot of pooh in their water. The reptiles, fairly small enclosures, again, all looking quite dirty. You can't move without there being a gift shop/stand, which can get very expensive with kids plus facepainting at £4 per face. The FUNFAIR..... wow, so expensive, wristbands for unlimited rides come in at £45 is for a family of 4, or you have to buy tickets (at £2 each) and the rides cost 1 or 2 tickets. Pretty expensive! The rides were OK, and there were no massive queues. It was a good all round family day out. My son (6) is enthralled with the guide book, which can't be a bad thing. Entertainment wise, Longlete probably is better, but WMSP is cheaper.

The drive-through safari park is as expected, with a wide variety of animals, including both 'normal' and 'white' lions and tigers, and thankfully no destructive monkeys - took us an hour and a half to drive round. The animals in the main 'amusement' area are interesting too - especially the lemurs, meerkats, and sea-lions. However the amusement park section is rather shabby with a down-at-heel feel - many old rides that have seen better days. Definetely worth getting a wristband which means all rides are free as this costs around £12, whereas individual tickets price most rides at (outrageously) £4 per person with no reduction for children. Food and drink overpriced as seems the norm with such places - staff are keen if slow sometimes. Overall worth going to, but don't expect Disney-standard rides or level of service.

The Wildlife

Watch our impressive herd of white rhino as they graze outside your lodge. Southern white rhino have two horns, with the front one larger than behind. They are strictly grazers, and will spend most of their day chewing on tasty grass.

They are the most sociable of the 5 rhino species and can live in big herds of up to 14 (mostly female and youngsters). They love wallowing and also produce a lot of sounds that guests can listen out for, from grunts, snorts, squeals, bellows and growls.

NIMBUS DISABILITY

We are proud to partner with Nimbus Disability, the operators of the Access Card scheme, to streamline the process for obtaining 'Essential Companion' Tickets (previously known as 'Carer' tickets).

We take pride in offering complimentary essential companion tickets to guests requiring additional assistance during their visit to the Safari Park. With this new approach, you no longer need to bring sensitive documents on the day. Instead, please apply online through Nimbus Disability at least 7 working days before your first visit. If you've already applied, there's no need to reapply, as all approved applications are valid for 3 years.

What is an essential companion ticket.

An Essential Companion ticket allows an additional guest to enter the park accompanying a paying guest, to assist with their visit, free of charge. An Essential Companion ticket is available for guests where support is needed that is significant, substantial and in excess of what could be reasonably expected of family/friends already accompanying the guest. The support must be due to disability-related needs.  

Following a successful application through our partner Nimbus, you can book your essential companion ticket online  here . If you have been awarded +2 or more, please book one Companion ticket online and then contact  [email protected]  to book the additional companions. You will need to provide the full name and Nimbus ID number in order to book the essential companion ticket. If you have not been awarded a +1 on your Nimbus account, you are not entitled to a free essential companion ticket and will need to pay admission for everyone.

By accepting the Essential Companion ticket, your companion accepts responsibility for providing you with support when visiting the park. This includes supporting you with any additional assistance in the event of an emergency. WMSP staff are unable to provide assistance in excess of their typical roles and general reasonable adjustments.  

Who is eligible for an essential companion ticket?

An Essential Companion ticket is available for guests where support is needed that is significant, substantial and in excess of what could be reasonably expected of family/friends already accompanying the guest. The support must be due to disability-related needs. 

Nimbus guidance for children under the age of 16; the +1 can only be considered where the needs are outside of the range of what can be expected of parental responsibility - even if this means that your child needs more support or supervision than another child of similar age. 

If eligible, a guest may be entitled to more than one (but no more than 3), essential companion tickets. The number of tickets will be allocated depending on the assessment from Nimbus and with the appropriate +1/+2/! symbol, assigned to your application/Access Card. 

Essential Companion tickets are only available when accompanying a paying guest, we will not issue a companion ticket for guests who do not pay for admission (children under 3 years old). Essential Companions must be over 12 years of age. If aged between 12-17 years, they must still be accompanying a guest over 18 years of age. 

How do I apply for an essential companion ticket?

All applications need to be submitted via the Nimbus Disability website at least 7 working days before your visit, please use the link at the top of this page to apply. Applications are free of charge for guests who only wish to register their need to visit West Midlands Safari Park.  

You will also have the option to upgrade to a full Access Card at a cost of £15. Access Cards are valid for 3 years and are widely accepted across thousands of locations across the UK and beyond, including many other amusement parks and leisure attractions who offer similar assistance. 

If you are not able to use online forms and would be unable, because of the nature of your impairment, to apply online, Nimbus will be able to assist with telephone registration on 0330 808 5108. 

The Nimbus team will aim to process your application within 7 working days, although during peak dates this may be longer. We ask, where possible, to apply with at least 7 working days’ notice. You will have the option to give your planned visit date on the application, Nimbus will take this into consideration when processing your application. 

What do I do if I already have an Access Card?

If you already have a full, valid Access Card with an essential companion awarded, you can book your Essential Companion ticket online by using the link above the FAQ’s. If you have been awarded +2 or more,  please book one online and then contact  [email protected]  to book the additional companions.

You will need to provide the full name and Nimbus ID number in order to book the essential companion ticket. If you have not been awarded a ‘+’ icon on your Nimbus account, you are not entitled to a free Essential Companion ticket and will need to pay admission for everyone. 

You will need to ensure you bring your Access Card/Nimbus account details with you for our staff to check on entry alongside all tickets. Your companion tickets will be given an ‘open’ Safari Drive time slot, so they can join with your chosen time slot for the Safari Drive. 

You will be able to show your Access Card/Companion Admission ticket again at the Wristband Office to pick up a free Essential Companion wristband, provided you have paid for a wristband for yourself, and they will be assisting you on a 1:1 basis. 

What do I do if I have an Annual Pass?

If you have an Annual Pass with us and have previously had free carers, you will need to apply for Essential Companion through Nimbus. You will be able to apply for free or you can upgrade to a full Access Card. 

If your application is successful, you will be able to visit main Reception on your next visit and provide your Nimbus account details to our team. If you have been awarded the ‘+’, they will be able to issue you with an Essential Companion annual pass, on the same tier as the guest who requires the support. 

Alternatively, if you struggle with walking to Main Reception, please email our team on [email protected], including your annual pass membership number, your Nimbus account details and a photo of the pass holder with the Nimbus account (this will be required for the team to create the companion pass as below). 

The companion pass will need to have the photo and name of the guest requiring support. The pass will only be valid when using in conjunction with the named pass holder on the Access Card and the same annual pass expiry. You will be able to book in your visits online and will not need to collect a ticket on the day from Ticket Office.

How do I book an Essential Companion Ticket?

If you have been awarded +2 or more, please book one Companion ticket online and then contact  [email protected]  to book the additional companions.

Can I apply on the day for an essential companion ticket?

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the applications and to ensure that the team at Nimbus have enough time to process all your supporting documents, you will not be able to apply with less than 24 hours’ notice. Applications are still possible in less than 7 working days, however this provides significantly less time for an application to be reviewed.   

If you are purchasing tickets on the day (with Tesco vouchers) you can still apply in advance of your visit date, with at least 7 working days notice. 

Any guest who has not applied online through Nimbus, or if they have applied but have not had a reply so have no confirmation or card details, will not be able to collect a free Essential Companion ticket. All members of your party will have to pay for their admission to enter the Park, as all guests require a valid ticket. 

Please note, our staff are unable to review or approve any supporting documentation presented on arrival other than a valid Access Card or a WMSP Nimbus approval for a visit. Any such requests will be declined, and all guests will be required to pay the full on the day admission price to enter the Park.   

I'm visiting with a group from a care home/SEN organisation, do I need to apply?

We ask for all guests who require Essential Companions to apply through Nimbus, where possible.

If you are private carer for a client, their guardian will need to apply through Nimbus in advance of your planned visit.

For groups visiting from care/residential homes, SEN organisations or similar, who are not able to apply through Nimbus (whether you’re bringing a large group, do not have access to the documents required when making an application or cannot due to GDPR), we will instead accept a dated, headed & signed letter from the manager of your organisation, to be presented along with your staff ID at the Ticket Office on arrival. The letter must state how many guests are visiting (their tickets can be prebooked online or purchased on the day) and how many Essential Companions/carers are attending with them. 

You will need to head to the Ticket Office when you arrive with the letter and your staff ID and our team will be able to issue the required number of Essential Companion tickets.

We regret that we will not accept staff ID on its own; failure to produce a headed and dated letter alongside ID will require payment for all remaining guests, no refunds will be considered.

PARK ACCESSIBILITY FAQS:

Is the park wheelchair accessible.

The natural contours of the land mean that some areas have differing gradients, however, these have been minimised where possible. The Safari Walk has a mix of surfaces including tarmac and compressed gravel. Due to the differing gradients, wheelchair users may require assistance in some areas. Some areas feature anti-slip wooden decking paths and bridges.  

The path leading to the African Walking Trail has a steep incline with a compressed gravel surface, we do not recommend this route for wheelchair or mobility scooter users. Guests with pushchairs may also find this section difficult to navigate. You can instead use the tarmacked road past Marmoset Mischief to access the African Walking Trail by keeping right, taking the 2nd exit road and up a smaller incline. This is a shared route so please keep to the side and beware of vehicles.

Can I hire a wheelchair?

We offer manual wheelchairs for hire, although currently, we do not have mobility scooters available. They can be hired online in advance by clicking here.  Please note that there is a non-refundable hire charge for a single day. Our hire prices are as follows, and unfortunately, we do not provide discounts:

• Manual Wheelchairs - £10 (Maximum weight limit: 21 stone)

We also have pushchairs available for hire with the following options:

• Single Pushchair - £8 (Maximum weight: 4 stone. Children must be able to sit up unaided. Not suitable for infants).
• Double Pushchair - £12 (Maximum weight: 7 stone combined. Children must be able to sit up unaided. Not suitable for infants). 

The collection point is Main Reception and all equipment must be returned 30 minutes before the Park closes. You will be required to sign the Hire Agreement on arrival in order to receive the hired equipment. Booking is subject to availability. 

Is there Blue Badge parking?

We have free on-site parking for all vehicles, with 41 dedicated Blue Badge spaces located adjacent to the entrance to the Safari Walk. It is a tarmac area on a decline towards the pedestrianised area. Parking bays are clearly marked, and spaces are on a first-come first-served basis. A valid  Blue Badge must be displayed in this area. 

The nearest toilets from the disabled parking bays are 100 to 200 metres up a modest incline and over the zebra crossing. 

What disabled toilets do you have on site?

Our disabled access toilets are strategically located throughout the Park, ensuring level access, lever arm taps, and handrails. Additionally, we offer adult changing facilities in the main car park area with a Changing Places approved Adult Changing Room. The room is fitted with an adjustable changing table, WC and fixed wash basin. Unfortunately, there is no shower facility. There is an XY track system and powered hoist with a Standard 2 point spreader bar – no harnesses are provided. 

This facility will require a RADAR key, keys are available from the Main Reception if required, with a driving license or £5 cash left as a returnable deposit. 

Do you have first aid assistance?

For your convenience, the First Aid post is conveniently located at the front of the Park, next to the Ticket Office and near the car park. Please be aware that our First Aid staff are unable to dispense medication.

Although the post isn't always staffed, assistance is just a phone call away using the phone located outside. Rest assured, a trained first aider is available in every area of the Park to provide immediate assistance if needed. 

Do you have concessions for blind/visually impaired guests?

We offer free admission for guests who are blind or visually impaired. You will not be able to book a ticket online, but will need to pick up a ticket from the Ticket Office on the day. You will need to bring with you a Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI) or similar (issued by your local council).  

You will also be entitled to an Essential Companion ticket, you will not need to apply in advance for this provided you are able to show your CVI for your own admission. All other guests in your party must book online in advance or pay on the day.  

To use the rides in the Adventure Theme Park, you will need to purchase a full price ride wristband and we would issue an Essential Companion wristband free of charge. You will need to show your CVI and admission ticket at the Wristband Office again.  

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Assistance dogs are welcome in pedestrianised areas, but are not permitted in certain animal habitats for safety reasons. Please ensure they are wearing an identifiable harness or jacket denoting their working status. Please note, Emotional Support Animals are not allowed access to the Park. 

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the Safari Drive for safety reasons and would constitute a breach of Zoo Licensing Regulations. Kennels are available a short walk from Main Reception. 

In all cases, the owner of the assistance dog must: 

• Only access the Safari Walk areas: Ice Age, Land of the Living Dinosaurs, Explorers’ Play Park and Theme Park.  
• Leave dogs in our purpose-built kennels, if accessing the Safari Drive. Bedding, food, bowls, any toys and a small padlock will need to be provided by the animal’s owner. A key and padlock are available from Main Reception when checking the dog in, a £5 returnable cash deposit will be required. There is a water tap available to fill up water bowls.   
• Leave dogs in our purpose-built kennels, if staying in our Safari Lodges. You must make your own adjustments to ensure their safety (such as have a companion with them) to meet their needs. We suggest, where possible, that dogs are left at home if staying overnight with us.  
• Not enter the Discovery Zone buildings (Aquarium, Creepy Crawlies, Reptile World and Twilight Cave), Penguin Cove, Sea Lion Theatre, Lorikeet Landing, Red Panda Retreat, African Village (Meerkats and Lemur Woods), African Walking Trail, Tiger Tropics, or Lion Ridge. 
• Not attend any VIP sessions, animal education talks or any other situations where the presence of the dog may distress animals or affect their behaviour. 
• Always keep the dog on a lead and under control. 
• If the assistance dog starts barking or growling, move their dog to an area where no Safari Park animals are present until the assistance dog stops vocalising. 
• Only allow the dog to urinate or defecate on the grass car park next to the owner’s vehicle before entering the park and to clean up after. 

Do you have ride queue assistance?

If a guest struggles with queues, we do have limited provision to allow queuing at the ride exit. Please speak to a staff member at the wristband office. We will only consider guests for this service who have been assessed by Nimbus Disability as having Standing/Queuing requirements, you will need to show your access card or Nimbus account details for our staff to check the access requirements on your account. 

If we are able to accommodate you at the ride exits, the supervisor will issue you with a sticker to pop on both wristbands. This will be on a 1:1 basis, on quieter days we may be able to allow the family group to go on together. Please note that there may still be an element of queuing and you may need to wait a cycle or two of the rides, the operator will load a number of guests who arrived before you onto the ride first where required. If a guest is unable to wear their wristband, their adult companion can wear it on their wrist in their stead, our team will just write a brief clothing description on the band. 

If a guest has loose articles they would like to wear on the rides, like ear defenders or a cap/hat, they must inform a member of staff at the Wristband Office, who will issue you with a sticker to denote the authorisation of the items on the ride. We cannot allow loose items on the ride unless you have been issued with this sticker. 

PLEASE NOTE:  ALL GUESTS MUST BE ABLE TO SIT UP AND HOLD ON UNAIDED ON ANY RIDE.

Watch: Six-foot tall baby giraffe born at West Midlands Safari Park

West Midlands Safari Park has welcomed the arrival of a baby giraffe, contributing to its recent "baby boom".

The male calf was born at a whopping six-foot tall to 12-year-old mum, Arusha, and dad, Rufus, in the early hours on May 29.

After a gestation period of 15 months, West Midlands Safari Park keepers were ready for the birth and prepared the giraffe house floor at the park with sand for a soft landing.

Arusha had her closest companion, Akacia, was also on hand to offer support and welcome the baby, named Mtembei – meaning 'he who roams' – into the world.

The calf is one of four new arrivals to be born at the park in just a fortnight, following the birth of two endangered barasingha fawns in May and a blesbok calf on June 1 – the first in the attraction's history.

Deputy head keeper of ungulates at the West Midlands tourist attraction , Ian Nock, said: "We certainly have been busy this fortnight. We have named the blesbok calf ‘Merlin’ and he is sticking very close to mum, Pebbles, who is proving to be an excellent first-time mother.

"The barasingha fawns can often be seen playing together which is lovely for us all to see.

"Then on the morning of May 29, the keepers and I were all extremely delighted to see that Arusha, our 12-year-old Rothschild’s giraffe, had given birth. This is her fourth calf and incredibly important for giraffe conservation."

Visitors to the park can spot Mtembei the calf in the giraffe yard on the safari as well as out and about meeting his neighbours on the Safari Drive in the next few weeks.

Ian added: " The International Union for Conservation of Nature list giraffe as ’ vulnerable’, as recent years had seen steadily declining numbers across Africa, due to poaching and habitat loss.

"But thanks to conservation breeding programmes in zoos and efforts in the wild to protect remaining populations, numbers have begun to slowly increase.

“Arusha is a very attentive mother, and both are doing perfectly. Once the calf is ready, we shall start introducing mother and calf to the rest of the herd, including dad, Rufus and brother, Kingsley. This important birth increases our herd to 11. It has definitely been something of a baby boom.”

Giraffe, barasingha and blesbok are all part of collaborative breeding programmes between European zoos, aiming to conserve endangered species.
