Diageo opens landmark global Johnnie Walker visitor experience
Today we have launched Johnnie Walker Princes Street, the eight-floor new visitor experience for the world’s best-selling Scotch whisky, in the heart of Scotland’s capital city.
Four and a half years in the making, Johnnie Walker Princes Street is the centrepiece of our £185million pound investment in Scotch whisky tourism in Scotland – the largest single investment programme of its kind ever seen in Scotch whisky tourism.
To mark the opening, a Johnnie Walker flag was raised above the landmark building by Diageo’s Chief Executive, Ivan Menezes, and the Managing Director of Johnnie Walker Princes Street, Barbara Smith.
“This is a proud day for everyone. Last year Johnnie Walker celebrated 200 years since founder John Walker opened the doors to his small grocery store and today represents the next chapter of the incredible story. Johnnie Walker Princes Street is a landmark investment in Scotch whisky and into Scotland and it sets a new standard for immersive visitor attractions. It celebrates Scotland’s remarkable heritage, our incredible skilled whisky-makers, and looks to the future by engaging new generations of consumers from around the world in the magic of Scotch whisky.” Ivan Menezes Chief Executive, Diageo
- Set over 71,500 sq ft, Johnnie Walker Princes Street takes the concept of personalisation to a scale never before seen in a global drinks visitor experience.
- On the Journey of Flavour tour visitors will have their personal flavour preferences mapped with drinks tailored to their palate.
- There are more than 800 flavour combinations available in the innovative dispensation systems meaning you could visit every day for more than two years and not have the same experience twice.
- Over 150 diverse and talented new employees, speaking 23 languages between them, have been recruited and will bring to life the 200-year story of the Johnnie Walker brand.
- Formerly a traditional department store, the building features a state-of-the-art experiential retail space where shoppers can select from rare and exclusive whiskies, fill their own bottles and have them personalised.
- Johnnie Walker Princes Street opens its doors with a Green Tourism Gold Award – the highest sustainability accolade for a visitor attraction – and on the roof terrace are planters to provide herbs for garnishes and infusions for drinks, a sedum roof covering and bird boxes to encourage biodiversity.
Johnnie Walker Princes Street is crowned by two world-class rooftop bars and a terrace with breath-taking views of the Edinburgh skyline, including the Explorers’ Bothy whisky bar stocked with 150 different whiskies, and the 1820 cocktail bar where drinks are paired with a carefully curated menu sourced from, and representing in culinary form, the four corners of Scotland.
We are committed to contributing to the local community by offering our award-winning hospitality training programme for unemployed people in our special Johnnie Walker Learning for Life academy. The building can also host events in the 200-capacity space.
“We’re thrilled to be opening the doors and helping to re-build the tourism and hospitality industry after a very difficult 18 months. The story of the world’s best-selling whisky has been brought to life with flair and imagination and we have built a team which includes some of the most talented individuals in their fields. We are now ready to welcome visitors and begin telling the next chapter of how we are woven into the fabric of Scotland’s history and communities.” Barbara Smith, Managing Director of Johnnie Walker Princes Street
“Johnnie Walker Princes Street is an exceptional addition to Edinburgh’s world-class experiences, demonstrating the confidence international brands have in the capital city whilst supporting the Scottish tourism recovery. Not only that, its exploration of the ‘four corner’ distilleries as part of the attraction will no doubt inspire customers to visit those regions, extending its tourism benefits far beyond the city’s boundaries.” Malcolm Roughead, Chief Executive of VisitScotland

What it's like to tour johnnie walker's new $200 million brand house in scotland, from arrival to exit, the princes street experience in edinburgh is a multi-sensory spectacle.
Inspiration meets innovation at Brandweek , the ultimate marketing experience. Join industry luminaries, rising talent and strategic experts in Phoenix, Arizona this September 23–26 to assess challenges, develop solutions and create new pathways for growth. Register early to save .
EDINBURGH, Scotland—To the world, Johnnie Walker is one of the great whisky brands, but in its homeland of Scotland, it is still often mistaken as being an American brand due to the long-held international focus and global growth since it was founded in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.
The Diageo-owned whisky is available in more than 180 countries, but now it has come home in a sense with the opening of its $200 million-plus brand experience, which opens on Princes Street in Edinburgh this month.
To quote the owner’s chief marketing officer Cristina Diezhandino as she visits the eight-floor venue that overlooks the city’s castle for the first time: “This is not a museum.” In fact, it is a highly detailed, digitally driven brand home like no other.
The initial visitor experience
With lessons learned from decades of success at the Guinness Factory in Dublin, Diageo aims to make the Johnnie Walker experience a tourism attraction for Scotland, while supporting the local community through exclusive training to bar workers and focusing on sourcing local suppliers as much as possible. In tough times, this huge project had been a welcome development for the country, keeping many in work throughout its two-year build.
Johnnie Walker’s Transformative ‘Jane Walker’ Campaign Will Support Gender Equality
The focal point of the experience externally is the brightly lit store on the ground floor of the building offering exclusive whiskies and taste tests as well as branded apparel and personalized bottle engravings which the general public can explore and take up. This in itself is a journey through decades of malts, however, it’s the tours around the rest of the building that are bound to attract fans looking to explore the history of the Johnnie Walker brand alongside the ingredients and innovation being introduced.
The tour begins in a side door next to the shop, where the brand immediately begins to learn each visitor’s taste preference through an app that helps place you into one of six categories on its flavor wheel—a multi-colored flywheel that helps each person understand the best whisky and ingredients for them including being “creamy,” “spicy” or “fruity.”
This wheel is significant throughout the main tour, with a wrist band with the designated color being distributed once the initial survey is completed. (I chose “creamy,” meaning a light brown wrist band was placed on my wrist.) This will be important when being able to taste three cocktails during the tour made up with Johnnie Walker variants such as Black Label, Red Label and Green Label, depending on the outcome of the taste test.
Of the five available tours, one is for the more discerning whisky drinker at a cost of £95 and begins in the Whisky Maker’s Cellar where the visitor can see the casks that are being stored on site.
Special blends are being matured in the dark, quiet surroundings—inspired by the company’s original warehouse. Once these reach 26 years of age, they will be bottled and sold exclusively in the Princes Street store to drive connoisseurs to visit, knowing that they can only acquire these whiskies in Edinburgh. They’ll also be able to taste directly from the cask and hear of the special blending system while talking to some of the 11 makers who are based at the location.
The main experience
The main tour, which costs $35 per ticket (or 25 pounds), really comes to life as you enter the performance theater—a narrow, dark room with a long stage on one side and a row of seats against the wall facing it. It is surrounded by digital screens that initially act as portraits of the Walker family, and this is where the tour is met by a performer who spends the next 10 minutes interacting with the main digital screen behind and with props that appear along the stage.
These are used to evoke the story of how Johnnie Walker became the global whisky leader through the actions of the founder, his son, and his grandsons.
The effect is a tour de force of production, arguably the early highlight overall, choreographed with a floor that keeps moving, meaning the storyteller needs to be note-perfect with their timing immaculate as they interact with the environment. What appears on screen is high-quality animation that relays the history from the opening of the first store in 1820 through to the modern-day, accompanied by specially composed music that also features across the different rooms.
Advertising aficionados among the visitors might be reminded of one of the brand’s most celebrated ads, “The Man Who Walked Around the World” featuring Robert Carlyle.
The “Journey of Flavor” continues throughout the tour.
In one room, the visitor is guided to use Sodastream-like machines created especially for the venue, selecting a color-based glass cup that matches their wristband, which features a chip that when place on the machine pours the appropriate whisky (onto the prescribed four blocks of ice) before the person adds the extra ingredients to create their ideal Johnnie Walker cocktail. It’s a simple but fascinating process.
This is followed by two rooms in which the production values are once again on display.
One room features four tables to emulate the “Four Corners” of Scotland where some of the brand’s distilleries are based to produce four of its malts including Glencinie and Caedhu, and it features jars containing the ingredients that make each. The ceiling of the room features a metallic 3D map of Scotland with thistles and grass growing over it. Around the LCD-enabled walls are placed symbols of the distilling process, assisted by an animation walking through each stage.
The next room is all about lighting and mood with a circular digital table showcasing the differences in the Johnnie Walker label flavors while emotive music plays throughout as the many bottles placed within holes in the surrounding walls are illuminated individually when in focus by the tour guide. It’s another highly memorable feature of the experience—and it’s when the amount of information being revealed really has an impact. It’s clear the tour has been designed for everyone from the whisky novice to the enthusiast.
Further tasting experiences are on offer in bars on the fourth floor where two more cocktails are made within the visitor’s category too. Three premium whiskies for the entry fee alone start to make the tour seem more of a bargain over its 80 minutes.
This has been purposefully created with the idea of creating life in the cultural arena in Edinburgh. —Cristina Diezhandino, CMO of Diageo
Predictably, one image that is everywhere is that of “the Striding Man,” which the tour incorporates wherever it can, from the stage performance through to the tour guide acquiring a walking stick halfway through, not to mention statues, wall designs and even the exit signs.
What else is in store?
As you would expect, some of the brand’s marketing from around the world is on display within the archive on the third floor, where specially selected Johnnie Walker artifacts are on display, including a bottle of whisky with a snake pickled inside that provokes many questions that remain unanswered.
The second floor also features the small Showcase Cinema room for visitors to see historic footage of factory workers packing bottles by hand alongside adverts from over the years too.
The top floor, however, is where a lot of the real work has focused. Visitors will find two rooftop bars, one with a terrace that offers a cityscape view directly across from the castle. It’s set to prove a popular venue for events and corporate hospitality, or at least that’s the aim. Even on an overcast day such as the one I experienced, there’s no denying it’s one of the best views in Edinburgh now.
And of course, like any thorough tour, it exits through the gift shop.
There, Diageo whiskies from around the world (categorized again via the personalized flavors) can be tasted and bought. There are also branded T-shirts, caps and, appropriate for Scottish weather, raincoats on sale too. Members of the public can also taste test within the store—making it an interactive destination of its own for anyone not looking to take the tour.
The data drive for Diageo
This is a tour that is data-led, and it proves to be a lesson in customer relations management, from gaining personal details at the start through to then selling the brand and its produce while cultivating fandom. Visitors can taste and learn before being given with the ability to buy exclusive products in store, while also feeling more confident in their knowledge of whisky.
It doesn’t end at the exit door, though, as follow-up emails inform the guests of new innovations dedicated to their own tastes. This will likely prove a powerful marketing tool considering the love whisky drinkers already feel for a great malt.
Talking to Adweek about the vision of creating the space, Diageo CMO Diezhandino describes it as a place that aims to be “really special,” with a retail space that is open to the public but can become a part of the community too.
“This has been purposefully created with the idea of creating life in the cultural arena in Edinburgh,” she continues, outlining the potential for plays to be held, artists to showcase their work and the ability to make it a “meaningful” venue to the city and the whisky industry.
“What will happen here is that it is a center for events and connections and somewhere to make new discoveries of new liquids and new cocktails. I can imagine this being a place where all of this is happening for the world to see.”
In Johnnie Walker Princes Street, Diageo has created a world-class venue of marketing and retail innovation, of theater, and of experience. Most importantly, it’s a location that will turn fans into die-hard loyalists and expand Johnnie Walker’s reach to new drinkers from around the world.

Review: Johnnie Walker Journey of Flavour Whisky Tour in Edinburgh
As you probably already know (or might assume), whisky is the national drink of Scotland so whether you are exploring the Highlands, Glasgow , or Edinburgh you will have ample opportunities to try some locally distilled whisky and check it off of your UK bucket list !
And yes, for those of you wondering, the spelling of whisky without the e is correct for whisky that is distilled in Ireland, Scotland, and Japan. Only Irish whisky is different in the sense of how the beverage is created because it goes through a triple distilling process before it is aged.
In central Edinburgh, you will find several different whisky tours that you can join but my fiance and I chose to book the Johnnie Walker Journey of Flavour Tour so that is what I will be reviewing today! You can expect to find out everything you need to know before booking including the cost, tour duration, tour experience, and what type of person would best enjoy this tour!
Personally for us, this tour was one of our top highlights during our 3 days in Edinburgh ! So let’s get into the review!
Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links. This means that, at zero cost to you, I will earn an affiliate commission if you click through the link and finalize a purchase.
Who is Johnnie Walker?
I don’t want to spoil your tour experience so in short, Johnnie Walker came from a humble beginning running a modest grocery store in Edinburgh. It was his curiosity and passion for flavors that eventually led to him creating a whisky so well-loved that it led to it becoming the internationally sold brand that it is today.
Where is the Johnnie Walker Journey of Flavour Tour Located?
You can easily find the 8-story Johnnie Walker building at 145 Princes Street in central Edinburgh. This location is one of the busiest areas in all of Edinburgh so you won’t miss finding it even if you tried!
How long does the Journey of Flavour Tour Cost?
This particular tour is a really great price at just 30 GBR per adult! Nowadays, a tour of this quality is hard to find for such a low price. This was definitely one of the biggest selling points for us when were deciding on which whisky tour to go with.
Besides the Journey of Flavor Tour , there are also several other types of whisky tours and tastings offered at Johnnie Walker that range in price from 18 to 95 GBP.
How Long Does the Tour Last For?
From start to finish the tour runs for around 90 minutes. Right as the tour came to an end I felt like the tour had almost gone for longer than 90 minutes (in a good way). I think this is because there was so much information being shared and we were taken to many different rooms that had sensory experiences, visuals, and tastings.
Nothing felt rushed or boring and we were never in one place longer than we needed to be except at the end when we got to relax and sip on our final cocktails. This kept both of us completely immersed in what was happening to where we didn’t even think about how long we had been there. I was enjoying the tour so much that I wanted it to keep going!
Who is the Johnnie Walker Journey of Flavour Tour For?
Ideally, this tour is best suited for those who already love Johnnie Walker whisky or want to try it and learn about the history of the brand. It’s also an awesome choice for the person who can’t stand drinking whisky plain (me!). The featured drink on this tour is a Whisky Highball which will be uniquely created for you based on the results of your flavor quiz.
If you are strictly a whisky neat or on the rocks type of person this tour would not be the best choice for you because the featured drink of the tour is a whisky highball cocktail. However, out of the 3 drinks included in the tour, your final two offered at the bar can be straight Johnnie Walker. This is a nice compromise if you happen to be going with someone else who doesn’t enjoy whisky on its own.
What is the Journey of Flavor Experience Like?
Flavor quiz.
Before you arrive in person for the tour your confirmation email will tell you to fill out your flavor profile quiz which will be used during a portion of the tour for your drinks. If you forget to fill this questionnaire out you can also do this in person, just be sure to arrive 15 minutes before your tour is scheduled to begin. I ended up getting the result of green which represented fresh flavors.
History of Johnnie Walker
Our tour started off with us meeting our guide and being led to the first room where she told us the story of Johnnie Walker with various costumes. The stage had moving elements and visuals that really enhanced her storytelling and acting (even though she was very enthusiastic!). This lasted around 15 minutes or so but it was packed with so much information that I really felt connected to Johnnie Walker’s life once it finished.
Whisky Exploration + Tastings
The next room is where our group learned about the different whisky styles, flavors, and production processes. The lights and animations were really captivating and well done here! Again, the way the information was presented made it super easy to follow along without getting bored.
From here it was time for our first drink! In the drink creation room, each one of us was instructed to find the matching colored glass to our wristbands from our flavor quiz that we got at the beginning of our tour.
By simply placing my colored glass underneath the cocktail machines it knew how to create the highball flavor that was best suited for me! It was really cool to watch it work.
The table had compartments with lots of different garnishes and there was a card I could look at to grab the garnishes that matched my highball flavor. This was super fun!
The final segment of the information part of the tour landed us in yet another room with amazing multimedia! Here the focus was on how whiskies can take on different flavors depending on the ingredients used, which regions the ingredients are from, and why this matters.
There was a unique sensory element here where were able to smell the different flavor profiles that make up the different Johnnie Walker whiskies.
Final two drinks at the bar
At this point, the informational part of the tour was over and, it was time to enjoy our last two drinks from a skilled bartender who was waiting for us!
We no longer had to follow the drink recommendation that matched our bracelet and could try any of the cocktails from the rest of the menu, request an off-menu whisky-based cocktail, or keep it simple and get a whisky neat or on the rocks. This is when I realized that the inclusions of the tour had exceeded the booking cost.
Before leaving, our group was invited to check out the gift shop where we could shop all of the Johnnie Walker whisky varieties, merchandise, and souvenirs.
My fiance ended up buying the limited edition Fall Harvest blend that could only be purchased in person from the Johnnie Walker store! In doing so he got to sign his name down in the official Johnnie Walker history books!
Is the Johnnie Walker Journey of Flavour Tour Worth it?
If you are loyal to Johnnie Walker or are looking for an affordable whisky tour in Edinburgh then yes, the Journey of Flavour Tour is worth booking!
I would also highly recommend this tour for those who are new to whisky because the highball cocktails are a great way to ease your way into whisky!
The value of money on this tour is hard to beat at just 30 GBP for a 90-minute complete sensory experience! Plus, getting to the Johnnie Walker building is super easy no matter where you are staying in Edinburgh.
If you are ready to book your tour experience you can easily do so online in advance here !

We’ve enjoyed a wonderful 14 months on Princes Street welcoming over 345,000 guests from 112 countries since we opened our doors, and we’re delighted to have our efforts recognised by VisitScotland’s internationally renowned Quality Assurance Scheme. From our ground floor retail store to our rooftop bars, we’ve got an incredible team of people ensuring our guests have the best possible experience with us day in and day out, and being recognised by this scheme is further proof of the excellent work that they do. Congratulations to the team on another amazing achievement. Barbara Smith, Managing Director of Johnnie Walker Princes Street
This is a fantastic achievement and a real reflection of the excellent visitor experience that the team at Johnnie Walker Princes Street are providing. Our Quality Assurance Scheme helps us drive up standards across the industry, effectively setting expectations and providing reassurance for visitors to Scotland. Our stars represent world class excellence – helping businesses demonstrate they care about quality and enabling visitors to make informed choices. Rob Dickson, VisitScotland Director of Industry and Destination Development

Cardhu Distillery Reopened As Speyside Home of Johnnie Walker
- by Gary Carter
- June 24, 2021
Spirits giant Diageo put another feather in its whisky tourism cap with the opening of the “reimagined” Cardhu Distillery in Speyside, Scotland. It is seen by the company as the Speyside Home of Johnnie Walker.
The Johnnie Walker Princes Street whisky experience in Edinburgh – the centerpiece attraction in the company’s whisky tourism in Scotland – will launch later this summer as well.
Now, flying over the Cardhu distillery once again, is the distinctive flag used by Helen Cumming of Cardhu’s founding family, one of whisky’s most famous female pioneers, (she waved it to warn illicit distillers of the approaching ‘excise man’ in the 1800s).
This makeover of the Cardhu distillery is the latest update in a journey across what’s described as the Johnnie Walker ‘four corners’ distilleries of Glenkinchie in the Lowlands and the Highland distillery of Clynelish , which opened their doors to the public after being transformed into whisky tourism destinations.
The new visitor experience at Cardhu celebrates the distillery’s 200-year history and legacy as a pivotal part of the Johnnie Walker story. It was sold by the Cummings’ family to Johnnie Walker and Sons in 1893 and became integral to the Johnnie Walker success over the coming decades.
The state-of-the-art space includes a redesigned, immersive story-telling experience with a projection story room, whisky tasting kitchen and updated whisky experience tours.
Cristina Diezhandino, Diageo’s chief marketing officer, said in a prepared statement , “We are delighted to be raising the flag at Cardhu to mark the opening of the new visitor experience just as our distilling pioneer Helen Cumming did two centuries ago. When Helen raised her flag, it was to warn her neighbors and the local community, but today we raise the flag in a symbol of confidence and ambition for the future of Scotch whisky and tourism in Speyside and throughout Scotland.”
She added that Cardhu is a special whisky, a special distillery with a special history and heritage, “and the investment we have made creates an exciting and engaging experience that will surprise and delight visitors whether they are local staycationers in the UK or tourists from around the globe when they are able to travel.”

Cardhu is the third of the ‘Four Corner’ Johnnie Walker distillery experiences, which are single malt distilleries that represent Scotland’s four whisky making regions and contribute to the Scotch whisky brand.
Following on from the launch of Johnnie Walker Princes Street later this summer, Caol Ila Distillery on Islay will be next to reopen in 2022 after its own reimagining, to complete the ‘four corners’ story.
Most recently, the iconic “ghost” distillery of Brora was also reawakened after 38 years and is producing whisky once again as part of a significant Diageo investment in its Scotch whisky distilleries.
Cardhu Distillery will initially welcome UK visitors in accordance with the latest safety guidelines and look to host international tourists when it is deemed safe to travel by the Scottish government.

Jelly Belly Factory Tour Expands with a New Museum
Grand opening will take place july 1.
FAIRFIELD, CALIF., June 20, 2022 – The Jelly Belly Factory Tour just got a little sweeter with the addition of the Jelly Belly Museum.
The Jelly Belly Museum’s grand opening celebration will take place Friday, July 1 at the Jelly Belly Visitor Center in Fairfield, California. To celebrate the grand opening on July 1, the factory tour and museum experience will be free to all guests from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The first 300 guests will also receive a free 2 pound bag of Jelly Belly Belly Flops® jelly beans.
The museum experience begins with a short ride in a Jelly Belly Express passenger train (weather permitting) from the Jelly Belly Visitor Center to the museum entrance. With decorative jelly beans hanging from the ceiling, this museum presents the evolution of candy-making equipment and the growth of the family-owned Jelly Belly Candy Company through a whimsical and interactive experience. Guests will get to view over a century’s worth of candy-making equipment that is brought to life through videos accessed via QR code and narrated by Herm Rowland, Chairman of the Board at Jelly Belly Candy Company.
“The Jelly Belly Factory Tour allows guests to see how candy is made today, but we felt it was important to show the history that led to our current factory processes through a museum, too,” said John Jamison, VP of Retail Operations at Jelly Belly Candy Company. “The Jelly Belly Museum is a truly unique experience and we were so grateful to have the opportunity to share Herm’s unrivaled knowledge of candy-making with everyone.”
Several vehicles and installations from Mr. Rowland’s private collection are on display in the museum and represent key moments in the company’s history. Guests will see a 1934 Ford V8 Touring Sedan, a 1935 Chris-Craft boat and a 1982 Maserati Quattroporte.
The Jelly Belly Museum concludes with an area of photo opportunities. Guests will be able to take a photo in front of dancing jelly beans, in a candy-themed spinning drum, and on the Jelly Belly Bean Machine, a motorcycle with a sidecar in the shape of a jelly bean. When guests are done walking the museum, they will have the opportunity to ride aboard the Jelly Belly passenger train back to the Visitor Center.
The Jelly Belly Museum and Factory Tour are open daily to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are priced at $7 per adult and $3 per child for the factory tour and museum and parking is free during business hours.
Famous for offering public tours, the Jelly Belly Factory Tour has received many awards for excellence over the years. Located halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento, Jelly Belly has welcomed more than eight million visitors since opening its factory doors to the public for tours in the mid-1980s. The Jelly Belly Visitor Center is also home to a large Jelly Belly retail store, Chocolate and Fudge Shoppe, Jelly Belly Café, and the Chocolate & Wine Experience.
With candy-making roots dating back to 1869, Jelly Belly Candy Company began making Jelly Belly® jelly beans in 1976. Today, Jelly Belly products are sold all over the world and the company remains family-owned and operated by the fourth, fifth and sixth generations of the candy-making family.
