If you enter Italy from a country outside the Schengen Area, the uniform Schengen stamp , which is affixed to your passport during border control, replaces the Declaration of Presence. From 2025 , citizens of eligible countries need to apply for the ETIAS Italy before travelling to the country. The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) will be introduced by the European Union for all Schengen area member countries.

The ETIAS requirements for Italy will require previously visa-exempt citizens to complete an online ETIAS Italy application prior to their trip .

Eligible travellers can obtain their ETIAS Italy by providing personal and passport details and answering a series of security questions. ETIAS will allow for improved border control within the Schengen Area.

US citizens are currently exempt from obtaining a visa to Italy . All American travellers who wish to visit Italy in the future will be required to apply for the travel authorisation and meet the ETIAS Italy requirements.

Among the ETIAS Italy requirements for US citizens , applicants must have:

• A valid passport
• A debit or credit card
• An email address

The ETIAS Italy application form will only take a few minutes to complete. Applicants simply need to meet the established requirements and fill out their application form.

Personal information for the ETIAS Italy

US citizens need to enter a few essential personal details when completing the ETIAS Italy application.

The form will require that applicants fill out the following information:

• Full name as it appears on the passport used for the application
• Date and place of birth

US citizens travelling are advised to get medical insurance in case of an emergency during their trip. Non-Eu citizens are not covered, and health services must be paid for in accordance with the relative scale of charges.

For entry into, stay or transit in the Schengen Area, foreign nationals shall be in possession of a passport or other travel document recognised by all Schengen States.

For entry, stay or transit in Italy, foreign nationals shall be in possession of a passport or another travel document recognised by the Italian government.

Annex No. 10 of the Practical Handbook established by European Commission’s Decision No. 395 of January 28, 2020 (“Inventory of travel documents which entitle the holder to cross the external borders and which may be endorsed with a visa”) – available on the European Council’s website – contains the list of foreign travel documents recognised by Italy and the other Member States.

Travel documents are considered valid if “besides fulfilling the terms and conditions set out in Articles 13 and 14 of the Convention Implementing the Schengen Agreement, they duly attest to the holder’s identity and nationality or citizenship”.

Having a valid travel document is essential for submitting a visa application.

In particular, please note that:

•  no visa may be affixed to a travel document that has expired;
• the residual period of validity of the travel document shall be at least three months after the intended date of departure from the territory of the Schengen States;
• the travel document shall have been issued within the previous ten years;
• the travel document shall have at least two free pages.

A foreigner holding a travel document that is not recognised by Italy may possibly be issued a “laissez-passer” by our diplomatic-consular Representation, valid only for Italy, which will not allow transit through the territory of the other Schengen States.

The following travel documents are deemed valid for the purposes of issuing entry visas and for crossing borders:

• Passport . Internationally recognised document entitling the holder to travel from one country to another. It may be:

–         diplomatic , service (official, special, or for public affairs) or ordinary ;

–         individual (with the possible registration of the spouse and minor children) or collective (for groups of no less than 5 and no more than 50 people, all travelling together and for the same purposes – usually tourism – all having the same nationality, and all entering into, staying in, and leaving the Schengen area together: each member shall be in possession of an individual identity document, accompanied by a photograph).

Other travel documents, equivalent to a passport, are the following:

• travel document for stateless persons issued in accordance with the Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons signed in New York on September 28, 1954. Stateless persons are subject to a visa requirement for Italy, unless they hold a residence permit issued by one of the Schengen States;
• refugee travel document issued in accordance with the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees signed in Geneva on July 28, 1951. Refugees are subject to a visa requirement for Italy, unless they hold a residence permit issued by one of the Schengen States or a travel document issued by one of the countries that signed the Strasbourg Agreement of April 20, 1959;
• foreigner travel document , issued to those who cannot obtain a valid travel document from the authorities of the country of which they are nationals. It follows the visa regime in force for the country of which the person concerned is a citizen;
• seafarer’s book , a professional document issued to seafarers for performing their activity. It is recognised as a valid document for entering the Schengen Area only in relation to the seafarer’s professional needs, and not for other reasons. Italy recognises the seafarer’s books issued by the EU Member States, the countries of the European Economic Area, the States that adhere to the International Labour Convention No. 108 (Geneva, May 13, 1958), and those with which it has stipulated specific bilateral agreements;
• air navigation document , issued to pilots and cabin crew of civil airlines for performing their activities, in accordance with the Civil Aviation Convention signed in Chicago on December 7, 1944: Pilot Licence, Crew Member Certificate. These are travel documents that are recognised by the signatory countries as not requiring a visa – by way of reciprocity – provided that entry is motivated by reasons relating to professional activity;
• United Nations laissez-passer , issued by the Secretary General of the United Nations to UN staff and staff of its specialized Agencies and organisations under the Convention on Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations adopted by the UN General Assembly in New York on November 21, 1947. Holders of this document are exempt from the requirement of short-stay visas (for stays not exceeding 90 days);
• document issued by NATO Headquarters to personnel – military, civilian staff and their dependants (spouse and children) – posted to a State of the Atlantic Alliance, in accordance with the Convention between the signatory States to the North Atlantic Treaty signed in London on June 19, 1951 and ratified by Italy with Law No. 1335 of November 30, 1955. The members of a NATO force (but not the accompanying civilian staff or dependants) are exempt from visa requirements;
• identity card for citizens of the EU Member States , also valid for expatriation for work purposes. It is exempt from visa requirements;
• identity card (and other documents) for nationals of the States adhering to the European Agreement on the Abolition of Passports (Paris, December 13, 1957), valid for travelling to the territory of one of the signatory States for tourist purposes, for journeys not exceeding 3 months. It is exempt from visa requirements;
• list of participants in school trips within the European Union , issued to foreign students residing in the EU Member States, in accordance with the Council decision of November 30, 1994 on a joint action adopted by the Council of the European Union. Holders are exempt from visa requirements;
• laissez-passer , issued in lieu of a passport to foreigners who have no travel document valid for all the Schengen States, or only for Italy. It follows the visa regime in force for the country of which the person concerned is a citizen;
• border laissez-passer – or border card – granted to nationals living in border areas, for crossing the border itself and travelling to the corresponding areas of neighbouring States, without a visa.

Should You Carry Your Passport in Italy?

Many tourists wonder if it is needed to carry a passport while traveling in Italy. For someone who never visited it before, it can be hard to understand the laws. So, I did some research to help you solve all your doubts about carrying your passport.

So, should you carry your passport in Italy?  According to the law of DLGS, 25 July 1998, N.286, you are always required to carry with you the original passport in Italy. It isn’t legally valid to carry a photocopy, but it should be enough. You are unlikely to get stopped by police, but be careful.

There are many mistakes that tourists do with their passport in Italy. I will share with you valuable information to help you avoid legal issues during your trip.

You may have a lot of reasons to be afraid of carrying your passport in public. There is always a risk of lose it or being robbed, no matter where you are. But the problem comes when you expect that something bad will happen to you.

The reality is that you should always carry your passport all the time, even if it is risky. By doing this, you could avoid bills worth thousands of Euros and a bad moment. So, it is always a good idea to keep all your identification with you. Something can happen when you don’t expect it anywhere.

Should You Walk Around With Your Passport?.

As a tourist, you shouldn’t face any problems with the police or Carabinieri at all. There is a high chance that authorities will never check you. They won’t stop every tourist in the streets, but it is best to stay on the rule. I would definitely carry identification in any place I go, you never know.

In case a cop stops you, just be honest and do everything they say. Usually, they do it to prevent any illegal or terrorist activities. So, there is nothing to be afraid of being arrested as long as you are not a criminal.

If you are an Italian citizen, you will need to carry your ID or  Carta D’Identità  in public. However, you are not required to show any document to the police. You will only need to provide your name, surname, residence, etc. But if you have nothing to hide, why would you do that? The Art. 651 of the Italian Penalty Code says that you could be arrested if you fail to give your identity.

Can You Carry a Copy of Your Passport in Italy?

There is a lot of confusion with this question, including Italians as well. Probably, you heard a lot of people saying it is legal to carry a copy, and others not. Legally speaking, it is wrong to bring a copy of the passport. But it should be tolerable in most situations, even because you are a tourist.

Obviously, there is always a chance to find overly strict police or cops. If that happens, just clarify that you are worried about losing it or get robbed. Also, try to stay calm and don’t get nervous if they ask you a lot of questions. This is the main reason why I like to carry my passport with me all the time.

Where Do You Need to Carry Your Passport?

It is crucial to take identification with you every time you go to a public place. There is the possibility of getting checked in any place randomly, even in the park. The cops and police will ask you to prove your identity, and you must give them credible information.

Sometimes you will need to show your passport while entering in some places as well. For example, it is required to carry identification to enter the Colosseum. Also, you must have the actual one if you plan to contract a service or buy something expensive.

I will tell you a story. A couple of years ago, my sister got stopped by a policeman in Bari. She didn’t expect that because police rarely stop you without reason. Then, he asked her a lot of questions to find a problem. But thankfully, she always carries all her identification while walking around. The policeman couldn’t find any issue and had to let her go. 

Do You Need to Carry Your Passport On Trains?

According to ItaliaRai l , it is always recommended to carry your passport while traveling with trains. You will need your passport to validate your ticket for the first time. Also, a train conductor could ask you to verify your identity. The same happens with Trenitalia .

My father always tells me to carry my passport or my ID while I am aboard, even if it isn’t strictly needed. I would definitely take the original one with me or at least a photocopy. Many people got into trouble for traveling without any identification.

Do Italian Hotels Take Your Passport?

All hotels will take your passport in order to register your information as a client. They will ask for it as soon as you enter the reception for check-in. Many hotels will keep your passport until you check-out and leave the room. Although, you have the right to request it whenever you want without breaking any rule.

According to Art. 109 of TULPS , it is necessary to have at least one of these documents for check-in and complete your registration:

• Identity Card
• Passport and a photocopy of it
• Driving license
• Boat license
• Pension Booklet
• Valid identification with your photo

Should You Leave Your Passport In a Hotel?

You could safely leave your passport in the hotel and bring a photocopy with you. But from my experience, it is better to always keep it with you. While photocopies should be enough for the most part, there are some situations where it is better to carry the original document with you.

Don’t get me wrong, nothing terrible will happen if you leave it in the hotel. And if you are a distracted person, then it is better to leave it in the room. Just put it in a security box or lock it in a suitcase with a padlock. Never leave it in an obvious place like under the bed or in view. If you feel that the hotel is unsafe, then bring it with you or just change the hotel.

An easy way to never forget your valuable things is to put one shoe in the safe along with your valuables. Make sure you will need to wear that shoe again in the morning. 

How Can You Keep Your Passport Safe in Italy?

There are many ways to keep your passport safe with ease. But the most important thing I want to mention is to use your common sense. Believe me, all you need to do is to follow your instinct and your intuition, that’s it. Anyway, these are some tips to help you do it:

• Take a picture of your passport. Remember to take photos of all your documents, including your passport. This will help you to have all the times your identifications if you need them. Also, send the images by email or upload them on cloud storage. It is so much easier to replace the passport with a picture if you lose it.
• Wear a money belt. Probably, this is the easiest way to keep your passport safe. Just wear it under your clothes and you are ready to go. You can find money belts on Amazon for a relatively cheap price using this link .
• Don’t put your passport in a backpack. You should never wear backpacks if you are traveling. But if you do, make sure you always wear it in front of you. Don’t worry if you look silly.
• Don’t get distracted: Most people who lose their passport is because of their negligence. They just forget to take it at check-out or don’t remember where they leave it. If you don’t care about your stuff, nobody will.
• Take inventory of your documents. I know it can be stressful, but you should check if you still have your passport with you. A good idea to do it is to set the alarm every hour with the message: “Hey  (your name) ! Do you still have your passport?”
• Keep several photocopies. I recommend you to make a bunch of photocopies before you leave your home. It is best to make colored ones and separate them with the original one.
• Never keep your passport in your pocket.  You shouldn’t ever carry a document or your wallet in your pocket. There are pickpockets everywhere in Italy, and if you do that, you will be an easy target. Also, it could slip out of your pocket and lose it.

Congratulazioni, you have your new Italian passport. Now how do you effectively and safely use both your Italian and U.S. passports together?

This guide will walk you through the step-by-step processing of traveling with two passports, from buying a ticket to returning home. For the sake of easiness, we will assume traveling between the United States and the European Union / Italy, but this method will work for any other country where traveling with your Italian passport may be advantageous (i.e. no visa needed for Italian vs. US passport).

Before you Start: CHECK YOUR PASSPORT EXPIRATION DATES!

You know how convenient it is that you have a 10 year validity on your passport? What if I told you that it effectively is not valid for 10 years? Since most countries you travel to with your US passport require a minimum 6 months validity of your passport past your estimated date of return (NOT departure from) to the US, the validity is effectively 9.5 years instead. The same is true for your Italian passport in many cases. If either passport is due to expire before 6 months past the end of your trip, you should apply for a new passport before proceeding.

Warning to British Citizens: If you are a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and your British passport has extended validity (i.e. was issued more than 10 years ago and the UK Home Office / His Majesty’s Passport Office added remaining validity from your previous passport), you should apply for a new passport before proceeding. The European Union (and most other countries) do NOT allow travel on passports older than 10 years old, regardless if your home country still considers it valid. The United Kingdom is now treated as a third-party nation for all purposes of travel to the EU and Schengen Zone (excluding the Republic of Ireland, which is subject to the Common Travel Arrangement).

Why do I want to use my Italian passport over my US passport?

Your Italian passport allows you unlimited access to the European Union – you are European after all. One of the benefits extended to European Union, EEA, and Swiss citizens when passing through immigration in the EU/EEA/EFTA/Schengen Zone is the ability to use the eGates. This can potentially save you hours in line during busy tourist seasons. If you plan on staying in the EU or Schengen Zone for greater than a 90-day period, you should use your Italian passport to avoid potential questions of overstaying on your departure.

ETIAS. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System. Beginning in November 2025, the European Union will require American citizens to acquire electronic permission to travel and enter the Schengen Zone through a program known as ETIAS. Americans will need to request and receive formal approval to travel to the majority of Europe. An ETIAS authorisation issued will be valid for 3 years for multiple entries and will cost ~$8,00 USD to apply for. ETIAS authorisations will be tied to individual documents, so when a passport expires, so does the ETIAS, regardless if the three year period of validity has been reached. Traveling on an Italian passport avoids this requirement. Dual citizens will not need an ETIAS if they possess EU citizenship.

Visa-free access to other countries outside Europe. Some countries also offer visa-free entry to Italian citizens where they might charge a fee to Americans (example: Thailand). Using your Italian passport may save you a few hundred dollars in visa fees you’d otherwise have to pay only as an American. A big current advantage is 15-day visa free access to China being piloted for citizens of Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, and Malta through November 2024.

Finally, technically speaking, Italy requires its own citizens to enter Italy on their Italian passports, so it’s probably a good idea if you do. Besides, this topic is much less complicated than it seems.

The Three Basic Rules of Multi-Passport Travel.

1) Airlines care about seeing the passport that allows you to go where you’re going.

2) Immigration authorities care about the passport that authorizes you to be where your two feet are currently planted.

3) Never show both passports to immigration authorities unless you’re asked to do so (see example below). Thinking about it this way will help you remember which passport to use. As we go through these steps, think about how this rule applies to each step.

• ONLY SHOW BOTH PASSPORTS IF ASKED OR NEEDED . If you are asked by immigration authorities where you came from (and your Italian passport is blank with stamps) you should answer the United States. If asked how you were able to stay in the United States for so long, state that you are also a US citizen and show your American passport as proof. You should always show your US passport as proof of your American citizenship if needed.

Let’s get started.

Buying Your Ticket

When you buy an international ticket from an airline, it is that airline’s responsibility to ensure that you are legally able to enter the destination you are purchasing a ticket to. If an airline allows an ineligible passenger to board a flight for a country they do not have legal clearance to enter, they will face steep fees from the appropriate immigration authority and must return that person to their point of origin at their own expense. Thus, the airline is going to have a vested interest to ensure you can enter your destination legally and that you have the appropriate authorization to stay there for the length you intend to.

For this reason, you should purchase tickets to European Union, EEA, and Schengen Zone countries using the information from your Italian passport.

• You are a married woman and your maiden name is not the name in your US passport (remember, last names don’t change with marriage in Italy). In this case, book the ticket with your US passport. Make sure your married name has been added to Page 4 of your Italian passport. This will suffice for check-in purposes on both legs of your trip and allow you to continue to follow the same steps below.
• Your flight will connect to Europe via Canada (i.e. Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec, etc.). In this case, you should use your US passport to avoid having to get an eTA (electronic travel authorization) to Canada on your Italian passport.

The airline transmits a flight roster ahead of time to immigration authorities in the arrival country – this lets them know to expect an Italian, not an American.

Departure to Italy – The Night Before

Check In. You will be asked to verify your Passport details in online check in 24 hours before your flight departs. You should enter your Italian passport here.

WHEN TO NOT USE YOUR ITALIAN PASSPORT AT CHECK-IN : During online check-in the airline is asking you for ESTA or Permanent Residency (or other visa) information in order to facilitate your return to the United States. Some airlines, such as American Airlines, have begun asking for information of foreign nationals traveling round-trip from the United States. Obviously, as a dual US-Italian national, you do not have any Permanent Residency/Green Card or other information to provide. If the airline asks for this information during online check-in when using your Italian passport info, switch to your U.S. passport for on-line check in and then change the passport on file to your Italian passport at a check-in counter at the airport.

Departure to Italy – At the Airport

Check In & Bag Drop. If you are checking bags, the airline agent will ask to verify your passport through their e-verify system. This confirms you as having your documents verified on the airline roster for the arriving country’s immigration authority. Use your Italian passport here. If you are asked to provide proof of legal residence if you are on a return ticket, then show your US passport to prove your right to return.

TSA / Security. The TSA is not US immigration. They do not check for immigration status for foreign nationals when checking ID. However, they are much less likely to scrutinize an American versus a foreign national. Use your US passport for the ID check to clear security.

Boarding the plane. You will be asked to board the plane with your passport open to the picture page. You should present your Italian passport when going through the boarding scan.

Random US Exit Immigration. Unlike other countries, the US does not have formal exit immigration control. Instead, they rely on departure rosters and airline document verification to know which foreign nationals are leaving the country. Occasionally, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (CBP or ICE officers) may conduct random exit checks inside the jet bridge as you are boarding your plane. It is VERY important that you be prepared for this eventuality, as you must always present to yourself to US authorities as an American . If you encounter one of these officers, be sure to present your US passport (keep your Italian one in your pocket to avoid any confusion). This has been happening more and more in major metro departure hubs such as Detroit (DTW), Dallas (DFW), Atlanta (ATL), New York (LGA, JFK, EWR) and more.

Arrival in Italy (or first point of Schengen arrival) – Immigration

When arriving in Italy (or your first point of entry into the Schengen Zone) you will be required to clear immigration before leaving the airport or going on to a connecting flight.

• Example of Schengen Connection: Flying to Rome via Amsterdam from Detroit. I would clear Schengen immigration in Amsterdam, NL before continuing on to Rome. I would not have any additional formal checks in Rome (unless random). Landing in Rome would feel identical to landing on a domestic flight in the US – simply walk to baggage claim and be on your way.

The Schengen Area consists of 29 countries, including four which are not members of the  European Union  (EU). Two of the non-EU members –  Iceland  and  Norway  – are part of the  Nordic Passport Union  and are officially classified as states associated with the Schengen activities of the EU. [39] Switzerland  was allowed to participate in the same manner in 2008, and  Liechtenstein  in 2011.  De facto , the Schengen Area also includes four European micro-states – Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and the Vatican City – that maintain open or semi-open borders with other Schengen member countries. [40]  Although Andorra’s agreements with France and Spain make it effectively part of Schengen, [41]  this can be avoided by requesting entry and exit stamps at the border. [42] One EU member state –  Ireland  – negotiated opt-outs from Schengen and continues to operate border controls with other EU member states, while at the same time being part of the open-border  Common Travel Area  with the United Kingdom (a  former EU member ) and the  Crown Dependencies . The remaining EU member state – Cyprus – is obliged by its  Treaties of Accession  to join the Schengen Area eventually. However, before fully implementing the Schengen rules, the state must have its preparedness assessed in four areas:  air borders ,  visas , police cooperation, and  personal data protection . This evaluation process involves a questionnaire and visits by EU experts to selected institutions and workplaces in the country under assessment. [43] Bulgaria  and  Romania , the newest members having joined on 31 March 2024, only have air and maritime borders open, with land border controls remaining in place pending agreement to lift them. 🇬🇧 Brexit Notice 🇬🇧

The 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇬🇧 officially departed the European Union on 31 January 2020 at 23:00 GMT and is no longer an EU member state. British nationals are now considered third-country nationals to the European Union member states and likewise EU citizens are now third party nationals inside the United Kingdom. The Transition Period which allowed Freedom of Movement ended on 31 December 2020. Additional bilateral immigration controls are now in effect, including customs and duty-free changes, between the European Union and the United Kingdom. This may include future requirements for British citizens to obtain an ETIAS authorization when it goes into effect in November 2025. This provision does not apply to British and Irish citizens when traveling to/from the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, which still allows Freedom of Movement for British and Irish citizens between the two countries under the Common Travel Arrangement. Northern Ireland is still subject to the EU Customs Zone as part of the Brexit departure agreement in order to avoid a hard border on the Isle of Ireland.

Using the eGate . If you and everyone in your party are EU/EEA citizens and are all over the age of 16 (18 in some countries), you may use the eGates. These are automated immigration control gates where you scan your passport and look at a camera to have your face scanned. Your face scan is compared to the biometric data in your passport. When accepted, your passport will be spit back out to you and you may walk through the gate across the border. No stamps, no officers required. Note that some airport eGates will display instructions to you such as in Italian (“ guardare qui “) instead of English (“look here”). The below video is for the UK, but describes the eGate procedure for all EU airports that have them.

How to Use the eGate

Use the EU/EEA citizens line . If you have someone in your party under the age of 16 or someone related to you who is NOT an EU/EEA citizen (ex: your spouse), you may still use the expedited EU line, but must speak to an officer to have your passports manually inspected. Please note that use of the EU line for non-EU spouse/relative is NOT guaranteed , it is a courtesy and if an officer directs you to the non-EU line, you should follow their instructions.

Traveling with Minor Children Without the Other Parent. If you are a parent traveling with your child without the other parent present, it is good practice to keep a notarized letter from the other parent in your possession stating their permission for you to travel alone with the child and the dates of travel (this is to prevent child abduction). Keeping copies of the children’s birth certificates with you as well will help you avoid headaches. This practice is strictly enforced in London Heathrow (LHR) if you happen to travel through there.

Returning to the U.S. – The Night Before

Check In . Check in for your US-bound itinerary using your US passport. US immigration will receive this roster from the airline. Using your US passport allows you to board a US-bound plane. Foreign nationals require either an ESTA (electronic visa waiver) or a physical visa to enter the US. Be sure to use your US passport.

It is not lawful for a US citizen to attempt to enter the United States on a foreign passport or to obtain an ESTA for travel on their foreign passport. You will be caught and fined. Do NOT attempt it.

Returning to the U.S. – At the Airport.

Check In & Bag Drop . If you are checking bags, the airline agent will ask to verify your passport through their e-verify system. This is confirming you as having your documents verified on the airline roster for the arriving country’s immigration authority – in this case the United States. Use your American passport here. You should use your US passport here even if you will connect in a another Schengen Zone country first before leaving the Schengen Zone.

Security . You may use either passport for the EU airport security. Like the US however, they might be more inclined to be less scrutinous of a European, so I would use my Italian passport here.

Exit Immigration . If you are leaving Italy (or your departure country) directly for the United States (or another non-Schengen country like the UK), you will clear exit immigration in your departure country (in our scenario here, we would clear exit control in Italy). If you are connecting in another Schengen Zone country before continuing to the US, you will clear exit immigration in that country (i.e. flying to US from Rome via Amsterdam, I would clear exit immigration in Amsterdam). You should use your Italian passport for exit immigration – this marks you as having left Europe (i.e. one entry, one exit). You will clear exit immigration before you reach your plane gate departing for the United States (or other country outside the Schengen Zone [ex: UK, Ireland]). You may use the eGate if it is open (see above for video and age restrictions), otherwise you will use the general EU/EEA line to see an officer.

Boarding the Plane to the US . Show your US passport to the picture page to board the plane. Occasionally, agents will come around and ask screening questions to all passengers before the plane boards (common in Amsterdam and Paris) and sometimes select people for random additional screening. You should present your US passport to these agents.

• Note for departures to the US from Dublin, Ireland . Dublin Airport participates in the US CBP Preclearance program. You will actually clear US immigration before boarding your plane. It will be very obvious that you are clearing US immigration at that time. They are US officers and you are subject to all US laws at that time.

DUTY FREE and EU TAX REFUNDS: If you are NOT a resident of the European Union, you may still claim the EU tax refund at your last port of departure from the EU, regardless of your citizenship.

Arrival in the United States

Use your U.S. passport to clear US Immigration and Customs. If an officer questions why you do not have a stamp from your trip, simply say you did not receive a stamp. If they probe further than that, you should present your Italian passport as proof that you legally traveled. It is your legal right as an American to enter the United States, an officer cannot deny you entry.

If you are a member of Global Entry or NEXUS, you may use the eGates/kiosks as normal to proceed through immigration.

US CUSTOMS REMINDER:

You are still subject to US Customs limits on duty free items and restrictions for import. US Citizens are generally exempt on $800 USD in valued items bought abroad. Anything in excess of that amount should be declared. IMPORTANT : Fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, etc. are expressly prohibited for entry! This includes any fruit that may have been given to you as a snack on your plane ride home! You may be fined up to $500 USD and have your trusted traveler status in Global Entry or NEXUS revoked for violating the law. Renewing Your US Passport Online Is Even Easier Now

O ne of the more annoying bureaucratic processes has just gotten a whole lot easier. After first testing it in the fall of 2022, the US State Department has relaunched an online passport renewal program in beta release for a limited number of users each day.

The program for renewing US passports online opens each day on the MyTravelGov website at 1 p.m. ET and closes when it reaches an unspecified number of applicants. That open window lasted mere minutes for the week after the program restarted on June 12, but recent CNET testing shows you now have much more time each day to apply.

On both July 9 and July 10, the online passport renewal system was open for more than two hours until after 3 p.m. ET. That means you've probably got at least a two-hour window each day to begin the online passport renewal process.

How does the new US online passport renewal system work?

Most US citizens currently renew their passports  by printing and filling out form DS-82 , then mailing that form with a new passport photo and a renewal fee in the form of a check or money order. The online passport renewal system instead uses a website form and a payment system that allows credit cards, debit cards or online ACH transfers.

Renewing your passport online doesn't mean that you'll receive it any sooner than usual, though. The State Department is sticking to its " routine service " for passport renewals, whether they're online or by mail. That means you'll receive your new passport in six to eight weeks, no matter how you apply. If you need your passport sooner than that, you'll need to apply by mail and pay $60 more for expedited service .

Who is eligible to renew their US passport online?

The most important qualifying factors for renewing your passport online are:

• You are at least 25 years old.
• You live in the US (state or territory).
• Your current passport is or was valid for 10 years.
• Your current passport must be at least 9 years old and have been issued within the last 15 years (2009-2015).
• You still have your existing passport, and it's not mutilated or damaged.

Along with the main eligibility requirements, the State Department provides a list of further restrictions for online renewal:

• You can only renew regular passports online, not "special issuance" passports (like diplomatic, official or service passports).
• You cannot change your name, gender, place of birth or date of birth from your previous passport.
• You must be able to pay for online renewal using a credit card, a debit card or ACH transfer.
• You must be able to upload a new passport photo.
• You cannot travel internationally for eight weeks after submitting your online renewal application.

That last restriction is important because your existing passport, if still valid, will be immediately canceled as soon as your online renewal application is accepted.

If you don't meet the eligibility requirements for renewing your passport online, you'll need to renew by mail or in person at a passport agency .

If I'm eligible, how do I renew my US passport online?

Right now, MyTravelGov is accepting a certain number of online passport renewals each day (including weekends) around midday ET. Several news publications, however, including the Thrifty Traveler , are reporting the window will open each day right at 1 p.m. ET.

Before you can apply for an online passport renewal, you'll need to create a MyTravelGov account, if you don't already have one. Visit the MyTravelGov website , click on the blue Sign In  button in the top-right corner, then click Create an account . This will begin the process of creating an account with login.gov , the US federal government's authentication system.

You'll then need to enter an email address and your choice of language: login.gov is available in English, Spanish and French. After submitting your email address, you'll need to verify it by clicking on a link in an email message from login.gov, after which you'll choose a password and preferred form of multifactor authentication.

You'll then need to provide personal information for the account, at minimum your first and last name. Once you're finished, you should be able to access the online passport renewal page . Hit the blue Start button at the bottom of the page to begin the application. The State Department estimates that the online application process will take about 40 minutes.

If the online passport renewal application window is not open, you'll receive a message that you'll need to return and try again tomorrow. If you're lucky enough to begin the application, you'll need the following items:

• Your existing US passport.
• A digital passport photo.
• Credit card, debit card or your bank's routing and account numbers for ACH transfer.

In the first part of the application, you'll enter information about your current passport, your legal name and whether you want a passport book, passport card or both. Next you'll update your digital passport photo , and then finally your payment information.

MyTravelGov will send you two email verifications after you submit your renewal application: The first will confirm your pending payment, and the second will confirm that the payment has been received. One week after you apply, you can sign up for email updates about your passport using the State Department's online passport status system . You should expect to receive your new passport in the mail within six to eight weeks.

What about renewing US passport cards online?

Passport cards are objects that look much like US driver's licenses and can be kept in your wallet. They allow for travel from the US by land or sea to Canada, Mexico or Caribbean countries. They are not valid for any international travel by air.

You can renew both passport books and cards online. Basically, you can renew whichever US passport document that you currently hold. If you have an old passport book and passport card, you can renew both at the same time. If you have one or the other, you can only renew that specific document.

Perhaps you’ve heard you can now renew your US passport online. As long as you meet certain requirements, there’s a beta website for that . The State Department tells me it’s not necessarily faster — but anecdotally, my family just had two of the speediest, most painless experiences we’ve ever had with the US government.

I applied from my phone, I shot my own digital photo at home — and one week later, I picked up my new passport at the post office. I submitted it on June 15th, my passport was issued on June 20th, and it was waiting for me on the 21st. That’s just six days in total.

Five business days each

When my wife tried it, her renewal went even quicker: she applied on June 24th, her application was approved on the 26th, her new passport shipped on the 27th, and it was ready for pickup on the 29th. Just five days, including shipping.

Plus, we didn’t pay for an envelope or postage or have to ship our passports. I even used my old passport as a photo ID when I picked up the new one.

What’s the catch?

First, you should know it won’t always be this fast.

During the beta, the US Department of State is intentionally limiting how many people can apply each day, and Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel tells me that’s why my turnaround time was so quick. The beta has only served tens of thousands of people so far, not millions just yet!

The State Department does expect to shave off one to two weeks of processing time because you don’t need to mail in a passport and online payment processing is fast, Patel writes — but one-week turnarounds are likely to disappear as the department ramps up how many people can get in.

Officially, the department’s still quoting six to eight weeks for routine service, the same as it was before the pandemic began. “The time it takes to get a passport will be the same as renewing by mail,” its website warns.

Second , you can only do the easiest kinds of passport renewals online. You must be age 25 or older, currently living in the United States, and renewing a regular 10-year tourist passport issued between 2009 and 2015. You can’t change your name, gender, date, or place of birth, and you need to have your old passport handy. Here’s a fuller list of requirements .

Third, you have to reserve a slot. You need to create a Login.gov account and visit this website each day around 10AM PT / 1PM ET to see if you can get in. You’ll typically see this special message below “Renew Your Passport” if that day’s window has already closed:

Once you get in, you don’t need to complete your application immediately; the website automatically saved where I left off. Even if you don’t have a passport photo ready, go ahead and get that slot!

Fourth, you may need a hand to take a valid passport photo ; selfies won’t work because your arms need to be at your sides in the frame. I had to hunt around my house for an off-white background with plenty of light, too — but they didn’t reject my photo for having some visible wall texturing in the background.

Fifth, you may not be able to plan any international travel until your new passport arrives, even if it takes longer than you hope; the State Department says your current passport will be canceled after you submit the online application, even if it still would have been valid for a while.

The State Department expects 5 million people will be eligible for online passport renewal every year once the program launches in full, according to Patel. That’s as much as two-thirds of all US passport renewals.

You can renew by mail if your most recent passport:

• Can be submitted with your application,
• Is not damaged (other than normal  wear and tear ),
• Has never been reported lost or stolen,
• Was issued within the last 15 years,
• Was issued when you were age 16 or older, and
• Was issued in your current name (or you can provide a document like a marriage certificate or divorce decree to show you have changed your name)

If you want to renew a limited validity passport that is valid for less than the normal period of 10 years, you must meet these requirements:

• One of your previous passports must have been issued for 10 years,
• Your passport cannot be limited because you’ve lost multiple passports, and
• Your passport cannot be limited because you’ve had multiple damaged passports

Tips to complete your form:

• Complete all parts of the form.  Sign and date your form  before you mail it.
• Print your form on single-sided paper. We do not accept double-sided forms. 
• Check your date of birth and previous passport issuance date if you did not get the form you expected to receive on the form filler.
• You can renew a passport book , a passport card , or both documents.
• Use Form DS-82 to apply for your first passport book if you only have a passport card, or to apply for your first passport card if you only have a passport book.  
• If you travel many times each year, get a larger passport book with more visa pages, at no extra cost.  Check the 'large book' box at the top of the DS-82.
• If renewing from Canada, do not include your Canadian Social Insurance Number on the form in place of your U.S. Social Security number. 

Submit your most recent U.S. passport

When you renew by mail or in person, you must submit your most recent passport(s) with your application. We will return your most recent passport book or card in a separate mailing. The most recent passport may not arrive for up to 8 weeks after you get your new passport. Learn below what document to submit based on what you want to renew:

Submit other documents if you are changing your name

If the name you are using is different from the name on your most recent U.S. passport, you must provide a  certified copy of the legal name change  document. Examples include:

• Marriage certificate
• Divorce decree
• Court-ordered name change document

We will return your name change document in a separate mailing from your new passport.

Tips for renewing from Canada :

• If your Canadian divorce decree does not show that you are returning to your maiden name, you must provide proof of your birth or maiden name. Examples include an original or certified copy of your birth certificate.

You must provide one photo with your application. Go to our  Passport Photo page  for photo requirements and to see examples of photos. You can get a photo at:

• A company which offers photo services
• Home. Ask a friend or family member to take your photo. Print it on glossy or matte photo quality paper. 

Other reminders

• You must staple your photo to the application. Follow the instructions on the application. Use four staples vertically in the corners as close to the outer edges of the photo as possible.
• Do not bend the photo.

Pay using a personal check or money order and make it payable to the U.S. Department of State. Do not send cash.

• Add $60 to your application fee if you want  expedited service .
• Add $21.36 to your application fee if you want us to ship your completed passport in 1-2 days after we issue it.

• Please write the full name and date of birth of the applicant on the front of the check* or money order.
• Renewing from Canada? Personal checks or money orders must draw on U.S. financial institutions based in the United States and be payable in U.S. dollars. Acceptable U.S. checks and money orders must have a 9-digit routing number. Do not include 1-2 day or express delivery fees with your payment. These services are not available to U.S. residents in Canada.

Get My Passport Fast :  If you are traveling in less than 3 weeks, make an appointment to renew in person at a passport agency or center. Your appointment must be within 14 calendar days of your travel date.

• Delivering application to us : Pay for Priority Mail Express for faster delivery. The price for this service varies depending on the area of the country.
• Returning the passport to you : Pay $21.36 for 1-2 day delivery. This means you will receive your passport   1-2 days after we send it. Include this fee with your check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State. Do not submit a return envelope to us with pre-paid postage. 

You may receive your passport and supporting documents in separate mailings.

If you are renewing a passport card, we will send it to you via First Class Mail. We do not use 1-2 day delivery services for passport card only applications.

It may take 2 weeks from the day you apply until your application status is “In Process.” 

What is normal "wear and tear" of a passport?

Normal "wear and tear" of a U.S. passport does not count as damage. Normal wear includes:

• The bend of a passport after you carry it in your pocket
• Fanning of the visa pages after opening and closing the passport 

If your passport is damaged, you cannot renew it and must apply for a new passport.

Damage includes:

• Water stains
• A significant tear
• Unofficial markings on the data page
• Missing visa pages (torn out)
• A hole punch, or other injuries

Can I renew at an acceptance facility?

No. If you are renewing your passport with Form DS-82, acceptance facilities will not take your application. Acceptance facilities should never charge you a $35 fee for renewing your passport. These locations should only charge you a $35 fee if you are applying using Form DS-11.

You must mail in your renewal application (Form DS-82) yourself. Mailing your Form DS-82 can be confusing since some post offices are also passport acceptance facilities. Postal employees should not review your form and supporting documents before you mail it.

Send Form DS-82 and supporting documents using a trackable delivery method.

Do not use UPS, FedEx, or DHL since the address you need to send your Form DS-82 and supporting documents to is a Post Office (PO) Box. 

If I already have a passport book or card, can I use the DS-82 to get the other document?

If you have a passport book  and you are eligible to use Form DS-82, you may apply for a passport card as a renewal by mail even if it is your first  passport card .

If you have a passport card and you are eligible to use Form DS-82, you may apply for a passport book as a renewal by mail even if it is your first passport book. 

Can I send multiple renewal applications in one envelope?

Yes. If your family member or spouse is also renewing a passport, you may want to send multiple applications in the same envelope. You can pay for the applications using one check or money order. Make sure to add up the correct fees for multiple applications. 

How will you send my passport and supporting documents?

You will get multiple mailings. The number of mailings depends on what document(s) you asked for.

Passport Book : You may get your new passport and citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We will return the passport book using a trackable delivery service.

Passport Card : You may get your new passport card and your citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We only send the passport card via First Class Mail. We do not send cards using 1-2 day delivery services.

Both a Passport Book and Card : You may get three separate mailings:

• New passport book
• New passport card
• Citizenship documents

Contacting Us : If you have been waiting more than 8 weeks for your documents, call us at  1-877-487-2778  to report that you have not received your documents. 

If you want us to reimburse you for a lost supporting document, you must contact us within 90 days of the date which we mailed your passport. You will also need to provide a receipt to show the cost of replacing the document. 

I got a letter requesting that I resubmit my Form DS-82. What should I do?

When you renew by mail, our intake facility will review your application and supporting documents.

The intake facility will send you a letter if there is a problem with your application. The letter may include a QR code with a link to our website. Common reasons for getting this letter include:

• No signature or date on your form
• Bad or missing photo
• Pages of your form are missing
• Wrong or missing fees
• Most recent passport is missing
• Most recent passport issued over 15 years ago

Follow the instructions in the letter. You must include the letter we sent you when you resubmit the new application. 

When your application is at the intake facility, your application status will show as "Not Available" if you check our Online Passport Status System . Your application will be "In Process" once a passport agency or center begins processing your new application.

Routine:  6-8 weeks*

Expedited: 2-3 weeks and an extra $60*

*Consider the total time it will take to get a passport when you are booking travel.  Processing times only include the time your application is at a passport agency or center.
