Best time to Visit Chardham

Uttarakhand’s climate ranges from sun-kissed mountains in the summer to playful snowball fights with your family in the winter. However, the best time to visit Chardham is between the months of April and June . When vibrant blossoms accentuate narrow mountains trails and the summertime bodes the foothills well. However, we recommend you carry warm clothes and sunglasses, no matter how pleasant the weather. While this season is most suitable for visiting Kedarnath and Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri must be visited during the end of April since they are located at a much higher altitude. Temperatures fluctuate between 20-35 degrees during this time of the year. Visit the Thomas Cook India website to check out our Char Dham yatra tour packages and Uttarakhand tour packages during this period.

Some important junctions of this location are Haridwar, Dehradun, Rishikesh, Nainital, Kotdwar, Kathgodam, Pauri and Udham Singh Nagar. Where the mountains meet the Gods and where prayers are set afloat as flickering lights onto the holy rivers. This is Char Dham where each one of the four abodes brings you closer to the presence of the almighty, one step at a time. Millions of worshippers brave the intense trails leading up to these four heavenly abodes. Be it the vividly painted Badrinath Temple in all its glory on the snow-topped Nikantha or the Kedarnath temple set amidst its snow-covered surroundings.

The Char Dhamyatra pivots around towns and temples such as Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Apart from that, you can also visit Haridwar and Rishikesh. To let you contemplate a little further, here are a few places to visit in 4 Dham on your tour that spells spirituality and peace.

Yamunotri

Rishikesh .

Ring the bell as you enter this temple with the crowd swarming behind you to worship Lord Vishnu and feel it resonate in your soul. Amidst the mountains nestles the Badrinath temple - one of the most sought-after holy sites. Badrinath temple with its grand entrance is bathed with sheets of snow if you visit during the winter. This temple is home to Lord Vishnu and one of the four Char Dham Yatra’s pilgrimage sites. This sacred shrine has visiting hours from 4 am to 10 pm. Rumour also has it that each time a devotee opens the door to the temple; they find a lamp that has been burning continuously for the last six months. If you are interested in purchasing some sacred souvenirs, you must head to Salagram Sila - a sacred stone of Lord Vishnu. Here you will get religious books, ancient relics and holy threads.

Perched on the foothills of the Himalayas, Kedarnath is one of the four Char Dham Yatra’s pilgrimage centres in India. Situated amidst snow-covered mountains, the Kedarnath temple welcomes its devotees after an adventurous trek to Lord Shiva’s shrine. Moreover, the green meadows and lush forests located at the lower ranges of the Himalayas only enhance its charm. The 14-kilometre trek to the Kedarnath temple starts with Gauri Kund, another mythological location before snaking through the mountains with breathtaking vistas at every turn.

Resting along the banks of the Yamuna river, the Yamunotri temple is the least visited of all the Char Dham temples. Take a rejuvenating dip and wash away all your inhibitions in several hot springs located at the Yamunotri Temple. Watch other pilgrims cook potatoes and steamed rice that is offered in religious ceremonies or choose to help them fulfil their duties. The hike to this stairway to heaven commences at the quaint hamlet of Janki Chatti. If you find the trek difficult you can always take a pony ride to the top.

Identified as one of the holiest sites in the country, this town is the starting point for the trek to the source of the mighty Ganga. Make your way to Gangotri Village to purchase some woollen clothes, souvenirs and mementoes to take back home.

A yogic hub, this destination is a must visit on every pilgrim’s list. You hear it before you see it, with chanting from pandits lending serene background music to the surroundings. Watch devotees whisper prayers of hope under their breath, as set float their diyas onto the holy river. This holy hamlet feels divine. After all, it's one of the few places that will take you the closest to the presence of God.

Haridwar

If you cannot reach the stairway to heaven, don’t worry, you can take the gateway to the Gods in Haridwar instead. With pandits chanting holy words and priests holding large censers in their hands, you will be awestruck with the spirituality of this city. It is lit up with the piety of a thousand devotees and the sparkle in their eyes as they set their diyas adrift on the holy river in the hopes of having a conversation with God. Har ki Paudi is deemed to be the most historically significant temple in the city. This temple is famous for its Ganga aarti, with thousands of devotees attending every day. It is known to be the exact spot where the Ganges leaves the mountains and enters the planes.

The Uttarakhand Char Dham, also known as the Chota Char Dham Yatra, is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage circuits in India. The significance of Char Dham Yatra is massive, especially for the true-to-the-core devotees. These four sites, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, which are located in the state’s Garhwal region, are some of the most visited spiritual destinations in the country for a variety of reasons. The general belief is that everyone should go on the Char Dham yatra at least once in their lifetime to attain God's blessings. It is also believed that visiting these sites will help individuals wash away their sins and open the gates of salvation. But a lot more goes into driving millions of devotees to these holy pilgrimage sites around the year. Each of the Yatra points has its own significance and value per the ancient Hindu mythology and legends. This is why it is important to learn about its history and significance before going on the yatra. To begin with, the sequence of the Char Dham Yatra should be in a clockwise direction. So, the first site devotees visit for the yatra is Yamunotri Dham, followed by Gangotri Dham, then Kedarnath Dham, and finally ending at Badrinath Dham. The reason for this is associated with the magnitude of the sites themselves.

The Chota Char Dham significance is massive for individuals of the Hindu faith, and it is necessary to learn about them prior to the yatra. Here is the importance of Char Dham Yatra according to each pilgrimage point in Uttarakhand

  • Importance of Yamunotri Dham
  • Importance of Gangotri Dham
  • Importance of Kedarnath Dham
  • Importance of Badrinath Dham

Importance of Yamunotri Dham:

To begin explaining the importance of Char Dham Yatra, let us start with the first destination of this holy pilgrimage circuit, the Yamunotri Dham. The main centre of this site is the Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, also known as the Lady of Life. The sacred Yamuna River also originates in Yamunotri. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Yamuna was the twin sister of the God of Death, Yama. On the occasion of “Bhai Dooj”, Yama made a promise to Yamuna that whoever takes a dip in the waters of the Yamuna River will therefore attain salvation and not experience the sufferings of Yamlok (Hell). Hence, to this day, millions of devotees from across the world visit this Dham to take a dip into the holy river with the belief that it will wash away their sins and shield them against an unfortunate demise. They also visit the holy shrine of Yamuna to pay their respects and seek her blessings. Hence, the religious importance of the site adds to the overall Char Dham Yatra significance for Hindus in India.

Importance of Gangotri Dham:

After visiting the Yamunotri Dham, devotees move towards the Gangotri Dham, placed at an elevation of 3,400 m above sea level. It is located at Gomukh, which is the sacred source of the Ganga River. According to Hindu mythology, after numerous failed attempts, King Bhagirath was able to bring Ganga from heaven to earth through years of deep meditation at Gangotri. He was the grandson of King Anshuman and was able to impress Lord Shiva through his determination, who released three streams on earth, one of which came to be known as Bhagirathi. Similar to the Yamuna River, the Ganga River is also referred to as one of the holiest rivers flowing through India and a source of purity. So, numerous visitors take a tip in the river water to wash away their past misdeeds and embrace holiness. Devotees also visit the Ganga Temple to ask for holy blessings and visit the rock called “Bhagirathi Shila”, which is believed to be the place where King Bhagirath meditated. Another factor that adds to the importance of the site is the special puja conducted both at the river bank and within the shrine. Hence, the Gangotri Dham is a prominent holy location that increases the significance of Char Dham Yatra.

Importance of Kedarnath Dham:

Before expanding on the topic of “Kedarnath importance”, individuals must know that it is the third destination of the holy yatra. With the backdrop of snow-clad mountain ranges, it is one of the most beautiful and sacred pilgrimage sites in India. This shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the God of Destruction, and is a part of the 12 Jyotirlingas, which is one of the main points under the topic of “Kedarnath significance for Hindus”. According to Hindu mythology, the Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to relieve themselves from the culpability of killing their friends and blood relatives following the Kurukshetra battle. But Lord Shiva refused their request, assumed a disguise of a buffalo and started to roam within the Garhwal Himalayas. When he was discovered by the Pandavas, he went on to hide himself underground. Bhima, one of the five Pandavas, tried to stop him but failed to do so, and Lord Shiva disappeared, only leaving his hump behind. It is now worshipped as Kedarnath Temple, which is a part of the “Panch Kedar”. Some legends suggest that the original temple was built by Pandavas and the current temple was founded by Adi Shankaracharya. These are the factors behind the significance of Kedarnath Dham, and devotees from various corners of the world visit the temple to seek blessings from Lord Shiva.

Importance of Badrinath Dham:

The next stoppage point of the holy Yatra following Kedarnath is the Badrinath Dham. It is not only the final destination of the Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra but also a part of the Bada Char Dham Yatra. Hence, the significance of Badrinath Dham to individuals of the Hindu faith is immense. Located on the River Alakananda’s left bank, this Dham is nestled at an elevation of 3,133 metres. According to Hindu mythology, when Dharma’s two sons, Narayan and Nar, were looking for suitable places to set up their hermitage in the Himalayas, they came along Vridha Badri, Yog Badri, Bhavisya Badri and Dhyan Badri. These four sites are a part of the holy Panch Badri. Finally, they reached a place behind river Alakananda, which they named “Badri Vishal''. The Badrinath Dham is dedicated to the deity Lord Vishnu, known as the protector and preserver of the divine Hindu Trinity. To add to the giant pool of Badrinath significance, the temple is one of Lord Vishnu’s 108 Divya Desams and a part of the Panch Badri.

Another factor that highlights the role of Badrinath in Char Dham Yatra importance is that it was the location where Adi Shankaracharya achieved salvation, freeing himself of the process of reincarnation. Individuals on the Chhota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit end their Yatra by visiting this Dham to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu and achieve ‘Moksha”.

  • Kafuli/Kapaa - Do not miss out on this bowl of piping, hot spinach curry during your Char Dham tour, especially if you are visiting 4 Dham during the winter season. This could probably be Popeye the sailor man’s favourite dish! You could savour this dish in a bowl, just like soup or maybe with some steamed jeera rice.
  • Chainsoo - If you are missing home and longing for simple Ghar ki dal and roti, then you must try Chainsoo, a dish made of a variety of pulses with spices added to it. Local spices give this dish an earthy flavour and it tastes best with the Indian flatbread – roti.
  • Phaanu - If you are looking for a soupy meal that will warm your soul, do try Phaanu. Prepared from a variety of lentils and garnished with fresh coriander, this dish is best had with some steamed rice.

Tucked in the lap of the Himalayas, Char Dham temples are the spiritual epicentre for Hindus in India. Char Dham, a term coined by the prehistoric Hindu philosopher Shri Adi Shankaracharya, refers to the four abodes of God – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that the Pandavas visited all the four shrines to absolve their sins before embarking on their journey to heaven. Till date, as April arrives, millions of devotees gather in Uttarakhand to undertake the tough Chardham Yatra, believing that it can open their gates to salvation. After starting from the origin of river Yamuna, Yamunotri Dham, pilgrims head towards the renowned Gangotri shrine. Thereafter, they visit Shri Kedarnath Dham, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and finally end their holy journey at Shri Badrinath Dham, the only Dham sacred to Lord Vishnu. If you’re spiritually inclined and seeking a Char Dham tour to reconnect with God and fill your mind with spirituality, then pick any of the Chardham yatra package 2024 by MakeMyTrip.

Start your enlightening Chardham Yatra by seeking blessings at the sacred Yamunotri temple. Located amidst a picturesque green valley, Yamunotri is the place where the Yamuna originates. As per Hindu mythology, Yamuna is the twin sister of Yama (God of Death), one of the Ashtabharya of Krishna and daughter of Surya (the Sun God). Approachable by a six-kilometre trek from Janki Chatti, the holy town is mainly known for the sacred Gangotri Dham. The temple features a black marble statue of Goddess Yamuna, sitting beside the white stone idol of Goddess Ganga. Apart from the temple, you must include an excursion to Diyva Shila and hot water springs of Surya Kund and Gouri Kund in your Char Dham itinerary. Around a kilometre away from the main shrine is the Yamuna Glacier, located at an altitude of 6387 metre near the Bandarpunch peak in the Lower Himalayas. One of the 12 Jyotirlingas sacred to Lord Shiva and a part of the Char Dham and Panch Kedars (a group of 5 Shiva temples in Garhwal Himalayas) circuit, Kedarnath temple is an ancient holy temple. Many stories are associated with the origin of the temple. As per some of them, the temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th Century. Other versions claim that the Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva at the same place where the temple presently stands, to seek forgiveness for killing their cousins during the great war of Kurukshetra. Made of large grey stones, the temple has a Garbha Griha and a Mandap decorated with figures of various deities. To visit the temple, you will have to reach the last motorable point - Gaurikund and then walk or ride a pony for around 14 kilometres. However, if you’re booking a package with MakeMyTrip, you will also have an option to undertake Chardham Yatra by helicopter from Sirsi, Phata, or Guptakashi.

Badrinath temple, also known as Badrikashram, is the holiest of all the Char Dham temples where Lord Vishnu resides in his avatar of Badrinarayan. There are various stories associated with the origin of the Badrinath temple. As per one of them, Lord Vishnu once performed a rigorous meditation at this place. The meditation was so intense that he didn’t care about the weather conditions. To protect him from the scorching heat, Goddess Lakshmi took the shape of a Badri tree and spread over him. Lord Vishnu was so pleased by Goddess Lakshmi's devotion that he named the spot as Badrikashram. The black lingam stone in the temple was founded in the 8th century by Shri Adi Shankaracharya. After a few years, the lingam was enshrined in a cave, and later the Raja of Garhwal installed the deity by building a temple. It is said that visiting Badrinath can absolve all the sins of pilgrims. Another best part about Badrinath is that no trekking is required to reach the temple.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chardham Yatra Package

Ques. how long does the chardham tour package take.

Ans. A Chardham tour package can be for 4-6 days if you are journeying by helicopter. At the same time, it does require a minimum of 10-12 days if you are planning to complete the Chardham Yatra by road. And, if you have some time in hand, then there are many other landmarks including the Tapovan, Gaumukh, Auli, Chopta, Vasuki Tal, Bhauravnath Temple, Chopta and Hemkund Sahib that you can include in your itinerary.

Ques. From where does the Chardham tour start?

Ans. All Chardham tour packages usually begin from Haridwar. You can either fly to Dehradun and then go to Haridwar or reach the holy city directly by train or car. Thereafter, you have to travel to Yamunotri from Haridwar, which is around 6-7 hours drive by road. Your tour may also start from Dehradun if you choose to travel by helicopter to the Dhams.

Ques. Which are the Char Dhams in India?

Ans. The Char Dhams in the country are spread in four directions. The term was coined by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. These are Badrinath and Rameswaram in the north and south along with Puri and Dwarka in the east and west respectively. However, the Char Dhams or temples in the Himalayas are the following: • Yamunotri • Gangotri • Kedarnath • Badrinath

Ques. How should I complete the Chardham Yatra?

Ans. You should complete the Chardham Yatra in clockwise direction. This means reaching Haridwar first, before visiting Yamunotri. You can then go to Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. This should be an ideal way to complete the Chardham Yatra package. The pilgrimage sites encompass 1,607 kms in total. If you are going for a helicopter tour, then you can easily complete the pilgrimage in a week. Here is a sample itinerary: • Day 1- Reach Dehradun • Day 2- Dehradun-Kharsali-Yamunotri-Kharsali • Day 3- Kharsali-Harsil-Gangotri-Harsil • Day 4- Harsil-Sersi-Kedarnath-Sersi • Day 5- Sersi-Badrinath • Day 6- Return to Dehradun and then take your flight back home

Ques. Which Dham should I visit first?

Ans. If you are planning a chardham yatra package from Hyderabad , Bangalore, Delhi or any other city like Haridwar/Dehradun, you should know which Dham to visit first. Pilgrims believe that one should complete the hallowed Chardham Yatra in the clockwise direction. How does this work? The tour should begin from Yamunotri and then move to Gangotri, followed by Kedarnath and finally Badrinath. Getting to Haridwar will be a good way to start the Yatra in this manner. You can fly to the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun via Delhi and then take a cab to reach Haridwar which is just 235 kms away.

Ques. Is there any age limit for the Chardham Yatra?

Ans. The rules and regulations of the Chardham Yatra are governed by the temple committees and official authorities. Whether you are planning a Chardham tour package by helicopter or by road, there is no official age limit for the pilgrimage. However, the e-pass guidelines of the committee mentions that children below the age of 10 years should avoid the pilgrimage. Similarly, the advisory also mentions that those who are above the age of 65 should avoid going on the Chardham Yatra. Women who are pregnant are also advised to skip the pilgrimage due to the higher altitude, weather conditions and other risks.

Ques. Which is the best month to go on a Char Dham Yatra?

All the four Dhams or temples (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath) remain open only for half of the year. This is usually between April/May to October/November. The final dates are confirmed thereafter on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri by the Mandir Samiti. They are usually fixed by the priest of the famous Bhimashankar Linga Temple. Since the temples are positioned at higher altitudes, there is massive snowfall in the winter, making the committee close them in this period. Hence, you should plan your Chardham Yatra tour package in the stretch from April or May to October or November, as mentioned. Every winter, the Kedarnath Temple gates stay closed, while the idol is moved to the Ukhimath-based Omkareshwar Temple. The idols of the other Dhams are moved to and worshipped at the Shani Dev Temple in Kharsali, Mukhimath Temple in Mukba and the Vasu Dev Temple in Joshimath in the winter months.

Ans. While booking a Chardham Yatra package, you must also have an idea about the nearest airports for your journey. All the four Dhams are nearest to the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun.
