Swift Wows Fans During 3 Massive Shows at Gillette — Even Through Torrential Rain

Taylor swift fans were in awe of the pop star's three massive concerts in "foxy" foxboro over the weekend, by matt fortin • published may 22, 2023 • updated on may 22, 2023 at 4:53 pm.

It was a weekend that New England Swifties will remember "All Too Well."

Taylor Swift — who has been a fixture in pop music for years, but has recently seen her popularity catapult to stratospheric heights — performed three massive shows at "Foxy" Foxboro's Gillette Stadium over the weekend, creating lifelong memories for fans and several big moments that have captured the internet's attention.

STAY IN THE KNOW

One legendary night even had the crowd dancing in a storm in their best dress, fearless .

Swift's three Gillette shows were part of her massive Eras Tour, which has been the source of major ticketing woes and months' worth of anticipation. Fans in Massachusetts showed how long they've been looking forward to this weekend's shows, by arriving hours early decked out in lots of "Bejeweled" outfits and letting out thunderous applause — even through pretty heavy rain during Saturday's concert.

Rain show: 'a full deluge that never let up'.

All week, the forecast suggested that Saturday would bring rain, raising the prospect of a repeat from Swift's first Gillette Stadium show: a concert in the rain. And sure enough, the weather delivered.

In an Instagram post that garnered over 5 million likes, Swift thanked the "iconic crowd" at Gillette for dancing in the rain Saturday for an entire 3.5-hour-long concert .

"We’ve had rain shows at Gillette Stadium before but this was a full on deluge that never let up," Swift wrote. "I just want to thank that iconic crowd!!"

Swift appeared absolutely drenched during Saturday's show, but it didn't stop her from delivering exhilarating performances of many fan favorites. She even at one point was splashing water off the surface of her piano. The rain also didn't seem to stop the Swifties from enjoying themselves, ponchos and all.

"The fans and crowds in the New England, Boston, Foxboro, Massachusetts, area do not care if it rains. In fact, that kind of makes it more fun for you," Swift told the crowd. "And it makes it more fun for us because we just know that you guys are wild, you guys are just wild. You guys are up for it. And I love you so much for that, thank you."

'I Didn't Play That'

During Sunday night's show, as Swift was seated at her piano, the instrument began to play notes on its own.

Swift looked shocked, asking the audience, "Do you hear that, too?"

It was speculated that the piano was damaged or waterlogged by the torrential rain on Saturday, somehow leading it to play notes on its own.

Extensive Set List, With Surprise Songs

Swift's career — which kickstarted with her eponymous country debut album in 2006 — has been marked by distinct periods that showcase the singer's evolving musical style, outlook and fashion. The Eras Tour takes fans on a journey through those periods, featuring songs from throughout her career.

At Gillette, Taylor Swift leads fans on a dazzling tour through every era

Taylor Swift performed a 45-song set at Gillette Stadium on Friday night.

FOXBOROUGH — One of the many high points of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which opened its three-show run at Gillette Stadium on Friday, comes near the end of the night, when she throws caution to the wind and opens her sizeable songbook to perform what are known as “surprise songs.” Friday’s first, “Should’ve Said No,” was a shout-along kick to the curb from her self-titled debut that she sang and strummed with gusto; the second was “Better Man,” which Swift had written for her 2012 album “Red” and which was recorded by the country-pop act Little Big Town four years later.

Swift introduced the wistful, yet resolute ballad, which she performed solo at piano, by talking about its genesis, remarking, “It was so amazing to be recognized as a songwriter by another artist who wanted to record a song I had written.” The last few years of Swift’s career — which encompass not only the ambitious, dazzling stadium jaunt she’s currently on, but four brand-new albums and two re-recordings of her older albums (with another one on the way in July) — have all been further proving that point, establishing Swift as one of this generation’s leading singer-songwriters while also flaunting her pop star bona fides.

Taylor Swift performs at Gillette Stadium on Friday night.

The Eras Tour setlist is organized around Swift’s discography, which now spans 17 years and 10 albums (not counting the re-recordings, all of which have copious amounts of bonus material); each had its own mini-set with appropriate outfits and set pieces. It puts forth the importance of the album as a cohesive body of work while also giving live airings to songs from the four albums she’s released since her last Gillette run, which happened all the way back in 2018. (The festival that was supposed to hit Foxborough in 2020 to celebrate 2019′s “Lover,” the first album to be featured on Friday, was a lockdown casualty.)

Swift winkingly noted that she’s known for using her own life for material. But on 2020′s “Folklore,” which she said she began writing “two days into the pandemic,” she broadened her perspective, brainstorming songs from newly invented characters’ perspectives; cuts like the forlorn “Cardigan” and the pensive “The Last Great American Dynasty” revealed new dimensions in Swift’s craft, and even though part of those songs’ appeal on record lay in their homespun feel, their power was not lessened by their being blown up to stadium-sized proportions. She also performed the 10-minute version of “All Too Well,” a slow-burning recollection of a relationship told in images that was one of her best songs when it appeared in five-plus-minute form on “Red”; the lengthier version ratchets up the dread that comes with recalling the amassed slights of a curdling romance, making lyrics like “And you call me up again just to break me like a promise/So casually cruel in the name of being honest” even more devastating.

Those moments of catharsis were complemented by big-tent pop blowouts. Songs like the gleeful see-ya anthem “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and the defiantly upbeat “Shake It Off” allowed the massive crowd to explode in song and movement along with Swift and her throng of backup dancers. Others used the mammoth stage to staggering effect; the simmering “Lover” track “The Man,” which plays with notions of institutional sexism, was set in a colossal office building with Swift sporting a sequined blazer, while the serpentine “Reputation” cut “Look What You Made Me Do” had a matrix of Taylors, all wearing different outfits to signify her transformations over the last almost-two decades, thrashing on the screen behind her.

“Gillette Stadium, is the most joyful place on earth” -Taylor Swift just now 😎 pic.twitter.com/wMh4kPOy3b — Gil13tte Stadium (Taylor’s Version) (@GilletteStadium) May 20, 2023

Friday night’s 45-song set ended with a set spotlighting “Midnights,” the prickly, yet glossy album she released at the end of last year. Its lead single “Anti-Hero,” with its immediate, self-lacerating refrain “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem it’s me,” has become a rallying cry for those aware of their inner monster, and the response Friday reflected that. Other tracks, like the spite-selfie “Bejeweled” and the icy closer “Karma,” further showed her ability to bring together top-tier pop songwriting and rafter-reaching spectacle. In the end, the Eras Tour brought her career to a full circle — one filled with tens of thousands of people, and open to whatever might come next.

Swift is currently halfway through her five-night ‘Eras’ tour run at Wembley Stadium which kicked off on August 15 and will wrap up on August 20.

For last night’s surprise track, she treated fans to an acoustic rendition of ‘London Boy’, taken from her 2019 album ‘ Lover ‘. Swift introduced the track by saying: “The whole night I’ve just been thinking ‘God, I love the English.”

It’s the first time she’s played the capital-inspired song live since its release in 2019. In honour of the occasion, she also altered the lyrics to include the line “I enjoy playing Wembley.”

Other surprise songs from the night included ‘Dear John’ from 2010’s ‘ Speak Now ‘ and ‘Sad, Beautiful, Tragic’, from 2012’s ‘ Red ‘.

The London shows mark the first ‘Eras’ concerts since Swift’s three shows were cancelled in Vienna  last week following a  foiled terror attack plot .

Swift’s stage times in London had to be tweaked recently  in the wake of the incident. Wembley Stadium also  issued a statement warning ticketless fans that they cannot stand outside the venue  while the concert is taking place – a trend known as ‘Tay-gating’.

For the remaining shows , it is expected that the first support act will take to the stage at approximately 5pm BST, with  Paramore ’s set following at around 6pm. Swift’s estimated start time is 7pm, and she’ll play for over three-and-a-quarter hours. The following support acts will appear at the remaining shows,  Suki Waterhouse  (17),  Maisie Peters  (19) and  Raye (20). Sofia Isella and Holly Humberstone have already played support slots on the mini-residency.

In a five-star review of Swift’s  UK ‘Eras Tour’ opener in Edinburgh ,  NME  wrote: “Despite being an arena show, in a huge, cavernous venue, Swift and her fans have managed to cultivate a community.

“Strangers swap friendship bracelets, laugh and cry together, and embrace the tour’s in-jokes and lore (for example shouting “one, two, three, let’s go bitch” during ‘Delicate’). It’s the power of Swift, an artist who’s  inspired not only the renaming of a Scottish Loch , but also countless fans to come out and embrace being a part of the Eras family.

“With the ‘Eras Tour’, then, Swift’s managed to craft a marvel of a show that comes with a beating heart.”

Following this month’s London shows,  Swift will head back to North America this autumn  and  end her mammoth ‘Eras Tour’ in Vancouver, Canada in early December .

“This has definitely been the most exhausting, all-encompassing but most joyful, most rewarding, most wonderful thing that has ever wondered in my life, this tour,” Swift told the crowd as she marked her 100th ‘Eras Tour’ show in Liverpool in June.

In other news, the lawyer representing the main suspect in the alleged Vienna concert terror plot has  claimed that the accusations against their client have been exaggerated .

A third suspect was arrested by police  last week after allegedly being in contact with the main suspect. Swift has not yet commented on the incident.

taylor swift red tour gillette stadium setlist

Tonight is Taylor Swift's final night at London Wembley this August and we are beyond excited.

Back in May at one of Tay Tay's Paris dates Swifties noticed that the musician had cut several songs from her earlier Eras Tour roster to make way for fan favourites from her latest album The Tortured Poets Department . This saw songs such as The Archer and Long Live being replaced by newer bangers like The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and But Daddy, I Love Him . The Folklore and Evermore sections of the setlist were also combined along the way given the two are sister albums.

Swift began her sixth and most expansive tour back in March 2023. The global Eras tour is set to cover an impressive 151 total dates, with Taylor having already ticked off 52 US shows last year!

And now, after what feels like an eternity of waiting, Taylor has been blessing the rest of the world with a little slice of Swiftie heaven.

LONDON, UK — Taylor Swift is performing one more show in London to wrap up her stint in Europe on The Eras Tour .

She started the international leg May 9 in Paris after a two-month break from touring as she released her new album, "The Tortured Poets Department."

She's performing at London's Wembley Stadium Thursday, August 15; Friday, August 16; Saturday, August 17; Monday, August 19; and Tuesday, August 20. She will then take a break before beginning her second and final (?) U.S. and Canada leg October 18.

This is Swift's second stop in London on her Eras Tour, previously performing three shows at Wembley Stadium June 21, June 22 and June 23.

In addition to Paramore, other acts will also open each night at Wembley Stadium including Sofia Isella on Thursday, Holly Humberstone on Friday, Suki Waterhouse on Saturday, Maisie Peters on Monday and Raye on Tuesday.

Ed Sheeran joined Swift on stage on night one for a three-song mashup for one of her surprise songs.

She also sang "I Did Something Bad" on Night 6, the last song she hadn't performed live from Reputation on this tour. Fans are speculating she will release Reputation (Taylor's Version) during her last London show.

Unlike previous shows, fans without tickets won't be able to wait outside. This comes as organizers canceled Swift's three shows in Vienna, Austria amid an apparent plot to launch an attack on an event in the area. Tickets are being automatically refunded within the 10 business days following the concert, according to Swift's website .

Swift will finish The Eras Tour with her second round of U.S. dates beginning with three shows in Miami starting October 18. She'll officially end The Eras Tour with three shows in Vancouver, Canada with the final date on December 8.

Swift won't be touring for a few months of the NFL season, but likely won't be out of sight as she supports her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs' tight end Travis Kelce, during his games.

  • Piano: Mashup of "King of My Heart" from Reputation and "The Alchemy" from The Tortured Poets Department

With her tour resuming after the release of "The Tortured Poets Department" and the surprise double album release "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology," Swift has made several changes to the tour.

The Tortured Poets Department was added to the tour intro after 1989. There's also a new spot in the "Lover" house for the new album. Swift marked the start of her European leg in Paris with a new Lover bodysuit and a new jacket for "The Man" as well as several other outfits. See more changes to the tour HERE .

On this tour, Swift is performing two (or more) surprise songs at each tour date, and fans are tracking which songs and mashups are performed at each show. While on tour in Australia, Swift said she wouldn't perform a surprise song only once on tour as she had done previously and has since performed several mashups combining songs from different albums.

New Setlist Order

Swift has changed the order for The Era's Tour international dates, moving up Red right after Fearless instead of Speak Now.

Taylor Swift, who can decode you? Fans will try as they look for clues for 'Reputation TV'

LONDON —  Taylor Swift fans are doing their best to decipher their favorite poet.

As the "Tortured Poet" popstar goes into night four of a five night series of her famed Eras Tour at London's Wembley Stadium, one question is on every Swiftie's mind: When is " Reputation (Taylor's Version)" coming?

The album will be Swift's fifth project released as "Taylor's Version," an exercise Swift began to reclaim her artistic ownership  after the sale of her original master recordings in 2020 . The sale, Swift said at the time, "stripped me of my life's work." Her latest "Taylor's Version" release, "1989 (Taylor's Version)" came out October 2023.

While fans were served a new double album in April, they're back chanting for "more" in anticipation of a rerecorded "Reputation," which first debuted in November 2017. The album features high-fidelity dance beats and a streak of anger with songs like "Delicate" and "Ready For It" that resonate with fans today ( look no further than the soundtrack to Simone Biles' gold-medal-winning floor routine at the Paris Olympics ).

Easter-egging is practically Swift's birthright . But speculation has reached fever pitch (seriously, pack your ear plugs) as 92,000 fans (this author included) pack the London shows, which stretch until Tuesday and close out the European leg of the Eras Tour.

So what is Swift telling us?

Chanting "more" Join USA TODAY reporter Bryan West as he dishes all things Taylor Swift in a weekly email newsletter.

Is London night five the big night?

Fans know to pay attention to Swift's hand signals. This was a lesson learned in February when she accepted the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and made a special announcement of her upcoming album "The Tortured Poets Department." As she dropped the news, she flashed two fingers.

"Two"? What did "two" mean? The peace-sign sent the internet into a frenzy. And ultimately, the sleuthing was rewarded when Swift released a surprise double album at 2 a.m. in April. The lesson: She wasn't just a star on stage accepting an award. She was telling her fans something.

Now, Eras attendees are looking for more clues, with some posting on social media that Swift flashed a "2-0" instead of the classic "2-2" choreography while performing the bop "22" during the "Red" section of the show on Saturday night.

Ummm… what was that? 😳 pic.twitter.com/cOM3U8huFB — dani🪶🤍 (@DownBadDanii) August 18, 2024

Fans think the 2-0 may allude to Aug. 20, the final night of the Eras residency at Wembley, as the day the pop star announces "Reputation (Taylor's Version)."

That hand was rather serpentine...

The song "Karma" from the "Midnights" album marks the end of the over three-hour song fest that is the Eras Tour. As Swift popped a hip in a glittery body suit and feathery jacket per usual, fans noticed something serpentine about her bejeweled wave goodbye at the end of the night.

🚨| Taylor Swift seemingly doing a snake gesture while exiting the stage at today's show! #LondonTSTheErasTour pic.twitter.com/HGG2s3rTcn — The Eras Tour (@tswifterastour) August 17, 2024

The star seemingly made a snake-like hand gesture as she waved farewell at the end of the Aug 17. show. Was it a wonky wave by a tired woman after singing 44 songs ? Or a sign that she is the serpent queen fans want to think she is?

More clues: Taylor Swift finally sings long awaited 'Reputation' track

Another fan posted Wembley Stadium shining red and green lights into the London sky which seemingly resemble the scales of a snake.

wait wembley was doing lights tonight?? pic.twitter.com/1H6hy90kQD — ⸆⸉ 🖤 (@laavvenderhaaze) August 19, 2024

The snake is a heavily-employed metaphor by Swift, who dons a black body suit with red snakes on it during the "Reputation" portion of the Eras setlist. The reptile alludes to dishonesty and mistrust that marred Swift's reputation, and has been reclaimed through her music as a symbol of her biting back.

Whether or not she meant to make the snake-like gesture or flash calendar cues likely matters less than what the fans saw: her fangs are sunk deep and she's not going anywhere, even as her billion-dollar tour winds to an end. While "Tortured Poets" remains at the top of the charts, the arrival of "Reputation" will secure her spot at the height of the music industry for ensuing months.

Fans are dedicated nonetheless to labor of making it make sense, vying for insight into the inner world of their favorite mastermind. In some ways, going to the tour in this late stage is about figuring out what's next as much as it is celebrating Swift's 18 years of music.

In her titular song "The Tortured Poets Department" Swift asks "who can decode you?"

As the tour heads into the second to last night in London on Monday, the fans answer "we can."

Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce's relationship gets unique revelation

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's relationship is next level.

Andrew Korpan

Kansas City Chiefs' tight end Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift with hearts around them.

The relationship between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce is something special. Neither the “Cruel Summer “singer nor the Kansas City Chiefs tight end have ever been in a relationship like this.

Currently, Swift and Kelce are separated due to their separate obligations. Swift is wrapping up the European leg of the Eras Tour while Kelce's Chiefs are in the midst of their preseason.

Entertainment Tonight reports that despite the distance, the two's relationship is growing stronger . A source told Entertainment Tonight, “Their connection is unlike anything that they've ever experienced before.”

“Taylor and Travis always prioritize each other even when they are physically apart,” the source said. “They are still in constant communication, texting and FaceTiming each other.”

They added that Swift and Kelce are “very affectionate with each other even when they're apart.” An example of this is the things Kelce gifts to Swift. He recently went on a $72,000 shopping spree for Swift, showering her with luxury brand items.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's relationship timeline

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift after the Chiefs' Super Bowl LVIII victory.

In July 2023, Travis Kelce shot his shot with Taylor Swift, which ultimately led to their relationship. On his New Heights podcast, Kelce revealed he watched the Eras Tour and attempted to give Swift his number.

However, he was unable to. But luckily, she showed up to the Chiefs' Week 3 game against the Chicago Bears, which they won 41-10. This sparked rumors that the two had begun a romantic relationship.

Throughout the rest of the 2023 NFL season, Swift attended 12 more of the Chiefs' games. These included their biggest of the year against the San Fransisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Additionally, Kelce has gone to several of Swift's Eras Tour shows since they started dating. During the Chiefs' offseason, he attended a lot of the shows on the European leg.

Swift will soon have a couple of months off from the tour. Perhaps this will give her time to go to more of the Chiefs' games as they attempt to defend their Super Bowl title.

The Eras Tour

In the meantime, Swift will wind down the Eras Tour. She has two more dates left on the European leg of the Eras Tour on August 19 and 20 at Wembley Stadium in London, England.

After a couple of months off, Swift will resume the tour in October 2024. She will play a second North American leg that will sprawl across the United States and Canada.

The Eras Tour is Swift's largest concert tour to date. The 149-show itinerary is her most expansive journey across the globe. Throughout each three-hour show, Swift jam-packs her setlist with songs from her entire discography. Songs from almost all of her albums are sprinkled throughout the set.

A concert film was released to commemorate the tour. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was released on October 13, 2023, and was a smash hit. It grossed over $260 million at the box office during its run.

It was filmed across a few nights when Swift performed six shows at SoFi Stadium from August 3-9. An extended (Taylor's Version) cut of the concert film is streaming on Disney+.
