How to See the Statue of Liberty for Free

' src=

By Gabriela Hammond

Statue of Liberty from New York Harbor

Budgeting a trip to New York is no easy feat. Not only is it one of the world’s most expensive cities, but there’s so much to do, you could blow an entire vacation’s budget in just one day.

For that reason, finding free or cheap ways to check off your bucket list is often a step in planning any NYC trip. It’s not possible for every major site. Luckily, for the Statue of Liberty , there are quite a few options.

Seeing Lady Liberty for free does mean only getting to take a photo of her. There’s no free option for visiting Liberty Island and physically going inside the statue.

I’m going to share with you all of the ways that you can see the statue — 100% free — and discuss some of the common questions that people have about spending money at the statue.

1. Staten Island Ferry

Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry serves as a commuter ferry between Manhattan and Staten Island. It makes dozens of trips a day, leaving every 20-30 minutes. Since the service is completely free, this is a great option for viewing the Statue of Liberty up close. The ferry route brings you directly across New York Harbor and right by the statue and Ellis Island.

  • Of all the free options, the ferry has the best and closest view of the statue.
  • You’ll get other great views of Brooklyn and Manhattan on the ride, too.
  • You must stick to the ferry schedule.
  • If you don’t time your exit correctly, you may end up stuck on Staten Island for an extra half hour while you wait for the next boat.

2. Battery Park

Battery Park, New York

At the very most southern edge of Manhattan is Battery Park – an entirely man made public park. The 25 acre area is home to various monuments, greenery and a nice view of the Statue of Liberty. Getting to the park is fairly easy and it’s also a great spot to watch the sun set.

  • There’s no need to stick to a schedule, you can visit whenever.
  • Great for people who don’t like boats or heights.
  • Since the statue is facing Brooklyn, the view from the park isn’t the best. It’s not very close either.

3. Governors Island

Governors Island

One of my favorite places to visit in New York is Governors Island . It’s open every year from May through October and is great for walking, biking and getting away from the hustle of the city.

The ferry is typically a mere $3.00. But if you want to go for free, passengers can take the ferry free-of-charge on both Saturday and Sunday before noon. Once there, you can explore the island and walk to the southern edge for a wonderful view of the statue.

  • Pretty close view of the statue, plus you’ll be looking at her from the best side.
  • The island itself is a lot of fun and a great place to spend the day.
  • The timing isn’t very flexible as you can only visit during certain months of the year and you have to catch the ferry in the morning, during the weekend, if you want it to be free.
  • The ferry and the island are often crowded on the weekends, especially in the summer. Governors Island is very popular amongst locals.

4. Liberty State Park

Liberty State Park, NJ

Right in the heart of North Jersey is Liberty State Park, home to over 1,000 acres of greenery, river walkways and a spectacular view of Manhattan. Standing at the edge of New York harbor, you can see the Statue of Liberty only a mile away. The park is also home to a number of other sites, including a 9/11 memorial, a historic railroad terminal and a nature center.

  • This is one of the closest views you can get from the places on this list.
  • The park is full of other fun things to enjoy while you’re there.
  • Since the statue is facing Brooklyn, the view that you get is essentially just the back of her.
  • Assuming you’re staying in New York, getting to the park is pretty time consuming and requires going quite a bit out of your way.

5. The Brooklyn Bridge and the High Line

View_of_Statue_of_Liberty_down_10th_Avenue_from_the_High_Line

While the Brooklyn Bridge and The High Line are two completely different spaces, they’re both great places to visit that are also free and feature views of the Statue of Liberty from afar.

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is a must do when you visit the city. This architectural landmark is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. No matter which side you walk from, you’ll be able to see the Statue of Liberty out in New York harbor for about 70% of the walk.

The High Line is one of the city’s newer attractions, but certainly one of the most popular. It stretches three miles from 34th Street – Hudson Yards, all the way down to Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District. If you go on at the 14th street entrance, you’ll find a lovely corner with shady trees and benches. Looking south from that corner you can see the statue very faintly out in the distance.

  • Both the Brooklyn Bridge and the High Line are fun places to explore on their own.
  • The view from both is extremely faint as you’re looking out at the statue from quite a distance.

Are there free tours to the Statue of Liberty?

liberty cruise free

No. Unfortunately, you won’t find any free guided tours to the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island. It’s impossible to get to the island for free so anyone advertising a free tour isn’t legit.

However, there is multi-lingual audio tour on both islands. It’s completely free with your ticket.

Is the pedestal free?

Statue of Liberty pedestal

The Statue of Liberty pedestal is actually an upgrade to your Statue of Liberty ticket. So, technically, if you already have a general admission ticket, you can upgrade to a pedestal ticket for free. There’s no extra cost for visiting the pedestal.

Keep in mind, there is a limit to the amount of pedestal tickets sold per day. So while you might not have to cough up any extra money, you do have to plan ahead slightly.

If you’re interested in visiting the pedestal, consider letting a pro handle the planning details and join a Statue of Liberty tour . It might not be free but the experience is certainly worth the extra price.

Is Ellis Island free?

Ellis Island

Yes and no. Admission to Ellis Island is included in your Statue of Liberty ferry ticket, no matter which type you purchase. So, in many ways it feels free. But you can’t get there without purchasing a ticket in the first place.

Technically, both islands are free admission. What you are actually paying for in your ticket is the price of the ferry.

Is there a free ferry to the Statue of Liberty?

Statue Cruises Ferry

Nope. The only way to get to Liberty & Ellis Island is to pay to ride a Statue Cruises ferry . No other company has permission to dock on either island.

Guide tip: Be careful what you purchase when you’re looking for a ferry ticket. Many companies advertise visiting the statue when really they just circle around it. Make sure you’re getting what you pay for. If you want to step foot on Liberty Island, you must buy through Statue Cruises or a reputable tour company that handles the logistics of getting tickets from Statue Cruises.

Free or not, seeing the Statue of Liberty is truly priceless

Complete your New York City experience with an exhilarating boat trip.

The Best Statue of Liberty Cruises

Enjoy the sea air while you take in stunning New York City views.

The best view of New York might not be in the city itself, but from the harbor looking back at the skyline. Sightseeing cruises are a wonderful reminder that Manhattan is, in fact, an island, and getting out on the water offers a breezy cruise in addition to a fresh vantage point.

With a cold drink in hand, you'll see not just the Statue of Liberty , but also other top city landmarks from the Brooklyn Bridge to One World Trade Center. These boat tours allow visitors to zoom out and get a new perspective, then return to Manhattan refreshed by the wind, water, light and sheer size of the skyline.

There are different boat experiences to match every type of traveler, and here are some of the best.

Best Overall: Statue City Cruises

Statue City Cruises boat at Ellis Island with New York City buildings in the background.

Price: From $24.50

Duration: At your own pace, with ferries departing every 25 to 30 minutes

Standout perk: Admission to the grounds of Liberty Island and Ellis Island are included in this sightseeing cruise and ferry service to Lady Liberty.

The best overall value and experience belongs to Statue City Cruises, which combines the scenery of a sightseeing cruise with the in-depth experience of an attraction tour. Priority entry included with the ticket saves time at the departure point at The Battery . On board the round-trip ferry service, visitors will experience all the sweeping views of a New York Harbor cruise, including skyscrapers of the Financial District and beyond.

The first stop is Liberty Island, home to the Statue of Liberty. Audio tours in a dozen languages are available so you can go at your own pace. Those interested can continue via boat service to Ellis Island, home to the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, which contains several fascinating exhibits and the chance to look up your ancestors. Explore at your leisure, then utilize the ferry service back to lower Manhattan.

Local tip: Choose a time as early as possible in the morning for this experience. Ferry service and crowds at Lady Liberty grow throughout the day and swell on weekends; a weekday morning is the best choice.

Best for Adults: Manhattan by Sail's Day Sail – Shearwater

Price: From $60 for adults

Duration: 90 minutes

Standout perk: This cruise provides a true sailing experience on a classic schooner.

Don't be surprised to bump into New Yorkers on the Shearwater, a schooner with tall sails that entices even jaded Manhattanites to go for a ride. Climb aboard this "Gatsby"-era boat, with capacity for 48 people, from the dock at North Cove Marina at Brookfield Place and set out on a sail down the Hudson River and into the New York Harbor. Trade city crowds for the open water with this cruise, complete with a cash bar, that offers up-close views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Manhattan skyline.

This experience, conveniently available at different times throughout the day, is a match for adults seeking a more sophisticated sail – think: hip vibe, ample bar, music and an emphasis on service. Several upgrades are available, including sails that offer a wine tasting or live jazz on board. Every sailing offers the chance to snap your photograph with Lady Liberty herself, though you won't be disembarking at Liberty Island.

Local tip: Adults seeking a romantic cruise may want to opt for the Sunset Sail on the Shearwater Classic Schooner.

Best for Families: Circle Line's Liberty Super Express Downtown

Aerial of Circle Line's Liberty Super Express Downtown cruise.

Courtesy of Circle Line

Price: From $29

Duration: 50 minutes

Standout perk: Maximize time with this express cruise, featuring convenient, regular departures.

Families with limited time (or kids with limited attention spans) may appreciate a quick express cruise option. This fast and friendly tour, at just 50 minutes, is a speedy way to get the experience of a boat cruise without it taking a bite out of your day. Hop aboard a boat with Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises – the sister company to New York Water Taxi – and choose between either the open air of the top deck or the temperature-controlled cabin. On a sunny day, the outdoor deck with its sea breeze is the place to be as the boat sails past the Statue of Liberty.

Get unobstructed views of Lady Liberty and snap some family photographs before returning to Pier 16 in the South Street Seaport. Quick, efficient and featuring live narration from a guide, this sightseeing ride is excellent value packed into a short time span.

Local tip: Kids interested in ships may want to visit the South Street Seaport Museum, near the cruise departure point, to see model ships and more.

Best Budget: Staten Island Ferry

The red Staten Island Ferry with the Statue of Liberty in the background.

Courtesy of SIFerry.com

Price: Free

Duration: 25 minutes each way

Standout perk: Get out on the water to see the Statue of Liberty without paying a cent.

The best budget sightseeing cruise isn't a cruise at all, but rather a free mode of local transportation: the Staten Island Ferry. While many of even the most basic harbor cruises start at about $20, this ferry offers a completely free, ticketless cruise in the New York Harbor, bypassing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island along the way. With service every 30 minutes and no reservations or tickets required, the ferry is not only a steal price-wise, but also a convenient option for travelers who don't want to be tied down to a ticketed departure time.

Stand out on deck and admire views of Lady Liberty during this journey that crosses about 5 miles from Whitehall Street at the tip of lower Manhattan to St. George on Staten Island. The only drawback is that you must depart the ferry in Staten Island and reboard for the trip back to Manhattan – a small "price" to pay for a free boat ride in NYC.

Local tip: Visitors will want to avoid rush hour; these commuter boats can be crowded. Choose a time outside commuting rush hour to maximize the peaceful experience.

Best Luxury: Classic Harbor Line's Statue and Skyline Sightseeing Cruise

Classic Harbor Line ship in front of Statue of Liberty.

Courtesy of Classic Harbor Line

Price: From $64 for adults

Duration: 1.5 hours

Standout perk: This intimate cruise on a 1920s-inspired yacht comes with one complimentary drink included.

Board a yacht at Pier 62 in Chelsea for a polished cruise including views of the New York Harbor's top landmark: the Statue of Liberty. Set sail in style aboard a yacht inspired by the roaring '20s, complete with a solarium and open-air decks as well as a climate-controlled cabin. Cruise down the west side of Manhattan and check out views of The Battery, the Financial District, Governor's Island and more.

Of all the available New York City harbor cruises, guests often praise this one for the quality of the staff running the Classic Harbor Line cruises. With an emphasis on service, an intimate group with a maximum of 80 passengers and an onboard stocked bar, this cruise offers a sophisticated option for seeing Lady Liberty.

Local tip: This cruise departs from Pier 62, which is home to a riverfront carousel for kids and a pretty stretch of Hudson River Park. Stop into Chelsea Market for some picnic supplies and relax in the park before your cruise.

Best Sunset Cruise: Circle Line's Harbor Lights

Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise at night with New York City buildings in the background.

Price: From $45

Duration: 2 hours

Standout perk: Watch the skyscrapers of the Manhattan skyline flicker to life.

Circle Line offers a variety of cruises with different itineraries. One of the most popular is the Harbor Lights tour, a cruise departing from Midtown Manhattan that includes golden sunset views and a photo stop at the Statue of Liberty. See NYC landmarks like Hudson Yards, Chelsea Piers and One World Trade Center before cruising out into the New York Harbor. You'll get to learn about New York from onboard narration as the itinerary continues past Liberty Island and beneath the Brooklyn Bridge.

While the sun sets and the Manhattan skyscrapers flash to life, relax on the outdoor deck space and visit the onboard bar to purchase beer, wine, cocktails and light snacks. A temperature-controlled cabin is available for hot days. Wi-Fi is free on board and allows for easy posting of sunset photos.

Local tip: This cruise departs from Pier 83 in Midtown Manhattan. Arrive early to visit the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at neighboring Pier 86.

How to See the Statue of Liberty for Free

liberty cruise free

As a New York City tour guide, I'm always being asked about the best ways to see this historic monument without paying too much money.

I get the question so often that I figured it would probably make sense to create this helpful guide to the best free viewing spots for Lady Liberty.

This post lists the 4 best places or ways to get a view of the Statue of Liberty for free, most notably the Staten Island Ferry.

To be clear, there is only one ferry, run by Statue Cruises, that lets you disembark on Liberty Island to actually visit the Statue of Liberty.

However, this one option is not free, and we have a post explaining how to reach Liberty and Ellis Islands .

For this post, I have focused on the options from ferries or land that allow you to get very close to Lady Liberty, if not up close and personal.

I've also included a section detailing what I believe to be the absolute best ways to see this stunning landmark .

And, in the video below, Canden, a tour guide with us, Free Tours by Foot NYC , summarizes these options.

STATEN ISLAND FERRY

This free commuter ferry travels very close to the Statue of Liberty.

You will want to have your camera out and ready to go, as the ferry passes Lady Liberty at a fairly fast speed.

Still, without a doubt, this is the best view of the Statue of Liberty you can get for free.

In fact, riding the Staten Island Ferry is one of the very best things you can do for free in NYC .

And, in this video, Canden explains how to plan your ride on this ferry, including where to sit to get that great photo.

In addition to views of Lady Liberty, you can also expect to see excellent views of the Manhattan skyline, Governors Island , Brooklyn Heights , and more.

Make sure to head for the right side of the boat if you want to see the statue while traveling from Manhattan.

To learn more, check out our post on the Staten Island Ferry .

Also, be sure to download our free Staten Island Ferry audio tour to accompany you on the cruise.

Take The NYC Ferry

This commuter ferry connects the five boroughs and has a route from Midtown West to Staten Island.

The ferry passes the Statue of Liberty, slightly closer than the Staten Island Ferry does.

Tickets are $4 one way (so it's not exactly free - but come on!). See the schedule here .

If you are on the west side of Manhattan (near West 39th Street) or Battery Park City, this ferry is a great option to see Lady Liberty.

liberty cruise free

Like the Staten Island Ferry, it also ends at St. George Terminal on Staten Island.

If you want to do more sightseeing in Lower Manhattan, just take the free Statue of Liberty ferry back to Battery Park City!

For information on how to ride this ferry throughout NYC, read here .

BATTERY PARK

This park is at the tip of Lower Manhattan and has expansive vistas of the New York harbor including a view of the Statue of Liberty.

You can walk along the waterfront or sit on one of the benches that look out on the water.

Our guide to Battery Park lists other things you can see and do in the park.

For those wanting a closer look, Battery Park serves as the starting point for the Staten Island Ferry . While the ferry brings you closer to the statue, the vistas from Battery Park capture it in a larger setting that includes the harbor.

Apart from these factors, Battery Park has more to offer. There are guided tours that share the story of not just the Statue of Liberty but also other important landmarks you can see from the park.

While the view might require you to zoom in on your camera for the best Statue of Liberty photos, it won't cost a thing!

TIP: Our pay-what-you-wish Lower Manhattan Tour visits Battery Park where your guide will point out the Statue of Liberty in the distance and tell you about the statue’s history.

New York Walking Tours

If you can’t make our live tour, you can try our Lower Manhattan Audio Tour which can be taken at any time of the day or night.

Here is a sample.

GOVERNORS ISLAND

Governors Island is a small island in the East River less than one mile from Lower Manhattan.

Its location affords visitors spectacular views of the Statue of Liberty.

Statue of Liberty from Governors Island

For unparalleled views of the Statue of Liberty, New York harbor, and the city skyline, head to Outlook Hill, which is 70 feet tall and accessible via a winding path.

This is one of the best spots for a Statue of Liberty view point from land, so if you're not interested in a cruise or other options, we recommend taking the short ferry ride over!

Our post on Governors Island details how to get there, when to visit, and what activities exist.

liberty cruise free

LIBERTY STATE PARK

This waterfront park in New Jersey is just across the river from Lower Manhattan.

This park offers the closest free view of the Statue of Liberty from the land.

Although the park doesn't provide a full view of the Statue of Liberty's face, its aesthetic attractions and landscapes make your visit worthwhile.

Statue of Liberty from Liberty State Park

You can get there easily by public transportation. There is a ferry that departs from Lower Manhattan.

Our post on how to ride NYC ferries includes information on this ferry.

You can also take the PATH train (New Jersey’s version of the subway) from Manhattan, followed by a light-rail ride and a short walk to the park.

If you have a pay-as-you-go MetroCard , you can use your card on the PATH system.

OTHER OPTIONS

This section lists ways to get great views of Lady Liberty that are not free, but that we believe are worth the money.

Some of these options may already be on your list of things you want to do in NYC.

Most of these options are included for free when you purchase certain NYC tourist concession passes .

Take a Sightseeing Cruise

There are numerous sightseeing cruises you can take in NYC, including those that offer very good, if not excellent, views of the Statue of Liberty.

For example, Circle Line’s Liberty Cruise takes you past the Statue of Liberty, as well as Ellis Island, and the World Trade Center.

These services do not stop at the island, but they get as close as possible without actually arriving at the docks. This means you'll get a close view without having to crane your neck upward!

In addition to the up-close views, the cruise features entertaining commentary about these sights.

If you're looking for the closest unobstructed view to get excellent Statue of Liberty photos, this is one of the best options available in NYC.

This Cruise is included for free with several tourist passes and the Big Bus Tours Adventure Pass .

Use the page below to find more information about every sightseeing cruise that will take you close to the Statue of Liberty.

Go to the One World Observatory Observation Deck

The observation deck at One World Observatory (the ‘Freedom Tower’) offers breathtaking views of New York Harbor, including the Statue of Liberty.

Statue of Liberty from One World Observatory

Though you do have to buy tickets (and they aren’t cheap), a visit to One World Observatory is an unforgettable experience.

It might seem far from here, but this view is actually closer than what you'll find at other observation decks in New York City. That said, if you'd rather have a closer look, you might want to consider another viewpoint such as Battery Park or the Staten Island Ferry.

Read our post on One World Observatory to find out about getting tickets, the best times to visit, and other helpful tips.

Purchase a Tourist Attraction Concession Pass

If any of the above activities are of interest to you, consider getting an NYC tourist concession pass to save money.

In addition to covering the price of a ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty, tourist passes also often include the following activities and attractions at no extra cost:

  • Statue of Liberty Tall Ship Cruise
  • Hop-on-Hop-off Bus Tour
  • Brooklyn Bridge Bike Tour
  • 9/11 Memorial & Museum
  • Rockefeller Center Tour
  • One World Observatory
  • Empire State Building
  • Circle Line Cruises
  • Top of the Rock

Depending on which pass you choose and how you use it, you could save anywhere from 20% - 50% off ticket prices for some of the most popular NYC attractions, including the activities listed above.

While the basic ferry ticket will allow you to see the monument up close from the outside, pedestal and crown tickets will give you the opportunity to experience the view from the Statue of Liberty.

All ticket options provide free audio tours of both the Liberty and Ellis Islands. The view from Liberty Island is exceptional, and you'll have to look up to take in the full grandeur of the statue, but you can also enjoy a stunning view of the New York City skyline.

This vantage point will ensure you get an excellent picture of the Statue of Liberty, but it's worth noting that you'll have to point your camera upward.

For more details, read our post on New York tourist attraction concession passes .

Take a Helicopter Tour

Given the steep price of these tours, we don’t recommend you take one just to get a view of the Statue of Liberty!

But if you are already considering a helicopter tour of NYC, the Statue of Liberty is one of the highlights of the awesome aerial views you will get from the sky.

Taking a helicopter ride offers an excellent Statue of Liberty view point, but if you're looking for a closer view from in front of the monument, a cruise is still the better option.

For more information, see our post on  helicopter tours of New York City .

HONORABLE MENTIONS

  • Brooklyn Bridge

From the Brooklyn Bridge, one gets an incredible 360-degree view of New York City.

Looking south over the water, you can see the Statue of Liberty off in the distance.

Statue of Liberty from Brooklyn Bridge

This is another free way to enjoy the Statue of Liberty, but the visibility might not always be ideal. The Brooklyn Bridge will be closer than the One World Observatory, but not as close as Battery Park.

See our guide to  walking the Brooklyn Bridge  or download our GPS-enabled Audio Tour of the Brooklyn Bridge .

Just north of the Overlook, at the “10th Avenue Square”, look south out onto the Hudson River.

This vantage point is easily overlooked, but for those looking to save money, it's a cost-free way to see the iconic statue. We wouldn't recommend this location for first timers, but rather as a test to see if you can spot the monument.

Though Lady Liberty will look very small, the view makes for a nice and easily instagramable photo.

See our self-guided tour of the High Line for a map of the park.

On the weekends you can ride this ferry for free from Wall Street to the Ikea store in Brooklyn and back again.

The ride is relatively short, but the views are outstanding.

View of Statue of Liberty from the Ikea Ferry

Not only will you see the Statue of Liberty, but you will also see the Brooklyn Bridge nearby and the skyline of Lower Manhattan.

Once referred to as the East River Ferry, this system covers multiple paths and some get closer to the monument than others, so your experience may vary depending on your destination.

To find out more about the Ikea ferry, read our guide to NYC ferries .

Best Spots for Statue of Liberty Photos

Okay, so you know all the free ways to see Lady Liberty now, but which one of these options is the best? Well, the best I can do is to give you my opinion based on which photo op offers the best shots.

Best Free Photo Spots

  • Battery Park
  • Staten Island Ferry

Best Cheap Photo Spots

  • Governor's Island
  • Liberty State Park
  • NYC Ferry/IKEA Ferry

Best Paid Photo Spots

  • Sightseeing Cruise
  • Statue of Liberty Ferry
  • Helicopter Tour

Personally, I think the best bang for your buck is going to be a sightseeing cruise, as they can usually get very close to the Statue of Liberty without actually landing there.

What that means is that you'll enjoy very nice shots from the front of the statue which don't require you to angle your camera upward, downward, or zoom in too far.

That said, both Governor's Island and Battery Park are really good alternatives that won't cost more than $5!

The 12 Best Statue of Liberty Cruises

The 12 Best Statue of Liberty Cruises

There are multiple ways for you to see the Statue of Liberty in New York. Our personal favorite is seeing the Statue of Liberty from the water! That’s why, in this article, we’d like to present the 12 best Statue of Liberty Cruises.

Our Favorite Statue of Liberty Cruises

First of all, let us reiterate that the only way to set foot on Liberty Island is by taking the ferry. This can be done with an appropriate ticket or within a guided tour. Any other Statue of Liberty Cruise will be  cruising around the Statue of Liberty . They may make a stop on the water, but they do not stop at the island . For us, however, cruises around the Statue of Liberty are the perfect way of combining panoramic scenes of Manhattan’s skyline with a close view of the Statue of Liberty. If you do want to visit the island, be sure to be informed about all the different ticket types in advance.

There are also a bunch of private tours that are offered to explore the Statue of Liberty. Even though the reviews are excellent, we do not believe a private tour is necessary. A guided tour in a small group is just as good and much more affordable.

Should you want to climb all the way to the top, into the crown of the Statue of Liberty , you would need a different ticket. Those tickets are limited and sell out many weeks in advance, so be sure to secure your tickets.

New York Liberty-Connecticut Sun free livestream: How to watch WNBA game, TV, time

  • Updated: Jun. 08, 2024, 8:03 a.m. |
  • Published: Jun. 08, 2024, 8:02 a.m.

Reigning WNBA MVP Stewart re-signed with the Liberty, the team announced Monday, Feb. 26, 2024. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II, File) AP

The New York Liberty play against the Connecticut Sun today at 12 p.m. CT on ABC. Fans can watch this exciting WNBA game for free online by using the free trials offered by DirecTV Stream and Fubo TV. If those streaming methods have already been used, then Sling offers a first month discount to new users.

The Sun enter today’s WNBA game with an undefeated 9-0 record, making them the best team in the league thus far.

Connecticut has incredible roster depth, as five of their players average double digit points per game. The leader of the team’s offense has been forward DeWanna Bonner, who is currently averaging more than 19 points per game. She has been helped offensively by forward Alyssa Thomas, who leads the team in assists and rebounds. So, these two players have been imperative to Connecticut’s hot start.

The Sun won their most recent game 76-59 over the Washington Mystics and Bonner scored a team-high 20 points in the victory. This game showcases Connecticut’s great defense, in addition to their offensive prowess. The Sun have yet to concede more than 84 points in a game this year, which will be tested against a highly talented Liberty squad.

New York lost in the WNBA Finals last year, and they are looking to avenge that loss by winning a championship this season. The Liberty have started out with a 9-2 record, making them the second-best team in the WNBA.

The Liberty’s great start can be attributed to last year’s WNBA regular season MVP Breanna Stewart. Currently, she leads the team in points and rebounds. She is nearly averaging a double-double this year, as she is just slightly under 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. These are highly impressive numbers and showcases Stewart’s exceptional play. So, she will be a key player to watch during today’s game.

Fans can watch this WNBA game for free online by using the free trials offered by DirecTV Stream and Fubo TV. Alternatively, Sling is a cheaper option for consumers.

Liberty survive scare from winless Mystics for seventh straight victory

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Even if they had their full starting lineup, the end of a five-games-in-eight-days stretch would’ve been difficult for the Liberty.

But then take out point guard Courtney Vandersloot for the past three games due to personal reasons, and that — on top of Commissioner’s Cup implications — added another layer of complexity.

One day after what Sabrina Ionescu described as a “statement” win against the previously undefeated Sun , the Liberty avoided getting upset by the winless Washington Mystics, taking a 93-88 victory Sunday behind 29 points from Jonquel Jones and a variety of contributions from everyone else tasked with filling Vandersloot’s void.

This was less about a convincing victory and more about survival.

Liberty forward Jonquel Jones (35) shoots over Washington Mystics forward Emily Engstler (21) and guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (32) in the first half at Barclays Center on Sunday.

It took until late in the fourth quarter for the Liberty to pull away — until Jade Melbourne’s chance to tie bounced off the rim in the final seconds and they hit enough free throws.

When the win was settled, the Liberty had swept their way through the Commissioner’s Cup and won their seventh consecutive game with a WNBA Finals rematch against the Aces looming Saturday.

Sabrina Ionescu added 18 points, while Leonie Fiebich, who has inherited an expanded role amid Vandersloot’s absence, added 12.

“We’re playing for her,” Ionescu said. “She’s a part of this team. She anchors us. We’re not the same without her, and I hope she knows, I know she knows and feels, that every time we’re stepping out on the floor, everything that we’re doing, she’s right there with us.”

It’s unclear when Vandersloot will return, and that forced adjustments again Sunday.

Ionescu orchestrated the offense. Breanna Stewart orchestrated the offense. Betnijah Laney-Hamtilon orchestrated the offense. They’re all filling different positions than usual, Stewart said, while trying to adjust on the fly without practice time.

In Year 2 of the superteam, cohesion — with the entire starting lineup returning — was the prominent advantage the Liberty possessed, but they still needed to construct the bench.

Liberty forward Breanna Stewart (30) shoots over Washington Mystics forward Aaliyah Edwards on Sunday.

To figure out the rotations. To get Fiebich and Kennedy Burke and Kayla Thornton and Ivana Dojkic to mesh with the starters.

Recently, Fiebich has started to emerge, and when the Mystics kept finding a way to respond in the second half, Fiebich hit three critical 3-pointers to help the Liberty keep pace.

She checked in for Thornton with 4:38 left in the third and added nine points, three rebounds and an assist while spending the remainder of the afternoon on the court.

“I think at this point, I’ve played more games than practiced,” Fiebich said. “It’s hard to come in and don’t get any time, like live action, in practices with my teammates, so I think the more minutes I get, the more time on the court I get, the more comfortable I feel out there.”

Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu (20) drives past Washington Mystics guard Karlie Samuelson on Sunday.

Jones paced the Liberty with 15 points in the opening half, and on one sequence she swatted a shot and ended up with possession at the other end, grabbing her own missed layup, drawing a foul and sinking both free throws.

She continued to serve as the focal point of the Liberty’s offense across the final 20 minutes, but Fiebich and others started to contribute.

Still, the Mystics kept within striking distance. There were seven lead changes and five ties across the final two quarters.

Liberty forward Kennedy Burke (2) shoots over Washington Mystics center Stefanie Dolson on Sunday.

Ionescu was trapped in the corner after an inbounds in the final minute and managed to bounce a pass and avoid a 10-second violation. Jones, with the Liberty leading by one, converted a layup to end the sequence.

“I think we have veterans and it shows late, that people understand the moment,” Jones said. “And I think we lock in and we take it to another level.”

With Sunday’s win, the Liberty aced the most complicated stretch of their early-season slate.

They did more than half of it without Vandersloot. And now, after five days off, the Aces are waiting.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

liberty cruise free

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

liberty cruise free

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

liberty cruise free

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

liberty cruise free

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

liberty cruise free

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

liberty cruise free

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

You will also have a chance to do some light shopping and there will be time to relax aboard the ship in the evenings. One of the highlights of your time in Moscow is a visit to  Red Square  and the  Kremlin . You will also visit one of the Kremlin's famous cathedrals. The Kremlin as we know it today was rebuilt as a stone structure during the beginning of the 14th century but the actual site has been inhabited and used as a fortified city wall for centuries before this period. The Kremlin is truly a fascinating structure - at the same time it is an ancient tower, the city's former military fortification, a palace and the workplace of the Russian President. The Kremlin is the center of Russia's political life and State power and has been home to Tsars, General Secretaries of the Soviet Union and Russian Presidents.

Moscow  is Russia's political and financial capital as well as a major world class cultural center. The city includes many must see attractions from the Kremlin and Red Square to the Assumption Cathedral. Moscow is the largest city in Europe. It is unique in that it blends the ancient with the modern. See medieval structures among modern office buildings, walk down crooked old city streets opening up to wide, busy boulevards. It is a fantastic city and truly a site that shouldn't be missed.

Uglich : You will be taken on a walking city tour with visit to the  Kremlin , the  Church of St. Demitrius on the Blood  and the  Transfiguration cathedral .

Uglich  was founded in 1148 as a small princedom bordering on Muscovy and is one of the most beloved towns in Old Russia. The view of the town as you approach it from the Volga River is breathtaking with the Cathedral of the Resurrection and St. John's Church rising on the horizon. The history of the town is fascinating; At the end of the 16th century, Maria Nagaya, seventh wife of Ivan the Terrible, lived in honorary exile at the Kremlin in Uglich. It was here in her garden that the 10 year old Prince Dmitry of the Rurik Dynasty, heir to the Russian throne was murdered by Boris Godunov who wanted to seize power for himself. On the spot of his death, the Church of St. Demitrius of the Blood was built and still stands today. The death of Prince Dmitri brought on the start of the Time of Troubles, a dynastic and political crises and one of the most tumultuous periods in Russian history which ended 15 years later after the election of a new Tsar, Mikhail Romanov (the first Tsar of the Romanov Dynasty). Inside the Kremlin the oldest building in Uglich, the Palace of Tsarevich Dmitry also stands. During your time in Uglich you will learn more about the town's past and walk along the paths of Russian history.

Arrival in the ancient village of  Goritsy . Tour of the  St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery  and the  Museum of Icons .

Goritsy  is a tiny settlement 7 kilometers from the St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery. The remains of the Nunnery of the Resurrection that sits on the banks of the Sheksna River can be visited and is within a quarter of a mile of where the ship stops. Goritsy is definitely a site to see for anyone with an interest in Russian history. St. Cyril on the White Lake was founded in 1397 by Kirill Belosersky on the shore of Lake Siverskoye. The monastery had wide trade in the 15th to 17th centuries and was used as a fortress to protect Russia's nobility during the Times of Troubles.

After the tour you will return to your ship and set sail in the direction of St. Petersburg along the Volga Baltic Canal. The Volga Baltic Canal is a series of canals and rivers that connect the Volga river to the Baltic Sea.

You'll cruise along Europe's second largest lake,  Lake Onega  and arrive on the island of  Kizhi . Here you will visit a fascinating open-air museum containing numerous examples of elaborate Russian, wooden architecture.

Kizhi Island : Via the Volga Baltic Canal, our cruise takes us to the tiny island of Kizhi, located at the northern end of Lake Onega. The island is renowned for its open-air  Museum of Architecture , which is assembled from over 80 monuments of wooden architecture from various areas of the country and restored to form a glimpse of the past. The most impressive site on the island is the  Church of the Transfiguration or Preobrazhenskaya  (the church of twenty-two wooden domes). This masterpiece of architecture, featuring five tiers of 22 domes, was built in 1714 without the use of a single nail, only an axe and pine trees. The church magically changes color as the day grows old, it is certainly one of the most interesting things you will see during your time in Russia.

A stop in the village of  Mandrogui . Enjoy walking around this traditional Russian village in its beautiful setting and spend a day of rest, relaxation and fun. We will have a fantastic barbeque picnic on the banks of the river featuring one of Russia's favorite specialties - shashlik (meat shish kebab prepared on an outdoor fire). You will love it!

Mandrogui  is really more of a living museum than a live-in village. It features a collection of old wooden houses and is geared towards showing visitors what a traditional Russian village resembled in the past. One of the features here is the Vodka Museum, which contains thousands of different brands and types of Russia's favorite pastime.

The Hermitage

Arrival in the imperial capital of Russia -  St. Petersburg . Your time in St. Petersburg will begin with a  Panoramic City Tour . This tour is the best way to get acquainted with all of the city's major highlights. Our professional guide will take you down  Nevsky Prospect , St. Petersburg's most famous and vibrant thoroughfare. There you will see some of the city's most interesting architectural monuments including the Kazan Cathedral (exterior) and the Winter Palace. You will see the  Peter and Paul Fortress  (interior) - a symbol of St. Petersburg and also the oldest building in the city.

One of the highlights of your entire cruise will be a visit to the  Hermitage , Russia's premier museum containing one of the largest art collections in the world. The museum consists of five historical buildings including the Winter Palace - the residence of the Russian Tsars. The museum contains over 3 million pieces of art with dates ranging from high antiquity to the present day. Among the Hermitage's treasures are artworks by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, Rubens and many others.

On the last day of your cruise you will say goodbye to Russia, your ship's crew and the many new friends we are sure you will have met during your time with us. We are sure that your memories of the trip will last a lifetime and we look forward to welcoming you to Russia sometime in the future. Our driver will meet you at the ship and take you to the airport to see you off (transfer is optional).

St. Petersburg  is Russia's second largest and second most important city - the Northern capital of the country, Russia's cultural center, and considered the world's 'Northern Venice' due to its extensive system of canals and islands. Walk along Nevsky Prospect and experience the grandeur of pre-revolutionary imperial Russia. Pass palaces from the past and gaze at the famous embankment of the Neva River with its numerous bridges and striking architecture. St. Petersburg is also home to Russia's largest and busiest port and with its many world class theaters and museums has a very high level of cultural life.
