“The expansion of Orlando health Virtual Visit represents another expansion of our efforts to create a robust telemedicine infrastructure and it demonstrates our desire to serve our patients well, anytime and anywhere,” said Greg Ohe, Orlando Health’s senior vice president of ambulatory services, in a news release.

Orlando Health is among the growing number of health systems that are offering telemedicine services to the public for a fee. AdventHealth’s service is called eCare and Nemours Children’s Hospital’s is called CareConnect .

In brief…

Orlando Health bought a 0.34-acre piece of land and a medical office building on S. Orange Ave., adjacent to its downtown campus. The health system purchased the property from Dr. Stanley Hand and Joanne Hand. The purchase price was not disclosed.

“Future plans for the property are still being finalized but may include the demolition of the nearly 70-year-old structure to make way for enhancing the campus visitation experience for the community — including patients and visitors, residents and team members,” the health system said in a news release.

Nurses at the surgical unit of Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital sewed together sterile surgical wraps into 28 six-foot sleeping bags and 14 pillows for people in need and donated them to the Community Hope Center in Osceola County. The initiative started in July and the idea came from an article that was posted on social media by a hospital in New Jersey, according to an Orlando Health news release.

“The sleeping bags are a great example of upcycling, as well as they provide persons in need with something warmer and more comfortable to sleep on than cardboard or grass,” said Cory McFarlane, a registered nurse at the Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, in a news release.

AdventHealth Winter Park will start to expand its emergency department in January, a project that’s part of an ongoing construction at the hospital. The new 27,000-square-foot ER will have 32 private rooms, two trauma rooms and a new ambulance entrance. It will also feature a separate pediatric waiting area. Emergency services at the hospital will continue to be available throughout the construction at the existing ER.

AdventHealth Waterman has opened a new 12-bed inpatient rehabilitation center on the third floor of the hospital’s new patient tower. The center specializes in stroke, brain and spinal cord injuries, in addition to amputations and neurological disorders. The unit also includes a bariatric room patients who weigh more than 750 pounds.

ChenMed , a Miami-based privately-owned chain of medical practices for seniors, is opening new offices in Orlando as part of a nationwide expansion. It is opening 20 medical practices in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Memphis, and St. Louis in addition to Orlando. With the expansion, the company will have nearly 80 centers in 10 states, according to the company.

“We’re enjoying a record year at ChenMed,” said company CEO Dr. Christopher Chen, in a news release. “As a mission-driven company long focused on revolutionizing primary care for at-risk seniors, we’re self-funding a record number of new centers in 2020.”

The Early Learning Coalition of Seminole and the Florida Department of Health in Seminole County have opened the “Brain Food Project,” including activities and toys that to boost children’s brain development along with parent tips, throughout the three patient waiting room areas at the health department. The two organizations conceived the idea as a way to leverage the idle time that parents and their children spend while waiting for their doctor or dentist appointment, according to a news release. Early Learning Coalition of Seminole officials said the model can be duplicated in other facilities.

The Leapfrog Group announced the 2019 Top Hospitals based on performance in several areas, including preventing infections, reducing C-sections and using technology to reduce medication errors. In Central Florida, AdventHealth Apopka , Orlando Health South Lake Hospital and Orlando Health Health Central Hospital were named among the top general hospitals; Nemours Children’s Hospital and Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children were among the top children’s hospitals and AdventHealth Orlando was one of the top teaching hospitals.

Orlando Health launches virtual clinic at Orange County Convention Center

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Health and Visit Orlando are teaming up to launch the Orlando Health Virtual Care Center inside the Orange County Convention Center.

The Virtual Care Center will be located in the west building near the Visit Orlando Welcome Center in the central lobby. Medical providers will be able to evaluate medical conditions for attendees during large conventions.

The Virtual Care Center will also be staffed by an Orlando Health team member who can help triage the needs of those visiting the center. If minor care is needed, the Orlando Health team member can help connect visitors to a medical provider via a virtual visit in the center’s private room.

Virtual visit physicians can evaluate medical conditions including allergies, cold and flu symptoms, diarrhea, insect bites, pink eye, respiratory infections, skin rashes, sore throat and sprains. They are also able to write prescriptions, which can be sent to a local pharmacy.

Patients will be able to share a summary of the health visit with their primary care doctor.

During large conventions, the Virtual Care Center will be open from 8:00 a.m. — 4:00 p.m. The visit will take about 30 minutes and cost $55. However, officials say health insurance is not accepted.

Anyone in need of medical attention when the Virtual Care Center is not open can access on-demand virtual visits with an Orlando Health doctor 24/7 from any location through www.orlandohealth.com/virtual-visit .

Through the partnership, tourists, business travelers and Visit Orlando member organizations have access to visitor-specific wellness tips and individualized health resources, including a concierge telephone number established to help connect visitors who may need access to local medical resources such as emergency care, urgent care or even access to a virtual visit while visiting Orlando. Symptom Monitoring App Reduces High-Cost Health Visits for Breast Cancer Patients

Breast cancer makes up about one third of all new cancer diagnoses in U.S. women every year, and 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed at some point in their life. After skin cancer, it is the second most common cancer in women.

Most women diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. have hormone receptor-positive tumors, which doctors treat with adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET). AET increases survival rates , but it also has negative effects like joint pain and hot flashes. Those negative effects lower adherence to AET (make patients less likely to take their AET treatment as directed).

In a new study published in JAMA Network Open , a team of researchers led by Ilana Graetz, PhD , associate professor of health policy and management, evaluated an intervention to improve AET adherence. They tested a mobile app where women could report when they took their AET medication and any symptoms they experienced, with certain reported symptoms alerting the oncology team. Some participants also received weekly text messages with personally tailored information related to AET and managing symptoms.

What They Found

Using the app, with or without also receiving tailored text messages, did not improve AET adherence. However, there were secondary positive effects. Compared to participants who did not have access to the monitoring app, those who used the app and received tailored messages:

• Had fewer in-person medical encounters, likely because symptoms that triggered alerts could be resolved by a phone call with a nurse, rather than a visit to the clinic.
• Had fewer high-cost health care encounters (such as emergency department visits and hospitalizations).

Why It Matters

“Improving long-term endocrine therapy adherence is a complex problem that may require more comprehensive or targeted interventions,” says Graetz. “Even though we did not succeed in improving adherence, reducing high-cost encounters is highly consequential for patients, health systems, and payers."
