OSX Citrix Client Installation - Auto open ICA files from Safari

and_receiver_h24bit_512-e1314689997136

We have come across an issue recently with the new version of the Citrix online plugin (now called Citrix Reciever). Installation of the Citrix Reciever software from the OSX App store is not sufficient to allow the downloaded ICA file to auto open. The result is, you install Citrix Reciever and login to the Citrix site only for the ICA file to download, but not open. This makes it look like Citrix isn't working properly.

The fix is simple:

First, you have to modify what Safari considers as a "safe" file. Ensure that in Safari's Preference panel that 'Open "Safe" files' is checked.

Next, download this zip file: https://www.jaytag.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Auto_Open_ICA.zip

Extract the plist (preferences file) from the downloaded zip file

Drag and drop the file to /Library/Preferences. (On OSX Lion, type library in the 'Find' box and double-click into the preferences folder)

Restart Safari

The ICA files should now automatically open, allowing Citrix to work as intended.

Citrix ICA File

What is an ica file.

An ICA file is an Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) file used by Citrix application servers. It contains configuration information used to connect to a server-based application or desktop environment. Citrix users can create ICA files with the Citrix Quick Launch, ICA File Creator, or a text editor.

More Information

ICA files allow users to connect to remote virtual desktops, which contain one or more applications. This allows users to access the application(s) without installing them locally. Enterprise organizations use ICA files and Citrix clients to allow employees to access critical business applications from remote locations, and to standardize application distribution and access.

How to open an ICA file

If you have a Citrix client installed, you can double-click an ICA file to open the remote virtual application or desktop environment that the file references. If you need a Citrix client, you can install Citrix Workspace - a free Citrix client available for PCs and mobile devices. (Citrix Workspace replaced Citrix Receiver.)

You can also open an ICA file in Microsoft Notepad (Windows), Apple TextEdit (Mac), or any other text editor, to view the configuration information the file contains.

Programs that open ICA files

Image object content architecture file.

An ICA file may also be an image saved in the Image Object Content Architecture (IOCA) format. It contains a bitmap image comprised of multiple segments. Each segment contains image data, as well as parameters that describe the image's characteristics.

IBM developed the Image Object Content Architecture format. It is a platform-independent format used to exchange image data. Each IOCA format file contains a description of itself and its contents, allowing programs to read and process the file without any additional information.

IOCA images are commonly saved as ICA files. These files contain one or more images, shown on one or more pages. The images may be compressed , and they may be monochrome, grayscale, or color. ICA files are mainly used for printing and archiving images.

You can open an ICA file in XnViewMP (multiplatform). To do so, select File → Open... . Then, navigate to and open your ICA file.

How to convert an ICA file

You can use XnViewMP to convert ICA files to many other image formats. To do so, open your ICA file and then select File → Export... or File → Save as... .

Open ICA file downloaded with Safari in Citrix viewer Macro (v10.2)

While Chrome browser one can be easily set up to open certain files with certain app automatically instead of downloading them, newer Safari browser versions to my knowledge miss this option.

I have to open Citrix client app multiple times a day and have to use Safari browser. I created this simple solution to automatically open all downloaded files with .ica extension in the download folder with Citrix viewer.

Citrix Workspace for Mac - .ICA Files

Asked by Michael Gambling , April 4, 2023

Michael Gambling

I have a user on a Mac who is having issues using Citrix Workspace. Upon browsing to the Citrix URL via web browser, they log in and select the Citrix App they intend to access. Upon clicking it, the browser will proceed to download a .ICA file, I have seen this in the past and normally you can just click it and then the app will run through Citrix Workspace desktop. However in this instance you click it and it does nothing.

Here is some basic info:

OS = Mac OSX Catalina (15.7)

Citrix Product = Citrix Workspace (for Mac.)

Citrix Product Version = Tried Multiple, all the way up to latest Version: 23.01.1.60 (2301)

Upon clicking the .ica, it does appear to do nothing, although logs i believe state otherwise as I see these entries which seem to relate to the error which I have posted at the very bottom as it is quite a big data dump, with an extra layer of fun it being partially in Spanish (Not a language i am familiar with)

So far I have tried the following to resolve this:

- Removing all User library application data I could find trace of.

- Using Citrix uninstall utility to fully remove and re-add the product, multiple times with multiple versions used.

- Using multiple web browsers, namely Chrome and Safari, which both result in the same error

- Ensuring the .ICA files being downloaded are set to open by default in Citrix Workspace.

- Copied the .ICA file to a test Mac, running OSX Catalina (15.7) also, with the same version of Citrix (23.01.1.60 (2301) here the .ICA file is picked up by Citrix Workspace and does open.

From log files below indications of issues with Keychains appear to be present, but I cant really see how this would effect the issue I am describing, i guess my main question here is it worth nuking the keychain? Or certain entries? I really cant see how the keychain may cause such an issue, but the problem does seem to be isolated to the specific user profile. I am currently trying to have someone generate a secondary profile on the same Mac to test things there, but unsure how far I will get there..

Really hoping someone may have seen this before? I have seen a handful of Citrix articles relating but none have resolved my issue... Thanks for taking the time to read this, any input / ideas would be amazing - Thanks!

Log FIle: I Hope to have this narrowed down a bit soon, but pending access to the laptop in order to generate more.

I managed to solve the same (or very similar at least) problem by resetting the keychain. Quite annoying since I had to log back in everywhere, but it did solve the problem at least. Hopefully there's a less drastic way to solve it though, but I'm not sure what that can be.

New launch.ica file is downloaded every time and app doesn't launch automatically

  • Open your downloads folder (or whichever folder your browser is downloading the launch.ica files).
  • Delete ALL launch.ica files in that folder.
  • Attempt to launch an app through the web portal (only click once).
  • If a new ica file is downloaded but the app does not open, look for an arrow on the launch.ica file icon shown in your browser and click it.
  • Look for an option such as "always open files of this type" and click this option.
  • Delete the ica file and try launching the app again (it should automatically launch going forward).

Automatically open ica file in Chrome and Edge – 3 easy fixes

John van Ooijen

  • July 18, 2021
  • Windows 10 , Windows 11

If you often work with Citrix sessions, you will probably recognize the following problem to open ica files. As soon as you click on an ICA file from the browser, Edge or Chrome, the file will be downloaded to your Downloads folder. Or you will get a popup window in which you have to specify the location of the ICA file. To log into the Citrix session, you then need to go to the Downloads folder and double-click to open ICA file. That is quite cumbersome!

In Edge and Chrome, you can automatically open ICA files with Citrix Workspace. This not only saves you time, but it also saves a mountain of ICA files in your Downloads folder!

ica downloads

Table of Contents

Automatically open citrix ica files in chrome.

It often happens that Chome downloads the ICA files, instead of opening them directly. This is annoying because you have to click extra mouse clicks and have to empty your Downloads folder afterward. I regularly had hundreds of ICA files in my Downloads folder. To automatically open ICA files in Chrome with Citrix Workspace App , follow these steps

Ask where to save each file before downloading

  • Next, go to the Citrix portal where you start the Citrix session (thus where you get the ICA file)

Always open files of this type

  • Done! Citrix ICA files should now automatically open in Receiver of Workspace App while working in Chrome

Automatically open Citrix ICA files in Edge

Unlike Chrome, opening ICA files in Edge often works well. As soon as I try to download and open ICA file, a popup appears:

open ica file the site is trying to open citrix workspace launcher

If ICA files are nevertheless downloaded in Edge and don’t open automatically, do the following:

  • Navigate to the Citrix portal where the ICA file is downloaded.

Citrix ICA Always open ica files of this type Edge

Link ica file extension to Citrix Workspace

If the Citrix Workspace or Connection Manager does not start automatically when double-clicking on the ICA file, then a link is missing between the ICA file and the Citrix application. In Windows 10 you can solve this open ica file problem as follows:

  • Click Start -> Type “file type” > click Choose Default apps by file type
  • In the Settings window Choose Default apps by file type , scroll down under Name and find the .ica file type
  • Ensure that the current default is set to Citrix Connection Manager . If not, click C hange program and choose Citrix Connection Manager . This will ensure the next time you open ICA files, Windows will use the Citrix Connection manager NOTE: Connection Manager is the wfcrun32 file located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix . On older operation systems, this file is located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client

For my HP Envyx360 with Windows 10 pro it installs the Workspace app but refuses to enable the option to open with Citrix Connection Manager. No solutions offered to date – note new laptop and fresh pro 10.

John van Ooijen

I don’t think it’s really related to the hardware model. More to Windows 10 only.

Monishbabu T

I couldn’t able to to find the folder “Citrix” in the path C:\Program Files (x86).

Steven

I followed the instructions and they all appear good, however after clicking the link in Chrome or Edge, you can see it do something, then just stop as though its finished, no error msgs are displayed. If I double click an .ica file in explorer, it does the same. I checked and wfcrun32  is the program that is being launched, but then it closes as though its not happy about something.

Dennis

The version of Edge I use does not have the ‘ Always open files of this type ‘ option. The file extension is associated to Citrix. How do I get this Edge version to open the ICA file after its downloaded?

Edge Version 110.0.1587.57 (Official build) (64-bit)

Richard

Did you know where Chrome or Edge save the Information to start ICA-Files automatic after download?

How to change a .ica file default app

Good morning,

I'm trying to open a .ica file in Microsoft edge and by accident I chose internet explorer. Now I'am stuck and cannot open my work vpn network files. I have the correct app installed but can not access it because its not in the Microsoft store. When I go to settings under default apps, I chose "Choose default apps by file type" I went to .ica and internet explorer is my only option. My question is how do I set it back to nothing or associate it with the correct citrix receiver app.

Use iTunes to share files between your computer and your iOS or iPadOS device

You can copy files between your computer and apps on your iOS or iPadOS device using File Sharing.

Before you begin

If you're using macOS Catalina or later, use the Finder to share files between your computer and your iPhone or iPad . If you're using Windows 10 or later, use Apple Devices to share files between your Windows computer and your iPhone or iPad .

Instead of File Sharing, consider using iCloud Drive, Handoff, or AirDrop to keep your documents up to date across all of your devices.

iCloud Drive lets you securely access all of your documents from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC. No matter which device you're using, you'll always have the most up to date documents when and where you need them.

With Handoff , you can start a document, email, or message on one device and pick up where you left off from another device. Handoff works with Apple apps such as Mail, Safari, Maps, Messages, Reminders, Calendar, Contacts, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. Some third-party apps are also compatible.

AirDrop helps you share photos, videos, websites, locations, and more with other nearby Apple devices.

What you need for File Sharing

The latest version of iTunes .

OS X El Capitan through macOS Mojave or an up-to-date version of Windows 7 or later.

An iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with the latest version of iOS or iPadOS .

An iOS or iPadOS app that works with File Sharing.

See which of your iOS and iPadOS apps can share files with your computer

Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.

Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer using the USB cable that came with your device.

Click your device in iTunes. Get help if you can't find it.

macos-mojave-itunes-iphone12-pro-connected-device

In the left sidebar, click File Sharing.

macos-mojave-itunes-iphone12-pro-connected-file-sharing.png

Select an app to see which files are available for sharing in that app on your device. If you don't see a File Sharing section, your device has no file-sharing apps.

macos-mojave-itunes-iphone12-pro-connected-file-sharing-documents-list.png

Copy files from your computer to your iOS or iPadOS app

In iTunes, select the app from the list in the File Sharing section.

Drag and drop files from a folder or window onto the Documents list to copy them to your device. You can also click Add in the Documents list in iTunes, find the file or files you want to copy from your computer, and then click Add. iTunes copies these files to the app on your device. Choose only files that will work with the app. Check the app's user guide to learn which kinds of files will work.

macos-mojave-iphone12-pro-itunes-file-sharing-apps-document-add.png

Copy files from an iOS or iPadOS app to your computer

Drag and drop files from the Documents list to a folder or window on your computer to copy them to your computer. You can also select the file or files that you want to copy to your computer from the Documents list and click "Save" then find the folder on your computer to which you want to copy the files and click Save.

macos-mojave-itunes-iphone12-pro-file-sharing-apps-document-save.png

Open shared files

On your iOS device, you can open the files from your computer with the app that you chose for File Sharing.

You can't access these files from other apps or locations on your device. You can see the list of files in the File Sharing section of iTunes when your device is connected to your computer.

Back up shared files

When iCloud (or iTunes) backs up your device , it backs up your shared files as well.

If you delete an app with shared files from your iOS device, you also delete those shared files from your device and your iCloud or iTunes backup. To avoid losing shared files, copy the files to your computer before deleting the app from your iOS device.

Delete a shared file from your iOS device

To delete a file you copied to an iOS or iPadOS app using File Sharing, follow these steps:

Select your device in iTunes. Get help if you can't find it.

Select the app from the list in the File Sharing section.

Select the file that you want to delete in the Documents list, then press the Delete key on your keyboard.

When iTunes asks you to confirm, click Delete.

macos-itunes12-5-delete-document-modal

There might be other ways to delete files from an app. Read your app's user guide to find out more.

Users Prompted to Download, Run, Open ".ica" File Instead of Launching Connection

When launching an application from an ica file, web interface or storefront through the internet browser, users are prompted to save or download the launch.ica file. dec 13, 2023 • knowledge, information.

When launching an application or desktop via an Internet Browser (Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) users are prompted to save or download the ".ica" file.

In recent releases of IE, Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox, and latest Citrix Workspace App clients many of the issues mentioned below have been resolved. By default, the OS (Windows, Mac, Linux) should automatically set how to open  ".ica"  files when trying to launch any resource via Citrix Workspace or Citrix Storefront via the Web Store if the Citrix Workspace App is installed properly. So, when Workspace is installed correctly, the "receiver" protocol is registered to open by default with "WebHelper.exe" which is visible under the registry:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\receiver\shell\open\command  (Default): "C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client\WebHelper.exe" "%1" Therefore, when user clicks on their required published app or desktop, the navigation will occur to the external protocol (receiver) within the browser, for example:

receiver:// storefront.your-domain.com/Citrix/Your-Store-name/clientAssistant/getIcaFile/YWN0aW9uPWx2ZXJQcm90b2NvbFZlcPUlDQV9EcDZ6RVRCT2JvT3F0   Now, the web browser will detect the default handler of receiver protocol which is Citrix Web Helper that performs rest of the steps to initiate ICA session. Please confirm Citrix Workspace App is installed or use Citrix Workspace App for HTML5 ( "Web Browser" option) instead.   If you continue to encounter this behavior please review the steps outlined below.

open ica file safari

There can be a number of resolutions to the issue including but not limited to the following:

Clear the "Do not save encrypted data to disk" Option

Add website to trusted sites.

  • Disable ActiveX Filtering
  • Enable Citrix ICA Client Object (ActiveX Win32)

Install the Latest Version of Citrix Workspace App

Install the latest Citrix Workspace App version which can be downloaded here:  Download Citrix Workspace App

Automatically Open ICA Files

When clicking on an application or desktop to launch via Citrix Workspace or Citrix Storefront on an Internet Browser (not within Citrix Workspace App) and an " .ica" file  shows in the download bar on the bottom left please follow these steps to automatically open said file:  ICA file is downloaded during the process. After the ICA file is downloaded, enable the browser to open similar files automatically. Note: Instructions below are similar for other OS's when using Google Chrome, Firefox, or Edge Browsers.

  • Navigate to the Citrix Storefront URL
  • Select the resource you are trying to access - Application or Desktop
  • You will receive a notification on the bottom of the browser to  "Open, Save, Cancel"
  • Select the Save.
  • The download bar will now show to  "Open, Open Folder, View Downloads",
  • Select the drop-down list next to "Open"  and select "Open With"
  • Find and select "Connection Manager"
  • Navigate to the Citrix Storefront UR
  • Firefox will prompt you with a dialog box to Open Link to the the '".ica" file
  • Select "Always allow " ifeventadded="true">https://<Your-Store-URL> ; to open receiver links"
  • Select "Open Link" to launch the app.

image

Remove or Disable Third Party Browser Adware

Remove or disable any third party browser based Adware software that could be interfering with the successful launch of the ICA file. Restart the browser after removing these software and try again.

If you are using Internet Explorer, click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab and clear the option “Do not save encrypted data to disk.” . This option should be cleared because the dynamic files are stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder. When applications are clicked, a file is downloaded to the folder, then launched using MIME type. If access to the folder is disabled or not available, the process cannot occur successfully.

User-added image

Below are for older Browser/Citrix Receiver Deployments:

Add the site to the Trusted sites list if using Internet Explorer browser using the following steps:

Go to  Tools  > Internet Options > Security tab > Sites

In the Add this website to the zone field, enter your organization's website and click Add .

User-added image

Disable ActiveX Filtering (Enable ActiveX)

Configure Internet Explorer as follows to allow successful application launching:

  • Disable ActiveX filtering feature for the Web Interface site, either by:

Disabling ActiveX filtering globally: Click Gear icon, select Safety , de-select ActiveX Filtering . Alternatively, press Alt key and click Tools menu (ActiveX filtering is enabled if a “tick” appears next to it and is disabled if the “tick” disappears).

User-added image

Log on to the Web Interface site and attempt to launch an application. At the end of the address bar a blue warning sign appears, indicating filtered content.

User-added image

  • Enable ICA launch using one of the following options:

Add the site to the Trusted sites list : In the Security tab of Internet Options, add the Web Interface site to Trusted Sites list to allow the use of the ActiveX ICA client object for the launch.

Disable the MIME filter : Rename the following registry key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\application/x-ica

Log off and close window then restart the browser after making this change.

Enable Citrix ICA Client plugin

  • Launch Internet Explorer
  • Go to Tools  > Manage add-ons
  • Select  Citrix ICA Client plugin and click Enable

IE plugin

There can be a number of reasons for the issue including but not limited to:

  • The *.ica file on the client needs to be associated with Citrix Workspace App
  • Outdated Internet Browsers in use

CTX200889 -  Receiver for Web Workaround with NPAPI Support Removal in Google Chrome

iOS 15.2.1 - Cannot open .ics file attachment in any app,

Apple does not let me open an .ics file attachment received in a non-Apple Mail client app.

The Share function does not list any calendar app (e.g. Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, etc.)

A question about this issue was also asked in previous thread but remains unresolved.

Previously, a community user suggested the file might be corrupted. If so, the corruption issue is related to the app. In this case the email client is ProtonMail.

Nonetheless, the only workaround is for me to forward the email from the non-Apple Mail app to Apple Mail.

However, download folder shows file with file extension ".download" which cannot be opened I am trying to download certain files on Safari. Download seems without any glitch. Download manager in Safari indicates that file is downloaded. However, in download folder the file sits with additional file extension ".download".

The ICA file downloads automatically, and the app opens automatically in Citrix Workspace app for iOS. In iOS 11 and iOS 12. Tap the icon of the app you want to launch. The ICA file downloads automatically, but you must manually open the ICA file by tapping Open in Workspace. The app opens in Citrix Workspace app for iOS thereafter. In iOS 13. Tip:

With the Citrix Workspace web extension you can launch your workspace apps everywhere without an .ica file, making your experience safer and more reliable.
