What does the check engine light of your Journey mean?

What does the check engine light of your Journey mean?

In a few words: It’s a warning light that alerts the driver about any type of engine problems . In some vehicles, the light comes in two colors: yellow to indicate minor problems and red to indicate serious problems.

The check engine light is part of every vehicle that has an electronic engine management system, either an integral one or only for fuel ignition. Its function is to alert the driver about any type of engine problems .

While driving, the computer of your Journey (ECU o PCM) monitors air/fuel supply and exhaust gases in order to verify that the engine is working properly. If any problem is detected, the check engine Light of your dashboard will turn on.

Depending on the type of failure, the light may either blink or remain constantly lit. If the problem is serious, your Journey will be in a “emergency” state that will prevent you from accelerating the engine above certain speed limit, forcing you to drive at low speed in order to avoid further damages.

The check engine light can alert you about some failures but not all of them. It will depend on how complex the electronic control unit of your Journey is.

To properly diagnose the failure of your Journey, it is important to have a suitable scanner that is compatible with the brand and model of your car. The scanner will show the engine fault code that the computer has detected, which is related to a certain problem that is affecting the engine.

The most common check engine light causes of your Journey and how to detect them.

  • Ignition cylinder problems: irregular engine running.
  • Problem with exhaust gas oxygen sensor (Lambda probe): irregular engine running, there are misfires when accelerating abruptly or driving at low revs. It may be caused by a sensor fault or a failure of the catalytic converter.
  • Problems with the engine intake (air or fuel): engine running may be rough or irregular.
  • Problems with the electrical system: sometimes it is easy to identify the cause but other times it may take days of testing to find the source of the problem.
  • Sensor malfunction: It affects engine running or stops running completely.
  • Wiring problems: contact failure, cut wires, short circuits.

Indicator status and severity

The check engine light can behave in different ways. Here we show you the most common light signals so you can know what is happening to your Journey:

  • The light turns on when you switch on the ignition key and then it turns off : It’s normal. It’s used to verify that the light itself is working and the bulb is not burned out.
  • The light blinks and then it turns off (cyclically) : This indicates that the car had a problem at one point but it is not happening at the moment.
  • The light is steady: This indicates that there is a problem but is not so serious as to stop driving your vehicle.
  • The light blinks continuously: This indicates that there is a critical problem. Usually, you should stop driving your vehicle.

Keep in mind that if you have a top-quality scanner, you will be able to verify all the car sensors , avoiding blind maintenance which is a pointless waste of money. Another recommendation is to check the owner's manual , if you want to know more about the fault codes that the scanner will detect.

P0128 Dodge Journey: Meaning, Causes, How to Fix

P0128 OBD2 Code DIY Repair

The P0128 OBD II trouble code indicates that your Dodge Journey’s engine coolant temperature has not reached its required operating temperature within a certain amount of time after starting the vehicle. This code can appear as soon as you start your vehicle, or it can also occur while driving.

It’s essential to address this issue immediately, as vehicles with this issue have increased emissions and decreased fuel efficiency. In this article, we’ll explore the possible causes of the Dodge Journey P0128 OBD II trouble code and some possible solutions.

P0128 is most often caused by a thermostat that is stuck open.

P0128 Quick Info

Dodge Journey P0128

On the Journey, the coolant temperature sensor is a very common cause of P0128. Here’s how to test and replace it . Otherwise it’ll be a stuck thermostat causing the code:

P0128 Definition: Coolant Temp – Below Thermostat Regulating Temp

The P0128 OBD-II trouble code is a generic powertrain diagnostic code (it has the same meaning for the Dodge Journey as any other vehicle).

Coolant Temperature

The coolant temp sensor is responsible for telling the Engine Control Module (ECM) the engine’s coolant temperature.

P0128 indicates an issue with the engine’s coolant temperature not reaching the proper operating temperature within a certain amount of time.

Below Thermostat Regulating Temp

As part of your Journey’s computer system, your Engine Control Module (ECM) tracks various engine conditions, such as air temperature, engine speed and load, coolant temperature, etc.

When the ECM detects that the engine’s coolant is not reaching its proper operating temperature within a set timeframe, it will trigger this P0128 trouble code to alert the driver of a potential issue.

Journey P0128 Symptoms

P0128 Symptoms Dodge Journey

The most common symptom of a P0128 trouble code in a Dodge Journey is an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). Other symptoms may include poor engine performance and a decrease in fuel economy.

  • Lack of heat – The most prominent symptom of the P0128 trouble code in the Dodge Journey is the lack of heat. When the thermostat doesn’t bring the engine up to the proper operating temp, it means that the coolant going through the heater core isn’t as hot. This leads to less/no heat. If you feel your vehicle’s heater working better when sitting still and worse on the highway, that’s a dead giveaway for a thermostat that is stuck open.
  • Service Engine Soon – Other than the heater not working, the only other symptom of P0128 is typically the service engine soon light itself.
  • Slight Decrease in fuel economy – The P0128 code may also lead to a slight decrease in fuel economy. This is because your Journey’s engine is running at a cooler temperature than it should be. As a result, it consumes more gasoline to keep itself running correctly.

P0128 Causes: Dodge Journey

Fixing P0128 in the Dodge Journey is usually a pretty easy thing to do since, 90% of the time, a stuck thermostat will cause the problem. Here are the most common causes of P0128:

P0128 Causes Dodge Journey

  • Thermostat Stuck Open – Far and away, the most typical cause for the P0128 code is a thermostat that is stuck open. When a thermostat is stuck open, it allows coolant to flow through the engine at all times. When this happens, the engine is “over-cooled” and never reaches the proper operating temperature. How to Replace a Thermostat (video) .
  • ECT Sensor / Wiring- If the thermostat itself isn’t the problem, it’ll be the wiring/sensor associated with Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT).

Dodge Journey P0128 Diagnosis

An excellent way to tell if it’s a sensor issue or an issue with the thermostat is whether or not the Dodge Journey’s engine is running at its proper operating temperature.

It can be challenging to tell this in a vehicle that doesn’t have a temperature gauge. If you feel the heater isn’t working well, that is the easiest way to tell the thermostat is stuck open .

Are there Other Codes?

If there are codes related to the ECT, such as P0117 or P0118, they indicate that the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor is not performing correctly, which means you should start diagnosing P0128 in your Dodge Journey by taking a look at the ECT and wiring.

Is the Heat Blowing Hot?

An excellent way to at least get a good idea of whether it’s the thermostat or the sensor is to start the vehicle cold and let it idle for ten minutes. If you feel little to no heat from the heater, it’s a good indication that the thermostat is the problem and not a wiring issue.

Squeeze the Thermostat Hose

A mechanic will check under the hood where your Journey’s radiator hose meets the thermostat housing. If it is easy to pinch the hose, the engine coolant will typically flow through it.

If you pinch your hose, stay aware of the belted accessories and the fan. The fan can come on at any time .

Check the Coolant Temperature

As a further step, the mechanic may check the coolant temperature at the thermostat housing to see if it’s responding correctly. If it isn’t, there’s likely an issue with the thermostat itself.

You’ll need an infrared temperature gun to verify the temperature at the thermostat. They’re not very expensive at places such as Harbor Freight.

Inspect All Electrical Connections

The mechanic will also inspect all electrical connections to ensure they are in good condition and not corroded or loose. If they are, repair the harness and verify that it clears the code.

Replace the Thermostat

If all of the above checks out and it still seems like the thermostat is the culprit, then it’s time to replace it. Replacing the thermostat in the Dodge Journey is relatively easy and should take no more than an hour or two.

After repairing your Journey, clear the code from your vehicle’s computer and reset it. Then, take a test drive and verify that it hasn’t returned.

P0128 is not a severe threat to the immediate drivability of your Journey. However, it should be noted that most modern fuel-injected engines like to run at 200+ degrees. Letting them run too cool can cause problems after an extended period. Good luck figuring out what is going on with your Journey!

Dodge Journey battery light is on – causes and how to reset

When the red battery light comes on in the dashboard of Dodge Journey, it indicates a malfunction in the charging system. This can happen due to a number of reasons which we will discuss in this article.

Dodge Journey

The most common reason for battery light illuminating in Dodge Journey is faulty alternator. But the battery light can also come on due to a damaged wire, corrosion on electrical connectors, corrosion on battery terminals, bad ground connection and slipping serpentine belt.

1. Faulty Alternator

2012 dodge journey engine light on

Alternators can fail at any time, but generally they last over 100,000 miles. Before replacing the alternator, you must rule out other causes that may stop or degrade flow of current from the alternator, for example: bad electrical connection or damaged wire.

How to test the alternator

The easiest method to check the alternator is by measuring the voltage at the battery terminals when the engine is running.

  • Start your Journey.
  • Connect the black cable of the multimeter to negative terminal of the battery, and the red cable to the positive terminal.
  • The voltage should be between 13.5 and 14.8 volts with the engine running.
  • Switch on the accessories in your Journey, for example, headlights, AC fan at full speed, and interior lights.
  • The voltage should remain around 14 volts. If it drops and remain below 13.5 volts, it indicates a problem with the current supply from the alternator.
  • If the voltage drops below 12 volts with the engine running and the accessories turned on, it means the current supply from the alternator is completely cut off and all the electronics are solely powered by the battery.

2012 dodge journey engine light on

Can you drive Journey with a bad alternator?

Yes, you can drive your Journey with a bad alternator, but only for a short distance. The battery charge will go down as you drive since all the on-board electronic controllers and accessories are now solely powered by the battery. When the battery charge gets too low the engine will shut down, and you will be stranded.

2. Poor ground connection

What is a ground connection.

The negative terminal of the battery is connected to the body/chassis of Journey, called a ground connection. The engine also requires a ground connection to function, but the way the engine is mounted, it does not allow the electric current to flow between the engine and the body (due to non-conductive rubber insulated engine mounts). For this purpose, a ground strap/wire is used to connect the engine and the chassis.

2012 dodge journey engine light on

What happens when the ground connection goes bad?

If the ground connection of the chassis or the engine goes bad in your Journey due to rust or corrosion, you will face all sorts of electrical issues, including battery light illuminating in the dashboard. The alternator relies on the ground connection of the engine to function properly. When the ground is bad, the current supply from the alternator will be reduced or may fluctuate. Additionally, in rare cases the contact between the engine block and the alternator can also go bad due to corrosion.

How to check if the ground connection is good?

You can check the quality of the ground connection in Journey by doing a conductivity test between the negative terminal of the battery and the engine. Take a multimeter, change its settings to ohms symbol. Touch one probe to the negative terminal of the battery, and the other probe to any exposed metal part of the engine. The reading should be at or very close to zero ohms. Do the same between the negative terminal of the battery and exposed metal part of the alternator.

Inspect and clean the ground connections

If the conductivity test fails, check the condition of the ground connections in your Journey. Inspect the connectors of the ground cables (battery to body, body to engine) for any signs of rust or corrosion. Clean the contacts with a sandpaper or wire brush. You may also have to remove the alternator and clean the ground contact area on the alternator and on the engine block.

3. Poor battery connection

It is possible the alternator in your Dodge Journey is working properly, but the current flow is interrupted due to a loose electrical connection, a damaged wire, or corrosion on the battery terminals.

Corrosion on battery terminals

Battery corrosion is a fairy common problem (except in AGM batteries), especially if the installed battery is more than 2 years old. Corrosion occurs when the battery acid reacts with the metal terminals which can lead to loss of contact and reduced current flow. If there isn’t enough current flow, the battery will not be charged properly, and may cause engine starting problems.

Check battery terminals

To know if your Journey charging system problems are from dirty battery terminals, you need to investigate them. Lift the plastic covers over the terminals and check for any signs of corrosion. If you discover white deposits or silvery-green deposits, but no further cracks or damage, you may not have to replace the battery or the alternator, just clean the battery terminals.

2012 dodge journey engine light on

Clean the battery terminals

Quick cleaning: There is a neat little trick with which you can clean corrosion on the battery terminals of your Journey in under a minute. Pour hot boiling water over the corroded terminals and the corrosion will just melt away. Do one terminal at a time and don’t let water puddle on the top of the battery touch both terminals at the same time, this can short the battery.

Thorough cleaning: To thoroughly clean the battery in your Dodge Journey, you have to remove the terminal cables first, which requires no special knowledge, just a little concentration, as the order is very important. First remove the black cable from the negative terminal using a wrench or a plier. Next you can unplug the red positive terminal cable. Be careful not to touch both terminals with your metal tool, it will be one expensive mistake. Once the battery has been removed from the circuit, you can start cleaning the corroded battery with sandpaper or wire brush. After cleaning, reconnect the cables in reverse order, positive first, then negative.

4. Slipping serpentine belt

The serpentine belt, also known as accessory belt or drive belt, transfers the power from the engine to other components like the alternator and the AC compressor, that are essential for normal operation of your Dodge Journey.

If the serpentine belt is damaged or becomes loose, or if the alternator pulley develops a defect, it can cause the belt to slip. This can cause the alternator to spin slower or inconsistently and the electricity production is degraded. When the on-board diagnostic system detects low voltage from the alternator, the battery symbol light comes on in the instrument cluster of Journey.

Symptoms of bad serpentine belt

The most common sign of bad serpentine belt in Journey is squealing noise from the engine compartment. Another prominent sign is visible cracks on the ribbed part of the belt. A slipping accessory belt can also cause burning smell.

2012 dodge journey engine light on

Sound of a slipping serpentine belt

If the serpentine belt is found to be defective, it must be replaced. Keep in mind that a slipping belt is not always defective, it can slip due to a number of reasons, including due to a bad tensioner pulley or any other pulley.

5. Rodent damage

If rodents like rats, mice, or squirrels have chewed up the cables for the alternator, it can cause the battery light to turn on in Journey. Look for any signs of bite marks in the engine compartment, and examine all the cables for the alternator. If any cable has been damaged, replace it with a new one.

How to reset the battery light

Fix the issue.

Resetting the battery light in Journey without solving the underlying issue may not help, as the warning light will turn back on when the system again detects the fault. The light should disappear automatically after fixing the issue. If it doesn’t turn off immediately, driving your vehicle for a few miles should help.

OBDII scanner method

The proper way to reset the battery light in Journey is by clearing the codes with an OBDII scanner. If the warning light doesn’t turn off automatically after fixing the issue, you will have to do it manually by connecting a diagnostic device and then deleting all the error codes related to the charging system.

2012 dodge journey engine light on

Disconnect the battery

If you don’t have a diagnostic device, it may be possible to reset the battery light in Journey by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery first, then from the positive terminal. With the battery disconnected, press the horn button a few times and turn on the headlights to drain out all the residual electricity from the system. After about 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order: positive cable first, then negative cable.

Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis

Since Dodge Journey is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located.

2012 dodge journey engine light on

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Journey. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the tool connected, turn on the ignition. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be inaccurate. In addition to the vehicle make, model, and engine type, you usually also have to type in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Since some OBD codes are manufacturer-specific, the scanner will be able to give you more accurate information if you enter more details about your Journey.

When the battery light comes on in your Dodge Journey, you should always start with testing the voltage at the battery when the engine is running. If the voltage test fails, then move on to testing the alternator and its electrical connections.

In any case, it is advisable for laypersons to visit a workshop. A professional mechanic can swiftly diagnose the charging system issue for you.
