Why Ukraine’s Surprise Incursion on Russia Should Give Us Hope

U kraine is not about to seize Moscow, but its armed forces surprised many with its assault deep into Russian soil, now reportedly extending their reach from an initial six miles to more than 20 . The recent counter-offensive by Ukrainian forces into Russia’s bordering Kursk region not only signifies the resolve of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, military leaders, and soldiers but also evokes important events in military history worth remembering.
In just a mere 24 hours, Ukraine's forces defeated two major lines of fortifications in the Kursk region that took Russia over two-and-a-half years and over $170 million to construct. Leading Kremlin critic, financier William Browder called this triumph is a profound humiliation for Putin’s aura of invincibility weakening his image before the Russian people.
While Ukraine’s advances are only slight in a geographical sense, they are significant in other ways that are equally, if not more, essential to finding success on the battlefield. Parallel moments in history show the strategic and symbolic implications of this campaign.
Boosting Ukrainian morale
The French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte considered morale to be an underlying principle for military success, going as far as stating : “In war the moral is to the physical as three to one.” In World War II, the Battle of Iwo Jima served as a turning point in the war for the Pacific. While providing a strategic position, that hard-fought battle for the first Japanese home island catalyzed Allied troop and civilian morale.
The surprise attack by Ukraine could serve as a similar inspiration. Amid a concerted Russian offensive , an outmanned and exhausted Ukraine defied expectations and, for the moment, turned the tide. As with Iwo Jima, Ukraine’s quest is not to conquer new land, rather it is to stymie the enemy, reclaim their homeland, and ensure peace and prosperity for its people. The bold move by Zelenskyy and his military commander-in-chief, Col Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi, may be the impetus for Ukrainian soldiers to continue fighting elsewhere.
Forcing Russia to the defensive
In late 1776, General George Washington and his Continental Army had just suffered a series of defeats. Moreover, with an Army severely short of supplies, many were beginning to doubt their commander-in-chief and the prospects of success. Washington sensed the moment and decided to lead his troops through two pivotal battles, the Battles of Trenton and Princeton , in the middle of winter shifting the momentum to favor the revolutionaries and forcing the British to the defensive and to redeploy resources.
Like the Continental Army, Ukraine finds itself with both a limited number of supplies and troops. Success will only come in the form of carefully designed counterattacks that favor Ukraine’s smaller, nimbler forces, all while defending against unrelenting Russian pressure. The recent incursion may instigate Russia to divert resources from other regions, such as eastern Donetsk , where it has been conducting several offensives.
Opportunities for additional countermeasures by Ukrainian forces may present themselves as Russia redeploys troops, and potentially calls in conscripts, as well as resources from the eastern front and adjusts from an all-out offensive strategy to one that is more nuanced.Zelenskyy and Syrskyi must nowshow as Russia mounts its response, showing caution not to relinquish the invaluable manpower and equipment used for the original assault.
The confusion goes well beyond the battlefield for Russia. While Putin has been embarrassed on the world stage by Ukrainian advancements, leaders in the Kremlin have scrambled to recast the event as an act of terrorism, which further justifies Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia's National Counter-Terrorism Committee imposed a "counter-terrorism operation" regime across three regions on Friday in response to Ukraine's surprise cross-border incursion. Meanwhile, Russia's state Tass news agency has reported more than 76,000 people have been evacuated from the border area with new orders by Russian leadership to expedite additional evacuations. Such desperation will only continue to seed doubt among Russian soldiers and the public.
Solidifying international support and quieting doubters
Again, a look at the Continental Army of the Revolutionary War can tell us about the importance of financial and military support from foreign partners. In 1777, at the Battle of Saratoga, General Horatio Gates and his American soldiers defeated British forces just north of Albany to solidify their own advances, ultimately persuading the French to provide the revolutionaries with additional, and more significant, financial and military support. France’s aid was detrimental to America continuing their fresh offensive and the eventual success in Yorktown that ended the war for independence.
Perhaps the most consequential implication such an offensive provides, though, is the reassurance to international partners who have supported Ukraine up to this point in the war. As with France during the Revolutionary War, Ukrainian-allied investments have not been squandered. It is that same financial and military support that has enabled Ukraine to continue their resistance against Russian aggression and mount a swift and surprising incursion into Russian territory. The continued support will also likely dictate Ukrainian success in the current offensive and broader war. The recent act of resilience will provide additional fodder for those continuing to press for the continued support of Ukraine and will quiet those supporters-in-name but detractors-in-reality who have begun to call for appeasement with Russia.
So far, the free world has not wavered in its support for Ukraine against Russian aggression and Putin’s quest to rebuild the Russian empire. Zelenskyy’s bold actions in the last week have given the people of Ukraine and the world a renewed hope, like that of Washington traversing the Delaware or the US Marines raising the flag over Iwo Jima after a hard-fought victory.
In 1914, Russia’s Czar Nicholas II fled after several years of war, massive military losses and a collapse of morale at the front and at home; a general civilian strike and a military mutiny in Petrograd, the monarch’s authority collapsed. No one knows where Putin’s tipping point might be.

I’ve covered 10 Olympics over 32 years. These Paris Games outdid them all
With thrilling competition, spectacular venues and viral moments the paris games delivered..
5:54 PM on Aug 11, 2024 CDT
SAINT-DENIS, France ― Compared with the six-ways-from-Sunday bacchanal that kicked off the Paris Games , the closing ceremonies shouldn’t raise any righteous indignation. Unless you’re offended by “dreamlike, dystopian” stories about a time traveler from another planet who lands on Earth to find it pretty much like Charlton Heston did, only without the monkeys.
According to the program, the “Golden Voyager” takes back a few souvenirs excavated from these Games with the intent of recreating what transpired here over the last two weeks.
Good luck with that, Goldy.
The French pulled off an extravaganza that isn’t likely to be duplicated anytime soon. The facilities were grand as well as accessible, the weather gorgeous, athletes spectacular and the trains ran on time.

Juan Antonio Samaranch, who ran the International Olympic Committee for more than two decades, was famous for pronouncing each Olympics the “best ever.” Thomas Bach, the current president, only called this one “a magnificent stage.” Not good enough. None of the nine previous Olympics in my 32-year experience comes close.
Bill Hancock, who helps out the USOPC in his off-time, has worked every Summer Olympics since 1984 and would claim as many winters, too, if he hadn’t been otherwise occupied running the NCAA Tournament or the College Football Playoff.
He figured the scenery here would be nice. City of Lights, and all that.
But what about the logistics?
“Man,” Hancock said, “they hit the lights and the nuts and bolts.”
That left it up to the athletes, who didn’t disappoint, even if it wasn’t necessarily in a historic sense. Only 17 world records were broken, down from 20 in Tokyo and a high of 30 in 2008. An associate professor of applied sciences at the University of Birmingham told Sky News that we’ve probably reached a point of “diminishing returns” because of advances made in training since the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
“What we’re seeing now,” Thomas Brownlee told the site, “is that everyone’s kind of catching up and doing similar stuff.
“The secrets are out a little bit.”
Doesn’t mean the competition wasn’t as exhilarating as ever. Both the men’s and women’s gold-medal basketball games between the Americans and their hosts were barn-burners. Noah Lyles won the closest 100 meters in modern history . Katie Ledecky still rules the pool . Simone Biles reclaimed her throne and then crowned her successor, Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, in one of the Games’ most magnanimous gestures .
Related: Is the GOAT passing the torch? Simone Biles reflects on career, future after odd silver
In the medal count, a late kick at the tape by the U.S. earned it a tie with China at 40 golds, with the Americans leading overall medals, 126-91.
The rest of the world showed up, too. France’s Leon Marchand, who competed at Arizona State, made his home nation proud with four gold medals in swimming. Mijain Lopez, a 41-year-old Cuban wrestler, became the first athlete to win gold at five consecutive Olympics and retired on the spot. Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec ’s insouciance – a finger on the trigger, hand in his pocket – made him a man of a million memes.
And in a demonstration of the spirit the Olympics are supposed to be about, the table tennis teams from North and South Korea took selfies together on the medal stand.
The good vibes were good for ratings, which were up 76% over Tokyo, a victim of COVID and a bad time slot. An NBC representative told the Los Angeles Times that it expected ad revenues to far exceed its projections of $1.25 billion, making it the largest money-maker for any event in television history.
Of course, not everything was hearts and flowers. A court disallowed the appeal that had enabled Jordan Chiles to win bronze in the floor routine , the final indignity after the Spring gymnast had been harassed online for not giving it back. Algerian boxer Imane Khelif suffered such abuse from critics sure she must be a man , despite certified testing and evidence of a lifetime lived otherwise, she filed a complaint with Paris officials.
“I am a woman like any other,” she felt forced to testify. Actually, she’s a woman with a gold medal, and no one’s taking it.
The appeal of social media, I suppose, is it makes anyone and everyone an expert on everything. Anne Hidalgo, Paris’ mayor, issued a statement midway through the Games supporting Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the opening ceremonies after Jolly received death threats from viewers who interpreted some scenes as a blasphemous parody of the Last Supper. Paris 2024 officials subsequently apologized if anyone was offended, which was nice but unnecessary.
Turns out the scenes in question were a parody of “The Feast of the Gods,” a Dutch painting, not Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece.
Frankly, I thought the opening ceremonies were spectacular . Best ever, and I’m a sucker for these things. Better, for sure, than the closing, though it gets points for Tom Cruise’s drop-in and a cameo by Dallas’ Michael Johnson.
Related: Olympics opening ceremony defied the odds. Now it’s time for athletes to do the same
Otherwise the handoff of the Olympic flag from Paris’ mayor to Los Angeles’ went just fine, probably because it wasn’t choreographed by the U.S. men’s 4x100. LA will have a hard time picking up where Paris left off, though. Even all the anxiety about the swimmability of the Seine proved to be much ado-doo about nothing.
Just the same, I’m not taking a dip before coming home to the lovely wife. I’ll take their word for it. They got everything else right.

Vote: Who is the top Punter in Central Florida high school football in 2024?
Jeff gardenour | aug 9, 2024.
Special teams may not sound glorious, but make no mistake, punters are extremely important to a football team’s success.
Whether it’s flipping the field, pooching a ball inside the 20-yard line or just getting the offense out of trouble, punters play a vital role in keeping their team in the running for a victory. They are, indeed, special.
In Central Florida, great punters can be found everywhere. Some are even nationally recognized for their booming punts across the field.
We looked at schools in multiple counties in Central Florida and came up with 18 punters to watch this year.
Without further ado, here they are:
Logan Calder, Oviedo, Class of 2025: Seminole County standout and five-star punter is ranked No. 59 in the Kohl’s Professional Camps 2025 National Punter Rankings after a stellar summer in which he competed at the Kohl’s 2024 National Scholarship Camp in July. There, he scored 32 out of 36 points on field goals, 108.2 points on kickoffs and 96.65 points in punting. He has taken his skills to Oviedo after punting 19 times for a 30.0 yards-per-punt average, with a long of 62, and four inside the 20-yard line last year for Lake Howell. He has an offer from Warner University and is talking to Florida International University.
Jackson White, East River, Class of 2025: Orange County star received recognition as a 4.5-star kicker in the Kohl’s Professional Camps 2025 National Punter Rankings after a solid summer and punting 40 times for a 33.3 average, with a long of 51, and six inside the 20-yard-line last season for the Falcons. He also kicked a game-winning 49-yard field goal in this year’s spring game.
Owen Baylor, University High (Orange City), Class of 2025: Volusia County standout received recognition in the Kohl’s Professional Camps 2025 National Punter Rankings after a strong summer and punting 19 times for a 32.2 average, with a long of 52, in 2023 for the Titans. He also is one of Central Florida’s top placekickers.
William Prunty, Foundation Academy, Class of 2025: The Orange County private school star was one of the top punters in the state last season, punting 15 times for a whopping 41.87 average, with a long of 65 and seven inside the 20-yard-line.
Marcus Trout, Cocoa, Class of 2025: Brevard County kicking/punting specialist has taken his considerable skills to two-time defending Class 2S state champ Cocoa after punting 25 times for a 37.5 average, with a long of 60 and nine inside the 20-yard line for Holy Trinity Episcopal last year. He is ranked No. 64 in the Kohl’s Professional Camps 2025 National Kicker Rankings.
Grayson Wright, Timber Creek, Class of 2025: Good athlete (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) has a powerful leg, punting 19 times for a 36.95 average, with a long of 66 and four inside the 20-yard-line last year for the Wolves.
Dean Roberts, Titusville, Class of 2025: Another exceptional kicking/punting specialist from Brevard County, he punted 30 times for a 36.47 average, with a long of 55 and three inside the 20-yard line in 2023 for the Terriers, who made the state playoffs. He also has been recognized in the Kohl’s Professional Camps 2025 National Kicker Rankings.
Michael Wells, Apopka, Class of 2025: One of the area’s most consistent punters stayed busy in 2023, punting 38 times for a 35.82 average, with a long of 55 and 10 inside the 20-yard line for the Blue Darters, who made the state playoffs. He boomed a 58-yard field goal in this summer’s Pittsburgh State camp, and won the Jacksonville State punt camp.
Henry Wolff, Kissimmee Osceola, Class of 2027: Rising sophomore performed well last season for the traditional power Kowboys, punting 28 times for a 34.1 average, with a long of 53 and seven inside the 20-yard line. He also plays at wide receiver for Osceola, which made the state playoffs in 2023.
David Parks, Seminole High, Class of 2025: One of the most talented athletes (6-0, 205) in Central Florida, the Howard University commit boomed 26 punts for a 33.5 average, with a long of 44, for the Seminoles, who advanced to the state playoffs. He also plays multiple positions on offense.
Xavier Lherisse, Eau Gallie, Class of 2026: Superb defensive back also excels on special teams, having punted 26 times for a 33.2 average, with a long of 53 and seven inside the 20-yard line last year for the Commodores, who advanced to the state playoffs. He is ranked in the top 15 of the ESPN Top 100 Safeties of the Class of 2026. He has multiple offers, including Alabama, Clemson, Michigan and Ole Miss.
Ryder Bondurant, West Orange, Class of 2025: Rising senior has moved into the starting role after Kelvin Ramirez chose to focus on soccer this school year. As a sophomore in 2022, he compiled a 27.8 punting average, with a long of 46 for the Warriors.
Parker Perales, Lake Mary, Class of 2025: Exceptional all-around athlete has taken his considerable skills to state power Lake Mary after punting 15 times for a 29.5 average, with a long of 40 and three inside the 20-yard line in 2023 for Lake Brantley.
Charlie Hyman, Boone, Class of 2025: Strong, physical player (6-3, 210) has transferred to Boone after punting 16 times for a 28.9 average, with a long of 51 and five inside the 20-yard-line for Cornerstone Charter last year. He also will play linebacker and defensive end.
Andrew Harris, Horizon, Class of 2025: When not zipping passes as quarterback, this multi-talented athlete (6-2, 175) is punting for the Hawks, having punted 38 times for a 27.9 average, with a long of 51 and four inside the 20-yard-line last season.
Lucas Paul, Space Coast (Cocoa), Class of Class of 2025: Consistent special teams player punted 31 times for a 27.4 average, with a long of 52 and two inside the 20-yard line for the Vipers last year. He also plays running back.
Jackson Baker, Winter Springs, Class of 2026: Seminole County special teams athlete and rising junior punted 25 times for a 26.3 average last season for the Bears.
Liam Toobin, Lake Highland Prep, Class of 2026: Tall, strong special teams athlete (6-4, 200) punted 21 times for a 25.9 average, with a long of 45, for the Highlanders in 2023.

Tim Walz’s journey from high school football coach to VP candidate
Walz, formerly a little-known Midwestern governor, faces the urgent task of introducing himself to the country with only about three months until Election Day.
Some 20 years ago, a lawyer named Kamala Harris won her first political race, becoming the first Black and South Asian woman elected district attorney of San Francisco in 2003 after campaigning on criminal justice policy changes, including opposition to the death penalty.
Halfway across the country, in Mankato, Minn., a high school teacher named Tim Walz had a lower-profile but no less fraught daily mandate: overseeing his social studies classes, coaching the football team and occasionally wrangling the lunchroom .
The unlikely convergence of Harris’s and Walz’s paths would take place more than two decades later, with the news Tuesday that Harris had selected Walz , now the governor of Minnesota, to be her running mate.
The much-anticipated decision creates a ticket with two candidates from strikingly different backgrounds: Harris, 59, is Black and Indian American and spent much of her career as an attorney and prosecutor in deep-blue California. Meanwhile, Walz, 60, is a White veteran and hunter who has spent most of his life in rural Nebraska and Minnesota — and is the first Democratic vice-presidential pick since 1964 who did not go to law school.
2024 presidential election
Walz’s foray into politics came later in life: Born and raised in rural Nebraska, after high school he enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he would serve for the next 24 years. After losing his father to lung cancer at age 19 — which he would later say shaped his views on health care — Walz enrolled in Chadron State College in Nebraska and graduated with a teaching degree in 1989.
Walz met his future wife, Gwen, while teaching after college, and they moved in 1996 to her home state of Minnesota. He would stay at Mankato West High School as a teacher and football coach for the next decade or so, until he decided to run for public office — reportedly motivated to do so after he and some students were denied entry to a 2004 George W. Bush campaign event because organizers found out they were Democrats.
In 2006, Walz won the race to represent Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District, flipping a Republican seat in a rural part of the state.
In Congress, Walz positioned himself as a rare moderate Democrat who was a strong supporter of gun rights, earning him an A rating from the National Rifle Association. In his freshman year, he praised then-President George W. Bush for proposing to expand the Army National Guard forces but also criticized Bush for his lack of a clear mission in the Iraq War and opposed his plan to send additional U.S. troops to Iraq.
“As the mission in Iraq has evolved from [finding] weapons of mass destruction to forming a democratic government to now just stabilizing to the point where the Iraqis can take over, the president has consistently been wrong on the plan on this and … I have deep concerns in that because the devil is in the details,” Walz said in 2007. “Giving us what the end may look like is one thing but actually delivering those — we need some accountability on that.”
Walz would win reelection to his seat five more times before leaving the House to run for governor. In the 2018 gubernatorial race, Walz defeated his Republican opponent by more than 10 percentage points.
By then, Walz had shifted to the left on several key issues, including on guns. After the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., Walz said his then-17-year-old daughter, Hope, urged him to do more to prevent gun violence. On the campaign trail as he ran for governor that year, Walz said he in turn donated all the money he had ever taken from the NRA to charity and publicly pushed for background checks and eliminating reciprocal-carry agreements between states.
“I know basic gun safety isn’t a threat to my rights. It’s about keeping our kids safe,” Walz said last month about his evolution on the issue. “I had an A rating from the NRA. Now I get straight F’s. And I sleep just fine.”
Hope, now 23, has since made frequent appearances in videos posted to Walz’s social media accounts. In a recent MSNBC interview on Harris’s ascent, Walz said his daughter had told him it was “a brat summer” and he joked he didn’t know what she meant “but I’m sure it’s a good thing” — a reference to pop singer Charli XCX’s album that Democrats have embraced as they boost Harris to young voters.
In 2022, Walz handily won reelection to his second term while Democrats also flipped the state Senate, securing a trifecta for Democrats in St. Paul that has allowed them to pass liberal priorities. Democrats under Walz’s governorship have enshrined the right to abortion , allowed undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver’s license, expanded background checks for gun transfers, legalized recreational marijuana and offered protections for people seeking or providing gender-affirming health care.
Walz also signed an executive order that removes the college degree requirement for 75 percent of Minnesota’s state jobs, a move that garnered bipartisan support and several states have also adopted. Democrats have also offered funding for free meals at schools and free college tuition for students from low-income families in Minnesota.
Asked in a July 28 interview with CNN if such policies would be fodder for conservative attacks, Walz responded sarcastically: “What a monster. Kids are eating and having full bellies, so they can go learn, and women are making their own health-care decisions.”
He later added: “So, if that’s where they want to label me, I’m more than happy to take the [liberal] label.”
In the days after President Biden announced he would no longer seek reelection , Walz made numerous appearances on television, and his folksy demeanor and willingness to use plain language to criticize former president Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) helped catapult him onto Harris’s vice-presidential shortlist. In interviews, Walz cast Trump and Vance as not just a threat to democracy but, simply, “weird,” an attack that quickly caught on for Democrats and that struck a nerve for Republicans.
“Who’s asking for this crazy stuff? Who’s asking to raise the price of insulin? Who’s asking to get rid of birth control? … Who’s sitting in a bar in Racine, Wisconsin, saying, ‘You know what we really need? We need to ban “Animal Farm.”’ Nobody is!” Walz told MSNBC last month , later adding: “Yes, they’re weird. They prove that every day. It’s an observation.”
Walz, formerly a little-known Midwestern governor, now faces the urgent task of introducing himself to the country with only about three months until Election Day. Harris and Walz held their first rally together on Tuesday in Philadelphia, the first stop in a four-day tour of battleground states.
For Walz, the timing will coincide with the “excitement in the air” that the start of a new school year brings, he said in a video posted last week .
“As a football coach, we’re back on offense,” Walz said, referring to Democratic optimism. “Vice President Harris is bringing the energy, making sure she’s going to be there to protect the democracy and get folks fired up, making sure we’re protecting reproductive rights, working for the middle class and bringing back some joy to our politics — so get out there, feel the excitement, get engaged.”

‘Everybody gets amped up’: Idaho’s experienced defense gains edge in first scrimmage
MOSCOW, Idaho – The hitters were ahead of the pitchers. And the catchers. And the runners.
In Idaho’s first scrimmage at preseason camp Thursday, the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 defenses dominated their counterparts on offense early.
The Vandals’ offense had enough moments later in the 90-plus play scrimmage to assure Idaho’s coach Jason Eck that he has players on both sides of the ball. Sophomore kicker Cameron Pope’s 45-yard field goal to conclude the workout and save his teammates from up-downs suggests the kicking game is in good hands, but this was a day for the black shirts.
The top three defenses all forced three-and-outs on their opening series, “and there was some really good red-zone defense from the ones,” Eck said.
Redshirt freshman Zach Johnson said the defense “was flying around.”
The tackling was live – just ask redshirt freshman receiver Emmerson Cortez-Menjivar, who was hit by freshman and former East Valley High School standout Diezel Wilkinson after catching a pass across the middle from second-team quarterback Jack Wagner and needed attention from the trainers.
Also, officials calling penalties gave the day a game-like feel.
“Everybody gets excited. Everybody gets amped up,” Johnson said. “There was none of this stuff in practice where you can argue about whether something was a play or not.”
Wagner led the No. 2 offense to a 23-yard field goal on a series highlighted by his 48-yard sprint up the middle from his 32-yard line.
“He’s really fast,” Eck said. “He’s probably our fastest quarterback.”
First-team quarterback Jack Layne also connected on a 20-yard reception with redshirt freshman receiver Mark Hamper, who beat single coverage from Andrew Marshall to set up a touchdown. Layne followed with a run up the middle on third down from the 15-yard line to keep the drive alive, and handed off to redshirt freshman running back Art Williams, who carried for a short-yardage score.
“That was all offensive line,” Williams said of his touchdown.
“Art really ran well,” Eck said. “He got the offense going.”
After practice, Williams exited the field with Idaho’s daily practice award, the Vandal battle ax.
Overall, however, the defenses prevailed on seven series. The first-team offense scored a pair of touchdowns. The third-team offense accounted for another as redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Josifek capped a 65-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Tony Harste. The second-team offense got its field goal.
Idaho’s newest player, tight end Mike Martinez, who late last week joined from UCLA following two years out of football, ran with the second-team offense during the scrimmage but was not targeted with any passes
Senior starting safety Kyrin Beachem returned from a hamstring injury to make an interception in a 7-on-7 session before the scrimmage.
But redshirt junior defensive lineman Aamari Notice sat out practice with an injury. Eck said his return is probably day-to-day.
“We have got some people banged up,” Eck said.
Hydropower remains essential to affordable, reliable electricity in Idaho
We all love Idaho for its natural beauty, homegrown agriculture and great outdoor recreation.
Ohio State matchup awaits former Columbus-area high school football players
Several central Ohio athletes should contribute to Ohio State 's pursuit of Big Ten and national championships.
Former area high school football players on the Buckeyes include the Pickerington trio of junior defensive end Jack Sawyer (North), junior cornerback Lorenzo Styles Jr. (Central) and Styles' sophomore brother, Sonny, who plays safety and also went to Central. Lorenzo Jr. is a transfer from Notre Dame.
Other locals include seniors Quinton Burke (Lancaster, OL), Patrick Gurd (New Albany, TE), Ty Hamilton (Pickerington Central, DT) and Chad Ray (Dublin Scioto, QB); juniors Collin Johnson (New Albany, LS), Casey Magyar (Dublin Coffman, K), Jace Middleton (Olentangy, TE), Austin Snyder (Groveport, K) and Toby Wilson (Olentangy, OL); sophomores David Adolph (Dublin Jerome, WR) and Gabe Powers (Marysville, LB); and freshmen Ryan Rudzinski (Watterson, S) and Will Smith Jr. (Dublin Coffman, DL).
In further proof that there's plenty of high-level high school football talent in the Columbus area, several local athletes should play major roles for Ohio State opponents this season.
That includes wide receiver Kaden Saunders, a redshirt freshman at Penn State. A 2022 graduate of Westerville South, Saunders appeared in three games last season for the Nittany Lions.
“He had a pretty good spring and a pretty good preseason,” South coach Matthew Christ said. “He’s certainly in the mix. He’ll have opportunities to play early on and hopefully he’s ready to take advantage and run with those.”
As a senior at South, Saunders had 392 receiving yards and 324 rushing yards. He shared OCC-Capital Offensive Player of the Year honors with Big Walnut running back Nate Severs and was first-team all-state and all-district in Division II.
Ohio State hosts Penn State on Oct. 21.
“If you grew up in and near Columbus, playing against the Buckeyes is going to be a pretty special opportunity and environment every time,” Christ said.
Here are other central Ohio players on the rosters of Ohio State opponents this fall:
Saturday at Indiana
- Isaiah Johnson (London, LB, redshirt freshman)
- Carter Smith (Olentangy Liberty, OL, redshirt freshman)
The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Smith appeared in two games for Indiana last season, making his collegiate debut against Ohio State. He was first-team all-state, all-district and all-OCC-Central as a senior at Liberty.
“He’s big, he’s athletic (and) he’s a hard worker,” said first-year Liberty coach John Sansbury , who was an assistant when Smith played for the Patriots. “I think he’ll have a great year. It sounds like he had a great spring and he has all kinds of potential to be a big-time Division I football player.”
Sept. 9 vs. Youngstown State
- Hunter Allen (Canal Winchester, DL, junior)
- Isaiah Crozier (Pickerington Central, DB, freshman)
- Aboubakare Dabo (Westland, DL, junior)
- Keon Freeman (Whitehall-Yearling, LB, senior)
- T.J. Fulgham (Circleville, OL, freshman)
- David Metzler (Hilliard Bradley, OL, junior)
- Jordan Rudolph (Olentangy Orange, DB, freshman)
- John Ruh (Licking Heights, LS, sophomore)
- Makai Shahid (Gahanna Lincoln, DB, freshman)
- Joe Trent (Dublin Scioto, WR, sophomore)
Bradley coach Mike LoParo expects Metzler, who is 6-5 and 310 pounds, to have a solid season for the Penguins, a Football Championship Subdivision program. Metzler is a 2020 graduate of Bradley.
“He started at left tackle last year and they moved him to left guard,” LoParo said. “David has really good feet.”
Sept. 16 vs. Western Kentucky
- Craig Burt (Centennial, WR, redshirt senior)
Sept. 23 at Notre Dame
- Ben Krimm (Upper Arlington, P, graduate student)
- Zac Yoakam (Upper Arlington, K, sophomore)
Oct. 14 at Purdue
- Owen Davis (North Union, LB, freshman)
- Mershawn Rice (Reynoldsburg, WR, redshirt senior)
As a senior at Reynoldsburg in 2018, Rice was second-team all-state and first-team all-district in Division I, along with first-team all-OCC-Ohio. Last season with Purdue, he had 23 receptions for 283 yards and one touchdown.
Oct. 28 at Wisconsin
- Joe Huber (Dublin Jerome, OL, redshirt junior)
- Rodas Johnson (DeSales, DE, redshirt senior)
- Isaiah Mullens (Harvest Prep, DE, graduate student)
- Manny Mullens (Harvest Prep, DE, sophomore)
A 2019 graduate of DeSales, Johnson is expected to be a key contributor for the Badgers. He appeared in all 13 games last season, including 10 starts, and recorded 23 tackles, six tackles for loss and one sack.
“I’ve had Rodas talk to a couple of our youngers players on what it’s like to play at the next level,” DeSales coach Ryan Wiggins said. “He’s doing really well at Wisconsin. He’s one of their best defensive linemen and he’s excited to hopefully have a great year.”
Isaiah and Manny Mullens are brothers. Wisconsin is coached by former Ohio State and Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell, a 1992 DeSales graduate who played nose guard for the Buckeyes.
Nov. 4 at Rutgers
- Kwabena Asamoah (Pickerington Central, OL, sophomore)
Nov. 11 vs. Michigan State
- Michael O’Shaughnessy (New Albany, P, redshirt senior)
Nov. 18 vs. Minnesota
- Jacob Lewis (Olentangy Berlin, K, redshirt junior)
- Devon Williams (Dublin Coffman, LB, redshirt sophomore)
Nov. 25 at Michigan
Joey Velazquez is a 2019 graduate of DeSales and a graduate student at Michigan. A linebacker and key contributor on special teams, he also is an outfielder on the Wolverines' baseball team.
“That’s kind of neat,” Wiggins said. “You don’t see too many two-sport (college) athletes anymore. It’s pretty neat when you get to think of the experiences he’s had over the last few years in multiple sports at a high level.”
