Great Bike Tour of the Baltics (fully guided from Vilnius to Tallinn 2024)

It was a really interesting and amazing experience especially for me since where I live there are no so many bicycle lanes. Further to this it was amazing to drive in the forest and in the middle of the nature.

Sasa Tour Guide and Andro the driver were great. They took care of the group with their jovial attitude and ensured that individual's needs were met. They provided easy to follow directions and kept the group together. There were occasions when things would have gone wrong but Sasa and Andro ensured that they are there on every step along the way to make it trouble-free and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend intrepid tours and would consider future tours through Intrepid.

This trip was all about the biking, and without an excellent guide, the trip could have tanked easily. Instead, we had the great fortune to have Minda at the lead. He was kind, intouch with the group, enthusiastic, supportive and fun. He was so knowledgeable about every place we went and each tidbit he imparted came right from his soul. As a result, the entire group was calm, relaxed and up for the adventure. I can not say enough about Minda Now, the trip itself is challenging, beautiful, and exceeded my expectations.

Cycling in the Balkans ( 4 Countries Albania-North Macedonia-Kosovo-Montenegro)

Overall it was a good experience. the trour was excellent, however the organisers made some inappropriate decisions. they tried to book those of us who had paid single supplements into sharing rooms. BAD! they also moved us from one hotel to another when it was an off day which totally interrupted our experience. When they moved us in Kotor, they moved the single people to a hotel 5.5 km away from the town which meant we were stuck there! BAD. the tour guide was also poor at communicating and told us things that were not accurate at all. Communication was also last minute and did not give us time to adjust our expectations. I did not trust what we had paid for and what we got The route also changed according to the outlined provided at the start, so there were also disappointments with the distance and climbing cycled. POOR.

Fantastic trip. Hotels were tremendous, especially the meal in the hotel in Saint Florent-le-Vieil. Maps were good though I used my app Bikemap.net, to act as a Sat Nav. A couple of hiccups with luggaeew but minor in comparison with holiday organisation. Would certainly recommend.

Cycling tours & trips in europe reviews.

Although the "biking" was not on my bucket list (was talked into the trip by our brother/sister-in-law), but we had a very great time! Mindaugas was a great guide, and our driver was also great. The hotels were fine, the food was excellent, and the biking was better than I'd expected! Our fellow companions were delightful. The history and tours of the Baltic countries was wonderful. It would have been nice to have had a microphone hook-up during our guided walking tours in order to hear all the information. It would have been nice to be able to buy t-shirts (Mindaugas wore a few) that displayed a map of the tour. I think it would have been nice if we could have ordered them before or after the trip. Is it possible to do so now? Otherwise, I'd never done anything like this before, and may do it again at some point.

The Vipava Valley is an area of outstanding beauty, in the northeast corner of Slovenia, close to Italy.

Cycling here is great year around, offering a multitude of routes, local traditions and wine and food options . Did you know that two of Slovenia’s ten Michelin starred restaurants are in the Vipava Valley?

The scenic hills are perfect for seasoned cyclists, and e-bikes make them accessible to all. The climbs up Mt Nanos, the Trnovo Plateau and the Banjšice Plateau are great targets for road cyclists , while these slopes are also home to spectacular trails for mountain bikers .  Local guides are familiar with the best routes and can organise tours and transport to the starting points of cycling routes.

Vipava Valley also offers superb refuelling options, and there are some excellent pit stops on friendly agritourism farms  and  wine cellars.

Off the bike, Vipava Valley is full of beautiful places to stay, including the ancient town of Vipava , lovely Ajdovščina with its extraordinary Roman legacy, the medieval town of Vipavski Križ and Nova Gorica with its parks, roses and cultural monuments.

Best spring cycling destinations

The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca has been extremely popular with holidaymakers over the last 50 years or so. Over the last twenty years, the island has developed its offer, and helped along by Team Sky’s (now Team Ineos) regular training camps, it is now considered to be one of the best places to cycle in Europe.

As with so many parts of Spain, Mallorca boasts 300 days of sunshine a year and combined with mild winters and easy accessibility from main European cities, it is seen as the number one ‘go to’ location for many cyclists, and one of the most suggested cycling regions for anyone seeking recommendations. It is certainly the most visited destination guide on www.epicroadrides.com, which is quite some achievement when you consider that there are no UCI WorldTour stage races held on the island.

For the amateur cyclist who wants to cycle Europe, there is an ideal mix of terrain, from the Tramuntana mountain range in the west to the flat but very scenic roads in the south and east. Added to that, of course, you can test yourself on the same stretches of road that the professionals from Team Ineos, Movistar and countless other teams ride on whilst at their training camps.

The climbs of Sa Calobra and Puig Major, while not as steep as the mountains you would find in mainland Europe, are extremely popular and packed with cyclists in the high season. The Mallorca 312 (a 312-kilometre sportive) is going from strength to strength and takes place every April. It all makes for one of the best cycling holidays in Europe, and one of the best cycling destinations in the world.

Our in-depth guide to Mallorca (which includes links to related route guides and articles).

The Andratx to Banyalbufar section of the Big Dadd route with sea views and perfect road surface, Mallorca

If Mallorca is where the professional cyclists train and hold their training camps, then Girona is the city where a disproportionate amount of them live. Further north than Mallorca, and within touching distance of the Pyrenees, you would be hard-pressed not to spot a professional cyclist as you take to the super smooth and virtually traffic-free Catalonian roads.

First made famous by Lance Armstrong, who lived in the city for many years, a lot of professionals from outside of Europe now base themselves in the area as geographically it affords easy access to the premier races on the UCI race calendar in neighbouring France and Italy.

As you walk through the streets of Girona’s old town, you can see the cycling influence: restaurants and cafés (some owned by ex-professionals) are intermingled with high quality bike rental, tour and cycling service companies. It oozes chic sophistication and with fantastic, quiet roads its undoubtedly one of the best places to cycle.

There is a mix of terrain starting from gentle climbs, such as the popular Els Àngels , to the more arduous tests of Mare de Déu del Mont and the well-known Rocacorba . Stray a little further to the north west as you hit the front ranges of the Pyrenees and the climbs get more demanding.

Many would say that Girona is one of the very best road cycling destinations in Europe.

Our in-depth guide to Girona (which includes links to related route guides and articles).

Mare De Déu Del Mont Girona, Costa Brava, Spain

Costa Daurada

The Costa Daurada (Golden Coast) sits just south of Barcelona on Spain’s eastern coast and is certainly less famous than Mallorca and Girona.

The area is working hard to build its reputation and at the moment still remains a pretty well-kept secret – but given its fantastic climate, roads and cycling routes, we’re not sure it will stay that way for too much longer, and may soon be part of the discussions when looking at the best cycling holidays Europe has to offer.

If you don’t like crowded roads and want to get away from it all then the Costa Daurada and its long coastline is well worth a closer look. It is extremely accessible being served by both Barcelona airports as well as nearby Tarragona. Two professional teams, Bahrain Merida and UAE Emirates, have held training camps in the area and there are now more and more cyclo-tourists riding the roads around Cambrils and Salou.

The resort is an ideal place to clock up those pre-season base miles and whilst there are many flat roads adjacent to the coast, there is no shortage of climbs in the Serra de Montsant, Muntanyes de Priorat , Mussara and Prades areas. Most of the ascents are under 10 kilometres in length at manageable gradients of between 3% and 6%.

So, if you’re looking at cycling holidays abroad this year, the Costa Daurada is definitely worth a look before it gets wider recognition as one of the best European cycling destinations, and the crowds begin to descend.

Our in-depth guide to Costa Daurada (which includes links to related route guides and articles). We’ll also give a little shout-out for the nearby Terres de l’Ebre region , just to the south of the Costa Daurada and the Barcelona region just to the north. Definitely worth a look if you’re interested in the Costa Daurada!

The Algarve offers some of the best cycling holidays in Europe thanks to its diverse terrain, warm climate, and quiet roads.

While it might not (yet) be the most popular road cycling location in Europe, it is slowly growing in reputation, not least thanks to some WorldTour and ProTeams using the region for their training camps. This year alone, both Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team (WorldTour) and Human Powered Health (UCI ProTeam) held their pre-season training camps here.

The Algarve borders Spain in the east and lies on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean to the west, so the climate is temperate all year round, although summer can be extremely hot, reaching temperatures of 20°C first thing in the morning! That’s why spring is probably a better bet, as temperatures are more manageable throughout the day, yet you don’t have to fight for hotels or space on the roads with tourists that visit during the high season for the beaches.

In terms of cycling, there are decent-sized mountains inland, with the most famous climb being the Foia climb in the Serra de Monchique. It is often used in the professional stage race, Volta ao Algarve, which is held on an annual basis, usually in mid-February, and attracts some of the best professional cyclists in the world. The organisers also put on a sportive on the same weekend as the professional race, and we’ve covered this and two other key events, (including a mountain biking race) in our article here .

Elsewhere there are more rolling hills to contend with, and for those who prefer flatter routes, we recommend staying near the coast. There are also plenty of bike hire options if you don’t fancy taking your own.

If you’re looking for the best cycling locations Europe has to offer, the Algarve certainly won’t disappoint.

Best summer cycling destinations

French alps.

People have been cycling through Europe, and in particular the French Alps, from time immemorial. However, the ever-increasing publicity surrounding the Tour de France and the willingness for amateur cyclists to punish themselves on these fabled slopes ensures that they will never lose their appeal.

Excitingly, as part of a continuous improvement process in the area, a very ambitious ‘made for cyclists’ project has recently been launched. Entitled the ‘Via 3 Vallées’ project the three ski resorts, south of Moûtiers, namely Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens are being linked by the creation of asphalt mountain roads for the exclusive use of cyclists! So it won’t just be one of the best places to bike in Europe anymore, it will also offer some of the best road cycling in Europe too.

Stages one and two have now been completed which means that you can cycle from the altiport at Courchevel (circa 2,000 metres) up and over the Col de la Loze on a brand new 6-kilometre road. This incidentally increases the height of the Loze to 2,304 metres meaning it will be the 11th highest col in France.

Then, at the end of 2019, another new ‘cyclist only’ road (7.5 kilometres) down the other side to Méribel was completed, meaning that the two resorts are now connected by bicycle. This has created a superb 62-kilometre circular loop (1,970 metres) starting and finishing in Les Allues and incorporating the ‘new’ Col de la Loze and the new roads.

The final part of the project will see another ‘cyclist only’ road between the Col de la Loze and the Val Thorens ski station – a cyclist’s dream! So, if you’re thinking of where to go this year, this really could be one of Europe’s best places for cycling holidays!

Road up the Ornon valley

Nice has been synonymous with cycling for over a hundred years, indeed it was in 1906 that the fourth edition of the Tour de France visited the capital of the Côte d’Azur. It’s been back many times and in 2024, Nice will host the final stage (which is being moved from Paris due to the 2024 Olympics).

The best European cycling holidays combine a pleasant climate, great culture and top-quality cuisine – and Nice is famed for all three (along with its stunning coastline).

Other than a great coastline bike path that runs from Nice’s port to Antibes, much of the area is dominated by big climbs as you leave the city and head for the hills. To the north west lies the Parc Naturel Régional des Préalpes d’Azur where you will be able to test your climbing legs on the 19-kilometre ascent of the Col de Vence .

Head out to the east, on undulating terrain, in the direction of Monaco and the Italian border and you will eventually reach the seaside town of Menton. If you then traverse due north into the hills of the Alpes-Maritime you can then climb the Col de la Madone (Lance Armstrong’s training climb) and the nearby, hairpin-laden Col de Braus as well as the aforementioned Turini .

If you want some of the best cycling Europe can offer, with some tough challenges, then Nice is worth checking out.

When you visit a town with a reputation for downhill skiing you know beforehand what sort of terrain you are likely to encounter! Situated in northern Italy and very close to the border with Switzerland, Bormio transforms itself in the late spring and summer months into a mecca for cyclists (don’t arrive too early in the year – many of the passes don’t usually open until May/June!). It’s highly recommended as one of the best cycling trips in Europe.

Top of the bill is the legendary Passo dello Stelvio which sits on the edge of the town. The description by the Italian newspaper La Gazetta dello Sport probably best sums up the climb when it wrote that the mountain was ‘a serpent of asphalt, five tunnels, 21.5 kilometres and 1541 metres of climbing’.

That said, the north eastern ascent of the mountain from the village of Prato is generally regarded as the classic ascent due to the 48-hairpin bends that are contained within the 25 kilometres of vertical ascent. It is probably the most photographed mountain in cycling history. (There is also a third ascent of the Stelvio available starting in Switzerland via the Umbrail Pass ).

Also within cycling distance of Bormio are the famous climbs of the Passo Gavia and the super hard Passo del Mortirolo , both steeped in Giro d’Italia folklore. Stage 18 of the 2020 Giro d’Italia saw the peloton climb the Stelvio (from Prato) before scaling the hairpin-packed and spectacular Torri di Fraele to finish by the Cancano dam .

A truly incredible region with the potential of making it one of the best cycling holidays in the world.

Ever since the Innsbruck Road World Championships in 2018, Austria has seen more interest as a destination for road bike holidays in Europe. Testing gradients and the scenic views are just two of many reasons Austria should be on your list of cycling destinations in Europe to visit.

Austria lets you tailor your trip to your preferred style of riding. If you like mountains, then head west, where there are cols here to rival those in France and Italy. If heat is a deciding factor in your Europe cycling tours, then head to the east, particularly around Vienna, where it is also flatter.

The ideal time to visit Austria is between June and September, particularly if you’re wanting to visit the mountains where outside of these months you might experience some road closures due to snow. The fantastic scenery and variety of terrain make Austria one of the best cycling trips Europe has tucked away – though the growing popularity means it can’t be considered a hidden gem for much longer.

Our in-depth guide to Austria (which includes links to related route guides and articles). In this article, John Vincent shares his Salzkammergut cycling tour itinerary or, if you’re looking for places to stay in the mountains but want a destination a little less-known than France, read our article on the best places to stay in the Alps.

Slovenia is a fantastic destination, one of the best places for cycling holidays in Europe, and it’s also recognised as the continent’s most sustainable country. It’s somewhere cycling is encouraged as both a mode of transport and for tourism.

Slovenia is a country full of hidden gems, and with the rise of the strength of Slovenian riders in the professional peloton like Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič, it’s somewhere that more and more cyclists are considering for their European cycling tours and holidays.

Slovenia does have a lot to offer, particularly in the summer. Ride along dedicated cycle paths and discover gorgeous places like the Vipava Valley , Lake Bled, home to blue and green lagoons and traditional castles and architecture. Alternatively, challenge yourself in the Julian Alps .

Best autumn and winter cycling destinations

Another new winter cycling destination has emerged as Cyprus starts to gear up to welcome more and more cyclists to the island. Driven by a national push to encourage more people to use bicycles as a means of reducing their carbon footprint, a cycling culture is clearly developing. For winter cycling trips, Europe’s best destinations offer over 300 days of sunshine – and with Cyprus averaging 326 days each year, there’s a lot to like!

The island has a diverse selection of terrain, from flatlands in the east to undulating terrain in the south. The area around the Troodos mountain range is arguably the best place for cycling on the island, offering an opportunity for the climbers to test their legs.

In addition to the warm weather, an added bonus due to the particular climate of the region is that there is little or no wind on the island. If you normally spend your winter in colder climes, this is a huge plus point!

As a popular holiday destination, there is a good selection of quality hotels, restaurants and shops, and there are now established cycle routes and bike rental outlets in all the main towns and cities such as Larnaca, Nicosia, Limassol and Paphos.

Definitely one to consider for 2024 if you’re looking at different places to go cycling.

cyprus is one of our best cycling destinations

Costa Almeria

Costa Almeria is a gem of a hidden cycling destination! A coastal province quietly tucked away on Spain’s southern coast between the commercialised areas of the Costa Blanca (e.g. Alicante and Benidorm) and the Costa del Sol (Marbella and Malaga), with its own microclimate and average temperatures of between 16 and 22 degrees in the winter months.

It’s a perfect winter cycling destination in Europe.

Sitting by the sea and the nearby Parque Natural del Cabo de Gata-Níjar and surrounded by the Sierra Filabres mountain range, you will find the holiday resort of Mójacar and a good range of hotels, restaurants and shops. Venture west into the hills, and you will have the super smooth roads to test your legs as you climb the Sierra Bedar and the Puerto de la Virgen (a pre-season favourite hill climb test for the professionals).

Heading further west to the town of Gérgal, you can sample two ‘Especial’ climbs made famous by the Vuelta a España, the Alto de Velefique (Almeria’s own Alpe d’Huez) and the 30-kilometre-long climb to the giant observatories at Calar Alto . This area sits alongside the Desierto de Tabernas, the only true desert in mainland Europe and the one made famous by Clint Eastwood in the Spaghetti Western movies.

A word of warning – don’t be alarmed if you don’t see a car or another person for miles! This is a sparsely populated part of Spain, and in reality, when you get into the hills, it’s just like riding on closed roads. In our view, it’s more than worthy of being called one of the best road cycling holidays in Europe.

Gran Canaria

The Canary Island resort of Gran Canaria has quickly earned a reputation as an excellent new cycling destination in Europe and is a great choice for winter cycling holidays. Sitting just 100 kilometres off the northwestern coast of Africa, it boasts some 3,000 hours of sunshine each year – that’s 8 hours per day on average!

But there’s much more to it than the weather, as the island has everything required to get you in shape for the forthcoming season. Challenging climbs, good quality road surfaces, stunning coastal roads, and deep canyons. The added advantage of it being a popular holiday destination also means that hotels, shops and restaurants are in plentiful supply, particularly on the coast.

The Vuelta a España has, in recent years, visited the island and raced to a stage finish at the summit of the popular Pico de las Nieves (Snow Peak), which at 1,950 metres is the highest point on the island.

One of the other highlights of Gran Canaria is the infamous Valley of Tears, probably the most revered climb on the island. It’s a brutal climb with sections at 25% and is clearly steep enough to test anyone’s legs!

It’s fair to say that Gran Canaria is thought of by many as one of the best road cycling destinations out there.

We scouted seven best bike tours in Europe with varying difficulty levels, from an easy ride through France’s Champagne region to an advanced route through Norwegian fjords.

Europe is the birthplace of the bicycle, though exactly where it was first invented is up for debate (the French contend the inventor was a Frenchman, the English say he was one of theirs, and the Scots throw in a claim, too). Cycling culture runs deep in Europe, making it one of the best destinations for a two-wheeled tour. The locals will not only respect you on the road, they’ll also embrace you in the pub, taverna, or café for taking the time to explore their countries in such a civilized manner.

The trips listed below are fully supported, meaning they include vehicles en route to pick you up if you need help and mechanics to fix your bike if it breaks. The tour guides have extensive knowledge of the area and can, if necessary, offer encouragement during a long day. Here are six trips to put on your calendar.

The Napoleon Expedition

How's this for a European vacation: Follow the route of Napoleon's 1812 Russian Campaign on two wheels.

Paris to Moscow: Ride & Seek Bicycle Adventures

This epic 45-day, 2,736-mile route from Ride & Seek Bicycle Adventures roughly traces Napoleon’s 1812 Russian Campaign. It begins in Paris with a spin down the Champs-Élysées, followed by aperitifs under the shadow of the Arc de Triomphe before departing for Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Russia—through rolling vineyards, deep forests, medieval villages, and historic cities. As you enter Moscow on the last day, know that you’re guaranteed a much warmer welcome than the diminutive Corsican received when he triumphantly ended his march in Red Square. Note: If 45 days are more than you can commit to, the tour is composed of six one-week stages, so you can do as many (or as few) as you like.

Details: $14,745 for entire tour, $2,605 for each stage; prices based on double occupancy. Fully supported/guided. Includes breakfasts, some lunches, and most dinners.

l’Etape du Tour

best biking tours in europe

France: Trek Travel

Each year since 1993, more than 10,000 cyclists have registered for l’Etape du Tour, a one-day event that allows amateurs to ride one of the mountain stages of that year’s Tour de France while the pros have a rest day. On this five- or seven-day guided tour from Trek Travel , each day features routes that were stages in previous Tours, culminating in a guaranteed spot in l’Etape du Tour, which in 2015 will be a 87-mile day climbing Col de Chaussy, Col de la Croix de Fer, Col du Mollard, and a summit finish at La Toussuire. This year, Trek team rider and 2010 Tour de France winner Andy Schleck will ride along with guests for the entire week.

Details: $4,699 for seven days, $4,199 for five days per person; prices based on double occupancy. Fully supported/guided. Includes breakfasts, some lunches, and most dinners.

Land’s End to John O’Groats

best biking tours in europe

United Kingdom: Peak Tours

Starting from the very southwest tip of England and ending almost 1,000 miles away in the northeast reaches of Scotland, this 14-day ride from  Peak Tours  rolls through patchwork-quilt farmlands in the south, craggy mountains and pristine lakes of the Lake District, and the barren moors of northern Scotland. Whenever possible, the route avoids main roads in favor of lovely flowered country lanes and quiet back roads that lead to out-of-the-way villages and centuries-old inns.

Details:  $2,400 to $3,486, depending on choice of accommodations. Fully supported. Includes all breakfasts and lunches; dinners are on your own.

The Danube

best biking tours in europe

Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary:  Experience Plus

There’s a good reason the Danube River is one of the most popular rides in Europe: Almost anyone can do it. There are no hills to speak of, and most of the riding is on a network of paved paths that follow the river as it passes through the Eastern European countryside and two of Europe’s most storied capitals, Vienna and Budapest (there’s a rest day in Vienna). This 13-day, 526-mile ride (named by National Geographic Traveler as one of the “50 Tours of a Lifetime”) from Experience Plus  begins in Germany and winds past impressive Bavarian monasteries, verdant Austrian vineyards, and pristine Hungarian villages before ending in the imperial gem that is Budapest.

Details:  $5,500. Fully supported/guided. Includes use of a 27- to 30-gear titanium bike or an aluminum tandem with e-bike option, all breakfasts, and half of your dinners.

Sacred Sites of Greece

best biking tours in europe

Peloponnese: Cycle Greece

Cycle Greece ’s eight-day tour (one of Bicycling magazine’s “best tours” in 2009) travels through arguably the most beautiful part of mainland Greece and offers both long (358 miles) and short (237 miles) options. Stretches in the saddle are broken up by stops at some of the Greek’s most famous sites, including the Olympic grounds where the first games commenced in 796 B.C. Also included are tours of Epidavros, the most famous healing center in the classical world, and the ancient city of Mycenae.

Details: $2,340, based on double occupancy. Fully supported/guided. Includes use of a Specialized 27-gear road bike, entrance fees and private tours of several sites, and all dinners (with house wine).

Dalmation Coast

best biking tours in europe

Croatia:  Backroads

“The Mediterranean as It Once Was” has been Croatia’s tagline for years. The country touts its beautiful beaches, lavender and olive groves, and mashup of Roman, Byzantine, French, Ottoman, and Slavic architecture. Backroads ’ six-day tour island hops from Brac to Hvar (the Cannes of Croatia) to Korcula. The leisurely length (106- or 192-mile options) means there’s plenty of time at the end of the day for a dip in the gorgeous blue-green sea. The final day is spent in historic Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic.”

Details: $3,998 to $4,598, depending on dates; based on double occupancy. Fully supported/guided. Includes all meals except two lunches and one dinner.

6 long-distance bike itineraries in Europe that promise epic adventure

best biking tours in europe

Some people like to relax on their summer vacations. Some like to stay active. And yet others seek out invigorating, adrenaline-pumping, even grueling holidays that test their endurance and deliver the ultimate in thrills.

If you’re in the last group, read on.

Adapted from Lonely Planet’s The Bikepackers’ Guide to the World , the itineraries below will test your mettle as they take you up, down and across Europe . The payoff? Sublime views, superb training and the endless pleasure of taking the road less traveled. (In this case, way less traveled.)

So gear up – and get ready for some continental-scale adventures.

1. Trans Dinarica Trail

Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Hercegovina 758 miles (1220km); challenging

The multi-use Trans Dinarica Trail was designed by local enterprises to encourage visitors to explore the Western Balkans by bicycle, and currently covers Slovenia , Croatia and Bosnia & Hercegovina . It’s a sister trail to the Via Dinarica hiking route , which extends into Albania , Kosovo and North Macedonia . The Trans Dinarica starts in Slovenia’s Soča Valley , famous for its water sports, then rolls through the foothills of the Julian Alps beside the Italian border before dipping into Croatia for a foray into the forests of Risnjak National Park . Next, it shadows the Adriatic before a transfer takes riders across the border and into Bosnia & Hercegovina, where it visits Mostar and Sarajevo .

Two men cycle on a bike path by water and wind turbines, Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland, the Netherlands

2. Ronde van Nederland

The Netherlands 860 miles (1384km); easy

Holland’s long-distance cycling routes, known as LF routes , are an easy way of exploring this cycle-friendly nation. Most use traffic-free bike paths that are wide and well made. Some of the classic trips include the LF Kustroute along the North Sea and Wadden Sea coastlines; the popular LF Zuiderzeeroute around an inland sea and through national parks and historic towns; and the LF Vechtdalroute linking quiet Dutch villages. But put some of the LF routes together and you get this fantastic 860-mile (1384km) circuit of the Netherlands . Dunes, dykes, canals, sculptures, megaliths, polders, towns and villages feature. Completing the Ronde van Nederland earns riders a special certificate.

3. Iron Curtain Trail

Germany Distance varies; moderate

EuroVelo’s EV13 route , the Iron Curtain Trail follows that great geopolitical fissure from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea, through Norway , the Baltic nations , Poland , Germany , the Czech Republic , the Balkans, Romania , Bulgaria and beyond to Turkey . It’s not yet complete but will cover more than 6214 miles (10,000km) when finished. However, the German section is mostly signposted and ready to ride. The history of the Iron Curtain means that there are some fascinating sites to visit along these quiet roads and bike paths. But if you want to get further off the beaten track, consider the Iron Curtain Gravel Trail , a 426-mile-long (685km) trail crafted by Markus Stitz that runs from the Harz mountains to the Czech border (maps available via komoot.com ).

A group of mountain bikers descend down a narrow trail near Mont Blanc, Alps, Europe

4. Tour du Mont Blanc

France, Switzerland & Italy 105 miles (169km); challenging

File this trip under “do now, while you can.” Climate change is causing the glaciers of the High Alps to melt, which means that the stability of these mountains is changing and, increasingly, that trails such as this loop around western Europe’s highest peak are diverted or closed due to rockfalls and other dangers. But while it’s possible, the Tour du Mont Blanc is a fantastic challenge for mountain bikers, who need only carry enough kit for three or four nights spent in refuges. Most start at Chamonix and will enter three separate countries on their ride. They’ll also cross rivers, climb several passes above 6500ft (1981m) and eat their own weight in pastries.

5. Torino-Nice Rally

Italy & France 435 miles (700km); challenging

Beginning life as an annual bikepacking rally – a noncompetitive group ride – designed by James Olsen, this gorgeous route explores some of the lesser-known Alpine regions between Turin in Italy and Nice in France , and can be ridden at any time between late June and early September when the higher parts are free from snow. Riders take a mixture of rough gravel tracks and trails, with some road diversions available if needed. Bikes are usually hardtail mountain bikes, but gravel bikes with chunky tires will also be fine. And accommodation can be in some of the mountain refugios on the route or under canvas, depending on preference. There’s a lot of ascent, obviously, so most need eight or more days if stopping to savor the views and the local food.

6. Great North Trail

UK 825 miles (1328km); challenging

Snaking north from England ’s Peak District National Park to the tip of Scotland , the Great North Trail touches on some of the UK ’s greatest cities and its wildest open spaces. This is a mountain-bike route for experienced cyclists if attempted as a single trip, but it’s easy to break it up into sections. The first leg borrows the Pennine Bridleway , which hugs the ridge of hills between Manchester and Leeds before entering the patchwork of stone walls and green fields in Yorkshire Dales National Park . The route then crosses the open moors of Northumberland National Park , and heads into the Scottish Borders at the mountain-biking hub of Peebles before visiting Edinburgh and Glasgow and taking on the real mountains of Scotland on its way to John O’Groats.

the Canal du Midi towpath near Narbonne.

10 of the best easy cycling holidays in Europe

While Geraint Thomas wannabes might tackle the Alps or Pyrenees, here are 10 less-challenging but equally scenic routes for families and newbies

Toulouse to Sète, Canal du Midi, France

It is possible to cycle all the way across south-west France, from Bordeaux on the Atlantic to Sète on the Mediterranean, following just one river and two canals. Beginners might prefer to pace themselves by cycling the second half, from Toulouse to Sète along the towpaths of the Canal du Midi . At 150 miles (240km), it is a decent distance, but is flat and can be broken up into manageable stages. The going can be a bit rough and bumpy, so consider investing in a gel saddle cover. Places to spend a night or two include the fortified city of Carcassonne, a short detour from the canal, and historic Béziers. DIY info freewheelingfrance.com Organised tour Belle France has seven-night self-guided trip from Toulouse to Agde from £1,620, including six days’ cycling, bike hire and support, luggage transfers and half-board accommodation. There is an optional one-day add-on to Sète.

Mother and daughter cycling along Danube river in Wachau Valley, Austria

The iconic river spans 10 countries and 2,850km, and has well-developed riverside cycle paths through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. There is no traffic to contend with – other than the 38,000 cyclists who ride the Austrian section alone every year – and tackling it in a downstream (south-westerly) direction means the route is slightly downhill pretty much all the way. Good starting points include Regensburg or Passau in Germany, finishing in Vienna or Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. Alternatively, start in Vienna and cycle the 370km to Budapest, where there are thermal baths to ease aching muscles. DIY info danube-cycle-path.com Organised tour Intrepid Travel has a seven-night guided trip from Budapest to Vienna from £931, including B&B in hotels, bike hire, luggage transfers and entry to the Carnuntum Roman ruins in Austria, and the Esztergom Basilica and Szechenyi Baths, Hungary.

Pisa to Florence, Tuscany

The Serchio River near Lucca

Hilly Tuscany may not be an obvious choice for an easy cycling holiday, but keeping the distances short and adding rest days makes it doable – and the scenery is well worth the effort. Start with a day or two in Pisa, then cycle along the Serchio River to the walled city of Lucca (45km). The next day, cover another 45km to Montecatini Terme, Italy’s biggest spa town, stopping at Collodi and Pescia along the way. Either spend a day in the spa or cycle a circular route around the Medici villas, through vineyards and olive groves, stopping at Vinci to visit the Museo Leonardiano (60km). The final ride to Florence is the longest, at 64km, but it can be shortened to 50km by taking the train to Pistoia and cycling the rest of the way. DIY info italy-cycling-guide.info Organised tour The Carter Company has a seven-night self-guided trip, starting and ending in Pisa, from £890 B&B, including bike hire and luggage transfers.

North Zealand, Denmark

Kronborg Castle, immortalised as Elsinore in Hamlet.

Denmark is very bike-friendly, with 12,000km of cycle routes, safe cycling lanes in cities and largely flat terrain. Cyclists can spend a week following a circular route around North Zealand, known as the Danish Riviera, starting and finishing in Copenhagen – a popular route with families. Cycling anti-clockwise, the path hugs the shores of the Baltic Sea, sometimes turning inland through forests, nature reserves and around lakes, then skirts the fjords – Ise Fjord, Lammefjord, Holbæk Fjord, Roskilde Fjord – before reaching Roskilde. Daily distances average about 45km, and there are lots of beaches and coastal villages to stop at. Attractions en route include Kronborg Castle (Elsinore in Hamlet), and Roskilde’s cathedral and Viking Ship Museum . DIY info visitnorthsealand.com Organised tour UTracks has a seven-night self-guided trip from £1,150 (£830 children), including B&B, bike hire and luggage transfers.

Black Forest, Germany

Lake Titisee, Black Forest,

The Southern Black Forest Cycle Route is a 248km circular journey beginning and ending in Freiburg. The asphalt path follows a former railway line and is suitable for families, including those with young children in trailers. The route is mainly flat, with a few minor hills in the forest (a short train journey from Kirchzwarten to Titisee Lake on the first day cuts out the only steep section). The scenery is a mixture of forest and farmland, with a couple of days spent riding alongside the Rhine and the last day through vineyards. Cyclists can spend the nights in small medieval towns, and take a short train ride across the Swiss border for a night in Basel. DIY info germany.travel Organised tour Flexitreks has a six-night self-guided trip from £483 B&B, including luggage transfers and train to Basel; bike hire £69.

Istrian Coast, Italy, Slovenia & Croatia

Bikers sitting on steps above Piran and the Adriatic

Cyclists can visit the three countries that share the Istrian peninsula on a week-long ride. The terrain is slightly hilly but distances are short, averaging 40km a day. The route starts in the Italian port of Trieste, then heads south on a coastal cycle path to pretty Piran in Slovenia. From here, it winds through the Sečovlje salt pans, then crosses into Croatia. Continuing south, places to spend a night include Umag, a medieval walled town; Poreč, with its sixth-century Euphrasian Basilica; and Rovinj, probably the most picturesque town on the peninsula. The path hugs the coast all the way down to the final stop, Pula, known for its well-preserved Roman amphitheatre. Fažana, 8km north of Pula, is the embarkation point for ferries to the Brijuni Islands. DIY info istria-bike.com Organised tour Zenith Holidays has a seven-night self-guided trip from £827 B&B, including bike hire and luggage transfers.

Amsterdam to Bruges

cycling in the main square of Gouda.

The Netherlands is paradise for cyclists: almost completely flat, with courteous drivers and segregated cycle paths everywhere. Cycling from Amsterdam across the border to Bruges, in equally bicycle-friendly Belgium, is perfectly possible in a week, but the distances are a little challenging: the first day’s ride, from Amsterdam to Gouda, is 80km. Another possibility is an organised bike and barge trip, sailing some of the way and cycling the rest, and eating and sleeping on board. A typical itinerary would involve rides of about 40km a day, spending nights in Dordrecht, Antwerp, Dendermonde and Ghent. From Bruges, there is a 37km loop to the beaches of the North Sea coast. And if it all gets too much, there is the option to skip a day’s cycling and stay on the barge. DIY info hollandcyclingroutes.com and fietsroute.org Organised tour Saddle Skeddadle has a seven-night guided bike and barge trip from £925 full-board.

Way of the Roses, Lancashire to East Yorkshire

Sign for the ‘Way of the Roses’ cycle route, Greenhow, Yorkshire

Not ready for Land’s End to John O’Groats just yet? The Way of the Roses is a challenging but rather more manageable long-distance ride: 275km from Morecambe on the Lancashire coast to the seaside town of Bridlington, East Yorkshire. The route follows quiet country lanes, disused railway lines and cycle paths. There are some tough climbs in the Yorkshire Dales, and the highest point, Greenhow Hill, near Grassington, is 400 metres above sea level. But after this (roughly the halfway point) the hills get smaller, and beyond Ripon the route is largely flat. The varied terrain includes the Forest of Bowland, the Nidderdale AONB, the Vale of York and the Yorkshire Wolds; the first day’s riding goes through Lancaster and the fourth day ends in York. Based on a six-day ride, the average daily distance is 46km. DIY info cycle-england.co.uk Organised tour Open Road Open Skies has a five-night self-guided trip from £445 B&B, including luggage transfers; bike hire is an extra £50.

Riverside houses in Girona.

There is a corner of eastern Catalonia, south of the Pyrenees, where the hills slope down to a fertile valley that is flat and ideal for cycling. Starting inland in the Garrotxa region, cyclists can explore the meadows, woods and hamlets along the via verde (cycle path) and country roads. Near the town of Les Planes d’Hostoles, there are waterfalls to cool off in. The off-road continues right into historic Girona, where it is well worth spending a couple of days exploring sights including the Gothic cathedral, Jewish quarter and city walls. The final stretch leads to the Mediterranean, finishing at the upmarket resort of s’Agaró on the Costa Brava. DIY info viasverdes.com Organised tour Inntravel has a seven-night self-guided trip from £1,018 B&B, including four dinners, bike hire and luggage transfers.

Around Lake Constance

Boy jumping from a diving board into the Lake Constance, Bregenz, Austria

Lake Constance is bordered by Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and a 168-mile cycle path encircles the lake, allowing cyclists to visit all three countries on a week-long trip. The path is well-maintained and signposted, and is suitable for families and beginners. The route goes through forests, farms, vineyards and orchards, past cathedrals, castles and convents, and there are views of the Alps as well as the lake. Highlights include the Unesco-listed monastic island of Reichenau; the historic towns of Meersburg and Lindau; and the wildlife-rich Rhine delta. Cyclists can cool off with a dip in the lake or one of the summer lidos. It is best to ride clockwise, breaking the journey into four or more stages. DIY info bodenseetouren.eu Organised tour Headwater has a seven-night self-guided trip from £1,139, including B&B and five dinners, bike hire, luggage transfers and ferry from Staad to Meersburg.

8 of the Best Mountain Biking Destinations in Europe

Table of contents.

Nothing beats Europe when it comes to extended mountain biking tours set against legendary terrain.

If you’re keen to explore everything from glaciers and rocky drops to flowering grasslands and seaside cliffs, two wheels and a bit of suspension is the perfect way to enjoy the continent. But there’s a lot to choose from, so we recruited one of our favorite guides—Bostjan Brzin, former professional ski jumper turned MTB tour operator—to help us compile a list of the best mountain biking spots in Europe.

Whether you’re planning your next (or first) European mountain biking tour, be sure to check out the spots below. See you on the trails!

Mountain biking Switzerland

Who better to ask than someone who has seen it all?

Bostjan Brzin, owner of Bike Hike Tours NYC, has mountain biked all over North America. But for him, nothing beats Europe.

The industry vet has been biking for over 15 years and still makes it a point to get across the Atlantic annually for an extended tour. He says there are certain aspects of mountain biking he just can’t find in North America—even in classic locations like Whistler , Park City or Moab .

We sat down for a chat with Bostjan to find out what keeps drawing him back across the pond, from glacial trails to some of the best resorts in the world to up-and-coming spots like Madeira,

1. Les Deux Alpes

Les Deux Alpes is the full package. This huge, high altitude mountain biking area was primarily known as a popular winter destination for in-bound resort skiers. But that changed around 2007 when they opened for mountain biking in the off-season. A little more than a decade later, there are now about 70 miles of singletrack among 21 different trails, and today “Les 2” is known for hosting the finest mountain biking trails in France , and some of the best in the world.

Europe MTB

Ski and bike all in one day

The park features four rideable sectors and 7,500 feet of vertical drop—which translates into some rides lasting an hour and 45 minutes! While the park is geared towards pros and experienced riders with its impressive downhill, enduro, and cross country offerings, there are a fair amount of “Easy 2 Ride” sections within the lower reaches.

No matter which section you decide to ride, you’ll see the terrain switch from stunning glacier and alpine tracks that evoke the mountain biking in Colorado to verdant meadows and valleys in the blink of an eye. It’ll pass so quickly that you’ll miss out on all the amazing views around you if you’re bombing down too fast. At this point in the conversation, Bostjan’s face broadens into a grin. “But that’s not all!”, he tells us. If for some reason you need a break from mountain biking you can change sports. Trade your bike for a pair of skis and head up to the Girose and Mont-de-Lans glaciers for some pristine Alpine powder—a rare and awesome flex for any resort.

Experience epic singletrack that the pros flock to

Les Deux is brimming with visitors year-round as skiers and bikers pack its amazing tracks. According to Bostjan, his groups never seem to mind the crowds because the singletrack is just that great. In 2008, the legendary Crankworx MTB festival had its first Europe iteration here, bringing many of the best trail shapers from Canada and Whistler to help build new lines. “Perfection,” says Bostjan. “I think Whistler might be the best, but it’s so much smaller,” he offers. Lucky for you, Les Deux, with all it’s world class trails and grand scale, is one of the few resorts that has something for everyone.

Les Deux is super packed every year, but my clients don’t seem to care at all because the singletrack is just so, so good.

Guided mountain biking through Europe’s hidden gems

Moving on from the Les Deux, Bostjan takes us to neighboring Italy, where another popular ski destination has become a biking paradise: Livigno. Amid a moonscape of ice and mountains, the town is tucked into the Italian Alps close to the Swiss and Austrian borders. It still maintains a cozy alpine existence though, and also happens to be tax-free—always a welcome perk for a travel destination.

Starting in town you get to choose your own adventure: On either side of the Aqua Granda, the river bisecting Livigno, two bike parks diverge. Carosello 3000 to the southeast serves up nearly 20 miles of newly constructed flow and enduro trails while Mottolino Fun Mountain on the northeast courses through the mountains on diverse terrain.

Europe MTB

Choose your path

Of the two bike parks, Bostjan slightly prefers Mottolino with its 14 trails ranging from mild and flowy to steep and super fast fit for World Cup downhill riders. There is also a jump area with twisty wooden structures for adrenaline-hungry riders.

Carosello 3000’s bike park is newer to the area, but is quickly becoming a favorite for local and visiting mountain bikers alike, especially since it renovated all of its tracks in 2018. Here you’ll find family friendly and entry-level trails accessible by cable cars. From the highest point you’ll descend over 11,000 feet through alpine meadows and rock-strewn singletrack to rival the best mountain bike trails in Sedona . Electric bikes are also welcome here, so if you’re traveling with a group that’s not too MTB-savvy, everyone will have a chance to enjoy some downhill without much trouble.

Riding in both parks is a blast, says Bostjan, but his beaming smile shares more than words ever could.

I simply love Livigno. The sheer variety and quality of options in its two parks is something every mountain rider dreams of.

3. Finale Ligure

We’re staying within Italy as Bostjan introduces us to another stellar destination for enduro lovers. Finale Ligure is a small comune near Monaco and San Remo, and is one of the few mountain biking spots in the world where all trails lead to the sea. The Ligurian Sea. With a warm climate and consistently sweet riding conditions year round, Finale Ligure is perfect for a winter getaway, says Bostjan. Post-ride, plop into the Mediterranean where temperatures can go up to 70°F during the “cold” months.

Europe MTB

From shuttle service to the sea

The scenic terrain overlooking the ocean is wildly evocative of mountain biking in Croatia . There are 90 distinct trails that unfurl nearly 250 miles of coastal riding, most of which stems from the top of Apennine, a 3,280 foot mountain nearby. Access to the trails is easy from town as there are ample shuttle services, but no chairlifts mean you’re going human-powered once you’re there—all the way back to the sea.

Enduro lovers will enjoy themselves, and the fact that the Enduro World Series ends their season here most years attests to that. If you’re looking for something a little different, many of the flowiest trails actually begin at an abandoned NATO base complete with graffiti on concrete. Bostjan particularly recommends the ridge trail, Roller Coaster, a 4 mile descent to the Italian Riviera. Enjoy post-ride drinks at Oddone Bici, a bike shop and bar, and swap tales as you swill your aperitivo.

Finale Ligure is a delicious cocktail of Mediterranean scenery, perfect climate conditions and first-rate MTB trails.

The Ultimate Bike Shop

An island of eternal spring, the mountain biking season runs all year on Madeira . The island in the Atlantic Ocean is actually closer to Africa than Portugal (it’s only an hour and a half flight from Lisbon, though) and is quickly becoming one of the top adventure holiday destinations in the world. Regardless of your skill level, you simply won’t be able to resist exploring the island on your mountain bike—it’s really the best way to see what’s on offer, insists Bostjan. The island’s mountainous terrain contains several microclimates, so you’ll find yourself coasting through arid, sun-baked ridgelines then alongside lush, verdant groves in a single ride.

Europe MTB

Strong community and epic terrain come together

Many pros report that, while traditional hot spots like Whistler or the Alps may grow old after a while, Madeira’s terrain is constantly changing. Maybe that’s because riders can get lost in the action of the long-winded XC trails that weave through Jurassic Park-like jungles, stunning coastal singletrack, rooty descents, and abutt against Madeira’s famous levadas. Or maybe it’s thanks to Freeride Madeira, a small team of local riders who are continually developing (and maintaining) the island’s rides. It’s probably that one. In any case, Madeira is the perfect place to visit during off-winter months to get your fill of cross-country, enduro, downhill, all-mountain or even just casual riding. Although Bostjan has only ridden here once a couple of years ago, he’s so enchanted by the island that including it in this list was a no-brainer.

I’ve done my fair share of traveling and seen the best trails this sport has to offer, but if I could go to any place in the world at this moment, it would be Madeira.

5. Saalbach-Hinterglemm

Bostjan considers Austria to be one of the best countries for mountain biking, so we’ll cover a few locales that are close by if you want to make a regional tour of it

First stop, Saalbach-Hinterglemm. This Alpine resort town has built up a dedicated community of mountain bikers during its off-peak summer months and has the infrastructure to show for it. Case in point, there is an extensive lift system with modern gondolas and the thoughtfully designed trails have options for kid-friendly to pro-worthy, and for cross-country, gravity and e-bike riders too.

There’s a lot to enjoy in the land of the strudel and schnitzel. Within the valley is about 250 miles of trails and four mountains that offer up some 3,200 ft. of descent. The Blue Line is a beginner favorite, though even advanced riders enjoy its streamlined, brake-free simplicity. Other classics that draw riders back year after year are the legendary Hacklberg Trail, the X-Line—with its gnarly over-the-road jump—and the Bergstadl Trail .

No matter your preferred style of riding, with so many options to choose from there’s bound to be something here for everyone.

Europe MTB

A place built for and by mountain bikers

It seems like everything within Saalbach-Hinterglemm is tailored to mountain bikers after the snow melts. There are dedicated MTB accommodations like the Bike’n Soul hotel , but even the more traditional hotels, like Sallbacherhof, are proud of their proximity to the town’s epic trails.

One other aspect of biking here that Bostjan really likes is that, at most places, staying locally will give you a Joker Card for the duration of your stay. The card is good for a few free uses of the lift system and other discounts around town, which he finds indispensable for making the best use of all the trails. Also, if you happen to visit Saalbach-Hinterglemm in early July, make sure to check out the GlemmRide Bike Festival, where you can enjoy the electric atmosphere and mingle with the pros.

Everything in Saalbach-Hinterglemm feels like it’s tailored to the needs of mountain bikers. It’s rare to see this level of track quality paired with such good infrastructure

Bostjan’s eyes light up as we come to our next spot. Just over the hill from Saalbach-Hinterglemm we find Bikepark Leogang, a serious pro rider’s arena. It hosts the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup yearly and is a regular stop for any diehard mountain biker. There are beginner rides in the valley, sure, but it’s primarily known as a training ground where advanced riders can hone their skills. Local test pieces include the Speedster, a World Cup course that is one of the most technically demanding around, and Hang Man I, a mile and a half line that runs through roots, rocks, north shores and tight turns. Even though Bostjan is more than a competent rider himself, he just can’t get enough of watching pros bomb downhill at dizzying speeds whenever he visits.

Europe MTB

An all-in-one mountain biking location

You can find everything you need on the grounds, such as bike repairs and shops, rentals and wash, and even some decent camping options, which is less common in the other resort-driven locales. Another cool feature of the park is that there are plenty of workshops, flow parks, areas to practice the basics, and programs for kids. So if you’re traveling with family or friends who aren’t at your level of stoke—and skill— there’s plenty on offer to get everyone excited.

Leogang is the place where the pros come to learn, so you can imagine the level of skill on display here. Just watching them go at it is enough to make my afternoon complete.

After taking care of the pros, now we turn our attention to the newcomers. Wagrain, about an hour’s drive from Salzburg and Leogang, is a perfect place to take your first spins in the sport.

This quiet ski town is more than just the birthplace of Mozart, it also has a fantastic MTB park (noticing a theme?). Here you’ll find just under 100 miles of flowing trails and cruiser downhill runs on gravel and mountain terrain. Wagrain has a well-deserved reputation for its lift-supported gravity park—accessed via the Flying Mozart gondola, of course—where everyone can find some action that is just right for them. Bostjan recommends the Hard Rock, a long natural trail that descends nearly 2,000 feet on mild roots and rocks. For family-friendly adventure, this is definitely one of your best mountain biking holidays in Europe.

Europe MTB

In Bostjan’s eyes, what stands out about mountain biking in Austria is the proximity of all the bike parks. If you plan your day just right, you can hit up several locations and still have time for a beer before the sun sets. Wagrain in particular is catered towards active vacationers and families, which makes it a great place to wind down and enjoy yourself after a day of bombing down trails.

With its relaxed and cozy vibe, Wagrain is just the right place for those kinds of activities that profit from a slower tempo.

To round off the list, Bostjan brings us boucler la boucle—full circle—by introducing another great French destination. Châtel is a picturesque Alpine village near the Swiss border that is home to one of Europe’s premier mountain bike parks. Part of the Portes du Soleil, a network of 12 interlinked resorts that includes Morzine and Les Gets, Châtel stands out as an advanced downhill mountain biker’s playground.

Europe MTB

One of Europe’s best bike parks

The Châtel Bike Park in Pre-La-Joux is considered by many to be among Europe’s finest options for mountain bike trips . There are two lifts within the park to bring mountain bikers to the area’s insane pro-and-difficult-rated tracks. The first, Pierre Longue, takes riders to an elevation of 5,300 ft. where standout black trails like Air Voltage, Komatrautrail and Gueps all await. The second lift, Rochassons, brings riders up another 2,000 ft. where the trails are rated as a bit easier, but equally as enticing. Bostjan cautions that green trails here are more demanding than green trails elsewhere.

While the bike park and Châtel proper are geared for strong, intermediate riders, there are some kid-friendly areas as well. Should you feel the need to venture further afield, the massive network of Portes du Soleil connects over 400 miles of trails spanning 12 resorts and 5 bike parks, so there are plenty of accessible options. This kind of variety is almost impossible to find anywhere else in the world.

Thanks to the huge Portes du Soleil trail network, there’s so much awesome stuff to see and do in Châtel that I wouldn’t know where to start.

Europe’s best cycling routes: These picturesque bike trails are perfect for exploring on two wheels

Looking to explore Europe on two wheels this summer?

There’s never been a better time to ditch your car for a more active - and sustainable - form of travel.

With more and more European countries investing in cycling infrastructure, the continent is crisscrossed with an endless web of scenic routes just begging to be explored.

To help you decide where to start, we’ve delved into the best cycling holidays in Europe. Using data from UK price comparison website Compare the Market, these are the most Instagrammed bike routes across the continent.

What is the most picturesque cycling route in Europe?

Taking the top spot is the Wild Atlantic Way on the Inishowen Peninsula in Ireland ’s County Donegal.

At over 2,500 kilometres in length, the route winds along Ireland’s stunning west coast.

Along the way, you’ll be treated to views of towering cliffs, sheltered bays and emerald islands. The route is broken into 14 stages, meaning you can complete it across the course of multiple trips.

Cyclists from across the world have snapped over 1.7 million posts under the hashtag #wildatlanticway, making this Europe’s most Instagrammed cycling route.

Where are the best cycling routes in France?

Home to the iconic Tour De France, it’s no surprise that France takes the lead as the country with the most picturesque cycling routes. Of the top 20 most Instagrammed routes, it is home to no less than five.

With 427,561 Instagram posts shared, the Camino Francés is Europe’s second most popular spot overall. This scenic route runs from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port across the border to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. On the same route, the Way of St James bags fifth place.

France also clinches the third spot on the list with Cinglés De Ventoux in Bédoin. Here, serious - or crazy - cyclists challenge themselves to complete the route three times in 24 hours, amounting to over 4,400 metres of ascent in 136 kilometres.

The winding Routes des Grandes Alpes, from Lake Geneva to the French Riviera, and La Marmotte - an annual summer cycling challenge in Bourg d'Oisans - also made the list.

  • Scenic trails and cheap travel: This eastern European mountain town is a budget hiker’s paradise
  • Why cyclists should set their sights on Türkiye's trails for their next trip

Where are the best cycling routes in the UK?

The UK also has its fair share of picturesque cycling routes, with two Welsh routes, one Scottish route and three English routes making the top 20.

The Taff Trail in Cardiff Bay, Wales, comes in eighth place for its serene blend of riverside paths and forest roads. The route runs 88 km from the city of Cardiff to the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Wales is also recognised for the Mawddach Trail in Dolgellau, an accessible 14 km route along a disused railway line in Snowdonia National Park .

Scotland’s Bealach na Ba Circuit from Tornapress comes in 11th place. This rollercoaster ride along the country’s west coast boasts breathtaking views and the longest steep hill in the UK.

England’s 180 km Fred Whitton Challenge is popular for its scenic trail through the Lake District. Cycling pros complete this route in under six hours, but if you’re new to cycling, don’t be disheartened if it takes you over 11 hours.

Also in England, the Cyclone in Newcastle - more an annual event than an official route - draws cyclists to complete routes of varying difficulty, ranging from 55 to 174 km.

King Alfred’s Way - 350 km circular off-road adventure route starting in Winchester - also makes the list.

Where are the best cycling routes in Italy?

Traversing forests and thousand-year-old towns, Italy ’s Tuscany Trail comes in 10th place.

Starting in Monterosso al Mare, the 450 km route hosts the world’s largest annual bikepacking event, which draws around 3,000 participants from over 40 countries.

Trailing close behind in 12th place, the Parenzana in the coastal town of Muggia, Trieste, follows the 129 km route of an old narrow-gauge railway into Porec, Croatia , passing beaches and salt pans along the way.

  • Electric biking is the best way to explore the Swiss Alps in spring

Where are the best cycling routes in Germany?

Germany just edges into Europe’s most picturesque cycling spots. The Iron Curtain Gravel Trail comes in 19th place, spanning 687 km across the middle of the country.

Starting from the Drei-Länder-Stein in the Harz Mountains, it stretches all the way to Dreiländereck on the Czech border. Cutting through mountains and national parks, this trail is dotted with plaques that tell the story of Germany’s divided past.

The Danube Cycle Path, also known as the Donauradweg, takes 20th place. Starting in Donaueschingen in the Black Forest, the riverside route runs all the way through Austria, Slovakia and Hungary to Romania ’s Black Sea coast.

Where else is great for cycling holidays in Europe?

Europe has no shortage of picturesque cycling routes, and various other countries make it into the top 20.

La Vuelta - an annual cycling race that takes place in Spain - comes in fourth place. It challenges riders to cover flats, hills and mountains in 21 stages, each taking place in a different part of the country.

In sixth place, the Kungsleden in Sweden is a whirlwind of snowy mountain peaks and wild moorland. Running from Abisko to Hemavan, the 430 km route is also the country’s longest hiking trail.

Winding 273 km, Belgium’s annual Tour of Flanders road cycling race comes in seventh place, while Norway’s North Sea Cycle Route from Bergen to Kristiansand comes 18th.
