The Sonora-Baja California railway

It is a project that has been in the works for over a century. The idea to construct an interregional railway that would connect the Baja California peninsula with the rest of Mexico began during the 1910s and 1920s but due to the difficulties caused by the armed struggle, the attempts made no progress. In 1919, the government of President Venustiano Carranza made unsuccessful attempts to build a road between Mexicali and San Felipe.

In 1923, the governor of the Northern District of Baja California, José Inocente Lugo, began the work on the projected line, the “National Railway of Baja California”, as part of an effort to colonize land in the Volcán Lake region. However, the project was halted due to a lack of funding.

In 1924, the federal government granted a new concession to the CRLC in association with the SP, to build a railway, designated the Ferrocarril Mexicali y Golfo, from a site near Mexicali to a point on the Hardy River, near La Bomba, with an option to extend the line to San Felipe. The first section of the route was completed in 1926 and freight service was inaugurated.

In 1927, a new contract was signed with the federal government, which established the commitment to build 21 km annually until the line was finished by February 1932. However, progress was slow due to frequent flooding of the river. In October 1929, the Mexicana & Gulf company was reorganized to establish a new company, the Inter-California del Sur Railroad, which in February 1930 came under the control of the SP.

Progress stalled with the onset of the Great Depression and the collapse of cotton prices. In 1934, the Mexican government canceled the concession to build the second section of the line, up to Puerto Otis. The SP continued operations along the section already built, until 1941, when the Mexican government acquired the line.

During the six-year term of President Lázaro Cárdenas (1934-1940), as part of the series of projects known as the Pro-Federal Territory Plan, the decision was made to extend the line built until then, in order to connect it with the national rail network in Santa Ana, Sonora.

Despite the challenges and setbacks, the Sonora-Baja California railway project remains an important effort to connect the Baja California peninsula with the rest of Mexico.

Calafia bullring

The Calafia bullring has been a staple in Mexicali for over 40 years, hosting countless legends, emotions, and memories that have cemented its place as a historical site in the city. The idea for the bullring was born in the 1970s as part of a new urban development plan for Mexicali, with the goal of creating a Civic and commercial Center. The then-state governor, Milton Castellanos Everardo, decided to give new life to a series of abandoned corrals that were in ruins and thus, the Plaza de Toros Calafia was born.

Construction of the bullring began in early 1975 on an area of 20,000 square meters, with an approximate budget of 23 million pesos. The bullring was designed to hold around 8,600 people and was built using 750 tons of rebar and 6,500 cubic meters of concrete, with over a thousand workers employed in double shifts.

The opening day for the bullring was on November 16, 1975, where a great show was scheduled with famous matadors such as Manolo Martínez, Eloy Cavazos, and Mariano Ramos. Over the years, the Calafia bullring has hosted many bullfights, both national and international, and has also been used for other types of events.

The square has been used for basketball games, volleyball tournaments, and tennis matches, and has also been the site of many important boxing matches. The bullring has also been the center of many large concerts, with famous artists such as Vicente Fernández, Marco Antonio Solís, and Lola Beltrán performing there.

The Mexicali Chinese community was established when they started working in the irrigation projects of the Mexicali Valley and the cotton plantations.

Mexicali (also known informally as "Chicali") is the capital of the state of Baja California in Mexico , directly across the border from Calexico , California , United States . Its proximity to the United States has made it a very popular tourist destination, especially for day-trippers. Growing violence has curtailed that traffic, although Mexicali remains safer than other large border cities like Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez .

Understand [ edit ]

The municipality of Mexicali has a population of around 1.1 million people (2020), of whom about 800,000 people live in the city proper. Mexicali has grown from a small border town to a modern city with a sizable middle class and an even bigger upper class. The standard of living is among the highest in Mexico. It is recognized in Mexico for its sizable investment in education and low unemployment. It is a progressive city with main industry that has gone from agricultural to industrial.

Economically, a growing middle class with disposable income has fueled Mexicali's transformation into a modern city with a vibrant culture, a characteristic that has attracted many national and international businesses which had largely ignored the city before and had turned to Tijuana. Mexicali is considered among the most prosperous cities in Mexico. Some areas of the city reflect the significant number of wealthy people who inhabit the city, in areas such as San Pedro, Villafontana, and Col Nueva. There remains poverty in rural villages surrounding the modern, upper-middle class enclave of Mexicali proper. The North American Free Trade Agreement of 1994 that eliminated most trade restrictions between the two nations offers Mexicali an economic boom in the next decade.

Mexicali is a transit point for illegal immigration into the United States, as well as a common destination for any illegal Mexican immigrants deported from the West Coast of the U.S. Some areas are swollen with poor people with no roots in the city, who inhabit shantytowns, mainly in the outskirts of the city.

Mexicali's growing reputation as a cosmopolitan city is justified. Not only is the city home to many people who have migrated from within the same country, as well as some native Mexican Indians, but it boasts many Asian residents (especially Chinese), as well as Americans, Europeans, and South Americans. Chinese community [ edit ]

Mexicali has one of the largest Chinese communities in Mexico. It even hosted the North American headquarters of the Kuomintang (KMT) at one point. Many old-time Chinese-Mexican natives of Mexicali have since intermarried with the local mestizos or emigrated to the United States. Although Mexicali has had a history of Chinese immigration for about 100 years, the restaurant workers tend to be recent immigrants from Guangdong , China , who are multilingual in Taishanese (a distinct dialect of the Cantonese language), Mandarin, and Spanish. Nearly all of them are from just two cities in Guangdong, namely Taishan and Kaiping , with a small minority from neighboring Enping , Zhongshan , and Hong Kong .

The historic Chinese neighborhood is known as La Chinesca , centered on Avenida Benito Juárez, several hundred feet to the south of the Calexico point of entry.

People in the city of Mexicali speak Spanish. However, English is spoken at least marginally by the majority of the population. It is very easy to find someone who speaks English, and due to the city's international standing, other languages are used for business and are heard throughout the city, such as Chinese, Japanese, German and French.

While winters are pleasantly mild, visitors can expect a very hot climate during the summer months with average high temperatures ranging from 101°F to 108°F (38° to 42°C). Rainfall and clouds are scarce throughout the year.

By car [ edit ]

Mexicali is accessible from the United States through Calexico on Highway 111 (from El Centro and points north) and Highway 98 East ( Yuma ) and West ( San Diego ) via I-8.

Either park at the border and continue on foot or you drive into Mexico. Driving from the US to Mexico usually requires no stopping. Driving across the border from Mexico to the US may involve a long wait, especially during evening rush hour or on holiday weekends. Mexican insurance is required, which should be bought before your trip. Mexicali has two border crossings, Mexicali East (Newer) and Mexicali West (Traditional), both of which have a SENTRI lane.

Mexicali is the northern terminus for Mexican Highway 5 to San Felipe .

Mexicali can also be reached from Tijuana and Tecate on Mex-2. Though much of this highway is a toll road (the "Libramiento" aka Autopista), it is more scenic but will take longer than I-8 and is considered more hazardous, especially the "Rumorosa Grade". The toll either to or from Tijuana is around $14.

By foot [ edit ]

Many people drive to the border, park on the US side, and walk across. There are many lots available for this, which charge US$4-9 a day. While there are many taxis waiting to take you across, it's only about a five minute walk; follow the signs across.

In addition, Mexicali has access to the Imperial County Airport IPL  IATA , 15 mi (24 km) north across the border from Mexicali with flights from Los Angeles and Phoenix on Southern Airways .

Taxis are abundant in the city. You may either call for a site taxi (taxi de sitio) which are called beforehand and they can take you where you ask, or route taxis (taxi de ruta), which, like buses, have specific routes which they take.

There are also multiple public buses, which can range from old school refurbished school buses with no air circulation to brand new metrobuses with air conditioning and television screens, which are more expensive.

• The Asociación China de Mexicali (中華會館), located on Avenida Benito Juárez near the intersection with Altamirano, is one of Mexicali's primary and oldest Chinese associations. Upstairs, there are portraits of dozens of Chinese immigrants who have lived in Mexicali. There are also murals celebrating Mexicali's Chinese heritage, dragon costumes for use during festivals, and numerous classrooms. A few of the species you will find while fishing are Lobina, Bagre, Carpa, and Tilapia. Visitors returning to the United States who are 21 or older are allowed to bring back a limited quantity of alcohol, around 1 liter per adult (check regulations). Stay safe [ edit ]

While Mexicali has saved itself from the severity and degree of violence along the US-Mexico border and the insecurity is not as big as that of Tijuana , there is still potential for it to become dangerous, along with the violence that a regular metro city has such as petty theft, violence, and gang-related incidents. The emergency number is 066. Avoid giving out money to beggars and homeless people standing in the street or along sidewalks and avoid buying things off the street to avoid trouble later.

To avoid becoming part of the ongoing violence, do not buy illegal drugs. Overstocking yourself with prescription drugs will also warrant getting checked. While partying and clubbing in Mexico is all in good fun and alright, keep in mind that you will not get away with it because it is Mexico. You probably will get caught and kept a special eye on because you are an American, even if you look Latino.

If you do anything unlawful, even if you are underage, you will spend time in prison. You do not get preferential treatment because you are an American citizen. Also, keep in mind that Mexico uses kilometers and not miles, and speed limits in KPH are much slower than MPH in the United States.

Do not try to bribe the Mexican police officers, even if they are hinting at it. If you try to bribe, you will go to prison. Driving while using a cellphone or a radio without a hands free device is illegal in the state of Baja California and it will get you ticketed.

Trying to bargain prices will sometimes help, but in most places in Mexicali today it is not practiced and such behavior will be ignored.

Do not be caught with any type of weapon in Mexico. This can include a small pocket knife, or even ammunition or bullet casings. American motorists have been jailed for driving into Mexico with spent ammunition casings in their car trunk.

In the unlikely event of a major earthquake, duck and cover and stay where you are during the shaking, then go outside once the shaking stops. Buildings and other structures are unlikely to collapse. Your largest threats come from breaking windows and falling objects such as ceiling tiles and bookshelves. Try to get under a table, desk, or doorjamb to reduce your exposure to these threats. You are more likely to be injured if you try to run during the shaking.

Stay healthy [ edit ]

While the city's restaurants are registered by the Health Department and clean water is available city-wide, eating at roadside taco shops and drinking tap water is discouraged because one that is not used to this will probably get food poisoning. Avoid any foods you are not used to. Bottled water, carbonated and still, is available widely and you are encouraged to drink of it.

If you need emergency medical treatment, it is preferred that you attend a private hospital and call 066, attending a public hospital or a Seguro Social hospital will be futile, as they are only for registered Mexican citizens and have problems getting medical attention there. There are drugstores and private medical and dental clinics throughout the city.

A prescription from a licensed doctor in Mexico is needed to fill prescription drugs in any pharmacy in Baja California. These can be acquired at some pharmacies through their on-location doctor.

The country code for Mexico is +52, and the area code for the Mexicali Metropolitan area is 686. Phone numbers have 7 digits (XXX-XX-XX) and cellular phone numbers are dialed using access code 044, the area code, and the number (044-686-XXX-XXXX). Your mobile carrier will work if they have an agreement with either Telcel, Illusacel, Telefonica (Movistar), or Nextel. They may also work in the areas close to the international border with American carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile.

Most hotels (and all of the high-end ones) have high-speed internet access and are wi-fi enabled. This is the same for shopping malls and coffee shops. You may also find hot-spots at college and university campuses throughout the city.

• Guadalupe Canyon Hot Springs offers a running stream and a variety of primitive (hose-fed from local springs) hot baths and camping; the area is popular with Mexicali locals; it is 48 km (30 miles) down a rough dirt road, 32 km (20 miles) west of town on the road to Tijuana . Home » Mexicali

Mexicali is the capital of  Baja California .  On the U.S.-Mexican border, it is across from the city of Calexico, California.  This city, established in 1903, offers attractions and plenty of things to do.  From its traditional cuisine to its cultural venues, Mexicali attracts thousands of visitors annually.

Mexicali: Important Facts

Mexicali has a population of 689,775 people as of 2018.  So, behind  Tijuana  it is the second-largest city in Baja North.  The city has a reputation for its educated people.  As a result, it also maintains the highest standards of living in the country.  Mexicali has attracted many international companies like Coca-Cola and Nestle.

The Valley of Mexicali is very fertile.  So, agriculture continues as a strong industry for the city.  The valley also has a generous water supply.  Because of this, one of the largest irrigation hubs in the whole country. Because of its hot and dry climate, during the summer temperatures may be hotter than anywhere else in Mexico.  Its surrounding landscape is famed for off-roading, hiking, mountain climbing, and  camping .

Mexicali shares its history with the rest of the Baja Peninsula and this corner of northwestern Mexico.  Hunter and gatherer peoples made their way to the region thousands of years ago.  Over time, some indigenous groups began to practice small-scale agriculture.  Because of its remote location, the area remained isolated even after the arrival of the Spanish in the mid-1500s.  The Jesuits found success by the end of the eighteenth century. The Spanish largely ignored this rugged corridor of these northern lands until the early nineteenth century.  At this point, settlers began to discover the fertile agricultural areas of the Valley.  Farmers started to arrive in droves, and the city of Mexicali was incorporated in 1903.

Tourism in Mexicali

Technical product manufacturing in Mexicali has given it the nickname: ” silicon border.”  As a result, many business travelers visit annually.  Aside from business, visitors come to shop for crafts, silver, and even pharmaceuticals which are far less expensive than in the U.S.  The city has some excellent restaurants and hotels.

Things to See and Do

• Chinatown : Chinatown (La Chinesca) is one of the strongest centers of Chinese culture in Mexico .  The Chinese here come from Hong Kong and Guangdong.  A wide range of Chinese shops and cuisine are available in this part of Mexicali.
• Sierra Juarez : The mountains of the region are a popular draw for outdoor people.  Visitors climb, rappel, camp, hike and even go cave-exploring.
• Catedral de Guadalupe : As the oldest cathedral in the area, this attraction is a must-see site.  Find it on the Bulevar Morelos.
• Calzada Lopez Mateos : The city’s main avenue.  This street attracts many shoppers and diners to downtown.
• Plaza de Toros Calafia : This bullring is one of the most popular in northern Mexico.  It draws an international audience to witness its events.
• Off-Roading : Like elsewhere in Baja California, off-roading is a favorite pastime.  Visitors can ride off-road just about anywhere!
• Teatro del Estado : As one of the city’s main cultural spots.  This theater features dramatic and musical performances throughout the year.
• Museo Regional de la Universidad Autonoma : Collections and landscape exhibits.  Also, find renowned artifacts from the various historical eras of northern Mexico.
• Eating in Mexicali : The capital city is famous for its fine restaurants.

While many of Mexico's border towns have a dubious reputation, Mexicali retains a Mexican essence that is subtler than busy crossings like Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez. Most Mexicali visitors are en route to San Felipe on the Baja Peninsula or day-trippers down from California. Those with time to spare can enjoy this city's sights in an easy afternoon.

Check out La Chinesca, Mexico's biggest Chinatown for some diet variation, or wander around historic buildings for a glimpse of Mexicali's past. Chose between the graceful matador and wily bull at a bull fight if a round of golf sounds too sedate.

Wash off the dust of with a trip to Guadeloupe Canyon, 50 miles southwest of Mexicali. Here, earthy desert tones are broken by the outline of big horn sheep and come with a healthy dose of solitude. There are two dirt roads that lead to the canyon, and while both can get a bit rough after a heavy rain, the reward is a long soak in a natural hot spring and picturesque waterfalls and palm trees. Pitch a tent for the night to make the most of this isolated oasis.

Mexicali is 118 miles east of Tijuana and 45 miles from Yuma, Arizona.

Teeming with wildlife, the Rio Hardy is a stopover for migrating birds along the Pacific Flyway.  

This is a place of quiet solitude yet brimming with outdoor activities.  Bird watching, touring kayaks & SUP's, desert hiking & ATV trails, or just kickback on your riverfront patio with a cold drink and a good book.  It's YOUR choice.  At night, the desert sky lights up with a million stars.  Relax and reflect as the full moon rises across the river or plan your trip to coincide with one of the annual meteor showers throughout the year.

Riverfront Camping

I first came to this "Campo" on the Rio Hardy in 1977.  From the beginning I was captivated by the beauty and serenity.  There was, and still is, a feeling of being a million miles away from "civilization".  Utilizing my background in designing and building, I constructed a comfortable home, swimming pool, "ramada" and large garage at the river's edge.  After 36 years as a member, I was given the opportunity to purchase the concession for the entire campo.  I renamed it "RANCHO MIL" (Mil is Spanish for Thousand) and have lovingly restored it!

Mexico's Tourism Industry Reveals Strong Start To 2024

M exico's tourism industry this year has started with positive numbers, mainly in destinations such as Cancun , Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and Mexico City, places that have recorded high numbers of visitors from the United States and Canada, mainly.

Meanwhile, Acapulco is gradually recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Otis , which hit that area of the Pacific several months ago.

Mexico started 2024 receiving more international tourists, capturing higher income from foreign visitors, and obtaining an average expenditure of these tourists (who arrive in the country by air), higher than in the same period of 2023.

With data from the International Traveler Surveys of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), the consultancy specialized in tourism, Gemes, announced that, in January, 3.6 million tourists arrived in Mexico, 124 thousand more than in 2023, which represented a growth of 3.6 percent.

On the other hand, each international visitor spent, on average, 808 dollars, which is the second-highest figure recorded. While the average spending of tourists arriving by air recorded an all-time high of $1,262. The total revenue collection for international visitors was 3,143 million dollars, representing the highest revenue in a month of January.

The consultancy firm Gemes reports that, in February 2024, the four airports that recorded the largest influx of foreign tourists were Cancun, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos. These are the percentage increases reported compared to 2023:

• Cancun — 10.7 percent
• Mexico City — 2.4 percent
• Puerto Vallarta — 14 percent
• Los Cabos — 5.7 percent

Cancun Airport, which receives visitors mainly from the United States and Canada, recorded the arrival of more than 1 million travelers, which accounted for more than 46 percent of international arrivals in Mexico.

Acapulco Is Back After Hurricane Otis

Months after the devastating Hurricane Otis, the port of Acapulco has begun to recover and has already hosted international events such as the Tianguis Turístico 2024, in which 43 countries participated, as well as sports competitions such as the Mexican Tennis and the GNP Acapulco P1 Premium Padel.

As part of the work of the Tianguis Turístico 2024, the most important trade fair of the industry in Latin America, Miguel Torruco, Minister of Tourism of Mexico, said that about 36,000 business appointments were held in which 1,115 buyers and 833 companies participated.

He said that, after the effects of Hurricane Otis, Acapulco again began to be one of the main destinations for domestic and foreign visitors. This was demonstrated during the past Easter holidays and on the days that the Tianguis Turístico 2024 was developed, in which there was a hotel occupancy of 9,500 available rooms, which meant more than a 13 percent increase.

Little by little, this famous Pacific resort recovers the activities of the tourism industry and, in addition to starting to rehabilitate hotels, tour operators have returned to offer the products that for years have been distinctive of Acapulco, such as the emblematic nailed Playa Pie de la Cuesta (with its beautiful sunsets), Papagayo Park, Fort of San Diego, and Punta Diamante, and the iconic Quebrada, located in the old area of the port and in which visitors admire expert divers who throw themselves more than 30 meters high.
