Dubai to Salalah

All about planning a road trip to Salalah from Dubai

  • Preparation
  • Travel by Road
  • Hafeet Border

It takes a little under two hours to fly from Dubai to the Omani city of Salalah. But if you’d rather take the more scenic route, plan a Dubai to Salalah road trip and enjoy the picturesque sights till you reach the seashore capital of Dhofar, Salalah.

ABOUT SALALAH

The second-largest city in the Sultanate of Oman, Salalah is famous for its wide stretch of beaches, lush green spaces that come alive during the monsoon season and delicious cuisine. Not to forget the vibrant souks and many cultural experiences that this beachfront town offers to every traveller. The town’s unique location next to the Arabian Sea makes it a popular option for tourists and adventure seekers.

It’s a comfortable experience, provided you don’t mind a long drive. However, regardless of how many road trips in the UAE you have taken, it still pays to be prepared. Without further ado, here is how you can plan your Salalah trip from Dubai by road.

What should I bring before driving to Oman from Dubai by Road?

Bottles of water are important during your road trip considering you will be travelling through the desert. Apart from staying hydrated, here is what you need for the trip .

  • A reliable vehicle that has been serviced recently
  • Omani riyals
  • Power banks to charge your smartphone
  • Snacks

We can’t stress about cash enough considering that a lot of Omani petrol stations don’t accept credit cards.

How to travel from Dubai to Salalah by road?

A trip to Oman from Dubai by road is a relatively straightforward venture through a vast desert. You can take in the sights of the rolling dunes, camels and the serene stretch making it a worthy drive for hardcore road trippers.

For a start, here is what you need to know about the distance between Dubai and Salalah by road and the time it will take you to get to the city.

  • Dubai to Salalah Distance: 1,226 km
  • Drive duration: Approximately 12 hours

The speediest way to travel to Salalah from Dubai by road is via Route 31, following the Dubai Al Ain Road (E66). While the route may seem simple enough, we recommend relying on Google Maps to ensure you stay on track. Whether your ride is a four-wheeler or a regular sedan, make sure that it’s well-maintained . Repair shops are a fair distance once you start your journey.

Where do I fuel up?

There are dozens of petrol stations along the route to Salalah. So, unless you want to err on the side of caution, you don’t need to refuel at every other gas station along the way.

We recommend refuelling during long stretches with no stations. As an example, the longest stretch regarding fuel stations is between Haima and Thumrait which is three hours.  However, the significant factor is the car you are driving. Keep an eye on the fuel meter.

Passing through the Hafeet Border

You will be passing through the Hafeet Border during your road trip from Dubai to Oman. If you can, try to avoid trips during peak times or be prepared to face the rush. The border can become pretty crowded during the summer and winter holidays. So you and your road trip buddies may be in for a long wait at the border during this time.

GCC Nationals are allowed visas on entry at the border and the country’s eVisa system allows tourists an easier way to enter the country.  Make sure you check out the Oman visa cost for UAE residents .

Apply early for your e-Visa so it gets approved in time for your trip. If it doesn’t, you might have to get in line, and if the queue is long, there’s the long wait ahead to re-apply at the border in person. Charges also apply, so make sure that you have cash and/or credit card on hand.

Oman has spent a lot on its road systems; so, large potholes are something that you won’t have to worry about on your Dubai to Salalah road trip. As with most highways, it’s usually the drivers who present the most danger. Apart from reckless drivers, strong crosswinds can be a problem while crossing the city of Al Ain.

To avoid falling asleep at the wheel, we recommend taking breaks and having someone else from your party drive for a few hours.

When should I go on my Dubai to Salalah road trip?

If you want to complete the entire journey in one go we recommend leaving early in the morning to avoid driving at night when the roads may not be as well-lit.

The desert landscape will give way to smatterings of lush greenery an hour before you reach Salalah. And the long trip will have been well worth it. For the best experience, we recommend going between July and September when the weather is cooler.

Things to do in Salalah

The fun really begins once you finally reach Salalah. Here are some places worth a visit:

  • Al Fazayah Beach
  • Sultan Qaboos Masjid
  • Taqa Castle
  • Wadi Durbat

Review: Dubai to Salalah Bus Journey, Bus Time, Ticket Fare and Experience

Gulf Transport Company GTC Bus - Dubai to Salalah by Bus

This Post Contains

Dubai to Salalah By Road

Dubai to salalah bus journey, location of deira bus station, journey from dubai to salalah, the last hour journey from dubai to salalah, location of bus stop in salalah, recommended hotels to stay near bus stop in salalah, recommended apartments to stay near bus stop in salalah, dubai to salalah bus fare, experience of salalah to dubai / dubai to salalah by bus : great value for money, why you should travel from dubai to salalah by bus, when you shouldn’t travel from dubai to salalah by bus.

In addition to the flights, Salalah is accessible by road from United Arab Emirates as Oman and UAE shares a border. So all seven Emirates of United Arab Emirates;  Abu Dhabi ,  Ajman ,  Fujairah ,  Sharjah ,  Dubai ,  Ras al-Khaimah  and Umm al-Qaiwain (In Arabic: أبو ظبي, عجمان, دبي, الفجيرة, رأس الخيمة, الشارقة, أم القيوين) are connected to Oman and Salalah by road. So no matter where you are living in UAE, you can come to Salalah by Road. Other Gulf states like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait are also connected to Salalah by road through UAE. From Dubai to Salalah, the travel time is around 12 to 16 hours, depending on the type of vehicle.

Dubai to Salalah by bus is a very common mode of transportation and there is a daily bus departing from Deira 3 pm (Operator Name: GTC: Gulf Transport Company). This is 40 to 45 seats air-conditioned bus. This is the only direct Dubai to Salalah bus.

The other bus service is from  Mwasalat , but it runs Dubai to Muscat and Muscat to Salalah Bus service.

salalah bus tour from dubai

GTC Station is present in Deira Dubai. To avoid the last minute confusion, check the location:  Check the Contact Details and Location of GTC Office in Deira Dubai

We have traveled with bus (GTC) one time from Dubai to Salalah / Salalah to Dubai in Oct 2013. Bus from Dubai to Salalah departs in the afternoon 3 pm. The bus stop for GTC is in Deira, Dubai. It is highly recommended that you reach the stop at least 1 hour before the departure of the bus. There is no prior seat selection in the ticket, so the seats are occupied on first come first serve basis. If you come late may be your family will be split at different location across the bus.  This was the case with couple of families traveling with us.

The bus will have a direct journey to Salalah, but on the way there will 3 to 4 stops for praying, food and toilets break.

  • It is recommended to carry water, food, book, small pillow or blanket for a comfortable ride in the bus.
  • You are allowed to have one suitcase for luggage and one hand carry and that will not be weigh like airlines.
  • There will not be Wi-Fi in the bus so check with mobile service provider in UAE for activating GPRS (4G) on your phone in Oman.
  • Arrive at least 1 hour prior to the bus departure time and be the first in the queue to select the best seats

We reached Salalah next morning at 7 am. The ride of the bus is the best in the last 1 hour before reaching Salalah as you will be passing through the famous Dhofar Mountains, which are around 3000 feet in altitude. These mountains are green and have fog in Khareef season (July / August each year). The view of Salalah city from this elevation is extraordinary at dawn. So I would highly recommend that you focus on the last part of the journey and don’t miss it.

GTC Bus stop in Salalah is located on 23rd July Street, which is one of the main roads of Salalah. The bus station is located in City Center right next to the Central Market.

Since you are traveling by Bus, it’s better to stay near the bus stop. This will give you provision to stay in the center of the Salalah city, plus you can save the amount of Taxi fare to travel from the Bus stop to the Hotel. There are many Indian / Pakistani / Omani / Veg Restaurants at the walking distance from the bus station or the hotels nearby.

The hotels mentioned below are at the walking distance of the bus stop.

Both of these hotels are in front of the Iconic Sultan Qaboos Masjid, the largest masjid in Salalah and are near to K.M. Trading, one of the largest hypermarket in Salalah. There are many restaurants nearby to eat good food without paying much. Vegetarian and Pakistani / Indian restaurants are at walking distance from both of these hotels.

An Apartment is a great way to stay for a bigger family and reduce the cost of your stay. You can cook food in the kitchen and there will not a restriction of double occupancy like the hotel room. You can book Apartments at best rates near GTC Bus Stop, following are some of the apartments nearby:

The bus journey is pretty economical. In fact its unbelievable rates.  We paid OMR 18 (in 2013) for both ways ticket i.e. Salalah to Dubai and Dubai to Salalah. One way ticket was OMR 10. If you are staying away from Dubai office of GTC, the tickets can be booked by Beautiful Salalah International , Office in Salalah. They charge OMR 5 service charges for booking each ticket. Contact Beautiful Salalah International +968 9120 6678 or email [email protected]

In my opinion, Booking via Beautiful Salalah International is the easiest way to book the ticket else you have to go to Deira office, find parking for your car, waste time in going to Deira office.

You can lock your bigger bags and put them in the bus luggage compartment. You cannot travel with a lot of hand carry as there is a small over head compartment. Although, you can put hand carry luggage on your seat or besides your leg, if it cannot accommodate in the over head compartment.

Seats are okay as you can expect in a bus, don't compare with airline seats. The seats do not have big leg space so expect to be tired at the end of the journey. Keeping the luggage besides your leg will make your leg space even lesser. So pack a small hand carry or put the luggage in the bigger bags and put them in the luggage compartment.

No Seat Numbers:

There are no seat numbers on the booked tickets. Before the start of the journey, the passengers have to rush inside the bus well in advance and grab the best seats or if you are travelling with the family, you have to grab the seats together. Else all the passengers will not get the seats together. We have seen passengers sitting away from the family as the seats were not available together and passengers arriving early or managing to get inside the bus early have kept the places for them and not willing to move to another seat.

Stops on the way:

There will be several stops at restaurants during Dubai to Salalah or Salalah to Dubai journey for going to washroom and eating. The food served in these restaurants is not very hygienic and options are limited. It is advisable to take something with you for eating during the journey. Avail all these stopovers to get out of the bus, stretch your muscles and breath the fresh air. You can offer prayer on these stops as well.

Food and Water:

Food and water will not be served on the bus, you can bring your own food and water or else eat / buy at the stop over restaurants.

The advantage of travelling with bus is:

  • Cheaper ticket than airplane. Its a great value for money. For a big family this reduces the airline flights cost by two third.
  • No tension of driving from Dubai to Salalah.
  • No requirement of having driving license / vehicle registration / vehicle insurance.
  • No need to book hotel for travel night (as journey from Dubai to Salalah is on night time in the bus).
  • Specially useful for single passengers or friends or for those who loves to travel by road.

If you can afford air ticket, then best is to travel by air. The journey will be of 2 hours only.

If you are good at ling journey driving, drive your own car. You don’t have to pay ticket for each passenger when traveling in your car but have to pay for each passenger in bus journey. Driving your own vehicle will also give you freedom during the travel to stop wherever and whenever you want (although most of the area on the way is dessert and barren). In your car, the journey will cost you only for the fuel (the price of Petrol in Oman is cheaper than that in UAE). The documents required to cross the border with the vehicle is the valid Vehicle License (on your name else you will need additional authorization letter from the leasing company), valid Driving License and Insurance for the vehicle in both the countries.

Have a safe and memorable trip to Salalah

Dubai to Salalah

How to reach salalah from dubai.

The easiest and most preferred way to reach Salalah from Dubai is by flying there. The only direct flight is about 2 hours long. Since only one airline provides direct flights we suggest you book your tickets well in advance. Other airlines provide connecting flights with an average time of 5 hours, which is still quicker than road. However the road trip is much more beautiful and economical, with two route options one through the desert and one along the coast line.

Best Salalah Tours in Oman

Mountain Safari East Salalah Tour Full Day – Wadi Darbat / Jebel Samhan / Tawi Attair Sinkhole

from 21 reviews

Mountain Safari East Salalah Tour Full Day – Wadi Darbat / Jebel Samhan / Tawi Attair Sinkhole

This Full Day Tour will take you to a magical journey to the Eastern side of Salalah , where one of best landscape of the Middle East awaits you. This tour is called Jebel Safari or Mountain Safari as most of the journey is on the popular mountain series – The Dhofar Mountains , which are spread across Salalah in the shape of an arch. Jebel or Jabal is Arabic word for mountains.

The tour will begin with visit to the most popular valley of the Dhofar Region, Wadi Darbat will be your first stop. Here you visit a canal where you can do kayaking or boating overlooking the mountain of Jabal Al Qara. A cave is just around the corner, which you can see if the time permits. It would be a common sight to find camel and cattle grazing at the valley. The plantation here is unique, you will be able to see Buckthorn and wild fig trees.

Seeing the seasonal waterfall (if its there at the time of your visit) is another recommended thing at this valley. The waterfall is basically cascades of water amid the tangle of lush greenry. Interestingly, it is continuing from 2018 without stopping for a single day.

Also, you will see the Travertine Curtain , which is unique construction of the nature. Travertine Curtains are pockmarked rocks on the cliff face, which is a common geological formation in Dhofar. These marks happen when the original sand stone has been dissolved by the water. Here, a seasonal waterfall makes a landing from the valley to a rock pools that feeds Khor Rori.

Through a 20 minutes drive from Darbat on the mountains, which are green during khareef season, we will reach to the site of sinkhole. Tawi Attair Sinkhole , which translates as The Birds Well, is a unique place to visit. Tawi Attair is one of the world’s deepest sinkholes, measuring some 200 meters from top to bottom. It is actually that much deep that a fifty floor building can be fit inside it. Probably formed by the collapse of the roof of an enormous subterranean cave in the past.

Next stop will be Jabal Samhan , which is the highest point in Dhofar region and is above 4000 feet. It is worthy to note that the scenery becomes barren near the top, which is a contrast to the plantation you might be seeing on the way from Darbat to Samhan during drive. Depending on the weather, you may see clouds hugging the cliff of Jebel Samhan or the coastal of Mirbat if the weather is clear.

While descending from the mountains, two noticeable stops will be made. One at Wadi Hanna, where you will discover fine cluster of Baobab Trees . These are African trees and their presence here shows impressive botanical link of Dhofar with Africa. The other site is that of Magnetic Hill, also called Salalah Anti Gravity point . Car will drive here without any acceleration up to a speed of 50 kilometer per hour.

Mirbat Town has a fishing port and beautiful beaches, and a castle by the sea – Mirbat Castle. Old Town of Mirbat has old and abandoned houses and showcase the old architecture.

On they way back towards Salalah on the coastal highway, Sumharam Archeological site will be next stop where you can see the remains of an old city (3rd Century BC). This ancient city is one of the four components of the Frankincense Land and is in the UNESCO World Heritage List. A small on-site museum, Sumhuram Archeological Gallery, displays the relics excavated from the ancient port city. This is where the famous palace of Queen Sheeba is located.

Khor Rori is a lagoon (Creek) on the Arabian Sea, just besides Sumharam Archaeological Site. This is an ideal place for bird watchers. It is supposedly the best site for birds watching. Khor Rori is fed by the water from Wadi Darbat. You can see it from Sumharam.
