How To Visit Kawah Ijen – Volcano Lake & Blue Fire In Java

The Kawah Ijen volcano and crater lake is hands down one of the world’s most spectacular sights. Don’t leave Indonesia without seeing it, especially if you’re already visiting Java or Bali!

Ijen is the biggest acid lake in the world, and it’s also famous for a crazy phenomenon known as the blue fire, where you can see hot blue flame burning like lava in the dark.

The good news is that Mount Ijen is pretty easy to visit from Bali and other parts of Indonesia . Most people either visit Ijen on an overnight tour from Bali, or do it as a road trip combined with Mount Bromo and other epic sights in East Java .

This travel guide will explain how to get to Kawah Ijen, hiking tips, entrance fees, how to be safe, and everything else you need to know before you go!

UPDATE: Kawah Ijen will re-open on September 8, 2024, after being closed for two months because of seismic activity. Here is a link for the official announcement. Stay tuned! I’ll keep this blog post updated.

Where Is Kawah Ijen?

Mount Ijen is an active volcano crater located in East Java, Indonesia.

Kawah Ijen, which means ‘lonely crater’, is near the seaside town of Banyuwangi, which sits on the far eastern end of Java island.

Java was actually connected to Bali by land in centuries past, and even though the two islands are separated by water nowadays, you can still travel between them pretty easily.

How To Get To Kawah Ijen

There are three main ways to visit Kawah Ijen:

  • Drive and take the ferry from Bali , or
  • Fly to Banyuwangi and do the short drive to Kawah Ijen from there , or
  • Do a multi-day road trip across several points of interest in Java

I’ll explain each of these options below, and then we can discuss the hike itself.

• Drive To Ijen From Bali

Visiting Mount Ijen from Bali can be a good option because Bali is already so popular and easy to reach.

Kawah Ijen and Banyuwangi are connected to Bali by a ferry service that runs 24/7 (every 15 minutes). The ferries are dated but comfy enough, and they cross the Bali strait in just 30-45 minutes.

If you’re staying in the main tourist areas of south Bali, it’s a 4 hour drive to the ferry port at Gilimanuk, and then after crossing you’ll have to drive another 1.5 hours to Ijen.

In total, you can expect about 6-7 hours of transit time in each direction, so it’s not really possible to do this as a day trip from Bali. You’ll need a minimum of 2 days and 1 night.

You can easily arrange this trip with your favorite Bali driver or book a tour online , but I wouldn’t recommend driving a scooter all the way from Bali to Ijen because the road at Gilimanuk is notoriously dangerous for motorbikes.

• Fly To Banyuwangi

Banyuwangi has its own airport (BWX) and you can fly there from Jakarta or other places.

This can be one of the quickest and easiest ways to get to Ijen, and it’s still pretty economical. One way ticket prices are sometimes as low as 1 million Rupiah (~$70 USD). You can shop for flights to Banyuwangi at Skyscanner.

Once you’re in Banyuwangi, it’s still a 1 hour drive to Mount Ijen from the town, but you can easily arrange this with your hotel or book a shared tour online for as low as 600k Rupiah ($40 USD).

• Road Trip Across Java

Another great way to visit the Kawah Ijen volcano is to take an epic road trip across East Java , stopping at all the best sights like Mount Bromo , the Ijen crater, and some of Java’s famous waterfalls like Tumpak Sewu .

That was how we visited Ijen for the first time, and it was an unforgettable experience. The only downside is that a full road trip like this is more expensive, and it takes more time. Java is a big island and things are a bit spread out.

You’ll need at least 3 days, and even that’ll feel rushed. The nice thing is that you can organize a Java road trip starting or ending in Bali, or you can do it from a city like Yogyakarta in Java.

Take a look at my 1-week Java Travel Itinerary for more ideas!

Mount Bromo Kawah Ijen Tour

Mount Bromo is another epic volcano that’s popular to combine with Ijen for a Java road trip. Bromo/Ijen tours require at least 3 days.

Best Tours For Mount Ijen

Here are some good tour packages for visiting the Kawah Ijen volcano:

  • From Banyuwangi: Kawah Ijen Cheap Shared Tour
  • From Bali: Overnight Tour To Blue Fire Kawah Ijen Crater Lake
  • From Bali: 3 Day Overland Tour To Mount Bromo & Ijen Crater

We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Kawah Ijen Hike – What To Expect

Quick facts.

  • Distance: 6 kilometers (3.7 mi) return
  • Elevation Gain: 435 meters (1,430 ft)
  • Start Elevation: 1,865 meters (6,120 ft)
  • End Elevation: 2,300 meters (7,550 ft)
  • Duration: 3 – 5 hours return
  • Difficulty: Moderate

• Midnight Hike

The hike to the Kawah Ijen volcano normally starts with a midnight pickup from your hotel in Banyuwangi, a 1 hour drive to the park entrance , and then a crowded (but dull) hike up the mountain in the dark.

The main path is all dirt and fairly steep, but it’s well defined and family friendly. You will definitely work up a sweat because of the incline, so for people who don’t do much hiking I’d rate it as moderate.

The first 2 kilometers of the path is the steepest part, but then it levels out and becomes flatter when you’re getting close to the finish line. The hike to the top of Kawah Ijen has a one way distance of 3 kilometers (1.8 mi) and you gain about 435 meters of elevation (1,430 ft). That’s not including the blue flame section, of course. That comes later.

If you’re really feeling lazy (or in a hurry), you can pay the local sulfur miners to push you up the hill on their trolleys for like 400k Rupiah ($28 USD). Seriously! There are lots of these guys on the trail and they’re very persistent trying to sell rides. We found it annoying, but I suppose they wouldn’t be there unless plenty of tourists are happy to pay it.

In total, the hike to see the lake at Ijen takes about 1.5 hours depending on your pace. If you walk quickly I’m sure you could do it in 1 hour, and even slow hikers won’t take more than 2 hours to reach the lake.

A tour guide is not required for this hike, although it can be helpful to have one if you want to see the blue fire at Kawah Ijen.

For those of you who plan to skip the blue fire (like we usually do), you don’t need to start at midnight, although I’d still recommend you start early and try to reach the crater lake for sunrise if you want the best views and pictures of Kawah Ijen.

The sunrise here is not anything special in itself, and actually it’s blocked by a mountain, but the colors on the lake are nice and it looks downright mystical in the early morning. We started walking at 3 AM, and that was perfect.

• Kawah Ijen Blue Fire

After arriving at the crater lake, most tours will immediately start to hike down into the crater to watch the blue fire at Kawah Ijen. You can only see it in the darkest hours of night, so there’s a limited window of time to see it before the sun comes up.

This electric blue flame is a unique phenomenon caused by sulfur gas burning at temps of up to 600 °C (1,112 °F). The only other place on Earth where you can see ‘blue lava’ like this is in Dallol, Ethiopia.

Still, the blue flame (and the hike down into the crater) is completely optional . The path is crowded, it’s steep and rocky, there’s a nasty cloud of sulfur making it hard to see or breathe, and it’s very hard to get decent photos of the blue fire in the dark.

Unless you’re a pro photographer, you probably won’t get any great pictures of the blue flame (that rules me out). And even if you are, it’s still a big challenge to try to capture it with a camera at night with smoke swirling around.

If you decide to go down to the blue fire, this part of the hike takes about 45 minutes in each direction (plus an elevation change of ~150 meters), since you have to go back up from the same way you came.

• Kawah Ijen Crater Lake

The best thing to see at Kawah Ijen is the turquoise crater lake. It’s super photogenic, and I think the best time to take pictures is right before the sunrise or else a few hours after.

This 700-meter wide lake is actually the biggest acid lake in the world, and there are a bunch of different nice viewpoints around the rim of the Kawa Ijen crater.

The best photo spot is a ‘sunrise point’ with some twisted trees ( GPS here ) that you can reach with an extra 30 minutes of walking. After you reach the main view of the lake, just turn right and keep walking along the crater rim in a semi-circle until you find it.

If you have time, I would really recommend staying here after sunrise and waiting until the sun hits the Kawah Ijen lake itself. Most people leave before then, but the sun really lights up the turquoise color and it looks absolutely unreal.

• Sulfur Mining At Kawah Ijen

One of the unique things about the Kawah Ijen volcano is that it’s mined for natural sulfur deposits, which come from an active vent inside the crater.

This is one of the hardest jobs in the world because the workers are carrying 90 kilo (200 lb) loads of sulfur, while constantly being exposed to a smoke cloud with almost no protection. We saw guys using shirts over their mouths and some with no masks at all.

Breathing in sulfur like this 24/7 is terribly unhealthy, and if I had to guess, these guys probably won’t live to see old age.

The sulfur is used in cosmetic products, and the miners only earn about $15 USD per day, which is considered good pay in this part of Java compared to the living costs.

The work at Kawa Ijen is tough and dangerous

The other hurdle is that they have to carry the sulfur baskets up out of the steep crater, and then all the way down the mountain, making multiple trips per day.

Remember to give the miners the right of way while they’re working, and if you plan to take pictures of them you should ask permission before you whip out your camera.

Usually they’ll ask for a small tip in return for photos. We gave a guy 20k Rupiah (~$1) and he appreciated it. On a busy day, I’m sure they get plenty of tips!

Is Mount Ijen Safe?

Mount Ijen is generally safe to visit, but if you have asthma or any kind of breathing/health problems, I would definitely skip the blue flame and just enjoy the lake from above.

The sulfur cloud inside the crater is nasty, even with a gas mask, and the wind can blow it in your direction at any time. If you stay out of the crater, sulfur gas is usually not an issue and you won’t need a gas mask, although it still doesn’t hurt to have one.

It’s a good idea to check the current status of Kawah Ijen before you make travel plans, because it is an active volcano after all. The Indonesian government will close the park if they notice tremors or unusual activity.

Eruptions at Mount Ijen don’t seem to be very common, but they do happen from time to time. 49 Indonesian sulfur workers were killed in a gas explosion in 1976, and another 25 died in 1989. More recently, 30 local people were hospitalized by toxic gas after a small eruption in 2018, and a sulfur worker drowned in a 3-meter tsunami from the lake in 2020.

I don’t want to scare you, this is just a reminder that safety is never 100 percent with a volcano. But in the case of Ijen, I’d say it’s generally safe. The people most at risk are the locals working in the bottom of the crater 24/7.

If you really want to maximize your safety, you can skip the blue flame and stay outside of the crater. That’s where most of the accidents have happened over the years, and the best pictures of the lake are from above anyway.

With that said, the Kawah Ijen volcano does get hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, and those incidents are the only ones I’m aware of in the last 50 years, so I’d say it has a pretty good safety record overall.

If you visit Kawah Ijen with kids or older folks, I wouldn’t go inside the crater (especially at night), but instead just look at the lake from above. This trek is still very worthwhile even if you only see the lake.

Entrance Fee

  • Foreigners (weekdays): 100k IDR ($7 USD) / person
  • Foreigners (weekends): 150k IDR ($10 USD) / person
  • Domestic: 5k IDR / person

These entrance fees are current as of 2024.

Usually if you book a tour of Kawa Ijen, the entrance fees are already included in the total price of the tour, so that’s something you might want to double check with your tour provider.

Weather / Climate

Even though this is Indonesia, Mount Ijen can be pretty chilly before sunrise since it’s well above sea level.

Temperatures in the early morning can drop below 7 Celsius (45 F), and it can get windy too since you’re on an exposed mountain. However, after sunrise it warms up quite a bit.

It’s best to dress in layers, because when you’re hiking up the mountain you’ll warm up pretty quick and may even get hot.

Sample Itinerary For Mount Ijen

Here’s a sample of what your itinerary at Kawa Ijen could look like.

Keep in mind this is assuming you start from Banyuwangi and want to see the blue fire. If that’s not your plan, then you can do whatever you want, and you don’t need to follow this itinerary at all.

However, this seems to be the most common schedule for people visiting Kawa Ijen:

  • 12:00 AM – Hotel pickup and start the tour to Kawa Ijen.
  • 1:00 AM – Arrive at Mt. Ijen and start hiking to the top of the volcano.
  • 2:30 AM – Arrive at the top of the volcano and start hiking down into the crater.
  • 4:00 AM – Reach the bottom of the crater and witness the electric blue fire.
  • 5.30 AM – Watch the sunrise from the top of the Ijen volcano.
  • 8:00 AM – Start hiking back down to the main park entrance.
  • 9:00 AM – Arrive at the bottom and drive back to your hotel in Banyuwangi.
  • 10:00 AM – Done! Arrive back in Banyuwangi for brunch.

Again, if you’re not planning to see the blue fire at Kawa Ijen, then you don’t need to follow this itinerary at all, although I’d at least try to reach the top of the crater in time for sunrise if possible.

What To Bring

  • Gas Mask: If you plan to see the blue fire at Kawah Ijen, you’ll definitely need a gas mask for that part of the hike. These are usually included with tours, or you can rent them at the entrance for 45k Rupiah. We bought ours for 85k on Shopee and had them delivered to our hotel in Bali.
  • Goggles: Most people only bring a gas mask for the blue flame, but goggles can be helpful too since the smoke burns your eyes. Our goggles were included free with the gas masks we bought on Shopee.
  • Jacket: This is essential for the sunrise because it can be pretty chilly. After sunrise, it’ll warm up and then you’ll want to shed the jacket.
  • Footwear: Regular shoes are fine, but sturdy hiking shoes are better for the Ijen hike. Sometimes the gravel can be a bit slippery, and the trail is especially rough if you go down into the volcano crater.
  • Poncho: If you visit Mount Ijen during the rainy season in Indonesia (especially December to February), you’ll want to bring a rain jacket just in case.
  • Snacks: Your Ijen tour may include free breakfast, but they’re skimpy and you’ll probably be wanting energy snacks to go with it.
  • Headlight: A torch is handy for hiking before sunrise since the path is very dark. This is especially true if you go inside the crater, because it’s a steep and rocky path down to the blue fire.
  • Tripod: You’ll probably need this if you want to get decent pictures of the blue flame at night.

Other Tips For Ijen

  • Clothing: The sulfur smell is nasty and it stays on your clothes, especially if you go very close to the blue flame. Don’t wear nice clothes or jewelry. Silver especially will be tarnished by the sulfur. When you wash and dry your clothes, the smell will go away after awhile, but I still wouldn’t wear anything fancy for this trek.
  • Bathrooms: The last bathroom is at the entrance gate . Do your business before you start the hike. There aren’t any proper bathrooms on the trail to Ijen, although you can find plenty of tall bushes to pee in near the east side of the crater lake.
  • Cell Service: We had good reception with Telkomsel for most of the hike, including decent service at the top of the crater lake itself.
  • Drones: So far, drones are allowed at Mount Ijen and there aren’t any rules against flying them. There’s a lot of wide open space to fly without bothering people, especially if you keep walking along the rim and get away from the main crowds.
  • Restaurants: If you stop for food in Banyuwangi, check out Kedai Panorama , Srengenge Wetan , or Company Man Angkringan . Good food at reasonable prices!

Where To Stay

The main base for visiting Kawah Ijen is the town of Banyuwangi, and most people stay at least one night there since you do the Ijen trip overnight.

Banyuwangi has lots of decent accommodation now, with a variety of homestays and hotels, and because of the influx of tourists the options are growing every year.

If you want to stay directly at Ijen, check out Avrila Guesthouse . Their rooms are very basic, but the location is super convenient since it’s only a 3 minute walk from the entrance to Ijen!

Best Time To Visit

There’s not really a best month to visit Banyuwangi or the Kawah Ijen volcano, although any time in the dry season is better.

Indonesia’s dry season runs from April to November, and during this time there’s less rain and the mountain visibility is best. This applies to East Java too.

You can still visit Ijen during the rainy season in East Java (December to March), and the mornings are normally clear. Even if it happens to be cloudy, you can still see the crater lake.

Definitely try to avoid weekends and public holidays in Indonesia, because the park can get very crowded during those times.

Is Mount Ijen Open / Closed?

Kawah Ijen is open for tourists again starting on September 8, 2024! Here is a link for the official announcement.

It was closed temporarily from July 12 to September 7, 2024, because of an increase in seismic activity. However, the caution level was lowered to Level 1 (‘Normal’) again on August 13, 2024, and it’s expected to re-open shortly.

I’ll update this travel guide if the situation changes. You can also check on status updates for all of Indonesia’s volcanoes at Magma Indonesia .

Happy travels!

Health Certificate Requirement For Kawah Ijen (2024)

Since January 6, 2024, there’s a new requirement for all hikers to show a health certificate in order to visit Kawah Ijen. According to the new rule, tourists must be in good health, have no history of asthma or heart disease, and must show a health certificate from a doctor.

This new rule was prompted by the death of a 64 year old tourist from Jakarta on December 30, 2023, which was suspected to be due to exhaustion and heart disease.

The tourist who passed away was actually using a trolley service, not hiking, but the relatively high altitude and lower oxygen levels at Ijen could still be taxing for someone who’s not in good health.

You can get a health certificate from any clinic or hospital in the Banyuwangi area. It takes 15 minutes and the price should only be around 30k to 100k Rupiah.

This is a very new development and things could change at any time. According to Detik (Indonesian news) there’s already been some pushback from people unhappy with the new rule, and I expect it will probably be short lived, like usual.

More Things To See Near Ijen

There are lots of good things to see near Kawah Ijen and Banyuwangi, but two of the top sights are Red Island Beach (Pulau Merah) and Djawatan Forest , an old canopy that looks like Fangorn Forest from the Lord of the Rings movies.

A lot of tour packages for Ijen include a quick stop at Jagir Waterfall , and if you look around there are a bunch of other nice ones like Belawan Waterfall .

The Ijen caldera is absolutely loaded with waterfalls, and so is the rest of the Banyuwangi area. Near the park entrance, there’s even a unique acid waterfall called the Kalipait Waterfall that flows from the sulfur lake at Ijen.

Thanks for all the great tips. Love your photos as well! I’m heading to Bali in December from Boston and wondered which tour to Mt. Ijen you recommend. I’d like to do the 7pm pickup in Bali. Thanks 🙂

Hey there! Here’s a GetYourGuide tour with 9 PM pickup from Bali, although there’s a 2 pax minimum so that makes it a bit expensive. This Viator tour is a bit cheaper, but the pickup time is at 1 PM. Hope this helps. Have a great trip!

Perfect! Thank you

We are travelling to Java in 3 weeks and would love to see the blueflames with the Ijen tour. We saw that the activity level is currently back at level 1. Do you know if the crater is open during the night for the blueflame tour again?

Hi! The blue fire just re-opened as normal on August 12, and tours are going there again now. I double checked with two local sources living at Ijen and they confirmed.

Thank you so much for checking! We are really looking forward to it. Thanks again for your blog, it was really helpful! Kind regards, Nienke

Welcome! Have a good trip!

Hi David and Intan,

My husband and I have been making enquiries about seeing the Blue flames in the Ijen Crater. We’ve been met with a brick wall with a company we were hoping to book our whole trip with. They visit 5 volcanoes, including Kawah Ijen, but will only do the sunrise trek and won’t do the night trip to see the blue flames. Which we particularly want to do! They say they “don’t have any emergency contingency plan in place should anything go wrong” & also say the Crater is closed to visitors. We know by doing some research that it is not closed now. They then said that we could organise our own trip to see it but they would have no part in it. So that’s what we’re looking to do! Are you able to provide us with any reputable company or guide that can arrange this for us? Pick up from where we’d be staying, Blue flame tour and transfer back to the accommodation? Would they provide the gas masks? We are seasoned travellers and avid scuba divers ourselves and are very fit! Trekking to Machu Piccu 2017, Freedom Trail Trek 2018 and Everest Base Camp in 2019 all for a charity. We hope to do this volcano trek for the same charity too. Look forward to your response and loving your write up! Best wishes Elaine & Gary 🙂

Hi Elaine & Gary! Sorry to hear that about your tour company. Yeah, unfortunately it seems like some Ijen companies are slowly adjusting to the news about re-opening. Hopefully that changes before long. Do you know where you guys would be staying for the tour that night? Would your accommodation be in Banyuwangi or elsewhere? Or is it flexible? I’ll try to give a tour suggestion if possible. Thanks!

' src=

Hi David, We will be staying in the Ketapang Indah Hotel in the Banyuwangi in early October. Many thanks ! Elaine and Gary

Hi guys. Unfortunately it sounds like most Ijen tours are still starting at 2 or 3 AM and skipping the blue fire, even though it’s supposed to be open now. Is your trip date coming up soon? Hopefully things change before long. I’ll try to give an update and a tour recommendation as soon as I know more. Regards

Hi David, Thanks for your quick replies! Thanks for checking too. Our trip’s arrival in the area to climb Ijen is Oct 5th, that’s the night we were hoping to do the hike to see the blue fire, the group we’re with are doing the sunrise hike on the 6th leaving at 4am….one we were going to miss if we were doing the blue fire hike as we would have been picked up at midnight. However, we are hopeful, so if you’re able to give us an update and a tour recommendation when you know, we’d be very grateful. Thankyou.

Would be eager to hear from anyone who has seen blue fires after the re-opening. Many tourists on forums say they went but fires were not there. One wrote that miners put blue light to pretent fires just to get additional fee from tourists. Has anyone actually seen blue fires after August 12?

Hi. I saw some recent Facebook comments about that, but it sounded like they started the hike too late to see the blue fire. It takes 3 or 4 hours to hike from the entrance to the blue fire, which means you’re really supposed to start at midnight. That will put you inside the crater at about 3 or 4 AM, when it’s still very dark. I wouldn’t start the hike any later than 2 AM. If you reach the crater at 5 or 6 AM, there’s already morning light and you’re less likely to see any blue flame. I’m not sure why the tours are still starting late. It could be lazy tour operators, or maybe the Kawah Ijen management has changed their mind again about opening the blue fire route. Hopefully we can clarify soon.

We were just wondering if you had any further clarification on any tour companies doing the Blue Fire trips again, now it has re-opened? I’ve come across some companies that state they’re doing the Blue Fire trek but on reading the itinerary/small print you can see that they’re leaving far too late to catch the blue fire in the dark! Any further news on ones that pick you up at midnight and arrive at a decent time to catch them? Another thing I’ve noted, is that every 1st Friday of the month they close Ijen? Our tour company has changed the original itinerary because of this. So they’re now planning the sunrise trek on the Saturday Oct 7th. (Our previous comments above stated a different day) Any clarification will be appreciated. Many thanks. Gary & Elaine

Hi. We just talked to an Indonesian tourist from West Java who saw the blue fire on August 25. Here is her Instagram post about it, and as you can see it was putting on a great show. Lots of blue fire. My wife talked to her in bahasa and she told us they started hiking at 2 AM. We still haven’t found any tours going at midnight right now, and I don’t know why that is, but apparently you can still see the blue fire with the later start, if you’re lucky. If I was in your position, I would go ahead and book a tour with free cancellation (either through your main tour provider, or your hotel, or an online tour company ) and hope for the best, although sadly there are no guarantees you’ll see the blue fire. In the meantime, if I find a tour with an earlier departure I’ll post it here for you, as I still think that’d give you a better chance of seeing the blue fire. Hope this helps!

Hi David, Sorry for the late reply. Thankyou for getting back to us with your update. We fly out this weekend! I think we’ll play it by ear and see if anyone is offering any trips. Our tour company has also rescheduled a couple of days, so we may be too far from the Ijen area on the night we had originally proposed to see the Blue fire :-/ May be it’s not meant to be. Thank you for your help! We may not see any further posts as we’re not taking our laptop and may not have any internet to access this page on our phons to see if you’ve replied. We don’t get any notification that you’ve replied, we can only see you have when we go onto your page.

Good luck! I’ve heard from some more people who have seen the Blue Fire recently, but it still seems to be hit and miss.

Hi David! Update! Gary & I had been in touch with you before our trip. We have now returned. Climbed 5 volcanoes…..amazing! Our biggest highlight was the fact that we DID get to see the Blue Fire at Ijen!! We arranged it at the hotel reception when we arrived. It was a midnight pick up, an hour and 15 min drive. We had a coffee near the gates (they opened before 4am) we were the first to reach the bottom, complete with gasmasks, and took some amazing footage of the blueflames even with a.mobile phone. We just asked people to turn off their headlamps for a short time. Yes, the smoke was very overwhelming, gas masks were rendered useless for a few mins. But if you didn’t panic, as some do, then it was pretty scary. Some we saw heading down, shouldn’t have as they were so badly equipped… one wearing crocs! Buffs were not enough protection from the billowing smoke either. Alot were still queueing to go down as daylight came so they never got to see the Blue flames. So a huge thanks to your input and advice! We got to see it. Or guide was fantastic too.

Nice! Thanks for the update. Glad to hear a good report about the blue fire!

Great post by the way 🙂 I will follow some advice!

Hey David, amazing write-up. My wife and I are headed there for our honeymoon next week. Do you know if you need a guide? We have a driver and are both advanced hikers.

Hi Mohit, thanks for your comment. A guide isn’t really needed for the hike if you have a driver. He can take you to the entrance, and from there the path will be pretty clear since there are always lots of other hikers going up. A guide would probably be a good idea if you want to go down into the crater and try to see blue fire, though. That part is a bit harder to navigate in the dark. Regards

As of January 6th 2024, due to a series of incidents and a death, ALL hikers including locals and foreign tourists are required to get a medical health certificate before booking this hike. The cost is between 60,000 and 150,000 rupiah depending on the clinic you use. The certificate is valid for 2-3 weeks after issue and is gained the same day. There is also no longer the ability to hire a scooter or get a lift and do the hike yourself, all hikes must now be conducted with a licensed guide. I just arrived in Banuwangi and was going to book the online ticket to the park and just hire a scooter, although you can still buy tickets, you will not be allowed to enter unless you have a guide and the certificate. I will do a tour tonight from my homestay with these new rules in place.

Thanks, noted, although I expect that rule will probably be short lived (like usual). According to Detik there’s already been some pushback from Indonesians unhappy with the new rule.

yea I can imagine the same, but it was more a word of warning for the time being while it is enforced just so as not to catch any unsuspecting visitors to your page out. It nearly caught me out, although I always research all sites I visit as I don’t usually do tours unless I have to, but even a few of the tour operators i spoke to today as of the 9th Jan when I am doing my trip knew nothing about it.

Sure, thanks! Let us know how your trip goes and I’ll try to keep the article updated as well for anyone reading it in the future.

The blue fire was excellent, albeit very overcrowded and mismanaged, we saw about a dozen people turned away who had made the trip solo, like I had planned on a scooter. There are guides waiting around at the entrance point, so it is entirely possible people MAY be able to ride up with the doctors note and hire a local (possibly) I am guessing that these people either wanted to pay on arrival (Which isn’t possible now) or didn’t have the correct documentation or guide with them, cant say as we didn’t speak to any of them. So for now the easiest thing is a doctors note for around 100,000Rupiah (£5/$6) which includes weight, height, blood pressure, and heart rate assessment, whole process takes about 1 hour and certificate is issued immediately upon payment.

Great! Thanks for the update.

Hi, what type of mask did you have?

Hi. We bought our masks for 85k Rupiah on Shopee and had them delivered to our hotel in Bali. Masks are also included with Ijen tours, or you can usually rent them at the entrance for 45k.

Acid Crater Lake - Kawah Ijen Travel Guide

The Top Travel Guide to Kawah Ijen and the Blue Fire

Last Updated on April 29, 2024 by Sam

Located in East Java, Indonesia, the colossal Kawah Ijen volcano produces stunning ‘rivers’ of blue fire. Although this spectacular phenomenon can only be witnessed in the dark, the blue flames actually burn throughout the day. As a result, the most popular way to see the incredible blue fire in the crater of Kawah Ijen is by hiking to the summit on a sunrise tour. Also known as Mount Ijen, the volcano has more to offer than blue fire, as it’s also home to the largest highly acidic crater lake in the world. The unique nature of the volcano makes it a brilliant spot for sulphur mining. Many local miners hike Mount Ijen multiple times a day to extract sulphur, putting their wellbeing in danger despite the very low rate of pay. Toxic gases are regularly present at the volcano, and can sometime lead to it being closed off to the public, so it’s important to wear a gas mask at the summit for protection. This travel guide covers everything you need to know before you visit Kawah Ijen volcano – including information on the amazing blue fire, how to arrange a tour to Mount Ijen and more!

Table of Contents

Kawah Ijen Volcano Facts and Information

Kawah Ijen weekday entrance fee 2024 – 100,000 Rupiah.

Kawah Ijen weekend entrance fee 2024 – 150,000 Rupiah.

Kawah Ijen height – 2,799 metres.

Last eruption of Kawah Ijen – June 2002.

Kawah Ijen location – The border between the Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency of East Java, Indonesia.

How to get to Kawah Ijen

The closest city to Mount Ijen is Banyuwangi. It’s the most common place to stay when visiting Kawah Ijen, and is located around a 1-1½ hour drive away from the start of the hike. To get to Banyuwangi from Bali you will need to take a ferry. If you’re already in Malang, Probolinggo or somewhere else in Java, you can get to Banyuwangi by train or bus.

The ferry to East Java departs from Gilimanuk – a small port town on the west side of Bali. We recommend getting to Gilimanuk from Lovina beach as you have the option of travelling by bus or taxi. If you wish to travel by bus you have 2 options – the public bus or the shuttle bus. The shuttle bus from Lovina to Gilimanuk is the quicker option and costs 150,000 Rupiah each, whereas the public bus costs just 70,000 Rupiah but has no air con and can make a fair few stops along the way. Alternatively, you can opt to take a taxi from Lovina, which should cost around 300,000 Rupiah one-way to Gilimanuk.

Tickets for the ferry from Gilimanuk to East Java can be bought at the port and cost just 6,500 Rupiah. Ferries leave around every 45 minutes and take 45 minutes to reach Java. In our experience there weren’t many taxis available upon arrival in Java, so we recommend having an Indonesian SIM card so that you can order a Grab to pick you up. Alternatively you can try and arrange transport in advance through your accommodation.

If you are coming from Bali check out our 2 week itinerary to include on your trip!

From the port it should take around 15-20 minutes to get to Banyuwangi. In total the whole journey from Lovina beach to Banyumangi took us about 4 hours. If you want to travel from elsewhere on Bali the easiest way to reach Gilimanuk is by taxi, but the cost will vary depending on where you are coming from.

Click here to book your trip from Bali to Banyuwangi!

If you’re already in Java then the best option is to take a train. It takes around 5 hours by train from Probolinggo to Banyuwangi, or around 8 hours from Malang. Although buses are an option, they can take much longer as there is a lot of traffic in Java. We recommend booking train tickets in advance, especially if you plan to travel on a public holiday or during the weekend. You can book both trains and buses in advance on Traveloka’s website.

Once you are in Banyuwangi you are well placed to reach Mount Ijen. You can either arrange a tour/transport from Banyuwangi itself or alternatively you can stay in one of the villages along the road to Ijen. There are a number of homestays in these villages, most of which are able to help you arrange a tour to Mount Ijen.

It’s worth knowing that there isn’t much to do in these villages, which can make it a peaceful place to stay but also means there isn’t much to do other than visit Ijen!

Alternatively you can book a tour from Bali to Kawah Ijen on Get Your Guide. If you’re going to book a tour from Bali we recommend booking a combined Mount Ijen and Mount Bromo tour so that you can enjoy both of these spectacular volcanoes. Although these tours are more expensive, they’re a good option if you’re on limited time or just don’t want the hassle of sorting it all out for yourself.  Click here to check out the tours available on Get Your Guide!

Crater Lake - Mount Ijen Travel Guide

Best time to visit Mount Ijen

The best time to visit Mount Ijen is between April and October as this is the dry season. If you choose to visit during November and March it is the rainy season so the path can be quite muddy and slippery, which will make the hike substantially harder.

To see the famous blue fire (often mistakenly referred to as blue lava) you need to hike to the crater of the Kawah Ijen volcano before sunrise. This requires a very early start as it takes around 90-120 minutes to hike to the crater viewpoint. To get there in time you realistically need to start the hike a minimum of 2 hours before sunrise, but preferably even earlier if possible!

If you aren’t interested in seeing the blue flames and would like to avoid the crowds then you can start the hike slightly later. By starting the hike up at around sunrise it will be less busy as most visitors will already be at the top by then. Unfortunately it’s not currently possible to visit at sunset as the crater closes at 12pm each day.

Although the majority of Western tourists often overlook Mount Ijen in favour of visiting Bali, it has become an increasingly popular spot to visit. For Indonesian tourists though, Kawah Ijen is a major attraction. This means it can get extremely busy during weekends and public holidays.

If you have the time, we recommend to plan an extra day or two in the area. Occasionally toxic gases are released from the crater, which results in Mount Ijen being closed off to tourists. If you’re unlucky enough to visit when it is closed, staying an extra day or two could end up being the difference between being able to visit and not being able to visit! Allowing the extra time also gives you a better chance of seeing the blue fire at the crater if you don’t make it in time on the first try.

Crowds at the summit - Kawah Ijen Travel Guide

Mount Ijen Tour

The easiest way to visit Mount Ijen is by taking either a private tour or group tour from Banyuwangi or one of the nearby villages. As the blue fire can only be seen in the dark, most tours visit Kawah Ijen early so that you can see this unique phenomenon before you watch sunrise from the crater. This requires a very early start, with the majority of tours departing from Banyuwangi between 12am and 1.30am.

We recommend booking a private tour to give yourself the best chance of seeing the blue fire. With a private tour you will have a greater say over the departure time and so, in theory, you can arrive as early as you want. Private tours to Mount Ijen from Banyuwangi vary in cost depending on the operator but prices start from around 350,000 Rupiah per person. Generally this is for a minimum of 2 people and won’t include the entrance fee.

If you don’t have the budget for a private tour then we recommend booking a group tour with the earliest departure time as this will give you the best chance of arriving in time to see the blue fire. Group tours will have set departure times, but some operators depart earlier than others. We visited Mount Ijen on a group tour and only briefly managed to see the blue fire as the tour departed too late.

Even though we completed the hike to the crater in 60 minutes we were able to witness the blue flames for just a few minutes before it was too light to see anymore. It was an extremely frustrating experience for us as we had been promised we would arrive in time, but the tour let us down. If seeing the blue flames is important to you then make sure to take the earliest possible tour! Group tours also vary in cost, but a reasonable price to pay is around 150,000 Rupiah excluding the entrance fee.

There are 2 main ways to book tours to Mount Ijen – through your accommodation or online. Whichever you opt for it’s important to check reviews online before committing, as that way you can avoid ending up in a similar situation to us! If you can’t find any reliable information online then it’s probably safest to choose another operator with good reviews.

It’s also worth noting that the earlier sunrise is, the earlier you will want to depart. Sunrise at Mount Ijen varies from around 5am-5.45am depending on the time of year, so make sure your tour arrives in plenty of time for you to make it to the crater before dawn!

Hiking Mount Ijen

Assuming that you’re taking a sunrise tour to see the blue fire, then it will still be dark when you arrive to the Mount Ijen car park. If your tour includes a gas mask and headlight in the price then make sure to get these from your operator. Gas masks are available to rent at the start of the hike, but alternatively you can bring your own. After you’ve got everything you need, it’s time to begin the climb.

The first kilometre is uphill but shouldn’t prove to be too much of a challenge. In contrast the second kilometre is very steep and we personally found it extremely tough. We recommend taking your time at this point and even stopping if you need to as it is the hardest part of the hike. Once you’ve finished that section there is around another kilometre and a half to go until you reach the summit of Kawah Ijen. Although this section is still uphill, it’s thankfully nowhere near as tough as the second kilometre.

It takes around 90-120 minutes to hike to the summit of Mount Ijen from the car park. That being said, the hike can be completed in less time if you are relatively fit. We managed to complete the hike in around 60 minutes as we went as quickly as possible in order to see the blue flames. If you aren’t used to strenuous physical activity then it may take longer than 2 hours to reach the top, so it’s worth keeping that in mind if you want to see the blue fire!

The viewpoint at the summit of Kawah Ijen offers great views of the crater and its large acid lake. When you arrive at the summit it is still likely to be dark, so you won’t be able to enjoy these views until after sunrise. In the darkness you will be able to see the blue fire that Ijen is famous for, but for the best view you need to actually hike down into the crater.

Viewpoint of Kawah Ijen crater lake

Blue Fire at Mount Ijen

As long as the conditions are good, then you are able to hike from the summit of Mount Ijen down into the crater. The advantage of doing this is that it allows you to get a better view of the blue flames. It’s particularly important to have a headlight at this point as it would be virtually impossible to do in the dark as the path is very uneven and rocky. Although it’s quite challenging, it’s manageable if you take your time. It should only take around 30-45 minutes to hike down into the crater.

Before descending into the crater it’s very important to put on your gas mask. Plumes of poisonous clouds filled with hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide rise from within the crater and can engulf you in a matter of seconds. This can make it very hard to breathe and inhaling the gases can be very dangerous, hence the importance of wearing a gas mask. The sulphuric gases produce a terrible smell similar to that of rotting eggs, which your mask should also help protect you from. It’s also a good idea to have protective eyewear as the gases can cause your eyes to sting badly. As we didn’t have anything to protect our eyes we had to keep them closed each time the plumes came in our direction.

The blue fire at Mount Ijen is often mistaken for lava, but it is actually light created as a result of sulphuric gases combusting. Gases escape through the cracks in the volcano at high pressure and temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius (1,112 degrees Fahrenheit). When these gases react with air they ignite and send flames up to 5 metres high. Some of these gases condense into liquid sulphur and continue to burn while forming ‘rivers’ of blue fire on the slopes of Ijen. These ‘rivers’ are the reason that the blue flames are often mistaken for lava.

Although the phenomenon of blue fire occurs both day and night at Mount Ijen, it is only visible in the dark. For this reason it’s important to arrive as early as possible so that you can observe the blue flames before sunrise. If you arrive too late or take too long to hike up, then you’ll miss your chance. Blue fire such as this rarely occurs elsewhere in the world, making Mount Ijen one of the best places to see it. It’s a truly incredible spectacle, so it’s well worth the early start!

For the best view of the blue fire you have to hike into the crater of Mount Ijen, but you should still be able to see it from the summit viewpoint.

Unfortunately we didn’t manage to get any pictures of the blue fire as we only just arrived in time to see it. Considering how late our tour arrived we were lucky to see it at all. If you want to see pictures of the blue fire we recommend checking out this National Geographic post!

Mount Ijen summit

Kawah Ijen Crater Lake

While the blue fire is the main attraction for many, Mount Ijen is also home to the largest highly acidic crater lake in the world. The water in the crater lake is a distinctive turquoise-green colour and contains both hydrochloric and sulphuric acids. As a result, the pH of the water is less than 0.3, which means it is capable of dissolving metal – so you definitely don’t want to be going for a swim here!

The acid lake at Kawah Ijen can be seen from the summit viewpoint, but if you want to get up close you need to climb down into the crater. By going into the crater you are able to stand right at the shores of the lake and enjoy this impressive work of nature up close!

Miners at Kawah Ijen

For the majority of people, hiking Mount Ijen is a once in a lifetime chance to enjoy its unique nature. In contrast, for some Indonesians it’s the scene of a daily struggle to extract sulphur from the crater. This sulphur mining is extremely tough work. The sulphur miners have to hike into the crater of Mount Ijen and then carry around 70-90 kilograms of sulphur on their backs as they climb out of the crater, before descending back down the volcano. Miners are only paid a tiny amount for this gruelling work – around 800-1,000 Rupiah per kilo of sulphur. The pay is so bad that some miners make multiple trips every day just to earn more money to provide for their families. Even with multiple trips, miners generally earn less than $10 USD per day. We found the hike tough enough anyway, so we can only imagine how hard it is while carrying 90 kilograms on your back!

It’s important to be respectful of the miners when you visit Mount Ijen. Make sure not to get in their way as they want to go as quickly as possible to complete their work. Their hard work is undoubtedly impressive, but at the same time is a sad sight as they risk their wellbeing due to a lack of alternative work available to them. Many of the miners have been trekking up Kawah Ijen almost daily for years just to earn a living. Due to the presence of toxic gases in the crater they risk their health, potentially losing years from their lives and, in some cases, dissolving their teeth. Although some of them have gas masks, the miners are often unable to afford replacement filters and so they are relatively ineffective.

Due to the increased presence of tourists at Mount Ijen, the miners have begun making small sulphur figures and ornaments. They sell these at the summit of the volcano to help supplement their income. These figures are relatively inexpensive, starting at around 25,000 Rupiah each depending on the size, so we recommend buying one to help support the miners.

Shoes – Wear some comfortable shoes with good grip. On the way down the path can be slippery and having good shoes can make a big difference!

Bring lots of water – Climbing Mount Ijen can be pretty tough at times so it’s important to stay well hydrated. Make sure to have at least a couple of litres of water with you so you don’t run out.

Gas masks  – Some tour companies provide ineffective gas masks, so it’s important to check that you’re given one in good condition. Alternatively, you may want to buy your own gas mask in advance. If you’re going to do that we recommend getting some goggles to protect your eyes too.

Get there early for the blue fire!  – We’ve already said it but it’s worth saying again – if you want to see the blue fire make sure you arrive as early as possible. It’s only visible in the dark so as soon as the sun rises it can no longer be seen. Make sure to either pick a tour that arrives early or alternatively pay for a private tour and insist on arriving as early as possible!

Tours  – As we mentioned earlier, we didn’t have the best experience with our tour and we regret not opting for either a private tour or an operator with better organisation. Despite being promised we would arrive in plenty of time to see the blue fire, we only just managed to hike up in time to see it. Even then, it was only possible as we managed the hike to the summit in around 60 minutes, as opposed to the usual 90-120 minutes. We booked through our homestay as it seemed convenient, but this backfired as tours through homestays can be very hit and miss. For a better experience, we recommend going with a more reliable tour company so that you can make the most out of your trip to Kawah Ijen.

Food – Different tours offer different things, but from what we saw most didn’t provide any food before the hike. Once you return to the car park after the hike some operators provide a light breakfast such as bananas or soup. Personally, we were a bit surprised no food was provided before we started the hike. We would advise stocking up on some snacks for the day, as otherwise you may have to go a long time without eating. If you don’t get chance to do this there are some stalls selling snacks at the car park.

Get a lift up Mount Ijen  – If you’re finding the hike too steep it’s actually possible to get a lift up Mount Ijen. Groups of 2-3 locals pull carts up the hill and are willing to pull tourists up the majority of the way in exchange for payment. It looked like incredibly tough work to us. The cost of being pulled up in one of these carts is 800,000 Rupiah for a round trip.

Guides are pushy literally – Some of the guides at Mount Ijen are extremely pushy when making their way into the crater. They seem to have a complete disregard for other people on the path and will push past you in order to try and get their tour group to the bottom first. This can be quite frustrating, but in reality it’s best just to let them past so that you can take your time as you make your way down.

Don’t wear silver jewellery  – If you have any silver jewellery, make sure to leave it at your accommodation when you climb Ijen. If you don’t, the silver will react with the sulphur and turn black!

Where to go next  – After you’ve visited Kawah Ijen, we recommend heading to Probolinggo to visit the beautiful Mount Bromo and stunning Tumpak Sewu waterfall. Probolinggo is around a 5-hour train journey away from Banyuwangi, and it’s well worth the effort to see more of Java’s incredible nature.

Indonesia's Blue Fire Volcano, Kawah Ijen

Visit this alien landscape in the middle of the night

Marc Dozier/Getty Images

Indonesia's Kawah Ijen volcano, located near the eastern tip of Java island , is a relatively ordinary volcano by day. OK so it's kind of terrifying, as most volcanoes are, but there's nothing about it that outwardly separates it from any of the other hundreds of volcanoes in this island country.

To learn why, you'll need to head to the base of the volcano just after midnight, and hike up and into the volcano's crater. It's no easy task—you'll trek more than four miles and ascend to heights of nearly 10,000 feet, with only the light of the moon to guide you—and that's if it's out.

Inside Kawah Ijen Volcano

You'll also need a gas mask: When you begin your descent into the crater, toxic sulfur fumes blow over you, marring not only your ability to breathe but also your visibility. (It's for this reason that you should also probably bring a local guide with you—but more on that in a minute).

Around the time the clock strikes three or four, you'll have arrived at the bottom of the crater, and laid your eyes upon one of the most alien sights on our planet: Blue fire spewing out of the ground! The vibrant blue hue of these flames, which results from heavy sulfur deposits in the volcano, is best seen during the darkest part of the night, hence your needing to wake up long before the crack of dawn.

The Dark Side of the Blue Light

As you continue marveling at the azure beauty unfolding in front of you, you might notice dozens or even hundreds of men around you, moving feverishly—and without gas masks. These are sulfur miners, residents of small villages around the base of the volcano, employed by the Chinese company that owns the mine.

Think your trek was difficult? The miners carry approximately 88 pounds of powdery, toxic sulfur at a time, in two baskets connected by a beam of bamboo and suspended over their shoulders, over the same distance—and probably faster than you walked it. They also earn less than $7 (yes, that's U.S. dollars) for their effort, in spite of the fact that  sulfur has an extremely high commercial value .

The miners won't mind you being there (although, again, you should probably take a guide) but it's customary to tip them 10,000-20,000 Indonesian rupiah   so they can buy cigarettes—smoking is their favorite creature comfort, which is perhaps ironic given the damage the sulfur fumes almost certainly inflict upon their lungs. Hopefully, in the future, local people won't need to do this backbreaking work, and the only reason to go down into Indonesia's blue-fire volcano will be tourism.

Kawah Ijen Guided Tours

When it comes to guides, several Indonesian companies offer tours, but the best way to go about seeing the blue fire of Kawah Ijen volcano is to hire a local guide. One highly-recommend guide is Sam from Ijen Expedition , a young man who resides in the Taman Sari township at the base of the volcano.

Sam is not only passionate, professional and fluent in English, but invests proceeds from his tours into education in his village, which will decrease the dependency of locals on mining jobs, ultimately increasing the quality of their lives. One day, he hopes, there will be no sadness felt at Kawah Ijen volcano—only amazement!

How to Get to Banyuwangi

As far as how to get there, you have a few options. Blimbingsari Airport near Banyuwangi has recently opened for limited flights, but if you aren't able to get on one of those, you have two relatively easy options.

The first is to fly to Denpasar Airport in Bali , Indonesia's busiest tourist hub, then take a ferry over to Java Island, which drops you directly in Banyuwangi for easy pickup by your guide. The second option is to fly to Surabaya, the second-largest city in Indonesia, and the then take the approximately six-hour train journey to Banyuwangi from there.

No matter how you arrive to Banyuwangi, make sure to keep in mind that your trek will probably start around midnight. While some tourists prefer to arrive around this time and get right to it, others prefer to get there early in the morning and spend the entire day resting in preparation.

Making your Way to and up Kawah Ijen Volcano

Beginning your ascent at around 2 am in the morning is all fine and well when you’re rested with an 8-hour sleep behind you, this was not the case for me –  I was totally out of my comfort zone.

I was living in tropical Indonesia which meant the extent of my ‘winter’ clothes was a thin jacket and a pair of long exercise tights. Thank goodness I still had my beanie and gloves from the trip to Mount Bromo (we were doing the Mount Bromo Ijen crater tour – for 3 days ) , but I was really battling the cold and lack of sleep when we began.

Why 2 am? Well this is the time you need to leave if you want to see the blue fire Kawah Ijen has to offer!

Is the Kawah Ijen blue fire worth walking up at this ungodly hour for? Well let’s get there first and see…

The Mount Ijen hike is not really a hike in the definitive term, much rather a steep walk (similar to Mount Bromo but without the steps) . The path is completely paved but it is steep and winding. I’d say hiking Ijen isn’t really hiking at all.

Myself as an average gym-goer stopped a few times to catch my breath (important to remember this is normal as the air gets thinner when climbing altitude ; Mt. Ijen is 2386m above sea level), but the great thing about trekking uphill is that it gets the blood pumping and within the first 10 minutes I was warm!

I was gradually starting to pull off a few clothing layers.

image of the path walking up to Kawah Ijen showing the steepness of the slope - kawah ijen volcano

🔎 INTERESTING OBSERVATION: Another strange thing you’ll encounter on your journey up to crater Ijen is the secondary option of making your way up the hill. There are men with carts that you can pay to pull you up the hill (and when I say pull – I MEAN PHYSICALLY PULL) . There are no motorized bikes attached to the cart or animals etc, this is a man or men who will with their own strength pull you up this hill whilst you lay comfortably in a cart. I have perplexing views on this option. As cruel as it may seem to the average onlooker, one must understand that for these locals, this is a form of income and as labour-intensive as it is, the price tag is in line with the effort. The price of the cart pull can be anything between IDR 600 000 to 1 million (check your exchange rates with XE Currency ). We did not take this option but it’s available.

At the halfway mark, there is a little pit-stop shop selling some warm drinks and snack meals. We along with our guide had a little sit down there before we continued to ascend to the blue fire Ijen promised.

Kawah Ijen Blue Fire Viewing

image showing the kawah ijen crater blue fire flames in the darkness - kawah ijen volcano

Once you reach the summit point of Kawah Ijen volcano, approximately 2386m above sea level, before sunrise you may get the chance to see the Ijen blue flames.

The reason why I say may have the chance to see, is because it’s not consistently there, it depends on the gases that day.

On our trip, we were able to see some small electric blue flames, which was VERY COOL, but there have been reports of people seeing flames a couple of metres high which would really be quite incredible to see.

Despite only seeing the small flames at Kawah Ijen Mountain Indonesia, it was still something I had never seen in my life and something to tick off the bucket list, so still pretty extraordinary.

trip kawah ijen

Whilst sitting, surrounded by darkness, since you’ve stopped walking, the cold creeps over you and it starts to get pretty uncomfortable.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:  What I would’ve done for a small blanket to wrap around me while we watched the flames! Definitely recommended if you’re one who gets cold easily (which I am not) so for those who really get cold- you’ll need one, but more about that in the what to wear section

Reaching Kawah Ijen Crater

trip kawah ijen

TRAVELIST FYI: At the time of our visit to Kawah Ijen, we were not allowed down to see the Blue Fire Ijen crater up close, this was unfortunate as I was really hoping to go down to the edge of the lake and see the sulphur up close even after sunrise.

Despite not being able to venture down to the lake’s edge, the experience was still a good one . After viewing the Ijen blue flame whilst shivering in the darkness, it was time to venture further to find some warmth.

Littered around the crater edge were some dead-looking shrubs but there was also some guides who make made some makeshift little fire pits.

OH MY GOSH, I WAS SAVED!

I sat there literally for as long as I could getting my torso, hands and legs (consequently my tights as well) as close to the warmth-generating saviour.

TRAVELIST TIP: Be sure to check with your tour guide and company before the trip if it is safe to venture down to the Ijen Crater Lake during your trip

Sunrise: Kawah Ijen Volcano in full view

Again, I needed to be torn away from the warmth to a cliff which was the Kawah Ijen sunrise viewpoint. Despite, needing to cuddle hard in the dark icy abyss, watching the sunrise creep above the mountains was absolutely stunning.

It was really beautiful but also a HUGE surprise to see what the surroundings really looked like.

We had been upon this crater ledge for the last 3 hours but had pretty much no idea what actually surrounded us.

I was shocked, just behind us was the most beautiful lake I had ever seen.

trip kawah ijen

The colour of Lake Ijen was something that honestly looked like some sort of concoction of magical potion.

The large mass of milky, turquoise, mermaid green-blue was mesmerizing. It was truly unlike anything I had ever seen in my life.

I was just still so shocked that the whole time we had been up there in the darkness, this magical volcanic Kawah Ijen Lake had just been sitting there waiting for us to behold once the sun had risen.

I was quite spellbound. You could sit and stare for hours.

trip kawah ijen

On the sides of the Kawah Ijen Lake Indonesia, you could also see the burning sulphur and smoke billowing upwards. Luckily for us, the wind direction was actually not blowing towards us, so there was no real need to wear gas masks while standing on the crater rim.

The Kawah Ijen volcano crater lake rim was lined with a number of dead trees.

They were beautiful. The burnt wood skeletons all twisted and curled looking like something from a Harry Potter novel,  I loved it.

trip kawah ijen

Taking pictures of the trees was far more interesting than taking pictures of myself.

TRAVELIST TIP:  Photography can be tricky with the light on Kawah Ijen volcano. Most of the pictures you will get during these hours will be half lit due to the sunrise, regardless of this, if you’re interested in the landscape then that’s all that should matter. If you’ve got mad photo editing skills, then you definitely won’t have a problem, editing the light issues.

Although the sun had risen, I was actually still freezing.

I was really struggling with the cold here for some reason, It felt significantly colder than Mount Bromo or Mount Penanjakan.

I felt very uncomfortable having to take off gloves to take photos and did not actually want to spend as much time as I’d like being up there because I was so cold.

Lake Ijen Volcano

Ijen crater lake has a diameter of approximately 1 km and is about 200 meters deep. The water in the Kawah Ijen acid lake is very warm, about 35℃. You can touch the water, however, it’s not recommended and prolonged contact with water will cause skin irritation.

trip kawah ijen

The lake has an acidity level of 0.5 (VERY ACIDIC!) The acidic crater lake’s shores and embankments are a natural deposit of sulfur is the home of sulfur mining, which has been mined and extracted by sulfur miners for the last 700 years.

The colour of the acid lake is caused by the acidity of the water, which is a mixture of hydrochloric and sulfuric acids and other dissolved metals. The colour of the lake is dependent on the volcanic activity below, the lake can change its colour from turquoise to green and even gray on occasions

Under the depths of the lake, there is volcano magma, Thankfully, as the lake is very deep with dense water, magma remains locked at the bottom. When the volcano erupts, lava does not surface, we only experience increased methane gas.

This was truly an adventure that I would’ve never thought of taking if it wasn’t for it being part of a combined tour, I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to see this incredible natural wonder in Indonesia.

Now onto the nitty-gritty details. If you’re looking for how to exactly plan this trip to Kawah Ijen Banyuwangi, below is a comprehensive guide on everything you need to know about visiting and planning a trip to Ijen.

🚆 OPTION 2: If you want to do the Surabaya Ijen tour there is also the option to take the train to Banyuwangi. The Kawah Ijen Surabaya 6-hour journey is definitely doable and not too bad depending on which train class you choose.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: The Surabaya Bromo Ijen tour is EXTREMELY popular and highly recommended! The Surabaya Bromo Ijen tour price will vary depending on what your inclusions and exclusions are and can range from 4 million IDR upwards. This is the option we chose for the Bromo Ijen tour from Surabaya.

Banyuwangi to Ijen

🚗 The best option is to take an Ijen tour. Banyuwangi is a good base city to stay in with good hotel options and restaurants etc. The Ijen trip is approximately a 1-hour drive.

Kawah Ijen Volcano Weather

trip kawah ijen

How cold is Mount Ijen? Well, Mount Ijen weather in the early morning or before sunrise temperatures can be as low as 8 to 12 °C (46-53 F°). The weather on the Mount Ijen tour in the late morning and afternoon will be around 22 to 25 °C (71 to 77 °F).

Kawah Ijen Volcano Climbing Difficulty

Climbing the Ijen Mountain itself to the crater rim is not technically difficult in the sense of needing to physically climb. The Mount Ijen Java path is completely paved and walkable, the difficult aspect comes in with the incline itself. It is steep!

You fail to realize the steepness though since you are walking in the dark (thankfully), but returning after sunrise descending you’ll definitely need to watch your footing on your way down. There is however a second option instead of walking to the top.

If you think the walk will be too steep it’s actually possible to get a lift up and down Kawah Ijen.

trip kawah ijen

As mentioned above local men pull carts up the hill and are willing to pull tourists up the majority of the way in exchange for payment. The cost of being pulled up in one of these carts is generally between IDR 600,000 to 1 million. It is usually one person per cart, but I have seen a mother and children being pulled up.

We did not need the cart option, it is a service offered and these men really should be compensated accordingly if you use their service- it is incredibly hard work and some of these men are really not young, it’s amazing to see their strength.

Kawah Ijen Crater Tours

The Mount Ijen Blue fire tour is something that NEEDS to be on your Indonesia trip itinerary! As a result of the growing popularity of this unique destination, there are now many tours that can easily help you visit this natural wonder. These are some of my recommendations:

⭐ MOST REVIEWED OVERNIGHT TOUR ➡️ Overnight Mount Ijen Tour from Bali (Best for those short on time in Bali)

⭐ MOST REVIEWED MULTIDAY VOLCANO TOUR ➡️ Active Volcanoes Tour (Bromo and Ijen) from Surabaya 3 Days and 2 Nights (Best for those looking to see both volcanos)

⭐ MOST BOOKED VOLCANO & WATERFALL TOUR ➡️ Mount Bromo, Ijen and Tumpak Sewu waterfall 4D3N tour from Surabaya ending in Bali (Best for those looking to make the most of East Java and then continue to Bali)

Mount Ijen Tour Prices and Entrance Fees

The Ijen Crater tour price will depend on whether you are doing this as a single destination or combined with other destinations.

The price for a private tour for an Ijen blue fire tour (day tour) starts from under IDR 1,000,000.

Use XE Currency exchange checker to see what your country’s exchange rate is to the Indonesian Rupiah

💡 FYI: A combined tour like the Ijen Bromo tour can range from IDR 4 000 000 for 3- 4 days including visits to Mount Bromo , Tumpak Sewu Waterfalls and Madakaripura waterfalls .

I strongly recommend seeing Ijen, Java Indonesia and especially East Java as it has some incredible natural beauty so make the most of your trip and combine it with other attractions.

TRAVELIST TIP: There are two types of tours that you’ll find advertised: Private trips and Open trips. A private trip means it will just be yourself or the people of the group you’ve booked with. An Open trip means a combined much of people visiting the destination together. There are pros and cons of both private and open trips. I feel that for me doing an open trip Ijen would’ve not been suitable because we were are to get up to see Ijen crater blue fire and back down fairly fast and easily and in an open trip, you’d have to go at the pace of the group .

trip kawah ijen

💡 PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: Our tour Ijen price was IDR 4 million per person. It was 3 days and 2 night and included Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and Ijen Crater, Accommodation, drivers, guide and all entrance fees were included. The only exclusions were lunch and dinner. This is an EXTREMELY GOOD DEAL. The Mt Bromo Kawah Ijen package tour was a PRIVATE TOUR from Surabaya. In light of COVID-19 these prices may actually have come down, so you might get a better deal.

There is an  Ijen Entrance fee  which is IDR 150 000 Indonesian Rupiah, If you are visiting with a tour company, make sure to see this is included in your tour price.

TRAVELIST TIP: Be sure to check your inclusions and exclusions in Mount Bromo Ijen tour packages prior to booking. Things like entrance tickets, drivers, guides, masks, food etc. may seem mandatory, but if something is not stipulated – ASK!

💡 PERSONAL OPINION: There have been many articles stating how you should never take the first price provided and that locals are out to cheat foreigners and overcharge or even scam you . THIS IS NOT TRUE! The tours that I have recommended above are reviewed and operated by reputable companies using local guides and drivers. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING A TOUR COMPANY for the reasons that the jobs are given to locals and this is their source of income and you are also contributing to the growing economy of this third world country. I also believe that the people reporting being scammed and overcharged are not using reputable and reviewed guides and agents. Most local guides, companies and drivers are charging the figures listed above. If you are getting a deal vastly different from what’s listed above , then perhaps its shady and you should look elsewhere. Things that are too good to be true, usually aren’t!

What to Wear to Climb Mount Ijen

trip kawah ijen

Not sure what to wear? Mount Ijen is cold! So dress warmly, like seriously you need to wear warm clothes in layers.

Warm Jacket  – something not too heavy (Down jackets are great and easy to fold up and pop back into your backpack)

Long Thin Top  – to wear under your jacket to shield you from the chill after the jacket becomes too much

A vest or Thin Activewear Top  – to wear under your thin top (You might be questioning whether you need 3 layers – typically I get hot and here 3 layers were not enough for watching the blue flames or sunrise)

Beanie  – My ears were freezing, it’s recommended!

Gloves – my fingertips were going numb, you need these.

Gas Mask/ Buff – unlike Mount Bromo, there’s no volcanic ash or dust thankfully, but depending on the wind direction on the day you visit, your guide should provide you with a gas mask in case there are severe toxic fumes. I suggest keeping a mask/buff in my backpack anyway.

Headlamp or torch: There is no lighting as you head up the path to Kawah Ijen, I would highly recommend having a headlamp or handheld torch. Using your phone is an option but you also will be depleting your battery unless you have 2 phones.

Sports Sneakers or Shoes with a bit of Grip  – closed shoes are recommended for the walk up but hiking boots are not essential for the terrain is more or less a paved area, but the steepness is evident when heading back down, so be careful because it can be quite slippery.

A thin blanket:  This one might just be for me, but regardless of how many clothes I was wearing, I was still freezing. A small carry blanket would’ve been great for comfort whilst watching the Mt Ijen blue fire

Light Day Bag or Backpack  – for your camera gear, water and to put your layers in after you’ve taken them off.

⚠️ CAUTION: This is only if you are descending into the crater – Don’t wear silver jewellery – If you have any silver jewellery, make sure to leave it at your accommodation when you climb Ijen. If you don’t, the silver will react with the sulphur and turn black

TRAVELIST TIP: There is no toilet at the top of the crater, so make sure to go before you start your climb. There is a paid toilet facility (it’s a squat toilet and will cost approximately IDR 2 000 Indonesian Rupiah)

What is the Blue Fire Ijen Volcano Indonesia has?

trip kawah ijen

One of the major tourist appeals of visiting Kawah Ijen is not only the incredible sunrise of the volcano and crater but also the famed blue fire.

The blue fire is created by ignited sulfuric gas, these toxic gases rise up from cracks. The flames can be up to 5 metres (16 ft) tall depending on the day you visit.

The Sulphur Miners of Kawah Ijen

One of the very overlooked aspects of this ever-popular tourist destination is that of the sulphur miners that summon unbeknown strength carrying their glowing yellow loads multiple times from the crater to the rim.

Mount Ijen and its volcanic crater lake serve as the office to these incredible humans. This article from Wowshack Indonesia truly puts into perspective what these men go through on a daily basis to earn an income. It’s incredibly insightful – PLEASE HAVE A READ.

Were My Mount Ijen Expectations Met?

Has the Kawah Ijen crater and Blue Fire Ijen crater met my expectations? Yes and No.

I was in awe of some aspects of this destination. The volcanic crater lake is magnificent, It’s truly something that I’ve never seen in my life and it’s the largest volcanic crater lake in the world!

However, I was disappointed that I was unable to descend into the crater itself to see the sulphur and lake up close but it was due to safety concerns so I NEED TO ACCEPT THAT.

I also was probably naive in thinking I was going to see huge electric blue flames or blue lava etc on my trip (I did see something though for which I must be thankful for).

I was also extremely uncomfortable throughout the majority of the trip as a result of the cold. I’m not really someone who gets cold (especially in Indonesia) so this was strange and unnerving for me, but it hindered me from actually enjoying the scenery and surroundings for as long as I’d usually spend at a destination. If I was warmer I think I’d give the experience a 9/10 instead of a 7/10 where it currently stands for me.

How to climb Ijen? Is Mount Ijen hard to climb? Well as explained above, trekking Kawah Ijen or the Ijen crater hike, u003cstrongu003edoes not involve any trekking at all in the true sense of the wordu003c/strongu003e. Mount Ijen u003cstrongu003ehike difficulty is probably a 4/10u003c/strongu003e with 0 being effortless. u003cstrongu003eI say 4 because it is a steep walk,u003c/strongu003e but the Ijen trial its safe, secure and paved so it is still simply walking. While the exact age of Mount Ijen isn’t stated explicitly in my research, volcanoes like it are formed over thousands to millions of years through repeated eruptions. Kawah Ijen Tour From Bali – The Ultimate Ijen Crater Hike Guide

Posted on Last updated: December 2, 2020

If you’re an adventure and hiking fan, you need to add the Kawah Ijen sunrise hike to your travel bucket list. Kawah Ijen is an active volcano in East Java, and one of the few places in the world where you can see blue flames.

When I found out about it on my first Bali, I decided that I couldn’t miss out on this experience. We did a Ijen crater tour from Bali , and while being pretty knackering, it was one of the highlights of our trip.

If you’re also planning to do the Mount Ijen sunrise hike, this is the guide for you! In this post I’ve outlined everything you need to do about doing the Kawah Ijen night hike, whether you do it yourself or with a tour .

I’ve included some basic information about this incredible natural phenomenon, how to get there, what to expect, what you need to bring and some Ijen crater tour options to choose from.

So let’s dive in and start planning your Bali to Mount Ijen tour!

About Kawah Ijen

Kawah Ijen is on the island of Java in Indonesia , an island famous for its spectacular temples and wild nature. Ijen is actually a group of composite volcanoes.

Kawah Ijen is the highest and the one with the largest crater, which most travellers visit and hike due to the blue flame phenomenon.

The blue flames of Kawah Ijen are a natural phenomenon visible only here due to the combustion of sulphuric gases. Kawah Ijen is an active volcano, but it doesn’t erupt lava as you would expect.

The eruptions are actually of methane and other gases, which make it particularly dangerous as they can’t be predicted like normal eruptions.

The Ijen crater is filled of bright turquoise water, which despite being beautiful to see, is actually extremely acidic.

Mount Ijen has a dramatic and dangerous beauty to it. Doing a Mount Ijen sunrise tour, hiking up at night to see the blue flames and sunrise is an experience I recommend to all outdoors adventure lovers.

How to get to Mount Ijen from Bali

Ijen is in East Java. To get there from Bali you need to drive for around 4 hours (from the main tourist parts of Bali like Ubud, Seminyak or Canggu) to Gilimanuk, where you then get a 1-hour ferry to Java, and then for a final 1-hour drive to the base of Kawah Ijen.

The easiest way to get to Ijen from Bali is do to an organised tour , since they will handle all the transfers and you will then have a guide to support you during the hike.

You can also get there without a tour by either renting a scooter, renting a car or a combination of buses. While it might be cheaper I personally think it would add quite a lot of faff to an already long journey and isn’t worth it.

Our experience doing a Mount Ijen sunrise tour from Bali

We set off from Seminyak at 6pm on the Friday. We did 4- hour minivan drive to Gilimanuk, where we got a 1-hour long ferry to East Java, and then another 1-hour drive to the base camp of Kawah Ijen.

We were ready to be up all night, so spending the car journey sleeping if you can is the best way to ensure you are fresh for the hike.

We were told to wear warm clothes as it can get cold on top of the volcano, and stupidly dismissed it wondering how cold it could really be.

Unsurprisingly, we were wrong and as soon as we stepped out of the car we were greeted by the chilly mountain air.

Looking down in the crater of Kawah Ijen

As our guides explained some of the basics about climbing Kawah Ijen they also handed out warm coats to the foolish people like me that didn’t bring one, along with headlights to climb up in the dark and gas masks for the sulphur gases.

At 2am we set off from the base camp and started hiking under the starry sky. Being a city girl born and raised, I don’t often get to see the night sky unaffected by light pollution, and it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

The hike can be intense and quite steep at parts, but the path is easy to walk since there is an almost paved path, as it used every day by the sulphur miners. It was easy also because we were continuously supported by our guides.

Harry and the other guides know the volcano inside out, and it was fascinating to hear their stories of when they hiked Kawah Ijen as sulphur miners.

The Blue Flames of Kawah Ijen

After the first steep 45 minutes the path flattens out a bit, which makes the second half of the hike easier.

When we were about to approach the peak we were advised to put on our gas masks, as we were downwind form the mines and the sulphur was blowing in our direction.

After 1.5 hours of hiking under the stars we made it to the top, just in time to see the  blue flames . This natural phenomenon happens due to the combustion of sulphuric gases.

The gases emerge from cracks in the rock at high pressure and temperature, and when they come in contact with the air, they ignite, creating the blue flames.

When we were there we weren’t allowed to go closer to the flames or inside Ijen crater due to the high levels of methane. Depending on the season and daily weather conditions you might be able to go inside the crater.

While the blue flames were undeniably cool, it wasn’t the highlight of the tour for me. The beauty of the landscape, hiking under the starry sky and the unforgettable sunrise were what made the experience so incredible for us.

The Kawah Ijen Sunrise

Once we decided we had seen enough blue flames we started hiking once again. This part was considerably easier since the area around the crater of the volcano is pretty much flat.

We walked all the way around the crater to the east side, where we sat to wait for the sunrise. That moment of trepidation, sat with other hikers as the sky began to lighten was truly magical.

As the sun came up everything around us became golden, revealing the beauty of the Mount Ijen landscape.

We spent a couple hours at the top, enjoying the warmth of the rising sun and exploring the top of the crater, admiring the turquoise lake beneath us.

The hike back was considerably easier, although a little hard on the knees. On the way back we saw the sulphur miners carrying bamboo baskets, filled with up to 70kg of sulphurs on their shoulders.

Enjoying the morning light after the night hike

Enjoying the morning light after the night hike

It’s crazy to think that we hiked Kawah Ijen as tourists, admiring the beautiful night sky, the peculiarity of the blue flames and acid lake, and the stunning sunrise, while others were hiking it at our same time but for work, trying to make a living.

That is one of the things I love about travelling, you see new things and meet new people, and it makes you reflect on your experiences and how you affect those you meet.

If you want to find out more about the job of the sulphur miners at Kawah Ijen you can check out this documentary by the  BBC  or article by  CNN .

Once we made it back to the base camp we then drove off to a traditional Javanese family house, for a typical Javanese breakfast. After being up and hiking all night this was much needed and appreciated.

We then got in the car and got ready to nap on our 6-hour journey back to Bali.

Can you hike Ijen without a guide?

It depends on your fitness and confidence level. The trail itself is fairly easy and well marked. There are also so many people going up between tourists and miners that it’s almost impossible to get lost.

However if you want to go down inside the crater the path is a little trickier, and having a guide help you and show you where to put your feet will make it much easier.

Personally I was glad to have a guide with us. Our guide used to work as a sulphur miner and had lots of interesting stories about Kawah Ijen. It was also one of my first night hikes so I was glad for the extra support.

If you’re an experienced hiker and have done lots of night hikes before you would be fine without one. Just rent a gas mask at the base of Ijen, follow the crowds and you’re sorted.

Is doing a Ijen crater tour from Bali worth it?

It ultimately depends on how long you have in Bali, but personally, I don’t think so.

While there’s no doubt that hiking under the Milky Way, seeing the natural phenomenon of the blue flames and that stunning sunrise is a magical experience, it’s also a knackering one.

On my first trip to Indonesia I only had 10 days in Bali . Taking 24 hours out of that to see Ijen destroyed us, and we spent the few days after that in Ubud just recovering from the night hike and long journey.

If you have longer in Indonesia then yes, I think you should do it. If I were to go back and hike Ijen again I would do one of the following options instead.

Do a 3-day Ijen & Bromo tour from Bali – The journey from Bali to East Java is pretty long and knackering. I recommend visiting also Mount Bromo while you’re at it.

That way the long bus and ferry journeys will be spread out and not back to back in 24 hours, and you’ll see also one of the most stunning natural landscapes in Indonesia.

Click here to find out more about doing a 3-day Bromo & Ijen tour!

Borobudur, Bromo & Ijen tour from Yogyakarta – Alternatively you can also do a 4-day tour from Yogyakarta. This tour also includes a visit to Borobudur, one of the most beautiful temples in Indonesia.

It’s the perfect alternative and gives you the opportunity to see more than just Bali. However it’s quite a long trip so best suited for those who have a long time to spend in Bali.

Wandering around Borobudur just after sunrise

Hike Mount Batur in Bali instead – If you’re tight on time and can only visit Bali, but really want to do a volcano night and sunrise hike, then I would recommend hiking Mount Batur instead.

Sure, there are no blue flames and the landscape is completely different, but you will still get the night hike experience, without having to take 24 hours out of your day to do so.

Where to stay for your Mount Ijen hike

If you’re doing your Ijen crater tour from Bali it doesn’t really matter where in Bali you’re staying, since it will usually include pick-up and drop-off.

I’ve listed below some of the places I stayed at during my two trips to Bali, which I particularly liked and can recommend.

In Ubud:  Desa Visesa  or  Komaneka at Monkey Forest

I stayed in Ubud twice on separate occasions and in very different types of hotels.

The first time I stayed at Komaneka at Monkey Forest, located right in the centre of Ubud, an easy walking distance to all the main attractions.

Despite being so central it wasn’t noisy, and the resort is very beautiful. I also stayed in a resort called Desa Visesa, which was a bit outside the centre of Ubud but they offer a free shuttle service in the town centre.

Both offer standard rooms at affordable prices, or private villas with pool if you’re looking for something a bit fancier. They’re both also very Insagrammable hotels , perfect for those picture perfect holiday shots!

In Cepaka:  Villa Sungai

If you’re willing to splurge a bit on your Bali trip, Villa Sungai is the place to do it. Villa Sungai has been featured multiple times in luxury travel magazines and has won multiple awards.

The property itself is beautiful, with outdoors bathrooms and private pools. The staff are simply stunning and really go out of their way to make your stay there unforgettable. It’s one of the best private pool villas in Bali .

In Canggu:  Pondok Homestay

In Canggu we stayed at Pondok Homestay , a lovely property a short 20 minute walk down to the beach. For 24 EUR a night we had a private ensuite room with air conditioning and a pool.

The property was just off the main road and next to a rice field, away from the noise of the busy street, which made it a very quiet and pleasant place to stay.

What to bring to hike Kawah Ijen

If you choose to do a Ijen guided tour they will provide you with the essentials like gas mask and a warm coat.

You don’t need much besides the usual travel essentials, but I’ve listed below some things that you should remember to pack.

Warm coat – I know what you’re thinking, you’re going to Bali, you don’t want to bring a warm coat with you! With a tour they should give you one, but better safe than cold!

Water bottle – There are no services whatsoever once you start the hike, so make sure to bring plenty of water with you for the hike!

Comfortable walking shoes – You don’t want your feet to hurt half way through the hike. Bring some comfy walking shoes with you and you’ll be sorted for a night of hiking!

Head torch – You’ll be hiking in the dark after all! They should give you one if you do a tour, but if you’re hiking alone you will definitely need one, even if there will be lots of lights from other people hiking.

Kawah Ijen: The Volcano with Blue Fire and Acidic Lake

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see blue fire in nature? Or how about a lake that is so acidic that it can dissolve metal? If you are looking for a truly extraordinary and unforgettable experience, then you should visit Kawah Ijen, a volcano in East Java, Indonesia, that has both of these phenomena.

Kawah Ijen is one of the most active and beautiful volcanoes in the world, and it is also one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes you can do. You will have to wake up in the middle of the night, trek for about three hours in the dark, and wear a gas mask to protect yourself from the toxic fumes. But the reward is worth it: you will witness the blue fire, a rare natural phenomenon that occurs when sulfur gas ignites in contact with air, creating a mesmerizing blue flame that can reach up to five meters high. You will also see the crater lake, a turquoise-colored body of water that is the largest acidic lake in the world, with a pH of 0.5. And you will enjoy the sunrise, a spectacular sight that will illuminate the landscape with different shades of orange, pink, and purple.

In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about visiting Kawah Ijen, including how to get there, what to expect, and what to bring. We will also share some tips and insights that will help you make the most of your trip. Whether you are a solo traveler, a couple, a family, or a group of friends, you will find something for everyone in this amazing adventure.

How to Visit Kawah Ijen

There are several ways to get to Kawah Ijen, depending on where you are coming from and what your budget and preferences are. Here are some of the most common options:

Photo of Kawah Ijen 1/2 by

If you are in Bali, you can take a ferry from Gilimanuk to Ketapang, which takes about an hour and costs around 10,000 IDR (0.7 USD) per person. From Ketapang, you can take a bus or a taxi to Banyuwangi, which is the closest town to Kawah Ijen. The bus takes about an hour and costs around 20,000 IDR (1.4 USD) per person, while the taxi takes about 30 minutes and costs around 150,000 IDR (10.6 USD) per car. From Banyuwangi, you can join a tour or hire a driver to take you to the base of the volcano, which is about an hour away. Alternatively, you can book a tour package from Bali that includes transportation, accommodation, and a guide for the hike. This option is more convenient and comfortable, but also more expensive, ranging from 1,500,000 IDR (106 USD) to 3,000,000 IDR (212 USD) per person, depending on the quality and duration of the tour.

From Yogyakarta:

If you are in Yogyakarta, you can take a train to Banyuwangi, which takes about 12 hours and costs around 200,000 IDR (14.1 USD) per person. From Banyuwangi, you can follow the same steps as above to get to the base of the volcano. Alternatively, you can book a tour package from Yogyakarta that includes transportation, accommodation, and a guide for the hike. This option is also more convenient and comfortable, but also more expensive, ranging from 2,000,000 IDR (141 USD) to 4,000,000 IDR (282 USD) per person, depending on the quality and duration of the tour.

From Banyuwangi:

If you are already in Banyuwangi, you can join a tour or hire a driver to take you to the base of the volcano, which is about an hour away. A tour usually costs around 300,000 IDR (21.2 USD) per person, and includes transportation, a guide, a gas mask, and breakfast. A driver usually costs around 500,000 IDR (35.3 USD) per car, and does not include a guide, a gas mask, or breakfast. You can also rent a motorbike and drive yourself to the base of the volcano, which costs around 100,000 IDR (7.1 USD) per day, plus fuel. However, this option is not recommended for inexperienced or solo riders, as the road is steep, narrow, and dark.

The best time to visit Kawah Ijen is between April and October, when the weather is dry and clear. The rainy season, which lasts from November to March, can make the hike more difficult and dangerous, as the trail can be slippery and muddy, and the visibility can be low. The entrance fee to the volcano is 100,000 IDR (7.1 USD) per person on weekdays, and 150,000 IDR (10.6 USD) per person on weekends and holidays. The opening hours are from 1:00 AM to 2:00 PM , but the best time to start the hike is around 2:00 AM, so you can reach the top before sunrise and see the blue fire.

What to Expect from the Kawah Ijen Hike

The hike to Kawah Ijen is not for the faint-hearted, as it is physically demanding and mentally challenging. The hike starts from the base of the volcano, which is at an altitude of 1,850 meters above sea level. The trail is about 3 kilometers long, and ascends to the rim of the crater, which is at an altitude of 2,380 meters above sea level. The trail is mostly paved and well-marked, but it is also steep and uneven, with an average slope of 25%. The hike takes about two to three hours, depending on your fitness level and pace.

Once you reach the rim of the crater, you will have to descend to the bottom of the crater, which is another 800 meters down. The trail is not paved or marked, and it is very rocky and slippery. You will also have to wear a gas mask, as the sulfur gas is very strong and harmful to your lungs and eyes. The descent takes about 30 minutes, and the ascent takes about 45 minutes.

At the bottom of the crater, you will see the blue fire, which is only visible in the dark. The blue fire is caused by the combustion of sulfur gas, which escapes from the cracks in the volcanic rocks. The gas burns with a blue flame, creating a surreal and stunning spectacle. The blue fire can be seen from 2:00 AM to 4:00 AM, and it is best to see it from a safe distance, as the gas can be unpredictable and explosive.

You will also see the crater lake, which is a turquoise-colored body of water that fills the crater. The lake is the largest acidic lake in the world, with a pH of 0.5, which means it is almost as acidic as battery acid. The lake is also very hot, with a temperature of 40°C. The lake is so acidic that it can dissolve metal, and it is also very dangerous, as it can release toxic gases and cause landslides. The lake is not suitable for swimming or touching, and it is best to admire it from a safe distance.

You will also see the sulfur miners, who are the local people who work in the crater. The sulfur miners collect the solidified sulfur, which is yellow and crystalline, and carry it in baskets to the base of the volcano. The sulfur miners can carry up to 90 kilograms of sulfur per trip, and they make up to four trips per day. The sulfur miners earn around 900 IDR (0.06 USD) per kilogram of sulfur, which means they make around 324,000 IDR (22.8 USD) per day. The sulfur miners work in very harsh and hazardous conditions, and they face many health risks, such as respiratory problems, eye irritation, skin burns, and back pain. The sulfur miners are very friendly and resilient, and they are happy to pose for photos and chat with visitors. However, they also appreciate some tips or donations, as they have a very low income and a very hard life.

After you explore the bottom of the crater, you will have to climb back to the rim of the crater, and then hike back to the base of the volcano. On your way back, you will enjoy the sunrise, which is one of the most beautiful and rewarding parts of the hike. The sunrise will light up the sky with different colors, and reveal the stunning scenery of the volcano and its surroundings. You will see the contrast between the blue lake, the yellow sulfur, the green vegetation, and the brown rocks. You will also see the steam and smoke that rise from the crater, creating a dramatic and mystical effect. The sunrise can be seen from 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM, and it is best to see it from the rim of the crater, where you can have a panoramic view of the landscape.

What to Bring for the Kawah Ijen Hike

The hike to Kawah Ijen requires some preparation and equipment, as it is a challenging and adventurous activity. Here are some of the essential items that you need to bring for the hike:

Photo of Kawah Ijen 2/2 by

Hiking shoes: You will need a pair of sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes, as the trail is steep, rocky, and slippery. You will also need to protect your feet from the heat and the sharp sulfur crystals. Avoid wearing sandals, flip-flops, or sneakers, as they can cause injuries and blisters.

Warm clothes: You will need to dress warmly, as the temperature at the volcano can drop to 10°C or lower at night. You will also need to protect yourself from the wind and the rain, as the weather can change quickly and unexpectedly. Wear layers of clothing that you can easily adjust, such as a t-shirt, a sweater, a jacket, and a hat. Avoid wearing cotton, as it can absorb moisture and make you feel colder. Opt for synthetic or wool fabrics, as they can keep you warm and dry.

Gas mask: You will need to wear a gas mask, as the sulfur gas is very harmful to your lungs and eyes. The gas mask will filter out the gas and allow you to breathe normally. You can buy or rent a gas mask at the base of the volcano, or you can bring your own. Make sure the gas mask fits well and covers your nose and mouth. Avoid wearing glasses, as they can fog up and impair your vision. If you wear contact lenses, make sure they are comfortable and moist.

Headlamp: You will need to bring a headlamp, as the hike starts in the dark and there is no lighting on the trail. The headlamp will help you see the trail and avoid obstacles. You will also need it to see the blue fire and the lake at the bottom of the crater. You can buy or rent a headlamp at the base of the volcano, or you can bring your own. Make sure the headlamp has enough battery and brightness. Avoid using your phone as a flashlight, as it can drain your battery and distract you from the hike.

Water: You will need to bring enough water, as the hike is long and strenuous. You will also need to stay hydrated, as the altitude and the heat can dehydrate you. You can buy or refill water at the base of the volcano, or you can bring your own. Make sure you drink enough water before, during, and after the hike. Avoid drinking alcohol, coffee, or soda, as they can dehydrate you and affect your performance.

Snacks: You will need to bring some snacks, as the hike is energy-consuming and you will need to replenish your calories. You will also need to eat something before the hike, as you will start the hike on an empty stomach. You can buy or bring some snacks, such as nuts, bars, fruits, or chocolate. Make sure you eat something light and easy to digest. Avoid eating spicy, greasy, or heavy food, as they can upset your stomach and make you feel sick.

Camera: You will need to bring a camera, as the hike is full of amazing and unique sights that you will want to capture and remember. You can use your phone, a digital camera, or a GoPro, depending on your preference and budget. Make sure your camera has enough battery and memory. Avoid using flash, as it can ruin the natural light and disturb the wildlife. Be respectful and mindful of other hikers and miners when taking photos, and ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Best way to hike Kawah Ijen in Indonesia (with or without a tour) – Full Guide

The highlight of our Indonesia trip, the Kawah Ijen hike was an extraordinary experience. The Ijen volcano is famous from its Blue Flames lighting up the darkness at the bottom of the volcanic crater, the sulfur gases hovering over the turquoise-blue acid lake and the workers with one of the hardest job in the world. It’s an experience that you will never forget. Check what is the best way to climb Kawah Ijen with a tour or without it.

Kawah Ijen hike with a tour or without a tour - the best way to hike Ijen

When we were planning our Indonesia 10 days itinerary I knew that I definitely want to visit a volcano during our trip. I’ve always pictured Indonesia like a land of volcanoes covered in the morning mist. And that’s when I found out that one very interesting volcano, Kawah Ijen, lies very close to Bali, where we were planning to go. It’s a place, that cannot be missed.

The most unique volcano.

Mount Ijen is a volcano located in the Banyuwangi Regency on the East Java, Indonesia. It is actually a complex of volcanoes lying inside a 20 km-wide caldera. Ijen volcano with its turquoise colored acid lake belongs to that complex.

The hike to Kawah Ijen is very special in comparison to any other the volcano hikes in Indonesia. There are amazing views, stunning geology, picturesque sunrise, acid lake and the feeling of another world. However, what really makes Ijen volcano so different, is a human factor. The experiences from the bottom of the volcanic crater will make you rethink your own life.

I can assure you that the Kawah Ijen tour would be one of the most beautiful and emotional hikes in Indonesia that you can do.

Take a Kawah Ijen Tour

If you’d rather do Ijen hike with a tour company, there are many to choose from. Especially the tours to Ijen Crater from Bali. You can go on a one day trip with a hike or even get a private 2-day tour to Ijen from Denpasar and back. As you can see from the text below, it is worth to still get a guide, even though you might think you don’t need one. The guides are usually the ex-mineworkers and they know a lot about the volcano and the mining job. They will also help you to get the best pictures of the Blue Flames without getting suffocated by the sulfur gases. Our guide was really the best and judging by the Indonesian people who I met on our trip – most of them will be great.

Do a Kawah Ijen hike without the tour

I normally prefer to plan things myself and decide as we go. That’s why we decided to organize the whole structure of the Kawah Ijen tour on our own. In the end, we still did the Ijen hike with the guide, which was a great idea.

Below are the steps that you need to take to travel from Bali to Ijen and then to the bottom of the volcano. I also describe the whole Ijen hike, the experience in the crater and the job of sulfur miners.

#1 How to get from Bali to Ijen?

– take a bemo from pemuteran to gilimanuk.

The closest town for climbing Ijen from the direction from Bali is Banyuwangi.  To get there, you first need to go to Gilimanuk on the west north end of Bali to take a ferry to East Java.

If you do a round trip around Bali, I recommend stopping by in Pemuteran and its black beaches before heading to East Java. You can stay by the beach in a beautiful bungalow . To get from Pemuteran to Gilimanuk you can take a bus (called bemo) or a taxi.

Taxis are quite expensive and we opted for the bemo. There are many bemos running around, you just need to wait a bit by the road and you will see one. Bemos are the small red buses, usually quite old. They don’t have any specific stops, you need to wait by the road and flag one when you see it. In order to make sure that you get on one, try to not to leave too late – they usually don’t run anymore in the late afternoon. We caught one around 1 pm, but we’ve been told they should run up until 4 pm.

The cost of bemo from Pemuteran to Gilimanuk is 40k IDR per person.

– Take a ferry from Bali to East Java (Gilimanuk – Ketapang)

When you arrive in Gilimanuk you will easily find a ferry terminal which is located close to the bus station. From there you can take a ferry to Ketapang in East Java.

The ferry service is very frequent, it usually goes in 30 min intervals. The distance that it covers is very short, but for some reason, it spends a lot of time on the water. We took around 1-1,5h for the ferry ride.

Cost of a ferry ticket per person:  6,5 k IDR

– Transfer from the ferry terminal to the city center in Banyuwangi

In the East Java, you will arrive at the ferry terminal, which is located 15 km from the city center. You can take the bemo (the cheapest), train (takes 30 min) or taxi, which will pretend to be a bemo to the city center. We decided on the taxi as it was only 50k IDR for both of us and we didn’t want to try to look for real bemos.

Cost: 50k IDR for 2 people = 25k IDR per person

Where to stay in Banyuwangi near the Ijen volcano?

We stayed in Kampung Osing Inn  in a double room with breakfast. Nice, clean place, located out of the main street, which feels like you are in the small Indonesian village. People are very friendly and the food in the local eatery very cheap and very good.

Cost of accommodation: 130k IDR for 2 people = 65k IDR per person

#2 How to get to the base of Ijen hike

Initially, I didn’t want any guides or organized trips for climbing the Kawah Ijen. I only wanted to find a driver who could take us to the base of Ijen volcano and leave us alone, waiting for when we return. However, it turned out to be a bit more pricey than I expected.

There are several ways of getting to the base of Ijen volcano:

  • Motorbike – you can rent the motorbike and drive it yourself. However, with this option, you really need to know how to drive motorbike at night in the mountainous area. I wouldn’t recommend it.
  • Ojek – You can get a ride on a motorbike with someone else. It doesn’t really work if you’re two or more people. You also better check the driving skills of your guide as you will be traveling in the dark on the windy roads.
  • Car – you can get a driver or try with Grab (Asian version of Uber). For a car, you can get it for 600k  IDR per car both ways. For Uber/Grab you can get it for 400k, but you need a lot of bargaining and explaining.
  • Organized trip with a guide – prices vary between the companies.

If you are a bigger group, I would suggest you take a car with a driver and share a cost. Motorbikes might also be an option, but only if you are very experienced and you know the way. It’s dark and the road is not the best, with many jeeps going up the hill, so it might not the best experience for a novice.

Until the last minute, we didn’t know how we’re going to get to the bottom of the Ijen hike. Then, while we were walking around the town, we met the local guy who was organizing the trips to Ijen. He gave us the best price possible, so we went for it. If you don’t want to leave it like us for the last minute, you can book your trip in advance .

Our Kawah Ijen tour was departing at midnight from our hotel in Banyuwangi. It included the transport there and back, the guide (who was a former mine worker), gas mask, visit to the coffee plantations and waterfall.

Cost of Kawah Ijen tour: 175 000 IDK per person.

#3 Ijen volcano hike – get to the top of the crater

The timings of the ijen hike:.

  • The drive from Banyuwangi to Mount Ijen base takes around 1h 15min.
  • The normal start for the hike is around 2:30 or 3 am, but it depends on what time the gates will open this night, which might vary.
  • The hike to the top of the crater takes around 75 minutes and to go down to the Ijen crater and the acid lake takes 30 minutes more.
  • The sunrise is around 4 am in October. If you travel in a different month, you can check the exact sunrise time on the internet.

Unfortunately, you can’t really get to the Ijen national park earlier to avoid all the other people, as the park gates open at one time. On the board at the entrance, it said that the gates open at 1 am, but when we were there before 3 am we still needed to wait a bit (?).

You then walk in the darkness, trying to imagine what is around you.  The hike is not too difficult, a bit uphill but the ground is even. Halfway, you can make a short stop in a small hut, where you can buy additional water or snacks. And then the hike in the darkness continues.

It really depends on your luck for the weather. If the sky is clear and the moon is out, you might be able to see everything around. When we were doing the Ijen hike, everything was covered in the clouds and at one point it even started to rain slightly. I wasn’t really expecting to see anything once the sun is up. Luckily, this changed.

Cost of the entrance ticket to the Ijen National park: 150 000 IDR for foreigners. If you take the organized tour, it is normally included.

#4 Going down the Ijen crater & the Blue Flames

You must be thinking why have we decided to hike in the darkness and not to wait closer to the sunrise? The whole point of the night hike to the summit is to see the famous Blue Flames of Ijen volcano. The Blue Flames are the volcanic sulfur gases that escape from the mining pipes. The ignited gas then burns with a blue flame of a 600 degrees Celcius in a strong blue colour in the darkness. It’s a truly spectacular sight.

When we got to the top of the crater, it was still pitch black, that I didn’t even see the turn to go down the crater. That was where the presence of the guide was very useful. He was leading us to find the best way on the steep path, between the sharps rocks and navigating us in the darkness. Then, he found us the best spot on the side of the mountain inside the crater and told us to wait for the Blue Flames to appear.

The air was stuffy and it was hard to breathe. From time to time the gentle wind would blow a cloud of the sulfur gases in our direction and we would need to close our eyes and put the gas masks on. I’ve read before that you don’t necessarily need the gas mask there. That’s so   wrong . You definitely need it. You just might be lucky that the gases are not going your way on one particular day, but if they are, you won’t be able to breathe without the mask.  Luckily, when we were there the air was mainly still, so the sulfur cloud covered us maybe once or twice in the darkness. Later on, when it was already bright, it was easier to move around in order to avoid the cloud traveling in your direction.

The Blue Flames of Ijen were magnificent. We were watching them until the light came back and made them disappear.

#5 The sunrise in Ijen Crater and the acid lake

The disappearance of the Blue Flames didn’t make the Ijen crater less interesting.  Quite the opposite.

During the sunrise, the light crawled into the Ijen crater and lit up the surreal landscape. The biggest acidic lake in the world had a strong turquoise colour and was surrounded by the sharp walls of the volcanic crater with the bright yellow sulfur rocks lying around. The part of the crater was mystically hidden in the gases coming out of the sulfur pipes. It felt like on another planet.

#6 Meeting the Ijen volcano miners – the hardest job in the world

The Ijen volcano is not only worth a visit due to its picturesque lake or a nice hike to the crater. The main experience is the opportunity to meet the sulfur mine workers. It gives you the chance to better understand Indonesia as the country and even reflect on your own life and job, that you might be complaining about.

The workers in the sulfur mine have one of the hardest jobs in the world. Every day, they go down and up the crater to collect the pieces of sulfur, that then they sell. They often carry the load of around 90 kg on their backs, walking in rubber shoes or flip-flops in between the sharp rocks. But the biggest risk for the workers’ health are the toxic gases coming out of the volcano. Not many of the miners use any protection. This means that the exposure to the toxic gases severely reduces their life expectancy.

The miners’ pay is considered quite big for the local area, but it translates into around 10-12$ a day with usual 2 trips up and down. The cost of a pizza for the job, that most of us wouldn’t probably survive for one day.

Miners in Ijen crater

So maybe take the Kawah Ijen tour?

This one time, I was glad for the tourism industry to develop in the area of Ijen volcano.  Because we took the tour with the guide, we also could contribute to the local community and understand the hard lives of the miners.

Our guide was a former sulfur miner. He told us the terrifying stories of the mining job. Only thanks to his dedication and hard work, he managed to get out of the mine and became the guide instead. Now, he goes down the crater as a guide, which means that he doesn’t need to do it several times a day and without the heavy load. He is also provided with the gas mask by the tour company and he is much happier.

I asked him how it happened that he became the guide and where he learned English so well. His answer was “I taught myself in the breaks between carrying the sulfur up and down. I wanted to do it in order to be able to get out of here, but still be able to provide the income for my family.”

Some of the miners also sell the sulphuric souvenirs to earn extra cash. Even if you are not going to do anything with them, it’s probably good to buy some, at least to support them a little.

#7 How to travel from Ijen to Bromo volcano

If you come to Ijen volcano from Bali, now you can go another way and also visit Bromo volcano.  You can read more about hiking Mount Bromo on your own here .

To get to Bromo, first, you would need to take a train to Probolingo, that leaves from the main station in  Banyuwangi. The train ride takes around 2 hours. The morning trains can get fully booked, so it’s better to book in advance. You can easily book your train tickets online . We decided to take our time and rest a bit after the sleepless night, so we took the train in the afternoon.

The next step is to get from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang, which is a small town in the mountains, located at the base for Mount Bromo hike.  The journey from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang takes around 2h along the windy roads. Here you can read more about how to travel from Ijen to Bromo.

Kawah Ijen ridge

The extraordinary experience

The experience of climbing the Mount Ijen was one of the most unique things I’ve ever done. The landscape is beautiful, the whole hike feels very adventurous, but what really leaves the most impact is the connection with the miners.

The trip to the crater is not only an interesting hike to chase the beautiful views of the turquoise water, contrasting with yellow rocks and pink sunrise. It’s much more than that.  The opportunity to see the conditions of the job environment that some people need to work in will open your eyes to how privileged some of us are and that we should appreciate what we have.

I never made it to the top of the Ijen crater for the sunrise. For the whole length of our stay in the volcano, I was at the bottom of the Ijen crater, talking to and observing the miners, struck by this different and beautiful, yet dangerous world.

Know before you hike Ijen volcano in East Java

Is ijen hike safe.

Yes, provided that you follow the common rules for hiking and use the gas protection. Have proper shoes, follow your guide, use gas mask and glasses. However, because of the dangerous conditions at the bottom of the crater, if you have any medical conditions, especially connected to breathing, consult your doctor before going.

What to take for the Ijen hike?

Below are the necessary items that you need to have for your Ijen hike:

  • Gas mask – this type of mask is the best. If you don’t need it after the hike, leave it to the miners.
  • Goggles/glasses – I just used my normal sunglasses
  • Hiking shoes or sneakers
  • First aid kit  – you never know what might happen (like to me in Svalbard ), so better be safe
  • Torch – the best is a head torch , so you can keep your hands free
  • Old clothes (they will most likely smell like sulfur later on)
  • Some warm clothes – jumper, light waterproof jacket (for example packable rain jacket ) in case of rain, hat, gloves

How to photograph the Blue Flames?

Photographing the Blue Flames of Ijen is extremely hard and you need to either come very close to them or have good camera and tripod. Going close to the flames is not recommended, but some of the tour guides can do it for you. Our tour guide took our phones and got some good photos and videos.

All the photos, that you can see in this post, I took with my Fuji X-E1 mirrorless camera.  I used the lens with the low aperture and long exposure settings I can recommend Samyang 12 mm, F 2.0 lens,   which is great for landscapes and taking pictures in the low light. You also need to make sure that the camera is stable when you use longer exposures. That’s why the tripod is needed. I use light and portable Manfrotto tripod .

Wow, these photos are incredible and this is the most perfectly detailed guide ever. Well done! I’ve seen this place on television somewhere, but I’ve never seen the blue glow in the night like in your photos. It’s so surreal, it looks like the Aurora Borealis of sulphur. Clearly this place needs to be on my bucket list stat!

Yes, it’s very special and such an amazing place to visit!

Kawah Ijen is my dream place and I simply can’t wait to cross it off my bucket list, Aga. The scenery is so picturesque and perfect for hiking. Is Kawah Ijen also a good place for camping?

I guess you can maybe try to camp at the bottom of the mountain (NOT in the crater), but I wouldn’t recommend doing it closer to the crater because of the toxic gases, that can be blown in any direction.

Do you have the contact number of the guide you had for the tour? Many thanks

Hi, I do actually :) +6281234673002

The Kawah Ijen Crater Sunrise Hike | Volcano + Blue Flame

Midnight Wakeup. 2+ Hour Hike. Blue Flames. Gas Mask. Crater Sunrise. If that all sounds of interest to you then the Kawah Ijen Crater Sunrise Hike is the perfect add on to your Indonesian itinerary.

Trekking Ijen and experiencing that sunrise firsthand was one of the most unique travel experiences I have had and I am sure it will be something you enjoy too. This guide will go over how to take part of the hike yourself and what to expect along the way.

1) Kawah Ijen Hike Overview

  • Name : Kawah Ijen / Ijen Volcano / Gunung Ijen
  • Location : East Java, Indonesia
  • Closest Accommodation : Banyuwangi (1 Hour) or Bondowoso (2 Hours)
  • Hike Duration : ~4 Hours (with Blue Flame descent) / 3 Hours (without descent)
  • Length : ~7KM / 4.3 Miles Round Trip
  • Trail Type : Dirt
  • Cost : 100.000 IDR / $7 USD Weekday | 150.000 IDR / $11 USD Weekend
  • Difficulty : Intermediate
  • Must Need Accessory: Gas Mask

The Kawah Ijen Crater Hike starts in the parking lot and soon ascends at a nearly constant incline upwards for 2 hours until you reach to the crater rim sunrise viewing area.

Before you reach the viewing area though, you will have the option to hike down to the bottom of the crater to better see the famous blue flames.

Once finished with the blue flames, you can head back up to the crater rim and towards the sunrise viewing area.

2) What is Kawah Ijen

Kawah Ijen also known as the Ijen Volcano or Gunung Ijen, is a dormant volcano at the very end of the island of Java in Indonesia.

What makes it super unique though is that it houses the largest crater acidic lake in the world! Seeing this turquoise colored crater lake at sunrise will be one beautiful site to take in.

It also is known for its vast amount of sulphur that gets mined every day . As you make your way closer to the crater, you will begin to see the extremely hard working miners that dig up the sulphur and bring it up from the bottom of the crater and then all the way up to the rim and back down to the starting point.

Not only is it extremely dangerous for these miners to be working in hazardous conditions, but they also make a very minimal wage – around $10 per day.

Since there is sulphur gas making its way out of the crater, the air can be dangerous to breathe in. That is why it is extremely necessary to have a gas mask with you. These can be rented in the parking lot or if you have a guide, they will provide for you.

As you get closer to the crater itself, you will see the famous electric blue flames lighting up the dark night .

These flames are created due to the combustion of the sulfuric gasses, and when these gasses come into contact with the outside air through the cracks of the volcano, the blue flames are created.

Note though that these blue flames are not always seen, so don’t get too disappointed – the sunrise is still worth it!

3) Where is Ijen Volcano

The Ijen Volcano is located on the far east end of the island of Java. It is the last major volcano on the east end of the island before moving on to Bali.

The two closest major cities to Ijen would be Banyuwangi (1 Hour) or Bondowoso (2 Hours), depending on where you are coming from beforehand and where you are planning on heading next.

See below for a map view with Ijen pin pointed down along with the two routes from Banyuwangi and Bondowoso.

4) Where to Stay in Banyuwangi and Bondowoso

Speaking of Banyuwangi and Bondowoso, I wanted to list out a few highly recommended and well priced options to choose from when deciding where to stay when visiting Ijen.

Since you will most likely just be staying the night, you don’t need to worry too much about many amenities you may want during a longer stay. Below are some solid options to choose from though:

  • 1) Ketapang Indah Hotel
  • 2) Aston Banyuwangi Hotel
  • 3) Banana Homestay
  • 4) Hotel Blambangan
  • 5) Banyu Homestay
  • 1) Grand Padis Hotel
  • 2) Ijen Bondowoso Home Stay

Another option here is to stay at Arabica Homestay . Although the not highest rated of places to stay, it is mere minutes away from the Ijen parking lot. By staying at Arabica, you will be able to sleep in a bit longer and not set that alarm for 12AM.

5) How to Get to Ijen

There are three main ways to go about getting to Ijen – private driver, on your own, or by tour.

Private Driver

Since I was with a couple other people at the time, we opted to go with a private driver to get us from Banyuwangi to Ijen.

You can assume the cost of a private driver to take you there, wait for you to complete the hike, and then take you to your next destination to be around $50 USD (although this will also depend where you are going next).

On Your Own

Your second option here is to hire your own scooter or car during your time on Java. This will come at a cheaper cost – just $5 – $10 per day, however you will need to be super confident managing the roads on your own.

Not only will you need to deal with the Indonesian roads, but you will also need to do so at night. Please do not opt for this unless you are 100% comfortable and able to do so.

The last option I wanted to list out was doing Ijen with a tour. By signing up for a tour you will not need to worry about logistics altogether.

You simply will be picked up at a certain time from your hotel, be brought to Ijen, guided up and down the volcano and then be brought back (or potentially onwards to your next destination).

If that sounds up your alley, then a fully organized tour is for you. Below are some solid options that can leave from Banyuwangi or even Bali:

  • Mount Ijen Volcanic Crater Overnight Trip from Bali
  • From Bali or Banyuwangi: Ijen Crater Sunrise Hike
  • 3-Day Excursion to Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater from Bali

6) Guide or No Guide

If you are either taking your own private driver to Ijen or you are planning on heading there on your own, you will need to decide whether or not you will want to hire a guide to take you up and down the volcano (a tour option will have one included already for you).

For a trek like this, I do not think it is completely necessary to hire a guide due to the pretty obvious path to follow all the way to the sunrise viewing area.

A guide will come in handy though when it comes to knowing when to put on your gas mask and also can be very helpful as you make your way down and up into the crater.

A guide can either be arranged ahead of time by your driver (as he did for my group) or you can simply hire one once you arrive there. Expect to pay around 300.000 IDR / $22 USD for a guide (which can be split among your group).

7) What to Bring

This is more of a unique hike to take part of since you are both hiking in the dark on the way up and dealing with toxic gasses.

To solve those two issues, you will want to have a gas mask (either given to you by a guide or rented in the parking lot) and also a headlamp (my go to is the Foxelli Headlamp ).

On top of those two items, you can check out this hiking packing list:

Hiking Packing List In general when it comes to hiking, there are a few main aspects to consider. These includes clothing layers, hiking shoes, hydration & fuel, electronics, and other essentials. Below in a breakdown of some of the top items, but be sure to check out the Hiking Packing List for a more comprehensive view. Clothing Layers Layering is going to be a top consideration when hiking. You will want to be prepared for all sorts of weather so you can be comfortable in different situations. Some items may include: → Hiking Shorts → Hiking Pants → Short Sleeve Shirt → Long Sleeve Shirt / Sun Hoodie → Mid Layer Fleece → Puff Jacket (not always needed) → Packable Rain Jacket ( Columbia Watertight II ) Note that your layers should be made of moisture wicking material as they are breathable and quick drying. Footwear Having appropriate footwear will also be very important. You will want to have shoes with the necessary grip and support to keep you safe on the trail. → Hiking Shoes ( Keen Targhee ) → Hiking Socks ( Darn Tough ) Other Essentials Whether it is hiking gear, electronics, or just some miscellaneous items, here are some other essentials to bring along on hikes. → Hiking Backpack ( Osprey Talon 22 ) & Rain Cover ( Joy Walker Cover ) → Hiking Poles ( Black Diamond Trekking Poles ) → Water Bottle ( CamelBak Chute or Katadyn Filter Bottle ) → Portable Charger ( Anker PowerCore 5000mAh ) → Action Camera ( GoPro Hero ) → Energy Bars & Snacks → Hat & Sunglasses → Sunscreen & Bug Spray

8) Ijen Itinerary Overview

See below for a high level layout of what to expect during a morning hiking the Ijen Crater for sunrise.

Assume a 5:30AM sunrise for the below and leaving from Banyuwangi (note sunrise will always be somewhere between 5AM – 6AM depending on time of year).

  • 12:00AM | Wake Up!
  • 12:30AM | Drive to Ijen
  • 2:00AM | Begin Hike
  • 3:15AM | Hike Down & Up Crater for Blue Flame (optional)*
  • 4:00AM | Continue to Sunrise Viewing Area
  • 4:30AM | Arrive at Sunrise Viewing Area
  • 5:00AM – 6:00AM | Enjoy Sunrise & Crater Views**
  • 6:00AM | Hike Down Ijen
  • 7:30AM | Depart

*You can sleep in a bit more if you decide not to head down the crater

**Feel free to stay past sunrise as well to take in some more views from other angles along the crater rim. You can continue walking a good portion of it before it gets a bit sketchy.

9) Kawah Ijen Crater Sunrise Hike

Now that you have a better idea of how to prepare for the hike lets talk a bit more about what to expect on the hike itself.

A) Parking Lot to Crater Rim

The first 1-1.5 hours of the hike will take you from the parking lot of Kawah Ijen and take you right up alongside the crater rim of the volcano. Since this is a sunrise hike, you will not be able to take in the scenery around you too much.

Instead, you will be trekking up in the darkness as you head up on the near constant incline towards the crater. While the hike is uphill to the crater, it is not too steep. Rather, it is just on a moderate incline along the packed dirt path.

Below you will find some pictures that I took on the way down (since it was lighter outside).

Ijen Volcano Parking

B) Hike Down / Up Crater

Once you arrive on top of the crater, the path will begin to flatten out a bit. Just another 15 minutes away you will have the option to hike down into the crater to get a better view of the blue flames.

Now is also the time to put on those gas masks (if you have not already done so), as the sulfur gasses are at their strongest.

The hike down and up the crater will take somewhere around 45-60 minutes but that will also depend on how crowded the path is. Since it will be in the dark and the path is rocky/uneven, you will also want to take it slower than usual.

As you are making your way down to the bottom you may pass by some sulfur miners until you reach a viewpoint where you can better see the blue flames.

Unfortunately, the blue flames will not always be nice and bright to see (and sometimes you won’t be able to see them at all).

When I visited, they were not strong at all and I couldn’t even get a picture in the dark. If you would like to see what they look like, check out some Google images of the Ijen Blue Flames .

Sulfur Gas Ijen

C) Ijen Volcano Sunrise

After taking in the blue flames from below, head back up and around the crater rim to the sunrise viewing area. Depending on what time you set off and how quick you made your way up the crater, you may need to wait a bit until the sun begins to rise.

When it does rise though, you will start to see the volcano’s surroundings begin to light up. On one side (towards the sun) you will see the vast landscape around Ijen, and right behind you will be the Ijen crater itself.

As it gets brighter and brighter you will begin to see the turquoise crater lake, sulfur fumes, and the entirety of Ijen come into view. Getting those views in were some of the best I could ask for.

Ijen Sunrise

After enjoying sunrise for a bit, feel free to walk a bit more around the crater rim of Ijen. You can continue counter clockwise as you take in additional views of the lake and crater rim.

Do be careful though as it can get a bit more dangerous as you continue along. You can then head back towards the sunrise viewing area for one last view of Ijen.

Once all done taking in a Kawah Ijen sunrise it is time to make your way back down to the parking lot. It should be much easier and quicker now that it is downhill and no longer in the dark.

Ijen Volcano Clouds

10) Where to Next

After completing Ijen it is time to head off to your next destination. That means you are either headed to Bali or you are continuing on in Java.

If you are headed to Bali, you will need to make your way back to Banyuwangi (by private driver, tour, or your own wheels) and catch the quick ferry that will take you to the Bali mainland.

If you are continuing on in Java, you will most likely be heading to the Mount Bromo area right after.

To get there, you can continue on with your private driver, drive on your own, or if you opted for a tour of Ijen – head back to Banyuwangi and then continue to Bromo from there (train/bus to Probolinggo and then minibus to Cemoro Lawang).

Feel free to check out the Hiking Mount Bromo Guide for more!
