Tanzania

Tanzania safari

In Kilimanjaro's footprint, Tanzania mesmerizes with the great wildebeest migration and vast wildlife parks – a thrilling country for unforgettable safaris.

Tanzania

“We are seasoned off-the-beaten-track travellers and I marvel that everything worked exactly as it was supposed to”, wrote a recent traveller of his Expert Africa safari. “Here we were, in the middle of central Tanzania, waiting for a 10:05 flight. Guess what? At 10:03, there was the plane, buzzing animals off the grass runway, then touching down to pick us up. It happened every time. Dazzling!” The same traveller went on to describe visceral wildlife encounters: “Having a leopard on your tent porch is not something I will soon forget. This is not Disneyland.” Not Disneyland could be Tanzania’s national motto. “We had to keep pinching ourselves” wrote a first-time visitor, “that we were actually there, in the places we had only read about or seen on TV.” Tanzania makes a sensational impact. Over one-third of this expansive land is dedicated to safeguarding its diverse array of wildlife: an irresistible draw for the adventurous. A journey through Tanzania’s treasure trove of biodiversity can takes you through a medley of landscapes – from sweeping grasslands to dense tropical forests, from vibrant coral reefs to the sprawling Serengeti , a fortress for Africa's ‘big five’. Watch in awe as large herds of elephants stir clouds of dust in Ruaha National Park , hippos frolic in the rapids of the Rufiji River and chimpanzees play in the lofty domains of the Mahale Mountains . Underpinning this vivid tapestry of wildlife lie some of the world’s greatest geological splendours: the Great Rift Valley, the Ngorongoro Crater , the iconic Serengeti plains , all of which play a crucial role in shaping Tanzania’s diverse ecosystems. Tanzania’s tropical coast, sun-dappled beaches and scattering of islands are equally fascinating. Here cosmopolitan towns date back centuries to early trade routes and secluded Indian Ocean islands lie surrounded by white-sand beaches and colourful coral reefs. “Our eyes were wide with wonder from the moment we left the airstrip,” sighed a couple returning to Tanzania for the first time since their honeymoon 30 years earlier: “We had the most mind-blowing, amazing experience.”

Tanzania’s top safari & holiday destinations

Tanzania’s safari and beach areas fall naturally into four broad groups.

Tanzania's ‘Northern Circuit’ is the term which defines the areas of the sprawling Serengeti , the stunning landscape of the Ngorongoro Crater , Tarangire and Lake Manyara national parks – the most famous safaris areas in Tanzania.

For a quieter experience, Tanzania’s southern parks offer unspoiled wilderness areas dotted with a smaller number of safari camps. The lakes and waterways of Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) offer magical boating safaris, while Ruaha ’s rugged terrain is excellent for walking safaris is home to a very strong population of lions.

Nearer to Africa’s heart, Western Tanzania is harder to reach, so few visitors come, but two parks are amazing. Katavi National Park protects a vast plain: the battleground for buffalo and lion, whilst an hour’s flight away, the spectacular Mahale Mountains rise sheer from the shores of Lake Tanganyika – providing probably the best place to track wild chimpanzees in Africa.

Lush and tropical, Tanzania’s coast & Islands are the venue for simple beach retreats to luxurious lodges – with the odd private island included.

When to go on a Tanzania safari

In recent years, Tanzania’s climate has become less predictable, but historically a broad-brush view of the seasons here has been:

July to October, the ‘ peak season ’, usually sees warm and dry days, with high game concentrations around water sources, including the famously spectacular river crossings of wildebeest in the northern Serengeti.

During November and December, the ‘ short rains ’, wildlife sightings remain plentiful, but expect sporadic showers. Migratory birds arrive as residents don breeding plumage and prices reduce from peak levels.

Tanzania’s ‘ short dry season ’, January to mid-March, can be hot and humid, particularly at the coast. The wildlife is generally scattered. In the Serengeti, the wildebeest are calving across the short-grass plains of the south.

The frequent downpours of the ‘ long rains ’ last from about mid-March to early June. Some safari camps close, but lower prices and fewer visitors do attract the cognoscenti.

Click on the months below for more detail, see Tanzania’s historical climate data and talk to us about recent variations!

Tanzania in January

January usually marks the start of the short dry season, although the exact timings of this are a little unpredictable. You can expect clear blue skies and sunshine, if the short rains have stopped, and the temperatures will be building. The short dry season is a little less pronounced in Southern Tanzania, and so it can still be wet in these areas. It is an interesting time for avians as resident birds go into breeding plumage and migrant species can be present. Once the New Year busy period has quietened down, January can offer great value and quieter parks, although the weather can be variable, and in the Selous and Ruaha the wildlife is more dispersed.

  • Variable weather: clear & dry or cloudy with some rain.
  • Occasional thunderstorms may occur.
  • A good time of year for birding as and many migrant species are around
  • The wildebeest migration is gathering in the southern Serengeti.
  • Busy in early January, quietening down through the month.

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in January

Tanzania in February

February is during the short dry season and is one of the hottest months in Tanzania, with temperatures reaching around 33°Celsius. This can be a good time to visit, as some areas of the Northern Circuit are comparatively quieter than during the European summer months, and lodge rates are also a little lower. The wildebeest will typically be on the southern plains of the Serengeti for their calving season, which tends to occur in a 2-3 week window in early-mid February – although this does vary year on year. This is also a particularly rewarding time for birdlife, as northern hemisphere migrants join the resident species.

  • Hot and dry weather.
  • Wildebeest migration calving on Serengeti’s southern plains.
  • Ngorongoro Crater and southern Serengeti busy for the migration.
  • Selous and Ruaha are typically quiet at this time.
  • The parks are likely to be lush and green, leading to pretty landscape

A very good time to visit

Weather in February

Tanzania in March

The heavier ‘long rains’ start in earnest in March although exactly when varies year on year. With no need to stay close to permanent water sources, migratory wildlife disperses, and so game viewing starts to become more challenging. This is most prominently seen in Tarangire National Park. The wildebeest migration may still be calving, or have moved on into the central regions of the Serengeti. Many of the camps in the southern parks close mid March and mobile tented camps in the Serengeti will wind down towards the end of the month in order to move location or carry out refurbishments, ready for the new tourist season.

  • Hot with building humidity, before the rains begin at some point.
  • Wildlife viewing is variable depending on the start of the rains.
  • Parks are quiet and rates are low.
  • Not great for southern or western Tanzania.
  • March can be a good time for birding, with many migrant species.

Weather in March

Tanzania in April

April is in the middle of the long rainy season and is the wettest month, with on average 250mm of rain. Temperatures are fairly high and humid in comparison to the rest of the year. Expect the bush to be lush and flowering, and alive with insects, birds and smaller animals. It is however also dense, allowing wildlife to hide, which in turn makes game viewing harder. This is a very quiet time in terms of visitor numbers. Many of the tented camps are closed in April, however the larger lodges remain open. The rates are significantly cheaper, and so if you are willing to work harder to spot the bigger game, some accommodation bargains can be had.

  • Heavy rain expected, with impressive thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Many camps closed and roads impassable due to ground conditions.
  • Rates are at their lowest all year round, with very few other tourists
  • Places that are open are green and vibrant, wildlife more dispersed.

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in April

Tanzania in May

As Tanzania is close to the equator there is no dramatic difference in climate throughout the year, but temperatures do start to drop a little in May. The rains are likely to still be present, although potentially clearing towards the end of the month. Visitor numbers and lodge rates are still low. The wildebeest migration is making its way through the western regions of the Serengeti, crossing the Grumeti River. Virtually all camps in southern Tanzania remain closed, and many of the roads and tracks in the Selous become impassable.

  • Heavy rains and storms are likely, this can create some dramatic skies
  • Blissfully quiet in northern Tanzania, and a good time to avoid crowds
  • The parks are likely to look lush and green, with long grass.
  • Wildlife is likely to be more dispersed, with fewer sightings.
  • The low prices make safaris much more affordable at this time.

Weather in May

Tanzania in June

The rains come to an end at some point during the month and migratory wildlife begins to be drawn back to perennial water sources as the land starts to dry up. It’s likely that the parks will still be quite green and the grass high though, so walking and fly-camping may be unlikely. This marks the start of the season with camps reopening, but prices are still more affordable than the subsequent months. The migration may still be in the Western Corridor, or on the move northwards towards the Mara River. Western Tanzania presents more challenging conditions for chimpanzee trekking in Mahale National Park, as the chimps are higher in the mountains.

  • A transitory time for the migration – moving from west to north.
  • The parks may still be quite green, and grasses high.
  • Wildlife may be dispersed still.
  • Relatively low visitor numbers and good value, shoulder season prices.

Weather in June

Tanzania in July

July is considered to be the start of the peak season, with no rainfall expected and pleasant daytime temperatures. As the parks dry, the wildlife congregates in fewer areas, grass is eaten and trampled by the migration, and game viewing gets better and better. The wildebeest are typically arriving in the northern Serengeti, ready to begin their period of crossings of the Mara River. In the Selous and Ruaha wildlife sightings can be fantastic, with animals gathering around the lakes and rivers. Great conditions and school holidays mean the parks are at their busiest, with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti particularly crowded.

  • Dry and warm daytimes, chilly and windy in the mornings and evenings.
  • Great wildlife viewing, as water sources diminish.
  • The most popular time of year with very high visitor numbers.
  • Prices are at their highest due to the great conditions on the ground.
  • To avoid the crowds consider Tanzania’s southern parks.

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in July

Tanzania in August

August is the middle of the long dry season, with clear skies and sunny weather. You can expect some cooler weather at night and first thing in the morning. Remember to pack layered clothing, so you can wrap up warm on your early morning game drives, but remain comfortable as it heats up throughout the day. August is a very popular time to visit, so accommodation prices are at their highest and advanced booking is necessary. It can get noticeably busier in some of the northern parks – in particular the Ngorongoro Crater and northern Serengeti, as visitors flock to the area in hope of witnessing an exciting migration river crossing.

  • Dry and warm daytimes, chilly in the early mornings and evenings.
  • General wildlife viewing should be excellent.
  • An exciting time of year for the wildebeest migration.
  • Certain areas will be very busy and camps fill up fast.
  • Great wildlife sightings in the Selous and Ruaha, and fewer people.

Weather in August

Tanzania in September

September can be an excellent time of year to visit Tanzania. As the parks continue to dry up the wildlife becomes increasingly reliant on the remaining water sources, leading to high densities of animals. Whilst early September can be busy, with fewer families traveling at this time the parks typically become quieter as the month goes on. You are still likely to see the wildebeest migration in the northern Serengeti, with river crossings occurring on a regular basis. Tanzania’s southern parks are also fantastic at this time of year, generally receiving far fewer visitors than the north, and wildlife sightings can be great. Prices remain high and the weather generally remains good.

  • Wildlife viewing in September can be fantastic.
  • Whilst still fairly busy, often the parks are typically a little quiet
  • The parks will start to become very dry, with little new vegetation
  • Cooler mornings and evenings, warming up during the day.
  • Prices remain high.

Weather in September

Tanzania in October

At the tail end of the dry season, the wildlife should be the easiest to spot, although photographers should be aware that it can be a bit dusty at this time of year, as there has been no rain for several months. Great general wildlife viewing throughout as animals are attracted to remaining sources of water. Elephant numbers are particularly high at this time in Tarangire, and Mahale and Katavi are especially rewarding with frequent wildlife sightings close to camp. There is a chance of rainfall towards the end of the month, if the short rains commence. While prices remain high, visitors numbers are significantly lower than in July-August.

  • Mostly dry and temperatures comfortably warm, with the chance of storm
  • Great game viewing although the landscape can be a bit barren.
  • Much lower visitor numbers than the earlier months.

Weather in October

Tanzania in November

In November you can expect the start of the short rains, although the start date varies every year. The rains are highly localised, and are much lighter and more unpredictable than the long rains that occur earlier in the year. These should not really interfere with your safari – as the game viewing at this time is still good - but you should pack a waterproof jacket and be prepared for some short rain showers! The majority of tented camps remain open, but some of the mobile camps in Northern Tanzania will close for the latter half on the month. Given the seasonality, camps are charging shoulder season rates so there are often some bargains to be had. Early November can offer great value for money and the weather conditions are likely to be comparable to late October.

  • Parks are comparatively quiet and prices at the lower end.
  • Some camps will close towards the end of the month for maintenance.
  • Good wildlife sightings, but animals will disperse when rain starts
  • The wildebeest migration is on the move and the location unpredictable

Weather in November

Tanzania in December

December is also during the short rainy period, but this does not stop Tanzania being a popular destination to spend the festive period. Be aware that many of the lodges book up early, and charge peak rates over this time. Advanced booking is essential over this period, especially if travelling in larger family groups. Travelling in December outside of the festive period allows travellers to make use of excellent shoulder season rates. Temperatures are pleasant with the averages of 27Celsius, although there is the chance of intermittent thunderstorms.

  • Variable weather:clear & dry or cloudy with some rain and thunderstorm
  • Good general game viewing in parks with low seasonality - Serengeti.
  • Very quiet early in the month, becoming exceptionally busy.
  • Prices reflect this – great value rising to the highest they are.
  • The wildlife in southern Tanzania is more dispersed.

Maps of the main regions for a Tanzania safari

Two different maps can help you to understand Tanzania:The GOOGLE MAP shows Tanzania's remarkable landscape, spanning 900,000km2 from vast grasslands to its extensive coastline, whilst our REFERENCE MAP clearly outlines the national parks.

In northern Tanzania , the remarkable wildlife sanctuary of the Ngorongoro Crater rises beside a huge crack in the earth’s crust, the Rift Valley Escarpment, which splits the landscape and bounds the soda-lakes of Lake Manyara and Lake Natron . Nearby, at Olduvai Gorge , the same geology protects some of the earliest hominin fossils ever discovered.

Southern Tanzania ’s two main parks are far apart. The flat Nyerere National Park , dominated by many waterways of the mighty Rufiji River, contrasts with the huge, rolling plateau of Ruaha National Park .

More remote still, in western Tanzania , lie the plains of Katavi National Park and the mountainous sloes of the tropical forests in Mahale Mountains , on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Off Tanzania’s tropical Indian Ocean coastline lie the ‘spice islands’ of Zanzibar and Pemba ; the laid-back Mafia Island , and many tiny satellites, like the private islands of Fanjove , Chumbe and Mnemba .

A Complete Guide to Safari in Tanzania

By Author Christian L.

Posted on Published: October 25, 2020  - Last updated: November 14, 2022

Categories Destinations , Africa , Tanzania

One of the most breathtaking and awe-inspiring trips I’ve taken in recent years was to Tanzania in 2019.

It is a lifelong dream for many to witness African wildlife on a safari, and my experience didn’t disappoint! It truly is a bucket-list experience, to be a guest in their wild habitat.

Elphants in Tanzania

The black and white striped zebras, the giant elephants and hippos, the fuzzy and wild hyenas, and my personal favourite – cheetahs.

From the wild animals to the bright culture to the friendly people, Tanzania is not a country I’ll soon forget.

There are plenty of parks to explore within Tanzania’s borders, but none are so well known as the famous Serengeti National Park.

Read on for a complete guide to beautiful Tanzania’s Serengeti and surrounding National Park areas.

If planning a safari to anywhere in the world, so is there some words you need to know for your next safari

The Best Time to Visit Tanzania

Tanzania is a beautiful country year-round. The climate is naturally warm for the most part, but there are certain factors to be aware of when planning your visit.

The Dry Season In Tanzania runs from April to October, and the Wet Season runs from November to March.

Tanzania is one of the 16 best countries to visit in Africa.

Located in the southern hemisphere, months often thought of as “summer” will now be considered “winter”.

My trip in July was quite warm and even hot in the lower elevations but did get very cold overnight in the higher elevations. All of the parks in Tanzania can be visited during both seasons.

However, it would be best if you didn’t plan your vacation to Tanzania based only on the weather.

Other factors to consider are 1) the Great Migration pattern of the wildebeest, if this is something that you care to see; 2) the parks are typically more crowded during the dry season, so the wet season is a great time to avoid other tourists; and 3) if you are planning to go on a Camping Safari in the Serengeti as I did, it might be wise to lean toward the dry season.

Top Three National Parks to See in Tanzania

Serengeti national park.

First and most famous is the vast Serengeti National Park. The Maasai tribe, who still live in the area to this day, named the park Serengeti, which means “endless plains”. And that is precisely what you will see; tall grassy plains that stretch on forever. However, the Serengeti’s terrain varies greatly between these vast plains and rocky outcrops to volcanic lands, rivers, and forests.

Tanzania Giraffe

Established in 1951, this large park hosts one of the most diverse collections of animals in the country. Zebra, wildebeest, elephant , hippo, lion, leopard, and cheetah are just the beginning. Varied birdlife is also a draw for many.

The Great Migration can be viewed in the Serengeti, typically starting in July and August, as the wildebeest head north toward Kenya. This is one of the most popular sights in the park, and I can attest that it is worth the trek. Besides wildlife viewing, the park offers burning red sunrise views, hot air balloon rides, and presentations by researchers held in the Serengeti Wildlife Research Centre.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is believed to have been formed over 2.5 million years ago. It was a large, active volcano that erupted and eventually collapsed inward, forming the vast depression in the land that we see today. The tall, unbroken walls have formed a natural border, allowing life to thrive in the volcanic soil over the years.

The crater is easily accessed by vehicle and showcases an incredible number of animals in such a small area. This is where I saw two rhinos, completing my quest to see the Big Five.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is named after the Tarangire River, which is the animal’s only source of water in the region during the dry season. Tarangire is widely known for hosting hundreds of bird species, like flamingos, as well as tall and impressive baobab trees. Hundreds of lions and elephants also live in Tarangire.

The best time to view wildlife in Tarangire National Park is between June and October when large herds migrate into and through the park. This is also the dry season in Tarangire National Park.

Another amazing country in Africa to go on safari in is Namibia and Etosha National Park .

Things to Know Before Going On A Tanzania Safari

Safaris in Tanzania run the gamut of rustic to ultra-luxurious. Most lodges are not for the faint of heart (or budget). Luckily, tour operators run a wide range of options in terms of accommodation and cost.

Though I’m a seasoned solo-traveller, I do strongly recommend hiring a knowledgeable guide for safari. They are well-trained on where each type of animal likes to roam.

Eastern Africa is quite a trek from many regions, and you don’t want to waste your time by trying to go it alone. There is a daily fee in Serengeti for every traveller, so self-driving will not save you very much anyway. Most importantly, you also run the risk of missing animal sightings.

meerkats in Tanzania

Many safaris combine several different parks into the itinerary, and safari lengths range from 2 days to 2 weeks, or even longer. I would not recommend anything under four days, particularly if you need to reach the farther regions for the Great Migration viewing.

Below are some top tips to know before you fly to Tanzania as well as tips to help you navigate your experience on the ground.

Before You Go:

Check Tanzania Visa requirements based on your nationality. Many countries are able to obtain a visa-on-arrival, though the rules can change at any time. I was able to get my visa on arrival at Dar Es Salaam airport, though the process was crowded and only somewhat organized. It was easy enough; it just took a long time.

If you have travelled to Tanzania through a country where Yellow Fever exists, you will need proof of a Yellow Fever vaccination.

Decide on the time of year you want to visit. The easiest way to do this is to decide if you want to see the Great Migration or not.

Read all safari details before booking. Different seasons bring different prices, so double-check the listings. The total price will usually include all accommodations, meals, and entrance fees, no matter what “level” of luxury you choose.

Know that most safaris will depart from Arusha. If you fly into Tanzania, you will likely fly into Dar Es Salaam or Kilimanjaro. Arusha can be reached by bus or flight if flying into DAR. I was able to purchase the domestic flights for under USD 100.

Be very aware of baggage weight limits; there are strict domestic rules that could cost you extra money on the spot. Plus, you don’t need much luggage on safari anyway.

Most safari drivers recommend soft-sided luggage or duffel bags. They are easier to pack into tight quarters in the safari vehicles, and less likely to get damaged.

A comfortable wardrobe is key. On a traditional safari, you will spend most of your time in the vehicle, driving and viewing animals at each destination. Think yoga pants, trekking sandals, muted colours, and lots of layers. As mentioned previously, you will likely go through many different elevations, and some of them get quite chilly.

Avoid black and dark blue. These colours tend to attract disease-carrying tsetse flies.

Make sure you bring sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses and hats year-round. You will thank me for this. Ladies, hair ties and hats are a must if you have long hair. The top of the car is perpetually open, and your hair will be blowing around and in your face.

Bring an external battery and the correct cords for cameras and cell phones. There is usually one plug in the safari car, but with the ride being super bumpy, I noticed them falling out frequently. I was glad to have my battery packs!

A beautiful sunset in Tanzania

After Your Safari

No matter how long your safari lasts, plan to spend additional time in Tanzania once you finish. The culture is so vibrant and alive! And while seeing the animals is a once in a lifetime type of memory, you won’t get much of a feel for the country or its people inside the parks.

Below are a few unforgettable add-ons and stops for your trip.

Dar Es Salaam

This is the capital of Tanzania and is a lively place to spend some time. While walking around my guesthouse, I discovered a nearby food market with the most delicious street foods and pieces of bread, as well as clothing markets and fruit and vegetable stalls. It was crowded, alive, and smelled delicious everywhere.

Dar Es Salaam local market in Tanzania

Mount Kilimanjaro

If one bucket-list item is just not enough for your time in Tanzania, you can also add on a trek to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Routes varied from 8 days or more, purposefully leaving time to adjust to altitude sickness. A guide and porter is required; you cannot climb the mountain solo. “Kili” as it’s known, is the largest mountain on the entire continent. As you ascend, the jagged rocks are covered in ice no matter what time of year you climb.

Note that there are waterfalls and museums nearby, so even if you are not up for climbing, you can still visit and see Mount Kilimanjaro from the base.

In my opinion, Zanzibar is the best way to end a Tanzania trip. Located a short ferry ride from the mainland, Zanzibar offers beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters to refresh you after trekking through the wildlands.

The northern end of the island is the most popular area due to its picturesque stretches of white sand.

The east is where you’ll find more locals, and when the tide goes out, you can walk for ages in ankle-deep waters. Starfish and tiny fishes are visible in the shallow seawater.

Stonetown is where you will learn about the history of the island, which is at times dark but very important. Zanzibar was one of the highlights of my trip, so I highly recommend a stop here.

And there you have it! Take my advice, and you will be well on your way to a perfect Tanzania safari and vacation. Enjoy your trip; it is sure to be unforgettable!

Tanzania Wildlife

Tanzania offers great opportunities to view the Big Five roaming the savannah plains, it is not uncommon to see cheetah prowling, gazelle grazing, herds of elephant wandering, lions resting atop kopjes and leopard lazing or climbing trees.

Wildlife in the North vs the South

The principal northern and southern wildlife regions cover a vast range of destinations, each of which has its own unique wildlife and ecosystems.

The southern region offers more remote and unspoiled safari terrain and is much less frequented, whilst the northern circuit is busier but still has some great wildlife. The Southern Circuit includes the Selous Game Reserve and is one of the few areas you can explore on foot, offering the chance to view wild dogs, wildebeest, hippos, over 70,000 elephants, zebra and predators in their natural habitat. In the wilds of the west, Katavi is one of the least visited parks yet boasts some of the largest populations of crocodiles and hippos, while lion and leopard feed from the huge herds of herbivores.

In the north, the likelihood of spotting Big Five game, crocodiles, hippo, zebra and giraffe is strong in the renowned National Parks of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire.

The Serengeti is perfect for the quintessential landscapes of Africa; golden plains that teem with life of the numerous resident animals that one associates with Africa. Here you can also find the Great Migration for a majority of the year, where millions of wildebeest traverse the plains with predators such as lions, leopards, hyenas and crocodiles in hot pursuit.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking volcanic caldera that contains its own unique ecosystem and this animal sanctuary literally throngs with a staggering variety of wildlife, including buffalo, wildebeest, endangered black rhino, Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, elephant and lions.

Tanzania is famous for the annual wildebeest migration, where over a million wildebeests, along with thousands of zebras and gazelles, migrate from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara in Kenya. Visitors to Tanzania can witness this incredible spectacle in several national parks, including Serengeti National Park.

The Serengeti is home to the largest population of cheetahs in the world, an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 live there. They have adapted to the open plains and grasslands where they use incredible speed to chase their prey and their distinctive spotted coats help them blend in with the savannah. They face competition from predators such as lions and hyenas. The Serengeti Cheetah Project (SCP) tracks the population and has a database of all cheetah encounters in the Serengeti plains since 1975 and this information is vital to what we know about wild cheetahs.

Chimpanzees

In the stunningly beautiful areas of Mahale and Gombe, the rainforest-clad slopes are home to some of the oldest habituated chimpanzee troops in Africa. Trekking through the forests to track these familiar-looking distant relatives is one of the highlights of a wildlife holiday in Tanzania and can range between 1 to 4 hours, awaiting the upshot of a monkey hunt or the pant hoots of their frenetic communication is worth the tiring trek.

The Masai Giraffe

The national animal of Tanzania, also known as the Kilimanjaro Giraffe, is the largest subspecies of giraffe and one of the most easily recognisable animals. Using their long tongues to reach between thorns, they will find and eat large amounts of leaves, flowers, fruits and twigs, feeding for 16-20 hours each day. They can be found in several national parks such as Serengeti National Park, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara National Park.

Tanzania Birdlife

Tanzania is famous for its national parks and conservation areas like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and the various parks in the Eastern Arc Mountains, which provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching. The country is home to over 1,100 bird species, making it one of Africa's premier birdwatching destinations. Whether you're a seasoned birder or a novice, Tanzania offers a wide range of avian biodiversity to explore and appreciate.

Some highlights include the Secretary Bird - a striking and unmistakable bird of prey known for its long legs and crest of quills, often found in savannas. The superb starling is known for its iridescent plumage and is found in savanna and woodland areas and the grey-crowned crane has a crown of golden feathers, often seen in grasslands and wetlands. You can find the yellow-billed stork wading through the rivers or wetlands with a distinctive yellow bill, and th iconic bird of prey the African Fish Eagle is often seen near lakes and rivers, where it hunts for fish.

Explore the Wonders of Tanzania: A Premier Safari Destination

Tanzania is one of the most diverse and famed safari destinations we currently offer. A country that is home to a lifetime’s worth of off-the-beaten-track adventures and countless bucket-list safari destinations alike.

Whichever you prefer – and let’s be honest, why not just choose both – Tanzania covers every possible holiday dream with plenty to spare.

Why Choose Tanzania for Your Safari Adventure?

Home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar Island, and the world’s largest annual wildebeest migration , Tanzania needs little introduction as one of the biggest draws, not only in East Africa but anywhere on the continent

It is on most first-time safari travellers’ lists for good reason; it is quite simply breathtaking and offers something for everyone, regardless of age or preferences – a perfect place for safari tours.

There is, however, much more to be discovered in Tanzania. After experiencing the country’s heavy-hitting hotspots, it is entirely possible to escape the crowds, and with a little effort have vast tracts of the Tanzanian wilderness all to yourself.

Fast facts about safaris in Tanzania:

  • Tanzania has a human population of 60 million comprised of a staggering 120 ethnic groups.
  • It is the home of Mount Kilimanjaro, known as the roof of Africa.
  • Tanzania has the largest concentration of wildlife per square kilometre of any country in Africa.
  • The currency is the Tanzanian shilling.

tanzania serengeti naona moru camp1

Why we like it

  • A staggering 30% of the country consists of protected wildlife areas.
  • It is home to incredible biodiversity and stunning scenery.
  • There are some very wild and remote locations in the southern and western regions.
  • It is one of the best locations for photographic and walking safaris.
  • Tanzania offers friendly and safe travel with tourism being of high importance here.
  • There are stunning tropical islands on the East Coast.

Comprehensive Guide to Tanzania Safari Highlights

Tanzania, with its unparalleled diversity, offers an array of breathtaking experiences across its five distinct regions: Arusha, Northern Tanzania, Southern Tanzania, Western Tanzania, and the islands of Zanzibar & Mafia. This division is designed to make the exploration of Tanzania’s rich landscapes and cultural heritage more accessible to travelers, each area offering its unique allure.

The conventional tourist itinerary typically covers three key areas: the historic and picturesque islands of Zanzibar, the bustling city of Arusha as the gateway to safari adventures, and the iconic landscapes and wildlife of Northern Tanzania. This route provides a taste of Tanzania’s diverse offerings, from the pristine beaches of Zanzibar to the legendary wildlife spectacles of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.

However, this leaves the Southern and Western regions of Tanzania less traveled, offering untouched wilderness and unique safari experiences for those adventurous enough to explore these areas. Southern Tanzania features vast, open reserves like the Selous and Ruaha, known for their wild beauty and intimate wildlife encounters. Western Tanzania, on the other hand, offers rugged terrains and the opportunity to trek chimpanzees in the Mahale Mountains, presenting a truly off-the-grid adventure.

For those interested in a comprehensive Tanzanian experience, we recommend exploring beyond the usual paths. Each region, from the vibrant city of Arusha, the natural wonders of Northern Tanzania, the untouched wilderness of Southern and Western Tanzania, to the cultural and beach retreats of Zanzibar & Mafia Islands, has its unique character and treasures. Detailed information on these five sections is available on their dedicated pages, providing a deeper insight into what makes Tanzania a destination of such rich diversity and appeal.

By venturing beyond the popular routes, travellers can discover the full spectrum of Tanzania’s beauty, from its world-renowned safaris to secluded beaches and hidden cultural gems.

tanzania ruaha usangu expedition camp25

Arusha: The Gateway to Northern Tanzania

Lying in the shadow of the brooding Mt Meru and surrounded by coffee plantations, the Tanzanian city of Arusha , the capital of the region with the same name, is the gateway to Tanzania’s northern region.

Arusha itself has developed into a thriving city with plenty on offer, but it is what lies just outside that really brings in the visitors. The area is home to the excellent Arusha National Park and is also the perfect base for Mt Kilimanjaro expeditions or the ideal starting point for many safari adventures heading north. Arusha is a phenomenal setting and a great place to let your safari dreams take flight.

Northern Tanzania: A Safari Adventure Awaits

With names like the Serengeti, Mt Kilimanjaro, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area all in attendance, it can be easy to ask yourself why you would choose anywhere else but Northern Tanzania .

In an area where some of the biggest names in all of Africa crowd, it’s perhaps no surprise that this is unquestionably Tanzania’s busiest region. A true-show stopper and an area of the planet you really must visit once before you die.

The allure of Northern Tanzania extends beyond its headline-grabbing attractions. The region’s vast landscapes offer an unparalleled diversity of flora and fauna, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. From the sweeping plains of the Serengeti, alive with the thundering hooves of the Great Migration, to the breathtaking vistas from the summit of Kilimanjaro, every moment spent in this part of the world is imbued with the essence of adventure.

Southern Tanzania: Off-the-Beaten-Track Safaris

After seeing the names above that comprise Northern Tanzania’s blockbuster locations, Southern Tanzania can sound like a sad second place, but it holds two enormous aces up its sleeve – the price and the reduced numbers.

A safari in Southern Tanzania might not include many of the biggest names in the industry, but it is much more affordable and significantly quieter.

What’s more, big names aren’t everything. Yes, the Serengeti might look great on an Instagram post, but a visit to the lesser-known Selous Game Reserve, one of the largest game reserves in the country, and the Ruaha National Park, offer more than enough safari excitement and glimpses of exactly the kind of wildlife you can to Africa to see.

tanzania ruaha usangu expedition camp17

Western Tanzania: Wilderness and Adventure Combined

If you thought the south was quiet, Tanzania’s western region is wild, rugged, and wonderfully free of mass tourism. This is home to some of the country’s least visited national parks and game reserves, including the Katavi National Park, perfect for Big Game viewing, and the Mahale National Park, home to an impressive number of chimpanzees.

This is not the kind of place that has big names but offers spectacular scenery and real adventure nonetheless.

Zanzibar & Mafia Islands: Tropical Paradise Explored

Few names stir the imagination quite like Zanzibar . The once independent island nation -for less than a year – with a colourful and also deeply chequered history, lies just 74 kilometres from the Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam.

The wonderfully atmospheric Stone Town retains much of its yesteryear charm and the beaches that ring the island are frequently spectacular, but often also home to grand sprawling 5* resorts that may not be to everybody’s tastes.

160 km south of Zanzibar, lies Mafia Island, which is far less gangster-esque than the name might suggest. If Zanzibar is bending under the increased pressure of tourism, Mafia Island provides a much more authentic Indian Ocean experience with a fraction of the crowds.

Choosing Your Tanzanian Safari: Adventure or Luxury?

Well, they all are – mainly because of their variation, with each offering different attractions suited to different types of travellers.

Of the many different means of experiencing Tanzania, our two most highly recommended are either an adventure safari or a luxury safari experience. For those keen adventurers, it’s easy to get off the beaten path to wild and remote areas, away from the tourist crowds, and step outside of your comfort zone to immerse yourself in the landscape and its people’s culture.

Tanzania is especially great for those seeking to move their body whilst on holiday and challenge themselves physically in jaw-droppingly beautiful landscapes. Tanzania is packed full of these hidden gems, just waiting for those ready to rise to the challenge.

On the other hand, if you want the best-of-the-best in terms of a luxury safari, fantastic accommodation, exclusivity, top-notch service, and fine cuisine, then Tanzania is a perfect match. Home to some incredibly luxurious lodges that are strategically positioned to make the most of the wildlife density and movement of the animals, but also have been refined over the many years to absolute perfection.

What’s more, it has that classic East African Luxury safari atmosphere in abundance. It’s a feeling that’s hard to describe, but trust us, it’s there. View some of our recommended Luxury Tanzanian Lodges here .

Best Time to Visit Tanzania for an Unforgettable Safari Experience

As Tanzania is close to the equator, there can be some variations in weather, but typically it has 4 main seasons. It is considered an all-year destination, but the season you visit will greatly impact your experience, so be sure to choose the correct season for the experience you’re looking for.

The long wet season (March, April & May)

This is when Tanzania receives the majority of its rainfall and is fairly consistent every year. Safaris at this time of the year can become complicated as road conditions deteriorate and animals disperse from water sources. This is certainly not the ideal season to be on safari so be prepared to get a bit wet and muddy. In March, the wildebeest are usually calving in the Southern Serengeti, around the Ndutu area, and although harsh, predator viewing can be incredible during this time.

The short wet season (November & December)

These rains are not as intense as the main rainy season and can be unpredictable and vary considerably from year to year. A safari at this time of the year can be enjoyable provided you don’t mind the chance of a little rain.

The long dry season (June to October)

This is the peak season for tourism where rainfall is unusual, and days are normally clear and sunny. Keep in mind that temperatures vary depending on location and altitude. This is considered the best time for safaris because animals start to congregate around water sources, making the viewing of iconic animals more predictable.

It is between August and September when the annual wildebeest migration starts to cross the Mara River. Often regarded as the ‘greatest show on earth’, it’s an experience high on many travellers’ bucket lists. In the Tarangire National Park, the Silale Swamp becomes a hotspot for incredible game viewing, as does the Ruaha River in Ruaha National Park where large lion prides hunt buffaloes along the riverbanks.

The short dry season (January & February)

This is the period between the short and long rainy seasons where rain cannot be completely ruled out. It is, however, a great time of the year to travel. Many areas are still green from the short rains, so photographs are clear and crisp with vibrant colours. Birding is also at its peak as migratory birds have now arrived and the area teems with great flocks.

Why Tanzania Should Be Your Next Safari Destination:

East Africa has become a Mecca for safari travel in recent decades, but in Tanzania, not only is it home to some of the most iconic names in the business, the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Mt Kilimanjaro, it has the infrastructure, the know-how, and the animals to back it up.

Whatever it is you’re looking for in your Tanzanian Safari and accompanying trips or side excursions, this is a country that delivers spectacular results. From witnessing the extraordinary wildebeest migration in the Serengeti National Park to enjoying the open splendour of the Ngorongoro Crater, there are simply few places that can even begin to rival Tanzania when it comes to an African safari.

And yet, that’s just the start. When you’ve had your fill of animals, visit the longest freshwater lake in the world, and the second deepest, Lake Tanganyika on the DRC border, relax on the historic and beautiful beach-strewn Zanzibar and spend time in the bustling, and yet oddly low-key for a city of 4 million, Dar es Salaam. Tanzania is a country that arrives with a megastar reputation and delivers, in breathtaking fashion.

Tanzania Safari Insider Tip:

Only 25% of the Serengeti is used for most of the tourism that takes place there. That leaves 75% of the Serengeti’s wilderness waiting to be explored on multi-day walking safaris . We feel this is the perfect way to escape the crowds and experience this incredible destination.

Tanzania Safaris

From the wildebeest migration to the big 5 and tropical beaches.

Safari happens almost everywhere you look in Tanzania. It’s been a way of life in East Africa’s second-largest country for decades. Few destinations in Africa can rival Tanzania’s diversity of wildlife and landscapes. From the classic savannah destinations of the Serengeti, Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater to the beaches and coral reefs of Zanzibar, a Tanzania safari delivers one massive experience after another. And that’s before you discover the off-the-beaten-path gems like chimpanzee trekking in the untouched rainforests of Mahale and Rubondo, or crowd-free game viewing among the beautifully wild and unique landscapes of Nyerere (previously Selous) and Ruaha.

From incredible year-round game viewing to the Wildebeest Migration and tropical beach finales, here are some of our best reasons to go on a Tanzania safari:

1. Witness the Great Wildebeest Migration

unique safaris tanzania

Hardly any other destination on Earth can offer a wildlife encounter to match the annual Wildebeest Migration. Forming the centrepiece of most inaugural Tanzania safari itineraries, the Migration is a mind-blowing display of nature at her most extraordinary. About 2 million wildebeest, zebra and antelope run the gauntlet of predators as they migrate around the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. This awe-inspiring event is one of the last mass terrestrial animal movements left on the planet – the herds are so big they can be observed from space!

  • The Serengeti National Park – Tanzania’s flagship conservation area – hosts the bulk of the Migration .
  • Mobile camps move regularly to stay as close to the herds as possible .
  • Some accommodations offer easy access to river crossing points .

Note: availability of well-located safari camps between June and October (river crossing season) is limited. If you want front-row seats to the dramatic river crossings, you should book your Tanzania safari at least a year in advance. Or opt to go when the herds give birth and graze their way across the plains, which is just as impressive to see but easier to guarantee – plus the tourist crowds are fewer. Chat with one of our Africa Safari Experts to plan your trip to coincide with the movements of the herds.

2. See the Big 5 in an Ancient Volcano

unique safaris tanzania

The Ngorongoro Crater was formed around 2.5 million years ago when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself. Now an enclosed ecosystem and World Heritage Site, the Crater is the best place in East Africa to see the Big 5. Measuring in at around 600 metres (1 970 feet) deep, the Crater’s floor covers about 260 square kilometres (100 square miles). Its surprisingly diverse habitats support around 30 000 animals.

  • East Africa’s most reliable Big 5 sightings .
  • One of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa .
  • Home to some of Africa’s densest large mammal populations .

3. Go Off the Beaten Path

unique safaris tanzania

Tanzania’s little-visited parks and reserves are ideal for intrepid safari-goers and those who have already experienced the more familiar destinations in Northern Tanzania. From savannahs and swamps to rainforests and lakes, Tanzania’s undiscovered safari spots offer incredible wildlife encounters far away from the crowds. Plus you can enjoy activities like fishing, walking and boating safaris, and off-roading and night drives – activities not permitted in national parks like the Serengeti.

  • Discover Ruaha National Park , Tanzania’s best-kept secret and home to the country’s biggest elephant population.
  • Visit Nyerere National Park (Selous Game Reserve) , one of Africa’s most important sanctuaries for endangered wild dog.
  • Journey to Mahale Mountains or Rubondo Island for one of Tanzania’s most unique safari experiences: chimpanzee trekking.

4. End Your Safari on a Tropical Island

unique safaris tanzania

Many Tanzania safaris end with a relaxing stay on a palm-fringed beach lapped by the Indian Ocean’s warm azure waters. Days on safari can be long and dusty, and a sun-kissed tropical island is the ideal place to reflect on your incredible experience before heading back to everyday life. You can easily fly from a Tanzania safari camp after breakfast and be on a powder-soft beach in time for sunset cocktails.

  • Zanzibar – one of the world’s most romantic honeymoon destinations.
  • Mnemba Island – a private island holiday paradise.
  • Pemba Island – among the world’s best diving sites.
  • Mafia Island – swim with migrating whale sharks (about October to April).

5. Climb Africa’s Highest Mountain

unique safaris tanzania

Mount Kilimanjaro is not only the tallest mountain in Africa, it’s also the highest free-standing mountain on Earth. Rising almost 6 kilometres (4 miles) above Tanzania’s plains, climbing to the ‘Roof of Africa’ can take five or more days to complete. There are many routes to the top with varying levels of difficulty, climbing time, crowdedness and natural beauty. Chat with one of our Experts about planning a Kilimanjaro hike, based on your wishes and abilities. We can also easily combine your Kili experience with a Tanzania safari in nearby parks and reserves.

Most travel companies or tour operators that you might book through offer a selection of destinations around the world. Unique Safaris specializes exclusively in Tanzania and all locations in Tanzania.

We are truly the experts for this destination and we understand all the variables of the migration in Serengeti National Park as well as the migration in Tarangire National Park. We have been licensed and operating since 1990 so we are a reliable and respected company that has developed outstanding relationships with all of our partners including Tanzania National Parks, Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute, the Ministry of Tourism and Natural Resources.

Private Itineraries

We have built our reputation on designing private custom-designed itineraries for individuals, families, incentive and corporate travel. Our network of local officials and organizations allow us to customize your program to include activities and excursions that other companies might not have the same ability to arrange. We have hosted various educators; doctors, nurses and dentists; veterinarians, lawyers and judges who want to learn more about the professional challenges in Tanzania as well as immerse themselves in the wildlife experiences.

Of course, we excel in the safari experience with decades of experience and a knowledge of the bush, especially the vast Serengeti, that allows us to take you to the more remote areas away from the crowds.

Unique Safaris Fleet of Vehicles

Unique Safaris owns their own fleet of vehicles and maintains them to the highest standard on our own campus with a full mechanics shop. This is an important “behind the scenes” factor because when a company owns their vehicles they are very invested in keeping them in the best working order. Safari vehicles are an enormous expense and many companies hire other vehicles to avoid these costs for purchase and maintenance. However, vehicle breakdowns can ruin your safari unless you are with a company that can quickly dispatch replacements so you can continue to enjoy what you paid for. There are no paved roads in any of the national parks or game reserves in Tanzania so the wear and tear on vehicles, tires and parts is significant and keeping vehicles in good working order is essential to our service.

When you travel with Unique Safaris you are in our hands from arrival to departure. The commitment to personalized customer service means that no matter the challenges you might face in the bush, we are here to answer questions, solve problems and make sure you are well taken care of.

Reviews From Visitors

Bucket List. The friend I traveled with on this adventure has been my friend for 55 years. This was her number 1 item on her bucket list. When I told her I would go.....she started planning. Within 15 or so months......we were off. And I couldn't be happier.

The camps we stayed at were all top notch. The food was great and very abundant (even the breakfast and lunches we ate on the road). I don't eat that well at home. The pancakes at Sametu were the best I have ever eaten.

We couldn't have done this without the help of Lynn's planning expertise. She helped us every step of the way. Giving tips and making sure that we stayed on task. I feel like I have made a friend. She was fantastic. Our safari was specifically planned for us. We decided what we wanted to see and Lynn helped us plan this perfect trip.

When Joseph and Ester came to go over the trip with us in Arusha, I knew it was going to be wonderful. They explained everything that would happen at each camp so there would be no surprised. And Joseph met us at the end and made sure that we had gotten through to the gate at the airport. Unique Safari was with us from the first minute in Arusha to the last. This was very comforting. I am a person who likes to plan ahead and have everything ready. I never had to worry about anything....they did it for me.

Now to talk about our guide FAZAL. Words cannot express what an adventure he gave us. He asked what we wanted each day, and our response was always "You're the expert you tell us". And we are so happy we did. I can tell you that we saw some amazing things. Actually every night, I asked him how he was going to top that tomorrow. My advice to anyone planning a safari would be to trust the people who are the experts. Fazal taught us not to rush through any experience. Sometime you have to wait to see the best part of an animal.

I was very excited to go on this Safari but it was 100% more than I expected, The saddest part of this trip was when we said good bye to Fazal at the airport. There were definitely tears.

Unique Safari is the complete package HANDS DOWN!!

This trip was postponed due to, well you know. It was well worth the wait. Unique Safaris was top notch and the Guides, Russell, Shedrack and Fazal were knowledgeable, funny and willing to help us get the best experience and the best photos every day. They even helped me learn firsthand about some of the local flora (don't step on these). Our camps and their staffs were excellent and the people of Tanzania were friendly and helpful. You will not be disappointed using Unique for your safari needs also they are a locally owned company so you will help support their economy and businesses.

Traveling the world in a pandemic can be tricky but Meg K. of Unique Safaris did a wonderful job helping us in our safari travel to Tanzania. She kept us up to date on all of the requirements and gave us links to the forms that were needed. She arranged for our covid test prior to leaving Tanzania. She got us a service that whisked us through covid testing, immigration, and customs at the airport. On Safari, all of the camp staff not only went out of the way to make us comfortable but were very conscientious about all of the covid requirements. The highest praise has to go to our guide, Ellison. He got us into position for many a great photograph and didn’t complain when we asked him to move a foot or two so that we got a cleaner image. He was very knowledgeable about where the animals could be found, so we were treated to baby hippos, lion cub, leopard cubs, cheetah cubs, and a myriad of young antelope and zebra. The Mara River crossings were more spectacular than the Great Migration that we saw when we went to Tanzania March 2020. Photographically it was the best photo tour we had ever been on, totally Unique.

Absolutely the best vacation we have ever taken!!!!!! Lynn is what makes this trip so incredible! Her attention to every detail in planning the experience you want, her communication with you is impeccable! I truly cannot thank her enough! Once we arrived - all the planning Lynn mapped out for us, just played out more amazing then we could of ever imagined. Our guide, Russell was outstanding! He was kind, considerate, and so knowledgeable about every single question we asked him. And we asked a lot of questions!!! He really knew the area, animals, and the culture, etc. All the tented camps, food, transfers, and every detail is taken care of by Lynn. We simply showed up and had the most amazing trip of our lives!!! We are already planning a return very soon, Lynn and Unique Safari will be helping us again!!!

I am a US based photo safari workshop leader and to say Unique Safaris provided me and my clients the ultimate luxury safari experience would be an understatement!!! Top that with highly knowledgeable safari guides and it makes for an unforgettable experience. Meg helped me choose my camps based on my needs and boy were they a home run. I couldn't say more about how friendly and accommodating the staff was at each location during the two weeks. Absolutely top service from top to bottom with the Tanzanian staff, guides. and people as a whole absolutely warm and inviting. Looking forward to my return in 2022 and beyond!

If you are considering going on that "once in a lifetime" trip to Tanzania, do yourself a favor and use Unique Safaris. I travel a LOT and Unique is a company that can be trusted and they will make sure your trip is fabulous. I just returned from a 2 week safari and I can't say enough good things about the drivers and camp staff. There were 11 of us on this trip and everyone had a great experience. The tears and hugs when we left our drivers at the airport to go home said it all.

I wanted to take my daughter on safari as her graduation gift, but also wanted a strong focus on the photographic element as a photographer. Yes, I shopped other safari companies too. Lynn at Unique safaris did an amazing job of putting together a custom trip which included cultural activities, balloon rides, and the best game viewing opportunities ever. I made the right choice and am so grateful I did. The staff in Arusha matched us with a guide based on all the info we had provided. Bernard proved to the best guide we could have asked for. He took his job and professional responsibilities very seriously, and yet was able to join in the fun, banter and laughs. The lodging chosen was superb and the food unbelievable good; both roast duck and lamb on New Year's Eve-and we were hours out in the bush. The attention to detail from Lynn in trip preparation, availability and quick response to questions as well as the follow-through on those promises by the Arusha staff make this unquestionable the safari company of choice.

My wife and I just returned from our safari in the Serengeti with Unique Safaris. Ally, our guide, was fantastic in locating animals and birds during our trip. He was able to drive to locations that other guides would NOT attempt due to it being the wet season and some of the roads (basically dirt tracks through the Serengeti) were covered with water and had terrible holes that you could not see until you hit them. The difference with Unique is they use Mud Terrain tires not All Terrain tires like the other safari companies. Other companies stay on the main roads so you see the animals 100 yards away with 15 vehicles parked on the road while we were able to go to more isolated areas and get up close to the animals. Up close being lunch with a large price of lions and 5 lion brothers s walking by our vehicle and hitting it with their tails. We were able to see everything that we had on our wish list as well as gain a better appreciation for the birds in the Serengeti.

We stayed in tents while we were there so the animals were VERY close. The animals can get noisy at night so be prepared to wake up occasionally. One morning we woke up to the sounds of 8 lions taking down a wildebeest about 50 yards from our tent. Our guide had to pick us up for breakfast that morning in our vehicle since the lions were so close. When you stay in the tents you will need someone from the camp to walk with you when it is dark. Also as a treat Ally arranged for us to meet with a Project Cheetah expert researcher who gave us a much better insight into the amazing animal.

I usually do not write reviews but the difference in companies is significant. If you want to see a few animals with the crowds then Unique is not for you. If you do not mind getting bounced around in the vehicle to get to isolated areas and truly experience the Serengeti then Unique is your best option.

Meg did a good job working with us to get within our budget. I would recommend working with her to get within your budget rather than settling for a less expensive nondescript safari.

This was truly an exceptional once in a lifetime experience and Unique Safaris made all the difference. We also met the owner while on safari, and Ali was engaging and made us feel very welcome.

What’s Next for Jane Goodall? An Immersive Spectacle in Tanzania.

“Dr. Jane’s Dream” is going up in East Africa, where visitors can experience the primatologist’s scientific breakthroughs (complete with termite mound).

Close up photo of the 90-year-old face of the primatologist Jane Goodall.

By Ralph Blumenthal

Are you ready for the Jane Goodall Experience?

It’s getting ready for you.

“Dr. Jane’s Dream,” an immersive spectacle by former Walt Disney Imagineers and African artisans celebrating the groundbreaking English primatologist and environmental activist, is taking form in a cultural complex in Tanzania.

Its debut, in the safari gateway of Arusha, between Mount Kilimanjaro and Serengeti National Park , is planned around World Chimpanzee Day, July 14, 2025 — 65 years since Goodall, then a 26-year-old novice researcher chaperoned by her mother, landed at the Gombe forest reserve to begin her field work for the anthropologist Louis Leakey .

Within months she upended scientific doctrine by observing an adult male chimp she called David Greybeard raid a termite mound, stripping leaves from a hollow branch to extract and eat the insects. The making and using of tools was long thought a hallmark of humans.

Since then, the nonstop Goodall, who turned 90 on April 3 during a typically exhausting American tour, has been lionized (or aped) in books and movies. She’s a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a United Nations Messenger of Peace. And champion of a global crusade of young people and celebrities from Prince Harry to Leonardo DiCaprio fighting deforestation, climate change, pollution and factory farming.

Her nonprofit Jane Goodall Institute in the U.S. is projected to raise $30 million this year, with additional millions raised by the other 25 chapters worldwide, a spokesman said. Her youth movement, Roots and Shoots, is operating in 70 countries.

But she has never been presented like this — in an immersive tribute by African artists and Disney veterans. Disney has called Imagineering the “blending of creative imagination with technical know-how.” But “Dr. Jane’s Dream” is not a Disney project; rather, it taps into storytelling techniques by some of its former innovators.

At “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” Goodall said in New York last week, “There’s a tent where my mom and I were and two little peepholes looking out into the world of the chimps.” Visitors will be challenged. “They go into this dream world and are going to have to investigate. It’s like an adventure.”

Goodall is now on one of her globe-circling jaunts that keep her on the road some 300 days a year. She flew in from the West Coast at the end of March and after Canada and a few days back home in her native Bournemouth on the English Channel, she is booked to Europe, Africa, Australia, South America and Asia.

Since Jan. 12, she calculated, she has slept in her own bed five nights.

On April 2, Goodall was on East 54th Street at the Hotel Elysée with its Monkey Bar — a coincidence, she insisted — along with the fact that her top floor suite had been the last abode of the playwright Tennessee Williams, who died there in 1983 at 71, choking on the cap of a bottle of barbiturates.

Her latest project, “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” is unfolding at the Arusha Cultural Heritage Center, opened in 1994 by Saifudin Khanbhai, whose great-grandfather from India established a trading outpost in British colonial Tanganyika in the 1800s.

Khanbhai offered Goodall a location on the five-acre heritage site, amid a complex of half a dozen buildings and four huts displaying the work of some 3,000 artists and jewelers and showcasing the region’s unique blue gemstone, Tanzanite.

“We just connected so well,” Khanbhai said in an interview. “I’m a man of chemistry. If it works it works.”

Her building’s shell of round drumlike forms is already up, with the interior exhibits coming over the next year.

“Basically, she is getting the deep storytelling, design and immersiveness of Disney Imagineering because — well, we adore Jane,” said Tom Acomb, an architect with his own firm, AOA, and a former Imagineer who teamed up with colleagues including Joe Rohde , creator of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in Florida, to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars of free design services for “Dr. Jane’s Dream.”

But Acomb said, “Disney has nothing to do with the project, nor is any technology of theirs deployed in any way. What is in the mix is a process — the process that was unique to Disney Imagineering’s ability to tell a story.” He said they still did support work for Disney when called upon.

The idea, Rohde explained, was to create “much more of an experience center than an expository center.”

“What we’re trying to do,” he added, “is sort of take all the feelings and emotions that made Jane Goodall Jane Goodall and transfer that into a series of objects and encounters.”

It was not so much “about” Goodall, he noted, as “feeling her.”

He said it would feature a kiosk with a recording of Goodall translating chimp cries into English; a ceiling of 800 leaflike tiles painted by various African artists, models of animals wrapped in information about them (requiring close study by visitors, just as Goodall had to closely study her subjects); and elaborately carved and painted tree trunks in a style of artmaking called Makonde .

And, of course, the famous termite mound.

“Rather than just telling people that this is the way chimps fish for food,” Rohde said, “we want to compel people to do something like what the chimps do — use these little probes to stimulate something within the termite mound. You’re not learning about what chimps do — you’re learning what they do.

“It’s a very Jane Goodall thing.”

To keep “Dr. Jane’s Dream" maintainable locally, it will limit fancy technology, and allow for improvisation, Rohde said.

“It’s going to be what it becomes as the artists make it.”

Born in London in 1934, Goodall grew up cherishing animals, even, as a not-yet-2-year-old, taking earthworms to bed with her. Her mother, Vanne, convinced her that the worms would do better in the ground. At 4½ she lost herself in the henhouse trying to figure out where eggs came from.

Her parents separated when she was little and, amid Nazi bombings, she relocated with her mother and younger sister to her grandmother’s home in Bournemouth. The first book she read was “The Story of Dr. Dolittle,” about a country physician who talks to the animals. Another early book, “Tarzan of the Apes” left her jealous, she remembers: “He marries the wrong Jane.”

Set on visiting Africa, Goodall saved her waitressing money and, at 23 in 1957, sailed to Kenya where, though lacking a college degree, she sought out Leakey who with his wife, Mary, was excavating early human fossils in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania.

One day at the site, out walking with another assistant, Gillian Trace, and the Leakeys’ two protective Dalmatians, Toots and Bottom-Biter, Goodall noticed they were being trailed by a young male lion. The dogs, off leash, were busy chasing a mouse.

“Gillian wanted to hide in the vegetation at the bottom of the gorge,” she recalled last week. “I said no, the lion would know where we are, we won’t know where the lion is. We have to climb up on the plains so the lion could see us. I had this firm belief that animals wouldn’t hurt us if we are not a threat to them.”

Goodall said she was less worried about the lion than coming back to Mary Leakey without the Dalmatians.

Afterward, Louis Leakey, impressed, offered her a job studying chimpanzees for clues to man’s earliest ancestors. She became one of his three ape mentees, “the trimates,” who also included Dian Fossey on gorillas and Birutė Galdikas on orangutans. Fossey would be murdered in Rwanda in 1985.

Goodall returned to England but sailed back to Africa with her mother in 1960 to begin her research in Gombe, on Lake Tanganyika.

Alone in the jungle with only their cook, both were felled by malaria. Her mother nearly died. “We just lay in our beds and handed the thermometer back and forth,” Goodall recalled. Somehow, without quinine, they recovered.

She tried repeatedly to make contact with the chimps but they remained aloof, as recorded by an old movie camera she propped up in a tree fork.

Until, after nearly four months, David Greybeard let her get close enough as he made his tool of the tree branch.

“It was held in the left hand, poked into the ground, and then removed coated with termites,” she recorded in her field book. “The straw was then raised to the mouth and the insects picked off with the lips, along the length of the straw, starting in the middle.”

Goodall said she knew immediately that her breakthrough would thrill Leakey. He cabled back: “Now we must redefine ‘tool,’ redefine ‘man’ or accept chimpanzees as human.”

But Goodall also observed the primates in warfare and cannibalism — along with manifestations of empathy and communal rearing of offspring orphaned by poachers. At a waterfall, she observed chimps dancing as if in religious awe.

Sergio Almécija , senior research scientist in primates and human evolution at the American Museum of Natural History, said Goodall revolutionized the way we understand primates and other animals — “like the transition from radio to color TV.”

Starting in 1961, Goodall returned periodically to Cambridge for what became four years of doctoral studies in ethology. “I was told you must focus on feeding behavior or maternal behavior, but not everything,” she recalled.

She focused on everything. She also rejected complaints that she was giving names, not just numbers, to her chimp subjects and recognizing their humanlike traits.

When National Geographic sent a renowned Dutch wildlife photographer, Baron Hugo van Lawick, to Gombe in 1962 to document an irresistible story — a young Englishwoman among the apes — a romance blossomed. They married in London in 1964 and had a child, Hugo Eric Louis, nicknamed Grub. (Now a house builder in Africa and Latin America, he has two sons and a daughter, Goodall’s grandchildren, who work on some of her projects.)

A slowdown in assignments sent van Lawick in search of work in the Serengeti and he and Goodall divorced in 1974. A year later she married the Tanzanian national parks director, Derek Bryceson . He died of cancer in 1980, when Goodall was 46.

In 1986, she helped organize a conference in Chicago, and was shocked to learn how deforestation and pollution were decimating animal populations.

“I went to the conference as a scientist and I left as an activist,” she said.

After revelations of terrible conditions at the Brazzaville zoo in the Republic of Congo, she persuaded the American oil company Conoco to help build a chimp sanctuary in that country. She convinced leading research laboratories like Harvard’s that chimps, after all, made poor models for medical experimentation to benefit humans. Many long-captive animals were released to sanctuaries (though ape-trafficking remained rampant).

She widened her focus to human behavior as well, and became a vegan. “How can we even save the precious chimpanzees,” she asked, “when people all around are struggling to survive?”

Some of her favorite stuffed animals that she carries around in her hand luggage sat last week on a mantle in her New York hotel room: Mr. H, a monkey from a blinded United States Marine, Gary Haun, who became a proficient magician, skier and sky diver; Pigcasso, a South African pig taught to create artworks with a paintbrush in her mouth; an octopus from the movie “My Octopus Teacher”; and Rattie, an African pouched rat trained to detect land mines.

Two other items were away on display at a National Geographic Museum traveling exhibition called “Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall” — a piece of the Berlin Wall and a limestone rock from Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island prison.

All symbols, Goodall says, of her mantra — hope.

“I’m seeing humanity as at the mouth of a very long dark tunnel,” she said, “and right at the end is a little star — that’s hope. But in order to get there we’ve got to roll up our sleeves and climb under and crawl over all the obstacles that lie in the path, like climate change, and loss of biodiversity. And a very important one is poverty. We must alleviate poverty because really poor people destroy the environment to survive.”

In her hotel suite, the living room lights and brass chandelier were lit. A photo of Tennessee Williams glistened in a vitrine.

Goodall was in a bedroom, resting her eyes from her travels and lectures into the spotlights. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the chandelier began to sway.

Goodall didn’t seem surprised to hear of it. Once, she said, staying in another suite on the same floor, she had seen an apparition.

Did she believe in a hereafter?

There’s either nothing or there’s something, she said. Finding out the answer would be “the next great adventure.”
