Why Trust Byrdie

Byrdie / Jaclyn Mastropasqua

If you're new to the concept of chilled beauty products, you might be wondering what all the hype is about. These pint-sized, aesthetically pleasing refrigerators are not meant to be filled with food but lotions, potions, mists , and masks . "Refrigerating your skincare products can help them last longer and improve the application experience," explains Dr. Adebola Dele-Michael, M.D., FAAD , a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Radiant Skin Dermatology & Laser in New York. "For instance, I recommend refrigerating sheet masks before applying them to the skin after a laser procedure because the cooling effect soothes the skin and reduces redness."

When we say skincare fridges are cool, we mean it figuratively and literally. You can reduce the temperature on more perishable products, like clean formulas that might not contain as many preservatives. "Those may benefit from being in the fridge to extend the shelf life ," says Dr. Martha H. Viera, M.D., FAAD , a board-certified dermatologist based in Miami. Some skincare fridges can warm your products, too, such as your face rollers, for de-puffing benefits.

To find the best skincare fridges, we researched the highest-rated picks and evaluated each based on their temperature ranges, color selection, and more. After consulting dermatologists and considering dozens of options, we landed on this list to give you the best in show.

Best Overall

Cooluli mini fridge.

Comes in various sizes

Chic Design

May not be long-lasting

Size: 11.4 x 10 x 13.4 inches | Temperature Range: 35 to 150 degrees | Colors: Gold, pink, blue, black, pattern, pink, white | Features: Portable, offers cooling and heating

While most mini-fridges have that irresistibly chic, gotta-have-it appeal, the Cooluli Infinity stands out from the rest. Available in all our favorite colors and then some (think black, gold, pink, blue, white, and three colorful patterns), this cute little crisper has a sleek tempered glass front, three shelves, and built-in door storage.

Measuring just over 13 inches tall, 10 inches wide, and 11 inches deep, this mini-fridge is big enough to store what you need while still being portable at 8 pounds—and it has a top handle too. We also like that this skincare fridge offers a warming function in addition to refrigeration—it can get down to 35 degrees and up to about 150 degrees—which means you can heat your oil products and face masks before application if you prefer. Doing so can help the skin better absorb the product.

Who It's For

This is a great option for those who are looking for a holds-everything mini-fridge that can toggle between warm and cool temperatures—making it a must-have for skincare products and tools (when used separately).

Best Budget

Frigidaire portable retro mini fridge.

Retro design

Removable shelf

Size: 11.4 x 9.4 x 13.4 inches | Temperature Range: 35 to 150 degrees | Colors: Gold, pink, blue, black, pattern, pink, white | Features: Portable, offers cooling and heating

For something a bit more wallet-friendly, check out this mini-fridge from Frigidaire. The throwback-inspired design looks like it’s right out of an old movie, featuring a removable shelf, a little oval window, and shiny metal hardware. We also like that it weighs just 3 pounds (making it a portable choice), has a Bluetooth speaker, and can get as cold as 27 degrees. Use it as a skincare fridge, or swap out your products for snacks to take on a picnic.

Who It’s For

This mini fridge flawlessly complements those with a retro aesthetic. Just pick it up by its trusty handle and get glowing to the current soundtrack of your life.

Best Compact

Astroai mini fridge.

Lightweight and small-size

Includes a removable shelf

Can be used in the car

Not enough space for large items

Size: 9.45 x 6.89 x 10 inches | Temperature Range: 32 to 150 degrees | Colors: Black, blue, pink, teal, white | Features: Portable, offers cooling and heating

This exceedingly compact skincare fridge measures roughly 9 x 7 x 10 inches and provides barely 0.15 cubic feet of storage space. But in our opinion, that’s not a bad thing because it's ideal for anyone with limited counter space who wants a place to store their best-loved products so they don’t have to trudge off to the kitchen to retrieve them. Plus, the removable shelf allows you to stash taller tubes and bottles as needed. We also like that it’s quiet when running and very lightweight.

This mini-fridge is a must-buy for those who are always on the go. It’s lightweight, making it convenient for travel, and it keeps its contents cool, not cold—which is ideal for skincare products.

Best Portable

The beauty spy mini fridge.

The-beauty-spy

Easy to carry

Compact and lightweight

Comes with stickers

Smaller temperature range than other models

Size: 5.5 x 5.5 x 8 inches | Temperature Range: 46 to 55 degrees and 130 degrees | Colors: Blue | Features: See-through window, portable, offers cooling and heating

Made for people on the go, Beauty Spy's take on the skincare fridge is this super-compact, ultra-portable number. It weighs less than 4 pounds—which is a little heavier than the Frigidaire model above—but it has a convenient carrying handle to make it (in our opinion!) the best portable option for people who need to bring their products on the go. We also like that it comes with a sheet of stickers for you to decorate the front to give your skincare routine a bit more personality.

We recommend this mini-fridge for those who can’t get enough of the vintage aesthetic. Bonus points if you prefer a peek-a-boo window—this pick has just that.

Best for Countertop Display

Crownful mini fridge.

Modern and simple design

Adjusting temperature is time-consuming

Size: 7.48 x 9.85 x 10.83 inches | Temperature Range: 32 to 150 degrees | Colors: Pink, green, black, white | Features: Portable, offers cooling and heating, quiet

Measuring about 11 x 10 x 7 inches, this itty-bitty refrigerator is the best countertop option. Not only is it lightweight, but this pared-down, modern silhouette will complement most bathrooms. But beyond aesthetics, we appreciate that it cools down to 32 degrees and warms up to 149 degrees (though make sure you check your products’ instructions because it’s not always a good idea to turn up the heat if your product is meant to be used at room temperature).

We recommend this pick to anyone new to skincare fridges. This one doesn’t take up much space, making it small enough to be comfortably placed on your bathroom counter or your nightstand.

Best for Desk

Koolatron retro mini portable fridge.

Compact and will be a great desk accessory

Includes removable shelf

Reviewers note it could be sturdier

Size: ‎6.8 x 7 x 10 inches | Temperature Range: 32 to 135 degrees | Colors: Pink, black, aqua | Features: Portable, offers cooling and heating, locking door handle

Looking for something to place on your desk or vanity? Your best bet is the Koolatron Retro Portable 6 Can AC/DC Mini Fridge Cooler. It takes up only about 0.3 square feet of space and has a removable shelf for adjustable storage. We love the pale blush option, but black is always a tasteful choice—and there are other color options available, too, if neither of those colors are for you.

This sleek option is a must-have for those looking for extra skincare storage at work. Think lip gloss or concealer for touch-ups.

Best With Mirror

Cooseon mini portable beauty fridge.

Includes mirror

LED lights for visibility

Size: ‎10.23 x 7.87 x 11.41 inches | Temperature Range: 32 to 140 degrees | Colors: White | Features: Portable, offers cooling and heating, LED lighted mirror

Skincare fridges are a lot like medicine cabinets, which, by the looks of it, is where the Cooseon gets its inspiration. This contemporary cooler features a mirrored front with an LED-lit border, allowing you to apply your products right in front of the fridge if you’re on the go and need to quickly complete your skincare routine. We also like the removable shelf design—a feature that comes in handy if you have some larger skincare products to store.

For those who prefer multiuse products, this pick—which offers a dimmable LED light and mirror—is for you.

Best Lighted

Chefman personal mirrored mini fridge.

Includes mirror and lights

Sleek design

Doesn't get super cold

Size: ‎7.25 x 10.25 x 11.25 inches | Temperature Range: 32 to 140 degrees | Colors: White | Features: Portable, offers cooling and heating, LED lighted mirror

We're also big fans of the Chefman Personal Mirrored Mini Fridge, which has a mirrored door and a bright LED light for an illuminated skincare routine to guide your step-by-step product application. Bathroom, bedside, vanity, or desk, wherever you place it, it's sure to enhance the ambiance of your space. Many reviewers call out that it’s colder than they initially expected, which comes in handy if you’re a lover of sheet masks and jade rollers.

A must-have for multiproduct skincare routines, this mini-fridge serves as the ultimate storage space for your serums and moisturizers and comes in handy when you apply them every day.

Best for Makeup

Qubi mini skincare and cosmetics makeup fridge.

Extra storage space

Reviewers note that it doesn't get that cold

Size: 12.1 x 8.54 x 12.9 inches | Temperature Range: 50 to 65 degrees | Colors: Cream, pink | Features: Temperature display, LED light, door shelves, carrying handle

Another option for cosmetics, this fridge has plenty of shelves and door space to fit your lip products or concealers. It's super compact and includes a vegan leather carrying handle so that it's portable, and has sleek, rose gold features. We also like that this pick has a smart air cooling system, which helps remove any condensation inside the fridge—a common pain point in other skincare and beauty fridges.

This pick is perfect for those on the hunt for a makeup fridge that’s practical, effective, and stylish.

Best for Organization

Iker beauty mini fridge.

Lots of storage space and compartments

Luxe aesthetic

Fits multiple products

Door doesn't close well

Size: 10.5 x 10 x 16.5 inches | Temperature Range: 50 degrees | Colors: Pink | Features: LED light, 3 main shelves, 2 door shelves, 1 drawer compartment, front glass panel, hidden door handle

Think of this skincare fridge as a mini closet for your beauty products. Considering all of its storage compartments—three shelves, two door shelves, and one large drawer compartment—the fridge is more than capable of fitting an array of skincare and makeup regardless of size. You also wouldn't have to worry about digging through the shelves to locate your face moisturizer or serum because its features help with organizing your beauty space for more hassle-free days.

This pick is for the person who’s looking for a skincare fridge that keeps their products perfectly stored and their life organized (thanks to the writable glass front).

Best Color Range

Caynel mini fridge cooler and warmer.

Great color selection

Reviewers note it can be noisy

Size: 7.2 x 9.95 x 10.83 inches | Temperature Range: 40 to 45 degrees below room temperature | Colors: Black, white, blue, pink, yellow, green, red | Features: Removable shelf, offers cooling and warming

If you want a skincare fridge that can add some color to your shelf, this pick—which weighs 4 pounds—is the perfect option. It comes in seven bright colors and has a retro design that'll look stylish wherever you decide to place it. We love that it has both cooling and warming options with the flip of a switch and a removable shelf for extra storage.

This skincare fridge has everything you need to keep your products cool and also adds a pop of color to any space.

Best Versatile Storage

Homcom portable skincare fridge.

Different types of storage

Double doors

Energy-saving mode

Some customers report that the shelves may not be as sturdy

Size: 10.75 x 10.75 x 17.5 inches | Temperature Range: 50 to 86 degrees | Colors: Green, pink, white | Features: Two doors, three shelves, five door racks, offers cooling and warming

Featuring uniquely different types of storage compartments, this mini-fridge is a pro at keeping skincare products organized with its three shelves and five door racks. We like that this skincare fridge—which has a 12-liter capacity—has silicone holders that can securely store up to 15 lipsticks . Plus, the current internal temperature and time are conveniently displayed outside the fridge.

This pick is perfect for those who have a variety of skincare products that range in size.

What to Look for in a Skincare Fridge

  • Size : The main thing to consider when browsing skincare fridges is the size. While many are called "mini-fridges," you actually want something significantly smaller than a regular mini-refrigerator. Check the dimensions before buying one to make sure it'll fit on your counter, desk, vanity, or dresser without consuming too much space.
  • Temperature settings : Skincare fridges vary in terms of their temperature settings, which can help with enhancing the efficacy of your beauty products (e.g., cooling your facial tools, such as a face roller, can boost product absorption, whereas warming can help with de-puffing ). Some get as low as 27 degrees, while others only go down to about 45 degrees.
  • Portability: Another thing to consider is portability. If you're planning to keep your skincare fridge in one place, this won't matter as much. But if you want to move it around your home, take it on the go, or take it on your travels, look for a lightweight option with a carrying handle. Many beauty fridges can be plugged into car chargers, too.

In the simplest sense, skincare fridges allow you to store your cosmetics in a cool, dry, dark place. "Most of us have this environment in our medicine cabinet, so a mini-fridge just dedicated to skincare is not all that necessary for most products that are formulated, packaged, and labeled appropriately," notes Dr. Jennifer L. MacGregor, M.D. , of Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York.

While it depends on the product, somewhere between 40 to 60 degrees is ideal—not as cold as you keep your regular refrigerator, but still significantly cooler than room temperature.

Dr. Viera suggests keeping eye creams, jade rollers, gel face masks, and under-eye patches in a skincare fridge to make them more comfortable against your skin and potentially reap some redness-reducing or de-puffing benefits. Additionally, you might want to refrigerate botanical-antioxidant formulas to keep them stable and maintain their growth factors.

"Another category of products that would do well to go on cool or chilled would be anti-redness/soothing masks and moisturizers," offers Dr. MacGregor.

"Certain prescription medications, such as compound medication that we as dermatologists use all the time for our patients, need to be kept in the fridge in order to be stable," Dr. Viera adds. "Also, some products that can help with certain conditions such as rosacea , itching, or sensitive skin can benefit from being used cold since it creates an anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive effect."

What to Keep in Mind

Your questions, answered, why shop with us.

InStyle / Jaclyn Mastropasqua

We love skin care no matter the temperature, but sometimes an extra-cool serum or chilled spritz of a mist is just that much more luxurious and relaxing. Enter the skin care fridge : A mini refrigerator for storing your favorite beauty products for an extra boost of cool (or sometimes heat).

Not only does the chill add a refreshing element to your skin care routine , but it can also keep your products fresher for longer. For example, according to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Carmen Castilla , keeping vitamin C serums with ascorbic acid in a cold environment can prevent them from oxidizing as quickly. And while a regular fridge will work too, there’s something undeniably chic about a fridge dedicated exclusively to your beauty products. That’s why we rounded up the best skin care fridges on the market. From options with impressive storage to mini fridges with unique features (like smart modes and heat settings), you can find a skin care fridge that fits your collection and your space, below.

Best Overall

Cooluli 15l mini fridge.

This 15-liter fridge has ample storage with two adjustable and removable shelves and two in-door container baskets.

On average, the fridge stops working after around two years of use.

Cooluli’s mini fridge checks all our boxes—ample storage, cooling and heating abilities, multiple color options, two different sizes, quiet functions, and minimal condensation. While the 10-liter option is also great, we’re partial to the 15-liter one. With two adjustable and removable shelves and two in-door container baskets, it’s customizable to any beauty collection and makes keeping things organized a breeze.

And we’re not the only fans: The fridge has over 6,000 five-star ratings on Amazon. Beauty influencers love the fridge too. “I love my Cooluli fridge!” beauty content creator Sarah Palmyra shares, “I customized it with stickers and it works very well.”

The only potential problem with Cooluli’s mini fridge is its lifespan. A few reviewers note cooling problems after around two years of use, which is honestly pretty par for the course when it comes to mini fridges.

Colors: Black, gold, blue, fuschia, white | Dimensions: 10.5 x 13 x 14.75 inches | Storage Specs: Two adjustable removable shelves, two in-door container baskets

Best Budget

Personal chiller portable mini fridge.

The fridge is tiny, making it perfect for cramped apartments.

The temperature doesn’t get super cold.

When looking for a skin care fridge, size is important. You want something that fits enough products without taking up precious real estate. With a 4-liter capacity, this Personal Chiller mini fridge strikes the perfect balance. It has both cooling and warming capabilities, and the lightweight material and handle on top make it easily portable. In terms of storage, there’s a single removable shelf, which is fairly standard when it comes to skin care fridges (especially those on the more affordable end of the spectrum).

The fridge works by heating or cooling from the ambient temperature, and, according to the brand, can chill up to 32 degrees below the temperature of any given room. That being said, the fridge’s cooling and warming capacities are fine at best, and it takes around four to six hours to reach peak coldness. We find that the fridge is best for keeping products slightly cool or slightly warm—not actively hot or cold.

Colors: Pink | Dimensions: 5.3 x 5.5 x 7.9 inches | Storage Specs: Removable shelf

Best Splurge

Homcom portable skincare fridge.

The design is ridiculously sleek, and there’s plenty of room for product storage.

The shelves aren’t the sturdiest.

We apologize if we're speaking out of turn, but this is potentially the sexiest mini fridge we’ve ever seen. There’s something about those sleek rounded edges and the tiny digital display screen that looks undeniably luxe . Beyond the design, The HOMCOM skin care fridge also has three modes—intelligent constant temperature, night mute, and energy saving—and comes with a slew of features, like a built-in timer and LED lighting.

In terms of storage space, the 12-liter capacity should be more than enough—with three shelves, five door racks with silicon holders (perfect for lip products), and one drawer, you can easily fit in multiple full-sized products alongside chilled skin care tools like jade rollers and gua sha stones .

The one gripe we have is the flimsy plastic material of the three interior shelves. They’re not removable and can’t handle a ton of weight, so you definitely have to be strategic about where you place your heavier products.

Colors: White, Green | Dimensions: 10.75 x 10.75 x 17.5 inches | Storage Specs: three shelves, five door racks, 15 silicon holders, and one drawer

Frigidaire Portable Retro Mini Fridge

We’re fans of the color range and the nostalgic design.

Reviewers note some leaking and condensation problems.

For those who want a compact design, the Frigidaire mini fridge is a retro-inspired dream. It’s one of the cuter skin care fridges we’ve come across with its '60s-inspired design and hardware, and the removable shelf allows for a bit of customization when it comes to storage. The fridge also comes in multiple colors—blue, black, pink, and red—which allows for further personalization.

Despite fitting about 6 liters, the fridge is compact and light, weighing in at just 3 pounds. It also comes with a car adapter, making it great for travel. We will note that it does produce notable hissing noise and some slight leaking problems, but the fridge is fully functional and does what it claims to.

Colors: Black, blue, pink, red | Dimensions: 7.08 x 11.81 x 10.4 inches | Storage Specs: Removable shelf

Best Storage

Iker beauty fridge.

The storage on this fridge is elite, with ample space for all your favorite products.

The 12-liter design may be too big for small spaces.

Have a pretty extensive skin care collection and want to keep everything chilled and organized? Look no further than this sleek, spacious skin care fridge. The drawer area is ideal for storing sheet masks , while the upper partitioned areas fit around three to four bottles of cream, three to four essence bottles, and two bottles of lotion. The side shelving has space for lipstick tubes, though the partition plate can be removed for storing hand cream and other tubular products.

With a steady temperature of 50 degrees, the mini fridge keeps products cool but decidedly not cold. And with all that storage space, the mini fridge is, well, not so mini. Weighing in at 13 pounds and with a 12-liter storage capacity, the fridge isn’t for those low on space. That being said, it’s an obvious downside to any fridge you’ll find with superior storage space.

Colors: Peach pink, sugar white | Dimensions: 10.5 x 10 x 16.5 inches | Storage Specs: 12-liter interior

Best for Organization

Qubi mini skincare and cosmetics makeup fridge.

The rounded design and vegan leather handle are ultra chic, plus the in-door shelf maximizes storage space.

There are only two temperature options, 50 degrees and 65 degrees.

We’re huge fans of QUBI’s sleek skin care fridge. From the rounded corners to the chic vegan leather handle, it’s the type of skin care fridge you can proudly leave on display. With an included removable riser-type shelf and in-door sheet mask storage, the fridge allows for customized organization and countless configurations of your favorite skin care products.

In fact, one reviewer was able to fit five face serums , two moisturizers, an oil, a lip product, and multiple sheet masks in her fridge. Plus, the smart air cooling system helps get rid of any water and condensation that might occur in the fridge, which can be a major problem with mini fridges. The door is magnetically sealed, so it easily closes and actually stays closed.

The fridge only offers two temperature settings—50 degrees and 65 degrees—which isn’t ideal, but it still manages to keep products chilled. While there are mixed reviews when it comes to the sound of the fridge, it does feature an ultraquiet mode for those who find its noise bothersome.

Colors: Cream white | Dimensions: 14.7 x 14 x 10 inches | Storage Specs: Removable shelf/riser, in-door sheet mask storage

Best With a Heat Mode

Caynel mini fridge cooler and warmer.

The temperature options are adjustable.

Some users note it doesn't last the longest.

Though we typically think of skin care fridges as cooling devices only, there are a few options out there that offer both heating and chilling settings. The CAYNEL Mini Fridge is one of these innovative products. With the choice to chill up to 45 degrees and heat up to 140 degrees, you have the option to cool your favorite face mask to a refreshing temperature or warm up your jade roller for a relaxing facial massage—which can all be done with the flip of one switch.

While the varied temperature settings of this device already make it stand out, we also love that it’s environmentally friendly. The device’s semiconductor is energy-efficient and Freon-free (a commonly used coolant that can be quite toxic). Pro tip: Put your most eco-conscious skin care products inside to double up on your saving-the-planet efforts.

Colors: Blue, green, and pink  | Dimensions: 7 x 10 x 11 inches | Storage Specs: Removable shelf

Lvara Smart Mini Skincare Fridge

The Smart Life app allows users to set the temperature anywhere from 42 degrees to 82 degrees.

The small shelf on top is virtually useless, as it’s incredibly small and the fridge has issues closing when product is stored on it.

Meet the LVARA Smart Mini Skincare Fridge—the smartest mini fridge you’ll ever find. Simply download the Smart Life app to your phone to control the temperature from anywhere between 42 degrees to 82 degrees. You can also set reminders for expiration dates , so you’ll make the most of your beauty collection. Best of all, you don’t need to use the app—the fridge has three modes (standard, intelligent, and night) for automatic operations and set rest times. Plus, it also features air cooling, non-freezing, frost-free, and dust-proof technologies for easy maintenance and impressive cooling capabilities.

Our one gripe with the otherwise perfect fridge is the ineffective tiny top shelf. Anything taller than a mascara tube lying down on the shelf will make the fridge impossible to close, and the horizontal storage makes for cramped storage capabilities.

Colors: White, dark green, pink | Dimensions: 15.2 x 7.6 x 8.9 inches | Storage Specs: Shelf, in-door storage

Best With Mirror

Cooseon mini portable beauty fridge.

The mirrored door features an adjustable LED light, making the fridge truly multifunctional.

The mini removable shelf is ridiculously tiny and offers limited additional storage.

If you plan on taking your skin care fridge on the go, consider one with an LED mirror like this one from Cooseon. It’s seriously multifunctional—it cools and heats beauty products, works in homes and cars, and features the light-up mirror. The 4-liter fridge weighs in just under 8 pounds and features a convenient carry handle for portable use. It also offers an impressive temperature range of 35.6 degrees to 140 degrees. Plus, the mirrored door has an adjustable LED light, making on-the-go makeup and skin care application incredibly easy.

Unfortunately, the removable shelf included is absurdly small—you can store maybe one jar on it. We’d much prefer a traditional removable shelf that spans the width of the fridge instead.

Colors: White | Dimensions: 6.89 x 10.24 x 8.66 inches | Storage Specs: Mini removable shelf, in-door storage

Elecwish Refrigerator

It's super portable.

The LED mask isn't super bright.

While we admit a good amount of skin care fridges are on the small side, sometimes we need them to be really , well, small in order to fit our personal space. Enter, then, the Elecwish Mini Refrigerator. This unit has a 4-liter capacity—making it a great fit for skin care minimalists with less extensive routines. It also weighs in at 3 pounds, so it’s easy to carry if you’re in that move-every-two-years phase of life (or if you just like to travel).

That said, perhaps our favorite feature of this space-saving superstar is its LED lighted mirror door with three light settings—the best way to save further space if we’ve ever heard one. It’s not the brightest though, so definitely have your phone flashlight handy.

Colors: White | Dimensions: 11.81 x 10.71 x 8.66 inches | Storage Specs: Lifting handle, double-bracket feet

  • Size: Skin care fridges can take up quite a bit of room—even the smaller ones. You’ll want to keep your space in mind when purchasing a skin care fridge. It will need to be plugged in and at least 2 inches away from the wall to allow the fan and vent in the back to work properly. For those who simply can’t give up precious real estate for a skin care fridge but still want those cooling benefits, Palmyra shares some great advice: “Honestly, skin care fridges are so cute but if you don't mind storing your skin care in your regular fridge that will also do the trick!”
  • Storage: In addition to size concerns, storage capabilities are important to consider. How many products do you have? How many do you want to keep in your fridge? Palmyra says she likes storing vitamin C serums , sheet masks, face mists, eye serums, and water-based toners in her fridge—which requires ample storage space.
  • Temperature Settings: Most standard mini fridges keep products cool—not cold. If temperature matters to you, look for fridges with customizable cooling and heating settings.

Is a skin care fridge necessary?

Let us be real, here: A skin care fridge is totally not a must-have. “My two cents: A skin care fridge is not necessary, but I'm a big believer in self-care. So if a dedicated skin care fridge would make you happy, I say go for it,” says Palmyra.

Dr. Castilla agrees: “I don't think a specific skin care fridge is absolutely necessary. Your regular refrigerator would work just as well. The skin care fridge does add a level of convenience since you can store the products where you usually apply them.”

Ultimately, a skin care fridge is a fun addition to a skin care routine, but it is by no means necessary. If you want to keep products cool but don’t want to spend money on a skin care fridge, storing a few serums and eye creams in your regular fridge works just as well.

What products should you keep in the fridge?

“Products that can lose their potency with heat such as vitamin C, hydroquinone, or preservative-free products may last longer if stored in a fridge,” Dr. Castilla shares. We like storing products like vitamin C serums (especially those with ascorbic acid), sheet masks, under-eye masks , face mists, eye serums, and water-based toners and moisturizers. You can also keep facial tools like gua sha stones and jade rollers in a skin care fridge. Just be careful that the chill doesn’t end up cracking the stones.

What shouldn’t be put in a skin care fridge?

Avoid storing any oil-based products in the fridge—things like cleansing oils and balms, as well as certain serums, moisturizers, and face oils . Keeping these types of products in a skin care fridge can mess with their stability and change their consistency. Dr. Castilla also suggests keeping clay masks at room temperature, as they have the potential to dry out faster if refrigerated.

How cold do skin care fridges get?

Specific temperatures vary from fridge to fridge but most keep products cool (rather than actively cold) around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Super sleek, this chic fridge design will look fantastic on your bathroom countertop or bedroom. It holds a lot of products, and with four different compartments, you'll quickly find a home for your full-size serums and moisturizers. One Amazon reviewer claims, "I have six full-size facial creams in the drawer along with a few travel-size masks and lotions. I could still fit maybe two more jars of face cream inside the drawer." The tradeoff for such a large capacity is a large footprint; this pick will take up a good chunk of counter space.

The double doors are efficient for holding toners, eye creams and facial mists, and the interior is lit with an LED light to easily see your products. It can keep products cool or warm, with temperatures the brand claims spans from 50ºF-86ºF, and the digital display makes it easy to see the current temperature.

Cooluli specializes in mini thermoelectric fridges, and this one’s lightweight, comes with a carrying handle and claims its three-amp cooling chip s aves energy . It also fits plenty: “Without the middle shelf, I’ve got more than a dozen sheet masks, three 1-2 ounce vials of serums and toner, an eye cream, and an eye serum roller,” says one Amazon reviewer. At under $50, this mini fridge is affordable for many; however, several reviewers complain that it begins to malfunction anywhere from six months to two years.

The addition of an LED light mirror door o n this fridge lets you apply your skincare and makeup easily — plus, it adds a nice decorative touch to your makeup vanity. It's a little larger at six liters, so it's more accommodating for taller serums, washes and lotions. (If you want something smaller, they do offer a four-liter option.) We like that there's even a heat function in case you wanted to keep moist towels warm. This is a favorite of South Florida-based dermatologist Angelo P. Thrower , M.D, who says, "It's small but with a high capacity. Its towel warmer feature makes it, by far, the most versatile beauty fridge."

AstroAI Mini Thermoelectric Cooler and Warmer

Mini Thermoelectric Cooler and Warmer

With over 38,000 reviews on Amazon and an average 4.3 star rating, reviewers love this budget-friendly pick . The brand claims it cools down to a frosty 32ºF and heats up to 150°F, making it versatile for cooling skincare or warming towels. "Works perfectly at an amazing cost," says one Amazon reviewer, though several warn that it doesn't last longer than a year, so don't expect a ton of longevity from this pick.

Chefman Pink Travel Fridge with Car Charger

Pink Travel Fridge with Car Charger

Headed on a road trip? This mini fridge features a secure latch to keep your items secure, plus a sleek top handle for easy portability . It also comes with a car-compatible plug so you can keep it cool on the road. That said, a few Amazon reviewers agree that the fridge hums a little too loudly. "It's fine for picnics and road trips, but some people might mind it in the bedroom," says one reviewer.

FACETORY Coral Beauty Fridge

Coral Beauty Fridge

From the brand that delivers hard-to-get Korean skincare to your door, this FaceTory skincare fridge is meant to keep all your toners and serums cool. Its 10-liter capacity is more than double that of other skincare fridges, but its footprint is still compact enough to fit atop a vanity . We love that the door-side shelf rack can hold multiple sheet masks and can even be adjusted higher or lower, making it perfect for the person with various types of beauty products. The mini fridge comes in a brilliant coral or meditative mint, adding vibrancy to any room it's in. Amazon reviewers note that a little condensation forms every once in a while, which can be fixed with a gentle wipe down.

Personal Chiller LED Lighted Mini Fridge with Glass Door

LED Lighted Mini Fridge with Glass Door

The lighting on this fridge isn't just aesthetically pleasing — it's useful for applying makeup or skincare. A Walmart customer shares, " Not only is the price affordable but it's also a LED mirror." With a six-liter capacity and adjustable shelf, you have the option to store taller items if needed. It also features an inner door rack for extra storage. The fridge comes in black and white options, but keep in mind that some users found the fridge may not last beyond the first year.

Frigidaire Mini Fridge

Mini Fridge

This retro-style refrigerator is from Frigidaire, a top brand for refrigerators and other home appliances. It's small with just a four-liter capacity and there's no storage space in the door, but it can keep your skincare products cool at your preferred temperature (it claims to go down to 32ºF). The best part: It features a little Bluetooth speaker to play music, perfect for listening to your favorite playlist while you get ready, plus a top handle for easier carrying.

FINISHING TOUCH Flawless Beauty Fridge

Flawless Beauty Fridge

The white glossy finish, included stickers and rose gold details definitely makes this mini fridge one of the cutest options to buy. The front door is inscribed with the word "Flawless," and is actually a dry-erase board so you can personalize your fridge or keep track of what's inside . The interior of this four-liter fridge opens to two shelves with one removable rack and a door-side basket for smaller beauty items. One Amazon reviewer says that it's a "perfect size for skincare and I've had it a couple [of] years and it still works perfect," though a few complained of condensation that collects at the bottom.

CROWNFUL Portable Cooler and Warmer Personal Fridge

Portable Cooler and Warmer Personal Fridge

Magically multifunctional, this mini fridge can keep things cool or warm with a simple flip of a switch. It has a removable shelf and is equipped with an AC power cord and a car cigarette lighter plug, making it perfect for those on the go, no matter where you need to keep products warm or cool. Multiple Amazon reviewers say it "gets colder than you think," and that the cooling function "works great." One warns, "it does make a little noise but it’s faint enough to it won’t disturb you too much when you are sleeping."

How we choose the best skincare fridges

"

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab tests thousands of beauty items every year, including beauty tools, makeup, hair products, skincare products and more. Though the Lab has not yet tested skincare fridges, Nicole Papantoniou , Director of the Kitchen Appliances and Technology Lab, regularly tests full-sized and miniature fridges throughout the year. Based on this, we gave preference to brands that performed well in past Lab tests. We also turned to board-certified dermatologists and beauty editors for their favorites. We took into account top-rated reviews and evaluated each pick for its capacity, footprint, features and extras, and considered any consumer gripes before making our selections.

What to look for when shopping for the best skincare fridge

"

To find the best skincare fridge for you, keep these factors in mind as you shop:

✔️ Size : You'll have to make sure you have the space for your new skincare fridge! Take a look at dimensions before buying, and compare its footprint with the capacity inside to ensure it suits your needs.

✔️ Capacity : Look at what products you have and how many you’re working with. A four-liter fridge can fit six 12-ounce cans, which is plenty of room for sleeker serum bottles of the same height, but if you have more skincare you're looking to store, go for a larger 6-liter or 10-liter option.

✔️ Temperature: Pay attention to how cold the fridge can get . Most skincare fridges tend to operate the same as mini portable fridges for food, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that foods be stored at 40ºF or below. "For beauty products, just make sure the fridge doesn't run below 32ºF so they don't freeze," Nicole says. Some fridges have adjustable temperature ranges and even warming capabilities, depending on your needs.

✔️ Brand : “It is wise to go with brand names that are well-established, or those newer brands that have [a] significantly high volume of user reviews,” says Brian Moore , M.D., a board-certified Cleveland, Ohio-based dermatologist and advisor to Illuminate Labs.

✔️ Adjustable shelving : "Look for fridges with removable shelves, as you can use these to customize the space," Nicole says. That way, you can ensure every product has a home.

✔️ Additional features: Keep in mind useful extras that suit your needs, like interior lighting, exterior mirrors for makeup and skincare application or additional power adapters for usage on the go.

What is a skincare fridge?

"

"A skincare fridge is a small fridge, typically only a few liters or the size of a six-pack of soda," Dr. Moore says. Skincare fridges can help maintain the stabilization of your products , particularly beauty products that don't contain preservatives, and create a therapeutic cooling sensation on skin that can help de-puff and reduce skin inflammation. Because the fridge allows you to keep your beauty items in one place, your skincare masks and serums become easily accessible and portable.

Do you really need a skincare fridge?

listicle

Since the majority of skincare products are created to be stored at room temperature without any issues, keeping skincare products in the fridge isn't expressly necessary unless a company advises it. So while most people probably don't need a skincare fridge, "storing some skincare products in the fridge can help protect the longevity and stability," Dr. Frieling says.

"Generally, refrigeration doesn't change the ingredients of the product, and it doesn't make them more or less effective," says Dr. Moore, but "if your skin is irritated, a soothing cream or mask can feel good. Aloe vera in particular that comes from the fridge is a cold relief for sunburnt skin."

What skincare items should be kept in a skincare fridge?

"

Products that can be stored in a skincare fridge include serums, masks, eye care, products with hydroquinone and vitamin C-based products , according to Dr. Thrower. "These products benefit from refrigeration because the cold enhances stability and minimizes oxidation, both causes for loss of power of their formulations," he says.

Dr. Moore adds that vitamin C serums and products get "the added benefit of protection from UV degradation" when you keep them in a skincare fridge because "it protects [Vitamin C] from light, which degrades by photochemical oxidation at 254nm." He also shares that face rollers, facial mists, essences and toners are safe to keep in your skincare fridge.

What items should not be kept in a skincare fridge?

listicle

A general rule of thumb is if the skincare product formula is thick, you may not want to store it in a mini fridge. “I do not recommend keeping products with high viscosity refrigerated as the cold will make them even thicker and it’ll be hard to squeeze them out of their bottles,” Dr. Thrower says.

Dr. Moore says you shouldn't keep any cosmetics in a mini fridge. “These are meant to be at room temperature or body temperature to be able to go on the skin smoothly and spread evenly,” he says. If you do apply these products straight out of the fridge, it may result in uneven coverage. Use your discretion, but you may want to keep things like your foundation and concealer at room temperature.

Does keeping skincare products in a fridge lengthen their life?

listicle

Nope, keeping beauty products in the fridge doesn't necessarily extend their shelf life, says Dr. Moore. However, Dr. Thrower argues that cooling your products can “maintain the potency.”

a pink skincare fridge

If you’ve scrolled through your favorite makeup artist’s Instagram lately or watched a handful of TikTok beauty influencer videos, then a skincare fridge might already be on your radar. Typically countertop appliance-sized and stocked with a bevy of colorful bottles, these mini refrigerators certainly look photo-op ready but are they actually useful? As it turns out, the answer is yes: A skincare fridge can be an easy way to store—and even extend the life of—some of your favorite products.

Skincare fridges can make your products work even better.

Beyond just extending freshness, refrigeration can also make the potential effects of certain products more pronounced, albeit temporarily. “Any skincare product that claims to be soothing, cooling, and anti-inflammatory may be more soothing and cooling if stored in a refrigerator,” says King. “For example, cooling face masks and anti-itch lotions with menthol may feel more soothing if they are cooled.” The same can be true for tools like jade rollers or products with metal-tip applicators, which you might find on an eye gel, for example, that’s intended to decrease puffiness. “When chilled, they can offer a cooling and soothing sensation and constrict blood vessels, which can decrease puffiness and redness ,” King adds.

If you use these types of products frequently or just treat self-care like a sport, King says you might benefit from the convenience a skincare fridge offers (though do know you can also dedicate a spare drawer or shelf in your kitchen fridge to beauty items, too, if you have the space). As you look for a model, try to find something more micro than mini-sized to sit on your vanity, dresser, or counter in your bedroom or bathroom without taking up too much space.

Skincare fridges should be between 45 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Most importantly, make sure your fridge can be set to a temperature between 45 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. “This temperature range maintains ideal consistency of products while reducing risk of growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast and decreasing risk of accelerated deactivation of active ingredients and preservatives,” says King. That said, anything colder could alter the consistency and texture of your products permanently, making them thicker and difficult to apply. Generally speaking, clay- and oil-based products and creams shouldn’t be refrigerated at all for this reason.

The Best Skin-Care Fridges to Keep Your Products Cool

By Leah Prinzivalli

three skincare fridges on orange background

Five years ago, the words "mini fridge" might have conjured images of dirty dorm rooms, dark basements, or a Tinder date's weird kitchen. But, as beauty lovers do best, we gave the mini fridge a makeover. Tiny refrigerators still make us think of six-packs — but now, it's a six-pack of sheet masks .

Skin-care devotees started noticing the the benefits of keeping products cool (more on that below). But since this community is nothing if not extra, we didn't want to stick a beloved moisturizer next to the cookie dough. Instead, skin-care fans are opting for a dedicated skin-care fridge (or #beautyfridge, as Instagram has dubbed the trend.) A fridge typically takes up about one square foot of desk (or vanity or bathroom or under-the-bed) space and will run between $50 and $150.

The whole setup is very photogenic and, if you follow beauty bloggers or even Allure editor-in-chief Michelle Lee, you'll notice how cute they look on Instagram. Plus, very importantly for those of us who have a lot of skin-care products, they also offer a whole new beauty storage space. But what does a skin-care fridge actually do for your routine?

"Generally, but not always, refrigerating products will help extend their shelf life," Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, previously told Allure . "Moreover, the cooling sensation on the skin from applying a refrigerated product may help calm itch and give a more soothing effect than a room-temperature product. This is likely because the cool temperature may calm over-firing nerves that lead to itch and discomfort in the skin."

Elizabeth Tanzi, founder and director of Capital Laser & Skin Care, previously pointed out to Allure that most products won't alter too much in the cold. For Tanzi, the only step of your skin-care routine worth refrigerating is an undereye cream. "The fact that it's cold helps to vasoconstrict and may help with puffiness," Tanzi explains. "Otherwise, I don't think there is much difference between room-temperature and cold products."

The experts agree that you don't need a skin-care fridge. But if you enjoy life's little luxuries — like an ice-cold jade roller on your puffy, swollen eyes — a skin-care fridge is still a worthy addition to your routine. In fact, Allure editor-in-chief Michelle Lee has multiple fridges both at home and at the office. "I was one of the earliest skin-care fridge fans because we've told people for years to chill sheet masks and rollers for extra cooling and de-puffing action," she says.

Lee's fridge is currently stocked with Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Cream , Peach & Lily Matcha Pudding Antioxidant Cream , and various and sundry sheet masks, face mists, and beauty tools.

As for her favorite fridge, Lee prefers the Cooluli range. "They make really high-quality — and cute — fridges that even come in colors like metallic gold," she says.

The new generation of mini fridges is intended for skin-care, but of course, you can still fill it with whatever you're in the mood to keep cool. There are approximately five skin-care fridges scattered around the Allure offices, and lots of them are stocked with snacks.

If you're looking for the cutest way to keep skin-care products cool, here are five of our favorite skin-care fridges to try:

Cool skincare products and tools offer both functional and cosmetic benefits, according to board-certified dermatologists Dr. Audrey Kunin , M.D. of DERMADoctor , Dr. Loretta Ciraldo , M.D. FAAD, of Dr. Loretta Skincare , and Dr. Hadley King , M.D., FAAD.

  • Calming: They help soothe irritation and minimize redness by constricting tiny blood vessels in your face, similar to the way that applying ice water to a burned area calms redness and discomfort.
  • Safe for sensitive skin: You can use cool skincare products when you have sensitive skin, rosacea , use an at-home chemical peel , or undergo a professional cosmetic procedure.
  • Goodbye swelling: Storing your eye creams for dark circles or undereye patches in a skincare fridge can help minimize puffiness.
  • Extend the lifespan of products: Using a skincare fridge can help prolong the life of delicate skincare actives, including retinol and benzoyl peroxide.
  • Stabilizes and improves product efficacy: Vitamin C , green tea, and hydroquinone turn brown very quickly once you start using them. Storing these skincare products in your fridge helps maintain higher stability and effectiveness.
  • Spa vibes: Cool skincare products feel incredibly refreshing on your face, elevating your mundane skincare routine into a spa-like ritual.

Which products should be in your skincare fridge?

As great as a skincare fridge is, you don't need to store every single beauty product and tool in there. Kunin does not recommend placing your oil-based products in a skincare fridge because they can solidify with cold exposure.

Outside of that, hydrating skincare products like face masks, face serums , face mists , and eye creams are fair game. Remember: Items containing vitamin C, green tea, benzoyl peroxide, and hydroquinone should be kept in your skincare fridge. It's also beneficial to store certain prescription topical treatments like retinol in there.

Here are seven standout skincare fridge options worth considering. Each product was carefully researched and selected by our beauty editor , who considered everything from expert guidance and price to storage space and overall functionality. She also analyzed the product reviews, and made sure to only include products that boast at least a 4-star average rating on their respective retail sites.

Frigidaire Portable Skincare Fridge

Portable Skincare Fridge

  • Storage space: 3 liters
  • Accessories: 2 power cords

Frigidaire's skincare fridge received the top spot on our list because of its low price, brand reputation, and chic, mid-century modern design.

This retro-inspired fridge features a mini window, silver hardware, and a roomy interior to store your larger skincare products and tools, like eczema creams and butt acne treatments .

Most skincare fridges keep your products cool between 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. However, Frigidaire's option can dip down to 27 degrees Fahrenheit, which is great for depuffing your face quickly.

Costing just under $37, you simply can't go wrong with storing your beauty essentials in this top-rated skincare fridge.

Speaking of traveling, you can even keep your skincare products (and your favorite water bottle ) chilled during road trips, since Chefman's fridge includes car and home outlet chargers.

What is the benefit of using a skincare fridge?

Applying cold skin care products not only feels good, they also temporarily tone the skin. Aguilera says applying a chilled face cream, eye cream and face mask constricts blood vessels, reduces redness and helps temporarily tighten pores. “Cold also has a draining, decongesting, soothing and firming effect on the skin,” she shares. The cold sensation is picked up by receptors in the skin, causing a chill “goosebump-like" phenomenon, which stimulates the nerve cells in the skin and has a tightening effect on the epidermis that makes skin look tighter and pores smaller.

What temperature does a skincare fridge need to be?

While it ultimately depends on the products you’re placing in your skincare fridge, keeping the temperature between 45 and 50 degrees is ideal.

What products should you put in one?

Water-based serums, toners, gels, vitamin c serums, sheet masks, eye creams, moisturizers, and retinol do best in a skincare fridge. Aguilar says these skincare products are found to show many benefits when exposed to cold temperatures. “Eye creams are especially best kept in the refrigerator,” she shares. Applying cold eye creams can help decrease puffiness, temporarily tighten the skin around the eye and make the eye look more awake and revitalized.

Aguilar adds that a beauty refrigerator is not limited to skincare products. Facial tools made of stone like rollers or cryo sticks are also best kept in the refrigerator.

What should you avoid doing with a skincare fridge?

When it comes to a skincare refrigerator, don't assume that it will extend the product’s shelf life. It’s important to stick to the shelf life listed on the product. Also, you need to know that not every skincare product can be refrigerated. Clay masks and products that contain oil can form crystals and start to solidify when subjected to cold temperatures.

What are the benefits of refrigerating skincare products?

faq line break

"If you store your products in the bathroom, they are susceptible to damage from shower steam," explains Akram. The idea is that some products can last longer when kept in the fridge, much like your food.

There's also the added benefit of some products feeling better when they're kept cold. "Applying chilled products helps with puffiness and swelling, soothes inflammation, and provides a firming effect on the skin," she adds.

What skincare products should (or shouldn't) be refrigerated?

"Depending on product formulation and how it is packaged, most toners, mists, serums, eye creams, and face masks (including sheet masks) are the most suitable products to be kept in a skincare fridge," Akram notes.

Some products shouldn't be stored in the fridge, however, as to not alter the texture. "Keep in mind most cream-based products with more dense formulations including serums, moisturizers and masks should not be chilled. This makes it more difficult to apply the product onto the skin. Oil-based products are also not suitable for the fridge as they can also harden," the esthetician adds.

Take Our Word For It

Skincare products are designed to make your skin feel and look its best, but sometimes temperature can add an extra sense of relief and relaxation, especially when it comes to facial areas. A skincare fridge allows you to keep beauty products like facial moisturizers , face masks , foot masks or peels , and tools at a cool temperature so they feel even more amazing when applied to your face. And some even have heating capabilities — but we’ll get to that!

“Cold temperatures can help preserve products like antioxidants longer, as can proper packaging, and often dark packaging that does not let light in,” NYU Langone Dermatological Surgeon Mary L. Stevenson, MD tells PEOPLE. Though Dr. Stevenson doesn’t personally use a skincare fridge, she’s familiar with these products, and says, “Cold creams and products often can be soothing to the skin and gently massaging under the eyes with a cold roller or cold cream can help with puffiness under the eyes.”

After speaking to several experts and researching the market, we’ve found the best skincare fridges available based on size, function, temperature settings, and storage capacity.

Read on for PEOPLE's picks for the best skincare fridges, as well as what to look for when buying.

Best Overall

Cooluli mini fridge.

Thanks to its spacious interior and multiple shelves, this is the ideal fridge for those who want to keep a variety of beauty products chilled and ready to use.

This fridge may not be ideal for anyone who doesn't want any condensation in the fridge.

“The Cooluli Mini Fridge is my go-to skin fridge,” esthetician and founder of SB Skin Shamara Bondaroff tells PEOPLE. Bondaroff is known for performing microcurrent facials and uses this beauty fridge to store tools and products. “The design is simple and chic, and it looks great in my microcurrent studio.” With multiple removable shelves and a spacious interior, it can function to fit many different skincare products, and you can organize it any way you like — take note from the Home Edit team’s restocking skills in this Instagram post .

“It’s also nicely sized — it features three shelves and holds all of my products, but it’s still compact enough to fit on a counter,” Bondaroff says. “My favorite feature about this fridge is that it has a wide temperature range so you can really dial in how cold you prefer your products.” Some users did critique mild condensation toward the back of the unit, but temperature naturally fluctuates, so it’s not unreasonable that this would be the case. With warming and cooling capabilities, this beauty fridge is versatile for many types of products and tools, and it won’t soon break — forged by aluminum, plastic, and tempered glass. For good measure, there’s also a spring lock on the door handle for extra security in case you bring this fridge on the go since the handle makes it quite portable.

This fridge is great for anyone who wants a reliable skincare fridge that's portable and energy-efficient.

This may not be the right fridge for anyone who wants a fancier model that has smart tech, more storage or shelving, and locks.

With three sections to store skincare and beauty tools, this whimsical little fridge is a fun addition to any beauty space. While it may not have fancy technology, this Crownful skincare fridge is efficient in its simplicity. With six bright colors like a retro mint green, calming sky blue, and Barbiecore pink , this fridge will fit into any aesthetic and preserve your products for longer than they would last sitting in the back of your dresser drawer.

Though minimalistic with a single shelf, this fridge is both energy-efficient and 100 percent freon-free, meaning no questionable gas near all your beauty essentials (we love an unproblematic fridge!). It has cooling and warming capabilities, though we caution against using the warming feature unless you’re sure the products you’re storing are intended to be stored and used hot. The best part is its portability — with an AC power cord, car charger, and handle, you can bring this fridge with you to cool your skincare supply on the go.

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 6 | Dimensions: 5.32 x 5.52 x 7.88 inches | Storage: One shelf, door bin

Best Compact

Personal chiller portable mini fridge.

This is a great choice for those in dorms or small apartments who want to keep their skincare on the rocks.

This may not be ideal for those who need more space for their products than a 4-liter fridge can allow.

Tight spaces like dorm rooms or small apartments don’t offer much counter space, which is why it's important to go for something small like the Personal Chiller skincare fridge for all of your beauty needs. This baby pink shelf clocks in at just under 5 and a half inches wide on the inside and has one removable shelf that can separate the inner compartment into sections, which can hold the equivalent of six soda cans: two on top and four on the bottom. Stock up with your favorite eye serums and beauty tools or add your favorite drink inside — the choice is yours (so long as the products are on the smaller side). And best of all, it’s freon-free!

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 1 | Dimensions: 9.6 x 10.7 x 7 inches | Storage: One removable shelf

Lvara Smart Mini Skincare Fridge

This is the ideal pick for someone who wants to control individual features like temperature, shelf-life reminders, and frost prevention.

This may not be the right fridge for someone looking for a more portable option.

This beauty fridge has all the components of smart tech with a contemporary design. You can use an app on your phone to control the temperature, noise level, and modes, as well as be reminded when certain products expire. With nine liters of space, this is a roomy fridge with plenty of storage for tall, medium, and smaller products, such as lip scrubs , and even has a sleeve attached to the lid to store sheet masks.

You can either use the standard mode, the smart mode (which lets you schedule sleep times and adjust the noise level during that period), or night mode (a lower decibel noise level). Due to the size, this fridge isn’t portable but would fit seamlessly on a makeup desk or vanity. And with three stunning colors to choose from — emerald green, blush pink, and a muted white, it’ll be a statement piece wherever it lives in your home.

Capacity: 9 liters | Colors: 3 | Dimensions: 7.6 x 15.2 x 8.9 inches | Storage: Two vertical sections

Best for Vanity

Frigidaire portable retro mini fridge.

This mini fridge is ideal for anyone who loves a vintage design and needs a compact appliance to hold their beauty supplies.

Since this is a simple skincare fridge, this may not be the best pick for those who want more features.

For lovers of all things retro, this Frigidaire mini beauty fridge serves major throwback vibes. While simple in design — one shelf, two sections for storage — this fridge is super compact, making it ideal for placement on a vanity or even bathroom counter so it’s close by when you’re applying skincare and makeup. It comes in five unique colors that all tie into the vintage theme and maintain a steady temperature with a thermoelectric cooling system. There’s also a lock on the door to keep your items secure so they don’t fall out, should you take this fridge on a trip — the handle and included adapters make it portable.

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 5 | Dimensions: 10 x 10 x 7 inches | Storage: One shelf

Best Portable

Caynel mini fridge cooler and warmer.

This is a great pick for anyone who likes to chill and warm their products.

Since it's not super deep, this may not be the best option for anyone who needs a larger fridge to store a bunch of products.

Built for the road or wherever you go, this compact fridge is ideal for traveling with your beauty essentials. It has a handle for carrying on top and comes with plugs for standard outlets and car chargers so you can use it on the go. The thermoelectric system allows for cooling temperatures of 40 to 45 degrees below the temperature of the room it’s stored in, and warming temps of 122 to 144 degrees. You can change settings by simply flipping a switch, and the insulated interior can hold the temperature even after the fridge is unplugged. This fridge is highly energy efficient, freon-free, and super quiet. It's not super deep, so this may not be the best choice for anyone who needs to store a lot of products at once.

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 7 | Dimensions: 7.2 x 9.95 x 10.83 inches | Storage: One shelf, door bin

Best Double-Door

Homcom portable skincare fridge.

This is a great pick for those who want a mini fridge with the most shelf space.

This mini fridge might be too large for someone who has less storage space available.

If you’re all about glamor when it comes to your beauty routine, then you’ll love the grandeur of the Homcom Portable Skincare Fridge. This rounded-edged mini refrigerator opens up in the center to reveal double doors stocked with shelving with space for your favorite lip products and a sectioned-off interior that can house everything from nail polish to serums and eye creams.

We appreciate the 12 liters of space that you get in this fridge, allowing you to store not only your favorite skincare products but also your favorite chilled tools, like gua shas and jade rollers. Though you don’t necessarily need to keep your favorite lipstick at a cool temperature, it’s nice to know that you have the organizational space for your go-to shades. Keep in mind that if you don't have ample free space, this might not be the right fridge for you. Choose from three electronic modes (constant temperature, night mute, and energy-saving) and watch as the controlled temperature reflects on the digital display in front of this high-tech fridge.

Capacity: 12 liters | Colors: 2 | Dimensions: 10.75 x 10.75 x 17.5 inches | Storage: In-door shelving, one bin, organizational compartments

Koolatron Retro Mini Portable Fridge

This is a great pick for anyone who wants a small but stylish portable mini fridge.

Because it can only accommodate up to 4 liters of products, this might not be the best pick for those who want to store a lot of items.

They say that everything old is new again, and that couldn’t be truer for this vintage-inspired mini fridge that comes in pastel pink, aqua blue, and classic black shades. Enthusiasts of styles past will love this appliance for its antique-looking chrome features and kitschy colors, all of which call back the aesthetics of the ‘70s with a bit of 2020s flair.

This mini style is short in stature but quite deep, allowing you to house several bottles and jars inside without cramping your style. Better yet, the shelf inside is removable so you can place larger items like hairspray inside. However, it’s definitely not the largest organizational fridge on our list, housing up to only 4 liters, which means you may want to opt for a larger model if you have more products that need refrigeration.

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 3 | Dimensions: 6.8 x 7 x 10 inches | Storage: One removable shelf

Best with Heat Mode

Astroai mini fridge.

This is a great pick for anyone who needs a quiet, portable mini fridge.

This might not be the right choice for those who need to store large quantities of products.

Obviously, most beauty fridges are intended to cool products and tools, but this one has the capability to heat up to 150 degrees, meaning you can utilize the hot mode too. While there are many products that should not be heated, we have a few suggestions. You could use this feature to warm up damp wash clothes to steam your face prior to applying a face mask. And while you shouldn’t store oils or clay products when the fridge is cold because it can affect the consistency, the hot mode (used responsibly) can be a good way to warm up hair oils and clay masks , for instance. This fridge is quiet, portable, freon-free, and reasonably priced, so if you’re looking for a compact and versatile beauty fridge, this one’s your guy.

Capacity: 4 liters | Colors: 6 | Dimensions: 9.45 x 6.9 x 10 inches | Storage: One removable shelf

Best with Whiteboard

This is a great fridge for those who need a lot of storage space as it holds 15 liters.

This mini fridge may not be ideal for someone who lacks available space as it's one of the larger models on our list.

One of the first things we do in the morning is apply our skincare, so why not leave yourself a little note the next time you go to polish off? Not only does this fridge have considerable storage (15 liters) and organization (two removable shelves and in-door baskets), but you can leave yourself little reminders to remind yourself of what’s important as you go to prep yourself for the day. Whether that be reminders, important notes, or daily words of affirmation, you’ll find yourself smiling as you see the note you or a loved one left you the night before. As this is one of the larger models on our list, this mini fridge might not be ideal if you have limited available space.

Capacity: 15 liters | Colors: 2 | Dimensions: 10.5 x 12.75  x 14.75 inches | Storage: 2 removable shelves, 2 container baskets

Best Storage

Facetory portable beauty fridge.

This is a great pick for someone who wants to store tall products and large beauty tools.

Since it has only one removable shelf, this fridge isn't ideal for anyone who needs to store many small beauty products.

While this beauty fridge is still relatively small, it’s quite spacious for storage with 10 liters of space to work with. It comes with one shelf which you can place toward the top to store small jars of moisturizers and sheet masks while placing tall products beneath such as facial mists, serums, and face rollers. With a temperature ranging around 41 to 48 degrees (the lowest setting at 32 degrees), this fridge is ideal for storing skincare and beauty products to treat your face to a cool refresh.

Capacity: 10 liters | Colors: 2 | Dimensions: 9.64 x 11.41 x 13.38 inches | Storage: One removable shelf, door bin

Best with Window

The beauty spy mini fridge.

This is ideal for anyone who wants a miniature version of a vintage-style fridge.

This fridge is not right for someone who needs a larger option with more shelves.

This compact, lightweight fridge is ideal to take on the go. It has a convenient carrying handle and weighs just under 4 pounds, so it’s extremely portable. The vintage style is fun, and the color is super cute, plus, it even includes stickers so you can add your own decorative touch. There's a small oval window in the front of the fridge as well as a stylish metal handle and hinges. It doesn't use freon, and it has a temperature range of 46 to 55 degrees for chilling and can heat up to 130 degrees. It only has one shelf, but if you’re not storing a ton of products, this little fridge may be just the right size.

Capacity: Not listed | Colors: 1 | Dimensions:  9.64 x 11.41 x 13.38 inches | Storage: One removable shelf

Best for Organization

Koudera portable fridge.

This mini fridge is ideal for those who like having a window to view their skincare collection.

This fridge is a bit large and may not be suitable for someone with limited space.

This mini fridge from KOUDERA has 15 liters of storage — so there is lots of room to store all your skincare products. It has a removable shelf in the middle of the fridge and a basket in the door for taller items. It also has a tall window, so you can see which products you have and which you’re running low on. Since it weighs 10 pounds, it’s a bit heavy to tote around regularly, but it does include both an AC wall plug and a DC 12V adapter that will work in a vehicle. This versatile, freon-free skincare fridge also can cool your products to 32 degrees or warm them up to 150 degrees.

Capacity: 15 liters | Colors: 1 | Dimensions: 12.7 x 16.9 x 11.4 inches | Storage: One removable shelf, basket in door

How to Pick the Right Skincare Fridge

Temperature.

The most important consideration of a skincare fridge is the temperature. “Cold temperatures can help preserve products like antioxidants longer, as can proper packaging, and often dark packaging that does not let light in,” NYU Langone dermatological surgeon Mary L. Stevenson, MD tells PEOPLE. A colder temperature can even improve the performance of your skincare products in the long run. “Controlling the temperature of your fridge also lends itself to easier product application and absorption as it not only preserves the formulation but keeps the texture of your product intact,” says Bondaroff. Smart fridges like our Lvara pick even allow you to control the temperature when you’re not home.

You should consider the overall size of the skincare fridge, especially depth and height so you can determine which products will fit. For storing taller items like serums, cleansers, or beauty tools like a jade roller, you’ll want a taller beauty fridge or one with a removable shelf or two (like the Cooluli Mini Fridge ) to give you more space. For short and wide items like tubs of moisturizer, flat sheet masks, or eye treatments, having a skincare fridge with more depth and multiple shelves will help you fit more products.

The type of skincare fridge you buy should obviously take into account what you’re planning to store and how you want to use the fridge. If you use a lot of skincare products and tools, you should look for features that will aid the longevity and efficacy of each product (bearing in mind ingredients and consistency). Though Dr. Stevenson doesn’t personally use a skincare fridge, she’s familiar with these products, and says, “Cold creams and products often can be soothing to the skin and gently massaging under the eyes with a cold roller or cold cream can help with puffiness under the eyes.”

If you travel with your makeup, then a portable skincare fridge — like the Caynel Mini Fridge — will allow you to keep products fresh and nearby regardless of where you are. And for products that need warming, you can look for skincare fridges with heating capabilities — like the Astro AI Mini Fridge — just make sure to follow instructions closely to avoid heating products that are not intended to be used warm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Per our expert, it’s less about the product type and more about the ingredients and consistency. “Zooming out a bit, if you tend to gravitate towards cleaner products formulated without preservatives, a skincare fridge is for you,” says Bondaroff. “Other products like vitamin C for example — that tend to oxidize when exposed to light, warm[th], and moisture — also sit well in skincare fridges. You should always consider the formula and the product’s consistency before storing it in the fridge (or not). Products that have lighter consistencies like water- and gel-based moisturizers or serums usually live happily in a fridge. Similarly, products with 'active' levels of skincare ingredients or botanicals do well in the fridge, too."

Both experts agree that oils are a no-go. “Extremely thick creams, facial oils that have the potential to separate, and clay-based products are not best suited for a skincare fridge as it can alter the consistency of the product,” Bondaroff says. Dr. Stevenson echoes this sentiment, saying face oils should not be refrigerated.

Yes and no. “I love storing my beauty tools in the fridge,” Bondaroff shares. “I keep my gua sha, jade roller, and any other lymph-moving, de-puffing tools on my fridge shelves. Chilling your tools doesn’t necessarily make them any more or less effective; however, a colder temperature can aid in extra de-puffing and soothing.” It’s sort of a placebo effect, because cooler tools feel better on your face, which can give you a sense of refreshment no matter what’s happening at the cellular level. “I like to keep my tools in the fridge simply because it makes for the most relaxing experience,” she says.

Yes, you can store moisturizers in the fridge. “I recommend keeping water-based or gel-based moisturizers in the fridge,” says Bondaroff. “Products that feature a jelly-like or watery consistency do well there as it helps to preserve texture, efficacy, and consistency. They also feel like an extra cooling and soothing treat after sitting in the fridge!”

DIY: Dedicate a Compartment to Your Skincare Products

Diy: use a plastic container as a fridge insert, diy: decant your products, diy: adapt a bar fridge.

Storing skincare and beauty products in cool, dry places is not a new advancement in the world of self-care. It is widely known that beauty products contain formulas with delicate molecular compounds. While some of these formulas are preserved using chemicals, others are not. And keeping said products in temperature sensitive environments is the key to ensuring their longevity.

While your dark bathroom cupboard is usually suitable for makeup storage and skincare products, a trend of keeping these items in one’s refrigerator emerged decades ago. Dedicating a shelf in the fridge to all cosmetics became a common practice once the lasting results in doing so became evident.

In the same way photographers store film in the fridge, skincare lovers do so with the intention of keeping the products fresher for longer. To cater to such a demand, mini beauty fridges started to be manufactured by brands quick enough to spot the gap in the market.

Why walk all the way to your kitchen every morning when you can have a miniature beauty fridge right there in your bedroom or bathroom?

A skin care fridge, or cosmetic refrigerator, is a tiny, cheeky looking device that is smaller than most handbags. You may remember years back, when Coca Cola made a range of small refrigerators that could hold between 6 and twelve 12-ounce cans. It was all the rage to have a Coca Cola fridge in your bedroom; your cold drinks within reach at all times.

Brands such as Red Bull followed suit, and their transparent, branded miniature refrigerators can still be spotted filled with product, standing next to the DJ’s turntables at events that they sponsor.

A skincare refrigerator is no different, only they rarely go larger than the ability to fit six 12-ounce cans in size. This is usually adequate for the holding of serums, face creams and toners. Most skin fridges can fit snugly on a bookshelf, or tucked neatly in the corner of your vanity cabinet.

The short answer to this question is both yes and no. In other words, it largely depends on the products and environments in question.

skincare fridge tour

The main goal when it comes to storing skincare products in fridges is to extend the lifespan of the product in question. Just as we keep food cold in order to extend its freshness and edibility, so do we keep beauty products cold to extend their freshness and usability.

Experts maintain that skincare products should only be refrigerated if the fridge user is able to ensure that the device’s temperature never drops below 32ºF. Anything colder than this will cause many beauty products to freeze over; remember, face creams and toners are far less dense than regular foods.

There are little to no skincare brands that make products under the requirement that they be refrigerated once opened. There will be a few specialty products, usually with rare or active ingredients, that might come with a recommendation of refrigeration if possible — but these are not your everyday, drugstore purchases.

We spoke with Adina Mahalli, a hair and skincare expert, who said that “the theory behind a skincare fridge is that it works to keep your products cool and preserved. However, the truth is that any product on the market has had to undergo stability testing, meaning it won’t decompose at room temperature and will be usable for a significant amount of time. With this in mind, unless the product was sold in a refrigerator, there’s little reason to keep it one after opening.”

Desireé Delia, a Licensed Esthetician in NYC, adds “skincare fridges are fun, cute and a little luxury condo for our skincare products. Now, with that being said, the majority if not all of the skincare products (unless specified otherwise) out there are designed and made to be sustainable at room temperature. Does the fridge make the products work better? No. Does it feel nice to put chilled under eye cream on your eyes when you’ve had little sleep and your eyes are swollen? Yes. When it comes down to it, the skincare fridge is a choice not a requirement.”

Some people argue that while they understand they might not need to refrigerate their products, they often prefer to. There is reason to believe that using chilled beauty products can actually positively affect your skin.

There is a reason why some people make a point of holding frozen stainless steel spoons over their eye sockets every morning; the cold causes blood vessels to constrict and puffiness to be reduced.

Using cold skincare products has a similar effect on the skin that it comes into contact with. A firmer and tighter appearance is possible, especially if cold products are applied after a hot shower, when pores are wide open.

Objects used on the skin, such as jade rollers, can also be kept in the fridge (or freezer) so that it is cold in temperature upon use. Rolling chilled jade stone over your face first thing in the morning will help seal all applied products into the layers of the skin.

Likewise, if you’re someone who receives regular facials, peels or skin needling, you might find applying your products cold for a few days afterward helps to soothe the disrupted, inflamed skin.

It’s safe to say that the global movement toward more natural beauty products has definitely fueled the skincare refrigerator industry to some degree.

For years, researchers have been bringing the risks and side effects of certain chemicals to our attention. Ingredients such as parabens, silicone and types of alcohol are common in store-bought self-care products; all of which have ties to respiratory diseases, infertility, and even cancer.

So customers began demanding more natural formulas featuring ingredients derived from harmless botanicals with zero health risks. Natural face moisturizers , natural shampoos and natural lip gloss are but three examples of a broad spectrum of makeup and beauty products now being made toxin-free.

The thing is, when natural skincare products don’t use chemicals to keep them from rotting, then one has to turn to the external environment. In order to keep a body lotion from growing mold, for example, manufacturers would normally fill the formula with parabens that act as a preservative; killing off bacteria and preventing any new life from growing over time.

A plant based body lotion obviously says a hard “no!” to parabens, but that means the formula is at higher risk of bacterial growth and slow rot — it’s simply how nature progresses.

As we know, one of the most natural and effective ways of delaying a product from ‘going off’, is to simply control its external environment. Rotting is accelerated when the temperature of the environment is warm and damp; another reason why customers are always encouraged to store their skincare products somewhere cool and dry.

If you live in a significantly warmer climate, like on an island or near the equator, your bathroom cupboard likely won’t cut it when it comes to keeping your personal products at a sustainable temperature. An obvious compromise would be to keep them in the fridge!

A skincare mini fridge offers customers an easily accessible spot in which to keep their natural products from forming ecosystems of their own over time. Look at it as an investment that eventually pays for itself, and then some: your days of purchasing replacement products due to early expiration will become a thing of the past.

Skincare Products that Should Not Be Refrigerated

skincare fridge tour

Make no mistake, there are an array of do’s and don’ts when it comes to using a beauty refrigerator. Should you neglect to do any prior research on what your products need in terms of ideal storage, you could end up spoiling some prematurely.

As mentioned, skincare products should never be held in a fridge that is lower than 32ºF in temperature. Anything less than this will cause even fridge-safe products to freeze over simply because they are so thin.

Ironically, natural beauty products are, by formula, the products that need refrigeration most. However they are also the products that can’t always take the heat… or cold, rather.

Any skincare or makeup product that is made using a carrier oil such as coconut oil, almond oil or grapeseed oil, is not suitable for refrigeration. Even at room temperature, coconut oil solidifies, which is not ideal when found in a product that needs to be easily spread, such as body lotion.

Even if the oil doesn’t solidify completely, like with almond oil, the coldness of the fridge might cause a noticeable change in texture in your product.

Clay is a common base ingredient for face masks and exfoliators. Found in both natural and chemical beauty products, clay can rarely handle consistently cold environments. Clay in the cold turns somewhat to stone, soaking up any trace of moisture in the process.

You’ll have to use a metal spoon or spatula to break through the substance once it solidifies like this in the fridge, and you may also need to rehydrate the formula by adding a liquid such as water, apple cider vinegar or honey.

Serums are hard to gage when it comes to refrigeration. It depends solely on the formula of the serum in question.

As a general rule, serums that are sensitive to heat and light are usually packaged in dark bottles or tinted glass, offering a layer of protection. These serums can usually always be stored in a fridge; Vitamin C and retinoids are included.

Serums in transparent packaging aren’t easily affected by light and heat, and perhaps even use it to their benefit to maintain their consistency. One should double check before putting these into a mini makeup fridge as it could affect that consistency that is relying on room temperature.

When using a fridge for skincare product storage it is imperative that all products have the ability to properly seal.

Fridges, particularly regular sized ones intended for food, harbor a plethora of food-derived bacterias whose sole intention is to multiply, multiply, multiply. Cross contamination between food and skincare products is possible — even common!

Of course, these bacterias can only do their thing if they can get inside of the product in question. A body lotion with a broken cap, for example, is not suitable for refrigeration. Take the time to fashion a new cap out of cling wrap, or transfer the lotion into a sealable jar, before placing it into a fridge. The same goes for any other skincare or makeup product.

Most of the time we can’t see when our makeup or skincare products have been infiltrated by food bacterias, but we see the effects physically when suddenly our usually gentle, effective face cream is giving us acne or rashes.

Well, ensuring the longevity of the skincare products in which you invest your hard earned money is an untenable benefit; especially since cosmetic fridges are such minor investments themselves. As we said earlier, they pay themselves off via the money they save you on replacing spoiled products.

Spoiled beauty products are not something to be taken lightly. It’s also important to acknowledge that a self-care product doesn’t need to display mold visible to the eye in order for it to qualify as “rotten”.

If you’ve ever done a spring clean of your personal belongings and uncovered products that have slightly hardened, or changed in scent, then you’ve encountered spoiled, rotten products. Beauty products don’t look like a moldy sandwich when they rot; they look like texture compromised formulas and often have questionable or potent aromas.

skincare fridge tour

This is why so many people end up using spoiled skincare products even after the safety window has long gone; they simply don’t look as threatening as they are. In reality, the bacteria in the products is alive and well, and is very happy to move into a new habitat… your skin.

Irritation, acne and even nausea are symptoms associated with the use of skincare products that have not been preserved over time. The use of a skincare fridge can help reduce the risk of absorbing spoiled products, while offering the benefit of extended shelf life in the process.

Gabby Abascal, a Licensed Esthetician , says “skincare fridges are cute and fun! And if they get my clients to use their products more frequently then most definitely I do recommend them. Skincare fridges are not necessary but they are a good motivator for taking care of your skin. They’re like a new toy in your bathroom counter that you’re going to want to play with regularly.”

For individuals who reside in those warmer climates, makeup refrigerators give them the opportunity to use certain ingredients in their beauty regime that they usually may not be able to. Shea butter, for example, is one of the most nutrient dense natural moisturizers that we can use on the human body. However, if held in a vanity cabinet of a desert town, the butter melts into an undesirable oil.

Finally, there is something to be said about skin care fridges and the convenience that they bring to individuals who are already making use of their kitchen fridge to store their personal products.

We don’t know of anyone who enjoys having to trek between bathroom and kitchen every time they want to apply their self-care routine. For a lot of people, this occurs twice a day, and venturing back and forth is a logistical inconvenience. A skincare fridge keeps all of your products within reach while offering the same cooling benefits that your trusty kitchen unit was.

Skincare fridges weren’t just brought about to solve the problem of convenience; there is a targeted science behind them as well.

Regular household fridges sit at an average low of between 32ºF and 40ºF. These temperatures are just fine for most skincare products; any lower than 32ºF and most will start to freeze over. The trouble is that most household fridges experience what is known as frosting.

Frosting is that layer of ice that slowly forms across the back panel of the fridge walls. Anti-frost technology was introduced to the refrigerator market a few years ago, but most people own fridges that supersede this advancement and still experience the dreaded frost.

The frosting brings the inner temperature of the fridge down quite significantly. You might notice certain fruits and vegetables will even freeze over if they are situated too close to the back of the fridge. This is why defrosting your fridge/freezer ends up being a repeated event.

In these instances, storing skincare products in a regular fridge is no longer an option. The inside temperature will often drop below 32ºF, causing the products to freeze over in the process.

With miniature skincare fridges the science has allowed for the units to maintain an all-time low of 32ºF, never less. They offer anti-frost technology so that your temperature balance will not be compromised over time, and you’ll never have to spend a day scraping ice off of the back wall.

Because of their size, skincare fridges find it very easy to self-regulate. The cooling system is focusing on a very small, limited zone, as opposed to a full-sized fridge where the system has to fluctuate in order to move the cold from top to bottom.

This next point is left to speculation, but it is possible that manufacturers worked with refrigerator engineers to choose the perfect size for these compact units. As we noted earlier, skincare fridges are smaller than most handbags, and some actually feature a nifty carrier handle on the top panel. It is possible to use these devices as your primary means of transporting your skincare products whilst heading on a road trip or weekend away, as it would take up relatively the same amount of space to repack the products into a separate carrier bag.

Skincare Products that Need Refrigeration

Determining which skincare products need refrigeration, and which don’t, can feel like a daunting endeavor. Any skincare enthusiast will tell you that this initial overwhelm does subside once you become more familiar with the array of ingredients on offer and how they respond to cold versus hot — and then you’ll simply store your products accordingly.

These are the skincare products you are most likely to encounter than can greatly benefit from being refrigerated:

Any botanically derived beauty or makeup product needs a cool and dark environment in which to sustain its longevity. Ensure that said products are free of coconut oil and shea butter before storing in the fridge.

There are a lot of skin care enthusiasts who swear by using essential oils on the face and body.

When it comes to essential oils, it’s not so much about warm versus cool as it is about temperature consistency. Essential oils see most of their decay in climates where temperatures change in extremes throughout the day: for example, cold mornings, sweltering afternoons, and chilly evenings.

By keeping essential oils in the fridge, the leaps in temperature changes are eliminated, and the oils can sit at a single temperature at all times. Citrus derived essential oils are the most easily oxidized of the lot, and this always happens as a result of temperature ups and downs.

Any serum or skincare product that claims to be rich in Vitamin C should always be stored in the fridge. Like the citrus essential oils, Vitamin C oxidizes quite easily.

Keeping these products in the fridge reduces their exposure to oxygen, and therefore limiting just how much oxidation can take place.

Gels tend to lose their elasticity over time when stored at room temperature. By placing them into the fridge you are ensuring their extended shelf life, while also giving the product a one up when it comes to effectiveness. Everyone knows that chilled gels are more beneficial when applied to the skin!

Note that we said spray sunscreen, not all sunscreen.

Warmer environments actually weaken the SPF factors in sunblock. This is why you should never leave your sunscreen laying out on your beach towel or picnic blanket.

You can ensure the strength of the SPF by storing unopened or partially used sunscreens in the fridge, provided they have a spray function. Cream based sunscreens need to be kept at room temperature as they have a higher risk of solidifying on account of how thick they are already.

Few people realize that a mini makeup fridge comes in handy for one’s personal fragrances as well.

Most people keep their perfumes and fragrances out on a dresser, displayed where they can be seen and admired. The truth is, even at room temperature, perfumes are being broken down and their potency of scent greatly affected.

Storing your perfume in a refrigerator is said to increase the lifespan of a scent by up to three times.

Aloe technically counts as a gel, but it is also a very natural plant derivative that is most beneficial when it is cooled.

Any skincare product that contains aloe as an active ingredient should be stored in a refrigerator; this includes aftersun products.

DIY: How to Store Skincare Products in a Regular Fridge

We get it — not everyone can afford to invest in a second fridge just to hold their skincare routine.

The truth is that a regular fridge works just fine, so long as you take the necessary precautions to keep cross contamination from occurring. The following are some great ways of doing so.

Most household fridges are made up of inner compartments and shelving. Dedicating a compartment, or shelf, to your range of skincare products is a great way of keeping them out of proximity to harmful food bacterias.

Some fridges boast a compact shelf in the door panel that is intended to hold cheese and dairy products. This shelf usually has a retractable plastic cover that keeps these products from interacting with the rest of the atmosphere going on inside of the fridge.

This can be a great place to store your skincare products as it is somewhat separated from the rest of the refrigerator.

Just as you would store last night’s leftovers, so too can you store your range of skincare products. Invest in a sizable container with a sealable lid that can hold all of your fridge-destined products.

The container acts as a barrier between your products and the food bacterias floating around the inner environment. The products will be kept cold in the fridge without being compromised by cross contamination.

This is also great because you’ll no longer have to fish around the fridge for individual products. Instead, simply pull the entire container out, use what you need, and return it to its designated shelf.

Individuals with children who are likely to move things in the fridge around will also benefit greatly from having everything in their own container. Consider marking it “do not touch!”.

If you’re not confident in the seals of your skincare products, consider decanting them into sterile jars of suitable sizes.

Glass jars can be purchased in sizes suited from the smallest serums through to the largest body lotions. Storing food in jars is a process known for its ability to preserve and retain nutrients, while protecting from external bacterial threats — the same goes for your skincare products.

If you’re not sold on having your face cream in the fridge alongside your fruits and veggies, consider adapting a different household fridge if you have access to one.

Bar fridges make great alternatives as they are usually used to store already sealed items such as canned drinks and syrups.

These are naturally less bacterially dense environments, and skincare products will experience little to no cross contamination while living inside of them.

The lowest shelf on the door of a bar fridge makes for the best spot in which to store skincare products. You want the products to be as far away from the built-in freezer as possible. Never let the freezer of your bar fridge become overgrown with frost whilst your skincare products are inside!

While the concept of a skincare mini fridge may sound overly indulgent, there are tons of upsides to having one at home. For starters, keeping your skincare products in colder temperatures may increase their shelf life, which means you get to hold on to the ones you don’t use on daily (like that exfoliating toner, for example) a bit longer. Using products that have been refrigerated may also help tamp down puffiness and give you an immediate glow thanks to the boost in circulation you get from the cold. And who doesn’t want that? That’s why we’ve compiled a list of 16 skincare mini fridges you can buy below. From more compact options you can easily plop on your vanity, to more robust offerings that can even fit some beverages, there’s plenty to choose from.

6 Skincare Trends We’re Adding to Our Beauty Regimen in 2022

What to look for in a skincare mini fridge

Beyond the fact that they’re so darn cute to look at, there are some specifics you want to consider when buying a mini fridge:

1. Temperature. Skincare mini fridges come in varying temperatures. Keep in mind that you don’t want to store your products below 32°F, otherwise, they’ll freeze. Anywhere between 40° to 60°F is the sweet spot, as it’s still colder than room temperature, but not too frigid.

2. Size. Just because it says “mini” doesn’t guarantee it’ll fit in your space. You want to make sure you have a fridge that stores your products without taking over your entire bathroom counter.

3. Portability. If you know that you’re going to be using your mini fridge at home, then portability isn’t something you need to worry about. But if you, like much of America, have been bitten by the wanderlust bug and you want a fridge that can come along with you on trips, look for a mini fridge that comes with a carrying handle and is compatible with car chargers.

5 Beauty Products That Are More Effective When Chilled

Because stashing your skincare in the fridge is really cool.

skincare fridge tour

Haley is a Wisconsin-based creative freelancer and recent graduate. She has worked as an editor, fact checker, and copywriter for various digital and print publications. Her most recent position was in academic publishing as a publicity and marketing assistant for the University of Wisconsin Press

If you've ever wondered whether or not there's any legitimacy to the mini skincare fridges that are all the rage on social media, we're here to tell you that, yes, there is. To be fair, you definitely don't need a separate refrigerator for your beauty products (though it does make a great gift). And there's also not necessarily a pressing need to refrigerate products in general. That being said, there definitely are some major benefits to keeping your skincare stash—at least some of it—chilled.

Why? It's simple. "Cold temperatures constrict blood vessels, which can decrease both puffiness and redness, and enhance the soothing sensation of products," explains Hadley King , MD, board-certified dermatologist in New York City. As a general rule of thumb, "any type of cream- or gel-based product can be kept in the fridge," says Marina Peredo , MD, board-certified dermatologist in New York City. On the flip side, avoid sticking anything oil-based in there. These types of products will solidify, which can both affect the potency and cause the formula to separate, she notes.

Here are five of the best products to house next to your coffee creamer and salad dressing.

Dr. Peredo says eye creams are one of the best products to keep cold. Chilling your eye cream can go a long way in helping combat puffy eyes, she explains. Pretty much any type of formula can go into the fridge (oh, and eye patches can, too), but if you really want to maximize the effects, seek out one that contains a metal rollerball applicator tip, adds Dr. King. Metal conducts cold well, so you'll get even more of those benefits, and the massaging motion from the rollerball helps to further push out the excess fluid that leads to puffiness.

One to try : FAB Bounce-Boosting Serum with Collagen + Peptides

Face Roller

Again, a similar concept applies as the aforementioned eye cream—a chilled roller will work even better than one that's room temp. It's an ideal way to quickly depuff your entire face (we love using one after a late night out). And while Dr. Peredo says you shouldn't keep skincare products in the freezer, this type of tool is the exception to that rule.

Our recommendation : Keep Esarora Ice Roller , an Amazon fan favorite, in your freezer at all times.

Skin-Soothing Mask

"Any skincare product that claims to be soothing, cooling, or anti-inflammatory is going to be even more so when stored in a refrigerator," says Dr. King. And if you want to up the ante, look for soothing, gel-based formulas . These have a higher content of water than their cream counterparts and innately feel cooler and more refreshing, especially when they're kept in the fridge. Point being, a chilled, gel-based, soothing mask is a surefire way to calm and quell an irritated complexion, be it after a day of too much sun, some kind of reaction, or just generally stressed skin.

Our fave: SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Masque , which works especially well to calm skin after procedures such as microneedling or lasers.

Post-Injection Arnica Treatment

Speaking of post-procedure, "you can also chill arnica to help with post-injection bruising," says Dr. Peredo. The herb is already meant to help combat bruises, but when it's chilled you get even more of those vasoconstricting benefits that can help with that and any potential swelling, too. It's why this is a choice option post-filler injections (which tend to elicit swelling), specifically.

Try : Boiron Arnicare Cream

Vitamin C Serum

"Products that contain vitamin C can be chilled as well because it helps the ingredient stay stable for a longer amount of time," Dr. Peredo points out. The ingredient, which delivers antioxidant protection plus skin-brightening and collagen-boosting benefits, is notoriously un stable. Dr. King agrees, noting that keeping your vitamin C products in the fridge can help prolong their shelf life. (But regardless, if you notice any change in color, texture, or odor, throw it out, she adds.) Another caveat: Make sure the serum is water, not oil-based, per Dr. Peredo's previous note of caution. And with any vitamin C product, seeking out opaque, dark packaging—no matter where you're going to store the bottle—is a must, since light can also inactivate the ingredient.

10 Skincare Products That Benefit From Being In The Fridge

I f you've been keeping up with the latest beauty trends, chances are you've already heard about the skincare fridge . These handy-dandy little appliances are a miniature version of your ordinary kitchen refrigerator, but instead of keeping your dairy and produce cool, these are designed to extend the life and improve the performance of your skincare products. Most skincare fridges are compact enough to be placed in your bedroom or bathroom so that you can store your refrigeration-friendly products alongside your other beauty supplies, and not next to the milk and cheese in the kitchen fridge.

Indeed, a skincare fridge can be an efficient and convenient way to maximize the effectiveness of your products. "Generally, but not always, refrigerating products will help extend their shelf life," Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, tells Allure . "Moreover, the cooling sensation on the skin from applying a refrigerated product may help calm itch and give a more soothing effect than a room-temperature product."

But before you shove your entire makeup case in the fridge, there are some things you need to know. Not all beauty products need to be refrigerated. In fact, some products can be damaged by refrigeration. Knowing what to store and what not to store in your skincare fridge is critical if you want to get in on this surging beauty trend.

Why Temperature Matters

You might have heard a good deal about the benefits of refrigerating your beauty products, but you may not be quite clear about how or why it works. Storing your beauty products at cold temperatures depends largely on the products' specific ingredients and the speed at which those ingredients tend to break down. Some ingredients, such as vitamin C, are "unstable" and can degrade when exposed to heat (per Skincare.com ). This is why products containing active (and unstable) ingredients generally fare best in cool, dark environments, such as the skincare fridge.

Bacterial growth is another critical consideration. Unfortunately, as Forbes notes, beauty products can be the perfect breeding ground for microbial growth. After all, no matter how meticulously clean you may keep your space and how impeccable your hygiene is, the body is its own microbiome, proliferating with healthy and not-so-healthy microorganisms.

And whether you use your fingers, an applicator, a brush, or a sponge, you're almost inevitably going to introduce some kind of bacteria into your product container. Temperature and humidity, though, will have an impact on whether those bacteria proliferate and at what speed. Generally, the lower the temperature, the more time it takes for compounds to degrade or for bacteria to reach harmful levels (per Michigan State University ).

Face Toners And Mists

Face toners and mists are perfect for your skincare fridge. Keeping your toner or face mist in the refrigerator is going to maximize its effectiveness and feel heavenly for those with irritated or inflamed skin. Cooling the product will increase the soothing effect, reducing inflammation, redness, and irritation (per Patchology ).

In fact, the benefits of the cold are so significant that ice facials are increasingly becoming a frontline defense for calming unhappy skin. According to  Healthline , for instance, "ice facials," which include the use of ice compresses and refrigerated products, will decrease eye puffiness, improve skin tone, and decrease acne breakouts.

And that's not the only benefit. A cool toner or mist can be an ideal pick-me-up at the start of the day. Esthetician to the stars, Taylor Worden, recommends spritzing your face with a fresh-from-the-fridge mist each morning to help you feel alert and energized and to give your skin a radiant glow (per CNN ). Best of all, a cool spritz can be gloriously refreshing on hot, humid summer days when both you and your skin need a little extra TLC.

Sheet Masks

Sheet masks are another product that works best straight from the fridge. "Any skincare product that claims to be soothing, cooling, or anti-inflammatory is going to be even more so when stored in a refrigerator," board-certified dermatologist Hadley King tells Real Simple .

The coolness of the mask will feel delicious, like cold compress therapy but with the added benefit of purifying the skin! All this can be attributed to the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of cold temperatures. Cold exposure numbs and draws blood away from the affected area by constricting the blood vessels. This, in turn, reduces inflammation and swelling, which is why doctors recommend ice, not heat, in the first 48 hours following an injury (per Johns Hopkins Medicine ).

The delicate skin of your face deserves that same gentle care because of all that it endures in the course of a day. From exposure to wind and sun to the ordinary stressors of daily life, your skin pays the price. A cold sheet mask can be the perfect way to pay it back.

Vitamin C Serums

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a fan-favorite ingredient for skincare products, particularly skin repairing and anti-aging serums. And it's not difficult to understand why. "Vitamin C has several important functions within the body — including proper immune system function, tissue healing, collagen formation, maintenance of bones and cartilage, and optimal absorption of iron," registered dietitian nutritionist Emily Achey tells MindBodyGreen . It is also a "powerful antioxidant," which means that it can aid in the fight against the fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging caused by oxidative stress.

As great as the benefits of vitamin C can be for your skin's health and appearance, though, improper storage can negate them all. As we've discussed, vitamin C tends to be especially vulnerable to temperature variations and does much better in cold, constant temperatures. What this all means, ultimately, is that refrigeration can help extend the life and increase the efficacy of your vitamin C serums. This is particularly true if you live in a hot and humid environment.

Face Rollers

Face rollers are huge right now — and with good reason. Face rollers work their magic in myriad ways, from increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation, puffiness, and stress (per the Cleveland Clinic ).

"The lymphatic system is your body's way of getting rid of toxins and unwanted bacteria in the body," dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal explains to the Cleveland Clinic. "So by rolling in a certain direction, you can improve the lymphatic flow and drainage of the face." And, on top of all this, face rollers simply feel fantastic. But you multiply the benefits when the roller is icy cold. It's a bracing, brightening pick-me-up.

Cold face rollers can also be ideal for use over a sheet mask or to enhance the distribution and absorption of your favorite skincare products (per WebMD ). Your face will feel firmer and more sculpted, and your complexion will look clearer and more refreshed. And as an added bonus, the stress-relieving effects of cold face rolling will reduce your cortisol levels, as explained by WebMD, which has been shown to accelerate the aging process.

Products Containing Antioxidants

Many beauty products, especially those touted as "anti-aging," contain antioxidant ingredients, such as vitamins C and E (per Paula's Choice ). Other popular antioxidants include retinol and resveratrol. As the name suggests, antioxidants get their age-defying reputation from their capacity to "fight" free radicals in the body.

"Free radicals are missing an electron from their outer shell," registered dietitian Anthony DiMarino explains to the Cleveland Clinic . "That makes them unstable, so they go and steal an electron from the molecules in your skin cells, or from your blood cells, or from wherever they can. That causes damage to surrounding cells." This can cause oxidative stress, and the skin is often among the first and most obvious areas where it manifests.

Antioxidants, as the name suggests, help to restore a more healthy balance, neutralizing free radicals and thus slowing or preventing the damage they cause. However, as we've seen, antioxidants, such as vitamin C, are sensitive to heat, light, and humidity. That means proper storage is essential if you want to maximize their longevity and effectiveness — and a cool, dark place like the fridge is a great place to start.

Most Organic, Vegan, Or Natural Products

If you have a penchant for organic or vegan products, there's a good chance they would benefit from refrigeration. That's because most natural products like these contain few (if any) chemical preservatives (per WebMD ).

That means they're likely to degrade pretty quickly. Using a natural beauty product after its expiration date  can be bad for your skin. "In some cases, bacteria may begin to form, resulting in rashes, breakouts or infections," dermatologist Alpana Mohta tells HuffPost . Similarly, your natural products will deteriorate much more quickly than products containing preservatives, meaning they're likely to develop discoloration, odor, or a change in texture and consistency.

That's why refrigerating your organic skincare products may be helpful in extending the shelf life — but it's not a total guarantee, of course. "If the product doesn't contain preservatives, it won't have a very long shelf life regardless," master aesthetician Paula Provenzano explains to Bustle . "Unless it is recommended by the manufacturer, refrigeration is not a guarantee of a longer shelf life." However, throwing your organic products in the fridge won't hurt and is a better option as opposed to a humid bathroom counter.

Aloe vera-based products are great for the skin. They can soothe sunburn, calm irritations, and aid in wound healing. But the shelf-life of aloe vera is quite limited — especially raw aloe vera — which is why these products in gel and juice form should be kept in a cool place to extend their life (via  AloeCure ).

Cooling your aloe vera-based products won't just make them last longer, though. Refrigeration will also amplify their therapeutic benefits. Aloe vera, after all, is often used to soothe irritated skin and, in particular, to ease the pain and inflammation of sunburn. As we've discussed, the cold is a natural analgesic, meaning that it will help to numb the area, which will only increase aloe vera's natural skin-soothing properties.

And, as we've also seen, cold exposure causes the blood vessels to constrict, drawing blood away from the target area (per the Mayo Clinic ). This helps to reduce inflammation and irritation, allowing sunburnt and wounded skin to be soothingly cooled from the inside out.

We already know how important it is to store antioxidant-rich products in a cool, dry, dark place. We also know it's helpful to refrigerate organic, vegan, and other "natural" products that are likely preservative-free. And that means that if your eye cream contains antioxidants or is labeled as natural, vegan, or organic (as so many are today), it will probably last longer in the refrigerator.

But that's not the only benefit of refrigerating your eye cream. The cold cream can significantly (if only temporarily) reduce puffiness and dark circles under the eyes by "reducing blood flow," as noted by  Johns Hopkins University .

What this means is that you're likely to see better results and far more immediate ones than if you stored your eye cream at room temperature. If you're looking for a quick fix after a particularly late night, refrigerating your eye cream can be just the ticket.

Arnica Treatment

No matter how blessed you may be genetically and regardless of how exacting and faithful you are about your health and beauty regimen, everyone could use a little bit of help from time to time. And if you've had a cosmetic procedure and you're looking to reduce swelling and bruising, applying Arnica fresh from the fridge is a great option.

Arnica has also been shown in scientific studies to have effects similar to known anti-inflammatories (per Frontiers in Surgery ). This is why it's a remedy of choice for anyone wanting to accelerate the post-procedure healing process. There is mounting evidence that, in addition to decreasing swelling and bruising, Arnica can also help to relieve pain and "act as antibiotics," according to WebMD .

And, as we've seen, cold temperatures in and of themselves have an anti-inflammatory effect. That means the cooling sensation from storing your Arnica in the fridge may increase the therapeutic benefits during your post-procedure healing period.

Liquid Eyeliner And Mascara

There's nothing worse than goopy, clumpy, or foul-smelling eye makeup. It's also a significant health hazard. Products that are applied so near the mucus membranes of the eye, such as mascara and eyeliner, must be treated with particular care because any contamination or bacterial growth can lead to infections (per News Medical ).

Refrigeration, as we've seen, can significantly inhibit bacterial growth. That's critical because mascara and liquid eyeliner are ideal microbial breeding grounds. As Insider notes, the reusable applicator is a principal factor because it can introduce microorganisms into the cosmetics while also pumping air into the container. That tight, humid, aerobic environment can act as an incubator, and suddenly the flora that is safe and normal in small quantities can proliferate.

When you refrigerate, though, you're retarding that bacterial growth, meaning that your products won't just be healthier, but they'll also perform better. You will still need to discard them sooner than many of your other products. But when refrigerated, your mascara and liquid eyeliner can last for three months, provided you don't share them, use them when you are sick, or add water or other microorganism-friendly contaminants (per the Cleveland Clinic ).

Skin And Lip Balms

Balms are, by definition, meant to be deliciously soothing. They're generally used to strengthen the skin's protective layer, which can help to guard the skin not only against UV radiation but also against other environmental irritants and pollutants. Balms are also generally designed to be ultra-nourishing and super-hydrating (per Sonya Dakar ). And that means that balms are ideal for cleaning, calming, and clarifying the skin, giving it a soft, dewy, youthful glow.

Keeping skin balms cold, though, will only enhance their effectiveness. That's because many balms contain antioxidants and other active ingredients that are highly unstable and prone to degradation at room temperature (per Today ). When you do this, you're not just extending the longevity and performance of your skin balm but you're also unleashing its thermotherapeutic. The cold, as we've seen, serves as a great vasoconstrictor, reducing puffiness and inflammation. It also inhibits the degradation of collagen in the deeper layers of the skin (per Physiopedia ).

It's important to note, though, that not all balms are suitable for your skincare fridge. Balms that have a high water or oil content, for instance, are best stored at room temperature to prevent clumping or hardening. Wax-based balms and those that are ahydrogenous (i.e. containing little or no water) work well fresh from the fridge. Fortunately, most skin balms have a wax base and have a very low water content (per WebMD ). However, it's always a good idea to read your product's ingredients list.

Certain Moisturizers

Much like serums, some moisturizers can be a great candidate for refrigeration, but it very much depends on the specific formulation. If your moisturizer is rich in antioxidants, and particularly if it contains retinol or high levels of vitamin C, then refrigeration is probably your best bet for maximizing its shelf-life and performance.

"I recommend keeping water-based or gel-based moisturizers in the fridge," esthetician Shamara Bondaroff tells People . "Products that feature a jelly-like or watery consistency do well there as it helps to preserve texture, efficacy, and consistency. They also feel like an extra cooling and soothing treat after sitting in the fridge!"

If you're using an oil moisturizer, you should consider nixing the fridge, as cold temps can cause the products to "lose consistency and even thicken," Daily Mail notes. Most gel moisturizers, for instance, are perfect for your beauty fridge. Oil-based moisturizers, on the other hand, may harden or lose their consistency, which is the opposite of what we want.

Products That Shouldn't Be Refrigerated

While refrigeration may increase the lifespan and efficacy of beauty products, there are actually some skincare products that should never be refrigerated . Cosmetics, in general, shouldn't be refrigerated. Dermatologist Melissa Piliang tells the Cleveland Clinic , "So I would not recommend storing your makeup cold. So makeup is meant to be at room temperature or body temperature to be able to go on the skin smoothly and spread evenly. So if it's cold, it may not spread as nice. And you may have uneven skin tone from it."

And, as we've seen, products that have a high oil content and thus are likely to freeze and clump should also be kept at room temperature. And while sheet masks will benefit from a cooling sensation, clay masks? Not so much. "Cold temperatures can also affect the consistency and color of clay masks, making them unusable at times," Reid Maclellan, adjunct faculty at Harvard Medical School, tells Verywell Health . We recommend checking the back label of your skincare products before tossing them in the fridge to ensure they are a good fit.

Investing In A Skincare Fridge

You don't have to start clearing a space beside the milk and eggs if you're ready to jump on the refrigeration bandwagon. In fact, storing your skincare products in your kitchen fridge can do more harm than good because food must be refrigerated at temperatures lower than those tolerated by most of your fridge-friendly skincare products. According to the Food and Drug Administration , kitchen refrigerators should be set at temperatures "at or below" 40 degrees Fahrenheit to keep food safe and fresh.

But skincare products aren't likely to withstand these temps for long. In general, fridge-friendly beauty products will fare best at temperatures between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit (per the Cleveland Clinic ). This is below room temperature for most but above food-grade refrigeration. The good news, though, is that you don't have to invest in a second, full-sized fridge to get the temperatures you need for your skincare.

In fact, one of the biggest beauty trends today is the skincare fridge. These pint-sized powerhouses are perfect for your cold storage products! They'll keep your skincare products in that perfect target range and won't consume much space or energy. And because they come in various colors and styles, they'll add a bit of flair to your makeup table. When buying a fridge for your beauty products , keep an eye out for size, temperature settings, and aesthetics so you find the perfect skincare fridge for you and your skincare needs.
