The 10 Best No-Fly River Cruises You Need To Try

Seine no fly river cruise ship near Eiffel Tower

River cruises in Europe are a great way to enjoy the scenery without worrying about flying. The end destination of many river cruising trips is often Paris, Amsterdam or Brussels – all major cities with plenty going on for visitors. Perfect for those that want “no-fly” options for a holiday in Europe!

Unlike many further afield overseas holidays, river cruises in Europe really lend themselves to the increasingly popular “no-flying” holiday concept.  Due to climate concerns regarding carbon emissions and the restrictions in airports due to Covid-19, river cruising without flying will become even more in demand, we predict. The start and end destinations are usually capital cities or major cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels or Cologne.

From the UK, we are blessed with a short channel crossing either by ferry or by rail to take us to continental Europe and the river cruise starting points on the rivers of France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland.  With a bit of careful planning, we can even get you to The Danube.  So when you are looking for the best no-fly river cruises, what should you be looking for?

Advantages/disadvantages of no-fly river cruises in Europe

From talking to clients we believe that the following applies:

Advantages of no-fly European river cruising

More flexibility due to multiple daily train times – depart when you want

A much more relaxed experience than moving through an airport and encountering prolonged security queues

Able to arrive much later to check in

There’s more space on a train and able to move about during the journey

Unlikely to be long delays so you arrive on time

The ability to view the countryside makes you feel that you are travelling, discovering and on holiday already

Disadvantages of no-fly European river cruising

With the UK no longer being an EU member state, there may well be longer immigration queues for UK citizens to enter the Schengen area via the rest of the world lanes than previously experienced.  NB: However, the same would apply at immigration at airports.

Changing between Eurostar and domestic rail services such as SNCF or Deutsche Bahn may mean handling luggage and finding luggage space.

Travelling within the UK from outside the South East may mean having to get to London/Ebbsfleet the day before.

Our list of the 10 best no-fly river cruises in Europe, concentrates on the best river cruises that also mean you don’t have to fly but where travelling by not flying works best.  The list also concentrates on rail transportation as it is quicker than travelling by coach – coach travel we believe will wane in popularity due to its enclosed nature for long periods of time and social distancing restrictions.  But for those that like the ease of coach travel we have included a recommendation.

So don’t let fear of flying or airports put you off going on a European trip, as a river cruise without using airports can work out to be easy to manage.  There is help for less mobile travellers with Eurostar and also the national continental rail operators such as SNCF or Deutsche Bahn.  As river cruise travel agents we can help plan and arrange any additional assistance, upgrades or porterage.

You can get to French river cruises without flying, Rhine river cruises without flying and The Netherlands and Belgium river cruises without flying.  And we can also accommodate The Danube without flying and without taking 2 days to get there.  Read on for more information.

So, save some emissions and bag yourself a holiday that works without flying.

Our no-fly river cruise office is now open.  Why not speak to us about your requirements today and we’ll recommend the best cruise for you?

The best 7 night no-fly Holland & Belgium river cruise

1. AmaWaterways “Best of Holland and Belgium”

Town Hall, Veere, Zeeland, Netherlands

This round trip from Amsterdam can now be enjoyed from June through to December.  This trip suits both the active and the less active due to the wonderful “flatness” of the low countries which make it ideal for either walking, hiking or cycling.  Clients can take advantage of a direct train from London to Amsterdam.  Every day has lots of small touring group options including the option of a bike tour through one of the beautiful medieval towns such as Bruges or Antwerp or cycle next to the 19 windmills at Kinderdijk.  Taste waffles when you stop on your bike, or take the motor coach to the chocolate factory or the Belgian beer garden, the choice is yours.  Visit castles and museums and windmills and the incredible modern buildings of Rotterdam by architect Piet Blom, the Kubuswoningen, or ‘Cube-Houses’.  AmaWaterways provide the bikes and the tour guides.  Or for those of you that prefer a more leisurely pace, then a slow walking tour will be for you.  For the more active, the onboard Wellness Host will also provide daily yoga classes, runs and there’s an onboard gym.  This truly is a river cruise for all ages and states of activity.  And only a couple of hours by direct train from London.  Plus there is never an issue with high or low waterlevels. This is in the high end price bracket but certain departure times may have discounts available.

Suitable for the more active travellers? YES

Biking tours every day including a bike tour to see Kinderdijk’s 19 windmills, hikes, wellness Host including onboard gym, lots of active experiences.

The best 14 night Rhine no fly river cruise

2. APT River Cruises”Western Front Explorer”

Het Steen Castle Antwerp Belgium

This river cruise is (wonderfully) longer – 14 nights, still reachable directly from London to Amsterdam but is also a history buffs delight.  APT offers this 14 night all-inclusive river cruise with rail included and plenty of time to explore the history of this area including the World War 1 sites.  Only offered on a couple of dates each year, it sells out fast with guests from as far afield as Australia and Canada, eager to find out more about this area of history.

Covering the best of The Netherlands and Belgium’s waterways, there are several tours to choose from each day depending whether you are feeling historic, gastronomic or simply curious to explore your surroundings.  There is of course the chance to experience the haunting nightly “Last Post” at the Menin Gate in the Ypres region of Belgium.  Savour a Michelin-starred lunch at Château Neercanne , enjoy the artwork of masters Piccasso and Monet.  Travelling on the April departure will also allow a visit to the world famous Keukenhof flower gardens. Or an exclusive private organ recital and cheese making classes anyone?  There is also plenty of time to explore on your own with your APT app with GPS, take out a bike through the beauty of the lowlands and simply recount your day with your fellow worldwide travellers over your all inclusive drinks in the lounge of your luxurious ship. This is in the high end price bracket but certain departure times may have discounts available.

The best 7 night no-fly Rhine & Moselle river cruise

3. Titan Travel “Scenic Sights of the Beautiful Moselle”

Titan River Cruise Moselle Germany

This is a great 7 night no fly river cruise on the Rhine and the lesser-visited Moselle.  For those that want to be looked after from the minute you leave your front door, then this is the perfect Rhine and Moselle no-fly river cruise for you.  If you haven’t heard of Titan Travel before, as a tour operator Titan specialise in catering to travelers who like to be looked after and provide a car to your door as well as international transport and it is all included in the brochure price.

Titan VIP home pick up will pick you up from anywhere in the UK and then transferred to coach and ferry crossing. This one is not available by rail, unfortunately.  So easy but with beautiful visits to Cochem, Bernkastel and Trier. With drinks included you can happily discuss your discoveries of the day with your new ship mates.

There are loads of departures and prices from a little over £1000 for a lower deck cabin low season.  Titan now charter their own ships so are able to offer a good 4 star standard of no-fly river cruise often with drinks included and some excursions.  On this tour you will be visiting Beethoven’s house as well as Cochem castle with wine tasting, Bernkastel and beautiful Trier.  The river ships are comfortable and the staff and fellow guests very friendly.  Titan are currently using the Serenade river ship, refurbished in 2018 there are fixed window cabins and french balcony cabins.  Plus, there are also low single supplements for travellers who don’t want to share a cabin.

4. The best short tulip time no-fly river cruise

Riviera travel “amsterdam, kinderdijk and dutch bulbfields river cruise by train”.

River Cruises Dutch Waterways - Kinderdijk

Often known as a “Tulip Time” cruise, this Spring time river cruise should be a must for all those that love river cruising.  The cruise is timed to coincide with the blooms of Holland and Belgium, when the lowlands are starting to wake up from winter.

Perhaps you haven’t tried river cruising before, so a shorter, cheaper cruise which doesn’t involve wasting time hanging around in airports could get you to try it? This Riviera Travel river cruise, the best short no fly river cruise by train to Amsterdam shows you the highlights of Amsterdam, the windmills of Kinderdijk, Dutch fishing villages and the world famous Tulip bulbfields of Keukenhof gardens all in a short 4 night break.

Riviera Travel offer the UK’s most popular river cruises and charter their own luxury ships with literary names such as MS George Eliot, MS Geoffrey Chaucer and MS Oscar Wilde.  Your fellow travellers will be predominantly from the UK.  For a higher standard cruise, their value is hard to beat as tours are included on a daily basis as well as all meals onboard.

It is best to book early as there are a limited number of no single supplement cabins on the lower deck on each departure if you are travelling solo or in a group and not wishing to share a cabin.

5. The best no-fly Rh ô ne river cruise

Amadeus river cruises “treasures of burgundy & provence”.

Lyon at nightime

This 7 night roundtrip river cruise from Lyon, can be overlooked, unfairly as some feel that it is not going from north to south or south to north in the same way some of the other cruises.  That preconception really does it a disservice.  The train from London to Lyon is much, much shorter and the distance travelled on this cruise is the same.  You visit Macon, Beaune, Arles, Avignon, Viviers, Lyon and Chalon sur Saone just as you do on the other cruises.  But miss the long journey back again from Avignon by train.

The Amadeus Provence luxury river ship is one of the prettiest on the river with an on deck infinite pool.  You can watch the world go by on board or explore Provence and Burgundy yourself. There’s also nothing like the camaraderie guests have with the Amadeus staff, who have been working for this small Austrian family owned company for year. They really make the trip.

Suitable for less active travellers? YES.

Much easier train journey than travelling to Avignon, ability to stay onboard and watch the world go by if you decide not to go on a tour.

Suitable for the more active? YES .

The onboard Activities Host offers early morning yoga sessions, hiking trips and onboard bicycles and biking tours available.

Price point = ££

6. The best no-fly Christmas time Rhine river cruise

Amadeus river cruises “christmas cruise on the rhine”.

european river cruises via eurostar

This 6 night river cruise on one of Amadeus’ luxury river cruise ships brings our customers to come back and enjoy it year after year.  Join the Eurostar in London and change in Brussels to arrive in Cologne just yards from where your river ship will be moored and get ready for a very different Christmas experience.

The atmosphere on board is incredible as you celebrate Christmas with your fellow European and North American travellers and the long standing Amadeus crew, loyal to this small Austrian family owned river cruise company.  Catch the Christmas markets in Cologne before Christmas and enjoy a gala Christmas dinner after decorating the tree. You can also attend midnight mass at Speyer cathedral if you are still able to move!

Suitable for couples, families with older children and friendship groups, this cruise is also suitable for those that don’t want to share a cabin as single supplements are lowered.

Tours are available to purchase onboard or you may want to just wander yourselves in your groups and the Cruise Manager will always be on hand to advise you.  You may even get some snow, but we make no guarantees.

Suitable for less active travellers? YES.

An easy train journey from London to Cologne via Brussels. The ability to stay onboard and watch the world go by if you decide not to go on a tour, there will always be something to do.

Suitable for the more active travellers? YES.

Amadeus Star river cruise ship

7. The best no-fly Danube river cruise

Amadeus river cruises “beautiful blue danube & the danube delta”.

european river cruises via eurostar

This is the easiest by far Danube no fly river cruise by train.  Other companies try to do the Danube by train.  However much fun it might be (which it isn’t really) to take over 2 days to get to Hungary by train, it has really lost it’s glow by the time you have to go back, a mere 7 days later!  You really have to like trains!  Instead, this trip starts and ends in the beautiful Germany city of Passau, rarely visited by UK guests on the Danube itself.

The train journey to this part of the Danube takes about 10 hours from London St Pancras changing trains in Brussels and Frankfurt. In my opinion Frankfurt itself is worth a visit including at visit to the Goethe Institute, Germany’s most famous writer/poet.

You will see the very essence of the Danube on this 16 day trip. Visit Passau, Budapest, Vienna, Melk, Romania, Bulgaria, The Iron Gates as well as taking a Danube Delta small boat safari with an ecologist in this incredible UNESCO preserved biodiversity site and then go all the way to Constanta and the Black Sea. A 7 night Danube trip usually can only cover Germany and Austria, so with this trip you get some much more as well as a shorter train journey and a longer holiday.

With departures throughout the season this is THE bucket list Danube cruise and one that can be done easily without flying.

Amadeus River Cruises river cruise ship

8. The best no-fly Seine river cruise

Scenic river cruises “normandy & gems of the seine”.

Romantic River Seine River Cruise with APT

We love this 11 day round trip on Seine from Scenic as it gives travellers  more time to explore Paris and Normandy by including visits to Honfleur, Deauville, Giverney,  as well as an onboard expert to explain in depth the Western Front.  Nothing is missed out in this tour of Paris and Northern France and also includes special extra excursions and treats such as shopping with a chef.  More time to discover and also enjoy a fantastic luxury ship, the Scenic Gem with full all-inclusive.

The no-fly bit is very straightforward as it involves a Eurostar from London to Paris and then you will be picked up from Paris Gare du Nord.  10 nights on a wonderful cruise and then a simple couple of hours train journey back again to London.  This cruise in the high end price bracket but certain departure times may have discounts available.

Ease of travel to the ship, all-inclusive onboard, motor coach tours available

Suitable for more active travellers? YES

Scenic provides electric bikes which can be used for bike tours and taken out independently with a GPS onboard guide for your own adventures, just reserve at the front desk.  Gym onboard as well as exercise classes.

Scenic Gem river ship on the river Seine.

9. The best no-fly river cruise to Bordeaux, France

Uniworld river cruises “brilliant bordeaux”.

View-on-Bordeaux-in-the-evening---FranceLowRes

Discover the waterways of the Bordeaux region, fast flowing and intriguing on this 7 night no-fly river cruise with trains from London to Bordeaux via Paris.  The journey takes about 7 hours with one change.

This is an ultra luxury all-inclusive river cruise with the boutique river cruise company, Uniworld.  This particular cruise offers the friendliest and most attentive yet unobtrusive staff on the luxurious SS Bon Voyage, fantastic regional dining experiences onboard.

But off the ship, there is more to this cruise that simply Bordeaux wines – that is if you need anything more than just Bordeaux wines, in what is the home of wine.  Why not do a yoga class at the Blaye Fortress or if that is too much like exercise, then take a scenic drive along the Route de la Corniche Fleurie through the most picturesque villages in the region.  There will be an opportunity to bike through the Médoc Vineyards as well as discovering the colourful life of Toulouse Lautrec at Château de Malromé.  And don’t worry, there will be plenty of private wine tasting and learning opportunities in this the most incredible of French regions. This cruise is in the high end price bracket but certain departure times may have discounts available.

Uniworld take care of everything, you will be completely spoilt. Touring options will always include slower paced options and motor coaches.

With onboard fitness activities and bikes available, there will always be something to do to work off the incredible food and drink on offer throughout the trip.

10. The best no-fly Rhine river cruise to Switzerland

Riviera travel “rhine cruise to switzerland”.

Rivera Travel River Cruises with Global River Cruising

Yes – I have included yet another river cruise with Riviera – they are the operator we sell the most of to our UK customers – in my no-fly river cruises to Europe top 10.

This  is a 7 night no-fly river cruise which takes in the highlights of The Black Forest and beautiful Lucerne but starts from Cologne rather than Amsterdam.  There are merits to starting in Cologne and missing out the more industrial area of the North and also if you have already been to Amsterdam in the past.  Seeing Lucerne is a highlight in itself and works out very reasonably by not having to pay Swiss prices for accommodation in one of their most beautiful cities.

The journey by train is a little more involved from London to get to Basel in Switzerland with a few more changes if you were going to do it independently, which is why this fully escorted river cruise is highly recommended for those that would rather have it all sorted out for them. Riviera make it much easier.

All tours are set each day and all transport escorted, including to and from the UK (London).

Riviera Travel MS George Eliot Exterior

And there you have it, our top 10 no-fly river cruises in Europe.

I hope that you have enjoyed this list. It was a tough decision and there are very many that I had to leave out. This list is ones that tick all the boxes from ease of travel and quality of cruise within their price point.

P.S. -We do have a much wider selection of other of river cruises that don’t need flights within our website. Please do have a look.

Is this tour right for you?

This moderately active trip covers a fair amount of ground each day. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps and significant slopes. There is a potential for sailings to be impacted by river water levels, or other factors which may impact safe navigation. This may cause part or all of the cruise itinerary to be operated by alternative means and may also involve hotel accommodations.

Important to know...high & low water

European river cruising is popular for very good reason. It's a relaxing and convenient way to experience Europe while enjoying the comfort of a deluxe ship. However, before making the decision to reserve your trip, please be aware of potential conditions which may impact your cruise. While most of the time river cruises operate exactly as planned, weather conditions may result in high or low water levels which impact a ship's itinerary and, on occasion, render a ship unable to sail at all. On rare occasions, other events such as heavy fog, a damaged lock, or an incapacitated vessel blocking the river, may impact a sailing. These events typically occur with little or no notice. In the event that a cruise is partially or completely impacted, the itinerary will be modified as is necessary and this may involve a similar itinerary by coach or other means of transportation. When the option exists, the operator will "swap ships" with another vessel in an attempt to retain the sailing experience. Crew, ship and cabin configuration may differ.

Important to remember...

The day-by-day tour descriptions are intended as an indicative guide only. Travel by nature is unpredictable. Weather patterns, sea or river conditions, road accessibility, public holidays, travel restrictions and a multitude of other factors may necessitate itinerary changes that are ultimately for the client's benefit. It is essential that travellers are flexible and open minded in this regard.

15 of the Best European River Cruises

Explore France, Germany, and more on these European river cruises.

european river cruises via eurostar

Much of the appeal of European river cruises, especially as we emerge from the pandemic with pent-up travel demand, is the small size of the ships, casual atmosphere, and accessibility. Unlike oceangoing ships that carry as many as 5,000 passengers, most river cruise ships accommodate around 150 guests, for a more intimate experience. Balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, and open-air viewing are features of most river cruise ships, and some offer pools, spas, fitness areas, and jogging tracks.

Guests are kept busy (if they wish to be) with daily shore excursions, and most cruises offer several options depending on interests and activity levels. Bikes and walking tours are available in most ports, or guests can choose a leisurely day in a comfortable lounge enjoying the passing scenery.

"River cruises offer opportunities to step ashore in fairy-tale towns and fabled cities. You can immerse yourself in contemporary culture and learn something about the history of the towns along the continent's greatest rivers," according to Ralph Grizzle of River Cruise Advisor . "Sitting on the top deck of a ship under brilliant blue skies, you can gaze on fabled landscapes dotted with castles, villages, and vineyards. A flight of stairs down, and you have all the amenities of a modern hotel—restaurants, bars, fitness facilities, spas, internet access, and comfortable staterooms."

With a number of cruise companies and rivers to choose from, planning a river cruise can take some time. Consulting with a travel advisor is always a good idea, and there's plenty of information available online as well. These are the major companies offering the best European river cruises along with examples of their itineraries.

Perhaps the best known of the river cruise companies, Viking promotes their "longships," which include large suites and inviting verandas for outdoor dining. Guests enjoy Viking's destination-focused dining as well as the variety of staterooms and itineraries with a wide range of prices.

Viking's 10-day "Portugal's River of Gold '' begins in Lisbon with a walking tour through its ancient streets before heading to Porto, home of the country's traditional wine, to board the ship and begin the cruise along the Douro River. Guests can explore Baroque palaces, vineyards, and lush scenery along the way, arriving in the World Heritage city of Salamanca, Spain on day six. The itinerary includes visits to Portuguese villages in Pinhão and Régua to sample local foods and wines before returning to Porto.

AmaWaterways

Celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2022, this family-owned and operated cruise company focuses on excellent food and wine, tasteful décor, stateroom views, and innovation in their luxurious fleet. Fares include fitness classes, shore excursions, and all dining on board, including The Chef's Table specialty restaurant. New ships debut each year, and the spacious AmaMagna , launched in 2019, is nearly twice the width of traditional European cruise ships.

Wine lovers will want to experience the seven-night "Taste of Bordeaux," with visits to iconic chateaux, timeless vineyards, and delicious wine tastings while cruising the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers. Excursions include a tour of a medieval castle and tasting of Sauternes, a stop in Pauillac, gateway to the Medoc wine region, and a Saint-Emilion tour and tasting. Returning to Bordeaux, guests will explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site and capital of the wine world.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Uniworld's one-of-a-kind vessels are inspired by the locales they visit, making their luxurious ships a destination in themselves. Billed as "the world's only authentic boutique cruise line," Uniworld offers in-suite butler service, world-class cuisine, and all-inclusive rates that cover premium spirits and wines as well as gratuities.

Their eight-day "Enchanting Danube" cruise aboard the S.S. Maria Theresa begins in Budapest with a choice of touring by bicycle or walking. A stop in Vienna includes a Mozart and Strauss concert at a Viennese palace, a city tour, and a taste of local delicacies. The cruise ends in Passau with a choice of bicycling, walking, or hiking to explore the city and a special captain's farewell reception and dinner.

Avalon Waterways

Avalon features wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows with beds facing the views for ultimate enjoyment from their suites and staterooms. Large private bathrooms include full showers and L'Occitane bath amenities. Their deluxe beds and luxurious linens provide comfort in spacious, quiet quarters with ample closet space. Avalon offers "Active & Discovery" river cruises with activities for a variety of energy and fitness levels, from traditional sightseeing to action-packed experiences.

The "Active & Discovery on the Rhone" cruise begins in Lyon and heads south through the French countryside of Provence and ends in Port-Saint-Louis. On the way, Avalon Choice excursions include a culinary walk, cooking class, painting workshop, wine tastings, guided bike rides, and more, with Active, Classic, and Discovery level activities.

Started as a New England motor coach tour company, Tauck is a family-owned global travel firm offering tours and cruises to a wide range of destinations around the world. Their award-winning European river cruises are praised for their personalized service, exclusive destination experiences, luxurious cabins and suites, fine dining, and professional, caring staff.

"Impressions from the Seine: Paris to Normandy," an eight-day cruise, features stops in historic small villages and towns and a visit to the D-Day beaches of Normandy and the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach. A private visit to the home and gardens of Claude Monet at Giverny and a visit to the Impressionist Museum will please art lovers. Other highlights include a guided visit to Versailles, Louis XIV's magnificent palace and gardens, the Cathedrale de Rouen, and Joan of Arc Square.

Scenic offers both ocean and river cruises, all with emphasis on its fleet of "Space-Ships" and their meticulous design and spacious quarters. Guests enjoy personalized butler service and all-inclusive cruising. Ships offer a wellness area, massage services, gym, e-bikes, and onboard entertainment. Scenic's "FreeChoice" excursions offer something for all activity levels.

The "Charming Castles & Vineyards of the Rhine & Moselle" begins with arrival in Frankfurt and transfer to Mainz for boarding. Stops include Koblenz, where guests can take a walking or e-bike tour. There's a private classical music concert and tour of Reichsburg Castle along the way, as well as optional visits to the Mercedes-Benz factory or a walking tour of Strasbourg and its magnificent cathedral.

Emerald Cruises

Emerald offers both yacht and river cruises, with a range of cruises on the rivers in Europe. Founded in 2013, Emerald now features a fleet of nine "Star-Ships," with stylish suites, first-class amenities, and room for 180 guests. Most carry bicycles, and all staterooms are equipped with hiking poles. Excursions include the EmeraldPLUS program of special experiences to connect with their destinations, and EmeraldACTIVE offers faster-paced guided tours, bike rides, hikes, and activities.

The eight-day "Sensations of Lyon & Provence" cruise begins in Lyon and heads to a quaint village and then south again towards Tournon, with its 16th-century castle. Along the way, guests can choose a hike through vineyards, canoe trip, village walking tours, or wine tasting onboard.

Adventures by Disney River Cruises

Partnering with AmaWaterways, Adventures by Disney offers cruises on the Seine, Rhine, and Danube Rivers, Disney style. Specially designed itineraries and Adventure Guides create experiences for parents, children, and teens, from active excursions to unique onboard activities. Adults-only dinners and wine tasting experiences along with teen programming, Disney movie nights, karaoke, trivia nights, and Junior Adventurer dinners provide entertainment for guests of all ages.

The eight-day Danube River Cruise starts in Budapest where excursions include a horse show at an equestrian park and a goulash-making competition for Adventurers. In Bratislava, Junior Adventurers can visit a petting zoo, and in the evening, there's family karaoke. A tour of Vienna and Schönbrunn Palace, marionette show, concert, and strudel making are options the next day. A day in Salzburg ends onboard with "The Sound of Music" film and singalong. After an Oktoberfest celebration and captain's farewell dinner, the cruise ends the next day.

CroisiEurope Cruises

Established in 1976, Croisi offers cruises on rivers, canals, and seas with a fleet of oceangoing ships, canal barges, and river cruise ships. The company's innovative approach allowed them to be pioneers on several rivers in Europe including the Gironde, Loire, Po, and Elbe, basing their ships' design on the characteristics of the waterways.

CroisiEurope's seven-day "Hamburg to Berlin: Discover the Medieval Charms of Hanseatic Cities" cruise starts with guided tours of Hamburg and Lübeck, A UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a morning cruise, the ship will ride on the Scharnebeck twin ship lift, one of the highest in Europe, with a vertical lift of 125 feet. An optional visit to the Autostadt theme park, dedicated to German auto design, and an afternoon cruise fill day four. The next day, there's a tour of Magdeburg, known for its fascinating architecture and culture. The ship arrives in Berlin for a tour and festive evening.

This German cruise company' s distinctive ships are easy to recognize by the large red lips and rose on the bow. Their fleet of 12 ships was joined by the new A-Rosa Sena , a hybrid powered ship expected to cruise the northern Rhine almost silently and emission-free. Family-friendly amenities include a kids club, heated outdoor pools, and free passage for children ages 15 and under.

The six-day "Highlights of the Rhine" cruise begins in Cologne and cruises on to Rotterdam and then Amsterdam the following day. Options include a bus tour, canal tour, pedal boats, or private auto tour, each at an additional cost. A variety of ways to explore Utrecht the next day are available. On day six, the ship returns to Cologne.

Lueftner Cruises

This Austrian family business dates back more than 40 years and offers European river cruises on its fleet of 16 AMADEUS ships. Five-star service, facilities, and cuisine are their hallmarks, and their ships feature wide panoramic windows and a spacious sun deck.

The eight-day "Saar and Moselle Fairytales" cruise boards in Cologne and cruises down the Rhine to the Moselle and its tributary, the Saar River. The ship passes the Mosel vineyards and docks in the medieval town of Cochem for a guided walking tour. The next day, guests can tour the town of Bernkastel-Kues and enjoy a wine tasting or hike to the ruins of a castle for a stunning view. After a morning tour of Saarburg, the ship cruises along the Saar River with panoramic views of its massive loop. The ship stops in Luxembourg and then continues to Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle Rivers meet, before returning to Cologne.

Apt River Cruises

This Australian-owned organization is the country's largest family-owned tour and cruise company , offering a variety of travel styles. Their Concerto River Ships, AmaVenita , AmaStella , and AmaReina , cruise on the Danube, Main, Rhine, and Douro Rivers with luxury accommodations and excursions. Apt charters the ships from AmaWaterways, but their itineraries and onboard programs are unique to Apt River Cruises. Apt's offerings include rail journeys, as well as small boat, yacht, and ocean cruises.

Their 15-day "Magnificent Europe" cruise begins in Amsterdam with a canal tour and cruises the Rhine, Main, and Danube Rivers before arriving in Budapest. The ship docks in Koblenz and takes a daytime cruise through the Rhine Gorge before landing in Miltenberg for a guided tour of the city. On day six, guests can choose a trip to Rothenburg or visit a family-owned farm for a home-cooked morning tea. The ship passes through the Main-Danube Canal that connects the Black Sea and the North Sea. In Vienna, there's a cocktail party and private orchestra recital or city tour before heading to Budapest for two days.

Nicko Cruises

This German company offers 30 years of experience on Europe's rivers, and has a fleet of 26 river ships in addition to the expedition ship World Voyager and oceangoing Vasco Da Gama . The company's "time to discover" philosophy focuses on intensive travel experiences, shore excursions, and varied culinary offerings.

The eight-day "Traveling on the Elbe and Havel" cruise covers Germany's north on rivers and canals aboard the Frederick Chopin . Starting in Berlin, the cruise continues to Potsdam for a guided walking tour. A guided tour takes guests through Autostadt Wolfsburg, a park dedicated to the history of the automobile. In Hamburg, there's a city tour and harbor cruise before the cruise continues to the Baltic resort, Laboe, and ends in Kiel.

Teeming River Cruises

Founded in 2017 with the goal of making European river cruises more economical and personalized, family-owned American company Teeming River Cruises developed a different river cruise model. Instead of pre-programmed group activities, guests create their own unique experiences with a complimentary city tour app for each destination. All-inclusive plans and group tours are not part of Teeming's itineraries.

Their cruise in northern Italy along the Po River, "From the Canals of Venice to Renaissance-infused Mantua," is a seven-day excursion starting in Venice where guests can discover St. Mark's Square and Doge's Palace. In partnership with CroisiEurope aboard the MS Michelangelo , the ship heads west to Vicenza and then on to Chioggia. Day four is spent in Verona, with its ancient amphitheater and Giusti Gardens. The next days are spent in Cremona and Mantua with disembarkation and a coach trip back to Venice.

Belmond - Afloat in France

Belmond has another way to cruise some of Europe's rivers — on luxury barges with private chefs and excursions like truffle hunting, hot air ballooning, canoeing, and wine tasting. Seven barges make up Afloat in France , each with its own style and size. The elegant barges cruise the waterways of Burgundy, Provence, Alsace, Champagne, Languedoc, and Franche-Comté from April to October.

On the Belmond Napoleon , guests cruise the River Saône past châteaux, rural river towns, and expansive vineyards. Stops at Montmerle, Mâcon, and Tournus offer opportunities for wine tasting and exploring a Benedictine abbey. There's a walking tour of Chalon-Sur-Sâone and time to browse through St. Jean de Losne.

Croisie Europe Douce France Cruise and Staff were excellent (Good choice of excursions, excellent service, delicious food). The Travel Agency Tour Radar was very helpful and fast. The only negative point was that the initial indicated price on the website of Tour Radar, with a discount of 500 EUR was not applied with the Travel Agency, which made the cruise more expensive than announced.

Crosieurope had nice food, plenty of beer and wine, very clean boat - both inside and out. Staff were very nice and helpful, always cleaning windows, carpet, etc. The administration staff were a bit at times disorganised. Sometimes they would forget to give message in English after they delivered Message in French.

European River Cruises Reviews

It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.
The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.

No Fly River Cruise – Paris & Normandy by Eurostar

No Fly River Cruise – Paris & Normandy by Eurostar

Cruise Expert Lisa Ramsay recently returned from a wonderful no-fly river cruise with  Riviera Travel . This was her first time experiencing a river cruise, and travelling by Eurostar!

Lisa wrote a daily blog, so read on to see how it went, and what her impressions of the Seine were.

June 2022 – Riviera Travel’s The Seine, Paris & Normandy River Cruise

Day 1 – Arrival in Paris by Eurostar

I boarded the local train from Cradley Heath to London Euston via Birmingham. I only had to take a short 10-minute stroll to St. Pancras to board the Eurostar for Gare du Nord in Paris. Even though the station is now very busy, we came in plenty of time to go through passport and security checks and produce our COVID credentials. When you arrive, there is absolutely no difficulty because immigration for entering France is handled in the UK.

There was a store on board where you could buy drinks and food, and the train was really pleasant. In just over two hours, we reached Paris. I must admit, I was a little nervous about going “under the water,” but it passed quickly.

You either keep your bags with you at throughout the journey or you can make porterage arrangements in advance.

We were met at Gare du Nord by our cruise concierge (Christine), and we boarded the coach to travel across Paris to our lovely floating hotel, the exquisite MS Jane Austen. My initial reaction was “Wow!” I had no idea what to anticipate because I’ve only ever done Ocean cruising before. I was quite aback by how roomy it was. It is so laid-back and informal, whilst also giving the atmosphere of a country house hotel.

Paris!

As we awaited being summoned for check-in, the friendly, cheerful employees gave us a welcome drink upon arrival. I am staying in a Standard Cabin on the Ruby (middle) deck. With a floor to ceiling sliding window that creates a French balcony and brings the outside in, it is a tastefully furnished, cosy room. There is a great bathroom, as well as a lot of storage. Additionally, it contains a dressing table with a mini-fridge, a safe, and tea and coffee making amenities. Additionally, each cabin is equipped with a hairdryer, an umbrella (just in case), and a refillable water bottle that is yours to keep. There was no need to pack much in the way of toiletries, since the bathrooms come with Crabtree and Evelyn products (Diamond deck cabins had L’Occitane).

The same type of cabins are available on the Diamond (upper) deck; in addition, there is a Standard Cabin grade with a fixed window on the Emerald (lower) deck, which is excellent if you don’t anticipate staying in your cabin for an extended period of time – Riviera Travel  actually offers a number of these cabins (subject to availability) with  no single supplements , so they’re great if you’re travelling alone or with a friend and just want your own space.

There are also suites, which are just huge! They have a lovely sitting area, bathroom with double basin and large shower, and a double length floor to ceiling window with sliding door.

The Suites

After a quick wander around the ship, we met for pre-dinner drinks back in the lounge before moving down to the dining room. If you book Riviera Travel’s Plus Package, then you get an aperitif voucher each evening to use. We sampled the cocktail of the day (well why not?!), all in the name of research…

european river cruises via eurostar

The buffet-style dinner we had tonight was excellent, but Georgi, the maitre d’, told us that the best is still to come! A few of the guests had experienced travel delays, so they didn’t want anyone to miss out on our first night’s supper, which would typically be the Captain’s Welcome Dinner. A vegetarian in our group who cannot eat mushrooms, and one of our group members who is gluten intolerant, both agreed that their options were great and that they had received attentive service. The eating area was spacious and had views of the Seine River on all sides. There were options for table sizes, so you could choose to be social and meet new people, or there were only tables for two if you preferred. There’s no set table each evening either, so you can be flexible, and have a change of view. Dinner was served between 7pm and 9pm, so again really flexible on when you ate.

It was time for bed, after returning to the lounge for a nightcap and some relaxing music performed by the in-house pianist, Plamen. My pillow had a small piece of chocolate on it and my bed was made up. The attention to detail are what set this experience apart.

I just so happened to sneak a peek out of my balcony and saw the Eiffel tower shining and lit up. Such a great way to begin the week! I’m going to have a great night of sleep so that when tomorrow’s first port of call comes around, I’ll be prepared.

Day 2 – Les Andelys

We had breakfast with a view and a relaxing morning after travelling through the night. There were both hot and cold options available at the breakfast buffet, along with bakery items like croissants and fresh breads.

We entered some locks, which were incredibly fascinating to observe, and then savoured our delectable buffet lunch (again with so much to choose from). The first included tour was then scheduled to begin. The coach picked us up at the ship’s pier and transported us there. Richard the Lionheart erected Château Gaillard in 1196, and the remnants of the castle provide the most breathtaking views. Following some incredible photo ops, visitors had the choice of returning to the vehicle (for the less mobile) or taking the walking tour back to the ship.

Sun Deck

Before boarding for afternoon tea, we took a short stroll around Petit Andelys, a charming town with half-timbered homes and stores in the mediaeval style, where we were in awe of the church’s stunning architecture.

This was delicious of course with a choice of sandwiches, cakes and pastries (bring stretchy clothes!). The black forest gateaux was to die for!

Then, Carmen, our fabulous cruise director, provided a brief overview of what we may expect in Rouen the following day. We checked that each other’s headsets, or ear whispers as they were also known, were operational and tuned to the appropriate channels for our group. These are a terrific concept since they ensure that everyone, including those at the back of the group, can always hear the tour leader. Some members of the group had trouble using their hearing aids with the single, over-ear speaker that was initially given. So, you can also use your own earbuds if you’d like.

Before dinner we had a Captain’s welcome drink in the lounge, where we were introduced to the management team. This would normally take place on the first evening but, as already mentioned, this was delayed as there were some passengers that experienced flight disruptions. The food is amazing tonight. I went for asparagus bouillon soup, beef rib (which just fell off the bone!), followed by chocolate lava cake. Bye bye waistline! Lol!

We moored at Rouen around 9pm, so wanted to make the most of our time here. We went for an evening stroll into the city, and found a little café bar for a Vin Blanc. Evenings are low key on board, with a musician playing in the lounge, whilst you enjoy a drink and chat with fellow passengers, and recharge ready for our walking tour of Rouen after breakfast in the morning.

Day 3 – Rouen

Wow! What a wonderful place Rouen is. A great mix of old and new with stunning cathedrals or Notre Dames… Did you know that there are over 80 Notre Dames in France? No, me Neither! Our fabulous tour guide for today, Benjamin, told us this, along with many other interesting facts and fascinating stories from history. We discovered Richard the Lionheart’s heart is buried here, and it’s also where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake! The guides were so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and had us engaged the whole time. They take great care to make sure the whole group had caught up, crossed roads safely and any questions were answered.

european river cruises via eurostar

Grim history aside, the city is just beautiful! Artisan chocolatiers, great shopping (with names like Longchamps, Kookai and Morgan to name but a few, and even a C&A!), multiple museums, stunning cafes and restaurants. I would love to come back and explore more!

Back on board it was time for lunch, as we set sail for Caudebec, where we will stay for 2 nights. I just watched the world go by from my French Balcony for a while, until it was time for afternoon tea (yes, more cake!), followed by a talk about our long day of interesting excursions and plan of action for tomorrow. I loved that we were so organised and everything was thought of for us. After some relaxation and chill out time, it was off to dinner in La Brasserie, offering a special menu in a more intimate dining room at the back of the ship. 5 courses of yummy loveliness, all included in the price! You just need to book your table at reception.

After a wonderful dinner it was off to bed, ready for an early start (8:30am coach departure).

Day 4 – Bayeux Tapestry, D-Day beaches and British Normandy Memorial

We started the day off with an early breakfast, picked up our packed lunch, and were on the coaches for 8:30am. We are moored next to another river cruise ship so we just needed to walk through the middle of their reception to get on land. Very easy, and an opportunity to be nosey too! This happened sometimes at the busier ports.

First up was Bayeux, home to the famous Bayeux Tapestry, telling the story leading up to the battle of Hastings in 1066. The 70-metre long tapestry was fascinating and impressive. Complete with pre-recorded commentary, it was fab to slowly walk along it with the explanation of the story playing on a hand-held personal phone-type device. We also had a tour of the Romanesque cathedral, which was stunning inside, with stained glass and beautiful icons.

After tucking into our packed lunch, which was a choice of sandwiches, salads, fruits and sweet treats; we headed across to the memorial cemetery for our first in a series of World War II tours. This was so hard to put into words how it made me feel. I shed a tear at the sheer volume of white headstones, reading the names and ages of those brave soldiers that fought and sacrificed their lives, so we could live ours today. I will be eternally grateful.

We then moved down Arromanches, to the landing beaches, and learned about an amazing feat of engineering put in place to get the troops ashore on 6th June 1944. Looking over at that beautiful beach, it was hard to comprehend what happened there 78 years before. Overwhelming, very humbling, but incredibly interesting. After a short film and walk around the museum, full of artefacts and explanations of what happened, we headed up to the newly opened British Normandy Memorial. Again, this stunning memorial left us speechless and emotional seeing the volume of names, and visiting the site where these souls gave the ultimate sacrifice for their King and Country.

I write this whilst on the long drive (2 hours) to Caudebec back to the ship. I’m so thankful to have had this opportunity to visit those incredible places today and anyone who is thinking of visiting, go for it. This is the perfect way to do so.

Back at the ship it will be a quick change and ready for another sumptuous dinner and relaxed evening on board to reflect on what I have experienced today.

Day 5 – Honfleur

This gorgeous fishing village was a hive of activity, and we visited on market day (Saturday)

One side of the market sells clothes, accessories and crafts, and the other was for allllll the food. It was bustling!

The harbour was lined with restaurants and cafés. The half-timbered buildings and reflections they make on the water were absolutely beautiful. It’s no wonder Eugine Boudin was inspired to paint, giving way to the birth of impressionism.

european river cruises via eurostar

The small cobbled streets were just so beautiful, I could have wandered around all day. It wouldn’t be right to leave without sampling some Calvados (Normandy brandy), so a café stop was required. This local liquor is not for the faint hearted!

Back on board for lunch and the ice-cream social in the lounge. There’s also time for a sunbathe on the upper deck, and a little dip in the pool before dinner. There were plenty of loungers and outdoor seating to just sit back, watch the world go, and soak up the glorious sunshine (there’s shade too for those that wanted). The little golf pitch and putt section was fun too.

Entertainment this evening was a quiz with a difference. In order to get extra points, you had to dance to the music questions! All the guests got involved, and it was great fun.

Day 6 – Vernon & Monet’s Garden

Today was a very short drive to the home of impressionist artist Claude Monet.

The stunning garden bursting with colour was a gardener’s delight, with many guests saying this was the highlight of their trip.

The house is open to explore, and is full of replica prints. It offers lovely views down onto the gardens from the upper floors. The walk around the waterlily pond made it feel like you were in the famous painting.

european river cruises via eurostar

Giverny is a beautiful village with many art galleries and museums with cafes to sit back and admire the view. You could also venture up to see the tomb where Monet and his family are buried.

We had 3 hours to explore the house and gardens, which was required as it got very busy as the morning progressed. I would suggest exploring the house first, then onto the waterlily pond and gardens.

Back on board for lunch and free time to explore Vernon before our information talk on disembarkation. They do this today so as to not take time away from our time in Paris tomorrow. Some of the gang took the bikes along the cycle path and the rest took time to chill for the afternoon. It was so relaxing.

Dinner was delicious (as always!), followed by entertainment from the crew. It was a lot of fun, and you can tell from their faces they really enjoyed it. There were songs, dances and a little cheeky joke story from hotel director Roland. Such a funny guy… and I can’t mention him without letting you know there was a boutique gift shop on board (open 7pm-11pm). He might have mentioned this a few times… Lol! After a dance, and some drinks, it was off to bed. After all, it’s Paris tomorrow!

Day 7 – Paris

So here it is, the last day… and we start with a panoramic coach tour of Paris ticking off all the major sights and monuments of the city.

After getting dropped off at Jardin de Luxembourg, we decided to use our free time to go on our own walking tour. Most of the group re-joined the coach for an Eiffel Tower photo stop, before having lunch back on board.

Our self-guided walking tour (8 miles round trip back to the ship) took us via the Pantheon, Notre Dame, the Louvre, Place de la Concorde and the Eiffel Tower. It was safe to say we were all exhausted by the time we got back to the ship and, in hindsight, maybe we should have taken the Metro or a taxi back, but you live and learn hey! At least we burned a few of the calories off!

A lovely last evening was ahead of us, with a Captain’s Farewell Dinner and drinks reception. What a finale the dessert was! Baked Alaska brought in by the crew with music and sparklers.

european river cruises via eurostar

Our Captain then surprised us with a sail up towards the Eiffel tower to watch the light show that goes off every hour from 10pm- 1am. A truly wonderful end to an amazing trip. I was amazed when the wheelhouse collapsed to enable us to get under the low bridge. No standing on top deck, or you would lose your head!

This evening we were given an envelope for gratuities in our cabin. These are totally at your discretion, and anonymous as there was a box on the reception desk to pop your envelope in. Suggestions are made on the letter that is left in your cabin, along with a little parting gift and your pillow chocolate. Whilst I’m on the subject of tipping… the envelopes in the cabin are purely for the crew, and are split between them all, so nobody is forgotten. The Riviera Travel staff had their own envelopes if you wanted to leave them a tip too, but again totally at your discretion. You can also tip the drivers and local guides, if you feel they did a wonderful job. If you don’t have any Euros left (like I didn’t!), the tips for the ship’s crew can be charged to your onboard account – just ask at reception and they will add this for you.

Day 8 – Au Revoir!

european river cruises via eurostar

On our final morning we had to leave our suitcases outside our cabin doors by 9am, complete with colour-coded labels to differentiate between each flight or Eurostar departure. We were then able to chill in the lounge, or up on deck, until we were called for our coach at 10am.

Those leaving on the later flights were able to go ashore, and were even provided with a light lunch in the lounge. The coach took us back to Gare Du Nord, offering up our last sights of Paris, before joining our Eurostar train back to London. Security and passport control took a while as we cleared both French and UK borders but was very straightforward and that was a wrap.

Final Thoughts

If anyone is thinking of taking a river cruise, I can highly recommend it. Such a great, relaxing way to see so much with very little effort and only unpacking once. I feel culturally richer, relaxed and knowledgeable on all things Riviera river cruising so get in touch to book your own adventure. This is a great product with so many inclusions. Riviera Travel were fantastic throughout, and the cruise is such amazing value for money without compromising on the quality and experience. I would recommend upgrading to the Riviera Plus cabins and drinks package, if you like a glass or 2 of wine with your meals. It just adds to the experience.

With holiday happiness guaranteed, they even bring you home if you’re not happy by day 2, with a full refund!! But with a 99% score on Reevoo you can see the guests just love them! In fact, I spoke to many guests on board who are on their 3rd, 4th, 5th and more Riviera Travel holidays, and it’s easy to see why! With no surcharges and a price guarantee it’s best to get your booking in early as these ships only hold less than 150 passengers (slightly more on the River Douro).

Thank you Riviera Travel for such an invaluable experience and thoroughly enjoyable week, I will never forget.

Au Revoir (for now)

Take the Eurostar from London to join a European river cruise by rail

Travelling between Europe's great cities on a river cruise, sailing through the ever-changing scenery along the way, is the perfect choice for travellers who like to be ashore every day, exploring grand capitals and rural villages independently or with expert guides.

Europe's interconnectedness goes beyond its historic waterways; the continent's rail network is extensive, and surprisingly easy to navigate. Whether you're concerned about long queues at the airport, looking to lessen the environmental impact of your holidays, or simply wish to experience the joy of travelling by train, it's easy to join a river cruise by rail. We've picked some of our favourite river cruise itineraries, some common and some less so, to show just how easy it is.

Dutch & Belgian Waterways

Crystal's 'Tulips & Windmills' itinerary is a springtime delight that explores the Dutch and Belgian waterways, with time in fashionable Antwerp and captivating Ghent, along with the vibrancy of the bulb fields during tulip season. This 7-night Amsterdam round-trip, which begins and ends with an overnight on board in the Dutch capital, operates on several different departure dates throughout April.

Train travel to Amsterdam involves a convenient direct Eurostar service from London St Pancras, arriving just a short walk (or shorter taxi) from where the river cruise ships dock. At around 4 hours from city centre to city centre it rivals the convenience of flying. On the return take a high-speed service from Amsterdam to Brussels Midi station, then check in for the Eurostar back to London.

Canal in Ghent

Rhine, Main & Moselle

One of the great rivers of Europe, the Rhine flows from the Swiss Alps through France, Germany and the Netherlands, passing vineyards, fairytale castles and picturesque little villages. There are plenty of itineraries to choose from, and Crystal Cruises' 7-night 'Romantic Rhine' voyage from Amsterdam to Basel, departing on 30th August 2021, is a particularly fine example.

This cruise includes time in the beautiful cities of Cologne and Strasbourg, along with pretty riverside towns such as Rüdesheim and Mannheim. An overnight in Amsterdam at the start of the journey means you can choose from any of the three direct daily Eurostar services from London. Returning from Basel, a mid-morning TGV departure to Paris Gare de Lyon then the Eurostar from Paris Gare du Nord will have you at London St Pancras before 6pm.

Petite France, Strasbourg

More unusually, AmaWaterways operate a handful Amsterdam to Luxembourg itineraries along the Rhine and Moselle, with the latter usually only included as a side trip on a Rhine cruise. These 7-night departures include the 3rd August 2021 'Vineyards of the Rhine and Moselle' sailing, travelling through wine country with tailored excursions to sample the local delights.

The itinerary begins with an overnight in Amsterdam, making your outbound train travel easy, and the return journey leaves Luxembourg City just after 10am on the TGV to Paris Gare de l'Est, then the Eurostar from Paris Gare du Nord will have you at London St Pancras by 5pm.

Moselle river flowing through Cochem, Germany

Dordogne, Garonne & Gironde

Another region famed for its wine is Bordeaux, where the Dordogne and the Garonne rivers meet to form the Gironde estuary. The city of Bordeaux, with its pretty UNESCO-listed 18th-century old town, is the start and end point for cruises operated by several cruise lines, allowing you to visit the nearby vineyards of Pauillac, Saint-Emilion and the Médoc.

One such sailing is Uniworld's 27th June 2021 'Brilliant Bordeaux' departure, which includes the cost of your train (or airfare) as standard. The journey from London St Pancras travels via Paris, with a change between Paris Gare du Nord and Paris Montparnasse required. Leave London just before 8am and you'll arrive in Bordeaux by 4pm. Set off on your return journey just after 11am and you'll arrive back in London before 5pm.

Saint Emilion church, France

Rhône & Saône

In southern France the Rhône, fed by its tributary the Saône, flows southward to the Mediterranean Sea, passing through the vineyards of Burgundy and the hills of Provence. A common route sees ships sailing between the French culinary hotspot of Lyon and the former papal stronghold of Avignon, travelling through stunning countryside and enchanting towns that captivated artist such as Van Gogh.

Uniworld's 'Burgundy & Provence' itinerary operates from March to October, including a 4th July 2021 sailing from Avignon to Lyon. The journey from London to Avignon departs at either 7am or 11am, arriving just before 2.30pm or 6.30pm. The return from Lyon departs at 11am and arrives just after 4pm. Both routes are via Lille, where only a platform change is necessary, and you'll be travelling on board Eurostar and the TGV.

Uniworld's SS Catherine in Tain L'Hermitage, France

AmaWaterways offer a more unusual journey in this region, featuring more of the Saône, including the Roman history around Chalon-sur Saône and the charming town of Tournus. Beginning with a 3-night pre-cruise stay in Geneva, the 7-night 'Essence of Burgundy and Provence' cruise starts from Chalon-sur Saône, visiting Gothic monasteries and Benedictine abbeys, as well as the highlights of Lyon, Avignon and everything in between. Then continue on to Arles, considered one of the most beautiful cities in France. Here you will disembark and travel on to Barcelona for a 3-night stay.

This itinerary runs in both directions between March and November. The 21st June 2021 departure begins in Geneva, reached by Eurostar to Paris Gard du Nord, then TGV from Paris Gare du Lyon to Geneva, departing just before 8am and arriving at 5.30pm. Returning from Barcelona you'll take a TGV Duplex direct to Paris Gare de Lyon then the Eurostar from Paris Gard du Nord to London St Pancras. Leave at 6am to reach London before 5pm, or have a more leisurely morning and leave just after 10am to reach London before 9pm.

Place de la Republique, Arles, France

Many of these journeys travel through Paris, where a change of stations is required, and you should allow two hours between trains. Getting from one station to another is easy; either take the Metro or jump in a taxi, for a journey likely to take no more than 30 minutes. Grab a coffee and a bite to eat and you'll soon be on your way again. We've highlighted the best options based on the specific sailings listed, always arriving at a convenient time for your first evening on board, but we can tailor your trip to include overnight stays in cities en-route and offer alternative routings where possible.

Gare de Lyon, Paris

Finally, although the Mundy Cruising office is conveniently close to St Pancras station, we know that most people will have to travel to get to central London, and an early morning departure might not be convenient. We highly recommend starting your holiday early with a stay at the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel London; this beautiful hotel, which first opened in 1873, harks back to a golden age of train travel, and provides the perfect start to a rail journey across Europe.

From railway to river: Eurostar river cruise special

Got a customer who doesn’t want to fly? with the quick and easy Eurostar, a river cruise on the continent is a superb option

T here are many reasons why people choose to take an ex-UK cruise — but the most common one we’ve heard is that they avoid airports altogether. Some passengers simply don’t want the hassle of flying; others are unable to fly  at all.

But staying grounded doesn’t totally limit travel options or mean lengthy, complicated journeys as some would have you believe. Not only are there several hundred cruise departures from UK ports in 2016, there are many more European river cruises that can be reached without boarding a plane.

While ex-UK cruises, of course, refer to itineraries that depart from UK ports, it seems an oversight to ignore the ever-growing river cruise market when you have a customer looking for a no-fly option.

Paris is just over two hours from London St Pancras International on the high-speed Eurostar, as is Brussels, where Thalys trains go on to Amsterdam (excitingly, as of 2017, a direct train will run between London and the Dutch capital).

The company’s additional stops make things easier still. In Kent, there are Ebbsfleet International and Ashford International stations, as well as Calais-Fréthun and Lille-Europe across the English Channel, offering connecting trains at each point.

Indeed, Europe’s vast network of railway lines and waterways combine to allow travellers enormous freedom to explore the entire continent, from cities to villages and vineyards.

Whether your customers want an extended holiday   or a short Parisian getaway with a river cruise included, the Eurostar has made things very easy indeed.

Eurostar

London links St Pancras International, which combines a striking red-brick Victorian façade with impressive modern interiors, renovated to the cost of £800million in 2007, is fantastic place to begin an adventure. Holidaymakers can be in Paris, at the Gare du Nord station, in just two hours and 17 minutes. For those living in and around London, in Kent, or even further afield, it’s a no brainer when compared with air travel. In the time it would take to check in, shuffle through security and board an aeroplane, you could have arrived and already be indulging in a bit of Parisian café culture.

Of course, the French capital isn’t somewhere you want to be leaving in a hurry, so before your thoughts turn to the Seine, which snakes through the city, it’s worth looking at pre and post stays (remember, London, too, shouldn’t simply be seen as somewhere to depart from, especially for those travelling from farther afield).

But while the Seine doesn’t offer as many itineraries as the Danube or Rhine (see below), it does offer the unmissable chance to see Paris, perhaps the world’s prettiest city, from the water, as well as trips that include stops at Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny and the palace and grounds of Versailles.

Tauck, for example, offers a 14-night trip that starts and ends in London, taking in Paris and the above, as well as Rouen and Aubers-sur-Oise on theSeine, as well as a visit to the beaches of Normandy. Avalon Waterways also promotes train travel with its eight-day Paris to Paris Seine cruise, which also offers an excursion to the Normandy beaches, while its extended 11-day cruise comes with three nights in London at the end.

Eurostar

Of course, given Europe’s excellent network of railways — which stretch beyond the continent itself — customers can head where they want. But for those looking to take a river cruise, Amsterdam is the place to be. While a direct train is still a year away, the journey (which takes four hours and 44 minutes with a connection in Brussels) is worth it for those who don’t want to fly.

There are any number of itineraries, many of which begin and end in Amsterdam, making the return simple. Viking River Cruises, for example, offers a 10-day Tulips & Windmills cruise, which takes in the lively Dutch capital and Kinderdijk as well as Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges in Belgium.

Similarly, Riviera Travel has its Amsterdam, Volendam & the Dutch Bulbfields River Cruise, which includes a canal tour in Amsterdam and then a visit to Keukenhof Park, the 19th-century tulip park, which is as expansive as it is beautiful. On some itineraries, the line also offers customers supplemented travel from regional stations to St Pancras. One great option is the Rhine & Moselle cruise. Riviera Travel offers a coach transfer from Brussels, where the Eurostar arrives, over the border to Germany, where the cruise begins.
