Apple Releases Safari 16 With Tab Group Start Pages, Cross-Device Syncing for Website Settings, Strong Password Updates and More

Apple today released Safari 16, with the new update bringing some macOS Ventura features to macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur while we wait for the October launch of the new operating system.

Safari 16 introduces new features, even faster performance, and improved security, such as: - Tab Group start pages let you add different background images and favorites for each Tab Group - Pinned tabs in Tab Groups enable you to pin frequently visited websites for each Tab Group - Tabs in the sidebar let you see a list view of your open tabs - Settings you've set for specific websites now sync across devices - Strong password editing lets you adjust strong passwords to meet website-specific requirements - Some features may not be available for all regions, or on all Apple devices.

The update also addresses several WebKit vulnerabilities that could track users through web extensions, lead to arbitrary code execution, and lead to UI spoofing. None of these vulnerabilities were known to have been actively exploited, but it is still worth updating to the new browser to get the Safari 16 functions.

Honest question: why does Apple always provide older versions of macOS with the most recent Safari, but not any other app? Why the exception for Safari? They could just include it in a regular macOS update instead of separating it.

Safari is sadly chromium based

Safari 16.1 adds support for passkeys, Apple Pencil hover, and more

Safari 16.1 is also here with today's software updates.

macOS Ventura isn't the only thing new for Mac users today.

In addition to the release of the latest generation of macOS, Apple has also introduced Safari 16.1 to users. The newest version of Safari, as well as being available on the Mac, is also available for iOS 16.1, iPadOS 16.1 , macOS Monterey, and macOS Big Sur.

One of the most significant updates with Safari 16.1 is support for passkeys , a new security feature that is rolling out across Apple, Google, and Microsoft that hopes to replace passwords in the future. Passkeys can be used on Macs running macOS Ventura, macOS Monterey, and macOS Big Sur. The password feature is also available on iPhones and iPads running iOS 16 and iPad OS 16.

Another big update with Safari 16.1 is the upgrade to Web Push functionality which allows websites and web apps to send push notifications to users without the need for the browser to even be open. It's a widely used piece of web functionality that, with today's update, brings Safari in line with other web browsers. Just like other push notifications, Web Push notifications can be managed in the Mac's Notification Center.

Even the iPad Pro gets some love with Safari 16.1

Safari 16.1 also supports one of the features announced for the new M2 iPad Pro . When Apple announced the M2 iPad Pro lineup last week, it revealed a new feature called Apple Pencil hover, which will detect the 2nd generation Apple Pencil up to 12mm away from the display. With Safari 16.1, iPad Pro users will be able to use the feature to interact with links, animations, and more on the iPad's built-in browser.

IOS 16.1, iPad OS 16.1, macOS Ventura, watchOS 9.1, and tvOS 16. 1 were all released today, adding a ton of new features across Apple’s software experience.

Web Push for macOS Ventura

Animated avif, new viewport sizes on ipados, hover on ipados with apple pencil, scroll to text fragment, screen capture improvements, fixes and polish.

Today, Safari 16 arrives for macOS Ventura and iPadOS 16. Numbered Safari 16.1, this release is also available for iOS 16, macOS Monterey, and macOS Big Sur.

To update to Safari 16.1 on macOS Monterey or macOS Big Sur, go to System Preferences → Software Update → More info. To update your Mac to macOS Ventura , go to System Settings → Software Update. To update to Safari 16.1 on iPad and iPhone, update iPadOS 16 and iOS 16 in Settings → General → Software Update.

Features that shipped in September’s Safari 16.0 include Container Queries, Subgrid, Web Inspector Extensions, Flexbox Inspector, Offset Path, Overscroll Behavior, Shared Workers, Shadow Realms, resolution media query, :has(:target) , text-align-last , animation-composition , discrete animation, accessibility improvements for display: contents , improved VoiceOver performance, additional Apple Pay support, new Web Extension APIs, Manifest version 3 support, and much more. Safari 16.1 brings all of these features to iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura.

Now let’s look at the new features and fixes arriving with Safari 16.1.

Safari 16.1 for macOS Ventura brings support for Web Push to Safari. Websites and web apps can now remotely send notifications using the same standards supported in other browsers — Push API and Notifications API , along with Service Workers — and deliver those notifications even when Safari isn’t running.

In Safari, users of your website or web app opt into notifications by first indicating interest through a user gesture — such as clicking a button. Then they’ll be prompted to give permission for your site or app to send notifications. Users can view and manage notifications in Notifications Center. And they can customize styles and turn notifications off per website in Notifications Settings.

If you’ve already implemented Web Push for your web app or website using industry best practices, it will automatically work in Safari. You do not need to be an Apple Developer Program member. However, if you’ve excluded Safari through browser detection, you’ll need to switch to feature detection to get it working. Web Push in Safari uses the same Apple Push Notification service that powers native push on all Apple devices. If you tightly manage push endpoints on your server, be sure to allow URLs from any subdomain of push.apple.com.

Safari 16.0 brought support for AVIF still images to iOS 16. Safari 16.1 adds support for AVIF animated image sequences. Now both still and moving images saved in the AVIF format are supported on iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura.

In September, iOS 16 introduced passkeys. Now with Safari 16.1, passkeys are supported everywhere Safari 16 is supported — including iPadOS 16, macOS Monterey, macOS Big Sur, and macOS Ventura, as well as iOS 16. Passkeys provide users with an incredibly easy way to log in, while delivering a profound increase in security .

The technology that makes passkeys possible is defined in open standards from the FIDO Alliance and the W3C, including the WebAuthn standard, which already has widespread support in browsers . Passkeys are an industry-wide effort, and “passkeys” is a common noun, to be used by anyone. You can offer passkeys alongside your existing authentication options. First, teach your backend to store public keys and issue authentication challenges. Then, on your website or web app, offer passkeys to users by adopting the APIs for creating new passkeys and allowing users to sign in with their passkey. If your website or web app already supports using a platform authenticator with WebAuthn, there are a few things to note as you add support for passkeys. Make sure you aren’t limiting signing in to the device that saved the passkey; that is, don’t use a cookie to “remember” that a user set up a key on a particular device. Also, make sure the username fields in your existing sign-in forms are compatible with AutoFill by adopting “conditional mediation”. Finally, start to refer to passkeys, and treat them as a primary way to sign in.

iPadOS 16 introduces an entirely new multitasking experience with Stage Manager. This means browser windows on iPadOS can be resized to many different viewport sizes and aspect ratios. Responsive web design techniques, including the use of CSS media queries and container queries, are key. There’s never been a single “tablet size” for layout, and now that’s more true than ever.

The new iPad Pro supports hover with Apple Pencil. In web browsers, users see hover states for links, animations, and more. Hover on iPadOS is yet another example of how structuring code using feature detection , instead of device or UA detection , helps future-proof websites and web apps.

Safari 16.1 adds support for Scroll to Text Fragment , making it possible to include a text directive for finding a text fragment as part of a URL. When a user navigates to a URL that includes such a directive, the browser scrolls the text fragment into view and marks it with a persistent highlight.

On macOS Ventura, Safari 16.1 adds support for capturing a specific Safari window with getDisplayMedia() . Calling getDisplayMedia in response to a user action will show the user a prompt asking for permission to allow the sharing of their screen or a specific window of an application, including Safari windows. The MediaStream provided by getDisplayMedia contains a video stream of the screen or window that can be recorded, or used as part of a WebRTC session.

Safari 16.1 adds support for web-to-App Store advertising with SKAdNetwork. It also adds support for WebDriver Wheel input source and actions. Safari Web Inspector adds support for the color picker to pick a color from any pixel on the screen.

Safari 16.1 also contains bug fixes and feature polish. Many of these fixes improve the Interop 2022 score for Safari. The test pass rate for Safari 16.1 is 93.3%. That’s calculated from 84.3 points of a possible 90. The remaining 10 points are joint “investigation projects”.

• Fixed the ignored CSS color property on <select> elements.
• Fixed hiding icons on <input type="search"> when appearance: textfield is set.
• Fixed applying the readonly attribute to the correct <input> types and <textarea> element.
• Fixed the content width for <input type="search"> to not include decorations.
• Fixed input type state changes to correctly handle missing or empty string value attributes.
• Fixed form.submit() to submit a single form to multiple frames concurrently.
• Fixed cloning a <textarea> to not set the initial selection at the end of the text content.
• Fixed not firing a select event when setting a selection range results in no change to the selection.
• Fixed some AVIF images not rendering because of their container format.
• Fixed preventing background propagation on <html> with any containment.
• Fixed COOP same-origin breaking forms after a back navigation.
• Fixed script-src-elem CSP in Workers.
• Fixed focus behavior for shadow DOM and the <dialog> element to align with specifications.

Does Mac Safari(16.1) support PWA to add website to home screen?

I have updated my safari to the latest version 16.1 on Mac and try to find the entrance to add web page to home screen. But I still couldn't find it.

Is there anyone know if Mac Safari(16.1) support to add web page to home screen currently?

safari 16.1 won't open

After updating to Ventura 13.0, the included vers. of Safari (16.1?) won't open and the icon is missing. This on a Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017 on an external drive. Tried multiple installs, and even got the same results on two other external HDs when updating to Ventura. Also, MS Outlook launches but crashes after a few seconds. The rest of MS Office works fine, so it's just Safari and Outlook that are broken.

Missing my favorite browser and my email app is a huge bummer.

BTW, no such problems on a smaller iMac of the same vintage.

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

With Safari and Outlook no longer opening after upgrading macOS, if you have not done so already restart your Mac. You can check with Microsoft for an update for Outlook and if necessary, install a new copy of the app.

Disable any security software installed and disconnect from any VPNs.

Safari is built into macOS. Restart your computer in safe mode. Safe mode limits login items that are allowed to run while also running a health check. If the behavior continues here, reinstalling macOS would be the best step.

1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the  Shift key  as your Mac starts up.

2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.

I had tried all that, and more, prior to posting.

Ended up erasing the entire HD and starting anew with the previous version of OS X. It's taken me days (of wasted time) to get back to where I was prior to "updating" to Ventura.

Easily the worst OS update for me since the intro of OS X, possibly even earlier.

I don't imagine I'll be trying to update that machine ever again.

iOS 18 could supercharge Safari with more than just Apple's AI features

• Safari on iOS 18 and macOS 15 may pack an AI-powered summarization feature that leverages an on-device LLM.
• It may also include a new web content eraser, which would enable users to delete webpage elements and sections, such as ad banners.
• Apple may upgrade Visual Look Up in 2025 to include support for identifying consumer products in images — not just pets, plants, and landmarks.

It’s no secret that iOS 18 will offer some major new features powered by artificial intelligence. In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook explicitly stated that the company would be revealing its AI goods at some point this year. While the specifics of these AI upgrades are generally vague now, it appears that Safari on iOS 18 may pack some of them.

According to information obtained by AppleInsider , Safari on iOS 18 and macOS 15 will receive a major update. For starters, users may be able to rely on AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization, similar to what the Arc browser currently offers. The on-device Ajax large language model (LLM) would reportedly scan the text to identify the main topics and summarize web content accordingly.

Interestingly, Safari version 18 may also introduce a web eraser, allowing users to remove certain elements from the sites they’re browsing. It will reportedly support the removal of ad banners, images, text, and other sections, potentially sherlocking 1Blocker in the process. The best part is that Safari may remember what elements a user has erased, even after they close the tab or app. This would retain their preferred layouts per each modified site indefinitely.

Otherwise, Safari 18 on macOS 15 may also include an updated address bar UI that matches that of iPadOS. Through this design tweak, Apple would further streamline Safari’s user interface across its different operating systems.

The report also points to an upgraded Visual Look Up feature that may debut in 2025. If it comes to fruition, users will be able to identify consumer products in images across the different apps. For reference, Visual Look Up is currently limited to images of pets, plants, and landmarks.

It’s worth mentioning that Apple engineers are reportedly testing these features internally. So, naturally, there’s a chance that some (or all) of them won’t make it to the public iOS 18 and macOS 15 beta builds, let alone the stable releases. Ultimately, we will get a definite answer on June 10, when Apple officially previews iOS 18 and macOS 15 during the main WWDC24 keynote.

Apple is reportedly planning big updates to Safari as part of iOS 18 and macOS 15 later this year. According to a report on Tuesday, the changes will include a new AI-powered tool called “Intelligent Search” with page summarization, a “Web Eraser” feature, and more.

iOS 18: New Safari features

The report, which comes from Marko Zivkovic at Apple Insider , cautions that “exact implementation” of these features “remains fuzzy.” We’d treat these claims with skepticism for the time being.

According to Zivkovic, Apple is planning a redesigned controls menu for Safari’s address bar that “consolidates old and new page control tools” in a central location. One of the new tools is reportedly something called “Intelligent Search.”

This feature, which is not enabled by default in test builds of Safari 18, can be activated from the new menu in the address bar. From there, the tool will “identify topics and key phrases within a webpage” and generate a summary of the page. The report speculates that Apple is “striving to deliver text summarization alongside Safari 18 later this year,” but again, the specific details are “fuzzy.”

Arc from The Browser Company  also combines a variety of AI features with web browsing, including page summarization options.

Safari 18 in iOS 18 and macOS 15 will also reportedly include something called “Web Eraser.” This feature is “designed to allow users to remove, or erase, specific portions of web pages,” according to Zivkovic.

Using the Web Eraser feature, users could choose to remove certain elements from a webpage like ads, images, and more. It’s a functionality already offered by certain third-party ad blockers, but Apple is apparently working on its own first-party implementation for iOS 18 and macOS 15.

Notably, any changes you make to a webpage would apply each time you visited that page. “This means that Safari will remember the changes even after the original tab or window has been closed,” Zivkovic says.

When visiting a web page with previously erased content, Safari will inform the user that the page has been modified to reflect their desired changes. The browser will also give the user the option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its initial, unaltered state.

You always could install alternative browsers on the iPhone, you weren't required to stay with Safari . You just had to know that the alternatives existed and, perhaps more seriously, all the alternatives still had to depend on the same Apple WebKit that Safari does.

Now that the European Union has mandated that Apple support other browsers, a potentially good outcome is that the makers of Chrome and Firefox could abandon WebKit and use their own browsing engine.

They've made some noise that they might.

The developers behind both Chrome and Firefox have repeatedly complained that they consider WebKit a straightjacket. Since the EU rules, there have even been hints that accept engineering two versions of their apps, one for within the EU and one for the rest of the world.

It would take the resources of such large developers to make that possible, even if it could ever be called practical. And in the end, it's deeply unlikely that the average iPhone user would be able to tell alternative browser engine apart.

The only visible difference any EU user is going to see is that Apple is promote other browers . Now when you first go into Safari after updating to iOS 17.4 in any of the EU's 27 member states, you get shown a list of alternatives to Apple's browser.

"It starts from you clicking Safari," Jon von Tetzchner, CEO and cofounder of Vivaldi, told Wired . "Which, I think all of us agree, that's the wrong spot."

Tetzchner says the user should be made to make the choice when setting up their phone, just as happens with Google and Android. That ignores, though, that the gigantic majority of people upgrading to iOS 17.4 will be coming from iOS 17.3 and would clearly relish the idea of schlepping through a whole setup procedure again.

Also, a vaunted benefit of Android is that you have choice, but it's not as if the iPhone denies you that. Instead, the iPhone gives you something to be going on with until you want an alternative, where Android expects you to know the difference between browsers, and to have opinions about it.

Then as Wired points out, Google's method hasn't always been that preferable to anyone. In 2019, it did a similar thing in adding a selection of default search engines, but rivals initially got listed only by paying to be there.

By comparison, Apple waits until you want to use a web browser, and then when you tap Safari like you've been doing since the Middle Ages, it offers you a list of alternatives. No one has paid to be on that list.

Instead, Apple lists the top-used browsers — and specifically the top-used browsers in whichever EU country you are in. There are at present a total of 15 possible browsers, though not all are available in all countries.

At launch of iOS 17.4, for instance, Tetzchner's Vivalidi browser has earned a spot in 13 out of the EU's 27 states.

So the list includes browsers based on popularity in a given territory, but then it also randomizes the list. In theory, then, any browser available to any EU user has the same chance of being selected over Safari.

Not all developers are unhappy

"We believe that Apple's approach to presenting the browser choice screen is fair and acceptable," says Andrew Moroz Frost, whose Aloha Browser is available in 26 out of the 27 countries. Frost particularly lauds how Apple lists the browsers in random order.

Apple also doesn't present the list and "accidentally" have Safari already selected. The user has to make a positive choice for what they want, even if that is to stay with Safari.

There is an issue that the average user has no reason to know the difference between the browsers, since their interest is in the sites they visit rather than the app they use to get there.

What that also means is that this list popping up when you just want to launch Safari could be as much of an irritant as it could be a benefit. The extraordinarily enormous majority of iPhone users in the EU are going to bat aside that list and just carry on using Safari as they always have.

Which is another example of how, for all that the EU says it demands choice for users' sake, the whole Digital Markets Act is more choice for choice's sake. Ultimately, the changes forced on Apple will be of more benefit to businesses than to users.

Those businesses just got a boost from Apple on every iPhone in the European Union. And yet some developers are acting like that's a bad thing.

People are always saying things like “more choice is a good thing!” until they need to shop for paint. Who doesn’t love having to go back and forth looking at samples that are so close to each other that if they are held 5 feet apart the differences are indecipherable? Remember the good old days of going into a place to buy a stereo and having to choose between 25 different receivers, choosing a CD player from a handful of different vendors that each had multiple options of CD players available, deciding on an amp and then listening to your choice of music on the plethora of speakers that were available all while being told there were more they could provide that weren’t currently in stock? What a great time! Personally, I don’t know anyone that has mentioned they wished there was more choice in the web browser market. As the article mentions l, most people will make that choice once and never think about it again.

The idea that some want people to go through a new set-up process in their old phone for the sake of browser choice is having the cure be worse than the disease.  The Apple approach of having a Safari start-up be the trigger for this seems better for the user.

Come and try living in the UK where we’ve lost freedom of movement, the right to live, and work and stay in other EU countries without much thought. We’ve got tariffs, queues, delays, next to no customs checks so people can send any old kind of rubbish here, duplication of regulations, reduced or no access to useful EU wide information that we had before. The list goes on and on and on. I’d be back in the regulated EU in a heartbeat if I could.

Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome are already being drowned in new AI features, so we suppose it was inevitable that Apple would also try to shove some AI activities into its default browser. With Apple reportedly jumping on the AI hype train for iOS 18 (though getting on at the caboose end rather than the passenger car) the company at the end of 1 Infinite Loop may try to shove AI summaries and browser assistants into Safari in a move that’s reminiscent of the existing Arc Browser . Unlike the competition, this time Apple could be powering it all from the device itself, rather than the cloud.

More interestingly, the browser could let you highlight and erase whole sections of web pages. Tired of the banner ads on top of Gizmodo’s site? If the rumors are true, Safari might have the ability to mask that. It all comes from a report from Apple Insider based on the latest builds of Safari 18 . The controls hidden in the latest test models of the browser seem to indicate Safari would paper over sections of a site you don’t want to see. Better yet, it would remember your selections and re-erase the same parts of the page if you come back to it later. You would have the option of reverting the page to its original state.

That feature is akin to apps like 1Blocker on Safari with iPhone or uBlock Origin on other browsers, two apps that allow you to apply cosmetic filters on offending ads. 1Blocker in particular tells Safari what parts of the page to open, which also may help increase the speed at which the page loads.

Of course, advertisers and online publishers would not be happy about any built-in ad-blocking features. The click-centric publishing model is already flailing with the greater push for AI in Google Search .

But this is still extremely early, and code found inside Safari 18 does not necessarily point to how Apple plans to roll out these features, if at all. But AI upgrades to Safari feel inevitable. The so-called “Intelligent Search” would use a large language model to find key phrases and words in an article as the basis for its summary. AI summaries are already available in Edge through the Copilot feature, and Chrome’s Gemini-powered assistant can perform a similar task.

AI features may be Apple’s best bet if it wants to take a hammer to Google’s search and ad monopoly. That’s what Microsoft has been doing with its Edge browser and Bing search, but so far Google Search and Chrome remain dominant in their categories. Apple is also going all-in on AI with its upcoming releases. The M4 chip , expected to debut along with the new OLED iPad Pro , will reportedly have a better neural processor than its previous M-series CPUs. Similarly, the next iPhone 16 is said to have a bunch of AI capabilities with the promise of running some of these language models or art generators on-device.

We’ll likely hear more about this when WWDC rolls around on June 10 .

Apple's 'incredibly private' Safari is not so private in Europe

Apple's grudging accommodation of European antitrust rules by allowing third-party app stores on iPhones has left users of its Safari browser exposed to potential web activity tracking.

Developers Talal Haj Bakry and Tommy Mysk looked into the way Apple implemented the installation process for third-party software marketplaces on iOS with Safari, and concluded Cupertino's approach is particularly shoddy.

tl;dr: The way Apple has added support for third-party app stores lets any website, when visited by Safari on iOS at least, to ping a chosen approved software marketplace with a unique per-user identifier. That means as users move from website to website, or use a website, these sites can quietly disclose that activity to a non-Apple app store – revealing the sort of things individual netizens find interesting. That info can be used for targeted app promotions, ads, and so on. This appears to apply to iOS 17.4 users in the EU. Whether anyone will exploit this in the wild remains to be seen – but the potential is there.

"Our testing shows that Apple delivered this feature with catastrophic security and privacy flaws," wrote Bakry and Mysk in an advisory published over the weekend.

Apple – which advertises Safari as " incredibly private " – evidently has undermined privacy among European Union Safari users through a marketplace-kit: URI scheme that potentially allows approved third-party app stores to follow those users around the web.

A URI scheme is a way of determining how a particular network request gets handled. A website offering an alternative software marketplace can include a button that, when tapped in Safari, launches a marketplace-kit: request that is handled by a MarketplaceKit process on the EU user's iPhone. This process, built into iOS 17.4 by Apple, then reaches out to the back-end servers of the approved marketplace to complete the installation of that store's app on the phone.

The trouble is, any site can trigger a marketplace-kit: request. On EU iOS 17.4 devices, that will cause a unique per-user identifier to be fired off by Safari to an approved marketplace's servers, leaking the fact that the user was just visiting that site. This happens even if Safari is in private browsing mode. The marketplace's servers can reject the request, which can also include a custom payload, passing more info about the user to the alternative store. This is all illustrated in the video below.

In addition to Apple's Safari, two other iOS browsers currently support third-party app stores in Europe: Brave and Ecosia.

Apple doesn't allow third-party app stores in most parts of the world, citing purported privacy and security concerns – and presumably interest in sustaining its ability to collect commissions for software sales.

But Apple has been designated as a "gatekeeper" under Europe's Digital Markets Act (DMA) for iOS, the App Store, Safari, and just recently iPadOS .

That designation means the iBiz has been ordered to open its gated community so that European customers can choose third-party app stores and web-based app distribution – also known as side-loading .

But wait, there's more

According to Bakry and Mysk, Apple's URI scheme has three significant failings. First, they say, it fails to check the origin of the website, meaning the aforementioned cross-site tracking is possible.

Second, Apple's MarketplaceKit – its API for third-party stores – doesn't validate the JSON Web Tokens (JWT) passed as input parameters via incoming requests. "Worse, it blindly relayed the invalid JWT token when calling the /oauth/token endpoint," observed Bakry and Mysk. "This opens the door to various injection attacks to target either the MarketplaceKit process or the marketplace back-end."

And third, Apple isn't using certificate pinning , which leaves the door open for meddling by an intermediary ( MITM ) during the MarketplaceKit communication exchange. Bakry and Mysk claim they were able to overwrite the servers involved in this process with their own endpoints.

The limiting factor of this attack is that a marketplace must first be approved by Apple before it can undertake this sort of tracking. At present, not many marketplaces have won approval. We're aware of the B2B Mobivention App marketplace , AltStore , and Setapp . Epic Games has also planned an iOS store . A few other marketplaces will work after an iThing jailbreak, but they’re unlikely to attract many consumers.

The two security researchers argue that scam apps regularly find their way through Apple's review process, meaning rogue app stores could be allowed through. And they claim the privacy problems arise from Apple wanting to track third-party store usage.

"The flaw of exposing users in the EU to tracking is the result of Apple insisting on inserting itself between marketplaces and their users," asserted Bakry and Mysk. "This is why Apple needs to pass an identifier to the marketplaces so they can identify installs and perhaps better calculate the due Core Technology Fee (CTF) ."

They urge iOS users in Europe to use Brave rather than Safari because Brave's implementation checks the origin of the website against the URL to prevent cross-site tracking.

Back when Apple planned not to support Home Screen web apps in Europe – a gambit later abandoned after developer complaints and regulatory pressure – the iGiant justified its position by arguing the amount of work required "was not practical to undertake given the other demands of the DMA." By not making the extra effort to implement third-party app stores securely, Apple has arguably turned its security and privacy concerns into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

In its remarks [PDF] on complying with the DMA, Apple declared, "In the EU, every user's security, privacy, and safety will depend in part on two questions. First, are alternative marketplaces and payment processors capable of protecting users? And, second, are they interested in doing so?"

There's also the question of whether Apple is capable of protecting users – and whether it's interested in doing so.

Another critical Chrome update has just been issued

Another Chrome security update has just been issued, with the Stable channel updated to 124.0.6367.78/.79 . This release includes a critical fix to the underlying graphics engine of the type that has allowed attackers to execute code on target machines in the past—albeit no news yet as to any exploitation this time around.

The update also includes two high-severity memory fixes—the kind typically seen in such updates. Google has acknowledged that such memory vulnerabilities in its core engine are the most frequently discovered and exploited. As usual, there is no further information “until a majority of users are updated with a fix.”

Given that Google has designated the first fix—essentially a vulnerability to potential code manipulation—as critical, it seems highly likely it’s a credible threat. And once the fix becomes public, it’s important that users update as soon as they can—the clock is ticking for any exploitation.

Usually, a critical fix might have been the biggest Chrome news of the week, but not this time. The other news is that the death of Chrome’s dreaded tracking cookies has been delayed once again—this time into early 2025, at least.

The issue is Google’s need to balance the privacy of its users with the seemingly fair treatment of its advertisers, especially when it essentially plays both gamekeeper (as owner of the browser) and poacher (as the world’s largest ad machine).

“We recognize that there are ongoing challenges related to reconciling divergent feedback from the industry, regulators and developers,” Google said in a post mid-week, “and will continue to engage closely with the entire ecosystem.”

That’s a critical update of an entirely different kind.

The update comes as Google’s ongoing engagement with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) tries to carve a path through this messy situation. “We will not complete third-party cookie deprecation during the second half of Q4,” Google confirmed. “Assuming we can reach an agreement, we envision proceeding with third-party cookie deprecation starting early next year.”

Google is in something of a bind here, given its unique role in the industry. As web users become ever more privacy savvy, the gap between where Chrome is today and Apple’s Safari remains too wide. Chrome is an excellent browser, and its users rightly want to see it line up more closely with the alternatives.

Google seems to agree—notwithstanding its awkward Incognito Mode stumble—but it needs to find a compromise that doesn’t kill its ad model as well as those cookies.

Meanwhile, the bigger open question is around AI, of course, and just what this will mean for browser searching and advertising in the coming years. All told, by the time these cookies finally disappear, we may be in new territory anyway.

04/29 update: To be fair to Google, Chrome’s regular security updates—whether addressing vulnerabilities discovered by external researchers or by Google itself, front-end an ongoing program to improve the security of the world’s most popular browser.

As a recent example, the forthcoming Device Bound Session Credentials (DBSC) update should materially resolve the plague of session cookie theft, “by binding authentication sessions to the device... to disrupt the cookie theft industry since exfiltrating these cookies will no longer have any value.”

But these security advances are not always smooth running—and another such update, Chrome’s foray into post-quantum cryptography (PQC), seems to have hit a teething issue.

Put at its simplest, PQC aims to protect today’s data from tomorrow’s more advanced threats—the theory being that while today’s defenses are largely good enough, new quantum computing advances will likely break the best cryptography available today.

And while Google points out that “it’s believed that quantum computers that can break modern classical cryptography won’t arrive for 5, 10, possibly even 50 years from now,” the issue is the threat from “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later, in which data is collected and stored today and later decrypted once cryptanalysis improves.”

Google says that “the sooner we can update TLS to use quantum-resistant session keys, the sooner we can protect user network traffic against future quantum cryptanalysis,” and that “we are updating technical standards, testing and deploying new quantum-resistant algorithms, and working with the broader ecosystem to help ensure this effort is a success.”

But as Bleeping Computer reported over the weekend, “some ​Google Chrome users report having issues connecting to websites, servers, and firewalls after Chrome 124 was released last week with the new quantum-resistant X25519Kyber768 encapsulation mechanism enabled by default... The issue also affects security appliances, firewalls, networking middleware, and various network devices from multiple vendors (e.g., Fortinet, SonicWall, Palo Alto Networks, AWS).”

For now, “affected Google Chrome users can mitigate the issue by going to chrome://flags/#enable-tls13-kyber and disabling the TLS 1.3 hybridized Kyber support in Chrome,” but the option to disable PQC defenses will be removed once the technology is considered stable.

PQC hit the headlines earlier this year, with Apple’s announcement that it was updating iMessage to protect against the same threat. And while Apple presented this as a competitive advantage for iMessage over alternatives, the reality is that such technology is likely to become much more standard over the next few years.

But such tech is still fairly deep inside the rabbit hole, and you can expect many more unexpected issues as wider rollouts begin.
