Escape to beautiful Lyme Regis

The beautiful town of Lyme Regis lies on the stunning Jurassic Coast on the border between Dorset and Devon.

The maze of steep, narrow streets, shops, galleries, pubs and cafes, will find appeal to everyone. Famous for its ancient Cobb Harbour which dominates the view out to sea, its south facing beaches providing safe bathing and is synonymous for fossils. It was on these beaches that Mary Anning discovered the first Ichthyosaur to be found in Britain and today the area continues to be a mecca for fossil collectors of all ages.

If you’re planning to Visit Lyme Regis, we recommend taking a look at the Love Lyme Regis website which provides lots of useful information on things to do, attractions, events, accommodation, shopping and more.

RELATED POST: The Ultimate Local’s Guide to Dorset

In no particular order, here’s a guide to the best things to do in and around Lyme Regis, Dorset. There’s also an interactive map at the bottom of this page to help you plan.

1 – Lyme Regis Beaches

Lyme is, first and foremost, a seaside town, so of course the beaches are among the best things to do in Lyme Regis! There are actually several to choose from, so here’s a quick round-up:

Town Beach – a sand and shingle beach along the curving bay. This is the main beach in Lyme Regis and is ideal for swimming, so it’s probably the busiest spot on sunny days.

Looking down from a small gassy hill at Lyme Regis beach, a curved sandy beach with a stone breaker wall jutting out into the sea and the small walled harbour behind that filled with boats.

Monmouth Beach – a shingle beach to the west of town. Home to the famous Ammonite Pavement , also called the Ammonite Graveyard; a layer of limestone containing many ammonite fossils.

Church Cliff Beach – a shingle beach with patches of sand which sits on the mouth of the River Lym. Low tide exposes a rocky ledge which is full of rock pools, so it’s great for exploring with kids.

East Cliff Beach – a fossil-rich shingle beach running east towards Charmouth . The cliffs above this beach are prone to collapsing, so avoid getting too near them. However, it’s these landslides which provide the steady stream of fossils found regularly on the beach.

2 – Fossil Hunting

A large grey stone with a large white ammonite fossil on the face of it sitting on a stoney beach with a low grey cliff close to Lyme Regis, the tide is out and the sea is only just visible in the distance.

Speaking of those fossil-rich beaches… Lyme Regis is a hotspot for fossil hunting! The town sits towards the western end of Dorset’s stunning Jurassic Coast . This 95-mile-long stretch of coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its geological and historical importance. Among other things, that means the coast is rich with fossils.

Lyme was the home of famed palaeontologist and fossil collector Mary Anning . So it’s the perfect place to go to learn a little more about the fossils of the Jurassic Coast – and even hunt for some yourself. I found a small ammonite on my last visit to the area, without even looking too hard!

With the regular landslides from the ever-shifting cliffs, there are often treasures to be found amongst the gravel and shingle! You can even take a fossil hunting tour, such as the ones run by the local museum , for the best shot at finding something!

3 – Visit Lyme Regis Museum

Exterior of Lyme Regis Museum, a modern two storey building made form black metal with large glass windows all around both floors, and an older whitewashed townhouse just behind it, shot from below with a cloudy blue sky overhead.

As well as the fossil hunting walks mentioned above, Lyme Regis Museum is worth a visit for its brilliant fossil collections. You can also discover the life story of Mary Anning, learn more about why there are so many fossils on this part of the coast, and find out what they teach us about life on earth millions of years ago.

4 – Dinosaurland Fossil Museum

Close up of the head and neck of a dinosaur skeleton with its mouth open showing sharp teeth inside the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum

This is the last mention of fossil-related things to do in Lyme Regis, I promise! Dinosaurland Fossil Museum has more than 12,000 specimens on permanent display, so if you have an interest in fossils this is definitely the place to visit.

The collection is truly spectacular. Browse the local 200-million-year-old Jurassic marine fossils, like the impressive Ichthyosaur, as well as more exotic exhibits such as Russian trilobites and a 73kg lump of dinosaur dung!

5 – Walk Along the Cobb

Low stone wall with a walkway on top next to the sea with waves crashing against the wall and a low headland in front silhouetted against the sky. The sun is setting over the sea and a couple walking along the wall are silhouttted in front of the sunset light.

“The principal street almost hurrying into the water, the Walk to the Cobb, skirting round the pleasant little bay, which, in the season, is animated with bathing machines and company… are what the stranger’s eye will seek.” Jane Austen, Persuasion

The Cobb is a curving breakwater built to protect Lyme Regis’ harbour. Walking along the thick stone wall provides a stunning view of the pretty bay and the little harbour.

This wall features in a pivotal scene in Jane Austen’s Persuasion and several film and TV adaptations of the book, as well as an iconic scene from The French Lieutenant’s Woman (both the movie and the book). You can learn more in my post listing 16 books set in Dorset .

6 – Marine Aquarium

The Cobb is also home to the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium , which is ideal for a day out with kids. This is a small family-run attraction which offers a fun, interactive insight into the local sea life. Learn a little more about the sea creatures of the British coastline, and get some up-close encounters with animals including crabs, crawfish, and starfish!

7- Explore the Boutique Shops and Galleries

Lyme Regis is brimming with independent boutique shops and art galleries, so it’s easy to while away a few hours browsing them. Here are a few you should make sure to check out:

  • Jewellery by Lucy Campbell , Miller’s Parlour, The Town Mill. Visit the designer in her working studio and browse the range of jewellery inspired by the beach and sea.
  • Old Forge Fossil Shop, 15-16 Broad Street.
  • Jurassic Gems , 7 Drakes Way.
  • Lyme Regis Antique and Craft Centre, Marine Parade.
  • Persuasion , 20 Marine Parade. Coastal-inspired gifts and clothing.
  • Alice’s Bear Shop and Teddy Bear Hospital , St Michaels Business Centre, off Poole’s Ct.
  • Blue Lias Gallery , 47 Coombe St.
  • Town Mill Galleries, The Town Mill, Mill Lane. More on this below.
  • Coombe Street Gallery , 33 Coombe St.

8 – Visit Town Mill

Close up of a large stone mill whieel with a star shape carved into it and a hand pointing at its centre - in Town Mill Lyme Regis

Nestled in the town’s artisan quarter, the ancient Town Mill has provided flour to Lyme Regis since at least the 1300s. Today, the medieval watermill is still running, creating artisanal stone-ground flour. Visitors can take a self-guided tour – it’s free, but if you can, please make a donation to help keep the mill running.

These days, this is much more than just a mill! The atmospheric setting is also a creative hub. Several local businesses call the mill home, including art galleries, artists’ studios, a café, a silversmith, a bakery & deli, one of the best breweries in Dorset – and more! So there are plenty of reasons to visit and explore.

9 – Hiking on the Jurassic Coast

View from the top of Golden Cap cliff on the Dorset Jurassic Coast, with log yellow grass in the foreground and a long stretch of coast below with a sandy beach and blue sea beside grassy cliffs with grey and yellow faces., taken on a sunny day with clear blue sky above.

As mentioned above, Lyme is right on the Jurassic Coast. So it’s in a prime location for some incredible hiking and cliff walks. There are loads to choose from, but here are a handful to get you started…

  • Lyme Regis to Charmouth – 5 miles (8km) circular. Take the inland cliff path there, and walk back along the beach.
  • Chideock to Charmouth – 5.4 miles (8.6 km) one way. You can climb Golden Cap – the highest point on the South Coast – along the way.
  • Eype Mouth to Seatown – 4.3 miles (7.0 km). The route goes via Doghouse Hill , West Dorset’s oldest human settlement, and  Thorncombe Beacon .

10 – Hix Oyster and Fish House

Hix Restaurant in Lyme Regis, a small wood and glass building with a grey tiled roof on the edge of a low hill above a harbour filled with small white boats with the sea behind that. there is a heron stood on the roof of the restaurant and a green leafy bush in the forgeround.

This is a fishing village, so of course one of the best things to do is discover the local seafood. There are loads of awesome restaurants to choose from, but one of the best is HIX Oyster & Fish House . Opened by acclaimed local chef Mark Hix, the restaurant is all about locally sourced fish and seafood – as well as other local produce.

They’re so keen on all things local that Mark founded the Food Rocks Festival (see the festivals section at the end of this post), which is an annual event bringing together some of the best food, producers and suppliers that Dorset and the South West has to offer.

11 – Lister Gardens Mini Golf

Lister Gardens are ideal if you’re looking for some fun things to do in Lyme Regis – especially with kids! These award-winning seafront gardens have beautiful views of the bay, and offer a quiet and tranquil place to simply wander and enjoy the greenery. But they also offer an 18-hole mini-golf, table tennis tables, and a putting green. So they have plenty to keep you busy.

11 – Lyme Sculpture Trail

Since 2015, the Langmoor and Lister Gardens have also been home to the Lyme Regis Sculpture Trail . The trail is dotted with sculptures by both established and upcoming local artists. Explore an outdoor gallery, and discover a little more about the Dorset art scene as you do so.

13 – Afternoon Tea at the Alexandra

The Alexandra is a beautiful, boutique hotel overlooking Lyme Bay, so it’s the perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea with a view! Built as a stately home for the Dowager Countess Poulett in 1735, the building became a hotel in 1901. This historic and luxurious setting is the perfect place to relax!

14 – Marine Theatre

Marine Theatre , a small white art deco style building with blue window and door frames and blue trim along the top, next to a paved esplanade beside the blue sea with a large empty paved space in front enclosed by a stone wall with a few wooden benches, taken on a sunny day with clear blue sky above.

From its prime seafront location, the Marine Theatre boasts stunning views of the sweeping bay. It also boasts a pretty impressive history: this small white-and-blue theatre is over 125 years old! Originally used as a drill hall for the military, the building eventually became a theatre and cinema. Today, it’s a popular visual arts centre offering a great mix of entertainment, including bands, films, comedians, plays, screenings, and community-led events.

15 – Walk the River Lym

View of a narrow river in between two houses, the house on the left is a small grey stone cottage with no windows and a dark grey tiled roodf with a small white bird spraypainted onto the side, the building on the right is a larger whitewashed house. There is a low wall on the right bank of the river covered in green ivy and other bushes, and clear blue sky overhead. Things to do in lyme regis

Lyme Regis grew up around the mouth of the River Lym, also called the Lim. The river starts near the inland village of Uplyme and runs for just over 5km down to the sea. Following the river from source to mouth, or vice versa, will take you over footbridges, through meadows, and past several old mills, including the Town Mill mentioned above.

You’ll also pass a spray painting of a crane, which was done by Banksy in 2012, although it’s unfortunately barely visible today .

16 – Lyme RIB Rides

Aerial shot taken above the sea looking back at Lyme Regis with the stone breaker pointing into the sea and a few sail boats near the harbour entrance in the distance, there is a bright yellow and black RIB boat with several people on board going very fast through the water close to the camera with a white frothy boat trail behind it.

If you’re looking for something a little more adrenaline-pumping, a RIB Ride could be right up your street! A RIB is a rigid inflatable boat: they’re motor-powered and very fast, so a ride in one is an exhilarating experience.

Family-run local company Lyme RIB Rides offers several tour options, from a 30-minute speed ride (perfect for thrill-seekers) to a more leisurely two-hour cruise.

17 – Fishing Tour

Before it was a tourist town, Lyme Regis was a fishing village, and it still has a thriving local fishing industry. So why not get some first-hand experience of the industry with a fishing tour? There are a couple of options, such as Nick’s Fishing Trips .

Nick offers one-hour mackerel fishing trips from the Cobb Harbour in Lyme Regis several times a day, as well as deep-sea fishing, private charters, and sightseeing tours.

18 – Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs

Running between Lyme Regis and Axmouth in Devon, the Undercliffs is a 304-hectare National Nature Reserve. It’s a stunning area, although the only access route is along the South West Coast Path, which runs for about seven miles through the reserve.

The Undercliffs is also a very significant spot on the Jurassic Coast. The rocks get younger as you travel towards to Lyme Regis, so walking this route offers a rare chance to walk “through” geological time. Fossils, especially ammonites, are not uncommon. However, the NNR asks all visitors to leave all fossils where they are for others to enjoy.

19 – Axe Valley Wildlife Park

Although technically in Devon, not Dorset, the Axe Valey Wildlife Park is too close to Lyme Regis to miss from this list! A small, friendly zoo on Summerleaze Farm in Axeminster, this park is perfect for a day out with the kids.

20 – Forde Abbey

large stately home built from beige coloured stone with several turrets and a castle like appearance, surrounded by green leafy trees and a garden with small rounded hedges and a large rectangular pond in front.

Another great place to visit near Lyme is Forde Abbey , a former Cistercian monastery close to the border with Somerset. The house and gardens on this 1,600-acre estate are both open to the public and make for a brilliant day out.

The gardens are exceptionally beautiful – and have a strong focus on sustainability – so it’s easy to see why they’ve previously been nominated for the Historic Houses ‘Garden of the Year’ award. Forde Abbey also runs a great programme of events throughout the year.

21 – Charmouth and Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre

Just along the coast from Lyme Regis, the village of Charmouth is also famous for its fossils. You can walk along the beach from Lyme to Charmouth when the tide is right, hunting for fossils along the way.

Don’t miss the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre for loads more info about the geography and history of this section of the coast. This lovely little museum is also where you’ll find David Attenborough’s “Sea Dragon” : the full skeleton of an ichthyosaur found locally, which was the focus of a recent BBC documentary.

Lyme Regis is very well connected so it’s easy to get there by car or public transport. The nearest train station is Axminster, which is on the London Waterloo to Exeter line and takes around 2 hours 40 minutes. From Axminster Station buses run to Lyme Regis fairly frequently.

If you’re driving, be aware that the area is quite hilly and some of the roads in town can be a little steep! There are plenty of car parks in town, including two long-stay car parks at Holmbush and Charmouth Road.

If you’re coming from the rest of Dorset, the easiest way to reach Lyme Regis is to take the X53 Jurassic Coaster bus, which runs between Poole and Exeter with stops at all the highlights of the coast area.

This is amazing! My family and I used to go to Weymouth every year when we were little. Which, of course, included a trip to Lyme Regis too. We used to walk along the seafront, and the beach, and go to the Dinosaurland Museum. But I never knew there were so many other things to do here! Especially, fossil hunting and the fossil festival. Thanks for sharing.

Ah thanks so much for reading! I grew up in Weymouth! Lyme Regis is so stunning and there are so many lovely things to do there. Hope you get a chance to visit again soon 🙂

I’m hoping to move to Charmouth next year and this has given me lots of ideas. Thanks

Oh amazing, enjoy 🙂 I’m hoping to write a separate piece about Charmouth soon so hopefully that’ll help even more!

OK, Lyme Regis it is. We travel to the UK regularly from Australia, and have been wondering where to spend a week after our narrowboat cruise. Looks like we have decided! Thanks, a great site!

cliff and Jenni

Hi Cliff! That’s great news, Lyme Regis is beautiful – hope you enjoy your trip there!! I highly recommend a visit to West Bay while you’re in the area, and a trip up Golden Cap if you don’t mind the climb 🙂

This is wonderful information. We plan to stay in Lyme Regis at the end of a 300 mile Eurovelo route biking trip from Rorschach to Strasbourg, and we want to travel over to Lyme Regis to stay in one spot, chill out and enjoy some light hiking. We will be “on foot”, no car or bikes at this point. I have printed out the 15 short Dorset hikes, but wondered if there is local transport to all the starting points? Which ones start in or very near Lyme Regis? thanks, Karen

Hi Karen – I’m so sorry I didn’t reply to ths sooner, the comment was blocked and I’ve only just spotted it.

There is a map in my “15 Short Coast Hikes” article which shows the start point of all the walks. The closest to Lyme Regis would be the Golden Cap walk, the West Bay to Hive Beach walk, and of course the Lyme Regis to Charmouth walk. You can take a bus from Lyme Regis to Chideok which is close to the start of the Golden Cap walk, and you can also take a bus to West Bay to start that walk. If you want to go further afield there is also the “Jurassic Coaster” bus which runs all along the coast and would get you to Weymouth in under 2 hours.

Hope that helps 🙂 Enjoy your trip!

The small town of Lyme Regis in Dorset has a lot going for it. Situated in southwest England, "Lyme," as it's affectionately referred to by locals and returning visitors, is not only extremely picturesque, it also boasts no end of fun things to do.

Lyme Regis Harbour

Must-visit tourist attractions include Lyme's famous harbor wall. Known as The Cobb , the origins of this stunning curving sea wall can be traced all the way back to the reign of Edward I in the late 13th century.

But Lyme's history goes back even farther, with fun places to visit such as the kid-friendly Dinosaurland being dedicated to telling a story that goes back as far as the Jurassic period.

Walking along The Cobb

The best-known of Lyme Regis' historic landmarks, The Cobb is an ancient sea wall that can trace its roots all the way back to the 13th century.

Once an integral part of one of England's most important naval ports, The Cobb has since been rebuilt and improved numerous times down the centuries, with the present-day version constructed in the early 1800s.

Built from locally quarried stone, this marvel of engineering snakes its way from the shoreline some 870 feet, providing an impenetrable obstacle for the sometimes-rough seas of the English Channel.

The views back over Lyme Regis and out to sea from its end point are fabulous, and inspired the famous book and movie, The French Lieutenant's Woman .

But don't just stroll along The Cobb for the great views. Watch the town's fishing fleet come and go, or better still, grab a fishing charter and catch something of your own.

Or, if you'd prefer to get a close-up look at native marine life, pop into the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium. There's also a small, often overlooked beach here that's popular with pet-owners and parents alike.

Lyme Regis Museum

Lyme Regis Museum is a great place to learn more about the town's rich history. Located on the seafront in the heart of the old town, this first-rate museum features exhibits on the history of the town and its people.

It also offers plenty of information on the history of the Jurassic Coast , a 95-mile-long stretch of coastline that's now been designated a World Heritage Site . The building itself is well worth a look on its own.

The former residence of a local businessman, this architectural gem was constructed in 1901 on the site of the home where the town's most famous resident, Mary Anning, was born. Anning became well-known as one of the country's most respected paleontologists, and the museum features fascinating exhibits on her life and work.

Other exhibits feature artifacts and displays relating to John Fowles, author of the must-read novel, The French Lieutenant's Woman , and Jane Austen, who was known to have holidayed here.

Additional highlights include spectacular views over the coast, a learning center for the kids, as well as displays of Lyme-related artwork.

In addition to its dinosaur models and bones, the museum houses an impressive collection of fossils, many of them found locally. Interesting displays also explain the significance of the fossils found here, and explain how Lyme Regis became a major center for the study of these ancient creatures.

In addition to its well-stocked souvenir shop, guided tours are available. For a truly memorable learning experience, join one of the museum's regular fossil-hunting tours. These fascinating guided tours take in some of the most important fossil sites in Lyme , including Monmouth Beach, where fossils can be easily spotted.

The focus here is on learning. In addition to the sea creatures themselves, visitors can peruse exhibits and displays that provide information on these fascinating creatures as well as their natural habitats along the Jurassic Coast.

Numerous park benches are available in case you want to linger a little longer while enjoying the views.

Delve a little deeper into the park and you'll find an excellent network of pathways leading through a sculpture garden featuring artwork from local artists, a shady woodland walk, as well as a fun mini-golf course. Visit at night and you'll find this delightful park and its trails lit up.

Located overlooking the seafront just a short distance from the Lyme Regis Museum and the picturesque Lyme Regis Guildhall , the venue regularly features an eclectic mix of live concerts, theatrical performances, comedy, and movies (movie star James Cagney once performed here!).

It's also a popular spot to relax and unwind before or after performances. In addition to offering great views, the lounge area regularly hosts musicians performing everything from pop classics to sea shanties. And, for those interested in learning more about theater production and acting, a number of fun programs are available for adults and kids.

St. Michael the Archangel Church

Whether you're a churchgoer, a history buff, or simply enjoy exploring old buildings, you'll want to include St. Michael the Archangel Church on your Lyme Regis itinerary.

Perched on a hill looking down on the town and the seafront, this well-preserved Medieval church was built in the 12th century and boasts incredible views from the numerous benches lining its cliff top.

It's as attractive an old church on the inside as it is the outside. Interior highlights include its stained-glass windows, one of which was added in 1904 to commemorate local resident and fossil-hunter Mary Anning. You can also search for Anning's gravesite (she was buried here in 1847).

Address: Church St, Lyme Regis, Dorset

Monmouth Beach

Ever since local resident and amateur paleontologist Mary Anning identified the first fossilized specimens here in the early 1880s, Lyme Regis has been the place go for those who enjoy fossil hunting.

While there are a variety of locations along the seashore to spot these ancient relics, none offer up quite the treasure trove that can be seen on Monmouth Beach.

Here, among the mounds of pebbles that line the beach, you won't have to look too hard to find fossils dating back hundreds of millions of years, many simply washing ashore as the sea slowly erodes the surrounding cliffs. In many cases, you'll find examples of sea anemones that can easily be picked up by even the smallest of hands.

Be sure to also look out for the unique the Ammonite Pavement . This fascinating natural phenomena can be seen on the limestone ledges lining the beach, each displaying a vast number of fossils.

A word of warning, though: be aware that fossils are not permitted to be removed from the cliff face due to the potential for rockfalls (though those specimens washed up on the beach are fair game!).

A variety of fun, informative fossil hunting walks and tours can be arranged through local museums and attractions such as Dinosaurland.

Lyme Regis, Dorset; a tourism guide for 2024

Lyme Regis is one of the gems of the Dorset coastline.

This delightful town boasts a pretty sandy beach, an ancient harbour (known as the Cobb), characterful Victorian houses and a coastline packed with fossils. Found within the traditional town centre is a multitude of characterful pubs, restaurants, and many outstanding family ran hotels.

Lyme Regis is the best resort town of the Dorset coastline, but its far western location and poor transport mean it's often overlooked for eastern Dorset (such as Bournemouth and Weymouth), or the much more famous regions of Devon and Cornwall. This is a shame, as Lyme is a hidden gem of the south British coastline.

This guide will provide an introduction to Lyme Regis and help you get the most from this quintessential beach town.

Highlights of Lyme Regis

The Cobb - The delightful harbour of Lyme Regis, with its formidable seawall, bustling harbour and assortment of traditional houses. During winter, The Cobb provides shelter to the town's fishing fleet, while in summer, it is delightful for a stroll and to admire the views over the coastline.

the cobb Lyme Regis

Monmouth beach – One of the finest beaches of the Jurassic coastline for fossil hunting. This boulder-strewn beach was once the seabed of an ocean rich with aquatic life, and the abundance of sea life during the Late Triassic period is captured by the many fossils found in the rocks. These fossils can be easily discovered by splitting almost any rock, and seeing the distinctive shape of ammonites and fossilised shells. Insight: To get the most from your fossil hunting, you will want to bring a hammer!

Ammonites are easily seen within the rocks on Monmouth beach

Lyme to Seatown coastal path – This scenic trail follows part of the Southwest Coast Path and takes in Charmouth and the Golden Cap (191m), the highest point of the region. The 6mile (10km) hiking route takes around 4 hours and climbs some very steep hills. It is best walked westwards from Seatown to Lyme, and there is a bus service connecting Lyme Regis to Seatown.

Lyme Regis beach - The pretty sandy beach that stretches around Lyme Regis bay. This is a safe, clean and sandy beach, which is ideal for families and is very popular in the summer.

A day trip to Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis is ideal for a day trip. All of the sights of the small town can be easily seen within three hours of sightseeing, and the remainder of the day could include relaxing on a beach, hunting for fossils on Monmouth beach or eating some traditional fishing and chips in Langmoor Gardens.

Insight: Lyme Regis is a very hilly town; while exploring it expect to do a lot of uphill walking!

The interactive map below shows the sights of Lyme Regis along with a suggested tour of the town. The route is 4.5km and starts from Woodmead Car Park (the largest car park in the town). The red line marks the Seaton to Lyme Regis footpath. ( Note: zoom out to see all of the points)

Fossil hunting in Lyme Regis

No matter your age, the best unique activity of Lyme Regis is hunting for fossils.

Almost every rock and bolder within Monmouth beach contains either a fossilised Ammonite, a fossilised shell or the distinctive patterns of fossilised burrows. These fossils were formed during the Late Triassic period (around 200 million years ago), when the region was covered by a shallow and warm sea.

The best fossils to find are Ammonites, with their distinctive swirl patterns from their shells, and these can be easily found, either on rocks that have already been opened or by cracking them open yourself.

The best area of Monmouth beach for fossils is just past the beach huts and in front of the grey "Blue Lias Clay" cliffs. These are very fragile cliffs so never climb them or remove rocks from them. This area is part of the Axmouth-Lym Regis Undercliffs Nature Reserve, and you are free to collect any small fossils that you discover.

To get the most from your fossil hunting time, do bring a hammer (and some eye protection), as the rocks are very hard and difficult to smash by simply dropping them.

If cracking rocks isn't for you, then there is the stunning Ammonite Pavement on the western side of Monmouth beach (and best seen at low tide). This flat limestone bedrock contains many hundreds of Ammonite fossils, and even contains fossilised ammonites over 65cm.

To see some of the finest fossils that have been found within the Lyme region, either head to the Lyme Regis Museum or the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum – both of which are excellent for a wet day.

Lyme Regis beaches

The best beach of the Lyme Regis region lies at the heart of the town, between the Cobb and the Gun Cliff sea defences.

This beach is known as Lyme Regis beach, and the best sandy section is close to the Cobb, where the seawalls have prevented erosion during winter storms. This is the most popular beach and has calm and clean sea waters that are suitable for children. Further around the bay, the amount of sand decreases and is almost completely formed of stones and pebbles on the eastern side.

Lyme Regis beach

Lyme Regis beach is mostly sand near the Cobb and has more pebbles and stones to the east side

Church Cliff Beach is a small sandy beach on the eastern side of Lyme, but it almost disappears at high tide. Further eastwards and at the end of the sea defences, is East Cliff Beach. This is a large beach with a decent amount of sand and has a much more relaxing atmosphere than the beaches in the centre of town.

There is a small sandy beach at the end of the Cobb seawall, just behind the Aquarium. It can provide an alternative if Lyme beach is too busy.

Monmouth beach is much more suited for fossil hunting than a typical beach for relaxing or playing.

Church Cliff Beach Lyme Regis

Church Cliff Beach is a small alternative sandy beach

Lyme Regis nightlife

Lyme Regis is not known for its nightlife, and it tends to be focused in one of the many characterful pubs.

Popular pubs for tourists (being close to the seafront) include the Cobb Arms, Harbour Inn, and Rock Point Inn. Rock Point Inn has a great outside area overlooking Gun Cliff.

For some local craft beer, head to the Lyme Regis Brewery, set in the pretty The Town Mills complex. For pubs where locals go, and are much cheaper than along the seafront, visit the lively Volunteer Inn or head up the hill to the calmer Nags Head.

Family activities at Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis is a fantastic town for young children, but apart from fossil hunting, there is not a lot to entertain teenagers.

For all families, the main draw will be the beach and fossil hunting. Other activities include the Mini Golf in the Langmoor Gardens, the small Aquarium on the Cobb (but it is quite expensive for its size) or the free play area in Anning Road park. For a dose of adrenaline, there are exciting boat rides from Lyme Rib Rides - www.lymeribrides.com/

Lyme Regis Sea Aquarium

Lyme Regis in the summer

During the summer holidays, it can feel as if half of the county has descended on to the small town. The sheer number of visitors can servery detract from the charter of the town, as you fight to find car parking, are packed onto the beach or stand endless in queues for ice cream or drinks.

For a trip to Lyme during the summer, always head to the town as early as possible and be prepared to park a long way from the beachfront. When booking accommodation always check there is car parking. Insight: The best moths to visit Lyme Regis is in June or September.

Car parking

For car parking either head to Woodmead Car Park or Charmouth Road car park. Woodmead Car Park is to the north of the town centre and is the most likely place to find space in the summer. Charmouth Road car park is the second largest carpark but lies to the far east of the town.

Lyme Regis for a holiday

Lyme Regis is a fantastic location for a relaxing holiday destination.

Lyme Regis has a much calmer and more personable atmosphere than the other bustling resort towns of Dorset, such as Weymouth, Bournemouth or Poole. This makes the town an ideal choice for families with young children or older visitors. Lyme is not a destination for buzzing nightlife or action-packed holidays (families with teenagers or groups wanting a party-focused holiday).

Day trips from Lyme could include Charmouth and the pretty village of Abbotsbury.

25 BEST Things To Do in Lyme Regis and Near Lyme Regis!

Categories England , U.K

Lyme Regis is known as the ‘Pearl of Dorset’. It’s a seaside town in West Dorset and works well as a base in Dorset or as a day trip because there are so things to do in Lyme Regis and many things to do near Lyme Regis too!

I loved this town for its many beaches, nice shops, the harbour and the coastal walks nearby!

In this Dorset travel blog, I’m going to give you a big list of the best Lyme Regis attractions, places to visit in Lyme Regis and the top things to do in Lyme Regis so you can plan your Dorset holiday, or your day out in Dorset.

If you are in Lyme Regis as a family with children, you’ll definitely be pleased with how many things to do in Lyme Regis with kids there are!

How to Get to Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis is in Western Dorset and it’s actually very close to the border of Devon. I stayed in Devon at Royal Oak Farm Stargazing Cabins and it was easy for me to get to Lyme Regis from Devon.

If you are coming from along the coast in Dorset or Devon, you’ll use the A3052 to get there which is a good road, although you often have to slow down through the villages, and you might use the A35 which is a bigger A road.

Lyme Regis Parking

I visited Lyme Regis on a beautiful summer’s day so I was worried about parking and it being busy.

Luckily, there are a few Lyme Regis car parks to choose from:

Holmbush Car Park – This is where I parked as it is the furthest out but only up the hill from the town and beach. This car park has quite a bit of parking available, toilets and is payable at the machine via cash, card and a parking app.

I recommend this car park if you are planning a full day in Lyme Regis taking part in the many Lyme Regis activities on offer!

Things to do in Lyme Regis, Lyme Regis car park

Monmouth Car Park – This is the next biggest car park from what I saw and it’s well located by the Lyme Regis beaches and harbour. This is definitely a good place to park in Lyme Regis, especially with children so they don’t have to walk as far to the beach.

Cobb Gate Car Park – This is only a tiny car park with very limited spaces that you need to drive through the town to get to. If you are visiting on a busy day I wouldn’t even attempt to park here.

Woodmead Car Park – This car park is also a bit further out of the town but unlike Holmbush is closer to the town centre than the harbour and because it’s further out it’s likely it will have more availability in the busier months.

Lyme Regis Map

To help you with planning all of your things to do in Lyme Regis and your Lyme Regis trip, whether that’s a holiday or day trip, here is a Lyme Regis map with all of the top Lyme Regis attractions I have mentioned below.

Remember to scroll to the bottom to check out what to do near Lyme Regis too as there are plenty of places to go near Lyme Regis!

Lyme Regis Things To Do

1. lyme regis beaches.

Easily the best thing about Lyme Regis is its beaches! Most of the beaches are stone but there is a small section of sand beach to make it more enjoyable!

The sand beach in Lyme Regis is close to the harbour, also known as The Cobb. It does get busy on hot days because of everyone trying to sunbathe and enjoy it, but it is a nice beach so I can’t blame them!

Things to do in Lyme Regis, Lyme Regis Sand Beach

In front of the colourful beach huts, you’ll also see the main Lyme Regis Beach which is a stone beach and because of its location it also gets busy.

Things to do in Lyme Regis, Lyme Regis beaches

What I really loved is that around the corner from The Cobb, at the start of Monmouth Car Park is a big stretch of beach which is called Chippel Bay and this was so much quieter than the main beach when I went!

There’s also a really small beach near the town called Church Beach by the Marine Theatre.

This really shows that although Lyme Regis is a popular destination and gets busier in the summer, you can avoid the crowds!

Things to do in Lyme Regis, Lyme Regis Chippel Bay

Can you swim in the sea in Lyme Regis?

Yes, it’s a really good place for swimming and other water activities which I’ll get onto soon!

2. Lyme Regis Colourful Beach Huts

The reason I put Lyme Regis on my UK bucket list was that I saw these colourful beach huts and I thought they looked really cool.

They’re one of the good places to visit in Lyme Regis for a cool photo opportunity!

But as well as just posing outside them for a photo, These beach huts can be hired and I think hiring a beach hut is a great way to spend 1 day in Lyme Regis so you have some shade and somewhere to sit if the weather isn’t great

Things to do in Lyme Regis, Lyme Regis Beach Huts

3. The Cobb Harbour

When visiting Lyme Regis, make sure you take a walk down to The Cobb which is the harbour of the town. It’s pretty cool as it curves around and you can walk on top of the wall as well as down by the water.

Things to do in Lyme Regis, Lyme Regis Harbour The Cobb

4. Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium

At the end of The Cobb is the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium which is a small aquarium with hands-on feeding which is one of the things to do in Lyme Regis to keep the children entertained!

5. Fossil Hunting in Lyme Regis

One of the most popular activities in Lyme Regis and attractions to the town is its fossils! Lyme Regis is said to be Britain’s best fossil hunting destination by Countryfile , and because of this, it is very easy and common to go fossil hunting in Lyme Regis!

Lyme Regis is famous for its geology and the nearby beaches have remarkable fossil remains of sea creatures from the Jurassic seas of 180 million years ago!

For the best Lyme Regis Fossil hunting beach, head to Lyme Regis Fossil Beach (Ammonite Pavement) which is on Google Maps.

Things to do in Lyme Regis, Fossil Hunting

Can you take fossils from Lyme Regis?

On some beaches in the UK and along the South Coast of England, visitors are not allowed to take fossils home with them, however, the Jurassic Coast website says that in Lyme Regis you can take fossils home with you!

Here are some more tips on how to go fossil hunting and Lyme Regis Fossils.

6. Dinosaurland Fossil Museum

The beaches are not the only places you’ll find Fossils, one of the top Lyme Regis things to do is to visit Dinosaurland Fossil Museum which is a private museum located in a former church in the middle of the town.

Here you can visit The Time Gallery, see their Fossil Collection, and the Natural History Room. This is one of the best Lyme Regis attractions for families !

Things to do in Lyme Regis, Dinosaurland Fossil Museum

7. Lyme Regis Museum

Another brilliant place for information on fossils is Lyme Regis Museum which is also in the town centre. They actually run outdoor fossil walks if that takes your interest and inside as well as fossils you can read and see more about the town’s long history.

Museums may not always be your first choice of attraction but if it gets wet and you are looking for things to do in Lyme Regis in the rain, museums suddenly become very attractive!

8. Walks in Lyme Regis

What I really loved about Dorset is all of the footpaths, and the coastal footpaths linking one beach to another. From Lyme Regis, you could do a coastal walk to Charmouth which is a well-loved beach town and there are many other short walks in Lyme Regis too!

Take a look at this website for walks near Lyme Regis .

After I left Lyme Regis I did the Golden Cap Walk which was so impressive and I highly recommend it!

Things to do in Lyme Regis

9. Local Festivals & Markets

If you are looking for things to do in Lyme Regis this weekend and what’s on in Lyme Regis during your holiday, I really recommend researching local markets, festivals and events that are upcoming in Lyme Regis as I saw so many posters for these.

It is definitely the type of town that holds a lot of these types of events and what makes the town so vibrant and worth a visit.

10. Shopping in Lyme Regis

I really enjoyed wandering the main street of the town centre and looking into all of the shops, especially the women’s clothes shops .

So if you are wondering what to do in Lyme Regis, remember that sometimes wandering around the shops is a nice thing to do in a new place!

Also, if you haven’t had enough of the Fossils in Lyme Regis yet be sure to pop into The Old Forge Fossil Shop !

Things to do in Lyme Regis, Lyme Regis shops

11. Lyme Regis Kayak & Paddleboard Hire

The water in Lyme Regis Bay is perfect for water activities, therefore hiring a kayak or paddleboard, or bringing your own, is easily one of the best things to do in Lyme Regis on a nice day!

There are lots of places to hire boats and boards down by Lyme Regis Beach . If you bring your own, you’re best off parking in Monmouth Car Park so it’s less of a journey to the water!

12. Lyme Regis Boat Trips

Around The Cobb I saw quite a few signs for boat trips, fishing trips which I’ll go onto soon, but also fun boat trips like fast RIB rides which you can book with Lyme RIB Rides .

And you can book a more gentle and longer boat trip from Lyme Regis along the Jurrasic Coast with Stuart Line Cruises who are very popular in the area for their National Trust Cruises!

Things to do in Lyme Regis, Lyme Regis Activities

13. Lyme Regis Fishing Trips

If fishing is on your list of things to do in Dorset then Lyme Regis is the place to do it! There are options to go deep sea fishing in Lyme Regis and Mackerel fishing from Lyme Regis.

Harry May Deep Sea Fishing has an office near The Cobb offering both options starting from 1-hour trips so they will fit nicely into your Lyme Regis itinerary.

Lyme Bay Boat Trips also offer a range of fishing and sightseeing boat options!

Things to do in Lyme Regis, Lyme Regis Attractions

14. Private Boat Charter Lyme Regis

If you are a bigger family or group of friends, why not charter your own boat from Lyme Regis to go out fishing and see the Jurassic Coast from it!

Lyme Bay Boat Trips offer this option and I saw a few signs near The Cobb when I was there so it’s likely you can make a last-minute decision or if you’re spending a few days in Lyme Regis you can book for later in your holiday.

15. Mini Golf

Did you even go on holiday to the seaside in the UK if you didn’t play mini golf or crazy golf?? I don’t think so!

Lyme Regis Mini Golf has an 18-hole mini golf course located in the Lister Gardens which is just above the Marine Parade in the centre of the town. This is one of the popular Lyme Regis attractions for adults and children.

16. Woodland Walk

Next to the mini gold course in Lyme Regis is a woodland walk through the gardens. I really love this woodland area with a few different footpaths to take and amazing views of the ocean below. It runs along the top of the Marine Parade and is a nice place to sit for a bit of relaxation too.

Things To Do Near Lyme Regis

17. golden cap walk.

For one of the best places to visit near Lyme Regis and one of the most impressive walks near Lyme Regis, head to the Golden Cap Viewpoint which offers views all the way back down the coast to Lyme Regis!

You can do the walk from a few places, I did it from Langdon Hill which took me just 20 minutes to drive to from Lyme Regis, but you can also do it from Seatown and Charmouth Beaches if you want a longer walk.

Here’s my post on how to do the Golden Cap Walk with 3 Routes !

9 Epic Reasons to Visit Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast

By: Author Sophie Nadeau

Fossils, the Jurassic Coastline, and a glittering sea: there is a myriad of reasons to visit Lyme Regis, not least the fact that one of the most famous palaeontologists of the past few centuries, Mary Anning, was born in the town. Here’s why you must visit Lyme Regis on your next seaside escape in England!

Here's why you need to visit Lyme Regis in Dorset on your next England adventure. How to visit the Victorian fossil town of Lyme Regis and what to do once there; buy books, visit museums, search for fossils, learn about Mary Anning

Where is Lyme Regis?

#1 jurassic coast, #2 fossil hunting, #3 mary anning, #4 lyme regis is a seaside escape, #5 the cobb of lyme regis, #6 lyme regis is home to several beaches, #7 the south west coast path, #8 lyme regis is home to many museums, #9 lyme regis has plenty of bookshops and fossil shops.

Lyme Regis is a delightful seaside town on the Southern coast of Dorset. Home to a population of around three and a half thousand residents, the town is most associated with fossils and is often referred to as the ‘pearl of Dorset’ thanks to its sheer beauty.

Reasons to visit Lyme Regis

The Jurassic coast is so-called because of the sheer wealth of its wealth of geological history, spanning millions of years. The Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous period are all represented within a 96-mile stretch. Lyme Regis is located in the very middle of this part of the coastline, which has been a UNESCO world heritage site since the early 200s.

Hands down, one of the best things to do in Lyme Regis is to go fossil hunting. Truth be told, the most famous fossil find at Lyme Regis was a complete ichthyosaur, which was discovered during the 1800s by the then 12-years-old Mary Anning.

However, most commonly found along the coastline at this point are ammonites, small shell-based sea creatures which inhabited the oceans some 201- 66 million years ago. For more information about collecting fossils, here’s a guide on how to go fossil hunting in Dorset!

The most famous of modern palaeontologists is Mary Anning, a woman who grew up incredibly poor at the end of the 18th-century. When Anning first went out to collect fossils, she regarded them as unusual curiosities. However, in time, Anning grew to learn that these curios were actually fossils and she sold them to make money. Mary Anning is also credited as being the first person to discover

If you’re searching for the ultimate seaside escape, then you need to look no further than Lyme Regis. Situated on the South Coast of England, in the county of Dorset, the main town trade has been in tourism for at least two centuries.

Wander around Lyme Regis today, and you can expect to find the Victorian promenade from when the Victorians would vacation there. Elsewhere in the town, hotels can be found in abundance, while the pretty pastel beach huts which line the town beach are further evidence of Lyme Regis’ booming trade in tourism.

Constructed as early as the 14th-century, the Cobb as it is locally known is the hub of fishing activity in the area. Lyme Regis and its surrounding bay are distinctly lacking in natural harbours and so The Cobb was built during the 1300s so as to shelter the town and its many boats from the frequent sea storms that sweep through the area.

Now, the Cobb is a staple of Lyme Regis life and is one of the best places to see the sunset in the area. If you’re looking for the hidden gems of Lyme Regis, then aside from the old prison keep in the town (which can be found opposite Aroma Coffee), you’ll discover a set of steep stairs known as ‘Granny’s Teeth’ somewhere along the Cobb.

There is not one or two, or even three beaches in Lyme Regis. Instead, the town is home to four beaches! All with their own vibe and viewpoint, some are better for fossil collecting, while others are perfect for sitting back, relaxing, and watching the sun go down in the evening. The beaches found in Lyme Regis are as follows; East Cliff Beach, Town Beach, Monmouth Beach, and Church Cliff Beach.

The Sanctuary Bookshop, Lyme Regis: The Narnia Bookstore of Dorset England

For those who love hiking, it’s worth noting that the South West Coast Path is the longest National Trail in England. Stretching a staggering 630 miles along the coastline from the Northern most part of Minehead in Somerset, and all the way around the coastline to Poole Harbour in Dorset, the path actually originated as a route for coastguards to catch smugglers.

Today, you can opt to walk part of the path, or all of it if you so desire. Free to hike along, there is perhaps no other walk in England quite as challenging, nor as beautiful as that of the South West Coast Path. Highlights en route, aside from the fossils of the Jurassic Coastline, include many castles, and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife, including seals!

For history buffs like me, one of the best reasons to visit Lyme Regis is the many museums and cultural sites to see! Of course, the best museum in Lyme Regis is the town museum, known simply as the ‘Lyme Regis Museum’.

Located in a building which stands where the house where Mary Anning was born once stood, the museum documents the history of the town, as well as that of fossil collecting in the surrounding area. Nearby, the Parish Church of St Michael the Archangel provides gorgeous views onto the sea. In the churchyard, you’ll find Mary Anning’s grave.

If you’re a bookworm like me, then I highly recommend visiting the Sanctuary Bookshop in the heart of the town. Close to the town clock, this Narnia-like store stretches over 10 rooms and sells all kinds of wares. Vending everything from lava lamps to old prints to vintage books, you could easily spend hours perusing the shop and searching for treasure.

Another Lyme Regis shop of note is the Lyme Fossil Shop. Situated on Bridge Street, this store has become something of an institution in the town. Opened decades ago, the store has gone from strength to strength, with stock for sale ranging between anything from 99p to well over £1000!

Visited there almost 30 years ago. Enjoyed the town and the town museum near the famous sea wall where "The French Lieutenant's Woman" was filmed. The museum boasted the real story of Lassie and the rescue of shipwrecked passengers and seamen that were laid out on the Church floor. The Burgess Shales next off to the left of the inlet was spectacular. The view of the coast up the hill was spectacular.

Lyme Regis is a seaside town in south-west Dorset in the West Country of England .

Understand [ edit ]

Lyme Regis is a historic unspoiled seaside resort and fishing port on the world-famous Cobb Harbour. Surrounded by beautiful coastlines and countryside, the area has now been awarded World Heritage Site Status; famous for its geology and fossil finds.

The town is famous for "The Cobb", a large harbour wall, that has been featured in novels by Jane Austen (who was a frequent visitor to Lyme Regis). It was used as a location in Persuasion , a film of Jane Austen's novel, and in the film The French Lieutenant's Woman , starring Meryl Streep, based on the book of the same name by local writer John Fowles.

Lyme Regis was the location for the film Ammonite , based on the life of local 19th-century pioneer fossil-hunter Mary Anning, starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan.

The town's name was just "Lyme" until it was granted a Royal Charter in 1284 by King Edward I. This charter is so old that the original Latin word "Regis" is used instead of the usual "Royal" prefix as with Leamington Spa , Tunbridge Wells and Wootton Bassett .

There are lots of fossilised ammonites in the sediment layers in the cliffs, and as weathering occurs, the cliffs are eroded and the fossils are left on the beach.
