These 12 iconic Arizona hotels ranked among the best in the US in Forbes' 2024 Star Awards

forbes travel 5 star hotels

Twelve luxury resorts in Arizona ranked strongly in Forbes Travel Guide's 2024 Star Awards , which was published on Wednesday, Feb. 7. The hotels were touted for their outstanding guest experiences.

Forbes Travel Guide, which describes itself as "the global authority on luxury hospitality," awarded five-star ratings to 544 nationwide properties, including 340 hotels. The survey also honors outstanding restaurants, spas and ocean cruise ships.

"What discerning travelers consider luxury can vary, and opinions about hotels are readily available online," said Amanda Frasier, president of ratings for Forbes Travel Guide, in an interview with The Arizona Republic. That's why she finds it important to offer a fair and unbiased survey that evaluates properties based on guest experiences and the value of what consumers pay for.

VAI Resort, Caesars: Biggest hotel openings and renos in Arizona in 2024

How many Arizona hotels did Forbes recognize?

Forbes recognized 12 Arizona hotels in its 2024 ranking: seven in metro Phoenix, three in Tucson and two in Sedona.

Five hotels received four stars and the remaining six were recognized as Recommended Hotels.

However, only one Arizona hotel received five stars: the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain in Marana, near Tucson. Forbes has recognized the hotel as a five-star property since 2015.

Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North has been recognized as one of Forbes' four-star properties since 2002, the longest of any Arizona hotel on the list. The Phoenician has appeared on the list each year since 1992, but with different ratings; it's been classified as a four-star property since 2003.

All 12 hotels were also recognized on last year's Forbes list , though two were downgraded. The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician in Phoenix is now four stars, and Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort in Tucson is now a Recommended Hotel.

But a lower rating doesn't necessarily reflect diminishing quality, since all the properties on Forbes' list are being singled out for outstanding luxury experiences, Frasier said. What sets a five-star hotel apart from a four-star or Recommended Hotel is the consistency of the service.

How does Forbes rate hotels?

Forbes says it classifies luxury hotels into three categories:

  • Five star recognizes outstanding properties with "virtually flawless service and amazing facilities."
  • Four star means a property of exceptional quality and high levels of service.
  • Recommended properties are identified for "consistently good service and facilities."

Forbes' website says "highly trained inspectors" visit every hotel and resort they recognize, staying at least two nights and assessing the hotel based on more than 900 standards. The anonymous inspectors pay their own way.

Forbes 5-star hotels in Arizona

  • Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain, Marana.

Forbes 4-star hotels in Arizona

  • Canyon Suites at The Phoenician, a Luxury Collection Resort, Phoenix.
  • Enchantment Resort, Sedona.
  • Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North.
  • L'Auberge de Sedona.
  • The Phoenician, a Luxury Collection Resort, Phoenix.

Forbes recommended hotels in Arizona

  • Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort, Tucson.
  • Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, Phoenix.
  • El Conquistador Tucson, A Hilton Resort.
  • JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa.
  • Royal Palms Resort and Spa, Phoenix.

The exterior of Hotel Marcel New Haven, Tapestry Collection by Hilton commands your attention.

If you don’t know Hotel Marcel New Haven, Tapestry Collection by Hilton by name, chances are you’d recognize its facade—especially if you live in the New York Metropolitan Area and have cruised up north via I-95. Prominently planted in an Ikea parking lot in New Haven’s Long Wharf District, the 1968 brutalist concrete masterpiece by the Hungarian-American modernist architect Marcel Breuer commands your attention.

First known as the Armstrong Rubber Company Building then the Pirelli Tire Building, the iconic structure stood vacant for nearly two decades before architect and developer Bruce Redman Becker of Becker + Becker purchased the landmarked building in late 2019. His ambition? To create a climate-conscious and aesthetically pleasing hotel that remained true to Bauhaus’s functional and minimalist roots.

Hotel Marcel New Haven carefully restored many of its building's unique elements.

After years of careful planning (during the pandemic, no less), Hotel Marcel New Haven opened in May of 2022 as the country’s first Passive House-certified hotel. For this distinction, the 165-room property had to meet rigorous standards by demonstrating high energy efficency, resiliency, and exemplary comfort year round.

Making all this happen was no easy task—especially since the hotel is the first of its kind—but from day one Becker was set on having Hotel Marcel operate solely on energy generated on-site without fossil fuels. To that end: Over 1,000 solar panels laid across the buiding’s roof and parking lot source all of the hotel’s electricity. In addition to the guest rooms and common spaces, the electricity runs the laundry facilities, the all-day eatery BLDG —where Chef Megan Gill just launched an enticing happy hour of New England squash hummus, local grass-fed beef sliders, and eco-friendly cocktails—and most interestingly, a backup system allowing Hotel Marcel to operate seamlessly during power outages. Other sustainable measures include 24 EV charging stations and a complimentary EV shuttle for hotel guests. Since opening, Hotel Marcel also gained LEED Platinum status—it’s only the tenth property in the U.S. to have this elite title—and is well on track to be net zero by 2025.

Hotel Marcel New Haven, Tapestry Collection by Hilton historic suites

Beyond accomplishing far more than what most hotels claim in the name of sustainability, Hotel Marcel’s pared-back aesthetic has also caught the eyes of design lovers from all over. The former executive offices and meeting spaces on the eighth floor have been transformed into spacious suites balancing beautifully-restored original details like ceilings and wood panels with muted tones and clean-lined furnishings including Marcel Breuer’s Cesca chair—they’re sublime examples of quiet luxury and timeless style. Even the event spaces impress: Unlike the drab subterranean dens found in most hotels, the ones here are perched on the top floor, lofty, and sport striking elements like concrete floors and exposed steel trusses.

Note this stunning Marcel Breuer granite desk in the lobby adjacent to the main elevators.

Another reason to book a stay at Hotel Marcel? Location. Without traffic, it’s just a 90-minute drive from New York City and offers an unexpected kind of weekend getaway: one that’s chic, truly kind to our planet, and convenient as well. Plus: if you need to stock up on affordable home goods or Swedish snacks, Ikea is right across the parking lot.

Rates can vary widely by room type and season. "We Paid" is intended to give a general sense of price, but you might find considerably different rates for your trip.

When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.

We take advantage of promotional rates, when possible. That means the rate you see above might have included other benefits, such as spa or meal credits.

Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang

Meaning the “green village” in Khmer, 45-villa resort Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang gets the rustic-luxe recipe just right. Just a 15-minute drive from the world-famous Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm temples, Phum Baitang immerses you in the natural beauty of the Cambodian countryside.

The eco-conscious resort, which was designed by Paris-based AW2 studio, has been modeled on a traditional Cambodian village, albeit with lots of contemporary and luxurious touches. The result is a collection of spacious, stilted wooden villas — all peppered across lush green paddy fields and manicured gardens.

Half the fun is exploring the setting: a network of wooden walkways guides you around the grounds’ restaurants, bars, enormous pool and temple-like spa. There’s much to do nearby as well, from Angkor Wat to the Old Market, which sells handcrafted souvenirs and delicious street food.

  • The dramatic infinity pool is a sight to behold with 50 meters of inviting saltwater, as well as relaxing sunbeds and thatched-roof salas on all sides.
  • The beautiful Siem Reap hotel stretches across20 acres of lemongrass meadows, gardens and paddy fields.
  • Though you feel miles away from everything thanks to the quiet surroundings, nothing is too far away. In just 15 minutes, you can be in the heart of the 9th-century Angkor Archaeological Park — Cambodia’s most important the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also close by is downtown Siem Reap, where you'll find lots of restaurants, charming French colonial architecture and the Old Market.
  • If you’re celebrating a milestone or “just because” moment, ask about the private dining experiences, which take place in the midst of the rice terraces or on your villa’s terrace. Before dinner, the hotel will craft a personalized menu to ensure the meal is perfect.
  • Visitors interested in bringing some Cambodian culinary skills home with them can learn all about Khmer traditions at a private cooking class. Guided by one of the hotel’s talented chefs, you will shop at a local market for ingredients and stop by the property’s garden to pluck herbs. After the legwork, you’ll make a three-course Khmer meal, paired with fresh rice from the hotel’s paddy fields.
  • The Phum Baitang Kids Club overflows with games, arts, crafts, classes, puzzles and activities — including a rice-harvesting experience — plus there are always dedicated staff members on hand to oversee the fun. The luxury hotel is also happy to arrange extra roll-away beds and baby cots in your room, if needed.
  • Explore the grounds with a complimentary bike rental. Take off in the early morning to say hello to the resident water buffalo and snap some dramatic photos of the misty paddy fields.
  • The hotel harvests rice all year long (which draws the water buffalo) and even gifts bags of grains to guests as a keepsake.
  • Health-conscious foodies will rejoice when they see the onsite herb garden. Alongside indigenous herbs, the chefs also grow everyday staples like basil, lemongrass, garlic and chilli, all of which make regular appearances in your meals.
  • Celebrities love Phum Baitang for its remote natural scenery, rustic design and sustainable ethos. In fact, Angelina Jolie rented out the entire resort during a film shoot in 2015 to soak up the unforgettable surroundings.
  • The hotel is home to two types of villas — 25 Terrace Villas and 20 Pool Villas — both of which promise uninterrupted views of the lush, green landscape.
  • Designed like traditional Khmer family homes, the stilted villas aim to provide an authentic — albeit luxurious — Cambodian experience. From shutters made of woven bamboo to straw-thatched rooftops to carved wooden headboards, wood is the material of choice. The extensive use of raw materials creates a warm, natural atmosphere.
  • The interiors are in line with the exteriors, incorporating simple yet tasteful décor in an earthy palette of creams, browns and pale greens.
  • If you’re staying in one of the 646-square-foot Terrace Villas, look forward to an understated bedroom and comfy outdoor lounge area on your own terrace. The Pool Villas provide even more space at 775 square feet, as well as a private plunge pool, garden area and lounge pavilion.
  • No matter which villa you choose, rest assured you won't be sacrificing any creature comforts. All feature Aesop amenities, a Nespresso machine, luxurious rain shows and enormous egg-shaped bathtubs carved from local stone.
  • Head to the all-day restaurant Bay Phsar for stunning views of the rice paddies as well as an array of salads, pizzas and casual Khmer dishes, like beef banana blossom salad and nom ben chok curry soup.
  • Open for dinner only, fine-dining restaurant Hang Bay adapts international and local dishes to create exciting fusion creations. Appetizers take the form of steamed Kep blue crab meat with Vietnamese caviar and turmeric tofu wrapped in betel leaves, while mains include salt-crusted sea bass and grilled Takeo river prawn with green curry. Be sure to book a table outside so you can enjoy the sunset while you dine.
  • Come evening, there’s no better place to unwind than the alfresco Pool Bar, where cocktails and housemade juices make for excellent sundowners.
  • Another option is the Cigar & Cocktail Lounge, which oozes colonial-era atmosphere with its location inside a renovated farmhouse where rattan wing chairs and ornate rugs set the scene. This is a real treat with a menu of Cuban cigars, cocktails (made with homegrown herbs and botanicals) and an extensive wine list.
  • After a long day of exploring Angkor’s incredible temples and buzzing Siem Reap, get some R&R at Spa Temple, which is as regal as it sounds. A tribute to Cambodia’s ancient temples, the spa is carved by stonemasons with strong Angkor-era design elements.
