It was great experience!

From Delhi : Private Day Trip to Haridwar and Rishikesh Tour

From Delhi : Private Day Trip to Haridwar and Rishikesh

The trip from New Delhi to Haridwar and Rishikesh was outstanding. Both locations are holy, peaceful lands and ancient cities in which the Ganga is a major presence. Haridwar is among the towns in where the Ganga exits the Himalayas and is incredibly beautiful. Rishikesh, a very spiritual town was also amazing with its various ashrams and is the yoga capital of the world. Ganga Aarti Rishikesh is definitely a sight to behold. My guide Sanjeev, was excellent and apart from learning a lot from him through his extensive knowledge of these places and in India in general, was very hospitable and kind and proved more like family and then as a guide. Bunty, also very kind and polite, proved to be a great driver, going from place to place with relative ease and the transportation used was roomy and comfortable. The scenic beauty and calmness that was felt all throughout these places is what I'll remember the most as well as Sanjeev and Bunty, who made this trip all the more an incredible experience.

He always had water ready for us when we had been out & his kindness & care was much appreciated. Highly recommend this tour, we only wished we had stayed longer!

India Yoga and Mediation Tour in Himalayas - 10 Days

My trip was very nice with a lot of amazing experiences. With Amazing India Tours I always had a contact person, which replies fast and reliable. So at the beginning it was very relaxing for me to have everything organized while I was busy processing all the new informations and stimuli. After a while when you got used to the country, it was not the money worth it anymore. For example I should have paid 50€ for a train ticket, but in reality it was 7-8€ max. They gave untypical recommendations for tips too. They also weren't as understanding in my change of the plans because I got sick during the time. All in all the program was fantastic, the driver and guides very friendly. So all in all good!

What people love about rishikesh tours.

We had a great trip to Haridwar and Rishikesh. We wanted to witness the Ganga Aarti and the trip owner was courteous to adjust our itenary to our wishes. Our driver Gopi arrived punctual to our hotel. We drove to Haridwar in a comfortable vehicle with enough stops for food and water. He was a great company. He knew the roads so well and navigated us away from the many traffic congestion points. We arrived at Haridwar around 11 walked where we met our guide and we walked along the temples on the that's of the holy Ganges. Then we proceeded to Rishikesh where we crossed the river with a ferry and visited a lot of temples and holy places and crossed back on Ram Jhula. We returned to Haridwar and witnessed the Ganga Aarti on the ghats. Our guide was knowledgeable, gave us a lot of information and mythological background to the holy places we were visiting.Since he was a local, it was a cakewalk to navigate through the cities. He took us to a place Chotiwala for lunch, wasn't really the best place we had food at. Apart from that it was beautiful tour along the Ganges with a pious end. Absolutely recommend this trip!

The Complete Guide to Rishikesh, India: the Birthplace of Yoga

rishikesh tour map

Travel Wild /Getty Images

How to Get There

Best time to visit, things to do, where to eat and drink, where to stay, things to do nearby.

Rishikesh, as the birthplace of yoga, attracts spiritual-seekers who come to meditate, do yoga, and learn about other aspects of Hinduism. The whole town is considered sacred, and it’s believed that meditation there leads to salvation. Despite the growing number of visitors, the town’s lanes and alleys retain an old-world charm, and it remains a wonderful place to relax and unwind among nature. It has a distinctively peaceful, uplifting, and international feel. Rishikesh is situated on the banks of the Ganges River, surrounded by hills on three sides, not far from Haridwar in Uttarakhand. Plan your trip with this Rishikesh travel guide.

Rishikesh is situated on the banks of the Ganges River, surrounded by hills on three sides, not far from Haridwar in Uttarakhand.

The nearest airport is Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport, 35 kilometers (22 miles away). The airport is actually closer to Rishikesh than it is to Dehradun! Expect to pay 1,500 rupees (around $19) for a taxi to Rishikesh from the airport. Shubh Yatra Travels offers a reliable service. However, it's cheaper to travel to Rishikesh by road from Haridwar if you're on a budget.

As Rishikesh is at the foothills of the Himalayas, it provides a fantastic escape during the hotter months. Therefore, the best time to visit is between March and April and September to October. Temperatures soar in May. Rishikesh is best avoided during the monsoon months from July to August, as it receives heavy rainfall. Rafting is also closed during this time. Winter, from November until February, is cold but generally pleasant. So, bring woolens. Many people consider the couple of months after the monsoon to be the best time to visit, as the landscape is alive, green, and soothing.

Those interested in yoga shouldn't miss the International Yoga Festival , held in Rishikesh in March each year. The week-long festival is one of the biggest annual yoga gatherings in the world. Attendees participate in a comprehensive program of yoga classes and evening discussions with some of India's leading spiritual leaders. There are also vegetarian cooking classes and the Yoga Aid Challenge charity fundraiser.

Rishikesh is one of the most popular destinations for yoga in India. There are numerous ashrams and styles of yoga and meditation to choose from. Hence, it's crucial to investigate which best meets your needs. Check out these top Rishikesh ashrams for yoga and meditation to get an idea of what's available. The main spiritual district is known as Swarg Ashram, and you'll also find plenty of ashrams there. Plus, food stalls and shops.

Rishikesh is an ideal place to wander around and explore on foot, although auto-rickshaws are readily available for transport. Make sure you watch out for the plentiful monkeys that are quite a menace, particularly on the bridges. Unfortunately, the iconic Lakshman Jhula suspension bridge was closed in 2019 because it had become old and unsafe. There are plans to build a new glass-floored bridge next to it. Venture down to the ghats lining the river and relax amid the daily goings-on. You can also take a boat across the river near Ram Jhula as an alternative to walking across the bridge.

People gather at Parmarth Niketan ashram (in the Swag Ashram area) to experience the Ganga Aarti (worship ritual with fire) every evening.

If you're interested in learning about Indian cuisine and how to make it, don't miss the classes offered by Cooking Masala.

You may have heard that the famous English band The Beatles visited the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1960s to learn meditation. They also wrote about 40 songs there. The ashram is located within Rajaji National Park, and it recently re-opened for tourists after three decades. Its remaining walls have been decorated with amazing graffiti artwork by artists worldwide under The Beatles Cathedral Gallery community project. The entry cost is 150 rupees for Indians and 600 rupees for foreigners. Students pay 50 rupees.

Ayurveda is popular in Rishikesh. You'll be able to feast on delicious Ayurvedic, organic, and healthy food. Head to Ayurpak (which also provides homestay accommodations and these jungle cottages ), Ramana's Organic Cafe, or Pure Soul Organic Cafe & Kitchen. In addition, Nature Care Village is a wonderful organic farm specializing in raw food, yoga, and meditation retreats. You can learn about the properties of various medicinal plants and their uses from experts there too. (Read reviews of Nature Care Village and book on Tripadvisor ). If you're keen on getting professional Ayurvedic treatment, Hemadri Ayurveda Center is recommended. Vedic Ayurved also gives some of the best Ayurvedic massages in Rishikesh.

Rishikesh is a great place to shop for religious items, books, clothes, jewelry, and handicrafts. The main market areas are around Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula.

Because Rishikesh is a holy town, eggs, meat, and alcohol are difficult to find there.

However, Rishikesh does have some groovy cafes to hang out in. The Little Buddha Cafe is a delightfully laid-back tree-house cafe at Lakshman Jhula, providing views of the Ganges River and fabulous international food. Cafe de Goa , near Lakshman Jhula bridge, also looks out over the Ganges River and serves various dishes, including Continental cuisine. The 60's cafe (Beatles Cafe) in the Laxman Jhula area has a Beatles theme and music to go with it. Bistro Nirvana is recommended for its rustic setting featuring bamboo and clay furnishings. Head to The Sitting Elephant on the rooftop of Hotel EllBee or Jal & Jalebi at Hotel Ganga Kinare for upmarket and fine dining. On the other side of the river, Chatsang Cafe ("where food meets the soul") offers healthy and contemporary food with a twist.

Substantial discounts are usually possible at hotels during non-peak times, so do ask! For smaller hotels, it's best to just turn up. If you prefer to book in advance and stay somewhere reputable, here are the best Rishikesh hotels and guesthouses for all budgets. The article also contains information about the various areas in Rishikesh to help you choose where will suit you best. If you're looking for inexpensive accommodations, several groovy backpacker hostels have opened up in the area. Zostel and Bunk Stay are popular.

Shivpuri is a highly recommended side trip, especially if you're into adventure. Located 22 kilometers (14 miles) upstream, it's a place of mesmerizing natural beauty. You'll find excellent white water rafting with Grade 3 and 4 rapids. Tented accommodations with attached bathrooms, such as those provided by Camp AquaForest and Camp Ganga Riviera , add to the uniqueness of the setting in the middle of white sand beach and jungle. There's also an excellent bungee jump zone and Asia's longest zip-line on the road to Neelkanth at Mohanchatti village (about 20 minutes from Rishikesh). Mini-bus transport is provided from Rishikesh.

A side trip to Haridwar is also worthwhile to experience the very different atmosphere and evening Ganga Aarti there.

Widely known as one of the holiest towns of India, Rishikesh is associated with several legends and mythological tales. The first one states that a sage by the name of Raibhya Rishi performed a strict penance on the banks of river Ganga. Therefore, the place became popular by the name of Hrishikesh, another name for Lord Vishnu and was later re-named as Rishikesh. The 'Kedar Khand' of Skanda Purana, also mentions the existence of Indrakund at this very point.

While the other legend states that Lord Rama indulged in deep meditation here for annihilating Ravana and it was here that Lakshmana, the younger brother of Rama crossed the mighty river using a jute rope bridge. However, the original bridge was later replaced by an iron rope suspension bridge in 1889 and a similar bridge called Ram Jhula was made in 1986. Amazing Travel Stories By Our Travelers

1. ishpreet kaur: our adventurous holi celebration at rishikesh.

Duration: 1N/2D

Accommodation: Camping tent

Experience cherished: Food, rafting and pool party

Come back for: Adventurous trips

As we had a long Holi vacation, my friends and I decided to go for a short adventurous vacation. I came across TravelTriangle weekend gateway advertisement where we checked tour packages for Rishikesh. We submitted our query on the TravelTriangle website and soon we received an email from the travel expert. The itinerary shared by the travel expert matched our expectation and we booked our Rishikesh travel packages via TravelTriangle which included transportation, meals, stay and adventurous activities.

Our Rishikesh holidays commenced the moment we boarded the TravelTriangle bus from Akshardham Metro Station, New Delhi. The tour guide introduced himself to the travellers once the bus started for our destination. Soon the travellers started chatting with each other which created quite a friendly environment.

Next morning, we reached Rishikesh where we checked-in at the scenic luxury camp. We had breakfast there and got ready for our adventure activities. We took a short walk through the jungle and reached the river crossing venue. We were supposed to cross two hills, upside down over the proverbial river. After crossing the river, we were taken for another adventure activity where we crossed the tricky Burma bridge. There are a plethora of thrilling activities to indulge, so don’t wait and plan well in advance your trip, so as to reduce Rishikesh trip cost.

We exhilarated our adventurous experience there and headed back to the campsite for lunch. We were surprised with the food that appeased our taste buds in the foothills of the Himalayas!

In the evening, we assembled around the pool at our campsite and celebrated Holi. We had an amazing celebration and enjoyed the festival as one big family. After Holi celebrations, we got ready for bonfire dinner.

We checked out from our campsite next morning and headed for the venturesome River rafting. It was a 27-km long river rafting course and we enjoyed it wholly. Though, I got a little nervous in the beginning but soon I started enjoying bumping, sliding and splashing through the water of Ganges. After rafting, we started back for Delhi.

It was an adventurous expedition that lured me to revisit the place for more dauntless experiences!

2. Harkirat Kaur: Adventurous and luxurious, our escapade to Rishikesh!

Experience cherished: Rafting, adventure activity and DJ night

Come back for: Serenic beauty

My friends and I (10 persons) wanted to start adventure trips during our free time and Rishikesh came out to be the common option selected by our group of 10 budding adventurers. As we had already traveled on weekend getaway packages offered by TravelTriangle, we checked the Rishikesh tour packages on their website where we booked our Rishikesh holidays.

We had to report Akshardham metro station at 11 pm from where we left for our adventurous holidays in Rishikesh. We reached Rishikesh next morning and checked-in to a luxurious campsite. I got fascinated by the panoramic beauty at the foothills of the Himalayas. We had breakfast there and relaxed for sometime. I felt revived, admiring the vista while listening to my favourite music.

In the afternoon, we left for our adventure activities. Our group was quite excited about these activities as adventure was the main reason that attracted us to this beautiful place. It was an exhilarating two hour trek that took us to a small divergent tributary of Ganga. We enjoyed the activities and later came back to our campsite for the DJ night. DJ night was entirely a fun-filled experience and we savored the moments spent!

Next morning, we left for river rafting after having breakfast at the campsite. Our rafting course started from Shivpuri, Rishikesh, where we were given safety tips by their expert. Rafting down the river Ganga was an amazing experience. However, I got a little scared during rapids but after sometime we all started enjoying it and eagerly waited for more rapids to come!

After completing our rafting course we headed back to Delhi. Although, it was a short adventurous break, we look forward to revisiting the place as it had too many things to explore.

3. Mansi Kashayap: Exploring the tranquil artistry of nature st Rishikesh!

Experience cherished: White water rafting

Come back for: Bungee jumping

We, a group of 6 close friends planned to go for a short vacation, away from the scorching Delhi summers. We started looking for Rishikesh holiday packages on the internet. We were looking for a package that matched our requirements along with being safe for women as it was our first ‘all girls’ trip. A friend of mine suggested TravelTriangle and shared his experience with them. We checked the Rishikesh tour packages at TravelTriangle website and mentioned our requirements. Soon our Travel expert shared an itinerary which was planned according to our expectations.

We boarded the TravelTriangle bus at Akshardham metro station and were surprised with the friendly and modest approach of our guide. We thought that our bus journey might be boring but our guide indulged all the travellers in friendly conversation and soon we ascertained being a part of one big group of travellers.

We reached Rishikesh early morning where we checked-in at the famous camping tents in the serene beauty of Uttarakhand. The place had truly majestic view with mountain range all around us. We had breakfast and relaxed for sometime. Later we went for various adventurous activities for which we walked down the woods and later crossed a tributary of Ganga. Our evening at campsite was well-planned and we enjoyed the food and music at the DJ night.

Next morning we left for river rafting and enjoyed every single minute of our river rafting course. It was an incredible weekend that boosted us to plan more such adventure trips in future!

Your perfect 3-day Rishikesh itinerary

by middha on March 28, 2022

Planning a trip to the north this summer? Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, famous as the world’s Yoga Capital, is the perfect destination to calm your nerves and chill your brains out. Doesn’t matter if you’re an adventure junkie or someone who prefers tranquility; Rishikesh has activities and attractions to keep you enthralled for a good number of days! Here’s a splendid 3-day-long Rishikesh itinerary that includes bits for every mood and promises a trip the traveler will cherish forever! The best part- this trip won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

Reaching Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

Rishikesh is a breathtaking tehsil in Uttarakhand that lies in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas. There’s hardly a person who hasn’t heard of this adventure seeker’s heaven. Thanks to its massive popularity, the small town is well connected by roads, trains, and airplanes.

Road: Rishikesh stands at a distance of 20 km from Haridwar, 45 km from Dehradun, 223 km from Chandigarh, and 238 km from Delhi. It takes less time to reach the town in one’s own car. However, if it isn’t available, one can easily find and hop onto UTC buses or private cabs for Rishikesh.

Train: Haridwar’s railway station falls closest to Rishikesh. The second closest is Dehradun’s. Cabs and buses directed to Rishikesh are easily available at these railway stations.

Air: If one’s traveling by air, they’ll have to get off at Dehradun’s airport and find a bus or taxi that’ll take them to Rishikesh.

Day 1 in Rishikesh

Lakshman Jhula: Begin your trip with Rishikesh’s poster boy, the Lakshman Jhula. Did you know that close to the Lakshman Jhula hangs its twin named Ram Jhula? Well, now you do.

Lakshman Jhula - Rishikesh's biggest attraction

According to the folklore, Ramayana’s Lakshman crossed the Holy Ganga at this very spot using two jute ropes. The 450 ft long iron suspension bridge was built in 1929 to honor the same. It connects Pauri to Tehri.

Ram Jhula: As you move about 2 km ahead, you’ll come across a replica of Lakshman Jhula, only a little bigger in size. This bridge was built by Uttar Pradesh’s Public Works Department, with the help of the folks at Sivanand Ashram .

Ram Jhula, RIshikesh

Lakshman Mandir: This ancient temple was built by Kashmir’s King a few centuries ago. The temple still stands intact in a pretty impressive shape.

rishikesh tour map

Kailash Niketan Temple: This temple is popular by the name Terah Manzil Mandir (a 13-story temple in Hindi). The premises hold numerous temples dedicated to different deities. The temple is also decorated with attractive murals and sculptures.

Kailash Niketan Temple, Rishikesh

Triveni Ghat: Proceed towards this tranquil ghat once the sun begins to set. Reserve the evening to participate in the very famous Ganga Aarti.

rishikesh tour map

Thousands of tourists gather to witness this grand event; hence it’s advisable to reach a little early and reserve the best spot for yourselves.

Day 2 at Rishikesh

Wake up as early as you can and throw on your activewear. Today, you’re headed for some exhilarating adventures.

Yoga by the Ganga Ghat: For many, Rishikesh is synonymous with yoga. It’s an absolute must to indulge in a session of yoga with a captivating view of the holy river when in town. There are numerous camps and classes taking place by the river early in the morning.

Yoga by the Ganga Ghat, Rishikesh.

Remember not to snooze your alarms, okay?

Bungee Jumping: This is when you’ll find out why Rishikesh also happens to be famous as the adventure capital of India. Bungee jumping would cost you around INR 3550. This excludes the INR 100, which you’ll have to pay as an entry fee. Some very important things to make a note of before you enroll yourselves for the plunge are-

Bungee Jumping

  • You won’t be allowed to jump if you’re wearing a skirt, a saree, a lungi, or similar other things. It’s mandatory to wear jeans, tights, shorts, or other similar bottoms, and comfortable shoes in order to perform this activity.
  • The activity might be postponed if the weather is unfavorable.
  • You won’t be allowed to participate if you aren’t carrying your photo ID. Also, PAN cards are not considered acceptable proof of identity.
  • The area is closed on Tuesdays. Hence, no bungee jumping on that day of the week.

The list of other similar activities includes the Flying Fox ride. Anyone above the age of 12 can enroll. It costs around INR 1800 per person.

You can book your slots online on Jumpin Heights ’ official website. PS, they also provide Dare to Jump certificates! 😀 😀

Neelkanth Temple: This temple dedicated to Lord Shiva sits at the altitude of 4363 ft. If vibrance is your aesthetic, you’ll surely be captivated by the colorful entry to this temple. The gate also showcases a number of tiny sculptures that you’d love to capture on your camera.

Lord Shiva's Neelkanth Temple, Rishikesh

Indian folklore tells that this is the spot where Lord Shiva consumed the poison that emanated from the sea.

His throat turned blue as a consequence, and thus, he got the name Neelkanth.

Day 3 at Rishikesh

River Rafting in Rishikesh : Who visits Rishikesh and doesn’t go for river rafting? That’s like having pizza without cheese. Rafting in this tehsil starts from INR 600 (9 km), and goes up till INR 2500 (35 km), depending upon the distance and route you choose. The best months to go for river rafting are from February to June. It closes down in the monsoon season and resumes sometime in the middle of September.

rishikesh tour map

For those who’re concerned, it’s very safe if you follow the instructor’s instructions carefully.

Click here to book your river rafting package online.

Neer Garh Waterfall : Looking for a view untouched by civilization? Put visiting this waterfall on top of your bucket list. Neer Garh Waterfall is situated amid the lush green woods in the Shivpuri area, almost 6 km away from the main city. A trek from the Lakshman Jhula to the falls shouldn’t take more than 1 hour. The entry ticket to the falls costs around INR 40 per person. Do carry a set of spare clothes. The water may invite you inside. One can also enjoy a piping hot bowl of Maggi along with some chai by the breathtaking view.

Neer Garh Waterfalls

Beatles Ashram, a.k.a. Chaurasi Kutia : How old were you when you discovered that an Indian yogi inspired THE BEATLES to study yoga and meditation in his ashram? Yeah, right! The legendary Beatles stayed at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram in Rishikesh, away from the paparazzi for three long months, to find inner peace.

The Beatles Ashram, Rishikesh

We deem this stay very productive as the Beatles composed around 40 brilliant songs in these three months. Upon entering, one can find several quotes and lyrics painted on the walls.

Locals have to pay INR 150-200 to enter this hard-to-find attraction. The premises has around a hundred meditation rooms, decorated with vibrant graffiti, and 84 huts, where the disciples must have stayed once upon a time.

Where to eat in Rishikesh?

Considering the town’s popularity, numerous *good* eateries have opened in Rishikesh. Here, we’ve compiled a few restaurants in Rishikesh that experience the maximum footfall.

The Little Buddha Cafe, Tapovan : Enjoy the sound of whooshing waters while you’re eating? How about the charm of rustic interiors? Little Buddha Cafe offers it all. The eatery boasts of an extra-large vegetarian menu, and almost everything served is finger-licking good. It’s a must-visit restaurant in Rishikesh!

The Little Buddha Cafe at Tapovan, Rishikesh.

60’s Beatles Cafe, Tapovan : Beyond-amazing dishes and beverages, and furniture that’ll remind you of a doll’s house – this is how we’d describe this very famous eatery of Rishikesh. Some of the highly recommended dishes are kinds of pasta, sandwiches, and pizzas.

The 60's Beatles Cafe, Rishikesh

OM Freedom Cafe : Tourists on a budget can find the best food at OM Freedom Cafe. You shouldn’t expect very fancy interiors, but the eatery does boast a mesmerizing view. From crepes to paranthas, pizzas to falafels, there’s nothing that this famous cafe in Rishikesh doesn’t serve.

9 Awesome Places You Must Explore in Rishikesh

Nestled amidst the Himalayas along the Ganges river, Rishikesh offers a mix of adventure and spiritual vibes. From ancient Hindu temples to yoga ashrams to wildlife reserves, Rishikesh has something for every traveler. This guide will tell you about the top 9 tourist spots and activities you just cannot miss out on during your visit. Let's dive in!

1.Evening Aarti at Triveni Ghat

No trip to Rishikesh is complete without attending the magical Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat as the sun sets. "Triveni" refers to the "three rivers" of Ganga, Yamuna and mystical Saraswati converging here. The aarti is a fire ritual filled with chanting, conch blowing, drum beating and flower offerings. As the flaming lamps are lowered to the river, you'll feel a sense of spirituality watching the glowing diyas float along the dark waters.

  • Duration: Around 45 minutes
  • Best views: Upper level seating at Pandit Sevaram Kund's aarti platform
  • Other highlight: Dip in the holy Sangam waters

The aarti happens every evening around 6-6.30 pm. Arrive early to grab the best spots.

2.Walk Across Lakshman Jhula for Stunning Views

The iconic Lakshman Jhula pedestrian suspension bridge spanning the Ganges river is a top landmark of Rishikesh. As you walk across with the breezy river views and mountainous landscape, it feels like you're walking among the clouds! Mythology says Lakshmana crossed the river here on jute ropes, hence the name. The 13-storey Trayambakeshwar temple perched atop a hill on the western end is magnificent. When you get to the eastern side, there's markets, cafes like the German Bakery and many ashrams and temples to check out in the Swarg Ashram area.

  • Length: 450 feet long, 5 feet wide
  • Built in: 1929, replaced in 2008 after floods
  • Entry fee: No charge to use the bridge

3.Marvel at Religious Tales on Ram Jhula

Similar in style to Lakshman Jhula, Ram Jhula crosses the Ganga just 2 km south, connecting Swarg Ashram to the Sivananda Ashram side. Pilgrims use it to access ashrams like Gita Bhawan and Swarg Ashram. As you take in the Himalayan landscape from the bridge, you'll realize how ancient legends and myths inspire every corner of Rishikesh.

  • Length: Around 705 feet long
  • Built in: 1986
  • Nearby attractions: Geeta Bhawan, Parmarth Niketan Ashram

You can easily spend 1-2 hours around Ram Jhula exploring its cafes and shopping stalls after taking in the views.

4.Hike up to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Neelkanth Mahadev temple is located on a hilltop 32 km from Rishikesh. The temple is encircled by dense forest and offers splendid vistas of snow-clad Himalayan peaks. Mythology says this is the place where Shiva drank poison that turned his throat blue, hence the name Neel (blue) Kanth (throat). The main shrine has a sculpture depicting the Samudra Manthan myth.

  • Temple timings: 6 AM to 9 PM daily
  • Trek duration: Around 5 hours one way
  • Best month for trekking: September to June

The temple can be reached via a 5 km trek through the Rajaji National Park forests. Serious devotees take up the trek as a pilgrimage.

5.Immerse Yourself in Art and History at Beatles Ashram

In 1968, the Beatles visited Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Transcendental Meditation training center in Rishikesh, which catapulted it to global fame. That ashram is now in ruins, taken over by the forest department post its abandonment in 1997 and called "Beatles Ashram". But it's open for visits where one can see the graffitied meditation chambers of each of the Fab Four and get a glimpse into that hippie era.

  • Location: Around 3 km from Ram Jhula on the eastern banks
  • Main highlights: The Beatles Cathedral gallery and murals
  • Entry fee: INR 600 for foreigners, INR 150 for Indians

Try to spot a camel, deer or even monkeys as you walk among the overgrown vegetation and abandoned stone buildings here.

6.Spot Tigers on Safaris through Rajaji National Park

Spread across 820 sq km, the Rajaji National Park is home to Asian elephants, tigers, leopards, deer species like Sambar and Chital, and over 350 bird species. Visitors can go on jeep safaris organized by the forest department for wildlife spotting. While a tiger sighting is rare, elephants and antelopes are commonly seen. The scenic beauty of the forests against the Shivalik mountain range is fantastic.

  • Distance from Rishikesh town: Around 18 km
  • When to visit: Mid-November to mid-June
  • Entry fees: INR 150 per person, separate jeep safari charges

Dress in camouflage for the best chance of spotting a tiger.

7.Get Your Heart Racing with Adventure Sports

If an adrenaline rush is what you seek, Rishikesh offers a slew of adventure activities like white water rafting, bungee jumping and cliff jumping to get that adrenaline pumping! Rafting along Grade 3 and 4 rapids of the Ganges starting from places like Shivpuri and Marine Drive is immensely popular here. For stunning views minus the effort, try the giant swing or flying fox at Jumpin Heights in Mohanchatti village.

  • Most popular season: September to June
  • Rafting charges: INR 850 to 2000 per person
  • Other activities: Trekking, camping, waterfall rappelling

Don't forget to scream out loud when you take that 60 meter bungee jump for the thrill of a lifetime.

8.Experience Ashram Life at Parmarth Niketan

Parmarth Niketan along the Swarg Ashram area is Rishikesh's largest and most renowned ashram. It offers yoga and meditation classes in a serene environment alongside Ganges river views. You can stay as a hostel paying guest to really soak in the simple spiritual lifestyle. The evening aarti performed at the Parmarth ghat is also popular. The ashram promotes humanitarian causes like environmental cleanliness and girl education.

  • Founded in: 1942
  • Also offers: Ayurvedic massage center, International Yoga Festival
  • Average accommodation charge: INR 1200 per night

Try doing the relaxing Iyengar yoga and learn about India's ancient science of health at Parmarth.

9.Ride the Rapids on a Shivpuri Rafting Trip

And what's a Rishikesh vacation without rafting on the Ganges? The undisputed rafting destination here is Shivpuri, located about 19 km north of town. It's surrounded by pristine forests and beaches on the river banks. Rafting along thrilling Grade 3 and 4 rapids with names like "Return to Sender" and "Roller Coaster" is an experience you must try! Travel agents offer full day rafting trips from Rishikesh with meals and free time at Shivpuri included.

  • Rapids difficulty level: Grade 1 to 4
  • Rafting season: October to May
  • Distance covered: Around 24 km
  • Rafting cost: INR 600 to 1300 per person

Ensure you can swim, wear sport shoes, caps and apply waterproof sunscreen before that splashy rafting adventure.

So whether you're a spiritual soul, nature lover, photography enthusiast or thrill seeker, Rishikesh has something for everyone. With so many awesome tourist spots covered, it makes planning your Rishikesh itinerary both exciting and tough! But this list of top attractions and activities will help you have an unforgettable trip that spices up your Himalayan vacation.
