Check Engine Light, Traction Control Disabled and blinking Cruise Control

On the way back from the General Store the Check Engine Light illuminated. Also illuminated the Traction Control Disabled light and the Cruise Control light is flashing. No noticeable problems driving the car. Warning lights remained on after turning off and back on. I pulled the codes and got the following: C0071 Change Range Of Steering Angle Sensor Is Too Big C0042 Power Supply Voltage Failure C0052 Steering Wheel Position Sensor Signal 'A' I gather that these codes are all related to the VDC system and that’s why the warning lights are on. I performed an oil change last week and replaced the battery a month ago but I don’t think that work has anything to do with this problem. The roads have been super slushy lately so I’m inclined to go looking for dirty, corroded or water-logged sensors or wiring. Where should I start? 🐦

start by checking for a loose battery cable. take advantage of that and clear the codes - remove neg. battery cable, touch it to the pos. cable, (or, step on the brake pedal) re-attach neg. cable. Car may start oddly a coupla times but, that will clear the codes. Monitor how quickly and what codes return - if at all. could be a problem with the clockspring/roll connector in steering column.....?  

Thanks Lucky. I disconnected the battery and discharged everything with the brake pedal. On restart the Check Engine and Traction Control Disabled warning lights reset (they are no longer illuminated) and the Cruise Control indicator stopped blinking. Only one code remained after restart, it was: C0071 Change Range Of Steering Angle Sensor Is Too Big I will do some research on the clockspring/roll connector, thanks for the pointer. 🐤  

Hey there. Funny you mentioned that you changed your oil. I had the exact same dash warning light sequence about a month ago. I cleared the codes and they were gone... All seemingly good. About a week later they came back on. It turns out that the car was extremely low on oil. Once I topped it up the warning lights disappeared and haven't come back on. It could be somehow sensors detected low oil level while you were changing the oil. Not really sure. Just thinking out loud.

what a coincidence - the same dash light combo hit my '09 2.5L tonight - blinking cruise with CEL & traction lit solid. Happened when starting after being driven in the AM and sitting all day. But when I scan for codes, I get none of the ones you did - only (!) a P0302 Cyl 2 misfire detected and a P0302 Cyl 2 misfire detected pending. Based on your conversation with @cardoc and @plain OM in the other thread on the VDC code C0071, I checked the grounds in the engine bay. Had already replaced the head ground straps last fall, so those were good. Checked the two small-gage ones on the passenger side (below ABS body on top of frame rail, and below inlet air filter box on inside of frame rail), the ganged ignition grounds on the intake manifold Cyl #1 runner, the strap under the engine tilt snubber at the firewall, the main ground to the engine block near the starter solenoid, another at the inside of the driver's side frame rail near Cyl #2, and the one on the strut tower behind the fuse box. All were in quite good shape - a little corrosion on the exposed surfaces for some but looked like clean shiny metal in the contact areas. Wire brushed anyway and reassembled. Checked resistance from battery negative post to main engine block ground - even though some of the strands appear corroded or broken, 0.0 ohms resistance was the answer. Also checked to the ABS body ground wire when I had it disconnected - that was about 6k ohm, don't know what it's supposed to be but assuming it's tied to circuitry in the ABS unit and meant to be non-zero. Feel like I should replace the main cables anyway, but doesn't seem to be the issue at the moment. Was going to pull plug #2 but haven't read up on it yet, and after I pulled the boot it was shaping up to be more than I had time for at the moment. Oh yeah, and removed the very old dual USB adapter from the cigarette lighter port. Just in case. I just find it odd that I got the same dash light behavior for a seemingly completely different reason...  

update - learned how to read the codes from the dash display, sure enough there's codes that my Actron didn't pick up. It of course showed for the ECM the P0302 & a "P0000" for the pending cylinder misfire(s), and for the TCM I got a flashing "P" (meaning "receiving DTC", but not sure how to interpret this...), and for the ABS/VDCCM it listed C0047, then C0071, then C0045. I checked the two harness connectors next to the brake pedal that @slowagon had troubles with - everything looked in place, clean, undamaged, untouched even, but I exercised the two plugs anyway to get some movement at the terminals and to make sure they clicked in. Curiously, where that module bracket attaches to the frame, one nut was missing and the other was loose... may be something to this, if that box contains inertial sensors for the VDC? Need to read up on that. [edit - nope, it's the TCM... but curious that I have a blinking "P" in the TCM code group, plus the C0045 in the ABS group?] Tightened the one nut and will get replacement from the hardware store. Also found a second USB adapter, this one plugged into the port in the console armrest. Took it out too. Cleared the misfire codes using the Actron, then checked the on-board display and confirmed the misfire codes cleared but the three C-codes for the ABS system still stored. Started the car and found that the 3 warning lights I had seen (blinking Cruise, solid VDC warning & solid CEL) were gone. Started the car 4 times in a row, hoping to clear the ABS system codes, however they were still stored (though the 3 warning lights did not come back). Maybe need a few more drive cycles to clear them out, presuming the original trigger doesn't return.

It seems this is a random combination of lights that is fairly common and no one has found the surefire culprit based on various googling.

You can activate the system by pressing the cruise control button and the vehicle will keep you at the current speed. So you don’t have to depress the gas pedal to keep the car running. Cars with advanced cruise control systems use sensors at the front bumper to detect vehicles ahead of them and keep the car at a distance to prevent collision.

Like other system components, the cruise control does have issues. And these issues are common with Subaru cars. Most Subaru owners complain of Subaru cruise control light flashing on the dashboard as they drive.

Why does my Subaru cruise control light keep flashing?

The most common reason why the cruise control light is flashing on your Subaru is due to an electrical or mechanical problem. Remember, when the light is flashing, the cruise control system is disabled, so don’t try to turn it on because it won’t work.

In some other cases, the cruise control light may be flashing due to a defective or loose gas cap, a blown fuse for the cruise control, a failing brake pedal switch, or a defective vehicle speed sensor. Let’s have an in-depth look to see how these issues could cause cruise control light flashing on Subaru Outback and other Subaru models.

Blown fuses

The cruise control system consists of several electrical systems protected by a fuse. The fuse can blow up if there’s an electrical power issue, preventing the key components from failing. If that happens, it will disable the cruise control system. In some cases, the car computer will start flashing the cruise control light on the dashboard to notify you that there’s an underlying issue that needs urgent attention.

If you suspect the fuse is blown, replace it and see if that fixes the cruise control system and clear the blinking light on the dashboard.  If that resolves the problem but the fuse blows in no time and the light starts blinking again, you have other electrical issues. Defective speed sensor

The vehicle speed sensor is one of the essential components of the cruise control system. When you activate the cruise control, the onboard computer collects information from the speed sensor to know when to increase and decrease the engine speed.

The vehicle speed sensor is mounted at the tail end of your transmission, and if it malfunctions, the cruise control light will start blinking on the dashboard. The speed sensor is needed to ensure that the speedometer and the odometer work correctly, and without it, the cruise control system will be affected.

If you notice the cruise control light flashing and check engine light is on, check the vehicle speed sensor. A bad speed sensor triggers the check engine light and disables the cruise control system. This sensor cannot be repaired. So, if it is the root cause, the only solution is to replace it with a new one.

Loose gas cap

Believe it or not, the gas cap plays a crucial role in your vehicle’s overall functionality. The gas cap can affect the performance of the cruise control system. For instance, in Subarus, a loose gas cap can cause the cruise control light to blink as you drive. It can also trigger the check engine light to pop on the dashboard. So, a loose gas cap can cause the Subaru Forester check engine light with flashing cruise control to pop on the dashboard.

Faulty mechanical component

If you own an older Subaru car, the cruise control light could be flashing due to a faulty mechanical component. In older models, the cruise control system has a cable, connecting the throttle to an air actuator, which regulates the cable to keep the vehicle at the set speed settings.

If your Subaru check engine light is flashing along with the cruise control light and the brake pedal switch, fuses, and vehicle speed sensors are good, you have a problem somewhere in the cruise control system.

To determine the root cause of the malfunction, you need a mechanic to diagnose the vehicle. The mechanic will inspect all cruise control components and may plug in a scan tool to pull out all the error codes in the vehicle.

It’s okay for the cruise control light to be on when you activate it, but if the light comes on when you are not using the cruise control, or the light starts blinking when you activate it, there’s a problem that needs to be addressed. In most cases, a flashing cruise control light on Subaru is accompanied by the engine warning light.

What to do if your Subaru cruise control light flashing?

Also, check to see if your car battery is charging properly and inspect it for any signs of corrosion. While it may appear weird, it is a common problem.

Dash modules are complicated pieces of equipment, and we won’t even attempt to comprehend how they work. That isn’t to say we can’t test or fix it.

On the power side, we can inspect power inputs, grounds, and wiring for chaffing. There will be two ignitions on your module, as well as a power supply for the logic circuit.

It’s also crucial to inspect the ground. To find high resistance, use a volt drop test.

The dash module is difficult to reach, and higher-end vehicles may require specific tools. Other components, such as the airbag and steering wheel, may need to be removed as well.

Specifically the Cruise Control stick. Has anyone ever noticed the lights flicker when illuminated? It is sporadic. I have not reported it or taken it to the dealer yet. Trying to determine how to reproduce it, if it all possible. The vehicle is barely driven (only on long trips) which means night time driving is infrequent.

Huh, my cruise control stalk also was blinking since day 1. I recorded it through my phone and got a pretty decent result. Naturally I mentioned about it on my 5k miles service back in Oct last year and showed the video to the service advisor. They replaced the whole stalk but the problem came again within a week. They said it was a bad relay on the switch, but I guess that wasn't it. I decided to just live with it and maybe mention it again ... next year. Haven't checked if there's any actual TSB on it though.  

I haven't seen a TSB on it. I did check that first.

I thought I was the only seeing that and figured my eyes are messing with me lol. But yup I can see mines do that from time to time. Never figured out the reason why, but maybe it has something to do with the light sensor on the dash?  

Yeah the first time I encountered that, I thought I was seeing things!!! Until one night I decided to fully concentrate on it, moved the steering wheel back and forth, and saw it. This is the first time I encountered a Toyota with the lit-up cruise control stalk. I've driven those here and there and didn't notice it until now. I think the last Toyota I drove was the Camry, 2012 year model. I may be wrong here.  

At last somebody started this thread... Got the same problem ( cruise control ) We bought our HL around Feb of 2014, then i noticed it probably like 4 days after, when i first drove it night time... It's not always but most of the time...:frown:  

Though I don't think they have the fix yet, might worth mentioning it to your service advisor so that at least they have a record. I know mine is recorded when I check the car service history online through Toyota Owners.  

I think we have a case here, I'm the one with the Rav4 I purchased one in March and went back 3 weeks later to the dealer to show the video I had made of that flickering on the cruise control stalk, after going back and forth they offer me a trade in but for the same model I went ahead and changed it and I have the same problem with this one  

I've spoken with the sales director already I'm going to see what he tells me on Monday to see what are we going to do about this issue, personally I don't feel safe driving my vehicle because I'm thinking there's an electrical shortage happening somewhere that is making that light flicker..  

I have been there, gone through this. Completely understand where you're coming from, however, I can tell you there isn't much to be done at all at this point from the service end at your local dealer. Of course, you should identify this immediately with your ASM, however, even changing the cruise control switch did not fix my customers concern. At this point, master certified techs have ran the diagrams to find a point of failure and have not been able to do so as of yet. I have a feeling we will find something in the spiral cable wiring when it is all said and done. Feel at ease though, Toyota does know of this issue and is seemingly only aesthetics. With these new models, we will see a TSB out at some point updating the part, I am sure. You will also be assured that the cruise is supported with Smart Stop Technology with an override of the electronic throttle body in any event of the brake pedal being pressed. Simply put, the electronic components will not allow the vehicle's cruise to continue to operate even in the event of an electrical short in the cruise control circuit (however technically we are only seeing a lighting short not a cruise control short).

I guess that is why I had to sell my Highlander. Nothing on my Highlander annoyed me to the point of mentioning it--oh, except the flexing sheet metal on the doors.  

I have a 2015 HL XLE and have the blinking sensation going on with my cruise control stick. Dealership rocket scientist guy stated to me there is a ground wire that connectivity is not good and causes the lights on cruise stick to flicker. Toyota is certainly aware of this problem.

Pretty brave tech... The tech who did this is taking an awfully big risk in assuming liability. Considering Toyota has no approved solution yet and the fact that there are several electronic items already tied into the steering wheel, to add an unauthorized modification to the wiring...should something happen to this owners car, Toyota will hang him out to dry.

the only lights that are blinking on & off are my ambients, when i go over bumps. quite annoying.  

Add me to the list of blinking cruise stalks. I thought it was just my eyes going bad because I'd see a dark spot and then when I looked down it was lit. So this happened a number of times and I really blamed my eyes, I thought I had some sort of blind spot or something. Well, last night I caught it in the act and I watched it turnoff and back on several times in my hour drive in the dark. Not dangerous, just distracting and annoying.  

Agreed! At first I thought it was something wrong with my eyes, until I got everything video-recorded... :wink: It was a free fix for me at the dealer so you may want to give it a try as well.

Cruise control light flickering I have the same problem with my 2015 Highlander. They replaced the cruise control switch but still does it. My service manager acts like I am the first to ever report it. They are asking for me to bring it in again...this would be time number three. Mine has been doing it from day one.

I compleatly agree!! I had my sequoia go crazy and have the cruise control take off on me on the highway in the past. I do not trust any Toyota with any shorts in the cruise control areas! I'm angry I'm paying $50,000 for a brand new car with 6,000 miles on it that is broken with no fix that Toyota will not replace or repair!

I had the same problem. Dealer replaced steering column. Problem of cruise control stalk lighting flickering was resolved. 2016 xle  

Wow, if that is the solution no wonder Toyota doesn't want to fix it. $$$$$$$$$

Radio Randomly Turning Off, Dash Lights and Stabilitrac Flickering

I own a 2014 Chevy Cruze LT2 Gen 1 / 1.4 Turbo with 30,000 Miles. Never been in accident and always treated well. Im having an issue with the radio randomly shutting off and turning back on, the music stops and the screen goes blank. At first it was just the radio turning off and the music shutting off and then turning back on... and then....it's still randomly turning off and the screen goes blank but now all of the warning lights and stabilitrack light on the dash will flicker on and off as well when this happens. Sometimes it will happen once and other times it will randomly shut off and turn back on a few times. I took my 2014 Cruze to the same dealership I bought the car from and basically the service writer told me that this issue would have been covered by the GM " Bumper To Bumper Warranty " but unfortunately my " Bumper To Bumper Warranty " has just expired right as the problem started. He told me it would cost me a lot of money to have diagnosed and a lot of money to fix the issue since my " Bumper to Bumper Warranty " has expired. Now, I work for a car sales shop where we have two mechanics. I can fix this on my own as we have all the tools. I just need to know if anyone else has had this exact issue and what exactly was the solution that fixed the problem? Could the issue potentially cause the car to malfunction in a way that results in serious injury/death to driver or passengers? Any information on how to exactly fix this myself would be amazing as I need to save my money as I do not have a lot of money at all. I've heard of other people having the same issue. Thank you!

And if it's not that, it's likely a battery going south. 2-3 years is about par for the factory battery. If you've got access to a sophisticated battery tester, it wouldn't hurt to test it. But start with the cable.

I would bet on the battery cable. Mine had the same symptoms, and the gurus here directed me to that. Local dealer fixed it under the mentioned extended service bulletin, all good since then. Took about a half hour, no charge. Dave

In October my husband and I bought a 2015 LTZ Chevy Cruze. I have been having the same problem with the radio and thanks to this forum I knew it was an issue with the negative battery cable. I brought my car into a service appointment I made 3 weeks ago at a local dealer. On the phone when I made the appointment he agreed that he knew of this issue and as I was having all the issues like the ones listed such as service stabilitrak and turn signal muting, but this morning when I got there, suddenly it didn't cover my car and my model when my vin was entered, even though on the phone they ran my vin and told me it was covered, then he says I can do a radio update for 135$ maybe that will fix it. Long. Story short, I didn't do anything because I have a brain and they're not gonna get over on me lol and will have friend tighten the crimp. As well calling chevy and if they won't address it in calling consumer affairs, as this should not be something I should have to pay as it is a manufacturing defect.

Good luck with that though because even though it says all models 2011 through 2015 when you bring it in they may say you are model isn't covered like they did with mine  

you can purchase Negative Cable - GM (22754271) for about $20 and replace it yourself

Call the dealer and have them run the VIN to see if the negative battery cable replacement has been done on the vehicle. If not, that is free and have them do it. Next would be how old is the battery in the vehicle? Could have the battery tested at a local parts store. They will do this for free.

First of all, my condolences. Secondly, if changing the negative battery cable does not work, give the following a shot.  

Thank you. I called my local chevy dealership and my vehicle is not on the list for a recall which sucks. Its happening more frequent and I noticed the steering wheel pulls abit when this happens. Almost like if im going to change lanes and didnt see a car in my blind spot and quickly corrected getting back in my lane. That's how it feels. I will have my bf check it out thanks for the tips.

Just left a Chevy dealership after being told I would have to pay $185 assessment charge after i described what I was encountering. They said if they found the problem to be the Negative Cable they would charge GMC. Is it likely not that and I would have to pay? I could buy the part myself and do it.

Usually any Dealership will ask you to authorize a nominal amount, although $185 for an hour (I assume) is outrageous, when they could inspect the Cable with a 1/4 hour authorization. I just had another member try to slam me because his time is very precious, he might need to leave the car the whole day, and that might not even solve the problem. All could be true when dealing with the dealer, but if it is the Cable the net cost to you will be free.

I’ve replaced both the positive and negative (ground) cables and still have issues with the stereo turning off and on randomly, so changing the cables isn’t the problem or fix like most responses go to! And the GM members responses of…. I’m sorry to hear this issue you’re dealing with, could you send me the vin of your vehicle to look into yada yada yada, is of NO HELP either!

2014 CRUZE LT RS PACKAGE 85000 MILES. I had the same issue, dealer replaced negative cable. Radio was fine for 2 weeks. Back to dealer changed positive cable and reset system. worked for 3 weeks. After some checking on my own (grounding points) I took off the 5 body grounds on the drivers side and cleaned the contact points, wire brushed the cable ends. Reconnected all wires nice and tight. Voltage dropped from 15.3 to 14.5 at idle. Radio has not given me issues since. 2 months so far. Hope this may help.

I have the same problem. Change the negative battery cable and fuse. Did not fix the problem. I look it to the dealership for diagnostic and told it a screen. We replace the screen for just under 600.00 and my radio turned off less then a mile from the dealership. Any other ideas?

I have just replaced my negative cable but also increased the size to a 35mm cable. I hope this will fix it. My car was playing up as per normal with the dash flickering. After a short stop the car was dead wouldn’t even let me open the door with the key remote. I popped the hood and went to measure the voltage at the battery. I accidentally touched the negative cable coming from the battery and I heard a click and suddenly I now had power to the car. One small touch on the cable is all it took. This lead me to change the negative lead. My decision to up the size was based on the fact it felt hot when I touched the cable so decided to beef up the current carrying capacity as well.  

Hello everyone, my radio still freezes and turning off/on after replacing negative cable and fuse. How can I fix it? It started from a Bluetooth not connecting to my phone 6-7 months ago. At that time, I also replaced the battery and installed Tesla Android type of radio, but didn't like it at all and went back to the original Pioneer audio unit. Since Bluetooth didn't work, I started using Aux and it started turning off/on and develops further, and now it freezes even for a longer time. At this point, don't mind to replacing the audio unit, but concerned it will still be glitching. Can anyone know what the problem can be? Maybe it's shoring out somewhere. How can I test it?

Cruise Control "Main" Issue

I have searched around and can't quite find anyone with my issue.... When I press the main cruise control button, the light doesn't come on the dash and cc doesn't work. The light does however, flicker on sometimes, even when the switch is not in the depressed/on position. I was able to engage cc when the light came on for the few seconds it was on even thought the main was off. Where should I be looking? I don't use it often, but if the fix can be an easy and inexpensive diy then i'd like to have it.... I took a look at the switch itself and cleaned contacts.... checked fuses, horn works, break lights operate normal 2004 Accord LX Thanks!

Psshhh not sure. My CC on/off switch wouldn't stay clicked down in the "ON" position. I could hold it there and engage the CC but that was a pain. I fixed it with a new switch. If your on/off does not stay pushed down the green "cruise" light will not light up on the dash. Does your light up?  

The button stays down, but the light on the dash only comes on when it wants to, intermittently, no matter the position of the button. If the Main light shows on the dash, I AM able to set the speed.... but it flickers off soon after.  

I'd start by testing the switch and making sure it is actually working, even if it is pressed down. If it is intermittent no matter the button position, I would think that the contacts inside the switch are maybe dislodged and occasionally in contact, since there is no way the main light should come on unless that circuit is engaged. I would bet the switch is bad, or the harness the switch is connected to.  

I just tested the switch main button for continuity (pins 1 & 2) and I seem to get a steady signal.... but if it's the wiring harness, why would it get a signal if i have the switch off? I'm tempted to go pull a switch from the pull-a-part place....  

So I put it back in because I have to run some errands, but the cruise power now seems to come on on command.... maybe it's got a good connection now?... will see  

Ok. It's still not working properly. I have more info though... I never use the radio controls, but discovered that they aren't working either - and (i don't know if this would be related but) 9 or so months ago my CD player started misbehaving (CD seemed stuck) and then it lost power. Is it starting to sound like the clock spring? Is there a way to test it? About to watch a video to see if I can tackle this one... my husband is concerned about air bag deployment, but with the battery disconnected for several minutes it shouldn't be a worry correct?  

@bayoudragonfly It could be a bad or poorly adjusted brake pedal switch. If the brake switch is activated it turns off the cruise control. Checking to see if your brake lights flicker when the cruise is not working / flickering could help confirm this. You also don't state whether you have an automatic or a manual. If you have a manual it could be bad or poorly adjusted top clutch pedal switch. The cruise is set to disable as soon as the clutch is pressed at all. Of course if your green Cruise control light is not lighting up to show that it's available (the one that should be constantly on, not the one that only lights up when cruise control has been set), then it's probably not either of these things.  

It's an automatic. I have kept my eye on the brake light in the back window while driving and it seems to work normally. The main light does not come on consistently, only intermittently, and usually not long enough for me to try to set the speed. I am thinking I may just order a clock spring and see..  

I don't know how much a clock spring costs, but I would imagine they aren't cheap. Especially since I've never understood why you would want to turn your cruise control all the way off, I would start by taking your switch out and removing the spring from it. There are YouTube videos that show you how to remove and disassemble the cruise button. I removed the spring from mine when the switch quit staying on, and it's been fine ever since. Or you could also try soldering a jumper wire across the switch to force it on all the time. Both of those would be free tests before you start buying more expensive and harder to install stuff. Good luck!  

Update: Replaced the clock spring and all is working again. Radio Controls and the Cruise... yay! Broke open the old part and could see the damage to the ribbon.

On my 04 Ultra the indicator light for the cruise control blinks on and off between the red and green colors when the cruise control is in the "OFF" position. When I turn the cruise control on and set it everything works as it should and the light stays on a solid green. It acts like there is a loose wire somewhere but I don't know exactly where to look. This problem only happens when the cruise control is in the off position. The light just kinda flickers between red and green. Any ideas????

I think I would start with the switch housing on the right side. Check all the wiring to make sure nothing is loose and that there is no corrosion. It may be that the set switch is so worn that it will need to be replaced.

I would lead towards a code. If you have service manual it should tell you how to pull the code/codes for your model. I wou;d check for codes first before going into the wiring. tourbox

No codes showing. As for the "set switch", could all of the cruise control functions still be working if the switch was bad? My cruise works perfectly, it's just that the dang light blinks when going down the road with the cruise off. One thing I forgot to mention is that the light flickers as if there is a loose connection. It is not a steady blink. Could a loose or corroded connection make this happen or would it have to be a switch shorted etc. before the light could get power. It happens even with the cruise control switch in the off position. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

"OK I did the check on the diagnostics and this is what came up. 113 122 122 122 111 111 111 112 What is this telling me? I see that the 111 code is good(no codes,memory clear) 122 says the front or rear break was applied but it wasn't. 113 (cruise control switch off) and 112 is (throttle roll off) I got all this information and am not sure what it is telling me. The light still flickers (even sitting in my garage in neutral with the motor running) Again, everything works great but this light flickering thing is driving me crazier! Any advice or help would be appreciated. " wsw483 wrote above in another thread. I just copied it here to keep it in one thread. I think the 122 & 112 are just logged because the cruise was shut off that way sometime in the past and you do not have any problem codes. Can you shut down the cruise by turning the switch off? Probably since the green light is flickering and not steady. I'm thinking the switch is starting to short thru to the on position or your getting some stray voltage to that courtesy light from moisture or something. In any of those scenarios you would not throw a code-you can drive all day with the switch on and not use the cruise.

Flashing cruise control ring on display

Sometimes when I use my cruise control the ring that appears on the display, will keep flashing. It is intermittent, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I cannot find any relation with speed or weather or such. Any suggestion what may cause this.

For most the fix was replacing the cluster, even with a used cluster which might require programming. Some suspect it means tires aren’t all the same diameter; e.g., uneven wear, pressure. Sixto 05 E320 wagon 192K miles

Electrical Issue Flickering Dash Lights No cruise control or shift out of park

First of all I would like to say hello to everyone! I've owned my 2006 2500 camper van for two years and thankfully haven't needed any major advise up until now. I'm currently living in my van and thinking it's about to let me down.... Here are the symptoms in chronological order 1) Check engine light comes on 3 weeks ago 2) 2 weeks ago, when I turn the key to the on switch and let the glow plugs heat up, my dash lights flicker and the beeping is off and on. Once I turn the key, the ESP, Check Engine, Traction Control, Park Brake and ABS light come on. It does this intermittently, sometimes the start up lights do not flicker and it starts up as it normally should. Also, sometimes only the check engine light is on. The cruise control has also been cutting out intermittently in between start ups. 3) I've been avoiding driving out of fear that it's going to die on me so only when it's completely necessary. Starting it and driving it about 20-30km every 3-4 days. Last night when I went to start it the dashlights were really flickering, eventually I turned the key and it turn over. When I put my foot on the brake to shift gears it would either die or not let me shift out of park. I sat in amazement for a few moments thinking, alright looks like I'm completely screwed. After trying a few times, it eventually turned on and let me shift out of park. This morning I fired it up and the lights still flickered upon putting the key to the on position but it turned over and would let me shift gears. Unfortunately I am stuck in a remote place on Vancouver Island for another 3 weeks. It's clear the issue got a lot worse since the original check engine light came on but I kind of need to keep driving it for a few weeks and then find someone that actually knows Sprinters. Does anyone know a Sprinter GURU on the Island or Vancouver mainland? Specifically someone that can work on the electrical? I've been driving with an electrical short for a long time. Everything was fine until they replaced something last year (ECU I think from a recall) and ever since my tail lights haven't worked. I've researched this issue and most people are saying it could be brake light switch, corroded wires or bulbs in the tail/brake lights, or the light being out on the license plate. Thanks to everyone in advance for reading and hopefully giving me some insight.

Check and if necessary clean your battery and ground connections. The ground for the tail lights is on the top passenger side in the back, there’s one right next to the battery under the hood, one somewhere in the dash, the engine strap, and I think a couple more

How many miles? Sounds like possibly a bad ignition switch. Could also be grounds, the power distribution block (battery positive terminal). It could also be the notorious fuse block 1, though that doesn't usually cause IC symptoms. wefixscratchedglass What specific CANbus code do you have? If you have trans LHM, you need to see if the TCM is communicating over CAN, and do the same for the ABS/ESP module. From there you can narrow it down to CAN wires, or power supply issues to either module. Given that you cannot shift from park, that suggests a issue with the ESP/ABS module. ESP sends the brake pedal status to the other modules, without that the shifter won't unlock. It could also be a shifter communication issue, so scanning each module in turn is necessary.

If you have trans LHM, you need to see if the TCM is communicating over CAN, and do the same for the ABS/ESP module. From there you can narrow it down to CAN wires, or power supply issues to either module. Given that you cannot shift from park, that suggests a issue with the ESP/ABS module. ESP sends the brake pedal status to the other modules, without that the shifter won't unlock. It could also be a shifter communication issue, so scanning each module in turn is necessary. It screams "flaky battery" to me ... and with erratic power, you're going to get lots of red-herring codes appearing. Get a voltmeter (or 2) (or ScanGauge) and watch the +12v (on the socket on the dashboard? or on the battery) and see what the meter reports during the erratic behavior. IF you see the dash voltage fluctuating, then move the voltmeter to the battery and see if it's doing it too. If not: it's in the wiring between the battery and the Sprinter's electronics If it DOES also bounce the same amount at the battery, it could be a damaged battery. An all-to-common "Sprinter wiring" spot is the fuse block that's mounted under the steering column ... the fuse-holding springs can weaken, the plastic bars can shift around. For anyone that has had this issue of not shifting out of park once the engine is turned on.... It sounds like most people have had success starting the engine in neutral and shifting into drive from there. My question for those with this issue.... How long did you drive with your van like this? I live in my van and would rather not have it sit in a shop for a week while they try and solve the electrical so I'm going to try and make it "home" to my parents place which is about 1200 KM away. Also, have any of you had issues of it dying on the highway and not being able to start it? THanks all!!

The ESP, Traction and brake lights haven't been staying on like they had been, but it still dies occasionally on start up when I put my foot on the park brake to shift into gear. This clip just shows the symptoms of flickering dash lights upon putting the key to the on position, and the gas gauge flickering too. It starts fine, for now... Cruise control doesn't work when the ESP, traction and brake lights stay on after start up, otherwise it works. Is this a classic brake switch problem?

What is your system voltage when this happens? 13.8V is normal and anything outside 11.5-14.5V can cause odd behavior.

PROBLEM FIX So it looks like the culprit might have been a loose connection in my ignition switch. A good mechanic here in Edmonton easily diagnosed it by noticing the dashlights would come on when you give the igntion switch a good wiggle. If anyone is looking for a fair and knowledgable sprinter mechanic send me a message and I"ll pass along his phone number. He specializes in big rig diesels but did a fine job with the electrical on mine. Will keep everyone posted on some of the other issues which I hope will have resolved themself with the new ignition switch. I know there is still a short somewhere in the van, when I turn my A/C on it blows the fuze for the blower motor. I've removed the blower resistor because it gets insanely hot after about a minute of turning the vehicle on. So fingers crossed the big issues are solved. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions

Just wanted to report that I had the same symptoms as the video you posted - flickering dash lights or no dash lights at all, took multiple tries to start without the esp, abs, and traction lights on. Ive been dealing with this for over a year and initially I thought that wiggling the key helped, but lately, it hasn't been making any difference. I ended up replacing the ignition switch and it seems to be working like a champ. Only difficulty I had was removing the fuse box on the steering column to access the switch. The upper bolt holding the fuse box on was just spinning in place. After some research, it turns out this is common so I basically chipped the plastic around the bolt away and yanked the thing off. I fastened back on later with a couple big zippy ties.
