Talkeetna Things to Do

It can be hard to decide what to do first in Talkeetna , a small town midway between Anchorage and Denali National Park . Here's a start: Talkeetna is one of best places to view mighty Denali and is famous for its flightseeing . The Denali Experience flightseeing tour takes off from the Talkeetna airport and soars into the Alaska Range for an hour among some of the most beautiful and rugged mountain landscapes in the world. For an added thrill, add a glacier landing to your flight.

Talkeetna sits at the confluence of three rivers, the Susitna, Talkeetna, and Chulitna. They run like thoroughfares through the densely forested region, so traveling on them gives you access to some pretty remarkable places you wouldn't otherwise see. Choose the Talkeetna Jet Boat Devil's Canyon Tour to travel the silty Susitna River as it winds south and west into a tight gorge aptly named "Devil's Canyon." A shorter Wilderness Jet Boat Tour is also available.

Alaska's state sport is dog mushing, and Talkeetna offers an opportunity to learn more about the teams that take to the trails each winter. The Talkeetna Sled Dog Kennel Tour goes to a working sled dog kennel, complete with a lesson in harnessing and caring for these beloved canine athletes.

Looking for an escape into the forest? The guided Talkeetna Lakes Hike is a wonderful stroll around a quiet lakeside trail and the perfect respite from a busy day. Look for moose and migrating waterfowl and learn about the plants growing around this placid lake under the tutelage of an experienced naturalist guide. The lake area also provides excellent terrain for beginner to moderate mountain biking, with rentals available in downtown Talkeetna.

You could also take to the treetops on the Denali Zipline Talkeetna Tour and capture a breathtaking view of North America's highest peak on a clear day.

Talkeetna is accessible by the Alaska Railroad or by highway. One northbound and one southbound train serve the Talkeetna Depot daily. The Park Connection Motorcoach offers twice daily service into Talkeetna with stops at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge and downtown.

The Best Things To Do in Talkeetna

There are lots of fun things to do in Talkeetna all year round, here’s what I got up to during my time in Talkeetna in winter and summer…

It’s the place to go flightseeing over Denali from, it has great restaurants, attractive historic buildings, and a whole bunch of characters that live there. There are many reasons to visit the quirky frontier town of Talkeetna, Alaska, but the reason I originally wanted to visit wasn’t any of the above.

I wanted to visit Talkeetna, Alaska because they have a cat for a mayor. The current cat Mayor of Talkeetna is called Aurora, but when I first visited in 2015 it was Mayor Stubbs.

Aurora the Mayor at Nagley's Store

Apparently, when Sarah Palin was the mayor of the neighboring town of Wasilla, her and Stubbs used to rub shoulders at mayoral events. Wonder which one of them was the better mayor (my money is on Stubbs).

I loved the sound of this quirky little Alaskan town and I knew that I just had to go there.

Visit Nagley's Store to look for Mayor Denali, it's one of the best things to do in Talkeetna

Talkeetna, Alaska is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was originally inhabited by the Athabascan Indians before gold prospectors and railroad men started settling the area from the late 19th century through the beginning of the 20th century.

Talkeetna was established as a town in 1919 once it was linked by railway to Anchorage . These days it is popular with climbers that are aiming to summit Denali, and during late spring/early summer, they pretty much take over the town.

I ended up spending two nights in Talkeetna on my first summer visit and I loved my time there. I returned again in March 2024 for four nights as part of my Alaska Winter Itinerary and came away loving it even more.

Talkeetna, Alaska is the perfect little town to just wander around, but there are also so many fun outdoor activities. You will never get bored.

The Best Things To Do in Talkeetna

Sample the local cuisine.

One great rainy day activity is sampling local cuisine and all of my meals while I was in Talkeetna Alaska were well above average.

In summer, the Spinach Bread Airstream food truck parked in a permanent spot on the main street serves up massive hunks of grilled spinach and cheese bread and although it looked delicious, I went for their meal of the day which was a black bean dish with fluffy rice, fresh coriander, homemade salsa and crushed peanuts – so good.

Eat at Talkeetna Spinach Bread food truck for one of the best things to do in Talkeetna

My favorite meal in Talkeetna, Alaska was at the iconic Talkeetna Roadhouse where I breakfasted at a long communal table. It is kitschy as hell with walls covered in flags, photos, and signs but that’s why I loved it.

It was at the Talkeetna Roadhouse that I had one of the most unusual and delicious breakfasts ever – the super decadent Nick’s Way which consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon, hash brown potatoes, a buttery soft homemade biscuit, and reindeer sausage gravy – simply incredible and I didn’t need to eat again until dinner.

If you only have time for one meal in Talkeetna – make it at the Talkeetna Roadhouse! Unfortunately, the Talkeetna Roadhouse is closed for the foreseeable future.

I love cozy Conscious Coffee for its hot drinks, bagels, and crepes served amongst hundreds of books that are available for loan or sale, and Denali Brewpub which has an excellent menu of pub classics and daily specials, along with locally brewed beer.

Wander the Historic Downtown

There are a couple of historic cabins dotted in the back streets of Talkeetna that are set up to show what they would have looked like when the original owners who built them in the late 19th century/early 20th century lived there. One of them still has its original Sitka strawberry patch. I picked a few and they were delicious.

I visited most of the town’s points of interest that were inside to escape the cold and rain. I enjoyed browsing the many tasteful gift shops scattered throughout town.

Don’t miss Aurora Dora – Dora has some incredible Aurora prints that she took herself for sale here, Blue Moose for great Alaska gifts, Silverbear Sundries for natural products like lotions and soap, and Dancing Leaf Gallery which houses work by local artists.

Go Rafting or Tubing in Summer

I didn’t get a chance to go rafting or tubing but they are both popular excursions to do from Talkeetna and look really fun. You can even do an overnight rafting trip for a real adventure.

Rafting is one of the best things to do in Talkeetna

Discover Talkeetna’s History at the Talkeetna Historical Society Museum

My favorite attraction was the Talkeetna Historical Society Museum which is spread out over three historic buildings behind the main street of town.

Talkeetna Alaska Historical Society Museum

It was a higgledy-piggle of exhibitions crammed into every nook and cranny, lots of old photos and all kinds of randomness: exactly the way I like my local museums to be.

I learned about the homesteading act that brought a lot of people who wanted a better life up to Alaska from the Lower 48 and about the history of Talkeetna as a town.

One of the buildings housed an exhibit about Denali and I somehow perfectly timed my visit with a   detailed talk by a ranger about summiting the mountain. The exhibit also touched on the many people who have died trying to summit.

After learning more about climbing Denali and the danger in attempting it, I visited the Ranger Station to watch the film that all mountaineers have to watch before attempting a climb. The film went through the climb step by step which was very interesting.

Nagley's Store in Talkeetna

Visit the Talkeetna Cemetery

There is a quiet little cemetery tucked away near the airfield that has a memorial to all of the people who have died trying to summit Denali. There are a lot of names on there. When the weather is bad on Denali it can be more dangerous than Everest.

Meet the Mayor

I popped into Nagley’s Store and the adjoining West Rib Pub and Grill to look for Stubbs numerous times but unfortunately, I never did get to see him. I hope you have better luck seeing Mayor Aurora if you visit.

talkeetna winter tours

Update: I met her a couple of times on my recent winter visit to Talkeetna! She likes sleeping on the fur-lined sled above the stairs in Nagley’s Store so look for her there or ask at the store.

Go Flightseeing Over Denali

I saved the best for last. I did a flightseeing tour from Talkeetna that circled Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, and then landed on a glacier! Needless to say, it was a big highlight of my time in Talkeetna. You can read more about it here .

Landed on a glacier - part of a Denali Flightseeing Tour with Talkeetna Air Taxi

You can do flightseeing tours in Talkeetna in both summer and winter and it is so worth it!

Look Out For Denali

If you want to see Denali but don’t have the time or cash to splurge on a flightseeing tour, don’t worry because you can see it right from town, just head to the river trail at the end of the main street. The mountain is only fully uncovered around 30% of the time so if there is cloud cover on your first attempt, keep trying.

Denali view

Another great spot to see Denali is on the Alaska Railroad train if you are catching it from Fairbanks – you’ll see it just before pulling into Talkeetna, and at the overlook on the Talkeetna Spur Road, just south of the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge turn-off.

Hit the Hiking Trails Near Town

There are lots of hiking trails that you can reach either by walking from town or by a short drive. The Talkeetna River trail, the Railroad Bridge trail, and the trail system at Talkeeta Lakes are all easy options close to town.

Go on a Snowshoeing Guided Tour in Winter

While you could hire snowshoes from the Talkeetna Gear Shop and go snowshoeing yourself, I wanted to do a guided snowshoeing tour as it was my first time and I wasn’t sure where to go.

Snowshoeing in Talkeetna in Winter

We booked the three-hour snowshoeing tour with Alaska Nature Guides and it was both beautiful and informative. Our Naturalist guide, Bernard, took us on some of the Talkeetna River and Railroad Bridge trails and we even did some off-trail snowshoeing in thick snow which was fun but strenuous.

Bernard is super knowledgeable and I learned a lot about the flora and fauna of Alaska. We also stopped on the river for a hot drink and a delicious cookie.

Do a Snowmobiling and Dog Sledding Tour in Talkeetna in Winter

Another fun winter tour that we did was our combined snowmobiling and dog sledding tour with Alaska Wild Guides .

I have wanted to try driving a snowmobile and this tour was the perfect place to try for the first time. We had a great guide, Steven, who taught me how to drive it, Toby hopped on the back and we set off.

Snowmobiling during Talkeetna in winter

I quickly got the hang of it and followed Steven through forest paths and wide open marshland for the next hour and it was so fun! We even saw a couple of moose.

Next up we arrived at Battle Dawgs kennels and had hot drinks overlooking Denali in a cozy 40′ yurt while Chantel the dog trainer got the dogs ready. We then took a fun spin through the forest on the dog sled, taking turns as a passenger in the front and standing at the back.

Dogsledding in Talkeetna in Winter

Then it was time for more snowmobiling to finish off the tour. This was my favorite winter tour I did in Alaska and I highly recommend it!

See The Aurora

While Fairbanks is better known as an Aurora hot spot, we actually saw more impressive Aurora in Talkeetna and I recommend visiting both places for the best chance to see them.

Talkeetna has little light pollution so when they do come out here, you have a better chance to see a stronger, brighter display than Fairbanks as this is a city with a lot more light pollution.

Aurora hunting is one of the best things to do in Talkeetna

I took this on my phone with a 3-second exposure. I haven’t enhanced the color at all and I could see the green and the movement of the Aurora with my naked eye! Just incredible.

We were staying a 15-minute walk outside of town at Susitna River Lodging and after the Aurora tracker said they were going to be out, we walked the couple of minutes out to the road to clear the trees and were treated to a brilliant display with bright green, dancing curtains of lights.

Attend a Community Event

One of Talkeetna’s biggest strengths is its incredible community who fiercely love this little town and look out for each other. We found the people of Talkeetna the friendliest in Alaska.

To get a taste of this wonderful community, I recommend attending a community event while you’re there like markets, festivals, and performances. We happened to be there during the big event of winter, the Oosik Classic Ski Race in March and the town was pumping.

We went to see Roland Roberts Band at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar and I loved the cozy venue, the band, and the people watching. Check out future shows at The Hangar here .

Live Music in Talkeetna

I really fell for Talkeetna and there were so many reasons why I ended up loving that small frontier town, but I think my favorite thing about Talkeetna is the friendly and interesting community.

It truly is a special place and I have a feeling that Talkeetna hasn’t seen the last of me.

Have you been to Talkeetna Alaska? Would you go?

How To Plan Your Own Talkeetna Trip

Where to stay in talkeetna.

I stayed at the Talkeetna International Hostel when I visited Talkeetna in the summer but it is no longer open, unfortunately. On my recent visit, I stayed in one of the suites at Susitna River Lodging and I loved my stay here. It’s a 15-minute walk from town, right on the river, the suites are very spacious but cozy, and they are excellent value for money – especially for Alaska. They also have cozy cabins.

Susitna River Lodging

Other great cabin and lodge options include Denali Fireside Cabin & Suites which offers studios, suites, and cottages, and the iconic Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge , which is located on the edge of town but has a restaurant on-site and a free shuttle to town.

For vacation rentals, there are so many cool places to stay, and this is generally the most affordable option if you are traveling with friends or family. Here are the best vacation rentals in Talkeetna:

  • Bohemian Chic Yurt Near Downtown
  • Easy Street One Bedroom Bear Cabin
  • Quaint and Cozy Eastside Yurt
  • Cute Cabin and Tiny Home Close to Town
  • Modern Log Cabin With Sauna

Susitna River Lodging room

Getting to Talkeetna

If you are coming from Seward, Anchorage, or Denali National Park, and you don’t have a vehicle, you can catch the Park Connection Bus .

Alaska/Yukon Trails also travels between Anchorage in the South to Fairbanks in the North, and you can stop in Talkeetna if you are coming from either direction.

Another option is to take the train on the Alaska Railroad from Denali, Fairbanks, or Anchorage to Talkeetna. This is the only option, other than renting a car, to get to Talkeetna independently in winter. Check the winter train schedule because trains don’t run every day.

Fun Things To Do in Talkeetna

14 Comments on Fun Things To Do in Talkeetna in Winter and Summer

Supposedly…..the once wildly popular tv show “Northern Exposure” was based on the town on Talkeetna. It fits. There is so much warmth and quirkiness in that wonderful place. I love Talkeetna.

I didn’t know that but I am not surprised either, it is a very friendly little town.

We went to Alaska in 2005. Was the most wonderful trip I planned the trip a year in advance. Talkeetna was great saw Mayor Stubbs. Would love to go back but might be sad if it has changed a lot.

Hi Laurie, that’s so cool that you saw Mayor Stubbs! I don’t imagine he would still be around now as it was five years since I was there. I would love to return too. Where did you go?

Stubbs for President! I love the idea of a cat mayor. AND he’s got political experience unlike some current political options.

I did too, surely cats wouldn’t get corrupted like regular politicians too

That sounds like such a wonderful little place. I’ve wanted to go to Alaska for ages now. I should really have gone there when I was in North America this summer :/ Maybe next year! 🙂

It really is Zascha. I hope you make it there

So sorry you missed Stubbs! We stumbled upon him sleeping on one of the couches in one of the shops and I was able to get a few pictures of him. Loved Talkeetna!

I’m jealous! Would have loved to have seen him but loved Talkeetna anyway

We wasn’t too interested in us. He just kept on sleeping while I snapped a few pictures. I wrote a post about him http://wanderingdawgs.com/2013/10/19/stubbs-the-cat-mayor-of-talkeetna-alaska/

Cool I will take a look 🙂

Sounds wonderful! I’ve never understood the concept of ‘biscuits and gravy’ though – it always looks to me like someone threw up on the plate (apologies for that mental image!). I suppose it must taste better than it looks.

Haha it’s not a thing where I am from (New Zealand) and the gravy definitely doesn’t look like what we would call gravy but it was delicious all the same 🙂

Things to Do in Talkeetna Alaska Gateway to Denali National Park

March 17, 2021 1 Comment »

Is it possible to fall more in love with a place after visiting for a 3rd time?

Yes! This was my 3rd trip to the small community of Talkeetna Alaska, but my first visit in the winter. Talkeetna has always been one of my favorite small communities in Alaska . This once-popular Denali climbing hub has grown into a popular stop for people going between Fairbanks and Anchorage on the beautiful Parks Highway.

Slightly off the beaten path, you’ll need to take the spur road off the Parks Highway about 15 miles to where the spur road essentially ends. Here you’ll turn onto Main Street and be greeted by Talkeetna’s small-town charm, not to mention their welcome sign.

Tip: The Alaska Railroad also stops in Talkeetna on their Denali Star Line.

Talkeetna Alaska welcome sign

Three-block Main Street ends at the river one of the highlights of the area, and a place for great views of Denali National Park peaks. Along Main Street, you’ll find a few historic buildings, a few restaurants, some gift shops, climbing shops, and that’s it. It has an abundance of great bakeries (it seems like a requirement for a small town!), history, charm, and most importantly to me – outdoor adventures and things to do.

Table of Contents

Talkeetna is the Gateway to Denali National Park

Talkeetna lies 100 miles south of the entrance to Denali National Park and Preserve and it seems to be the place where it all starts. There’s a lot of backcountry between the park and Talkeetna, so it’s one of the last main stops before the park when coming from the south.

Denali view from Talkeetna

You can get some of the best views of Denali from various places around Talkeetna, and it just feels like it has a rich history with the park as you walk around the community. This is how the town started after all – it started as a climbing town and some locals humorously call it a climbing town with a drinking problem.

It is where all the Mt. Denali summits/expeditions begin, therefore I often consider it the gateway to the park. There’s even a park ranger station there just off of Main Street (more on that below).

Chasing Fall in Alaska: Where to go for Autumn colors from North to South

Best Time to Travel to Talkeetna Alaska

I have always loved this quirky little community, but I fell more in love with it in the winter when I felt like its true character shined through in the off-season. Talkeetna in the winter was bliss; the empty main street, the historic buildings without crowds, the piles and piles of snow, and the incredible views of Denali on a crisp winter day. Things have changed due to COVID-19 – but the Talkeetna locals were as welcoming as ever…in masks.

Talkeetna in winter

Sure – there might not have been as much open or to do, but it was just right for me; it felt real. No crowds in Nagley’s store, no waiting for restaurants, and ample parking was available. Groups of snowmobiles were parked outside of Denali Brewing Company and cross-country skies were planted in the snow drifts. It felt like what it should be, a sleepy Alaskan small town/community.

Learn why travel in shoulder season and off seasons are better for the world

The summer is lovely too, but you’ll definitely find it more crowded with visitors. And as each year goes on, it becomes more so. That honestly worries me as the town wasn’t meant to house that many seasonal people. They even had to start a special community tax to help fix the community sewer system for the growth in visitors.

The 2 times I’ve been there in the summer have been in late August or September – which is getting into shoulder season and less crowded too. It’s a beautiful time to be in Alaska in general as the fall colors are out and if you are lucky you may even catch the beginning of aurora season. The first time I ever saw the Northern Lights was in Talkeetna in August!

Go off-season or in shoulder season, when in theory your presence will have less of an impact on local communities. You’ll beat the crowds and enjoy shorter waits wherever you go. Prices also tend to drop in off-season, so this is a win-win.

Things to do Around Talkeetna Alaska At Any Time of the Year

As I mentioned before, I’ve been to Talkeetna 3 times; all of these Talkeetna things to do come from my personal experience. These are all places I’ve visited personally or tours I’ve taken. I feel like it’s important to provide travel advice based on personal experiences, not just a list of things anyone can write on the internet. So – know that this is all my personal opinions and experiences with these companies and feel free to contact me with any additional questions – I’m a real person who’s traveled there and I’m happy to help!

Talkeetna Museum

Talkeetna Historical Museum

This is a great place to start, this old building was the town’s schoolhouse. The Talkeetna Historical Society was founded in 1972 by residents concerned with protecting the original Talkeetna Schoolhouse and Talkeetna’s history.

They even have a free walking tour app that will lead you around to all of the historic buildings and teach you about the history! Get it for Android or iTunes . And for that, don’t you think they deserve a visit and a donation at the museum?!

Talkeetna Roadhouse

Another original building on Main Street is the Talkeetna Roadhouse which was established in 1917. Roadhouse history in Alaska is fascinating. Roadhouses were born of the gold rush and trapper culture in Alaska. They were a place where people could stay and get food; all spaced out about a day’s journey apart (an early 1900s journey apart!). They are a part of the early Alaskan culture and there are a few that still remain. The Talkeetna Roadhouse is one of the few remaining ones, and it’s also probably the best known.

Talkeetna Roadhouse

I’m not really sure how it became so well known; maybe it is because it was a hub for Denali climbers, or maybe it’s their incredible cinnamon rolls and bakery items. Whatever it is – it’s a gem in Talkeetna and not to be missed. The Roadhouse is really known for its family style and communal everything. Meaning that you just grab an empty chair at a table and sit with other people. That’s the beauty of a roadhouse – you meet other travelers, and hear their stories.

Discover all the things to do in Anchorage in Summer or Winter

It also still serves as a historical place to stay in town. On my recent winter trip to Talkeetna, I stayed there finally! It’s like a step back in time with communal tables and shared common areas and bathrooms. The sleeping rooms are simple but authentic, just like they used to be!

Stop in, grab one of their famous ginger molasses cookies, or other baked goods, and talk to fellow travelers!

Note: During COVID-19 , things operate a little differently at the Talkeetna Roadhouse, learn more.

Fairview Inn

Often considered the heart of the Historic District, and also a bit of a party bar. It was built in 1923 during prohibition, it has since added a bar and it is the place to go in Talkeetna for live music! I personally have finished a few nights with a drink at Fairview Inn Bar. I think I lost a few years of my life there – it’s sort of like an Alaskan frat house, but filled with all of the seasonal workers from the area and loads of fun.

Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station

This unique ranger station serves as the center of mountaineering operations. Climbers wishing to attempt Denali or other peaks in the Alaska Range must stop here first, for an orientation to the mountain and to acquire their climbing permit.

Even if you aren’t a climber, I suggest you stop there anyway – especially if you are an outdoor lover like me. Rangers are on hand to answer any questions about the park and there are always some great climbing exhibits to see. Plus, they have the current statistics on display, including how many climbers are on the mountain, how many have reached the summit, and how many climbers are now off the mountain. Adventure junkies like me always love to learn about stuff like this!

Hit the Trails in Talkeetna

There’s plenty of wilderness around Talkeetna. In the summer there are some lovely lake trails or walks along the river, and in the winter, you can go snowshoeing. In winter or summer, you can make the most of your trail time with a naturalist guide from Alaska Nature Guides . They’ll be able to teach you about wildlife, plants, and the native culture.

Talkeetna snowshoeing

I took a snowshoeing hike with Bernard from Alaska Nature Guides. The snow was deep in Talkeetna and perfect for snowshoeing outside of town. We simply walked to the end of Main Street and took off snowshoeing along the river! It doesn’t get much easier than that. We crossed over the railroad bridge which has a safe pedestrian (and snowmobile) crossing, and suddenly we were out in the middle of the forest.

It had been snowing all morning in Talkeetna and Bernard thankfully broke trail taking on all the really hard work through the new powder. I was in the back reaping the rewards of everyone else’s hard work. He thoughtfully pointed out the trees, and animal tracks, and tried to point out the Denali Peaks shrouded in low clouds. It was hard to imagine mountain ranges behind those gray clouds, but they were there…just being shy. I think because of the fact the mountains were hidden it made me pay even more attention to the details of the winter woods.

Learn insider tips for experiencing the Northern Lights in Fairbanks

Some might say that a forest full of willows and alders in the winter is boring and leafless – but I found myself noticing little details I had never really considered before. The colorful lichen, the texture of the snow on the bark of a tree, the appearance of the thick bark on a big old tree, and the colors of the buds on trees against the stark background of snow. It brought me closer to the landscape.

Talkeetna snowshoeing

A little hot chocolate and sweet snacks on the banks of the frozen river were perfect as the snow continued to fall. As we snowshoed, we kept our eyes and ears peeled for moose. I normally don’t want to encounter moose in the woods, however, I found myself completely at ease with it with Bernard at the helm.

Take to the Skies and Go Flightseeing in Denali National Park

Denali National Park and Preserve is over 6 million acres, and most people only get to see 15 miles of it. Denali Park Road is open for any vehicles to drive the first 15 miles, after that you have to ride a park bus further into the park. And even though you can get off that bus and then go anywhere you want – few people have the skills, proper equipment, and desire to do that.

The best way to really get to see the grandeur of the park and the Alaska Range is to go flightseeing. Most flightseeing is done out of the little town of Talkeetna Alaska. Bonus – you can even do it in summer or winter!

Alaska bush plane winter flightseeing

Plus, an Alaska bush plane experience is a real slice of local culture . I’m always in awe of the number of people who can fly and own bush planes in Alaska. My recent pilot, Chris, got his license to fly at 17 years old and was taught by his Grandpa. His Grandpa had a plane that he owned and would often fly it and land it on a glacier to go hiking in the park for the day and then fly back. Don’t worry Chris is now much older than 17, and he was a great pilot – great teaching job Grandpa!

Summer Flightseeing and Hiking

The first time I went to Talkeetna was in the summer and I flew with K2 Aviation. I was actually able to go and hike in an extremely remote section of Denali National Park – something very few people get to do if you aren’t a professional climber! A float plane flew from Talkeetna to Moraine Lake in the park located between Backside Glacier and the Ruth Glacier within the vast roadless area of Denali National Park. The area is only accessible by float-plane.

Talkeetna flightseeing

We landed on the lake, the pilot let us off with a guide and we proceeded to hike around for 2 hours and get incredible access to the park. The float plane returned and picked us up. This is one of the most incredible tours that K2 Aviation offers from Talkeetna in the summer! Learn more about the K2 flightseeing hiking tour here .

Winter Flightseeing

As we took off and flew towards the park I loved seeing all of the twisty snowmobile tracks in the snow all over the backcountry. It’s always incredible to see the braided rivers and lakes from the sky. I bet you didn’t know that Alaska is the land of 3,000,000 lakes!

We flew on a beautiful day that started cloudy and cleared to beautiful skies. The weather cleared for us just enough to have a successful (yet bumpy!) flightseeing trip with K2 Aviation. Tip – Bring some Dramamine if you are prone to motion sickness!

We took the Denali Grand Tour and had an incredible view of the Alaska Range in Denali National Park. Most people just think about Mt. Denali, but this park is so much more than that. One seldom gets to see the enormity of an entire mountain range, but the best way to do it is from above. Chris knew every peak and glacier as we curved through the mountains – so close I felt like I could reach out and touch them at times.

winter flightseeing talkeetna

How do you make an epic trip even better? In March when the days are a bit longer (they have 7 more minutes of light every day here!) K2 Aviation starts their flightseeing PLUS glacier landings! For us though – just being able to see this majestic range from above in February was enough.

Ride the Hurricane Turn Train

This unique AKRR flag stop train leaves daily out of Talkeetna, goes to scenic Hurricane Gulch, turns around, and returns to Talkeetna late in the day. It’s a local train with a few tourists – and that’s just one of the things that makes it so great. It was put in place for locals living off the grid to access remote cabins, hunting, and fishing in the wilderness.

talkeetna hurricane turn train

However, the Alaska Railroad offers it up to anyone who wants to ride this whistle-stop service as way to experience local life in Alaska. This is probably the most immersive local experience I’ve had in the whole state, and it’s something not to miss if you are looking for things to do in Talkeetna Alaska.

Find out why I think the Hurricane Turn train is the best Alaska train tour on the entire AKRR route!

hurricane turn whistle stop train

I rode the Hurricane Turn train in the late summer and was able to really enjoy the fall colors and wildlife. Wildlife viewing is prime since this is probably the only train you’ll ride that stops, and even backs up, for wildlife viewing!

I’ve ridden the Hurricane Turn train twice and each time it’s different; different locals, different stops, and different people to meet on the train. I even flagged it down myself once when I got off for a picnic in the wilderness and then flagged it down to pick me up on its way back to Talkeetna! It normally only runs as a turn-around train in the summer, you can check the schedule here .

Here’s how you can plan a perfect Hurricane Turn Journey !

Talkeetna Jet Boat Adventures

The Native Alaskans named Talkeetna for its essential landmark – the rivers. The word Talkeetna means “where the rivers meet.” Three rivers meet in Talkeetna and are woven into the town’s history and fabric. One of the best things to do in the summer is to get on the rivers and explore this unique landscape of braided rivers. Plus, to make it more exciting, why not do that by jet boat?

Talkeetna rivers

I did this trip with the Mahays River Boat Tour as a part of the Hurricane Turn Train journey called the River, Rails, and Trails Tour . I rode the train for a way and got a taste of its unique offering, and then got off in the old settlement of Curry. After learning about the historical significance of this abandoned settlement we proceeded to take a jetboat back to Talkeetna! This was a really different way to get your ‘boots on the ground’ in the wilderness!

jet boat tour talkeetna

These river tours are narrated by Coast Guard licensed captains and trained naturalists, so you will learn a lot about the region. After hiking for a bit, we got to our jetboat, strapped on our life vests, and took off downriver. If you have a lucky clear sky day, you’ll get great views of Denali too! It felt as if I were flying or hovering just above the river – the ride is exhilarating! It drops you off right at the end of Main Street and you can walk directly to the Denali Brewing Company for a beer!

Go Meet the Mayor of Talkeetna

You are on vacation – why am I telling you to bring politics into your vacation? Fear not – these are fun politics…yes, there is such a thing! The town of Talkeetna Alaska elected a cat named Stubbs for their mayor.

Truth be known – even though Talkeetna has all of these wonderful things to do, this is probably the main reason why I have such a deep love and fascination with Talkeetna…a cat for mayor!

He was the mayor for 20 years and sadly recently passed at 20 years old! Stubbs, who got his name from his short tail, had an ‘office’ in the Nagley General Store. I went on numerous occasions to try to visit him but had no luck as he was always ‘in meetings’.

Stubbs Talkeetna Mayor

When Stubbs passed away – RIP my fluffy friend – Talkeetna put in place a new mayor, his ‘brother’ Denali. On my most recent trip to Talkeetna in 2021, I again tried to stop by and see the new mayor in his office at Nagley’s. The guy behind the counter said that he was on vacation. Even a cat has to escape winter I guess. However, he introduced me to Denali’s sister Aurora.

Nagleys Store

This first lady was a purr and attention monster. Quite frankly – I think she should be Mayor – she’s definitely social and isn’t afraid of the winter. Regardless – stop in at Nagley’s and try to get a meeting with the Mayor, and definitely ask for a picture with the First Lady, Aurora – she’ll be happy to oblige.

You can learn more about Mayor Stubb’s 20 years in office here .

Where to Eat in Talkeetna

After visiting 4 times, I do have some favorite places to eat in Talkeetna. However be patient, it’s a small town with only a few restaurants – be prepared to wait. Or get your food to go and eat by the river! In the winter though, I didn’t have to wait at all…the beauty of going in the winter!

NOTE: During COVID-19, you will want to check to see if these places are still open. I know for sure that the Roadhouse is only open to the people staying there. Mountain High Pizza and Flying Squirrel are only open for take-out as of Feb 2021.

The Roadhouse Bakery

Be still my heart – pies, cinnamon rolls, butter molasses cookies. Plus – for those doing day trips or riding the Hurricane Turn train you can also pre-order delicious sandwiches and treats.

Mountain High Pizza

They have so many unique pizzas to choose from like Reindeer pizza, Buffalo chicken pizza, and Gyro pie. Be daring and try something different! Their crust is crunchy, golden perfection!

Flying Squirrel Bakery and Cafe

Located a bit out of town on Spur Road, this is another bakery heaven. Get fresh bread there, treats, or delicious paninis and salads!

Denali Brewing Company

It’s not only about great craft beer, but Denali Brewing Company also produces mead, cider, and spirits. Their brewery and tap room is on Spur Road outside of the town and close to the Parks Highway. However, they also have a restaurant and bar on Main Street that serves up delicious burgers and other bar food creations!

Where to Stay in Talkeetna

The Roadhouse is not only a café – but it’s also a hotel still modeled after a historic Roadhouse and definitely worth checking out ( Read reviews of Roadhouse Hotel ).

If you are looking for something a bit more substantial, then check out Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge – a large lodge just outside of town that runs a regular shuttle into town. ( Read Reviews of Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge )

Or a nice in-between choice is the Chinook Wind Cabins; individual lodging complete with kitchens. ( Read Reviews of Chinook Wind Cabins )

Note – I’ve stayed in all of these places, and recommend them all depending on what you are looking for.

Talkeetna Alaska may be small, but it deserves more than a day there. Only when you stay for a few days do you experience the real character of this village by the three rivers governed by a cat. Plus, you’ll have more opportunities to meet the mayor…and the locals! After all, it’s the locals there that have made this town the gem that it is.

I was a guest of Travel Alaska for all of my trips to Talkeetna.  However all opinions expressed here are my own.

What a lovely description of Talkeetna you wove. Thank you for the wonderful article. Having lived in Talkeetna for close to 40 years you gave me a much needed taste of home. I currently live on Long Island with my son Judah Mahay and his family , caring for my two grandchildren. My oldest son Israel now owns the business the boys father and I started. Keep up the great writing. PS I am currently in the editing stage of my Memoir of when I first came to Talkeetna and lived up the tracks

Add the vibrant, compact Luscious Basket Tangeglow lantana to your container garden mix

Luscious Basket Tangeglow lantana is a fairly new, compact variety that has racked up impressive awards and is proving to be an ideal component plant in mixed containers.

After seeing the flowers at the Young’s Plant Farm Annual Garden Tour in Auburn, Alabama, I felt a sense of desperation to get my hands on the Luscious Basket Tangeglow lantana. I don’t always think about lantana being a component plant in mixed-container designs, but they had several that were simply dazzling.

Luscious Basket Tangeglow is a fairly new lantana, and its name gives reference to its compact nature of 12 to 26 inches in height and a spread of 12 to 24 inches. The differences in height and width are attributed to the length of the growing season.

Luscious Basket Tangeglow has done great in university trials winning Perfect Score at University of Minnesota, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and University of Tennessee. Then it took home Directors Select at Penn State and a bunch of Top Performer awards.

The Garden Guy: Mangave from Rio Grande Valley makes beautiful succulents for Georgia landscapes

The Luscious Basket Tangeglow offers flowers that might at first seem like all of the other lantanas in the market with orange and yellow blossoms, but it is the third color ― peach ― that makes it unique and opens the door to such artistic recipes as those seen at the Young’s Plant Farm Annual Garden Tour .

I think my favorite recipe was the Never Lonely. I can tell from my Facebook fans this was a hit according to their responses. It features Supertunia Bermuda Beach, Superbells Yellow calibrachoa and of course the star of this column the Luscious Basket Tangeglow lantana. The name Never Lonely would certainly seem appropriate for a couple of reasons: Pollinators would be ever present and, of course, friends and neighbors would always be around gawking and gasping at its beauty.

The next recipe that brought out my camera was Golden Gala. It featured Goldilocks Rocks bidens, cheerful golden daisy-like flowers. Then there was this year’s new Superbells Double Redstone calibrachoa with red petals and gold margins and of course our star Luscious Basket Tangeglow lantana.

The color partnership of another favorite took my breath away. Oddly, it was there without a name. The tag simply read, "Southern Combo Number 15." When I posted it to my Facebook page more than a couple asked about a particular partner.

Southern Combo Number 15 featured Superbells Cherry Red calibrachoa. Son James has grown this one on more than once, but old Dad now has it on the to-do list. The Cherry Red with the Luscious Basket Tangeglow was simply dreamy. You could look at it all day.

Then, there was the third partner that caused a stir within my Facebook world. It was Mezoo Trailing Red, Livingstone Daisy. It was known botanically as Dorotheanthus bellidiformis but looks to now be Aptenia cordifolia . It is the lush succulent variegated foliage that tugs at our heartstrings but you may catch sight of a red daisy-like flower. The three together make one creative combination.

Luscious Basket Tangeglow lantana is rated zone 9 and warmer as perennial and will be worth every penny as an annual. Sunlight and well drained soil are the prerequisites. The Garden Guy has been getting a spring return on all of the other Luscious varieties in zone 8 Georgia and hopefully, this will be the same with Luscious Basket Tangeglow.

Canadian Nick Taylor ready for full-circle moment at Paris Games

Olympic Golf

Canadian goes from carrying the Olympic torch as a young amateur to walking the fairways as a 2024 Olympian

Change Text Size

In 2010 when the Winter Olympics came to Vancouver, Nick Taylor – after ascending to the No. 1-ranked amateur in the world – was nominated by someone from his hometown to carry the Olympic torch. He accepted, ran his 200 metres (just over 650 feet) and then passed the flame on to the next person.

Taylor’s hometown of Abbotsford, British Columbia, is about 90 minutes from Vancouver. It was a fun moment for the youngster, who had just barely started his golfing life.

Nick Taylor carrying the Olympic torch during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. (Courtesy Taylor family)

Almost a decade and a half later, however, Taylor is an Olympian himself.

The 36-year-old appropriately calls it a “full circle” moment.

“I was a very, very small part of the Winter Olympics in Canada, and now I get to represent Canada in the Summer Olympics – it’s pretty neat,” Taylor said.

Conners finished in a three-way tie for ninth recently at Pinehurst No. 2 and earned just enough (like, just enough) points to bypass Adam Hadwin in the OWGR. When it was all calculated Monday morning, Hadwin ended up No. 38 to Conners’ No. 37.

“I’ve been working really hard to earn a spot on the team,” Conners said. “Certainly, it came down to the wire.

“It’s been highly competitive for the spots we’re fighting for. I’m thrilled to be going there alongside Nick. Looking forward to teeing it up with him and getting a couple of medals for Canada.”

“Everybody was playing great golf and I feel like our depth is so good that it was going to be really difficult to get one of those two spots,” added Taylor, who missed the cut at the U.S. Open and was left waiting on his fate.

Taylor Pendrith came closest to giving Taylor a run for his money, notching his best career result at a major championship with a T16 at the U.S. Open. But Pendrith had an outside shot to also jump into Olympic consideration if he had moved into the top three at Pinehurst, or thereabouts.

“I was fighting to contend in the U.S. Open first and foremost last week,” said Conners, whose T9 was his best result at the U.S. Open after five straight missed cuts. “But it’s definitely a relief to know that the result was good enough (to earn a spot on the Olympic team).”

Emily Phoenix, who is Golf Canada’s high-performance director and the team lead for the Olympics, said the 2024 Summer Games could be much different than Tokyo with how well the Canadian men are playing heading into the summertime.

“Both Nick and Corey are ranked inside the top 40 in the world right now on the OWGR and I think that’s huge,” Phoenix said. “Both have also won tournaments in the past year or so, and I think from a team standpoint, we’re looking really strong.”

Last Olympics, Conners earned a spot alongside Mackenzie Hughes for the Tokyo Games and finished just two shots out of a playoff for a bronze medal. This generation of Canadians on the PGA TOUR have won more frequently than any other in history.

Taylor has been Canada’s highest-ranked male golfer for most of 2024, following his win at the WM Phoenix Open earlier this season.

“It’s been something on the top of my goal list since (golf in the Olympics) came back and, really, since Tokyo,” Taylor said of making the Olympic team. “To really have a nice year and a half, two years of steady play and some really nice results put me in a good position. The competitive nature in me was vying for one of those two spots.

“From Adam Svensson to (Mackenzie Hughes) to Pendrith to Hadwin and Corey and I – it was neck and neck for the last two spots.”

IGF Executive Director Antony Scanlon on Golf at the Olympics | TOTT

Although this will be Conners’ second Olympics appearance, it will be his first under “normal” circumstances as the Tokyo Games featured strict policies related to the COVID-19 pandemic. So, both Conners and Taylor – as a first-time Olympian – are looking forward to the unique opportunity the week will afford.

“Last time, we were rather restricted on what we could do, so getting able to experience things in the village and watch some other sports and interact with other athletes I missed out on before – that was a big motivator for me, to get the full Olympic experience this time around,” Conners said.

Taylor said his plan is to be there for Opening Ceremony, experience the athlete’s village and hopefully see some other events before his golfing week begins and he gets into competition mode.

“I’d love to experience it all because it’ll be an experience unlike any other,” Taylor said. “For me, currently at least, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Orlando Airboat Rides

One of the things Florida is most known for is its famous airboat tours. Sign up for this fun adventure whether you’re in Fort Lauderdale or Miami, within Everglades National Park, or Orlando on Shingle Creek, on the headwaters of the Florida Everglades.

You won’t soon forget an exciting airboat ride when you visit the Orlando area, with a chance to see Bald Eagles and other endemic tropical birds, alligators, and crocodiles (maybe even a baby alligator).

Airboat rides are particularly popular amongst nature lovers. These special boats allow you to glide on the unique marshes and swampland of the Central Florida area. We thoroughly enjoyed our Florida airboat experience.

Sign up for a 90-minute fun and educational Orlando airboat tour to encounter the real Florida with experienced captains. Alternatively, secure your spot for a 1-hour sunset airboat tour and hope for one of Florida’s famous colorful sunsets.

Most airboat tours take place rain or shine. Just in case, we recommend traveling to Florida with a poncho or thin raincoat of some sort. Be sure to check in for your tour at least 30 minutes before the experience.

Orlando Boat Tour on an Airboat with Transportation

This tour includes pick up and drop off in Central Florida (including designated Disney World and Universal hotels), a BBQ lunch, a printed photo, and admission to their animal rescue Wildlife Park, where you can see birds, big cats, and reptiles.

The entire experience – from transportation to the boat ride – lasts around 7 hours, including the drive to and from the Everglades area. The Florida Everglades are approximately 45 minutes to an hour's drive each way from Orlando. Choose from a 30-minute or 60-minute airboat ride when you book your experience .

Orlando Sailing Tours

How about enjoying Orlando’s lakes with wind power? Sailing tours are the perfect way to glide on the water. And a sunset sail is incredibly romantic, to boot!

Private Morning Sail

Set sail on a 2-hour private sailing tour, starting at 10:00 am. Adventure awaits on Lake Fairview for up to four guests.

This area is just north of College Park near downtown Orlando and 15 minutes from Orlando’s Lieu Gardens. Don’t forget to bring towels if you want, though water is provided (and lakes are calm anyway, so you shouldn’t really get wet!).

Advanced reservations are required.

Private Lake Sunset Sail

Sail on Lake Fairview, approximately 10 minutes from downtown Orlando, 30-35 minutes from the Disney theme parks (including the Disney Springs area), and 25 minutes from Universal.

This 2-hour private Orlando boat tour can fit up to four people, and they allow you to bring your own snacks and beverages onboard. We recommend bringing a bottle of wine or champagne!

We recommend bringing along a wine tumbler set for your sailboat adventure!

Kayaking Tours

Connect with nature from the comfort of a kayak and get in some exercise too. Orlando boat tour options for kayaking are plentiful.

Kayak with Manatees

Head 45 minutes north of Orlando for your chance to kayak with manatees! These cute and friendly mammals are famous in the Sunshine State, where they come to enjoy the warm water for the winter.

Whether you’re a novice kayaking trying it for the first time, or an experienced pro, this tour is for you if you want to see a plethora of wildlife.

Check out this popular tour with 5-star reviews

Glass Bottom Boat Kayak Tours

If you want to see the fish below the water’s surface without snorkeling, sign up for a glass-bottom kayak tour. See through the bottom of the boat on this Orlando boat tour and have the chance to view the colorful fish and marine plant life beneath you.

Try a Rock Springs guided kayak eco-tour as you glide on the crystal-clear water for two hours. You’ll learn about the local ecosystem, stop for photos, and have the opportunity to swim in the springs. Opt to jump into the water from a rope swing for a thrill during this adventure.

You can also opt for a sunset tour in a glass-bottom kayak . Paddle through the Winter Park Chain of Lakes and canals in a peaceful setting. Your knowledgeable guide will point out interesting nature homes along the way and share some history of the area. You’ll also be able to stop for photos where you like!

Winter Park Evening Clear Kayak Glow in the Dark Tour

If you want to add a fun element to your kayaking adventure, sign up for a Winter Park kayak tour at night with a glow-in-the-dark kayak. The boats are illuminated with nighttime lighting!

They will surely be a good photo opp and fun outing as the lights make the water beneath you glow.

Another great option is this Neon Night Glow Paddleboard or Clear Kayak experience on Lake Ivanhoe.

This unique boat tour allows you to see Orlando’s skyline at night as you paddle along with the help of your guides, the moonlight, and the colorful lights beneath your kayak or paddleboard.

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour

One of our favorite Orlando boat tours is in Winter Park. It was established in the 1930s, decades before Walt Disney World opened in Lake Buena Vista.

This pontoon boat tour starts near the well-known Park Avenue area. Set out on your scenic cruise from Lake Osceola to the Winter Park Chain of Lakes as your guide takes you through the manmade canals.

Sail past stunning homes in Winter Park, where you will have breathtaking views of the opulent private homes in the area (which is one of the reasons we enjoy the boat tour).

You will have a chance to see wonderful some of Florida’s beautiful birds, like Blue Herons and large cranes, as you travel on several lakes.

Each boat holds a maximum of 18 passengers. Be sure to bring cash or a check to buy your tickets because credit cards are not accepted. We advise purchasing tickets in the morning on weekends, even if you plan on going later in the day. It’s a very popular tour, and tickets often sell out quickly.

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour is closed on Christmas Day. Otherwise, tours leave daily on the hour, starting at 10:00 am. The last tour is at 4:00 pm.

Day Trip Boat Tours from Orlando

While the Orlando boat tours listed above are within 30 minutes, on average, from Orlando, it’s worth mentioning there are more boat tour options nearby within a 2-hour drive. Here are some additional Central Florida boat tour options.

Mount Dora Lake Tours

One of our favorite destinations from Central Florida is 45 minutes north: the quaint town of Mount Dora . There’s so much to see and do there in the afternoon or morning; a boat tour is the best way to extend your trip to a whole day.

Take a 2-hour pontoon boat tour with a departure point at the historic hotel, the Lakeside Inn. Enjoy your leisurely cruise around Lake Dora and The Harris Chain of Lakes, including the famed Dora Canal.

The all-weather 25’ boats can cruise rain or shine thanks to their retractable clear covers for the sides of the boat. Choose from one of two daytime tours, or their third option to cruise during sunset.

Clearwater Beach with Dolphin Encounter Cruise

This 12-hour full-day tour begins with pick-up at 7:30 am. You’ll head west of Orlando to the popular Florida destination (Clearwater Beach), where you will take a cruise to encounter bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat.

While this means that you aren’t guaranteed to spot dolphins, your tour guide will do his or her very best to find them. You may see these beautiful mammals up close by the boat or further in the distance if they appear in the ocean. Part of the fun is the anticipation.

A one-hour dolphin tour boat ride is sandwiched between hours of free time on a Gulf Coast beach. For only $10 more, you can purchase a wristband for the boat ride that allows you to have unlimited beer, wine, and vodka punch.

Pickup and drop off are included at one of three major locations of your choice (Disney areas included). This means that all you have to do is sign up for the tour and be at that location for pick-up time.

Choose from the three pick-up locations listed below:

  • Walt Disney World area, on Epcot Resorts Blvd. (northern area of the parks)
  • Walt Disney World area, at Maingate Lakeside Resort in Kissimmee (area of the Disney World theme parks that is further south)
  • International Drive (close to Universal) at Senor Frogs

Clear Canoe Boat Tour Near Orlando at Silver Springs

This clear canoe boat tour is approximately halfway between Orlando and Gainesville at Silver Springs. The drive is approximately an hour and 45 minutes from downtown Orlando.

You’ll do a self-guided tour after the kayak company representative meets you and gives you a laminated map and some brief instructions. Paddle near Cypress Trees and see turtles, ducks, birds, and a chance to see manatees during the winter season, when they swim to Florida’s warm waters.

Dan and I often like to explore an area freely, on our own. Maybe you’re the same way! If so, this is a great tour for you in the Orlando area, as long as you can rent a car to get to the meeting point or take a taxi/Uber or Lyft there.

Orlando Boat Tours at Walt Disney World

Did you know that you can rent motorized boats at Disney World? It’s one of the best things to do at Walt Disney World, besides the parks.

Rent a Sun Tracker® Pontoon boat by the half-hour for up to 10 people. You can also opt to kayak or canoe from Fort Wilderness by the hour.

One of the most singular boat tours in Orlando, or perhaps anywhere, is an Amphicar boat tour. Be a passenger and the envy of all onlookers in a cool convertible car that drives right into the water. This experience is available at Disney Springs restaurant, The Boathouse.

Lastly, you can book a specialty cruise to see the fireworks. You don’t even have to be a hotel guest to do so! Snacks and soft drinks are included in a memorable cruise on a 25’ boat.

You can also request for a festive banner and/or balloons to be set up on the boat, which is included in the cost (request at the time of booking). It’s a great thing to do for you and your partner or up to 10 guests total, whether a proposal, anniversary treat, or family reunion.

What to Bring for Orlando Boat Tours

Florida's heat can be brutal, depending on the time of year. No matter the month, you definitely need to protect your skin from the sun. The sun in FL is strong, year-round.

Be sure to pack the following if you’ll be on the water in sunny Florida:

  • Refillable water bottle (the ice will stay intact for hours in the MiiR bottle, our favorite insulated wide-mouth bottle)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • SPF lip balm
  • Eco-friendly bathing suit
  • Rash guard

Conclusion for Best Orlando Boat Tours

Whether you want to captain a boat yourself, row your way through Florida’s waters in a kayak, see gators on an educational airboat ride, or go on a romantic sailboat cruise around one of Central Florida’s lakes, an Orlando boat is a wonderful Florida activity.

It will connect you with nature, get you out in fresh air, and allow your body to absorb vitamin D in the Florida sunshine. Sign up for an Orlando boat tour and explore this southern state in a unique and adventurous way.
