Day 3: Pergamum, Thyatira & Izmir

7 churches of revelation tour turkey

Our first visit of the day is Pergamum. The church of Pergamum was praised for its forbearance; (Rev. 2:12-17) it was here that the first Christians were executed by Rome. We'll visit the fabled Acropolis, pass through the Royal Gates, view the foundations of the Altar of Zeus and visit the ruins of the library (which once held 200,000 volumes). Next we travel east to Thyatira viewing the ancient roadway and period columns. Thyatira was once a busy trading center and famous as a "seller of purple," the most favored of the Seven Churches. We continue south to Izmir, which is the third largest city in Turkey and a long time center for Jews and Christians. In Paul's day, Izmir was known as Smyrna and was another of the Seven Churches (Rev. 2:8-11). Our lodging this evening will be in Izmir.

Day 4: Sardis, Philadelphia, Pamukkale

7 churches of revelation tour turkey

Departing our Hotel in Izmir, we'll see Polycarp's Church and visit the ancient roman agora. Then, we travel to Sardis, which was berated by John for its facade of strength when, in reality, it was weak (Rev. 3:1-6). Here coins were minted and the dyeing of wool originated. We'll visit the gymnasium and synagogue. Our next stop is nearby Philadelphia from where we are challenged to “hold fast” and look forward to the coming of the "new Jerusalem" (Rev. 3:7-13) in the Book of Revelation. Not much is left of the city except for the ancient wall and the remains of a Byzantine basilica in the modern city of Alasehir. Our lodging this evening will be in a lovely spa hotel in Pamukkale.

Day 5: Hierapolis, Laodicea & Colossae

7 churches of revelation tour turkey

Hierapolis, meaning "Sacred City," was an ancient center for pagan cults until it was transformed into a Christian center in the first century. According to tradition, the Apostle Philip lived and was martyred in Hierapolis. It was likely the hot springs of Hierapolis (in contrast to the cold mountain springs near Colossae) that combined to bring application to the "lukewarm" Laodiceans (Rev 3:14-22). This connection between the cities lies behind Paul’s reference to Hierapolis and Laodicea in his epistle to the Colossians (Col 4:13). Laodicea contains many acres of ruins to visit including a stadium and remnants of a sophisticated water system. Nearby Colossae is well-known throughout Christian circles as the receiver of Paul's letter to the Colossians. Today, the town has fallen into obscurity and nothing remains. We spend the remainder of the day traveling through the Turkish countryside arriving in the port city of Kusadasi where we spend two nights. The day will not be complete without a visit to a local Turkish Rug cooperative.

Day 6: Ephesus

7 churches of revelation tour turkey

We travel to the nearby town of Selcuk for a visit of ancient Ephesus. Ephesus was once a thriving port town of 250,000 people. Today you can still see the spectacular excavations of the major streets in this ancient city. We view the Library, Agora, theatre, colorful mosaics in the aristocratic Terrace Houses, and a panoramic outlook of the surrounding ancient port area (including a wealth of church history and cultural insight). Then we continue with a visit to the Basilica Church of St. John, which houses an immersion baptismal and is believed to be resting place of John. From here we have an excellent overview of the Ephesus harbor, the Mosque of Jesus, and see the site of the Temple of Artemis, which is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Day 7: Depart for Home

This morning we transfer to the Izmir airport for our flight back to the USA.

As you explore the ancient ruins, you’ll walk in the footsteps of civilizations that have left their mark on this vibrant city, including the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines. Thyatira, known today as Akhisar, was renowned for its production of purple dye and textiles, and it played a crucial role in the trade networks of the ancient world. As you explore this historical site, you’ll gain a profound understanding of the early Christian community’s struggles and their commitment to preserving their faith.

From Thyatira, your journey continues to Sardis , a city home to one of the Seven Churches referred to in the Bible as “ The Dead Church ” (Rev 3:1-6) . Finally, you’ll settle in for the night in Pamukkale, having embarked on a profound pilgrimage through history, faith, and the biblical references associated with each of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor.

Day 6 Laodicea – Ephesus – House of Virgin Mary

Begin the day with a visit to Hierapolis , an ancient city renowned for its rich history and cultural significance. Hierapolis, located near the modern town of Pamukkale, was known in antiquity for its therapeutic hot springs and healing centers, drawing visitors seeking physical and spiritual rejuvenation. The city’s historical context is deeply intertwined with its well-preserved Roman and Hellenistic architecture, which offers a glimpse into the ancient world’s appreciation for health and wellness. The archaeological site of Hierapolis is also home to a magnificent theater, burial sites, and the enigmatic Plutonium, a cave considered an entrance to the underworld, adding a layer of mysticism to the city’s cultural heritage.

After exploring Hierapolis, head to Laodicea , a city mentioned in the Bible as “ The Lukewarm Church ” (Rev 3:14-22) in the Book of Revelation. Laodicea, known today as Laodikeia, was an important ancient city known for its wealth and prosperity, particularly its textile industry and black wool garments. The biblical reference highlights the congregation’s spiritual lukewarmness and the need for renewed enthusiasm in their faith. As you visit the archaeological remains of Laodicea, you’ll delve into the historical and spiritual context of the early Christian community, experiencing firsthand the lessons conveyed in the sacred text.

Your journey then continues to Ephesus , known in the Bible as “ The Loveless Church ” (Rev 2:1-7) , one of the most renowned ancient cities in the world. Seven Churches of Revelation in Turkey

The Seven Churches of Revelation are ancient churches that St John wrote about in the Bible. Each church received a letter calling them to repent for their sins and correct their current course. When the letters to the churches were sent, there were active Christian communities in each of the towns. Today, though some remnants of these ancient cities and their churches remain, others have merged with the modern Turkish cities that now dot the landscape. According to legend, the 7 churches were all on a well-worn trade route, each church received a specific message, to be delivered to the congregation. The first church was located at Ephesus, the first stop along the trade route, followed by Smyrna, now Izmir, then the great city of Pergamon, then Thyatira, wealthy Sardis, Philadelphia and finally Laodicea, near modern-day Denizli.

The first church is in Ephesus, where St John lived. Because Ephesus was an important Roman city, the Church congregation here is believed to have been quite strong, with Christianity eventually becoming the city’s chief religion. Today, visitors can enjoy taking in the sites of the Roman city and key sites of Christian history. Mary’s house and the tomb of St. John are key sites of interest, St Mary is believed to have lived out her days here before being buried in the Church of Mary. Ephesus was the prominent commercial and cultural center of Asia. Christ’s letter to the Ephesian church praises the congregation for its “deeds…hard work…and perseverance,” and for its rejection of false apostles (Revelation 2:2-3).

2. Smyrna – Izmir

Smyrna in ancient times was a very wealthy and powerful city, indeed it vied with Ephesus and Pergamon for influence in the region. Today, Smyrna is located within modern-day Izmir, a city that has almost continuously been inhabited for centuries. The ancient city of Smyrna was largely absorbed into the city and, as such, there are remnants of ancient life throughout. The most important historical structure is the Agora, one of the best-preserved structures of ancient Ionia. Christianity in Smyrna is thought to have developed out of the large Jewish population that used to live in the area, as people defected from Judaism and were baptised in the Christian faith. Smyrna was home to a large Jewish community hostile to Christians. The Bible notes that slanderous accusations by Jews against Christians had led to Christian persecution by Roman authorities (Acts 14:2, 19: Acts 17:13).

3. Pergamon

Pergamon is one of Turkey’s most interesting and visited ancient sites. Dating as far back as the Archaic Period, the surviving structures include the Theatre, the Temples of Athena and Dionysus and the Gymnasium. Pergamon was a large city, significant in both political and commercial arenas, citizens would have enjoyed full, busy lives. Christianity in Pergamon was at odds with the city’s strong belief and history of worship of Pagan Gods. This clash of the Christian and the Pagan is something that the letter to the Church addressed, praising those who held fast in their Christian faith and admonishing those who persisted in the worship of pagan Gods. The city of Pergamum was renowned for its pagan practices. The letter to the church there lauds the congregation for upholding its faith despite the city’s pervasive pagan influences (Revelation 2:13). The letter then addresses the church’s sin by denouncing some of its members for following false teachings that brought about religious and moral compromise (Revelation 2:14-15).

4. Thyateira – Akhisar

The fourth Church, ancient Thyatira now lies within Akhisar. Once a city famed for bronze work and weaving, this modern city is now one of Turkey’s largest tobacco and olive oil growing regions. The ancient church featured in the book of revelations may be found in modern Akhisar’s Ulu Cami (Great Mosque). The building is a former Byzantine church that was converted following the Ottoman conquest of the region. The Church of Thyatira was told to persist in their beliefs, despite the lack of a strong church in the city. Today there are few suggestions that Christianity once thrived in the region. Thyatira was a wealthy commercial city. Jesus’ letter to Thyatira praises the church for having grown in faith and service (Revelation 2:19). The church’s downfall was its devotion to a false prophet that led some members to commit idolatry and immorality (Revelation 2:20). Although the false prophet remained unrepentant, Jesus affirms that the congregation can still repent by turning away from the prophet’s ways (Revelation 2:21-22).

5. Sardis – Sart

Sardis was one of the wealthiest Roman cities in the area. Home to a significant Jewish population, Sardis was a bustling city important to the growth of the Church in the area. Once a thriving trade centre, Sardis today features the remains of the Temple of Artemis, a Jewish synagogue, a Byzantine church and evidence of daily Roman life. Sardis is a smaller site but definitely worth the time to explore. Sardis was a city that had endured two surprise attacks despite its fortifications. Our Lord faults the church in Sardis for maintaining an outward appearance of being “alive,” while actually being spiritually dead (Revelation 3:1). Alluding to the city’s history of prior surprise attacks, Jesus warns the congregation to “wake up” and repent, lest he “come like a thief” to bestow His judgment (Revelation 3:2-3).

7 churches of revelation tour turkey

6. Philadelphia – Alaşehir

Philadelphia was a thriving city under Roman rule. Modern-day Alasehir (God’s City) is a titular see of the Roman Catholic Church. Artefacts from Alasehir’s colourful past are found throughout the city. The Church of St John and the St Jean Church are the key remaining Christian sites in the city. Philadelphia was home to a synagogue community hostile to Christians. Christ praises the Philadelphians for remaining faithful in the face of trials despite their limited strength (Rev. 3:8). Jesus does not reproach this congregation but condemns its persecutors. (Revelation 3:9). Christ promises that if Philadelphia’s congregants remain faithful to Him, He will protect them from the “hour of trial” and make them pillars in God’s heavenly temple (Revelation 3:10-12).

7 churches of revelation tour turkey

7. Laodicea – Denizli

Laodicea was, in ancient times, a key city in the area. Important for trade and as an important Christian site, Laodicea lies a few hours to the north of modern Denizli. The city was ruined many times by earthquakes, before ultimately being abandoned. Now, excavation and restoration projects are being carefully carried out, revealing the history and importance of the site. The reconstructed Basilicas feature intricate mosaics and are sure to delight visitors and are most definitely worth the time to explore. Laodicea was a prosperous industrial and commercial center. Jesus’ letter to this church wastes no time denouncing the congregation for its lukewarm faith, threatening to “spit” the congregation out of His mouth (Revelation 3:16). Christ scolds this church for allowing its economic prosperity to cause it spiritual bankruptcy and reveals that, despite its economic wealth, only He can provide spiritual wealth (Revelation 3:17-18).

Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.” (Rev. 1:11)

Turkey is hosting all seven of the churches mentioned in the opening chapters of the Book of Revelation . The churches of Revelation were located in Asia Minor during the era of the Roman Empire at the time the book was written around 100 A.D. In the opening chapter of Revelation, the author John send his greetings and then describes a vision he had in Patmos. John’s vision began with specific messages to seven different Christian communities in modern Turkey. Some are addressed to the “ angel ” of the city. It may have symbolized the spirit of the city or refer to a heavenly or earthly messenger.

Paul has sent 7 letters to the people and angels of these 7 churches . The purpose of the letters was to grant hope and assurance to the people who were about to encounter persecutions and austerity .

These 7 churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation are: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea and have a crucial spiritual significance for churches and believers today. It is possible to visit all these 7 churches in one tour. The details of the tour will be as:

Day 1 (Flight from Istanbul to Izmir)

We will pick you up from your hotel in Istanbul and drive you to Istanbul Airport for the flight to Izmir Airport. After your arrival to Izmir Airport , we will meet you in front of the exit gate at the domestic terminal; with a sign bearing your name and transfer you to your hotel in Izmir City . You will have free time in the afternoon depending on your arrival time. Overnight accommodation in Izmir.

Day 2 ( Tour of Smyrna , Pergamon and Thyatira, breakfast & lunch included )

The tour will begin with a pick-up from your hotel after your breakfast at around 08:30am . We will start the day with a visit to Smyrna Ancient City which has Hittite remains from about 4000 years ago . Ancient Smyrna is one of the oldest inhabited communities in the world . Polycarp , a bishop from this ancient city from 115-156 AD, was martyred because of his faith to Christianity . John told the Christians in Smyrna not to be afraid to suffer but “… be faithful till death ” (Revelation 2:10-11) and he did exactly what John requested.

We then drive to Pergamum and Asclepion Health Centre ruins. Located on top of a hill, Pergamum has served to Christianity a lot and we will see the ruins with the imagination of the past. Walking down from the ancient city, we will visit the Asclepion , which was used as a health centre in old times. The last stop will be the Thyatira ruins which is in a modern city of Akhisar now. Overnight accommodation in Akhisar.

Philadelphia Ancient City

Day 3 ( Tour of Sardis, Philadelphia, Hierapolis and Laodecia, breakfast & lunch included)

We will start the day quite early around 08:30am and our first stop will be Sardis , an ancient political and cultural center in Anatolia which was the capital of the Lydian Kingdom . The ruins at Sardis are quite impressive such as public toilets, gymnasium and the synagogue and Artemis Temple. Ruins of a small building at the south corner of the synagogue from 4th century AD are believed to be an early Christian church , subject of John’s text on the church at Sardis in Revelation.

Philadelphia , the city of Brotherly Love, is our next stop. The city has some ruins of the city wall and some arches dating from the late Byzantine era.

We will then visit Hierapolis and Laodicea Ancient Cities. Laodicea, which is of great importance to Christianity and a Holy pilgrimage center since the 4th century CE , has been mentioned in the Bible and one of the seven churches of Revelation. Archaeological Site of Laodicea was included on the UNESCO Tentative List in 2013.

Hierapolis Ancient city has thermal springs and travertine terraces which is going to be unique experience to see a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient city contains the biggest necropolis (cemetery) in Anatolia with about 1200 graves . What makes Hierapolis Ancient City different from the others is monumental limestone and marble tombs, sarcophagi and house-type tombs and St. Philip The Evangelist Martyrium. St. Paul mentions Hierapolis along with Laodicea as the center of Epaphras’ ministry . Overnight accommodation in Pamukkale.

Ephesus

Day 4 ( Tour of Ephesus, St. John Basilica and House of Mary, breakfast & lunch included)

Our last day will start with a drive to Selcuk to visit Ephesus ruins which was one of the greatest cities in the ancient world. Ephesus has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. Ephesus has special significance for Christians. From Ephesus Paul preached, Timothy taught , while later, John warned the church at Ephesus “…you have abandoned the love (you had) at first.” (Revelation 2:4) .

The tour includes a visit to St. John’s Basilica built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. It is believed that the grave of the Apostle John was located under the central dome in the basilica. THE SEVEN CHURCHES OF REVELATION IN TURKEY

If you grew up in the Christian church, chances are you’ve heard of the Revelation is higher. This apocalyptic book at the end of the Bible is filled with strange imagery and predictions of doom. But, before the four horsemen of the apocalypse ride in, the author has a message for some people in particular.

John wrote the Revelation as a message to seven churches around the western region of modern-day Turkey. The seven churches of the Revelation have become a pilgrimage site for many modern Christians. Read on to learn more about these churches and where they are today.

A Brief History of the Revelation

Before we dive into each of the seven churches of Revelation, let’s talk a little about how Revelation came to be. Most of us know Revelation as the last book of the Bible that predicts the end of the world. And while it can be interpreted that way, knowing a little bit about when and how it was written may offer a different outlook on the book.

The Revelation  was written by the apostle John, possibly the same man who wrote the Gospel of John. It was written while he was in prison on the island of Patmos for going against the will of the Roman Empire. At the time, the Romans were persecuting Christians and trying to defeat the new movement.

John’s Revelation would have been reviewed by Roman guards before being sent along to its final destination. He could hardly write a letter to the early churches saying, “Don’t worry, God’s going to bring us through this, and we’ll have our victory over the Romans in the end.” So instead, John used symbolism and allegory to get his message across.

The Revelation is packed full of symbols and references to the hope the early Christians should have that the Romans would eventually be defeated. Some people believe that the book of Revelation isn’t a prediction of the end of the world, as it seems at first glance. Instead, it’s a coded prediction of the triumph of the Christian church over the empire that persecuted them.

What are the Seven Churches of Revelation?

Let’s discuss why do the seven churches get two full chapters dedicated to them in Revelation? These churches were struggling under the persecution of the Romans and sometimes from their temptations and internal problems. These seven churches are the reason the Revelation was written in the first place.

After the Roman guards read the Revelation, they decided that it was nothing more than the ramblings of a madman. They sent it on to John’s requested destination: Ephesus, the first church on the list. After Ephesus received it, they made copies and shared those with the other churches on the list.

The seven churches of the Revelation are Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. These were important sites of early Christianity, and many of them were suffering heavily from persecution. Some others needed a reminder to stick to the right path of Christianity and not get distracted by the culture around them.

The Seven Churches of Revelation: Ephesus

The first church on the list is the church at Ephesus, the city that would have been closest to the island of Patmos. Ephesus was a great city in the first century, the fourth-largest in the Roman Empire. It was home to about 250,000 people, and only Alexandria, Antioch, and Rome itself surpassed them.

Ephesus was home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its amphitheater could hold 25,000 people and was once the site of an angry riot against Christians. Suffice it to say, being a Christian in ancient Ephesus was far from easy.

In Revelation, John praises the church at Ephesus for not giving in to a lot of persecution and for rejecting those who he calls false prophets. But he also tells them to come back to their first love and worship the way they once did. This leads some historians to believe that Ephesian Christians may have begun worshipping at local cult temples.

Today, the  city of Ephesus  has moved a few miles away from the coast and is some of the most glorious ruins of the Roman Empire . The nearby town of Selcuk serves as a home base for tourists looking to explore this once-great city. You can even see the Church of the Virgin Mary, the site where it is believed Jesus’s mother may have spent her last days.

The Seven Churches of Revelation: Smyrna

Smyrna is the second church mentioned in Revelation. It’s another port city about forty or fifty miles north of Ephesus along modern-day Turkey’s coastline. Today the ancient city of Smyrna is contained within the modern metropolis of Izmir, a thriving city that’s home to more than four million people.

Smyrna was a significant seaport in its time and vied with Ephesus for one of the most important cities in the region. Even in those early days, Smyrna had a bishop, a disciple of John himself named Polycarp. But early Christians didn’t have it any easier in Smyrna than they did in Ephesus.

Frequently in Smyrna, Christian persecution took the form of financial hardship, with Christians losing jobs or having their wealth taken away. So John tells them in Revelation to remember the spiritual wealth they have rather than focusing on their lack of material wealth. He also warns them that there is persecution coming and tells them not to be afraid of it.

Today, the ruins of the Smyrna marketplace are nestled within just a few city blocks of Izmir. You can walk the beautiful arches of the market place and see the towering columns that would have hemmed in the market. It has been through earthquakes, fires, and war, but still, this site of early Christianity stands.

The Seven Churches of Revelation: Pergamum

3. Pergamum

Pergamum, the third church of the Revelation, is the last coastal city on the list, a further sixty-odd mile up the coast from Smyrna. In the first century, Pergamum was the principal city of the Roman empire, and some of its ruins still stand on a hill overlooking the town of Bergama. Most striking of all is a steep theater built into the side of a cliff.

Pergamum also had a large temple to Zeus that even today is a fantastic sight to see. The Asclepion of Pergamum was the most famous medical center in the world in the city’s heyday. At its height, Pergamum was only a little smaller than Ephesus, with around 200,000 inhabitants by the second century.

John’s message to the church at Pergamum is a little harsher than what he wrote to the other two cities. He calls their city “the place where Satan has his throne”, possibly a reference to the temple to Zeus. He praises some people for holding to their faith, but he tells others to repent, or he’ll come soon to fight against them.

Today, Bergama spreads out in the valley below the hills of ancient Pergamum. There is a part of the older city with more narrow, cobbled streets and a more modern area of the town. Today, there are no Christian churches active in Bergama, but few Christians spread through the area.

The Seven Churches of Revelation: Thyatira

4. Thyatira

The fourth church John writes to in Revelation is the church at Thyatira. This city was to the southeast of Pergamum, and we see the path John’s manuscript may have taken beginning to loop back down around and move further into inland Turkey. Thyatira was also the only city of the seven built on flat ground with no natural defenses around it.

Thyatira was a city of artisans, home to several guilds, including linen weavers, potters, bakers, and more. But one of the biggest trades in Thyatira was the bronze trade. John used this knowledge to get his message across to the Christians living in Thyatira.

John begins his message to the church at Thyatira, praising the love, faith, service, and perseverance of the Christians there. But then he moves to condemn Jezebel, a woman who he says misleads Christians into sin. He says that God will strike her children dead and that only those who do not hold to her teachings will be saved.

Today Thyatira is only a few scant ruins in the modern city of Akhisar. Akhisar is known for its olive and textile industries and today is home to more than 100,000 people.  You can see ancient walls  scattered among modern apartment buildings and can walk the ground where Paul and Silas may once have preached.

The Seven Churches of Revelation: Sardis

The fifth city in John’s letter, Sardis, had already seen some hard times by the time the Revelation was penned. Nonetheless, it had rebuilt itself to become one of the most prosperous cities in the region by the first century. It was a few dozen miles south of Thyatira, east of Smyrna, and northeast of Ephesus.

There was a temple to Artemis in Sardis and, just a short way away, the most significant ancient Jewish synagogue in the world. There were also shops and a stadium in the area surrounding these sites of worship. The temple to Artemis had been destroyed in a devastating earthquake several hundred years before, and Alexander the Great had begun to rebuild it. Still, when Christianity entered Sardis, the temple was all but abandoned.

Unlike in the other letters, John doesn’t have much praise for the church at Sardis. Instead, he opens by telling them that they have a reputation for being alive when they are dead. He implores them to wake up and strengthen what remains, for their work is still unfinished.

Today the ruins of Sardis sit just a few miles outside the town of Sart. Sart is a small village, with only five thousand residents or so, but you can still see the ruins of the temple to Artemis and the Jewish synagogue. You can also find the remains of the church that John implored to wake up, a message that seems to have been heard by at least some.

The Seven Churches of Revelation: Philadelphia

6. Philadelphia

Philadelphia is the sixth of the churches of Revelation, and it wasn’t far from Sardis. Philadelphia is only about thirty miles southeast of Sardis and today is covered by the modern city of Alasehir. The church at Philadelphia was the youngest John wrote to, as the city itself wasn’t established until the middle of the second century.

John has nothing but praise for the church at Philadelphia. He tells them that God has placed an open door before them that no one can shut and that their enemies will fall at their feet and acknowledge that God loves them. But this promise did not save Philadelphian Christians from persecution; several of them are believed to have been killed alongside Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna.

The ancient architecture blends into the new scenery, and you can hear Muslim calls to prayer as you walk among the ruins of abandoned Christian churches. There are stunning Byzantine arches and ancient sarcophagi that you can view spread throughout the city. But Alasehir is a predominantly Muslim city today, much like the rest of Turkey.

The Seven Churches of Revelation: Laodicea

7. Laodicea

The last church John writes to is the church at Laodicea. This city was further southeast of Philadelphia and almost due east of Ephesus. It was an expansive, wealthy city situated near hot springs and built on a major highway.

Laodicea’s central location made it a commercial and banking center specializing in medicine and the black wool trade. John used these trades in his admonishments to the Christians at Laodicea.

John tells the church at Laodicea that they are neither hot nor cold and don’t know what real wealth is. He encourages them to repent and promises rewards of real wealth to those who do.

Today the ruins of Laodicea are near the modern city of Denizli. The ancient town was heavily damaged  in an earthquake in 600 AD, but you can still walk some of the roads and see the ruins of the historic buildings. The nearby city Denizli is home to about 500,000 people.

Discover the Seven Churches of Revelation for Yourself

The Seven Churches of Revelation were in desperate need of hope and guidance when John wrote to them. His message gave them that hope through allegories they would understand. And today, the ruins of those cities and their churches serve as a powerful reminder to Christians of what the early church endured.

Exploring the Ancient Churches of Revelation: A Journey Through History

Hey there, curious readers! Today, we're going on a fascinating adventure back in time to explore the ancient churches mentioned in the Bible, specifically in a book called Revelation. These churches were super important back in the day, and they each got a special letter from a guy named St. John. Let's dive in and discover what makes them so cool!

Ephesus:  Our first stop is Ephesus , where St. John lived. It was like a big deal city in ancient times, kind of like a bustling metropolis. The people here were praised for working hard and staying true to their beliefs, even when others tried to tell them differently.

Ephesus

Smyrna (Izmir):  Next up is Smyrna, which is part of a city called Izmir now. This place was fancy and rich, but some folks didn't like the Christians there. Despite facing tough times, the people were encouraged to stay strong and not give up on what they believed in.

Pergamon:   Pergamon was like a big hub for politics and business. It had awesome theaters and temples, but some folks there didn't like Christians too much. St. John told them they were doing great for sticking to their beliefs, but they had to watch out for bad ideas creeping in.

Pergamon

Thyatira (Akhisar):  Thyatira was known for making cool stuff like bronze and clothes. Even though there wasn't a big church there, the Christians were doing their best to stay faithful. St. John gave them a pat on the back but reminded them to be careful about listening to the wrong teachings.

Sardis (Sart):  Sardis was a rich city with a lot going on. But even with all its wealth, the church there was kind of sleepy spiritually. St. John told them to wake up and pay attention to what really mattered.

Philadelphia (Alaşehir):  Philadelphia was a cool city, but some people there didn't like Christians. Even though the Christians were few in number, they stayed strong and didn't give up. St. John gave them a big thumbs up for being brave.

Laodicea (Denizli):  Last but not least, Laodicea was known for being super rich and successful. But St. John said they were kind of lukewarm about their faith, like they didn't really care too much. He told them to get serious about what really mattered.

So, there you have it, folks! These ancient churches might be gone now, but their stories still teach us important lessons about staying true to our beliefs, even when things get tough. Isn't history cool? Let's keep exploring together!

Key attractions

The Great Theatre, the Library of Celsus, and the Temple of Artemis, three of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, are some of Ephesus’ must-see attractions.

Smyrna, which is now Izmir, was a key Christian hub as well. In the Book of Revelation, the Apostle John wrote to the church at Smyrna and commended them for their steadfastness in the face of adversity.

The historic Agora, Roman theater, and Basilica of St. Polycarp are all open to visitors in Smyrna.

A significant political and cultural hub in Asia Minor was Pergamum. The Apostle John sent a contradictory message to the church in Pergamum, praising them for their faith while simultaneously admonishing them to avoid idolatry and false doctrine.

The Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus, and the Asclepion, an old hospital, are some of Pergamum’s most notable landmarks. Many relics from the location are kept in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, including the magnificent Pergamon Altar.

Ancient Thyatira, today known as Akhisar, was a vibrant economic hub. Love, faith, and tenacity were highlighted in the message to the church in Thyatira, but false teachings were also cautioned against.

The Basilica of Thyatira, several inscriptions, and a Roman road are among the ancient city’s relics.

The Christian community in Sardis, once the seat of the Lydian Kingdom, was prosperous and powerful. The church in Sardis received a message urging them to uphold their vigilance and deepen their faith.

The synagogue, the Roman-era gymnasium, and the Temple of Artemis are some of Sardis’s most notable attractions.

Philadelphia

Asia Minor had significant Christian growth in Philadelphia, now known as Alasehir. The Apostle John delivered a message of inspiration and adoration to the church in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia’s ruins include a Byzantine-era basilica, many churches, and a portion of the old city wall.

A significant city in the Roman province of Asia was Laodicea, which is now located close to Denizli. The letter addressed to the Laodicean church warned against spiritual laziness and urged revival.

The Hierapolis Archaeology Museum, the Temple of Apollo, and the Ancient Theater are some of Laodicea’s notable landmarks.

Testimonials

As a young Catholic priest I was a little apprehensive to travel in a Muslim country with as much tensions as there has been in the recent past, but I was really looking forward to seeing the seven Churches which St John wrote to in the book of Revelations, as well as Mary’s house in Ephesus. I could not have been more impressed with your guide Ertunga’s knowledge and professionalism throughout the entire trip. I would have zero hesitations to go back or to recommend Ertunga as a tour guide. It as an incredible historical and spiritual experience.

Frhecker Wichita, Kansas

Enjoyed our recent 22 day trip in Western Turkey visiting many Christian History sites. Ertunga was able to knit together much disparate info, suggesting changes as we went along to compensate for weather problems, etc. I would make the following recommendations: (1) Take Euros and Turkish Lira, not USA dollars, (2) Take eye drops and diarrhea tablets, and (3) Do not pet any cats or dogs – disease spreads rapidly. Best parts of the trip for me was Cappadocia and Priene.

Swaby_commander - Helensvale, Avustralya

Our Biblical Tour of Turkey was more than what we had expected… And this was because of Ertunga and his impeccable planning and handling of our private tour. His stories made all the places we visited more alive….the ruins were impressive even dramatic but as Ertunga explained all these places to us these stones became living and breathing cities
Ertunga, was exceptional and his knowledge of history, Biblical sights, legends, myths was amazing and he had a wonderful sense of humour. We saw everything on our itinerary exactly as we had requested and the food and accommodation was great. We have no hesitation in recommending Ertunga as he made sure that we had and extremely comprehensive and fun filled trip and it was a true Turkish experience.

Roger and Raini - Melbourne, Australia

We are recommended on tripadvisor.

Travel back in time for a memorable #tbt.

Why a Private Tour? Why Felicity Travel?

  • Private tours are tailor made to your interests, so you have freedom to choose places to visit and places to skip. You decide when to start and when to finish your tour...
  • When on a private tour, while visiting the sights you do not have to wait for a long time in lines to get tickets.
  • Ertunga and Maria Ecir are both active tourist guides. This is a family business, so when you contact us to get information, you will get a reply from a local guide - person who knows how much is doable considering your time frame, who knows where to eat, what to skip, what is a must in a certain area...
  • We have been working with one team of guides for years, and they are all very knowledgeable, reliable and fluent in 2 or more languages.

june 9 - 18, 2023

The journey ministry, 10-day "7 churches of revelation" tour in turkey, prepare to be inspired.

We’re glad you are considering this tour. Our hope is that it is an experience of a lifetime.

Turkey was home to layers of civilizations. Ruins and monuments adorn the landscape as richly as does the vivid blue of the Aegean Sea.

The tapestry of Turkish history and life is vivid, magnificent, and well worn, displaying religious, cultural, and political changes that have evolved over the centuries.

DATES: LED BY: LODGING: Izmir Pamukkale Istanbul PRICING: Land Only SINGLE SUPPLEMENT:

June 9 - 18, 2023 pastor ron moore kaya hotel colossae thermal hotel eresin taksim hotel $2,895 per person $595 per person.

Upon arrival into Izmir, (ancient Smyrna) our tour representative will meet the group and transfer us to the hotel.  Ancient Smyrna is one of the Seven Churches (Rev. 2:8-11).  We will have the opportunity to visit the ruins of the ancient Roman agora.  Dinner and overnight in Izmir.

Today’s touring begins in ancient Pergamum (Bergsma) – center of rule for the Roman Empire.  The church of Pergamum was praised for its forbearance (Rev. 2:12-17).  Sights include the Aesclepion, an ancient healing center, the acropolis with its pagan temples, Alter of Zeus (some call the throne of Satan) and the Temple of Trajan.  After lunch, we will continue to Thyatira, the smallest yet most favored of the Seven Churches of which John writes. In antiquity, it was a busy trading center that was famous as a “seller of purple.”  Dinner and overnight in Izmir.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Our morning touring takes us to Philadelphia (Alasehir) the church that “kept the Faith” (Rev. 3:7-13) and Sardis, the capital of the Lydian Kingdom, and the first city to use coins of gold and silver. John berated Sardis for “appearing alive but are dead” (Rev. 3:1-6).   Our visit in Sardis will take us to the amazing ruins of the Temple of Artemis, the picturesque gymnasium, and the synagogue with original intact mosaic tile artwork. Return to Izmir for dinner and overnight

Today we take a drive to Hierapolis, meaning “sacred city.”  This was an ancient center for pagen cults until the first century when it was transformed into a Christian center.  The Apostle Phillip lived and was martyred here. We will visit the vast, ancient necropolis (burial grounds) large amphitheater, St. Philip’s Church, and the famed Roman baths.  The calcite laden hot springs of Pamukkale that have formed white travertine falls are a beautiful secret of nature that we will enjoy today. After lunch, we will continue traveling to ancient Laodicea, a city known for its riches, development of medicines and where the church was known for being “lukewarm in belief”. (Rev. 3:14-22).  The hot springs of Pamukkale combined with the cold mountain springs of nearby Colossae possibly explain this lukewarm application. Laodicea is a large, excavated site where we will see a stadium and remnants of a sophisticated water system. We return to Pumakkale for dinner and overnight. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we travel to the magnificent, excavated site of ancient Ephesus.  Once a thriving port town, Ephesus was considered the most important Greek city and most important trading center in the Mediterranean and played a vital role in the spread of Christianity.   We will walk the marble road, see the remains of the Temple of Artemis, the famed Celsus Library, the Agora (marketplace) the city bath ruins and the Terrace Houses with colorful mosaics intact. After our full day of sightseeing, we return to Izmir for dinner and overnight.  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We take a short morning flight to Istanbul and begin our tour of this magnificent city. We will visit the Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora, a medieval Byzantine church preserved as the Chora Museum.  It is decorated with some of the oldest and finest surviving Byzantine mosaics and frescoes.   Dinner and overnight in Istanbul.

Today we begin with a visit to the famed Blue Mosque-whose 6 minarets dominate the skyline.  We take a short walk to visit Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya) that for over 1000 years, has been the greatest church in Christendom and an architectural wonder built by the Byzantine Empire to impress the world. We end our day with a visit to Topkapi Palace Museum, the former residence of the Ottoman Sultans and a miniature self-contained city.  Dinner and overnight in Istanbul.

Special touring today includes a cruise on the Bosphorus – the narrow strait linking the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and separating Europe and Asia. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the bustling strait as we view the palaces, small villages, and the Golden Horn.  We will wander Taksim Square, the heart of modern Istanbul, walking the pedestrian street, enjoying the shops, restaurants, and vendors and enjoy shopping or browsing in the unique Grand Bazaar and the Spice Market. Dinner and overnight in Istanbul.

We check out of the hotel and transfer to the airport to our return flight back to the USA.
