The Monster Ball is the second concert tour by Lady Gaga to promote The Fame Monster , her sophomore album. The tour was officially announced on October 15, 2009, after her joint concert tour with rapper Kanye West, titled " Fame Kills ", was suddenly canceled. Described by Gaga as "the first-ever 'pop electro opera'", The Monster Ball Tour began four days after the release of The Fame Monster .

Initially, hip-hop artist Kanye West and Lady Gaga had plans to launch a joint tour together. Fame Kills: Starring Lady Gaga and Kanye West was confirmed in September 2009 , as a concert tour that West and Gaga would co-headline. In the aftermath of the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards , West made a public statement that he would take a break from the music industry following the media and public reaction to his outburst during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for winning the Moonman for "Best Female Video". Nevertheless, the complete schedule for the tour was released, with the tour set to begin on November 10, 2009, in Phoenix, Arizona. Shortly afterward, the tour was officially canceled without any explanation. Gaga addressed the situation at Billboard's annual Women in Music luncheon where she cited creative differences as the reason for the tour's cancelation. In an interview she stated, "[Kanye] is going to take a break, but the good news is, I am not."

After ensuring the public that she would be embarking on a solo tour in lieu of the defunct tour, Gaga officially announced The Monster Ball Tour on October 15, 2009 . The tour had originally been planned to debut in London in early 2010 , but was rescheduled, and launched on November 27, 2009, in Montreal, QC. Rapper, Kid Cudi , and singer, Jason Derülo , were confirmed as the supporting act for the tour. While Cudi was confirmed to be supporting Gaga from the beginning of the tour, it was reported that Derülo would join the tour beginning on December 16, 2009. Cudi was kicked off of the tour after the December 14th show due to inappropriate behavior towards a fan. The official poster for the tour features Gaga in her signature Versace 676 sunglasses and what she has dubbed " The Orbit ", which she first wore on the October 3 , 2009 edition of Saturday Night Live . The contraption was designed by Nasir Mazhar in collaboration with Gaga's own creative production company, Haus of Gaga .

Broadcast and recordings

Fans who met Gaga after various shows confirmed that she will be releasing a 3D movie of the tour. This is one of the reasons behind the 3-D glasses included in the Super Deluxe version of The Fame Monster . On March 4, 2010, Gaga Daily announced via Twitter : “ The Monster Ball DVD is going to be released and it will be in 3D! ” On March 8, 2010, a rep from Interscope Records released the following statement to MTV News : “there are talks about a 3D concert and DVD in the near future.” On February 14, 2011, while on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno , Gaga announced that there will be an HBO special of the concert. The program was filmed during Gaga's February 21-22 shows at Madison Square Garden and will be titled "Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden." HBO confirmed that the special will air on May 7, 2011 and will be directed by Laurieann Gibson. [1]

Gaga teamed up with Terry Richardson after the photoshoot for Vogue magazine. Richardson wanted to photograph Gaga during her offstage presence, document what she did when she wasn't performing.

L ady Gaga wraps her lengthy Monster Ball tour tomorrow night (May 6) in Mexico City, bringing to a close the biggest tour ever by a debut headlining artist.

Dating back to November of 2009, Lada Gaga ‘s 200 reported Monster shows grossed $227.4 million and drew 2.5 million people, according to numbers reported to Billboard Boxscore. Depending on how several other tours shake out this year, Monster Ball is flirting with becoming one of the top 10 highest-grossing tours of all time.

“We’re humbled by the tremendous success of the Monster Ball tour,” Lady Gaga manager Troy Carter told Billboard.biz. “The reasonably priced tickets, coupled with a great live experience, led it to being a must-see event.”

Of course, Gaga is one of the finalists at the Billboard Music Awards , taking place in Las Vegas on May 22.

Both conceptually and with regards to venues, the tour grew with Lady Gaga’s popularity, evolving from a theater trek to a stadium production. She played North America, Europe, Mexico, the U.K., New Zealand, Australia and Japan primarily as a theatrically produced arena show, but also ventured outdoors for stadiums and a memorable performance at Lollapalooza 2010 in Chicago. Booked by William Morris Endeavor Entertainment and managed by Troy Carter, Gaga worked with various promoters on the first leg of the tour, but cut a tour deal with Live Nation beginning in February of last year and taking her through the end of the tour. The Live Nation portion of the tour-166 of the 200 reported dates-was produced under Live Nation’s Toronto-based Global Touring Division, headed by Global Touring Chairman Arthur Fogel , which also helms U2 ‘s record-setting 360 tour.

Gaga’s tour has been a monster beyond just the box office numbers, with her army of dedicated fans known as “little monsters” packing houses and often dressing in outlandish style. Along the way, Gaga grew from a hot pop artist to one of the biggest acts on the planet. She won the Breakthrough Artist award at the 2010 Billboard Touring Awards and was named Billboard’s Artist of the Year in 2010 .

The career arc continues to gain momentum and spans numerous formats and media. “Born This Way,” the lead single and title track from her third studio set, due May 23, is the year’s third-biggest selling single, with 2.5 million downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Only Katy Perry ‘s “E.T.” (2.8 million) and C ee Lo Green ‘s “F**k You (Forget You)” (2.6 million) have shifted more. Gaga’s “The Fame” finished 2010 as the year’s sixth-biggest selling album, with 1.6 million sold. Overall, the set has moved 4.4 million. So far, Gaga has notched nine top 10 hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 1 with “Just Dance,” “Poker Face” and “Born This Way.”

Exactly two weeks after Lady Gaga and Kanye West’s Fame Kills Tour was canceled, The Fame singer has revealed the dates for her solo jaunt, called The Monster Ball Tour . “The Haus of Gaga had been designing ‘The Monster Ball’ for premiere in 2010 at the O2 Arena in London, but due to diligent work and preparation, ‘The Monster Ball’ will begin on November 27 in Montreal,” Gaga wrote on her official Website. ” ‘The Monster Ball’ is a multimedia artistic experience in the style of the first-ever ‘pop electro opera.’ “

The 22-date trek finds Gaga performing at much smaller, more intimate venues than those that were booked for the Fame Kills Tour. For example, instead of performing at Uniondale, New York’s Nassau Coliseum, the Monster Ball Tour will wrap up with Gaga performing two hometown shows at Radio City Music Hall. Gaga has been a staple at New York’s more famous theaters in recent months, performing at Radio City during the VMAs and then Carnegie Hall for the all-star An Evening with Gavin Friday & Friends benefit concert.

“A message to all my little monsters: The Fame Monster will come out four days before the first live show. You have exactly 96 hours to learn all of the lyrics so you can sing along,” Gaga writes. “Dress accordingly.”

In 2011 Lady Gaga was on top of the world. She had just broken through from a popular radio star to a worldwide sensation with The Fame Monster EP/album, and while performing to a packed Madison Square Garden she debuted "Born This Way" and "Yoü And I" live for the first time (for many of the viewers anyway).

Looking back on this now, after a decade with her as a performer, I am struck by her delicious sense of irony, which was always part of the deal in her early days. Can we appreciate that this came out in 2011?? Looking back, there are moments where this seems slightly trite or a little cringey, like when in the middle of "Alejandro" she says "Hands up! ... For equality!" and I really feels like that mostly for the fact such things have been parodied heavily because of all the music artists who tried to piggyback on Gaga's popularity. I really think Gaga believed in her message, especially since she was the first to really be mainstream, but also really really gay. I appreciate that.

Will Lady Gaga cross the picket lines in a Lower East Side hipster stand-off over The Box nightclub?

Mother Monster famously began her career in the dives of the Downtown neighborhood.

Now one of her haunts, The Box, is under fire after it was accused in a lawsuit of allowing men to sexually harass one of its bottle girls.

And Page Six hears that the “Bad Romance” star is being made to choose sides, with scenesters begging her to cancel plans to host her sister’s bachelorette party there next week.

The late-night club, which is known for its extremely risque and often scatological stage shows, has been open since 2007 and has hosted stars including Zoe Kravitz , Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus .

A lawsuit filed by a former staffer in 2022 claims that managers “ordered and coerced female waitresses, performers, and employees to dress provocatively and travel throughout New York City in order to lure male customers to… The Box, where they would be serviced with sexual acts, sexual intercourse, drugs, and excessive alcohol by other female employees who had been forced to perform these acts.”

The court papers alleges that the bosses “forced these female employees to do this with promises to them of money, advancement, access to wealthy and celebrity clients, and career advancement. The female employees were threatened with termination or loss of their shifts if they did not comply.”

The case is still working its way through the courts.

But we’re told the Lower East Side nightlife set are still riven by the claims, with one insider telling us scene-y sort “are urging Gaga to cancel the party.”

Natalia, a fashion designer responsible for many of the singer’s stage looks, is engaged to photographer Alex Dolan.

They’re expected to get hitched in Maine in early June.

Reps for The Box and Lagy Gaga didn’t get back to us.
