Jungle Safari of Nandan Van Zoo, Raipur is the largest man-made Jungle Safari in the whole of Asia. It is spread over an area of 800 acres, and it costs around 200 crores to develop. It was inaugurated on 1st November 2016 by our Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

In Jungle Safari Raipur, you will get to see many types of animals and flora, in addition, there is a 130-acre Khandwa reservoir that attracts many migrant birds. It is heartwarming to see greenery all around, and animals are roaming in their natural habitat in Jungle.

At present, wildlife has been kept in 4 safaris and 11 enclosures. Here tourists can easily see Royal Bengal Tiger, White Tiger, Asiatic Lion, Nilgai, Kala Deer, Gharial, and other wildlife.

However, this safari is not fully ready yet. Tourists can book tickets online or offline for Jungle Safari.

AC and non-AC buses are available for tourists. On the buses, you will find guides who will give you information about every details of the safari and animals.

There is a large lake that can be seen during the jungle safari, which adds beauty to the place. You can enjoy boating in the lake.

Nandanvan Jungle Safari – Asia’s Largest Man-Made Safari

Eco Tourism is one of the biggest trends in travel and tourism today. With more and more species becoming endangered with each passing day, this is an attempt to ensure that they are conserved. It is also one of the most popular ways to increase sensitivity about wildlife conservation among large populations.

The Jungle Safari in Naya Raipur is one of the biggest steps towards Eco Tourism. This manmade safari in the capital city of Chattisgarh is the largest one in Asia.

Launch And Development

Nandanvan Jungle Safari was launched in the year 2001 when Chattisgarh was relatively a young state in India. It was the brain child of several IAS officers. This micro forest was built in the heart of the city after demolishing several buildings, including close to 70 government buildings scheduled to be demolished in the future. For a long time, it was unnoticed but the state government introduced several projects to make it popular not just in India but across the globe.

This effort led to the construction of the largest man-made forest in Asia, The Nandanvan Jungle Safari in Naya Raipur.

The Experience

The entrance of the Safari is straight from a Hollywood movie. You have towering steel gates that have a wooden board that reads, ‘Jungle Safari’. When you enter the gates, you are welcomed by a beautiful garden and a detailed map of the safari. Golf carts are assigned to tourists to take them to various starting points of the Safari.

The entire forest has been divided into 8 zones, with the 7th one allocated for the Safari. The other zones are the Management Zone, the Administrative Zone, The Monument Zone, the Parking Zone, The Waiting Zone, the Water Zone and the Zoo Zone.

You have different safaris that you can choose from including the Lion Safari, The Tiger Safari, the Bear Safari and the Herbivore Safari. Towards the end of each ride, you get to see the crocodile conservation point.

Along with the wildlife itself, you get to experience rich tribal culture. This also includes combats between the tribal people and the wild animals to showcase the relationship between man and beast. These displays show the deep connection that the various tribes have with these animals.

Getting Around

You cannot purchase tickets for the Safari online. One has to purchase them at the door. There are two options for your safari- A/C rides and the non- A/C rides. The A/C rides do not offer the same experience as you have sealed windows that are tinted. You have a regular city bus that you can ride on when you choose the non-AC Safari. You also have the option of a bus that is secured with a steel cage.

How To Get There?

The Nandanvan Zoo is located conveniently from the major transport zones of Naya Raipur. It is just 35 Kilometers away from the Raipur Railway Station and 30 Kilometers from the Raipur Bus Stand. Nearest airport is “Swami Vivekananda Airport” in Raipur.

As of now, the project is still underway. Although you will only get to see a few lions, tigers, bears and deer as of now, the future is nothing short of magnificent.

Another of the many exciting things to do in Raipur is caving and is the perfect opportunity to explore the culture and history of the place, free of cost. Kutumsar or Kailash Cave has amazing rock formations and is located near Tirathgarh Falls. About 2kms long and 35 metres deep, it’s the largest natural cave in Asia and the second largest in the world. You can see several exotic amphibians, fish and rocks resembling Lord Shiva and Mount Kailash in this cave. Visiting hours are from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Swami Vivekanand Statue

One of Raipur’s famous places is the Vivekanand Sarovar with the 37 feet tall statue of Swami Vivekananda. This bronze statue has made its way into the Limca Book of Records for being the tallest statue of Swami Vivekananda and is a grand sight at sunset when its reflection is visible in the lake. Visiting hours are from  6:00 am to 9:00 am and 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Water Parks

Rejuvenate yourself at MM Fun City which is located near Mandir Hasaud and is equipped with tube rides and wave pools as well as high drop and fall rides. It’s open from 10:30 am to 7:00 pm. Wonderland Park is a pleasant escape from the summer heat and features  a number of gigantic slides for adults, coloured guns for children and a chance to participate in a rain dance. JVD Waterpark is the perfect destination for the whole family with its exhilarating water slides, children’s pool and a lazy river. It also has a game arcade for all ages and a fabulous food court. Both these parks are open from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Energy or Urja Park

This park is perfect for nature lovers with its exquisite gardens and lush trees. For kids, there is a nice playground where they can play and there’s even a pond for fishing. It’s open from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

The Raman Science Centre

This is one of the best places to visit in Raipur if a great place to visit if science and technology are your area of interest. You can learn about a whole range of topics like space and astronomy and can also see interactive exhibits. Nandanvan Jungle Safari- Naya Raipur- Chhattisgarh

Naya Raipur is one of the rapidly developing areas of Chhattisgarh. A fun fact is that around 30% of the state is covered by forest. Moreover there are some man made forests in the state. Nandanvan, a newly opened Jungle Safari is Asia’s largest man made forest nested inside a modern city under construction.

We checked our tickets in the A/c tourist waiting area and hopped into the non A/C bus. Soon other tourists and our guide boarded the bus. We were briefed about the park. The forest area was developed from past ten years and was opened to tourists from last two years. A huge U shaped lake surrounded the forest area where a cruise boat was roaming.

In a 1.5 km bumpy ride we entered the Herbivores Zone through the double layered security gates. We spotted Sambar deer, spotted deer and the elusive Black buck among others. A giant monitor was chilling in the cloudy afternoon. Next, we headed to the Bear Park where we spotted a couple of Sloth bears who were more focused on getting their food in the peripheral zone.

It had started raining as we entered the tiger zone. Unfortunately it was very difficult to spot the jungle king through the torrential rainfall as we peeped through the plastic sheets of the safari bus. It rained for next 20 minutes as we headed out of the Tiger Zone. Luckily the rain stopped as we entered the Lion Zone. I could spot the mother Lion sitting on a rock while her kids were busy playing in the mud. If was a great photo opportunity as I clicked them through the grill of the safari bus. The sighting was amazing.

Finally we stopped at the Crocodile Park before heading back to the pier. It was 5.30 pm in the evening as we explored the pier, the lake and the gardens adjacent to it. We headed back to Raipur city after a high tea with samosa and coffee in the cafeteria area of the park. The whole experience was totally worth it.

General Information:

Entry ticket- Jungle Safari- Non AC- Rs 200, A/c bus- Rs 300, Boating- 100. There are total 4 safaris- Herbivores safari, Bear safari, Tiger safari and Lion safari. The bird park is under construction. There is a crocodile park on the way.  Total duration- 1.5 hours. Last entry is around 5 pm in the evening.

Distance from Raipur city is around 30+ kms towards the Jagdalpur highway from which you need to take a left (courtesy Google baba).

JUNGLE SAFARI NAYA RAIPUR

This place is man made and biggest in Asia,one of its kind I must say. PM Modi inaugurated this safari just 2 months ago. It is open from 10 am to 4 pm (ticket counters timing ). Ticket costs 300 for A/C coaches and 200 for non a/c. This place has three different segments so far and it is still evolving. It has beers, tigers, and varieties of deers. Buses are closed and do not hault during the excursion as per the orders of the authority. Still we had great experience of close encounter with all these animals esp with the Tiger.

The place is connected to very nice six Lane road. Due to newness not many locals are aware about this. Ticket for safari are rs 200 for non account bus and rs 300 in action bus. Currently there are very few animals 3 tigers, 3 bears and 20-25 deers. In future lions safari is will also being planned. Overall a decent place with beautiful lake and a true natural feel.

Jungle Safari Naya Raipur is recently inaugurated in November 2016. A very new concept for this part of the country. You can hire a local Taxi from Travels/Service providers. It may cost around Rs1300 to Rs1500 for a day (you may get a better offer, not sure though). How to reach the place: (there may be different ways.) One that I can suggest is - Pachpedi Naka to Raipur-Abhanpur Road - from Purkhouti Muktangan it is 4.0km according to sign boards - follow the directions in the sign boards and you will reach the destination. Timing: Opens at 10AM to 5PM Buy tickets from counter. Inside the Safari, you will get battery vehicles and Buses for visit. You may get glimpses of Wildlife and animals. Enjoy your day.
