There’s a reason animal lovers flock to the open water—and a wildlife cruise provides the perfect vantage point.

Like a safari by sea, wildlife cruises let travelers admire animals in their natural habitats. Sometimes, it’s a top-deck dolphin spotting. Other times, it’s observing a distant polar bear. It’s about more than just  one  animal sighting, though. The best wildlife cruises include multiple unscripted fauna encounters—something I learned on a recent Galapagos eco-cruise with World Expeditions.

In just one week at sea, we snorkeled with sea turtles and sea lions, watched a blue-footed booby mating dance, visited a Galapagos giant tortoise breeding and rehabilitation center, and sat awestruck as a pint-sized Galapagos penguin mouth-fed her crying baby on the volcanic Bartolomé Island shore. Distant manta rays leaping during the ship’s sunset repositioning were a jaw-dropping cherry on top.

Sharing waterways with wildlife is awe-inspiring, but it comes with an important responsibility: protecting these pristine ecosystems. The cruise industry has a  notoriously large carbon footprint , but it’s slowly responding to travelers’ growing  sustainability demands . In 2022, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) shared new eco-initiatives, including a push for net-zero carbon cruising by 2050. The industry still has  a long way to go , but some trailblazing brands have made impressive sustainability strides. Take Norwegian adventure company  Hurtigruten , which launched the first hybrid electric-powered cruise ship in 2019. It aims to launch a zero-emission ship by 2030.

From eco-conscious Arctic voyages to small-ship Galapagos trips expeditions, here are seven of the world’s best overnight wildlife cruises—including the species you’ll see, and measures the operator has in place to protect them.

Watch whales, polar bears, and musk oxen in the Arctic

Iceland, greenland, and canada — the northwest passage with hurtigruten.

Arctic fauna abounds throughout the northwest passage, a sea trail that links the Pacific and Atlantic via the Canadian Arctic. A  19-day northwest passage cruise with Hurtigruten covers a portion of this wild expanse, as well as the coasts of Greenland and Iceland. From Hurtigruten’s 318-person  MS Fram expedition vessel , you could spot musk ox, caribou, minke and humpback whales, and, if you’re lucky, the elusive polar bear. The trip’s excursions include RIB boat rides, hiking, and citizen science programs.

The trip’s vessel, MS Fram, promises relaxation and enrichment. There’s a science center to learn about Arctic geology, the ship’s gym to get a sweat in between excursions, or hot tubs to watch for wildlife while unwinding. The recently updated boat features two restaurants plus an outdoor barbecue. The 125 cabins and suites include four classes, from polar inside to top-deck expedition suites with sweeping window views.

While any travel to remote regions like the Arctic leaves a carbon footprint, cruising with Hurtigruten is perhaps the best responsible-travel option. The brand supports give-back projects globally, including programs that provide safe spaces for vulnerable children in Greenland. It was also the first company to ditch non-essential single-use plastic in 2018.

Admire rare species in the mighty Amazon

Peruvian amazon — peruvian rivers & rainforest discovery with uniworld.

Uniworld Aria Amazon

Uniworld Aria Amazon

Imagine gliding alongside pink dolphins in the Amazon River or eavesdropping on critter calls on a  night safari in the jungle. These are among the many experiences on  Uniworld’s Peruvian Amazon wildlife cruise . The 11-day trip winds from Iquitos, the Amazon’s largest city, to the Ucayali and Marañón rivers, where the powerful Amazon River begins. Excursions feature a host of bucket-list wildlife experiences, including jungle hikes and skiff-boat rides.

The trip’s 16-stateroom ship promises an intimate Amazon experience, with floor-to-ceiling windows, ensuite bathrooms and walk-in showers, spacious lounge areas, an observation deck, and a top-level hot tub. Families or groups can enjoy four interconnecting suites, while fully air-conditioned accommodations are a welcome treat. Five-star chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino whips up Peruvian delights in the vessel’s bright and airy dining area.

Reclining Airline Seats Are Disappearing From Economy Class

In recent years, Uniworld has made major sustainable wildlife cruising strides. It’s the  first river cruise line to share its sustainability objectives  and  its progress toward those goals. Eco-friendly initiatives include reducing food waste by 50 percent by 2025 and incorporating at least one  give-back experience per trip. The river-cruise brand also follows a strict  animal welfare policy.

Follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin

Galapagos islands, ecuador — galapagos on solaris by world expeditions.

Solaris by World Expeditions on Galapagos

Marine Iguanas on the Galapagos Islands

Marine Iguanas on the Galapagos Islands

The  Galapagos Islands are a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. On a seven-day naturalist-led Galapagos cruise with  outfitter World Expeditions , you’ll become immersed in the rare flora and fauna, with the brand’s signature adventure twist. Guests can snorkel among sea turtles, sharks, and stingrays; hike by sunbathing sea lions; and visit the Cerro Colorado Tortoise Protection and Growing Centre.

On board, travelers can enjoy a rooftop deck for lounging, a dining area for buffet breakfast and lunch, and a plated dinner. The first-class Solaris yacht features a mix of queen-bed and single-bed cabins; all come with ocean views and private bathrooms. Travelers access the Galapagos for land-based outings via small RIB boats, with several hours on shore with two land stops per day.

Tourism to the Galapagos has more than quadrupled in the past two decades. While park officials enforce strict wildlife protection rules, including heavily regulated land visits, it’s important to keep your footprint as light as possible. A small-ship and carbon-offset trip, like this 16-passenger adventure, fits this criterion. The team also supports local communities by purchasing local fare, including seafood from local fishers and bread from an island baking cooperative.

Spot whales with Alaska’s only Indigenous-owned cruise line

Southeast alaska — ultimate glacier bay, wilderness, and wildlife with alaskan dream cruises.

People travel far and wide to enjoy the prolific fauna along Alaska’s Inside Passage, a wildlife-dense amalgam of fjords, glaciers, coastal towns, and an archipelago of more than 1,000 islands through the state’s panhandle. The best outfitter for taking it all in:  Alaskan Dream Cruises , the country’s only  Indigenous-owned cruise line .

If you’ve dreamed about whale watching in Alaska, sign up for the seven-night  Glacier Bay expedition , where you’ll not only admire the enormous creatures but listen to them communicate via the shipboard hydrophones. The adventure starts in mountain-flanked Sitka and ends in Juneau. Excursions include kayaking among cliffs and alongside rainforests, skiff-boat rides along the whale-abundant Glacier Bay, and later to watch puffins, sea lions, and, if you’re lucky, bears. The vessel,  Kruzof Explorer , includes six staterooms with windows and a main deck for wildlife scouting. This upcycled crab fishing boat has a central dining room and bar for gathering and plotting the next day’s activities.

Travelers can feel confident their trip supports the local community and ecosystem; Alaskan Dream Cruises runs small-ship outings (around 12 passengers per trip), offers no single-use plastics, and increasingly invests in solar panels for sustainable power.

Float among hippos, elephants, and crocodiles

Zimbabwe, zambia, namibia, botswana — southern africa riverboat safari with natural habitat adventures.

Fall asleep to the sound of hippos, wake up to the rustle of feeding elephants. The  11-day Natural Habitat Adventures riverboat adventure through southern Africa is a unique take on the African safari. It’s a hybrid boat-land expedition, with three nights on an upscale riverboat, followed by a week on a traditional land-based safari. While on the 14-person boat, you’ll explore Lake Kariba, which is packed with the region’s wildlife: hippos, elephants, crocodiles, and fish eagles. The land-based trip portion includes stops at Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s largest protected area, and Victoria Falls.

In addition to daytime excursions, from boating to 4x4 safaris, guests will enjoy relaxation via upscale accommodations throughout the journey. Overnights include the Zimbabwean Dream riverboat, where all eight suites come with floor-to-ceiling windows and access to a top-deck pool and scenic restaurant; the regal, five-star Victoria Falls Hotel in Zimbabwe; baobab-flanked chalets at Namibia’s Kaza Safari Lodge; and waterhole-view Davison’s Camp in Zimbabwe’s remote Hwange National Park.

Sustainability-wise, NatHab carbon offsets each traveler’s journey. It’s also the World Wildlife Fund’s travel partner, which means naturalist guides and WWF scientists work together to share education about the ecosystems you are admiring—and how to protect them.

Admire one of the world’s seven natural wonders and the colorful sea creatures that flock there on an overnight Great Barrier Reef cruise with local outfitter  Coral Expeditions . Support wildlife with your visit on Coral Expeditions’  14-night citizen science trip , which starts in Cairns and welcomes up to 72 guests. Citizen scientists snorkel to log marine species sightings; the shared reports aid local conservation groups with biodiversity monitoring. The ship stops at important wildlife conservation facilities, such as the Turtle Rehabilitation Center on Fitzroy Island or the Lizard Island Research Station, for narration about critical conservation projects.

In addition to the action-packed itinerary, travelers will enjoy a host of infotainment options on board the  Coral Discoverer yacht: guest lectures, a reference library, and open bridge access. Accommodations range from standard porthole window rooms to private balconies in the staterooms. There’s a sundeck lounge, an alfresco bar, communal breakfast and lunch tables, and multicourse served dinners.

Coral Expeditions is ecotourism certified by EcoTourism Australia ; it’s also part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Eye on the Reef monitoring program. The outfitter cut polycarbonate plastics and provides SPF 50 reef-safe-certified sunscreen to all guests.

Meet the ocean’s colossal creatures in Mexico’s “little Galapagos”

Socorro island, mexico — nautilus belle amie with professional association of dive instructors (padi).

Socorro Island, located nearly 400 miles off Mexico’s western coast, is known as Mexico’s “little Galapagos.” A  10-night dive adventure on a liveaboard boat with the Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) is a chance to see Socorro’s manta rays, humpback whales, dolphins, and whale sharks. Your trip aboard the 17-cabin Nautilus Belle Amie commences in Cabo San Lucas . You’ll have multiple dive and snorkel options per day (dive gear included), as well as night outings to admire the sea life in a different light.

The ship welcomes up to 32 guests, with cabins ranging from twin staterooms (lower deck) to superior suites (wheelhouse deck). Guests can relax and mingle in the salon and main deck dining area. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style; dinners are plated buffet or family style. The ship’s top-level hot tub is the perfect spot to warm up after dives or snorkels.

PADI, the world’s largest dive organization, sets the standard for responsible underwater adventures. It enforces strict  rules for marine life interactions , including never touching an animal. The PADI AWARE nonprofit also contributes to marine science and ocean cleanups, with up to two million pieces of trash removed from the ocean to date.

9 Best Trips for Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters Around the World, According to Travel Experts

For a life-changing, ethical animal encounter, book one of these expert-approved travel experiences.

cruise for animal lovers

Nature travel helps us appreciate the scope of our planet and our place in it. In the last few years, many of America's national parks set new records for visitation , with travelers seeking not just beautiful landscapes, but meaningful wildlife encounters.

So, with international borders reopening, we asked Travel + Leisure's A-List of expert travel advisors for their favorite animal experiences around the world. Whatever your passion (photography, conservation , research) or geographic interest (jungle, savannah, deep sea), these ethical and enriching trips will make lasting memories.

Helping Baby Elephants in Kenya

" Reteti Elephant Sancutary is my children's favorite place on earth. This center is dedicated to rescuing baby elephants, and visitors can interact with the babies during their daily feedings. However, being the primary animal orphanage in the Northern Rangelands of Kenya, many other species also end up here. During our last visit, my daughter bottle-fed a baby rhinoceros, Loijipu, who was only four weeks old. The center also has a pet gerenuk, Gilby, who goes on walks with you like a dog. You can hand feed the small family of hand-reared giraffes, and you never know if there will be a baby zebra, kudu, or porcupine. This is a nature-sensitive place to interact with African rescue animals of all shapes and sizes." — Teresa Sullivan, Mango Safaris

Spotting Rare Birds and Lizards in New Zealand

"New Zealand is filled with unique creatures, like the prehistoric tuatara, an animal that looks like a lizard and is the closest relative to the dinosaur. Another rare species found here is the kea, the world's only alpine parrot. While the kea is easily seen in alpine areas — and the cheeky bird isn't afraid to say hello — the tuatara is trickier to spot. I suggest going to Southland Museum , where you can meet Henry, a tuatara who is over 110 years old, or spotting them in the wild on Tiritiri Matangi Island." — Corinne Goodman, Down Under Endeavours

Looking for Beluga Whales in the Northwest Passage

"For travelers who want a truly unique wildlife experience, a cruise can be the best option. On a 16-day trip aboard Ponant's Le Commandant Charcot, you'll venture to the Southern Ocean and view emperor penguins. Even more impressive is a 22-day trip to the Northwest Passage on the National Geographic Resolution to see a pod of beluga whales or, if you are particularly fortunate, even a group of narwhals. — Mary Curry, Adventure Life

Researching Manta Rays in the Maldives

"The Marine Life Discovery Center in the Maldives at the Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru is a wonderful place to learn about a variety of marine creatures, like manta rays. You can participate in the marine biologists' research projects and help rebuild reefs — plus, the center runs a rehabilitation program for sea turtles." — Amalia Lazarov, Travelicious

Rhino Conservation in South Africa

"The best new animal experience in 2022 are the two new Marataba Conservation Camps. The activities offered are run by conservationist, vets, and researchers, and they want guests to participate in all the projects. Guest will see wildlife but also get to monitor, track, and collect data. Rhino conservation is at the heart of Marataba, and clients will engage with Dr. Andre Uys, the managing director of Marataba Conservation. I think this is one of the most innovative and exceptional conservation experiences in Southern Africa right now. It is also a plus that the area has gorgeous views of the Waterberg Mountins (the oldest red oxidized sandstone mountains in the world — some people come here just for the geology)." — Elizabeth Gordon, Extraordinary Journeys

Watching Snow Monkeys in Japan

"Seeing the snow monkeys bathing in an onsen in Jigokudani in Nagano Prefecture is a divine experience, as is seeing the cranes on the northern island of Hokkaido." — Scott Gilman, JapanQuest Journeys

Learning From Horses in New Mexico ... or Italy

" Equus in Sante Fe , walkable from the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado , has an incredible equine-assisted transformational coaching program." — Michelle Murré, Azurine Travel

"One of my favorite things to book for clients is an experience with Tuscan Cowboys (Buttero) in the heart of the Tuscan countryside. It's a beautiful way to spend time in one of Italy's most famous regions, but also to learn something new." — Andrea Grisdale, IC Bellagio

Going All Out in the Galápagos

"If you are a photographer, a handful of Galápagos ships offer cruises with some of the best wildlife photographers in the world. You are on intimate luxury ships, some with only 20 guests on board. You'll be side by side with sea lions and blue-footed boobies, learning photography tips and skills that'll turn your ordinary vacation photos into National Geographic-style shots. And best of all, the animals in the Galápagos are known for their lack of fear of humans. You are guaranteed to be just inches away from most of the iconic wildlife in the archipelago." — Allie Almario, Premier Tours

For all possible interests like exotic animals and wildlife , white sand and clear blue water beaches or diving to reefs and shipwrecks there are particularly beautiful destinations, which you should know when planning your cruise. But there are also great cruise destinations for nature that will give you a close-up view.

There are also great cruise destinations for scenery where you will see breathtaking natural sights that will leave a lasting impression on your memories. Here we look at the destinations that are going to be able to give you the best nature experience from a cruise ship.

  • Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
  • Cape Town, South Africa
  • Belfast, Northern Ireland
  • Guanabara Bay, Brazil
  • Ocho Rios, Jamaica
  • Reykjavik, Iceland
  • Alaska, USA
  • Belize City, Belize
  • Bergen, Norway
  • Townsville, Australia
  • Amazon, Brazil

13. Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Vietnam is a beautiful country where you are going to fall in love with the romance of the place. Its jungles have a great range of nature but there is also beauty that you are going to be able to see from your cruise ship too.

Ha Long Bay is so beautiful that it looks like a movie creation. Rock formations jut out of the water and are covered in lush greenery. It is a unique experience and one of the most amazing sights that you can see without stepping foot off your ship.

It’s a maze of islands but thankfully your captain is going to be able to navigate through them in expert style. Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruise lines in the world and they can take you on an incredible Vietnamese journey.

12. Cape Town, South Africa

South Africa is a dynamic and complicated country but it is also full of amazing nature, wildlife and scenery. One of the best places to see that is Cape Town which in itself is a great destination if you want a South African experience.

Just as the rock formations just out in Ha Long Bay, Table Mountain rises sharply from the flat ground of Cape Town. It makes for a stark contrast and it is an amazing sight. Seeing a mountain that close to a city is a unique quirk of nature.

Seeing it from one of the many cruise ships in the area is going to give you an extraordinary view of the city. Therefore you may as well look at that view while you are on an extraordinary ship, and Cunard has three of those.

11. Belfast, Northern Ireland

If you ever see Giant’s Causeway you will think that it’s a man-made creation as it can’t possibly be the case that nature has made such a thing. Around 40,000 individual hexagonal columns make the formation which was due to ancient volcanic activity.

It has created a series of natural formations that have to be seen to be believed. Thankfully it is fairly easy to see them as they are a short distance from the port city of Belfast. The capital of Northern Ireland is fascinating in itself with an incredible history.

There are many day trips available where you can see this magnificent sight which will leave you scratching your head about how these columns came to be. MSC Cruises is an expert in European cruises and will help you take in this marvel of nature.

10. Guanabara Bay, Brazil

If you’ve never been there, there are probably a few things that immediately come to mind when you think of Rio de Janeiro. There is, of course, Copacabana beach and the statue on top of Sugar Loaf Mountain, but there is a lot more than that.

The bay of the city is called Guanabara Bay and it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It has a series of rock outcrops that are covered by flora and fauna. Looking at it from a ship is an amazing experience but seeing it from Sugar Loaf Mountain is even more incredible

There are many beautiful places across South America and it is a fascinating place to visit. Celebrity Cruises has many great cruises running through the region and are going to enable you to see nature like never before.

Start our FREE cruise price alerts to never miss a deal again.

The Pacific Ocean is home to many islands that have an incredible level of beauty, nature and wildlife. Fiji is a perfect example of that. It is a place of natural beauty where they have many beautiful islands in which to navigate.

The dormant volcanic activity in the area makes for a unique experience as seemingly random pieces of rock jut out of the huge ocean floor. The sky is a perfect blue, the mountains a lush green and the water a stunning turquoise.

It’s a great place to hike as there are national parks, marine reserves and rainforests to see. The South Pacific islands are a wonderful place for you to visit. Holland America Line is going to help you on that journey as you sail across the ocean.

8. Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Just like Rio de Janeiro, the first thing that you think about when it comes to Jamaica probably isn’t the nature that you are going to see, apart from the white sands of course. It is a vibrant country but is also home to an epic wonders of nature.

The Dunn’s River Falls just outside of Ocho Rios is a popular waterfall where the water comes gently cascading down a series of rocks with a rainforest backdrop. Many people walk up the waterfalls as it isn’t steep and the water doesn’t move very quickly.

It’s a unique experience and one which will surely have you taking your camera out of your pocket to take a few snaps. Jamaica is also a fun destination and it’s great to travel there on a fun ship, and that’s what you’ll get with Carnival .

7. Antarctica

Antarctica isn’t a cruise destination for the faint-hearted but if you’re going to be able to brave the cold then you are going to an area that is almost untouched by greenery. The continent is 98% covered by ice and it will be an expanse of white.

Under that ice is a series of huge mountain ranges that provide a stunning backdrop. There is also a host of wildlife to see. For anyone who loves nature, it’s great to be able to boast about visiting and having an unforgettable experience.

There are shore excursions available that are going to enable you to explore the ice landscape and see the extremes of the world. Silversea Cruises is going to be able to take you on that adventure as you see the most southerly continent in all its glory.

Icebergs reflected in the light blue water in Antarctica

6. Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland is another country where you will have to wrap up warm, but thankfully it’s not quite as bitter as Antarctica. It is a country that has some beautiful ice landscapes but it’s the volcanic activity that helps to make this stand out as a nature destination.

Just outside of Reykjavik you will be able to see one feature that the country is famous for and that is hot springs. You will be able to bathe in hot water that has been heated up by magma while enjoying the freezing landscapes around you.

If you are willing to head out a little further then you are also going to be able to visit the geysers of Iceland where huge columns of water burst out from the ground. Hurtigruten Cruise Lines is a great cruise line for seeing the volcanic country.

5. Alaska, USA

Yet another icy paradise, Alaska is an amazing destination for a wide variety of different reasons. A big reason is due to Glacier Bay National Park. Being able to get up close and personal with the cliff wall of a glacier will give you an incredible sight.

Seeing all that water locked away will take your breath away. While you are there, you might also get to see some impressive wildlife as it is a common spot for whales. It may be cold but Alaska is more than worth it for nature lovers.

There are many great places to see natural beauty in the USA but not many of them are cruise destinations. With a visit to Alaska you can sail with Norwegian Cruise Line and see some of the greatest sights in the world.

4. Belize City, Belize

For those looking for a warmer destination, Belize could well be the place that you want to be able to go to get in touch with nature. One great activity to do in Belize is to go diving in the coral reefs to see the marine life or you could go tubing through the caves, but there is something even more interesting than that.

Not far from the shore of Belize City is the ‘Great Blue Hole’. While many people have heard about sinkholes on land, it can also happen in the sea too. In the shallow waters of the bay there is a drop of over 400 feet in a hole that is just 1,000 feet across.

The deep blue of the hole is a stark contrast to the turquoise waters that surround it, as it’s in the middle of a beautiful coral reef. Oceania Cruises is a company that has many beautiful ships and are going to be able to take you there.

3. Bergen, Norway

There is something about seeing the vast untouched beauty of nature that can simply take your breath away. Nowhere is that more the case than with the fjords of Norway where it feels as though you’re sailing through mountain ranges on either side of you.

The luscious green rocks are incredibly beautiful. Bergen is a great destination as to get there you have to travel through the Fjords. While you are visiting Norway, you can also head further north as you might well get to see the Aurora Borealis.

There are also amazing fjords in Chile too in case you wanted to go to South America and not Northern Europe. Whatever path you choose, Princess Cruises is going to be able to show you the beauty of the world.

2. Townsville, Australia

When it comes to natural beauties of the world, it’s hard to beat the Great Barrier Reef. Part of that is simply due to the vast scale of it. It is roughly the same length as the whole west coast of the USA with it being around 2,300 kilometers long.

It also covers approximately the same area as Japan. In terms of the best stop off to see it, Townsville is a great port of call for nature lovers. From there you are going to be able to head out to the coral reef and enjoy some scuba diving.

As it is so incredibly long, there are a few ports along the coast of Queensland where you’re going to be able to head out on an excursion. Crystal Cruises have some great itineraries past the coast to enable you to explore a true wonder of nature.

1. Amazon, Brazil

Rivers are a natural marvel of nature as they snake their way through the landscape. Most of them are inaccessible to large cruise ships but when it comes to the widest river in the world, a river cruise isn’t only available for a small ship.

An Amazon river cruise will allow you to cut through South America for around 650 miles and along the way you are going to be able to see tropical forests and exotic plants. It is a nature experience like no other.

Going that deep into a continent is an incredible and surreal experience. Regent Seven Seas is going to be able to give you that experience where you will get to discover the fascinating nature of the famous river and also the rainforests that surround it.

Wildlife Cruises: Guide to Cruises Which Offer Animal Encounters

Author: Nicole Carmichael

Published on: 02 June 2019

Updated on: 11 May 2022

Wild about animals? The new breed of expedition cruises offers a world of incredible encounters – and you get to enjoy your creature comforts, too

Whether it’s getting close (but not too close) to a lioness and her cub, spotting a polar bear in the wild or watching the antics of a penguin colony on the Antarctic ice, wildlife-watching is one of the all-time great experiences – exciting, profound and incredibly life affirming.

Long gone are the days when we had to rely on zoos and safari parks. Today, with new routes and ever more luxurious expedition ships launching all the time, cruising is your passport to the most amazing wildlife encounters on earth .

Whether you want to go whale-watching in Alaska, explore the wonders of the Galapagos, or even tick off the Big Five in Africa, there’s an incredible cruise to get you there.

These trips are rarely cheap, but we’ve chosen a selection that will reward you with a lifetime of golden memories…

I want to see… The Big Five

You’ll spot all kinds of wonderful wildlife on an African safari, but everyone wants to see the Big Five: lion, cheetah, rhino, elephant and cape buffalo. If you book with an experienced operator, your chances are better than good – and you can also expect giraffes, zebras and hippos to feature among your holiday snaps, along with antelopes and birds of prey.

Wildlife cruises: The Big Five in Africa

Any safari is an amazing experience, but combine it with a cruise and you truly have the holiday of a lifetime. Hapag-Lloyd’s extraordinary ‘Wild South Africa – The Cape of Wild Animals’ itinerary sails from beautiful Cape Town, South Africa, to Walvis Bay in Namibia, via Durban and Richards Bay.

The programme includes overland excursions to Phinda and Hluhluwe-Umfolozi game reserves, where you’re likely to see elephants, giraffes and cheetahs. Lion and zebra sightings are also possible – as is a glimpse of endangered black and white rhinos. The 15-night trip also includes a night safari to see sea turtles. Prices start at £7,524, departing 7 March 2021 ( hl-cruises.com ).

Another option

Crystal Cruises’ 14-night ‘Mombasa to Cape Town’ cruise visits Zanzibar, Maputo and Durban, with overland trips to private game reserves. Prices start at £5,575, departing 8 March 2021 ( crystalcruises.com ).

Whales and Bears

Witnessing a huge whale break the surface has to be one of life’s most extraordinary experiences, and May to September in Alaska offers a brilliant opportunity to enjoy it, with blue whales, humpbacks, minkes, orcas and belugas all frequent visitors to the area.

Wildlife cruises: Humpback whales

Thanks to environmentally conscious ships that carry fewer than 200 passengers, American Cruise Lines is one of the few operators allowed access to Alaska’s spectacular Glacier Bay. American’s 10-night ‘Alaskan Explorer’ cruise, round trip from Juneau, offers the chance to see whales, bald eagles and black bears in the wild. Prices start at £5,774, departing 6 July 2020 ( americancruiselines.com ).

NCL’s newest ship, Norwegian Joy , offers a 7-day cruise from Seattle to Juneau and Icy Strait Point, where the wildlife outnumbers the population. Prices start at £739, departing 7 September 2019, ncl.com

What to Expect

  • Early starts: The animals are up at dawn and so are you – at least, if you want the best chance of a sighting. It’s not unusual for safari trips to set off well before breakfast, so night owls take note!
  • No-shows: It doesn’t matter how much you’ve paid for the chance to see your favourite animal, there is no guarantee it will put in an appearance. Even wildlife experts sometimes go home disappointed.
  • Active days: The natural habitats of some animals can be quite a challenge to reach, so if trekking, hiking and long journeys across bumpy terrain are not your thing, study the itinerary carefully before booking. If one trip sounds too arduous, just keep looking – there’s bound to be an alternative that’s right for you.

Among the most intelligent of the great apes, orangutans are also the most endangered. They are now found only in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo, so any cruise that offers an opportunity to see them is likely to be pricey.

Wildlife cruises: Orangutans

Our favourite is Crystal Expedition Cruises’ very special ‘Philippines, Borneo & Indonesia Quest’ – a 16-night super-luxury voyage calling at some of Asia’s most exotic islands. Sailing from Taipei to Bali via Manila, Sandakan (Borneo) and Komodo Island, you’ll also get a chance to see the famous Komodo dragon. Prices start at £13,846, departing 29 September 2020 ( crystalexpeditioncruises.com ).

Royal Caribbean offers a 15-night cruise on Quantum of the Seas , round trip from Singapore via Borneo, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City, including a five-night Borneo land tour that visits sanctuaries for orangutans and sun bears. Prices start at £2,649, departing 2 January 2020 ( iglucruise.com) .

Iguanas, Sea Turtles and Rare Birds

One of the most important protected ecosystems on earth, and home to thousands of unique native species, the Galapagos Islands are a wildlife-spotter’s dream. From prehistoric-looking land iguanas and dancing blue-footed boobies to lumbering giant tortoises and harmless reef sharks, there are amazing sights at every turn. No wonder Charles Darwin found this place so inspiring.

But with so many environmental threats, from climate change and pollution to overfishing and anchor-damage to the delicate seabed, tourist access is tightly controlled and only a very few small ships are allowed to operate here.

Wildlife cruises: Sea turtle in the Pacific Ocean

One of them is Silversea’s brand new Silver Origin – plastic-free on board – which offers a 7-night luxury cruise from Baltra Island visiting Darwin Bay (good for iguanas, boobies and frigatebirds), Santa Cruz Island (for snorkelling with sea turtles and eagle rays) and Bird Island (home to no fewer than 70 avian species). Prices start at £6,480, departing 5 September 2020 ( silversea.com ).

Celebrity Cruises ’ 7-night ‘Galapagos Outer Loop’ voyage sails round-trip from Baltra aboard Celebrity Flora – a new 100-guest ship, built for Galapagos cruising, that incorporates sustainable materials in its design and uses no anchor. Prices start at £8,219, departing 7 June 2020.

How to photograph animals

  • In wildlife photography, good things come to those who wait. Don’t just snap the first thing you see – watch the animal before you photograph it and you’ll be rewarded with more interesting pictures.
  • Try to take pictures from the creature’s own eye level, even if you have to squat or lie down. You’ll get a much more dramatic shot, especially if you get eye contact (but don’t try this with anything that might be considering you for dinner).
  • To capture your subject sharply against a blurred background, use a wide aperture (low f number). This also gives you a fast shutter speed – ideal if your subject is moving.
  • If possible, take pictures during the ‘blue hour’ (just before sunrise) or the ‘golden hour’ (just before sunset).
  • Your best chance of getting ‘the shot’ is simply to shoot lots of frames. Don’t try to do it by over-editing your images afterwards. Wildlife is meant to look natural, after all.

Amazing Sealife

Glass-bottomed boat rides have long been a great way to encounter tropical fish and all the spectacular sealife that congregates around a coral reef. Most warm-water cruises offer these among their excursion options, so assuming you’re already familiar with angel fish, parrotfish and all the rest, here’s something a little bit different: swimming with pigs.

Wildlife cruises: Sealife

Living wild on a beach in the Bahamas, these cute, gentle porkers will swim up to you in the shallows, and they love having their bellies rubbed. The experience is all part of Royal Caribbean’s 7-night ‘Western Caribbean & Perfect Day’ cruise, round trip from Miami via Mexico, Honduras and the Bahamas.

The trip also includes the chance to swim with dolphins off the island of Roatan, home to the second largest coral reef in the world. Prices start at £901, departing 4 January 2020 ( royalcaribbean.co.uk ).

Maritime explorer Jacques Cousteau called Mexico’s Sea of Cortez ‘a living aquarium’, and with more than 900 species of fish, these warm waters are a diver’s and snorkeller’s dream. Offering excellent value for money, Cruise and Maritime Voyages’ 11-night ‘Treasures of the Sea of Cortez’ cruise, round trip from Puerto Penasco via Cabo San Lucas, invites you to discover some of Mexico’s best kept secrets. Prices start at £1,199, departing 20 January 2020 ( cruiseandmaritime.com ).

Flightless birds whose wings have evolved into flippers, penguins are perfectly adapted to the harsh conditions of Antarctica. Their antics are a constant delight to visitors, and you’ll be a true penguinologist after Lindblad Expeditions’ 35-day ‘Epic Antarctic Voyage’ from New Zealand to Argentina.

WIldlife cruises: Where to see penguins

Sailing aboard the purpose-built, 126-guest National Geographic Endurance , you’ll get to see 100,000 pairs of king penguins on a single beach – not to mention rockhopper, royal, Adélie and gentoo penguins, all against the backdrop of the White Continent’s truly awesome landscapes. Prices start at £37,677, departing 27 January 2021 ( world.expeditions.com ).

Poseidon Expeditions’ 21-day ‘Antarctic Wildlife Adventure’ aboard MV Sea Spirit , round trip from Ushuaia (Argentina) via the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica, offers an opportunity to see six different types of penguin, as well as albatrosses, elephant and fur seals, and possibly even whales. Prices start at £12,895, departing 7 January 2020 ( poseidonexpeditions.com ).

Polar Bears and Arctic Foxes

When it comes to spotting the magnificent polar bear and beautiful arctic fox, the clue is in the name – and that means you’ll be heading north.

The planet’s biggest land-based carnivore, an adult male polar bear can easily weigh half a ton and stand three metres tall. The Arctic fox is tiny by comparison – little more than half the size of a European fox – but this incredibly hardy creature is universally loved by wildlife photographers.

Wildlife cruises: Arctic animals

That’s why we’re so excited about Aurora Expeditions’ ‘Svalbard Odyssey’. Exploring the dazzling landscapes of the Spitsbergen archipelago, north of Norway, this cruise will be accompanied by legendary wildlife photographers Peter Eastway and Richard I’Anson, who will show guests how to make the most of every photo opportunity.

Sailing round-trip from Longyearbyen, this 11-night itinerary coincides with almost 24 hours of sunlight to help you capture stunning images of polar bears, arctic foxes, reindeer, whales, walruses and millions of migratory birds, including guillemots and puffins. Prices start at £7,030, departing 18 August 2021 ( auroraexpeditions.com ).

Hurtigruten’s 9-night ‘Circumnavigating Svalbard – In the Realm of the Polar Bear’ voyage explores all the wonders of Spitsbergen under the midnight sun, with optional extras including hiking, kayaking and traversing a glacier. Prices start at £4,775, departing 6 June 2020 (hurtigruten.co.uk).

Toucans and Sloths

A trip to Central or South America will bring you within spotting distance of the world’s greatest abundance and diversity of wildlife, especially if you venture into the Amazon basin. With at least 427 species of mammal, 1,300 types of bird, 378 species of reptile and more than 400 different amphibians, the greatest rainforest on earth can’t fail to provide you with an impressive photo album.

Wildlife cruises: Toucans

A river cruise with G Adventures is a great way to see the area in all its glory. On their 6-night ‘Amazon Riverboat Adventure’, round trip from Lima, Peru, you’re accompanied by a naturalist guide as you trek through the jungle. Other highlights include a visit to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, where you’ll see tropical birds and sloths, and a nocturnal boat excursion in search of the elusive jaguar. Prices for this adventure start at £1,279, departing 13 January 2020 ( gadventures.com ).

Holland America’s 16-night ‘Panama Canal’ cruise from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale via Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, costs from £1,879, departing 3 October 2019 ( hollandamerica.com ).

What to Take

  • Technical clothing: You’re likely to be entering some extreme environments so you need to be properly kitted out. For very cold climates, go for polypropylene outerwear to keep chill winds at bay, with several layers of fine breathable fabric underneath. On safari, muted shades of green and beige are essential, while breathable wet-weather gear is needed for rainforest adventures.
  • A quality camera: You’ve paid a lot of money to get here and you’re going to see some incredible sights, so don’t just rely on your phone to capture them. Having said that, you don’t need professional-grade equipment – a good compact camera with an excellent lens will be perfectly adequate. More important is to ensure you have enough memory cards and a fully charged battery before any excursions.
  • Binoculars: Although ships often provide spotting scopes on board, that’s no substitute for having your own binoculars. With so many models to choose from, don’t leave it till the airport – do your homework and shop around before you leave.
  • Sunglasses: Whether you’re heading to the equator or the poles, invest in a pair of well-fitting, polarised wrap-around sunglasses for all-round optical protection. Fashion shades just won’t cut it.
  • Lip balm and sunscreen: It may be below freezing where you’re heading, but the sun’s rays are incredibly powerful and it’s as easy to burn in the Arctic as it is on safari.

Msc cruises vs. other major lines: key distinctions revealed.

' src=

I’ve always been fascinated by the cruise industry and its wide variety of options. During my search for different cruise providers, I discovered MSC Cruises and was immediately attracted to the distinctive features that differentiate MSC from other top competitors.

One notable difference is the affordability factor. MSC offers cheaper trips compared to other cruise lines, making it a great choice for budget-conscious travelers. But affordability is just the beginning – there are several other unique features that set MSC apart from the rest.

  • MSC Cruises offers cheaper trips compared to other major cruise lines, especially during non-peak seasons.
  • MSC has fewer included restaurants compared to other cruise lines, with only the buffet and main dining room included in the cruise fare.
  • MSC’s private island, Ocean Cay, offers a more relaxed and less crowded beach experience compared to other cruise line private islands.
  • While MSC has made progress in integrating technology into cruising, there is room for improvement to provide a smoother and more convenient experience for passengers.

Price and Affordability

I find it interesting that MSC offers cheaper trips compared to other major cruise lines, making it a more affordable option for budget-conscious travelers like me.

When it comes to cruise deals, MSC often has lower prices than Carnival, especially during non-peak seasons. For example, a week cruise aboard MSC Seascape from Miami in July 2024 starts at $749 per person, while a comparable trip on Carnival Celebration starts at over $900. MSC provides affordable choices for those looking to save money.

Rates are even more affordable outside of summer or holidays. So, if you’re looking for a cost-effective option for your next cruise, MSC is worth considering.

Included Restaurants

The buffet and main dining room are included in the cruise fare on MSC ships, but specialty restaurants require an additional fee. When it comes to restaurant options on MSC cruises, there are a few things to keep in mind for your dining experiences:

Limited Inclusions: Unlike some other cruise lines, MSC offers fewer included restaurants with their cruise fare. You can enjoy meals at the buffet and main dining room without any extra charge.

Additional Fee: If you want to try specialty restaurants on MSC ships, you will need to pay an additional fee. These specialty restaurants offer a more unique and elevated dining experience, but they come at a cost.

Variety of Choices: Despite the need for additional payment, MSC provides a variety of specialty restaurants to cater to different tastes and preferences. From Italian cuisine to steakhouse options, there is something for everyone.

Quality of Food: MSC is known for its delicious and well-prepared meals across all their dining venues. Whether you choose the included options or decide to splurge on specialty restaurants, you can expect a satisfying culinary experience onboard.

Technology Integration

Technology integration on MSC cruises has room for improvement, but there are some online functions that may encounter errors. MSC can enhance its technology offerings to improve the passenger experience and enhance mobile app capabilities.

Improve online functions: MSC should focus on resolving errors encountered when adding a credit card to the account or making changes to the booking. These issues can cause confusion and inconvenience for passengers.

Enhance mobile app capabilities: MSC can learn from other cruise lines that have more advanced technology in their mobile apps. Passengers should be able to check-in, purchase excursions, and easily navigate the ship using the app. This would provide a smoother and more convenient experience onboard.

Overall improvement: By investing in technology upgrades, MSC can ensure a seamless and user-friendly experience for passengers, enhancing their overall satisfaction during the cruise.

Kids’ Exclusion From Cruise Lines: Cdc’s Impact and Industry Challenges

An image that depicts children standing outside a cruise ship, their disappointed faces contrasting with joyful families onboard

Here’s a piece of news that might surprise you: did you know that due to recent changes made by the CDC to the Conditional Sail Order, there is a chance that children could be prevented from going on cruise vacations?

It turns out that if a high percentage of crew and passengers are vaccinated, cruise ships can skip simulated test cruises. But here’s the catch – children under 12 can’t be vaccinated yet.

This means families with young kids might struggle to find cruises that accommodate them. This poses challenges for cruise lines like Disney or Carnival, who rely heavily on family-friendly experiences.

Let’s dive deeper into the impact of the CDC’s vaccine requirements and the challenges faced by the cruise industry in accommodating families with children.

  • Cruise ships can skip simulated test cruises if 98% of crew and 95% of passengers are vaccinated.
  • Children under 12 cannot be vaccinated yet, leading to potential exclusion of kids from cruise vacations.
  • Cruise lines like Disney or Carnival may face challenges in resuming service without allowing kids on board.
  • The CDC’s updated Conditional Sail Order encourages cruise lines to implement vaccine requirements, indirectly pushing them towards excluding kids who are not eligible for vaccination.

The Impact of Cdc’s Vaccine Requirements on Kids’ Exclusion From Cruise Lines

I’m concerned that the CDC’s vaccine requirements may inadvertently lead to the exclusion of kids from cruise lines.

The impact on family vacations can be significant if children under 12 are not able to sail without vaccination. As of now, the COVID-19 vaccine is not available for this age group, and plans to expand eligibility are still underway.

Cruise lines like Disney or Carnival may face challenges in resuming service without allowing kids on board. This creates a vaccination dilemma for families with young children who may have limited options to sail.

While the CDC hasn’t explicitly mandated COVID-19 vaccination for sailing, their updated Conditional Sail Order encourages cruise lines to implement vaccine requirements. However, this indirectly pushes cruise lines towards excluding kids from cruise vacations, presenting a complex situation for the industry to navigate.

Challenges Faced by Cruise Lines in Accommodating Families With Children

Finding vacations that cater to families with young children may become more difficult due to the challenges faced by cruise companies in accommodating them. Cruise lines like Disney or Carnival may struggle to operate without allowing kids on board, especially with the updated vaccine requirements.

Balancing safety measures and accommodating families is a complex task for the cruise industry. The decision to allow unvaccinated guests may pose challenges for cruise lines, as they need to consider the well-being of all passengers. It is crucial for the industry to find alternative solutions to address the needs of families with young children, who may have limited options to sail without vaccination.

The CDC’s updated order presents a significant hurdle for cruise companies, who must navigate the delicate balance between safety and family needs.

The Role of Cdc’s Updated Order in Potentially Excluding Kids From Cruise Vacations

The CDC’s updated order regarding vaccine requirements on cruises may inadvertently limit the options available for families with young children. The role of the CDC in implementing vaccine requirements is to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers and crew members on board cruise ships. While this is a crucial aspect in the resumption of cruise operations, it may unintentionally exclude kids who are not yet eligible for vaccination.

With children under 12 unable to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, families may face challenges in finding cruises that accommodate them. Cruise lines like Disney or Carnival, which cater to families, may also struggle to operate without allowing kids on board.

The CDC’s updated order presents a complex situation for the cruise industry, as they need to strike a balance between safety measures and accommodating families with young children.

Implications of Vaccine Requirements on the Recovery and Resumption of Cruise Operations

As a passenger, I can understand the importance of vaccine requirements in ensuring the recovery and resumption of cruise operations. The role of vaccination requirements in the recovery of the cruise industry is significant. Balancing safety measures and family accommodations in the cruise industry is crucial for the successful restart of operations.

Vaccine requirements may be necessary for cruise lines to resume operations and regain the trust of passengers. The decision to allow unvaccinated guests poses challenges for cruise lines in terms of ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew members. Cruise lines need to find alternative solutions to address the needs of families with young children who are not yet eligible for vaccination.

Finding Alternative Solutions for Families With Young Children in Light of Cdc’s Updated Order

I believe it is essential to explore alternative solutions for families with young children in light of the CDC’s updated order.

With the current vaccine requirements for cruise passengers, families with children under 12 may face challenges in finding cruises that accommodate them. Cruise lines like Disney or Carnival, known for their family-friendly experiences, may struggle to operate without allowing kids on board.

It is crucial for the cruise industry to consider the balance between safety measures and accommodating families. One alternative solution could be the implementation of family-friendly cruises that cater specifically to families with young children. These cruises could have designated areas and activities suitable for kids, ensuring an enjoyable experience for the entire family.

Will Kids Under 12 Be Able to Go on Cruises if They Are Not Vaccinated?

No, kids under 12 may not be able to go on cruises if they are not vaccinated. Cruise restrictions may require vaccination for all guests, limiting travel alternatives for families with unvaccinated children.

How Many Unvaccinated Guests Are Cruise Lines Allowed to Have on Board?

Cruise lines are allowed to have a limited number of unvaccinated guests on board. However, the exact number varies depending on the size of the ship. It is important for cruise line policies to strike a balance between safety and accommodating different guest needs.

Are There Any Exemptions for Guests With Medical Conditions or Allergies Who Cannot Receive the Vaccine?

Yes, there are exemptions for guests with medical conditions or allergies who cannot receive the vaccine. Cruise lines may need to find alternative options to accommodate unvaccinated guests while ensuring safety measures are in place.

How Are Cruise Lines Like Disney and Carnival Affected by the Cdc’s Updated Order?

Cruise line revenue may be affected by the CDC’s updated order. Vaccination requirements for crew members could pose challenges for cruise lines like Disney and Carnival, impacting their ability to resume operations.

What Challenges Do Families With Young Children Face in Finding Cruises That Accommodate Them?

As a parent, finding kid-friendly cruises can be challenging. It’s important to consider the availability of cruises that accommodate young children and provide appropriate amenities and activities for them.

In conclusion, the CDC’s updated Conditional Sail Order has the potential to exclude children from cruise lines due to the requirement for a high percentage of vaccinated passengers and crew. This poses significant challenges for cruise lines, particularly those that cater to families with young children.

Implementing vaccine mandates may inadvertently exclude kids who are not yet eligible for vaccination, impacting the recovery and resumption of cruise operations. To address this issue, the industry will need to find alternative solutions that prioritize the safety of all passengers while accommodating families with young children.

As the saying goes, ‘Necessity is the mother of invention,’ and it is crucial for cruise lines to adapt and find creative ways to meet the needs of families while maintaining safety measures.

From tracking polar bears across the Arctic tundra to swimming with sea lions in the Sea of Cortez, the world is full of incredible wildlife adventures to experience. If you’re an animal lover, you won’t want to miss these unforgettable wildlife vacations.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

cruise for animal lovers

This remote archipelago off the coast of Ecuador just might be the ultimate wildlife vacation destination. You don’t need special photo equipment or giant zoom lenses to get close-up wildlife shots; because there are no natural predators here, the animals are unafraid of people, and you’ll often find yourself within a few yards of sea lions, giant tortoises, waved albatrosses, and iguanas. Keep an eye out for the world’s only tropical penguins.

How to get there: There are a few dozen hotels and inns in the Galapagos, including the cozy Semilla Verde Boutique Hotel on Santa Cruz Island, but to see as many animals as possible you’ll want to hop on a boat. Vessels here can carry no more than 100 passengers by law, and many are much smaller, creating an intimate experience. Popular operators include International Expeditions , Celebrity Cruises , and Metropolitan Touring .

cruise for animal lovers

There are few sights more magnificent than a 400-pound Bengal tiger stalking across the grass, muscles rippling under its sleek striped coat. Tigers are most easily spotted in a string of parks across India, including Corbett and Bandhavgarh National Parks. The most appealing, though, may be Ranthambore National Park; once the hunting grounds of Jaipur’s maharajas, the park features not only plenty of tigers but also temple ruins and other wildlife such as leopards and sloth bears.

How to get there: Tiger Safari India offers a variety of tiger-spotting packages ranging from four nights to three weeks. The ultra-luxe Oberoi Vanyavilas is located right outside Ranthambore National Park and can help you arrange excursions.

cruise for animal lovers

For many travelers, Antarctica is the wildlife trip of a lifetime. The climate is hostile and the journey to get there is long, but the rewards are many: Picture elephant and fur seals, humpback and orca whales, and thousands of penguins, all set against a backdrop of ice in every possible shade of white and blue. If you have the time and budget, consider booking a trip that includes a stop in South Georgia to see its massive penguin population (including king penguins, which are more difficult to find on the Antarctic Peninsula).

How to get there: Quark Expeditions specializes in polar journeys and even offers fly-in options for travelers who want to skip the notoriously rough Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica. For luxury cabins and food, consider a cruise with Silversea .

Rwanda and Uganda

baby gorilla in rwanda

Imagine crouching in a dense green forest just a few yards away from a mother gorilla cradling her baby or a 400-pound silverback foraging for food. There are only about 880 mountain gorillas left on the planet, and Rwanda and Uganda are the best and safest places to view them. Uganda is a better option for travelers on a budget, as permits and accommodations tend to be cheaper; it’s also easy to add other adventures onto your wildlife trip such as spotting lions and elephants in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Meanwhile, Rwanda has better infrastructure, shorter driving distances, and the chance to see playful golden monkeys.

How to get there: In Rwanda, consider basing yourself at the high-end Virunga Lodge , which boasts lake and volcano views and will arrange treks in search of gorillas and golden monkeys. In Uganda, the recently renovated Bwindi Lodge features butler service for all guests and grounds where gorillas often roam. Both lodges are operated by Volcanoes Safaris , which offers four- to seven-day tour packages in Uganda and Rwanda.

Svalbard, Norway

cruise for animal lovers

Located halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, this cluster of icy islands is one of the few places on the planet where you can see polar bears stalking across the ice in their natural habitat—along with reindeer, Arctic foxes, puffins, walruses, and seals. Most people visit in the summer, when the midnight sun shines all night long.

How to get there: You can base yourself at a hotel such as Funken Lodge , which can arrange wildlife excursions, but the most convenient and far-reaching way to discover Svalbard is on a cruise ship. Quark Expeditions , Lindblad Expeditions , and G Adventures are among the operators that can take you there.

The Pantanal, South America

cruise for animal lovers

Sprawling across parts of Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay, the Pantanal is the planet’s largest system of freshwater wetlands. The Pananal has an even denser concentration of wildlife than the Amazon; visitors can spot jaguars, caimans, macaws, river otters, monkeys, egrets, anteaters, and many more in the region’s broad floodplains.

How to get there: Pantanal Nature runs wildlife tours, including jaguar-focused excursions, in the northern part of the region. Ecolodges such as Araras Pantanal Ecolodge and SouthWild Pantanal Lodge also arrange wildlife trips around the region.

Alaska, U.S.A.

cruise for animal lovers

With bald eagles soaring overhead, humpback whales flashing their flukes in the water, and hungry bears stalking rivers in search of salmon, Alaska offers a feast of wildlife travel adventures. Denali National Park is a good place to spot Alaska’s version of the African Big Five: moose, caribou, Dall sheep, wolves, and grizzly bears. Many visitors come on cruise ships through the Inside Passage, where you can often see marine animals such as sea otters, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and various types of whales.

How to get there: This list of bear-viewing tours is a good place to start your research if viewing black, grizzly, or polar bears is a must-do for you. Numerous cruise lines offer Alaska voyages, including big-ship lines like Princess and Holland America , and smaller expedition companies like Alaskan Dream Cruises and UnCruise Adventures . For stays in Denali National Park, consider booking a lodge or cabin room at McKinley Creekside Cabins .

Borneo, Southeast Asia

cruise for animal lovers

Covered in old-growth rainforest and split among the nations of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei, Borneo entices travelers with the chance to spot orangutans swinging through the trees or catch a glimpse of Asia’s smallest elephant. Love monkeys? Don’t miss a trip to Kinabatangan Wildlife Reserve, home to a whopping 10 different primate species including proboscis monkeys, orangutans, and multiple variants of macaques and langurs. Keep an eye out for the elusive Malayan sun bear and its distinctive white or gold patch of chest fur.

How to get there: Intrepid Travel and G Adventures run a number of small-group Borneo tours with various price points and activity levels. If you’d rather travel independently, you can book a multi-night package at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge , located in the Danum Valley Conservation Area; past guests report seeing red leaf monkeys, orangutans, macaques, and various colorful birds around the grounds.

No wildlife lover should pass up a chance to see Africa’s legendary Big Five: lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards, and Cape buffalo. In Tanzania you’ll find them all plus many more, including hippos, giraffes, and zebras. The country is most famous for the Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest move en masse from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in neighboring Kenya; June and July are the best months for viewing the migration in Tanzania.

How to get there: Bright African Safaris is one well-regarded local operator. Nomad Tanzania runs luxurious safari camps across the country. Intrepid Travel offers a number of Tanzania packages, many that also include time in Kenya.

Sea of Cortez, Mexico

cruise for animal lovers

Also known as the Gulf of California, the Sea of Cortez is the body of water between the Baja California peninsula and the mainland of Mexico—and it’s teeming with wildlife. Blue, gray, sperm, fin, and humpback whales migrate through these waters at various times of year, while dolphins and orcas are year-round inhabitants. You can even go swimming alongside playful sea lions and gentle whale sharks.

How to get there: You can base yourself in Los Cabos and take whale watching and snorkeling excursions to see the local wildlife. For a more in-depth look at the region, book a small-ship expedition cruise with operators such as Lindblad Expeditions or UnCruise Adventures .

Table of Contents

1. Help Injured Kangaroos In Australia

The Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs was established in 2011 by Chris “Brolga” Barns, a former tour guide in the outback of Australia.

Sadly, many kangaroos are hit by cars and killed each year. Sometimes, mother kangaroos will have a joey (baby) in the pouch who might survive the crash. The mission of the Kangaroo Sanctuary is to rescue these joeys and eventually return them to the wild.

Those who couldn’t survive in the wild are released into their 188 acre sanctuary, which has high fences to protect these kangaroos from predators like dingoes. Today around 15 adult kangaroos are living in the sanctuary.

You can do a guided tour through the sanctuary at sunset on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday evening. Bus transfers from your accommodation in Alice Springs are included in the AUD$105 ticket price.

The tour lasts for 2.5 to 3 hours, and begins in the late afternoon as that is when the kangaroos are waking up. During the tour, you can interact with the kangaroos and even cuddle a joey.

Education is a big part of the tour and you’ll learn about stopping to check the pouch if you see a dead kangaroo on the road. Many visitors say this is one of their favorite things to do in Central Australia .

2. Visit An Orangutan Sanctuary In Borneo

Orangutans are a very close relative to humans, sharing 97% of DNA. These large primates spend most of their lives in the trees of Borneo and Sumatra.

Due to illegal hunting and mass deforestation (for the production of palm oil), orangutans are a critically endangered species, with some experts believing they will go extinct in the wild within 50 years.

One of the best-known orangutan sanctuaries is the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre , which opened in 1964.

The sanctuary was established for orphaned or injured orangutans where they can learn how to live in the wild and eventually be returned to the forest.

At the centre, you can see the orangutans in the large, un-walled forest, especially during the daily feeding times (10am and 3pm). You can also watch the younger orangutans in the nursery from behind the safety glass.

wildlife vacations helping desert lions in Namibia

3. Help Veterinarians & Learn About Desert Lions In Namibia

Stand on the front lines of conservation with this unique opportunity to participate in veterinary checks of desert cats, with a portion of your trip directly benefiting appropriate efforts.

Wilderness Travel provides an intimate experience for six travelers at a time to work with an international team of veterinaries and local experts.

Visit the renowned Desert Rhino Camp to understand how local research efforts help to ensure the survival of the black rhino and combat rhino poaching .

You will learn about the work of Dr. Flip Stander, an expert on the elusive desert lion, who spent many years isolated in the desert to accumulate this knowledge.

June travelers can assist veterinarians in an annual medical check, including the weighing, measuring, and vaccinating of leopards, cheetahs, and lions.

4. Experience A Cambodia Conservation Tour

Wild Frontiers (formerly Journeys Within) wants to help you get to know Cambodia’s most beautiful sights while actively promoting the conservation of the species and places that make it special.

Since some travelers want to see animals, they’ve partnered with organizations dedicated to conservation and humane treatment of animals so their customers can do this in an ethical manner.

On the Wild Cambodia Tour, visit highlights of the country with wildlife visits interspersed throughout the itinerary.

For example, in Phnom Penh you’ll explore national monuments and war memorials as well as the world’s biggest Sun Bear sanctuary.

Leaving the big city, visit the Elephant Valley Project  and hear stories of their nine beautiful residents who are able to roam in a natural habitat, free from poachers.

Next, you’ll get to know the forest environment with an exciting zip line tour before heading to the Mekong River and meeting the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins in their natural habitat. These are just a few experience examples.

travelers volunteering with jaguars in Brazil

5. Spot Jaguars In The Pantanal Of Brazil

Demands from tourists eager to see jaguars in the wild at a low cost has pressured Brazilian operators to stoop to unsustainable practices, including baiting, radio collaring, and allowing multiple boat viewings at once in Puerto Joffre.

This acclimates jaguars to human presence so they begin exhibit behaviors as if they were in a zoo instead of in the wild.

As a sustainable alternative, Wild Planet Adventures takes you to the Taiama Reserve, which is not easily accessed by budget do-it-yourself travelers.

Tourists and the public cannot enter this federally protected Ecological Station itself, but you can circumnavigate the island reserve in search of the elusive jaguar who often hunt caiman by the river.

Wild Planet Adventures utilizes biologist guides with strict sustainable protocols, averaging about 1.5 jaguar sightings a day in this area.

This high volume of quality sightings proves that jaguar tourism can exist sustainably thanks to protocols such as banning the use of radios, using highly trained biologist guides with strict viewing protocols, and limiting boats to one at a time.

Furthermore, instead of jaguars habituated to human presence, these jaguars around Taiama are alert and active and exhibit authentic behaviors consistent with wild animals in their natural habitat.

The rest of this action-packed itinerary includes other sustainable animal interactions like tracking anacondas, horseback riding through a private animal reserve, going on bird walks through woodlands and hiking through the rainforest looking for primates.

6. Running For Rhinos In Kenya

If you don’t mind getting sweaty to save the rhinos, consider an unforgettable safari marathon at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya.

Every year in June, the Tusk Foundation — with Prince William as its royal patron — hosts a world-renowned race where you can run alongside the animals you hope to save.

After the marathon, runners can add to their safari experience by booking a gorilla trek with  Aardvark Safaris , the event’s travel partner.

Not only do the funds from your race protect animals, but you can visit baby rhinos, partake in safari drives, and enjoy eco-friendly luxury accommodations.

7. Protect Grizzlies Through A Bear Rainforest Ship Safari In Canada

Have you dreamed of encountering grizzlies in the wild? Maple Leaf Adventures provides an opportunity to glimpse the rare white spirit bear from the safety of a classical wooden schooner or tugboat, with the proceeds of your trip benefiting conservation efforts.

This boutique expedition cruise takes you through the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia, Canada, where bears, whales, and wolves roam free through a vast expanse of fjords, islands, and rainforests.

Local crew and wildlife guides lead frequent short trips that include guided viewings in bear havens, rainforest walks, remote beach exploration, and visits to whale research stations and local villages.

Groups are capped at 12 people, with everyone sleeping and dining aboard historic coastal ships, with meals that often incorporate fresh-caught ingredients.

Maple Leaf Adventures has been involved in the conservation of the Great Bear Rainforest since the mid 1990s, fighting hard to end the trophy hunting of grizzly bears.

They also donate at least 1% of overall revenues to coastal conservation each year, and this trip includes donations to conservation research on whales and grizzly bears.

8. Safari Adventure To End Elephant Poaching In Kenya

If you’ve dreamed of game drives, scenic bush walks, bush meals, and cultural visits to Maasai villages but want to make sure your visit promotes animal conservation, consider staying at Richard’s Camp in the heart of Kenya’s Masai Mara National Park.

This luxury camp has 70 acres of private land situated on the banks of the Njageteck River and regularly wins awards for its private and exclusive experiences.

The resort also has started the Mara Elephant Project (MEP), which tracks the movements of the elephants while employing a Rapid Response Unit to quickly respond to conflict situations and poaching alerts.

MEP also educates the local community by teaching human-elephant conflict resolution methods and providing anti-poaching education so locals can live alongside the elephants.

Whether you participate in the yoga retreat or just visit Richard’s Forest or River Camp, you can book an MEP excursion.

This will include a presentation by local experts about MEP activities and operations and a discussion of the Mara community issues that affect the elephant. You can meet the team of rangers, view the tracked (collared) elephants on Google Earth, and potentially tour of the MEP headquarters.

elephants at Elephant Nature Park in Thailand

9. Volunteer At Elephant Nature Park In Thailand

Many tourists go to Thailand wanting to interact with elephants; but unfortunately, they have no idea how abused the animals are.

Many of the elephants that give elephant rides, paint, or perform acts are poached out of the wild or bred in captivity and are subjected to abuse to appease humans.

Fortunately, there’s one place where you can interact with elephants in an ethical way : the Elephant Nature Park (ENP) rescue and rehabilitation center near Chiang Mai.

ENP rescues elephants from horrendous and abusive situations and gives them a place to live freely, have babies, and form their own families.

This is one of numerous ethical Chiang Mai experiences . You can visit for the day or stay longer.

Volunteer positions fill up months in advance, but if you’re lucky enough to snag one you can stay in a bamboo hut and work with the center.

On any given day, you can help with bathing and feeding elephants, bagging elephant dung for a nearby organic farm, and sharing the park’s mission with day visitors.

Any money earned by the park goes right back to the elephants and those kept by locals who cannot afford proper medical care.

travelers feeding dolphins near Brisbane at Tangalooma Island Resort in Australia

10. Have A Wild Dolphin Experience In Australia

Just off the coast from Brisbane lies Moreton Island, home to Tangalooma Island Resort . The resort is famous for its pod of wild dolphins which arrive just after sunset.

Guests of the resort may participate in the dolphin feeding experience. Wild dolphins have been visiting the Tangalooma Jetty since the 1980s when they would feed on guests’ bait and reject fish.

Throughout the 1990s the resort owners began to feed the dolphins and developed strict protocols in conjunction with the Marine Park Authority.

The dolphins are only fed 10 – 20 percent of their daily food needs, and touching the dolphins is forbidden. These protocols are in place to prioritize the health and well-being of the dolphins so they won’t be dependent on humans feeding them.

You’ll also find the Eco Centre right by the jetty, which details the history of the dolphin feeding program, along with more information about the two families of dolphins who regularly visit Tangalooma.

19 Vacations for Animal Lovers to Consider

Below you will find some of our favorite vacation spots for those who love animals. Our in-house travel experts have visited each of these places and are happy to share their insider knowledge with you!

1. Tanzania

Located in eastern Africa, Tanzania is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites and is one of the best places to see the Big Five in all of Africa. Without a doubt, one of the highlights of a safari here is visiting the Ngorongoro Crater which is located adjacent to Serengeti National Park. This large volcanic caldera is home to one of the world’s biggest concentrations of wildlife

One of the best times to visit Tanzania is during the Great Migration from June through August when you can see thousands of zebras, gazelles, and wildebeests make their way across the Serengeti. The weather during this time tends to be much drier than in other seasons which draws more animals to watering holes, greatly increasing your chances of animal sightings.

Important info: While Tanzania is lucky enough to have a small rhino population, these numbers are dropping quickly due to continuous poaching. Although we know that it’s tempting, it’s incredibly important that you don’t post photos of rhinos on Facebook or social media as these images could potentially be used to help poachers discover where rhinos are.

After you have finished your safari, you can head to Zanzibar where you relax on stunning white sand beaches. If you’re feeling energetic, you can also climb Mount Kilimanjaro!

2. South Africa

Like Tanzania, South Africa is famous for its wide array of African animals. Elephants, giraffes, and lions can all be found here. However, unlike Tanzania, many of the national parks can be explored in your own vehicle. This makes it considerably cheaper than doing an African safari. Some of the most famous self-drive parks include Kruger National Park which is easily accessible from Johannesburg by both private and public transport, and Addo National Park which is located approximately halfway between Durban and Cape Town and acts as a great pitstop while traveling between the two cities. If you would prefer to leave the car behind and join an organized safari, this can easily be arranged through some of the local accommodation providers or by booking directly through one of the many tour operators here.

Many visitors choose to combine a trip to Kruger National Park with additional travel throughout the country. For many, Cape Town is one of the trip’s highlights thanks to its jaw-droppingly beautiful topography, laid-back vibe, and incredible surrounding attractions. From here, you can head up to Stellenbosch to try some of the country’s world-class wines direct from the source. Alternatively, you can make your way up the coastline to check out South Africa’s rugged beaches which are a photographer’s delight.

While the Bahamas has always been a go-to destination in the Caribbean for North Americans, social media has brought to light one very unique activity that is drawing animal lovers to these gorgeous islands. Yep, you may have already guessed it! It’s swimming with pigs. These adorable little critters live on Exuma and call Big Major Cay home. No one knows for sure how they got here. It’s believed that they either were left here by sailors who never came back for them, or they managed to swim to safety from a nearby shipwreck and created their own piggy paradise.

There are about 20 pigs that now live on what has unsurprisingly become known as Pig Beach. It’s only accessible by sea and you can either arrive by your own private boat or by a day tour. If you bring a couple of pieces of fruit with you, you may find yourself surrounded by some new best friends!

4. Istanbul

While Turkey itself isn’t particularly famous for its wildlife, it’s still definitely a great place for animal lovers thanks to the many stray dogs and cats that call Istanbul home. Unlike in other cities around the world, the animals of Istanbul are taken care of and some may say that they are even spoiled.

While walking down the streets of this breathtaking city, you will find special “houses” where cats can seek shelter from the elements. These houses are usually surrounded by food and are well-maintained. Meanwhile, the stray dogs of Istanbul are gentle giants that lounge around on the street corners and sidewalks much like some members of the local population.

In my personal experience, many of the cats and dogs that you see are more than happy to hang out with you for a bit in exchange for a few pats and cuddles, making this the perfect place for animal lovers.

What happens when you combine one of the world’s largest populations of vegetarians with an incredibly diverse landscape? It’s an animal lover’s dream come true! India is well-known for its worship of cows, but what many people don’t realize is that its compassionate treatment of animals goes far beyond that.

One of the best things about visiting India is the sheer size and diversity of the country, making it easy to combine a few different types of vacations into one. For instance, you can spend a few days exploring the historical wonders of Delhi and Rajasthan and follow it up with a few days of beach time in Goa before heading up into the foothills of the Himalayas in Rishikesh. There, you can immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature.

As you travel around, don’t be surprised to find cows meandering their way down the street, stray dogs that are so well-fed that they are beginning to resemble bowling balls, and mischievous goats and monkeys that take advantage of the moment when humans look away so that they can steal food. India also happens to be one of the best places in the world to try delectable vegetarian cuisine, so you may even find yourself understanding exactly how the dogs got that way!

When it comes to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, trekking through Uganda’s Bwindi Forest National Park to see mountain gorillas has got to be pretty high up there! These gentle giants live high in the mountainsides of Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo and it’s thrilling to see them in their natural environment. The cost of a gorilla trek is very expensive, but much of the money goes back into the local communities to help the preservation of the natural environment, reduce poaching, and provide valuable financial support for the villages around the park. It’s imperative to book well in advance as trekking permits can be snapped up pretty quickly, particularly during the high season.

It’s also important to remember that because the gorillas live deep in the jungle, there will be some hiking involved. The amount of time depends on how long it takes for the rangers to find them. You will want to wear long pants that you can tuck into your socks and a sturdy pair of hiking boots as they can get very muddy depending on the time of year that you go.

When many people think of a dream beach destination, they often imagine a place with gorgeous white sand beaches, aquamarine water, swaying palm trees, and a gentle breeze. If you’re one of those people, Hawaii is where it’s at!

One of the main reasons that many people visit Hawaii is to see the abundance of marine life there. If you want to unleash your Little Mermaid and make friends like Sebastian and Flounder, some of the best snorkeling spots include the Molokini Crater, Coral Gardens, and Turtle Town which is the best place to see sea turtles on Maui and Hulopoe Bay. Don’t forget Molokai on Lana’i and Hanauma Bay and Sharks Cove on Oahu. In all of these places, you can feel the magic of fish swirling around you as you swim through the crystal-clear water. Some are accessible by walking off the beach while others can only be reached by boat. Regardless of how you decide to do it, you’re guaranteed to have a magical experience.

8. Australia

Much like Africa, Australia is home to many unique species of wildlife that can be found nowhere else on the planet. From playful kangaroos who will eat out of your hand to chubby wombats that resemble cartoon characters, Australia’s wildlife is a major attraction to the “Land Down Under” and a great reason for animal lovers to make the long journey there.

While you’re likely to see kangaroos if you travel outside of the major cities, one of the best ways that you can guarantee some truly memorable animal experiences is by visiting one of the wildlife reserves or zoos where you can get a closer look at these amazing creatures. From south Australia to Tasmania, you will find these sanctuaries throughout the country, meaning you don’t have to go far to see something remarkable.

Some of the most popular, although not always the most easily accessible, destinations to see Australia’s animal life is the Great Barrier Reef. This is one of the best vacation destinations for scuba diving and snorkeling. Additionally, Rottnest Island is home to a resident population of quokkas. These wallaby-like marsupials have become the mascots of this island located a short boat ride from the coast of Perth and are a delight to interact with. They are completely tame and even love to pose for a selfie or two!

9. Everglades National Park, Florida

Everglades National Park offers mind-boggling diversity in terms of plants and animals. Encompassing more than 1.5 million acres of tropical wetlands and thick mangroves. It’s a breathtaking sight to behold. The icing on the cake is the chance to see alligators, crocodiles, snakes, panthers, Florida black bears, river otters, and even manatees as you cruise through the park on an airboat. There are plenty of tours available that will take you deep into the park and give you a great understanding of the biodiversity of the environment.

10. Antarctica

Despite the remoteness of earth’s seventh continent, a trip to Antarctica is more accessible than you may think. Cruises leave frequently throughout the summer months and begin making their way across the Drake Passage. Before you know it, you will begin to see incredible wildlife including whales, penguins, and seals in its natural habitat. It’s definitely one of the most surprising vacations for animal lovers!

During most cruises, you can choose extra “excursions” such as camping on the ice, paddleboarding, or kayaking that allow you to get an even closer look at the animals. When I went to Antarctica, I decided to do paddle boarding. Although it was expensive, it was well worth the money to see penguins and sea lions gliding below me as I made my way through the icy waters.

11. Costa Rica

Located roughly in the middle of Central America, Costa Rica has long been an eco-tourism destination thanks to its ecological diversity. You’ll be blessed with its lush rainforests that are home to over 100 different species of trees, plus sloths, monkeys, and tons of exotic birds.

12. Galapagos Islands

Part of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are an ecological wonderland full of diverse flora and fauna. This is where Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution, and since then, millions of visitors have made their way there to see the giant tortoises, iguanas, sharks, sea lions, blue-footed boobies (yes, that is really their name), and many more.

Despite their location around 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are surprisingly easy to visit with direct flights leaving from Guayaquil. Once you arrive, you have two different options for exploring the islands. The first is via a cruise which can take you to some of the more remote areas and allow you to see a breathtaking variety of animals. Alternatively, you can visit the three main islands of the chain including San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, and Isabela. From these islands, you can do different day trips such as snorkeling and kayaking while staying in one of the many budget-friendly accommodation options.

13. The Amazon Rainforest

After you have finished your trip to the Galapagos, you can also head back to the mainland and start making your way into the Amazon rainforest which straddles the borders of Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Guyana. This is one of the most ecologically diverse places on the planet with more than 40,000 plant species, 3,000 freshwater fish species, and 370 types of reptiles. You can explore a small section of it during a multiday tour. During your trip, you may get a chance to see sloths, anacondas, jaguars, pink river dolphins, and black spider monkeys. It isn’t easy to reach this stretch of ecological magic but you will be well-rewarded when you’re there.

Keep in mind that mosquitos in the Amazon are roughly the size of baseballs and can seemingly bite you through multiple layers of clothing. Unless you want to finish your trip looking like a much bumpier version of yourself, I highly recommend bringing the strongest insect repellent you can find. In addition, before you head into the Amazon, check around at the local market to see what they use to prevent and treat mosquito bites. You would be surprised at how effective their traditional medicine can be!

14. Saudi Arabia

When many people think of Saudi Arabia, they likely imagine an immense desert. However, this vast country not only offers some of the best snorkeling in Europe and the Middle East just off the coast of Jeddah, but the country’s mountains are also home to a resident population of monkeys that are photographed so frequently that it almost feels like they are starting to become mascots of the country. While the Gulf States are big consumers of meat, it’s still very easy to find vegetarian foods thanks to the influence of the Levant, India, and North Africa.

Located on the far-western reaches of North America, Alaska is a rugged land full of monumental beauty and amazing wildlife. Here, you can see Alaska’s very own “Big Five” including bears, moose, caribou, wolf, and Dall sheep on a wildlife tour. Also, consider going on a whale-watching tour! Many visitors travel to Alaska via cruise ship or go directly to Denali National Park, one of the state’s biggest (literally) treasures, for a self-drive tour of this spectacular landscape. If you’re lucky, you may even see bald eagles swirling lazily through the air high above you.

Alaska is also a great destination for adventure travelers, and you can go hiking, biking, river rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, and dog sledding while you’re there. Best of all, you can access Alaska via seaplane, car, or train which makes this a great destination for many different kinds of travelers!

16. Thailand

With endless opportunities for snorkeling in the south and NGO-based animal sanctuaries in the north, as well as plenty of mouth-watering vegetarian dishes, Thailand is a fabulous country for animal lovers. There are heaps of opportunities for animal encounters such as snorkeling on Phi Phi Island or visiting the Elephant Nature Park, an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center in Chaing Mai.

Expert tip: While Thailand makes for one of the best vacations for animal lovers, it’s important to choose where you spend your money wisely. There are many places that mistreat animals for the benefit of tourists, and sometimes, these masquerade as animal sanctuaries. Make sure to do thorough research about an attraction or destination before visiting and try to book with local operators as much as possible to ensure that the money stays within the local communities.

17. Yellowstone National Park

Located mostly in Wyoming, Yellowstone National Park is a nature lover’s paradise. This massive park features more than 2.2 million acres of untouched wilderness that includes some of the country’s most active geothermal zones, alpine rivers, and dramatic canyons. People travel here in hordes to be able to hike on the many miles of hiking trails, explore its waterfalls, and view the diverse wildlife.

Yellowstone National Park is home to wolverines, bighorn sheep, black bears, white-tailed deer, and mountain goats. However, the most famous local residents are bison. Despite the population being nearly decimated by hunters and poachers at the start of the 20th century, this remarkable herd managed to survive and thrive. Yellowstone is now the only place in the continental United States to have a continuously free-ranging bison population since prehistoric times. Thousands of bison freely roam around the park, and lucky visitors can view these magnificent, and slightly awkward-looking, animals during their visit.

Like Tanzania, Kenya is famous for its Big Five. Although there are small animal reserves found throughout the country, including a strangely-located one right next to the Nairobi Airport, most animal-loving visitors head straight to the Masai Mara National Reserve to get a chance to view their favorite African animals in their natural habitat. These include giraffes, lions, hyenas, elephants, and, my personal favorite, warthogs.

The best time to visit is during the Great Migration when 1.5 million wildebeests make their way from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara. Since this occurs during the dry season, you’re also more likely to see predators which is perfect because the Masai Mara is world-renowned for its big cat population that includes leopards, lions, cheetahs, and more.

There are two ways that you can get to the Masai Mara. The first is via an organized safari which can be pretty pricey. However, this is a great option for first-time visitors who want to be able to relax and enjoy the experience rather than trying to handle the logistical difficulties that traveling throughout Africa can present. If you want to have a bit more of a budget-friendly adventure, you can take public transport to the villages on the outskirts of the park and stay at one of the local lodges there. You can then join one of the day trips that go into the Masai Mara.

19. Mauritius

Although Mauritius isn’t famous for its wildlife like other countries in Africa are, this island nation has a lot to offer animal lovers. There are plenty of options for snorkeling, and it’s possible to take day trips to many of the outlying islands where you can see scores of colorful tropical fish and sea turtles. Sadly, much of the coral in Mauritius is dead, but as you glide through the water, you can see it regaining signs of life.

Pet Cruises: Are There Any Cruise Lines That Allow Pets?

Picture of Erica Silverstein

Erica Silverstein

  • February 10, 2024

Are you dreaming of sipping umbrella drinks on the Lido deck while Fido splashes around in the pool? If so, you must wonder, are any cruise lines allowing pets?

Cunard Queen Mary 2 cruise ship sailing in the water with a city in the background, offering a pet-friendly voyage for travelers desiring cruise lines that allow pets.

Although limited, some cruise lines allow pets, including the Cunard Queen Mary 2, Tallink Silja Line, and DFDS Mini Cruise. Additionally, most cruise lines gladly allow service animals to accompany passengers with disabilities free of charge.

Should you bring your pet along on a cruise, though? Will your pet enjoy their time on the ship? And what are the pros and cons of bringing a pet on a cruise?

Find out all you need to know in our FAQ on cruising with cats and dogs. Keep in mind this article covers pets and not service animals. Service animal policies can be coordinated through the cruise line accessibility department.

Can I Take My Pet Dog or Cat on a Cruise?

Cunard line is one cruise lines that allow pets, both dogs and cats.

The answer is yes . You can take your pet dog or cat on a cruise if you opt for one of the cruise lines that allow pets.

Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 has to be the most notable of the bunch. The pet-friendly transatlantic cruise allows cruisers to take their pet dog or cat on sailings from New York to Southampton or Hamburg, provided they can book a spot in The Kennels, the special pet area on the ship.

Note: No other animals, such as birds or ferrets, are allowed onboard.

The waitlist is incredibly long. Dogs and cats do not cruise free; rates range from $800 to $1,000 for a single kennel and twice that for a double.

A cat is sitting inside a kennel, potentially preparing for a cruise vacation with pet-friendly amenities provided by certain cruise lines.

Pet owners should understand that their cat or dog will not be sleeping in their bed with them. Pets will spend the entire cruise in The Kennels and are not allowed in cabins or public areas of the ship. Owners can visit with their pets only during specified visiting hours.

As a Cunard transatlantic cruise typically has no port calls (or one if your cruise from Hamburg stops in Southampton), you will not have the opportunity to take your pet off the ship for walks on land. Learn more about Queen Mary 2’s kennels and pet policy .

Can You Take Service Dogs on a Cruise?

A dalmatian dog sits on the deck of a pet-friendly cruise ship.

Most cruise lines allow travelers with disabilities to bring service dogs onboard.

A service animal is specifically trained to perform tasks related to helping a human, such as leading a blind person or protecting a person having a seizure. They are working animals — typically dogs — and not pets.

Note that Cunard keeps service dogs separate from its kennel guests. Working animals can’t access The Kennels and their facilities — like how crew get separate dining and lounge spaces from passengers.

Service animals are allowed in cabins and public areas as long as they’re on a leash; however, they’re banned from swimming pools and hot tubs, the ship’s galley, and areas specific to kids or crew.

Unlike pets, service animals cruise for free. If you want to learn more about taking a service dog on a cruise, I recommend checking out Molly Burke’s video about her experience bringing her guide dog along on Celebrity Edge.

What Do I Need to Pack for a Pet or Service Animal on a Cruise?

A dog on a cruise ship.

Cruisers are responsible for bringing pet food and treats, water bowls, leashes, toys, and bedding for their animal. Cunard does provide food for pets cruising in The Kennels.

While Cunard carries life jackets for large and small animals, most other lines do not. If Fifi needs a floatie, you’ll need to pack your own.

Cruise lines will provide a sandbox or area of mulch for a service animal to relieve itself. The animal owner is responsible for cleaning up after his dog, though the crew will clean the relief box daily.

A dog sits on a balcony overlooking the water.

You must alert the cruise line’s access department, often within 30 days of cruising, to request a relief area. Note that the relief box will not be in your cabin or your private balcony, though the crew will try to keep it as close to your accommodations as possible.

Royal Caribbean takes extra care to note that the Central Park area on Oasis-class ships is not an acceptable place for your service dog to relieve itself. People, it’s not like the dog parks at home!

Can Emotional Support Animals Go on Cruises?

No. Because the cruise lines cannot verify that a supposed emotional support animal is a working animal, they do not allow them onboard.

In the past, travelers have tried to sneak their pets onboard in the guise of emotional support animals, forcing cruise lines (and airlines) to make policy changes to ban them.

Should I Take My Dog or Cat on a Cruise?

A siamese cat sits in front of a bowl of food

Just because you can take a pet or service animal on a cruise doesn’t mean you should. Your pet may not enjoy the afternoon tea and ballroom dancing on Cunard as you do and might be sad that it’s spending most of its time away from you in the kennel.

We also read an account of a service animal who refused to relieve itself onboard the cruise ship and would only do so in port.

That meant it suffered an entire sea day without peeing, distressing its owner, who truly cared for his canine companion. Imagine if that had been a transatlantic cruise. You never know in advance how an animal will react to living in the artificial setting of a cruise ship.

A dog enjoying the ocean view

Animal owners should note that cruise lines, including Cunard, do not offer vet services. Should Fluffy or Fido fall ill onboard, you’ll have to wait until a port day to find a vet in a foreign country or hope they can manage until the cruise ends. Do you want to risk your favorite dog or cat in that way?

Finally, individual countries have specific instructions about whether animals can come ashore and what proof of health and vaccination they need to be allowed.

If your animal can’t come ashore, you will be forced to stay onboard; Rover can’t hang out in your cabin watching TV and ordering room service while you go on that sightseeing excursion in port.

We all desire to spend more time with our pets, but because they can’t accompany us everywhere, there are various pet care options to consider when we need to get away.

Are There Cruises for Animal Lovers?

A dog perched on a railing overlooking a red fire hydrant.

Yes. Animal lovers can connect on themed cruises, though Fluffy and Fido will need to remain at home. Options vary yearly, but if you’re in a pet-lovers group, consider getting together to plan an animal-themed vacation at sea.

The Meow Meow Cruise is an annual sailing that attracts cat lovers who enjoy private group dinners, trivia games, cocktail parties, and scavenger hunts. I could not find an existing dog lovers’ cruise, so maybe it’s time for you to organize one!

Cruise Lines That Allow Pets FAQ

Should you cruise with a large dog.

While pet-friendly cruises like Cunard accept dogs of all sizes in their kennels, larger dogs have distinct disadvantages when cruising. Big breeds like Great Danes, Mastiffs, and St. Bernards require two kennels instead of one, which doubles the cost. These dogs have large bladders, making it more challenging to go all day without relief.

How Can I Entertain My Dog on a Cruise?

Dogs left alone in an enclosed kennel all day need mental stimulation and entertainment so they don’t become anxious or bored. You’ll need to pack some puzzle toys, kongs stuffed with peanut butter, rawhides, and chews. Also, bring comfortable bedding that smells like home. Thoughtful preparation is key here!

I recommend asking about scheduling play visits with your pup and the possibility of walks on the deck at specified times. You can also request that the kennel staff pay special attention to your dog if they have difficulty adjusting to the cruise.

The Best Petting Zoos In Florida For Exotic Animals

Animal lovers guide: things to do before going on a cruise.

By Amanda Mesa | Published on November 1, 2022

Florida is best known for its year-round sunshine and blue skies, beautiful white sand beaches, and vibrant cities brimming with culture, nightlife, and theme parks — but did you know that it's also one of the most popular places in the country for one-of-a-kind animal encounters? You don't have to venture into the wild to experience them, either. The best petting zoos in Florida invite guests to get up close with a diverse array of critters, from horses, sheep and miniature donkeys to lemurs, giraffes, wallabies and llamas at some of the state's more exotic petting zoos. For animal lovers traveling on vacation, one of the best things to do before going on a cruise would be having an in person encounter while visiting some of the popular Florida wildlife experiences near your departure port .

Exotic bird at zoo. Florida.

Get Hands-on Experience At Tampa's Best Petting Zoo

Boy petting stingray at zoo. Florida

If you're cruising from Tampa , you'll be conveniently situated to explore one of the best petting zoos in Florida — ZooTampa at Lowry Park. It offers all kinds of incredible, educational experiences, and it's hands-down one of my favorite go-to spots for exotic animal petting zoo encounters. During my last visit, I got to feed lettuce to a giraffe and pet stingrays (spoiler alert — their backs feel a little like sandpaper, but they're extremely gentle). This petting zooin Tampa also offers llama and pony rides, and is home to an aviary where you can watch colorful budgerigars flit among the trees and feed nectar to pretty lorikeets. Kids will love Wallaroo Station, Lowry Park's children's zoo. It features a fun roller coaster and a mini water park that offers little ones refreshing relief from hot summer days. If you visit on a weekend, you can also feed the zoo's white rhinoceros.

ZooTampa at Lowry Park is located at 1101 West Sligh Avenue in Tampa. It's open seven days a week from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., with extended weekend hours in May. Parking is free for all guests. Tickets cost about $45 for adults and $35 for children ages 3 to 11.

Experience Gators And Thrills In Orlando

Alligators at Gatorland. Orlando, Florida.

In addition to seaside fun in the sun and amusement parks, Florida is also well known for its; farms, lakes, swamps, mangroves, and of course the gators that live in them. The aptly named "Gatorland" is by far the ultimate spot to mingle with this iconic reptilian mascot in the Orlando  area. Chock-full of wild rides and attractions, it's one of the best options for thrill-seekers and adventure-chasers. Guests can brave the Screamin' Gator Zip Line, voted the "Best Zip Line in the USA" by AOL Travel (and one of two located at the park), or set out on an exhilarating off-road adventure that offers glimpses of alligators interwoven with fun facts, hilarious jokes and zany characters along the way. Daredevils can sign up for the park's Trainer-for-a-Day program, which lets you get up close with some dangerous yet fascinating critters. You'll get to hold a baby alligator, enjoy hands-on fun with snakes and other reptiles and meet some of the park's biggest crocs and gators on a backstage tour. If you're looking for a tamer petting zoo in Orlando, head to Allie's Barnyard, where you can feed friendly llamas, sheep, deer and other gentle animals.

Gatorland is located at 14501 South Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando. It's open every day from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Parking is free for all guests, and tickets cost about $33 for adults, $23 for children ages 3 to 11 and $32 for seniors aged 60 and older.

Education Tours And More On Your Florida Vacation

Miami vacation traveler with a lemur at a petting zoo. Florida.

Cruising out of Fort Lauderdale ? Head to nearby Happi Farm for a family-friendly experience at one of the best petting zoos in the Fort Lauderdale region. Happi Farm is a non-profit organization that focuses on Animal-Assisted Learning and Equine Therapy to educate and help young people develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially through animal interaction.

Happi Farm is located at 10251 Orange Dr Davie, FL 33328. It's open every day (except Tuesdays) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is only $10 per person.

If your cruise departs from or returns to Miami , Florida, you have every reason to visit Zoological Wildlife Foundation Miami for an exotic petting zoo experience in Miami. Its 5 acres are home to both a regular zoo and hands-on encounters that offer a more unique and intimate experience than many competitors. The company states that its mission is to raise awareness about threatened and endangered species through up-close animal encounters and educational demonstrations. During your visit, you can choose to interact with all kinds of interesting animals through various tailored tours. Residents include marmosets, Capuchin monkeys, two-toed sloths, kinkajou, lemurs, tigers, jaguars and more. Choose from a well-rounded range of tours and experiences, including a primate encounter, an owl encounter, a general wildlife experience, and a VIP meet-and-greet with animals that also includes a catered lunch. If you want to make a lasting impact during your visit, you can also adopt an animal through a donation that will be used to support on-site endeavors, such as building and enhancing enclosures for the facility's furred, feathered and scaled residents.

ZWF Miami is located at 16225 Southwest 172 Ave in Miami. It's open Monday through Sunday by reservation only with tours conducted between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Prices vary by tour.

Explore Melbourne's Eclectic Zoo

Child feeding giraffe in zoo. Florida.

In sunny Melbourne, Florida, you'll find another top option for animal experiences — Brevard Zoo. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, this guest-favorite nonprofit facility encompasses 75 sprawling acres and more than 900 animals from close to 200 species. The zoo's population of critters hails from around the world, including parts of Africa, Asia, South America and Australia. Brevard Zoo is also home to some local animals from right here in Florida, like bobcats, black bears and sandhill cranes. The zoo's Paws On play section is a guest favorite — it boasts a fun-filled water park, an interactive children's playground, a beach cove, a 20,000-gallon aquarium filled with all kinds of fish and, of course, a petting zoo. Stop by to hang with armadillos, pygmy goats, alpacas and special guests that rotate every day. Other notable hands-on experiences at Brevard Zoo include feeding lorikeets in the Lands of Change free-flight aviary, petting giraffes in the Expedition Africa giraffe platform, and brushing majestic rhinos in an unforgettable zookeeper-led experience.

Brevard Zoo is located at 8225 North Wickham Road in Melbourne. It's open daily from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. for non-members (members enjoy early access starting at 9 a.m.). Tickets purchased online cost about $28 for adults, $16 for children ages 3 to 11, and $23 for seniors aged 65 and older. Children under the age of 3 can visit for free.

Dive Deep Into Florida's Aquatic Life

Child swimming and smiling with dolphins. Florida.

Spending a few days in the Keys is one of the best things to do before or after your cruise from Florida for several reasons. I love the laid-back atmosphere, plentiful open-air bars and restaurants, and incredible snorkeling opportunities that exist in Florida's southernmost string of islands. But the Florida Keys are also home to several facilities that allow guests to interact and even swim with dolphins. One of my favorites is the Dolphin Research Center. This nonprofit research facility offers several different programs that bring you up close to these playful, gentle creatures. The Dolphin Encounter is the best, in my opinion. Priced at $210 per person, it includes all-day admission, a theater presentation, and a 20- to 25-minute in-water experience where you can swim with a dolphin and even enjoy a thrilling dorsal pull. The program is open to guests aged 5 years and older. The Dolphin Research Center also offers programs that teach you the basics of training dolphins, allow you to pet and play with them, and even create a work of art with these intelligent aquatic mammals.

The Dolphin Research Center is located at 58901 Overseas Highway on Grassy Key. It's open every day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pricing for dolphin encounters varies by program, but general admission per person is $28 for adults, $23 for children ages 4–12, $25 with a veteran ID and free for children under the age of 3.

Maximize Your Exotic Petting Zoo Tour While In Florida

Toddler boy petting a duckling in the petting zoo. Florida.

As you begin to plan your pre- or post-cruise tour of petting zoos and wildlife facilities in Florida, it's worth keeping in mind that this is a big state. Many of the top exotic petting zoos are spread out from north to south between Miami , Fort Lauderdale , Orlando , and Tampa . Lucky for you, these cities are home to Florida's major ports of call . If your budget and travel schedule allow for it, consider renting a car and adding at least four or five days before or after your cruise in order to really hit all the best petting zoos in Florida.

Fortunately, the state has several large airports, which makes planning a pre- or post-cruise petting zoo adventure easier. If you're sailing to and from Miami, for example, you can fly into or from Orlando International Airport and squeeze in all the cool exotic petting zoos that stretch from south to central Florida — or vice versa.

Ready to start planning your wildlife-filled adventure? The first step is booking the perfect cruise getaway to serve as the centerpiece of your vacation.

The Best Cruises For Animal Lovers

cruise for animal lovers

Ah, classic cruise vacations. Beautiful ports of call; buffet tables covered with cakes, pastries, and pies; and the festive "drink of the day" served on the pool deck. That was then. These days, there's so much more to cruising.

Case in point: one of the best ways to get up close and personal with exotic and wild animals in their natural habitat is by boat. These top 5 cruises will get you within a high-five's distance of some of the world' s most beautiful animals.

Wild Orangutans: Borneo

Borneo, in Southeast Asia, is the largest island on earth and is home to the planet's oldest peat swamp forest. Here, all manner of creatures live in the trees, on land, and in the black water rivers that crisscross the island.

Which cruise? Orion Expedition Cruises

Ports of call: This itinerary begins in Bali and ends in Singapore with stops in Tanjung Putin National Park in Kalimantan, Indonesia as well as Kuching and Bako National Park in Sarawak, Malaysia.

What to watch for: You'll see apes like orangutans and gibbons; monkeys such as proboscis, macaques, and lutungs; Bornean bearded pigs; estuarine crocodiles; and, while rare, it's also possible to spy Asian elephants, Sumatran rhinoceros, Bornean clouded leopard, and sun bears in this region. Borneo is also a bird-watchers paradise. Look out for owl, spiderhunters, drongos, hornbills, and malkohas.

Why now? Illegal logging--most often to make way for lucrative palm oil plantations--has caused the deforestation of thousands of acres of rainforest across Borneo. This has put a tremendous strain on species like the Borneo orangutan and proboscis monkey that live in the trees. Visit Borneo now to show your support and convince the government to aggressively defend its natural resources.

2013 Departures: September 29, October 25, and November 18

Big Five: South Africa

Everyone should set out on an adventure-filled African safari at least once in his or her lifetime. There is something special about climbing into a safari vehicle and off-roading into the bush to get up close to nature's most majestic animals. Safaris in South Africa are also quite civilized with all guides and trackers breaking at sunset to offer guests a gin-and-tonic "sundowner" to bid adieu to another gorgeous day on the savannah.

Which cruise? Silversea Cruises

Ports of call: This 10-day round-trip voyage out of Cape Town, South Africa calls on Port Elizabeth, Richards Bay, Durban, and East London in South Africa as well as Maputo, Mozambique.

What to watch for: Look for the Big Five--lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros--as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, wild dog, hippopotamus, hyena, crocodiles, and more.

Why now? South Africa is the most stable of all African nations today. Many of the locals speak English and the population welcomes visitors. The national parks and private game reserves are well maintained and have been operating for years so the animals living within them are not afraid of people or safari vehicles. This means you'll see more and get closer to these majestic animals than you ever thought possible.

2013 Departures: January 5, 15, 25, and December 21

Whales, Sea Lions, and Bears (Oh My!): Alaska

Alaska is a national treasure. It's easy to get to with many flights connecting via Seattle, is simple to navigate, and is home to a lush landscape that includes glaciers and fjords, forests, and flatlands, and beautiful coves and bays. If you love fishing, Alaska is the place to be.

Which cruise? InnerSea Discoveries

Ports of call: To get the true flavor of Alaska, select an Inside Passage itinerary that travels between Juneau and Sitka. You'll also visit Glacier Bay National Park, Icy Strait, Chicahagof Island, Baranof Island, and Peril Strait.

What to watch for: You'll marvel at whales (orca, beluga, humpback, right, blue, minke, bowhead, and grey), sea lions and sea otters, mountain goats and bears, moose and eagles, and so much more.

Why now? If you're like most Americans, your life is fast paced and you run from one responsibility to another. A trip to Alaska's pristine forests and small towns will slow you down so you can appreciate the beauty of our 49th state.

2013 Departures: Saturday departures from May 18-August 31

Follow Darwin: Galapagos Islands

Despite the popularity of the Galapagos Islands, the area remains largely untouched by modern development. That means the animals are completely unfazed by humans because they don't see us as a threat. You'll be able to walk right up to a seal on the beach or interact with those funny-looking blue-footed boobies.

Which cruise? Lindblad Expeditions

Ports of call: North Seymour, Rabida, Fernandina, Isabela, Santiago, Santa Cruz, and San Cristobal

What to watch for: Animals of note in the Galapagos Islands include blue-footed boobies and penguins, frigate birds and cormorants, giant tortoises and sea turtles, marine and land iguanas, and sea lions and fur seals--to name just a few. Under water you'll view an incredible array of sea life, including white-tipped reef sharks, rays, eels, and more.

Why now? Galapagos National Park has strict guidelines that cruise lines must follow and that means all ships in the area carry less than 100 people and the largest landing party numbers just 16 individuals. This assures you'll see everything you want during your visit. As demand for adventures in the Galapagos increases, regulations will surely tighten to restrict travel further.

2013 Departures: Friday departures year-round (with a few exceptions in May)

Polar Bears: Arctic Circle

Who doesn't want to see polar bears? An Arctic cruise is the easiest way to catch a glimpse of these vital creatures that are fighting for their lives as their icy habitat continues to lose ground due to global climate change. The Arctic region of Norway is also known for its gorgeous snow-capped mountains and ice fields.

Which cruise? Hurtigruten

Ports of call: Try a round-trip voyage out of Spitsbergen, Norway. The ship will head from Longyearbyen to Barentsburg, Spitsbergen National Park, North Svalbard, and Isfjord.

What to watch for: Polar bear, arctic fox, reindeer, walrus, seals (bearded, ringed, harp, and hooded), humpback whales, and white-beaked dolphins are the animals you'll likely see when touring the Arctic.

Why now? Whether or not you believe in global climate change, it's a fact that the polar ice caps are melting. As ice fields melt, the natural habitat for polar bear and other Arctic animals disappears. Visit these lovely cold-weather creatures to get a sense of the challenges they face day to day.

2013 Departures: August 14, 21, and 28

Pack Your Trunk! The 20 Best Vacations for Animal Lovers

Do you love animals? If you’re anything like me, you’ll have at least one (or more) bucket list vacation that involves seeing animals in their natural habitat. Well, you’re about to get a few more! Below, I will tell you about the 20 Best Vacations for Animal Lovers, in no particular order!

We at Fox Travel love animals. Hello! We are called Fox Travel! We also know that sometimes animal encounters are found to be less than ethical. All options below are an ethical, educational, or conservatory way to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

For many of these adventures, some tour offers include:

Either free round-trip air, free one-way air, or an air credit of $500 on certain trips and only from certain gateways. They are also offering free bar tabs and tips on select sailings as well.  Offers are subject to change without notice and vary by supplier or cruise line.

Vacations for Animal Lovers

1. sloths in costa rica.

Sloths are kind of my spirit animal. They’re cute, cuddly, love to sleep a lot, and just hang out. Just one look at a sloth’s adorable face and many people fall in love. Costa Rica is the best place in the world to see a sloth in their natural habitat. But because they are so adept at camouflaging themselves high up in the trees, it might be easier to visit a sloth sanctuary that is on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. Down the road is also a Jaguar sanctuary as well! If you are staying on the Pacific side, don’t worry, you can visit the  Diamante Eco Adventure Park where you’ll be able to see sloths, and many other animals native to Costa Rica, like monkeys, birds, and more close up, or you can even horseback ride through the jungle! So many great animal adventures to have in Costa Rica!

Sloths

2. Howler Monkeys in Belize

You better “Belize” that you’ll find some great options to see animals in this wonderful country! Whether you’re stopping off for the day on your Caribbean cruise from Galveston or staying for a while, there are plenty of options to see animals in their natural habitat. One of the top attractions is to visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary to see Howler Monkeys swinging from tree to tree. You can also see manatees, crocodiles, parrots and other birds, jaguars, and more in Belize.

Howler Monkeys

3. Manatees in Florida

You don’t need to leave the country to see Manatees in their natural habitat. Florida is a great location to see them bobbing in the warm water. Also known as the “Cow of the Sea”, manatees are sweet and sensitive animals. There are many eco-friendly tour options in Florida to see these magnificent animals in their natural habitat.

Manatees

4. Chilling with Penguins in Antarctica

Take a cruise down to Antarctica and walk among thousands of Gentoo, Chin Strap, and Adelie penguins. Many cruise lines are now making this popular trek down to Antarctica but for a more “natural” experience, I would choose a cruise with Lindblad and Natural Geographic Expeditions . This will give you a truly unique perspective on the life of an Antarctic penguin.

Penguins

5. Exotic Elephants of Thailand

For many people riding on elephants on the beach in Thailand is a dream vacation. However, many animal lovers are finding out that the conditions for these wonderful creatures are less than ideal. Don’t worry though, there are still plenty of ethical options to interact with elephants in Thailand! Many of these tour options are elephant sanctuaries, and while they don’t let you ride on them, you can help hand-feed them, and even take them down to the river and bathe them. How cool is that?

Elephants

6. Animals of Alaska

Our backyard holds many amazing opportunities to see animals in their natural habitat. One of the best places to see a wide variety of animals is Alaska . Interact with Sled Dogs, watch many different species of bears graze in the forest, see bald eagles soar over the Alaskan wilderness, moose, caribou, and bison on land. Alaska is also a great place to go whale watching during the summer. On a cruise or a whale-watching expedition, you can see humpback whales, blue whales, orcas, sea lions, seals, and more. Not only do you get to see all these amazing animals up close, but you also get to be in one of the most beautiful untouched wildernesss in America. It’s a win/win.

Orcas

7. Unique Animals of the Galapagos Islands

Made famous by Charles Darwin’s study of plants and animals and his theory of natural selection, the Galapagos Islands are teeming with species found only on these tiny islands. Because of this, it is considered one of the world’s foremost destinations for animal viewing. Some of the more famous residents unique to these islands are the Galapagos tortoise with a lifespan of 170 years, the only living Marine Iguana left on earth, Galapagos finches which played a huge role in Darwin’s theory, the Galapagos penguin the smallest and only penguin north of the equator, and much more.

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Galapagos

8. Exotic Animals of Indonesia

Animal lovers will love this trip. Indonesia is a group of islands that make up an area south of the Philippines and north of Australia. Some of the more well-known islands are Sumatra, Java, and New Guinea. These islands hold some of the rarest and most endangered species in the world. Animals like the Sumatran Tiger, Orangutan, Javan Rhino, and the Komodo Dragon to name a few, are extremely endangered and very rare. There are many tour companies, like National Geographic , that will take you to Indonesia and try to get you the opportunity to see these beautiful animals up close.

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Orangutans

9. Polar Bears in Canada

While Polar Bears live in many northern polar countries like Norway and Russia, one of the easiest locations to see them, for Americans, is Churchill, Canada. Up here you will be able to see the largest bear and the largest land carnivore in the world. While visiting this snowy Tundra, you will also have a chance to do a dog sledding excursion and see the Arctic fox, arctic wolves, reindeer, and more.

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Polar Bears

10. Safari in Africa

Probably one of the most popular and well-known vacations to see animals is doing an African Safari. Here you will be able to see many different species of animals all in the same day. You can even camp out in the wilderness with the animals all around you! Not a fan of camping? Many luxury hotels will still allow you to get in on the animal action. Here you can see African elephants, giraffes, rhinos, lions, cheetahs, and more. Some of our favorite vendors for an African Safari are Abercrombie & Kent, and Micato Safaris

11. Pups on the beach in Hawaii

When on vacation, do you miss your furry friend which could be staying on one of those WoofConnect home dog boarding services? Don’t worry, on Kauai you can “rent a dog” from the local shelter for the time of your stay. What happens if you fall in love? They will help you bring your new puppy pal back to the States with you!

Other animals to see in Hawaii are dolphins, sea turtles, whales, sharks, and more! Hawaii is a beautiful tropical destination with much more to offer than just lounging on the beach. Can’t decide which Hawaiian island to visit? We’ve got your back!

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Hawaii

12. Close encounters of the toothy kind in the Bahamas

One of the most popular excursions for animal lovers to do here is swim with the sharks! Many people flock to this area for the chance to swim and even feed sharks while scuba diving. The Bahamas has the largest population of sharks anywhere in the Caribbean. From the Caribbean and blacktip reef sharks to tiger and nurse sharks, there are sharks here for everyone. For the more timid try nurse sharks (I mean, you are still pretty brave for swimming with sharks) to the adventurous, swim with those large tiger sharks! If swimming with sharks is not your thing, you can also swim with… Pigs? Yup! I said pigs! There is a small island that is inhabited by little piggies that just love to swim with tourists.

An oceanic sight sure to captivate animal lovers: a swimming pig.

13. It’s Panda-monium in China

One of the cutest, most lovable creatures in the world has to be a Panda Bear. Just watch a video of a panda and you will see this silly personality shine through. Although you can see pandas in Zoos around the world, China is the only place to see these animals in the wild. You will be trekking through a huge jungle to try to find them, so it is probably better if you visit them at a breeding center instead where they work around the clock to help bring these wonderful creatures back from the brink of extinction.

Vacations for Animal Lovers

14. Hop on over to Australia

Many people know the 2 most popular animals in Australia, the kangaroo and koala. Australia is a great place to visit if you have people in your group who aren’t super interested in spending your entire vacation looking at animals (who are these people anyway?). There are a ton of super fun activities to do in many of the great cities, but this blog is about animals. Take a hike in the bush to see many of Australia’s unique animals, many found only there, in their natural habitat.

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Koala

15. Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone is known for its natural beauty, but there are a ton of animals to see here like bison, moose, wolves, bighorn sheep, bears, mountain lions, and more. This is another animal gem right in our backyard. Yellowstone is a must-see for any nature and animal lover. Another location where you can either camp or stay in a hotel, Yellowstone makes for a great vacation for all. But what am I saying, check out any of our amazing national parks to see unique wildlife all over the USA.

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Yellowstons

16. Wild Horses in Maryland

Did you know there is a beach in Maryland and Virginia that is teaming with wild horses? These wild horses are now used by people since the beach makes for a popular hangout for both people and horses, but they are still wild. Some though may even let you pet them. Horse lovers are animal lovers too! If you’re one of them, you may also visit sites like All About Horses to further educate yourself about horses.

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Wild Horses

17. Horseback ride through the Irish countryside

Take it from a person who has grown up riding. Riding a horse through the Irish countryside is probably one of the best animal experiences I have had. There is something pretty magical about Ireland, but seeing the country on horseback is pretty spectacular. This is another great location to visit for a unique animal experience, but it still, has plenty to do for those who don’t want to spend their entire vacation with animals.

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Ireland

18. Gorillas in the Mist

While you are on your African safari, take a side trip to Rwanda, Uganda, or Kenya to see Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat. This is a must-do for all animal lovers while in Africa. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a gorilla in these mountains, mainly because their territory is so large, and you have to go on foot. These beautiful and intelligent creatures are endangered, so if these guys are on your bucket list, I would plan your trip soon!

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Gorilla

19. Hang out with Japanese Snow Monkeys

You’ve seen these guys hanging out in the hot springs in snowy Kyoto, Japan, which is about a five-hour drive from Tokyo. These characters love to bathe and swim in these pools, and they are so much fun to watch. Again, Japan makes for a great destination for those who want to do other activities as well.

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Japanese Snow Monkey

20. Scuba Dive

If you have never been scuba diving or even snorkeling, then you won’t understand when someone says that being 50 feet underwater is as close to being in a different world as possible. Some of my most memorable animal lover encounters happened while scuba diving. The best part about scuba diving is you can pretty much dive anywhere with water, even lakes! There is so much life teeming underneath the waves that will blow you away. From the very small fish, shrimp, and crabs, to the largest turtles, whales, whale sharks, dolphins, and sharks, you will see something new every time you dive. If you happen to go diving during whale watching season, you can hear the whales calling from miles away, it’s a pretty incredible adventure for animal lovers.

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Scuba Dive

Remember, animal lovers, no matter where you go or whatever animals you see, please remember that these are wild animals. They are adapted to life in their area; please don’t handle, feed, or interfere with any animal in the wild. While your intentions may be good, it could negatively impact them. And please, if you want to take a picture with or of an animal, ensure you are at a safe distance.
