Plucked from obscurity during the early days of the Red Sea’s tourism drive, the fishing village of Hurghada has long since morphed into today’s dense band of concrete that marches along the coastline for more than 20km. Still, it's a convenient destination for combining a diving holiday with the Nile Valley sites. Further offshore there is still superb diving aplenty; local NGOs are helping the town clean up its act, and the southern resort area and Sigala's sparklingly modern marina have brought back some of Hurghada's sheen.

13 Top-Rated Things to Do in Hurghada

Written by Jess Lee Updated Dec 27, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Hurghada is Egypt's oldest and most famous resort.

Offshore is the colorful underwater spectacle of the Red Sea's world of coral and fish life that first brought Hurghada to worldwide attention.

Back on solid ground, the once-tiny fishing settlement of Hurghada has mushroomed into a resort city with attractions and amenities that cater directly to tourists.

For northern Europeans (who make up most of Hurghada's tourism influx) this is one of the best places to visit for a winter sun-and-sea escape, with sandy white beaches and blue skies in abundance throughout the year.

But while Hurghada's main tourist attraction tends to be flopping on the beach, there are plenty more things to do, both in the water and on dry land, for travelers who want a taste of adventure.

For ideas, see our list of the top tourist attractions in Hurghada.

Beach at Hurghada

Hurghada's best patches of sand have all been claimed by the shore-side resorts that stretch along the coast, both north and south of town.

Even if you're not staying in one of the hotels, nearly all of the resorts offer day access to non-guests.

To really sample Hurghada's beach life, though, you should book yourself in for a few nights of resort living. Hurghada has beautiful all-inclusive resorts for the perfect getaway.

The best beaches lie south of the main town area, which is called Sigala .

From here, the main resort area begins sprawling for kilometers down the coast. The areas known as Sahl Hasheesh (18 kilometers south of Hurghada Airport) and Makadi Bay (30 kilometers south of Hurghada Airport) are home to some of the Red Sea coastline's prime pieces of white-sand beach and best hotels.

Giftun Islands

The Giftun Islands are one of Hurghada's most popular boat excursions, with prime swaths of white sand to soak up the rays and snorkeling opportunities galore on offer.

For those who aren't scuba diving enthusiasts, the easily-accessed coral reefs in the area surrounding the island shore are an excellent taster of the Red Sea's beauty.

During the height of tourism season, when dozens of boats descend on the islands daily, treat a Giftun Islands trip solely as a beach trip, as the crowds scare off any sea life.

In quieter periods, while paddling close to shore, you could spot colorful fish flitting through the clear water,

Those not interested in underwater exploits can simply claim a palm-frond shelter on the beach, sit back, and enjoy the sun.

Diver photographing a wreck in Abu Nuhas

Egypt's Straits of Gubal, a narrow strip of water squeezed between the Red Sea coast and the western shore of the Sinai Peninsula, is one of the Red Sea's major diving destinations and is easily accessed from Hurghada.

This area is known chiefly for its wreck diving and is home to The Thistlegorm (a WWII cargo ship rediscovered by French diver Jacques Cousteau), renowned as one of the world's top wreck dive sites.

Accessed by liveaboard from Hurghada, The Thistlegorm is easily the Straits of Gubal's most popular dive site, but divers who want to explore farther will find plenty of other opportunities to dive.

One of the most rewarding diving areas in the Straits of Gubal is Abu Nuhas , within dive-boat day-trip distance from Hurghada.

This area around Shadwan Island in the Straits is home to six separate dive sites with several wrecks.

The main attraction is the wreck of the Carnatic , a UK cargo ship sunk in 1869, which is still in incredibly good condition, with its skeletal remains home to flourishing coral and abundant fish life.

The Greek ship Chrisoula K (sunk in 1981) and the German Kimon M (sunk in 1978) are two more popular wreck dives in this area, with plenty of opportunities to spot lionfish, triggerfish, and pipefish among the wreckage.

Four-wheel drive expedition in the desert

With so much action happening in the water, some travelers forget that back onshore there's an entire desert world to explore.

Among Hurghada's most popular on-the-ground things to do are quad biking, Jeep expeditions, and dune buggy trips into the sand dune hinterland.

You don't have to travel very far off-road from the resort town to discover the acacia tree studded wadis (valleys), sandwiched in by red-tinged mountains, that make up most of the landscape of the Eastern Desert.

A popular way to experience this desert hinterland is on the five-hour quad bike safari in Hurghada , which includes a break at a Bedouin village and a camel ride.

Gota Abu Ramada dive site

Also known as "The Aquarium," Gota Abu Ramada is a dive site with huge amounts of marine life and a coral garden of pinnacles.

One of the most popular dive sites near Hurghada, it is used by many dive operators as a try-dive site for novice divers. If you're in Hurghada to learn to dive, you will likely be spending some time here.

For more advanced and experienced divers, the huge variety of sea life is the main attraction.

Triggerfish, lionfish, and clownfish are always whizzing through the ethereal blue waters here, and many divers also manage to glimpse the resident eagle rays.

Hurghada Marina

Hurghada Marina is a rather swish and modern addition to the central district of Sigala. Since it opened, it has become one of the city's major dining destinations and comes alive after dark.

Head here at sunset to promenade next to the Red Sea or sit back with a tea and sheesha (waterpipe) at one of the cafés, while soaking up the last of the evening light. Afterwards, stay on to dine at one of the restaurants here, which offer a range of cuisines from classic Egyptian dishes to international fare .

Dining with views over the bobbing yachts and the Red Sea stretching to the horizon can't be beaten.

Address: Hurghada Marina Promenade, Sigala

Colorful fish in the Red Sea at Hurghada

The best underwater sites of Hurghada's coastline can only be accessed by diving. If diving isn't for you, though, there are still plenty of shallow reefs that can be experienced by snorkeling.

The area surrounding the Gifton Islands is one of the most popular places to visit for snorkeling.

Trips such as this Red Sea snorkeling trip stop on the main Gifton Island for swimming and sunbathing before heading on to two nearby reefs for snorkeling. It includes pickup and drop-off from your Hurghada hotel and a full-day boat trip, with lunch. There is plenty of time for relaxation on board as well.

El Gouna Marina

El Gouna is a purpose-built resort town just 27 kilometers north of central Hurghada , so it is easily visited on a day trip from the city.

It's known for its water sports offerings, particularly kitesurfing and wakeboarding, as well as operators offering scuba diving and sailing.

Specialty kitesurfing centers offer both kitesurfing lessons, multi-day courses, and equipment rental on Mangroovy Beach here.

At the southern end of the resort town is Sliders Cable Park, one of the world's biggest cable parks and a major addition to any wakeboarder's list of things to do if they're in the Hurghada area.

El Gouna is also one of Egypt's top golfing destinations with two world-class courses: one 18-hole course, and another that's currently 9 holes but is slated to be extended to 18 holes.

There are excellent modern international dining options here around El Gouna's marina, so it's also a great choice for an evening visit.

Bedouin Dinner Tours

For a night away from the hotel, one of the most popular evening tourist attractions in the Hurghada area are the Bedouin dinner tours offered by many of the resorts.

For foodie travelers this is a must-do for the chance to sample the wholesome Egyptian dishes that never make it onto restaurant menus.

Tours, which sometimes include a camel ride, head out into the desert or to nearby Bedouin settlements to feast on flavorful local cooking while reclining on colorful cushions in a traditional Bedouin tent setting.

It's an atmospheric way to be introduced to Egypt's wonderful array of home-style cooking.

Sindbad Submarine

Hurghada's Sindbad Submarine offers the opportunity of seeing some of the Red Sea's famed underwater sights without getting your feet wet.

This tourist submarine is the only one operating in the Red Sea.

It delves below the Red Sea's surface to a depth of 22 meters, so passengers can glimpse the abundant flitting reef fish that inhabit the reefs of colorful soft corals.

Submarine trips take about one hour , and although they don't go very far offshore where the better coral reefs can be viewed, for non-swimmers, it provides an opportunity to see the magical world below the sea's surface, which the Red Sea is so renowned for.

Camel rides

Whether you want to go for a short stroll along the beach (great for the kids) or are looking for a longer one- or two-hour ride into the desert, all of Hurghada's resorts offer a chance to sample camel riding.

Longer trips usually head out to one of the Bedouin settlements not far from town and offer a chance to see the desert landscape, backed by the Red Sea coast's craggy mountains, from the high saddle.

All are guided by Bedouin camel-men, so you don't have to stress about skittish camels suddenly shooting off into a gallop, and you can simply sit back and enjoy the views.

Hurghada's twinkling city lights may scupper any plans of sky-watching while inside the town itself, but one of the most popular nighttime attractions for visitors here are the astronomical night tours, where your nighttime focus is entirely on the star-studded desert sky of your dreams.

Trips journey out of the city after dusk and into the lonely desert, where you'll spend an evening looking up into the wonders of the night sky with a telescope on hand for closer inspection.

With the incredible clear skies in this part of the world, it's one of the best chances most people have of witnessing the full beauty of the stars.

Hurghada Aquarium

If you've been out snorkeling or diving and want to identify what you've seen, then Hurghada Aquarium in the northern part of the central town area (known as Ad-Dahar) can help you out.

These days, the aquarium is showing its age and could do with an update, but it still has the only decent display of Red Sea marine life in the Hurghada area.

For non-swimmers, it's also a good chance to see the many different varieties of the Red Sea's abundant fish life up close, though to see them in a natural habitat, you'd be better off buying a ticket for the Sindbad Submarine.

Luxury Hotels:

  • South of town, the Baron Palace Sahl Hasheesh is a luxury beachfront resort with a sprawling pool and multiple restaurants. For families, the animation team and kids' club make this a good choice.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • The Sunrise Garden Beach Resort is an all-inclusive resort with a good strip of beachfront and plenty of things to do for those who want to do more than soak up the sun. Amenities and activities include a water park, wonderful spa, and tennis courts, plus horseback riding and archery.
  • The affordable, all-inclusive Jaz Makadi Saraya Resort is another good choice for a range of activities, with its own aqua park, tennis court, spa treatments, and dive center.

Budget Hotels:

  • In El Gouna, north of Hurghada, Cook's Club El Gouna has a great location on the central lagoon, comfortable rooms, an inviting pool, and a strip of private beach.

15 Best Things to Do in Hurghada, Egypt

Table of Contents

1. Enjoy the Beaches

The beaches are always one of the best things to do in Hurghada because after all, this is a beach resort town.

Hurghada grew from being a sleepy little fishing village into a tourist hub on the Red Sea, because all along the coast, you can find long stretches of gorgeous white sands.

If you’re staying at a resort, then most of the hotels open out onto the beaches, but there are plenty of great public beaches to visit as well.

The Old Vic Beach is a favorite, while the Sheraton Hotel has one of the finest stretches of sand in front of it.

If you have your own vehicle though, then just drive north or south from Hurghada and you’ll be able to find your own empty beach without too much trouble!

2. Visit the Hurghada City Centre and Corniche

Hurghada was only founded at the turn of the 20th century, and it only began to be developed as a beach resort destination in more recent decades.

That means that there isn’t much in the way of history or traditional tourist sites to be found in Hurghada, but it doesn’t mean that it’s not a lively place to explore

The city center is full of local cafes, shisha bars, and shops, while if you head to the Hurghada Corniche and the Marina, you’ll be able to walk uninterrupted along the seafront, with sweeping views over the Red Sea.

Experience the sights of Hurghada on this 3-hour private tour . Traveling between sites by air-conditioned vehicle, visit the beautiful Big Mosque, Church of St Mary, and scenic port area.

Stop midway for a delicious lunch and finish with free time to haggle for souvenirs in Hurghada’s colorful souks.

3. Shop the Hurghada Markets and Souks

Hurghada is also a great place for shopping, or at least, for souvenir shopping. While the markets aren’t quite as big as those you’ll find in Cairo, they are much easier to navigate here.

You can find shops and vendors selling everything from Egyptian headscarves – you will need these if you’re heading into the desert! – to shisha pipes that you can take home with you.

You can haggle and joke with the shopkeepers – yes, haggling is mandatory here, if you don’t want to pay the highest prices! Then you can relax in a local cafe, enjoy fresh juices, or teas and coffees after you’ve made a few purchases.

4. Go to the Marine Museum and Aquarium

The Hurghada Marine Museum and Aquarium offers you the chance to get close to the underwater world of the Red Sea, without ever having to get wet.

If snorkeling or diving isn’t your thing then this is definitely the best way to learn more about the incredible level of biodiversity waiting beneath the waves.

You can stroll through underwater tunnels, turn up at feeding time to see a frenzy, and learn more about the aquarium and the marine life on guided tours all through the day.

5. Spend a Day in the Giftun Islands

One of the best things to do in Hurghada is to visit the beautiful Giftun Islands.

Located just a short boat ride away from the Marina, this small collection of offshore islands is perhaps the most spectacular natural feature in the area.

The rugged islands are surrounded by crystal clear water that shimmers turquoise in the bright sunlight. You can lounge on the beach, hike across the rocky plateaus, and you can snorkel the coral reefs.

You can join organized excursions from Hurghada that will take you island hopping, dropping you off on the best beaches or simply letting you out in the Red Sea at the best snorkeling spots.

Head out on the waters of the Red Sea on a full-day snorkeling tour from Hurghada .

You’ll travel by boat toward Giftun Island, where you can jump in to swim and snorkel with the native marine life. Lunch will also be provided on board.

6. Go Scuba Diving

One of the best things to do in Hurghada is Scuba Diving. Indeed, for many tourists, Scuba Diving is the main reason that they come to Hurghada, and many return year after year once they’ve had their first taste of the Red Sea.

There is a huge range of dive sites along the coast, making Hurghada perfect for divers of all abilities. It’s a great place to learn too.

Many of the resorts have dive schools and swimming pools on-site where you can do the theory and the training before heading out into the open ocean.

Once you’re qualified, there are shallow dives you can reach by walking straight off the beach. There are also deeper wall dives that drop off out in the Red Sea and there are excellent specialty dives if you’re more advanced, including night dives and wreck dives.

Discover the Red Sea’s spectacular visibility and vibrant marine life with this comprehensive package.

Qualified scuba divers can enjoy two dives , accompanied by an instructor, at sites like Abu Ramada, Small Giftun, or Umm Gamar. Non-divers are welcome to come along and stay on the boat.

7. Enjoy the Amazing Snorkeling

If you’re not a qualified diver or just want a more relaxed time on the water, then there are plenty of great snorkeling opportunities along the coast too.

In fact, some of the best dive sites are coral reefs which are just a few meters underwater and that means that you can just as easily snorkel them as you can dive them.

You’ll be impressed by the biodiversity of the Red Sea and the clarity of the water. Walk-in off the beaches to the shallow reefs or take a boat ride out to beautiful snorkeling spots such as the Giftun Islands.

Discover an Egyptian island paradise on a full-day tour from Hurghada to Giftun Island National Park , and enjoy sun, sand and world-class snorkeling.

Watch for dolphins during the 45-minute ride from the coast, then slip into the water to explore a thriving reef system.

Snorkel alongside bright fish and vibrant coral in the protected area, and pause for a scenic picnic lunch onboard your boat.

Head to shore to check out Giftun Island’s many active options, keep exploring the reef or simply soak up the sun before returning to Hurghada.

8. Dive on Shipwrecks

If you’re an advanced diver though then one of the best things to do in Hurghada is to dive the shipwrecks.

Due to the strategic location of the Red Sea and its use as a shipping channel, wrecks abound here.

The most impressive is the wreck of the Thistlegorm, a supply ship that was sunk during World War II.

9. Try Some Watersports

As well as underwater activities, Hurghada is a hot spot for other watersports too. At the resorts and the beaches, you can hire out everything from jet skis to banana boats, to add a little bit of excitement to your beach holiday.

Hurghada is also a great place for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and parasailing too, and you can take lessons on the Red Sea or easily hire out equipment for the day.

You’ll also be able to organize private tours, you can rent kayaks and canoes, or you can just hire out a sun lounger and do nothing at all!

Cruise over the Red Sea to spot and swim with wild dolphins, and ride a banana boat on this full-day trip from Hurghada .

Sail to the Dolphin House, an area known for its high density of wild dolphins. While you’re here, snorkel around the fish-filled corals or sunbathe on deck—the choice is yours.

10. Try Quad Biking in the Desert

The mostly flat deserts that spread inland from the rugged and rough coastline are the perfect terrain for quad biking.

Quad bikes are easy to handle and you don’t need any previous experience to drive them. You can join the regular tours that head out into the desert, searching out hidden canyons or hurtling over sand dunes.

Go 4-wheeling in the Sahara Desert and visit a Bedouin village on a 5-hour quad bike experience from Hurghada with a private guide .

Get a taste of Egypt’s traditional desert culture by learning how to ride a camel, tasting local food and taking in a colorful evening performance.

11. Take a Desert Safari

If you want to travel further afield into the deserts and empty spaces that are found in Egypt, then you can join a Desert Safari.

Strap in tight as you’re thrown around on the off-road tracks and sand dunes in the back of a four by four.

12. Book a Bedouin Dinner

If you have a newfound appreciation for the desert lifestyle, then one way to learn more about the region’s oldest inhabitants is to join a Bedouin Dinner tour.

Head into the vastness of the Egyptian desert, as you journey to a Bedouin Camp hidden in the sands.

This is one of the best things to do in Hurghada, and you’ll spend the evening in the desert, eating in the company of Bedouin nomads, as you learn more about their cultures and more about the desert.

13. Enjoy an Astronomy Tour

Out in the vastness of the desert, you’ll quickly realize that at night time, it might be cold, but it’s beautiful.

The skies are incredibly dark once you get out of sight of the towns and resorts on the coast, and one of the best things to do in Hurghada is to join an Astronomy Tour out into the desert.

Learn about the different constellations and learn how the Bedouin would find their way using the stars.

14. Brave a Submarine Tour

One of the more unique things to do in Hurghada is to go on a Submarine Tour.

If you want to enjoy the beauty of the underwater world but don’t feel comfortable snorkeling or diving, then Hurghada’s very own Submarine gives you the chance to get face to face with the fish.

Join this fun submarine tour for a fantastic excursion underwater . You can clearly see, film and photograph the Red Sea’s most famous corals, fish, and other marine life. Through large panoramic windows and in your personal swiveling chair you surely won’t miss a thing!

15. Hit the Nightclubs

Egypt might be a Muslim nation, but that doesn’t mean that the locals don’t enjoy a good party every now and then!

In fact, you’ll be surprised to find that Hurghada is full of bars and Nightclubs, and they aren’t just aimed at the tourists either.

This is Egypt’s premier nightlife spot and it’s a great place to party and to hit up the night clubs after a day of exploring, or even after a day of doing nothing at all!

travel guide hurghada

Hurghada ( Arabic: الغردقة el-ğarda’a ) is a resort town on the Red Sea Coast of Egypt . Famous for its superb diving opportunities, Hurghada is especially appealing to those with little experience of scuba diving, who come to marvel at the underwater reefs and awesome marine life.

Understand [ edit ]

Hurghada was once a fairly small and unimposing fishing village, next to the Red Sea. It has a number of superb beaches. Today, the resort of Hurghada is almost unrecognizable from its past life and has become a major destination in Egypt for budget tourists especially from Europe and Russia. It has more than 100 hotels, many of which line the shoreline, and numerous flights particularly from airports across Europe.

Tourism is now a huge part of Hurghada and each year, many tourists choose to combine their holiday here with visits to other prominent locations along the Nile Valley, including the relatively nearby city of Luxor .

Climate [ edit ]

The climate is very dry and rainfall is very rare. The weather is very hot in summer days and quite hot in summer nights. In winter the weather is generally warm by day but cool by night. Hurghada can be downright cold when the Shamal wind blows down from the northeast.

Orientation [ edit ]

Miles and miles and miles of concrete, much of it abandoned developments, mar the shoreline. The oldest, most Egyptian part of the city is 27.25233 33.81475 1 Ad-Dahar to the north, with relatively limited tourist facilities. This is separated by a low dusty ridge from 27.22642 33.83814 2 Sigala 4 km south. Sigala is the main downtown strip, with western and traditional restaurants, hotels and general facilities, and has the most buzz about it. Several boat and dive operators run from the marina here. The main drag of Sheraton Road continues south along the coast for 4 km to the disused Sheraton Hotel, a circular 1970s concrete hulk. The road now enters the Village Resort strip, with another rash of hotels.

The coral reefs around Hurghada are several miles offshore, unlike the Sinai resorts and Jordan where they hug the coast, so divers and snorkelers will need to take a boat trip to enjoy them. Arid islands dot the sea. The largest is Big Giftun, which has a beach club and (better still) cellphone towers - so mobile reception is good out on the water, to the benefit of skippers and trippers.

Modern developers have kind of given up on Hurghada, and have built glossy new resorts further away, notably El Gouna 20 km north, Makadi Bay 30 km south, and Safaga 50 km south. These all use Hurghada airport as their entry point.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

Hurghada has frequent direct international flights from Europe including Russia, Turkey, the Gulf states, and the Far East, e.g. Bangkok. Most of these travellers are on package tours of Egypt - but not all, as the operators also sell flight-only tickets, a cheap and convenient way to get in. Coming from Rome or Budapest there are ultra low-cost flights operated by the airline WizzAir.

Domestic flights link Hurghada frequently to Cairo, and daily to Alexandria and Sharm el-Sheikh. These are a good way to travel as Hurghada is backed by an awful lot of desert, and road transport to other cities is lengthy, hot, dusty, bumpy and not entirely safe. The main domestic operator is Egyptair, but Nile Air and Al Masria compete on the Cairo route and keep fares low.

The package operators (e.g. TUI) also fly domestic legs, but these are to move their own clients around Egypt and are not available to book point-to-point.

There is free Wifi for 15 min. After that duration you need to pay to continue.

In the arrivals area you can buy a SIM card with lots of mobile data for good prices. More details about the mobile network providers in the Egypt article.

There is no local bus or microbus departing from the airport. Package tourist arrivals will have their own bus awaiting, everyone else uses an Uber/Careem, taxi or walks out of the airport. The walking distance to the highway is 1.3 km or 15 min and it's barely shaded. At the highway you can stop a microbus and ask, if it heads to your direction.

The airport is about 8 km west of the Hurghada resort strip and 10 km to the Hurghada district Sigala. Taxi fares are high for these short distances. You could easily be paying LE200. In December 2022 a taxi driver haggled himself down to LE100 to the marina of Hurghada. Careem to Soma Bay is LE220 (Oct 2018). The regular fare towards the airport is much cheaper. Drivers pay LE35 to enter and wait within the airport: naturally they seek to recover this from both the inbound and the outbound traveller. Otherwise, just walk to the highway and catch a taxi there. There is an LE50 toll on the highway south to Safaga (Oct 2018) that is included in fares.

Getting back to the airport is possible by Uber/Careem, taxi or walking. For the latter take a microbus that goes to the Total gas station near the airport. At the police checkpoint you may need to show your passport, flight reservation and may need to undertake a small security check. The departure hall of the airport is upstairs.

By bus [ edit ]

The bus operators have different bus stations:

  • 27.23818 33.83195 2 Go Bus Station ( about 1 km north of High Jet ). Many destinations—check their website. The GoBus website allows you to purchase return tickets on all routes direct to your mobile phone as an e-ticket which is very convenient - you just need to set up an account to do this and foreign tourists are welcome on all services provided you are not travelling on restricted roads. Between Cairo, Luxor and Hurghada is perfectly fine. ( updated Dec 2022 )
  • 27.240865 33.827624 3 Super Jet Bus Station . The buses have a golden color with red stripes. 'Super Jet' is written in small letters on the bus. ( updated Dec 2022 )
  • 27.22847 33.83599 4 High Jet Bus Station (to/from Cairo) . It covers travel to/from Cairo (6-7 hr). Reserving tickets is barely necessary, considering the frequency of the buses. The buses are not that comfortable, and they have loud and annoying soap operas running in the bus during the whole journey. So, it is probably not a good idea to take a night bus. From Cairo: every 2-3 hr between 8AM-2:30AM. To Cairo: every 2-3 hr between 7AM-3AM. About LE210 ( updated Dec 2022 )

Cairo – The trip usually takes approximately 7 hr depending on the operator. Known operators include the Super Jet (ph. 16108), Go Bus (ph. 19567) and HighJet. There are a number of stations which include one behind Cairo railway station Ahmed Helmy . There are many price options starting from LE210 and rising to LE320, every hour you can find bus to Hurghada (avoid MCV Co). In Medan El Giza in northwestern Cairo often extremely crowded, or Almaza Station in the Heliopolis district in northeastern Cairo. Bus schedules often change, but if you go to the bus station without booking you'll find many options. (updated Dec 2022)

Alexandria – There are 2 buses from Alexandria to Hurghada. The first one, Upper Egypt Bus Co., leaves at 6:30PM from the new bus station, and costs LE90. It arrives at Hurghada about 4:30AM. It is not recommended because you'll find all the city in deep sleep and seems like ghost city. The second bus, Super Jet Co., leaves the new bus station at 8:30PM and costs LE95. It arrives in the morning so you can find public transport and the taxis. (February 2012)

Qena and Luxor – About 4-5 hr by bus. Go Bus has two daily buses at 8:15AM and 3:30PM to and from Luxor from LE90. If you're looking at the GoBus site on a mobile device, you may not be able to find listings for Luxor—try a laptop or desktop view .

Upper Egypt Bus Co. runs between Hurghada, Safagah, Luxor and Aswan.

Aswan – There's one transport company to the Red Sea, Upper Egypt Bus Co. The buses are new, the ticket costs LE50 (maybe you pay extra LE5 as a foreigner). There are 2 buses: 3:30PM and 5:30PM. The trip takes 8 hours or more, which means you'll arrive in Hurghada after midnight. (February 2012)

By taxi [ edit ]

Long-distance "servees" taxis run from Hurghada bus station in El Hegaz Street (which you can reach by bus 4 or 7, or by local taxi). These run to all major cities in Egypt, but consider them especially for the run to Luxor, where the time saved by flying is less compelling.

With 2 or 3 of you, you could negotiate a private long-distance taxi; again, the journey to Luxor works well this way. And unlike a "servees", the driver will pause at antiquities and photo opportunities on the way.

By boat [ edit ]

Ferry services between Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh , on the Sinai peninsula, were suspended in 2010, and no resumption is in sight.

A fast-cat ferry runs between Safaga, 50 km south of Hurghada, to Diba (or Duba) in Saudi Arabia. As this route carries a lot of pilgrims and trucking, it's not been hit by the tourist downtown. You'll need to have sorted your Saudi visa well in advance.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

By micro bus [ edit ]

A swarm of white minibuses (Toyota Hiace) called micro bus serve the area, with a flat fare of LE2–3 (Dec 2022). They run fixed routes, mostly along the coastal strip, picking up and dropping off anywhere along the way. Ask around for your destination before getting in - if it's not this bus, it's probably the next one already pulling up. They're cramped and crowded, and young women may have to ward off pests.

Slightly larger minibuses or small regular buses run frequently along the coastal highway to El Gouna and Safaga.

By e-hailing [ edit ]

Uber and Careem operate in Hurghada. They are reasonably priced and convenient, sparing you the incessant haggling required for taxi rides. 4km of driving cost about LE20 (Dec 2022).

Some locations (e.g. the bus station and some hotels) within Hurghada have been "blocked" on Uber. You will see a message that Uber "does not operate in this location". Simply walk about 2-3 blocks/5 minutes away from the building (avoiding the taxi touts along the way), and you will be able to use Uber again.

Taxi drivers in Hurghada have astonishing talent for spotting tourists from far, far away; look at the approaching car and it will stop for you - at a price.

Before stepping in, find out if driver speaks any English, and show the wanted destination on the map. There are only few streets with names, so the destination is specified with nearby places, a hotel for example. Discuss and agree the total price ( not per person ) with the driver. Do not travel with the meter on, driver can control it. After the driver agrees on a price, jump in. Get out in front of the hotel.

To avoid confrontation with the drivers ensure you have the correct amount of money you agreed at first, hand over the money on at destination, get out and walk away.

If you pay with a LE5 or LE50 notes drivers may try to switch it for a 50-piastre note, and then they request the original note that you have already paid. Piastres notes are smaller than pounds. Sometimes the driver agrees on LE15 fare, and when you arrive tells you he said LE50 and his accent worsens.

  • ABC Taxi , ☏ +20 100 222 82 94 . ABC provides a professional service with agreed fares in advance. Call them from a local mobile phone to make a booking. The call will drop straight away and they call you back immediately, saving your credit. The details of the car will be sent by SMS, with the rate being confirmed by SMS too. A ride between Makadi Bay and Hurghada Marina (about 30 km) cost LE126 in August 2019. ( updated Aug 2019 )

See [ edit ]

Hurghada does not have many spectacular sights except for the Red Sea. However, daily one- or two-day trips are available into both Luxor and Cairo. The Nile at Luxor is popular, as are the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx in Giza, Cairo.

Do [ edit ]

If you were to choose to stay in your hotel complex for the duration of your break, you would miss out on much more than you bargained for. Swimming in the warm sea, windsurfing, para sailing, jetski, good shopping, excellent and varied cuisine from around the world are just a few things to mention, but there is more:

  • Cruise across the Red Sea to the uninhabited island of Giftun surrounded by magical coral gardens. Enjoy a lazy day on the white sand or swim among the coral reefs. The reefs near the island have many fish and corals which makes it ideal for snorkelling. There are many types of boat trips available, from half day pirate cruises for youngsters to adult only day cruises.
  • Quad-biking hundreds of miles into the Sahara desert for tea with a Bedoin tribe, then camel-riding across Biblical plains to see remote and ancient wonders. For a desert adventure, you can also ride motorbikes or beach buggies into the desert.
  • You can also ride a glass bottom boat on which you can see the amazing coral reefs and underwater scenery.
  • In the evening, you can go for a walk in the promenade area for some traditional cafes, shopping, or dining. There is a bowling and family entertainment center close by as well as a few malls and restaurants. Night life usually begins quite late, and you can find some clubs in close proximity to the promenade.

Beaches [ edit ]

It might be windy in late March (or not). You may want to check if your beach resort hotel provides windscreens on the beach.

If your accommodation does not have its own beach: There are no beaches in Hurghada that are for free. You can use for example these ones:

  • 27.221206 33.842636 1 El Sakia Beach ( Near the marina ). Entry: LE50 . ( updated Oct 2022 )
  • 27.212997 33.842632 2 Orange Beach ( Somewhat more south of the marina ). Entry: LE100 . ( updated Dec 2022 )
  • 27.259237 33.824132 3 El Sawaky Beach ( In Northern Hurghada ). A lot of space and just a few tourists. Entry: LE50 . ( updated Nov 2022 )

Diving [ edit ]

The main reason to visit Hurghada is the Red Sea, which is excellent for diving or snorkeling. See incredible coral reefs and hundreds of varieties of tropical fish just 10 m from the beach or with boat trips. Either your hotel will have dive escorts on site, or it can arrange a scuba diving expedition with guides. The divers are locals and generally excellent in handling beginners. You don't need to know how to swim to scuba dive. In late March, the water may be a bit cold, so a wet suit might be necessary. Most budget hotels have dives tours (2 regular dives) for €50 on offer, but if you are staying at one of the more posh accommodations, you will end up paying up to US$65. So better to step out of your comfort zone (aka hotel) and ask around for prices.

  • Ashraf Divers ( Ashraf Asheaf ), ☏ +20 1223848445 , [email protected] . Reliable, relaxed and friendly dive master. His dives include everything; travel, boat, equipment, food, drinks. Though, do not rely on him for booking your accommodation—read Egypt#Cope . WhatsApp: see phone number. WeChat: ashraf diver . See also: Ashraf Abat . As inexpensive as other good deals— $35 for 2 dives inkling full rental equipment (as of Okt.2022), depending on number of people and season . ( updated Sep 2018 )

Kitesurfing [ edit ]

The whole Red Sea coast has superb conditions for kitesurfing. Hurghada is no exception. Here you can find a lot of kite-spots with kite-schools and kite-stations. Here some of them:

  • PlayKite , in the next bay from Nubia hotel. This kite spot has a lot of space for beginning and advanced riders
  • Kite4Fun , near AMC Azur and Hawaii Le Jardin hotels. This place has shallow lagoon with flat water.
  • Masters Surf School , in Panorama Bungalows Aqua Park Hurghada hotel. Small area of shallow water, so it is a good spot for intermediate riders
  • Aeros School [dead link] , near Play Kite station. There is also a shallow lagoon where any level rider can ride.

Buy [ edit ]

You can buy many souvenirs from the shops that are spread inside the main town (Sekalla high street) and along the beach areas, also the old town (el Dahar) has a wide selection of bazaars with cheaper prices than Sigala. There is a new shopping mall now open about a 10-minute taxi ride from the town, on Senzo Mall towards the airport road. It has a large Spinneys Hypermarket and many other shops, fast food outlets, a 5-screen cinema, and a moderate sized children's play area.

Remember to haggle, haggle and haggle everywhere except in restaurants and pharmacies. You should be able to get 75% off from the price that seller asks at first. This might vary with different products, so remember to check few shops for correct prices. There are souvenir shops that have fixed prices, mostly in New Hurghada area although these maye be higher than if you haggle in the souks. The well known "Cleopatra" shops, in Hurghada city Mamsha and Sheraton road, have a wide range of souvenirs such as shirts, woodwork and silver.

For brand-names and higher quality products, go to 'New Marina' and Sheraton road for Adidas, Timberland, Dockers and Levi's. Clothes for sale in the traditional bazaar ( souq in Arabic) are often fake, although the banners show the well-known brand names.

About the perfume shops the milligram for LE1 that means the best perfume for LE25 because all the perfume are on oil base and rarely that you can find natural or original perfume. Be careful when they drag you inside, they will invite you to drink something often tea. If they feel you are rich they will buy cola, while they are chatting with you and let you smell some strong perfumes, it is advisable to refuse because if you drink you then have to buy.

Eat [ edit ]

Hurghada offers a variety of cuisine, including fast food, western restaurants, oriental food, and many others. KFC and McDonald's, and local fast food GAD, are present.

Splurge [ edit ]

Drink [ edit ].

Those new to Egypt will find karkaday (a drink made from an infusion of hibiscus, served hot or cold and reputed to have many health benefits) and chi (local version of tea, usually served in a glass) offered everywhere. Both are delicious and will usually come replete with a smoke on a sheesha pipe, known in the West as a hookah. Sheeshas are used for smoking molasses tobacco in various flavours, with the smoke passing through water before inhalation through a long tube attached to the bowl. Although they may resemble a device used to smoke illicit substances in the west (a bong), sheesha is legal.

Alcoholic drinks can usually be found in bars or hotels. Hurghada has a very western atmosphere so it is much easier to drink than in other areas of Egypt. Non-alcoholic drinks include canned soft drinks and fruit juice, and traditional Egyptian drinks including the aforementioned karkadeh, yansoon (aniseed tea), ganzabeel (ginger tea, reputed to have digestive benefits), irfa (cinnamon tea), and sahlab (a hot, drinkable pudding thickened with orchid-root starch and typically flavored with cinammon). Lemonade is also available both cold and hot, and may be made with mint.

Over the years, Hurghada has developed a bubbling reputation for its cosmopolitan nightlife scene, alongside the many bars within the new 27.22586 33.84102 1 Hurghada Marina .

There are many bars, nightclubs and discos in Hurghada. Almost every hotel comes equip with its own disco, and then you can find the only beachside Ministry of Sound venue, coupled with the world's first Hed Kandi Beach Bar, other nightlife leaders in the city include Hard Rock Cafe, Little Budha, Calypso Disco, the R&B Club, and throughout the summer months you can find the popular Voodoo parties (every Wednesday) within the Grand Hotel Resorts.

Global leaders in dance music, Ministry of Sound Beach Club, operate a daily schedule ranging from disco, R&B/hip-hop and house/techno. There are also many other discos and late-night bars dotted around the city, generally speaking ask at your hotel or tour guide to recommend a venue.

  • 27.21378 33.83926 2 Praha Cafe ( at the end of Sheraton Rd ). Czech pub. ( updated Mar 2023 )
  • 27.239922 33.839625 3 Dubai Cafe . Variety of non-alcoholic drinks and hookah, welcoming local atmosphere, street-side and indoor lounge area. cheap . ( updated Mar 2018 )

Sleep [ edit ]

Large tour operators such as Tui have their own resorts or block bookings with newer local groups like Jaz. These are often the "all inclusive" variety. These may not appeal to the independent traveller, but they can still be a good base for exploring the area. There are plenty of internet sites to find reviews and book these.

A little internet searching will throw up some private self-catering accommodation that is usually owned by Europeans as a holiday home, which gives much more independence than staying in a resort hotel and is potentially much cheaper. Budget hotels catering to Egyptians with rooms at LE50 can be found near the Upper Egypt bus station.

Embassies [ edit ]

Stay safe [ edit ].

In 2018, there were complaints of guests falling ill at the Steigenberger Aqua Magic hotel because of possible food safety issues, including undercooked food and lapses in cleanliness. Two British travellers died; the BBC reports travel agency Thomas Cook removed its clients from that hotel and in some cases arranged to fly them home.

Because of the heat combined with inadequate food hygiene, gastrointestinal ailments are common (sickness and diarrhoea). The better tourist resorts do make an effort to have good hygiene, but nothing is ever certain.

Go next [ edit ]

  • Luxor – The obvious and popular next destination. It can be done on a day-trip, though that's a bit mad, and most of a 20-hour day. Ask around for reputable operators: a cheap tour will be overcrowded, first too cold then too hot in a poorly-sprung minibus, and you will see less of Karnak and the Valley of the Kings and a whole heap more of the driver's uncle's souvenir shop.
  • Aswan – Reached via Luxor but less hassle then it. Once a week there's a ferry across Lake Nasser to Wadi Halfa in Sudan, the only surface route between the two countries.

First Time in Hurghada: A Guide for Beginners

Makadi Spa Hotel

Disclosure: Click links in this article, we may get a small commission Learn more

We remember our first time in Hurghada – it was October 2005 and we booked a last minute unspecified 3* all-inclusive hotel deal, as was all the rage those days. It only cost £300pp for a week, including flights!

Luckily, we landed on our feet and ended up staying at the luxury 5* Grand Resort Hotel .

Back in 2005, going somewhere for the first time was a bit of a leap of faith. You didn’t have sites focussed on Hurghada to rely on, and what we’d have given for a ‘first time visitor guide’ like this.

Hurghada has come a long way since 2005, and continues to attract thousands of tourists from the UK every week – and it’s not hard to see why.

We’ve put together this guide for anyone who’s in the same place that we were, 20 years ago. If you’re planning your first trip to Hurghada , here’s our guide to the things you should know to make the most of your experience.

Sunbeds on Hurghada beach at sunset

Top Attractions to Visit

There are so many places to see and things to in Hurghada , and realistically you’re not going to tick them all off during your first visit.

If you’re visiting Hurghada in Egypt for the first time, you’ll want to explore some of the must-see attractions the resort has to offer. Here are some of the top places to visit:

Giftun Island

This is without doubt one of the most beautiful islands in the Red Sea . Giftun is a natural reserve with colourful coral reefs, and a huge variety of marine life, including dolphins, turtles, and exotic fish.

The best way to discover Giftun Island is by choosing an organised trip. These are available from our travel partners GetYourGuide.com .

Mahmya Island

Located off the coast of Hurghada, Mahmya Island is a paradise for snorkelling, diving, and sunbathing. You’ll be amazed by the stunning turquoise waters and fine white sand beaches.

Hurghada Grand Aquarium

Hurghada Grand Aquarium is a great place to visit for anyone who enjoys marine life. You’ll get to see over 1,200 species of fish, sharks, rays, and reptiles. One of the highlights of visiting here is that there is also a glass tunnel that allows you to walk underwater.

El Dahar is the old town area of Hurghada, probably the most authentic part of the resort. Here, you can find a great blend of popular sights nestled within traditional Egyptian architecture.

Hurghada Centre

Spend a few hours exploring the vibrant souk (market) filled with spices, textiles, and souvenirs, as well as plenty of restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Sharm El Naga

If you’re looking for a peaceful and secluded spot, Sharm El Naga is a beautiful beach with a long coral reef that is ideal for snorkelling or diving. You can also just enjoy a camel ride or a sunset yoga class.

How to Get Around Hurghada on Your First Visit

If you’re busy planning your first visit to Hurghada, we fully understand it’s hard to know what to expect. One of the questions you may be asking is how do you get around when you’re there? We have the answer!

Here are some tips to help you move around the are easily, cheaply and safely:

Without doubt the easiest way to get around. Taxis are really common here and you’ll find them everywhere – at your hotel, outside the airport, at bus stations etc. One thing that’s different from the UK is that most of the vehicles don’t have a meter! So, it’s HUGELY important that you agree the fare before you start your journey.

If there is any reluctance from the driver to do this, then our advice would be to walk away. It’s not worth putting yourself in a difficult situation.

The local bus system covers most parts of the city. They’re cheap – so a big tick in the affordable box – but they can also be really crowded. And we mean REALLY crowded during peak hours. The best thing to do is check with your hotel before you travel to find out what your best option is.

A pretty unique experience. As much an attraction as convenience. Microbuses are smaller than regular buses – think a tiny minibus and zoom around at speed. They are a far more informal way of travelling around and you can just hail them by the side of the road – remember to ask where they’re going though!

Rental Cars

Honestly – don’t! Driving in Hurghada can be challenging due to the high level of traffic and unfamiliar road conditions. The only rule seems to be that there are no rules. Take a bus or a taxi. Live to see another day.

Hurghada is a relatively small city, and walking is a viable option if you are staying in the city centre. However, during the summer months, walking can be tiring due to the heat, so it’s important to carry water and protect yourself from the sun.

The Best Time To Visit Hurghada

When planning a visit to Hurghada for the first time, timing is everything. This part of our guide will provide you with useful insight into the best time to visit Hurghada based on things like weather, what you want do and lots more.

Weather Conditions

The peak tourist season in Hurghada is between November and March. This is mainly because the temperature is still lovely and warm, but not the extreme heat found during the rest of the year.

You can check out our month-by-month guide to Hurghada Weather , but during this time temperatures hover between 20°C to 25°C, making it an ideal time to explore the town and its surroundings.

Be aware though that during December and January, the nights can get colder, so remember to pack some extra layers if you’re planning on being out and about.

During the summer months (June to August) is when Hurghada experiences the extreme temperatures that many associate with an Egyptian summer. If you don’t enjoy the heat particularly, then we’d strongly advise avoiding this time of year.

Crowds and Tourist Season

It might be your first time in Hurghada, but lots of people have already had their first time and are coming back again! It’s such a popular resort and people return year-on-year and it can get crowded, particularly during the peak season.

Want to avoid the masses? Visit during what’s known as the shoulder season – this is typically April-May or September-October. You get the best of both worlds during these times, as the weather is incredible and you have more space and less queues everywhere. It’s our favourite time to visit.

Diving and Snorkelling

Hurghada is world-famous for it’s scuba diving. The best time to do this is between May and September. The reasons for this are that during this time water visibility is best, so you get the best views possible of the vibrant and colourful coral reefs.

Tips for First-Time Visitors to Hurghada

If you’re planning your first visit to Hurghada , there are a few things you should keep in mind to make the most of your experience. Here are our top tips – we hope they are useful:

  • Pack wisely: Hurghada is known for being hot and sunny, so bear this in mind when you’re packing. Lightweight and breathable clothing to stay cool is the best option here, but if you’re visiting between November and March, bear in mind the evenings can get a little cooler, so bring layers. If you plan to travel inland or visit any desert areas, bring some long sleeves and trousers. And most importantly – don’t forget your sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat!
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially during the summer months when temperatures can soar. Most hotels and resorts offer bottled water, but it’s also a good idea for the environment to bring a reusable water bottle to fill up throughout the day. However, be careful doing this as the water in Hurghada is absolutely not good to drink. So make sure it’s being filled up from a filtered source.
  • Be respectful: As with anywhere in the world, it’s your duty as the visitor to fit in with local rules, regulations, customs and culture. Egypt is a Muslim country, so it’s important to be respectful of this. Mainly, this means dressing modestly when visiting mosques or other religious sites, and avoid public displays of affection.
  • Exchange currency: Even in today’s cashless society, it’s a good idea to exchange some currency before you arrive in Hurghada, as not all businesses – particularly in the souks (markets) accept credit cards. You can withdraw Egyptian pounds from ATMs, but avoid the hassle as many of them charge a fee.
  • Haggle wisely: Bargaining is a common practice in Hurghada, especially when shopping in markets and bazaars. However, it’s really important to be respectful when haggling and don’t go too low with your offers. Also, it’s meant to be a good natured exchange, so don’t become rude or difficult just because you’re not getting your own way. A good rule of thumb is to start with a price that is half of the vendor’s initial offer, and work your way up from there. But most importantly, remember to smile when you’re doing it!
  • Book excursions through recognised operators: There are many places to book a tour or excursion in Hurghada – some better than others. We’d recommend only using GetYourGuide.com – and look out for their ‘certified’ badge for the very best tours on offer. Booking ahead doesn’t only ensure your safety and enjoyment, but it also guarantees availability and price.

By keeping these tips in mind ahead of your first trip to Hurghada, you’ll be better prepared to make the most out of your time here.

Where to Stay in Hurghada: Accommodation Options for First-Time Visitors

If you’re planning your first-ever trip to Hurghada , deciding on where to stay is a crucial part of your planning process. Here is a breakdown of the different accommodation options available for first-time visitors to Hurghada:

Hotel Hurghada

All-Inclusive Resorts

Hurghada is well-known for its luxurious , all-inclusive resorts. Some of the best hotels in Hurghada are right on the beach, offering stunning views of the Red Sea. Staying at an all-inclusive resort means that you’ll have easy access to everything you need, including food, drinks, and entertainment.

Budget-Friendly Hotels

Hurghada also has plenty of budget-friendly hotels that offer comfortable accommodation without breaking the bank. These hotels are usually located in the city centre, a short distance away from the beach. While they may not offer the same level of luxury as the all-inclusive resorts, budget-friendly hotels are a great option for those who want to save money while still being close to all the action.

Apartments and Villas

If you’re travelling in a group or planning an extended stay in Hurghada, renting an apartment or villa might be a good option. This allows you to have your own space, cook your own meals and enjoy the privacy and freedom of having your own accommodation. Many apartments and villas are located close to Hurghada’s beaches and come with stunning sea views.

Bed and Breakfasts

Bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) offer a more intimate and personalised experience for travellers. They are usually small, family-run establishments that offer comfortable rooms with breakfast included in the price. B&Bs are usually located away from the busy tourist areas, giving you a taste of local life in Hurghada.

Egypt is without a doubt one of the greatest nations to visit in Africa, with the Great Pyramids of Giza , the complex tombs of the Valley of the Kings in Luxor , and the flowing Nile River. Many people are unaware, however, that Egypt also has magnificent beaches and world-class scuba diving in the Red Sea where you can spend your fantastic Holidays in Hurghada Egypt and other cities like Sharm El Sheikh , Dahab and Marsa Alam .

Hurghada Egypt resorts are ideal for anybody looking for a peaceful, sunny holiday spent lounging by the fresh breeze at the pool

Packing for Hurghada

Packing for bright skies, poolside relaxing, and outdoor adventures is a must. While the majority of Egypt is conservative, with women obliged to cover their knees and shoulders, this is not the case in tourist destinations. While on Hurghada Holidays, you won’t have to worry about covering yourself. Don’t forget to bring the following items:

For days spent relaxing by the pool, bring sunscreen, a cover-up, a swimsuit, and a brimmed hat.

Remember to bring your scuba diving equipment since diving in the Red Sea is world-class or you can buy there whatever you want if you don’t want to carry that heavy equipment. If you’re not a huge diver, you might only want to carry snorkeling equipment.

Tennis shoes and gym clothes for the gym could be a part of your luggage. Evenings spent dining in your Hurghada resort restaurants or enjoying the nighttime entertainment should be dressed in slacks, dresses, and button-up shirts.

How to get to Hurghada Egypt

Hurghada Egypt is a Red Sea tourist town in the East of Egypt . International and domestic flights are available from Hurghada’s airport on a regular basis. You may take a daily bus from Luxor or hire a private standard-sized vehicle for around 150$ or pay 250$ for a van that can seat three or more persons. To transport tourists to and from Hurghada, drivers must get permission, therefore give your chauffeur at least 24 hours’ heads up.

In and Around Hurghada

Even if you never depart your resort, you’ll have a fantastic time at Hurghada. However, if you’re searching for something to do in Hurghada Egypt, here are just a few suggestions:

Diving in Hurghada Red Sea

Did you also know that Egypt is one of the greatest scuba diving destinations worldwide? The Red Sea is known for its vibrant coral and sparkling water. There are hundreds of liveaboard dive boats in Egypt, as well as world-class diving sites close off the shore of Hurghada Egypt. It’s also an excellent location for those seeking PADI certification.

You could go snorkeling in the afternoon and do a novice dive in the morning. Also scuba dive in water that happened to be warm enough to swim in even in December! You will see lionfish, spotted rays, barracuda, and a variety of other unusual aquatic animals. Even observations of great white sharks in the Red Sea have been reported!

Desert Trips in Hurghada Egypt

Your Holidays in Hurghada won’t be completed without a Desert day trip. There are various options for exploring the huge desert from outside Hurghada; Dependent on whether you choose to cruise in a jeep with a professional driver or ride your own quad bike. Trips are available in the mornings or evenings, and often involve visits to nearby Bedouin settlements, sunset viewing, and stargazing.

Take a day excursion to Luxor — it takes around 3-4 hours to drive from Hurghada to Luxor. We recommend staying in Luxor for at least three days because there are so many amazing monuments to see. If you’re short on time, though, you may take a day trip to visit the highlights. You will have the most freedom if you hire a private car and driver, although there are numerous alternatives for groups excursions.

Sliders Cable Park is one of the world’s largest cable parks, located in El Gouna; The place is approximately 25 mins away north of Hurghada Egypt. If you like wakeboarding, this is a must-do, and they also offer courses and intro packages for people who are new to the sport.

Down the coast from Hurghada, the stream of holiday resorts becomes less dense until three belated spurts of development on the outskirts of Port Safaga (58km), El-Quseir (a further 85km) and Marsa Alam (a further 132km). Little more than an overgrown, grubby port, Safaga has few charms, though it is within boat range of some stunning offshore reefs, while El-Quseir retains a sleepy quality unlike anywhere else on the Red Sea. The region around Marsa Alam is home to several isolated diving camps and resorts, as well as the Port Ghalib tourist development, of which construction is ongoing.

Eco-tourism or greenwashing?

Port safaga, diving and snorkelling in safaga, south of marsa alam.

Further south, communications become tenuous and bureaucratic obstacles loom as you head towards the Sudanese border. From Bir Shalateen , you need military permission to proceed further south, or into the mountains. The principal attraction of the far south is its reefs, which can be reached on dive boats operating out of Hurghada, Safaga, El-Quseir and Marsa Alam.

Tailor-made trips for   Egypt

The Red Sea Coast’s booming tourism industry has prospered at serious cost to the environment . Rampant development, over-fishing, pollution, the degradation of coral reefs and increased pressure on water supplies are just a few of the problems. As the Hurghada Protection and Conservation Association warns: “Environmental deterioration is no longer a threat but a reality. Each day in the Red Sea we are witness to the depletion of the very resource base that attracts so many visitors here in the first place.” In recent years numerous “ eco-lodges ” have sprung up in the region. While some – such as those run by Red Sea Diving Safari – have genuine green credentials, many others are simply indulging in greenwashing. Similarly not all the dive centres and travel agencies are as conservation-minded as their promotional literature might suggest. The key thing for eco-minded travellers to do is to ask lots of questions – How is waste disposed of? What is recycled? How is power usage minimized? How does the local community benefit? What conservation efforts are being made? – before deciding who to stay and dive with.

EL-QUSEIR , 85km from Safaga, is another phosphates extraction centre, though with fewer inhabitants and more appeal. In pharaonic times, boats sailed from here to the “Land of Punt” (thought to be Yemen or Somalia), as depicted in reliefs within Hatshepsut’s temple at Deir el-Bahri. The Romans knew it as Leukos Limen (“White Harbour”), while under Arab rule El-Quseir was the largest Red Sea port until the tenth century, remaining a major transit point for pilgrims until the 1840s, when Flaubert caught its last flickers of exoticism.

Today, El-Quseir is a sleepy place, mostly unaffected by tourism, despite the resorts on its outskirts. Life moves pretty slowly, except on Fridays, when Ma’aza and Ababda Bedouin flock in for the weekly market . The best dive sites nearby are the Brothers, east of El-Quseir, and the Elphinstone and Abu Dabbab reefs, down towards Marsa Alam, although the Quei and Wizr reefs are closer. All the resorts have their own dive centres although they may not allow outside divers to join their trips; it’s best to book a dive package deal from the outset.

The fortress

Smack in the town centre, just past the main traffic roundabout, sits El-Quseir’s most impressive landmark, the sixteenth-century crumbling walled fortress , which now houses a museum. Designed to protect trade routes used by the Ottomans, the fortress declined after trade was diverted around the Cape of Good Hope. Napoleon’s army raised the French flag here in 1799, only to attract the attention of British warships sailing off the coast. The French survived a brief assault, but abandoned the fort two years later. Its most recent occupant was the Egyptian army, stationed here until 1975. The cistern, watchtower (climb up for excellent views) and rooms built into the walls of the fortress each contain small exhibits on the history and traditions of the Red Sea coast.

The rest of the town

In addition to the fortress, El-Quseir has a few other sights that are worth a quick look, including a small harbour where you can see local boat-builders at work, and a beachside promenade , good for a stroll. A few blocks back from the waterfront, past a number of shuttered and balconied houses, are the thirteenth-century Faran Mosque and an imposing former quarantine hospital dating back to the nineteenth century.

The town of MARSA ALAM itself is undistinguished, consisting of a large army base, some government buildings and apartment blocks constructed for the expected influx of hotel staff to the area, grafted onto a fishing port where liveaboards now moor. The area around the town, however, has become a diving hub, and there are some excellent dive sites within striking distance. The best places to stay are outside Marsa Alam to the north and the south.

PORT SAFAGA (Bur Safaga in Arabic) amounts to very little. Coming in from the north, you pass a slip road curving off to a series of holiday resorts on a headland, catering mainly to divers. The town, whose economy is driven by the nearby phosphate mines, begins 3km later and consists of a single windswept avenue running straight on past concrete boxes with bold signs proclaiming their function, until the bus station and a final mosque, 4km south. Silos and cranes identify the port, which runs alongside (but remains out of bounds) for most of this distance. Safaga’s only attractions are the reefs to the north, and there’s not much reason to hang around otherwise.

Boats and instructors at the main dive centres tend to be committed to groups, though they will take on independent travellers if they have space: expect to pay around €300 for a PADI Open Water course or around €50 for two boat dives. As in Hurghada, an environmental fee of €3 a day is levied on all divers and snorkellers. The main diving grounds lie 6–8km offshore from the holiday resorts between Safaga Island and the Ras Abu Soma headland to the north. Tubiya Island is ringed with corals just off its beach, while dive boats drop their clients directly over the sunken North and South Fairway Reefs or the twin pairs of sites known as Tubiya Kebir , Tubiya Soraya , Gamul Soraya and Gamul Kebir . Other sites include the Seven Pillars off Ras Abu Soma, and the Panorama Reef and Shark Point , 10km east of Safaga Island. Most of them are notable for their coral pillars and strong currents. Note that among the big fish prevalent in these waters are aggressive hammerhead sharks .

For keen divers who have made it this far, there are several camps and hotels to the south of town offering the opportunity to explore the most remote dive sites in the southern Red Sea – and to experience an eerily empty and barren region of mountains, ocean and reef far removed from the commercialized northern Red Sea coast.

One of the most popular of these dive sites is the Dolphin House Reef (also known as Samadai Reef), a crescent-shaped protected area set up in 2001 to protect the area’s spinner dolphins. Tourist numbers to the reef have been capped at two hundred per day – previously there were up to 2,500 – and it’s now a great spot for snorkelling as well as diving. Other notable dive sites include Elphinstone , a 300-metre-long reef ideal for drift diving; Abu Dabab , a series of sheltered reefs; Fury Shoals , a set of reefs rich in marine life; and St John’s , a site with caves, black coral and – if you’re lucky – sharks.

Wadi Gimal National Park

A unique protected area covering 6000 square kilometres of land and 4000 square kilometres of sea, Wadi Gimal National Park is home to an interesting mix of archeological sites and wildlife. The area once lay on an important trading route, and there are several pharaonic and Roman ruins to explore, including the village of Geli and an old emerald mine. Wild gazelle can also be seen, while in spring and the autumn you may be able to spot migrant birds such as osprey, falcons, white-eyed gulls and the occasional flamingo. Red Sea Desert Adventures ( w redseadesertadventures.com ) and the Shams Alam Beach Resort can organize dives, excursions and overnight camping in the park.

History of hurghada.

Contrasting sharply with ancient Egyptian hubs like Luxor, Aswan, and Alexandria, Hurghada’s story is one of contemporary inception and rapid transformation. Unlike these storied cities, where ancient civilizations flourished, Hurghada is a testament to modern development and change.

Early Beginnings

In the early 20th century, spanning from 1900 to 1920, Hurghada was merely a humble village, home to a small community of Arabian fishermen. Historical accounts from 1906 depict Hurghada as a settlement of just six rudimentary dwellings. Its initial economy was modest, centered around drying and selling fish to caravans traveling from the Nile Valley. A significant turning point came in 1909 with the discovery of petroleum near Hurghada, but it wasn’t until after World War II that serious excavation and production began.

Rising Prominence

Despite its current status as the largest city in Egypt’s Red Sea region, Hurghada remained relatively obscure until the 1920s. Its ascent began when sailors from the Arabian Peninsula frequented the area for fishing near Egypt’s borders. A large tree, known as “Gharqad” (Nitraria in Latin), served as a popular meeting point for these sailors, giving rise to the phrase “let’s meet at the Ghardaqa”. This phrase is believed to have inspired the city’s name, Hurghada.

Royal and Military Connections

In a nod to its growing importance, the first summer resort in Hurghada was constructed in 1952, commissioned for King Farouq, Egypt’s last monarch. Following the nationalization policies of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, this resort was repurposed as a club for the Egyptian armed forces.

Tourism Transformation

It was not until the early 1980s that tourism experts and the Egyptian government fully recognized Hurghada’s potential as a major tourist destination. The city’s proximity to a plethora of islands, its vibrant array of colorful fish and coral reefs, and a sprawling beach exceeding 30 kilometers, set the stage for its rise in the tourism sector. This natural bounty attracted local and international investors, particularly from Europe, the United States, and the Gulf countries. Their investments in hotels and resorts catalyzed Hurghada’s evolution into one of Egypt’s most sought-after vacation spots.

Current Status

As of the latest update in 2019, Hurghada stands as a beacon of modernity and a premier holiday destination, seamlessly blending its recent past with a dynamic present, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and contemporary comfort.
