The tour on board the so-called stand up paddle board lasts about 2 hours. It begins with a small practical lesson to understand its use.

The experience in Sup involves the use of a board, a paddle to row, and then everything depends on balance. Once you have learned the basics you are ready to begin the real experience. Once you get on the table and take the right confidence and with a little balance we start.

The exploration begins in a group with the instructor. Off to lake coast, for a better view, but without ever straying too far. The sup tour on Lake Garda is a tour led by an expert guide / instructor, who will always be in your company.

Extraordinary Stand-Up Paddle Experience on Lake Garda

I had the opportunity to participate in a Stand-Up Paddle lesson on Lake Garda, and I couldn't be more enthusiastic about the experience. The staff was extremely friendly from the beginning, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The instructor gave us detailed safety instructions, putting us at ease. Lake Garda is a natural spectacle, with crystal clear waters and breathtaking views. In short, this SUP lesson was an exceptional experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience an unforgettable day in a breathtaking environment. I can't wait to come back!

One of the most beautiful ways to be enchanted at sunset

For us it was the first time and we couldn't have wished for anything better. It wouldn't have been the same without Cristina and Roberto, they are two wonderful people, she super nice and always available, he very nice! They gave us peace of mind and serenity, everything was well organised, they even offered us the chance to put on the wetsuit for those of us who weren't equipped, not to mention the photos and videos, a beautiful memory! We discovered a new activity and only thanks to them will we return! :)

The experience is very special, both physically and mentally. The effort and concentration are considerable, at least the first time, to stay balanced while falling into the water as little as possible. The fun is guaranteed! Our guide? Wonderful. SUP Touren - SUP-Tour in Riva del Garda am Gardasee

Grotte mit Wasserfall neben dem verlassenen Hotel Ponale

Durch einen Artikel im SUP-Magazin 2017 wurden wir auf diesen Spot aufmerksam. 

Das SUP-Mag berichtet über eine kleine Grotte in der Nähe der italienischen Ortschaft Garda del Riva. Die natürliche Kulisse sei so schön, dass diverse Hersteller von SUP-Boards dort einen Teil ihre Werbefotos aufnehmen. 

Da unser Urlaub 2018 ohnehin an den Gardasee gehen sollte, mussten wir diese Grotte natürlich besuchen. Doch wo genau liegt sie eigentlich?

Nach Recherchen in diversen SUP-Facebook-Gruppen erfuhren wir, dass die Grotte direkt rechts neben dem nicht mehr genutzten „Hotel Ponale“ liegen soll.

Hotel Ponale..., Bilder gibt es dazu reichlich, aber Koordinaten oder eine genaue Lagebezeichnung sind schwer zu finden. Irgendwann lasen wir dann, dass das „Hotel Ponale“ auch „Casa della Trota“ heißen soll. Und siehe da: Google Maps kennt es als „Albergo Ristorante Casa della Trota“.

Um die Korrektheit der Angaben bestätigt zu bekommen, nahmen wir noch Kontakt mit dem örtlichen SUP-Club in Riva auf. Es wäre ja zu schade, wenn wir diese tolle Grotte aufgrund falscher Informationen nicht finden würden.

Vom örtlichen SUP-Club bekamen wir die Angaben bestätigt und noch ein/zwei gute Tipps:

Aufgrund der Wind- und Wellenverhältnissen am Gardassee sollten wir spätestens um 09.00 Uhr starten und um 13.00 Uhr zurück sein. Alternativ erst Abends nach 18.00 Uhr starten. 

Am Morgen weht am Gardasee ein leichter Wind (Peler) Richtung Süden. Diesen kann man gut für die Tour nutzen und auch leicht auf dem Rückweg dagegen anpaddeln. 

Wenn sich die Luft über dem See tagsüber durch die Sonne aufheizt, steigt sie nach oben und aus der Poebene wird  kühlere Luft angesaugt (Ora). Dabei wechselt die Windrichtung von Nord auf Süd. Der Ora bläst meist heftig und bringt oft hohe Wellen mit sich. 

Desweiteren erhielten wir einen Tipp für einen kostenlosen Parkplatz dicht am Wasser:

Gut vorbereitet fuhren wir nach Riva del Garda. Bereits auf dem Hinweg über die westliche Küstenstraße konnten wir im Vorbeifahren kurz einen Blick auf das Hotel erhaschen. Anhalten oder gar Einsteigen konnten wir hier nicht. Wenn wir nicht gerade durch einen Tunnel fahren, ragt links die Felswand auf und rechts geht es etwa 40 Meter senkrecht zum Gardasee hinab. 

Die ehemalige Zufahrt zum Hotel ist mit einem Tor versperrt. Möglichkeiten zum Anhalten gibt es keine. 

In Riva haben wir uns einen anderen Parkplatz als den Empfohlenen gesucht, weil dieser für uns geeigneter lag (Google-Maps-Koordinaten: 45.8845131,10.8453006). 

Hier bezahlten wir 2€/ Stunde und hatten auf einer asphaltierten Fläche ausreichend Platz die SUPs aufzupumpen und die Tour vorzubereiten. Als wir soweit mit den Vorbereitungen fertig waren, warfen wir 6,-€ in den Parkautomat, weil wir für die Tour 3 Stunden eingeplant hatten. 

Nach etwa 80 Metern Fußweg konnten wir im kleinen Sporthafen einer Segelschule über einen Steg sehr gut einsteigen. 

Immer entlang des Westufers des Gardasees fahren wir direkt neben einer steil aufragenden Felswand mit Blick auf die Ausläufer der Alpen in einer absolut atemberaubenden Kulisse etwa 4 km und eine knappe Stunde sehr gemütlich Richtung Süden. Die fast senkrechte Bergwand ragt direkt neben uns einige hundert Meter hinauf. 

Über uns windet sich die Küstenstrasse entlang des Berges und durch viele Tunnel. Noch etwas höher erblicken wir die alte Ponale-Straße. Diese ist inzwischen für den motorisierten Verkehr gesperrt und den Wanderern und Fahrradfahrern vorbehalten. 

Wie erwartet, taucht irgendwann das verlassene Hotel vor uns auf. Irgendwie hat dieser Ort etwas mystisches. Das Gebäude scheint förmlich am Felsen zu kleben. Die verrosteten Balkone, die Sonnenterrassen und einige Hinweisschilder zeugen vom Glanz vergangener Zeiten. Im Innern hängen alte Kronleuchter von der Decke und lassen erahnen, wie schön hier früher alles war. 

Laut Internetrecherche verhindern die Auflagen der örtlichen Baubehörde, dass das Hotel renoviert und wieder eröffnet wird. Die Auflagen erfordern hohe Investitionen, die sich kaum wieder einspielen lassen dürften. 

Rechts neben dem Hotel spannt sich ein Bogen einer kleinen Brücke der Küstenstraße über einen Einschnitt im Berg. Ein sehr großer Oleander verbirgt ein wenig den dahinterliegenden Zugang zur Grotte. Wir gleiten langsam hinein und sind sprachlos!

Vor uns finden wir eine etwa 20x20 Meter große und rund 25 Meter hohe Grotte an deren hinteren Ende ein Wasserfall hinab donnert. Am Eingang der Grotte liegen zwei kleine Felsen dicht unter der Wasseroberfläche. Diese erfordern es, dass wir von den Boards absteigen und sie hinein schieben, da wir unsere Finnen nicht beschädigen wollen. Das Wasser ist hinter den Felsen am Eingang mit etwa 1 Meter ausreichend tief für die SUPs und andererseits flach genug um problemlos stehen zu können. 

Die Wassertemperatur hat sich deutlich verändert. Außerhalb der Grotte ist der See mittlerweile angenehm warm, im Innern ist sie durch den Zustrom von kaltem Gebirgswasser aus dem Wasserfall einige Grad kühler. Dennoch gewöhnen wir uns schnell an die Temperaturen und nutzen die frühen und einsamen  Morgenstunden um diverse Film- und Fotoaufnahmen für das Familienalbum zu machen. Wir haben um etwa 09.30 Uhr (im Juni, wir haben noch keine Saison) das Hotel und die Grotte noch für uns alleine! 

Nach einer Weile machen wir uns auf gleicher Strecke auf den Rückweg. 

Wer möchte, kann die Tour deutlich ausweiten und vor dem Mittagswind auf die Ostseite des Sees paddeln. Von dort dann am Nachmittag mit Rückenwind wieder zurück zum Startpunkt. Allerdings ist die längere Tour aufgrund der oben beschriebenen Wellen anspruchsvoller. Im Web finden sich zu dieser längeren Tour ebenfalls Beschreibungen (z. Für uns war die Tour zur Grotte mit Wasserfall neben unserer SUP-Tour durch Venedig (hierzu gibt es bereits einen Tourenbeschreibung eines anderen SUP-Scouts: https://supscout.de/blog/sup-erlebnisse/sup-erlebnis-standuppaddeln-durch-venedig/ ) unsere bisher schönste Tour die wir jedem Gardasee-Besucher absolut empfehlen können. 

Als abschließender Hinweis sei angemerkt, dass auf dem Gardasee Schwimmwestenpflicht herrscht. Die Schwimmwesten müssen für SUPer nach DIN EN ISO 12402-5 zugelassen sein. Die Wasserpolizei kontrolliert das Tragen der Westen und verhängt bei Verstößen auch Bußgelder.

Des Weiteren empfehlen wir die Verwendung einer Leash.

Ich bin auch schon von Torbole aus zur beschriebenen Grotte am Hotel , unterhalb der Ponale gefahren. Ich kann nur bestätigen dases sehr schön ist man den Wind aber unbedingt auf dem Schirm haben muss. Im Sommer kommt er aber meistens pünktlich 😉 Tschau und viel Spass

Gibt es dazu auch an offizieller Stelle einen Hinweis über die erforderliche DIN Norm? Wir fahren Ende des Monats an den Gardasee und ich finde immer nur den Hinweis “Schwimmwestenpflicht”. Dieser ist aber nicht genauer definiert.

ich habe dazu auch eine Weile recherchiert und habe letztendlich in einer Facebook-Gruppe einen Hinweis auf einen entsprechenden italienischen Erlass bekommen. Dieser ist natürlich in italienisch verfasst, so dass ich der deutschen Erläuterung des FB- Nutzers geglaubt habe. Der Vollständigkeit halber setze ich den Kommentar hier mal als Zitat ein:

„Hier (siehe Link unten) ist der zugrundeliegende italienische Gesetzestext (Gesetzesdekret vom 4.12.1992, Nr. 475) ausführlich erläutert:

Demnach müssen Schwimmwesten ab einem Abstand von 300 m vom Ufer getragen werden (auf jeden italienischen Gewässer, egal ob See oder Meer!) . Das ganze wird dann noch feiner abgestuft nach Auftriebsklassen. Die Auftriebsklassen werden allerdings – meiner Erfahrung nach – nicht kontrolliert. Lediglich das Tragen einer Schwimmweste wird überprüft. Bei nicht Tragen einer Schwimmweste wird eine Strafgebühr von – meines Wissens – 270,- € erhoben. Dieser Betrag ist direkt vor Ort zu bezahlen“. Zitatende

„Die Klasse DIN 12402-5 gilt auch in Italien – und wenn mein Italienisch nicht vollends eingerostet ist, gilt eine Schwimmweste dieser DIN 12402-5 gerade auch für uns SUP-Paddler.“

bis zu welcher Jahreszeit kann man diese Tour noch machen? Wir überlegen in den Herbstferien Ende Oktober zu fahren.

Hallo Robert, so pauschal kann man das nicht beantworten, da das natürlich wetterabhängig ist. Ich war ja selber nur im Urlaub dort und habe daher witterungstechnisch nur eine Momentaufnahme…

The trip follows along the western shore of lake Garda, viewing characteristic and historic sites such as Limone,  Gargnano (Villa Feltrinelli where Mussolini stayed), the Island of Garda and all the way to Sirmione. Arrival time there is at about  11.15 A.M . and passengers have two hours of free time.

At 1.15 P.M.  the boat leaves Sirmione, viewing the Scaligero Castle and the Catullo Grottos, moving towards the eastern shores of the lake and hugging the coast to Bardolino. The boat docks at Bardolino at  2.00 P.M.  for a one hour and 30 minutes break.

At 3.30 P.M.  departure driving along Punta S. Vigilio, Torri ,  Malcesine and Limone. The arrival back at RIVA  is estimated at about 5.30 P.M.

This tour is for those who have experiencce of sup and gives you the chance to discoveer the wilder and more spectacular shores of Lake Garda directly beneath Mount Rocchetta.

The Rocchetta group forms a striking backdrop on the right-hand shore of Lake Garda. Steep rock walls soar from water level to over 1000 metres, giving Garda Trentino the air of a Nordic fjord. This tour allows you to explore the base of the rock wall as far as Punta Sperone , a rocky bluff sticking out into the lake which hides one of the oldest forts in the old Austro-Hungarian defence system. Garda Trentino was the southernmost border of the empire and guarded as an important strategic position. Just above the lake, you can make out the Ponale Trail which winds up the rock face, dotted here and there with biking and hiking enthusiasts.

Watch outl! In high winds you are advised to sttay at a safe distance from the cliff because of the danger of falling rocks.

In any case it is advisable to take this tour accompanied by a qualified instructor .

Safety Tips

• Inform yourself about wind, water, and weather conditions. In a short time, the wind can change, the swell can increase, and it can start to rain, even with thunderstorms. For this reason, it is important be able to swim even in rough water.
• Inform yourself about local regulations. When in doubt, ask for the advice of specialised guides and local people.
• In case of solo trips, inform someone about your planned itinerary and departure time.
• Only use boats and gear appropriate to your abilities and wear a CE certified lifejacket.
• Maintain the safety distance from public transportation crafts, respect right of way rules and do not cross the course of motorboats to avoid accidents and fines.
• When stand up paddling, always attach your leash, never leave your board, and keep a distance of 500 m from the shore and cliffs from which rocks could break off.

Leave from Purfina in Riva del Garda, entering the water by means of a slipway. Head in the direction of Sperone beach beneath the sheer rock  of Mount Rochetta in all its wild beauty. Rocchetta goes right down to the water on the right-hand side of the lake so the shoreline is dominated by its cliffs. When you get to the beach you can take a break to rehydrate and maybe cool down with a swim.

Now head off in the direction of Riva del Garda and enjoy the beauty of the constantly changing landscape, paddling beneath the cliffs where intrepid climbers are engaged in daring ascents starting from lake level.

Once you get to the underwater statue Cristo del Lago right below the start of the Ponale Trail, paddle around to avoid the harbour area as far as Punta Lido, following Sabbioni beach, until you get back to where you started from.

The main towns in Garda Trentino - Riva del Garda, Arco, Torbole sul Garda, Nago – are connected by several urban and intercity bus lines which will take you to the starting point of tours or in the immediate surroundings.

You can also get to Riva del Garda and Torbole sul Garda by the public ferry service.

In spring and summer you are advised to wear a semi-drysuit, in summer all you need is a swimsuit and lycra suit. You always need to wear a life jacket.
