witcher 1 quick travel

Game crashing when fast travelling to Velen.

Nikola_Niko

Nikola_Niko

As the title says. I just finished the whole castle segment and I've now been prompted to fast travel to Velen. But as soon as i do, and the "animated" cut scene plays, it starts stuttering and then the game crashes. I can fast travel to and within White Orchard without any issues, so it seems it's only Velen that causes the issue. I've tried turning RT off, and even tried running the game in DX11 but it still crashes. I'v even tried re-installing the game. My PC is way beyond the minimun specs sitting at: i9-9900K, 3080ti OC, 64GB RAM. Does anyone know why this is happening? And is there a potential fix for it if someone else has experienced the same thing. I have no mods installed since it's a fresh install.

ship_9

Make sure that in game folder are no mods anymore, uninstalling game doesn't remove mods folder

BigBurken

I also had this issue, removing the mods folder worked for me

Yera9

@BigBurken I had the same issue, this worked for me too. Thanks

@ship_9 Thank you so much, this worked for me! I was confused AF when I couldnt load into Velen on a fresh install. Saw some mod files in the mods folder but thought they were included in the base install. Removing them helped!

So am I just completely unable to proceed in the game without ditching the mods I wish to play with? that seems like a pretty big issue...

I want to revert to an earlier version of the game — The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | Technical Support — CD PROJEKT RED

Every mod I have is "next gen compatible". I spent a while finding a new set of mods for this playthrough on the new version. The problem is that you cannot have any mods in the game folder at all or else the fast travel doesn't work, so it's not a problem of mod compatibility, you just outright can't play next gen update with mods...

Guys it's Phoenix Lighting Mode which is causing the game to crash upon fast travelling to Velen.

Fast travel

  • VisualEditor

The Fast travel system is a mechanic introduced in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt due to the significant increase in explorable areas. It enables Geralt to "teleport" between two already discovered signposts, or to a discovered harbor if he is sailing on a boat. Geralt can also jump to a signpost located in another game region and this takes more loading time.

Additionally, if Geralt wanders to the very edge of the explorable game areas, the map interface will appear allowing him to fast travel to any signpost or harbor (if he is at sea).

The best mods for surviving The Witcher 1

The Witcher is getting on in years, but you can make it through with a few essential mods.

The Witcher mod - Black Edition

  • New adventures

The Witcher 3 - Geralt artwork

The Witcher 4 : What we know The Witcher season 3 : Trailers and cast Witcher 3 mods : Good hunting The Witcher books : Where to start

The Witcher was a bit of a rickety game when it came out in 2007. It's rougher around the edges than its sequels in some ways that are charming, and in some that were frustrating then and are only more frustrating now. Like many older games, there are some essential mods that make the experience more bearable for the new decade. The Witcher's selection of mods is relatively small, as most fans moved on to working on The Witcher 3 mods . But there are some vital ones. You can still play and enjoy The Witcher today, though be warned that getting the Enhanced Edition to play nicely with Windows 10 can be a chore. Personally, I've had better luck using GOG over Steam.

Mods for The Witcher come in a few categories: visual updates, gameplay mods that either add features or fix old bugs, and new adventures created with the D'jinni adventure editor that comes packed-in with the game. We've collected the best Witcher mods for you below.

How to install The Witcher mods

Using mods for The Witcher is still mostly a manual process. You'll need to find the install directory for The Witcher and open up its "Data" folder. There you'll make a new folder and call it "Override."

Most mods will have you throw files in the Override folder totally loose rather than in subfolders. A select few will go in Data. Several mods on this list all replace the same files, so you may have to closely manage which you save to the directory first and which you allow to overwrite one another. Some recommend brewing your Override folder on your desktop before actually putting it back in the install directory.

Because there's so much manual work to do and loose files flying about, you'll probably want to treat modding The Witcher as a "set it and forget it" affair where you get a combo of mods you like and don't change them. Concocting a new mix of mods will probably involve starting from scratch or unravelling a mess of files like a tangled necklace.

Witcher 1 visual mods

Visual mods for The Witcher range from small fixes, like adding catlike eyes for every witcher in the game, to giant overhauls for every character and interface. There's only so much lipstick that can be put on an old game like The Witcher so you won't find anything here that brings it up to par with The Witcher 3, of course.

The Witcher Overhaul Project

Best Witcher 1 mods - An outdoor screenshot showcasing the Overhaul Project up-rezzed textures

Download from: Nexus Mods

The biggest gaming news, reviews and hardware deals

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

According to its creator, this overhaul mod updates about 80 percent of The Witcher's textures at double their original resolutions. It also adds some new audio files, though you may find the Skyrim sounds used for quest sound effects jarring when you're exploring Temeria instead of Tamriel. You'll want to manually get rid of the .wav files that begin with "quest" in the downloaded folders to axe them.

The Witcher Texturen Mod

Best Witcher 1 mods - An outdoor screenshot showing the Texturen mod's graphical improvements

Download from: ModDB

Unlike the Overhaul Project, the Texturen mod is a bit older and doesn't actually increase the resolution of The Witcher's textures. Instead they've been sharpened. The creator released a new installer (in English finally!) in 2019 so you'll find it a bit easier to get running. The installer has a painfully bright pink background that will hurt your eyes. You've been warned. The Texturen mod covers The Witcher's environments but none of the characters. To upgrade all the NPCs, grab the Hi-Res Character Models below.

The Witcher: Hi-Res Character Models

Best Witcher 1 mods - Before-and-after screenshots of an NPC with improved model and texture fidelity

The Hi-Res Character Models mod pairs well with Texturen. Neither actually increase the resolution of the game's files but have a sharper look that feels higher resolution. To a sharp eye, it may accentuate imperfections in the original textures. For most folks though, this is an easy way to give an updated look to an old game. Nothing can fix Zoltan's face, unfortunately. Even sharper textures can't help that mug.

The Witcher: Black Edition

Best Witcher 1 mods - Geralt's darkened armor in the Black Edition mod

The Black Edition mod won't fit everyone's taste but it's a large overhaul that recolors The Witcher's interface, a few characters, and Geralt's armor.  Almost everything is reimagined in black and red. Except the women of The Witcher who are distinctly less red. The mod author felt that the original Witcher game had too great a fixation on redheads and changed both Shani and Triss into brunettes. Oddly, they've also swapped out Geralt's face scar with a "wolverine style" one which is certainly a choice.

The Rise of the White Wolf

Rise of the White Wolf is another big overhaul that redesigns The Witcher's UI and all of its characters. While the new UI isn't particularly in keeping with the spirit of the original the way Black Edition does, RotWW does actually redesign all of the Witcher's characters instead of just marginally improving their textures. Triss gets a new outfit based on her Wild Hunt appearance. Morenn the dryad gets a lot less green. Zoltan is... no, Zoltan is still horrifically bug-eyed.

Natural Shani

Best Witcher 1 mods - The visual and outfit improvements from the Natural Shani mod

As an alternative to the big character overhauls above, Natural Shani just redesigns our favorite young medic. It's derivative of the work of a few other modders who also redesigned Shani whose mods are no longer available. As the creator says, it's a bit odd that a working woman like Shani would be running around in a minidress every day. This mod gives Shani some sleeves and leggings beneath her dress that look like she might actually be able to see patients in.

Text size increase for high resolutions

Best Witcher 1 mods - The Text size increase mod makes in-game text more legible on high-res screens

This mod is for the 4k gamers of the world struggling to read all of The Witcher's tiny text at a resolution it wasn't designed for. Now the letters are bigger. Hurray!

Scabbard Mod

Best Witcher 1 mods - Thanks to the Scabbard mod, Geralt stands with his swords safely tucked in sheaths

If you ever found it odd that Geralt just carries both his swords open on his back, the Scabbard Mod fixes that problem for you. All of Geralt's possible weapons have their own properly-shaped sheath now. The creator mentions that The Witcher was originally meant to have sword scabbards but they were removed because Geralt's animations would create clipping issues between swords and their sheaths. It's a minor inconvenience for a neat addition.

Complete Sword Overhaul

Best Witcher 1 mods - Geralt brandishes a retextured sword from the Complete sword overhaul mod

Another for the sword lovers is the Complete Sword Overhaul which adds new models to differentiate many of Geralt's swords. You can use this mod with both the Scabbard Mod and the Full Combat Rebalance but you'll need to pay close attention to the instructions and patches on the Sword Overhaul page to make sure they all play together nicely.

Geralt face retexture

Best Witcher 1 mods - Geralt's better-realized, less-baffled face in the Geralt face retexture mod

This retexture, among other things, makes Geralt look less perpetually perplexed than he does in the vanilla version of The Witcher. Eyebrows make all the difference.

Perfect Blood

Best Witcher 1 mods - Geralt in combat, his opponents thoroughly bloodied thanks to the Perfect Blood mod

The Perfect Blood mod looks to add some additional realism to The Witcher's combat. It adds wounds to enemies as you strike them relative to how much damage you've done. It also makes all the gory blood splatter look just a bit fresher than in vanilla Witcher. You'll also need the fix created by another modder below.

Fix for Perfect Blood

Best Witcher 1 mods - A screenshot of Geralt after combat, screen splashed with mod-enabled gore

Perfect Blood hasn't been updated in some time and—though it apparently has some file issues—still remains a favorite. Another creator has uploaded a fix for Perfect Blood to make sure you can keep using it.

Catlike Eyes For All Witchers

Best Witcher 1 mods - A Witcher's catlike eyes

It is a bit odd that Geralt is the only witcher with cat-like eyes, right? Shouldn't Vesemir, Lambert, and the others have witcher eyes as well? This mod replaces all the other witchers' round pupils with vertical ones.

Witcher 1 gameplay mods and fixes

Gameplay mods and fixes for The Witcher help to fix some notorious old bugs, overhaul combat, and make a few more lighthearted changes as well.

Full Combat Rebalance

Best Witcher 1 mods - Geralt faces a foe in rebalanced combat from the Full Combat Rebalance mod

Full Combat Rebalance adds some extra difficulty to The Witcher's swordplay. It overhauls the skill tree and how damage is calculated between swords and armor sets. It can also make enemies scarcer but scarier if you want more tense combat. Its installer also lumps in a few other mods for convenience: cat pupils for all witchers, stacking inventory items up to 999, and the visible wounds mod that's also included with Perfect Blood.

Sex Takes Time Mod

Best Witcher 1 mods - Paired screenshots showing the passage of time after one of Geralt's romantic forays, thanks to the Sex takes time mod

This may not be the most glaring inaccuracy in The Witcher, but one mod author took issue with the fact that Geralt and the ladies he sleeps with never seemed to go anywhere or take any time to do the deed. Now after each encounter Geralt and his lover are moved to a more appropriate "after" location, have a line or so of dialogue to acknowledge their time together, and the game's time actually moves forward a bit. Oh, and Geralt's potion toxicity goes down after too.

Missing Kalkstein and Leuvaarden Clues Fix

Best Witcher 1 mods - Kalkstein and Leuvaarden

This mod is a quick fix to a quest in Act II of The Witcher that often causes problems. With this, you'll be able to get all the clues you need to progress.

Han Gives Han NOT Berbercane

Best Witcher 1 mods - Geralt standing next to a Han plant in a sunlit field

The Han plant in The Witcher is notorious for giving the wrong ingredient when picked. If you want Han Fibers from your wild Han because they're vital to your potion strategy, make sure to install this fix.

Talar will always Survive

Best Witcher 1 mods - Talar, currently surviving

Does it bug you that Talar can die in The Witcher 1 and then, as if nothing happened, come back in both sequels? Talar is now a survivor.

New Witcher 1 adventures

New adventures for The Witcher are made with the D'jinni Adventure Editor that comes with the game. Modders have created lengthy additional quests for the game that add new NPCs, stories, quests, and locations. Below are a few interesting choices for expanded questing. You can find more over on ModDB , where they're relatively easy to pick out of the small selection of 30 or so The Witcher mods listed.

Merry Witchmas

Best Witcher 1 mods - Geralt meditates before a cheerful hearth near a Christmas tree

Merry Witchmas is a fan-made adventure that was eventually folded into The Witcher itself. The mod authors say they've made additional changes, though, and downloading the most recent mod build is still preferable.

And a Curse, and Love, and Betrayal

Best Witcher 1 mods - A spell is cast on a cursed peasant

Curse, Love, and Betrayal sends the witcher looking for his lover Yennefer. Along the way he takes two contracts in a small town to remove a curse from a woman's lover and to clean up the local mine. Curse, Love, and Betrayal says that it includes 10-12 hours of new questing leading to multiple different endings with a couple new music tracks to boot. Substantial!

The Crossroads

Best Witcher 1 mods - A shockingly ripped bandit from The Crossroads Witcher 1 mod

The Crossroads is a mod that redecorates the village of Murky Waters into the setting of a grim conflict between two bandit factions. Despite being stranded by Roach's death, Geralt gets in the middle of the town-wide conflict.

Deception

Best Witcher 1 mods - In the Deception mod, Geralt stands on a darkened village street

As usual, Dandelion is in trouble and Geralt is the one to get him out again. He'll need to save the wayward bard from a hanging and also defend the town of Carreas from invading fleders.

The Witcher 4 is 'the largest' game in development at CD Projekt 'by the size of the team, but also by the progress of ongoing work'

The game is centered around Geralt of Rivia , who is found unconscious and suffering from amnesia at the beginning of the game. He gradually learns that he was a renowned witcher , and that he has friends and enemies almost everywhere (who do not suffer from amnesia...). Through the player's actions, he will redefine those relationships and choose his path in the political intrigue that surrounds him.

choose Geralt's path

In the game, Geralt will be forced to choose his path. There are three primary paths available to him. In this wiki, they will be referred to as follows:

Items Squirrel tail

The Scoia'tael path (with the squirrel puff icon): on this path, Geralt allies himself with fellow non-humans, the Elves .

Logo Order of the Flaming Rose

The Order path (with the Flaming rose insignia icon): on this path, Geralt allies himself with the Order of the Flaming Rose, whose mission is to protect the citizens of Temeria .

Witcher medallion

The Witcher / neutral path (with the witcher medallion icon): on this path (most in line with Geralt's personality from The Witcher series ), Geralt sides with neither the Scoia'tael nor the Order - either to maintain 'witcher neutrality' (referred to several times in the game, presumably referring to politics) or simply to do what he feels is right. (Whatever the reasoning, only the witcher's closest friends will understand - let alone agree with - this path.)

Prologue ( Kaer Morhen ) [ ]

Loading KM gate day

Geralt starts his adventure in the citadel of Kaer Morhen where bandits attack led by two shady characters, the Professor and a mysterious mage . The player eventually learns that they are part of a criminal organization called the Salamandra , and that they are after some special potions and equipment which were developed to genetically alter witchers to give them their powers. What they want with those potions is unclear.

The chapter ends as the Professor and the mage teleport out of Kaer Morhen with the potions. The remaining witchers and allied characters decide to split up and search for information about the Salamandra to eventually stop them.

This chapter opens introducing Alvin , an unusual child whose path will repeatedly cross Geralt's. Hot on the trail of the mysterious men with Salamander badges, our witcher explores the outskirts of Vizima, where a terrifying beast harasses the villagers by night. The witcher encounters old friends (whom he doesn't recognize at first) and makes connections with locals while seeking a way into the city, even finding a hint or two about the fate of his fellow witcher Berengar . After striving to gain the trust of several prominent locals and perhaps dealing with a few less-than-prominent ones, Geralt manages to get through the Miller's Gate into Vizima proper - though not on his own terms.

There are two trophy quests in this and each subsequent chapter.

Geralt now has access to the Temple Quarter , where he will have to solve a mystery. Who sent assassins after him? Who is involved with the Salamandra? Several influential people in the city are suspects, and Geralt has the help of the private investigator to sort through the clues and follow up on them.

Note that Geralt no longer has access to the Outskirts in this chapter, but he gains access to the Temple Quarter , part of the Vizima sewers , the Vizima dike , the Vizima cemetery , and the Swamp .

Important: The choice of whether to bring Alvin to Triss or Shani may alter the events in the remaining chapters.

Note that Geralt still has access to the areas he had access to in the second chapter, and he additionally gains access to the Trade Quarter as well as new areas of the Vizima sewers .

Chapter IV ( Lakeside ) [ ]

Geralt now finds himself in a totally new area of Temeria, far from Vizima and cut off from most of the people he knew. Dandelion and Alvin are with him though, as is Abigail (if Geralt saves her from the villagers in Chapter I, otherwise the village healer is an old woman) and there are new intrigues around him. Depending on the choice made in Chapter I, the resolution to The Heat of the Day quest is different.

The chapter ends with a showdown between the Order of the Flaming Rose and the Scoia'tael , where Geralt must finally declare his chosen path and act accordingly.

Note that Geralt no longer has access to the areas he had access to in any of the previous Chapters. He can now explore the areas of Lakeside , Murky Waters village, the Fields and Black Tern Island .

Geralt fought with the Scoia'tael in their battle with Flaming Rose forces in Murky Waters . Now Vizima is burning, the conflict taking more and more casualties. Geralt meets Zoltan Chivay once again, and must help him and the refugees flee Old Vizima for the relative safety of the swamp cemetery . King Foltest has returned just as his daughter Adda seems to be having a relapse of her Striga curse. Geralt must do what he can for the princess; in return, Foltest will divulge what he knows about the Salamandra hideout so that Geralt can finally deal with Azar Javed .

Order path [ ]

Geralt fights for the Order in the conflict between the Order of the Flaming Rose and the Scoia'tael in Murky Waters . But Vizima now burns, the conflict taking more and more casualties. Geralt meets Rayla once again, and must help her in Old Vizima and get to Siegfried who lies wounded in the field hospital. At the same time, King Foltest returns and his daughter Adda seems to be having a relapse of the Striga curse. Geralt must do what he can for the princess, and in return, Foltest will divulge what he knows about the Salamandra hideout , and as a result, Azar Javed 's location

Choosing the Order path means that Zoltan is rather miffed at Geralt, and he must find an Order armorer.

Witcher / Neutral path [ ]

Geralt does not escape the conflict between the Order of the Flaming Rose and the Scoia'tael in Murky Waters but ends up having to fight both sides. But Vizima now burns, the conflict taking more and more casualties. Geralt meets some nurses who are trying to get to Shani at the field hospital. The witcher must then also help Shani get out of Old Vizima to the swamp cemetery to get medicine from the druids . At the same time, King Foltest returns and his daughter Adda seems to be having a relapse of the Striga curse. Geralt must do what he can for the princess, and in return, Foltest will divulge what he knows about the Salamandra hideout , and as a result, Azar Javed 's location.

It is revealed that Grand Master Jacques de Aldersberg was behind Salamandra all along, using it and Azar Javed to build an army of mutants, overthrow Foltest and take the throne. With Javed dead, the Grand Master will be expecting Geralt's visit.

Foltest and Radovid agree to use their armies to attack the Order of the Flaming Rose. Geralt is given permission to eradicate the Grand Master and any of his servants.

Yaevinn asks for freedom for the elves, and King Foltest acknowledges him cautiously, stating that he will only pardon those who lay down their arms. Foltest recommends that Yaevinn leave the kingdom, a symbolic gesture allowing people to perceive the banishment as punishment for his crimes during the uprising. Foltest then promises Geralt that he will protect the witcher's friends from harm and not pursue Yaevinn terribly vigorously.

Geralt and Yaevinn confront Siegfried shortly thereafter. Siegfried calls Geralt inhuman and expresses regret for not killing him when they first met. Siegfried dies.

Geralt and Yaevinn are then ushered into a safe house, where characters from various chapters and locations are hiding. Golan Vivaldi pities himself, stating that both the Order and the Scoia'tael loathe him and consider him a traitor. Vaska is unhappy about war spreading to her village. The Hermit wanted to give advice to King Foltest, but did not arrive in time. The novice nun reminds Geralt of the prophecy of Ithlinne, stating that the world is near its end. Carmen is also there, if Geralt previously killed Vincent . In the cellar, Vetala and the resolute girl from Lakeside idle. Geralt and Yaevinn proceed through the cellar into a monster-infested basement. Upstairs from there, a madman advises them to exit through his window.

Another fight ensues outside, and Geralt takes a key from a wounded Order knight. Geralt and Yaevinn descend into the sewer where they face another tough monster, the zeugl .

After traveling through dire sewers, Geralt and Yaevinn finally reach the cloister where the Grand Master resides. Yaevinn is wounded and tells the witcher to go on without him.

Siegfried convinces Foltest that the Order can remain loyal to the king despite de Aldersberg's actions, and Foltest names him the new Grand Master. Geralt and Siegfried confront the remaining knights of the Order shortly after.

Geralt and Siegfried are then ushered into a safe house, where characters from various chapters and locations are hiding. Golan Vivaldi pities himself stating that both the Order and the Scoia'tael loathe him and consider him a traitor. Vaska is unhappy about war spreading to her village. Geralt and Siegfried proceed through the cellar into a monster-infested basement. Upstairs from there, a madman advises them to exit through his window.

They meet Yaevinn outside. The elf is disgusted with Geralt and they duel. Yaevinn dies. Geralt then takes a key from a wounded Order knight. Geralt and Siegfried descend into the sewer where they face another tough monster, the zeugl .

Geralt and Siegfried finally reach the cloister where the Grand Master resides. Siegfried is wounded and tells the witcher to go on without him.

Geralt arrives back in the Temple Quarter with Triss Merigold and informs the king of his findings.

Geralt and Triss confront Siegfried shortly after; Geralt chooses whether to kill or spare the knight.

Geralt and Triss go to a shelter, where Golan Vivaldi , Vaska, the Hermit, and the novice nun have gathered. Vivaldi pities himself, stating that both the Order and the Scoia'tael loathe him. Vaska is unhappy about war spreading to her village. The Hermit states that he wanted to give advice to King Foltest, but did not arrive in time. The novice nun reminds Geralt of the prophecy of Ithlinne, stating that the world is near its end. Carmen is also there, if Geralt previously killed Vincent . In the cellar, Vetala and the resolute girl from the Lakeside idle. Geralt and Triss leave through the cellar, into a monster-infested basement. Upstairs from there, a madman advises them to exit through his window.

Geralt meets Yaevinn outside and has the opportunity to kill or spare him, as with Siegfried earlier. More fighting occurs either way; then Triss says they must descend into the sewer. There is no wounded knight to give them a key - Triss has it already.

After traveling through dire sewers and dispatching the zeugl , Geralt and Triss finally reach the cloister where the Grand Master resides. At this point, Geralt uses a ruse to ditch Triss so he can go on alone.

The Paths converge [ ]

From this point, no matter which path Geralt has chosen, he goes on alone. When Geralt finds the Grand Master, it is revealed that everything he has done was to save humanity from the inevitable "Great White Frost" ( Ithlinne's Prophecy ). All his life, he was plagued by visions of what the future of humanity would look like if nothing was done. His solution was simple: he would become their savior.

To achieve this, de Aldersberg had recently developed mutants known as Greater Brothers, who had all the strength and skill of a witcher, without the sentimentality. These mutants would shepherd Believers on an exodus to the south, thereby saving them from the dire predictions. Geralt quite rightly remarks at that point that every megalomaniac speaks of a "higher purpose". And with the help of the friends he has made during the course of the story, Geralt makes it through the Grand Master's vision and ends his plans.

Geralt's final choice involves a demand from the King of the Wild Hunt for the Grand Master's soul.

Note: In the Epilogue, Geralt no longer has access to any areas in Chapter V. He is now back in the Temple Quarter , to be teleported to the Ice Plains , and finally back to the Cloister courtyard.

Ending cinematic [ ]

In the end, Geralt is seen accepting his reward for dispatching the Grand Master and his mutants. As the White Wolf nears the palace doors, he notices the corpses of the drowsy guards shown in the beginning of the cinematic. He draws his sword and rushes for the king's study, finding Foltest under attack by a lone assassin. A fight ensues between the Witcher and the unknown assailant, and the latter is starting to get the better of the former... until the newly acquired coin purse is used for a distraction, allowing Geralt to sever an arm. The would-be murderer is unmasked: it is an unfamiliar face... with very familiar eyes (witcher's eyes).
