8 Things to know before your Salon Appointment

Be fore your appointment here are 8 things you should know or prepare so you get the most out of your visit!

1.Bring In Photos The more pictures you can bring in, the more we can hone in on the vibe, texture, and colour you want. Have a look at our Instagrams and Pinterest for finding inspiration on the style you're searching for. Remember that while you may not get  exactly  what any picture shows (because your hair may have a different texture, etc.), they a great help in guiding your stylist to the best option for your hair and lifestyle. 

2.Dress with confidence Come into the salon wearing the make-up/attire that make you feel the most confident.  This is especially important if it's your first visit and you're getting a colour. When you get your hair done, you want to see it freshly colored, cut, and styled on a canvas that best represents you. We are not saying you have to dress up for us! But dressing as you normally would will help guide your stylist in making sure your hair is well suited to your every day lifestyle.

3.Hair Care At Home Is Important If you're not protecting your hair at home, you're making your life harder than it should be. Using the correct products for your hair type, prolongs the Salon life of your hair. Professional hair products are highly concentrated, meaning you have to use less product in your hair to achieve the results you want.  At the start of your appointment is your consultation where your stylist will diagnose your hair and recommend what type of products you should be using. 

4.Prepare to declare  We are NOT here to judge. During your consultation we will ask about your hair history - be truthful about what you have used and use regularly. (For example, if you used a box-dye to go Blonde, then added some purple tips and then dyed it all brown.)  This will determine what kind and how strong of a product your hair stylist will be using for your colour. If you lie and say your hair is virgin hair, there's a possibility of very unwanted results happening.

5.Corrective Colour Takes Time It happens - a box-dye has gone wrong and you need a professional rescue, it might be a big, expensive project. Make it clear what has happened, what you want to have happen (bring pictures!), and for the best results, schedule a free consultation before your appointment so that all parties know what will go down.

6.It's a Hair Journey. Your desired result may not be achievable with just one visit to the salon.   If you have dark brown or black hair, and want to go silver or pastel, it's gonna take a lot of love and a lot of work.  If you have ever dyed your hair dark, even if it was years ago, the ends are not virgin hair. If you have dyed it more than once, you have layers of color that need to come off. Trying to force your hair to go lighter too quickly will damage your hair and will leave you with a big expensive colour correction job - see point number 5 Your stylist will advise you on how often you will need to leave your hair in-between appointments and how to look after your hair at home so the journey is as smooth and enjoyable. 

7.Treat your Hair Well Protecting your hair from damage is key to maintaining healthy hair. We offer intensive Hair Repair as add ons with your colour service to protect and nourish your hair during the colour process. Using a once a week intensive at-home treatment will also prolong the salon life of your hair between appointments. Ask during your consultation for the types of products that match your hair type. 

8.Plan Accordingly We have limited availability, so if you are running late on the day call the Salon ASAP.  If you are more than 15 minutes late for your booking, we may not be able to perform your complete service or may need to rebook as it can affect other client bookings.  ​ We do our best to accommodate last minute changes, however if we are fully booked with clients we unfortunately won't be able to go ahead with a booking. ​ If you are a no-show you may be asked to pay a 50% deposit for your next scheduled appointment.

Salon Dictionary: The Real Differences Between All The Color Techniques

When you walk into a salon, you’ll probably overhear a number of terms that sound like a completely different language, or the secret code of an elite club, at the very least. Fear not: we happen to know an incredible interpreter, of the celebrity hair colorist variety. We called up Rita Hazan—who has tousled the tresses of superstars like Beyonce and Katy Perry—and asked her to teach us laypeople a lesson in hair color terminology.

No need to simply nod along at your next salon visit, here is Hazan’s breakdown of everything hair color.

Meet the Expert

Rita Hazan is a celebrity hairstylist and colorist with an eponymous Fifth Avenue hair salon. She also has her own line of signature hair color care products. Her celebrity clients include Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, and Katy Perry.

Balayage: The process of painting on highlights directly to the hair without using foil. With this technique , the colored sections will be placed artfully around the head, delivering the look of naturally sun-kissed strands.

Foiling: Using actual aluminum foil for highlighting and lowlighting certain pieces of hair. Foils are ideal for achieving a more uniform look with color that starts at the root.

Color Correction: Any time you need to drastically fix a bad color or you want to drastically change your color.

Color Filler: Used prior to color application to protect and equalize the differences in areas of damaged hair for even color results. It’s also used to correct or neutralize existing tones.

Soap Cap: A process done at the sink that uses bleach to remove color buildup or a toner/gloss/glaze.

Glaze/Gloss/Toner: All the same—just different ways of saying it. Applied after color, this treatment leaves hair shiny and with the color in the proper tone of the desired shade. 

What Is Hair Toner?

Hair toner is a tinted solution that is ammonia-based, and is designed to neutralize tinted tones (like brassy and yellow) on bleached hair. Toners adjust the undertone of the hair and can make blonde hair look "cooler" in nature.

Color vs. Double Process Color: Color is a single process, roots only application. Double process color is a single process, which means changing the “base” of your color, plus highlights.

Partial Highlight vs. Full Highlight: With a partial highlight, color is applied to the hairline and crown of the head. A full highlight covers the entire head.

Demi-Permanent Color vs. Semi-Permanent Color: Both are non-peroxide colors, so they will fade and eventually wash out. Semi-permanent color is more translucent, while demi-permanent is more opaque.

While our modern society has experienced innumerable advances over the past few centuries, it has put into question whether our relationships and social connections have evolved for the better. The relatively new ability to hide behind screens and social media accounts and online discourse via digital public platforms about politics and social issues have created division between the best of friends and close family members. The convenience of texting and a plethora of social apps to communicate with makes in-person conversations between friends, family, and colleagues fewer and far between, something the pandemic hasn't helped.

As our world is still in disarray from the pandemic, we have to be mindful of the ways we gather. However, our world is also desperate for in-person conversations and emotional connections, creating a need to step outside of our typical hosting boxes. It's time to think beyond the cocktail party and bring back the salon experience that originated in the 17th century as a lively (and live) social gathering that evolved into a safe place to debate, collaborate, learn, and expand one's perspective. No Facebook login or iPhone required.

A Brief History of the Salon

By the 18th century, the salon had developed into a more refined experience, in light of the political revolutions on the rise across Western Europe and the then–New World. These salons discussed everything from the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution (the French were on the brink of their own revolution) to the future of art. The innovative minds paving the way in the New World, like Benjamin Franklin, who often joined these salon discussions when in Paris, along with burgeoning creatives of the day like Victor Hugo.

One thing hadn't changed, however, and that was the tradition of a female hostess, opening the door to women becoming part of political, social, and artistic discourse and being seen as intellectual equals to men. These salon experiences were also expanding in location and invitees. Cities across Western Europe were bringing their own great minds together to discuss an array of important topics, while intellect and wit were becoming more of a priority for invitations than wealth and title. The Enlightenment found traction among the salon circles and created a new public sphere for a more inclusive elite than ever before on gender and socioeconomic levels.

The first half of the 20th century saw a rising interest in salons on America's coasts, with the last great salon taking place in the home of actress-turned-screenwriter Salka Viertel's Los Angeles home in the '40s. Viertel hosted a range of immigrant talents in the film and music industry, from actress Greta Garbo to composer Arnold Schonberg.

The art of the salon was soon lost, but its role in revolutionizing society and fostering deeper relationships is making the experience more relevant than ever.

Bringing the Salon Back to Our Modern-Day Social Calendars

"I think there hasn't been anything like a true salon taking place in a while," says PR- company-CEO-turned-lifestyle expert Susan MacTavish Best. "There's a great article from David Brooks that discusses the idea of individualism versus community and how American history has shifted to the time of the individual now, especially with social media and personal branding. However, war times are all about the good of a community, and we are currently coming out of a war in a sense, and it's a great time to restore that connection."

Best is on the forefront of bringing back the salon experience across the world, namely in the U.S. Best hosts salons with topics ranging from the microbiome to NFTs to the return of live music in 2021 and is making it her mission to equip other curious and creative minds to open their homes to a diverse group of new friends, ideas, and perspectives. Her company, Posthoc , works with companies and nonprofit organizations to host salons with the purpose of generating new ideas, stimulating outside collaboration, and expanding their professional and social networks.

"I started my own PR agency in Silicon Valley when I was just 23, and everything I did was from my one-bedroom apartment," says Best. "I cooked and made cocktails and everything was done over food and drink in my own home. I did this a few times a week for 20 years, and my home just became a hub where deals were done and interesting people would hang out. I'd been hosting salons for years without realizing it."

After building a diverse network of artists, journalists, venture capitalists, and everyone in between, Best launched into the next phase of her career, offering her salon expertise; covet-worthy social networks across L.A., San Francisco, New York City, and London; and her culinary skills to help companies, communities, and organizations foster real change. She works with them for a minimum of a year, as she believes you can't build lasting community in a random, one-off event. And she says, as an individual, there has never been a better time to grow your role as an active community member than right now.

How to Host a Salon at Home

"It has been such a terrible time for people this past year, and now seems like the time to bring people together, but in a way that means much more than a perfect dinner party for 12 people with the perfect setting and perfectly pressed linen napkins," says Best. "I love a dinner party and collect tableware, but we need more of these driven conversations that are more focused on learning from each other and asking questions and occur on a regular basis."

Here, Best's top tips for hosting your own salon that will have you wondering why you never tried your hand at it before.

Tap into Your Community to Decide on a Topic of Discussion

The most intimidating part of salon hosting may be your first step: choosing the topic of discussion for the evening. Best says this doesn't have to be complicated and advises finding inspiration from thinking through what's happening in the world or within your community right now, concepts your circle of friends is interested in, or even a topic you aren't well-versed on and wish you knew more about.

"My recommendation is to always be reading and aware of your surroundings," says Best. "If you're not a curious person, a salon is not for you. If you're doing this to social climb, just host a dinner party, but if you have a real point of view and want to learn, this is a great way to do so. What are people talking about? What's of interest? Tap into your friends and community to figure that out."

Lean into Local Experts and Talent

Once you've tapped into your network for what the topic du jour will be, Best advises leaning in further to your greater community to find the right local expert to facilitate thoughtful, intelligent discussion. Whether it's a local professor, author, artist, or entrepreneur, take some time to research and connect with your desired facilitator to make sure they are the right fit for the evening.

"I love knowing their backstory ahead of time so I can weave it into questions throughout the night," says Best. "I usually ask my expert five questions that range from their point of view on the subject of discussion to their professional experiences and what they did for Sunday dinners growing up." Best is adamant that a salon is not just about stimulating a completely intellectual discussion; it is also about creating an emotional connection with the people you have gathered together.

Best also enjoys supporting local musicians and hiring them to play throughout the evening, be it a DJ or a string quartet. She says especially now, as artists have suffered so much without in-person performance opportunities, this is another great way to give back to the community while plugging yourself and your guests deeper into the creative network within your city or neighborhood.

Curate a Well-Balanced, Diverse Guest List

Speaking of the people you've gathered, you'll need to throw out your typical dinner or cocktail party criteria of who to invite when it comes to hosting a salon. In order to stimulate the best possible conversation and create lasting connection, Best advises stepping outside your network a bit in order to make the night magical.

"I try to get three generations of people there," says Best. "You could come across multi-generations in church and more tight-knit communities back in the day, and as our society values those things less, we have to work harder to find that kind of dimensional community." While she is used to hosting 100+ guests at salons [prior to the pandemic], Best recommends inviting 8 to 12 people to your first salon and reassessing how you want your next one to grow in size from there, if at all.

Best notes that hosting salons becomes a self-fulfilling exercise, in that as you start putting these on and leaning into your curiosity, you will also become more curious and open to meeting different kinds of people across varied backgrounds and professions. This isn't a dinner party where you want to put your best foot forward for your boss, their partner, and a few colleagues. This is a place where intellect, curiosity, and wit is valued over wealth and power.

"A salon will not be exciting if it's just full of journalists or doctors. You have to build an eclectic list," says Best. "Of course, this means also taking a look at one's own life and current role in your community along the way."

Plan an Exciting Yet Approachable Menu

Now for the fun and familiar, if you're a seasoned hostess: planning the menu! Best stresses the importance of ditching fussy food, a catering company, and precious bubbly for your salon. Though she understands not everyone enjoys spending countless hours in the kitchen, Best says there is something about preparing (or even simply plating) dishes for your guests that lowers any pretenses that your salon is a stuffy affair and puts guests more at ease with themselves and others.

"I've worked with a lot of billionaires, along with students and artists, who are really smart, and both are valued here," says Best. "Cooking food that you're about to serve takes away a lot of the pretentiousness. People wont be so jerky if you're cooking in front of them. You're literally breaking bread thats been made for you by the host. Be seen putting things out and handing it to them. It's not about standing around and being the most beautiful in the room."

While she prepares most of the menu in advance, there are always a few tasks Best saves for the day of. Since she often hosts on Monday or Tuesday nights, Best takes some time on Sunday to prepare a cocktail and a dish or two while saving simple activities like filling spring rolls or putting a salad together for the day of—even at the start time of the salon.

"I recommend some mindless cooking while people are there because its a lot to talk to people for an hour before you even begin the interview and discussion portion," says Best. "This keeps you occupied and gets a few people involved."

Best always ensures a few snacks are set out for guests to nibble on as they pour their first drink and get comfortable. For the meal, she advises leaning into elevated comfort food favorites, like a fancy mac and cheese or venison and wild boar meatballs to make everyone feel at home and at ease before the discussion begins.

Rely on a Few Trusted Guests to Make the Night Easy, Breezy

Because Best likes to finish her cooking at the start of the evening and actively serve guests their meal, she relies on a few veteran salon friends to arrive early and help her welcome guests and get the party started. Let them know about the new acquaintance you invited from the gym who may not know anyone or the guest speaker who also loves the Red Sox. That takes the pressure off you to use all your emotional and mental energy too soon while still ensuring connections are made and guests will be happy.

Once guests have had a drink or two and everyone has at least filled their plates, the interview portion begins, and these trusted guests can also help everyone settle and find a comfortable place to enjoy the upcoming discussion. Best will spend 25 to 45 minutes introducing and interviewing the night's guest speaker before the group discussion really begins, and these trusted guests can help ensure the conversation is started (and continues flowing) through the night.

"All the oversubscribing of our schedules and working 14-hour days is extremely short-sighted because nothing replaces locking eyes and making that emotional connection," says Best. "People need to take more control back of their lives and be active community members and participants in their own lives. Salons offer this by helping us prioritize connection, conversation, and community."

What do we mean when we say "sober" now?

Nearly 90 years ago, when Bill Wilson and Bob Smith joined forces to create the program that would become known as Alcoholics Anonymous, there was no O'Doul's section in the beverage aisle. There was no word for trading in one’s alcohol consumption for weed, no designation of “California sober.” The first month of the year was not also known as Dryuary. Now, however, we’re consuming less alcohol than our parents and grandparents did , and exploring what it means to be sober curious more. But sobriety isn’t what it used to be. 

“My science-backed view is that alcohol problems are massively heterogeneous, hugely complex, nuanced, and individual,” said  Dr. James Morris, Chair of the New Directions in the Study of Alcohol Group at London South Bank University . “But the models, the terms and ideas that we have around them are very limited and categorical, and siphon people into certain stereotypes or ideas like abstinence or rock bottom or only sobriety, etc.”

“I'm by no means anti-abstinence or anti-sobriety," Morris said. "It’s such an important thing, and it's the healthiest choice. But I am against excluding other ways of changing drinking patterns, or allowing people to explore their drinking in ways that don't necessarily siphon them off into these very strongly kind of labeled ideas.” 

Morris has been doing intriguing research into the language we use around sobriety and alcoholism, and the potential positive benefits for some to embrace a more fluid perspective.

“For people that engage with self-identification, my view is that reflects a really strong commitment to recovery,” he said. “That process of recovery involves an identity shift away from protecting and valuing drinking as a positive identity to replacing that with like a recovery identity.”

In contrast, Morris said, “For some groups of heavy drinkers, a continuum model means that they don't really have to engage in that identity shift. They can consider some of the consequences of their alcohol use without having to think about, ‘What does this mean for how I position my identity?’” 

“Just like everything else in culture, people need to understand that sobriety is in a period of flux right now,” said  Sarah Hepola , author of the bestselling “Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget.” “Bill Wilson gets going with AA, and so the one thing that everyone can agree on is if you don't drink, you can smoke the s**t out of cigarettes. Nicotine is a gnarly drug. And, how are you going to navigate a world if your lines of demarcation for de-escalating your addiction to a substance run along legality lines? Well, you're moving away from cigarettes, which are increasingly banned in spaces, and you're moving toward things like marijuana, psychedelics, all sorts of nootropic gray zone areas . I once listened to a woman give the most riveting share about how she almost tried kombucha. I had to ask my sponsor later, 'What's kombucha?' She said, 'That's that stuff at the store. There's a little bit of alcohol in it.' I'm like, what is happening?"

(Just to show how varied mileage on this is, one recovery program advises that consuming kombucha "can be viewed as a relapse, while another refers to it as a "good alcohol alternative.")

As Hepola puts it, “AA has a parallel with the Bible in the sense that there is a book, it was written by a person. He's dead now. Everybody that was involved in the process of writing that book is dead now. They don't have any additional materials to add to that book. But that book doesn't include things like antidepressants, the legalization of marijuana, an understanding of mental health, certainly doesn't expand to nonalcoholic drinks. There’s no kombucha. And so what happens when you have a bunch of people that are going to interpret the words of a very wise book by a dead person is that some of them are going to have a generous interpretation, and then you're going to have people that have the strict fundamentalist interpretation.” 

I was reminded of this fundamentalism when actor and podcaster Dax Shephard announced the launch of a nonalcoholic beer brand this past spring , and an older sober friend was swift to express his disdain. “How is that not a slip?” my buddy had wondered. This is a man who won’t touch anything cooked in wine, who’s highly suspicious of pain relievers — and wouldn’t dream of using mouthwash. 

For years, I’ve accepted my friend’s decades-long version of sobriety as the closest thing to authentic as it comes, including that rigorous avoidance of not just alcohol but anything that conjures the feeling of alcohol. Naturally, when a few months ago I told him about Abe Zarate, a sommelier who goes by @sober_somm on  his TikTok , and whose wine tasting motto is “I just spit,” my friend was similarly skeptical. For him, even experiences that are alcohol adjacent feel like a slippery slope to cheating, a condition that reminds me of the Whole 30 maxim about avoiding “sex with your pants on.” He may be on to something. A 2023 feature in VeryWellMind warned that for some with alcohol use disorder, the smell of alcohol substitutes can trigger cravings that may lead to relapse. 

"Just like everything else in culture, people need to understand that sobriety is in a period of flux right now."

Or as Hepola said, “The old saying in AA is that if you keep going to the barber, you'll get a haircut.” But, she added, “That saying derives from a time when there really weren't that many options. When I was a year sober, I went to a bar, and asked for seltzer. The bartender was like, ‘What now?’ That's how far we've come. Because since then, there's been the La Croix revolution followed by the Waterloo revolution and the Rambler revolution. Then you've got non-alcoholic brews, and you've got  zero-proof cocktails . You've got every single liquor company looking at their bottom line and going in hardcore with nonalcoholic drinks.”

Hepola recalled hearing from some other people in sobriety that “We're not going to get mad about this, but we don't like it. We left that world, and I don't want to participate in it.” And, she said, “That is completely valid. I just refuse to believe it can't be a choice.”

Sobriety is a highly individual concept, one based in behaviors that may adapt and change, within a culture that also has adapted and changed exponentially in just the past few years. There’s no one set way to practice sobriety, and nobody can define anybody else’s version of it. What looks like a slip to one person may well be keeping another one sober, because drinking is never just about drinking. It's also about belonging.

“This is 21st century recovery," said Hepola, "and it needs to reckon with all the many variables. It’s almost 100 years since Bill Wilson fell off his barstool.”

Scanning documents into images can be time-consuming as it requires manual input. The OCR meaning is not limited to the convenience of being able to scan and search text. OCR software provides better access for users who are blind and visually impaired. The OCR recognition process accounts for language and structure and corrects words that it sees as being spelled incorrectly. Its spell-checking technology allows for the most accurate information to be conveyed to users. OCR contains a synthesizer within its system that will speak the recognized text. The content can be accessed by someone who is blind or visually impaired through scanned text using adaptive technology devices that will magnify the computer screen or provide the user with speech to listen to or Braille to read. Through the software, text from scanned documents can be read aloud according to each individual’s specifications.

A PDF OCR software or engine works through a set of steps.

1. Image analysis — A scanner reads a document and changes it into binary data. The OCR software will inspect the scanned file and classify light areas as the background and dark as the text.

2. Pre-analyzation — the OCR technology perfects the image through some different techniques:

  • Smoothing the edges of text images and taking away digital image spots.
  • Fixing any alignment issue that occurred during the scan by tilting the scanned document.
  • Recognizing script for multilingual OCR technology.
  • Tidying up lines and boxes in the image.

3. Recognizing text — the technology processes text by using feature extraction and pattern matching:

  • Feature extraction breaks down the linguistics into components such as closed loops, lines, line direction, and line intersections. From there, it uses these components to search for the best match or its closest one.
  • Pattern matching is when a character image, called a glyph, is isolated and compared to a similar glyph that is already stored. Pattern recognition can only operate when the glyph that is stored has a similar scale and font to the glyph that is added. This method works best with images that are scanned from documents that have been typed in a font that is already known.

4. Post processing — After the content is analyzed, the system changes the extracted text data to be a computerized file. Some free OCR PDF tools can make annotated files that have before and after versions of a scanned document. When OCR doesn’t recognize text , be sure to check that your scan is high quality, with plenty of light, and that the scan is not skewed.

This document-transforming technology was developed in 1974 by Ray Kurzweil, who started Kurzweil Computer Products, Inc. This new technology could recognize text that was printed in just about any font. Kurzweil determined that the best use for his technology would be a machine learning device for those who are blind. He made a reading machine that was able to read text out loud and translate text into a text-to-speech format. He sold his company to Xerox in 1980, as Xerox was interested in continuing to commercialize paper-to-computer text transformation.

This technology was not popularized until the early 1990s, when it was being used to digitize historical newspapers. OCR has seen several developments since then. Today, OCR has the capability to give users nearly perfect conversions. Document processing workflows can be automated through advanced methods of OCR. Before this software was available, documents had to be manually retyped — taking much more time, effort, and resources. With that, there was a higher chance of errors in the content. OCR has become widely accessible today and continues to increase efficiency for personal and professional purposes.

Today, data scientists will distinguish different types of OCR software depending on their application and use. Here are a few examples:

  • Simple optical character recognition software stores different text and font image patterns as templates. This software will use pattern dash-matching algorithms to find the differences between text images. It will analyze character by character in its internal database. Optical word recognition is when the system replicates the text word by word. It is not possible for every font and handwriting style to be captured as there are unlimited amounts of both, so this solution has its limits.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. The open pontoon stage was constructed in order to facilitate the bridal entrance on water, although there were concerns about safety as the last thing we wanted was probably a drowned bride before she could get on stage, picture that! I have to say on that day it wasn’t easy to get on the pontoon stage from the boat, in my long gown and high heels. Luckily my bridesmaids still noticed even though they stood the furthest from me on the stage, and helped me out without prior rehearsal. My girls could just tell whenever I needed a hand or maybe they were just so used to my clumsiness. Who knows 😂

From Lena Eliseeva Photo …  This cozy and warm summer wedding of gorgeous Natalia and Anton was in the middle of June. The young couple decided to organize their wedding themselves, and the day was very personal and touching. I am absolutely in love with rustic outdoor weddings, and this one is my favourite because of the free and easy atmosphere.

All the decor excluding the bride’s bouquet was made by a team of ten friends of the bride and groom. And it was charming – a light and beautiful arch, eco-style polygraphy and succulents, candy-bar with caramel apples and berries – sweet joys of summer.

At the end of ceremony the guests tossed up white handkerchiefs embroidered by Natalia’s own hands.

The most touching moment was the happy eyes of the groom’s grandmother, the most estimable person on the wedding. And the fireworks were a bright end to that beautiful day.

From Lena Kozhina … When we met with the couple for the first time, we immediately paid attention to Dima’s behavior towards Julia. There was a feeling of tenderness and awe, and we immediately wanted to recreate this atmosphere of love, care and warmth on their Big Day.

Later, when we had chosen a green meadow and an uncovered pavilion overlooking a lake as the project site, it only highlighted a light summer mood with colorful florals and a great number of natural woods. The name of the site is Fox Lodge and peach-orange color, as one of the Bride’s favorites, set the tone for the whole design – from the invitations, in which we used images of fox cubs to elements of serving guest tables and other decorative elements with the corresponding bright accents.

Mexico has a new president, Claudia Sheinbaum. What does it mean for the United States?

When Mexicans elected a new president, they also chose the next negotiator-in-chief who will make tough choices with the United States on issues from immigration and trade to fentanyl trafficking .

Mexicans voted overwhelmingly for Claudia Sheinbaum, giving her more than 58% of the vote and a substantial mandate to govern the second-largest economy in Latin America and the No. 1 trading partner for the United States.

When President Andrés Manuel López Obrador leaves his post and Sheinbaum takes office on Oct. 1, she'll inherit a country that is reeling from slow economic growth and violence linked to organized crime . She'll also face a fractured relationship with the United States. Despite deep cross-border economic ties, the U.S.-Mexico relationship has been tested by the countries' shared problems with global migration and drug trafficking .

"The two countries have been suffering from an incredible fumbling of the ball in dealing with each other," said Tony Payan, director of the Center for the U.S. and Mexico at Rice University's Baker Institute. "I think the two countries need to come back to the table."

Americans may love "taco Tuesday" and vacationing in Cancun, but the complexity of the U.S.-Mexico relationship is often lost amid marketing and political rhetoric. Mexico’s stamp on the U.S. is everywhere.

It’s in the Mexico-made car parts  that keep U.S. autoworkers employed in Detroit , in the windmill blades exported to  U.S. clean energy plants , in the  pacemakers saving the lives of American patients  with heart failure, and in the $15  avocado toast on restaurant menus  nationwide.

U.S. exports to Mexico include grains grown in the Midwest and natural gas pumped in Texas. Mexico sends fruits and vegetables north, keeping grocery costs lower amid volatile inflation in the U.S.

The country  became the United States’ largest trading partner  last year, pushing China to the No. 2 spot, and the two neighbors now do  nearly $800 billion in trade annually , according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

But it’s a fraught relationship. Mexico is also the transit country for hundreds of thousands of U.S.-bound migrants, provoking repeated humanitarian crises at the U.S. border. And it’s the source country for the fentanyl that kills tens of thousands of Americans each year.

The U.S.-Mexico-Canada foreign trade agreement, known as the USMCA – negotiated during the Trump administration – is up for renegotiation in 2026. U.S.-based business leaders are concerned that renegotiating the deal could create uncertainty and hurt both countries' economies.

"Mexico is now the U.S.’s main trading partner," said Jennifer Apperti, director of the Texas-Mexico Center at Southern Methodist University. "To again reopen the door to things that have just been negotiated would be, honestly, not the best use of time. And business time is of the essence."

Domingo Garcia, president of the U.S.-based League of United Latin American Citizens, said in a statement that he looked forward to "building bridges" with the Sheinbaum administration.

In past meetings, Garcia said he found Sheinbaum "open, engaging, and willing to listen and share her thoughts on moving forward. Mexicans are vital to the United States' economic future and our hemisphere's overall robust vibrancy.
