A tired looking Johnny Depp waved at a swarm of fans from his tour bus as he left a concert venue after a gig with Jeff Beck in Munich on Wednesday.

The actor, 59, sported a boho look in a khaki button-up worn over a faded blue shirt.

He donned a series of stacked bracelets and elastic bands along both hands, alongside a handful of chunky decorative rings.

One snap showed Johnny, post-performance, with what appeared to be a cigarette in his mouth as he said bye to fans from his bus.

The gig, as outlined on the website for the German Tollwood festival, said it 'will feature two stars from a class of their own'.

Last month, following his victory in his defamation trial against the his ex-wife Amber Heard, 36, Johnny confirmed he has teamed up with the legendary guitarist to record a 13-track collection.

The project, titled 18, includes two new Depp originals and an eclectic mix of cover songs ranging from such iconic artists as the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye and John Lennon to alternative rockers such as Killing Joke and The Velvet Underground.

'When Johnny and I started playing together, it really ignited our youthful spirit and creativity.

'We would joke about how we felt 18 again so that just became the album title too,' Beck, 77, said in a statement about the album, as reported by Billboard.

In keeping with their fond teenage memories that were sparked by the music, the two artists decided to use an illustration of themselves as 18-year-olds, drawn by Beck's wife Sandra, for the album cover.

For Depp, who grew up listening to Beck's music, the collaboration is something of a dream come true.

'It's an extraordinary honor to play and write music with Jeff, one of the true greats and someone I am now privileged enough to call my brother,' Depp added in their statement.

The duo first met in 2016, and quickly bonded over conversations about guitars and cars, all while trying to make each other laugh.

Over the years Beck began to appreciate Depp's songwriting abilities, which led to the former Yardbirds guitarist to play on a song, Welcome To Bushwacker, that appeared on the Hollywood Vampires' album Rise (2019).

Depp co-founded the supergroup in 2012 along with Alice Cooper and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry.

Seeing Depp's musical talent up-close and sensing their chemistry was undeniable, it was Beck who suggested they record songs that would eventually make up '18'.

While in the recording studio, Beck says they challenged each other, in part, by picking certain songs to cover for the album.

'I haven't had another creative partner like him for ages,' Beck confessed, adding, 'He was a major force on this record.

I just hope people will take him seriously as a musician because it's a hard thing for some people to accept that Johnny Depp can sing rock and roll.'

Beck also offered high praise for one of the Depp originals - This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr - that made the cut to be on the album.

'I was blown away by it,' the Jeff Beck Group star revealed. 'That song is one of the reasons I asked him to make an album with me.'

Depp's abilities as a musician can be heard on such covers as Caroline, No by the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye's Ooo Baby Baby, Venus In Furs from The Velvet Underground and Killing Joke's Death And Resurrection Show.

The Beck-Depp album '18' will be released digitally and on CD on July 15, and then be followed up by a vinyl edition on September 30.

I met Jeff Beck a few times. Each was a disconnect for me. Not in terms of our rapport, but simply because he wasn’t as his legend might suggest. I was ready for diffidence and distance. I got warmth and openness.

Let’s face it, Beck,  who died Tuesday at 78 , was an axeman for the ages, ostensibly nurtured on the same American roots music that fueled peers and rivals, notably fellow Yardbirder Jimmy Page. And yet he always seemed like a blues brother from another mother – she being, well, you name it, jazz, rockabilly, doo-wop, fusion. It was all fair game for this musical mix master.

Whether it was at the bar at Los Angeles’ Sunset Marquis hotel or in his tour bus in a Santa Rosa, California, parking lot, I was expecting the very monster that a monstrous talent might naturally create. What I got was a kind, soft-spoken, impish and exceedingly polite man, the kind of the polite the British famously muster.

Beck, or Jeff as he insisted I call him, certainly appreciated that I was familiar with his oeuvre. From that seminal 1968 Jeff Beck Group album “Truth” (featuring future antagonist Rod Stewart and future Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood) that is echoed to curious perfection in the first Led Zeppelin release, to his more adventurous and recent work with young bass phenom Tal Wilkenfeld. But what really connected us was cars.

Jeff was a fanatic. A specific kind of fanatic. While his fellow rock icons such as Eric Clapton and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason went in for flashy Ferraris, Jeff was a dedicated ’50s American iron man through and through. He would have fit right into the scene in George Lucas’ girls-and-hot rods epic “American Graffiti.” The jet black hair, tight white T-shirt, black leather pants, his regular wear, were all perfect for drag racing on a steamy summer Saturday night.

Hot rods were his thing , in particular the hot rod Holy Grail, 1932 Ford Deuce Coupes in various configurations. To get them built, he often employed the talents of a San Francisco restoration ace named Roy Brizio. That I knew Brizio seemed to grease the skids for our talks, which inevitably veered from guitars to cars.

We’d be talking about his tour with Brian Wilson, and before you knew it he’d be diving into the details of that “409” engine in the Beach Boys song of the same name. Or if I asked about the influence of Detroit on American rock ’n’ roll, he soon would detour into details of his collection of modern-era Chevy Corvettes.

Once, I asked if he’d ever tried to convince his famous pals to get into the hot rod game, and he said he’d tried, notably with Clapton, advising him “to ditch that Italian stuff and get a hot rod.” Jeff could be convincing in his gentility.

What TV didn't show at the Golden Globes: Austin Butler can't quit his Elvis voice

On the occasion, I went to see him play at a small performing arts center in Santa Rosa, I brought my son, who was about 14 at the time. Jeff was eager to chat cars and music, in that order. He invited my son into that modest tour bus for a solid handshake and a kind look in the eye.

Later, we both stood rapt as Jeff took the stage from the other giant on the bill, Beck idol Buddy Guy, and just shredded the place. Not so much with his power or volume, but with that almost magical finger-picking style that seemed both effortless and as intricate as a spider weaving a web.

Jeff will be missed by millions of music fans, of which my son and I are but two. But I’ll forever be grateful to have spent time in the company of this modest yet magnificent man, whose very demeanor was so humble in the face of his contributions and influence.

Never meet your heroes, the saying goes. When it comes to Jeff Beck, that saying has no truth.

Excited fans swarmed Johnny Depp ’s tour bus and brought traffic to a halt after a concert, with one onlooker comparing the scenes to Beatlemania.

The actor was leaving Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on Monday after playing alongside rocker Jeff Beck when he was mobbed.

Footage shows fans packing around the blacked-out coach, with one sat on the shoulders of another and holding up a sign to the windows of the vehicle.

Other supporters can be heard chanting Depp’s name and holding their phones in the air to try and catch a glimpse through the tinted windows.

The video also shows a bus on the opposite side of the road finding its route completely blocked – with the crowd seemingly refusing to budge.

Johnny Depp verdict - latest: Actor shares video message with fans as Amber Heard appeal deadline looms

Andy Jones, 32, who captured the footage said: “The [tour] bus pulled out the back with a really big crowd of people.

“The crowd was so big that he wouldn’t have been able to stop and do anything as people were all excited and hovering around the gate.

“The fans ran around the side of the bus and were blocking the other lane – two buses were trying to get past and I don’t think the other bus driver had any idea what was going on.

“They were banging on the windows and trying to show him pictures and send him birthday wishes – it was like The Beatles were there.

“Opposite the gates to the Symphony Hall, you’ve got bars and restaurants and when people realised it was Johnny Depp the crowd just kept growing and growing.

“He’s not on posters or anything and people were very shocked he was there.”

He is joining English musician Beck, 77, during the last few legs of his tour, with plans to release an album together also in motion . According to reports in Swedish media, the pair are scheduled to play in Stockholm’s Annex venue later in June.

Earlier this week, it was revealed he and Beck had managed to rack up a £50,000 bill at an Indian restaurant in Birmingham. The Independent later exclusively reported on just how the pair managed to compile the massive tab .

Jeff Beck Announces Fall 2022 US Tour

Jeff Beck has announced a fall U.S. tour in support of 18 , his new collaborative album with Johnny Depp . The trek begins on Sept. 23 in Del Valle, Texas, and runs through Nov. 12 in Reno, Nev., with more shows to be announced later.

Beck will be joined by Ann Wilson on the first three dates and ZZ Top on the first six dates.

Tickets go on sale to the public on Friday. You can see the full list of tour dates below.

Beck and Depp were recently accused of stealing the lyrics to their new song "Sad Motherfuckin' Parade" from "Hobo Ben," an old toast — or form of Black folk poetry — delivered by the late Slim Wilson and preserved in Bruce Jackson's 1974 book  Get Your Ass in the Water and Swim Like Me and a 1976 album of the same name.

A spokesperson for the 18  album team told UCR, "We are reviewing the inquiry relating to the song 'Sad Motherfuckin' Parade' on the 18 album by Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp. If appropriate, additional copyright credits will be added to all forms of the album."

Beck also recently contributed a solo to Ozzy Osbourne's " Patient Number 9 ," the title track and lead single off the Prince of Darkness'  new album , which comes out on Sept. 9.

The tour will focus on the new album as well as explore Beck’s legendary career through instrumentals like “You Know You Know,” “A Day in the Life” and “Brush with the Blues.” The tour will include BECK’s current band: bassist Rhonda Smith , drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson.

BECK and DEPP’s 13-track album, 18, debuted at #10 on both the Billboard Top Albums and Top Current Albums charts marking the first top 10 for both Beck and Depp on the 31-year-old Top Album Sales chart. The set is available on CD and digitally, with a 180-gram black vinyl version coming on September 30. The duo recently wrapped a successful European tour together on July 25 in Paris, France to much fan and critical acclaim with sold-out dates throughout northern Europe, Italy and France – including a stop at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival.

Jeff Beck found a kindred spirit in Johnny Depp when the two met in 2016. They bonded quickly over cars and guitars and spent most of their time together trying to make each other laugh. At the same time, Beck’s appreciation grew for Depp’s serious songwriting skills and his ear for music. That talent and their chemistry convinced Beck they should make an album together.

Depp agreed and they started in 2019. Over the next three years, they recorded a mix of Depp originals along with a wide range of covers that touches on everything from Celtic and Motown, to the Beach Boys and Killing Joke. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says with a laugh. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”

Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards, been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl with special guests including Buddy Guy, Steven Tyler, Beth Hart, Billy F. Gibbons and Jan Hammer.

When Jeff Beck Opened His Final Tour, With Johnny Depp

Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp opened their collaborative tour with a show at The Anthem in Washington, DC on Oct. 4, 2022. The evening began with a solo set from Beck and his backing band (bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson). Opening with “Freeway Jam” he continued with his signature versions of “You Know You Know,” “Big Block,” and “Brush with the Blues” and from his new album with Depp, 18 , “Caroline No”. At the midway point of the set, Depp stepped out from the wings to join Beck on songs from the new album including “This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr” and “Isolation” before ending the night with their take on the Killing Joke song, “The Death and Resurrection Show.”

The tour, originally announced on Aug. 15, began on Sept. 23 in Texas where Beck (alone) shared the bill for the first six shows with longtime musical friends, ZZ Top. Beck joined ZZ Top on stage each night for their encores. Here they are performing “La Grange” on Sept. 25.

Beck and Depp headed up the east coast before continuing with several mid-west stops (including one date in Canada) before heading to the west coast.

From the original Aug. 15 tour announcement: Beck found a kindred spirit in Depp when the two met in 2016.

“We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said at the time. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.” The pair had previously wrapped a European tour.

One of the Oct. 4 opening night encores was a cover of “Little Wing”

The tour spanned 21 dates, ending on Nov. 12. Beck, born on June 24, 1944, was universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ year career, he earned eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with a concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl with special guests including Buddy Guy, Steven Tyler, Beth Hart, Billy F. “My Suhr looks like it was dragged behind a school bus on lava rock, and that’s just fine by me”: Jennifer Batten shares her gear epiphanies – and how she felt letting go of the Washburn she used with Jeff Beck and Michael Jackson

Batten explains why Suhr changed everything, the midi system that was a letdown – and the gear advice she’s learned the hard way

Jennifer Batten

This month on Bought & Sold , Guitarist welcomes a true legend to share her story in gear, as Jennifer Batten discusses the most important electric guitars in her life, the ones that got away, and what we should all be looking for when auditioning a new piece of gear.

What was the first serious guitar you bought with your own money?

“That was a Sunburst Les Paul . I got a loan from my dad and paid it back for many years. I believe the inspiration was photos of Duane Allman.”

What was the last guitar you bought and why?

“The last guitar I bought was a Suhr Modern Antique. I need a great bridge/middle combo for a lot of the shows I’m playing now, but I was always compromising with my Washburn Parallaxe 24-fret. I thought I couldn’t get the sound I wanted because it was a 24-fret neck, and you couldn’t get proper Strat spacing.

“Then I was sharing the stage with the phenomenal Brazilian guitarist Leandre Gomes; he had me play his Suhr Modern Antique 24-fret guitar into my system, and the clouds parted. I soon bought my own and have never played a more comfortable neck.”

“I was timid for quite a while because I’d played with a Floyd [Rose] since the 80s, but I now find I can do some pretty extreme vibrato with the bar using the Wilkinson locking bridge WVS130. But there is no locking nut; it just stays in tune. I also use Big Bends Nut Sauce on the bridge and nut.”

All the latest guitar news, interviews, lessons, reviews, deals and more, direct to your inbox!

What is the most incredible find or bargain you’ve had when buying gear?

“Suhrs are hella expensive, often running $3,500 to $5,000 – but I found mine on Reverb from Japan for just $2,600!”

What’s the strongest case of buyer’s remorse you’ve ever experienced?

“I’ve been using the Midi Commander [footswitch] for years to change presets. [I then decided to try the] Midi Captain, which looked very promising since I now need to change snapshots versus presets. I bought one and it toasted while updating. I returned it to Amazon and got another.

“Same thing. No response from the company for help. I gave up on them and missed my return window and am now very happy with Morningstar MC8. Their support team is great, and the programming interface is really good.”

I’m only semi-sad that I sold the Washburn I used on the HIStory Tour and Jeff Beck tours – just because of the years of mojo and the historical angle. My new Suhr kicks its ass

Have you ever sold a guitar that you now intensely regret letting go of?

“I’m only semi-sad that I sold the Washburn I used on the [Michael Jackson] HIStory Tour and Jeff Beck tours – just because of the years of mojo and the historical angle. My new Suhr kicks its ass, but it had a lot going for it, including comfort and weight. It’s now in a museum in China.

“I’m also semi-sad that I sold my King Tut Ibanez, painted by Pamelina Hovnatanian. She did an incredible job using gold leaf in Tut’s portrait across the whole body. But the guitar just sounded harsh, so it now resides in the Hard Rock [Cafe] in Myrtle Beach [South Carolina], which is a pyramid-shaped building. It’s a beautiful display in a glass case and a very appropriate home.”

“Given the amount of effort that went into the artwork, I kind of gave up on such customisations because you don’t really know a guitar until you’ve spent many hours with it. The art typically comes well before you’ve had that chance to even know if you like it or not, so it’s wasteful if it doesn’t work out.

I sold one of the small Ibanez George Benson guitars years ago, and kind of wish I still had that. I don’t even know if you can get them any more

“My current main Suhr is a relic and looks like it was dragged behind a school bus on lava rock, and that’s just fine by me. I sold one of the small Ibanez George Benson guitars years ago, and kind of wish I still had that. I don’t even know if you can get them any more. It would be a nice couch guitar because it’s a hollow body and much smaller than the average archtop.”

What’s your best guitar-buying tip?

“If you can spend some time with a guitar, it’s the best option. But with the Suhr, I went on having played someone else’s [first]. I don’t see them in local shops. The company’s reputation is well warranted, and they have a great support team. You can go on their site and detail every aspect of a custom guitar if you’re so inclined.”

When was the last time you stopped and looked in a guitar shop or browsed online, and what were you looking at?

“I find myself in guitar shops frequently on my travels and, of course, for guitar clinics, but I rarely play anything on the wall. I admire the finishes while they’re hanging up, but, honestly, I prefer secondhand instruments that have already had the break-in period and the necks are stable. My comfort zone is plugging into my own system and being alone.”

I would rather have a good guitar and a cheap amp. I see it as your hands are number one, the instrument is number two, and what you play through is number three

If forced to make a choice, would you rather have a really good guitar and cheap amp or a  cheap electric guitar and a top-notch guitar amp ?

“Personally, I would rather have a good guitar and a cheap amp. I see it as your hands are number one, the instrument is number two, and what you play through is number three.”

If you could only use humbuckers or single coils for the rest of your career, which would you choose?

“With humbuckers or single coils , I now can definitely say I’d go with single coils. Simply because of the Fishman Fluence line making them low noise.”

Jennifer’s Go-To Rig

“My rig these days consists of a BluGuitar Amp1 and BluGuitar FatCab, a Line 6 HX Stomp XL, and a Morningstar MC8 Midi Controller. I also use a Suhr Modern Antique guitar with an added Wilkinson locking bridge [WVS130] and Lock-It Straps . I also have a D’Addario XPND pedalboard and case, ASI Audio 3D Ambient in-ear monitors and RockBoard cables. As for pedals, I use a Boss FV-50L  Volume Pedal and Line 6 EX-1 Expression Pedals – one for wah whammy and other specialty and the other for delay mix.

“I’ve just added (for the HX Stomp and MC8) the Mission Engineering 529M Ultra-compact, High-Efficiency USB C-PD Converter for Effects Pedals, and Specialized cables 2.1mm to 2.5mm DC Cable for Line 6 HX (and other pedals) by SweetFoot pedals, which are impossible to find anywhere else. Most just have adaptors.”

Johnny Depp Honors Late Jeff Beck with London Performance on What Would Have Been Musician's 80th Birthday

J ohnny Depp and Jeff Beck collaborated on the 2022 studio album '18' and toured together in the months before Beck died at 78 in January 2023

Johnny Depp is paying tribute to his friend, the late Jeff Beck .

On Monday, June 24, Depp, 61, united with musicians Jimmy Page , Chris Robinson , Billy Gibbons, Graham Cox and Sandra Beck — the late Beck's wife — at the Gibson Garage in London for a special night of performances to honor Beck on what would have been his 80th birthday.

Depp, an accomplished guitarist and vocalist on top of his decades-long acting career, could be seen performing a song with Sandra during the Monday night event honoring the late Yardbirds guitarist, who died of bacterial meningitis in January 2023. Musicians Toby Lee and Anika Nilles, the latter of whom formerly played drums for Beck's live band, also joined Depp and other musicians for a night of performances, hosted by singer and songwriter Imelda May.

Beck and Depp first met in 2016 and quickly struck a friendship. They released a studio album together , titled 18 , in July 2022, several months before Beck's death. The pair set out on a tour to promote the album as well, with Beck stating in a release at the time of the album's announcement that he had not "had another creative partner like [Depp] for ages."

Depp also performed at another Beck tribute concert in May 2023 at London’s Royal Albert Hall alongside Rod Stewart ,  Eric Clapton  and  Ronnie Wood , among others. In June 2023, Depp shared a photo of himself and Beck working on a car's engine together to commemorate what would have been the rock music legend's 79th birthday.

"Happy birthday my dearest brother Jeff. You are with me, always ," Depp wrote in a caption to the post at the time. "You are everything!!! Your fellow giant toddler… eternal love and worship."

The Biggest Milestones In Jeff Beck's Illustrious Career

Jeff Beck staring ahead

The sudden and unexpected death of guitarist Jeff Beck in January 2023 (per The Guardian ) came just as his career was entering a new phase. Just months before, he had released a new album, "18," in partnership with Johnny Depp after several years of collaboration (per Billboard ). If that particular endeavor was somewhat tarnished by the controversies surrounding Depp's personal life, it didn't alter the overall popular perception of Beck, whom The Telegraph once referred to as the guitarist's guitarist.

The esteem with which Beck's peers held his work as a musician did not translate into a comparable measure of fame with the general public. While the names of other guitarists who first came on the scene in 1960 reached everyone's lips, Beck's was often well out of the limelight. But that was as much by his own choice as it was the whims of fate — he rejected offers that might have brought him more fame and fortune and focused instead on experimentation and variety with his playing. His range and talent made him an influential force behind many trends in rock, pop, and jazz throughout his career, despite his relatively low profile.

He hopped around bands early in his career

Jeff Beck, real name Gregory Arnold Beck, was born in Surrey on June 24, 1944, and took to the guitar young. According to Loudwire , he was so enthusiastic about the instrument in his youth that he tried to build his own more than once before finally getting a loaner. He took his passion with him to the Wimbledon College of Art, where he played with numerous bands in short stints that would typify his later journeyman behavior as a professional musician. According to Peter Buckley's "The Rough Guide to Rock,"  Beck bounced around four different groups while at Wimbledon. Among them was Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages, and Beck's work for them can be heard in their single "Dracula's Daughter." But his tenure with them was short, as it was with the Rumbles, the Crescents, and the Bandits.

Beck demonstrated his changeability during this time as well. Per Annette Carson's "Jeff Beck: Crazy Fingers,"  he was first exposed to R&B during this period and went all in on it. He was so swept up by the new sound that he formed his own R&B group, the Nightshift. The band gained a measure of fame and collaborated with a young Tim Rice on the single "That's My Story," but Beck continued to play with other bands, and the Nightshift eventually fizzled out. R&B remained an attraction, compelling Beck to join the Tridents, but he wasn't long with them either.

He came to fame through the Yardbirds

Jeff Beck's early musical wandering while at college built up his reputation among rock 'n' rollers in the early 1960s, per Annette Carson's "Jeff Beck: Crazy Fingers."  It also put him on a career trajectory with uncanny similarities to another skilled and versatile guitarist: Eric Clapton. The parallels only deepened when Beck was chosen to replace Clapton as guitarist for the rock band the Yardbirds.

Beck's presence radically altered the Yardsticks' reputation. Per The Guardian , they went from a bluesy group to the cutting edge of rock and pop. He experimented frequently, generating new sounds that often anticipated their more widespread and popular use by later groups. Among his innovations was making use of feedback, a technique he stumbled upon by accident. "We played larger venues," he told the BBC , "and the PA was inadequate. So we cranked up the level and found out that feedback would happen. I started using it because it was controllable – you could play tunes with it."

For all his influence through and over the group, Beck's membership of the Yardsticks was tenuous and often unhappy. By his own admission (per "Crazy Fingers" ), his temper could be ferocious, brought out by faulty equipment, unenthusiastic audiences, and the rigors of touring. After a particularly intense spat that resulted in a smashed guitar, the other members of the Yardsticks had enough and arranged to part company with their guitarist. Beck's stint with them came to about two years.

His hit solo single was a mixed blessing for him

After leaving the Yardsticks, Jeff Beck toyed with the idea of leaving music altogether. According to the BBC , he said as much at the time. His seriousness in declaring such was undermined by how quickly he found new work. Beck fell in with music producer Mickie Most, who encouraged the guitarist to produce something popular. While Beck felt that Most showed very little interest in the type of recording he wanted to do, the producer's success and influence convinced him to put out a solo single.

"Hi Ho Silver Lining" was first released in 1967 (per Rolling Stone ) and was a big hit. It placed on the charts again in 1972. But the pop tune's content and popularity did not sit easily with Beck. He didn't enjoy providing vocals for the song and told Making Music magazine (via Martin Power's "Hot Wired Guitar: The Life of Jeff Beck" ) that singing was embarrassing for him. Divorced as it was from his preferred musical explorations, he continued to have mixed feelings for "Silver Lining." At times, he said it wasn't such a bad tune to be associated with; at others, he referred to the song as "a pink toilet sink hanging around my neck for the rest of my f****** life."

The (first) Jeff Beck Group helped pave the way for heavy metal

For all his renown within guitar and rock circles, Jeff Beck's efforts to have a stable group of his own were not successful. In 1967, less than a year after his departure from the Yardbirds, he formed the Jeff Beck Group (per The Guardian ). After a few bumps in the road, the band's lineup was made up of Beck on guitar, singer Rod Stewart, bassist Ronnie Wood, and drummer Micky Waller (per Classic Rock ). And after a few initial tours, they put out their first album, "Truth."

Classic Rock called "Truth" the holy grail for rock band debut albums, though Beck saw it as no more or less than another record release. Largely made up of covers the group had honed in live shows, it was an eclectic mix of musical styles and a herald for the emerging heavy metal sound. Among those influenced was Led Zeppelin, who shared a manager with the Jeff Beck Group. Indeed, when Led Zeppelin released their first album a few months after "Truth," the two had a song in common: Willie Dixon's "You Shook Me."

Among Beck's initial obstacles in forming the band were his personality clashes with potential members. The Jeff Beck Group were often at loggerheads, and tensions rose during a U.S. tour according to the BBC . The band fractured in 1970 after releasing just one more album. A second Jeff Beck group was similarly short-lived.

His switch to instrumental music was a game changer

When the first Jeff Beck Group split up, Jeff Beck himself didn't have long to consider its impact on his career (per Britannica ). More pressing was his recovery from a serious car crash in 1969 (via The Hollywood Reporter ). After recovering, Beck tried to reform the Jeff Beck Group with a new line-up but enjoyed little success with it. According to Ultimate Classic Rock , he could have become part of the Rolling Stones — he auditioned for the legendary band. But besides considering himself a poor fit, Beck's musical interests were shifting.

His follow-up to his two short-lived Jeff Beck Groups would be "Blow by Blow," an all-instrumental solo album. It wasn't done entirely on Beck's own, and among his collaborators was producer and arranger George Martin of the Beatles . With a small group of musicians and Martin's arrangements, Beck's guitar essentially replaced the part kept for a lead vocalist throughout "Blow by Blow," and Beck would largely follow that template for the rest of his career.

"Blow by Blow" was not only a hit record in 1975 — it was celebrated for being a successful fusion of rock with jazz. But the very thing that won it praise was something Beck expressed regret for years later. Speaking to Guitar Player in 1989, he said that he wished he had never done the album, considering the impulse behind fusion akin to mixing badly-matched flavors. "I wish I had stayed with earthy rock 'n' roll," he added.

He and Clapton came together for The Secret Policeman's Other Ball

Coincidental parallels kept Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton connected. Both came up in the same musical environment, and both served as guitarists for the Yardbirds. The connections, however, didn't make for a lasting friendship. Beck, per Classic Rock , was sure that Clapton resented him for assuming his role with the band and being a part of their growing success. The Yardbirds' tour of the United States with Beck, he suspected, was a particularly raw nerve for his predecessor.

Despite this assumption of rivalry, Beck and Clapton would go on to collaborate for an Amnesty International benefit concert. The Secret Policeman's Other Ball, held in 1981, was a development on earlier comedy benefits in Britain (via Annette Carson's  "Jeff Beck: Crazy Fingers" ). Funnymen were still on hand, but the program was expanded to include pop and rock acts. Among them was a jam session by Beck and Clapton, both of them shredding through multiple covers.

The rivalry softened over the years. Carson described them as friends in her book, and Beck conceded to Classic Rock that Clapton's perceived jealousy subsided with time. When a documentary was produced on Beck, he told Rolling Stone that the one part that brought him to tears was Clapton's praise.

He contributed to film scores and soundtracks

Jeff Beck wasn't afraid to retreat from the spotlight. After achieving massive success with albums and tours throughout the 1970s, he disappeared for the better part of three years. "The pitch I play at is so intense that I just can't do it every night," the BBC quoted him as saying. When he came back on the music scene, it was often in partnership with other artists.

Some of those partnerships were done on behalf of motion pictures. One of his more prominent film jobs came in 1988 when, according to  "Jeff Beck: Crazy Fingers,"  he lent his guitar and face to the Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle "Twins." Beck played a bandleader strumming country tunes and recorded a cover of "The Train Kept A-Rollin'." Beck's recording of "House of the Blue Danube," done with impresario Malcolm McLaren, was used in the trailers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" two years later.

In 1990, Beck was asked by composer Hans Zimmer to contribute to the score of "Days of Thunder" (per "Crazy Fingers" ). Beck claimed not to have enjoyed the assignment, recorded in four days, and none of his playing was on the soundtrack album. But it did make it into the film itself.

Jeff Beck reunited with an old bandmate for a hit single

By his own admission, Jeff Beck could sometimes have hostile relations with bandmates. Rod Stewart, the lead vocalist of the first Jeff Beck Group, put some of that down to Beck's inadequate efforts as a leader. "It was all about the music, as far as [Beck] was concerned," Stewart wrote in "Rod: The Autobiography."  "He appeared unconcerned about how the band's financial affairs were being run and about staying on top of things on behalf of his musicians." The mismanagement of money sometimes left Stewart with no cash on hand for food, and Beck was stingy with affection for his bandmates.

For his part, Beck told Guitar World that there were jealousy issues on Stewart's part. But Beck could be glib about the relationship. When the latter was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, Beck was asked to say a few words. According to "Rod Stewart: The New Biography"  by Tim Ewbank and Stafford Hildred, Beck told the crowd that he and Stewart "have a love-hate relationship. He loves me and I hate him."

Despite such comments, the two remained on fairly good terms, and in 1983, they reunited for a cover of "People Get Ready." The song, first performed in 1965 by the Impressions (per Ultimate Classic Rock ), was a minor hit, led to additional recordings between Beck and Stewart, and featured on a Grammy-winning album.

He recorded with famous names as a journeyman guitarist

Jeff Beck kept busy throughout the 1980s and 1990s, but he couldn't be said to have a stable professional home. He was something of a journeyman, playing guitar with and for various artists and groups while taking periodic and lengthy absences from the scene. AllMusic names some of these collaborations: A 1980 recording with Jan Hammer, an album produced with Nile Rodgers and featuring Rod Stewart's vocals in 1985, the lead guitar part for Mick Jagger's "Primitive Cool" in 1987, and the same role for Roger Waters' "Amused to Death" in 1992. Beck's own output included "Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop" at the end of the decade, and he recruited Stevie Ray Vaughan for the accompanying tour.

Many of these artists would be quick to pay tribute to Beck after his death in January 2023. "[Beck] was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me and respond," Stewart wrote on Twitter . "Jeff, you were the greatest, my man." On the same platform , Jagger called Beck "one of the greatest guitar players in the world."

He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice

Twice in his career, Jeff Beck was honored by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, albeit for different achievements. The first time came in 1993 when the Yardbirds were inducted. Per the Hall of Fame's website , members from throughout the band's short but impactful time were brought in for the ceremony; besides Beck, guitarists Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page were in attendance. The happy occasion didn't pass without Beck offering a facetious comment on the band's past tensions. In an acceptance speech (via YouTube ), Beck noted he had done other work and added, "Somebody told me I should be proud tonight. But I'm not, because they kicked me out. They did. F*** them."

Beck's former bandmates seemed to take his flippancy in good humor, and in 2009, it would be one of them, Page, who introduced Beck as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his individual work (via the Hall of Fame's website ). Page offered effusive praise for Beck's work in innovating on the possibilities of the electric guitar, and Beck seemed in a more sentimental mood as he accepted the honor. "I've been very naughty all my life, and I don't deserve this," he said before going on to thank friends and colleagues. Not that sincerity stopped him from offering a middle finger to those who hadn't supported him.

He dabbled with electronica when he returned to albums

The 1990s saw Jeff Beck make another turn into a new musical genre. After experimenting with rock, jazz, R&B, fusion, and pop, he decided to dive into electronica. In 1999, he released the album "Who Else!", his first collection of original material in years. It wasn't all Beck's work; according to Ultimate Classic Rock , he was only credited on three of the songs. Most of it was written by Tony Hymas, Beck's keyboard player for many years, and Beck was happy to acknowledge the contribution.

"If this album does anything, I shall be so pleased I stuck with loyalty to [Hymas's] writing," Beck told Fuzz magazine in Sweden (via Guy Guitars ), adding that keyboardists were the people to turn to for fresh content. The collaboration and the resulting sounds were apparently enough to satisfy Beck, as he continued to pursue electronic music in his records until 2003.

Public perception was another matter —  Rolling Stone gave "Who Else!" a largely glowing review, while critic Robert Christgau declared it a bomb with a simple icon (via Christgau's personal website ). But the album did fairly good business; one assumes, then, that Beck was pleased to follow Hymas' lead after all.

From Brian Wilson to Johnny Depp

The last stage of Jeff Beck's career began with a fresh collaboration. He teamed with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys in the 2010s for a series of live shows (per the BBC ). The tours were meant to promote an album the two had performed on, but the record wasn't finished when the tour began, and the chemistry between Beck and Wilson didn't come to much. In interviews with Mojo and Classic Rock (via Louder ), Beck complained of being pressured into promotional efforts, being denied time off even for medical procedures, and of a lack of communication and support from Wilson.

But as that partnership deteriorated, Beck found another: Johnny Depp. He and the actor-guitarist struck up a friendship following the tours with Wilson, and from there, they moved into musical collaboration. Beck and Depp's proved a happier relationship, and after playing together at the tail end of the 2010s, they recorded and released an album, "18," in 2022. Their time together coincided with Depp's highly publicized conflict with ex-wife Amber Heard, a fact that sometimes colored perceptions of their album. The Guardian's review of "18" dismissed it as an exercise in self-pity on Depp's part. But Beck and Depp remained on good terms until the former's death in 2023, and Depp was allegedly among the last visitors Beck received (per People ).

National news | jeff beck, guitarist who influenced generations, dies at 78.

Guitarist Jeff Beck performs at the Louisiana Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans on April 29, 2011.

Beck died Tuesday after “suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis,” his representatives said in a statement released Wednesday. The location was not immediately known.

“Jeff was such a nice person and an outstanding iconic, genius guitar player — there will never be another Jeff Beck,” Tony Iommi, guitarist for Black Sabbath wrote on Twitter.

Kiss’ Paul Stanley called Beck one of the all-time guitar masters: “Play on now and forever,” he tweeted, while Stanley’s bandmate Gene Simmons added: “No one played guitar like Jeff Beck.”

Beck first came to prominence as a member of the Yardbirds and then went out on his own in a solo career that incorporated hard rock, jazz, funky blues and even opera. He was known for his improvising, love of harmonics and the whammy bar on his preferred guitar, the Fender Stratocaster.

“Jeff Beck is the best guitar player on the planet,” Joe Perry, the lead guitarist of Aerosmith, told The New York Times in 2010. “He is head, hands and feet above all the rest of us, with the kind of talent that appears only once every generation or two.”

Beck was among the rock-guitarist pantheon from the late ’60s that included Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. Beck won eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice — once with the Yardbirds in 1992 and again as a solo artist in 2009. He was ranked fifth in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.”

“Jeff could channel music from the ethereal,” Page tweeted Wednesday.

Beck played guitar with vocalists as varied as Luciano Pavarotti, Macy Gray, Chrissie Hynde, Joss Stone, Imelda May, Cyndi Lauper, Wynonna Judd, Buddy Guy and Johnny Depp. He made two records with Rod Stewart — 1968’s “Truth” and 1969’s “Beck-Ola” — and one with a 64-piece orchestra, “Emotion & Commotion.”

“I like an element of chaos in music. That feeling is the best thing ever, as long as you don’t have too much of it. It’s got to be in balance. I just saw Cirque du Soleil, and it struck me as complete organized chaos,” he told Guitar World in 2014. “If I could turn that into music, it’s not far away from what my ultimate goal would be, which is to delight people with chaos and beauty at the same time.”

Beck career highlights include joining with bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice to create the power trio that released “Beck, Bogert and Appice” in 1973, tours with Brian Wilson and Buddy Guy and a tribute album to the late guitarist Les Paul, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Party (Honoring Les Paul).”

Geoffrey Arnold Beck was born in Surrey, England, and attended Wimbledon Art College. His father was an accountant, and his mother worked in a chocolate factory. As a boy, he built his first instrument, using a cigar box, a picture frame for the neck and string from a radio-controlled toy airplane.

He was in a few bands — including Nightshift and The Tridents — before joining the Yardbirds in 1965, replacing Clapton but only a year later giving way to Page. During his tenure, the band created the memorable singles “Heart Full of Soul,” “I’m a Man” and “Shapes of Things.”

Beck’s first hit single was 1967’s instrumental “Beck’s Bolero,” which featured future Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, and future Who drummer Keith Moon. The Jeff Beck Group — with Stewart singing — was later booked to play the 1969 Woodstock music festival but their appearance was canceled. Beck later said there was unrest in the band.

“I could see the end of the tunnel,” he told Rolling Stone in 2010.

Beck was friends with Hendrix and they performed together. Before Hendrix, most rock guitar players concentrated on a similar style and technical vocabulary. Hendrix blew that apart.

“He came along and reset all of the rules in one evening,” Beck told Guitar World.

Beck teamed up with legendary producer George Martin — a.k.a. “the fifth Beatle” — to help him fashion the genre-melding, jazz-fusion classic “Blow by Blow” (1975) and “Wired” (1976). He teamed up with Seal on the Hendrix tribute “Stone Free,” created a jazz-fusion group led by synthesizer player Jan Hammer and honored rockabilly guitarist Cliff Gallup with the album “Crazy Legs.” He put out “Loud Hailer” in 2016.

Beck’s guitar work can be heard on the soundtracks of such films as “Stomp the Yard,” “Shallow Hal,” “Casino,” “Honeymoon in Vegas,” “Twins,” “Observe and Report” and “Little Big League.” Beck recently completed a tour supporting his album with Depp, “18.”

Beck’s career never hit the commercial highs of Clapton. A perfectionist, he preferred to make critically well-received instrumental records and left the limelight for long stretches, enjoying his time restoring vintage automobiles. He and Clapton had a tense relationship early on but became friends in later life and toured together.

Why did the two wait some four decades to tour together?

“Because we were all trying to be big bananas,” Beck told Rolling Stone in 2010. “Except I didn’t have the luxury of the hit songs Eric’s got.”

Beck is survived by his wife, Sandra.

4 Great Jeff Beck Collaborations in Honor of the Late Guitar Great’s 80th Birthday

by Matt Friedlander June 24, 2024, 2:02 pm

The late Jeff Beck , the hugely influential and innovative U.K. rock guitarist who emerged on the music scene as a member of The Yardbirds in the mid-1960s, was born 80 years ago today (June 24, 1944). Following his 1965-1966 stint in the British Invasion band, Beck launched his own band, the Jeff Beck Group, and also collaborated with a variety of other respected artists.

Beck combined technical ability, speed, and a knack for creating a unique sonic palette while exploring a variety of genres. Many of his musical contemporaries and respected younger musicians consider Jeff the greatest rock guitarist of all time.

Beck was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, as a member of The Yardbirds and as a solo artist, in 1992 and 2009, respectively. He also won eight Grammy Awards, six alone in the Best Rock Instrumental Performance category.

Sadly, Beck passed away on January 10, 2023 , from a bacterial meningitis infection at the age of 78. He had recently finished a tour with actor/musician Johnny Depp in support of their 2021 collaborative album, 18.

Beck’s impressive list of collaborators also includes many fellow Rock Hall inductees. To mark what would’ve been Beck’s 80th birthday, here are four standout collaborations he did with various well-known music stars:

“Lookin’ for Another Pure Love” – Stevie Wonder (1972)

Beck played a fluid guitar solo on “Lookin’ for Another Pure Love,” a melodic R&B tune featured on Stevie Wonder ’s hit 1972 album Talking Book . Right before Beck’s solo begins, Stevie is heard saying on the track, “Do it, Jeff.”

Earlier that same year, the Jeff Beck Group had released a cover of the 1970 Wonder tune “I Got to Have a Song” on its self-titled fourth studio album.

“Infatuation” – Rod Stewart (1984)

Rod Stewart had been the original lead singer of the Jeff Beck Group. He was featured on the band’s first two studio albums, Truth (1968) and Beck-ola (1969).

Fast forward to 1984: Beck played solos on three tracks that appeared on Stewart’s solo album Camouflage . One of the tracks, “Infatuation,” became a big hit for Rod, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Beck delivers a wailing, affects-laden solo about two-thirds into the synth-driven, funky rock track. Jeff also makes a cameo in the song’s music video.

“Just Another Night” – Mick Jagger (1985)

Beck once auditioned for The Rolling Stones after Mick Taylor quit the band in 1974. Explaining why The Stones decided not to hire Beck, Keith Richards said in a 2023 Guitar Player interview, “He was such an individualist. It wouldn’t have worked with the Stones at all. We’re all about teamwork.”

Beck did go on to work with Stones frontman Mick Jagger on his 1985 debut solo album, She’s the Boss . Jeff played on six tracks on the album, including acoustic and lead guitar on the record’s first single, “Just Another Night.”

“Just Another Night” became Jagger’s most successful solo single, peaking at No. 12 on the Hot 100 and topping the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

“Blaze of Glory” – Jon Bon Jovi (1990)

Beck lent his guitar talents to seven of the 11 songs featured on Jon Bon Jovi ’s 1990 debut solo album, Blaze of Glory . The album’s title track was a country-blues-flavored power ballad that appeared in the star-studded Western film Young Guns 2 .

Beck contributed acoustic slide-guitar work throughout the track, as well as a blistering electric guitar solo. “Blaze of Glory” topped the Billboard Hot 100 in September of 1990.
