EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: SATAN

satan band tour 2022

Satan’s rise continues. The NWOBHM veterans’ latest album is turning heads across the globe. Festival appearances at Frost and Fireland and Dominion are just around the corner.

But there’s always time for a beer., guitarists russ tippins and steve ramsey joined rushonrock’s simon rushworth and rich holmes in their favourite newcastle watering hole….

It’s an early Monday evening in Newcastle’s Trillians bar.

For once, a band isn’t sound checking.

And that’s unusual for ‘Trills’, given its place as Tyneside’s venerated home of rock and metal – a bastion which has survived changing musical landscapes, city centre gentrification and a global pandemic.

On the wall is an enormous list of acts who’ve graced its hallowed stage. Sick Of It All . Napalm Death . At The Gates . Exodus . It’s a real who’s who of international talent.

Geoff Tate always hits the venue when he hops across the pond. Recent years have seen Trillians host rising US metal outfits Bewitcher , Visigoth and Unto Others .

However, we’re drinking with an entirely home-grown duo tonight.

Emerging in 1979, NWOBHM legends Satan were built on the same streets as Trillians. The same streets that, in the late 70s and early 80s witnessed the rise of Venom , Raven , Tygers of Pan Tang , Avenger , Tysondog et al.

Guitarists Steve Ramsey and Russ Tippins are, therefore, on familiar ground.

And they have a lot to talk about.

With bandmates Brian Ross , Graeme English and Sean Taylor , they’ve just released Earth Infernal , their sixth studio album, and fourth since their 2011 resurrection.

The reception to Earth Infernal has eclipsed even that of their 2013 comeback, Life Sentence , or 2018’s sorcerous Cruel Magic .

And the boys are in demand.

On June 18 they’ll be playing the Frost and Fireland in Derry-Londonderry, alongside the likes of Cirith Ungol , Gama Bomb , Midnight and fellow North Easterners Mythra . It’s a spin off from California’s Frost and Fire festival, which was founded by Satan manager (and Cirith Ungol /Night Demon bassist) Jarvis Leatherby . More on him later.

And on July 31, they’ll be on North East soil for Dominion , the region’s first open air metal festival, which will take place in County Durham. Satan will be sharing a bill with Cradle Of Filth , Blind Guardian , Svalbard , Onslaught , Dawn Ray’d and more.

Indeed, Satan are a regular feature at metal fests across the world, thanks to a renewed interest in the band: interest that’s only accelerated since their ‘one-off’ reunion show at Wacken Open Air .

“We enjoyed it, but that was as far as it went,” Tippins says of that 2004 gig, sipping on a pint of Motörhead Overkill ale. “We’ve done that now, we’ve done a gig! To me, that was it.”

It wasn’t ‘it’.

The seed had been sown.

Satan would rise again.

The spark was back.

“As soon as we started playing again, it was like, ‘wow this is exactly the same’,” says Ramsey. “That’s why we got back together.”

By 2013, they’d released Life Sentence to a world hungry for authentic, ‘traditional’ heavy metal.

Satan’s 2011 performance at Germany’s Keep It True festival was, for Ramsey, a watershed moment. Songs from their debut, 1983’s Court In The Act , were greeted like long lost friends.

“Before the gig we went into the hall,” recalls the guitarist.  “We weren’t headlining, we were third or fourth down on the bill and they asked us to do a signing session.

“We sat down behind a couple of tables and we were there for an hour and a half. It was basically the whole crowd!

“It was so weird because we never got anything like that when we were together in the 80s. We were playing smaller shows. It was nothing like that!”

Did that come as a surprise?

“It’s weird, especially as we weren’t together for all that time and you find out that people are still listening to Court In The Act ,” replies Ramsey. “Some of them are the same age as our own kids!

“It’s the internet. The internet sort of ruins your life and then also builds other careers for you.

“People are selling less records, but on the other hand the kids can listen to what they like. We’re not relying on the press any more to tell us what to listen to.”

The US connection

Satan 2022 is a very different Beelzebub to the bunch of young North East lads trying to make it through the 80s metal minefields.

They’re signed to Metal Blade , who, ironically would have been a perfect fit for the quintet back in 1983.

They also don’t take any crap.

“You learn so much shit when you are younger that when you get your second bite of the cherry you set the boundaries… and you don’t let people take the piss out of you,” Ramsey asserts.

Satan also have some powerful allies.

And a long-held aversion to managers has been put aside, thanks to Jarvis Leatherby, who also looks after NWOTHM stars (and Tippins faves) Visigoth and black rock ‘n’ roll crew Midnight , among others.

Night Demon’s frontman has helped Ramsey, Tippins and co. build on their recent creative endeavours… and spread their metallic hellfire across the USA.

Ramsey says: “When we built it back up it was getting to the point where it was ridiculous. We were touring the States and we didn’t have a manager.

“Night Demon were supporting us at a gig in San Francisco. We turned up at a gig and the drum kit was unplayable. Jarvis sorted something out and said, ‘if you want any help I’m interested in helping the band out’.

“And that’s how it started. We had nothing to lose.

“He’s such a fan of the band. He was never working with the band to make money, he wants to see us succeed.”

Do Satan look back in anger?

In many ways, Satan have never had it so good.

Their post-reformation album run has seen their work appear in myriad Album Of The Year lists, and the festival bookings have come thick and fast.

It contrasts sharply with their first life, back in the 80s.

Ross, who fronted Satan for Court In The Act , departed in 1984 and made a slew of albums with Blitzkrieg . He was replaced by Lou Taylor , who had previously sung with Satan. The band then changed their name to Blind Fury and released Out Of Reach in 1985. “When we got Lou in the band he didn’t want to be in a band called Satan and we just wanted him to be the singer,” Ramsey explains. “We looked up to him. He was older than us. We felt what we were doing wasn’t working. In hindsight you think we should have just stuck to our guns.”

A second opus under the Satan moniker – Suspended Sentence – dropped in 1987, with Michael Jackson behind the mic, before another name change and the emergence of Pariah in 1988.

Two albums ( The Kindred and 1989’s Blaze Of Obscurity ) followed, but by the start of the new decade, the ‘Satan’ line-up had dissipated… and Ramsey and English went on to co-found influential folk metallers Skyclad .

It’s a convoluted tale.

And underlying Satan’s troubled first chapter is the wasted potential of Court In The Act , a debut revered by today’s NWOBHM enthusiasts.

Hell, even James Hetfield wears a Satan patch on his battle jacket.

“When Court In The Act came out someone sent us a photo of one of the main record stores in San Francisco and there were racks of Court In The Act , Ramsey remembers. “We got letters saying that in San Francisco we were are a big band! And we were saying, ‘we can’t be, no one has offered us a show, the record company says we haven’t sold any records’.

Negative press coverage was also a huge blow.

“We were ridiculed in the press,” says Tippins. “Reviewers were more interested in making a joke out of the name. We were poleaxed by the abject failure of Court In The Act . We really took it to heart. It broke the band up really.

“Looking back now we really should have done what we have done over the last ten years.

“We never really did that thing that we have done over the last ten years, which is to get some consistency going with the product, some continuity between the records… so it’s a body of work. That’s really starting to pay off now. If we had done that in the 80s it might have been a very different story.”

In a metal scene of Cattle Decapitations , Nunslaughters and Goatwhores , Satan could be considered a fairly tame name.

But did the band’s moniker – originally drawn out by a schoolboy Ramsey in the pair’s technical drawing class – kill their chances of stardom in those early days?

“We were into Black Sabbath and we thought it would be a cool name for a heavy metal band,” Ramsey recalls with a grin. “My mam said, ‘Are you sure? That’s a bit dodgy’. I said, ‘Mam we are a heavy metal band like Black Sabbath!’.

“None of our families were religious so we didn’t have any of that. They didn’t bat an eyelid until we started getting all the shit.

“When we toured with Running Wild in the mid-80s, Christians started turning up at shows trying to stop kids going in, thinking we were preaching bad things.

“Then you start to realise, is that holding the band back? And you don’t want anything holding you back.”

Maybe the jury is still out…

“It definitely didn’t open doors. But it didn’t hold us back either.”

There’s certainly no holding Satan back now.

Thanks to songs like Burning Portrait and The Blood Ran Deep , Earth Infernal could turn into their most successful album yet.

Sure, the hands of fate could have been kinder to the Newcastle outfit (not to mention those miserly reviewers).

And Ramsey admits that the razor sharp, fast-paced and more progressive-leaning metal of their debut made them “stand out like a sore thumb” from the rest of the NWOBHM pack. “There was nothing like us,” he says. “But instead of getting separated in a positive way because we were different, it was negative.”

“I wouldn’t change anything,” muses Tippins as Trillians starts to fill up. “I have had a pretty good life. I wouldn’t want to change any of that by changing one thing in the past.”

Words by Rich Holmes.

Satan’s Earth Infernal is out now on Metal Blade.

Brian Ross: Vocals Russ Tippins: Guitar Steve Ramsey: Guitar Graeme English: Bass Sean Taylor: Drums

Earth Infernal is a product of the times that birthed it, and could only be the work of Satan . Having churned out cutting edge heavy metal throughout the 80s - and reunited in 2011 - their sixth full-length maintains the high standard they long ago set, and it is perhaps their timeliest release. " For two years the world has been preoccupied with politics and pandemics and while we were all looking the other way our planet has continued to get hotter, " says guitarist Russ Tippins. " Our Earth is now infernally hot. Almost irreversibly so. We are on a one way trip to Hell and dragging our children and their children along with us. Yes, Satan has something to say about global warming. "

Following up 2018's stunning Cruel Magic is no mean feat, a record that Tippins views as a "game changer" for Satan . " It feels like we jumped up a level or two. As if everything we'd worked towards since the reunion had suddenly clicked into place. The band's profile really blew up and the media reviews were sensational. In commercial terms we were high on every metal chart and even broke into the German national charts. We were kind of taken aback at the sudden success. " Still, this did not mean that the guitarist sat around reveling in these triumphs, for as soon as that record was complete he began working on demos for what came next, and continued to write prolifically following its release. With no specific plan in mind for the record they let the songs dictate the direction, which slowly emerged as they worked on them. While the Covid lockdowns were disrupting bands' plans the world over, for Satan they actually worked in their favor. " It really messed up our touring plans but as far as writing goes, it was the best thing that could've happened. Sometimes there is perceived pressure to deliver product every 18 months to keep the engine ticking over, but the enforced hibernation worked out beautifully for us in terms of giving creative ideas more time to blossom - like how it was before our very first record came out. Over three years of development went into that. " Describing the record succinctly as " Brutal, up tempo, loud guitars, " it is classic Satan but sounds fresh and new, the band experimenting a little. " Steve (Ramsey, guitar) and I had been talking for a while about playing some of our dual leads in unison rather than in harmony - which is our normal method. And sure enough, the trusted twin harmonies are still in abundance on this record, but two of the songs have us playing lead in unison ie. the exact same notes as each other, like Rossington & Collins' solo in "Freebird". Hardly any bands do that anymore but it's really added a different vibe to our soundscape, and we can't figure out why we've never done it until now. "

Lyrically, among other themes the band assertively weigh in on the climate crisis, the album lacking a title track but featuring two songs directly linked to the name, "Earth We Bequeath" and "Twelve Infernal Lords". " They share a common theme around the slow cooking of our home planet. What an arrogant self-serving generation we are, who apparently don't care about anything after our own lifetimes. To squander every natural resource and leave nothing for our future descendants. Utter madness. " Then there is another pair of interrelated songs, "Ascendancy" and "Burning Portrait", which depict the story of a high-powered individual, who " could be a politician, or an industrial tycoon, or a star of some sort. "Ascendancy" is about the rise to the top, the brilliance, the optimism and genuine good intention. "Burning Portrait" describes the fall of this person, the gradual decline of optimism turning into cynicism, and how ideals, like paint on a picture, can crumble and decay if not maintained properly. The fall happens in his own mind rather than in the real world. He can no longer visualize himself the way he used to and realizes he has turned into the sum of everything he despised as a young idealist. "

As is always the case the band tracked the record at First Avenue in Newcastle, with Dave Curle engineering and mixing. Though they eschew the tag 'produced by' it was the band that did everything to shape Earth Infernal creatively without interference from anyone else. The sessions however were not without problems. " We started laying down tracks in October 2020 but had to stop when the UK went into its second lockdown which lasted until April 2021. Even then we couldn't get into the studio as it was pre-booked, and then Dave our engineer was taken to hospital after a pulmonary embolism. He nearly died. We decided to wait for him rather than get someone else to take over, Dave is like a part of this band. Then, Graeme (English, bass) had an accident and broke his arm! Then the studio's recording system crashed! It seemed we'd never get this record finished but finally we managed to pick up where we'd left off almost a full year earlier. At that point we were up against the clock, without a doubt. Looking back it was probably a good thing, to have that sense of vitality infusing our performances. " In a time of over-polished, digitally perfected metal records, Satan take a different path, embracing the mistakes made during tracking. " Of course we kept them. The fluffed note, the missed beat on a drum roll, the power chord that doesn't get struck fully. It all adds up to something that sounds engaging. Real. It's something which I feel I'm hearing less and less in modern recording. I'm not saying bands should go out of their way to mess up but if it happens on a take that's really cooking, why meddle with it? It seems that anyone can achieve perfection now but, precisely for that reason, perfection really doesn't mean anything anymore. "

With touring plans in the works, fans will get a chance to hear these songs live in the not-too-distant future, and perhaps more importantly Satan will continue to spread the important message at the heart of the album. " I believe that our current writing and subject matter are only too relevant to what is going on in the world today. Take the lyrics of "From Second Sight", for instance. Wherever you care to look around the world, you'll find conspiracy theories and millions of people who actually believe in them. The denial of science is a very dangerous trend. In itself it's nothing new, but lately there's been a significant increase in the number of followers who've now given up on proven fact and are ready to believe that 2+2 = 5 if it suits their purpose. Trust in authority is at an all-time low. Our world is on the brink of sliding into chaos unless people wake up and start to have faith in the smartest human beings on the planet. Established expertise must win the day or we are finished as a species. "

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA will also appear at When We Were Young in Las Vegas and Furnace Fest in Birmingham in October.

" 'The Devil Wears Prada Is Eternal' ," the band states. "We are thrilled to announce our fall 2024 headline tour with an incredible lineup of bands. This will be the craziest TDWP show you've ever seen, so get your tickets now before they're all gone! See you in the pit."

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA also dropped the brand new single "Ritual" earlier this year and it's a taste of what's to come.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 's latest album, 2022's "Color Decay" , followed 2019's "The Act" . As Revolver stated when selecting the record as one of the "50 Most Anticipated Albums Of 2022," " THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA have proven time and time again that it's possible to never stop sonically experimenting — with screamo, with spoken word, with atmospheric electronica, with sludge — and never lose their own crushing identity. Anticipating their next successful risk is one of the things that makes being a TDWP fan so rewarding."

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA have been consistently delivering since forming in 2005. Fans voted 2009's seminal "With Roots Above And Branches Below" one of the "5 Greatest Metalcore Albums" in a Revolver poll, with the magazine christening it "a true metalcore landmark." The group has notched six consecutive Top 5 debuts on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums chart, including "Dead Throne" (2011), "8:18" (2013), "Space" EP (2015), "Transit Blues" (2016), "The Act" (2019) and "ZII" EP (2021). The latter served as a sequel to one of their most beloved projects — 2010's "Zombie" EP. In the wake of the EP, the group exceeded a quarter of a billion cumulative streams and views. During 2021, the musicians decamped to remote hideaways together in Wisconsin and Desert Hot Springs, California. This time around, keyboardist/programmer Jonathan Gering took the reins as producer, collaborating closely to assemble a rich sonic architecture for what would become "Color Decay" .

Love Nazareth! Please do a tour date in Chicago, Illinois soon! My husband and I would love to buy tickets to see you! Nazareth is one of our favorite bands!

I loved every second of it. Small venues are always the best, because you can get closer and almost feel like you are in the show rather just watching it.

Great band, great energy and even banter. Totally recommend them

Hungary’s Orban will reportedly visit Donald Trump in Florida after NATO summit

Viktor Orban in Washington, D.C., on July 9.

Former President Donald Trump will meet with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Florida on Thursday, multiple outlets reported, less than a week after Orban met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Bloomberg News and The New York Times reported on the expected meeting, citing people familiar with the matter.

The visit is likely to fan concerns that the Hungarian leader is working as an intermediary between Putin and Trump.

Trump and Putin professed a fondness for one another during the US president’s first term - often garnering bipartisan criticism. More recently, the Republican leader has said he believed he could convince Putin to end his war in Ukraine and release Americans detained in Russia if he were elected to a second term.

Orban will travel to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort after the conclusion of the NATO summit in Washington. His visit to Moscow became a central point of discussion at the gathering, where other allies pledged additional air defenses for Ukraine in its continuing campaign against the full-scale Russian invasion that began in 2022.

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, has not asked the Hungarian leader to lay the groundwork for some sort of Ukraine-Russia peace deal, according to one of the people familiar with the Orban visit, who was granted anonymity to discuss it. The person described the visit, which will take place days before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, as more of an informal get-together.

Orban also paid a visit this week to President Xi Jinping in China, following a trip to Azerbaijan earlier this month.

Trump campaign spokespeople didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Spokespeople for the Hungarian government didn’t immediately comment.

Hungary took over the European Union’s rotating presidency July 1. EU officials have criticized Orban’s travels, arguing they could undermine the 27-member bloc’s positions on global issues.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told CBS News’s Face the Nation on Sunday that Orban “made it clear when he came to Moscow that he didn’t go there on behalf of NATO.”

“Different NATO allies interact with Moscow in different ways,” he added.

The Hungarian leader and Trump have cultivated a close relationship, with Orban visiting Mar-a-Lago in March. Trump feted him with a tour of his residence, dinner with former first Lady Melania Trump, an hour-long meeting with senior aides, and musical performance by a band covering Roy Orbison songs.

President Joe Biden seized on that meeting at a subsequent political rally in Philadelphia, saying Orban “doesn’t think democracy works” and was “looking for dictatorship.”

The Biden administration has criticized Orban over his friendly relations with Putin, as well as legislation in Hungary that the State Department warned could “intimidate and punish” critics of Orban’s government.
