- Hotels In Yala National Park
The Best Hotels in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka, for Wildlife Lovers
Sri Lanka’s prime safari destination blends back-to-nature hotels with upscale luxury camping retreats. Leopards, elephants and sloth bears – Yala National Park is the most popular safari spot in Sri Lanka for good reason: its vast scrubland is teeming with wildlife year-round, giving visitors the best chance of spotting the country’s “big three”. Whether you opt to stay in the region’s rustic eco lodges or exclusive resorts, you’re in for an unforgettable adventure. Here’s our pick of the best hotels in Yala National Park, all bookable with Culture Trip.
1. wild coast tented lodge.
Boutique Hotel, Eco-Lodge, Luxury
“Glamping” doesn’t quite cut it when trying to describe Wild Coast Lodge. This is an ultra-luxurious, romantic safari experience, where the “tents” include teak floors, four-poster beds and handmade copper bathtubs. The entire hotel – from the classy bar to the snug library and TV room – has been built to blend into the landscape, a divine intersection of forest and ocean, where elephants, leopards and monkeys roam.
2. Cinnamon Wild Yala
The chalets at Cinnamon Wild Yala offer either beach or jungle panoramas from their wide, private verandas – but you’ll probably be torn between this view and the one from the treetop bar. If you want an extra-special dining experience, book dinner by the lake, watching out for the resident crocodiles (staff will escort you) before ending the evening on an infrared night drive, where you might spot leopards on the prowl.
3. Safari Lodge Yala
Safari Lodge
Sitting between Yala National Park and the holy town of Kataragama, Safari Lodge Yala is close to shops and restaurants, unlike many of the remote lodges around these parts, while still providing easy access to the most popular wildlife spot in Sri Lanka. Peacocks and other critters wander around the cobblestone paths and between the freestanding bungalows (which are great for families and small groups) – don’t forget to pick up a pre-packed breakfast if you’re heading out for an early-morning safari.
5. Uga Chena Huts
Luxury, Boutique Hotel, Spa Hotel
Guests at Uga Chena Huts, another of Yala’s luxury-camping-like retreats, can enjoy morning and evening safaris every day of their stay, at no extra cost. But if that doesn’t convince you to splash out, perhaps the opulent digs will. The 14 huge thatch-roofed cabins sprawl out over 7 acres (2ha) of land, flanked by wildlife-packed Yala National Park and the crashing Indian Ocean. Every room has a private plunge pool, so if it’s seclusion you’re after, this is it.
6. KumbukRiver Resort
KumbukRiver Resort sits on the northern edge of Yala National Park. At just under an hour from the lesser-used Galge park entrance, it’s not the most convenient if safaris are your priority, but there’s plenty to keep you entertained, such as mud baths, fishing expeditions and village visits. The main draw has to be the quirky lodgings: choose between a truck-turned-cabin, a giant treehouse or (perhaps the most unusual of all) a huge elephant-shaped villa.
7. Saraii Village
Cottages, Eco-Lodge, Treehouse
Saraii Village is for you if you like to be up close with nature. The open-sided, multi-level treehouses with king-sized beds and mud chalets with simple outdoor bathrooms put you a mere muslin drape away from the elements. For an extra fee, you can enjoy breakfast at nearby Wirawila Lake, or try your hand at palmyrah weaving with local craftswomen.
8. The Kingdom Eco Lodge and Farm
Lodge, Farm
Wifi will be the last thing on your mind at the Kingdom Eco Lodge and Farm, where wild elephants roam and guests can help maintain 30 acres (12ha) of mango, banana and papaya trees. The two eco lodgings are basic but well kept and have serene lakeside views. Nearby Lunugamvehera National Park – home to water buffalo, wild boar and more – offers a crowd-free alternative to Yala National Park.
9. EKHO Safari Tissa
With Yala National Park to the east, Bundala National Park to the west and a rugged coastline to the south, EKHO Safari Tissa is a fine launchpad for outdoor adventures and animal enthusiasts. Cosy earth-toned rooms overlook the sparkling pool, beyond which lie Tissa Lake and a verdant wildlife sanctuary. Take a wander around Tissa town to find an array of restaurants (try Chef Lady for top-notch seafood) and intricate Buddhist temples.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge Luxury lodge in Yala National Park
UNESCO design award winner Wild Coast Tented is a spectacular luxury tented camp stunningly located where the jungle meets a pristine beach, overlooking the Indian Ocean. The unique design blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Wild Coast’s soaring, curved, organic structures are an eye-widening architectural triumph. The bamboo-clad, open-air restaurant and bar are positioned beside a freeform turquoise infinity pool, complementing the Yala bushland-and-beach setting. Tucked away in the wilderness, dazzling Cocoon tented bedrooms and a Sanctuary Spa dot the landscape like scattered seed pods. Wild Coast is a member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux association of unique hotels and restaurants owned and operated by independent entrepreneurs – most often families – who are passionate about their craft and deeply committed to forging warm, lasting relationships with their guests.
An anchored airship in the wild
A feat of invention and ingenuity, our Cocoon suites bring to mind an anchored airship. 28 Cocoons are scattered in our beachfront jungle wilderness like giant seed pods. Each Cocoon has a wooden patio, some with plunge pools, positioned to soak up views of the closest watering hole. Inside, an air-conditioned mini kingdom awaits, styled with vintage-explorer charm: all copper accents, rich-red leather camp-style furniture, and blissful four-poster, king-sized beds. Sisal and Persian-style rugs add texture and colour; the majestic copper bath with its leopard-paw claw feet is a firm reminder that you’re in the jungle.
Experiencing local cuisine is an integral part of visiting Wild Coast Tented Lodge. We’d like to think of each plate, every dish, the ingredients used as an expression, an indication of its connection to nature, our island home and the progressive creativity of our chefs.
A large freeform infinity pool radiates outwards from the dome-shaped bar for your relaxation.
Cocoons are positioned around clay lined ponds which combined represent the paw print of a leopard.
Our lodge opens up to the rugged, empty beach, overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Our spa offers classic as well as cinnamon and tea-based treatments dedicated to holistic wellness.
The Library features shelves of books, specimens, fossils, shells, dried plant samples.
Where the jungle meets the Indian Ocean Yala
Teeming with incredible biodiversity, the Yala National Park offers exceptional wildlife experiences. Besides being home to the largest population of leopards in Sri Lanka, Yala is also home to elephants, sloth bears, mugger crocodiles and a kaleidoscopic array of birdlife. Our rangers are passionate, educated and highly skilled, with an eye for detail. Going on a safari or nature walk is not only about the facts, as they also offer a deep respect for the wild. Watch them interpret signs of wildlife to deliver a fascinating narrative, making each of our outdoor drives and walks a distinct experience.
Our Jungle Philosophy Curated Experiences
Our experiences are mindfully curated to offer an authentic, intimate exploration into the essence of Sri Lanka. We also offer activities with healthy doses of fun, adventure and pampering, along with a holistic wellness offering for guests to escape their urban life and soothe mind, body, and soul. A selection of engaging activities for families - with a special selection for kids - are on hand as well, to round out the perfect getaway.
We strive to redefine game drives by taking a holistic approach to the wilderness.

Curating Meaningful Journeys
Our values and vision are inspired by our Founders, the Fernando family, who believe that business is a matter of human service. Our portfolio of resorts are located in scenic and environmentally sensitive areas, enabling us to drive our sustainability agenda across Climate Action, Land & Sea and People & Culture.
Wild Coast Tented Lodge sits amidst the wilderness that is contiguous with the Yala National Park. While keystone species such as leopards, elephants and sloth bears visit the lodge, the Palatupana coastline which highlights our island’s coastal dune landscape is visited annually by nesting sea turtles. Curious in nature and mindful of their impact on the environment and wildlife, our expert rangers contribute to the conservation initiatives of our Lodge.

Explore our Island of Treasures
Known as Ceylon until 1972, Sri Lanka means Resplendent Island. Just off the southern tip of India, the island is about the size of Ireland and home to 20 million people. The small island packs in a continent’s worth of attractions with 8 UNESCO world heritage sites, mountainous tea country, spectacular wildlife, epic food, and breathtaking coastlines combine to form a tapestry, filled with intriguing characters that bring the story of today’s Sri Lanka to life. The country has a rich cultural heritage with its strategic location along the ancient silk route. Ancient Greeks called it Taprobane, Persians and Arabs referred to it as Serendib, the origin of the word “serendipity”.

Loved Laya”
We absolutely loved our stay at Laya. The staff was wonderful The food was really good and they were sweet enough to make a salad which wasn't there on the menu Would highly recommend this place if you are going for the Safari at Yala The view is spectacular and the rooms are tastefully done up The highlight was the service .They do know how to take care of their guests!
Great Stay!”
We had a great time at Laya. The food was really the only thing that really let it down, the buffet was decent but other than that it was pretty average. The best was cooked noodles to order and omlettes in the morning! Also for the quality it was a little expensive. I must mention that the hotel also needs a bit of upkeep ie our shower head was broken and also the pool deck definitely needs a varnish. However our room was awesome, the location is prime and it is so close to Yala so doing the safari is easy. The pool is also a highlight!! The staff were very good, however a little too confronting with asking us to give them good reviews. We Did enjoy the bed maker though! All in all a great stay, just a few minor things that will make it excellent!
True safari feel!”
Set on a desrted beach 12 kilometres along a red dirt road, you really felt you were coming to somewhere special, especially when you finally saw the jagged silhouette of the hotel on the horizon perched on the dunes overlooking the beach. It was total escapism and relaxation when we weren't actually on our jeep safari through Yala National Park where we were lucky to see a rare sighting of a leopard up close. The breakfast and buffet dinner in the Dining Room with its great views were both of an excellent standard, as you would not want to waste time going into town for restaurants. We loved the spacious split level room with balcony. A unique treat to stay here amongst nature! Woukd love to return!!!
Excellent stay”
We stayed 2 nights in Laya Safari. The hotel is a bit isolated but it is so nice and reasonably priced that you don't want to leave the hotel grounds. The staff are certainly 5* quality and the food is great, especially the breakfast. The pool could be a bit cleaner but that is a minor issue.
Decided to splurge for our Yala adventure. Great hotel in beautiful location within the national park so only a 10 minute drive to safari entrance. Great staff, amazing food for breakfast buffet and awesome room with comfy beds. Room had a bath with view of the ocean from which we could see dolphins swimming.

Hilton Yala Resort Review: Luxury Safari Hotel in Sri Lanka
I was amongst the first guests to experience a bucket list stay at one of the newest Hilton hotel openings – a luxury safari resort located within Yala National Park in Sri Lanka. Read my full review to find out what it was like.
A safari is something I imagine is on most people’s bucket lists, and I was lucky enough to start the year ticking it off of mine.
Sandwiched between the Indian ocean and the wild landscape of Yala National Park, Hilton Yala Resort is in prime position for those wanting to be in the middle of the action.
If you’re planning a trip to Yala National Park and considering a stay at the Hilton, I’ll cover everything you need to know in this review.
My stay here was gifted, but all opinions are my own. I don’t accept stays in places I wouldn’t choose to stay in myself, and I write honestly about the experience I had.
First impressions
After a very long journey from Dublin to Sri Lanka, our driver dropped us off on the outskirts of Yala, with recent flooding making it too difficult for cars to go any further.
A jeep from the hotel arrived to take us the rest of the way, along a bumpy dirt track that doesn’t look like it would lead to much more than a field.
We passed a sign listing the last animal sightings in the area, and our eyes and ears were peeled for any sign of life amongst the bushes.
It was dark, and I felt a rush of anxiety, unsure whether I’d be excited if an elephant appeared in front of me, or absolutely petrified.
20 minutes later, and no elephants spotted, we arrived at the hotel. Guards open the large, bolted gates, another important reminder that wild animals live here, and we are mere visitors to their home.
Tell me about the hotel
The resort only opened in August last year, and we were one of the first guests to experience it. This marks Hilton’s third opening in Sri Lanka, and its unique location within the national park aims to provide guests with an up close experience of the animals.
There’s 42 rooms, suites and villas at the resort, all with their own pools and hot tubs , as well as an impressive swimming pool, spa, gym and 3 restaurants serving a variety of Sri Lankan and Western food.
If you’re looking for the ultimate safari experience, locations don’t get much better than this. The resort is based within the popular Yala National Park in Sri Lanka, around 4 hours from Bandaranaike International Airport.
And when I say within the park, I mean just that, there’s no gates between the resort and the rest of the national park, and animals are free to roam through the hotel grounds.
Elephants are often spotted strolling past the bedrooms, so regularly in fact, that guests are advised to always call for one of the hotel 24 hour buggy’s if they need to go anywhere.
Each morning we woke up to monkeys swinging between the trees outside our room, and if we peered just a little further into the park, we could spot water buffalo taking a dip.
Getting there
If you’re taking a circular route around the country, I’d recommend visiting Yala in the middle of your trip (from Ella or the South coast depending on which way you go).
Tissamaharama is the closest town to Yala, and you have the choice of public transport or Pick Me (Sri Lanka’s answer to Uber) to get you there.
Bus | Ella – Wellawaya – Tissamaharama
*I can’t find a reliable bus timetable for Ella – Tissamaharama, and search results only show one bus at 00:30. This blog post is written by someone who took the bus, and has more information about the options available.

During our three night stay at the Hilton Yala Resort, we split our time across two rooms – a King Deluxe Room and a Premium Pool Villa.
Every room at the hotel has either a hot tub or swimming pool, so no one draws the short straw.
Both rooms were similar in style, with neutral tones and local artwork that provide consistency between the interior and the surroundings of the hotel.
The bathrooms are huge, with a freestanding bath tub, rain shower and double sink. Both rooms had a separate seating area with a TV, and large, comfy beds.
We found we didn’t get much use out of the hot tub in the Deluxe Room because it was so warm outside, so having the private pool in the villa was a very welcome addition, and one I’d encourage you to go for if you can.
Food and drink
When you’re staying at a destination hotel with nothing else around, there’s an added level of pressure on the food offering, and the Hilton surpassed all of my expectations with its dining options.
We enjoyed breakfast, lunch and dinner at the resort and were blown away by the quality of the ingredients and the flavours in the dishes. Both the local Sri Lankan dishes and Western cuisine were executed brilliantly.
There’s 3 restaurants to choose from at the hotel, overseen by head chef Jerome Tissera.
Dhira offers a contemporary Asian menu, with dishes such as Mutton chopped roti, Jaffna crab curry, and aromatic confit Seabass (so good we asked for the recipe).
Sandali provides a Western offering, serving steaks, burgers, and grilled meats (there’s vegetarian options too), and Vanya the most casual of the three, with a well curated snacks and cocktail menu.
For a truly memorable experience, guests can enjoy the hotel’s unique dining experience – Lanthaaruma. Located on the beach next to the resort, the menu is fully customised to your tastes, and accompanied by a wine pairing. Of course, rangers will be nearby just incase an elephant decides to join you for dinner.
Too often I stay in hotels were breakfast feels like an afterthought, but here, it was my favourite meal of the day.
There’s a varied continental offering (including cheese croissants that I couldn’t get enough of), as well as a cooked menu with a selection of Sri Lankan and Western dishes.
I opted for an omelette most days, which was always cooked perfectly, and was served with a variety of brilliant toppings.
Don’t leave without trying the “Sri Lankan” – a traditional breakfast made up of curries, rice dishes, sambals, roti and string hopper.
At the centre of the resort is the huge swimming pool, which is surrounded by greenery that gives you the feeling of swimming through mangroves. Lying here listening to the birds chirping was one of my favourite parts of our stay.
There’s also a gym and a spa which offers a variety of treatments.
The only thing that isn’t allowed that you might usually expect from a luxury hotel, is room service, but only to keep animals at bay, so I was more than happy to oblige.
Service was mostly excellent, members of staff were very attentive and happy to help. The buggy service operates 24/7 and we were never waiting longer than a few minutes for one to arrive.
There were a few times when I asked for things (like whether it would be possible to do a cooking class, or if we could do another safari), and I had to chase several times for an answer as it was forgotten about.
I don’t think this is anything more than teething problems with it being a new hotel though, and I’m confident the service will only get better as the team settle in.
What I loved the most was the general feel around the resort, there wasn’t a hint of stuffiness despite it being a luxury hotel. I felt at ease and fully able to switch off and relax.
Guest experiences
Of course the main attraction here is the opportunity to head out on a safari in Yala National Park.
The hotel have their own rangers with incredible knowledge of the animals, and guests can choose from a morning, afternoon or full day safari, all of which include delicious refreshments prepared by the hotel.
Unfortunately due to a combination of bad weather and overcrowding, I found our game drive disappointing – you can read my full review of our trip to Yala National Park here.
But the hotel offers an array of experiences beyond the game drive, including bush and dune walks, visits to archaeological sites and temples, a fishing village tour and even dedicated excursions for children.
On our second day at the hotel, we were back in the National Park to visit Sithulpawwa temple, an ancient Buddhist temple believed to have been built in the 2nd century, and it was really enjoyable.
We were in a quieter part of the park where we hardly saw any other jeeps, and we managed to spot an elephant, monkeys and crocodiles on the way.
Would I recommend a stay here?
Overall, the Hilton Yala Resort exceeded my expectations. The considered interiors, exceptional food and ample amenities make it a brilliant choice for a trip to Yala.
There’s something so special about going to sleep at night knowing that elephants, monkeys and leopards are just around the corner, so if you’re planning a trip to Yala, this hotel is the perfect base.

WILD TRAILS YALA
The concept of Wild Trails wasn’t born out of a business plan. Rather, it was a passion for camping deep in the jungles and experiencing nature in its purest and most rustic form that prompted the architects of the idea to share that experience. Having understood that the discerning traveler of today would want to savour the same experience, but with the modern comforts, Wild Trails, which began as an experimental idea over a decade ago, has today become a popular ‘glamping’ destination.
Wild Trails is the kind of experience that one would otherwise experience camping inside the park. Well, the secure, large 36 x 15 feet tents and the comfortable bedding and amenities can easily make you forget that you are in the wilderness. But, if the cries of the wild at night do remind where you are, you will have comfort in the fact that you’ve got the company of seasoned staff who know the territory like the back of their palms.
OUR CAMPING TENTS
The size of the tent is 15 feet wide and 36 feet in length. Bed room is 15 feet X 22 feet in length/bathroom 15 feet width X 7 feet in length/Deck 15 feet width X 7 feet in length. There are two bunker beds on the deck at the entrance two snooze off during the afternoon with the cool breeze blowing across. The bedroom has writing table with a camp chair a separate bag stand and a sofa with plugs for charging the cell phone or laptop and a fan. The tents are isolated and separated by forest cover giving you the privacy and the thrill of real camping with all the facilities. The toilet consists of a separate shower cubicle, a wash basin and a WC which is attached to the tent and just separated by curtains on either side of the bed. Especially if you realize that Yala National Park is considered the most popular wildlife park on Sri Lanka’s teardrop-shaped island.

Yala National Park is situated in the southeast region of Sri Lanka’s teardrop-shaped island and stretches over the two provinces, Hambantota and Monaragala.
The Yala National Park is quite remote, and therefore it’s almost inevitable to visit a town named Tissamaharama.
Tissamaharama itself isn’t the most interesting town and it’s also quite difficult to get to. Nevertheless, it functions perfectly as the only official gateway to the wildlife park.
The official Yala visitor centre is around 20km east of the town, which is easily reached by joining a Yala National Park tour from Tissamaharama.

WHERE TO STAY IN YALA NATIONAL PARK
You’ll find an abundance of excellent accommodations (both in and outside the park) that suit almost every budget and travel style.
Tissamaharama has no shortage of budget-friendly options, comfortable lodges and luxury hotels, while there’s also a great number of luxurious wildlife campings and chalets inside the Yala National Park itself.
Going on a safari in Yala National Park is extremely popular and therefore it’s wise to book your accommodation a couple of weeks in advance, especially if you’re planning to visit during the high season.
Some of the accommodations I recommend include:
Hotel River Front
A charming riverfront hotel with spacious air-conditioned rooms, comfortable beds, and a great outdoor swimming pool. The hotel has a good in-house restaurant that serves excellent local, Chinese and Continental food.
Booking.com | Hotels.com
Thaulle Resort
Located directly at the Yoda Lake, Thaulle Resort is a great hotel with traditional Sri Lankan-style rooms, spectacular lakeside views, a large outdoor pool and a courteous and helpful staff. This hotel literally provides all the essentials to unwind after an adventurous safari tour in Yala National Park.
Cinnamon Wild Yala
If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, look no further. Cinnamon Wild offers astonishing eco-friendly chalets in the midst of the lively jungle of the beloved Yala National Park. Undisputedly one of the best picks when it comes to uniqueness, comfort and world-class service.
Jetwing Yala
A luxurious hotel with a marvellous outdoor pool, spacious air-conditioned rooms, and a charming ambience. Given the location of the hotel, you’ll be encircled by delicate nature and fascinating wildlife. The friendly staff also provide great service and hospitality.
WHAT ANIMALS WILL YOU SEE ON A YALA NATIONAL PARK SAFARI?
Yala National Park is a vast dynamic reserve, consisting of dense jungle, endless grasslands and several lakes and lagoons.
This distinct landscape ensures the perfect habitat for a great variety and density of wildlife, making Yala one of the best national parks in Sri Lanka .
But it isn’t just the variety of animals that makes Yala National Park so popular. No, it’s mostly the fact that it’s acknowledged as one of the best spots in the world to see wild leopards.
THE ANIMALS OF YALA NATIONAL PARK
Although taking a safari tour doesn’t guarantee that you’ll see every animal that lives in the Yala National Park, it’s safe to expect to get up close and personal with water buffalos, wild boars, spotted deers, monkeys and peacocks.
Beyond the aforementioned wildlife, there is the potential sighting of leopards, elephants, Black Sloth bears, Fishing cats, Red Slender loris and crocodiles.
In total, the Yala National Park is home to 44 species of mammals, 215 species of birds and 46 species of reptiles, which makes it impossible not to spot any animals during your safari.
LEOPARD SIGHTINGS IN YALA NATIONAL PARK
According to extensive research, Yala National Park is said to have the biggest concentration of leopards in the world.
And given the fact that there live a total of approximately 55 leopards in the park, you might have the good fortune to encounter one during your jeep safari in Yala.
However, each safari is completely unique and it’s impossible to guarantee what animals you’re going to see (especially the rare species). Therefore I highly recommend lowering your expectations, as it’s less common to encounter leopards.
JOIN A YALA NATIONAL PARK TOUR
Tissamaharama is home to an abundance of safari tour operators, that are all extremely willing to take you on your once in a lifetime Yala National Park safari experience.
A Yala safari jeep has the capacity for up to 6 people and the safari tour operator will usually arrange a pick-up and drop-off at your accommodation.
Yala National Park can be visited as part of a morning, afternoon or full-day jeep safari.

MORNING SAFARI IN YALA NATIONAL PARK
It is often said that a morning safari in Yala National Park provides the best circumstances when it comes to the potential sightings of elusive wildlife.
This is mainly due to the fact that the animals aren’t yet disturbed by the countless amount of jeeps that drive along the park’s dusty roads throughout the day.
Even though waking up at 04.30 is pretty intense, it’s safe to say that it’s completely worth the struggle.
By joining a morning safari, you’ll get picked up at your accommodations around 05.00 with the mission to arrive at the entrance of the park before it opens at 06.00.
In my opinion, the best part of a morning safari is the exciting journey to the park whilst it’s still dark, knowing you’re about to witness exquisite wildlife while it’s still relatively quiet in the park.
BOOK | This extremely popular guided safari during the golden hour
Duration | 05:00 – 10:00 with approximately 3 hours in the park.
AFTERNOON SAFARI IN YALA NATIONAL PARK
A great alternative for those that experience difficulties when waking up early is taking the slightly more popular afternoon safari in Yala National Park.
According to most Yala safari rangers, there isn’t a significant difference between the morning and afternoon safari when it comes to the sightings of wildlife.
I’ve seen a great variety of animals during my afternoon safari in Yala National Park, and found it a tranquil yet adventurous experience – plus I witnessed a magnificent sunset while leaving the park.
Duration | 13:00 – 18:00 with approximately 3 hours in the park.
FULL-DAY SAFARI IN YALA NATIONAL PARK
Although it sounds pretty attractive, I personally wouldn’t recommend going on a full-day safari in Yala National park.
Being in the park for 12 hours straight is extremely exhausting – plus you should keep in mind that you’re in the park during the hottest part of the day. Believe me, this can be quite intense in Sri Lanka.
It is also not guaranteed that you’ll see more animals during a full-day safari than during a morning or afternoon safari in Yala National Park.
BOOK | This exceptional full-day safari with lunch
Duration | 05:00 – 19:00 with approximately 12 hours in the park.
YALA NATIONAL PARK SAFARI COST
The price of a jeep safari is made up of the official Yala National Park entrance fee – plus the price that you’ll arrange with your safari tour operator.
The price of a safari tour operator varies and depends on the following elements: the duration of the tour, the tour operator and the number of people that join the safari tour.
The jeep safari tour prices are often per jeep, which can hold up to six persons, and are easy to organize at nearly every accommodation in Tissamaharama.
I made an insightful summary, so you’ll have a clear indication of the costs of a jeep safari in Yala National Park.
Yala National Park entrance fee | 7.000 LKR, ($21.50) per person.
Half-day jeep safari | 11.000 – 15.000 LKR, ($33.00 – 45.00) per jeep
Full-day jeep safari | 24.000 – 30.000 LKR, ($72.00 – 90.00) per jeep
YALA NATIONAL PARK OPENING HOURS
The Yala National Park is open daily from 06:00 till 18:00 and is pretty strict regarding the regulations of the opening hours.
If you’re joining a morning safari, the goal is to arrive at the gate well before it opens. Being one of the first in line provides the benefit to enter the park as early as possible.
It’s also essential that all jeeps are out of the park before it closes at 18:00. This is monitored by the official wildlife officers that note and check the license plates of the jeeps that enter and leave the park.
BEST TIME TO VISIT YALA NATIONAL PARK
Although you can visit the park year-round, the absolute best time to visit Yala National Park is during the dry season. This season runs from February to June, with February and March as the undisputed peak months to spot leopards.
It is said that it’s easier to spot wildlife during this period, mainly because of the deficient natural water resources that are available in the park. For that reason, animals get active to go out of their hideouts and drink from the accessible water ponds.
I personally visited Yala National Park during the offseason in September and had a great safari experience with an impressive number of animal sightings.
Do keep in mind that there is a great possibility you’ll find the park closed for maintenance in September.
HOW TO GET TO YALA NATIONAL PARK
The Yala National Park is slightly off the beaten path compared to other popular sights in Sri Lanka. This doesn’t mean you’ll have to be discouraged, it’s more than worth the extra effort.
The only gateway to the Yala National Park is a town named Tissamaharama, which is best reached by local bus or car.
The journey by bus can be quite long, intense and exhausting, but trust me, it’s one of the best ways to experience daily local life.
Do keep in mind that the local bus stops frequently and that you’ll need to change busses on several occasions to reach Tissamaharama.
The Yala National Park is usually visited after Mirissa, Ella or Arugam Bay.
FROM MIRISSA TO TISSAMAHARAMA
Bus journey | Mirissa – Matara – Tissamaharama Cost | 250 – 330 LKR, ($1.30 – 1.80) per person Travel time | Around 3.5 hours
FROM ELLA TO TISSAMAHARAMA
Bus journey | Ella – Tissamaharama Cost | 220 – 250 LKR, ($1.20 – 1.35) per person Travel time | Around 2.5 hours
FROM ARUGAM BAY TO TISSAMAHARAMA
Bus journey | Pottuvil – Monaragala – Wellawaya – Tissamaharama Cost | 350 – 380 LKR, ($1.90 – 2.10) per person Travel time | Around 6.5 hours
INSIGHTFUL TRAVEL TIPS FOR A VISIT TO YALA NATIONAL PARK
Photography gear | If you’re into serious photography you might want to bring your camera and zoom lens. See what’s in my camera bag here .
Sunscreen | Even though the jeep is partly covered, the sun can be extremely harsh during a safari in Yala. Better safe than sorry.
Bug repellent | It’s always good to have a good bug repellent within hand reach.
Sweater | Bring a warm sweater. This will be your best friend during a morning safari.
Drinking water | Bring drinking water to stay hydrated throughout the day.
No toilets in the park | Do keep in mind that there are no toilets available inside the park.
Visit without expectations | Last but not least, lower your expectations before going on a safari. Every safari is unique and there is no guarantee that you’ll see all the animals you hope to see.

What is Yala National Park?
Yala National park is the oldest and the second largest national park in the Country. It is a secondary growth of the forest where used to be an ancient kingdom over 2000 years ago.
Yala is home for an array of wildlife while the different blocks (sectors) of the park fall under multiple climate zones, changing landscape, vegetation and animal densities different between each block.
Yala is renowned for its highest density of leopards in the world making it the world’s best destination to see a leopard in the wild, even ousting Africa.
Collaborative research carried out by frequent visitors of Yala has identified and profiled over 100 individual leopards in Block 1 it self over 5 years time.
As in climate zones While block 2 of Yala falls under the arid zone, block 1 falls under semi arid and block 3-4-5 extends into intermediate and dryzone. Therefore vegetation in Yala extends from shrub jungles of thorny bushes to dual layered riparian gallery forest with a tree canopy.
